It’s raining trailers, first look, posters last couple of days and it seems all movies getting crammed in the same period. Lots of choices for viewers in the second half of the year. After 2006 another year where all the top actors have a comparable / evenly matched release.
Not for anything else but would be easier to rank the stars which all of us love to do here…
As good as she looks, Deepika’s ghaatan Engish accent just does not gel with her character, clothes or co-stars’ accents. They shud add a storyline of Deepika being brought up in the Ghats before landing in Goa.
and here I would agree with Ami, one way or the other Deepika’s English always invites some sort of comment. Since Priyanka’s or Katrina’s (along with many others) never does the fact that hers is a very ‘Indian’ or even ‘Southern Indian’ accent in certain ways clearly raises flags of some sort!
I only have one issue with it….it sounds painful to my ears, and that doesn’t mean I have a problem with all southern indian accents. Deepika’s is just something else…even her Hindi accent is terrible. Might not be the right thing to say, but it’s the truth.
It is not the accent that is “painful”. If you were to remove the image/video and just listen to her speaking, then it is a 9 year old speaking. It is extremely childish or borderline child-borderline adult and that is painful. She needs to go to a speech therapist to improve the pitch. Her accent per se is OK. If one wants COMPLETE ghatan accent, then just listen to ALIA BHATT. She is pucca machali-wali-ghatan speaking English which is very unlike convent educated, bombaiya Kareena Kapoor. Priyanka is accent-less. I won’t call her accent American at all. Madhuri Dixit is also marathi-girl-speaking-english-typical bombay girl accent. If one wants to learn HOW to speak, one should watch Rekha. She is someone worked hard, removed tamil-accent and in fact speak quite deliberately like Amitji. 🙂
NYKavi- Considering that Hindi cinema’s reigning queen is a British woman whose Hindi is atrocious (and whose ardent admirer you happen to be) I find your objection to an Indian girl speaking with an Indian accent in an Indian movie particularly amusing!
Actually, she happens to be playing a Hep Goan Christian gal, but ends up sounding like a Ghatkopari behenji-turned-mod. Btw, Dimple Kapadia seems to be totally at ease with her English. So does Naseer and Pankaj. Deepika has a terrible accent, none of her own contemporaries sounds this bad when they converse in English (or even Hindi as has been pointed out).
Also, I do appreciate her acting, her beauty, very few can hold a candle to her screen presence. Maybe she wudve really excelled in silent movies.
Katrina is criticised for being a bimbo.
aamir khan is criticised for his height and ears and also acting.
Vidya is criticised for her lack of fashion sense.
Kareena is simply not liked by many.
Why deepika should get away just because she is from the south?
But why does her accent sound ‘bad’? Because it’s not anglicized? That’s your opinion, not an objective fact about a weakness she needs to work on and improve. Amd who said a Goan girl needs to have a polished accent? She does not play a ‘hep’ character she plays a dysfunctional oddball. Just because she wears dresses, does not mean she needs to sound sophisticated. She is portrayed helping an old, small-town Goan man find his first love while hooking up with a mechanic- this is hardly a surrounding that demands the Queen’s English!
And why is it that I have never seen these vehement protestations from you over Katrina’s (far worse) Hindi?
Kavi, you have to defie “hip”. In India, a girl may look very-very hip…hair cut, stylish clothes…and maynot speak ANY english at all. Goan english speaking girls speak English like that only 🙂

Have you heard Alia Bhatt speak? It is pucca koli-fishing community accent even when she is speaking English. That is how typical bombay girl will speak English BTW.
Long for the good old days, when a person was respected regardless of their accent or origins, but this is the sign of our times. It is not our fault, we are victims of Modi politics/mindset, and like Modi, we will double down instead of show remorse/regret about our racism.
I’m the biggest Modi critic but what does this have to do with Modi?! Attitudes on race or color or anti-Southern prejudice or whatever is as old as the hills in India!
These prejudices are always there and it surfaces when someone makes it big. These prejudices did not allow heroes from south to make it big while heroines are accepted. The same thing is happening in telugu industry. While the heroes are from that region, the heroines are from the north who can barely speak telugu.
I’d disagree.. again there are lots of political attitudes that I’ve found deeply problematic in ‘new India’ and that I’ve tried to question in the movies and elsewhere. But what you’re referring to are long-held cultural prejudices. If anything the BJP much like right-wing (in the mainstream sense) parties elsewhere around the globe now tries to co-opt a certain political correctness normally associated with liberalism. The reality in each of these cases might be very different but they minimally try to speak that language.
As for ‘digging in’ that is a symptom of the age in most matters. You see this on every subject where people become militant about their opinions, however ignorant they might be otherwise. But even here I can’t say that there is more assertiveness in terms of the things you’re referring to. In fact here too people might be much more regressive than they pretend to be. Which is to say they speak the right language.
On Modi finally I think one must separate what about him is biographically or ideologically problematic from that which is so more because he is symptomatic of a larger trend. Much as in cinema one might not like individual stars or genres of cinema but these too reflect the age.
I see Modi much like the tea party red necks. Bad is good and heck, I will do it more just to “piss you off”.
The larger trend that I see is that all over the world ( no region is immune), we see the same. The baser instinct is taking over. The attitude is “my beliefs trumps civil courtesy”.
I think the mindset is to undo the progress of the last few decades. Those at the cusp of power are motivated to “put back people in their place”.
On a serious note, I have been trying to stay quiet on this but no more. All those who know the British meaning of ‘fanny’ realise the sheer recklessness of this ‘different’ title…
Folks –it’s somewhat amusing to see deepika stooping to this level. From effectively ‘stripping’ in a promo with a rank newcomer to chirping the most obscene title (fully knowing the actual meaning) deepika continues to amaze….
Even in happy new year, note now deepika doesn’t lose a chance to wear the lowest cut tops even when there’s no need/reason for it.
C’mon she’s not a despo newcomer anymore

Singham 2 trailer should be out in couple days too.
HNY trailer is coming out with Singham 2.
We’ll get a good combination of big budget to midium to small budget films in 2nd half.

I only have one issue with it….it sounds painful to my ears, and that doesn’t mean I have a problem with all southern indian accents. Deepika’s is just something else…even her Hindi accent is terrible. Might not be the right thing to say, but it’s the truth.

BPO employees pickup accent and sound as american or as british within a few months training. Within 2 months.
Why cant deepika take some trouble and polish her english as well as hindi as well as kannada?
As for silent movie, Who listens to deepika when she is on the screen? They just ogle at her and her moves and dance moves.
