  4. Hmm Release date is October 2nd…just 3 weeks before HNY. Have we ever seen in recent times to big movies being super successful in the same month? With the hIgh price of tickets, I’m not sure what will happen. t’s not a Singham/ZNMD or BB/Cocktail like situation where the movies have different target audiences, both BB and HNY will look to have big numbers in both SS and Multiplexes.

On the contrary its one of the best release dates one can ask for baring the 4 major dates of June first week / eid / diwali / Christmas.

Oct 2nd is a Thursday, Dussehra is on Friday both national holidays and then u have the weekend kicking in and finally the icing on the cake with Monday again a holiday due to Eid al Adha.

Last year Besharam with no proper heroine support did 20 cr on Oct 2, so this will be north of 25-30 cr on day one even in worst case scenario and if the hype is built properly, this movie may turn out to be the fastest grossing movie.

Hope this not just a regular chase movie and has some bollywood tadka thrown in good measure. Though HR is very popular with kids which means family audience , he may alienate this section if he overdoes a Emraan Hashmi.
Alternately due to leggy Kat the college crowd may lap this up in abundance …..

Should be a better film than that if they’ve seriously reworked the Hollywood original which was quite insipid. Siddharth Anand isn’t the worst director in the world to deliver a serviceable product. The problem with this film though is that it will all be about the star bodies and the water and of course the action and little else. Which is enough to get the big initial and poor follow-through. This is defined as a success these days. Unless of course the director adds some more ‘substance’ here and how often have we seen a Bollywood film being better than the Hollywood original?!

Again my point here would be that even for this kind of fare Hrithik can do far better. But he has the Hollywood bug and will probably do any number of substandard films as long as he can establish that tenuous Hollywood connection. This was true for Kites in a different sense and it’s true here. Surprisingly he hasn’t learnt anything from D2. You don’t need to do all this stuff. Of course the last Krrish wasn’t all that either in box office terms. rather than get the lesson that it was just a poor effort he’ll probably take the message that he needs to go more for this sort of thing. Actually even with Krrish the excessive Hollywoodization let him down. For once it wasn’t the usual Rakesh Roshan deal and much more a desperate attempt to get in everything from mutants to whatever!

The stars too have their own demons. It’s a mistake to think they only make rational decisions. Even the most cynical ones nonetheless wrestle with their demons.

Hritik is becoming older. he’s almost 40. A younger actor/star could do this stuff well .. not that he shouldnt (a decade older stars are making money out of masala actioners) but trouble is he disappears for longer times than he should. at least a film a year should serve him well. a massy film followed by performance-oriented roles etc

Kick can go either way (depending upon the director), but after Dabang 2 and Jai Ho, I think Salman has lost some sheen. Still a force, still a super star no doubt, but now his movie needs to be good to post huge numbers. Most likely even if Kick is not good, it will make 100, but it needs to be special to get into the HNY, BB, PK bracket.

Mirror has it, masterprints of around 60 films were reduced to ashes. These included Jeevan Naiya (Ashok Kumar’s debut film), Achhut Kanya (Ashok Kumar’s first hit), Neel Kamal (Raj Kapoor’s first big break), Jwar Bhata (Dilip Kumar’s debut film), Ziddi (which launched Dev Anand’s career as a leading man), Andolan (Kishore Kumar’s first film as a hero), Bandhan and Jhoola (two of Ashok Kumar’s biggest hits).

Next few years will be test for HR as a person and how stiff or chilled out he is in life. I am plain guessing here – the point of major rift in his marriage was his robotic and mechanized nature. Aamir is similar but occasionally does take a chill pill to remain relevant and not get too monotonous. He balanced his personal life a bit by marrying normal /real people.

        • Abhishek got the comedy awards for BB, not best actor as some did for Krrish and Dhoom. It’s actually a sign of total bankruptcy even in this sense that such roles can get awards (in the US Downey Jr despite being a good actor otherwise would never be considered for Iron-Man!) and then ‘fans’ can defend this stuff! And even if fans of other stars do similar things it doesn’t mean anything. First off I wasn’t talking about those BB awards, I wasn’t saying much about the role or film anyway but leaving this aside even if I think Hrithik or SRK fans or whoever act a certain way that doesn’t force me to defend stars I like doing similar things. Dishonesty or bankruptcy are not more defensible just because others (assuming one is right about this) indulge in it too!

But then that would have been a different film.

            Like

          • I would be a little horrified if that happened! The point you’re missing here is that no star can make super-successes out of certain kinds of subjects. And when I say subjects I don’t mean ‘seemingly’ interesting ones that are ultimately completely tamed to suit audience interests. This was a dark film with really no positive glow to it. More importantly it was also a film critical of ‘new India’ and for many years my thesis has been that no such film every succeeds in a big way. I don’t see one example to the contrary though there are many films that pretend to be dark and serious. The same applies to MP by the way. This applies to D6 or Raavan. It applies to some other stuff too. Now in each case one might prefer one film or the other but it’s a mistake to think these are ‘script’ problems. Because in other genres and even in somewhat different genres the same script issues are never a big deal. It’s not as if Barfi or BMB are perfect scripts! Guru is not a ‘better’ script than Yuva. One works the other doesn’t. Even if one can find problems in some of these films those are not the reasons why they don’t succeed. A commercial cinema, even a somewhat offbeat cinema still has to be on the right side of its audience in various ways. If you take most Hollywood films that are ‘different’ and win awards or at least acclaim the vast majority of them betray a certain ideological orientation. So its different things in different societies. But yes Hollywood at least has a proper critical culture. In Indian the critics just follow this very reactionary multiplex audience. Let me put it this way — Talaash is a much more radical film than GoW looking at all the contexts. So is MP. A star as significant as Aamir can get you the best initial but he can’t make the audience love those films. RDB is way more problematic as a script than either Talaash or MP but because it pushed the right ideological buttons there was no problem. And again this is a point I’ve made consistently for years.

  16. My response to some of the comments in the thread:

    1. Hrithik is never going to be superstar like the three Khans. He is successful only in niche films, no matter how much those niche films earn. He has not been successful playing a ‘normal’ character, so his never going to occupy a place in people’s hearts the way the Khans have done. Of course he is a big star, and will have many successful films. But the next Khan-like superstar will be someone like Ranbir, Ranveer, Arjun, Varun….or someone else. But not Hrithik.

    2. Hrithik absolutely did not deserve the Best Actor awrd from Filmfare. But Manoj Kumar has won it for Pehchan too. Yes he did justice to his character. So did Jackie Chan in Police Story. But you don’t give a Best Actor trophy to him for that.

    3. In contrast, Aamir’s role in Dhoom 3 required genuine acting talent. He was playing Sahir and Samar, which were CHARACTERS. There were emotions, there was drama. And he portrayed them well. Aamir was the mainstay of the film, there in almost every frame. The film won’t have worked if his acting didn’t deliver.

    4. Aamir showed his usual script sense in choosing Dhoom 3. The stunts were laughable. Aamir doesn’t have the hip sex appeal of Hrithik. The comedy was pazssable. So what made the film work? It WAS the script that touched the people’s hearts. That , and Aamir’s performance. And Katrina’s unfailing charm.

    5. Aamir failed to some extent with the script of Talaash, but not by much. His script sense was still intact in choosing the material, but it needed some more reworking to get to a perfect finish. It was a great concept, and got it mostly right. But failed on two or three aspects. One: The Kareena ghist element. The suspense could have been something else. And if she was to be the ghost, her interactions with Aamir should have been written differently, allowing two way interpretations on looking back. Two: Rani’s ramblings and obsession with planchette don’t sue well with the main narrative. Three: Most importantly, Aamir does nlot emerge as a protagonist, because he does not play an active role in the fin al denouement. It si so passive, therefore unexciting. In films like RDB, 3 Idiots, TZP, he let his costars own a lot of screen time and even key dramatic moments. But in all these films, it is his character that was the prime mover of the narrative, driving the central drama. But it was a honourable try. And getting to something between 90-100 cr was awesome for a film like this. And no, it was NOT a mainstream film. It had stars, but that’s about it. All other elements were of a niche, noir film. Yes, Aamir , and only Aamir could have taken it to 100cr plus, like he took Peepli Live to 30 cr plus, and 3 Idiots another non-mainstream subject to 200cr plus.

      I agree.

If Aamir had been rejected, then D3 would have not made the kind of money that it did. The simple fact is for a movie to be really successful, it’s lead HAS TO succeed (Period). On Aamir, I also agree with your take on Talaash. The script should have allowed a dual interpretation (on looking back) and the absense of this flexibility cost Talaash some brownie points.

Additional, I also agree on Hrithik, his big movies are typically those movies in which he does not play a “normal” guy. This places a serious limit on the amount he is embraced by the general public. The next super star will be one who is successful generally playing the “normal” guy. In fact by the extension of this same logic, I believe “one” of the fatal flaws of RA-1 was that the lead not even a flesh and bone character, leave along a normal character. At least Krish was flesh and bones, RA-1 was 0s and 1s, a cyber fantasy. To me, (and here is where on this blog it will get controversial), it is a shock that it still made more than 200 Cr worldwide. I doubt there is another star in Bollywood who can deliver that kind of money with something like RA-1.

      • The problem with the whole discourse on D3 is that in most cases people have cynical comments on it. First off it’s simply not a reasonable opinion to say it was a terrible film or something of the sort. Given the state of Bollywood and the kinds of films on display all the time and which people are quite happy to watch and endorse it is absurd to then diss D3 so completely. Secondly if one claims one is more disappointed because one expects more from Aamir well that too should be a sincere opinion. if you’re otherwise supporting the average SRK film or the average Akshay film or the average Salman film or whatever and then pretend to be all disappointed about D3 allow me to laugh a bit at this! Even for those who might have a sincere view on this and who might have liked many other Aamir films I would still say that this is by no means close to being the worst film around. I am willing to concede that many found Aamir unconvincing on this terrain and that’s fine but that doesn’t make this a terrible film. And the idea that D2 is some golden standard to live up to is itself laughable. Again I accept that Hrithik is better suited for this terrain but that doesn’t make it a better script. Actually I still think D3 was the most ambitious attempt of the franchise though the masala/stunt-thriller mix was somewhat uneasily handled in the film. But leaving this aside the best of the lot is still the first one if one goes purely by what was attempted and what was achieved. so actually I could make a better case for the first or third part than the second one which doesn’t mean that the second wasn’t watchable. Ultimately even at its best this franchise has hardly ever been rocket science or some great summit of filmmaking even for its genre. So to use any past attempt as a high standard to live upto is itself strange. Finally these debates can be had with people who are sincere about it not those who were either indifferent to Aamir anyway or disliked him (for whatever reason) and now pretend to have their hearts broken by D3! Yeah right!

“I am excited to play the role of a superhero, but when we talk of superheroes, we just have one image — Spider-Man or Superman. But he (Ayan) isn’t writing a film along those lines. Actually I enjoyed Aamirs performances in dhoom3 & talaash a lot…(more than some HR ones)
But ‘stardom’ & ‘pure box office frenzy'(independent of the merit of the movie) is different…
A PURE star doesn’t need a three idiots or Lagaan to work!
Aamir is literally a ‘dwarf’ in front of the other two khans & HR…
Any of Aamirs big hits could have any of these three and still strike big,.,
Can u imagine aamir making any of Salman films work, SRKs yrf trash work, forget about krish (lol) ?

    As for the latest pics—
I’m a bit confused at Sid anands (lack of) imagination..

In the top one, hritik is analysing katrinas left cheek
In the pic below that, he is analysing katrinas right cheek
I wonder what will be analysed in the next pic 🙂

Ps: for the female casting of bang bang–I suspect I need an ‘NRI’ for katrina, no?
And btw where is ‘Margaret Ann’ gone ? 🙂

    • yeah I guess he can’t make hrithik’s trash work.. much as hrithik probably cannot make Salman’s or Akshay’s trash work.. let me me be even more universal here.. Aamir can’t make anyone’s trash work! The rest though cannot make meaningful stuff work most of the time. Because the audience of course just loves them in trash! Now just because you love trash and like heroes that do trash doesn’t mean that no other kind exists!

    • Thank God Aamir doesn’t do any of the masala trash some other stars do.Aamir fans like self prefer Aamir the actor- filmmaker star — in that order. Give me the Aamir of ghulam, jjws, ahat, sarfarosh, 1947Earth, Lagaan, rdb, even fanaa, 3 idiots, Talaash, TZP…

I don’t care about the money these films did or did not make. It is the films that matter in toto. I love the ensemble cast of these films as much as the main lead Aamir. I love the Mirchi Seth character in Sarfarosh as much as the ACP . At the end of the day a film should be a totally satisfying experience, be it a small or big film. Watched The Lunchbox on an international flight recently, second time. Loved all the characters, buy especially Nawaazuddin …and remembered his limping through Talaash, charming us all. These are the actors and films tbat matter, will be remembered.

And Lagaan was passed around the industry, rejected by people like SRK. Came back to Aamir — who took his courage in his hands and produced this wierd film idea. Aamir deserves his success simply for facilitating ashutosh’s exotic and apparently unworkable tale, making it work. He does not need to do a Dabang or a Wanted or some such phillum.

    (Haven’t seen varun yet)
They are good and will do well, but there’s a crucial difference …
From Ranbir downwards, none of them ever gave the ‘biggest hit of the year’ (forget an ATBB) & importantly don’t look like doing so for a few years (with the khans & HR around!)
Ranbirs & rangers biggest Yjhd & Kaam leela weren’t anywhere near the biggest of their release time years ….
& had a MAJOR contribution from DPads charms (& generosity)

Atleast your big hits should trump everyone to be callled a ‘biggie’!

HR did this from his first film onwards, not once but repeatedly …
(& will continue to do so for a few more years …god bless!)

    • YJHD was in ETT range.. CE was ahead by 20-30 crores depending on who you believe but that’s hardly a huge difference.. of the three YJHD was easily the most creditable performance because it was a multiplex-only deal. As usual you simply don’t know what you’re talking about.

“‘Bang Bang’ is a true-blue entertainer and we are going to have the widest possible release for the film. We are releasing the film in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu,” Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, said in a statement.
“The buzz on the film is tremendous and we are going out to market and distribute the film day and date worldwide,” he added.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, “Bang Bang” features Katrina Kaif with Hrithik.

Was he aware of the backlash? “I was and I can understand it. The film was very regressive. In fact, while watching it, I asked myself what I was doing in it. I knew I had let my fans down and underestimated their intelligence,” shuddered the “shaken up” actor.

He solemnly promised he would never do such a film again. “I’ve been introspecting a lot and will never repeat a mistake that was Humshakals,” he asserted.

“Looking back, I can see today that I didn’t enjoy a single minute spent on the Humshakals set. I only enjoyed Sajid and Riteish’s (Deshmukh) company but that was when we weren’t shooting. I won’t blame anybody but myself for this,” he vowed.

  26. I will put it down in writing again, Hrithik will never be a star in the Khans mould. Shahrukh, Salman and Aamir have touched the hearts of the people. They have established a genuine connection with the audience playing different characters in films that have special places in their lives, in their hearts. Hrithik has been a distant, alien figure in almost all his films. Jodha Akbar perhaps is the only exception, but even there he is a historical figure, an emperor. In films like Agneepath, ZNMD or Guzaarish , he is supposedly playing a normal, human character, he still remains a zombie, all physical presence, with no human characteristics. I cannot recall a single line spoken by Hrithik in any of these films. I can remember Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Aishwarya Rai speaking, but not Hrithik. He is all pouts, glares and snarls. A Bollywood hero in the Khan mould, or in the Dilip-Raj-Dev mould essays romantic characters in unforgettable romantic films. I know Hrithik started with KNPH, but he is no romantic hero, just as Sunny Deol might have started with Betaab, but he is no romantic hero. Another way heroes like Dilip-Raj-Dev or Shahrukh-Salman-Aamir connect with audiences is through humour, the lightness of touch. Hrithik is total zero in that department. His attempt at a light-hearted role in MPKDH was pathetic.

Films like Bang Bang and Mahnejodaro will reveal this even further. The future belongs to Ranbirs and ranveers, Arjuns and Varuns, not to Hrithik. He will have his odd action, sci-fi or period hit every now and then. But he will never rule the hearts of the people way the Khans do.

    • That is very unfari to Hrithik – he has carved a niche for him and is still capable giving solo-hero superhits. Guzaarish is his finest performance so far and Agneepath and ZNMD had the collections because of his star-power. If you do not like him – that is fine but certainly HR has come a long way and because of his failing helath and a conscious decision to do less films – he may not have got his due – but neverthless a force to reckon with still. One can not down his sincerity in any of his films as an actor – even in the flop ones – he did. Just check his expressions in this song from Guzaarish where he is confined to a chair and as aish performs – the expressions change on his face – priceless!

  27. And what is this about making someone’s trash work? Dilip Kumar could never make Shammi Kapoor’s trash work. Rajesh Khanna could never make Jeetendra’s trash work. I don’t see what is so glorious about making trash work? Being a legendary star is not about making trash work, but making good stuff work. Aamir is what he is because he makes films like Lagaan, DCH, RDB , TZP and 3 Idiots work. Ranbir is Ranbir because he takes Barfi to 100 crores and YJHD to 180 crores while Hrithik cannot take Guzaarish or Kites to half these figures. Dlip Kumar si Dilip Kumar because he made Devdas work , because he made Mughal-e-Azam work gloriously

True Dilip Kumar is elevated for MEA, GJ, etc. Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh, Aamir etc for their good & great movies. Greatness come from great work.

True there is no glory in making trash, leave alone making it work. No one sets out to make trash. As they say, “shit happens”. It is an accident. But it is “a” sure sign of star power to be able to cushion the trash at the BO . To be able to make lemonade out of a lemon is something that only a star can do.

I agree with your analysis of Hrithik. Along with what you have pointed out, I too would have placed him in the same bracket as SRK, Aamir & Salman if he possesed a film or two that he had soft landed at BO. No doubt HR’s success elevates him to almost near the top bracket , but needs more to go past that glass ceiling.

  28. I am perhaps in minority here in finding Dhoom 2 utterly listless and barely watchable. What was the film about? I just cannot tell if anyone asks me. To be honest I was half-sleeping through the film, waking up only when the dance numbers of Hrithik or Ash came up, which of course were worth the price of the ticket. Dhoom 3, on the other hand, had a an epic story at the core. The business of the ‘ double’ and the one hidden away from the world being awakened by love and wanting to come out and claim his place in the world is a truly high-concept core that gives the film its soul and its heft. Aamir did a great job in these sections of the film. As did Katrina. What spoils it and stops it from being a great film or even a genuinely good film, is the misfit that this element has with the crap elements of the ‘franchise’. The motorcycle stunts, the bank robbery and stuff are a big bore and I mentally switched off during those mindless sequences. But overall, a fascinating concept film, which works only half way.

Dhoom 3 would have been a great Aamir success story if he had developed it under his production umbrella independent of the par for the course “Dhoom”.

I can see why he accepted this movie. I can also see why he later had cold feet and had to be kept away (as one hears) from the final edit.

    • Well said Utkal. Dhoom 3 had at its core a great story idea– and it is these intense parts that worked. I am guessing that it is this that attracted Aamir to the film at a storyboard level. Aamir is a fan and a last remnant of the Dilip Kumar school of Hindi cinema. In fact Aamir in this film brought to mind Dilip’s classic Ram aur Shyam, a film I’ve watched in a cinema, as a kid. In Dhoom 3 it was quite a thrill to watch the sudden appearance of the other hidden brother, the undervalued one. In an interview Aamir seemed to hint at something– that the sibling tale touched him in a relatable way. The mistake was in tying this touching tale to the Dhoom franchise. So the film was stupid in parts but also very good in parts. I loved the acrobatic song dance sequences, especially the memerizing Malang.Katrina shone in her role, but Aamir managed to hold his own in this film’s basically young crowd.
I feel that Dhoom3 was streets ahead of that other Aamir turkey Mela. That’s one film I have never watched ( on tv)beyond the first half hour to a max 40 minutes.

I liked Dhoom 1. Dhoom 2 did nothing for me.

If Aamir had made the movie into a Aamir Khan movie, without the Dhoom franchise and Dhoom elements, it would have been by far his best entertainer.

But it would have made 175+ instead of 250+ The better movie would have come at a cost.

At least they corrected the errors of Dhoom 2 which was basically a free ride for people associated with it.

Also – “Jodha Akbar perhaps is the only exception, but even there he is a historical figure, an emperor” – can you name few heroes who can carry Akbar’s role with such an aplomb?? aamir may carry off but the physiqe-part might fail him – Ajay may do it but not as versatilely as HR ……..

And I don’t see why everyone should compete with the Khans? Akki has his own fan following and so has HR……….acting-wise and over-all star-appeal-wise – for me: HR is better than SRK and even Sallu…….and don’t forget that Sallu started giving BB films in last few years only (on a consistent basis) – same may happen with HR also…..

Hrithik sure van get a few expression right, but the overall arc of his performance has a distancing effect. As far as performance as an emperor / king is concerned, we will see Ranveer soon as Bajirao, then we will know.

While this works very well for SRK or Salman (whose ardent fans want to see the superstar and not the character), it just does not work for Hrithik. He just does not have the charisma or connect. His fans see him for his physicality, and every character of his revolves around that physicality.
Personally, I find his dancing great, but also effeminate.

      • That exactly is my worry. Hritik should not get into the ‘acting’ mode , he should just stick to action and superhero stuff. I liked Krrish 3 more than many others here but even there that whole jaw shaking and going all teary in the ‘See-I-Can-act’ mode sucked. In any case Bang Bang kind of movie should not need acting and if one does the mistake of taking the movie too seriously and display acting chops when none is needed then it can go off rails. It is a movie which should be taken lightly and enjoyed…

        • Knight and Day itself was a 2 hour movie, add 6 songs and you’re at 2.5 hours. The good thing is that there’s literally no time to add “acting” parts to this movie because Siddharth Anand is not going to make a 3 hour movie. Maybe for a minute or two when he’s about to rescue Katrina who has been kidnapped in the end or right before a final fight scene with the villain, but besides that it should be action scene to song to light comedy scene to song to action scene to “I love you” scene to song to action scene to the scene where Tom Cruse is “missing” to song to action scene and then a song at the end credits.

The music for both films are likely to be of the same level. And the two directors are more or less on the even keel. Both are coming out in good release periods with long holiday weekends etc. So the BO figures will show what Aamir brought in extra , (if this falls short of Dhoom 3) , through his script sense, stardom and performance.
