  1. Haider Has Decent First Week

    Box Office India Trade Network

Haider grossed a decent 35 crore nett in its extended eight day first week and held up fairly well over the eight days but the problem for the film is its very niche and the collections are coming mainly from the premium multiplexes so there is a limit to where the film can go.

The film has done its best business in the Delhi NCR belt with the Delhi/UP and East Punjab circuits recording decent figures, Mysore was also fair while West Bengal was helped by holidays for Puja. Mumbai circuit was the disappointment as Mumbai city and Pune should have done better. The mass circuits were dull.

Haider will have a decent hold in week two and should have lifetime business of around 50 crore nett which is an average result..

  2. Bang Bang Has Good First Week But Trend Not Good
    Friday 10 October 2014 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bang Bang (Hindi) had a good extended eight day first week of around 115 crore nett but considering the amount of holidays that were there the collections were not as good as they should be. Also on the weekdays its decent hold was due to holidays but when there are holidays the hold should not be decent but good. At centres where there was no holiday from Tuesday onwards the film did show noticeable drops in collections.

The trend does not look good for week two as it will not get support of holidays. The best case scenario for the film looks around 150 crore nett for lifetime business. It is possible it may fall short of that mark and much will depend on the business in the second weekend.

The film has collected well in multiplexes of big centres but it was the business of multiplexes and single screens in B and C centres which let the film down. The collections across the Hindi belt were not up to the mark. Only Bihar was good but that had holidays for Puja. Gujarat, CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan and UP all had average to above average figures which is not good for a film of this scale.

    • Not particularly pleasing numbers for BB. Even taking the producer figures which are around 135 crore (note also an 8 day figure not 7) compared to Kicks 165 crore, Dhoom 3 189 crore, CE 157 crore, ETT 156 crore it is way behind. In fact it will probably not even have the legs to get to D3’s first week total itself, BOI or producer or whatever sources.

      • yes poor numbers by any stretch. if anything BOI continue to be far too kind in terms of their commentary. Hrithik has had two clear under performers/failures in two big films (Krrish, Bang Bang). This isn’t even like Agneepath where at least the week 1 numbers were very high. But as usual some of the fans who start off with the highest predictions come around for brownie points later. Sooner or later someone will also pop up saying ‘hey even his flop made so much’!

  3. Top Domestic Opening Weeks All Time Bang Bang 7th
    Friday 10 October 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bang Bang had the seventh highest first week collections ever as it grossed a little less than 110 crore nett. The collections were less than Hrithik Roshan’s last film Krrish 3 despite it having a more favourable release date.

The first week number of Bang Bang of around 110 crore is a good number but with just a good release date with maximum holidays it should have got a higher number. The first week is well short of the top grossers despite the first week being a holiday or part holiday practically very day.

The first week figures of Bang Bang are the third best of the year after Kick and Singham Returns. Below are the top opening weeks of All Time.

  4. As I had said, it will probably wrap up af around the Singham Returns range.

For Katrina, it’s not going to be a major set-back because she always seems to have other commercial potboilers lined up. In Hrithik’s case, it is a set back because when you look at his line-up, he has nothing coming up until Mohenjodaro in 2016. By that time the Khans and Ranbir and Akshay and Devgan will have lined up several releases amongst themsleves and the 300cr barrier will probably be overcome. And even Mohenjodaro looks far from being the safest bet in that respect.

Hrithik certainly needs to line up more releases. One set back does him more harm because it will now take him at least a couple of years to return back to the top bracket.

  6. New Releases Dull – Bang Bang And Haider Lead But Fall
    Friday 10 October 2014 14.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The new releases opened to very dull collections with Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami having the best collections of the lot at multiplexes but the occupancies were just 5%. Tamanchey has the widest release of all the releases but it makes no difference as its screen average is a disaster

The releases were Ekkees Tooppon Ki Salaami, Jigariya, Spark, Tamanchey amongst a couple of very low budget films. None of the films have much of a chance as the opening is low and the sort of pick up the need does not really happen.

It will be Bang Bang and Haider which will continue to lead at the box office but they have also dropped significantly from their respective collections from last Friday which was the second day for both films.

That’s what the prize is: an euphemism not to stop existing wars, but to NOT adventure into newer wars..

bottom line is that this movie should’ve done a lot more. This was Hrithiks terrain, had katrina (coming hot off her D3 success). Hrithik has lost touch with a certain demographic whereas I think Ranbir, Ranveer have gained that audience from him. I’m beginning to think only SRK, Sallu and Aamir belong in the top tier now.

Katrina beats Deepika, Priyanka in the race to Madame Tussauds
          October 5, 2014 bhavdeepnama 9898 reads 130 comments

Katrina Kaif will be the fourth Bollywood actress to have a wax statue at Madame Tussauds. It is said that her statue will be unveiled in 2015.
The team at the wax museum started a contest a few months ago asking the people to vote for the next Bollywood superstar to appear at Madame Tussauds London and the options were Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif. It is said that Katrina has won the spot with maximum votes, beating Deepika and Priyanka.
In a recent interview when quizzed about her wax statue at Madame Tussauds, Katrina said, “There is no official announcement on that yet, there is a process which is happening.”
The actress has reportedly done fittings for the statue but her look is still not decided. It will be either from “Chikni chameli” in “Agneepath”, “Sheila ki jawani” in “Tees Maar Khan”, or something from “Dhoom:3”.
Katrina will join the list of Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Kareena Kapoor Khan, to have a wax replica at the museum.
Big B was the first Bollywood celebrity to enter Madame Tussauds. He is also the first living Asian to have a wax statue there. Aishwarya was the first B’Town diva to get a wax replica at Madame Tussauds.
Now, we can only wait to see which look Katrina chooses.

Actually given their line up, I don’t think any other actor can break into the top 2 until 2016/2017. And yes I am grouping the 3 Khans together and at this moment it is completely justified as no Khan is significantly lower than the other 2 currently unlike the last 25 years.

    • This is not a knock on Aamir and or Hirani, but so far the PK roll out has been a disaster. The naked Aamir was an atrocity. Then the follow up turned into a fancy costume farce. Now they appear to direct the effort with the focus on Anushka.

This is not to say the movie itself will also be a disaster. Clearly Hirani has an excellent track record. Moreover Aamir is one of the more smarter Bollywood stars.

Like the rest of the Bollywood fans, I too am eagerly waiting for a turn around. After suffering a naked Aamir, the public wants substance, the public demands substance, it will not be baffled by bull crap. Without the naked Aamir disaster, any mediocre song & dance would have been acceptable, BUT NOW the spot light is on, and the microscope is out. Aamir got naked and the public will examine every crease and crevice of PK.

Perhaps the chemistry cudve been a bit tighter, somehow they cud not recreate ZNMD. HR needs to loosen up a bit, at times he is taking himself too seriously. And he is indeed weak at dialogs, he tends to eat up words or does not give the right inflection at the right moment. Eg, I literally cud not understand his rapid English, and figured out from the English subtitles. Also, Danny did not impress as much in this outing, I was expecting more ‘dhamaka’ out of him.
But I wager that had this starred the 3Khans, it wud surely have been zooming towars 200crs. Perhaps HRs starpower is a bit lower now.

‘Anthony Gonsalves’ is someone any Indian born in post independence India would easily know. It was a character Bachchan played in 1977 cult hit Amar Akbar Anthony. Along with Lata Mangeshkar, there’s one name that comes to mind when you think entertainment – Amitabh Bachchan.
It must take something God-given to be loved by such a spectrum of people. I vaguely recall college-going cousins keeping day-long fasts and praying for Amitabh Bachchan when death came knocking at his doorsteps after the unfortunate accident during the shooting of Coolie. I recall my uncle’s driver Liaqaat telling me as a 10-year old how his favourite Amitabh was Iqbal from Coolie and how his much-loved song was the one Iqbal sings as pilgrims leave for Hajj in the film. I recall how daddy, bhai and myself would all break into UP bhaiyya style jig, with various degrees of grotesqueness, as Bombay Doordashan’s Hindi music programme Chhaya Geet would run ‘Mere Anganey Mein Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai’ from Laawaris.
It is in these little moments that an abiding image of the man, his craft, his staying power and finally his legend emerges. For most parts, Amitabh Bachchan is famous for belittling his greatness, much to the disgust, actually revulsion, of an avid fan like yours truly. Big B remains one of the most powerful images of modern India.
If pre-independent India lived with the romance of a Gandhi, Nehru and many other stalwarts of the freedom movement, post 1947 India owes much to its popular culture (cricket and Bollywood) for being the emblems of Indianness, however flawed.

  17. Bang Bang Has Big Drop On Second Friday
    Saturday 11 October 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bang Bang (Hindi) dropped badly on its second Friday as it collected around 3-3.25 crore nett. the drop is a huge 85% from last Friday which was the second day of the film. The drop is huge despite no competition from the new releases.

The film will struggle to put up a strong second week total and the film is unlikely to hit the 150 crore nett. The cracks were there in the collections earlier but holidays in various parts of the country made the all India daily collections reasonable. The second weekend of the film is liely to be around the 13 crore nett mark.

The second Friday collections are less than Kick, Holiday – A Solidier IS Never Off Duty, 2 States, Singham Returns and Jai Ho. It is the ninth day for Bang Bang as compared to eight for the other films but a 3 crore second Friday is low for a like Bang Bang which is much bigger budget than the films above. The second Friday is nearly 50% less than what Hrithik Roshan’s last film Krrish 3 grossed on its second Friday.

The collections of Haider came down a lot on its second Friday as it collected in the 1.35-1.45 crore nett region. The fall is around 80% from its first Friday which was the second day of release for the film..

Haider had held up well in the first seven days of release but the drop came on day eight and a further drop on day nine. This is mainly as it only has an audience at premium multiplexes and the audience at other places has not appreciated it. The premium multiplexes of Delhi NCR have held pretty well and now are collecting more than Bang Bang when day one had started at 70% lower than Bang Bang.

Haider should collect around 6-6.50 crore nett in its second weekend and lifetime business will find it hard to reach 50 Crore nett, probably falling a crore or two short.

      • the thing is Haider has no room for error. It was stable at the lower end and certainly with this director’s movies you can never expect a big one. Kaminey because of the music and the relatively more mainstream urban setting got off to a strong start (again relative to the director’s other work) but still came down later. Now I’d expect Haider to be a bit better over the weekend. A lot of movies these days fall on the second Fri but again it has no room for error.

        • yes 50 isn’t bad at all for this sort of thing. Because films in a certain format let alone edgy political films (whether you agree with the politics or not) are never going to get to 100 or whatever. Which has been my point all along. When ‘different’ films are celebrated for reach a 100 or whatever that is the surest sign that they’re not radically different or anything (though they still get credit for doing this). Meanwhile the edgier stuff even with major stars always underperforms (of course not everything that underperforms with a star is edgy!).

Box Office: ‘Bang Bang’ inching towards Rs 150 crores, ‘Haider’ towards Rs 50 crores in domestic market

Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Bang Bang’ is going rock steady at the box office while Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Haider’ is also picking up with good word of mouth, even after a week of the film’s release.

According to a report in Koimoi.com, Bang Bang raked in approximately Rs 4 crores on its second Friday. The film has certainly made its way to the top as the total domestic BO collection stands at Rs 139.45 crores. While this is touted as a big release, the report further adds that the film is soon set to cross the Rs 150 crore mark in the domestic market

    • There are all sorts of articles on this movie box office and like Krish-3 murmurs have begun again & HR credibility taking a bigger hit. Here is one such piece –

Guess this recently released film which actually isn’t doing as well as it is being said!

HR is overdoing these things with all sorts of projections and should just accept people’s verdict on his film and try to better them. But for that to happen one needs maturity which seems lacking with this type of a yoyo. If you go by pinkvilla articles and the comments there under by few his self obsession /narcissism may now be one of the reason Suzzane may have called it quits. Living-in with this type of Qtiyapa on a 24/7 bss can be taxing and she may have opted out after giving him enough time to mature.

Though previously done unsuccessfully after KNPH, he must once again give it a chance to do some real movies for a change. Incidentally if I remember correctly Vishal B. wanted him for Haider and he could have mixed things and explored himself as an actor with this kind of project. If not box-office at least Shahid is now being taken seriously as an actor. He should also think of doing something which is more relatable for a change to mix things up. There is no harm to try an aamir of munna in Rangeela and do dus ka tees tapori to breakaway and surprise everyone. But it seems he is too much of funko / scared and has dropped couple of projects just to go back to krish 4 with his dad going by his latest interviews.

As I suggested BB kind of movie would have been more a 90-110 cr lifetime deal if it was a fri /mon thing but for these 6/8 straight holidays/festivities acknowledged by all media expert, added with Katrina’s super-stardom will give it some kind of passable result. Its time a younger star consider breaking the monopoly and prevent a Kick kind of results/totals for trashy movies.

  20. BTW, for people who were frustrated with the one-sided viewpoint of Haider, just go watch Bang Bang for another one-sided viewpoint: The villain is named Omar Zafar. His second in command is Hamid Gul! And the rest of them are named after members of the Pakistani Cricket Team!
Now I know why they underperformed. Haider lost the Hindu RIght, BB lost the ones on the Left.

      • For anyone interested there is a Pakistani film called as “Waar” (which released last year) which is almost a revenge on those Anil Sharma-Sunny Deol films. The film’s plot has Pakistani being rattled by terrorists from outside the border…India is not specifically “named” as the country instigating these terror attacks in Pak, but not much is left to imagination when the villain is clearly shown to be slipping into Pakistan from across the Indian border of Kashmir. Also there is mention of RAW which is shown linked to the attacks in the country. It’s not a good film by any means, but it’s pretty slick for an action thriller and has some nicely staged action scenes.

So, clearly, it wasn’t talking about Pakistan in any way.

  21. Fantastic piece by Pragya Tiwari on the sort of “teachings” some Right Wing fundamentalists are providing. Incidentally the minute she wrote this piece, she has been getting rape and murder threats on twitter etc-

In praise of Hemu: Medieval king reveals true intent of Hindutva history-

    http://www.firstpost.com/india/rewriting-history-hindutva-subramanian-swamys-xenophobia-close-1749171.html?utm_content=bufferb1f70&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

“A couple of days ago Satish Mittal, former professor at Kurukshetra University and author of “40 books and 400 articles”, had helpfully explained the purpose of this event to me.

“Our history has been distorted by Western, Muslim, Communist and Secularist historians. The Western historians wanted to spread Christianity and help England to rule over us, the Muslims wanted to spread Islam, the Communists wanted Mao to come to India and turn us into atheists.” He did not say what the Secularists wanted but did add that all of the above were mercenaries, writing falsehoods in exchange for power, property and money.

“The story of Hemu, or Hemchandra Vikramaditya, is summed up as follows – He had humble beginnings but worked his way up, becoming indispensible to a string of Afghan rulers until he finally established himself on the throne of Delhi on the 5th of October, 1556 and set up a Hindu Rashtra after hundreds of years.

We are told that he proved to be a stellar administrator in his 29 day rule. Also that his first Ghoshana Patra (decree) banned cow slaughter and declared that anyone practicing it would be beheaded. Further, he issued a list of corrupt officials and took action against them, altered policy to make his kingdom more business friendly and made new appointments.

At this point Hemu’s life story is beginning to sound suspiciously like the ‘Myth of Narendra Modi set in Medieval Times’. Every medieval era historian I speak with outside of ABISY tells me that very little is known about Hemu.

None of them has come across any evidence or study that refers to the establishment of a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ or Ghoshana Patras. “If they have these decrees let them put it out. It will change the way we understand medieval Indian history,” says Sunil Kumar, Professor of Medieval History at Delhi University, calling the claim “astonishing” because “medieval documents were not called ghoshana patras”.

“No king in that period would have put out a plan for intrusive governance so soon after taking control. Consolidation was always a slow process,” he adds.

The Ghoshana Patras are not shown at the symposium but the organizers do screen a “documentary” to prop up their claims. Curiously it largely consists of scenes from Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2008 Hindi film, Jodhaa Akbar. A film that was initially either banned or not released in some Indian states after sections of the Rajput community alleged that it intends to distort history.”..

This martyrdom of Hemu is what entrenches his credentials as a desh-bhakt for ABISY. “The Hindu king led from the front in the Second Battle of Panipat and was close to defeating the foreign army of Bairam Khan, regent to a very young Muslim ruler Akbar, when an arrow hit him, changing the course of India’s history forever. He was captured and killed and his head was taken to Kabul and exhibited,” says Mittal.

When I ask him why Akbar cannot qualify as an ‘Indian’, Mittal gives me two reasons.

One, that he always kept “dreaming of Central Asia where his forefathers had come from” and two, that he was an “illiterate man” who “mixed alcohol and opium and consumed copious amounts of this cocktail”.

When I remind him of Akbar’s state policy of Sulh-i-kuI (religious tolerance) and equal patronage to all faiths that made him unpopular with the Ulama of his time, Mittal summarily says, “his secularism was a political maneuver, not his conviction.” I am not entirely sure what his sources are ,but this conversation is beginning to sound more like the BJP and its supporters’ slander campaign against political opponents – be they Rahul Gandhi’s holidays abroad or Priyanka Gandhi “drinking too much alcohol”- than anything we know about Akbar.

“This martyrdom of Hemu is what entrenches his credentials as a desh-bhakt for ABISY.

“To call Hemu a patriot would be to suggest that the idea of India as a political state existed in 1556. “There were mentions of Hindustan in that period but it meant different things to different people,” explains Farhat Hasan, Professor of Medieval History at Delhi University. “Identities were extremely parochial- limited to caste, kin and village.” Which is also what makes the idea of Akbar as a foreigner less than credible. “For most people anyone outside their village would have been a foreigner,” says Hasan.

More problematic is the attempt to frame this as a story of Hindu-Muslim conflict. “Merging of different religious, cultural and social identities into one homogenous identity of ‘Muslim’ is a later development,” says Bhairabi Prasad Sahu, Professor of Ancient History at Delhi University. “There was a lot of borrowing- not conscious but liminal – from each other’s cultural and sacred traditions so it is anachronistic to talk of Hindus and Muslims as well-entrenched or uniform religious identities,” explains Hasan.”

“Hemu’s own final battle is more accurately a chapter in the extended strife between Afghans and Mughals in India.

“It was common for ‘Hindu’ chieftains to collaborate with ‘Muslim’ Sultans against common enemies. The Sharqi Sultans of Jaunpur and the Lodis of Delhi both had Rajput confederates in their armies as they battled with each other,” says Kumar.

So Hemu who worked closely with Sher Shah Suri and Adil Shah actually represented the Afghan forces in battles. His army in the battle of Panipat is likely to have consisted of large numbers of Afghan soldiers.

But despite these complexities, the symposium on Hemu seems determined to reduce his life to that of a Hindutvavadi nationalist.

Subramanian Swamy in his nakedly communal speech says it was due to the struggle of people like Hemu that Muslims and Christians failed to convert “80 percent of Hindus. That is the reason ISIS wants to come back to India. To finish the unfinished task.”

“Equally blatant are the political motives behind this effort. “In the elections this year when just over 30 percent of this 80 percent got together see what they could accomplish. Next time more Hindus will unite and vote,” says Swamy.

Mittal reminds us that Hemu banned cow slaughter as soon as he came to power, but cow slaughter has not been banned in independent India. “This is all because of Nehru.”

Nehru, who according to Swamy “listened to no one but Edwina Mountbatten” and was determined to keep India “a junior partner of the British commonwealth.” Jibes against Sonia Gandhi being from Italy are thrown in with even lesser pretext.

The communalization of this chapter goes well beyond Hemu’s life. The symposium expresses outrage over the alleged encroachment of Hemu’s memorial in Panipat. “It is a Muslim dominated area and they have built a dargah there. It is shameful,” says Vinayak Deshpande. The natural leap from this is Babri Masjid (named, according to a sniggering Swamy, after a young boy Babur was having an illicit affair with) and the Mathura temple. Swamy pledges to “resolve” both matters. “Muslims should cooperate otherwise we have other ways,” he says.”

“In the final speech of the afternoon Bal Mukund Pandey compares Hindus to the tiger who killed a young boy in the Delhi Zoo recently.

“They might not have hunted for many years but that does not mean they have forgotten how to hunt,” he says. The deceased was a “mentally challenged Muslim boy. When he was about to be eaten he did not say Allah but folded his hands in front of the tiger,” he adds smugly. If this is how they spin the voluble present imagine what liberties they might take with the silent past.

  28. Fantastic Piece by Deepak on the Politics of Haider..Incidentally- read it !!
Although he appears to condemn the path of violence opted by the separatists in Kashmir, he also tacitly justifies it (through the character arc of Haider) as a natural reaction to the Indian Army’s alleged excesses in the Valley under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

Despite the charitable references to the Army’s yeoman work during the recent floods at the fag end of the film (by which time the damage is already done), Haider has the cumulative effect of painting the Army and the Indian State with a manipulative and diabolical brush
Not to question the director’s freedom and prerogative, but if “realism” is truly Bhardwaj’s obsession, surely the natural and human reaction of an Indian soldier who finds himself in an extremely hostile and treacherous environment is worth alluding to, in howsoever fleeting a manner.

But then that wouldn’t have won Bhardwaj the raving approval and endorsement of the left-liberal cabal in and outside Bollywood, nor would addressing the elephant in the room–the role of radical Islamists in Kashmir’s politics and its consequences for non-Muslims in Kashmir. That Bhardwaj’s take on Kashmir is superficial, clichéd and populist is borne from his effort to draw tacit parallels between Gaza and Kashmir through his Chomsky-esque reference to Kashmir as a prison. This must have really warmed the cockles of Kashmiri separatists who have left no stone unturned in internationalizing the dispute with the able support of the left and in drawing contrived symmetries between the Palestinians and Kashmiris.

    • You see, every community, except the Hindus, is entitled to “react naturally” to alleged excesses and perceived victimization. “Natural reaction” is only human and never communal when it comes from non-Hindus, more so when it is directed at Hindus.

      Like

    • Also, as required by the only acceptable definition of “secularism” and “syncretic tradition” in this great land of ours, every movie on Kashmir must necessarily accept and perpetuate the myth that Kashmir has always been a Muslim majority region, and its Hindu roots and remnants (if any) are but a vestige of the past best forgotten and stamped out to give way to a more “secular” present.

For instance, in the movie, when an Army officer asks the character Haider his native place, Shahid Kapoor’s Haider answers “Islamabad” with righteous defiance just to irk the officer. We are then told that Anantnag (where Basharat Peer hails from) is locally referred to as “Islamabad”, bringing to memory the recent controversy surrounding the re-naming of the Shankaracharya Temple in Srinagar to Takht-e-Sulaiman. Conveniently again, Bhardwaj does not dwell on the issue further because we wouldn’t want to hurt “secular” sentiments, would we?

In the interest of preserving secular clichés and harmony, we must let remnants of Hindu culture such as temples serve as props for a shoot, or more frequently as natural targets of natural reactions from the victimized denizens of the Valley.

      Like

    • Fantastic…. excerpts from above link!!
The politically incorrect version would be one where the absence of an armed struggle by Kashmiri Hindus in response to the savagery meted out to them and their culture is highlighted to drive home the message of peace and the futility of vengeance. But then, that version would have been received with stone-pelting (with ample encouragement from “brothers” across the border), a not-so-non-violent demand for a ban on the movie, fatwas calling for the heads of the entire crew of the film, threats from the underworld, and the “communal” tag from “intellectuals” in Bollywood.

Now which street smart director from Bollywood would want that kind of trouble on his hands? Isn’t it easier to simply play the righteous rebel by targeting the soft Indian State? Smart move Vishal!
