  1. After Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor to do a cameo in The Shaukeens
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, October 29, 2014 – 11:00 hrs IST

It sure looks like Abhishek Sharma’s The Shaukeens is getting more star-studded with each passing day. Close to the heels of the news that Abhishek Bachchan has done a friendly appearance in the film, we now hear that Kareena Kapoor too stars in a cameo.

According to sources, though the makers are keeping quiet about it, the fact is that Bebo shot for the film a few days back at a studio in Bandra, Mumbai. The actress was already engaged in a photo-shoot at the same studio so she requested the makers of The Shaukeens to organize their shoot too at the venue.

Director Abhishek Sharma has been so impressed with Bebo’s scene that he’s been raving about it to one and all. When we spoke to him, his excitement was palpable. “I had never worked with Kareena before this,” he says. “When she is in front of the camera, she is just electrifying. And she has such great comic timing – we had a blast.”

Our source reveals, “In fact, when the two met at the shoot, Kareena and Sharma got along like a house on fire. Though she hadn’t seen his first film (Tere Bin Laden), she told him she had heard great things about it. She even expressed a keen desire to watch The Shaukeens before she leaves for Delhi in the first week of November for a film shooting.”

Interestingly, the last film that Kareena and Abhishek were a part of was J.P. Dutta’s LoC Kargil, which released in December 2003. Now, 11 years later, they come together once more for The Shaukeens.

They are more a social menace than nation demolishers but from business point they are hugely unpopular and probably that is the reason they could not come back to power for good 15 years until the Modi wave took over everything . Mukesh looked like clown. Anil and his family were missing. Modiji spend extra time with bigb and talked to Aish as well. Saif and his wife#2 were in second row and completely ignored. Overall the ‘stars’ were cheap suck or awe struck by PM or both. PM’s speech was superb as always. P.S. have you seen Rekha’s interviews (super naani promos)? She is looking younger with age, lol. He has paid no heed to Assam and other Eastern states perishing in floods. He has not expressed any sentiments regarding sectarian violence. So saying it is normal for PMs to go around cutting ribbons of rich man’s hospitals is so lame.

  4. Someone in the previous thread asked why is HNY not doing well –

Well HNY is lucky what it has been doing and this is all thanks to Diwali bonanza and ‘must watch a movie’ deal during this period. ..

Also the promos sort of assisted in minimizing the reactions as the expectations were low. Like me, many watched the movie on a very very superficial level otherwise backlash may have been much more severe. Now after watching that Vigil Idiot comic review / depiction, there were so many wide gaping holes in the story that it would have been thrashed much more severely/ intensely .

Agree with Krish when he says – ‘After seeing last few movies of SRK I wonder if he even tries to act in his movies. Its become more of a ‘smile a bit, smirk a bit, show the dimples’ kind of routine.”

  9. Singham Returns Still Leads Bang Bang – All India Comparison
    Thursday 30 October 2014 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bang Bang is struggling to cross the nett business of Singham Returns. After three weeks it is around 25 lakhs nett less and it may not even cover this much as it was playing on very few screens in week four. Even if it does go ahead in terms of nett business, the distributor share of Singham returns will still be more.

The main reason why Singham Returns has done better is Mumbai circuit as can be seen below, the gap between these two films in this circuit is simply huge. The difference is coming from Gujaraat where Singham Returns proved to be a blockbuster and Bang Bang was damp squib

Bang Bang was better in the South be it the multiplexes or singles screens of Nizam/ Andhra (not including Marathawada where Singham Returns was better), Mysore and Tamil Nadu/Kerala. East was also better for Bang Bang but that was due to and extended holiday week.

Below are the three week figures of Bang Bang and lifetime figures of Singham Returns from each circuit in India.

Roar and Super Nani will go unnoticed this week as Happy New Year continues its good run into week two. The collections of Happy New Year did drop over the week but they are still at fairly good levels which means another healthy total in week two.

Roar and Super Nani have little face value and will really be fighting amongst themselves to see which one comes out on top. multiplexes are likely to see better collections for Super Nani and Roar should bet better at single screens in areas like East and Central India but overall it will be very low collections.

There will be a few other releases as well and coincidently a film named Main Shahrukh Khan Banna Chahata Hoon may release in a few circuits.

Nana Patekar once spoke a dialogue about the things that one mosquito can do. Well, we are not sure about other things, but the insect is surely capable of spreading diseases like dengue which is affecting many people in Mumbai currently, including Bollywood stars.

While the whole of Mumbai is reeling under the sway of the dreaded diseases, it is the 62 year old veteran actor Rishi Kapoor who is afflicted by the virus. Kapoor was immediately admitted to Lilavati Hospital. News reports state that Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with dengue but there are early symptoms of malaria too. That explained the reasons of him being unwell in the recent few days. Speaking about husband Rishi’s present condition, his wife Neetu Kapoor said that he was ‘getting better’.

Bollywood Hungama wishes Rishi Kapoor a speedy recovery.

Happy New Year Has Very Good First Week
    Friday 31 October 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Happy New Year has grossed a huge 134 crore nett in its first week and the second highest first week of the year after Kick which grossed around 155 crore nett. The film had strong weekend and its all India collections were good on Monday and Tuesday but it fell on Wednesday.

Despite the falls in the latter part of the week it has still racked up a big first week number as Mumbai circuit has put up a fantastic number of around 46 crore nett and Gujarat could be an all time record for week one when the finally numbers come.

The film has not up held up with strongly but its not bad either and the second week will contribute a healthy total. The hold is not as strong as Kick but better than other big films this year like Singham Returns, Bang Bang and Jai Ho so second week figures should be higher than those films

    Like

    • yes going by BOI numbers (and people should note how the commentary here is still so ‘kind’) more than 180 might be a challenge unless the second weekend is a bit stronger than the trend currently indicates. With the producer total it might touch 200. 20 crores behind Kick is quite a bit. Contrary to what BOI are saying it wasn’t a strong weekend. It was an exceptional first day. The rest of the weekend didn’t trend well.

      Like

      • I think BOI is clearly mentioning it is better than Singham Returns, Bang Bang and Jai Ho. Also, everyone here are comparing it with movies which had holidays on weekdays (like Dhoom3, Kick, CE, so on). Just pick up any film without holidays and you’ll see its not the worst trending film.

I don’t want to support the trend here but everyone is missing the holidays part on weekdays while doing the comparison.

        • actually people were talking and beating D3 before its release, huge expectation i think came to a shock, after release it shock-waves were not as strong as seem.,its confirmed now that even srk films are no longer has monopoly , It confirms now that D3 will be th bench mark..it will not even beat CE record, lol

          Like

        • It is a poorly trending film. there’s really no way to get around it. Sat and especially Sun were weak. There’s no film of any kind that does poorly on Sun unless it’s going to be poor overall. No film does less on Sun than Fri let alone by such a huge margin. The weekdays were alright for a regular film, not for one that started with the biggest initial ever on day 1 and beat D3 by a significant margin. As for it being better than Bang Bang yes of course because by BOI the film didn’t do more than 140. Singham did a bit more than this. But neither of those films had such high numbers on day 1. And Bang Bang itself is a failure. Much like K3 was a failure too. You can’t end up in YJHD range and say that the standards for that film apply to HNY or K3! Maybe one doesn’t want to use the word failure and simply call it an underperformance. That’s fine given the low standards of ‘hits’ today. But how can it be ok when it’s way behind CE at this point? Anything lower and it would be an outright disaster! In fact even a film like ETT which completely fizzled out after seven days or so was quite strong for that period. Then there are other films that are strong at least over the weekend. There are those that dip Sat and then have a very healthy Sun number. HNY doesn’t fall into any of these categories. Now as for the weekday numbers it might have a certain base of support at the lower end which might even ensure a decent second weekend all things considered. But that kind of support isn’t enough to make the film a success of any sort. The only question here is whether it does 180 or 200.

        • “No film does less on Sun than Fri let alone by such a huge
          margin.”

Agree but if Fri is a holiday and then gets more people than expected. If Fri was 35, Sat 31, Sun 32.. it wouldn’t have been so bad. But Friday it did more than anyone’s expectation and from 2nd day it is doing as CE or any recent big hit.

          Like

        • yes but no film does that much on Fri either, holiday or not. I just think holidays are way overestimated these days. This is a narrative that the trade has spread to explain all kinds of things. Recently BOI themselves admitted that Laxmi Pooja wasn’t the negative many thought it was. Actually no one ever though this (yes ever!) till very recently when it was invented out of thin air. The Diwali period was always considered great for films, no one broke it down like this. But in any case I am not arguing holidays don’t help but these are not complete explanations. A film doesn’t get to D3-like numbers or better on day 1 without inflation being a serious factor (which it wasn’t for HNY). Specially with a 3 hr length. Look at it the other way. I doubt there’s ever more than a 10% margin for any holiday. I’ve given many examples regarding all of this. The classic one is Don. Released in ’06 with JeM. The competition was provided as a reason as was Laxmi Pooja and what not. Don remained just ok in terms of the initial (even low given the hype around it), later on it trended decently. Years later the sequel released unopposed on Christmas and allowing for inflation and so on the collections were anemic in the same way. All those holidays didn’t get it to a flying start let alone anything else. Could it have done a bit less without those holidays? Sure! but again the overall box office picture wasn’t altered because of this. JTHJ released with SOS. Again the former was anemic. Not one might think there’s competition in both cases here. Well OSO released with Saawariya and had a flying start and a strong week 1 total anyway. Though Sawaarya flopped it still had a flying start of its own on Fri and did post a healthy weekend. So it’s not as if this was no competition while the sluggish JeM (which didn’t trend too badly at a low level) was. But then you think about SOS which did quite alright. Well KKHH released with BMCM. The latter had a bigger week but KKHH also had a very strong week (and eventually was the much bigger hit).

So again holidays make a difference but they don’t alter the essential graph of a film. Strong competition can do more but here too a film that has really been liked won’t be completely derailed (smaller films are because of lack of screens and an overall lower profile and so on). RNBDJ a year after OSO grossed as much as that film despite not opening big and despite having Ghajini two weeks later which of course did historic business at the time. As I said some days ago the difference between Jai Ho and Kick isn’t holidays. But note how the opposite position leads one to an absurd conclusion. If every Salman movie released when Jai Ho did we’re essentially saying that he’d be no bigger than Devgan or Akshay!

        • see here:

Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2, Chennai Express (ongoing), the rest of the box office

BOI had 139 for CE first seven days excluding paid previews (with this it was 145). They now have HNY at 134. Given that day 1 was ahead of D3 by a significant margin you obviously have a film falling behind CE the rest of the week. Now holidays might be part of the story here to some extent. On the other hand HNY couldn’t do anything even on Sun when practically every film does. Leaving aside this unless it remains unbelievably stable at this point it matches CE (using in the best case scenario). But bigger films come with greater expectations. CE went from 145 (adding paid previews) to 205 or so. Added a good 70 crores which by the standards of today was pretty good. On the other hand ETT went to 147 or something over an extended week and then just added 40 crores or so to this.

So again it’s not just about looking at things in isolation.

          Like

        • I put up the numbers up. CE had holiday on Thu and it collected almost 20 crores and this raced past the collection of HNY by 5 crores(hindi only and acc to BOI only). Getting more collections on a holiday than regular day is nothing to do with trending. So, inspite additional holiday, it is just 5 crores ahead. Even excluding the regional collections which are around 8-10 crores for the week.

          Like

        • Satyam, Actually HNY is till now pretty close to CE. That difference of 10 crores you are getting is primarily due to the fact that the first Thursday of CE was I-day and it did close to 20 crores. SO removing the first day (which is a huge outlier here), their totals are close to each other. A better indicator would be the second Friday. CE did around 6.5 crores then. Will be interesting to see how much HNY does. I suspect it will be around that figure only.

        • Aug 15 was the 7th day not the first (that was Eid).

But by the 7th day if WOM hadn’t been good enough it couldn’t have capitalized in this way. It’s not as if Ra One would have done the same on day 7! Had there been no holiday the weekend might have been stronger. The point is that barring the very initial period holidays help only if people find the film unmissable. Actually this argument works even more against HNY. Because CE wasn’t that big a deal going in. It surprised everyone but no one would have considered it unmissable before release whereas HNY was something close to this (D3 was another one in an even bigger way). And so to then not show a Sun increase or to keep slipping or even settle down at a relatively ordinary level the WOM had to be that much more negative. If CE had this sort of reception it wouldn’t have exceeded 150 or something!

But again the basic flaw in this argument is excluding days here and there. We can’t exclude that super start because it shows the level of interest the audience had in this film. otherwise you could take any big film subtract a day or a weekend and say it’s doing ok. Or like some other hit. For instance for CE too le’st subtract the Eid number, maybe even the Independence day number but then you have even stronger trending on weekdays! Unless a film is a total disaster it will match some other successful film for a while despite dropping! So if it’s going from 38 crores to 6 crores (BOI numbers, assuming the latter number is true or even if it’s somewhat higher) there’s simply no way to explain this away. And again CE was helped by the holidays but it’s very easy to correlate WOM here with the box office performance of the film. You read the HNY reviews, you consider many of the very negative reactions and the rest isn’t surprising. I thought the base of support for this film might be a bit higher than it has turned out to be but these things are hard to tell. And again one can correlate this with other trends. Even with a whole concert tour the film couldn’t match D3’s numbers in the US. So it’s a number of things. When RNBDJ released it too was a behind Ghajini in the US. Not by a whole lot but it was. The idea that in the US (where SRK had historically been incredible… unlike India where there’s always been a great asymmetry between his press and his box office reality) an action subject could outgross a SRK love story was remarkable. But it matched the Indian narrative (much greater difference here of course). So stuff like holidays and competition and so on are fine as explanations upto a point but there’s a larger reality too. Ultimately the trending doesn’t lie.

having said that hey still has one last hope this weekend. as for the media narrative after the opening day the success idea was more or less baked into the cake. But SRK has been lying low though barring an event or two. He was much more conspicuous and looked happier after OSO. Meanwhile Abhishek’s been really feeding off his reception on social media and elsewhere and the print media seems to have followed.

        • I agree fundamentally with you where you say there is no escape for HNY. It should have been doing better. But the only thing I was saying is the daily figures of the two movies have some similarity barring the first Day of HNY and 7th day of CE. Also considering CE did 6.5 crs on Day 8 and HNY has a chance to do the same on Day 8 there is a chance it can match the numbers what CE put Week 2 onwards. The reason CE did ONLY 70 after Week 1 was the huge amount of releases every week it was facing and lack of screen space. HNY wont have that problem and it can still keep grossing on the lower side for 2 more weeks as unlike a Bang bang this does seem to have some patronage , though on the lower end. The reason I say that for a movie to do 9 crores on Day 7 (producer numbers of HNY) after all that downward spiral is not a bad number per se.

          Like

        • fair enough but then to live upto even this lowered standard the film should keep trending like CE. In other words it should get to 225 or so by the higher totals and 205 or so on BOI. Because if it ends up at 180 that patronage would really have been a very small slice.

        • Master, by that regard the opening day was a national holiday it was post Diwali day. They instead could have gone on Diwali day and then the BOI commentary would have pre eid style support. I thought based on the 45 crore opening day it would go on for Dhoom3 total but the cracks where from sunday which didnt hit another 45 crore..In case D3 it was all 3 first days above 30 crore. So there lies the difference. I enjoyed HNY but now i feel it was above average film that will gross what it deserves to and nothing more. Goes to show Salman has a bigger fan following that can take Kick past 200 despite an okay first 4 days.

Therein lies the Difference. ‘One’ can expect anything .. even 500 crores. Opening next day after Diwali was always expected big but that doesn’t make the film outgross Dhoom 3 total. Totally different. Crossing Dhoom 3 should be discussed or is possible only when the film is being liked is substaining. Opening day records are different sort of records then ‘Final total’. The only reasonable expectation after any film’s opening day record is first weekend record and first week record, not directly final total record.

  16. It’s already over 20cr behind Kick by the end of its first week. And the trending is quite poor, compared to Kick’s. I guess it will fall short by 35-40cr in the end i.e. somewhere between 175-180cr lifetime range. Only a huge pick-up this week end may help it go beyond these figures. If the downward slide continues, Krish 3 lifetime figures will be the benchmark.

Roar – Tigers Of The Sundarbans and Super Nani both opened to a dull response with Raor having better collections in Maharashtra, CP Berar and Eastern markets while Super Nani was better at metro multiplexes. Roar – Tigers Of the Sundarbans should have the better first day collections due to collections in small centres.

Happy New Year will easily lead and have a good second weekend total and although there will be a big drop from its first weekend it is more to do with weekend being a holiday weekend, the second weekend in terms of collections will be good..

Fireflies is a total washout while Main Shahrukh Banna Chahata Hoon release in Mumbai circuit only and Jaanwar the 1999 Akshay Kumar starrer which was a hit in the Hindi belt was re-releases in Mumbai and Delhi/UP circuits but will hardly add anything to its 10.65 crore nett collections in when first released in 1999.

  18. Happy New Year Week One – Worldwide First Figures
    Friday 31 October 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Happy New Year has grossed 245 crore worldwide which is the fourth highest total ever behind Dhoom 3, Kick and Chennai Express. Dhoom 3 had grossed 333 crore and is way ahead of the pack while the other three are in 245-250 crore range.

The film has put up fantastic first week numbers at home and abroad though there was a fall in collections in various markets of India and overseas after the weekend. The film will comfortable cross the 300 crore mark in its entire run

This will make it only the sixth film in history to go over 300 crore worldwide. The other five being Dhoom 3, 3 Idiots, Chennai Express, Kick and Ek Tha Tiger.

  19. To make a point here (and I’m not sniggering but saying this for some of the rather silly folks who made absurd claims earlier) Bang Bang has ended up 120 crores or so behind D3 in India, let alone getting to 300. K3 was 80-100 behind D3 and HNY might end up in the same range. No other big grosser is within even 50 crores of D3 (even if you take producer totals these are then higher for D3 as well though admittedly the gap on CE for instance is much greater… I won’t get into K3 since I’m not in the mood for a joke right now..).

Ergo.. two things.. d3 still did very for a week or more, specially during the weekdays (as Jay has pointed out in detail). In the later stages it definitely didn’t trend like the first two Dhooms but it didn’t completely fizzle out either. And here I’d say that it was ultimately a narrative-driven deal. It didn’t work for everyone but it was a ‘sincere’ effort in this sense and not just a collection of stunts/dances or whatever. You need the right kind of film in more ways than one to generate the biggest numbers but for any sort of trending you still need a ‘proper’ film and not an extended ad campaign.

Finally one for Apex.. would have been nice if Hrithik had helped himself out on Krrish and Bang Bang as opposed to Aamir on D3 (as in your ALice in Wonderland version)!

He should have gone with the actual totals and his movies have done well still just not upto the mark to Challange the Khans. He needs big opening and a better trend on weekdays to get a 200 crore grosser.

  21. Dhoom 3 – But I will also say that one should not forget the Dhoom 3 is a franchise and/or sequel movie. Hence it should not be directly compared to HNY or K3 or BB.

It’s always easier for such a movie to start and sustain. It’s tried and tested.

    • K3 is exactly like Dhoom. The second sequel of a successful franchise and one where both previous films were big grossers. Yes Dhoom is still the biggest franchise but K3 should have done way more than it did looking at just the past history of the franchise.

HNY isn’t but once it opens bigger than D3 then the comparison is a fair one. On BB doing less than Singham returns was I don’t think anyone’s idea of an ideal gross here. In any case I’ve been responding to some of the craziness of fans in that comment.

        • To be honest you could find some good films every year if you decided to be very selective about it. My problem here is somewhat different. The films that are truly ‘Indian’ for me or those that represent a mix that I couldn’t get anywhere else in the world (it doesn’t have to be masala) are mostly not good (or worse!) while the ones that are belong to a larger, global archive of cinema and therefore these subjects I could in any case access elsewhere. Put differently a certain film festival subject and treatment doesn’t interest me just because it’s made in an Indian language. On this point it’s not only about India. Plenty of films globally also fall in this category of the ‘banal’. They’re technically proficient, they represent serious subjects but the result is nonetheless formulaic in that same film festival sense of the term. Again I don’t insist on masala. But contemporary Tamil cinema offers much better examples of how there might be a rooted Indian tradition that is for all this keeping up with global cinematic trends. A lot of times I insist on 70s cinema. This is for reasons of personal taste and larger ideological ones as well. But I don’t have a problem with older decades or other kinds of equally rooted Indian cinema. The 80s were a pretty bad decade in Hindi cinema (not Indian cinema) but if I could do a top 10 or 20 I’d easily take this over a top 10 from the 90s.

          In the city of Sylvia

This French/ Spanish mood-piece with quiet naturalism and minimal dialogue made me ‘pick up the pen’. At the outset this is not for those who go to the cinema to “watch a story unfold” (sic!) [for them comics or fictional novels should suffice]. I’m fed up of the use of “voyeurism” or “people watchers” to describe this power of cinema to capture the nascent & evanescent.

The director Guerin (like me) seems fascinated by the interplay of destiny vs chance on one hand and controlled scripted settings versus coincidence on celluloid (& in life). And one of my favorite The “accident vs metaphor” tropes.

This follows the (real time) pursuit quest of an unnamed guy (HE) played by Xavier Lafitte through the picturesque streets of Strasbourgh, following Pilar López (SHE) who HE thinks (or hopes) is his long-lost “Sylvia” whom he had met a few years ago in a bar. What he does initially borders on appearing ‘stalkerish’ and maybe a pointer to the “male gaze” arguments but there’s none of the accompanying creepiness or perverse intention.

The timeless medieval European feel of Strasbourgh and the directors dreamy camera movement & leisurely pace adds to the mood piece. Traditional narratives are sacrificed and with an overlay of everyday sounds and sights. The use of documentary filming technniques and reality comes through different languages, graffiti, people passing, trams, bicycles, pigeons, and so on.

There are influences of Hitchcocks ‘Vertigo’ amongst others (but I didn’t care about all that). In one exquisite sequence the guys sketchpad’s pages are turned, caressed by wind and fly by like pages from his memory.

The memory of the distant, unreachable & unattainable woman has haunted many artists and musicians (& film reviewers). But is Sylvia a memory, a ghost or a delusion? She is both “everywhere and nowhere” — or perhaps doesn’t exist…

In a rare display of political correctness and basic humanity, Bollywood actually stands up to racial stereotypes.

When Abhishek Bachchan’s character Nandu Bhide refers to the defending champions — the North Korean team — as Chinese and goes on to list the whole menu of a Chindian restaurant in their honour, Charlie (Shah Rukh Khan) stops him and tells him how offensive he’s being.

We’ve seen Chak De! India, another SRK film, stand up to racism before and it’s nice to see it repeated.

Now I wouldn’t go as far as singing praises, since both Khan and Padukone endorse skin lightening products, but it would be nice if more films began to practice the same kind of sensitivity.

  25. Bollywood for all its genius has only one Salman Khan
    October 30, 2014 13:00 IST

‘His is a naive genius which eludes the sophisticated. He is natural, lazy, effortless.”He is no match for other stars. His acting is poor, his dancing is worse. Yet Salman as Salman is miles ahead of them….’ says Shiv Visvanathan.

    ====

Every time I watch Salman Khan I am puzzled and intrigued and fascinated. I am not a great fan of his, but I watch him regularly because I know that almost everyone does. He is a strange combination of the obvious and elusive.

He is the plain Khan next door and yet his simplicity is not simple. When he dances, he is stiff and yet when he moves, the crowd seems to move with him.

He denotes the ultimate accessibility. His is a naive genius which eludes the sophisticated. He is natural, lazy, effortless. If you consider him analytically, he is no match for other stars. His acting is poor, his dancing is worse.

Yet Salman as Salman is miles ahead of them. He is a man close to the archetype of himself, an original because he mimics the ordinariness of his self. He invites you on stage, smiles at his own success, suggests it could have happened to you.
His is the ultimate democracy, a sense that the dream is possible for anyone and everyone.

It is a six pack notion of film and democracy, exuberant in its expectation of life, yet modest about itself. Success seems to surprise him. He is stiff as a board, he mimics himself, quotes himself to say ‘therefore I am’ and yet there is no sense of envy and distance in the crowd. He is the collective incarnation of all of them, therefore ‘Our Salman.’

He brings to naivete the whimsy that Raj Kapoor brought to romance. He is the eventual crowd pleaser who senses the magic of the crowd as he stands before them. He is the ultimate natural in the age of the information revolution where method, technique, heuristic is all, a fact of nature in the age of the artifact.
Salman just is. He is alive to his mistakes, his edginess and seems to enjoy the fact he is an improbable miracle with so many defects and yet his very incompleteness, adds to the sense of the perennial.

The other stars have to add bits of the new to sustain interest, but he remains himself like the seasons. I cannot think of a man who acts badly, dances stiffly, behaves gawkily and yet has the genius of feeling at home in the world.

In a way, it is his mistakes that make him, not his achievements. The black buck episode, the shortened relationships with women add to his mystique. He seems artfully helpless and yet so charmingly able.

He wants to show that there is no mystique to the magic of Salman Khan. He enters almost absent mindedly and grows and feeds on the sense of the crowd. They respond to his every move, participate in a magical sense of the crowd. The rest like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir are distant; they capture the horizon while he domesticates the neighbourhood.

When I watch Bigg Boss, I realise it is eventless without him. He is the adrenalin charge to everydayness of being and yet his judgments of character are shrewd. He is the almost idiot who has a sense of the opportunistic. The audience treatsBigg Boss like a five-day match; in fact a hundred day one and feels Salman makes it a T-20 show.

Salman does not grow, he unfolds giving more of himself, showing there is so much more to give exemplifying the generosity of the star to a fan. He feeds on them and in turn feeds them with every possibility. When he enters, he sucks in the crowds. They want him to be just Salman and he does that effortlessly.

They wait for his comments and it seems to amplify everything they wanted to say over the week. The long wait is worth every minute as Salman cannot disappoint. He is the closest to the star as reflecting the general will. As result, none of his role can be great. They have to be memorable because they are basically a memorial, a mnemonics of his own self. As he belts out favourite lines from his movies, he recreates himself.

Salman has to be Salman to remain perpetually Salman. When a man can only be more of himself. He has arrived in a way no other star has arrived. He does not have to improve, improvise, surprise. He can be all that by being himself. All he has to do is to elude a bit of himself to feed the hysteria of expectation.

One must be comparative and watch the trajectory of three stars who made it big. Aamir Khan grew intellectually with each film. He was methodological, reflective, he researched roles like Lagaan and Three Idiots. He is one of our better known social analysts thanks to Satyamev Jayate, who thinks every step out.
Shah Rukh Khan is a shrewd professional, can combine villainy and heroism. He too needs constant reinvention to survive. He is a self reflective about Bollywood and realises he is one of its myths.
Salman shows no such intellectualism. He merely succeeds, eluding the critics at every step. They realise his popularity and populism transcends their critical reviews.

Shah Rukh ages, Aamir matures, but Salman does not grow. He gets more nuanced as his own archetype.

Salman’s stage life reverses Shakespeare’s seven ages of man in an odd way. In Shakespeare, the seven ages of man are played out separately. Amitabh can play them seriously, but Salman captures all ages in every age. He is a teenager at 50, a wise child at 20. He telescopes time to appeal to all ages.

He has the tentativeness of the younger brother, the authority of an older one. He is a modern, yet combines old fashioned values. He is a continuous presence not a collection of events like the rest. He is being confronting doing, and yet the paradigmatic action hero, wolf boy perpetually playing Boy Scout.

Yet his charm lies in the fact that even he seems to play spectator to his own event claiming that this is me but not quite the me I want to be. He never quite seems to settle into anything and yet seems content with himself.

He is difficult to label except as Salman and that sums it up. A star born to be himself. As a self, he is different, gawky and as a role he is Bollywood genius summoning mimicry from his audience. He projects that small touch of the ineffable, the little dabs of the human that make him a star.

Bollywood for all its genius has only one Salman Khan. It is time to celebrate him.

On screen with a good script like ‘Wanted’ he is untouchable and just wish something of that nature could release in this phase of his career and it would break past 350 cr barrier in no time with the repeat value it had. By Part 3, the public might have tired of it , is also a possibility. Dabang 2 was not a particularly bad film, but how much more did it do over Dabang? Don2 over Don? Murder 3 over Murder 2? Happy New Year took the all time best ever opening for a Hindi film in Germany as it grossed $94,000 on its first day of release. Dhoom 3 had grossed $86,000 over the weekend and My Name Is Khan was $98,000 over the weekend. These were the biggest openers in Germany prior to Happy New Year and their figures have beaten by distances with day one figures of Happy New Year matching weekend figures of Dhoom 3 and My Name Is Khan.

The film should clock up $300,000 plus weekend total and be in top ten chart in Germany this weekend. The $300k plus figure is a huge number in this market as Hindi films hardly have a market in Germany as NRI’s are few in numbers. The all time record in Germany is $500,000 by My Name Is Khan

The fact that Happy New Year featured Shahrukh Khan is the reason of this opening and he has a following amongst the locals. The film is doing well in all overseas markets and will easily be the highest grossing film of 2014 and most likely the fifth highest ever.

Happy New Year had good collections on Friday of around 4.50 crore nett. Although the drop from day one is big but that was a big holiday. The drop from Thursday is just 25% and big budget releases tend to se bigger jumps from day seven to day eight. .

The film will show good growth on Saturday and Sunday and the weekend should go towards the 18-19 crore nett range which would mean the second highest second weekend of the year after Kick. The fact that the new releases are unlikely to grow much may even help to push it towards a 20 crore nett second weekend.

The holiday season has finished and film has settled and it has put up better numbers at multiplexes than single screens. Mumbai circuit leads the way as far as best performance.

  35. HNY another TMK: Farah Khan has now given back to back laughers
Normalizing the boxoffice both movies have similar collections and trending with a megamoth first day followed by public realization of crap. There is no repeat viewing of this movie in fact even a single viewing is painstaking. The story line of both movies have lot of similarities. TMK was based on a train robbery on the pretense of movie competetion while HNY is based on robbery based on pretense of Dance Competition however Farah dropped the ball on both. She should have inspired herself with revenge heist saga Aankhen or Kaante
btw HR last year Diwali release blows away HNY both in entertainment value and boxoffice inspite of having a more challenging release date.

After Bollywood, even Hollywood praises Abhishek Bachchan’s Happy New Year performance!
Junior Bachchan has been garnering a lot of praise from people for his performance in the Diwali blockbuster release…

The Hollywood Reporter, a one-stop-shop for movies, fashion, television and technology has acted as a holy grail when it comes to film reviews over the years. The portal which recently reviewed blockbuster Happy New Year didn’t hold back on their praise towards Abhishek Bachchan’s performance in the film.

Says the Hollywood Reporter, “Abhishek Bachchan leaves a lasting impression – the son of screen king Amitabh Bachchan is developing a reputation as a gifted comic (Bol Bachchan) and he shines here as a drunk, unfocused loser who has to impersonate the brutish scion to a diamond empire, complete with a pink velvet blazer, a sculpted pencil-thin beard and a vulgar American accent.”

Abhishek Bachchan is currently on a roll , with the stupendous success of his last film Dhoom 3, followed by his championship win at the Pro-Kabaddi League , the actor now has another reason to celebrate as his recent blockbuster, Happy New Year created a landmark in box office history. What’s more, is that the actor has been touted as the one to watch out for in the masala entertainer, with the audiences and critics alike lauding him as the “show stealer”.

  38. Bombay Velvet To Be Re-shot?
by Soumita Sengupta (November 1, 2014)

Everyone knows that Anurag Kashyap, whose big-budget film Bombay Velvet was to hit cinemas this year, postponed the release of his film. Reason: the film needed plenty of VFX and re-editing and didn’t turn out the way the makers and the actors had imagined it. The new deadline is May 2015. Although the makers had claimed that the only element left to shoot were a few songs, a source close to the director reveals, “Not only a few songs, but also some part of the film needs to be re-shot and they will do that early next year when they get Ranbir’s dates. The VFX is underway in India but Kashyap is abroad, where he is writing his first International film.”

PS: Anurag Kashyap’s other film titled Ugly is also awaiting release.

The approx collections for the second Friday and Saturday are are as follows.

    Friday – 4,25,00,000
    Saturday – 6,75,00,000

Happy New has grossed 11 crore nett in two days of its second weekend and has stabilised well after the falls in the weekdays of the first week..

    Like

  41. lol, 6,75 Cr is considered huge growth??…with HNY it is very clear that Shahrukh is a distant third in the Khan pecking order

    Like

    • well in fairness it’s significant going from 4.5 crores to 6.75. In % terms. But of course it’s still deceptive commentary because this ‘stabilization’ is occurring at a very low level. For example CE 5.5 crores (BOI) on its second Fri and this despite the audience being maximized on two important holidays earlier and also the fact that OUATIM 2 released on its (CE’s) 8th day. Then it had 7.5 (again BOI) on Sat. So it was operating a higher level throughout.

But the other problem here is that this is the narrative on most big films, even ones that are much more stable than HNY. So you have huge number in week 1 but then things slow down to a trickle over the second weekend and these numbers are then celebrated to the point of absurdity. So you can have 3 crores on the second Fri and go up a crore or two Sat and it will be called a huge jump. which it is only as a technical matter.

And we don’t have to look too far. Again just using the BOI numbers YJHD had 6.75 on its 8th day and 9.5 on its second Sat. This despite YPD2 also releasing that weekend. So by today’s standards these were rather good second weekend numbers.

      Like

      • D3 of course went something like 10, 11, 17 over the weekend. These numbers are pretty poor and it’s looking at 30crore second week or thereabouts with no competition.

        • The producer number for Friday is 5.4 crs and for Saturday is not yet out. Considering Gurgaon jumped from 7 lacs to 18 lacs i would think it will be around 8 crores…Sunday can be 10 crores…2 part holidays this week can take it to 40 crores for second week with producer numbers…BOI will be around 32-33 crores…This will go past 200 crs surely by producer numbers now…A disappointment in terms of opening day but will be a trade HIT..

          Like

        • Wow, you must have invested money in the film. You desperately want it to cross 200 crores or whatever ridiculous number the tradewallahs fancy. If you haven’t invested any money in the film, well…that’s a different story, and that too will not make good reading!

          Like

        • yes but by those same producer numbers CE was at 225. And it wasn’t as if CE was the greatest trending film imaginable. So it’s not some very high bar. As for it being a trade hit at 200. I don’t buy that to be honest. Firstly if the numbers are questionable one can’t use them as the standard but even forgetting this debate the idea that these huge films are clean hits the moment they touch certain numbers is absurd. And I’ll again say here what I’ve been saying for years. Somehow the smaller films find it much harder to get to that same hit status! The gap between what is called a hit for a smaller or medium range film and the same for a large blockbuster type is not that great. Then the trade and/or box office sites use all kind of technicalities to justify this rating. Now these numbers (how much the film was sold for where and so on) are also not verifiable. So really another set of unverifiable numbers is brought up to justify the first unverifiable set. And so on! But even otherwise it doesn’t make sense. I won’t even bring up Hollywood or something here or how things are called hits or otherwise in any industry where the numbers are verifiable. The fact is 100 crores or 200 crores is just a label with no greater mathematical truth behind it. However in a media sense you can run with this narrative whereby 200 just gives the film in question a certain respectability. At least till it becomes all too common. Clearly clearing a 100 did not save Ra One or Jai Ho! Even though the attempt was certainly made even here (moreso with ra One). And then of course the standards keep changing at both ends of the equation. So celebrate it on opening day because it’s so much ahead of D3. By the end it falls behind by 70 crores or whatever and then the argument is ‘hey it at least did 200’ and so on.

And this isn’t against you but the problem with claims like ‘it’s a trade hit’ is: how does one know? Where are the numbers that verify this math? Just the producer saying it isn’t enough. Nor folks like Taran or Nahta or BOI or whoever. Of course we know what everyone says or has already said but there’s no reason for us to endorse these claims unless we really know things. If I might be a bit brutally honest here I think you’ve been far too kind on this film throughout. It’s hard to call it a flop given the existing standards and I’m not suggesting that here. But it’s a very disappointing trend and graph after day 1. Don’t think there’s any way to avoid this truth. What the trade calls it (assuming they actually say this.. what’s the verification for this barring the claims of folks like Nahta and others..) should be irrelevant. And my overall point once again is that we shouldn’t be so devoted to these things that we don’t look at the obvious truth. When BOI says (and you say you follow them) it’s shown a huge jump on day 2 that’s a completely deceptive claim. Sure all producer numbers tend to be higher but the K3 ones were absurd. Even accepting the dishonesty and/or unverifiability of the overall claims there are still certain things that seem more reasonable than others.

        • Seriously, How i wish i had that kind of money!!.
Expectations wise the movie is surely a disappointment. But pure economics wise, it can still be a hit without satisfying any expectations..

          Like

        • I’d disagree. that can only happen if you’re expecting 300 from a film, it does 250 which on its own might be very good. The bar for this kind of scenario though is rather high. D3 clearly lived upto it. I am willing to accept that HNY might be profitable for many at its gross. But calling it a ‘hit’ is going too far. Because what we’re saying is unless a film is an utter disaster or total tank it is some kind of hit. Why? Because even a film that has not been liked very much will still put up big numbers because of the opening. It just doesn’t stand to reason. And if it were possible to structure the economics of a film this way where everything short of a tank could be a hit don’t you think they would have figured this out in Hollywood?! And again where are the numbers here? How do we know?

Dhoom 3 is also a bad film…not atrociously bad as HNY but bad nonetheless. It does have some redeeming features in the form of the Sahil-Samar sibling rivalry but otherwise it’s forgettable trash.

          Like

        • I’d disagree here. I think I can certainly understand many people not liking D3 but I find it impossible to understand how one could put it in the HNY category (as a film, not referring to the box office here). If anything D3 had the opposite problem of many of these films. It had too much ‘story’ for that sort of franchise! It’s fair to say the ‘marriage’ doesn’t quite work or that it should have stayed at the eye candy level of both earlier films but that’s a different kind of claim. If anything it’s a whole masala track (the story with the father, the double, the love triangle, the cop befriending one of them, the betrayals et al) operating inside a by-the-numbers genre. So I think saying this is like HNY is just descriptively wrong. One otherwise has a right to dislike each film on its own terms.

        • Jaju takes the CI numbers and multiplies it by 25 to get the overall numbers…He gets the CI numbers from Aditya Choksey who is the distributor there….The CI number for Saturday was 21.25 lacs. ..You cannot take a small territory like CI and extrapolate it for the whole of India.

BOI is always the closest to the actual numbers IMO…They have their own contacts with distributors and get the numbers and dont rely on producer numbers. But even they cannot be 100% accurate. But for now thats the best we have…

          Like

        • Yes, I’m aware of how he works out his numbers.

His methodology isn’t completely flawed. He has given many examples where this CI number multiplied by 25, actually comes close to the final figure.

He also has pointed out that final figures could go as high as 30x the CI figure, but that’s a very rare thing…it usually happens when a film is totally multiplex-centric, which is hardly the case with HNY.

On BOI, their numbers might be more close to reality but their commentary is completely bogus with a capital B!

          Like

        • Jaju will have an issue with every film strong in metros and not in small centres. HNY has done almost close to 50 crores in Mumbai territory and no wonder Jajus numbers are totally off…On the other hand he thinks Krish3 did 250 crores and not 180 crores. The reason is the reverse. Krish3 did very good in mass centres and CI in particular but not everywhere else…

          Like

        • Jaju’s numbers on HNY aren’t totally off! His numbers are only a few crores lower than BOI’s. His first week number is roughly 129 crores compared to 134 on BOI.

His numbers on Krish3 are a different story. But we aren’t talking about it here.

I’m not suggesting for a second that Prakash Jaju is a paragon of honesty and virtue, just that there are people other than BOI who know what’s cooked up and what’s not!

And by that I mean the Producer’s numbers, which if you happen to believe for HNY, you should have no objections for K3 either!

          Like

        • ..I do not have a problem with producers quoting a higher number than BOI as long as in a reasonable range…But I always go by BOI numbers..

          Like

        • Again how do we ‘know’ this? I find it quite odd that every few years someone comes up who has absolute faith in BOI numbers, who also says ‘they get their numbers from distributors’ (I’ve heard this exact claim before), and so on. But there is still nothing verifiable. Secondly it’s a bit hard to buy that the numbers are otherwise not verifiable but somehow all these distributors all over India give these numbers to BOI! You just said ‘they’re closest to the numbers’. How do you know? What’s the standard here?

These might seem like tough questions but my point (and it’s been a constant one for years) is that you just cannot accept things at face value. The whole thing reads like a fairy tale and the best sort of claim anyone has is ‘trust us’! With BOI especially when the commentary is often so biased, when the centers selected are often so blatantly done to advance a certain narrative, so on and so forth, can one just trust things they say on the numbers?

          Like

        • Satyam, There are only 2 types of numbers these days…BOI numbers and producer numbers. One can go with either one of the two or average of the two. In case of HNY the difference between BOI and producer numbers (hindi Version) is hardly 10 – 12 crores which is par for the course. (First week of BOI was 135 crs and producer was around 147 crores, all version 157 crores) With BOI over time I have find their numbers closest to film trade magazine so I go with them. But I have no issue if people go with producer numbers. Kkrish 3 was an exception here not the norm. Producers are usually around 10% ahead of BOI which is not something I will worry about.

          Like

        • but this still doesn’t answer all the questions I’ve raised. If there are two sets of unverified, suspect numbers (for similar or different reasons) one can’t average them out or say the difference isn’t huge or whatever. I don’t wish to choose in these circumstances. Now I know this is all we have. But that doesn’t mean we are forced to accept one or the other or somehow find a midway point between the two. And this again gets to the questions I raised. it’s one thing to speak from a position of deep skepticism on these matters and then arrive at the conclusion that a film might have done x or y as an educated guess and quite another to proclaim one side to be the gospel truth. Because such a claim cannot be sincerely made without providing information as to what constitutes the basis of such certainty.

And despite my own reservations, there’s no dearth of good films coming out of Bollywood. One would have to look elsewhere…films with smaller budgets would be a good place to start, but they do exist!

Here’s a radical (!) thought: how about people remain true to the intrinsic merits of a film and not the stars/actors who are just a small part of it?

This whole exercise of evaluating a film through numbers is utterly absurd. Even if a film is a big hit, it doesn’t mean it should impact your own individual view. The herd mentality of following box office parameters leaves no room for individuality. I repeat, individuality!

Does it make any difference if you happen to like a film that’s not loved by the masses?

Does it empower you to be part of a crowd that loves mindless, trashy films?

    • It’s certainly true that in Bollywood it’s always very hard to argue for films that fail and vice versa. This cult of the audience and so on is constantly perpetrated. But of course this doesn’t mean anything. yes a ‘majority’ liked a certain film and disliked another. So what?! And the other point that I always make here is that if one made a list of great or greatest films of movie history (and globally) you’d come up with a larger number (specially in Hollywood and elsewhere) which were either initial flops and/or initial critical failures. The only reason this number is lower in India is because of the absence of a proper critical culture a high profile filmmaker like Guru Dutt can be reinvented but more obscure important films are not very likely to be.

Even if these numbers are true, they only serve to inflate the egos of the so-called superstars, nothing more. The ‘fans’ are happy that their ‘superstar’ won the box office sweepstakes. Just to help it sink in, how pathetic is that!?

OSO also did the same a year earlier and the initial was bigger (in the same range but it meant more for certain reasons). CE by today’s standards did quite well (most films don’t trend like this) but it was still nowhere close to doubling its week 1 (the way a few films still do..). Having said that almost all of Salman’s films trend this way or worse. Because most of it is the same category of completely disposable cinema and not very good disposable cinema at that! What saves Salman is of course the fact that he does these nothing films and keeps coming up with big initials so his standing otherwise cannot be doubted. In terms of truly important initials SRK got them on just Ra One, CE, HNY after OSO. RNBDJ, MNIK, Don2, JTHJ were all sluggish or decent initials. RNBDJ was the best all things considered but still wasn’t the sort of flying start that was otherwise the history of SRK in this genre and certainly with Yashraj. But this also gets to my larger point in the longer post I put up on SRK recently. He’s mismanaged his career a great deal over the last ten years.

        • Re: “…the singer is muslim who also sings Meera and Krishna Bhajan…”

This is so common in the long, long, tradition of classical and folk music in India (one could go back to Amir Khusrau, and any number of other medieval poets) that it isn’t very notable — it is simply a given. In the Gangetic region Sufi poetry and practice has been saturated with Krishna-ite imagery; and the Hindu bhakti movement itself was heavily influenced by Islamic practices as well. (The lyrics to a song like “Kajra Re” — e.g. the “kaali kamlee waala” is a reference to both Prophet Muhammad and Lord Krishna — sound echoes of this tradition (Bhansali paid homage to it in Saawariya as well), sadly under great pressure from the fanaticisms enabled by modernity…)

[PS — in the tradition of “high” Urdu poetry as well, any number of non-Muslim poets have written in Muslim devotional forms, like the mersiya (lament for Hussain).]

        • “the Hindu bhakti movement itself was heavily influenced by Islamic practices as well.” lol. It is other way round actually. Islam got influenced by Hinduism (in India) and sufi was outcome of it. If only Hinduism could influence all other muslim nations in similar fashion, then Islam would really be peaceful religion that it wants to be. On the muslim singer: many of these were forcefully converted generations ago and were hindus once. I know many muslim families who have Lord Krishna from their grandparents in their house.

This is a completely unnecessary comment, Di. Perhaps the Buddhists could influence the Hindus to be more peaceful and oblivious to casteism etc

And perhaps, one day, we’d all give up our indoctrinated beliefs and become followers of science and rational thinking!

Actually the sanatan dharma is 100% scientific, not belief based and modern science is discovering now what was already stated/understood by rishis. But lets not argue on science. I do genuinely believe that sufi (peaceful) philosophy could come out of mixing with Hinduism then maybe similar greater good could flower elsewhere too (either via Hinduism or Buddhism, I don’t really care) however maybe there is more economics than religion and science involved.

        • Though it’s pointless to say this again and again where you’re concerned since you’re wrong 100% of the time, and on the facts, and between your confident ignorance on one side and bigotry on the other it’s a real devil’s choice but nonetheless I shall be repetitive here and say that it is precisely dangerous certainty like yours that is the problem. It’s not even amusing to note this (given the horrifying history behind such attitudes) but still one wishes you’d turn to others of your ilk in different nations and religions and see how they’re as convinced of the very same things but from their side. It’s not even that they say different things. They say precisely the same things. It’s like a formula where you could fit in the Islamist, the Christian brigade of a certain sort, the Hindutva-type (this is your group of course), on and on and on… and similarly from the fascist hijacking of nationalism from the Germans to the Japanese to various South American nations to contemporary India (again one could go on and on and on).. the formula is the same, you just have to change the names. These claims of being ‘ancient and pure’, these ideas of having been around forever (as a culture or religion or both), this sense of being the greatest nation. There are scores of such examples since the past century.

Now I apologize for introducing logic here but if so many make exactly the same set of claims they can’t all be right! So either the Americans are right when they claim they are the greatest nation in history and have the greatest set of values or the Indians are when they do the same. Both can’t be right at the same time! If fundamentalist Muslims claim that their faith is utterly scientific or that science is only confirming what their faith gave them long ago and if Christian fundamentalists say the very same and if Hindu fundamentalists also say the same again they cannot all be right. And by the way they all claim they’ve been there since the very beginning of time and the first human!

These frog ponds are all great fun for the believers who occupy any one pond but they tend to have rather dangerous consequences otherwise. Why? Because those frogs sometimes get out of their ponds and then start directing all their hatred at frogs from other ponds and vice versa. They forget, not surprisingly, that all those frog ponds belong to the same earth! And if you switched some of the frogs around at birth you’d get the very same frogs arguing exactly the same things for other labels!

It’s not to late to learn a few things in life.

        • Sufism has been an enormously influential force in India. At the same time what scholars call ‘Indo-Islam’ is obviously a brand of Islam that developed in India with various strands of Hindu thought and belief and practice feeding into it. The traffic often runs both ways in such contexts. In other words both faiths influence each other. The question is what ‘area’ one is looking at. It could be moving more in one direction or the other depending on this. Sufism of course is not limited to India in any sense. Later on the same Islamic and Hindu currents also fed into Sikhism. So on and so forth. The point is that if one just follows the facts and gets away from an agenda one can learn things. But we don’t always learn the things that we set out to learn. History unfortunately is not very comforting for anyone with any kind of agenda. And when I say ‘agenda’ here I mean a set of political or religious or nationalistic views that are premised on a mythologized version of events which not surprisingly don’t stand up to scholarly scrutiny. I am not responding either way to what Qalandar said because I find it unexceptionable. And you’re restating the same thing differently. If there is overlap there is clearly traffic flowing from one direction to the other or both ways (assuming there isn’t a third common source which isn’t the case here). If one insists on Hindu or Muslim priority either way or reads responses such as Qalandar’s as picking sides then it becomes an issue. There can of course often be a debate on the facts as long as certain rules of the road are accepted. The British stayed in India for a very long time. One might not like this idea. That’s fine. But what is incontrovertible is that India changes forever because of that rule. There is no question anymore of somehow becoming Indian in a ‘pre-British’ way. That way is always foreclosed once such events happen. Why? Because every ‘idea of India’ is reconfigured by that British event. The Indian state, the constitution, the principles behind it, all wouldn’t be possible without the British and the notion of a Westminster style democracy. The same goes for the understanding of history or language or culture or what have you. Which doesn’t mean one cannot offer correctives. This is always the case. But one has to do so also in an objective spirit and with some scholarly rules of the road. One cannot battle one agenda with another. And even after one has corrected for certain things the ‘framing’ remains ‘British’. Much as, and I always point this out, the entire Hindutva narrative on India is simply not understandable without accounting for British and Western notions of history and religion and so on. One could make similar arguments for Muslim rule in India. It’s not just about India. This argument could be applied in every context. there are right wingers in Europe or the US who wish to go back to some imaginary state when there were no immigrants. But that’s never going to happen. Nor are those older systems retrievable. Even if one could one would find that the same conflicts also existed further back. So yes once it was a mostly white affair. On the other hand every new immigrant group to the US was treated with violence (irish or europeans or whoever, the whole melting pot idea is a myth, that’s not how things began.. it’ the ‘greatest country’ if you believe everyone but founded more or less on slavery and genocide), in Europe you had severe class distinctions, one could go on. One can get comfortable with mythology, not history. However if one tries to substitute one with the other the results are dangerous.

The problem is precisely this: whatever we learn growing up, whatever we start believing this way, unfortunately most of it ha s very little to do with the way things actually are. It is always a mythologized account of community or nation or family or what have you. Not surprisingly people don’t wish to break away from this because they feel they’ll lose their identity this way. But again, and as in that response to Di, if everyone makes the very same claims everyone cannot possibly be right at the same time! There’s a great deal to be celebrated in all sorts of cultures and nations and so on.. as long as one is willing to get away from this claustrophobic view of things which insists on limiting the richness of life. And we can keep attacking others or scholars or whatever.. but what we’re really afraid of is this other version that destabilizes everything we’re invested in. And this isn’t just about choosing this or that scholar. There is an ethics in these matters, there are codes, protocols, there are ways of doing things. Otherwise it’s just a pond, the world moves on and sooner or later people or nations that are out of touch with reality have to undergo some sort of historical correction.

finally all these labels change over time. ‘Indian’, ‘Muslim’, Hindu’, ‘British’ etc.. no matter what label you pick it often had very different meanings depend on when and where one lived. To assume therefore that there’s this common name which remains static and frozen across time is itself dangerous.

        • Actually I don’t say that at all and I think you know this. Let me offer a ‘neutral’ example here as to how I approach these things. Before that I’ll just say that it’s too easy to attack everyone you don’t like as a ‘commie’. Everyone from Harvard historians to Ram Guha fall into this category. Somehow these are scholars recognized the world over but of course this too confirms the vast global conspiracy against Hindus. I’ll just repeat what I said earlier. Lots of people in other such situations say the same things. So there’s a global conspiracy against Islam and Hinduism and India and the Arabs and what not. These are just cheap ways to avoid the debate, not engage it. For example I could say that anyone who doesn’t agree with something I say on any issue is a fascist historian! Or a Republican or whatever name I liked. But to get back to my example. If you asked me what the greatest (most durable) culture in human recorded history has been (so far) I’d say it’s the ancient Egyptians. Nothing else is even close! Now Muslims could say they’ve been around since Adam, Hindus could say they’ve been there since the beginning of time but this is mythological history. Every culture engages in it. You’re arguing about Indian history constantly, you’re adopting Hindutva planks and so the mythology has to be pointed out in this case. If someone talked about chinese history in the same way (as many do in china) the same would have to be pointed out there too. I constantly refer to Muslims in this context anyway. Now when I make the ancient Egypt point Muslims might object and come up with claims of their own. That’s unfortunately more mythology. One can believe anything one likes but if one wants to put it forward as a coherent, logical position one will be questioned on it. The response then cannot be: oh you’re a commie! And if it’s only about belief what about the beliefs of everyone else? We’re back at square one. They too feel they have the best cultures, the best nations, the best religions, the best values. Who’s right here? If I’m an alien who arrives from another galaxy and I see Chinese and Indians and Americans and Japanese and Muslims and Hindus etc etc making the very same claims how do I know which claims are the right ones (if any)? And again what always amazes me about such certitude is the utter lack of irony that is involved. If Di were born Muslim or Christian or Buddhist or German or whatever she’d say the very same things. An accident of birth makes one so certain about everything one has been taught to believe! Where I do agree with you is that it is pointless for her to say anything to me because she doesn’t know what she’s talking about 100% of the time. And I’m not exaggerating. People who don’t know anything and refuse to recognize this, there’s not much one can do about them. Let me end with the Egyptian history example again. So much is not known about what happened 5000 years ago there or 4000 years ago or whatever. But there is a scholarly surmise based on real knowledge and understanding and then there could be my claim where I might say ‘this is what happened 3000 years ago.. I can’t prove it but you can’t either.. and by the way you have an agenda’! Haven’t you come across enough SRK fans who felt Bachchan wasn’t that big at all and that his achievements were exaggerated and would make all kinds of absurd arguments in support. well if you argued they’d say ‘you have a pro-Bachchan agenda’! So everyone can play this game. By the way I only say things with absolute conviction when I rely on the superior knowledge of others. Precisely because I ‘do not’ know!

Unfortunately it is just the case today that religions have to be defended from many of their most zealous followers. Nations too!

It is rare for the ‘copy’ or inspired work to be better than the original and there in lies the genius of the writer/poet. Happy New Year showed huge growth on its second Saturday and Sunday to gross around 20 crore nett in its second weekend and take its ten day total to close to 154 crore nett.

The approx collections for the second weekend are are as follows.

        Friday – 4,25,00,000
        Saturday – 6,75,00,000
        Sunday – 9,25,00,000

        TOTAL – 20,25,00,000

The growth on the second Saturday and Sunday was huge even compared to many other big grossers. It means the film has been well appreciated by the family audiences and this likely trend will be repeated in third weekend. There are holidays in certain states on Tuesday and Thursday which should give collections an extra boost in various circuits and the week could go towards 35 crore nett.

Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. Monday announced that “Happy New Year” had a strong showing at the domestic box office in its second weekend as it collected Rs.22.23 crore for a total Rs.179.80 crore so far.

“The positive trends in collections across India show that the audience have loved ‘Happy New Year’ and the families have gone to the theatres to get fully entertained,” Venky Mysore, CEO, Red Chillies Entertainment, said in a statement.

A musical heist drama directed by Farah Khan, “Happy New Year” is a multi-starrer with a cast that includes Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Jackie Shroff and Vivaan Shah.

The film became the quickest to make Rs.100 crore, said a statement.

Exhibitors are happy that the movie has found resonance with audiences of all age groups.

“The film, after completing seven-day run, became the most preferred for the families in the second weekend too. The number of Friday was bettered by Saturday, and Sunday was 40 percent better than Saturday – which only goes on to give the indication that families and people who couldn’t catch the film in the first week came to the theatres,” Anand Vishal, head (Sales and Operations), Fun Cinemas, said in a statement.

There were also audience members who came to see the film on repeat value, Vishal said, and added: “We feel that the film will stay in the forefront for the next 10 days or so.”

Anant Verma of DT Cinemas said: “The film has held well again over the weekend with 60-65 percent occupancy.”

If she never liked big commercial films( so called masala entertainers) during her time, there is no reason to like the films which are being made as tribute or pattern of the films of that era by Farah, who is huge fan and trying to recreate such films.

      • I don’t think that’s really true. Bachchan did a few films with Mukherjee after ’75 as well, he certainly had other Salim-Javed scripts. In any case and irrespective of what the truth might or might not be in this case I am quite glad she said what she did here. LOL!

        • You can check on it. Its not about doing non-commercial films after 75 or not but once Amitabh became star, Jaya didn’t like the commercial films of Amitabh. Everyone does off-beat films but its a broad statement by Jaya about not liking anything from Amitabh post ’75 once he became a star.

We all know the comment that Jaya Bachchan made about the movie ‘Happy New Year’. Jayaji termed the movie as ‘nonsensical’ and openly made her displeasure known at a film fest.

Jaya Bachchan also mentioned that she had given this sort of a review to the lead actor (SRK) of the film himself. However, news is that the HNY team including SRK, did not like their hard work being dragged in the mud. This worried Jaya Bachchan’s family members including her hubby Big B and son and DIL Abhishek and Aishwarya.

While Big B apparently messaged SRK to apologize, Abhishek and Aishwarya seemed to have rushed to Mannat, to apologize to the superstar in person. News has it that they did settle the issue with SRKès wife Gauri but could not catch up with King Khan as he was busy elsewhere.

Hope this one sorts out pretty soon! We would hate for the friendly relationship between the two families sour up.

Please don’t talk about Farah here. At the moment she seems to be quintessential hack of this assemblage – an artist, who exploits, for money, her creative ability in the production of dull, unimaginative, and trite work. She is one who produces banal and mediocre work in the hope of gaining commercial success.

She was given great bunch of actors / resources / money and this is what she comes out with…. and god knows how she crept back to srk camp. …..

200 cr or more…does not matter. The truth is the movie was not getting sold at the price srk wanted (and it turned out a correct call by these distributors) hence it was given to yrf on commission basis. The ultimate loser for all practical purposes here is SRK/ Red Chilies both in terms of monetary and perception of being associated with crap films for good 5/6 years now.

He is back to Ra1 stage of his career which was somewhat rectified by Rohit Shetty…..albeit perception wise only !

The stage is set for Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on controversial actor Sanjay Dutt. And the director admitted to Mirror on Sunday that the film may go on floors before Sanjay is released from prison.

“I have got plenty of inputs from Sanju’s family. I’ve met not only his sisters, Priya and Namrata, but also his brother-in-law Kumar Gaurav and Paresh, a close friend of his who lives in the US,” says the Munnabhai director.

The Sanju film is quite ironic given Sanju’s life and Hirani’s “kind” of film. Plus his current position is a very low one. You end a film on that note and its quite a tough story to take in.
Think Ranbir thought is the perfect fit. The eyes are a match and he can be made to look a tad like Sanju quite easily. I don’t think there is a better suited actor age wise at all.

        • Incidentally, both Hirani and Ranbir are doing the film as being close to Sanjay Dutt(emotional reason). It was mentioned Sanjay wanted only Ranbir to do his role and he coudn’t say no especially when Hirani is attached to the project. As Hirani has been meeting Sanjay Dutt for past 10 years regularly, he knows lot of incidents and he saw the potential in story says a lot. He’s the perfect ‘insider’ and not the ‘outsider’ to handle this film from Sanjay Dutt’s perspective.

How about Dhyanchand, Lala Amarnath, Dara Singh, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand et al. Seems like they only want to cash in on the currently in the news people. Very weird.
Also, one can explain Milkha, or to a certain extent Kom. But why Dhoni when you have Gavaskar, Kapil, Tendulkar.
    Dutt when you have Amitabh??

    Like

    • Bollywood is ultimate money driven. Making biopics is the latest trend and especially if the person is saleable(Mary Kom, Dhoni, Dutt, Milkha Singh).

      “Dutt when you have Amitabh??”
“But why Dhoni when you have Gavaskar, Kapil, Tendulkar.”

You are completely missing the point. It is not about ‘most’ successful person of that field. The story needs a graph and I think Dhoni’s graph lends better than Tendulkar as from rags to riches story. Dhoni – Jharkand youth, school dropout, no facilities, started playing late and was working as Train Ticket Examiner till 2003, an year before his ODI debut. From that TTE to this India’s most successful captain is nothing short of a dream decade. On the other hand, Sachin is complete dedicated person and was genius from younger age and played for 25 years, but I don’t this graph to handle his story. Even his ultimate win(World Cup 2011) will end better with Dhoni’s film than his.

Samething with Sanjay Dutt and Amitabh. Dutt has more content and ups and downs in his life. From his mom’s death 4 days before debut movie’s release in 1981 and him being completely shattered and take on drugs. And within an year, he was caught with Drugs and jailed for 5 months in Prison in 1982. Sent to US for rehabitlitation and come back and then was out of work until Mahesh Bhatt’s Naam revived his career. Then he was succesful and then got in Bombay blast case and jailed for 18 months in TADA. Then come out and again getting new lease with Vaastav and similar films and then finally India’ most loved gangster – Munnabhai. His story has everything and this is just outsider view.. not the inside details about his failed marriages and marrying a bar dancer and settling down happily.

      • Dutt was primed to be a huge star in early 90’s. Films like Saajan and Khal Nayak were a rage. I remember so many stories of alleged affairs with Madhuri.
He lost his best years in jail. He had star parents and all this against the backdrop of drugs, terrorism, jail and women. It’s a story for sure but it requires a class act to do it. Because there is controversy written all over it and the film can’t afford to take sides. An emotion based film that tracks him and his feelings rather than getting into details of what part he played and most importantly his take on that (as that is pretty controversial) would be better. Because there is a plenty of hero to zero moments to keep the viewer intrigued.

Waseem Akram was on CNWK last weekend and when asked who would be toughest batsman to bowl today and he instantly named Dhoni and then went to explain- his best deliveries used to be the yorkers in the death overs and Dhoni is a master of those deliveries. He also called Virat Kohi the chulbul pandey of cricket and kind of agree there too. Though the guy is currently having form issues but his batting is total Dabangiri on field.

Sachin etc are for the record books……

A movie on 1983 World Cup win is more important has a very good graph to tell.

As far as I know ( subject to correction ) the fascination of cricket was there in India, but after 1983 it achieved the status that lead to today.

1983 is about bunch of underdogs beating the might and the titans west indies! The image of Kapil Dev lifting the trophy has to be more inconic as India then the Dhoni. ( or Is it just may be me ? )

As can be seen by the figures below Dhoom 3 was way ahead in mumbai city has the big multiplexes put up massive numbers. The disappointment for Happy New Year has come in Pune, the collection should have been higher there. The collections in Surat from just 15 theatres are almost similar to the 40 plus theatres in Pune.

    http://www.dnaindia.com/entertainment/column-me-a-newbie-writes-shweta-bachchan-nanda-2031221

Newbie (n): A person at the beginning stages of something.

This weekend, I was being introduced by my 13-year-old to the mysteries and glories of online gaming. As any parenting handbook worth its salt or celebrity endorsement (this generation’s ultimate stamp of authority) will tell you – make your teen’s interests your interests!

So, I decide to educate myself on the one thing that commands my son’s attention… and very often, his respect! I am cuddled up next to him; this is already a great start, teens do not share their space, virtual or otherwise, with their parents, while he talks me through the rules of play.

The initiation being complete, I find myself rooting for my son’s pixelated online avatar, “Build that bridge, but watch your back!” I bark at the screen. “Oh! Mine those diamonds”, and so on and so forth. At some point, having had enough of my interference, he turns to me and says, “Mom, you’re such a newbie!!”

“What’s that?” I ask, “it’s someone who is new to and is over-enthusiastic about something”, he replies. “It’s a good thing, right?” I say with hope. Turns out, it isn’t.

Somewhere, in the last five years, the English language as my contemporaries and I knew it, has morphed into a complex lexicon, the intricacies of which not only every 4yo, geography notwithstanding, understands, but is fluent in it. Flub it up or use it out of its context, per 2014 standards and you find yourself the subject of a withering stare-down.

I thought the perks of being a young mom are staying cool and with it ad infinitum? We have been through so much together – the braces and bloody knees phase, a particularly trying Justin Bieber phase (my daughter’s) that, unfortunately, coincided with my son’s WWE phase, but with me always at the helm of things.

How does an obsessive-compulsive (the kids would add, severe control issues) stay-at-home mom, with 17 years of service to the cause of rearing under her belt, become the recipient of “you have no idea what you’re talking about, mom!” Were they speeding up, was I slowing down? The correct answer would be, a bit of both.

Life being life, the timing of this realisation was cruel. I find myself in my 40s, a heartbeat away from an existential mid-life crisis, battling a sluggish metabolism, jobless (as the kids have flown the coop to boarding school) and being redirected, from the Monopoly board equivalent of Trafalgar Square, straight to GO (without the compensatory £200). This is not what I meant when I prayed for a do-over.

So, like the true-blue ’80s child that I am, I eat my greens, pull up my socks and moonwalk right back to the starting line.

My name is Shweta. And I am a newbie.

It’s not only about HNY, but I usually comment mainly on the BO thread. I did the same with the other big movies like Holiday, Bang Bang or Singham Returns.

I have nothing against HNY personally. I admit I found the movie quite poor. But the trending has also been terrible and it’s difficult to put a positive spin to it. Cheers man! Let’s just hope better things for SRK, Farah, Deepika and Abhishek next time around.

    • It seems to have stabilized at this point. But this still looks like 180 or a bit more by the time the dust settles (at BOI). And 200-205 by the producer numbers or what have you.

I’ll say this again though and not for the first time. A film begins with highest ever numbers, later on it slips quite a bit, it stabilizes at some low point and the final total is certainly not anything extraordinary. And such a film is then celebrated more or less for not collapsing completely or not being a total washout. The two points are not contradictory. A big film, after disappointing, after underperforming, even after flopping can still find a low base. It’s all about the initial. K3 did as much too. BB did far less because it didn’t open like this either. But otherwise neither film did a Besharam. If we have the latter as the standard or some such thing nothing will ever seem too bad! My point is that such a film finding a base at the low end doesn’t mean all that much in the sense that it doesn’t change the overall reception of the film. If it stayed this way for a long time that would be one thing but that’s not going to happen. I can list several flops that trended like this or better. The difference was the initial. But that much larger initial doesn’t come for free. It comes at a vastly greater production cost or distribution cost or advertising cost or all three.

As far as I’m concerned HNY is a big underperformer. Wouldn’t call it a flop because by contemporary Bollywood standards it isn’t one and one can’t change definitions suddenly with this film. And I’m being completely consistent here. I consider 95% or more of these big releases to be underperformers. The remaining 5% or so do better. We saw CE for example. But even CE is a very far cry from the Ghajini or Singham kind of trending let alone anything more. And it’s not even like YJHD where essentially a multiplex film completely surprised everyone and did as much as HNY is going to do today! At least by BOI numbers. So if I were to establish levels in this sense I’d put some of those Aamir Khan films on top (opened hugely and trended hugely.. even D3 lower in the list would still be way higher than this other stuff because it maintained those high numbers for a much longer time), next YJHD (because relative to all the factors I’ve just mentioned it ‘over performed’), then CE/Dabanng (I’ve always said about Dabanng that though it matched the 3I opening, it eventually did not even match the Ghajini trending let alone the 3I one), then many of the others, finally stuff like Ra One or Jai Ho. HNY or K3 for me fall somewhere between the CE/Dabanng bracket and the Ra One/Jai Ho one. ETT too belongs with HNY and there are many others here. Most big releases these days in fact fall within this bracket. The media/trade celebrates them as successes or whatever. Contrary to what is peddled (and I argued with Krrish about this the other day) there’s no way these films are ‘hits’, no matter who says what and uses what labels or unverified numbers to justify the claim.

      Like

      • Great comment, however I thought CE and ETT were genuine hits, well liked and trended well ….(unlike Kick/ JTHJ/ HNY and others that you quote above)

      • The problem is there are not many films between the CE to Ghajini bracket…nor Ghajini to 3 Idiots. People THINK this is due to the market and how films do business today. I think, probably like you, that it is simply a film has not been “received” by the audience in this way (yet) i.e. the “so called” big grossers have underperformed and are not in this bracket.

        • I think too many people talk about Ghajini’s trending here. Lets checking it out with a movie released sametime.

          Ghajini 1st week = 63 crs(new record), Final Total = 115crs.
          RNBDJ 1st week = 42 crs(new record), Final Total = 86 crs.

Best trending? Am I missing something here?

        • The 63 was an 8 day total. Take a 7 day and it’s more like 56

          Like

        • week 1 was 55 or something, extended week was 63. It doubled it’s week 1. RNBDJ did so too though that 86 crore number has for certain reasons always seemed suspect to me. But in any case I’ve always mentioned RNBDJ. The problem though is that the film opened way below Ghajini, releasing just 2 weeks before the latter. And so it didn’t really make that kind of bang. Much as Singham doubled its week 1 too but then its opening wasn’t in that highest stratosphere. On that note OSO too doubled it. The reason Ghajini comes up is that it is the ONLY film among those that have made at least a 100 to have doubled its week 1. With the exception of 3I of course. The ONLY two films in that group. Now there are couple like Rajneeti or ZNMD that did the same though they ended up around 90 or so. But my point was always about films that would go from 60 to 100, 70 to 100, 80 to 110 and so on. The same holds for the 200 club. No film has doubled its week 1 to get to 150 or 200 barring 3I. Even D3 recemntly failed to do this. But it can be done and even today films that are truly liked do it at every level. Kahani and OMG for example and so on. By the way at that time doubling a week 1 was just the minimal bit that was often expected from a film. Today it seems like a fantasy for the most part (on the big films). Ghajini was spectacular in that it came close to doubling even its extended week run and given that it wasn’t masala-comedy or anything and had serious ‘trauma’ in the narrative it was all the more remarkable. But Ghajini is also a film where the gross, impressive as it is, nonetheless under-represents the gross because it sold a lot of tickets in small town India.

          Like

        • Well the ceiling before Ghajini was 80-85. We would have been celebrating RNBDJ but Ghajini showed what is the potential. Ghajini was not an universal movie for its content. It wasn’t even full on 1st day but slowly by the end of the week, people started coming back and it did very well by the end of 2 weeks and still trended well inspite Ghajini releasing on its 15th day only. Also, RNBDJ wasn’t a big film, per se, kinda small quickie for Srk-Adi chopra (nevermind the budget)

        • actually the film that was on when 26/11 happened was Dostana. the collections were hurt here but still the film didn’t vanish. Also it’s a bit hard to argue that people got ready two weeks later for a violent film! Finally I do agree that RNBDJ wasn’t treated like a big scale Yashraj production. On the other hand I don’t think all that much advertising was needed for this. But also if you then look at JTHJ you get the same sort of response. This film didn’t do well in any sense but it started off anemically too. Despite Katrina Kaif. The point is that genre had exhausted itself for quite some time and not even having a significant actress didn’t help. Nonetheless people liked that film more than many others SRK did and in fact it trended well despite Ghajini. Which again proves the point that if a film is really liked competition or the lack of a great release date might hurt it but won’t derail it (this can happen to small films). Now if it had released when Dostana did I could at least see the point. But to be honest there’s a larger pattern here too. Even with massive advertising SRK hasn’t really got strong initials since KANK except when he’s worked with Farah Khan, on Ra One and then with Shetty. Both Dons, JTHJ, RNBDJ, MNIK all fall in the category of films that had less than impressive starts and in most cases stayed sluggish throughout. Don2 for example released around Christmas. all those holidays, no competition, sequel to a remake and yet its business was more or less like that of the first film (which released on Diwali with JeM). So yes RNBDJ wasn’t the biggest film but it wasn’t insignificant either.

        • RNBDJ is not Dhobi Ghat. It is like any of SRK’s regular films with lots of songs and to boot a double role. Anushka looked better as a fresh face than Deepika or Asin, her then competitors.

I agree with Munna about the potential that Ghajini showing the way about being the first 100 crore grosser, i remember discussing on forums as to how RNBDJ will be first 100 crore grosser but it stopped at 86. Universally 3I showed how a movie can trend and gross 120 crores more after Week1. Now in recent times D3 tried to an extent to show the potential but it got limited to 260 plus crores. For me the next big well liked movie will go upto 320 crores.

Happy New Year was less than Kick and Dhoom 3 in all cities of the Delhi NCR area but that was expected as Dhoom 3 and Kick were outright action films and big budget action films have always ruled in North be it Delhi/UP or East Punjab

Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida are part of the Delhi/UP circuit while Gurgaon and Faridabad are in East Punjab but all for the Delhi NCR belt. The below totals are from 100 cinemas for Kick, 98 for Happy New Year and 93 cinemas for Dhoom 3.

Below are the first week collections from the four the Delhi NCR area for Happy New Year, Kick and Dhoom 3 .

  81. Okay Prakash Jaju reveales the reason for hating SRK!

    @PrakashJaju

Pc & i were fighting at our level, who was correct was to be decided by court. But at that time without getting into details

Our @iamsrk became her advisor. I dont blame Mr Sajid N., for doing same because its his habit to do chamchagiri of stars.

Because of combined effort of @iamsrk & Sajid N., i was trapped & had to go to jail for 67 days.

My father suffered heart attack because of that. How i got out of that is a miracle … I now dont have grudge against anybody.

I only want that ppl should know that there are also emotional ppl like @BeingSalmanKhan @ajaydevgn @aamir_khan @akshaykumar who are not working with her after my episode.

But @iamsrk never tried to get into the details of our dispute neither tried to get into the details & tried to solve it being a senior person of our industry. Instead he started taking her side.

I had also given 35 yrs to this industry will @iamsrk only help & support actresses & not any common man of the industry.

I salute @aamir_khan for not doing single film with her. Nor @ajaydevgn did after that

I am over that now but it was very hard to get recognisation back in society after spending 2 months in jail.

@iamsrk should not take things as lightly as he takes.

I am trying hard to get out of this negativity & leave everything on God. And i hope to succeed soon 🙂

I can’t understand why did Amit Ji, Abhishek n Aishwarya Ji apologise to SRK for comments of Jaya Bachchan Ji when she said only truth.

Hope above is not true !

    • Within a family people can have different opinions. SO what is the big deal when someone voices a different opinion. When Jaya says it is nonsensical movie, She is criticizing the movie and may be everyone associated with the movie including her son. I don’t know about the family dynamic in Bachchan family but there is no need for apology and gives the impression that you consider SRK higher and you want to please him.

Amitabh Bachchan Apologises To Shah Rukh Khan For Jaya Bachchan’s Nonsensical HNY Remark

“No wonder that Amitabh Bachchan felt the need to apologise to SRK over a text message, according to reports. Infact, rumours suggest Abhishek and Aishwarya even visited Mannat to apologise in person but while Gauri greeted them, SRK couldn’t meet.”

    • This is conjecture. I don’t think SRK is going to share his text messages (until and unless SRK PR spreads the rumors) or Gauri will go and say they came to apologize.

      • I haven’t been following all the links but indeed if she didn’t actually say this I’m disappointed! Not really endorsing the media ethics here either way. It’s always interesting to note though (judging by many of the comments here) how all such stories are picked up by people and given a certain slant depending on their own biases one way or the other. So there’s a ‘don’t take it seriously’ version where ‘she’s said stuff like this before about others’. There’s then a ‘Bachchans have sunk so low they run around apologizing’. Etc etc. I am surprised someone hasn’t come up with the ‘SRK apologized to Aishwarya’ story so far. There’s a tit-for-tat deal as well in these matters. The original stories are never confirmed. But nonetheless people run with it in various directions! I said I’d be disappointed for precisely the reason you mention. It was refreshing to see someone just say something outright! Too bad if it isn’t true! But getting back to the point I was making this is why a lot of the salacious media stuff sells. It doesn’t have to be true. It can be half-true, it can be total fiction. Either way it is consumed by some cross-section of folks.

But you’re right. Even elsewhere at so many levels of public discourse the need is quite often for those who ‘explode’ the existing banal conversations. It doesn’t matter what side one takes because the framing is just so cliched and boring. Once again what is required is for someone to precisely not play along!
