Abhishek Bachchan to address IIM Kozhikode on Friday

Abhishek Bachchan is currently nervous but confident. He is all set to address students at the Indian Institute Of Management in Kozhikode on Friday.
Though he belongs to a family filled with men of letter, Abhishek is nervous and anxious as this is his maiden academic speech.
And he is expected to speak on subjects other than just cinema.
Says Abhishek Bachchan, “I’ve to speak to students on cinema and my new role as a sports ambassador. I’ve to address them on issues related to cinema, sports and the dynamics of the two spheres of activity vis-a-vis the Indian subculture.”
What Abhishek Bachchan is specially looking forward to is the chance to communicate directly with the students. “After I speak, there will be an interactive session with the boys. So that’s quite an exciting prospect. I’ve never been involved in an academic discussion on cinema and sports before.”
The role of the sports ambassador is new to Abhishek Bachchan. With his involvement with and in kabbadi and football Abhishek has acquired an increasingly sporty image.
The success of his new film Happy New Year only adds to his equity as an all-rounder artiste.
Happy New Year Grosses 168 Crore In Two Weeks

Happy New Year grossed around 34.50 crore nett in its second week which is the second highest second week of the year after Kick which grossed around 47 crore nett. The film was aided a couple of partial holidays in the week but still it is a decent hold in week two.
In terms of all time second weeks it is eighth highest ever and behind last years Shahrukh Khan starrer Chennai Express which was around 37.50 crore nett. The highest second week ever is Dhoom 3 with a 64 crore nett total.
The total for Happy New Year after two weeks is around 168 crore nett and the film should finish around the 180 crore nett mark which would make it the sixth highest grossing film ever.
Seems Akshay Kumar is the scene stealer in the Shaukeens according to early reviews. It is really gratifying to note that he is flourishing without resorting to too much publicity.
Here is the latest update on the brewing ‘nonsensical’ debate. I think SRK may have crossed the line here if he really said this and feel sorry for the short lived bonhomie.
It seems once again the content from Deccan Chronicle has been removed.
Since AAA has established itself as a blockbuster and considered a classic too, SRK may get clobbered for collating / matching / contrasting both. I remember some discussions involving BandraNRI on blood donation scenes here and it would be interesting to hear the two sides……..lol
The Shaukeens Slow Start Rang Rasiya Very Poor Start

The Shaukeens had a slow start starting at around 20-25%. The film does feature Akshay Kumar in an extended guest role but the multiplex audience today is aware of these things so its not going to open like an Akshay Kumar starrer. But its still a plus to have a big star in these type of films as sometimes the opening can be so low that word of mouth can’t help much which is not the case with The Shaukeens.
The shaukeens is dependent on how word of mouth works for the film through the day and more importantly how well it grows tomorrow. Happy New Year will give it competition over Saturday and Sunday as families are coming to watch that film but The Shaukeens has got a release of around 1800 screens and that is more than enough for this type of film.
The Shaukeens is a remake of the 1982 film Shaukeen which was also a slow starter but did well in Mumbai city with a 25 week run. Rang Rasiya opened to practically empty houses all over with collectos of 0-5%.
Shaukeens….might just work. Akki would get good credit out easily. I like his new song Isshq Kutta Kutta hai….i am drinking coffee from a cup that says i love dogs…not mine.
What is a literary festival without controversy? A spar between authors is always entertaining (especially for the onlooker and other writers); it provides a slanging match where instead of four-letter words, words of many syllables fly around, and reputations are sought to be muddied by witty put-downs.
But this particular controversy was unfortunate because it involved someone outside the world of books and publishing. After much coaxing, Jaya Bachchan agreed to be at the 5th Tata Literature Live! Her session was to be a conversation with a writer who she is comfortable with, the young and slender Siddarth Dhanavant Shanghvi. The subject was the confluence of literature and cinema.
All went swimmingly well. But in the evening a prominent (so I am told) Bollywood website played up one half-sentence from a one hour conversation: “Jaya Bachchan calls Happy New Year nonsensical,” the website said in quotation marks. Since the internet thrives on controversy, this soon went viral and Jaya was understandably upset. Why would she publicly call a film ‘nonsensical’ which had her own son in it? I thought I should rebut this, but rebut whom? It was now all over the place — so I issued a statement, which might sound rather a pompous thing to do, but I had no alternative. It went like this: “Without meaning to sound pretentious, a literary festival provides a forum for the exchange of ideas. If it’s a lively festival, as I believe Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest is, this exchange is laced with wit and humour.

And this is precisely what happened when Jaya Bachchan was in conversation with Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi. Her remarks about Happy New Year being ‘nonsensical’, when taken out of context, sound like harsh criticism of the film, but when quoted in full show that she was talking of two kinds of cinema that exist in India — those based on literary works and those that are pure entertainment. She enjoyed both these kinds of films, she said (as all those who heard the discussion would attest). An example she gave of the latter was of Amar, Akbar, Anthony, a film she said she enjoyed immensely, as much as she did Happy New Year. In fact, she said, she complimented her son Abhishek for his role, because it’s something she couldn’t have done herself. Unfortunately a lot of damage seems to have been done due to viral nature of media. I will admit though its only on ‘perception’ level because srk-bachchan relationship may come out stronger out of this.
The real loser to this deal has been Farah who gets stamped with ‘nonsensical’ again after TMK but then she deserves it and hopefully will learn from her mistakes and keep it simpler next time around.

Not really Pradip…..explanation was referring to Jaya B’s mutterings which were selectively picked up by the media and at the end of the day srk- bachchan will shrug it off and move on with their bonding if they wish to do so as none depends on other for survival.
Unfortunately it’s the word ‘nonsensical’ which has come to be associated with the movie quoted all over and the song ‘nonsense ki night’ has not helped too. Since this movie came immediately after TMK, Farah may have to face the brunt of the negativity associated with this movie at the end when dust settles down. I doubt she can get funding for a movie without a top notch star attached to her next project and its here the reputation will precede anything she does ahead.
Gone Girl led the way this month with $129.6 million. After opening to an impressive $37.5 million, the movie has held incredible well—it hasn’t dropped more than 37 percent in a single weekend.
Actually Jaya Bachchan’s comment on AAA are not too dissimilar from what Rakhee said about AB’s films a while back (I of course disagree with them) –
“What do you think of today’s Bollywood?
I am nobody to judge today’s cinema but if you insist, here’s my personal opinion. Today’s hit films have a shelf life of seven days, the lyrics are incomprehensible, and the music is so noisy. Rajesh Khanna brought good films. Amitabh Bachchan brought bad films. I haven’t liked a single SRK film after DDLJ. Aap kabhi robot bante ho, kabhi superman. What are you trying to prove? Be human. Taare Zameen Par was the last Hindi film I saw in the theatre.”

The Shaukeens had poor start of 20% at the box office and did not pick up much in the evening. The business was very dull in the Eastern markets. The growth on Saturday will have to be excellent if the film is to come out with a respectable weekend.
Rang Rasiya had a very dull start and has little chance at the box office though the film did show better collections in the evening at some multiplexes. The film has managed to release on around 800 screens across India.
Roar – Tigers Of The Sunderbans and Super Nani could not make any headway at the box office and collected 8 crore nett and 2.25 crore nett respectively.
Happy New Year is a Super Hit and second biggest hit of 2014 as it held well in week two with a collections of 34 crore nett apprx. The film is heading for a final total in the 175-180 crore nett range. SUPER HIT
A superhit at 180 crores. And people were debating recently why I thought their commentary on SRK films was less than straight! If it now does 200 it might beat HAHK as a success!
and yes I agree.. if HNY at 175 is a ‘super hit’ BB at 140 or whatever probably deserves a ‘hit’ tag. And this has been my point . it’s not as if this is some crazy way of doing things because it’s clearly not consistent/honest. And I hope no one will show up now to say that HNY was made for Rs 10 and BB for made for Rs 20!
Unfortunately your last line is part of the answer. I know you do not toe that line but trade usually judge the movie based on cost. I do agree Super hit is stretching it a bit. The movie will end up as a hit with around 95 crore distributor share. Bang Bang was a much much more costly movie (140 cr with P and A) and it did around 70 crore distributor share.
The movie has surely under performed from an expectation point of view , there is no doubt about it.
Reportedly Bachchan has met Hrithik again today. Don’t know what is cooking between these two. In case there is any joint venture in the pipeline, then not a good news for Hrithik fans as a huge star and flopstar can’t share a common plateform.
Agreed. Very bad news. This ‘plate’form signals the end of the project Nolan was planning with HR about about the mathematical geniuses of a father-son duo – who could turn all existing arithmetic on its head having an impact from box-office numbers to time-travel..
Hrithik can play Robot easily but what’ll Bachchan do? The scientist part that was played by Rajni was a classic one.Hpoe he doesn’t end like Gabbar Sing here. I think the memories of Babban in Ramu ki Aag must be still doing rounds in the minds of some folks here.
Shaukeens is more entertaining and enjoyable than HNY Akshay is just superb. At 47 he looks 10 years younger than SRK at 49. His 20 minute role leaves way more impact than 180 minute of Hamming in HNY
btw BOI is back to its tricks of regressing numbers of this movie. Have you noticed they have crusade against Akshay and Hrithik. There movies are initially underreported by 30% for Max impact. SRK an Salman movies are under reported only by 10% while Amir and Ajay by 5% . This seems to happen regardless of Distributer it is high time that bollywood creates an authentic boxoffice collection entity such as boxofficemojo.
Saw Club 60 .. What a surprise little Gem. Actually i never even heard about this movie before, Had no idea about its release year. I watched it on my flight to US, It takes time for me to chose this over other crappy Bollywood movies, but i am Glad of my choice .. will put more details later on, at this moment only i can say that this is must watch for all age groups. It has life lessons for everyone, not only 60+. Movie is very well directed and what a Great performance from raghubir Yadav. Actually this movie makes me wonder at two fronts : 1. How Superior actors like Raghubir Yadav are heavily underutilized 2. WOM movies still don’t work in India, otherwise how many small good movies went unnoticed ? After seeing movie, i took a quick look at its BO collection, its lifetime is under 42 Lakhs. What a shame !!! Indian audience at its worst taste.
Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar took first place on Friday, though family moviegoers should drive Disney Animation’s Big Hero 6 to a weekend win.
After two days in limited release, Interstellar expanded to 3,561 locations and earned an estimated $17 million. That’s well below Inception’s $21.8 million debut, though it is at least roughly on par with Gravity’s $17.5 million start last year.
Interstellar’s audience was split evenly between men (52 percent) and women, and skewed much older (75 percent were at least 25 years of age). They awarded the movie a “B+” CinemaScore, which is in line with Inception.
Also of note: IMAX generated $4.6 million, or a whopping 27 percent of the total Friday number.
If Interstellar holds up like Gravity, it will end the weekend with $54 million. A more likely outcome is a performance similar to Skyfall, which opened around the same time in 2012: that pattern would put Interstellar at $49 million for the weekend.
I am loving the score of Rahman as felt it the theatrical promo, I have always longed for a Rahman original score – Background music. I hope it becomes available.
Review: Ashutosh Gowariker’s Everest is bland and tacky
Ashutosh Gowariker’s Everest is made so tackily, it hurts, says Raja Sen.
The future of Indian television is, clearly and tragically, in the wrong hands.
The efforts made to “class up” our prime-time viewing are ambitious yet fundamentally flawed.
The right motion-picture directors are hopping aboard but they have so far refused to bring their storytelling finesse to the small screen.
Anurag Kashyap’s Yudh was an absolute debacle, a loony show that, while it featured a good cast, lacked originality and compelling characters.
And now comes Ashutosh Gowariker with Everest, a show with a potentially decent storyline and characters but one that is produced so tackily, it hurts.
Everest is unwatchably bad right from the get-go, a badly acted and awfully scripted show that hurts more than a daily soap simply because it pretends to be better than that.
It’s not.
Now the fundamental issue here is that there are so many options on television that, mediocre as the alternatives may be, the viewer isn’t prone to give something a chance unless it is compelling from the start.
The pilot episode is what lays the tone for the show’s narrative, what tells us what to expect and what sets everything up: in that context, the Everest premiere is sheer bilge.
Like I said, the story itself at the heart of it all has promise. We see an overachieving girl out in the mountains mounting a rescue; the other protagonist is a boy deathly afraid of heights after once having let a loved one plunge to his doom. There are, even on the most basic of storytelling levels, possibilities. But the execution is horrid.
Let us, for an excruciating moment, visit one scene: the girl goes and fetches the morning paper, her mother teases her for having woken up so early, to which she reminds her mother that her graduation ceremony is that evening.
Next up, the army-man dad who derides civilians and scowls at his paper.
The girl nervously tells him that she, a literature student, has topped the collegiate exams on a state level.
Good, he says unsmilingly.
She asks him if he’d come to her graduation ceremony, and — while mom and daughter wait with bated breath — he says he’ll see.
Cue jubilant daughter and ecstatic mom flashing her a thumbs up.
The only way this nonsense can lead to something good is if it is later revealed that he’s a kidnapper not a father, that the ladies have Stockholm Syndrome something fierce, and that the graduation ceremony is something wonderfully sinister.
But let’s not hold our breath (or keep our thumbs ready to indicate triumph).
What Gowariker will say is that the show will take time to settle in and that he hasn’t directed the first episode.
Kashyap did the same thing with Yudh.
But if they want to try and shake things up on the small screen, they really should get their hands dirty themselves, just like master directors Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, and David Fincher are doing out West. Treating television like a stepchild just shows you aren’t looking at things clearly enough.
As for Everest, as a friend I forced to watch the episode with me said, the mass-manufactured masala is better. I agree; at least it does what it says on the box.
Anil Kapoor nailed it in 24 hours on Colors. Because the defining and more interesting role was played not by Anil Kapoor but by Neil Bhoopalam. TV audience know what they want.
I heard even 24 was also only average on TV. I didnt get the chance to catch it. I am looking forward to everest though… love the rahman music. And Gowarikar’s films take some time, so shall give that chance to Everest.
Everest is not as bad as Sen’s review suggests. I have started watching it for the sake of viewing those majestic mountains, tall trees, the gurgling streams and also how trekkers start their journey. It is refreshing to watch something different from saas bahu crap.

The Shaukeens fared poorly on day one as it grossed around 3.50 crore nett. The start was slow but the problem was that it did not pick up much and the final collections came in similar to what they looked in the morning.
The better business has come in multiplexes outside the metros like in East Punjab and the Central belts with East and South being poor. Business in Uttar Pradesh was also not upto the mark as was the case with most single screens. There will be growth on Saturday but probably not the sort that the film needs to put up a respectable first weekend total.
Rang Rasiya also fared poorly as it collected around 60 lakh nett on day one though it have a better response in the evening at some multiplexes. Overall collections are too low for the film to go anywhere.

Happy New Year grossed around 1 crore nett on its third Friday. It was a 75-80% fall from last Friday as there was a major release like The Shaukeens. Nevertheless the film should show huge growth over the weekend like last week as the film has appreciation amongst the family audience and because The Shaukeens has not performed up to the mark.
The film should have weekend around the 4.50 crore nett mark with Mumbai and Delhi/UP being the best markets. Kick had grossed 8.25 crore nett in week three and Happy New Year is unlikely to reach that mark for its third week.
The film looks to be heading for around 60 crore nett business in Mumbai circuit and around 32 crore nett in Delhi/UP. in East Punjab it will do around 15 crore nett and will be the only circuit where it beats the business of Chennai Express. It will be Shahrukh Khan’s highest grosser ever in East Punjab.
BOI numbers are even HIGHER than the producers numbers in HNY and earlier in the case of kick — this lays thread-bare the BOI agenda

In what could be considered a minor upset, Disney Animation’s Big Hero 6 took the top spot at the box office this weekend ahead of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar.
If Interstellar’s estimate holds up (and there’s a good chance it doesn’t) this will mark the fourth time that two movies opened above $50 million. In all four cases, an animated movie took first place over a live-action flick.
Playing at 3,761 theaters, Big Hero 6 opened to an estimated $56.2 million this weekend. That’s up 15 percent from fellow Disney Animation movie Wreck-It Ralph, which opened to $49 million around the same time in 2012. Big Hero 6 also had the second-highest animated opening of the year ahead of How to Train Your Dragon 2 ($49.5 million).
This is undeniably a strong start for Big Hero 6: it’s rare that an original animated movie opens to $50-million-plus. By promoting the unique, humorous robot Baymax, Disney managed to get huge turnout from family moviegoers (they represented 72 percent of attendance this weekend). Still, there was an assumption that Frozen’s phenomenal success had elevated the Disney Animation brand to a new level, and that didn’t exactly prove true this weekend.
With an “A” CinemaScore and strong reviews, Big Hero 6 should play well in the coming weeks. If it holds up like Wreck-It Ralph, it will end its run with over $215 million.
At 3,561 theaters, Interstellar opened to an estimated $50 million. Including two days in limited release, Interstellar has so far earned $52.15 million. The three-day opening is below Nolan’s Inception ($62.8 million), last year’s Gravity ($55.8 million), and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus ($51.1 million).
The movie earned $13.4 million from 368 IMAX theaters, which is ahead of recent November movies Skyfall ($12.75 million) and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($12.6 million). IMAX accounted for 26 percent of the overall weekend, which is an incredibly high percentage that’s indicative of some of the movie’s marketing challenges.
Christopher Nolan’s diehard fans showed up this weekend, and did so in the filmmaker’s preferred format (IMAX). Outside of that group, though, the movie didn’t really connect. Non-IMAX screens earned less than $37 million this weekend; compare that to recent mindbending sci-fi movie Lucy, which opened to $43.9 million without an IMAX run.
Why didn’t Interstellar connect more with average moviegoers? While it had some strong visuals, there wasn’t anything particularly memorable—at least, there was nothing on par with Inception’s folding city or spinning hallway. It also appeared to be light on action compared to Inception or last year’s Gravity. Add in mixed reviews (73 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and a publicity campaign that focused overwhelmingly on the science (to the point where this seemed like a homework assignment), and this wound up being a tough sell.
There’s a lot of talk about how the movie’s 169-minute runtime may have affected opening weekend. That argument doesn’t seem to hold much water, though. Audiences have consistently demonstrated in the past that they’re willing to sit through very lengthy movies—Nolan’s last three outings are all over 145 minutes long, and two of them debuted north of $155 million (yes, both of those do feature Batman).
It’s also unlikely that the runtime significantly limited showtimes: with weak holdovers, many theaters were able to run Interstellar on more than one screen. In other words, supply equaled demand here.

If Interstellar holds up as well as Skyfall—which opened around the same time in 2012—it will wrap up with over $170 million.
I’d be disappointed with even 170 here. Inception did 260 or so at the time. The earlier mojo piece suggested that the audience grade was the same here as the one given to Inception.
i think this film will hold really well. some of the people might’ve been turned off because it may be be a little too ‘scientific-y’…but nolan has done an excellent job of instilling some drama/emotion/thrills/amazing visuals in this movie.
i saw this movie on ‘regular’ IMAX and i absolutely loved it. i wanted to see it in ‘true’ IMAX but tickets were sold out both friday and saturday. I will watch it again (this time in ‘true’ IMAX) this coming weekend.
this movie does an excellent job on making us think of all the ‘what ifs’ and pushes our minds and imagination into another realm of possibilities…one of the best sci-fi movies. the only drawback for me was mcconaughey…thought the moment was too big for him and he failed to deliver at key moments. probably could only see clooney or denzel pulling this ‘kind’ of movie off…it is not an easy role to pull off…hell this is not an easy movie to make..but nolan dares to imagine and then actually has the balls to make it into ‘his’ reality. i found myself literally wide-eyed, jaw-dropped on numerous occasions throughout the movie. amazing job.

The 2.50 crore nett plus difference is mainly from the South India markets of Nizam/Andhra, Mysore and Tamil Nadu/Kerala. This is probably because Chennai Express was set in South India. the other circuits across India have similar figures.
The two week business of Happy New Year is 168.50 crore nett approx while Chennai Express grossed 184 crore nett including its paid previews.

The business of the films stands at eighth place on the all time list and should finish in sixth places as it is likely to cross Krrish 3 (175 crore nett) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (178 crore nett). The fifth placed film is Ek Tha Tiger at 186 crore nett but Happy New Year will stay below that figure.
Till date the film has grossed over 60 crore nett in Mumbai and over 31 crore nett in Delhi/UP. The final collections for Chennai Express in these circuits was 68 crore nett and 39 crore nett respectively. In East Punjab it has grossed 15 crore nett while the business for Chennai Express was 14.40 crore nett.
Even 4.5 crore weekends are being celebrated. You’ve got to be a special kind of person to find some positives even at this stage!
There is no “real” hold here. A film that goes from a 135 crore first week to 34 crore 2nd week and 7 crore 3rd week is not really holding well. The producers trends are even more pronounced as the gap in week 1 is much bigger than week 2 and 3, so the trend looks even worse.
The film’s not been rejected that’s for sure, but it’s basically struggled from first Monday onwards. I’d call it below average to average, of course trade/producers will call it a hit of sorts.
To start so well and end up folding short of ETT is a disappointment. In fact K3 did “better” because it had a 123 cr first week but got to a near equivalent total.
So BB and HNY had the huge holiday edge and made nothing of it. Holidays make a difference, but the basics of economics always work in the end, the product is the most important thing. Singham 140 cr, BB 150 cr and HNY 180 cr…whereas Kick did not even start on a holiday (it got it advantages “later”) and blew all of them out of the water by a huge distance. D3 did not even start on a holiday too, it had to wait 5 days.
CG: I desperately want to watch this. And Veeyen (the Now Running guy), the only half-decent Malayalam film critic I have come across (do you know anyone else because the rest of the guys are just piss-poor) has called it the best Malayalam film of the year-

Saurabh, unfortunately, no I don’t really know of any decent Malayalam film reviewers writing in English. I typically read as many as I can and get a feel for the film that way. Paresh Palicha does seem to come closest to flagging the films I usually enjoy, but his writing tone is quite off-puttlingly condescending.
All said, this does look quite good. Sounds like Amal Neerad has come out of his slump, and is good to hear about a decent Fahad role again after his recent quiet period.
CG: Unlike me If you haven’t yet had the misfortune of reading Paresh Palicha’s review of Varsham, you should avoid it with a bargepole until you see the film- the guy has stupidly given out a huge spoiler in his review (or atleast that is what I feel because no other review has “revealed” that plot point. And while I don’t follow the language, I thought the trailer of the film also never mentioned it). I really want to watch Varsham as well.
You are right on Fahadh that he has had a bit of a slump this year (though check out his God’s Own Country, one of the better films this year). He has a romantic-drama with the very talented Radhika Apte (where was she all these days?! I really liked her in Shor in the City) called “Haram” coming up next. Let’s see. I really hope he gets a “defining” sort of a role soon; perhaps he needs to work with a Tamil or a Bollywood director now (I mean let’s face it, as much as I enjoy these new Malayalam films and in some ways prefer them to the current Bollywood scene, as far as top-notch filmmaking is concerned Bollywood is ahead by some miles as of now. I know there are folks like Shaji Karun and Adoor, but you get my point! IQuite often I end up feeling that Fahadh was better than the film). But interestingly, come to think of it one of Fahadh’s greatest strengths- his refusal to be typecasted, to be boxed into a category- might also become a bit of a weakness in the sense that he hasn’t developed a “signature” (I don’t even see him repeating something minor like a body gesture). To put simply, he is a star without a star-signature (and someone needs to do a profile-piece on the guy soon. I wish Caravan or even Outlook does a write-up on him though chances of anything like this in the near future) and that might come in the way of him getting those “dramatic parts” (notice how he still takes up supporting parts- Bangalore Days, Immanuel- provided that it is well-written and has no qualms featuring in multistarrers…not just in Iyobinte, but also something like God’s Own Country and Amen. Typically his films quite often have well-etched female roles sometimes even to the extent that the actresses get the scene-stealing parts or the “more’ central parts- Artist, Akam, Annayum Rasoolum, 22 Female Kottayam, heck even stuff like Natholi Oru Cheriya and N24 Kaatham). I mean even when he does go for a more central part, it is more often than not a “smaller film” (even his performance is bereft of those typical histrionics associated with that sort of a role, he really underplays things). He should perhaps cut down on the number of films and become more ruthless while selecting roles. And really should look towards working in even more “authentic films” (Iyobinte, from the looks of it, seems to be that kind of film though it’s ofcourse an ensemble one) though he should continue to do these “middle-cinema’ projects (Annayum, NK24, Artist) as well. Perhaps find the right balance. I wish Rathnam would have taken him instead of Dulquer.
While I am yet to see Njan Steve Lopez (not sure why they haven’t yet released the DVD yet), Njan and Swapaanam (I have had this with me for quite sometime now, but haven’t got around to it), the Malayalam film I have liked most this year is “Munnariyippu”. It’s a hard film to like in the first viewing- it’s simply not very accessible plot-wise- but it’s also the sort of film you want to revisit in a jiffy. The Mammootty performance is a very interesting one- it is “opaque” by design, he doesn’t give you an inch as far as knowing the motivation of his characters is concerned, in other words the performance is an inaccessible as the film is and yet it draws you in (this sounds contradictory I know). It’s a very difficult performance and is the performance of the year as far as I am concerned). I also thought this is far and away the most impressive Malayalm film I have seen as far “staging” the scenes are concerned (with the exception of Kutty Srank). The background score by Bijbal is arresting. And the female lead, Aparna Gopinath, is a real find- for much of the running she is the one who has the more “active” part. I think Munnariyippu will very easily make my year-end best-of-Indian-cinema list (with the Mammootty performance as the personal favourite of the year closely followed by Kangana in Queen and Sanjay Mishra in Ankhon Dekhi).
Another film I am waiting for is Ennu Ninte Moideen. Looks really interesting; I think Prithvi can be really effective when used well, but more importantly the film has Parvathy Menon who is quite simply one of the best young talents in the entire country (I wait for the day when she gets cast opposite Fahadh)
Saurabh, thanks for the heads up. Haven’t read his review of Varsham yet, so will stay away. Have quite liked Ranjith Sankar’s earlier movies Passenger, Molly Aunty Rocks and especially Punyalan Agarbathis so Varsham is definitely on my watch list.
Thanks for the thoughts on Munariyippu- sounds like one of the more offbeat Ranjith movies. Will look out for this. If you liked this, try to get hold of Kaiyoppu- another somewhat opaque Ranjith movie with a brilliant Mammootty performance.
Haven’t got around to watching God’s Own Country yet even though I have the DVD so will catch that next. Am completely with you on Fahadh’s career- part of the reason he’s so interesting I suspect is that one is never sure what to expect from his movies since he mixes it up so much.

BOI going blue in the face trying to prop up HNY. I dont recall them providing this much detail and comparative analysis to any other big release previously. They wont drop this commentary till the last penny is counted and the narrative firmly places HNY in the pantheon of the greats.
and the funny thing is that even as they’re using these comparisons very selectively they might want to explain why HNY after starting much bigger than Kick is actually going to fall so much behind it (using their own numbers each way!).
And then listing it as a super hit is a very bad joke!
one thing is clear – SRK cant beat aamir or sallu at the B.O. unless he does something really special – he needs to experiment with different roles now – I saw CE recently – and I thought his charm is still intact and he needs to work with Hirani / Mani ratnam / Shankar .

The Shaukeens had a reasonable hold on Monday as dropped around 40% from Friday but the collections are low. As the Friday collections were low, there is always a chance of a decent hold on Monday

The film is likely to have a first week in the 19.50-20 crore nett which should have been the weekend business. Kill Dill is releasing on Friday so it will hard to get good numbers in week two..

Abhishek Bachchan is on cloud nine. Not just his last movie “Happy New Year” rocked the box-office, but his team Pro Kabaddi League team Jaipur Pink Panthers also won the 2014 championship. And we sure hope that his Hero Indian Super League Team Chennaiyin FC also does well at the ongoing season. The actor says that he wants to be a part of the football revolution in India.
In an interaction with Absolute India, Abhishek said, “Well my main reason for doing it is because I want to be part of the football revolution in India. I want to be part of the clan that is making a difference with football in India.”
He further said that the ultimate goal is to have a team play for India in the World Cup and that’s why he got involved with ISL, adding, “There is a huge amount of sporting talent in India and it is about time they are given their due. These leagues are only going to bring out even more (fresh) talent.”

Aditya Chopra to launch SRK’s son Aryan Khan in Dhoom?

While film-maker Aditya Chopra’s Dhoom franchise has had stars like Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan in its earlier renditions, multiple other big names are likely to join the film’s cast in the next instalment. Salman Khan and Aryan Khan are likely to feature in Dhoom.
Aryan Khan: Shah Rukh’s son is studying at the Sevenoaks School in UK. Amitabh Bachchan’s granddaughter Navya Naveli reportedly also studies there.
Reportedly, Salman Khan will play a villain in the next instalment of the film. Also, there’s speculation that Shah Rukh Khan might be on board soon. An online portal recently quoted him saying that he is keen to be part of the franchise. “If I get an opportunity, I would love to do it (DHOOM 4). I find it very cool (sic),” Shah Rukh was quoted as saying.
But interestingly, apart from big names like Salman and Shah Rukh, the future instalments of Dhoom might also mark SRK’s son, Aryan Khan’s, Bollywood debut. “Aditya is planning to launch Aryan with Dhoom 6, which is likely to be co-produced by SRK,” says a source. But, we have been told that work on the film will take a few years. “Since Shah Rukh is very particular about his kids’ education, the film is likely to take off when Aryan turns 21 (he will turn 17 tomorrow — November 13) and he is done with his studies,” adds the source. OMFG! Exactly what we were talking about yesterday. These guyz have gone nutzz. Are they seriously doing this to spite us? Perhaps reading our comments and showing us 2 middle fingers: Hum to kheench kheench ke yahi reporting karenge, jo chahey kah lo.
It should be noted that the very people who bring BOI into every box office argument have gone completely silent on their reporting. Not just now, but since the beginning of box office debates.
Even the most diehard/mental fans wouldn’t come up with this kind of nonsense. And yet, there’s complete silence from the website’s supporters…
BOI’s reporting on HNY would have you think this is running to packed houses in week 3. But the reality is its 7-8 crore in week 3 will compare unfavourably to many films’ week 3. 3 Idiots scored a monstrous 30 crore all those years ago. YJHD over 20 crore. Dabangg/CE/Barfi/BMB/RR/Ghajini all between 15-18 crore.
The acid test for most big films still remain how they do in week 2 or week 3. Those are the weeks where you put up the truly big totals. Week 1 MOST big films will score heavily.
It’s a trivial discussion talking about week 3 if the film is making 7-8 crore. That’s how much 3 Idiots was making in week 5! But BOI gives us a daily update anyway, like it’s never happened before and I am sure the films mentioned above did not get this level coverage!
plus when big films are celebrated for going from 75 lakhs on a Fri to 1.25 crores or something on a Saturday in their third weekend or whatever any performance would be ‘creditable’ as long as the film made something more than zero! So you could have a film do Rs 10 and then go to Rs 70 the next day and BOI would say ‘great jump’!

I don’t know about the support part, but I still feel they are the most consistent site when it comes to ‘number’ reporting and this is attested by the fact that Satyam regulary quotes them on this blog as a box-office update and not some other random ‘box-office capsule’ and ‘box office India’ or even a ‘Bollywood Hungama’ who basically are mouth pieces for their stars / producers.
As I had stated sometime earlier, the commentary definitely displays a bias towards a particular star/stars esp when they throw in their two cents and try to reason it out ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ with their readers….
Initially they were flattish on HNY but midway they have tried to altered their course to make it bit of a softer landing for the movie wrt final verdict. It is pretty visible SRK and team went on the defensive after the first few days and sort of took HR route of amplifications / sometime baloney in order to manage the media including TV channels to get a ‘perceptive’ hit/ acceptance.
Bottom-line is a fully loaded Diwali bonanza should at the least do 250 cr in today’s market and I feel sorry for the smaller movies that don’t even get a chance on these big ‘movie going dates’ . I continue to feel we the audience are the bigger losers on these days……
Lastly on box office, I still think the KRK types make sense when he says – Collections are 4trade ppl only. I can’t understand why r #2RsPpl fighting over collections of #HappyNewYear? They shud watch film n enjoy.
Actually that’s not true.. I quote whatever’s available.. usually someone or the other puts up the producer numbers. Sometimes people do this for BOI. IBOS used to do this, they stopped doing so a long time ago or I would have put these up too. Sometimes I put up NBOC. The point is that once you put up the producer numbers and then the BOI ones there’s no point in putting up others unless there’s something drastically different. But if no one quoted the producer numbers I’d put them up. If someone did BOI regularly I wouldn’t put these up either. for me none of this is about what the truth regarding a given film is. It’s simply what’s out there and one can make sense of it (or not) as one likes. But the idea that BOI is more consistent or more reliable or whatever is one I flatly reject. Even restricting oneself to the commentary it’s contradictory to suggest that a source is completely honest on the numbers but then completely dishonest on the commentary! And it’s not just HNY. I’ve seen it in every single case. And it’s not just about the gross number. It’s also about selecting examples that are decontextualized, that serve a larger narrative and so forth. A lot of their centers are just pulled out of a hat. Taran used to do this when he reported some of the numbers. Barring a few of the very major cities the other centers were often different. So if you had a film doing very well in Maharashtra and ok in N India you could put up more centers from the former. The overall picture would suddenly look better. Similarly when BOI want to say a film is doing very well they find the example to suit the narrative. It might be one center in one case but a different one in another. All of these guys have the ethics of crooks as far as I’m concerned. If they happen to be closer to the truth on some occasions that’s not by design! Even in these 2014 lists they’ve put up the very same absurdity obtains that I was complaining about even a decade ago. Somehow smaller films find it harder to become hits to super-hits or whatever. The biggest films just because they get the biggest grosses are also called hits or blockbusters when presumably they also have the highest costs. Somehow one is supposed to believe that the smaller films actually have heavier production and/or distribution costs! Which is what some of those ratings would indicate. This doesn’t make any sense. So it’s not one thing or the other. The entire system of reporting numbers is deeply dishonest in India no matter who’s doing it. Sure, you can usually tell looking at everything how well or not a film has done relative to contemporary standards. But anything more is a fantasy.

Happy New Year has emerged the second biggest hit of the year after Kick. The film has managed to sustain in weeks two and three adter it had dropped in the weekdays in most circuits outside Mumbai. Kick remains the only blockbuster of the year with only PK left to challenge it now.
The business of in terms of nett and share will beat last years Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Krrish 3 but not Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express. Its been disappointing in terms of big hits as last year there were more bigger hits.
The first ten months have accumulated 2250 crore nett and the figure for last year was 2800 crore nett. Its looking a stiff ask to beat last years number unless somehow PK gets 3.5 crore people to the theatres which has not happened in the last 12 years. It needs to be noted that Indian pitches have contributed to all 4 double tons in ODIs, of which Rohit Sharma now has 2! But poor bowling and batting conditions don’t explain this exponential rise in batting records.
For the record, it took cricket teams 3.5 years to score as much as 264 since the beginning of ODIs.
I still believe bowlers are contributing to batting records by not swinging the ball as much (if at all) and captains contribute by setting way too much defensive fields, losing any chance of early edges/wickets.
Most bowlers seem to have accepted this fate, which only seems to perpetuate further because of their own limiting beliefs.
Having said all of this, test cricket, will always be the real deal. Always!

So, get this: If there’s a film that crosses 100 crores, you get 100 points. If a film crosses 200 crores you get 200 points. If your film makes 199.99 crores, you get…100 points! Makes sense? Of course it does. This, when the reported numbers are all over the place and can’t be trusted to begin with.
Then there’s the overseas number that doesn’t depend on any particular gross. Just the # of films in a top 10 list is enough to get 50 points! Nevermind the ratio of people watching films in the overseas market to the Indian domestic scenario, this just has to be put in to favor one particular star!
Who pays these guys is becoming crystal clear. The fact that some people will still fall for these shenanigans is the saddest part of the whole exercise…
The most basic mathematical analysis of Box Office prowess would follow the cricket formula: look at the averages.
The average gross for a star over a 3-4 year window, which would be the cumulative gross divided by the number of films.
Of course that’s a very basic metric. This doesn’t take into account the timing of the release (festive season or not) or the marketing budget for the film, the relative popularity of co-stars etc. This is in line with cricket where a batsman’s record doesn’t take into account the strength of the opposition, the pitches etc. So the method isn’t perfect at all…just a basic indicator of current form.
But to come up with these power indices without an iota of thought is stupidity of the highest order! Actually, it’s not just stupid, it’s agenda-driven as well…
The process is designed to drive a result. Most people create a model to derive a result but some people know the result they want and make the model changes to get that result.

Happy New Year Grosses 168 Crore In Two Weeks

Happy New Year grossed around 34.50 crore nett in its second week which is the second highest second week of the year after Kick which grossed around 47 crore nett. The film was aided a couple of partial holidays in the week but still it is a decent hold in week two.
In terms of all time second weeks it is eighth highest ever and behind last years Shahrukh Khan starrer Chennai Express which was around 37.50 crore nett. The highest second week ever is Dhoom 3 with a 64 crore nett total.
The total for Happy New Year after two weeks is around 168 crore nett and the film should finish around the 180 crore nett mark which would make it the sixth highest grossing film ever.

The Shaukeens had a slow start starting at around 20-25%. The film does feature Akshay Kumar in an extended guest role but the multiplex audience today is aware of these things so its not going to open like an Akshay Kumar starrer. But its still a plus to have a big star in these type of films as sometimes the opening can be so low that word of mouth can’t help much which is not the case with The Shaukeens.
The shaukeens is dependent on how word of mouth works for the film through the day and more importantly how well it grows tomorrow. Happy New Year will give it competition over Saturday and Sunday as families are coming to watch that film but The Shaukeens has got a release of around 1800 screens and that is more than enough for this type of film.
The Shaukeens is a remake of the 1982 film Shaukeen which was also a slow starter but did well in Mumbai city with a 25 week run. Rang Rasiya opened to practically empty houses all over with collectos of 0-5%.

What is a literary festival without controversy? A spar between authors is always entertaining (especially for the onlooker and other writers); it provides a slanging match where instead of four-letter words, words of many syllables fly around, and reputations are sought to be muddied by witty put-downs.
But this particular controversy was unfortunate because it involved someone outside the world of books and publishing. After much coaxing, Jaya Bachchan agreed to be at the 5th Tata Literature Live! Her session was to be a conversation with a writer who she is comfortable with, the young and slender Siddarth Dhanavant Shanghvi. The subject was the confluence of literature and cinema.
All went swimmingly well. But in the evening a prominent (so I am told) Bollywood website played up one half-sentence from a one hour conversation: “Jaya Bachchan calls Happy New Year nonsensical,” the website said in quotation marks. Since the internet thrives on controversy, this soon went viral and Jaya was understandably upset. Why would she publicly call a film ‘nonsensical’ which had her own son in it? I thought I should rebut this, but rebut whom? It was now all over the place — so I issued a statement, which might sound rather a pompous thing to do, but I had no alternative. It went like this: “Without meaning to sound pretentious, a literary festival provides a forum for the exchange of ideas. If it’s a lively festival, as I believe Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest is, this exchange is laced with wit and humour.

And this is precisely what happened when Jaya Bachchan was in conversation with Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi. She enjoyed both these kinds of films, she said (as all those who heard the discussion would attest). An example she gave of the latter was of Amar, Akbar, Anthony, a film she said she enjoyed immensely, as much as she did Happy New Year. In fact, she said, she complimented her son Abhishek for his role, because it’s something she couldn’t have done herself. A literary festival is not made for sound bytes; it’s for thoughtful exposition of ideas. Those who take Jaya Bachchan’s remark out of context do a disservice to her, to our literary festival and to themselves.”

Unfortunately a lot of damage seems to have been done due to viral nature of media. I will admit though its only on ‘perception’ level because srk-bachchan relationship may come out stronger out of this.
The real loser to this deal has been Farah who gets stamped with ‘nonsensical’ again after TMK but then she deserves it and hopefully will learn from her mistakes and keep it simpler next time around.

Not really Pradip…..explanation was referring to Jaya B’s mutterings which were selectively picked up by the media and at the end of the day srk- bachchan will shrug it off and move on with their bonding if they wish to do so as none depends on other for survival.
Unfortunately it’s the word ‘nonsensical’ which has come to be associated with the movie quoted all over and the song ‘nonsense ki night’ has not helped too. Since this movie came immediately after TMK, Farah may have to face the brunt of the negativity associated with this movie at the end when dust settles down. I doubt she can get funding for a movie without a top notch star attached to her next project and its here the reputation will precede anything she does ahead.

The Shaukeens had poor start of 20% at the box office and did not pick up much in the evening. The business was very dull in the Eastern markets. The growth on Saturday will have to be excellent if the film is to come out with a respectable weekend.
Rang Rasiya had a very dull start and has little chance at the box office though the film did show better collections in the evening at some multiplexes. The film has managed to release on around 800 screens across India.
Roar – Tigers Of The Sunderbans and Super Nani could not make any headway at the box office and collected 8 crore nett and 2.25 crore nett respectively.
Happy New Year is a Super Hit and second biggest hit of 2014 as it held well in week two with a collections of 34 crore nett apprx. The film is heading for a final total in the 175-180 crore nett range. SUPER HIT

And this has been my point . it’s not as if this is some crazy way of doing things because it’s clearly not consistent/honest. Unfortunately your last line is part of the answer. I know you do not toe that line but trade usually judge the movie based on cost. I do agree Super hit is stretching it a bit. The movie will end up as a hit with around 95 crore distributor share. Bang Bang was a much much more costly movie (140 cr with P and A) and it did around 70 crore distributor share.
The movie has surely under performed from an expectation point of view , there is no doubt about it.

Shaukeens is more entertaining and enjoyable than HNY Akshay is just superb. At 47 he looks 10 years younger than SRK at 49. His 20 minute role leaves way more impact than 180 minute of Hamming in HNY
btw BOI is back to its tricks of regressing numbers of this movie. Have you noticed they have crusade against Akshay and Hrithik. There movies are initially underreported by 30% for Max impact. SRK an Salman movies are under reported only by 10% while Amir and Ajay by 5% . This seems to happen regardless of Distributer it is high time that bollywood creates an authentic boxoffice collection entity such as boxofficemojo.

Saw Club 60 .. What a surprise little Gem. Actually i never even heard about this movie before, Had no idea about its release year. I watched it on my flight to US, It takes time for me to chose this over other crappy Bollywood movies, but i am Glad of my choice .. will put more details later on, at this moment only i can say that this is must watch for all age groups. It has life lessons for everyone, not only 60+. Movie is very well directed and what a Great performance from raghubir Yadav. Actually this movie makes me wonder at two fronts : 1. How Superior actors like Raghubir Yadav are heavily underutilized 2. WOM movies still don’t work in India, otherwise how many small good movies went unnoticed ? After seeing movie, i took a quick look at its BO collection, its lifetime is under 42 Lakhs. What a shame !!! Indian audience at its worst taste.

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar took first place on Friday, though family moviegoers should drive Disney Animation’s Big Hero 6 to a weekend win.
After two days in limited release, Interstellar expanded to 3,561 locations and earned an estimated $17 million. That’s well below Inception’s $21.8 million debut, though it is at least roughly on par with Gravity’s $17.5 million start last year.
Interstellar’s audience was split evenly between men (52 percent) and women, and skewed much older (75 percent were at least 25 years of age). They awarded the movie a “B+” CinemaScore, which is in line with Inception.
Also of note: IMAX generated $4.6 million, or a whopping 27 percent of the total Friday number.
If Interstellar holds up like Gravity, it will end the weekend with $54 million. A more likely outcome is a performance similar to Skyfall, which opened around the same time in 2012: that pattern would put Interstellar at $49 million for the weekend.

Review: Ashutosh Gowariker’s Everest is bland and tacky
Ashutosh Gowariker’s Everest is made so tackily, it hurts, says Raja Sen.
The future of Indian television is, clearly and tragically, in the wrong hands.
The efforts made to “class up” our prime-time viewing are ambitious yet fundamentally flawed.
The right motion-picture directors are hopping aboard but they have so far refused to bring their storytelling finesse to the small screen.
Anurag Kashyap’s Yudh was an absolute debacle, a loony show that, while it featured a good cast, lacked originality and compelling characters.
And now comes Ashutosh Gowariker with Everest, a show with a potentially decent storyline and characters but one that is produced so tackily, it hurts.
Everest is unwatchably bad right from the get-go, a badly acted and awfully scripted show that hurts more than a daily soap simply because it pretends to be better than that.
It’s not.
Now the fundamental issue here is that there are so many options on television that, mediocre as the alternatives may be, the viewer isn’t prone to give something a chance unless it is compelling from the start.
The pilot episode is what lays the tone for the show’s narrative, what tells us what to expect and what sets everything up: in that context, the Everest premiere is sheer bilge.
Like I said, the story itself at the heart of it all has promise. We see an overachieving girl out in the mountains mounting a rescue; the other protagonist is a boy deathly afraid of heights after once having let a loved one plunge to his doom. There are, even on the most basic of storytelling levels, possibilities. But the execution is horrid.
Let us, for an excruciating moment, visit one scene: the girl goes and fetches the morning paper, her mother teases her for having woken up so early, to which she reminds her mother that her graduation ceremony is that evening.
Next up, the army-man dad who derides civilians and scowls at his paper.
The girl nervously tells him that she, a literature student, has topped the collegiate exams on a state level.
Good, he says unsmilingly.
She asks him if he’d come to her graduation ceremony, and — while mom and daughter wait with bated breath — he says he’ll see.
Cue jubilant daughter and ecstatic mom flashing her a thumbs up.
The only way this nonsense can lead to something good is if it is later revealed that he’s a kidnapper not a father, that the ladies have Stockholm Syndrome something fierce, and that the graduation ceremony is something wonderfully sinister.
But let’s not hold our breath (or keep our thumbs ready to indicate triumph).
What Gowariker will say is that the show will take time to settle in and that he hasn’t directed the first episode.
Kashyap did the same thing with Yudh.
But if they want to try and shake things up on the small screen, they really should get their hands dirty themselves, just like master directors Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, and David Fincher are doing out West. Treating television like a stepchild just shows you aren’t looking at things clearly enough.

Everest is not as bad as Sen’s review suggests. I have started watching it for the sake of viewing those majestic mountains, tall trees, the gurgling streams and also how trekkers start their journey. It is refreshing to watch something different from saas bahu crap.

The Shaukeens fared poorly on day one as it grossed around 3.50 crore nett. The start was slow but the problem was that it did not pick up much and the final collections came in similar to what they looked in the morning.
The better business has come in multiplexes outside the metros like in East Punjab and the Central belts with East and South being poor. Business in Uttar Pradesh was also not upto the mark as was the case with most single screens. There will be growth on Saturday but probably not the sort that the film needs to put up a respectable first weekend total.
Rang Rasiya also fared poorly as it collected around 60 lakh nett on day one though it have a better response in the evening at some multiplexes. Overall collections are too low for the film to go anywhere.

Happy New Year grossed around 1 crore nett on its third Friday. It was a 75-80% fall from last Friday as there was a major release like The Shaukeens. Nevertheless the film should show huge growth over the weekend like last week as the film has appreciation amongst the family audience and because The Shaukeens has not performed up to the mark.
The film should have weekend around the 4.50 crore nett mark with Mumbai and Delhi/UP being the best markets. Kick had grossed 8.25 crore nett in week three and Happy New Year is unlikely to reach that mark for its third week.
The film looks to be heading for around 60 crore nett business in Mumbai circuit and around 32 crore nett in Delhi/UP. in East Punjab it will do around 15 crore nett and will be the only circuit where it beats the business of Chennai Express. It will be Shahrukh Khan’s highest grosser ever in East Punjab.

In what could be considered a minor upset, Disney Animation’s Big Hero 6 took the top spot at the box office this weekend ahead of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar.
If Interstellar’s estimate holds up (and there’s a good chance it doesn’t) this will mark the fourth time that two movies opened above $50 million. In all four cases, an animated movie took first place over a live-action flick.
Playing at 3,761 theaters, Big Hero 6 opened to an estimated $56.2 million this weekend. That’s up 15 percent from fellow Disney Animation movie Wreck-It Ralph, which opened to $49 million around the same time in 2012. Big Hero 6 also had the second-highest animated opening of the year ahead of How to Train Your Dragon 2 ($49.5 million).
This is undeniably a strong start for Big Hero 6: it’s rare that an original animated movie opens to $50-million-plus. By promoting the unique, humorous robot Baymax, Disney managed to get huge turnout from family moviegoers (they represented 72 percent of attendance this weekend). Still, there was an assumption that Frozen’s phenomenal success had elevated the Disney Animation brand to a new level, and that didn’t exactly prove true this weekend.
With an “A” CinemaScore and strong reviews, Big Hero 6 should play well in the coming weeks. If it holds up like Wreck-It Ralph, it will end its run with over $215 million.
At 3,561 theaters, Interstellar opened to an estimated $50 million. Including two days in limited release, Interstellar has so far earned $52.15 million. The three-day opening is below Nolan’s Inception ($62.8 million), last year’s Gravity ($55.8 million), and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus ($51.1 million).
The movie earned $13.4 million from 368 IMAX theaters, which is ahead of recent November movies Skyfall ($12.75 million) and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($12.6 million). IMAX accounted for 26 percent of the overall weekend, which is an incredibly high percentage that’s indicative of some of the movie’s marketing challenges.
Christopher Nolan’s diehard fans showed up this weekend, and did so in the filmmaker’s preferred format (IMAX). Outside of that group, though, the movie didn’t really connect. Non-IMAX screens earned less than $37 million this weekend; compare that to recent mindbending sci-fi movie Lucy, which opened to $43.9 million without an IMAX run.
Why didn’t Interstellar connect more with average moviegoers? While it had some strong visuals, there wasn’t anything particularly memorable—at least, there was nothing on par with Inception’s folding city or spinning hallway. It also appeared to be light on action compared to Inception or last year’s Gravity. Add in mixed reviews (73 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and a publicity campaign that focused overwhelmingly on the science (to the point where this seemed like a homework assignment), and this wound up being a tough sell.
There’s a lot of talk about how the movie’s 169-minute runtime may have affected opening weekend. That argument doesn’t seem to hold much water, though. Audiences have consistently demonstrated in the past that they’re willing to sit through very lengthy movies—Nolan’s last three outings are all over 145 minutes long, and two of them debuted north of $155 million (yes, both of those do feature Batman).
It’s also unlikely that the runtime significantly limited showtimes: with weak holdovers, many theaters were able to run Interstellar on more than one screen. In other words, supply equaled demand here.
Interstellar’s saving grace could be its longevity. The audience was split evenly between men (52 percent) and women, and skewed much older (75 percent over the age of 25); that’s the kind of crowd that doesn’t necessarily rush out on opening weekend.
Word-of-mouth on it could help as well. While it’s decidedly mixed (“B+” CinemaScore), there does seem to be a certain “must-see” quality to it—both to experience the visuals on the big screen and to join in the conversation.
If Interstellar holds up as well as Skyfall—which opened around the same time in 2012—it will wrap up with over $170 million.

i think this film will hold really well. some of the people might’ve been turned off because it may be be a little too ‘scientific-y’…but nolan has done an excellent job of instilling some drama/emotion/thrills/amazing visuals in this movie.
i saw this movie on ‘regular’ IMAX and i absolutely loved it. i wanted to see it in ‘true’ IMAX but tickets were sold out both friday and saturday. I will watch it again (this time in ‘true’ IMAX) this coming weekend.
this movie does an excellent job on making us think of all the ‘what ifs’ and pushes our minds and imagination into another realm of possibilities…one of the best sci-fi movies. the only drawback for me was mcconaughey…thought the moment was too big for him and he failed to deliver at key moments. probably could only see clooney or denzel pulling this ‘kind’ of movie off…it is not an easy role to pull off…hell this is not an easy movie to make..but nolan dares to imagine and then actually has the balls to make it into ‘his’ reality. i found myself literally wide-eyed, jaw-dropped on numerous occasions throughout the movie. amazing job.

The 2.50 crore nett plus difference is mainly from the South India markets of Nizam/Andhra, Mysore and Tamil Nadu/Kerala. The two week business of Happy New Year is 168.50 crore nett approx while Chennai Express grossed 184 crore nett including its paid previews.

Happy New Year has grossed around 173 crore nett in seventeen days as it grossed around 4.50 crore nett over its third weekend. The film again collected very well on Saturday and Sunday at multiplexes all over.
The business of the films stands at eighth place on the all time list and should finish in sixth places as it is likely to cross Krrish 3 (175 crore nett) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (178 crore nett). The fifth placed film is Ek Tha Tiger at 186 crore nett but Happy New Year will stay below that figure.
Till date the film has grossed over 60 crore nett in Mumbai and over 31 crore nett in Delhi/UP. The final collections for Chennai Express in these circuits was 68 crore nett and 39 crore nett respectively. In East Punjab it has grossed 15 crore nett while the business for Chennai Express was 14.40 crore nett.

Even 4.5 crore weekends are being celebrated. You’ve got to be a special kind of person to find some positives even at this stage!
There is no “real” hold here. A film that goes from a 135 crore first week to 34 crore 2nd week and 7 crore 3rd week is not really holding well. The producers trends are even more pronounced as the gap in week 1 is much bigger than week 2 and 3, so the trend looks even worse.
The film’s not been rejected that’s for sure, but it’s basically struggled from first Monday onwards. I’d call it below average to average, of course trade/producers will call it a hit of sorts.
To start so well and end up folding short of ETT is a disappointment. In fact K3 did “better” because it had a 123 cr first week but got to a near equivalent total.
So BB and HNY had the huge holiday edge and made nothing of it. Holidays make a difference, but the basics of economics always work in the end, the product is the most important thing. Singham 140 cr, BB 150 cr and HNY 180 cr…whereas Kick did not even start on a holiday (it got it advantages “later”) and blew all of them out of the water by a huge distance. D3 did not even start on a holiday too, it had to wait 5 days.

Saurabh, unfortunately, no I don’t really know of any decent Malayalam film reviewers writing in English. I typically read as many as I can and get a feel for the film that way. Paresh Palicha does seem to come closest to flagging the films I usually enjoy, but his writing tone is quite off-puttlingly condescending.
All said, this does look quite good. Sounds like Amal Neerad has come out of his slump, and is good to hear about a decent Fahad role again after his recent quiet period.

CG: Unlike me If you haven’t yet had the misfortune of reading Paresh Palicha’s review of Varsham, you should avoid it with a bargepole until you see the film- the guy has stupidly given out a huge spoiler in his review (or atleast that is what I feel because no other review has “revealed” that plot point. And while I don’t follow the language, I thought the trailer of the film also never mentioned it). I really want to watch Varsham as well.
You are right on Fahadh that he has had a bit of a slump this year (though check out his God’s Own Country, one of the better films this year). He has a romantic-drama with the very talented Radhika Apte (where was she all these days?! I really liked her in Shor in the City) called “Haram” coming up next. Let’s see. I really hope he gets a “defining” sort of a role soon; perhaps he needs to work with a Tamil or a Bollywood director now (I mean let’s face it, as much as I enjoy these new Malayalam films and in some ways prefer them to the current Bollywood scene, as far as top-notch filmmaking is concerned Bollywood is ahead by some miles as of now. I know there are folks like Shaji Karun and Adoor, but you get my point! IQuite often I end up feeling that Fahadh was better than the film). But interestingly, come to think of it one of Fahadh’s greatest strengths- his refusal to be typecasted, to be boxed into a category- might also become a bit of a weakness in the sense that he hasn’t developed a “signature” (I don’t even see him repeating something minor like a body gesture). To put simply, he is a star without a star-signature (and someone needs to do a profile-piece on the guy soon. I wish Caravan or even Outlook does a write-up on him though chances of anything like this in the near future) and that might come in the way of him getting those “dramatic parts” (notice how he still takes up supporting parts- Bangalore Days, Immanuel- provided that it is well-written and has no qualms featuring in multistarrers…not just in Iyobinte, but also something like God’s Own Country and Amen. Typically his films quite often have well-etched female roles sometimes even to the extent that the actresses get the scene-stealing parts or the “more’ central parts- Artist, Akam, Annayum Rasoolum, 22 Female Kottayam, heck even stuff like Natholi Oru Cheriya and N24 Kaatham). I mean even when he does go for a more central part, it is more often than not a “smaller film” (even his performance is bereft of those typical histrionics associated with that sort of a role, he really underplays things). He should perhaps cut down on the number of films and become more ruthless while selecting roles. And really should look towards working in even more “authentic films” (Iyobinte, from the looks of it, seems to be that kind of film though it’s ofcourse an ensemble one) though he should continue to do these “middle-cinema’ projects (Annayum, NK24, Artist) as well. Perhaps find the right balance. I wish Rathnam would have taken him instead of Dulquer.
While I am yet to see Njan Steve Lopez (not sure why they haven’t yet released the DVD yet), Njan and Swapaanam (I have had this with me for quite sometime now, but haven’t got around to it), the Malayalam film I have liked most this year is “Munnariyippu”. It’s a hard film to like in the first viewing- it’s simply not very accessible plot-wise- but it’s also the sort of film you want to revisit in a jiffy. The Mammootty performance is a very interesting one- it is “opaque” by design, he doesn’t give you an inch as far as knowing the motivation of his characters is concerned, in other words the performance is an inaccessible as the film is and yet it draws you in (this sounds contradictory I know). It’s a very difficult performance and is the performance of the year as far as I am concerned). I also thought this is far and away the most impressive Malayalm film I have seen as far “staging” the scenes are concerned (with the exception of Kutty Srank). The background score by Bijbal is arresting. And the female lead, Aparna Gopinath, is a real find- for much of the running she is the one who has the more “active” part. I think Munnariyippu will very easily make my year-end best-of-Indian-cinema list (with the Mammootty performance as the personal favourite of the year closely followed by Kangana in Queen and Sanjay Mishra in Ankhon Dekhi).
Another film I am waiting for is Ennu Ninte Moideen. Looks really interesting; I think Prithvi can be really effective when used well, but more importantly the film has Parvathy Menon who is quite simply one of the best young talents in the entire country (I wait for the day when she gets cast opposite Fahadh)

Thanks for the thoughts on Munariyippu- sounds like one of the more offbeat Ranjith movies. Will look out for this. If you liked this, try to get hold of Kaiyoppu- another somewhat opaque Ranjith movie with a brilliant Mammootty performance.
Haven’t got around to watching God’s Own Country yet even though I have the DVD so will catch that next. Am completely with you on Fahadh’s career- part of the reason he’s so interesting I suspect is that one is never sure what to expect from his movies since he mixes it up so much.

He further said that the ultimate goal is to have a team play for India in the World Cup and that’s why he got involved with ISL, adding, “There is a huge amount of sporting talent in India and it is about time they are given their due. These leagues are only going to bring out even more (fresh) talent.”
Abhishek is also planning to start a sports company of his own, and it is said that it was Shah Rukh Khan who pushed him to the idea. In fact, SRK said that he suggested Abhishek to visit Venky Mysore, CEO, Kolkata Knight Riders and Red Chillies, to learn about managing a sports company.

While film-maker Aditya Chopra’s Dhoom franchise has had stars like Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan in its earlier renditions, multiple other big names are likely to join the film’s cast in the next instalment. Salman Khan and Aryan Khan are likely to feature in Dhoom.
Aryan Khan: Shah Rukh’s son is studying at the Sevenoaks School in UK. Amitabh Bachchan’s granddaughter Navya Naveli reportedly also studies there.
Reportedly, Salman Khan will play a villain in the next instalment of the film. Also, there’s speculation that Shah Rukh Khan might be on board soon. An online portal recently quoted him saying that he is keen to be part of the franchise. “If I get an opportunity, I would love to do it (DHOOM 4). I find it very cool (sic),” Shah Rukh was quoted as saying.
But interestingly, apart from big names like Salman and Shah Rukh, the future instalments of Dhoom might also mark SRK’s son, Aryan Khan’s, Bollywood debut. “Aditya is planning to launch Aryan with Dhoom 6, which is likely to be co-produced by SRK,” says a source. But, we have been told that work on the film will take a few years. “Since Shah Rukh is very particular about his kids’ education, the film is likely to take off when Aryan turns 21 (he will turn 17 tomorrow — November 13) and he is done with his studies,” adds the source. BOI’s reporting on HNY would have you think this is running to packed houses in week 3. But the reality is its 7-8 crore in week 3 will compare unfavourably to many films’ week 3. 3 Idiots scored a monstrous 30 crore all those years ago. YJHD over 20 crore. Dabangg/CE/Barfi/BMB/RR/Ghajini all between 15-18 crore.
The acid test for most big films still remain how they do in week 2 or week 3. Those are the weeks where you put up the truly big totals. Week 1 MOST big films will score heavily.
It’s a trivial discussion talking about week 3 if the film is making 7-8 crore. That’s how much 3 Idiots was making in week 5! But BOI gives us a daily update anyway, like it’s never happened before and I am sure the films mentioned above did not get this level coverage!

plus when big films are celebrated for going from 75 lakhs on a Fri to 1.25 crores or something on a Saturday in their third weekend or whatever any performance would be ‘creditable’ as long as the film made something more than zero! So you could have a film do Rs 10 and then go to Rs 70 the next day and BOI would say ‘great jump’!

I don’t know about the support part, but I still feel they are the most consistent site when it comes to ‘number’ reporting and this is attested by the fact that Satyam regulary quotes them on this blog as a box-office update and not some other random ‘box-office capsule’ and ‘box office India’ or even a ‘Bollywood Hungama’ who basically are mouth pieces for their stars / producers.
As I had stated sometime earlier, the commentary definitely displays a bias towards a particular star/stars esp when they throw in their two cents and try to reason it out ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ with their readers….
Initially they were flattish on HNY but midway they have tried to altered their course to make it bit of a softer landing for the movie wrt final verdict. It is pretty visible SRK and team went on the defensive after the first few days and sort of took HR route of amplifications / sometime baloney in order to manage the media including TV channels to get a ‘perceptive’ hit/ acceptance.
Bottom-line is a fully loaded Diwali bonanza should at the least do 250 cr in today’s market and I feel sorry for the smaller movies that don’t even get a chance on these big ‘movie going dates’ . I continue to feel we the audience are the bigger losers on these days……
Lastly on box office, I still think the KRK types make sense when he says – Collections are 4trade ppl only. I can’t understand why r #2RsPpl fighting over collections of #HappyNewYear? They shud watch film n enjoy.

Actually that’s not true.. I quote whatever’s available.. usually someone or the other puts up the producer numbers. Sometimes people do this for BOI. IBOS used to do this, they stopped doing so a long time ago or I would have put these up too. Sometimes I put up NBOC. The point is that once you put up the producer numbers and then the BOI ones there’s no point in putting up others unless there’s something drastically different. But if no one quoted the producer numbers I’d put them up. If someone did BOI regularly I wouldn’t put these up either. for me none of this is about what the truth regarding a given film is. It’s simply what’s out there and one can make sense of it (or not) as one likes. But the idea that BOI is more consistent or more reliable or whatever is one I flatly reject. Even restricting oneself to the commentary it’s contradictory to suggest that a source is completely honest on the numbers but then completely dishonest on the commentary! And it’s not just HNY. I’ve seen it in every single case. And it’s not just about the gross number. It’s also about selecting examples that are decontextualized, that serve a larger narrative and so forth. A lot of their centers are just pulled out of a hat. Taran used to do this when he reported some of the numbers. Barring a few of the very major cities the other centers were often different. So if you had a film doing very well in Maharashtra and ok in N India you could put up more centers from the former. The overall picture would suddenly look better. Similarly when BOI want to say a film is doing very well they find the example to suit the narrative. It might be one center in one case but a different one in another. All of these guys have the ethics of crooks as far as I’m concerned. If they happen to be closer to the truth on some occasions that’s not by design! Even in these 2014 lists they’ve put up the very same absurdity obtains that I was complaining about even a decade ago. Somehow smaller films find it harder to become hits to super-hits or whatever. The biggest films just because they get the biggest grosses are also called hits or blockbusters when presumably they also have the highest costs. Somehow one is supposed to believe that the smaller films actually have heavier production and/or distribution costs! Which is what some of those ratings would indicate. This doesn’t make any sense. So it’s not one thing or the other. The entire system of reporting numbers is deeply dishonest in India no matter who’s doing it. Sure, you can usually tell looking at everything how well or not a film has done relative to contemporary standards. But anything more is a fantasy.

Happy New Year has emerged the second biggest hit of the year after Kick. The film has managed to sustain in weeks two and three adter it had dropped in the weekdays in most circuits outside Mumbai. Kick remains the only blockbuster of the year with only PK left to challenge it now.
The business of in terms of nett and share will beat last years Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Krrish 3 but not Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express. Its been disappointing in terms of big hits as last year there were more bigger hits.
The first ten months have accumulated 2250 crore nett and the figure for last year was 2800 crore nett. Its looking a stiff ask to beat last years number unless somehow PK gets 3.5 crore people to the theatres which has not happened in the last 12 years. In other ‘hit’ news, Rohit Sharma scored 264 (!!) in a 50 over international game…beating Sehwag’s 219!
I don’t watch cricket anymore but this is beyond ridiculous. Pretty soon there will be a triple ton in ODIs.
It needs to be noted that Indian pitches have contributed to all 4 double tons in ODIs, of which Rohit Sharma now has 2! But poor bowling and batting conditions don’t explain this exponential rise in batting records.
For the record, it took cricket teams 3.5 years to score as much as 264 since the beginning of ODIs.
I still believe bowlers are contributing to batting records by not swinging the ball as much (if at all) and captains contribute by setting way too much defensive fields, losing any chance of early edges/wickets.
Most bowlers seem to have accepted this fate, which only seems to perpetuate further because of their own limiting beliefs.
Having said all of this, test cricket, will always be the real deal. Always!

@munna the koimoi article is hilarious. The kind of idiotic algorithms (I just insulted the word algorithm there) these people put up would be nauseating if not for the fact that they provide unintentional entertainment.
So, get this: If there’s a film that crosses 100 crores, you get 100 points. If a film crosses 200 crores you get 200 points. If your film makes 199.99 crores, you get…100 points! Makes sense? Of course it does. This, when the reported numbers are all over the place and can’t be trusted to begin with.
Then there’s the overseas number that doesn’t depend on any particular gross. Just the # of films in a top 10 list is enough to get 50 points! Nevermind the ratio of people watching films in the overseas market to the Indian domestic scenario, this just has to be put in to favor one particular star!
Who pays these guys is becoming crystal clear. The fact that some people will still fall for these shenanigans is the saddest part of the whole exercise…

The most basic mathematical analysis of Box Office prowess would follow the cricket formula: look at the averages.
The average gross for a star over a 3-4 year window, which would be the cumulative gross divided by the number of films.
Of course that’s a very basic metric. This doesn’t take into account the timing of the release (festive season or not) or the marketing budget for the film, the relative popularity of co-stars etc. This is in line with cricket where a batsman’s record doesn’t take into account the strength of the opposition, the pitches etc. So the method isn’t perfect at all…just a basic indicator of current form.
But to come up with these power indices without an iota of thought is stupidity of the highest order! Actually, it’s not just stupid, it’s agenda-driven as well…
