  1. RIP
Ek Duje Ke Liye is my all time favorite…

    • Have a great weakness for the movie myself except for the grotesque ending.

      • agree about the ending, but the- har nazar ko salaam song by Lata Mangeshkar still gives me Goosebumps.
KamalHasan in my view is the best actor after Bachchan followed by Naseerudin.

      • 1. Amitabh
        2.Kamal Hasan
        4.Sanjeev Kumar
        5.Balraj Dahani
        6.Dilip Kumar
        7.Manoj Bajpayee
        10.Pareh Rawal

        • I think Om Puri is highly over rated.
Aside – I saw Dev again recently . I for some reasons had remembered it to be highly unfair, but on the second watch found it quite balanced ( as balanced as one can expect from Nilhani a known leftie..lol)
Having Om Puri play AB’s senior did not work for me as he looks much younger

      • Somehow, couldn’t enjoy EDKL. May be because I didn’t like Kamalhassan then. Never revisited because of the grotesque ending. Songs were pretty good.

  2. RIP

  3. RIP.

Nagesh – some ways owes to KB
Kamal – mainly owes to KB
Rajini – only owes to KB

    Star maker.
    Ladies Man ( https://baradwajrangan.wordpress.com/2014/12/24/a-ladies-man/ )

  4. KB touch:

  5. Another interesting incident was when Ek Duuje Ke Liye was premiered in Bombay. KB did not come for the premiere. I was there at Roxy Cinema. The cream of the Bombay film industry had come — Raj Kapoor, Manmohan Desai, Yash Chopra.

After the movie ended, there was a standing ovation. Manmohan Desai stood on his seat, clapped and whistled!

Afterwards there was a party at the Oberoi Hotel. Raj Kapoor was seated at a table having a drink. One of the men seated at his table came and asked me if KB was around. I said no and introduced myself as his assistant.

He took me to Raj Kapoor’s table where Raj Kapoor was all in praise of the movie. He appreciated even the minute details of the picture and praised KB sky high. I was so happy.

Then came the bomb — he was totally against the tragic climax of the film!

He said, “Such a brilliant film but why the tragedy?” He went on and on about it.

It was late at night but I had to convey Raj Kapoor’s observation to KB. I went out of the hotel, found an STD booth and called KB sir. I apologised for the late call and told him what Raj Kapoor had said.

KB coolly answered, “Suresh, what Raj Kapoor felt is very correct. For that matter, all the audience will have the same feeling — why the tragedy? But it is that feeling that will be the reason for the film’s success.

The tragedy will be key reason for the success! Wow! What an observation!

The next day, when the film was released, it was exactly the tragedy that made people come again and again to the theatres, making it an all time classic.

    • Despite its blockbuster status, both Kamal and KB wanted to correct the climax and they made another blockbuster, Punnagai Mannan, where a couple who attempted suicide but survived get into a relationship. All the songs and background score from Illaiyaraja are classics.

      • Punnagai Mannan is a rather enjoyable film but ultimately not as good as Ek Duje ke liye (or Swathi Muthyam). The Chaplinesque double was also unnecessary. Do love enna sat ham intha neram.

  6. Chaplin Chellapa – Sri vidya relationship is a favorite, those portions are a counterpoint to Kamal-Revathy, it’s been KB forte to concoct parallel relationships, tragic and light, old and youth. Not his strongest, he has made 100 films, PM nor ETKL will make my top 10.
