  1. PK Holds All Time Records In Seven Circuits
    Friday 02 January 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

PK has become the highest grosser in the following circuits after two weeks.

    Mumbai
    Delhi / UP
    East Punjab
    CP Berar
    CI
    Mysore
    West Bengal

The circuits where record figures are still to be reached are Rajasthan, Nizam /Andhra, Tamil Nadu / Kerala, Bihar, Assam and Orissa. Rajasthan is not a record due to changes in entertainment tax but will set new record in the next week. Nizam /Andhra is on verge of record while Assam and Orissa should also reach in time. Bihar and Tamil Nadu / Kerala are likely to miss out.

The film has set new benchmark in CI as it has become first film to cross 10 crore nett. Other benchmarks that are likely to be achieved is 100 crore nett in Mumbai, 60 crore nett in Delhi/UP, 30 crore nett in East Punjab, 15 crore nett in CP Berar, 20 crore nett in Mysore and 15 crore nett in West Bengal. These will all be firsts.

  2. New Releases Dull PK Remains Strong
    Friday 02 January 2015 14.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The two new releases Mumbai Can Dance Saalaa and Take It Easy opened to very dull collections of 0-5%. It continues the tradition of the first releases of the year being duds. You have to go back to the 80’s when any of the first releases of the year did well.

PK has continued its strong run into the third week and looking at the collections in the morning show of the third Friday it seems that the film will set a new record for third week collections and hit the 300 crore nett mark on Monday with an outside chance of getting there on by the end of business on Sunday.

Ugly released last week managed to hold steady on the weekdays as the four weekday business was similar to the weekend but with collections of just 3 crore nett apprx in week one its still a huge flop.

  3. PK Grosses 276 Crore Nett In Two Weeks
    Friday 02 January 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

PK grossed a record 94.50 crore nett in week two taking its two week business to 276 crore nett. The second week business was around 30 crore nett higher that the previous record holder Dhoom 2. The film fell a little short of 100 crore nett in week two which would have been the sort of club that very few films will join. The film is looking to cross 300 crore nett before the end of the third week.

The second week collections were the highest ever in all circuits of India. The drop in week two was 48% with Delhi/UP and East Punjab showing an even better hold as collections dropped a little over 40%.The collections in Mumbai have crossed 90 crore nett.

The records will be more difficult to come by now. It can get a new third week record which stands at a little over 30 crore nett but it will difficult to beat this record by the margin it achieved the second week record. .

the same thing was said after 3I. You never know what can happen in 3 years (much less 10 !). Opening week can def. be broken and if a movie can open to 200 CR then they might squeeze by 320 or whatever final number for PK but yeah, don’t see any movie really beating PKs number unless Aamir teams up with Hirani again (which wouldn’t be anytime soon since HIrani has Sanjay bio and the next Munnabhai on his plate).

          Like

        • Aamir certainly could.. he has the script sense to be able to do it. It could either be the Ghajini model where a roaring initial (beginning on day 1) and then good trending does it or else the Hirani thing (though Hirani is alone in this respect). But in any case when a guy does it with Ghajini, 3I, PK (even if one doesn’t want to include D3 on trending ground) and then not to forget all the equally impressive trending patterns on films ranging from RDB to TZP (the total gross isn’t everything.. it’s about the maximum that can be done relative to a genre.. of course something like RDB in today’s money would be enormous, I’ve always insisted on this and even today I think that extraordinary as these huge grosses are one shouldn’t lose site of those older achievements) he’s much more likely to do so again. by the same token his peers haven’t come close to this overall achievement EVEN when they have had the biggest starts. And so there’s no real debate here.

Barjatya is one of the rare directors whose vision resonates with the want of the audience.

            Like

          • actually other than on HAHK (and to an extent MPK where it did very well given that it had no stars and which in today’s money would be a high amount) Barjatya has never had that sort of stratospheric grosser. HSSH came down after a good initial, Vivaah had great trending in the smaller markets, had a good gross but not a massive one, MPKDH also tanked after a good initial. With Salman (who also has a very different image now) he’d get the initial but then he’d need enough sustaining power in a genre that isn’t otherwise on the right side of the multiplex audience. Why? Because Barjatya is simply too cheesy for this. He could make it up with a certain family audience that watches soaps regularly on TV but whether that audience too will accept that level of cheese in a movie remains to be seen. One has to think that this genre could not open in a massive way on day 1 so again this would be more about trending. Again all of this doesn’t mean this cannot happen. Certainly you’d have a star and a director who’d have to be taken seriously but it’s nowhere close to the ‘done’ deal some here have been presenting it as. for that you need a director who has much better credentials in the recent past and also a star who too has the same in that sort of genre.

          • Aren’t you missing a little something called :Hum aapke hain Koun?

            Like

          • sorry meant to say HAHK in that first line. Made that correction. But yeah that’s precisely my point. HAHK was 20 years ago and nothing since by him remotely approaches those benchmarks (including with HSSH at a time when Salman was going through a good phase.. not like today but then HSSH was one of the biggest releases of its time.. the first Barjatya post-HAHK). And now you add to that fact that Salman is one of the hottest stars around in a completely different genre. A big one is certainly possible here but it cannot be taken at face value. We don’t expect huge hits from directors who’ve done this two decades ago unless there’s also strong evidence in the recent past. Again I’m making a clear distinction here. This combo would have to be taken seriously but because in many ways it would be on the wrong side of the multiplex audiences it would have to be that much better as a film to really show some very strong trending. All of this simply cannot be assumed. It’s like saying Aditya Chopra made DDLJ 20 years ago. But neither Mohabbatein nor RNBDJ lived up to the box office tale of that film which was itself very far from HAHK as a grosser. And Aditya Chopra still isn’t on the wrong side of his audiences in some of those more basic ways. Weren’t people in fact saying some of these things when Aditya Chopra and SRK got together after so long? The film didn’t even match Ghajini in any sense.

            Like

          • Barjatya-Salman combo CAN deliver a massive or even a super massive hit. There is one caveat. Sooraj Barjatya can stay true to his genre but has to cater to today’s audience’s sensibilities. The audience has moved on- past the talking pets and Raam Laxman music. Barjatya couldn’t do it with MPKDH and to an extent with HSSH. Also Salman fans today are a different group than HAHK days.
So, yes- it’s a possibility and an interesting possibility . But,Barjatya HAS to reinvent himself. Salman can get his fans to the theatre but the film has to be such that they would come back again and again and also interest non-Salman fans.

          • Bharjatya is totally dated, so late 80s-early 90s. Adi-KJo usurped his space with the NRI Romances of the late 90s early 2000s. Further on, the Romance genre was given a quite burial with the advent of South Masala, New age multiplexism and Hirani-Aamir socially relevant offerings. I get a sense that Sallu gave a nod to Sooraj as a favor, something he has done with this brothers/brother-in-law etc. Unless Sooraj has something totally out of the box, the movie would have to rely hugely on the Sallu persona. There is a finite limit to how much that persona can deliver.

This is the PK season in films and I thought as good as a time as any to mention how I think that Raju Hirani is as close to a genius as you can get in mainstream Indian cinema in any language. His insights into human behaviour , his keen sense of observation, his unique, quirky and original sense of humour and his innate goodness of heart and love for humanity marks him out as a once-in-a -century kind of artiste. It is a combination of these qualities that makes him connect with audiences in small towns as well as urban metros, to 8 year old kids as sixty-year old elder men and women. It is the universality, honesty and humanity of hsi vision that touches you. So when someone tries to find faults with any of his scenes I know it si some shortcomings in us , in not being able to perceive his vision. I think, I am fortunate to have got a sense of where he is coming from in most of his apparently absurd or less-than-perfect scenes.

Take the vacuum cleaner delivery scene in 3 Idiots. Many have called it stupid and cheesy. Exactly the opposite I say.

I have always considered that to be one of the many masterstrokes that Hirani and Abhijat Joshi added to the original rich material of Chetan Bhagat. For nothing is Abhijat Joshi the highest paid writer in Bollywood and Hirani is the acknowledged master of Indian commercial cinema. Because their imaginative leaps are grounded in reality and are used to achieve subtle artistic goals.

To start with the child birth facilitated by a vacuum device is perfectly scientific. Let me quote :
“Ventouse is a vacuum device used to assist the delivery of a baby when the second stage of labour has not progressed adequately. It is an alternative to a forceps delivery and caesarean section. It cannot be used when the baby is in the breech position or for premature births. This technique is also called vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery or vacuum extraction (VE).”

“The woman is placed in the lithotomy position and assists throughout the process by pushing. A suction cup is placed onto the head of the baby and the suction draws the skin from the scalp into the cup. Correct placement of the cup directly over the flexion point, about 3 cm anterior from the occipital (posterior) fontanelle, is critical to the success of a VE.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventouse

“Your practitioner applies a flexible, rounded cup to your baby’s head in the birth canal. The cup is connected to an electric suction pump or a small handheld pump that creates vacuum pressure to hold the cup securely to the baby’s head. You’ll be asked to push while the doctor gently pulls on a handle attached to the cup, to help move your baby down and out of the birth canal.”

    http://www.babycenter.com/0_assisted-vaginal-delivery_1451360.bc

Now let us examine the beauty of this script device. Rancho has always been espousing the need for innovation, the need to learn how to use knowledge practically. The director had to demonstrate at some point Rancho a walking the talk, showing his knack for innovation, his ability to use knowledge of science and technology in everyday situations. We have had a glimpse of it when he made the seniors piss on a live electric wire with hilarious effect. This had to be one notch higher. Something the audience won’t expect. I have asked my friends from IIT if they had to think a situation to demonstrate how to use tech funda in a everyday situation, to be used in the film, what would they come up with. Needless to add, no one could think of this.

But it was not just the unexpectedness of it. We have seen Ranch in his male binding avatar with his two friends, Farhan and Raju. Here was a chance to reveal the feminine side of him.
To show how he could empathize with women, be involved with an essentially women’s problem, and come out a winner. It was a unique way of letting him go up in Pia’s esteem and create another kind of bonding between them. And also equally importantly, it was a way of winning the gratitude of Virus and winning him over forever., both by saving his daughter and demonstrating his grasp of technology.

All these are subtle strands of script writing that t only the masters grasp and can execute.

Salman – Barhatya can do it. But in my book the odds are less. After HAHK he has revealed his chinks, which are aplenty. It si not easy to retain the same connect with the audience as you did 20 years back, unless you have shown the kind of consistency that a Raj Kapoor or Ray did. But at the end of the day, thsi is the best suite that Salman has in his deck. Baarangi Bhaijan , shuddhi et can e good but at the Kick kind of level, nothing more.

  7. My 2 Cents on undermining Aamir’s boxoffice pull…

    1. Aamir manufactures a blockbuster

Well that is Brand Aamir. People end up spending 260 crore on Dhoom3 for 2 things…Dhoom brand and Aamir Khan..else it was riding on Victor Acharya..the director of Tashan. Every project with actors name lends credibility. This is the fact that has gotten him to take over US.

    Why US?

A key index to US popularity is the great influx of H1b visa IT professionals, Indian Students..who back in late 90s and 2000s had already grown fond of likes of Lagaan, DCH etc. This market knows what to expect from which actor. This is where the original first gen and 2nd gen desis (ABCDs) have followed suite and are supporting new movies.

No one is stopping other actors to spend time on script and make a worthwhile movie. I cannot expect from Salman to do the same but SRK can definitely do it.

The combination of Aamir and RH has proved the best and definitely it will be an undue pressure now on RH with Ranbeer Kapoor in the lead for the next.

Well going by just numbers…i think he needn’t prove anything to anyone now.

I am not into predictions normally: But I will stick my neck out on these two:

    1. The Hirani-Ranbir Dutt biopic is going to be a blockbuster. Reasons? It is one hell of a life..Hindu father-Muslim mother, mother dies of cancer, so does wife, drug addiction, young daugter, getting entangled with terrorists, arms concealment, prison, two more marriages, playing icoinc character like Munnabhai, prison sojurn…even the writer of the biggest pup fiction could not make it more dramatic. An actor like Ranbir who can be so uber cool from Wake up Sid to Rajneeti to Barfi…under the baton of Hirani can create a symphony of emotions powerful enough to move a stone.

    3. Amir and Hirani are not going to do another film anytime soon. Aamir can certainly do smaller and hugely successful films with younger directors. But his next shot out of the park has to be a sci-fi film with Shankar. Reason: Ra-One was a total misfire. But there is one big scifi film in Hindi waiting to be made…and the only one who can make it is Shankar. Sharukh missed the chance of his life in letting Robot go..and like many times in the past Shahrukh’s loss is Aamir’s gain. And the only thing that could go against Shankr, his excesses and his gaps in connecting with the northern audiences, can be bridged by Aamir’s script sense and involvement. If he could do that with Gowarikar, Amol Gupte, Rakesh Mehra, Murugudoss, Anusha rizvi and Abhinay Deo .. he can surely do it with Shankar.

  10. PK restores faith in Bollywood audience. When utter garbage movies like Kick and HNY were the highest grossers of the year, you wonder are audience of Hindi cinema brain dead .
The movies were so bad. Kick was a atrocious rehash of Dhoom 2 and Jugnu. HNY was bankrupt man utterly boring version of Oceans 13 which itself was terrible. I have seen some bad movies in the last five years but these two take the cake. if you go purely on entertainment value these two were pathetic Actually even a Bang Bang was more entertaining . PK however is in a totally different stratosphere. It is a pity it did not collect 100 crore in second week due to some fanatics banning an cold wave.
This record will be broken in 2019 by Christmas release by Raju Hirani starring RK and HRO a homage to inception of Google

PK has touched the 500 crore mark worldwide in two weeks making it the second film after Dhoom 3 to cross 500 crore. The film has grossed 368 crore (Gross) in India and 130 crore in Overseas in two weeks.

The film is looking to be the first film to go over 600 crore mark worldwide. It is already the record grosser in India though overseas it has a long way to go catch the $31.5 million total of Dhoom 2. The film has phenomenaly well in US/Canada and Australia but other markets are not so strong especially Gulf where it may not even be the biggest of the year. United Kingdom, Pakistan and Nepal are below record levels.

Still the film should just about make it above 600 crore worldwide as around $26 million in Overseas will be enough and it should reach that at least.

PK grossed around 6.25 crore nett on its third Friday taking its total to over 283 crore nett. The film should hit the 300 crore nett mark before the end of business on Sunday.

There is a bigger drop in the third week than the second week as the third Friday has dropped around 56% from the previous one while the second Friday had dropped 45%. As the collections are lower there is a chance of higher jumps on weekdays so a 25 crore nett third weekend is a possibility and with that a third week record will be assured.

Aamir has done some crazy stuff at BO since last few years. And in last 2 years he probaby will end up close to 1200 crores combined gross worldwide in just 2 movies. Plus he will be having top 2 grossers in India and top 3 grossers worldwide (PK will cross 25 million at least). Also if PK manages 640 crores gross worldwide it will be first to 100 million dollars gross world wide. I think first for an Indian movie.
Any other star and their fans along with media would have used loudest of speakers and screamed out loud with slogans of Badshah, God and what not. But this guy is quitely watching the show and taking the treatment of a step brother or son. Well his guts are hated by many. He is making job tougher for others. First he used to take lot of critical acclaim and he was hated for trying to raise the bar with quality, now he has been doing the same with BO and setting the benchmark for others to catch up. Officials regard reports of Pakistan-based ARY (Abdul Rehman Yakub) television channel being associated with a function connected with the promotion of the film PK in Dubai as “unfortunate”, because of that company’s perceived links with terror groups as well as with the state agency in Pakistan, which is the primary sponsor of such groups on the sub-continent, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). Its founder A.R. Yakub was an associate of Iqbal Mirchi, who was wanted for the 1993 Mumbai blasts and was placed in the Specially Designated Terrorist list by the UN, the UK and the US despite his linkages with the Pakistan establishment. The channel sought entry into India in 2007 through an attempted partnership with an Indian company, which ran a Punjabi channel as well as a Gujarati channel. Their plan was to set up an “ARY Just for India” channel. However, intelligence inputs from R&AW about some of the promoters of this channel led to permission being refused. However, officials say that entry into the Indian market continues to be a high priority for the channel, and that it is actively searching for partners which would enable this.

Entry into the film industry would be a plus for a Pakistan-based company eager to expand the reach of its patrons into locations in India. However, as yet, no concrete evidence has emerged of a business link between the producers of PK and ARY, barring a function in Dubai reportedly attended by both sides. A BJP leader, Subramanian Swamy, has called for an investigation into the funding of the film, which hopefully will reveal more details than what is presently available. An official claimed that the channel “appears to have used the tax haven route to make investments in India”, principally in Hyderabad and Mumbai.

ARY’s affiliate in the UK, ARY Digital UK, found itself under investigation by authorities in London during 2004-05 on suspicion of being associated with hawala channels. Incidentally, the UK was the favoured domicile of A.R. Yakub, and it was in that country that he passed away last year. He became a billionaire through gold trading in Dubai It is not a secret that huge profits were made in that trade through smuggling of the precious metal into India during the period when there were severe curbs on legal private import of gold into India. Yakub was close to the Bhutto family and is suspected of having been a front for some of the money kept abroad of that super-rich political dynasty. He was also known to Mullah Omar, and is known by intelligence agencies in India of having assisted the Taliban, presumably on the request of the ISI. More ominously, the ARY Group was alleged by agencies in India of having provided funding to ULFA in Assam to enable the group to secure sophisticated weapons through Bangladesh, a country where ARY has extensive contacts, especially within the groups close to former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, a known backer of Pakistan against India, but who is also a favourite of Washington. An arms consignment designated for ULFA was seized from two vessels at Chittagong port in 2004 after an alert from Delhi, but others are known to have got away. Interestingly, A.R. Yakub was close to Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, the “father” of the Pakistan nuclear bomb and has been accused by agencies in the US and India of having been a front for the assets of the nuclear scientist, who set up a merchandise depot for sensitive nuclear technology before it was shut down because of US pressure.

ARY Digital and ARY Aurum Plus are some of the other businesses of the group. Its bullion business suffered a setback in 2005 when the London Bullion Market Association cancelled its licence after an investigation into a UAE-based affiliate. The investigation focused on allegations of money laundering, narco trafficking and terror financing, although details have not been released. Intelligence agencies in India warn that the group has extensive ties to the ISI. A senior official claimed that the group has “often facilitated the ISI in its global operations”. A colleague pointed out that Yakub “was (alleged to have been) the intermediary between the Taliban in Afghanistan and tribal groups in Pakistan, theologically and operationally allied to that militia”. Yakub was close to Pervez Musharraf. In 2002, former PM Benazir Bhutto was convicted on corruption charges for making ARY Gold the monopoly importer of the precious metal into Pakistan, from which country a significant chunk gets smuggled into India via the porous coasts of the two countries.

In the UK, group affiliates have been accused of assisting Taliban leaders to convert their cash hoards into gold, thereby converting illegal cash (often the proceeds of narcotics or terror operations) into a commodity freely traded in legal exchanges worldwide. Interestingly, Yakub had visited India in 2008, holding discussions with two Mumbai-based jewellers.

Should Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Home Minister Rajnath Singh accept Swamy’s suggestion that a probe be launched into the funding of PK, hopefully such an investigation will also zero in on ARY, which has for years been active in India through intermediaries and cutouts, and which has extensive links that are problematic from a security standpoint. What would be interesting to find out is exactly who in the Indian establishment lobbied for ARY media entities to set up shop in India, before such moves were scuttled by adverse intelligence on the group. It needs to be reiterated that thus far, there has been no substantive evidence produced of any formal linkage between the producers of PK and ARY, and that the truth can emerge only after the suggested probe has been completed, if it is begun.

So once again this is always possible irrespective of the initial once a film is truly liked. But sure enough we’ll find the same arguments from people saying how more than 200 or 230 or whatever isn’t possible, how films make most of their money initially these days. etc etc etc. Believe it or not the same claims were being made when films were going from 40 crore initials to 65 crore final grosses. And I still don’t think this is “the one”…the capacity is higher in my estimation for “the one”.

          • I agree this is not the benchmark. PK is a film somewhat below the euphoria 3 Idiots created. If I were to recaliberate it to 2009 numbers it would be a 150 cr film against 3 Idiots 200 cr. Still a genuine big hit. Genuine being the key word.
The great films tend to have a high repeat and recall value. Most if not all the biggies since 3 Idiots fell well short. One does not need box office numbers or trends to prove it (although PK has done just that). But general judgement on the quality aspect of a film is enough.
Unfortunately the Bang Bangs and HNY of this world will always attract a certain media attention and fans will always follow it. The reality is a big film with a huge opening week can follow through and accumulate huge totals in week two and week three. Good films do this. Bad films dont.
I have some sympathy for the naysayers. A bigger and growing market does mean an element of front loading and audience exhaustion. But never to the extent that one makes everrything after week one redundant to a films performance. I even saw it with D3. Vastly underperformed and that was clear from the 2nd week to 3rd week drop. The difference with D3 vs other biggies was it had a huge buzz and must see written all over it. It just elongated the performance over a 2 week period. But PK is a genuine performer. Week 2 drop less than 50% and week three will be just over 50% but closer to 50% than 60%. And the norm for every big grosser since 3 Idiots has been 70% or more.

Does it refer to our civilisational construct or to the broad Nehruvian consensus on which the founding fathers of our Constitution reposed their faith in the ‘Idea of India’ as a nation state? Let’s say it makes 350 cr. Out of this 320 cr (92%) would have been made in the first 3 weeks. So it does show that today, even fora tremendously liked film, more than 90% of the money us earned in the first 3 weeks. Trending has to be considered for this or at best 4 weeks period. Which means we have to track figures on a daily basis and draw the graph rather than weeks.

    • While it is all good to get swayed in euphoria over PK’s monetary success, one should not forget to add that the increased ticket prices did play a competent role in racing toward the goal faster..

I am not talking about this just to throw a spanner in the works: And I am not blaming VVC/AK/RH alone for this. If the ‘one and only’ Rajnikanth’s producers can indulge in such vulgarity then I guess VVC/AK/RH cannot be witch-hunted. This is a dirty tactic being employed by the biggies and is becoming a norm and I sure as hell am surprised at the spending power of middle-class India. Apart from these ridiculous prices in multi-plexes, a family of 4 also has to shell out exorbitant money for a cup of tea which is not even half of a urine sample that labs collect. [Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the BIGGEST bullies of Hi-fi, YashRaj hadn’t increased their prices for D3 I think, which is ironic].

It is true that one would rather have Hirani making more money than a Farah, but really, this ‘norm’ of jacking up prices is really abominable.

They do jack up prices in the US too, but really only for the 3D and the IMAX ones. Alternately, you do not have a WILD ‘reduce’ its prices just because it is considered a high-art movie!! So a well-liked WILD stands as much as a chance of making expected money as a JOHN WICK or EQUALIZER!!

There is far more consistency in the US than in India on these prices..

      • I think it is all a demand and supply thing. Hirani and Aamir happen once in 2 years or 3 years. Unlike Yashraj’s who churn out films left right and centre from big budget to small budget movies. And public had a choice to reject which they exercised for a movie like Talaash. And repeat audience tells a different story. One will be cheated once, not twice or thrice.

        Like

        • You cannot justify this vulgarity with a demand and supply thing. If you are SO SURE of your product – content driven et al – what is the need to jack up prices? You are going to get there. Remember, you are not the guys who are NOT into front-loading..

And the irony is, this is RKH — who arguably carries over the mantle of ‘middle-class’ India from Mukherjee!! I am quite positive Mukherjee would have thwacked VVC/HIRANI for this baniyagiri.

And I know the logic people come up with for this – Don’t watch if you feel it pinches your pocket. Of course it is damn easy to say. But in an industry that produces 5 decent films per year out of 500, who wouldn’t be eager to watch it? Irrespective of the price? So the job is done. You have already emotionally black-mailed the viewer. The carrot and stick policy has worked!!

Thankfully, they did not jack up the prices for PK here in US. It was the usual price unlike the horrendous Rajnikanth movie..

As I said before, I am not targeting only these film-makers. But it is worrisome if even the almost-extinct species of quality film-makers and producers resort to such tactics..

    Q. Is Aamir Khan number one beating Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan now after PK and Dhoom 3
Ans. Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan are the top two stars and that does not really alter after P.K as their huge popularity is unaffected. The lifetime numbers are more about content than star power. Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan will generally get the best initials and they also have more volume of releases over last five years be it Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan.

    Q. Can you tell me actual PK opening day figure as Happy New Year actual was a lot lower than the estimate given on day one?

    Q. You have said that Salman Khan is star of the year but Kick was not that good acting by Salman Khan where as Aamir Khan has given award winning performance in P.K. so he should be top star of 2014?
Ans. Its not about award winning performances thats all subjective and about opinions. There will be 100 of award ceremonies and each will give according to their opinion. From a box office point of view Salman Khan did more for Kick than what Aamir Khan did for P.K.

So in Hollywood terms Leo doesn’t get credit for working with the likes of Scorsese or Nolan or whoever. What matters more is being vin Diesel! Of course Leo often doesn’t have the biggest grossers or anything close to this because of the kind of cinema he usually does. With Aamir it’s not even this. He’s doing Hirani and he’s getting the biggest grossers! There’s no case here either way which is why I suppose ‘madness’ is one kind of response.

Kick was all out promotions on KNWK etc. PK was less is more approach. So simply stating that Salman did more for Kick is not supported with any logic.

Aamir plus Rajkumar Hirani is a supreme combination that was Salman and Sooraj Barjatya post HAHK. But one cannot blame Aamir to pick great scripts and movies that break records on records. There’s a reason by Raju Hirani writes a movie and bases his character on Aamir, he sees that justice and boxoffice angle in him.

Same is with him seeing the same in Ranbir Kapoor for the Sanjay Dutt biopic. I am sure it would be entertaining and blockbuster material.

The real test for Salman now is to bring PRDP to a huge level, its a Diwali release for him after a long time. There’s no pre eid BS here. Its Rajshree, Sooraj, Salman..they will promote it like from the makers of HAHK etc and add to that Salman’s brand value.

What has happened in last 7 years is Aamir has got his continued good movies with box office leverage..which wasn’t the case earlier.

    Right because

Aamir can probably sell a Dhoom type Crap once or twice..but not in succession.

Srk or Salman on the other hand have been selling the same shit for years and still getting away with successes (although nowhere close to aamir)

    Wrong because

What an Aamir can do for a Talaash, TZP, Lagaan or PK is what srk or salman can’t for such movies.. We saw what happened to Swades or Paheli..,.or the least masala of Salman’s collection- Jai Ho..(sorry didn’t have a better example)..Not many can give a 90 crore somewhat success out of a movie like Talaash.

It gets difficult after 250 crores. If people are ready to pay more to watch a certain movie, it means the movie is in demand and they dont want to wait for months to watch it on tv or dvds. If SRK doubles ticket prices for his next movie and can get 400 crores, his getting 64 points is the mark of star power of SRK. Movies run on star power first, content next and when star power and content both combine we get ATBB.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan, who struggled in the ongoing Test series against Australia, has also been retained in the squad, and Gavaskar feels he is a better choice over Murali Vijay in the limited-over format.

“The World Cup is 50-over format and this is the format which will suit Dhawan more,” he pointed out.

The fans have taken to the social networking sites after the World Cup squad was announced on Tuesday, criticising Stuart Binny’s inclusion in the side. His father, Roger, incidentally is a member of the selection committee.

But Gavaskar lashed out at the fans, stating that he would have also picked Stuart, irrespective of his father being a former teammate.

      • Don’t think Binny has got many chances at all- in the last ODI he played he had a 6 wicket haul (now he certainly he isn’t a good enough bowler to get too many fifers, here too he was playing against a minnow). He was then criminally underused by Dhoni in the England tests (though there too he did get a fifty). Finally the guy has been taken because few of the World Cup matches will be played in New Zealand where the bowl swings and Binny, like his father, can swing the bowl (apart from the fact that he gives Dhoni the option of playing a fast-bowling allrounder: had the World Cup been in India I doubt he would have been in the squad). I wish they would have selected Pravin Kumar though- this guy certainly wrecked his career (mainly because of poor fitness), but as far as I am concerned he has been the only swing bowler of any real class since Kapil. The guy bowled one of the best spells by an Indian pace bowler in the 2008 VB series finals against the Aussies and couple that with his ability to take wickets in the first 5-6 overs, he would have been very valuable in the World Cup (especially since the current pace attack is completely toothless)

  50. PK At 35 Crore Nett For Third Week
    Wednesday 07 January 2015 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

PK has grossed 3.75 crore nett om its third Tuesday to take its lifetime total to 312 crore nett plus. The third week collections is as follows.

    Friday – 6,50,00,000
    Saturday- 8,50,00,000
    Sunday – 12,00,00,000
    Monday – 4,25,00,000
    Tuesday – 3,75,00,000

    Total – 35,00,00,000

The third week will see the film doing its best business in Delhi/UP grossing around 10 crore nett which is less than 50% fall from last week. Mumbai circuit will see a 65% drop.

    Like

    • It’s basically heading towards 340-350 crore life totals. Based on the opening week of 182.5 crore, that would indicate average weekly drops of between 52-54%. That’s desperately close to doubling the initial and if one takes stock that the first week had a Xmas day worth 27 crore, you’ve practically got your film that doubled its initial. Yes, in today’s times, of spiralling ticket prices, wide releases, front loading…..a film can double its initial and more in fact. Now cry babies may want to say technically 52-54% is not a double, well technically that is right. Or that this should be a 400 crore film (when a Bang Bang is a 140 crore film!)

But the debate was always it was possible and PK proves this loud and clear. One day a better film (and make no mistake PK has flaws to make it much better, it was not the tight fine polished effort 3 Idiots was or the standout hilarious moments) will come along and provide the message even more profoundly.

2nd weeks don’t need to fall north of 70% and films don’t need to become desperate to scratch around for a few crores in week 2 or 3. Only films “designed” in such a way do this. And proclaiming them to be big hits is only promoting more to be made!

I needn’t remind the naysayers that the records PK is breaking as it will only fuel more idiotic comments from their side…but I would simply like to say…WE TOLD YOU SO!

The terrorsit angle was the most half baked implementation of the idea. A major part of the climax could have dealt on Islamic terorism but it didn’t. They Chickened out and showed a nonsensical India-Pak thing (the same feel good khichdi that Hirani cooks in almost all his films) instead.

On PK: aamir didn’t blame godmen of any religion..He (pk) just analyzed (and hence criticized) modes of worshipping or instead modes of connecting to God (the telephone to god was a metaphor in case you didn’t notice) It was not about godmen making that call through his chamatkars or even common man making that call through their bribes (baba or no baba), their elaborate pujas, or their kurbaanis.

The Bias is that even though PK was successful in pointing out the wastage of money and resources (and exploitation of faith) in case of Hindu methods (based on that religion) .. He didn’t even once touch the topic of those Islamic teachers that destroy the minds of young kids in madarsaas which is the seed to Islamic terrorism. While a Hindu godmen (Saurabh Shukla) was depicted as Islam hating (in multiple lines in the film)..there wasn’t a simgle instance shown in the movie that showed a muslim maulvi talking about violence against other religions.

India was the first country in the world to ban The Satanic Verses; the CPIM in West Bengal banned a book on Bose’s affair with a European woman, even though there was hardly anything controversial about publishing the man’s own letters to her!; James Laine’s book suggesting that Shivaji might have been born out of wedlock was also banned after hooligans attacked an institute where he had conducted research; two girls were arrested (and later released, mercifully) in Thane after some pretty ordinary FB posts after Bal Thackeray’s death; and there are many more such examples. One might even argue that in India terrorists don’t NEED to attack the Charlie Hebdos of the country because the state will shut things down for them, under the guise of maintaining public order; so no need to kill 12 people as a little hooliganism, some ghundagardi auditions from political groups will get them what they want (in France, they couldn’t so then the terrorists used Plan B, i.e. intimidate private parties).

Maybe mass killings of this sort has not yet been resorted to but it is slowly moving that way with the same ideology that the counterparts in India adopt.

The love jihad picture of Kareena on the cover of a magazine run by these people is the latest propogating hate.

In short, it is only now that people with similar ideology are feeling free, and their spreading hate is catching up speed day by day.

Aamir and PK’s success is the result of a long process. After the success of Ghajini, deep-pocket producers indulged in mindless competition to be in the Rs. 100-crore club. Mindless because the focus was on marketing rather than the content. Audiences winced at each nonsensical Rs. 100 crore film, but Aamir stood apart in their view. – See more at: http://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/bollywood/being-aamir-khan-the-serial-success-of-a-superstar/article1-1304434.aspx#sthash.D5mwOUP8.dpuf

    • There is probably no other country where: It has become a national pastime among its educated class to denigrate its own culture and history, however great that has been over the many millennia of its existence. When great archaeological discoveries of India’s past are found, for example, they are not a subject for national pride but are ridiculed as an exaggeration, if not an invention, as if they represent only the imagination of backward chauvinistic elements within the culture.

There is probably no other country where: The majority religion, however enlightened, mystical or spiritual, is ridiculed, while minority religions, however fundamentalist or even militant, are doted upon. The majority religion and its institutions are taxed and regulated while minority religions receive tax benefits and have no regulation or even monitoring. While the majority religion is carefully monitored and limited as to what it can teach, minority religions can teach what they want, even if anti-national or backward in nature. Books are banned that offend minority religious sentiments but praised if they cast insults on majority beliefs.

There is probably no other country where: Regional, caste and family loyalties are more important than the national interest, even among those who claim to be democratic, socialist or caste reformers. Political parties exist not to promote a national agenda but to sustain one region or group of people in the country at the expense of the whole. Each group wants as big a piece of the national pie as it can get, not realizing that the advantages it gains mean deprivation for other groups. Yet when those who were previously deprived gain power, they too seek the same unequal advantages that causes further inequality and discontent.

The killing of one Christian missionary: Becomes a national media event of anti-Christian attacks while the murder of hundreds of Hindus is taken casually as without any real importance, as if only the deaths of white-skinned people mattered, not the slaughter of the natives. Missionary aggression is extolled as social upliftment, while Hindu efforts at self-defense against the conversion onslaught are portrayed as rabid fundamentalism. One Indian journalist even lamented that western armies would not come to India to chastise the political groups he was opposed to, as if he was still looking for the colonial powers to save him!

The irony: Is that rather than embracing its own great traditions, the modern Indian psyche prefers to slavishly imitate worn out trends in western intellectual thought like Marxism or even to right apologetics for Christian and Islamic missionary aggression. Though living in India, in proximity to temples, yogis and great festivals, most modern Indian intellectuals are oblivious to the soul of the land. They might as well be living in England or China for all they know of their own country.

          Like

          • It’s hard to have serious discussions with certain folks but Eng is simply an Indian language at this point. Yes it grew out of a colonial history in India but nonetheless it’s now a permanent part of India. Some dictionaries like Chambers even mention Indian English as a separate variety. In Latin America Spanish is the overwhelmingly dominant language everywhere (barring Brazil.. though the same principle holds here). This again happened because of a history of colonization. It was even worse here because so much of the native population was exterminated (either willingly or by way of infectious disease.. they had no immunity against many viruses that the Europeans brought with them). But still Spanish is in a pragmatic sense even the only language in this region in many cases. And so much of history is about dramatic changes happening because of such events. One can have a view about all of this (and certainly the history of colonialism is a terribly sordid and brutal one) without foolishly arguing against Eng or what have you. No serious critic of thinker of colonialism offers such absurd prescriptions. Of course in the case of India ‘Hindutva’ is a colonial/European phenomenon through and through. It precisely has nothing to do with all the strands of Hindu thought, practice and belief that preceded it (not that those were a unity either.. the word ‘Hinduism’ is itself a British invention!). And so once again you see these ignorant arguments being rehashed all the time. British history is part of Indian history, there’s nothing to be done about it! And it is impossible to imagine contemporary India without that intervention. From the Constitution to all the institutions of the state the British intervention is obvious everywhere.

This doesn’t mean one has to endorse everything. We don’t have to endorse the extermination of American ‘Indians’ and yet here we are (some of us at least!) in the US living with English and with the ‘remains’ of an exterminated population. We (some of us) living in England, the ‘mother’ country once upon a time. So on and so forth. one has to be mature about this stuff. Ideology founded on such ignorance is precisely the most dangerous thing. There is so much violence to be found everywhere in history in the name of everything under the sun that it’s really hard to keep track, impossible to account for everything. Similarly for me violence doesn’t just become so outside the borders of a nation-state or what have you. So yes there is a history of colonialism in India which was often brutal, there is equally a history of Muslim rule that was often brutal too, there is an even older history of ‘Hindu’ rule which is as brutal, one could go down the list. The original Indians, the ‘adivasis’ (those who refer to ‘Hindus’ as ‘outsiders’ in their languages even if conveniently this sixth of the Indian population is always ignored, always the most brutalized).. or ‘later’ perhaps the Dravidians who consider themselves prior to a ‘Hindu’ Northern invasion.. it goes on. But nothing is as violent in Indian history, as the history of caste domination and all its institutions. It is one of the most astonishingly dark episodes of world history, certainly so for the longevity it’s had.

But those who are not serious, those who are ideological automatons, or those who believe in kindergarten views of history, such folks are happy with fairy-tales and in the age of online media they can permanently inhabit their bubbles. There are many such folks everywhere in all religions or adherents to all kinds of politics and so forth. There are of course many things that can be seriously debated. For instance there was a discussion about censorship earlier and I completely agree that it was wrong to place the customs ban on the Satanic verses or pander to minorities shamelessly on many of these issues. Here the other side certainly has a point. But these discussions can only come about in an atmosphere of sincerity and good faith. When people come up with the most toxic stuff, that is either stupidly, insanely ignorant and/or terrifying in terms of its ideological consequences, and then when they complain about ‘fairness’ it’s a bit hard to take them seriously. If you say the most atrocious stuff and believe in some pretty disturbing things and then say this is all only so that the balance of the universe might be set right and if this did happen they’d all become nice constitutional democrats (!) one can only laugh.

I’ve said this many times before but ultimately these are questions of responsibility. When one constantly blames the other side and refuses to look in the mirror (whoever does it) this is a way of always evading responsibility. One is always this innocent victim of history who has never done anything. In every nation of the word there are those who believe this stuff. It animates the politics of so many nations. Much like the belief of being the greatest civilization, the best possible one with the best values and what not. Of course everyone cannot be right at the same time but these are logical questions too complex and complicated for some. Getting back to the subject at hand the idea that one can be a hyper-nationalist with respect to India without bothering to live in India is evidently an irony lost on many. This doesn’t of course mean that one has to always live in one’s country to call oneself a nationalist. Absolutely not. But there are certain brands of jingoism and chauvinism that beg the question. Again one always keeps good company in these matters. There are others like one from other parts of the world doing the very same!

As far as I’m concerned one of the richest traditions in human history whether one calls it the ‘Indian/Indic’ or the ‘Sanskritic’ or the ‘Hindu’ (all these labels of course don’t mean the same thing) has to be saved from dangerous people like yourself. There are again many like you everywhere destroying everything that is of value in a tradition. It’s unfortunate but a fact of life. But resistance to this madness is nonetheless necessary.

          • If you define Hinduism as a religion as it is generally perceived, then no. It is not at all a binding factor.

If you define it as the Indian way of living, its culture, its languages, the ethos of its people, (some people do define it this way), then yes, it is the only binding factor.

(There is nothing special in that last line. It is just like saying, being Indian is the only binding factor. The word Hindu derives itself from the Avestan version for the River Indus or Sindhu, and as broader term for the people living in the vicinity as viewed by the Avestans. The land of these Hindus was called Hinduš. This got Latinized to the modern name India and Arabized to the name Hindustan.)

So by this definition, it is obviously the binding factor.
What I mean by this is that every single person living in India is Indian, belonging to India.

(Now, as per the above word etymology, replace the word India by Hindu. Simple as that. If you want to change the word Indian by UUTYURLN then I would have to change my answer to saying : UUTYURLN-ism is the only binding factor for United India.)

            Update:

According to a 1995 Supreme Court of India judgement the word Hindutva could be used to mean “the way of life of the Indian people and the Indian culture or ethos”.

Read more here, it goes to describe in much detail

          • The closest competitors of India in terms of multiculturalism, are western democracies like France, USA, etc, however there are major limitations imposed upon their citizens that curtail democracy.

For example: the celebrated American culture itself proclaims to be only a “Melting Pot civilization”. A deeper study would reveal that cultures and values of people who created the U.S.melted to form a single American identity. Life would thus be difficult for people in the U.S. who do not understand English, are not catholic or people who do not comply to essentially American ethos. No wonder Americans whose ancestry does not confirm to local prejudices prefer to severe links with their past. Germans, Arabs are typical examples of this phenomenon.

Similarly France known for jealously preserving its republican values does not standby anything that’s not celebrated in the typical French culture. The regional languages of France are sometimes called patois, but this term (roughly meaning “dialect”) is often considered derogatory. Patois is used to refer to supposedly purely oral languages,[citation needed] but this does not, for instance, take into account that Occitan was already being written at a time when French was not and its literature has continued to thrive, with a Nobel Prize for Frédéric Mistral in 1904.
At the time of the French revolution in 1789 it is estimated that only half of the population of France spoke French, and by 1871 only a quarter spoke French

Inspite of glaring problems in law enforcement and flourishing communalism in almost all parts of India; The kind of respect and recognition guaranteed to ethnic and religious minorities in the constitution of India may not draw many parellels even in the first world.

            The Saviors

The Idea India couldn’t have survived this long without the presence of below mentioned factors:

The composite culture of India build over thousands of years deserves maximum credit . Majority of people in India(read Hindus) truly believe in the truth of all major religions in the world! Communalism though rampart now, is only a recent phenomenon in historical standards
The legacy of struggle for Indian Independence against the British, still inspires patriotism in Indians

The ingenuity of the framers of Indian constitution; that has ensured survival of democracy, inspite of all attempt to alter the basic structure of constitution over the years (42nd amendment,34th amendment etc.)
The efficiency of Indian Civil Service; sometimes considered the steel frame of Indian Union
The integrity and devotion of the Indian armed forces;who never attempted to topple the government; inspite of wide-spread public outrage at times, against the government and democratic process at large
Hostile neighborhood. the idea of being a small and militarily weak nation may not be all that appealing, if you have neighbors like Pakistan and China ready to gobble prospective regional states at the drop of a hat
And finally the quiet essential Indian traits and aspirations also have a huge role to play. Love for Cricket and Bollywood, celebration of festivals, appreciation of education, etc have helped the people of our great country and has made them stake holders in the idea of India.

Which also proves how less HNY, Kick etc did in comparison and how their success was bloated in the media whereas the fact is that almost all big budget films have never trended the way they should have.

Still I would say the impact of PK is less than the euphoria 3 idiots created in its time. That had a lot of repeat audience and the greatest mass hit since Gadar. Its success cannot be emulated easily, not even by PK

Throughout various discussions- I have provided examples, quotes from movies and their relative comparisons in their substance and how impacting they were. You on the other hand are just like that stuck up Rajiv Masand who before even watching PK had made up his mind that it’d be beyond comparing to a small “Disney” movie like OMG..Why ? because it has been by Lord Hirani and it stars Lord aamir himself..

This is utter snobbery and nothing else…in your own review of PK..you kept harping about Hirani…and his comparison with Hrishikesh Mukherjee,, how Aamir has done wonders to the character- never really stressing on the crux of the movie itself.

As I said before..this is nothing new but snobbery of highest order which is as good as saying, since I am paying 200 bucks for a dinner it HAS to be better than food served in a local deli ..why? Because the 200 dollars dinner has been prepared by some Masterchef winner and the local deli is some uncle John.

“Kabhi kisi se unka bhagwaan mat chheen na, warna woh tumhe hi apna bhagwaan bana lenge” – OMG

Find me a better line that that in PK.

    • Sorry to butt in, but Satyam’s stale response is to a stale argument put forth by you that OMG is classic and hence superior. Call it snobbery or respect, a Hirani and an aamir elicit that response because of their past work and record.

    • Sanjana,

I have nothing against Aamir or Hirani. I too enjoyed their work including PK., but unlike others I take each film on its merit rather than worshiping some sort of legacy (and be another congress supporter of Dynasty). If Hirani made a film that I’d have liked more than OMG (on the same topic), then I’d have gladly accepted it.

    • Aamir had a Talaash couple of years ago and the reaction to it was pretty mixed, while I still think that It was his best performance in a while by a distance. I can’t really decide Hirani’s best because Hirani has essentially made just two films until now and released the first story in 3 flavors (MBBS, LRMB, 3 Idiots) with the same exact ingredients , same bas bhi kar rulaega kya moments and same background of someone doing aaaaa in some emotional scenes with at least one wiping their happy tears.

Having said that I still think he has made extremely entertaining films. PK is the first time he did something different since his debut (although he did throw in his regular sahnis and happy tears but still the rest of it substantially different).. He is a very enjoyable filmmaker but he has extremely few things to say.

    • I think my piece on PK speaks for itself.. doubt anyone would agree with your characterizations but whatever!

On OMG I’ve seen all your examples. the problem is that you define these as profundity and I don’t. I revisited the film recently as well. There is nothing here beyond the obvious and that obvious isn’t particularly profound. I don’t have an issue with you liking OMG a lot or not liking PK much. That’s not what I’m arguing about. I just don’t see what there is in OMG that could be overrated so much.

      • First- there’s nothing such as overrated in OMG. The examples I gave are about the central theme in both movies and it clearly depicts why one is superior than other. Your piece is a fine one by it has more to do with Hirani and Aamir than the movie itself. You talk about hirani’s repertoire and Aamir’s skills rather than the movie itself… The latter half of your essay was more or less influenced by the current debate on PK in India rather than analysis of the movie elements itself.

        • Are bhai Paapas, OMG did not have Abhishek…so Satyam will not appreciate. You should have pitched in Guru or Bunty aur Bubbly and then had seen the response.
Ohh yes…if you had been Jayshah then also he would have agreed with following reply – “Your assessment is so purrrfect that there is nothing more one could add”

Why only Paris massacre is in news? Can you not dare to create a series on Nigeria killing? Nigeria has become real hell on earth.

This sort of debate — “why aren’t we talking about XYZ, and this shows a double standard” — could go on endlessly: Central African Republic, anyone? Myanmar?
