  1. After Ajith’s ‘Yennai Arindhaal’, ‘Gopala Gopala’ Release Date Changed, Courtesy Vikram’s ‘I’
By Prakash Upadhyaya January 8, 2015 12:49 IST

Chiyaan Vikram’s “I” seems to have unsettled many big South movies, which were meant for Pongal release, forcing some producers to change their release plans. First it was “Yennai Arindhaal” and now it is Telugu movie “Gopala Gopala”.

Originally, about five to eight South movies were planned for Pongal release, but many have been force to back out due to Vikram’s “I”. Ajith’s “Yennai Arindhaal” and Sivakarthikeyan’s “Kakki Sattai” changed their release plans a few days ago.

Pawan Kalyan’s “Gopala Gopala” is the latest movie, which is reportedly facing the heat from Vikram’s “I”. It is because Vikram’s movie is not only the most-awaited by Tamil movie buffs, but also Telugu cinegoers
    .
“Gopala Gopala” was planned for Pongal release but the makers of the movie have now advanced the release date to 10 January. This will help the Telugu movie to have a wide release and make good business before Vikram’s movie hits the screens for Sankranthi festival.
The Pawan Kalyan and Venkatesh starrer is a Telugu remake of Bollywood movie “Oh My God”, which featured Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in lead roles. Vikram’s movie is an original one made by Shankar, whose films have often done well in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The trailer and the promotional materials of “I” have raised expectations of the audience across south India. The makers of “Gopala Gopala” have possibly sensed the pulse of the audience.
Not to forget, Vikram has a good market in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions and this too could have impacted “Gopala Gopala” had it clashed with “I”. After considering all these factors, the makers of “Gopala Gopala” have apparently changed their release plan.

“I” is a mega-budget movie produced by Aascar Ravichandran. Amy Jackson is the female lead in the multi-lingual flick.

    • The court has given the makers of I, which is originally slated for release Jan 14, time till Jan 30 to settle dues.

“Everybody associated with the film are hereby restrained by an order of interim injunction till Jan 30 from releasing the movie (I) in theatres anywhere in and outside India. The applicant is directed to initiate arbitration proceedings,” said Justice R. Mahadevan.

The film’s producer Ravichandran however expressed confidence that there will be no change in the film’s release date.

“Everything will be sorted out very soon and the film will release as planned earlier,” he said in a statement.

  2. Tevar Opens To Average Response
    Friday 09 January 2015 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The first major release of the year Tevar opened to an average response as some places had a good to decent start while others were not so good. The overall opening was in the 30-35% range.

The opening was pretty good in Rajasthan and CI where the collections were in the 45-50% range but Delhi and Punjab were low at 20-25%. The film has a good release with around 3000 screens but the films fate will depend on growth on Saturday especially in the areas which have opened to low numbers like North. The best business should come in the Central belt and Mumbai circuit. Bihar will also put up a decent number.

The figures of PK are also down as it has had a very strong run till now and the competition of a major release was always likely to affect it but it should recover considerably tomorrow.

    • this is the latest campaign in the anti-PK wars. Let’s try and list this latest bit of disjunctive logic:

      1)PK insults Hinduism
2)PK insults Hinduism, but this shows how tolerant Hindus are, however it should have insulted Islam and Christianity and Sikkhism more
3)PK is a flop, they’re feeding the collections

as always the ideological agendas are far less insulting than the utter stupidity behind such write-ups. And let me go further than this — it takes a certain kind of stupidity to fall for such stuff.

      • of course all this should be taken seriously. If someone like Aamir with his credentials can be attacked by anyone this way (and I know it’s a minority), if a film that’s such a mega-success can be targeted this way, this has a chilling effect on other filmmakers who don’t start with such considerable strengths and who know their films can be derailed completely with such tactics. But these folks would have us believe they are merely great guarantors of democracy and are merely protesting pandering to the other side. Yeah right! Some of us are enjoying this PK race to 340 or 350. These other folks can cry all the way! It’s only fair given this film that they get free drinks along the way!

Of course and almost as a rule you’re wrong once again. Because India has no France-like rights in these matters. I am not taking a position on this but legally and even moreso as a practical matter these rights are not there.

Getting back to PK some Right-wing groups are of course targeting PK. It’s dishonest and utterly nonsensical to suggest otherwise. Who’s been vandalizing those theaters? This is not an acceptable form of ‘protest’ in any democracy. You can protest all you like, write opinion columns, march on the streets.. whatever, but there is no excuse for violence in this matter.

A film does 300 crores plus and counting …
However it STILL needs defence amongst box office circles

For the first time, box office india is faithfully following producer numbers
Suddenly indias box office reporting seems to have undergone overnight metamorphosis and there’s a total conformity of BOI and producer numbers

The same BOI however suddenly becomes pariah when it points out that inspite of such record breaking numbers–the opening day was subpar (pointing to the subpar starpower of aamir?)

The same BOI becomes sacrosanct gold standard when it under reports other films (who didn’t have an open run without competition)

The UTTER DESPAIR AND SHAMELESSNESS reaches FEVER PITCH when the ENTIRE BATTALION of a medley of worshippers consisting of aamir fans, anti srk fans and orphaned bachchan fans like jayshah, aamirsfan, cool girl, myself aamir etc

hold a 24X7 to do what?

To convince others of the success of the film and the stardom of the lead actor
Of the biggest box office success of all time

I am a hindu participating in all the hindu festivals, functions of relatives and friends. Participating is different from worshipping and this is what is called true hinduism where no one is compelled but everyone is invited and no one will criticise other religions and no one will mind marriages with other castes and other religions. I dont want this hinduism to disappear and become intolerant, insulting and insecure.

I can understand insecurity but we have to fight insecurity by befriending good people from other religions and not making them feel insecure and alienated.

    • First and foremost – There is nothing called True Hinduism. and Second all the things you mentioned are not by any means part of Hinduism (Sanatan Dharm to be exact). What you mentioned essentially is modern liberalism mixed with idealistic humanitarian philosophy. What you’re calling Hinduism is your idea of liberty and what you want Hinduism to be.

Perhaps you were trying to mean “Tolerance and Acceptance” when you mentioned those things, and if that’s the case then I’d competely agree. Like it or not if one sticks to religion then the inter- religion marriage won’t be possible (for any religion including yours). What you mentioned is probably the much needed evolution of religion.

Holi is not celebrated in the south the way north celebrates it, Kerala hindus have Onam as the topmost festival, Makar sankranti is not kite festival in the south, even new years are different for different hindus. Unity in diversity. This unity in diversity is also on a larger scale, like Christmas being celebrated by hindus by having Christmas trees and Santaclaus(not going to churches though some may visit), Diwali being celebrated in similar fashion by some christian families, hindus visit Ajmer and dargas, Some select muslims like Salman Khan bringing Ganpati and the examples are more.

    Box Office India Trade Network

PK grossed around 1.75 crore nett on its fourth Friday and it is the first time that the film has seen a major drop since release. The start of the fourth week is below record pace but still it is only behind one film 3 Idiots. So its likely to record the second highest fourth week total ever adding to the record totals of week one, week two and week three.

The film should show a good jump on Saturday as that is what happens when an established film drops due to a new release. The film is now doing its best business in Delhi/UP which is collecting more than Mumbai circuit.

The film is likely to cross the 325 crore nett mark on Sunday and lifetime is expected to finish in the 335-340 crore nett range. The distributor share will be a huge 165 crore apprx.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Tevar will be depending on Saturday growth as the first day will come in at around 7 crore nett. The film has managed average business in pockets like Rajasthan and CI but Delhi/UP and East Punjab are poor.

The opening day is looking to be a little better than Heropanti which was a similar film released last year but although that film was similar in genre the cost was much lower. It does make it tough when a mass film in order to succeed has to depend on growth but that seems to be order of day as outside the holiday releases, mass films are finding it hard to open well. Infact any film releasing outside holidays is truggling to open barring a couple of exceptions.

The film will be hoping to grow on Saturday especially in the North but even if growth comes its unlikely to go over 25 crore nett for the weekend.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Tevar has failed to show much growth on Saturday as collections are likely to come in the same range as the opening day. The film really needed to show growth to have a chance at the box office.

The film will be looking at a 13.50 crore nett total in two days and the weekend could go to around 22 crore nett which is not a good total as the film has taken for a big price especially for the face value it had. The producers have made good money as the film is not a big budget one but distributors will lose due a heavy price tag. On the budget of the film, a 22 crore nett weekend is not that bad.

The performance is okay in places like Rajasthan where it grossed 50 lakhs on day one and 42 lakhs on day two but a mass circuit like CP Berar has not performed at all. Mumbai has grossed 4.50 crore nett in two days with Gujarat / Saurashtra belt being average but rest dull. .

PK grossed around 2.50 crore nett on its fourth Saturday. Established films sometimes double up on the Saturday when they first face competition but PK already has a record 300 crore nett plus total behind it so the run is getting exhausted now. The two day fourth week collections is as follows.

    Friday – 1,75,00,000
    Saturday- 2,50,00,000

    Total – 4,25,00,000

Tevar had similar collections on the first two days in the 6.75 crore nett range. A few circuits were up on day two while a few were down, as the film did not take a strong start it needed good growth on Saturday. Sunday should grow as single screens will collect well.
