Box Office Predictions: Shamitabh All Set To Take A Decent Opening
One thing that has always worked for films coming from the house of Balki and Gauri Shinde (English Vinglish) is originality. In that aspect, even Shamitabh is expected to deliver since it has a novel subject to it. Moreover, with Dhanush and Akhshara Haasan, there is freshness in cast too.
Initial feedback: good movie, bit slow, but hearing words like, Amitabh’s best performance till date, WOW, already booked tickets for FDFS tomorrow. So here is my BO predictions (producers / taran adarsh figures as i dont believe in BOI, who is always kind of biased towards bachchan movies). If rejected / not liked by audience: 25 to 30 Cr. Mixed / average: 50 Cr. Good /liked: 70 to 100 cr. So, seeing initial feedback, i am pretty sure this film will cross minimum of 50 Crore in domestic market.
100 CRORES and BALKI!! No way..It should have a miraculous trending if it were to go near that figure..without including QUALITY at all as one of the variables..
Watched Polar Express once again and loved the fairy tale ambience and visuals. Better than Frozen. How can some critics think it is creepy? It was eerie but not creepy or scary.
‘I’ Box Office Collection: Vikram’s Flick Grosses ₹200 Crore Worldwide in 19 Days

The dream run of Vikram starrer “I” at box office has continued with the flick from three versions grossing ₹200 crore worldwide. It took 19 days to reach the mark.

A report on Andhra Box Office claims that “I” has crossed the 200-crore mark and the total gross of the movie by the end of 19 days is ₹202.95 crore. The major chunk of the business has come from Tamil Nadu where the Vikram’s movie has earned ₹74.06 crore (₹57.97 nett business).
The next big centre for “I” is Nizam/Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu version of the flick has made ₹40.19 crore from these two regions. The net collection is ₹34.45 crore. From Karnataka and Kerala, Shankar’s mega-budget movie has grossed ₹13.52 and ₹16.80 respectively. As per the trade analysts, very rarely a Tamil movie does better business in the God’s Own Country than the Garden City.
While “I” has made a net collection of ₹13.50 crore in Kerala, it has raked in ₹10.40 crore from Karnataka. From the four Southern states, the movie has grossed ₹144.57 crore and has netted ₹116.32 crore.
The Tamil and Telugu versions from rest of India have grossed ₹4.03 crore (₹3 crore nett) . The Hindi version of “I” has made a business of ₹16.25 (₹12.20 crore nett) to take its total tally to ₹164.85 (₹131.52 nett) in India.
In the overseas market, “I” has performed exceptionally well in US and Malaysia. From US and Canada, it has raked in ₹10.03 crore, ₹3.51 crore from the UK, ₹1.81 crore from Australia/New Zealand, ₹12.50 crore Malaysia and an estimate of ₹10.25 crore from rest of the world to make ₹202.95 crore gross worldwide.
This by any margin is the biggest for a Vikram movie. However, the response for “I” is steady in many key centres and the movie has continued to pull audience to theatres. We have to wait and watch if the movie will retain good occupancy this week as Ajith’s “Yennai Arindhaal” is releasing on 5 February.

Bollywood is one place which is always open to any kind of permutations and combinations. Be it the casting in the films or even the selection of the film’s titles, Bollywood has seen it all happen! This week’s release goes by the name of SHAMITABH, which when decoded, is the combination of Dhanu’sh’ and ‘Amitabh’, who also happen to be the lead stars in the film, which is directed by R. Balki. Does the film live up to the hype? Let’s analyze.
The film starts off with the star studded premiere of LIFEBUOY, the debut film of ‘superstar’ Daanish (Dhanush). And at the time of Q & A with the media persons, when a certain journalist asks him a certain question, this makes Daanish recall his journey from being a cinema-obsessed small town kid who was born dumb to what he is today, the superstar ‘Shamitabh’. The journey also shows his desperate attempts to become a star, despite his handicap. As any other cinema fanatic, Daanish too seizes an opportunity to come to Mumbai to realize his dreams of being a ‘star’… only to be shooed away from every studio he visits (read ‘gatecrashes’). Seizing a perfect chance, he starts ‘living’ in an actor’s vanity van! And when he gets caught by the security guards, he tries to explain his aspirations of being an actor, which makes all the security guards laugh at him. Amidst all this, the film’s Assistant Director Akshara (Akshara Haasan) sees the burning passion in his eyes to become an actor, which impresses her to no extent. That’s when she decides to help him realize his dreams and thus puts him through her doctor uncle, who in turn, suggests a certain technological breakthrough in medical science through which a dumb person can actually speak! But the only condition is that the voice won’t be of his own but of another person. Thus starts the search for a ‘perfect voice’ for Daanish begins. After many a vocal auditions, it’s finally the drunkard Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), whose voice Akshara and Daanish choose. The deal is signed with Amitabh which states that he will have to remain silent about all this and not utter a word to anyone, against which he will be paid handsomely for being Daanish’s voice. Daanish, who then, rechristens himself as Shamitabh goes on to become an overnight sensation with a voice to match. Thus starts his journey into the skies. It is during this journey, when success actually goes into his head that he starts dictating terms to Amitabh, who also starts suffering from the same ego issues as Daanish. Amidst these clashes, there arrives a journalist who gets his hand on the much guarded secret about Shamitabh’s truth.
Does the journalist become successful in exposing the truth behind the real ‘Shamitabh’, who amongst the two (Daanish and Amitabh) agree to compromise with the other, where does the duo’s ego clashes leave Akshara who is working really hard on her directorial debut with Shamitabh as the lead, does the world ever get to know the decoding of Shamitabh… is what forms the rest of the film.
R. Balki, who had earlier directed the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in two of the path breaking films viz., CHEENI KUM and PAA, has really tried his best to continue this ‘tradition’ with SHAMITABH as well. Even though Balki has tried his level best to define every moment of the film, the viewers may find something amiss (esp. in the second half). The characters in the film are very relatable and very real, however, the film’s weak storyline falters the film. While he establishes all the characters reasonably well in the first half, the dragging second half seems to take the steam off. The ego battle between the characters shall appeal to niche audiences, if not the masses.
As far as the performances are concerned, there are absolutely no points in guessing as to who is the captain of this ship… it’s the actor par excellence Amitabh Bachchan, who delivers yet another performance of his lifetime with SHAMITABH. With his baritone voice and a towering persona to match, he takes his character to dizzying heights. His camaraderie with Dhanush’s character in the film is really something that needs to be seen to be believed. Although he has done the drunkard acts in many films before, in SHAMITABH, he plays an old frustrated alcoholic with so much conviction. As far as Dhanush, the ‘other’ hero of the film, is concerned, he manages to stand his own ground despite the towering presence of Bachchan. Akshara Haasan makes an impressive debut with a stunning performance. Full credit goes to R. Balki for extracting a superlative performance out of this newcomer. Full marks to her stylist for making her look so effortlessly elegant (esp. her in a pixie cut a la international celebs like Kiera Knightley, Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathway). Even though there are many known names (Mahesh Bhatt, Karan Johar, Anurag Basu, Raj Kumar Hirani, Rohit Shetty, Ekta Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Boney Kapoor, Gauri Shinde and even Abhishek Bachchan) who do a cameo in the film, it is Rekha’s cameo that will get huge applause in the cinema halls. It is to be seen to believe.
The music (Ilayaraja, it’s also his 1000th film as a composer) of the film oscillates between being average and above average. Lyricist Swanand Kirkire’s simple and situational lyrics more or less complement Ilaiyaraja’s music and the film’s script. The film just would not have been what it is, had it not been for cinematography by P.C. Sreeram. The editing (Hemanti Sarkar) is average.
On the whole, SHAMITABH has an out-of-the-box and unusual plot that will appeal only to a niche audience. Go for it only if you are a hardcore Bachchan fan.
The problem with Balki as a filmmaker is he comes up with really interesting ideas but backs them up with such lame scripts that it’s hard to take him seriously beyond a point. His films as a result lose steam once the idea wears off.
While the exchanges between Tabu and Amitabh were heartwarming initially in CK, the film became a boring please-the-dad film by the end of it. For Paa, similarly, it was all about the bastard child wanting their parents to unite after the first half. He must realise that films are not about ideas but a strong and steady screenplay. Incidentally the best film I have seen from his stable is English Vinglish, which was not directed by him.
Baby At 68.5 Crore In Two Weeks

Baby grossed 16.50 crore nett in week two taking its two week business to 68.50 crore nett. The drop in week two was a little under 70% which is pretty good if the film was collecting well. The second week numbers came mainly from multiplexes as single screens hardly collected in week two.
The best circuits remain Mumbai and Mysore with Mumbai being around 25 crore nett in two weeks and in Mysore its heading to be the biggest Akshay Kumar grosser ever with likely business to end around 5.50 crore nett.
The other circuits have not performed especially Delhi NCR and East Punjab which is a must if the film is depending on multiplexes. If the film continues with 70% drops over the next two weeks it will finish at around 75 crore nett.
With 85 cr nett quoted by Taran Adarsh and producers, the difference between BOI and them have widened to close to RS 20 cr.
Producers have already called it a success. Seems to be going S26 way.
BOI had turned around S26 status from flop to semi hit, will they do again?
Shamitabh Decent At South Multiplexes Dull Overall

Shamitabh had a decent opening in the multiplexes of South India but was dull elsewhere. Some multiplexes in Bangalore saw a 30% start but on an all India basis the occupancies are around 10-15%.
The film probably had more face value for the audience in the South as it stars a South Indian star. Also the previous films of the director have done better in the South be it Cheeni Kum or Paa, The collections in the multiplexes of Mumbai and Delhi were dull with former being a bit better. The film has a very good release at multiplexes with most properties giving the film 2-3 shows.
The other releases like Hum Tum Dushman Dushman and Jai Jawan Jai Kisaan opened to empty houses at the few theatres where they were released.
Ah Samar you are back man!!!! Whenever Amitabh and money are spoken of in the same line, you just jump out of the genie bottle!! Missed you. Completely with you bro. I think they producers are actually paying money to the public to go and see the movie.
Saw Shamitabh today. Will try and say more on this later, but as things stand of now I will simply say that I found the film tough to “like”. This is a far away the weakest film Balki has made on narrative grounds. And because Balki completely avoids catharsis of any sort in the film, it’s tough to “feel” for the story in any sense (this wasn’t a problem at all in Paa, actually not even in Cheeni Kum). IMO the best way of enjoying and accessing this film is treating it as some sort of light (if bittersweet) comedy- anything else and there is a chance one would come out disappointed. Some of the writing is plain amateurish (especially after the interval) and wish they would have taken someone else than Akshara (who is just insipid). That being said, I think at some levels this is Balki’s most thoughtful work till now (and I am not just talking about the central conceit- which incidentally is exactly what one could infer from the trailer, and no this isn’t a spoiler- but also about how the film decides to handle that conceit with a very light touch. Infact the “style” of the narrative is what Balki has experimented with, perhaps the “ventriloquism’ angle doesn’t go well with this sort of very minimal, undramatic style and that’s why I guess Balki decided to shoehorn some very mawkish, ham-fisted scenes in the narrative just to build some tension). Bachchan is in fine form here (though again it’s not the kind of performance one can easily take to. In some ways it runs the danger of coming across as hammy, but it is also a masterfully “controlled” performance though nowhere in the league of Paa forget Aks, Khakee, Black and Eklavya), but I really enjoyed Dhanush (his entire physique and persona is suited for this role)…incidentally wish Balki would have had lot more (or atleast lot more ‘good scenes’) scenes with Bachchan and Dhanush together because they make a superb pair. I will say this- this might be a misfire (actually this “is” a misfire) but it’s also the sort of misfire the makers shouldn’t be ashamed of making. And while I believe the film is a goner at Box Office, I sincerely hope that it give rise to some sort of sincere, educated discussion- Shamitabh deserves that. Even if folks abhors the film, it’s sort the work (a patchy work no doubt) which needs to be taken seriously (even if I am in no danger of calling it a “good” film as of now though I will prefer this sort of a failure than Shankar’s “I”).
Incidentally the Piddly song is beautifully and (imaginatively) filmed- one of the flourishes which the director pulls off with aplomb.
Also hope Satyam, Q and GF do give their views as and when they see it. And definitely waiting for Rangan’s review (his will be the one to watch out to form)

What a film man. After OMG, special 26, Holiday and now Baby, Akshay is creating an amazing mass of work now in a very short span of time.
The hall was 90% full in an evening show and most in the audience were loving it.
The movie is a HIT and hats off to Neeraj Pandey for making another amazing movie, his best ever.
Akshay Kumar’s fan need to rejoice.

He reviews all those movies within those genres/framework. I, Haider, PK completely on the mark to be honest. I am not going to watch Tevar/Hawaizada, so I don’t know if he is right or not.
Utkal: This is precisely why Rangan’s views are so important to me- the fact that he was quick to spot the good bits about Hawaizaada and Tevar (here he said that the director is the one to watch out for) even while he found the final products quite pedestrian. It’s very easy to dismiss a film which hasn’t worked for you (and sadly just about every other critic in India is guilty of it), we are seeing the same in case of Shamitabh (where the negative reviews, while not being completely negative, are also not saying anything really insightful. Infact apart from the one by Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath review, which Satyam has posted, all the other reviews are sounding alike). And whether one agrees or disagrees with Rangan on the films you have mentioned, all his reviews he makes for an insightful reading. PK is actually quite formulaic though Rangan also makes the point that it is an important work (and that he quite liked it). With Haider he also called it a brilliant/very good film (though I admit his footnote-heavy characterisation seemed quite lazy especially for a film which is anything but lazy). I think 99.9% of I’s biggest supporters would agree that it was exhausting to say the least. Actually even Shamitabh goes on for too long.
Baby I found immensely overrated (though there is nothing wrong with the politics of the film, there is nothing communal/anti-secular about it. Infact if anything it is far more safer film on this score than the others in the genre. Saibal Chatterjee and others were plain wrong in this regard). The opening action sequence is well done, but that’s about it (and it made Special 26 look like a classic). It did however serve one purpose- which was to remind me how good “D-Day” was (this film is criminally underrated and under-seen). Actually once you take the genre into account, I think Holiday was a better film than Baby. I am actually quite looking forward to Akshay’s Ramanna remake- I believe Ramanna (inspite of starring Vijaykanth whom I found tough to stomach..though that’s the only film of the actor I have seen) is Murugadoss’ best work- lean, narrative-driven solid Masala film.
Ramana and Dheena are his best work. All his films after Ghajini, Kaththi and Thupakki, their respective remakes included, are not upto his earlier films which lacked all multiplex cliches.
Didn’t like Dheena (I have only seen a handful of Ajith’s films and the ones I have liked are Vaali, Mankatha, Mugavaree, Citizen, Billa and Amarakalam. Even enjoyed the very offensive Varalaru primarily because of Ajith. Haven’t seen Kadhal Kottai, Aasai etc. Also really want to watch both Yennai Arindhaal and the earlier Aarambam). I like Ramanna and the Hindi Ghajini a lot (though I enjoyed the Tamil version as well, just not as much Hindi one). I also quite enjoyed Thupakki (the only Vijay film I have ever enjoyed) and Holiday as well. And while didn’t care for the rest of the film, the historical portions of 7Aum Arivu were fabulous.
Kadhal kottai, Aasai, Kandukondeim kandukondein, Villain are all worth watching along with YA and Aarambam. I guess says more about Ajith than Vijay, who despite all his success, makes crappy films mostly.
I’ve never been an Ajith fan but liked some of the older stuff, have a great weakness for Mugavari. And Citizen though not a great film overall is fantastic in terms of the flashback ‘trauma’. One of the most effective such sequences I’ve ever seen in an Indian film.
Even Shankar can’t save Bachchan now as he is a big zero at boxffice. If you multiply anything with zero that automatically becomes zero. My source told me that Bachchan is trying to get Hrithik on the board so that he can do a film with him. But the problem is Hrithik has no time as he is busy with future classic Mohonjodaro.
As for shamitabh– an all India basis the occupancies are around 10-15%….
hope it picks up though but this is really abysmal even keeping in mind the genre etc–its balki after pas, gauri shinde after EV and dhanush after ranjhanna with amitabh in a strong role..

Umm..Akshay wasn’t there in A Wednesday. Special 26 was in early 2013, Holiday was middle of 2014, Baby is certainly this year and Airlift hasn’t released yet. So that’s one “good” (!) film in one year, right?! 🙂
The best portions of Shamitabh are in the initial 30 minutes, where Dhanush’s obsession with acting and cinema makes him watch Parinda and other hindi films and mimic Brando and Ledger before running to Mumbai to meet the big names in the hindi film industry.
The choice of movie posters in his villa was more interesting than the actual film.
Dhanush’s performance was exemplary, though the director doesn’t know what to do with him in the second half.
Amitabh gets hammier as the film progresses. He ceases to interest, and the director needs to be blamed for making a Bachchan performance boring and laden with a caricature of his own self.
Akshara is cute but has a weird sense of dialogue delivery.
The film stretches beyond patience and in an effort to make it unpredictable, Balki goes haywire in a film that meanders aimlessly.
A classic case of a great idea gone wrong in amateurish hands.
Actors like Amitabh and Dhanush need great directors, not people who think out-of-the-box and that is the end of road for them.
Im sure this film wouldve sounded better on paper than the result. Thats what Balki is. Theoretically his ideas and narration might make it look like the best thing on planet, but things don’t translate particularly well on screen.
No, I am not that kind of an actor who gets into the character so much. I just don’t get too deep into a role to affect me once I leave the set. I personally feel that actors fake it when they say that they got depressed after doing a role. I don’t know what actors mean when they say ‘Arey yaar, main character ke andar itna ghoos gaya hoon that I cannot come out. It’s taken me three months to come out of the character.’ I can understand if they say they were affected for a day or two perhaps…
I remember reading about this scene between Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. They had a scene together where Pacino had to pant as if he had come running and deliver his lines to De Niro. So, Pacino went a long distance, ran and came running but when he reached his spot, he forgot his lines. Again he went back and ran a kilometre and he messed up his line. So then he was about to go behind and De Niro caught his hand, and said “Listen now can you try acting?” My approach is the same. Act like you have run and come. You don’t have to actually run. So don’t get into the part to the point it spills into your life. It’s called acting. So just act!
So you are saying no role has ever affected you that much?
I have played many disturbing characters whether it’s Sangharsh or Janwaar… and nothing affected me more than a day. If you see Marlon Brando, all these big actors, the so-called kings of acting, you will never hear them talking like this. It’s okay I can understand if you say that I am still feeling that character for a day… but after that, chal na, abhi khatam ho gaya.

What is easy for Akki is almost impossible for many others. With an avalanche of superior films he is justified in these statements. All eyes on Gabbar now. Baby is now getting a 3rd watch by me. Each time the film grows and has something new to offer. Hope this is last time.

That it is a ‘ solid entertainer with a semblance of reality’? And on I that ‘ it was exhausting and that Shankar was insensitive to transgenders? And on Haider that the Kasmir details weakened the story, while it was just the opposite? Frankly, I got a lot more insights from Qalandar’s write up on Haider and Satyam’s write up on ‘I’, Namrata Joshi’s review of Baby and Chndrahs Choudhury’s write up on Pk in BloombergView.
We just cant depend on one reviewer however great he or she is. Every reviewer has some quirkiness sometimes and well hidden prejudices. And sometimes they want to surprise their admirers. There is no consistency and one cant expect it from them.
Shamitabh is an original, bittersweet fable about the magic of cinema, the giddy ride of fame and the downfall that inevitably arrives when hubris and ego get in the way. Dhanush plays Daanish, a mute bus conductor from Igatpuri who is obsessed with cinema.
‘Shamitabh’ review: Performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush save the film
Despite the premise the biggest drawback of the film is its pace. The tussle between the leads is too dragged out and one does not really know whether their one-upmanship has any end. It feels as if the script writers tried to overplay the bit for some unknown reason. Also the passionate actor that was seen in Daanish as a child failed to show in the blockbusters that he starred in, which was a disappointment. There are quite a few places where the film slows down and you wish that the editing table was a little more brutal in cutting out unnecessary bits. The film would have probably struck a chord with the audience if only it were at least 45 minutes shorter but Balki as usual takes too long to bring the film to a climax and there it loses its charm.
This movie needs to be watched for the fabulous performances of Amitabh and Dhanush, and for the unique story. One wonders what could have been if there was crispier editing.
Shamitabh First Day Business

Shamitabh grossed 3.50 crore nett apprx on day one which is a poor figure and the film will be depending on big growth over the weekend and then a strong hold on Monday.
The collections in most circuits were low but the film was helped slightly by Mysore and Tamil Nadu / Kerala which contributed around 20% of its all India business when normally the contribution is around 6-7%. the mass circuits were poor with places like Rajasthan and CI having similar numbers to last weeks Khamoshiyan.
Mumbai grossed around 1.25 crore nett while Delhi/UP was around 60 lakhs nett. East Punjab was 30 lakhs nett and Mysore was better than East Punjab which hardly ever happens with collections of 35 lakhs nett plus.
3.5 Cr is a decent /above avg collection for a film like shamitabh. In Blore today’s collection is very good….If all india trend is same then, today it should collect 6 to 7 Cr.
this is really cool. It’s not really “prestigious” by any means though. It usually has a lot of B and C grade stars and former sports athletes. The game is in New York/Brooklyn this year. Kevin Hart is the only “big name”. He has been in this game for the past couple years. A lot of players take it seriously…so he better know how to hoop! lol. I know Abhishek is a huge Lakers fan and a Magic Johnson fan…so I’ll root for him!
Just came back from Shamitabh .. Surprisingly for me this is Balki’s best work. It has unique story, staller performances, good background music, quirky dialogues, good screenplay .. movie has more depth and better script than earlier two movies. Yes there are flaws, it could have been much better .. Ego clash stretched after a point. But still i enjoyed movie .. having said we were gang of 6 people .. and except me rest had mixed views. But i came back home very satisfied.

The latest setback is, Salman Khan has taken huge offence to the titillating tamasha and has ticked off Karan Johar in no uncertain terms.
A close buddy of Salman spilled the beans when he revealed, “Salman doesn’t entertain or tolerate any kind of chichoraapan (vulgar behaviour) in public. He does a lot of mazaa-masti with friends in private. But in public his conduct is impeccable.”
Apparently Salman Khan was livid when his dear sister Arpita was named at the Roast. Though the offensive portions were removed from the show when it was edited for Youtube, Salman is still very upset over the whole issue.
Says a source, “Salman called up and gave Karan a piece of his mind. Salman told Karan in no uncertain terms that he found all the on-stage humour distasteful and unacceptable. He also threatened to walk of Karan’s film Shuddhi.”
Whether Salman Khan will finally simmer down and be pacified by Karan remains to be seen. But at the moment the superstar is in no mood to relent.

Mr. Hirani has spoken to me about making Sanjay Dutt’s biopic and that is very exciting to me. Sanjay Dutt has been family to me and I have been a fan of his. He is the only one whose poster I had in my cupboard. My sister had Salman Khan’s poster and I had Sanjay Dutt’s. And while playing Sanjay Dutt will be exciting for me, Mr. Hirani has not confirmed that to me yet. Raju Hirani is not a director who you can keep calling and asking, if that film is happening or not.

Yes. Biopics are tricky. When you announce it, it sounds fine, but to make a film on a celebrity with a large body of work is very hard. You can’t do birth to death. There have to be certain chapters of his life that are engaging, that have to be flagpole moments of a person’s life that need to be captured. It’s tricky because it also has to be seamless. Anurag Basu also wants to make Kishore Kumar’s biopic and we actually wanted to make it before Barfi, but then Barfi happened. And now Jagga Jasoos has happened. Biopics are very hard to write. These big directors understand that. A biopic has to celebrate their lives as best as possible. It has to entertain, at the same time, it does not have to be a propaganda film. It has to be honest and you have to portray them as grey, as who they really are. We all are grey. It’s not supposed to glorify somebody, it’s supposed to glorify someone’s human side.

Shamitabh showed growth of 20% plus on Saturday as Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and Mysore saw some decent growth. Mysore which had decent start managed to grow but Tamil Nadu / Kerala and Nizam / Andhra which had fair start dropped on Saturday. The film had to be around 5 crore nett on saturday if it was to have a chance at the box office. The first two day business of Shamitabh is as follows.

It’s not very often that Hollywood unleashes two major theatrical bombs over the same weekend. But that’s what happened when “Jupiter Ascending” and “Seventh Son” both crashed and burned in U.S. theaters on Friday.
Warner Bros.’ “Jupiter Ascending,” starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, is quickly dropping in estimates to a thin $18 million weekend at the box office. With a budget north of $175 million, the Wachowskis sci-fi fantasy tentpole could lose tens of millions barring a dramatic turnaround overseas.
The forecast for Universal and Legendary’s long-delayed “Seventh Son,” starring Jeff Bridges, is just as gloomy. The medieval fantasy tentpole has already projected a loss of $85 million, as Variety exclusively reported this week, despite earning $82 million at the international box office. It’s on track for only $6.6 million in its U.S. debut.
Neither of the b.o. calamities are entirely surprising–both big-budget movies were long-delayed due to poor tracking and Paramount’s “The Spongebob Movie,” which is soaking up $53 million this weekend, was originally projected to win the weekend. Still, the lousy performances are a black eye for investors and filmmakers.
Saw Shamitabh… very good watch. I’m surprised by negative reviews and response as this is well made movie and actually slightly better than both Chini Kum and Paa. The concept is great but as every Balki’s movie, the screenplay is about average but engaging nevertheless. Both Dhanush and Amitabh’s performances make the movie worthy to watch. Can’t imagine SRK in Dhanush’s role(original choice) at all, Dhanush owed the role completely. Amitabh is excellent and simply great towards the end scenes. Overall, the movie will do well and even if not will do well on satellite and TV audience. Worthy to join Amitabh’s list of good movies.
so far the opening and trending are more or less in line with what one can expect from Balki. Unless of course Sun is poorer than expected. Which I doubt. What’s different though is that the reviews have not at all been the way they were for his earlier two films. But it could be that this is a film which doesn’t appeal to those who liked CK and Paa (I’d count myself within this group, haven’t had a chance to see Shamitabh yet but somehow I’ve not quite got the Balki vibe here barring the first song trailer) and on the other hand those who didn’t like these films very much warm up more to the current film (I’ve anecdotally had some confirmation of this including on this blog). In any case one way or the other what’s clear is that Balki is never going to be the sort of director who delivers a major grosser or something. Which is fine of course except that he quite often gets a rough shake then by the trade. And this again gets me to my old point. Somehow Jai Ho can be considered half-decent at 100 crores or whatever based on pricing issues while Shamitabh has to do 70% of that (or something) to be considered the same. Doesn’t make any sense. That on a smaller film like this and with a subject like distributors more or less spend as much as they do on Jai Ho! I could multiply the examples but for many years now I’ve seen these things. In any case Shamitabh still has a long way to go. It will need to remain rather stable at its lower end.
This is likely to continue till producers reveal the cost of All India distributors right for their films. As 90% of Hindi films and 75% of big budget star studded films are made from black money, this is unlikely to happen.
I am going second time today .. and i tell you, Shamitabh is addictive movie for bachchan fans. This is already in my books of top 5 bachchan movies post 2000 ..
Gemini Productions has bought the remake rights of this bilingual film and Kamal will be playing the lead in the Telugu version as well. The shoot is expected to commence in a couple of months.

Shamitabh had a poor weekend grossing around 12.75 crore nett over its first weekend. The start was low and although there was growth over the weekend it was limited growth. The daily weekend business of Shamitabh is as follows.

I went with my wife and parents-in-law, and barely 15 hours after I got off a long flight: my father-in-law was able to forgive the film everything because of Amitabh, but none of the rest of us were so generous. In fact I would say our Bachchan love made us more pissed, because more should have been done with this material! In particular, the way “Piddly” was used in the film was just… tonally “off” (I can’t say more without giving it away). Even Dhanush was way, WAY better used in Raanjhanaa than here.

‘I’ – 200 crores worldwide gross and ‘Adhukkum Mela’

Shankar – Vikram’s ‘I’ crossed the 25 days mark yesterday. The film released on 14th Jan in Tamil and Telugu and soon had its Hindi version released as well. The worldwide screen count was massive and the film was subsequently seen by audiences once, twice and ‘adhukkum mela’ for Vikram’s monstrous hard work and the make-up magic.
The film kept pulling in audiences, and the Tamil version particularly collected very big at the box-office. Even after Yennai Arindhaal, ‘I’ continues to hold on to a decent chunk of shows.
Interestingly, the worldwide gross of ‘I’ from all its three versions is more than 200 crores, which is a whopping figure by any margin. Shankar – Rajini’s Enthiran is the only other South Indian film to cross the 200 crores worldwide gross mark. Remarkable indeed …
Yennai Arindhaal – Massive opening at the TN box office

Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal opened on Feb 5 Thursday and went on to register a blockbuster opening on Day 1 with houseful shows all over. The initial reviews were mostly positive and Ajith was accepted in a starkly different avatar by both his fans and the general audience at large. The film had a very strong Gautham Menon stamp with generous traces of his earlier hits.
At the box office in TN, the film is believed to have grossed around 20 crores after its first 2 days, with the first day gross being 11 crores. The opening has been good in Karnataka and the overseas markets too.
Yennai Arindhaal’s opening weekend Tamil Nadu box office collections

At the end of the 4 days’ opening weekend, Yennai Arindhaal is reported to have grossed around 30 to 31 crores in Tamil Nadu. This is a very healthy figure and compares well with the other recent Tamil biggies. The film hasn’t been given the entertainment tax exemption and consequently the net would be lesser than the gross.
In Chennai city, as reported earlier, the film grossed around 2.93 crores after the first 4 days. We have to see how the film holds on, in the days to come. Stay tuned.
Thala Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal is holding well at the box office and now the makers have decided to trim six minutes of the film. Sources say that as majority of the audience feel that in the first half is slow paced , they have chopped Anushka’s introduction song portions in the film.
Mean time, the film is doing humongous business at the USA box office. The film has grossed nearly 415k US $ till Saturday which means it has crossed the lifetime business of Arrambam which is around 380k$.
Previously Arrambam was Ajith’s best film at the US box office, now Yennai Arindhaal broke it in just 3 days (Premiere + 2 days ). Directed by Gautham Menon, Yennai Arindhaal also has Trisha, Anushka, Arun Vijay and Vivek to its star cast.
Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan will have three releases in 2015 which includes Uttama Villain, Papanasam and Vishwaroopam-2.
The latest buzz in K-town is that Gemini Film circuit has bought the remake rights of Rajkumar Hiran’s Aamir Khan starrer PK which grossed 600 crores at the box office.
Reports suggest that GFC has approached Kamal Haasan to reprise the role done by Aamir Khan and the actor has given his nod for the Tamil-Telugu bilingual. Earlier, Gemini Film Circuit remade Rajkumar Hirani’s Munnabhai MBBS and 3 Idiots as Vasool Raja MBBS and Nanban respectively.
Mean time, GFC is also facing a tough financial crisis in releasing Vishal’s Madha Gaja Raja and now the big question is, will it be possible for the production house to fund the remake of PK involving massive budget?
AP International is providing the Tamil DVD of the film (in case one doesn’t follow the language, the subtitles should be very easily available on the net separately). I am not sure if the Hindi DVD is out though.
Watched Shamitabh second time and loved it even more .. Never knew this is going to happen. This movie not even giving time to think about its flaws if any .. i mean you got to so much involved in magical performances .. that you want more and more, even if it dragged. Some of its scene are delivered in such a stunning way that no award can justify its outstanding status and never seen before impact. This is definitely best bachchan performance post 1990 Agneepath. I definitely going to keep every format of movie at home. I am simply proud. What a start of 2015 …. I hope at BO, Shamitabh will find some appreciation, if not .. even then it will be always remember as one of best bachchan movies.
We have learnt from confirmed sources that Kunal Kapoor and Naina Bachchan married each other last night in a very private way in the presence of their family at the idyliic island of Seychelles.
We learnt that they had a beach ceremony. They had also got engaged earlier in a very private way and thus this comes as no surprise. We learnt that they were introduced to each other by Naina’s first cousin, the lovely Shweta Bachchan Nanda and we believe that they are likely to host a reception in Delhi when they return. Wishing Kunal and Naina a happy married life.

Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack: Ellie Goulding song ‘Love Me Like You Do’ named fastest-selling single of the year.
The track, which features on the soundtrack for the screen adaptation of EL James’ best-selling trilogy, went to Number One yesterday, knocking Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” from the top spot after seven weeks.
Ps: The song is not great shakes musically (infact has a generic unremarkable tone to it on first hearing) has the sort of knack /rhythm that picks up. Considering it is the film’s 3rd Week at the Box Office, Akshay Kumar’s Baby maintained a good pace even in the week days. The movie, as per early estimates, made a business of around 0.80 crores on its 3rd Monday, taking its total collections to 90.40 crores nett at the Box Office in India.
The movie is currently the Highest Grosser of 2015. However, biggies like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Main Gabbar, Brothers, Fan et al, which are lined up in the forthcoming months, will soon beat Baby‘s collections.
The film has been reportedly made on a budget of around 60 crores. Thus, this Akshay Kumar starrer is already a Plus affair!
Varun Dhawan to work in sequel to Akshay Kumar’s Baby?
Director Neeraj Pandey’s latest release, Baby, has received several encouraging reviews. So, it comes as no surprise that the makers of the Akshay Kumar-starrer — Bhushan Kumar and Neeraj — are looking forward to teaming up again for a sequel. However, the news doing the rounds now is that Varun Dhawan might join the cast for the second part.
It’s believed that the young actor has already been approached and things are “most likely to work out”. “Although Varun’s date diary is packed right now, the makers are keen on having him on board,” says a source.
Akshay, who has given his nod for the film, might also be indirectly responsible for Varun’s inclusion. “Varun has known Akshay since he was a kid, as the senior actor has done many films with David Dhawan (Varun’s father and director),” says the source.
The Baby sequel is expected to hit theatres around Republic Day in 2017. Neeraj will start working on it as soon as he finishes work on MS Dhoni biopic, which stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role.
Chennai Box-Office – Feb 6 to 8

The Chennai box-office boomed last week as the ‘King of Opening’ Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal released on Thursday, February 5. The film has taken a very good opening and garnered a four-day gross of approximately Rs 3 Crore from Chennai city.
Yennai Arindhaal is the clear No.1 at CBO this week helped by a large number of screens and Ajith’s screen presence. The film has got decent reviews but some of the fans feel it is a mixture of the director’s earlier cop films.
At No.2 is Shankar’s I, steady and strong at the box-office in its fourth week. But I suffered as it was shifted from bigger screens to the smaller screens to accommodate the Ajith starrer.
In the 3rd place is Dhanush’s second Hindi release, Shamitabh, which took a decent opening due to its southern names in its cast and technician list.
At No.4 is GV Prakash’s Darling, which can now be termed a super hit as it has already covered its cost from theatricals alone.
And in the 5th place is SJ Surya’s Isai, which carries ok reports but due to its length is not being preferred by multiplex managers. It is also playing at the smallest of screens.
Sadly in US, you have to follow what police says, especially your hand should be visible all the time; You can sue them later but if you don’t follow, your life could be in danger.
All 3 Khans are showing their age vis-a-vis the AIB Roast. Total disconnect from the young happening crowd. Time for all 3 to hang their boots and ride into the sunset. Aaj ki Aap generation will not take kindly to such restrictions on freedom of speech.
Again people are picking up the convenient part to sensationalise and scandalise Aamir’s comment as if he asked for the ban, but he just aired his opinion with regard to AIB Roast and also spoke against witch hunting and any ban and freedom of speech to those who participated in the roast. He was candid and unequivocal in his opinion and it must be noted that he said it many times that he was speaking for himself as there were youngsters who liked the show but he didn’t, his fault was that he was not diplomatic as he stated what he felt and that’s his biggest folly and drawback which makes him an easy and soft target. Listen from 1:01:05 onward where he makes his stand on the controversy very clear.
Not an Aamir fan but he’s so right here. Roasts are fine, but the AIB was offensive. And if the “youth” thinks that jokes insulting gays and making fun of dark people are funny then shame on the youth, they need the older generation to instill some sense of right into them. Nothing wrong with having a roast, making fun of stars, swearing etc but there is a problem with making fun of dark people and gays. And the Farida Jalal joke was disgusting.
And there is no comparison between Delhi Belly and AIB. None of Delhi Belly’s jokes really targeted a group of people. Plus Aamir was defending freedom of speech from the beginning of his comment.

It is an individual opinion. Many people would be offended by Delhi Belly and some would be even offended by Alok Nath’s Sanskari jokes. We are different people. So should we stop ? I was thinking that if aamir is targetted definitely his height and his ears would have been made fun of. SRK’s films like HNY and his awards would have been made fun of. Bachchan’s humility and his political friendhips would have been targetted. Salman’s tryst with court cases against him and his acting abilities. But Karan Johar will be careful. He will pickup small celebrities. He has no guts to take on big ones. He will stop at some point. So I dont see any future in such roasts. Indians are sensitive and take offence easily.
First on the roast, it was a poor copy of the Comedy Central roasts that they have in U.S every year. All kinds of abusive language is used there they are a million times much funnier then the poor show they put in AIB!
Second, Not sure all these guys who are speaking against Aamir in regards to Delhi Belly even understand real life from reel life. So instead of defending your act, you will go after Aamir for a freakin movie which, and it’s worth repeating, was a effin movie! You can go after Aamir for freedom of speech (which he clearly defended in the above video) but why is everyone jumping on him for Delhi Belly?? That was movie where, from what I recall, no segment of society was attacked in any way. When you do a roast like this in US, no one cares. When you do it in a country like India, expect some backlash. Not everyone is a fan of these type of jokes. Aamir has every right to speak again them but at no point did I see him talking about banning them.
And to top that look at the hypocrisy by Deepika and Sonakshi as they were the ones who were offended by TOI pics and KRK tweets respectively, but here they are seen enjoying worst kind of outrageous remarks and expletives being exchanged in the name of JOKES? Even i didn’t like Aamir’s lame defense for his title song in Delhi Belly, but it wasn’t thrown at any one specifically, but at the AIB what they were doing was really stupid, nuisance, bereft of inducing any laughter whatsoever. Had they put in a little situations to insert their muck and filth in it, it would have been much easier to digest the act but what they were doing was just hurling abuses, expletives, cussing and making idiotic lewd comments on women, LGBT and full of racism.
I really find the concept of these abuses very sexist as they always are pointed towards women and are made to showcase the MASCULINITY of men!! Why are there no expletive or cuss words derogating men’s weaknesses and frailties because this was, is and will remain male dominated world and so will these kinds of male chauvinistic tendencies. Until the real egalitarian society emeges, i do not see end to this colossal anomaly tilted in favour of male.

The first year in any professional college will make you immune to any kind of abuse. Anyone who has done professional degree (Engineering, medical..) will say the abuses in roast are pedestrian!

The music has done well but visually it is not looking good which todayis of huge importance as the songs have to look good on screen to help a film in a big way.
The promos of the film do make it look like a Ranbir Kapoor cleverly giving less importance to actual male lead Arjun Rampal. Ranbir has not had a release for nearly 18 months and some of his fans may give it a go though with the access to media today many will know its not full out Ranbir Kapoor film.
Promotion by Ranbir Kapoor could have helped to get a few more footfalls. The film may just get one of the better starts of the year if Ranbir Kapoor factor works but that is not much considering what has happened over the last month or so. The other release MSG may have some takers around the Delhi and Haryana area.
It seems to be stable at the lower end. Obviously this isn’t close to enough. It would have to be dramatically stable in week 2 for the overall scenario to change on it.
Think having a May release is a rather smart move by Rathnam in a commercial sense (and it was also a wise decision by him to take Dulquer for a bilingual film considering Dulquer’s “Vaayi Moodi Pesavum” was a hit in Tamil Nadu. It also helps that after Ustad Hotel, Dulquer-Nithya is a rather hot pair) since apparently the lead pair here has another Malayalam rom-com “100 Days of Love” (poster for those interested- http://www.twitter.com/dulquersalmaan1/status/565606892970713088/photo/1 )releasing a couple of months before the Rathnam film. That being said I wish Rathnam would have picked Nivin Pauly over Dulquer if he wanted to go for a young Malayali actor. The guy is a far better actor and has a much greater range (not that I mind Dulquer).
Yes, I agree that Nivin’s certainly a better actor but I don’t think he has the market in Tamil that Dulquar would potentially have in spite of the partial success of Neram. Nithya certainly has a unique persona and it should be great to see her under Rathnam.
It will be entertaining to see how this will be received! Otherwise don’t care @ all about reviews esp for this sort of flick which is v easy to be criticised-either for not being ‘literature’ or for diluting or toning down ‘skin show’ or well, just being ‘porn’ ..
But interesting to see some finding merit in it (& they are NOT entirely negative & hey Kim kardashian loved it! Lol)

Why AIB has a right to roast (and why Aamir Khan is not right at all)

Raja Sen calls out Aamir Khan on his criticism of the controversial AIB Roast.
Truth alone triumphs.
That’s what Satyameva Jayate — a motto India’s founding fathers chose for her from the Upanishads, and one that has since been co-opted by Aamir Khan as a name for his philanthropic, awareness-building television show — means. This is why this piece should be one of fact over opinion.
And because that is a motto that bears repeating.
The fact is that All India Bakchod (AIB), a collective of four stand-up comedians with more foresight than their peers, got together and had a Bollywood Roast with several film folk participating and in attendance.
This is not, by any standard, a new or particularly original idea; the format of peers trading insults goes back a long, long way, and the first Roast to call itself that was held by The Friar’s Club in 1910.
Dean Martin made the format popular with an NBC series through the 1970s where he’d boozily wink and slay a group of celebrity friends. In the more recent past, the television channel Comedy Central made the format their own with a set of increasingly profane (and, as a result, increasingly harmless) shows.
The recent Comedy Central shows are what the AIB show is closest to in terms of tone and content and texture, and bully to them — as I said in a previous column celebrating the Roast — for pulling it off in the middle of a stuffy Hindi film industry too fearful of its self-image to actually have a good laugh.
“Pulling it off,” alas, turned out to be an unfortunately ominous bit of phrasing, considering that the comedians have since yanked the roast off YouTube, bowing to pressure from various easily-offended/politically-motivated extremist groups.
They have apologised repeatedly and tried to explain their lack of malicious intent, but the video stays removed while every talking head in the country has an opinion — mostly to do with what they thought of the roast, as opposed to how important it is to be able to do something like this, to keep the possibility of it alive.
The reaction to AIB’s removal of the roast and their heartfelt apologies, one of which specifically and puzzlingly singled out the entire Christian community, has been two-pronged, with most of their most-vocal supporters seemingly stung by this compliance.
‘How dare they?’ asks this incensed, self-righteous line of thinking. ‘We made them the posterboys for free-speech and look, they didn’t stand by their work.’
That is an argument so dunderheaded it hardly deserves an answer, but it is becoming increasingly clear we live in a country where we need to patiently explain our points as if reasoning with a dull six-year-old.
Just because they have “All India” in their name does not make AIB a political party. They were not voted into power and they have not made any pre-election promises; they have never asked for themselves to be made into these icons of free speech.
They’re just four funny boys who got together and tried to see how far Bollywood can take a joke; four boys who have formerly found themselves thwarted by Bollywood in the past, when they tried to write gags for the Filmfare Awards and were told each joke on a star must be approved by said star, and when they went to Yash Raj Films to make a spoof onDhoom 3 and were told to go home, leading to AIB’s first huge viral success.
So these four yuksters, these eye-rolling oft-retweeted one-liner superstars, managed to get Bollywood to laugh out loud and say some very rude things.
You may or may not like the roast, but by golly, these nuts managed to get away with a lot.
Or so it seemed.
Now, under political threat, threat from muscular Bollywood stars, possible physical threats of violence to the boys and their families, they backed down and took the video down.
Fair enough.
It’s their call, and before you start wishing for a martyr, take a minute to picture just how patently depressing the inside of a Mumbai police station is. These boys are shuttling between cops and lawyers and reading clauses and justifying themselves when all they’d rather do is tweet snarky things about how tremendously the BJP bungled up the Delhi election.
Our journalists, of course, are having a field day asking everyone they can see about the Roast and ‘freedom of expression’; yesterday afternoon at a press conference, they asked Sant Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan — the leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda and the actor-director of the upcoming MSG — what he thought of AIB and he, quite convincingly said he hadn’t seen any such video, but just hoped they didn’t show naked women or shameful activities.
In this, the Insan’s clearly personal opinion made more sense than that of Aamir Khan, who appeared out of the woodwork to condemn AIB, saying he didn’t find swearwords funny and that he found insult comedy ‘violent’ and that celebrities have a certain responsibility.
If this were just another fuddy-duddy actor, we’d have laughed it off.
He can’t stand swearing, we couldn’t stand Fanaa; he finds insult-comedy ‘violent’, we find his Christopher Nolan plagiarism ‘violent’, and so on.
But for Aamir Khan, the producer of Delhi Belly, to shame these boys — and the celebrities involved — for swearwords and insults, is the most hypocritical thing in the world.
It’s Kanye-level self-delusion.
Khan knew Delhi Belly would be brought up, and said, ‘I applied for an A certificate. I went out of my way during promotions to tell everyone that ours is an adult film, and don’t come watch it.’
But, Mr Khan, you didn’t do that with the songs, your very catchy Bhaag Bhaag DK Bose song — masking a profane term by breaking it down and switching it up, literally like making a song called Hole-***, Hole-***, Hole-*** — took a foul gaali and handed it to schoolkids via music videos and radio.
It became a massive sensation, you marketing genius you, and parents around the country ashamedly pretended they didn’t hear it.
Where was that responsibility then?
For someone like you to not shun the offended and instead take offence at the content, well, Mr Khan, is wholly asinine.
As for the fellows at AIB, I hope they’re silent because they’re keeping their heads down and using these trying times to generate new material.
I only hope they make it out mostly unscathed — and funnier than ever.

One thing that has always worked for films coming from the house of Balki and Gauri Shinde (English Vinglish) is originality. In that aspect, even Shamitabh is expected to deliver since it has a novel subject to it. Moreover, with Dhanush and Akhshara Haasan, there is freshness in cast too.

Initial feedback: good movie, bit slow, but hearing words like, Amitabh’s best performance till date, WOW, already booked tickets for FDFS tomorrow. So here is my BO predictions (producers / taran adarsh figures as i dont believe in BOI, who is always kind of biased towards bachchan movies). If rejected / not liked by audience: 25 to 30 Cr. Mixed / average: 50 Cr. Good /liked: 70 to 100 cr. So, seeing initial feedback, i am pretty sure this film will cross minimum of 50 Crore in domestic market.

‘I’ Box Office Collection: Vikram’s Flick Grosses ₹200 Crore Worldwide in 19 Days

The dream run of Vikram starrer “I” at box office has continued with the flick from three versions grossing ₹200 crore worldwide. It took 19 days to reach the mark.

A report on Andhra Box Office claims that “I” has crossed the 200-crore mark and the total gross of the movie by the end of 19 days is ₹202.95 crore. The major chunk of the business has come from Tamil Nadu where the Vikram’s movie has earned ₹74.06 crore (₹57.97 nett business).
The next big centre for “I” is Nizam/Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu version of the flick has made ₹40.19 crore from these two regions. The net collection is ₹34.45 crore. From Karnataka and Kerala, Shankar’s mega-budget movie has grossed ₹13.52 and ₹16.80 respectively. As per the trade analysts, very rarely a Tamil movie does better business in the God’s Own Country than the Garden City.
While “I” has made a net collection of ₹13.50 crore in Kerala, it has raked in ₹10.40 crore from Karnataka. From the four Southern states, the movie has grossed ₹144.57 crore and has netted ₹116.32 crore.
The Tamil and Telugu versions from rest of India have grossed ₹4.03 crore (₹3 crore nett) . The Hindi version of “I” has made a business of ₹16.25 (₹12.20 crore nett) to take its total tally to ₹164.85 (₹131.52 nett) in India.
In the overseas market, “I” has performed exceptionally well in US and Malaysia. From US and Canada, it has raked in ₹10.03 crore, ₹3.51 crore from the UK, ₹1.81 crore from Australia/New Zealand, ₹12.50 crore Malaysia and an estimate of ₹10.25 crore from rest of the world to make ₹202.95 crore gross worldwide.
This by any margin is the biggest for a Vikram movie. However, the response for “I” is steady in many key centres and the movie has continued to pull audience to theatres. We have to wait and watch if the movie will retain good occupancy this week as Ajith’s “Yennai Arindhaal” is releasing on 5 February.

Bollywood is one place which is always open to any kind of permutations and combinations. Be it the casting in the films or even the selection of the film’s titles, Bollywood has seen it all happen! This week’s release goes by the name of SHAMITABH, which when decoded, is the combination of Dhanu’sh’ and ‘Amitabh’, who also happen to be the lead stars in the film, which is directed by R. Balki. Does the film live up to the hype? Let’s analyze.
The film starts off with the star studded premiere of LIFEBUOY, the debut film of ‘superstar’ Daanish (Dhanush). And at the time of Q & A with the media persons, when a certain journalist asks him a certain question, this makes Daanish recall his journey from being a cinema-obsessed small town kid who was born dumb to what he is today, the superstar ‘Shamitabh’. The journey also shows his desperate attempts to become a star, despite his handicap. As any other cinema fanatic, Daanish too seizes an opportunity to come to Mumbai to realize his dreams of being a ‘star’… only to be shooed away from every studio he visits (read ‘gatecrashes’). Seizing a perfect chance, he starts ‘living’ in an actor’s vanity van! And when he gets caught by the security guards, he tries to explain his aspirations of being an actor, which makes all the security guards laugh at him. Amidst all this, the film’s Assistant Director Akshara (Akshara Haasan) sees the burning passion in his eyes to become an actor, which impresses her to no extent. That’s when she decides to help him realize his dreams and thus puts him through her doctor uncle, who in turn, suggests a certain technological breakthrough in medical science through which a dumb person can actually speak! But the only condition is that the voice won’t be of his own but of another person. Thus starts the search for a ‘perfect voice’ for Daanish begins. After many a vocal auditions, it’s finally the drunkard Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), whose voice Akshara and Daanish choose. The deal is signed with Amitabh which states that he will have to remain silent about all this and not utter a word to anyone, against which he will be paid handsomely for being Daanish’s voice. Daanish, who then, rechristens himself as Shamitabh goes on to become an overnight sensation with a voice to match. Thus starts his journey into the skies. It is during this journey, when success actually goes into his head that he starts dictating terms to Amitabh, who also starts suffering from the same ego issues as Daanish. Amidst these clashes, there arrives a journalist who gets his hand on the much guarded secret about Shamitabh’s truth.
Does the journalist become successful in exposing the truth behind the real ‘Shamitabh’, who amongst the two (Daanish and Amitabh) agree to compromise with the other, where does the duo’s ego clashes leave Akshara who is working really hard on her directorial debut with Shamitabh as the lead, does the world ever get to know the decoding of Shamitabh… is what forms the rest of the film.
R. Balki, who had earlier directed the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in two of the path breaking films viz., CHEENI KUM and PAA, has really tried his best to continue this ‘tradition’ with SHAMITABH as well. Even though Balki has tried his level best to define every moment of the film, the viewers may find something amiss (esp. in the second half). The characters in the film are very relatable and very real, however, the film’s weak storyline falters the film. While he establishes all the characters reasonably well in the first half, the dragging second half seems to take the steam off. The ego battle between the characters shall appeal to niche audiences, if not the masses.
As far as the performances are concerned, there are absolutely no points in guessing as to who is the captain of this ship… it’s the actor par excellence Amitabh Bachchan, who delivers yet another performance of his lifetime with SHAMITABH. With his baritone voice and a towering persona to match, he takes his character to dizzying heights. His camaraderie with Dhanush’s character in the film is really something that needs to be seen to be believed. Although he has done the drunkard acts in many films before, in SHAMITABH, he plays an old frustrated alcoholic with so much conviction. As far as Dhanush, the ‘other’ hero of the film, is concerned, he manages to stand his own ground despite the towering presence of Bachchan. Akshara Haasan makes an impressive debut with a stunning performance. Full credit goes to R. Balki for extracting a superlative performance out of this newcomer. Full marks to her stylist for making her look so effortlessly elegant (esp. her in a pixie cut a la international celebs like Kiera Knightley, Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathway). Even though there are many known names (Mahesh Bhatt, Karan Johar, Anurag Basu, Raj Kumar Hirani, Rohit Shetty, Ekta Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Boney Kapoor, Gauri Shinde and even Abhishek Bachchan) who do a cameo in the film, it is Rekha’s cameo that will get huge applause in the cinema halls. It is to be seen to believe.
The music (Ilayaraja, it’s also his 1000th film as a composer) of the film oscillates between being average and above average. Lyricist Swanand Kirkire’s simple and situational lyrics more or less complement Ilaiyaraja’s music and the film’s script. The film just would not have been what it is, had it not been for cinematography by P.C. Sreeram. The editing (Hemanti Sarkar) is average.
On the whole, SHAMITABH has an out-of-the-box and unusual plot that will appeal only to a niche audience. Go for it only if you are a hardcore Bachchan fan.

The problem with Balki as a filmmaker is he comes up with really interesting ideas but backs them up with such lame scripts that it’s hard to take him seriously beyond a point. His films as a result lose steam once the idea wears off.
While the exchanges between Tabu and Amitabh were heartwarming initially in CK, the film became a boring please-the-dad film by the end of it. For Paa, similarly, it was all about the bastard child wanting their parents to unite after the first half. He must realise that films are not about ideas but a strong and steady screenplay. Incidentally the best film I have seen from his stable is English Vinglish, which was not directed by him.

Baby At 68.5 Crore In Two Weeks

Baby grossed 16.50 crore nett in week two taking its two week business to 68.50 crore nett. The drop in week two was a little under 70% which is pretty good if the film was collecting well. The second week numbers came mainly from multiplexes as single screens hardly collected in week two.
The best circuits remain Mumbai and Mysore with Mumbai being around 25 crore nett in two weeks and in Mysore its heading to be the biggest Akshay Kumar grosser ever with likely business to end around 5.50 crore nett.
The other circuits have not performed especially Delhi NCR and East Punjab which is a must if the film is depending on multiplexes. If the film continues with 70% drops over the next two weeks it will finish at around 75 crore nett.

Shamitabh Decent At South Multiplexes Dull Overall

Shamitabh had a decent opening in the multiplexes of South India but was dull elsewhere. Some multiplexes in Bangalore saw a 30% start but on an all India basis the occupancies are around 10-15%.
The film probably had more face value for the audience in the South as it stars a South Indian star. Also the previous films of the director have done better in the South be it Cheeni Kum or Paa, The collections in the multiplexes of Mumbai and Delhi were dull with former being a bit better. The film has a very good release at multiplexes with most properties giving the film 2-3 shows.
The other releases like Hum Tum Dushman Dushman and Jai Jawan Jai Kisaan opened to empty houses at the few theatres where they were released.

Saw Shamitabh today. Will try and say more on this later, but as things stand of now I will simply say that I found the film tough to “like”. This is a far away the weakest film Balki has made on narrative grounds. And because Balki completely avoids catharsis of any sort in the film, it’s tough to “feel” for the story in any sense (this wasn’t a problem at all in Paa, actually not even in Cheeni Kum). IMO the best way of enjoying and accessing this film is treating it as some sort of light (if bittersweet) comedy- anything else and there is a chance one would come out disappointed. Some of the writing is plain amateurish (especially after the interval) and wish they would have taken someone else than Akshara (who is just insipid). That being said, I think at some levels this is Balki’s most thoughtful work till now (and I am not just talking about the central conceit- which incidentally is exactly what one could infer from the trailer, and no this isn’t a spoiler- but also about how the film decides to handle that conceit with a very light touch. Infact the “style” of the narrative is what Balki has experimented with, perhaps the “ventriloquism’ angle doesn’t go well with this sort of very minimal, undramatic style and that’s why I guess Balki decided to shoehorn some very mawkish, ham-fisted scenes in the narrative just to build some tension). Bachchan is in fine form here (though again it’s not the kind of performance one can easily take to. In some ways it runs the danger of coming across as hammy, but it is also a masterfully “controlled” performance though nowhere in the league of Paa forget Aks, Khakee, Black and Eklavya), but I really enjoyed Dhanush (his entire physique and persona is suited for this role)…incidentally wish Balki would have had lot more (or atleast lot more ‘good scenes’) scenes with Bachchan and Dhanush together because they make a superb pair. I will say this- this might be a misfire (actually this “is” a misfire) but it’s also the sort of misfire the makers shouldn’t be ashamed of making. And while I believe the film is a goner at Box Office, I sincerely hope that it give rise to some sort of sincere, educated discussion- Shamitabh deserves that. Even if folks abhors the film, it’s sort the work (a patchy work no doubt) which needs to be taken seriously (even if I am in no danger of calling it a “good” film as of now though I will prefer this sort of a failure than Shankar’s “I”).
Incidentally the Piddly song is beautifully and (imaginatively) filmed- one of the flourishes which the director pulls off with aplomb.
Also hope Satyam, Q and GF do give their views as and when they see it. And definitely waiting for Rangan’s review (his will be the one to watch out to form)

Saw Baby for 2nd time.
What a film man. After OMG, special 26, Holiday and now Baby, Akshay is creating an amazing mass of work now in a very short span of time.
The hall was 90% full in an evening show and most in the audience were loving it.
The movie is a HIT and hats off to Neeraj Pandey for making another amazing movie, his best ever.
Akshay Kumar’s fan need to rejoice.

Utkal: This is precisely why Rangan’s views are so important to me- the fact that he was quick to spot the good bits about Hawaizaada and Tevar (here he said that the director is the one to watch out for) even while he found the final products quite pedestrian. It’s very easy to dismiss a film which hasn’t worked for you (and sadly just about every other critic in India is guilty of it), we are seeing the same in case of Shamitabh (where the negative reviews, while not being completely negative, are also not saying anything really insightful. Infact apart from the one by Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath review, which Satyam has posted, all the other reviews are sounding alike). And whether one agrees or disagrees with Rangan on the films you have mentioned, all his reviews he makes for an insightful reading. PK is actually quite formulaic though Rangan also makes the point that it is an important work (and that he quite liked it). With Haider he also called it a brilliant/very good film (though I admit his footnote-heavy characterisation seemed quite lazy especially for a film which is anything but lazy). I think 99.9% of I’s biggest supporters would agree that it was exhausting to say the least. Actually even Shamitabh goes on for too long.

Baby I found immensely overrated (though there is nothing wrong with the politics of the film, there is nothing communal/anti-secular about it. Infact if anything it is far more safer film on this score than the others in the genre. Saibal Chatterjee and others were plain wrong in this regard). The opening action sequence is well done, but that’s about it (and it made Special 26 look like a classic). It did however serve one purpose- which was to remind me how good “D-Day” was (this film is criminally underrated and under-seen). Actually once you take the genre into account, I think Holiday was a better film than Baby. I am actually quite looking forward to Akshay’s Ramanna remake- I believe Ramanna (inspite of starring Vijaykanth whom I found tough to stomach..though that’s the only film of the actor I have seen) is Murugadoss’ best work- lean, narrative-driven solid Masala film.

Ramana and Dheena are his best work. All his films after Ghajini, Kaththi and Thupakki, their respective remakes included, are not upto his earlier films which lacked all multiplex cliches.

Didn’t like Dheena (I have only seen a handful of Ajith’s films and the ones I have liked are Vaali, Mankatha, Mugavaree, Citizen, Billa and Amarakalam. Even enjoyed the very offensive Varalaru primarily because of Ajith. Haven’t seen Kadhal Kottai, Aasai etc. Also really want to watch both Yennai Arindhaal and the earlier Aarambam). I like Ramanna and the Hindi Ghajini a lot (though I enjoyed the Tamil version as well, just not as much Hindi one). I also quite enjoyed Thupakki (the only Vijay film I have ever enjoyed) and Holiday as well. And while didn’t care for the rest of the film, the historical portions of 7Aum Arivu were fabulous.

I’ve never been an Ajith fan but liked some of the older stuff, have a great weakness for Mugavari. And Citizen though not a great film overall is fantastic in terms of the flashback ‘trauma’. One of the most effective such sequences I’ve ever seen in an Indian film.

Even Shankar can’t save Bachchan now as he is a big zero at boxffice. If you multiply anything with zero that automatically becomes zero. My source told me that Bachchan is trying to get Hrithik on the board so that he can do a film with him. But the problem is Hrithik has no time as he is busy with future classic Mohonjodaro.

The best portions of Shamitabh are in the initial 30 minutes, where Dhanush’s obsession with acting and cinema makes him watch Parinda and other hindi films and mimic Brando and Ledger before running to Mumbai to meet the big names in the hindi film industry.
The choice of movie posters in his villa was more interesting than the actual film.
Dhanush’s performance was exemplary, though the director doesn’t know what to do with him in the second half.
Amitabh gets hammier as the film progresses. He ceases to interest, and the director needs to be blamed for making a Bachchan performance boring and laden with a caricature of his own self.
Akshara is cute but has a weird sense of dialogue delivery.
The film stretches beyond patience and in an effort to make it unpredictable, Balki goes haywire in a film that meanders aimlessly.
A classic case of a great idea gone wrong in amateurish hands.
Actors like Amitabh and Dhanush need great directors, not people who think out-of-the-box and that is the end of road for them.
Im sure this film wouldve sounded better on paper than the result. Thats what Balki is. Theoretically his ideas and narration might make it look like the best thing on planet, but things don’t translate particularly well on screen.

I remember reading about this scene between Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. They had a scene together where Pacino had to pant as if he had come running and deliver his lines to De Niro. So, Pacino went a long distance, ran and came running but when he reached his spot, he forgot his lines. Again he went back and ran a kilometre and he messed up his line. So then he was about to go behind and De Niro caught his hand, and said “Listen now can you try acting?” My approach is the same. Act like you have run and come. You don’t have to actually run. So don’t get into the part to the point it spills into your life. It’s called acting. So just act!
So you are saying no role has ever affected you that much?
I have played many disturbing characters whether it’s Sangharsh or Janwaar… and nothing affected me more than a day. If you see Marlon Brando, all these big actors, the so-called kings of acting, you will never hear them talking like this. It’s okay I can understand if you say that I am still feeling that character for a day… but after that, chal na, abhi khatam ho gaya.

That it is a ‘ solid entertainer with a semblance of reality’? And on I that ‘ it was exhausting and that Shankar was insensitive to transgenders? And on Haider that the Kasmir details weakened the story, while it was just the opposite? Frankly, I got a lot more insights from Qalandar’s write up on Haider and Satyam’s write up on ‘I’, Namrata Joshi’s review of Baby and Chndrahs Choudhury’s write up on Pk in BloombergView.

‘Shamitabh’ review: Performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush save the film
Despite the premise the biggest drawback of the film is its pace. The tussle between the leads is too dragged out and one does not really know whether their one-upmanship has any end. It feels as if the script writers tried to overplay the bit for some unknown reason. Also the passionate actor that was seen in Daanish as a child failed to show in the blockbusters that he starred in, which was a disappointment. There are quite a few places where the film slows down and you wish that the editing table was a little more brutal in cutting out unnecessary bits. The film would have probably struck a chord with the audience if only it were at least 45 minutes shorter but Balki as usual takes too long to bring the film to a climax and there it loses its charm.
This movie needs to be watched for the fabulous performances of Amitabh and Dhanush, and for the unique story. One wonders what could have been if there was crispier editing.

Shamitabh grossed 3.50 crore nett apprx on day one which is a poor figure and the film will be depending on big growth over the weekend and then a strong hold on Monday.
The collections in most circuits were low but the film was helped slightly by Mysore and Tamil Nadu / Kerala which contributed around 20% of its all India business when normally the contribution is around 6-7%. the mass circuits were poor with places like Rajasthan and CI having similar numbers to last weeks Khamoshiyan.
Mumbai grossed around 1.25 crore nett while Delhi/UP was around 60 lakhs nett. East Punjab was 30 lakhs nett and Mysore was better than East Punjab which hardly ever happens with collections of 35 lakhs nett plus.

this is really cool. It’s not really “prestigious” by any means though. It usually has a lot of B and C grade stars and former sports athletes. The game is in New York/Brooklyn this year. Kevin Hart is the only “big name”. He has been in this game for the past couple years. A lot of players take it seriously…so he better know how to hoop! lol. I know Abhishek is a huge Lakers fan and a Magic Johnson fan…so I’ll root for him!

Just came back from Shamitabh .. Surprisingly for me this is Balki’s best work. It has unique story, staller performances, good background music, quirky dialogues, good screenplay .. movie has more depth and better script than earlier two movies. Yes there are flaws, it could have been much better .. Ego clash stretched after a point. But still i enjoyed movie .. having said we were gang of 6 people .. and except me rest had mixed views. But i came back home very satisfied.

Salman Khan blasts Karan Johar for AIB?

Karan Johar’s troubles over his participation in the controversial AIB’s Roast are far from over.
The latest setback is, Salman Khan has taken huge offence to the titillating tamasha and has ticked off Karan Johar in no uncertain terms.
A close buddy of Salman spilled the beans when he revealed, “Salman doesn’t entertain or tolerate any kind of chichoraapan (vulgar behaviour) in public. He does a lot of mazaa-masti with friends in private. But in public his conduct is impeccable.”
Apparently Salman Khan was livid when his dear sister Arpita was named at the Roast. Though the offensive portions were removed from the show when it was edited for Youtube, Salman is still very upset over the whole issue.
Says a source, “Salman called up and gave Karan a piece of his mind. Salman told Karan in no uncertain terms that he found all the on-stage humour distasteful and unacceptable. He also threatened to walk of Karan’s film Shuddhi.”
Whether Salman Khan will finally simmer down and be pacified by Karan remains to be seen. But at the moment the superstar is in no mood to relent.

Are you playing Sanjay Dutt in Raju Hirani’s biopic of him?
Mr. Hirani has spoken to me about making Sanjay Dutt’s biopic and that is very exciting to me. Sanjay Dutt has been family to me and I have been a fan of his. He is the only one whose poster I had in my cupboard. My sister had Salman Khan’s poster and I had Sanjay Dutt’s. And while playing Sanjay Dutt will be exciting for me, Mr. Hirani has not confirmed that to me yet. Raju Hirani is not a director who you can keep calling and asking, if that film is happening or not.
Will Raju Hirani be directing it?
Yes. Biopics are tricky. When you announce it, it sounds fine, but to make a film on a celebrity with a large body of work is very hard. You can’t do birth to death. There have to be certain chapters of his life that are engaging, that have to be flagpole moments of a person’s life that need to be captured. It’s tricky because it also has to be seamless. Anurag Basu also wants to make Kishore Kumar’s biopic and we actually wanted to make it before Barfi, but then Barfi happened. And now Jagga Jasoos has happened. Biopics are very hard to write. These big directors understand that. A biopic has to celebrate their lives as best as possible. It has to entertain, at the same time, it does not have to be a propaganda film. It has to be honest and you have to portray them as grey, as who they really are. We all are grey. It’s not supposed to glorify somebody, it’s supposed to glorify someone’s human side.

It’s not very often that Hollywood unleashes two major theatrical bombs over the same weekend. But that’s what happened when “Jupiter Ascending” and “Seventh Son” both crashed and burned in U.S. theaters on Friday.
Warner Bros.’ “Jupiter Ascending,” starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, is quickly dropping in estimates to a thin $18 million weekend at the box office. With a budget north of $175 million, the Wachowskis sci-fi fantasy tentpole could lose tens of millions barring a dramatic turnaround overseas.
The forecast for Universal and Legendary’s long-delayed “Seventh Son,” starring Jeff Bridges, is just as gloomy. The medieval fantasy tentpole has already projected a loss of $85 million, as Variety exclusively reported this week, despite earning $82 million at the international box office. It’s on track for only $6.6 million in its U.S. debut.
Neither of the b.o. calamities are entirely surprising–both big-budget movies were long-delayed due to poor tracking and Paramount’s “The Spongebob Movie,” which is soaking up $53 million this weekend, was originally projected to win the weekend. Still, the lousy performances are a black eye for investors and filmmakers.

Saw Shamitabh… very good watch. I’m surprised by negative reviews and response as this is well made movie and actually slightly better than both Chini Kum and Paa. The concept is great but as every Balki’s movie, the screenplay is about average but engaging nevertheless. Both Dhanush and Amitabh’s performances make the movie worthy to watch. Can’t imagine SRK in Dhanush’s role(original choice) at all, Dhanush owed the role completely. Amitabh is excellent and simply great towards the end scenes. Overall, the movie will do well and even if not will do well on satellite and TV audience. Worthy to join Amitabh’s list of good movies.

so far the opening and trending are more or less in line with what one can expect from Balki. Unless of course Sun is poorer than expected. Which I doubt. What’s different though is that the reviews have not at all been the way they were for his earlier two films. But it could be that this is a film which doesn’t appeal to those who liked CK and Paa (I’d count myself within this group, haven’t had a chance to see Shamitabh yet but somehow I’ve not quite got the Balki vibe here barring the first song trailer) and on the other hand those who didn’t like these films very much warm up more to the current film (I’ve anecdotally had some confirmation of this including on this blog). In any case one way or the other what’s clear is that Balki is never going to be the sort of director who delivers a major grosser or something. Which is fine of course except that he quite often gets a rough shake then by the trade. And this again gets me to my old point. Somehow Jai Ho can be considered half-decent at 100 crores or whatever based on pricing issues while Shamitabh has to do 70% of that (or something) to be considered the same. Doesn’t make any sense. That on a smaller film like this and with a subject like distributors more or less spend as much as they do on Jai Ho! I could multiply the examples but for many years now I’ve seen these things. In any case Shamitabh still has a long way to go. It will need to remain rather stable at its lower end.

This is likely to continue till producers reveal the cost of All India distributors right for their films. As 90% of Hindi films and 75% of big budget star studded films are made from black money, this is unlikely to happen.

I went with my wife and parents-in-law, and barely 15 hours after I got off a long flight: my father-in-law was able to forgive the film everything because of Amitabh, but none of the rest of us were so generous. In fact I would say our Bachchan love made us more pissed, because more should have been done with this material! In particular, the way “Piddly” was used in the film was just… tonally “off” (I can’t say more without giving it away). Even Dhanush was way, WAY better used in Raanjhanaa than here.

‘I’ – 200 crores worldwide gross and ‘Adhukkum Mela’

Shankar – Vikram’s ‘I’ crossed the 25 days mark yesterday. The film released on 14th Jan in Tamil and Telugu and soon had its Hindi version released as well. The worldwide screen count was massive and the film was subsequently seen by audiences once, twice and ‘adhukkum mela’ for Vikram’s monstrous hard work and the make-up magic.
The film kept pulling in audiences, and the Tamil version particularly collected very big at the box-office. Even after Yennai Arindhaal, ‘I’ continues to hold on to a decent chunk of shows.
Interestingly, the worldwide gross of ‘I’ from all its three versions is more than 200 crores, which is a whopping figure by any margin. Shankar – Rajini’s Enthiran is the only other South Indian film to cross the 200 crores worldwide gross mark. Remarkable indeed …

Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal opened on Feb 5 Thursday and went on to register a blockbuster opening on Day 1 with houseful shows all over. The initial reviews were mostly positive and Ajith was accepted in a starkly different avatar by both his fans and the general audience at large. The film had a very strong Gautham Menon stamp with generous traces of his earlier hits.
At the box office in TN, the film is believed to have grossed around 20 crores after its first 2 days, with the first day gross being 11 crores. The opening has been good in Karnataka and the overseas markets too.

At the end of the 4 days’ opening weekend, Yennai Arindhaal is reported to have grossed around 30 to 31 crores in Tamil Nadu. This is a very healthy figure and compares well with the other recent Tamil biggies. The film hasn’t been given the entertainment tax exemption and consequently the net would be lesser than the gross.
In Chennai city, as reported earlier, the film grossed around 2.93 crores after the first 4 days. We have to see how the film holds on, in the days to come. Stay tuned.

Thala Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal is holding well at the box office and now the makers have decided to trim six minutes of the film. Sources say that as majority of the audience feel that in the first half is slow paced , they have chopped Anushka’s introduction song portions in the film.
Mean time, the film is doing humongous business at the USA box office. The film has grossed nearly 415k US $ till Saturday which means it has crossed the lifetime business of Arrambam which is around 380k$.
Previously Arrambam was Ajith’s best film at the US box office, now Yennai Arindhaal broke it in just 3 days (Premiere + 2 days ). Directed by Gautham Menon, Yennai Arindhaal also has Trisha, Anushka, Arun Vijay and Vivek to its star cast.

Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan will have three releases in 2015 which includes Uttama Villain, Papanasam and Vishwaroopam-2.
The latest buzz in K-town is that Gemini Film circuit has bought the remake rights of Rajkumar Hiran’s Aamir Khan starrer PK which grossed 600 crores at the box office.
Reports suggest that GFC has approached Kamal Haasan to reprise the role done by Aamir Khan and the actor has given his nod for the Tamil-Telugu bilingual. Earlier, Gemini Film Circuit remade Rajkumar Hirani’s Munnabhai MBBS and 3 Idiots as Vasool Raja MBBS and Nanban respectively.
Mean time, GFC is also facing a tough financial crisis in releasing Vishal’s Madha Gaja Raja and now the big question is, will it be possible for the production house to fund the remake of PK involving massive budget?

AP International is providing the Tamil DVD of the film (in case one doesn’t follow the language, the subtitles should be very easily available on the net separately). I am not sure if the Hindi DVD is out though.

Watched Shamitabh second time and loved it even more .. Never knew this is going to happen. This movie not even giving time to think about its flaws if any .. i mean you got to so much involved in magical performances .. that you want more and more, even if it dragged. Some of its scene are delivered in such a stunning way that no award can justify its outstanding status and never seen before impact. This is definitely best bachchan performance post 1990 Agneepath. I definitely going to keep every format of movie at home. I am simply proud. What a start of 2015 …. I hope at BO, Shamitabh will find some appreciation, if not .. even then it will be always remember as one of best bachchan movies.

We have learnt from confirmed sources that Kunal Kapoor and Naina Bachchan married each other last night in a very private way in the presence of their family at the idyliic island of Seychelles.
We learnt that they had a beach ceremony. They had also got engaged earlier in a very private way and thus this comes as no surprise. We learnt that they were introduced to each other by Naina’s first cousin, the lovely Shweta Bachchan Nanda and we believe that they are likely to host a reception in Delhi when they return. Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack: Ellie Goulding song ‘Love Me Like You Do’ named fastest-selling single of the year.
The track, which features on the soundtrack for the screen adaptation of EL James’ best-selling trilogy, went to Number One yesterday, knocking Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” from the top spot after seven weeks.

Just as the film entered its 25th day, Shankar’s much hyped visual wonder ‘I’ has created an astonishing record. The film’s Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions amassed a whopping 200 crore gross and are inching towards beating Robo’s record. Prior to ‘I’, Shankar-Rajini’s ‘Robo’ was the only south Indian film that reached the 200 crore mark.
Released amidst heavy expectations, the Telugu and Hindi versions of I’ failed to set the box office ablaze. However, the film’s Tamil version minted gold thanks to the festive season and a huge craze for Shankar-Vikram combination. Baby Hits 90 Crores: 3rd Monday Box Office Collections
Considering it is the film’s 3rd Week at the Box Office, Akshay Kumar’s Baby maintained a good pace even in the week days. The movie, as per early estimates, made a business of around 0.80 crores on its 3rd Monday, taking its total collections to 90.40 crores nett at the Box Office in India.
The movie is currently the Highest Grosser of 2015. However, biggies like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Main Gabbar, Brothers, Fan et al, which are lined up in the forthcoming months, will soon beat Baby‘s collections.

Varun Dhawan to work in sequel to Akshay Kumar’s Baby?
Director Neeraj Pandey’s latest release, Baby, has received several encouraging reviews. So, it comes as no surprise that the makers of the Akshay Kumar-starrer — Bhushan Kumar and Neeraj — are looking forward to teaming up again for a sequel. However, the news doing the rounds now is that Varun Dhawan might join the cast for the second part.
It’s believed that the young actor has already been approached and things are “most likely to work out”. “Although Varun’s date diary is packed right now, the makers are keen on having him on board,” says a source.
Akshay, who has given his nod for the film, might also be indirectly responsible for Varun’s inclusion. “Varun has known Akshay since he was a kid, as the senior actor has done many films with David Dhawan (Varun’s father and director),” says the source.
The Baby sequel is expected to hit theatres around Republic Day in 2017. Neeraj will start working on it as soon as he finishes work on MS Dhoni biopic, which stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role.

The Chennai box-office boomed last week as the ‘King of Opening’ Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal released on Thursday, February 5. The film has taken a very good opening and garnered a four-day gross of approximately Rs 3 Crore from Chennai city.
Yennai Arindhaal is the clear No.1 at CBO this week helped by a large number of screens and Ajith’s screen presence. The film has got decent reviews but some of the fans feel it is a mixture of the director’s earlier cop films.
At No.2 is Shankar’s I, steady and strong at the box-office in its fourth week. But I suffered as it was shifted from bigger screens to the smaller screens to accommodate the Ajith starrer.
In the 3rd place is Dhanush’s second Hindi release, Shamitabh, which took a decent opening due to its southern names in its cast and technician list.
At No.4 is GV Prakash’s Darling, which can now be termed a super hit as it has already covered its cost from theatricals alone.
And in the 5th place is SJ Surya’s Isai, which carries ok reports but due to its length is not being preferred by multiplex managers. It is also playing at the smallest of screens.

Again people are picking up the convenient part to sensationalise and scandalise Aamir’s comment as if he asked for the ban, but he just aired his opinion with regard to AIB Roast and also spoke against witch hunting and any ban and freedom of speech to those who participated in the roast. He was candid and unequivocal in his opinion and it must be noted that he said it many times that he was speaking for himself as there were youngsters who liked the show but he didn’t, his fault was that he was not diplomatic as he stated what he felt and that’s his biggest folly and drawback which makes him an easy and soft target. Listen from 1:01:05 onward where he makes his stand on the controversy very clear.

Not an Aamir fan but he’s so right here. Roasts are fine, but the AIB was offensive. And if the “youth” thinks that jokes insulting gays and making fun of dark people are funny then shame on the youth, they need the older generation to instill some sense of right into them. Nothing wrong with having a roast, making fun of stars, swearing etc but there is a problem with making fun of dark people and gays. And the Farida Jalal joke was disgusting.
And there is no comparison between Delhi Belly and AIB. None of Delhi Belly’s jokes really targeted a group of people. Plus Aamir was defending freedom of speech from the beginning of his comment.

It is an individual opinion. Many people would be offended by Delhi Belly and some would be even offended by Alok Nath’s Sanskari jokes. We are different people. So should we stop ? Our tolerances levels are different. Moreover if you celebrity you get attention and brickbats. As celebrity people should develop a thick skin. Modi is called murderer, Hitler, Feku; Kejriwal is called Naxal. Bhagoda… Now they can not shut everyone’s mouth?
Why Aamir was scolding Karan for Roast? If Aamir has right to make Delhi Belly then why Karan, Ranvir, Arjun have same right to participate in roast. You think you can make Delhi Belly in Freedom of speech but someone who makes something objectionable in different dimension in not allowed ?
He is also implying that they didn’t inform people like he did for Delhi Belly. He is wrong in implication. People who paid Rs. 4000 knew what they were getting into. On YouTube there is warning before show.
Even I am far removed from Gali galoj but I wouldn’t do it myself but no issues with AIB.

Fat people are routinley made fun of and so are old people.
I was thinking that if aamir is targetted definitely his height and his ears would have been made fun of. SRK’s films like HNY and his awards would have been made fun of. Bachchan’s humility and his political friendhips would have been targetted. Salman’s tryst with court cases against him and his acting abilities. But Karan Johar will be careful. He will pickup small celebrities. He has no guts to take on big ones. He will stop at some point. So I dont see any future in such roasts. Indians are sensitive and take offence easily.

First on the roast, it was a poor copy of the Comedy Central roasts that they have in U.S every year. All kinds of abusive language is used there they are a million times much funnier then the poor show they put in AIB!
Second, Not sure all these guys who are speaking against Aamir in regards to Delhi Belly even understand real life from reel life. So instead of defending your act, you will go after Aamir for a freakin movie which, and it’s worth repeating, was a effin movie! You can go after Aamir for freedom of speech (which he clearly defended in the above video) but why is everyone jumping on him for Delhi Belly?? That was movie where, from what I recall, no segment of society was attacked in any way. When you do a roast like this in US, no one cares. When you do it in a country like India, expect some backlash. Not everyone is a fan of these type of jokes. Aamir has every right to speak again them but at no point did I see him talking about banning them.

And to top that look at the hypocrisy by Deepika and Sonakshi as they were the ones who were offended by TOI pics and KRK tweets respectively, but here they are seen enjoying worst kind of outrageous remarks and expletives being exchanged in the name of JOKES? Even i didn’t like Aamir’s lame defense for his title song in Delhi Belly, but it wasn’t thrown at any one specifically, but at the AIB what they were doing was really stupid, nuisance, bereft of inducing any laughter whatsoever. Had they put in a little situations to insert their muck and filth in it, it would have been much easier to digest the act but what they were doing was just hurling abuses, expletives, cussing and making idiotic lewd comments on women, LGBT and full of racism.
I really find the concept of these abuses very sexist as they always are pointed towards women and are made to showcase the MASCULINITY of men!! Why are there no expletive or cuss words derogating men’s weaknesses and frailties because this was, is and will remain male dominated world and so will these kinds of male chauvinistic tendencies. Until the real egalitarian society emeges, i do not see end to this colossal anomaly tilted in favour of male.

I agree; there are male centric abuses but are not common.
The first year in any professional college will make you immune to any kind of abuse. Anyone who has done professional degree (Engineering, medical..) will say the abuses in roast are pedestrian!

Roy Pins Hopes On Ranbir Kapoor And Music

Roy will release this week and has hit music and Ranbir Kapoor as advantages. The problem is that these advantages have not been exploited fully. The music has done well but visually it is not looking good which todayis of huge importance as the songs have to look good on screen to help a film in a big way.
The promos of the film do make it look like a Ranbir Kapoor cleverly giving less importance to actual male lead Arjun Rampal. Ranbir has not had a release for nearly 18 months and some of his fans may give it a go though with the access to media today many will know its not full out Ranbir Kapoor film.
Promotion by Ranbir Kapoor could have helped to get a few more footfalls. The film may just get one of the better starts of the year if Ranbir Kapoor factor works but that is not much considering what has happened over the last month or so. The other release MSG may have some takers around the Delhi and Haryana area.

Think having a May release is a rather smart move by Rathnam in a commercial sense (and it was also a wise decision by him to take Dulquer for a bilingual film considering Dulquer’s “Vaayi Moodi Pesavum” was a hit in Tamil Nadu. It also helps that after Ustad Hotel, Dulquer-Nithya is a rather hot pair) since apparently the lead pair here has another Malayalam rom-com “100 Days of Love” (poster for those interested- http://www.twitter.com/dulquersalmaan1/status/565606892970713088/photo/1 )releasing a couple of months before the Rathnam film. That being said I wish Rathnam would have picked Nivin Pauly over Dulquer if he wanted to go for a young Malayali actor. The guy is a far better actor and has a much greater range (not that I mind Dulquer).

Why AIB has a right to roast (and why Aamir Khan is not right at all)

‘For Aamir Khan, the producer of Delhi Belly, to shame these boys — and the celebrities involved — for swearwords and insults, is the most hypocritical thing in the world.’
Raja Sen calls out Aamir Khan on his criticism of the controversial AIB Roast.
Truth alone triumphs.
That’s what Satyameva Jayate — a motto India’s founding fathers chose for her from the Upanishads, and one that has since been co-opted by Aamir Khan as a name for his philanthropic, awareness-building television show — means. This is why this piece should be one of fact over opinion.
And because that is a motto that bears repeating.
The fact is that All India Bakchod (AIB), a collective of four stand-up comedians with more foresight than their peers, got together and had a Bollywood Roast with several film folk participating and in attendance.
This is not, by any standard, a new or particularly original idea; the format of peers trading insults goes back a long, long way, and the first Roast to call itself that was held by The Friar’s Club in 1910.
Dean Martin made the format popular with an NBC series through the 1970s where he’d boozily wink and slay a group of celebrity friends. In the more recent past, the television channel Comedy Central made the format their own with a set of increasingly profane (and, as a result, increasingly harmless) shows.
The recent Comedy Central shows are what the AIB show is closest to in terms of tone and content and texture, and bully to them — as I said in a previous column celebrating the Roast — for pulling it off in the middle of a stuffy Hindi film industry too fearful of its self-image to actually have a good laugh.
“Pulling it off,” alas, turned out to be an unfortunately ominous bit of phrasing, considering that the comedians have since yanked the roast off YouTube, bowing to pressure from various easily-offended/politically-motivated extremist groups.
They have apologised repeatedly and tried to explain their lack of malicious intent, but the video stays removed while every talking head in the country has an opinion — mostly to do with what they thought of the roast, as opposed to how important it is to be able to do something like this, to keep the possibility of it alive.
The reaction to AIB’s removal of the roast and their heartfelt apologies, one of which specifically and puzzlingly singled out the entire Christian community, has been two-pronged, with most of their most-vocal supporters seemingly stung by this compliance.
‘How dare they?’ asks this incensed, self-righteous line of thinking. ‘We made them the posterboys for free-speech and look, they didn’t stand by their work.’
That is an argument so dunderheaded it hardly deserves an answer, but it is becoming increasingly clear we live in a country where we need to patiently explain our points as if reasoning with a dull six-year-old.
Just because they have “All India” in their name does not make AIB a political party. They were not voted into power and they have not made any pre-election promises; they have never asked for themselves to be made into these icons of free speech.
They’re just four funny boys who got together and tried to see how far Bollywood can take a joke; four boys who have formerly found themselves thwarted by Bollywood in the past, when they tried to write gags for the Filmfare Awards and were told each joke on a star must be approved by said star, and when they went to Yash Raj Films to make a spoof onDhoom 3 and were told to go home, leading to AIB’s first huge viral success.
So these four yuksters, these eye-rolling oft-retweeted one-liner superstars, managed to get Bollywood to laugh out loud and say some very rude things.
You may or may not like the roast, but by golly, these nuts managed to get away with a lot.
Or so it seemed.
Now, under political threat, threat from muscular Bollywood stars, possible physical threats of violence to the boys and their families, they backed down and took the video down.
Fair enough.
It’s their call, and before you start wishing for a martyr, take a minute to picture just how patently depressing the inside of a Mumbai police station is. These boys are shuttling between cops and lawyers and reading clauses and justifying themselves when all they’d rather do is tweet snarky things about how tremendously the BJP bungled up the Delhi election.
Our journalists, of course, are having a field day asking everyone they can see about the Roast and ‘freedom of expression’; yesterday afternoon at a press conference, they asked Sant Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan — the leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda and the actor-director of the upcoming MSG — what he thought of AIB and he, quite convincingly said he hadn’t seen any such video, but just hoped they didn’t show naked women or shameful activities.
In this, the Insan’s clearly personal opinion made more sense than that of Aamir Khan, who appeared out of the woodwork to condemn AIB, saying he didn’t find swearwords funny and that he found insult comedy ‘violent’ and that celebrities have a certain responsibility.
If this were just another fuddy-duddy actor, we’d have laughed it off.
He can’t stand swearing, we couldn’t stand Fanaa; he finds insult-comedy ‘violent’, we find his Christopher Nolan plagiarism ‘violent’, and so on.
But for Aamir Khan, the producer of Delhi Belly, to shame these boys — and the celebrities involved — for swearwords and insults, is the most hypocritical thing in the world.
It’s Kanye-level self-delusion.
Khan knew Delhi Belly would be brought up, and said, ‘I applied for an A certificate. I went out of my way during promotions to tell everyone that ours is an adult film, and don’t come watch it.’
But, Mr Khan, you didn’t do that with the songs, your very catchy Bhaag Bhaag DK Bose song — masking a profane term by breaking it down and switching it up, literally like making a song called Hole-***, Hole-***, Hole-*** — took a foul gaali and handed it to schoolkids via music videos and radio.
It became a massive sensation, you marketing genius you, and parents around the country ashamedly pretended they didn’t hear it.
Where was that responsibility then?
For someone like you to not shun the offended and instead take offence at the content, well, Mr Khan, is wholly asinine.
As for the fellows at AIB, I hope they’re silent because they’re keeping their heads down and using these trying times to generate new material.
I only hope they make it out mostly unscathed — and funnier than ever.
