H 10 Has Poor Start

NH 10 had a poor opening of 10-15% and is dependent on the evening shows to give it some sort of decent platform to make improvement from on Saturday. The opening was a bit better at some theatres in South Delhi but overall NCR which is probably its best target market was poor with Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad all very low..
The film has a low budget of just 12 crore but a 9 crore spend on P & A and it is this which may prove costly for the film. A huge chunk of this 9 crore goes to create that awareness for a better initial but the film would not have opened much lower even if the spend was just half of that 9 crore.
The film will need a huge jump on Saturday and a strong hold on Monday to have any chance of a decent run at the box office.
Dum Laga Ke Haisha Has Very Good Second Week

Dum Laga Ke Haisha grossed a very good 9.75-10 crore nett in its second week taking its two week total to 20.50 crore nett. The second weekend was better than the first but the second week came in a little lower than the first week with a 7-8% drop.
There will be a drop in the third week as another multiplex film NH10 gives it competition but it will still hang around in the theatres for the next few weeks and finish at around the 30 crore nett mark.
The best business is in the North with Delhi/UP being the best circuit followed by East Punjab. West Bengal is the surprise as these types tend to struggle in the circuit and Dum Laga Ke Haisha may cross 1.75 crore nett which is a big number for that circuit.

Badlapur has grossed 49 crore nett in three weeks with the third week adding 3.75 crore nett. The business for the first three weeks is as follows.
Week One – 35,96,00,000
Week Two – 9,32,00,000
Week Three – 3,75,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 49,03,00,000
The film will cross 50 crore nett but will remain the lowest grossing film of Varun Dhawan as it will fall short of the 53 crore nett business of Main Tera Hero.
As one creepily cynical character points out without batting an eyelid, democracy and the Indian Constitution have no currency beyond where “the last mall of Gurgaon ends”.
In an attempt at chilling humour, the selfsame man says: “Electricity hasn’t arrived here, forget the Constitution.”
Director Rahul Dholakia is all set to step back into Bollywood after five years with his new film “Raees”, which will release on Eid next year. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan with Pakistani actress Mahira Khan.
Mahira is known for playing the role of Khirad in popular Pakistani show “Humsafar”, and she is making her Bollywood debut with “Raees”, which also stars the versatile Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
In the movie, SRK would be seen playing the role of a bootlegger and Mahira would be playing his love interest. Nawazuddin will embody a policeman chasing King Khan’s character.
“Raees” is an action thriller drama, co-produced by Excel Entertainment and Red Chillies Entertainment.
Rare photographs of Osama bin Laden’s life in Afghanistan before the 9/11 attacks have emerged during a terrorism trial in Manhattan.
The photos offer a glimpse into the cavernous tunnels and camps he was building in the mountainous area of Afghanistan known as Tora Bora.
They were taken by Palestinian journalist Abdel Barri Atwan, who was invited to the hideout in 1996 as part of Bin Laden’s ploy to spread his message of hate to the world.
All the images were released by the United States Attorney’s Office during the trial of Khaled al-Fawwaz, a communications conduit for terrorists in the mid-1990s.
NH 10 has managed to pick up in the evening a bit as is always possible with the adult films which tend to perform better in the shows after 6 pm. The early morning collections suggest a 2-2.25 crore nett opening day but the first day will come in at around 3 crore nett due to a better show in the evening.
The film is being lead by collections in North India (Delhi and East Punjab, UP is weak) and other metro cities. Maharshtra and Gujarat are weak while Rajasthan has a respectable number from the mass circuits.
The evening has given the film a film a chance and not it has to build on Saturday with growth in the 50% or more range.
A movie, which by their own admission on which not more than 12 crores was spent, is still being run down in their commentary despite having a fairly fine initial. 2.5 crores is what Kahaani made on its opening day. I suppose that unless it’s a big budget Khan movie, they just won’t have anything good to say about anything. If they had their way, they won’t even let independent cinema exist in the country.

If you catch NH10, try to write a brief review. I think it is really a very good movie going through many reviews and spoilers.
I think they mentioned 12crr budget and additional 9crr on promotions and advertisements. If the movie does around 13-14crr weekend then it will be fine. Lets see.
Bollywood actor Sonakshi Sinha was on Saturday declared the worst actor (Female) at the 7th Golden Kela Awards for her performances in Action Jackson, Lingaa and Holiday.
Golden Kela Awards is an Indian version of Golden Raspberry Awards and honours the worst in Bollywood in a lighter vein.
The 27-year-old actor beat Katrina Kaif, Sonam Kapoor, Tamannah Bhatia and Jacqueline Fernandes to bag the award. Sonakshi won the title last year for R…Rajkumar and in 2013 for everything she did.
Arjun Kapoor was bestowed with the worst actor (Male) award for Gunday and everything else. Saif Ali Khan-starrer comedy Humshakals was named the worst film, while the worst director title went to Prabhu Deva for Action Jackson.
Tiger Shroff was accredited with the worst debut award for his performance in Heropanti.
Musician Yo Yo Honey Singh was chosen for the ‘bas kijiye bahut ho gaya’ award while his composition Blue Hai Paani Paani from Yaariyan got the most irritating song award.
Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang! was chosen for the RGV Ki Aag award for the most pointless remake/sequel.
The Ice Cream song from Xpose got Shabbir Ahmed the most atrocious lyrics award.
The ‘baawra ho gaya hai ke’ award went to director Abhishek Sharma for The Shaukeens.
“I am extremely excited to win the Baawra Award, as Golden Kela Awards are the only awards worth winning in this industry that celebrates mediocrity like no other film industry in the world. Proud to be one of the baawras of Bollywood!” Abhishek said.
Sonam won the ‘why are you still trying’ award. In the special awards category, PK won the Fanaa award for most pointlessly controversial film.
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan bagged the ‘jadoo’ award for most convincing looking alien in Happy New Year.
Actor Priyanka Chopra won the Dara Singh award for the worst accent in Mary Kom. Shakti Kapoor award for misogyny in a film went to Action Jackson.
Horror film 6-5 = 2, remake of a Kannada movie of the same name, was chosen for the ‘khooni Dracula’ award for most creatively named horror film.
Jatin Varma, Founder, Golden Kela Awards, said, “We obviously do not wish to hurt any sentiments with these awards! We only hope that those who receive the awards take it in jest and look forward to creating a better experience for their fans!”
Happy Birthday to Aamir Khan!!…50th bday is always a huge occasion!! One of my favorite songs from one of his movies…IMO one of the best songs of the 90’s no doubt:
have been watching this man since my mid-teen years (before that only watched Amitabh movies)…his movies always made me laugh (AAA, HHRPK, Dil etc…) then growing up, now a man…his movies have been meaningful and with substance…feel like as he has matured with his worldview…so have I and that’s why his movies and his show I can relate to the most nowadays.
I would really recommend the new Shakespeare adaptation “Cymbeline” (it’s directed by the guy who also did hamlet with Ethan Hawke) to everyone, it’s the most fun I have had watching a Shakespearean adaptation in recent times and I really want to revisit the play which I hadn’t quite liked when I had read it first. Incidentally Ed Harris hasn’t been this good in ages and Hawke and Dakota fanning are also in fine form
That being said, I preferred Ralph Fieness’ “Coriolanus”, that film remains criminally under-seen. It was such a powerful, vigorous adaptation and the pace of the film never dropped. It is also the only time (perhaps apart from “300”) where I didn’t mind Gerard Butler

BTW have you seen Mysskin’s “Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum”? I think you will perhaps prefer this to Badlapur. I really liked his more recent Pisaasu as well.
Managed to catch NH10 yesterday. It’s like a revenge slasher film that runs on the samr thEme. Has a wafer thin storyline and the plot can be described in a line but it doesn’t aim to be anything more than that. It still raises some important issues of lawlessness in remote areas, corruption and regressive mindsets in areas where (disturbingly) women are the domineering, dictating personalities. The real achievement is te screenplay comprising tense moments and some really effective performances.
Anushka was a true revelation, bringing the right mix in every situation. From a prim, straitlaced business executive to a vulnerable prey to a cold, emotionless killer in the end, she brought believability to her part. Of the supporting cast, the prime antagonist left a mark as the menacing, ruthless killer.
Overall, a very gripping watch. Dont expect enlightenment from the latest film from the kashyap stable. But what u can expect is a getaway “masala” film made for kashyap fans.
So you liked it. I am steeling myself to watch it By watching films on Star Action like Hard Target and the stuff. Jean-Claude Van Damme and action seem like identical twins.
We don’t realize that these B and C grade movies have better screenplay and cohesiveness. I love those Steven Seagal, Van Damme movies .NH10 story is like a typical C grade movie but not done that well (it has a decent other side of the story but it is not used properly).
Srk continues to bore with his new quiz show, India Poochega Sabse Shaana Kaun. Was a torture to even stay with it for 10 minutes. Basu is losing his credibility along with him.
Navdeep Singh’s second outing, NH10, isn’t quite a disaster, but it’s a confused film, one that makes the mistake of having too much on its plate. On the surface, here, Singh wants to do with the Deliverance-type yuppies-trapped-in-the-redneck-backwoods thriller what he did with Chinatown in his excellent first feature, Manorama: 6 Feet Under. The yuppies are Gurgaon-based Meera (a very effective Anushka Sharma) and her husband Arjun (Neil Bhoopalam). (Something about these names must sound terribly urban to filmmakers. In Yuva too, the yuppie pair was Arjun/Meera.)
NH10’s director Navdeep Singh has been celebrating with his cast and crew.
“I never expected this kind of a response to the film,” he confesses. “It was drilled into me that this is a dark, gritty, real film and audiences don’t really want to watch a film that’s all of this. I was kind of mentally prepared for a tepid response. Wonders never cease.”
While the film has been uniformly applauded for its hard-nosed look at the reality that runs through the rapid urbanization of rural India, there have been some claims that NH10 has been inspired by a 2008 American horror film called Eden Lake.
Says Navdeep, “It’s not a particular film. It’s the genre. The girl-hounded-in-the-wilderness genre of cinema. Why just Eden Lake? There may be similarities to many other films of that genre. I can think of at least 20 films like mine. Some critics have mentioned a Jodie Foster film The Brave One. I call this the Wikipedia school of critical stalking. You can’t pin down my film to films that belong to the same genre. We had to abide by the demands of the genre but at the same time, we opened it up, brought in issues that took the genre beyond its ‘slasher’ intentions.”
The director explains how the genre was opened up.

Just to repeat, NH10 doesn’t pedantically underline any of these things. I can already imagine ideology-driven critiques that come down on it for making a woman “win” by resorting to vicious male violence, or perhaps for encouraging a multiplex viewer to sweepingly judge “those savage Haryana types”. But the specific situation shown here involves a game of survival where anything goes, and where moralizing or philosophizing is a luxury the characters can’t afford. At the very end, where another film might have engaged in some gyaan-dispensing about the sickness in our society, this one leaves us with a single desolate line, spoken first by one person and then echoed by another. “Jo karna tha, kar liya.” No quarter is given. This has been a clash of civilizations, but the victory won at the end is a shallow, Pyrrhic one. At a time when so many movies are about affirmation – providing views of the world as it should be rather than as it is – this one uses genre tropes (from horror, suspense, even the road movie) to mask the fact that it is one of the bleakest, most nihilistic depictions of our social framework.

The film, however, holds its path right down to the shocking final moments.
NH10 is an adventurous Bollywood film that breaks the shackles of convention and is none the worse for it. Eminently watchable.

the other worthwhile Shakespeare production was Julie Taylor’s Titus Andronicus. Visually well done. I don’t like the play otherwise.

It still raises some important issues of lawlessness in remote areas, corruption and regressive mindsets in areas where (disturbingly) women are the domineering, dictating personalities. The real achievement is te screenplay comprising tense moments and some really effective performances.
Anushka was a true revelation, bringing the right mix in every situation. From a prim, straitlaced business executive to a vulnerable prey to a cold, emotionless killer in the end, she brought believability to her part. Of the supporting cast, the prime antagonist left a mark as the menacing, ruthless killer.
Overall, a very gripping watch. Dont expect enlightenment from the latest film from the kashyap stable. But what u can expect is a getaway “masala” film made for kashyap fans.

We don’t realize that these B and C grade movies have better screenplay and cohesiveness. I love those Steven Seagal, Van Damme movies .NH10 story is like a typical C grade movie but not done that well (it has a decent other side of the story but it is not used properly).

Navdeep Singh’s second outing, NH10, isn’t quite a disaster, but it’s a confused film, one that makes the mistake of having too much on its plate. On the surface, here, Singh wants to do with the Deliverance-type yuppies-trapped-in-the-redneck-backwoods thriller what he did with Chinatown in his excellent first feature, Manorama: 6 Feet Under. The yuppies are Gurgaon-based Meera (a very effective Anushka Sharma) and her husband Arjun (Neil Bhoopalam). (Something about these names must sound terribly urban to filmmakers. In Yuva too, the yuppie pair was Arjun/Meera.)

NH10’s director Navdeep Singh has been celebrating with his cast and crew.
“I never expected this kind of a response to the film,” he confesses. “It was drilled into me that this is a dark, gritty, real film and audiences don’t really want to watch a film that’s all of this. I was kind of mentally prepared for a tepid response. Wonders never cease.”
While the film has been uniformly applauded for its hard-nosed look at the reality that runs through the rapid urbanization of rural India, there have been some claims that NH10 has been inspired by a 2008 American horror film called Eden Lake.
Says Navdeep, “It’s not a particular film. It’s the genre. The girl-hounded-in-the-wilderness genre of cinema. Why just Eden Lake? There may be similarities to many other films of that genre. I can think of at least 20 films like mine. Some critics have mentioned a Jodie Foster film The Brave One. I call this the Wikipedia school of critical stalking. You can’t pin down my film to films that belong to the same genre. We had to abide by the demands of the genre but at the same time, we opened it up, brought in issues that took the genre beyond its ‘slasher’ intentions.”

Just to repeat, NH10 doesn’t pedantically underline any of these things. I can already imagine ideology-driven critiques that come down on it for making a woman “win” by resorting to vicious male violence, or perhaps for encouraging a multiplex viewer to sweepingly judge “those savage Haryana types”. But the specific situation shown here involves a game of survival where anything goes, and where moralizing or philosophizing is a luxury the characters can’t afford. At the very end, where another film might have engaged in some gyaan-dispensing about the sickness in our society, this one leaves us with a single desolate line, spoken first by one person and then echoed by another. “Jo karna tha, kar liya.” No quarter is given. This has been a clash of civilizations, but the victory won at the end is a shallow, Pyrrhic one. At a time when so many movies are about affirmation – providing views of the world as it should be rather than as it is – this one uses genre tropes (from horror, suspense, even the road movie) to mask the fact that it is one of the bleakest, most nihilistic depictions of our social framework.
