  1. WTF is that background music in a movie set in Kolkata 1943? Also it’s too gritty for me- I saw the bengali Byomkesh Bakshi starring Abir Chatterjee and that was a family film. I haven’t read the series so not sure if the books are kid friendly?

  3. Death metal feels like a fan made joke cut in as it is here. There’s a way to edit counter-intuitive music well. This is not that way.

  5. Really depressing. I think the best Byomkesh Bakshi adaptation will then remain the Rait Kapoor/K.K.Raina tele serial.

  6. It doesn’t fit the era or the tenor of the original stories but it looks fantastic

  7. ha ha…..with the line “Bakshi…..Byomkesh Bakshi” – Bond must be feeling insecure now 🙂

  9. Ouch…..they just turned the entire legacy of the BB serial starring Rajat Kapoor and KK Raina upside down. Hope the trailer is better.

  11. I’m surprised no one’s picked up the key visual motif in the trailer — it’s a comic book/graphic novel adaptation, made explicit with the last shot of Bakshi overlooking a burning image of Calcutta. It’s as if Batman is looking at Gotham…

I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Just don’t expect high art going in, and you’d be fine.

The Bond reference is out of place though. This is a chance for Dibakar Banerjee to showcase his Hollywood/world cinema influences, as there’s not much to show otherwise. Apart from OLLO and to an extent KKG, I remain largely unimpressed with his work. Shanghai wasn’t a bad film per se, it was just so dour that Byomkesh Bakshi is a welcome change.

If the film ends up being a pastiche, as I suspect, I wouldn’t mind it one bit. I think talented filmmakers need this latitude to express themselves and have some fun. From this particular trailer, it’s clear that Dibakar Banerjee knows his cinema. The tributes to film-noir and (gritty) comic book adaptations are all too clear. Given the kind of entertainment that Bollywood regulars dish out, this is a connoisseur’s dream. Seriously!

A word about Sushant Singh Rajput: he seems to find himself landing plum roles with talented filmmakers, more often than not. What seems to be the mystery here?

  12. Banerjee needs to do well with this movie. His Shanghai failed. Lot of Indians mostly in the age group of 30-40 would remember BB as the television serial and not ala graphic novel.

  14. this is the best trailer so far.. obviously a very well-shot film. On the other hand I’m not persuaded by Sushant Singh’s Byomkesh so far.
