But i think AB, after so many years and doing every possible thing, should have been conferred with Bharat Ratna. I don’t know anyone bigger than him in the Indian Film industry in its 100 years, be it talent, achievement, success, impact, social connect, he is, by a huge margin, the “BEST” in the industry. If Sachin can be conferred with Bharat Ratna, AB certainly deserves Bharat Ratna.

It’s this procrastinating propensity which irks me most as the timing is as important as the awards. What’s the purpose when award becomes irrelevant because of the tardiness. This tendency diminishes the charm associated with the awards, politicising these national treasures is another irksome aspect which needs to be done away with.

the worst example of this was Satyajit Ray who got the Bharat Ratna after he got an honorary Oscar and this literally a few weeks or months before his death.

Bachchan richly deserves this award. And also Bharat Ratna for his contribution just like Sachin got for Cricket.
Would like to know who instituted these awards and who named these awards.
Would like to see Narayana Murthy getting Bharat Ratna for being a different kind of business man.

Master: one person who surely cared was Amitabh himself, who has always been so enthusiastic and gracious in his praise for Dilip Kumar (I must admit I don’t quite hold Dilip Kumar in great esteem: at the level of pure enjoyability, the Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor films from the 1950s have aged much better, and there is a pomposity, a self-satisfaction to much of Dilip Kumar’s work that puts me off)…

Qalandar: I’m aware of that but you make it sound as if Amitabh is doing a ‘favor’ by praising Dilip Kumar. It doesn’t matter what you think about Dilip Kumar(everyone has their own favorites) and you don’t seem enthustic about Amitabh praising the one which isn’t one of your own favorites. For me its simple, Dilip kumar was AB’s fav and idol before he joined movies and one which didn’t change even after that. I don’t see how is that puzzling to some?

On other hand, Salim Khan rejected the Padmashri award saying its too late in the day for him. I kinda agree, to give him the first step of award so late in the day after ending his career decades ago. (btw, Javed Akhtar got both Padmashri and Padma Bhushan long back). They should have directly given Padma Bhushan(2nd layer) and leave it at that, no need further awards beyond that.

my comment on Bachchan’s blog today:
[As you know I don’t have any great patriotic sensibilities (if at all) but I’ve heard your rendition a number of times. It’s a very soulful rendition in every sense. And once again I love the imagery that surrounds you. Wherever the aspirations or fantasies of contemporary urban India lead I am not persuaded that they are very often in sync with the ideals and models represented by the man who once inhabited Jorasanko or indeed the man who stands there singing this national anthem.
We can all be for the seductions of contemporary technology, we can all enjoy our shopping stints in this globalization super bazaar but somewhere we must also try and preserve those Indian ideals that always insisted on not leaving anyone behind, not forgetting anyone. Even if it must be admitted that those who held such ideals did not deliver on them in the most optimal ways and sometimes not at all this does not mean that we should go to the other extreme, imagining as we consume away that somehow those we’ve willing forgotten will also be somehow helped in some future far far far away. It is rather easy to develop a good conscience this way. We consume in the present and those who are left behind will have their chance some day.
And so you at that site represents for me the best aspirations of that other model that we are always in a hurry to kick at these days. This is also why I have always insisted on your iconic cinema. Not as a nostalgia trip much less some frozen-in-time fidelity, certainly not for a foolish desire to keep you imprisoned in one kind of genre. But the space in which that cinema operated deserves very much to be invented anew with each generation. Because it raised questions of justice in particularly potent ways. It is not at all true, even though we imagine this to be the case, that such a question of justice is foremost in the consciousness of every generation.]

Dalip Kumar should have refused to accept this award as it is too late for him to be honoured with Padm Vibushan. He should have got it some 30 years back. He deserved Bharat Ratna directly.
