Aamir Khan invited for Women In The World Summit
Aamir Khan only Bollywood actor to be invited for Women In The World Summit.
Aamir Khan attended the Women In The World Summit which took place in New York on 22nd April evening. Aamir is the only Bollywood actor to have been invited to the Women In The World Summit. Also, amongst the participants, Aamir was the only male who joined their panel of discussion!
The sixth annual Women In The World Summit saw great change makers of today and tomorrow participating at the event, with Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep and Hilary Clinton among others present there.
Aamir addressed the issue of tackling taboos in India. Zainab Salbi, who is an Iraqi-American humanitarian, entrepreneur, author, and media commentator, interacted with Aamir at the event and discussed Aamir’s work and his views.
He interacted at length with the other guests present at the event.

As we reported earlier, OK Kanmani is being given a huge welcome in overseas markets such as the US, UK and Australia. In USA, the film has supposedly crossed the coveted 0.5 million USD gross mark and has entered the all-time Top 10 among Tamil films.
Recently Yennai Arindhaal grossed a similar amount and now it has been bested by OK Kanmani. This year, ‘I’ has by far performed the best in the US and now OKK follows ‘I’ in the 2nd place.
The to-date US gross of OK Kanmani is reported to be 520,084 USD (3.29 crores) and the 2nd weekend is also expected to be great due to the regular inflow of crowd to theaters even on the weekdays.
Cold Fearsome Depp. Hope this is his Big comeback movie. Seems to have brilliantly pulled off Whitey Bulger. Amazing that James will get to see his biography before he dies in jail.
Just saw Avengers – Age of Ultron. I thought it was a tad below my expectations. Too much going on it and too much sound…Too less of wit…I liked Hulk and Black Widow the best and I thought Whedon could have developed their romance a little further. But I guess there is only that much one can do when you have to fit 6 superheroes and 2 budding superheroes in one movie…See it without much expectations and you might not mind it.
to be honest I didn’t much care for the first one either. To the extent that Hollywood can make a better Marvel deal that’s not just a collection of SFX moments, that too not the most imaginative ones, it’s much more likely to happen with an Iron Man or a Captain America.
“I’d love to do a tragedy, a classic Shakespearean tragedy, I have not done that. But right now I am really enjoying having fun. In between I went through a phase where I was doing very serious intense films and after that I just wanted to go out there and be uninhibited and so mad stuff, take out all that excessive energy. Which I am doing that right now. So you know when I do a Happy New Year, a Housefull or a Hera Pheri, I am enjoying that zone right now. I don’t know maybe after this phase gets over, I’d love to do something very intense and tragic.”
Nepal tragedy. The mighty himalaya shakes. Trekkars lose their lives. Important structures bite the dust. The unending human tragedy. The effect is felt till andhra pradesh in the south. Delhi is no longer safe and there must be effective plan to deal with any disaster. Earthquake knows no boundaries. It struck gujarat, maharashtra, north east and some parts south of vindhyas though not very deadly.
So many questions arise.
What happens to the nuclear plants and arsenal in the wake of massive earthquake?
Will zoo animals and animals in national parks escape and create further panic?
What about fire hazards due to exploding gas cylinders and cars?
Coastal areas will have to face tsunamis too.
I only hope boi will not use the phrase earth shattering to describe bo performance.
Earthquake early-warning systems have been deployed in only a handful of the world’s seismic hot zones, Hellweg said. They can warn of quakes as much as a few minutes before they strike. Countries with such systems include Mexico, Japan, and the United States, where the most advanced system is California’s state-run ShakeAlert.
They consist of stations housing seismometers that can detect P waves, non-destructive waves produced by an earthquake, that travel through Earth’s crust faster than S waves, the ones that shake the ground.
Once P waves reach a seismic station, the information is transmitted via phone lines, modems or satellite to labs. There, computers deploy advanced algorithms to calculate the origin and magnitude of the earthquake that generated the waves.
ShakeAlert gave the San Francisco Bay Area five to 10 seconds notice when the 2014 Napa earthquake hit.
“If Nepal had a seismic network that operated as the seismic stations in Northern California did in the Napa quake,” Hellweg said, “people in Kathmandu would probably have had 15 to 20 seconds warning.” That could have been enough to take cover under tables or even escape some collapsing buildings.
The systems do not come cheap. Capital investment costs for an early warning system for the entire west coast of the United States would total $38.3 million, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated last year, with annual maintenance and operations totaling $16.1 million.
Since 2012, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in the San Francisco area has been tied into ShakeAlert. A signal from the earthquake warning system automatically decelerates BART trains before a quake of magnitude 4 (if local) or 5 (if distant) arrives, averting potentially disastrous derailments.
The system is not perfect, however. If the epicenter of a quake were actually in the San Francisco Bay Area, BART would have no warning: the P and S waves arrive almost simultaneously.
Japan’s early-warning system, operated by the Meteorological Agency, is more extensive.
Designed to send alerts to computers, municipal agencies and others when an earthquake will be powerful enough to crack walls, Japan’s system has issued public alerts since 2007. Bullet trains, nuclear reactors, and factories are tied into the system, and shut down automatically when the 2011 Tohoku quake struck, triggering a tsunami that caused a nuclear accident at Fukushima. Cellphone alerts told schoolchildren to take cover.
The system saved “thousands of lives,” Berkeley seismologist Richard Allen told a recent scientific conference.
I too enjoyed Rahasya a fair bit (not this this is a good film or anything and it’s certainly quite a s step down from The Stoneman Murders) chiefly because of Kay Kay’s performance. But what irked me was the director unnecessarily adding bits from the Aarushi murder case to a standar Agatha Christie like plot. If he wanted to make a film on the case, he should have made a proper film on the subject. I am hoping Meghna Gulzar’s Talwar will be a worthwhile film

glad you are safe. Though the situation was seen coming weeks ago. DC/Baltimore the AGs, the Mayors, the council men and women are all to blame for their city’s systemic inequality mess. Obviously no room for looting, but I can see why there is such rage. The system needs an overhaul.
Ram Kapoor, who will be seen sharing the screen with actress Sunny Leone in “Kuch Kuch Locha Hai”, says that the forthcoming comedy caper is a family drama. He also says that he can even watch the film with his parents and in-laws.
“It’s not an adult comedy. It’s a family comedy which is going to be an U rated film,” Ram Kapoor told IANS.
“I can watch this film with my family including my parents and in-laws. My in-laws are Marathi Brahmins and very conservative but I am confident that they will like it,” he added.
Ask him if he was skeptical about working with Sunny, he said: “I have never been skeptical about anything. I love to take chances, I want to grow as an actor and you can grow only if you do different films.”
“Kuch Kuch Locha Hai” is directed by Devang Dholakia. Slated to release on May 8, it also features Evelyn Sharma and Navdeep Chhabra.
The movie’s performance is so strong that Behindwoods has gone ahead and declared Kanchana 2 a Superhit just after the second weekend against the usual practice of waiting till the third weekend, before announcing the verdict of a movie. If the movie continues to perform so well at the box office, it is a given that it would be declared a Blockbuster in the weeks to come.
Mani Ratnam’s O Kadhal Kanmani is doing tremendous business at the USA box office. The film has already surpassed the collections of both Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Kaththi and Thala Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal.
Trade pundits say that the film will also beat Kochadaiiyaan’s USA box office collection by today and end up as #7 among Tamil films at USA box office.
Not just the Tamil version, OK Bangaram, the Telugu version of the film is also minting good money at the USA box office.
Combining both the Tamil and Telugu version, the film is on track to cross 1 million $ at the USA box office which is phenomenal for the budget involved!
Raghava Lawrence’s Kanchana 2 is unstoppable at the Tamil Nadu box office and according to trade sources, the film has grossed approximately 40 crores in its first ten days which is on par with some of the successful films of top heroes in Tamil cinema.
Sources say after a long time, Kanchana 2 is the most profitable film in Tamil cinema that everyone associated with the film are reaping gold at the box office.
Theater owners say that though Kamal Haasan’s Uttama Villain and Vai Raja Vai is arriving on May 1, the demand for Kanchana 2 is still on and they have tough time in allotting equal shows to both these films.
The film is also having a huge demand in Telugu too ans it will release soon. In Kerala the film is a huge hit. If all goes well, Kanchana 2 might enter the 100 cr club soon!
Chennai Box-Office – April 24 to 26

The summer box-office has kick started in a big way. Both releases of last week, Laurence’s horror comedy Kanchana2 and Mani Ratnam’s love story OK Kanmani are turning out to be hits.
Lawrence directed and acted Kanchana 2, is a blockbuster of gargantuan proposition. It is doing well across A,B and C centres, and everybody seemed to be enjoying it. The film has grossed over Rs 3 Cr in Chennai city from 16 screens in 10 days and is the clear number 1 at CBO, by a mile!
In the number two position is Mani Ratnam’s OK Kanmani, which is rocking the multiplexes. After a long time Ratnam has a genuine hit, the film is touching a gross of almost Rs 2 Cr in Chennai city.
And in third place is the super hero 3D film Avengers – Age Of Ultron, which got smaller screens, as bigger screens were taken over by Tamil biggies. The film would have taken a bigger opening, if KDM was not delayed and many screens cancelled their noon shows.
Komban holds tight at number four. Meanwhile, Fast and Furious 7, at number five still continues to attract summer holiday crowds.
Also, Aadhi and Tara seem to be living in a bubble. The world around them is filled with well-wishing uncles, sweet maamis and progressive friends.
In fact, all it takes Tara to convince Aadhi’s landlord for the live-in is belt out a Carnatic music bhajan! Everything fell into place a little too easy, says Deepti. “I missed the intense, risky love portrayed in films like Raavan and Dil Se. Here, both the girl and boy belong to the same class, caste, religion, and their life has no challenges. The movie seems to be hinting that the old generation is okay with us falling in love and even living together so long as we keep these yardsticks in mind!”

She’s a Sikh girl from a highly conservative family who became a high-flying gambler in Las Vegas in order to rebel against her oppressive upbringing, and then ended up robbing a series of American banks to pay back her poker debts. This is the kind of tale that would be accused of being completely unrealistic if we saw it in a Hindi film.
just goes on to show that you could be precocious-graduate high school at 15 and nursing school at 18, doesn’t mean you have akkal. She is just a child who made some utterly stupid choices in life.
AR Rahman: The maestro who inspires mastery
Rohith Jayaraman, whose vocals in Yeh Jo Des are hard to miss, is a student of music therapy at the institute; trained in Carnatic music, he joined the Ensemble by chance after listening to them sing in a rehearsal. On the choice of the two songs, Jiya Jale and Yeh Jo Des, taken from Rahman’s vast repertoire, he says over email: ‘For our first song we wanted some groove. It was our first ensemble video for Rahman sir’s residency at Berklee, so we wanted it to be fun and exciting. It’s a tough choice to make, when you have legendary tunes from movies like Lagaan, Dil Se, Bombay, etcetera. We chose Jiya Jale because it had enough in it for the whole ensemble, as well as the potential for us to explore and inject our Indian Ensemble flavour into it. Yeh Jo Des was an easy pick… apart from the beauty and patriotism of the song itself, it hit home for all of us.’ The song, which appears effortless, was a lot of hard work. It took about 18 hours just to record the choir, soloists, band, and the Berklee World Strings portion
High levels of development usually coincide with a decline in religiosity. So I’d wager that humaneness eventually triumphs over religion as countries across the world continue to develop (not just economically but also socially).
“Gabbar Is Back” knocks the bottom off the action genre with a breathless ode to Swachh Bharat. The film may appear louder-than-life to the dainty-hearted. But the tone is unapologetic massy. You can’t change the disintegrating social order by being subtle.
Miraculously, Akshay Kumar does exactly that.
Don’t ask how. Just go for his bearded, brooding leadership qualities. Swachh Bharat needs such a hero.
Set several decades apart, Piku and Byomkesh nevertheless inhabit similar worlds which orbit around the central notion of Bengaliness. Importantly, this is not Bollywood’s notion of Bengaliness but an insider’s view of a culture and a people. Both Dibakar and Shoojit are true-blue Bengali bhadralok – the first a ‘probashi’ from Delhi, the second a Barrackpore boy who has already once offered Bollywood a window into the Bengali soul with Vicky Donor.
Both Piku and Byomkesh were filmed mostly in Kolkata. Dibakar’s period piece recreated a pre-Independence Calcutta of trams, rickshaws and narrow, twisting streets busy with scurrying pedestrians. Shoojit’s Kolkata, set 60 years later, isn’t very different, allowing for the updated makes of vehicles on the road. The trams and rickshaws are still on the streets, though whether they’ve made it to screen we’ll know only once the film releases. The scurrying pedestrians are most certainly still there and the lanes are also still narrow.
In Byomkesh, Dibakar offers up glimpses of a fictionalised Coffee House and Presidency College, both Kolkata institutions. Kolkata dwellers will also recognise the Bengal Club, used as a filming location for the fancy dress party towards the end of the film. Shoojit picked landmarks familiar even to non-Kolkatans, with pictures of shooting around Esplanade and Howrah Bridge posted on social media. Several scenes have also been shot in the local stately homes of Burdwan Palace and Laha Baari.
The second story is about Richard Corliss of Time who in 2002 attended a press screening of Devdas at the Cannes Film Festival.
During the screening all the critics watching the film walked out (as did most Academy members when the film was screened for the best foreign language Oscar selection process).
But Corliss liked Devdas and he sat through the three-hour long screening.
Corliss started loving Bollywood late in his career, but he gave everything he had in his power as a critic to promote India’s Hindi language commercial cinema.

GABBAR IS BACK is an official remake of the southern hit RAMANAA. It has the South Indian stamp of filmmaking written all over it. Ear-splitting-background-score, over-the-top action and humour emanating from strange food references like samosa-and-laal-chatni. One can also draw references with the recently released UNGLI which appointed a somewhat similar modus operandi for tackling corruption. GABBAR IS BACK’s director Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi aka ‘Krish’ needs to be applauded for making a topical film at a time when the country is being swept by the corruption wave. Despite the fact that the film is a remake of the hit Tamil film RAMANAA, Krish makes all the possible efforts to give GABBAR IS BACK a feel that will surely touch everyone’s heart alike. Despite this being his debut film, his story telling through his direction is praiseworthy! He does reasonable justice to the film’s story (A. R. Murugadoss) and vice versa.
Akshay Kumar’s Gabbar Is Back to bring ‘achche din’ for industry? Trade is confident
It is no more a breaking news that industry is going through really bad times this year. So after Baby, which stays on to be the biggest Bollywood grosser of the year so far, will it be Akshay Kumar again who will act as a savior and bring it out of the doldrums with Krish directed Gabbar Is Back? The industry seems confident.

Akshay Kumar films are always awaited with bated breath, despite him doing four to five a year, and that too for so many years. On the other hand, other stars don’t even dare to tread the same path. Every release of his does bring expectations from trade and public alike. Gabbar Is Back is no exception. It has generated good curiosity and audiences are keenly waiting for it. I feel that this time too, Akshay will deliver and provide the much needed pump at the dying Box Office.

I am very confident about Gabbar Is Back as it’s the only big star film coming after a really long time. Since World Cup and now IPL, there haven’t been any major releases. However when a notable film arrives, it works, something that has been proven by Fast & Furious 7 as well as Avengers – Age of Ultron. So yes, fingers crossed for Gabbar Is Back. Akshay Kumar is a star and has a great loyal fan following. Also, the very title Gabbar will do its magic. Moreover, if I go back in time, whenever we have distributed a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, there has been magic, be it Black or Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Gabbar Is Back is looking good to me. It’s been a while since a hardcore commercial film has released and this is the perfect time for it. The trailer has been appreciated and the song ‘Teri Meri Kahani’ is a chartbuster already. I think the film will bring back the memories of Rowdy Rathore.
After experiencing major devastation and loss of life in the April 25 earthquake, Nepal was left with an unsavoury taste in its mouth after receiving packets of ‘beef masala’ as part of the relief package from Pakistan.
Since the majority-Hindu country treats cows as sacred and there is a blanket ban on slaughtering the animal, the development has the potential to trigger diplomatic acrimony between the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) member countries.
This is unfortunate, both sides are making this political. Pakistani spokesperson should admit they were insensitive here and maybe should’ve communicated better with the Nepalese that the MRE’s had some beef content in it but when they open it, they can choose discard it. Both Pakistan and India have provided some relief but the overall response has been pathetic to be honest. Already now 5000 people killed and more to come…this will take decades to recover from.

In between I went through a phase where I was doing very serious intense films and after that I just wanted to go out there and be uninhibited and so mad stuff, take out all that excessive energy. Which I am doing that right now. So you know when I do a Happy New Year, a Housefull or a Hera Pheri, I am enjoying that zone right now. I don’t know maybe after this phase gets over, I’d love to do something very intense and tragic.”

Nepal tragedy. The mighty himalaya shakes. Trekkars lose their lives. Important structures bite the dust. The unending human tragedy. The effect is felt till andhra pradesh in the south. Delhi is no longer safe and there must be effective plan to deal with any disaster. Earthquake knows no boundaries. It struck gujarat, maharashtra, north east and some parts south of vindhyas though not very deadly.
So many questions arise.
What happens to the nuclear plants and arsenal in the wake of massive earthquake?
Will zoo animals and animals in national parks escape and create further panic?
What about fire hazards due to exploding gas cylinders and cars?
Coastal areas will have to face tsunamis too.
I only hope boi will not use the phrase earth shattering to describe bo performance.

Earthquake early-warning systems have been deployed in only a handful of the world’s seismic hot zones, Hellweg said. They can warn of quakes as much as a few minutes before they strike. Countries with such systems include Mexico, Japan, and the United States, where the most advanced system is California’s state-run ShakeAlert.
They consist of stations housing seismometers that can detect P waves, non-destructive waves produced by an earthquake, that travel through Earth’s crust faster than S waves, the ones that shake the ground.
Once P waves reach a seismic station, the information is transmitted via phone lines, modems or satellite to labs. There, computers deploy advanced algorithms to calculate the origin and magnitude of the earthquake that generated the waves.
ShakeAlert gave the San Francisco Bay Area five to 10 seconds notice when the 2014 Napa earthquake hit.
“If Nepal had a seismic network that operated as the seismic stations in Northern California did in the Napa quake,” Hellweg said, “people in Kathmandu would probably have had 15 to 20 seconds warning.” That could have been enough to take cover under tables or even escape some collapsing buildings.
The systems do not come cheap. Capital investment costs for an early warning system for the entire west coast of the United States would total $38.3 million, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated last year, with annual maintenance and operations totaling $16.1 million.
Since 2012, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in the San Francisco area has been tied into ShakeAlert. A signal from the earthquake warning system automatically decelerates BART trains before a quake of magnitude 4 (if local) or 5 (if distant) arrives, averting potentially disastrous derailments.
The system is not perfect, however. If the epicenter of a quake were actually in the San Francisco Bay Area, BART would have no warning: the P and S waves arrive almost simultaneously.
Japan’s early-warning system, operated by the Meteorological Agency, is more extensive.
Designed to send alerts to computers, municipal agencies and others when an earthquake will be powerful enough to crack walls, Japan’s system has issued public alerts since 2007. Bullet trains, nuclear reactors, and factories are tied into the system, and shut down automatically when the 2011 Tohoku quake struck, triggering a tsunami that caused a nuclear accident at Fukushima. Cellphone alerts told schoolchildren to take cover.
The system saved “thousands of lives,” Berkeley seismologist Richard Allen told a recent scientific conference.

I too enjoyed Rahasya a fair bit (not this this is a good film or anything and it’s certainly quite a s step down from The Stoneman Murders) chiefly because of Kay Kay’s performance. But what irked me was the director unnecessarily adding bits from the Aarushi murder case to a standar Agatha Christie like plot. If he wanted to make a film on the case, he should have made a proper film on the subject. I am hoping Meghna Gulzar’s Talwar will be a worthwhile film

Ram Kapoor, who will be seen sharing the screen with actress Sunny Leone in “Kuch Kuch Locha Hai”, says that the forthcoming comedy caper is a family drama. He also says that he can even watch the film with his parents and in-laws.
“It’s not an adult comedy. It’s a family comedy which is going to be an U rated film,” Ram Kapoor told IANS.
“I can watch this film with my family including my parents and in-laws. My in-laws are Marathi Brahmins and very conservative but I am confident that they will like it,” he added.
Ask him if he was skeptical about working with Sunny, he said: “I have never been skeptical about anything. I love to take chances, I want to grow as an actor and you can grow only if you do different films.”
“Kuch Kuch Locha Hai” is directed by Devang Dholakia. Slated to release on May 8, it also features Evelyn Sharma and Navdeep Chhabra.

The movie’s performance is so strong that Behindwoods has gone ahead and declared Kanchana 2 a Superhit just after the second weekend against the usual practice of waiting till the third weekend, before announcing the verdict of a movie. If the movie continues to perform so well at the box office, it is a given that it would be declared a Blockbuster in the weeks to come.

Mani Ratnam’s O Kadhal Kanmani is doing tremendous business at the USA box office. The film has already surpassed the collections of both Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Kaththi and Thala Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal.
Trade pundits say that the film will also beat Kochadaiiyaan’s USA box office collection by today and end up as #7 among Tamil films at USA box office.
Not just the Tamil version, OK Bangaram, the Telugu version of the film is also minting good money at the USA box office.
Combining both the Tamil and Telugu version, the film is on track to cross 1 million $ at the USA box office which is phenomenal for the budget involved!

Raghava Lawrence’s Kanchana 2 is unstoppable at the Tamil Nadu box office and according to trade sources, the film has grossed approximately 40 crores in its first ten days which is on par with some of the successful films of top heroes in Tamil cinema.
Sources say after a long time, Kanchana 2 is the most profitable film in Tamil cinema that everyone associated with the film are reaping gold at the box office.
Theater owners say that though Kamal Haasan’s Uttama Villain and Vai Raja Vai is arriving on May 1, the demand for Kanchana 2 is still on and they have tough time in allotting equal shows to both these films.
The film is also having a huge demand in Telugu too ans it will release soon. In Kerala the film is a huge hit. If all goes well, Kanchana 2 might enter the 100 cr club soon!

The summer box-office has kick started in a big way. Both releases of last week, Laurence’s horror comedy Kanchana2 and Mani Ratnam’s love story OK Kanmani are turning out to be hits.
Lawrence directed and acted Kanchana 2, is a blockbuster of gargantuan proposition. It is doing well across A,B and C centres, and everybody seemed to be enjoying it. The film has grossed over Rs 3 Cr in Chennai city from 16 screens in 10 days and is the clear number 1 at CBO, by a mile!
In the number two position is Mani Ratnam’s OK Kanmani, which is rocking the multiplexes. After a long time Ratnam has a genuine hit, the film is touching a gross of almost Rs 2 Cr in Chennai city.
And in third place is the super hero 3D film Avengers – Age Of Ultron, which got smaller screens, as bigger screens were taken over by Tamil biggies. The film would have taken a bigger opening, if KDM was not delayed and many screens cancelled their noon shows.
Komban holds tight at number four. Meanwhile, Fast and Furious 7, at number five still continues to attract summer holiday crowds.

In fact, all it takes Tara to convince Aadhi’s landlord for the live-in is belt out a Carnatic music bhajan! Everything fell into place a little too easy, says Deepti. “I missed the intense, risky love portrayed in films like Raavan and Dil Se. Here, both the girl and boy belong to the same class, caste, religion, and their life has no challenges. The movie seems to be hinting that the old generation is okay with us falling in love and even living together so long as we keep these yardsticks in mind!”

Have you guys heard of the ‘Bombshell Bandit’? She’s a Sikh girl from a highly conservative family who became a high-flying gambler in Las Vegas in order to rebel against her oppressive upbringing, and then ended up robbing a series of American banks to pay back her poker debts. This is the kind of tale that would be accused of being completely unrealistic if we saw it in a Hindi film.

On the choice of the two songs, Jiya Jale and Yeh Jo Des, taken from Rahman’s vast repertoire, he says over email: ‘For our first song we wanted some groove. It was our first ensemble video for Rahman sir’s residency at Berklee, so we wanted it to be fun and exciting. It’s a tough choice to make, when you have legendary tunes from movies like Lagaan, Dil Se, Bombay, etcetera. We chose Jiya Jale because it had enough in it for the whole ensemble, as well as the potential for us to explore and inject our Indian Ensemble flavour into it. Yeh Jo Des was an easy pick… apart from the beauty and patriotism of the song itself, it hit home for all of us.’ The song, which appears effortless, was a lot of hard work. First review for Gabbar Is back:
“Gabbar Is Back” knocks the bottom off the action genre with a breathless ode to Swachh Bharat. The film may appear louder-than-life to the dainty-hearted. But the tone is unapologetic massy. You can’t change the disintegrating social order by being subtle.
Miraculously, Akshay Kumar does exactly that.
Don’t ask how. Just go for his bearded, brooding leadership qualities. Swachh Bharat needs such a hero.

Set several decades apart, Piku and Byomkesh nevertheless inhabit similar worlds which orbit around the central notion of Bengaliness. Importantly, this is not Bollywood’s notion of Bengaliness but an insider’s view of a culture and a people. Both Dibakar and Shoojit are true-blue Bengali bhadralok – the first a ‘probashi’ from Delhi, the second a Barrackpore boy who has already once offered Bollywood a window into the Bengali soul with Vicky Donor.
Both Piku and Byomkesh were filmed mostly in Kolkata. Dibakar’s period piece recreated a pre-Independence Calcutta of trams, rickshaws and narrow, twisting streets busy with scurrying pedestrians. Shoojit’s Kolkata, set 60 years later, isn’t very different, allowing for the updated makes of vehicles on the road. The trams and rickshaws are still on the streets, though whether they’ve made it to screen we’ll know only once the film releases. The scurrying pedestrians are most certainly still there and the lanes are also still narrow.
In Byomkesh, Dibakar offers up glimpses of a fictionalised Coffee House and Presidency College, both Kolkata institutions. Kolkata dwellers will also recognise the Bengal Club, used as a filming location for the fancy dress party towards the end of the film. Shoojit picked landmarks familiar even to non-Kolkatans, with pictures of shooting around Esplanade and Howrah Bridge posted on social media. Several scenes have also been shot in the local stately homes of Burdwan Palace and Laha Baari.

The second story is about Richard Corliss of Time who in 2002 attended a press screening of Devdas at the Cannes Film Festival.
During the screening all the critics watching the film walked out (as did most Academy members when the film was screened for the best foreign language Oscar selection process).
But Corliss liked Devdas and he sat through the three-hour long screening.
Corliss started loving Bollywood late in his career, but he gave everything he had in his power as a critic to promote India’s Hindi language commercial cinema.

GABBAR IS BACK is an official remake of the southern hit RAMANAA. It has the South Indian stamp of filmmaking written all over it. Ear-splitting-background-score, over-the-top action and humour emanating from strange food references like samosa-and-laal-chatni. One can also draw references with the recently released UNGLI which appointed a somewhat similar modus operandi for tackling corruption. GABBAR IS BACK’s director Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi aka ‘Krish’ needs to be applauded for making a topical film at a time when the country is being swept by the corruption wave. Despite the fact that the film is a remake of the hit Tamil film RAMANAA, Krish makes all the possible efforts to give GABBAR IS BACK a feel that will surely touch everyone’s heart alike. Despite this being his debut film, his story telling through his direction is praiseworthy! He does reasonable justice to the film’s story (A. R. Murugadoss) and vice versa.

So after Baby, which stays on to be the biggest Bollywood grosser of the year so far, will it be Akshay Kumar again who will act as a savior and bring it out of the doldrums with Krish directed Gabbar Is Back? The industry seems confident.

After experiencing major devastation and loss of life in the April 25 earthquake, Nepal was left with an unsavoury taste in its mouth after receiving packets of ‘beef masala’ as part of the relief package from Pakistan.
Since the majority-Hindu country treats cows as sacred and there is a blanket ban on slaughtering the animal, the development has the potential to trigger diplomatic acrimony between the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) member countries.

This is unfortunate, both sides are making this political. Pakistani spokesperson should admit they were insensitive here and maybe should’ve communicated better with the Nepalese that the MRE’s had some beef content in it but when they open it, they can choose discard it. Both Pakistan and India have provided some relief but the overall response has been pathetic to be honest. Already now 5000 people killed and more to come…this will take decades to recover from.
