Gabbar Is Back Has Good Opening
    Friday 01 May 2015 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back is had a very good start at some places and was decent in other places. Overall the opening was good at around 40-45 %. It is the best opening for a Hindi film this year but that is not saying much as hardly any films have opened. The occupancies are less than Fast & Furious 7 and The Avengers – Age Of Ultron but has more screens than those films.

It is the best start for an Akshay Kumar starrers in a long time. Much better than films like Entertainment, Baby and Holiday though the last named film picked up rapidly from late afternoon.

The opening was best in Rajasthan, CI and UP while the big multiplexes in metros have just average start. The film has released on a holiday which is why the opening is good but on a holiday the opening should be excellent or bumper. The first day number will be good for Gabbar Is Back but the opening morning numbers don’t suggest a 15 crore nett plus number which was the requirement for the film due to holiday for May Day

What a treat for Kamal fans!!! 3 back to back movies. This is the Drishyam remake , a role in which he will just be brilliant. I am worried about the Hindi version starring Devgan. I like Devgan but he is not the right guy for that part.

  3. Drishyam was quite good. I am not too sure about the Bollywood remake. While I think that Devgan is versatile enough to do justice to his part, my main doubt is on Kamat’s ability to come up with a good remake. I watched Force and it was a total let-down.

Johar is simply presenting the film in Hindi (it will be dubbed just like Eega was), no question of a remake here (thankfully). Eega was one of the most compulsively entertaining films from the last few years.

  5. BO update: Gabbar Is Back starts strong
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, May 1, 2015 – 15:02 IST

After the last few weeks proving disastrous for Indian films, with the Hollywood releases raking in the moolah, this week we see the release of the much talked about film GABBAR IS BACK. The film featuring Akshay Kumar that has been in the news thanks to its message of fighting corruption is one that has been keenly awaited.

As expected, the film has taken off on a good note, with reports suggesting an approximately 75% opening. With positive reviews and good word of mouth coupled with the fact that the audience has been eagerly awaiting Akshay’s next release after BABY, GABBAR IS BACK is expected to dominate over the weekend.

On the whole, with the added advantage of a holiday weekend, GABBAR IS BACK is expected to do brisk business with an increase over evening and night shows.

Director Krish, known in down south for his fashioning flamboyant fables, here exercises unexpected control when one least expects it. This is where this film about a self-appointed anti-corruption vigilante scores among the audience. It taps Akshay Kumar’s unbound energy and harnesses it at key points of the narrative to underscore rather than over-punctuate the theme of corruption. The dialogues (by Rajat Arora) may seem dramatic but these rightly raise our concern. Dialogues about a corrupt-free nation have the power to sway the masses with idealistic rhetoric. Swachh Bharat too gets its due that is compelling rather than corny in a sequence.

And to the character’s good fortune, that are all well delivered by Khiladi Kumar. The way in which he delivers his lines on the rampancy of corruption, his conduct and his wry detached disdain for the corrupt, are all brought to the surface with a forceful equilibrium constantly at play. Akshay makes you sit up and listen(shut up/sit down??) without raising his voice against the questionable deeds. The lines flow with furious passion without getting flooded in bombast.

Akshay is a star-actor at the peak of his acting prowess. He exudes the kind of understated confidence while delivering his dialogues about the nation filled with corruption that requires a lot of self-control and inner confidence.”

For fellow Akki fan, Naveen…there are lot of good reviews out there.

        • “Had it not been Akshay Kumar the screenplay would have been more of a ‘scream-play’. The characters, the twists and turns consistently cry for your attention. However, they have some sensitivity that redeems at times, without which Gabbar would have been just another loud and garish film about corruption in high-rise places where builders are the baddies.

Besides Akshay, it’s Sunil Grover, known as the drag queen Gutthi on Kapil Sharma’s comedy show, who plays a low-rank police constable with sobriety.

Jaideep Ahlawat, who is usually so riveting on screen, here seems uncomfortable in a CBI officer avatar. The villains are all clumsy cardboard cut-outs conveying the corrupt element with as much subtlety as an uncovered sewage.

The women are sketchily portrayed. Shruti Haasan as the leading lady plays a lawyer who is busy delivering homilies to Akshay and others rather than fighting court cases. Chitrangda pops up to do an awful item song that is poorly edited. Kareena Kapoor Khan in a cameo sings a romantic song with Akshay and perishes in a clumsily staged building collapse.

          Final verdict-
Despite everything, the film survives to tell-a-tale that is relevant today. ‘Gabbar Is Back’ knocks the bottom off the action genre with a breathless ode to Swachh Bharat. The film may appear louder-than-life instead of larger-than-life but the tone is unapologetic massy. You can’t change the disintegrating social order by being delicate towards it. Akshay Kumar amazingly, through his bearded, brooding leadership, explains that”

      • I think something an opening around 10-12cr would be a more reasonable target for the film. If it does above that, it would be a very good opening.

My prediction would be a 12cr opening, 60cr first week and 95-100cr lifetime.

It would be a decent achievement if it manages to do that. This year’s movies are barely managing to reach 30cr. And also, Gabbar seems to be more single screen-friendly rather than multiplex-friendly kind of deal.

These 90-120cr grossers are going to be Akshay Kumar’s kind of range. It’s still commendable though if he delivers 4 movies within that range this year.

  7. Uttama Villain release further delayed

Kamal Haasan starrer ‘Uttama Villain’ is in the eye of the storm yet again. The early morning, noon and afternoon shows of Kamal Haasan-starrer “Uttama Villain” on Friday were cancelled across Tamil Nadu. A few fans were even given tickets to another movie.

Theatre officials were unable to give an answer to the sudden cancellation of the shows of the movie that has generated a fair amount of controversy over the last few months. Those who booked tickets for the movie are yet to receive confirmation as to the time of release of the movie.

    IANS adds

According to sources, the shows were cancelled owing to some financial problems between the film’s makers and financiers. The issue, according to sources, was expected to be settled before the 3 p.m. show. However, the issue remained unresolved even in the afternoon, leading to a cancellation of the 3 p.m. show as well. The shows have also been cancelled in Karnataka, Andhra and Telangana as well.

On the contrary these opening are considered very good by the industry, fans and other stars.
I think the industry has started acknowledging Akshay Model of stardom which is quite unique – 350 cr nett per year over 3-4 films. Of course when he does movies like Entertainment it’s a problem though that too becomes a hit on satellite channel.
His recent quality films like Baby, S26, OMG, Holiday, and now Gabbar within a span of 2 years is too good. So opening is not the only criteria. Of course if only he has done this in 2008 things would have been different. But his strategy of multiple release with good content is working big time.

  10. Interestingly the villain in Gabbar is played by Suman – the South actor. Suman was the guy who played the Shashi Kapoor role in the Deewar remake in Thee in early 1980. He went on to do lot of hero roles and later became the villain in Sivaji and now he has finally got into Hindi cinema 40 years after his debut. Some of these paths these actors take over their career are very interesting.

I was recently very intrigued seeing Sulagna Panigrahi in a Tamil movie called Isai (a very preposterous movie but you will watch it just for curiosity once you start seeing it) – very loosely based on Ilaiyaraja and ARR ‘rivalry’. She was the half twin in the Hindi serial Amber Dhaara and then went on to play a prostitute in Murder 2 and was rechristened as ‘Savitri’ for the SJ Suryah movie – Isai. And As SJ Suryah movie goes, it is replete with navel twitching, bosom shaking and all that goes in a SJ Suryah movie (Apex are you listening). Again, I wouldn’t have expected that simple looking girl in Amber Dhaara to appear in Isai as a lead heroine..

I watched a bit of Bade Acche Lagte hai as my wife was into it. But otherwise the last time I watched a serial in its entirety was during the ‘Junoon’ days. But the family do watch serials so you tend to know what’s going on TV and the story line…

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Dazzles with $27.6 Million Thursday Debut in North America

“Showings started at 7 p.m. The domestic number came in far above the $18.7 million grossed in midnight showings by “The Avengers” on its first Thursday night in May 2012 on its way to a record-setting $207.4 million for the weekend. Box office trackers believe that “Avengers: Age of Ultron” can break that mark this weekend with openings at 4,276 locations.

Exit polling from the domestic previews showed 60% of the audience was male and 45% was under the age of 25.

The Thursday night preview number for the sequel fell short of the domestic preview record of $43.5 million, set in July 2011, by Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” “Furious 7″ took in $15.8 million in Thursday night previews on April 2. The “Avengers: Age of Ultron” number included $3 milion from Imax showings, nearly 30% above the previous record of $2.3 million from “The Dark Knight Rises.””

  16. Gabbar Is Back First Day Gets Holiday Advantage
    Saturday 02 May 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back is has had a good first day as it grossed 11.75 crore nett but the holiday factor added around 1.50 crore nett. It would have been more but Marathi film Time Pass 2 which smashed all records in Maharashtra (outside Mumbai city and Pune) including Happy New Year and Dhoom 3.

Gabbar Is Back did well in Maharashtra but could have been better if the Marathi film was not there. The collections in Mumbai will be 3.75 crore nett plus while Delhi/ UP is around 2.30 crore nett. The film had record opening for Akshay Kumar starrer in Mysore of 61 lakhs nett but was because it was holiday.

Overall the near 12 crore nett number may seem good as a number but in real terms it would have been good if it was not a part holiday. The film really needed a 14 crore nett plus number as a drop is inevitable today. Basically the film has to record to the same number on Saturday as Friday if the film has to have a chance to cover. This would give it a chance of taking its weekend to near 40 crore but Saturday being same as Friday will be tough.

as for kamalahassan hes on a different plane–doesnt need box office validation–thats for monkeys like rajni kant (&his fans)

    as for radhika apte—-
Amid all the hoopla regarding Radhika Apte’s video that was leaked via Whatsapp three days ago, it is the apt time to put aside everyone’s opinion and listen to what the lady herself has to say about the issue:
“I saw it and laughed it off because it is really funny… I am really busy. I can’t waste my time doing that. My family and I never get affected by any of these things. So it just doesn’t bother me. I don’t have time for this. You know the whole world has lots of people, who have no jobs. They sit at home and do whatever they want to do. So you can’t waste your time on going and making a complaint or even looking at it.”
Quite in contrast to Anurag Kashyap, who got so agitated with the footage of his film leaking that he approached the Mumbai Police for an investigation on the same.
But what could have been a complete case of public mockery and embarrassment was handled rather spectacularly by Radhika, who chose not to let the incident affect her. It is definitely empowering to see Radhika paving a clearer way ahead for all other actresses to not let such absurdity affect their sincerity towards their professional life.
    We’re proud of you, Radhika!

I guess, going by its trend it will wrap up around the 100cr mark (maybe slightly lower in BOI’s case).

I don’t think Akshay Kumark’s days are over or that he is going the Govinda way. Far from that. Most actors today would be happy achieving a 90-120cr range. I think it is currently Devgan’s benchmark as well (when it’s not a Rohit Shetty film) except that it looks a bit more within Akshay’s reach due to the volume of films he does. But, for guys like Aamir and Salman, the benchmark is really way more higher.

It’s also certain that Kumar hasn’t been delivering the kind of opening he was managing a few years back. There was a time when his mindless comedies opened thunderously well. And there was a time when he was the only one keeping up with Aamir and SRK. The decline started with Chandni Chowk TC. Now, he is opening better movies moderately well at’ best and is depending on trending to come up with a decent total. It’s obvious he joined the masala bandwagon too late when he had all the elements to succeed there.

Good thing is that Akshay is choosing a film with good content quite realising that he needs to rebuild his innings of he has to keep his release strategy same. With 300-350 cr nett every year from 3-4 releases, his strategy is now working well and lapped by media and fans alike. Just remove Baby and Gabbar out of release this year and we will be staring at a collapsed Hindi film industry with highest grosser as 55cr in 5 months. Fell short of the record by $20 million. I think the sporting events did have an impact, I know for me personally I am waiting to see it next weekend. But why does $187 still feel disappointing? The reviews weren’t as strong for this one…is this the first Marvel/Disney crack??

Box Office: ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Scores Second Biggest Opening With $187.7 Million

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” scored the second biggest domestic opening in history this weekend, kicking off summer blockbuster season with a mammoth $187.7 million debut.

Globally, the film is a juggernaut, pulling in an estimated $627 million in 12 days of release. At that pace, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” should pass $1 billion.

One record remained tantalizingly out of grasp, however, for Captain America, Iron Man and company. Going into the weekend many analysts predicted that “Avengers: Age of Ultron” would top the $207.4 million haul posted in 2012 by the first film in the super-team series. That high-water mark will stand…at least until “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” lands in theaters next Christmas.

Part of the issue may have been weaker reviews than the first “Avengers” film, as well as competition from the NBA playoffs, the Kentucky Derby and the hotly anticipated boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

The “Avengers: Age of Ultron” results are still an astonishing feat and a testament to the powerful sway that Disney and Marvel have over American moviegoers. The three biggest North American debuts in history are now all Marvel movies, with “Avengers:Age of Ultron” displacing “Iron Man 3″ and its $174.1 million opening from its runner-up perch on the all-time list.

  31. AAP, Congress and BJP fight over Akshay Kumar –

Akshay Kumar seemed very excited on the eve of his latest movie Gabbar Is Back’s release. He is playing the role of a common man who decided to wage war against corruption and teach people who indulge in fraudulent activities a lesson. When everyone was busy praising Akshay Kumar for making a movie on such an important topic, Arvind Kejriwal termed the movie nonsensical. He said the movie was unrealistic and such a thing can’t happen in real life.

Congress and BJP attacked Kejriwal for his comments. “Didn’t Kejriwal start his political career as a crusader who advocated a corruption free society? When he can do it, then why is he criticizing Akshay Kumar for doing the same in a movie? I think it’s because the Aam Aadmi Party has moved from fighting corruption to staging dharnas and mindless protests,” said a Congress leader.

“It will be much better if Arvind Kejriwal pays more attention to fulfilling the unrealistic promises he made during the election rather than worrying about the superficial way in which Akshay Kumar is fighting corruption in the movie. A movie is fictitious, so what is shown in it doesn’t really matter and Kejriwal needs to realize this. He should stop diverting media and public attention from important topics by whining over useless issues,” said a senior BJP member, who seemed annoyed with all the AAP dramatics.

ABP news published a wrong story and it spread as everything negative about AAP spreads.
Then they decided to apologise for this wrong story and tweeted about it.

Similarly there is proof about the other allegations being wrong, but these don’t get publicity nor does the media talk much about it so the wrong perception stays and the bigger parties are happy and get some relief from their fear.
I’m so glad that the Nepali SM trended #GoHomeIndianMedia in the world and India.

  34. SUPERSTAR RAJINI TO REVISIT HIS GANGSTER DAYS?
    By Kaushik L M | May 04, 2015

Earlier in the day, we had reported that Superstar Rajinikanth is expected to join hands with Madras fame director Ranjith. Now the latest we hear is that the film will apparently be a gangster flick. It’s been a while since Rajinikanth did a full-fledged gangster’s role. Though he has acted in roles that had tinges of grey in his recent movies, his last outright gangster film was Baashha way back in 1995. We also hear that Rajinikanth is expected to play his age in this film.

The Superstar is said to have strongly shown the urge to do a natural movie with lot of scope for acting. Ranjith’s script seems to have impressed Rajinikanth the most, among all the scripts he had heard.

  37. The first signs of a backlash in Nepal against the Indian media, manifested in the furiously trending hashtag #GoHomeIndianMedia, were evident from early last week.

As Kathmandu city began to return to normal and internet connections were restored, several locals began talking about a video that was up on YouTube about the first Indian Army chopper landing at the epicentre of the earthquake — at Barpak in Gorkha district. “The camera first shows images from inside the helicopter of the landing and it shows how people are running toward the helicopter. Then it pans around inside the chopper and all I could see was two journalists sitting inside,” exclaimed Sanjay Thapa, a doctor in Kathmandu. “I was thinking, if you were able to go to that place then the least you should have done is take doctors and take food and medical supplies,” he adds.

They were doing PR for MOdi as THE man who rescued the poor Nepalis. They wanted to start a hashtag with the people saying how grateful they were to Modi for saving them on channels as # ThankyouModi. It didn’t work because the people were so nervous and afraid of the whole disaster.
There were people cursing the world for not helping and only Indians &RSS doing ALL the work because thats what TV channels showed all day long.
Those saying media is everywhere the same don’t know the horror that it has become. At least in other countries you know who is supporting who but here they all call themselves unbiased and neutral.

HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times, New Delhi| Updated: May 06, 2015 01:34 IST

Filmmaker Mani Ratnam was reportedly admitted to a Delhi hospital on Tuesday due to cardiac problems.

When contacted, the hospital authorities said they had been asked not to give any further information but confirmed that the director was stable and sleeping. Mani Ratnam’s family, too, was unwilling to divulge any details.

Ratnam’s recent Tamil film, OK Kanmani (O Kadhal Kanmani) has been doing wonders at the box office and collected over Rs 14 crore in just four days of its release of April 15.

“The family doesn’t want information about his medical condition to be made public so we are not authorised to share any details,” said a hospital authority.

The film director had survived a heart attack in 2004 when he was filming the multi-starrer bi-lingual Yuva.

Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam suffered a heart attack in Srinagar where he was on a holiday with his close friends. The 58-year-old is known for films such as Roja and Bombay.

Ratnam was playing golf at the Royal Spring Golf Course in Srinagar around 1 pm on Sunday when he complained of chest-pain and was immediately rushed to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, about 7 km away from the state’s capital.

A source familiar with the development told Mirror that the director stayed at the hospital for the night before being moved to Delhi early morning on Monday, where he’s now recovering.

“He will now be moved to a multi-speciality hospital in Chennai,” the source said. The filmmaker’s Ok Kamnani recently released in theatres to much critical acclaim. He has had a history of heart-related complications.

  45. Utkal:

Every ten years, film journal Sight and Sound conducts a worldwide survey of film critics to decide which films are considered the best ever made. Started in 1952, the poll is now widely regarded as the most important and respected out there.

And the critical consensus for a long time was that Orson Welles’ maverick masterpiece Citizen Kane is the best of the best. It topped the list for five decades from 1962 until 2002. Then in 2012, perhaps out of Kane fatigue, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo muscled its way to the top.

That’s what the critics think. But what about the filmmakers?

Beginning in 1992, Sight and Sound started to poll famed directors about their opinions. People like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Mike Leigh and Michael Mann. So what is the best movie ever made according to 358 directors polled in 2012? Kane? Vertigo? Perhaps Jean Renoir’s brilliant Rules of the Game, the only movie to appear in the top ten for all seven critics polls? No.

    Tokyo_Monogatari_1953

Instead, the top prize goes to Yasujiro Ozu’s Tokyo Story.

It’s a surprising, an enlightened, choice. Ozu’s work is miles away from the flash of Kane and the psychosexual weirdness of Vertigo. Tokyo Story is a gentle, nuanced portrait of a family whose bonds are slowly, inexorably being frayed by the demands of modernization. The movie’s emotional power is restrained and cumulative; by the final credits you’ll be overwhelmed both with a Buddhist sense of the impermanence of all things and a strong urge to call your mother.

But perhaps the reason filmmakers picked Tokyo Story of all the other cinematic masterpieces out there is because of Ozu’s unique approach to film. Since the days of D. W. Griffith, almost every filmmaker under the sun, even cinematic rebels like Jean-Luc Godard, followed some basic conventions of the form like continuity editing, the 180-degree rule and matching eyelines. Ozu discarded all of that. Instead, he constructed a highly idiosyncratic cinematic language revolving around match cuts and rigorously composed shots. His film form was radical but his stories were universal. That is the paradox of Ozu. You can see the trailer of the movie above.

Citizen Kane does make number two on the list but the film is tied with another formally rigorous masterpiece – Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Next on the list is perhaps the best movie ever about making a movie – Federico Fellini’s 8 ½. And Ozu’s film might be number one, but Francis Ford Coppola is the only filmmaker to have two movies on the list – The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. And that’s no mean feat.

You can see the full list below:

    1. Tokyo Story – Yasujiro Ozu (1953)
    = 2. 2001: A Space Odyssey – Stanley Kubrick (1968)
    = 2. Citizen Kane – Orson Welles (1941)
    4. 8 ½ – Federico Fellini (1963)
    5. Taxi Driver – Martin Scorsese (1976)
    6. Apocalypse Now – Francis Ford Coppola (1979)
    = 7. The Godfather – Francis Ford Coppola (1972)
    = 7. Vertigo – Alfred Hitchcock (1958)
    9. Mirror – Andrei Tarkovsky (1974)
    10. Bicycle Thieves – Vittorio De Sica (1949)
