    • Saw it on youtube, man, this trailer has a serious Woody Allen hangover (I mean the late Woody Allen, he who makes farces set in Europe)…except, unlike Woody, the makers of this film don’t seem to realize they’ve made a farce…

        • Im going to give the Akhtars a little credit here. I’m pretty sure they’re trying to skewer the ‘what will people think?’ vapidity of the industrialist class. This film looks a lot snarkier and more self aware than ZNMD, which really seemed to think that it was wrestling with some great metaphysical dilemmas. I’m (trepidatiously) looking forward to this one.

        • To be fair one shouldn’t club the two together. DCH is still infinitely superior to anything Zoya Akhtar has made. Even Lakshya I think was far superior to her work, even if it had a conformist second half. But even in other formal ways Farhan is far superior. Unfortunately he stunted his career with the Don films and looks like he just wants to be an actor now.

          Like

        • Hmm… Zoya hasn’t created anything remotely as iconic as DCH, but she did write Talaash and direct LBC, both of which I loved. Even ZNMD, for all the vapidity of it’s scripting, was a masterfully directed film. And on the flip side, I think Farhan’s Dons are more dire than anything she has made.

I don’t think Farhan is too serious about his acting career; he only seems interested in indulging his every fantasy to be ‘cool’, whether that is by making desi bond films or playing hipster characters or singing rock songs (not that there is anything wrong with this; it just means he’ll probably never realise his full creative potential as a director).

I agree with the last bit of your comment, but I do think Farhan is quit serious about his acting career. If acting was just about some sort of wish fulfilment for him, he wouldn’t have done something like Milkha (which really worked for him both commercially and critically). He is also doing Wazir, not the most cool/multiplex-oriented film in town..I suspect it will have a strong political.

And while I didn’t like his Don films, his craft was visible even there especially in some of the earlier sequences of the first film…I really liked the Don’s lair for instance.

BTW I don’t think something like Rock On can be dismissed offhand. I actually think it’s a better film than ZNMD or atleast far less pretentious…there was a genuine angst in that film.

        • I’m not saying he is incapable of good acting, but I think the desire for him is to try out as many different careers as possible rather than focus on becoming the best in one career path, which is a perfectly acceptable ambition to have IMO. As for BMB, it might not be as multiplex oriented as ZNMD/ DCH but it was still a far more airbrushed biopic than say, Paan Singh Tomar. Again, nothing particularly wrong with this, but I think superstar athlete is as much fantasy fulfilment as any of his other characters.

I do think that Zoya’s directorial chops in ZNMD were far superior to those on display in Rock On! or Don, even if her scripting was utterly vapid. There were some really artful and visually evocative sequences in that film. And she was involved in writing Talaash so she can’t be as blissfully insular as ZNMD makes her seem.

I agree that this wasn’t like Paan Singh Tomar at all (I hardly even liked Milkha), but it was a genuine film . But Farhan’s persona hardly makes him “legible” for a Dhulia film. I hardly think he is some fine acting talent, but I like his choices of films. I mean even within those multiplex films, he has gone for some sort of sensible projects (compare his films with someone like Imran Khan). Let’s have a look at his filmography as an actor- LBC, Rock On, Kartik Calling Kartik, ZNMD, Shaadi Ke SIde Effects, BMB. And now he has Wazir and DDD. Is there anything special he has done? No. But all them are fairly decent, enjoyable films (atleast at a basic narrative level). In other words his films don’t insult my intelligence and sensibilities. And I can’t say the same about most of the other peers of his. And I think Wazir makes it clear that he is not just into the DDD kinda deal (even if, from the teaser, he doesn’t seem to be the best fit for that part).

I completely agree with your last para. That being said, while ZNMD might be a better “directed” film than Rock On, I still Rock On is the more genuine film. Just like it far more. LBC of course is better than most of Farhan’s films including Rock On. On your last line, I think you are right…I recall watching Zoya’s interview for The Big Indian Picture website where she mentioned that Salaam Bombay was the film which made her think about cinema in a serious sense.

        • “I think superstar athlete is as much fantasy fulfilment as any of his other characters. “-

This is true to an extent. However what makes BMB (and Milkha himself) different from just another sports film is the entire Partition (and the horrors of it) angle.

        • I can’t disagree with your assessment of Farhan as an actor. I actually enjoy his performances; he has impish charisma, great comic timing and just happens to be a very attractive man. What I meant was that I don’t think he’s ever going to be a truly noteworthy director (or actor) because I don’t think he is pursuing any one path with single-minded seriousness.

        • On Zoya Akhtar (“the director”) I will say that she is a poorer version of Anjali Menon (“the director”). What I really liked about Anjali Menon though that she shows in Ustad Hotel (which she scripted) that her world-view is not limited to the Bangalore Days universe- there is a scene in that film where a man is shown eating faeces in order to fight hunger…she didn’t need to write that scene especially in a film catering a young Malayali demographic (and which had a young star, it was Dulquer’s second film), but she did. And that scene has stayed with me.

        • personally I think and without this reflecting on anyone here that in a sense it’s a sign of Bollywood’s impoverishment that we even have to discuss Zoya Akhtar to any degree. The idea that one has to argue ‘against’ her films (at least ZNMD and the current one) ought not to be even necessary! And then when you couple it with the fact that a case for Dil Se still has to be made not to mention other Ratnam films or the idea that Imtiaz Ali is some kind of auteur it’s further evidence of everything that is deeply problematic about Bollywood. This industry has been ‘over’ for quite sometime now. What we have is mostly designer cinema that gets celebrated by folks or the interesting film (in any sense) on the truly exceptional day. This lack of rootedness in any meaningful sense might make it a perfect fit for ‘globalization’ but that’s a different debate. So again I’ll say this as bluntly as possible. From my perspective 99% of Bollywood in any given year can safely be ignored!

        • IMO Anjali Menon and Zoya Akhtar are completely different film makers, with the only commonality being that they make films with a contemporary sensibility. And they operate in very different industries as well, so you can’t really compare them. Anjali is probably one of my favourite Indian filmmakers today (not necessarily one of the best, but one of those whose films I find most enjoyable).

        • Satyam- I love Dil Se. It’s one of the most viscerally beautiful films I’ve seen and obviously not comparable to any of the works being discussed here. I don’t think anybody is under the delusion that ZNMD, DDD or Rock On! are canonical or even important films. But even amongst the lighter cinematic trifles there are varying degrees of good and bad, right?

I do agree with your larger point though. Even within popular Hollywood entertainment, there are plenty of films (especially of the sci-fi and superhero persuasion) that manage to connect with, and reflect upon, the larger American socio-political fabric in a way that renders them more substantial than any multiplex film could hope to be.

          Like

        • I do like Rock On. It’s definitely among the better films within that larger genre. To be honest I didn’t mind ZNMD either, purely as a watch. It’s just the exaggerated response this sort of film gets that’s annoying. Incidentally I wasn’t thinking of you with that Dil Se remark or anyone else necessarily. It’s just the larger culture in Bombay that frames things a certain way.

        • I get your “working in different industry” point (though I think the new-age Malayali films could be compared to the contemporary multiplex cinema of Bollywood; the former is also better in certain regards), but I do think ZNMD and Bangalore Days can be compared. And while it’s not a Zoya Akhtar film, I think something like Wake Up Sid can be compared to Ustad Hotel, (I (I am using this example because for me Ayan Mukherjee and Zoya Akhtar pretty much belong to the same club). Also while the “different industries” point hold, don’t you think that it also gives a free pass to poorer filmmakers and poorer films. For example, just because 99% Tamil directors doesn’t know how to even make a passable romantic film, should we start celebrating one half-decent (or even good) rom-com from that industry as some sort of achievement in filmmaking. If there is a genuine effort at some level, then it’s fine to give them some leeway. not otherwise IMO.

Incidentally not sure if you have seen it, but think this is a film you will like a lot, I really, really enjoyed it (the trailer is with subs BTW)-

This looks quite interesting. How and why? First off, it looks like no other film one has seen till now…except maybe ZNMD. I like that kind of auteur signature in films. Two: it is clear the director know3s the people she is showing on screen. Three: It’s great see a family film, with a different kind of family – different from Raj Khosla’s Do Raaste, Sooraj Barjatya’s HAHK or Karan Johar’s K3G. Three: It is very well acted. I am sure the exchanges between Anil and Ranvir is going to be the highlight. And yes, Ranvir is going to reach a new high with this film. ( But yes, I would have preferred Katrina to Priyanka, her understated performance added a lot to ZNMD.) And four: It’s very witty. I have played it 5 times back to back and did not tire of it. So it has passed my ‘ musicality’ test. ( And one more thing: Those who say it is about the super-rich, how would they feel if I said about a film like Nishant or Pithamagan, Oh, it’s a film about the dirt poor! )

The seasoned Revathy and the one-film-old Sayani Gupta, the two women who bear witness to Laila’s struggles to find her footing in life, provide perfect foils to the central performance.

I understand fanatics of the Khans/HR/Ranbir/Akshay but for Ranveer Singh and Farhan Akhtar??

Sooraj Ki Bahon Mein was at the end of ZNMD and was a fine song/video. It in fact continued the story of the movie.

And now that these people have more money, all they’re doing is ripping off Hollywood. Kashyap, Banerjee, Raghavan, Navdeep Singh, Zoya Akhtar- all of them can be accused of this.

  22. Whispers in the industry suggest that Hrithik Roshan has played a cameo in Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, which is due for release in June.
Says a source, “Hrithik shares a great rapport with Zoya and has even admitted that he can never say ‘no’ to her. So, when she approached him for a special appearance in her film, he happily obliged.”

The actor, who was part of Zoya’s previous projects like ‘Luck By Chance’ (2009) and ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ (2011), had recently shared Dil Dhadakne Do’s trailer on his microblogging account saying: “Frankly I’m just jealous of every actor that gets to work with her! Zoya’s dil dhadakne do! Have u seen it yet? (sic).”

The movie is a comedy drama themed around a dysfunctional Punjabi family on a cruise trip.

A source close to the project confirms the buzz, stating: “Hrithik enters the film at a crucial juncture, and although his role is small, it’s quite effective.”

    Zoya was unavailable for comment.

Or rather I wouldn’t be surprised if this one doesn’t find its target. ZNMD was not a masterpiece but was certainly entertaining. The trailers here don’t give me that vibe. An uska’ character is the only one that offers some hope and to a degree Farhaan’s.

        • I think the reason ZNMD did so well was because it portrayed a much more authentic version of aspirational European lifestyle than the usual skyscraper vistas and trashy clubbing scenes that dominate Bollywood depictions of the West. The relaxed pace of life in Southern Europe, the warm culture, the festivals, scenery, vintage cars, tasteful resort clothing – it was a persuasive, and cohesive portrayal that sold a very specific type of dream lifestyle.

On the other hand, this film doesn’t seem to have any semblance of a context and the trailers haphazardly combine very different ideas of glamour from different cultures and eras.

        • Also, the protagonists in ZNMD inspite of their first world problems connected and story telling even if superficial was sincere.
Here, it seems like the movie can’t make up its mind if it wants to be a parody a romcom or a social satire. And,Zoya seems to have grown cocky. She seems to think that as long as she has good looking actors in the trappings of a glitzy billionaire life style, multiplexes and Utkaldas are going to lap it up.
          I don’t think so.
