ABCD 2 had the highest first week collection of the year as it grossed 71.75 crore nett aporx. It beat the previous best of Tanu Weds Manu Returns which had grossed 69 crore nett. The film did start to fall midweek but still the week is very good due to the strong opening.
The film is being driven by Maharashtra belt and this area tends to fall faster than most other circuits so it could be the reason for the falls. Mumbai curcuit has grossed a huge 26.75 crore nett in week one while Delhi/UP is 12 crore nett.
The film has an open window in front of it and should hit 100 crore nett it’s third weekend and go on to business if 110 crore nett plus.
The first look of Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Killing Veerappan’ is out! The ace filmmaker has been floored by the dedication of debutant Sandeep Bharadwaj, who plays the dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, in his upcoming multilingual film –
“Never in my career have I seen a more dedicated and a more methodical actor than Sandeep. It’s not an exaggeration to say that he actually started thinking like Veerappan,” Varma said in a statement. “The biggest compliment a unit member gave Sandeep was by warning him that he could be killed because people might mistake him for real Veerappan,” he said.
Sandeep, who looks incredibly close to real Veerappan in the stills of the movie, is a student of the National School of Drama.
Kannada superstar Shivrajkumar plays the lead role, while actresses Parul Yadav and Yanga Shetty will be seen essaying important roles.

I was born in Budhana, a non-descript town in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district.
I grew up amongst nine siblings and my parents put in their sweat and blood to ensure that we were all educated.
As a child, I harboured dreams to become an actor, but it was important, and perhaps even realistic, that I have a sound educational background.
After graduating in science, I moved to Baroda where I worked as a chief chemist in a petro chemical company for nearly 18 months.
But acting was always at the back of my mind, so I left for Delhi one fine day and ended up staying there for close to seven years. I joined the National School of Drama and underwent training for three years… in the remaining four years, I made a living by taking up odd assignments — an advertisement here or a campaign there. I was part of an amateur theatre group initially for which I would be paid a pittance. I would do four shows a day and get R100 per show. But work was erratic and it was tough to manage my daily expenses. So, I also had to take up a job as a watchman in Noida to make both ends meet.
With the little money that I had saved, I moved to Mumbai in 2000 and thus began another chapter of struggle — this time, in tinseltown. For almost three years, I put up in Goregaon with five or six friends from NSD. My daily routine was to take bus number 79 which went to Dadar and nearby areas and then hop into bus number 225 to appear for film auditions in Yari Road.
I would hang out with my friends at Adarsh Nagar — it was considered a shady place then, but we went there as the food was cheap. I would, at times, not even pay for food and the hotel owner knew that whenever I would find work, I would pay up. There were also days when I went to bed hungry. At times, I would sit at a bar with friends and drink. For several years, whoever in my friend circle got work would feed the rest of us. So if we found out one of us has got work, we would stay at his place for days together till he could no longer feed us. But, in the meanwhile, we would have hunted down someone else to stay and share food with.
That was the place where we exchanged information about various auditions going on in the city. We would go to telephone booths, stand in a queue and call up directors one after the other. I always wanted to work with Saeed Mirza and one day when I called him, I asked him for him because I thought his assistant had answered the call. I was so shocked that it was him on the other side that the receiver slipped from my hand and I couldn’t muster the courage to speak to him or call back again.
Once a friend of mine was supposed to audition for Sarfarosh (1999), but he went elsewhere. So this bunch of people who came looking for him caught hold of me and asked me to audition instead. I went ahead and got selected… That’s how I got my first break, although it was a blink-and-miss role. After that I worked as a junior artiste in some ads, did some B and C grade films too.
I was staying with a friend at Four Bungalows when I heard that a television commercial was being shot in Film City. This person who gave us the information said he had spoken to the makers on our behalf and we rushed there. We had to walk all the way because we didn’t have the money to buy a bus ticket. The ad required that a group of people sit in a bus and do random actions. But I chose to sleep inside because I didn’t want to get noticed. After all, I was a theatre actor and had worked as a junior artiste in ads. In the evening, when we had to get our payment, one of the ad coordinators asked for our card which we didn’t have. So, instead of R2000, he gave us R1000 and kept the remaining money with him. My friend and I went to the bar in Adarsh Nagar, ate and drank to our hearts’ content as we had not had proper food that month.
While leaving the bar, we both had only R200 each in our pockets and the next day, we were back to our struggle.
My younger brother, Shamas, moved to Mumbai a few years after me and began working in television. I was still a struggler and we stayed together. So even if one of us was out of work, the other one would pay the bills.
A few months after Sarfarosh, I met Anurag Kashyap as he was shooting for Shool. He asked me if I had done some work earlier. I mentioned Sarfarosh and when I told him about the role, a faint smile played on his lips. He had felt that my role in Sarfarosh was not played by an actor, but a real person. That was a big compliment for me and he signed me for Black Friday. After that I did New York and offers gradually started pouring in. I was able to shift to Malad, but life still wasn’t all that cushy. I had to change houses whenever the rent went up. I moved to a place in Andheri and when I bagged Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), I started staying in Yari Road and have been there ever since.
When I look back at those days, many sad memories come hurtling back. It was a harsh, hard struggle. I pray to god that no one should see such bad times; I wouldn’t want to relive those painful days. Now although I am not struggling for survival, there are bigger challenges at hand. Then I was alone and now I have a family to support. But what keeps me going is my passion for acting and everyday, I strive to better my art. Thankfully, I am now at a position where I get to choose scripts and roles, but a blanket of insecurity also envelopes me. What if I sign the wrong film? The struggle will never end.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is an actor who has carved a niche for himself without a godfather in the industry.
Lalit Modi has the entire country’s politicians and who’s-who in his deep pockets at the moment 🙂 and the man knows how to make use of such situations 🙂 very soon we will have Indian Political Leaque out of nowhere 😉
If there’s something you need to watch this weekend, I will strongly, strongly recommend Inside Out. Another gem added to the list of Disney/Pixar classics. This wonderful little gem is crazily imaginative, heartbreakingly poignant and hilarious in equal measure.
Hats off to the Pixar guys. With the exception of the Cars movies and, to an extent, A Bug’s Life, they’ve never disappointed me. And Inside Out reaffirms my faith that these guys make the best animation movies in the US.
i don’t think so, it was hardly funny with same old Pixar’s stereotypical characters and predictable story. Though, plot was unique and exceptional, and that’s what made this movie most awaited. But, it resulted in more disappointment.
i think overall as a movie it was average, it tried to be social message which was never delivered.
No where close to monsters university which was Pixar’s last best, just little better than Brave.

this is a rather superficial and often silly discussion but Kunal Kapoor says something interesting at one point when he claims that there are many 100 or 150 crore grossers that have lost money and that everyone in the industry knows what those films are. But this is never the sort of picture you get from the trade and media.
No Indian-American can speak of a political career so full of accomplishments as Bobby Jindal — two-term governor, two-time congressman and several senior political appointments.
And he is now running for president, marking a major milestone for a minority Indian-American community seeking to leverage its fabulous wealth for political power in recent years.
Anyone else might have found himself spoilt by a proud community. Not Jindal. His White House run announcement was greeted with a stream of derisive tweets and racial jokes instead.
Racially charged tweets hash-tagged #BobbyJindalIsSoWhite began trending within seconds of his speech and ran through the night, the next day and the day after the next day.
A community seemingly wounded by Jindal’s explicitly and repeatedly asserted desire to go beyond hyphenations, and not be identified as Indian-American, was exacting its revenge.
The rupture between him, the community’s most successful and now powerful politician yet, and the community seemed complete and final, in a Game-of-throne like flameout.
“I was stunned by the racial overtone of the reaction,” said a Republican operative who has known Jindal for a long time. He spoke on condition of anonymity so he could speak freely.
To be fair, Jindal, a Republican, never could count on the Indian American community, which is mostly Democratic, and gave up on it after early unhappy experiences.
His religion, catholic christian, may have played a role too.
Conspiracists in the Hindu-majority Indian-American fold believe Jindal gave up his birth religion that he inherited from his parents, Hinduism, to further his political career.
That’s a stretch, according to someone who had known him.
“His conversion process started in school when he was first introduced to Christianity and the Bible,” he said, “when politics couldn’t have been on the horizon for him.” Jindal has been on record about being first exposed to Christianity while in high school, and then, impressed, reading the bible in the closet so his parents couldn’t find out.
He converted while in college, way before he got into politics.
But the conversion charge has kind of stuck. Most Indian-Americans are, one, Hindus, and, two, believe it’s impossible for any of them to make it in US politics without converting.
Republican governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley is of Indian descent — her parents are Sikhs from Punjab, and have retained their religion, but she is christian, and is married to one.
Democratic House or Representatives member Ami Berra is also of India descent — parents are Hindus from Gujarat, and remain so — but he converted to Unitarian Christianity.
Neither of them has been challenged as much about their religion as Jindal, mostly because, commentators and observers said, they have been wise about their ties to the community.
Berra is co-chairman of the India caucus of the House of Representatives, a body of lawmakers brought together by their Indian-American constituents and voters.
And Haley puts in regular appearances at events that are important to the community — such as the Madison Square Garden reception for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Jindal stayed away. And now reasons were sought or offered.
“Nikki and Ami have indeed been smarter about their outreach to the community,” said an Indian American observer, adding, “Bobby has not helped his own case, yes.”
But, as Shekar Narasimhan, a Democrat, said, Jindal probably does not need the community. He has not pitched any one on either side of the political. Not yet, at least.
And Indian-Americans who worked once for him on his earlier campaigns, said they gave up waiting to be asked a long time ago — since he opted for local advisors.
Jindal first ran for public office — governor of Louisiana — in 2003. A few Indian-Americans who had known him worked for him, despite party affiliations, and ideology.
“It was important for me to be able to prove to the country that an Indian American could administer ably and represent everyone,” said an operative who worked with Jindal.
Jindal was not just a Republican candidate. He was a flag bearer for a community which was yearning to be recognized for its political power, and not just the clout of its cheques.
Jindal chose to go with his own instincts, na local advisers.
And then, finally, it is just politics.
“Bobby is a right-wing conservative Republican, and most Indian Americans aren’t, so there are a lot of mixed feelings about him,” said Toby Chaudhuri, a political strategist.
Subhash Kapoor’s Guddu Rangeela is a fun film about two bumbling small-time crooks, played by Amit Sadh and Arshad Warsi, who are playing characters of Guddu and Rangeela, respectively.
In the film, Guddu and Rangeela are two small-time orchestra singers based in Haryana, who sing a song ‘Mata Ka Email’ that has the following lyrics — ‘Kal Raat Mata Ka Mujhe Email Aaya Hai, Mata Ne Mujhko Facebook Pe Bulaya Hai’. We have learnt that this song has allegedly upset the sentiments of a few religious organisations across North and West parts of the country. As a result, the makers have received several emails and threatening calls asking them to remove this song from the film. The makers have been threatened that if they don’t remove the song, they would risk facing dire consequences, including disruptions at the theatres. Recently in Ludhiana, there were demonstrations held demanding a ban to be put on the film and posters of the film were put on fire.
Now in its third weekend, “Jurassic World” sold an estimated $54.2 million in tickets, for a new domestic total of $500.1 million, according to Rentrak, which compiles box office data. Worldwide, the dinosaur movie has now taken in an astounding $1.2 billion, and it has not even opened yet in Japan, a major market. Pixar’s “Inside Out” (Walt Disney Studios) was a strong second, with ticket sales of about $52.1 million, for a two-week domestic total of $184.9 million. Opening beside “Ted 2,” the PG-rated “Max” (Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) took in $12.2 million, on the high end of expectations. “Max,” about a military working dog who returns to civilian life, cost about $20 million to make.
Saw the dinosaurs also and I thought it was okay but some of the scenes involving the actress were downright dumb. I thought such scenes are reserved for desi TV serials. Irfan khan’s role was decent.
ABCD 2 grossed 16 crore nett in its second weekend to take its business to around 87.50 crore nett. It was the second highest second weekend of the year after after Tanu Weds Manu Returns and better than films like Gabbar Is Back, Baby and Dil Dhadakne Do. If compared with some of the films last year then it is comparable to a 2 States and better Singham Returns , Bang Bang, Jai Ho and Ek Villain
The film is still being driven by Mumbai circuit where the business has surpassed 33 crore nett and is closing on in the 37 crore nett (5 weeks) of Tanu Weds Manu Returns fast.
ABCD 2 is also likely to cross the business of Tanu Weds Manu Returns in CP Berar and Nizam / Andhra. Basically any circuit which has cities from Maharashtra will be number one for the year.
Dil Dhadakne went to 75 crore nett in its fourth weekend. The film did drop after the first week but has slowly crept to the 75 crore nett mark as the film has stayed in the multiplexes of the big metros like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. The fourth weekend added around 1 crore nett.
Tany Weds Manu Returns stands at 146.50 crore nett after its fifth weekend. It will be the 11th highest grossing film of all time. The distributor share of the film will be 66-67 crore which is the 15th highest ever.
Piku has finished its business on 78.50 crore nett and is the biggest grosser of the year in West Bengal with business close to 7 crore nett. The 5% ratio circuit is almost double for this film.
Shraddha and Kriti are emerging as the new leads. To replace the overused ones. It seems Kriti may be the lead for Sultan and Shraddha for Rock on 2. After a dance movie like ABCD 2, a musical one like Rock on 2 for Shraddha. And she also starred in Ashiqui 2. All sequels. Can we call her Shraddha 2?

Offence, it is said, is the best form of defence, and that’s what seems to be playing out in this so-called ‘clash’ of two superstar films scheduled for release on the same date next year.
On the face of it, the obvious victim is the film that had announced its release date first and one would feel that with the much-coveted date taken, the production house behind the second film should have refrained from choosing the same date. However, sources tell us, the truth is not as simple as that.
Apparently, much before the first film made its announcement, the producers of both films had already had a phone conversation wherein, among other things, the likely release dates of their major films was also discussed. The head honcho at the production house behind the second film shared in confidence that he was looking to block the big date but wasn’t going to announce the same till the time was right. The big producer (and he is as big as they get!) asked the partner-producer of the first film whether they had locked their date and was told that no decision had been taken yet. That being so, the solo producer went ahead with planning his production so as to be ready by the earmarked date.
Imagine the producer’s surprise, therefore, when subsequently, the other production house publicly announced the very release date that had been discussed during their phone call. Hurt aside, cast and crew dates as also shooting schedules had already been locked and so this producer decided to stick to his guns and also announced the same date recently.
That set the cat among the pigeons and the trade is agog with various theories about what the hidden agendas are. On their part, the production house that announced the date first has quickly assumed the role of martyr and is making hurt noises about how the spirit of fraternity and cooperation is dead in the industry. Obviously, there is no mention of the phone call that preceded their announcement! Worse, some are also trying to present this as a personal battle between the two superstars in the respective films when neither of them was involved in the discussions nor the decisions, given that their primary role is to perform and both films have experienced producers backing them.
Of course, with more than a year to go for the contentious release date, one would assume that the last has not been heard on this kissa clash ka. Hmmm….given all this drama, intrigue and action, maybe some enterprising producer can make a film on these behind-the-scenes twists and turns… and also release this third film on the same date!
This is truly the height of arrogance for both production houses. This is clearly an ego thing now…and probably so much so that if either step down it will be seen as an act of defeat rather than good common sense.
To be honest, if Dangal was that third movie, I am pretty sure Excel and YRF would shit their load. Least fans would finally get to see all 3 on the same friday!
Btw, Raees would SRK’s 3rd release in the gap of 7-8 months. Last time it happened was in 2004(MHN, VZ and Swades). Same style of movies sequence. Full on commercial Home Production, Dilwale = MHN, YRF Fan = VZ(but Fan is still offbeat to an extent esp compared to VZ) and Raees = Swades (kinda offbeat).
that would be a real battle though the Salman fans would say that Sultan was an offbeat film because Salman was trying to play an adult, SRK fans would say Raees was an art film because it wasn’t a Yashraj love story, Aamir fans would just enjoy a good movie and predictably a success would emerge!
I really hope the release dates of these two hold till the end as two big movies coming together is a good thing and the hype of ‘clash’ etc can be neutralized and limited. It’s definitely good for box office
earnings and combined money flowing in.
This is also good for the audience in the long run as they will get to see better movies and finally ‘content’ will actually turn out to be the real king because initial cashing of the weekend will no more be in play and a longer inning at the box office will be required to be profitable.
Lastly all these talks of bullying etc will fly out of the window and people will stop chirping about camps /factions/ wings/ groups/ lobby/
bloc/ coterie/ sect etc.
I think this clash theory is so going down, just having multiple releases that too during holidays is not really a clash. Christmas can easily accommodate multiple films as there are lot of holidays in that 10 days period and watching 2 movies is no big deal for movie lovers. BM and Dilwale releasing together is just fine as well. Samething with Eid and Diwali. Records might not break but eventually well made movies will be success.
that’s a fair point except that when films are designed to just get to the biggest numbers and when these same numbers are hyped to death everywhere and become the ‘only’ thing that matters the clash then becomes something significant. I think that when films appeal to completely different demographics and when the production scale is not comparable either a clash is fine. TZP v Welcome for example. However the key thing here is that the smaller film must get proper screens. often the bigger productions drown out everything else irrespective of how well or not they’re doing. This then is a problem because people might be willing to watch the smaller release but not find convenient showtimes in many cases. A film with fantastic WOM can always do well but anything less and things become tricky. In any case the bar is high for any film that doesn’t look like an absolute blockbuster sort of deal that most people show up for even when the reviews are not great. At least in the initial phase. With a smaller film and despite stars it’s hard to clear that hurdle without strong WOM (another reason why Aamir is in a singular position.. when he’s attached to a project there’s no other bar to clear.. so whether people like films about wrestlers or not they’ll give Aamir the benefit of the doubt.. with every other star this has to be earned.. the trailers have to excite or whatever..). To sum up it’s easier to distract a potential audience from a smaller film, hard to do this with a big one which is literally all over the place.
Leaving all this aside though I do agree with your point. Competition is rarely the difference between a film succeeding or failing but the gross can nonetheless be significantly affected. on the Sultan-Raees thing if the date holds it works more for SRK in my view. Because the hype helps the smaller film more. Also by the end SRK will be peddling this as a small and/or offbeat film and will keep pulling himself out of the competition as he otherwise literally competes and becomes part of that high profile clash. Unless his film absolutely fails it’s a win-win for him. Specially if he has Dilwale in the bank.
Out of all the 3 films, SRK is least confident about FAN. He has said, he liked the script very much and complete unique script but he don’t know if it’ll be huge money spinner or big hit.
but if handled right it’s easily the most interesting film of the ones he’s currently doing. On Raees he doesn’t seem to be able to get the gangster aspirations out of his system!
This is not a good thing at all. This is not a Welcome vs TZP where two movies are having different release strategies. This is a clash of 2 superstars who will both want the maximum screens. There are only around 3000 decent screens in India. Adding all B screens it is around 4000. Now a big release will want to maximize and typically a Bhajrangi Baijaan or Dilwaale will release in 3500 screens. So there is no way both movies will get enough screens here to make any records worthwhile. The only movie which will win here is the one with content and even that movies gross will be severely restricted. An immediate example is Jilla vs Veeram in TN last Pongal and both movies were severely affected in the end.
The movie which will suffer here is Raees which doesn’t look an out an out entertainer atleast now. But you never know if all this arty thing is just an eyewash as you never know what you can get with SRK
The first trailor of both these movies need to be spot on. If Sultan gives a Bodyguard kind of vibe and Raees gives a classy vibe, SRK will thump Salman with his multiplex pull. Where SRK will suffer most is in the single screens. Overseas and Multiplex are still his forte’s (relatively).
You make valid points Krish and reading between the lines to what SRK is saying today, I doubt this clash is taking place plus YRF at the other end of the equation will tilt it in their favor and srk will make Excel back off. Further SRK does not have anything till year end next year after this , so he will not rush for this release as next year Eid is earlier and on July 03rd/04th itself so if Fan releases in between Dilwale and Raees it will be an overkill of srk releases.
May be at the moment they will indulge in milking this clash hype and this will also assist Salman remain talking point nearing release of his BB as he is seems to be going low profile with publicity due to his court case verdict and some of the negativity surrounding his bail.
This new clash also helps srk to effectively neutralizes the negativity he was earning due to pushing Bajirao Mastani out to next year. So the bully tag gets efficaciously removed with the taalk of this new clash.

Its actually that good that this so called ‘clash’ is happening after their friendship and not earlier. Even during Jaaneman and Don, they were friends. At least there won’t be bitter wars. If they were not on talking terms, it would have turned ugly.
Sometime I feel all this is planned to further prolong the hype and their inning at the box office as hardly any filmmaker is doing path breaking work in between….so the gossip adds to the value.
When asked King Khan what he feels about the buzz around this clash.
King Khan, with his trademark lopsided dimpled smile, said,”There are 365 days in a year which amounts to 54 Fridays. And there are bound to be clashes. The business will get divided, but Salman and I are such good friends that we have decided on doing everything together including releasing the movies together.”
Since both are towards the fag end of their blockbuster career its not going to make much difference to these two stars. But this kind of clash/simultaneous release can be a good precedent to incoming crowd of stars. The only thing to be looked here is reaction of yrf and their equations with srk which will come under some kind of stress if not already….
YRF has from time to time used these big ticket movies with the sole purpose of cashing in on their good equations with the Khans and to stay afloat in between those Kill Dill and DBB. They would again look to maximize their profits and Raees though with Dholakia will at least be some sort of distraction to the earnings if content is not there.
The issue is for Dangal and novelty is going to be missing and if by chance Salman nails the performance as a wrestler going by the prep and tweet here

these days you can extend things quite a bit. Things have become very Hollywoodized in India and to the point where you can keep associating yourself with certain kinds of projects as long as you have minimal standing as a ‘senior’ star, filling in the demographic gaps with younger stars, and in between doing more reasonable (smaller) projects that have a fair chance of succeeding. It’s not an easy combination to pull off but it can be done. SRK has never quite had the script sense for this stuff but he certainly has survivor instincts. for instance he could certain do a couple more with Shetty with a similar combo. Does this result in loss of prestige all the while? Absolutely. But if you’re already a senior star you are less bothered about this. It’s not as if you have too many options. What you want to do is the prestige film one way or the other (big commercial film or whatever) that keeps you in some sort of running.
Also note that this generation of stars is greatly helped by younger generations that are also not interested in business-as-usual. They too want the prestige films, they too want to be seen as doing different stuff. They might get better films as younger stars but it’s still about the right projects. In other words no one’s doing a Salman (barring Salman!). The gap then between a young star at his peak and an older off-peak becomes less apparent in such circumstances because the younger star too cannot generate crazy initials in genres that are less formulaic. Obviously one can only take this so far but then no star who’s on the wrong side of 50 is going to be completely unrealistic about his prospects.

I am capable of decrying Kamal Haasan’s bad performance fearlessly and supporting good ones shamelessly. So it would be unjust not to laud Ms. Gautami’s performance. She has done very well and has grown in understanding of her craft better in absentia. I think the distance and years have helped her get a vantage view. The tragedy with actors who are female and are learning on the job is this. When they fully grasp their craft it will be time for them to retire. G has beaten that tragedy, thanks to Drishyam alias Paapanasam.

Whatever the tabloids scream, the fact is …if at all someone stole the march they were my friends Mohanlal and Jeetu. They stole the march from right under the Mahanadhi writer’s nose. Mr. Devgn and I are not even marching through the same market places. So his goods and march stay unstolen. If at all the success of Paapanasam would fuel the success of Drishyam Hindi version. Boring filmmaking. Melodramatic storytelling. Inconsistent characterization. Uninspired, clichéd performances. The idea of watching private moments of your old parents through hidden cameras is disgusting enough, and those teary eyes make it more so. The writing is careless all over. It is not clear whether the patriarch played by Soumitra Chatterjee decides on his outlandish act because he wants his wife to be independent ( swabalambi) or because he likes solitude and wants t embark on adventures across different lands. When he comes back to his wife he says, ‘ I somehow managed to make the morning cup of tea, but couldn’t get around to making the afternoon cup, felt kind of lazy.’ What was his faithful Man Friday Ganesh doing? I thought the express purpose of taking him along was for tasks like these. The least he could do was to make two cups of tea a day. The conversation between the old couple is stilted. A line like ‘Was there love between us, or was it merely long years of habit’ is so out of place between two who we have never seen conversing in that tone. She says she had been reading one of the authors he publishes but she never told him about it lest he stop bringing his books home? Why on earth? Why should he be against her reading books? She might be too caught up with household chores to express her love, but how does he forget her birthday? He who was so in love with her from the day he saw her black and white photograph?
The resolution of marital problems of all the siblings during the fortnight’s stay in Shantiniketan is as contrived and carelessly written as the rest of the film. It is all a terrible mess and a big bore, and the laughably inappropriate use of Rabindrasangeet like ‘ Shay je maaney na maana’ and the perfunctory use of an Anupam Roy song in the credit titles ( which has become such a predictable fixture in a certain kind of Bengali films these days.) doesn’t help.

BTW there is another Bengali films (which has absolutely no dialogues) in the theatre called “Asha Jaoar Majhe” (Labour of Love) which has been getting some rave reviews (and has been a festival favourite). If you do get around to watching it, do share your your views.
Q. There is the Telugu film Bahubali which will gross more than 300 crore in South India and will also get a huge release in North so can it gross a big number like 50 crore?
Ans. 50 crore is not a big number in general terms. The film does not really hold much appeal for the Hindi markets. The big city multiplex audience will look it at as a B grade film and zero face value makes it impossible with the other center multiplexes and single screen audience.
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan’s love for their pet dogs is known to all. Recently, their pooches even made it to the newspapers. In an interaction with Dnaindia.com, Kareena said that both her dogs are the stars of Bandra. Apart from a Jack Russell with the name Elvis, she owns a pug which was gifted to them by Sonakshi Sinha, the report stated. Interestingly, the actress had named the pug after Leonardo DiCaprio! The business in Delhi/UP and East Punjab has beaten Kick, Chennai Express, Ek Tha Tiger and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The film also has a rare feat that business in Delhi/UP is better than Mumbai and this has never happened before for a film grossing over 50 crore nett.
If everything works out, Emma Watson would soon be making her Bollywood debut with the biopic on the Mid-day journalist, J Dey. Nandita Singgha, the director-producer of the film, has apparently approached London-based actress, Emma Watson for the role of the female lead in the film. While Aamir will play the lead role of the murdered crime reporter, Emma has been approached to play the role of a British journalist who breaks the news of the murder to the world. However, a source has been quoted in a Bollywoodlife.com report as saying that the two won’t have any scenes together.
(Spoiler alert: I have almost told the whole story of the film. But then you aren’t really planning to see this, are you? If you are, then I suggest you read only the first three and the last four paragraphs.)
It was to get rid of the bad taste of ‘Belasheshe’ that I sought out a Tamil film and I was lucky to have hit upon the delicious ‘ Kaaka Muttai’ ( Crow’s Egg).
Right from the first scene when we encounter the younger of the two brothers who live with their mother and grandmother (their father is in jail) peeing in his sleep and the trail of liquid spreading across the room, we know this is going to be a special film.
The two brothers call themselves ‘ Chinna Kaaka Muttai’ and ‘Periay Kaaka Muttai’ and have an adult friend Pazharasam who loiters around the railway track and helps them pick up stray pieces of coal which they sell at three rupees a kilo. Little everyday things happen. They climb up a tree , pick up some bird’s eggs and eat then raw. Their home gets a TV. Their playground is sold off and a pizza joint comes up there, inaugurated by one of their slum boys who has made it good as an actor of sorts.
There life kinds of acquires an urgency of purpose when they see an advertisement for a juicy pizza on the TV and want to taste it. Their yearning for it is whetted by their encounter with the pizza delivery boy passing through their slum who lets them smell a pizza in return for a bit of help with the direction to the delivery address. They collect a colourful flyer with a phone number for ordering and the price of Rs. 300 prominently displayed. ‘Rs.300!’ grandma exclaims and sends them with Rs. 10 instead to the vegetable shop to get some tomatoes and capsicum. It’s a delight to watch her as she goes about trying to approximate a pizza by cutting the capsicum and tomatoes into the right shapes as shown in the pizza flyer and placing them on the dosa batter on the tawa. The boys say it doesn’t smell like pizza. Grandma says how can dosa batter smell like pizza. ‘ Dosa!’
They get to a more plentiful source of railway coal and start saving money seriously. They dial the number given on the pizza flyer. ‘ What’s the address?’, the pizza guy asks. Address? Do they have one? They ask their grandma. Girinagar something, she says. That obviously won’t do. They try to go to the pizza place itself, but the security won’t let them in. Having money isn’t enough. They must dress like the kids who are allowed in. They find ways of procuring some hep clothes. But this time not only are the barred from entry, the elder one is beaten up squarely by the manager. And what is worse, their friends from the slum witness their humiliation. One of them even records it on his cell phone.
In the meanwhile their grandma dies, and they give their pizza money for her funeral. But one thing leads to another. And they end up being invited by the PizzaStop owner for a royal treat of free pizza, welcomed with band baaja bandobast and media in full attendance.
So how do they like the pizza? No big deal apparently. They kind of prefer their grandma’s dosa. They return to their home in the slum. Life goes on. And yes, the younger one has stopped his bed wetting.
The film is so outrageously funny and entertaining one does not get time to think about the injustice of all and the sad lives these slum kids live. But again, the brothers are not sad. Anything but. They are so full of life, taking every challenge with a gung ho spirit. Their enjoyment of eating the raw bird’s egg, or paddling on the slum puddle in a makeshift raft made from some plastic crates, or their pride in saving money through hard work…is so contagious.
Their performance is so natural you have to see it to believe it. And so are the performances by all the supporting cast, especially the mother played with a quite dignity showing a myriad little emotions with just a look . Her body language conveys her world weariness lit up by her warm affection for the two lively kids.
But what lifts up the film many notches higher that what the storyline suggests is the debutant director M . Manikandan’s ’s vision. His observation of life in all its detail – from the shape of the capsicum the grandma cuts for her dosa-cum-pizza to the holes in the ten rupee notes someone gives them – fills you with a love of life that triumphs over all the poverty and squalor the family lives in. (I love the scene where the mother is washing clothes, one of the brother is throwing them one by one up to the top of a tile roof where the other brother is standing to catch them and lay them on a rope to dry. The suddenly a plane flues by and the attention of the brother on the roof is drawn by it and he misses catching the item of clothing and is hit by it on his face.) You share their familial love and bonding and the sense of optimism and their sporting engagement with the business of living.
This is in a way Pather Panchali set in an urban slum, with siblings as innocent and as lovable as Durga and Apu, their story told with bouncy music and quirky humor instead of sad sitar strains and poetic visuals. But it is no less poignant for it.
Q. Both Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan have confirmed that Raees and Sultan will release next Eid so will this be the ultimate clash with the winner being the biggest star in India?
Ans. It is too far away to be confirmed. A lot of things will happen between now and next July. It can only be confirmed a few months into next year which will or films are sure to come on Eid 2017. If there is a clash there will be a winner as there is always barring very rare occasions but it does not really decide the biggest star as its not about one film.

Neeraj Ghaywan, whose directorial debut “Masaan” garnered much appreciation at the Cannes International Film Festival this year, says directors get too much credit for the success of the film.
“I will give it to the team. I have always maintained this in my life. I think the director gets too much credit for the film, but I think it is everybody’s effort and they are the one who made it possible,” Ghaywan said at the inaugural of sixth edition of Jagran Film Festival here.
The five-day film extravaganza was opened here on Wednesday by “Masaan”, which won two awards at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival earlier this year. Along with Ghaywan, stars like Sanjay Mishra, Richa Chadha, Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi were present at the screening.
The film unfolds a story of four people living in a small town — Varanasi– and how pre-set notions of society change their life and its consequences.
Ghaywan points out that shooting for the film was not a cake walk.
“There were challenges like recreating live ghats, shooting with fire, diving sequences and then the time frame, economy and budget. There were so man variables. But we all were honest to the project and we all were in it together,” he added.
Produced by Drishyam Films, Phantom Films, Macassar Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, “Masaan” is scheduled to hit Indian theatres on July 24.
This week will see a clash between Guddu Rangeela and Second Hand Husband. Both films are not looking to open well and will be dependent on word of mouth. Guddu Rangeela will have the edge due to better promotion giving it better awareness.
Second Hand Husband has better chances in East Punjab as the hero Gippy Grewal is a star in Punjabi films, infact the second biggest star in the industry. Normally his Punjabi films pick up 70-75 lakhs nett on day one in East Punjab and that is with limited business in the centres of Haryana and Himachal. Here the territory gets bigger as Hindi film so makers will probably expect more.
But its unlikely to be the case as the film is in Hindi so the language factor means you lose a size-able chunk of the audience leaving collections less than the Punjabi films. Guddu Rangeela will have better collections in all circuits barring East Punjab..Both films have a chance on word of mouth as there is no big release next week which does give them time. ABCD 2 will also challenge the new releases and over the weekend could even beat them if they don’t get any appreciation. There is also Terminator releasing which won’t be among the stronger Hollywood releases but has chances of beating the Hindi films as they are weak as far as initial goes.
“Reports say Mammootty is all set to play the lead role in veteran director Mani Ratnam’s next film. His last flick was O K Kanmani with Dulquar Salman in the lead role. Talks are on to rope in bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai. However, the reports have not been confirmed so far.
Mammootty had acted with Mani Ratnam in Dalapathy along with Rajanikanth in 1991. The director first decided to cast Mammootty in Iruvar along with Aishwarya Rai but as the actor thought the role was not suitable for him, Mohanlal replaced him.
The film would be a spy thriller like the Bourne Series. Reports said the director had met the actor and that the latter is keen in doing the project. Talks are on with a production company.
The shooting of the film is likely to begin in July 2016. Mani Ratnam is busy with the script of the film. P C Sriram is the cinematographer. As usual A R Rahman would be the music director of the film. Rahman had worked for Kandukonden Kandukonden starring Mammootty and Aishwarya Rai. The fans are eagerly waiting for the official announcement of the film.”

Jaipur: A child has died in an accident between politician Hema Malini’s Mercedes and a Maruti Alto in Rajasthan today. The BJP leader’s car was speeding, said a police official.
Another child is among four others who were in the Alto and have been hospitalised. Hema Malini is not seriously hurt.
“I am being told the Mercedes was speeding. It drove over the divider,” said senior police officer Rajinder Tyagi to NDTV from Dausa, where the accident took place, about 60 km from the state capital of Jaipur.
The actor-turned-politician, 66, was treated for minor injuries in a Jaipur hospital. Staff said she walked in unaided and received a few stitches near her nose.
Hema Malini represents Mathura in Parliament. She was headed from her constituency to Jaipur, when the accident took place.

ABCD 2 Has Highest First Week Collections Of 2015

ABCD 2 had the highest first week collection of the year as it grossed 71.75 crore nett aporx. It beat the previous best of Tanu Weds Manu Returns which had grossed 69 crore nett. The film did start to fall midweek but still the week is very good due to the strong opening.
The film is being driven by Maharashtra belt and this area tends to fall faster than most other circuits so it could be the reason for the falls. Mumbai curcuit has grossed a huge 26.75 crore nett in week one while Delhi/UP is 12 crore nett.
The film has an open window in front of it and should hit 100 crore nett it’s third weekend and go on to business if 110 crore nett plus.

The first look of Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Killing Veerappan’ is out! The ace filmmaker has been floored by the dedication of debutant Sandeep Bharadwaj, who plays the dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, in his upcoming multilingual film –
“Never in my career have I seen a more dedicated and a more methodical actor than Sandeep. It’s not an exaggeration to say that he actually started thinking like Veerappan,” Varma said in a statement. “The biggest compliment a unit member gave Sandeep was by warning him that he could be killed because people might mistake him for real Veerappan,” he said.
Sandeep, who looks incredibly close to real Veerappan in the stills of the movie, is a student of the National School of Drama.
Kannada superstar Shivrajkumar plays the lead role, while actresses Parul Yadav and Yanga Shetty will be seen essaying important roles.

How Nawazuddin’s Bollywood dream became a reality

I was born in Budhana, a non-descript town in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district.
I grew up amongst nine siblings and my parents put in their sweat and blood to ensure that we were all educated.
As a child, I harboured dreams to become an actor, but it was important, and perhaps even realistic, that I have a sound educational background.
After graduating in science, I moved to Baroda where I worked as a chief chemist in a petro chemical company for nearly 18 months.
But acting was always at the back of my mind, so I left for Delhi one fine day and ended up staying there for close to seven years. I joined the National School of Drama and underwent training for three years… in the remaining four years, I made a living by taking up odd assignments — an advertisement here or a campaign there. I was part of an amateur theatre group initially for which I would be paid a pittance. I would do four shows a day and get R100 per show. But work was erratic and it was tough to manage my daily expenses. So, I also had to take up a job as a watchman in Noida to make both ends meet.
With the little money that I had saved, I moved to Mumbai in 2000 and thus began another chapter of struggle — this time, in tinseltown. For almost three years, I put up in Goregaon with five or six friends from NSD. My daily routine was to take bus number 79 which went to Dadar and nearby areas and then hop into bus number 225 to appear for film auditions in Yari Road.
I would hang out with my friends at Adarsh Nagar — it was considered a shady place then, but we went there as the food was cheap. I would, at times, not even pay for food and the hotel owner knew that whenever I would find work, I would pay up. There were also days when I went to bed hungry. At times, I would sit at a bar with friends and drink. For several years, whoever in my friend circle got work would feed the rest of us. So if we found out one of us has got work, we would stay at his place for days together till he could no longer feed us. But, in the meanwhile, we would have hunted down someone else to stay and share food with.
That was the place where we exchanged information about various auditions going on in the city. We would go to telephone booths, stand in a queue and call up directors one after the other. I always wanted to work with Saeed Mirza and one day when I called him, I asked him for him because I thought his assistant had answered the call. I was so shocked that it was him on the other side that the receiver slipped from my hand and I couldn’t muster the courage to speak to him or call back again.
Once a friend of mine was supposed to audition for Sarfarosh (1999), but he went elsewhere. So this bunch of people who came looking for him caught hold of me and asked me to audition instead. I went ahead and got selected… That’s how I got my first break, although it was a blink-and-miss role. After that I worked as a junior artiste in some ads, did some B and C grade films too.
I was staying with a friend at Four Bungalows when I heard that a television commercial was being shot in Film City. This person who gave us the information said he had spoken to the makers on our behalf and we rushed there. We had to walk all the way because we didn’t have the money to buy a bus ticket. The ad required that a group of people sit in a bus and do random actions. But I chose to sleep inside because I didn’t want to get noticed. After all, I was a theatre actor and had worked as a junior artiste in ads. In the evening, when we had to get our payment, one of the ad coordinators asked for our card which we didn’t have. So, instead of R2000, he gave us R1000 and kept the remaining money with him. My friend and I went to the bar in Adarsh Nagar, ate and drank to our hearts’ content as we had not had proper food that month.
While leaving the bar, we both had only R200 each in our pockets and the next day, we were back to our struggle.
My younger brother, Shamas, moved to Mumbai a few years after me and began working in television. I was still a struggler and we stayed together. So even if one of us was out of work, the other one would pay the bills.
A few months after Sarfarosh, I met Anurag Kashyap as he was shooting for Shool. He asked me if I had done some work earlier. I mentioned Sarfarosh and when I told him about the role, a faint smile played on his lips. He had felt that my role in Sarfarosh was not played by an actor, but a real person. That was a big compliment for me and he signed me for Black Friday. After that I did New York and offers gradually started pouring in. I was able to shift to Malad, but life still wasn’t all that cushy. I had to change houses whenever the rent went up. I moved to a place in Andheri and when I bagged Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), I started staying in Yari Road and have been there ever since.
When I look back at those days, many sad memories come hurtling back. It was a harsh, hard struggle. I pray to god that no one should see such bad times; I wouldn’t want to relive those painful days. Now although I am not struggling for survival, there are bigger challenges at hand. Then I was alone and now I have a family to support. But what keeps me going is my passion for acting and everyday, I strive to better my art. Thankfully, I am now at a position where I get to choose scripts and roles, but a blanket of insecurity also envelopes me. What if I sign the wrong film? The struggle will never end.

If there’s something you need to watch this weekend, I will strongly, strongly recommend Inside Out. Another gem added to the list of Disney/Pixar classics. This wonderful little gem is crazily imaginative, heartbreakingly poignant and hilarious in equal measure.
Hats off to the Pixar guys. With the exception of the Cars movies and, to an extent, A Bug’s Life, they’ve never disappointed me. And Inside Out reaffirms my faith that these guys make the best animation movies in the US.

i don’t think so, it was hardly funny with same old Pixar’s stereotypical characters and predictable story. Though, plot was unique and exceptional, and that’s what made this movie most awaited. But, it resulted in more disappointment.
i think overall as a movie it was average, it tried to be social message which was never delivered.
No where close to monsters university which was Pixar’s last best, just little better than Brave.

this is a rather superficial and often silly discussion but Kunal Kapoor says something interesting at one point when he claims that there are many 100 or 150 crore grossers that have lost money and that everyone in the industry knows what those films are. But this is never the sort of picture you get from the trade and media.

No Indian-American can speak of a political career so full of accomplishments as Bobby Jindal — two-term governor, two-time congressman and several senior political appointments.
And he is now running for president, marking a major milestone for a minority Indian-American community seeking to leverage its fabulous wealth for political power in recent years.
Anyone else might have found himself spoilt by a proud community. Not Jindal. His White House run announcement was greeted with a stream of derisive tweets and racial jokes instead.
Racially charged tweets hash-tagged #BobbyJindalIsSoWhite began trending within seconds of his speech and ran through the night, the next day and the day after the next day.
A community seemingly wounded by Jindal’s explicitly and repeatedly asserted desire to go beyond hyphenations, and not be identified as Indian-American, was exacting its revenge.
The rupture between him, the community’s most successful and now powerful politician yet, and the community seemed complete and final, in a Game-of-throne like flameout.
“I was stunned by the racial overtone of the reaction,” said a Republican operative who has known Jindal for a long time. He spoke on condition of anonymity so he could speak freely.
To be fair, Jindal, a Republican, never could count on the Indian American community, which is mostly Democratic, and gave up on it after early unhappy experiences.
His religion, catholic christian, may have played a role too.
Conspiracists in the Hindu-majority Indian-American fold believe Jindal gave up his birth religion that he inherited from his parents, Hinduism, to further his political career.
That’s a stretch, according to someone who had known him.
“His conversion process started in school when he was first introduced to Christianity and the Bible,” he said, “when politics couldn’t have been on the horizon for him.” Jindal has been on record about being first exposed to Christianity while in high school, and then, impressed, reading the bible in the closet so his parents couldn’t find out.
He converted while in college, way before he got into politics.
But the conversion charge has kind of stuck. Most Indian-Americans are, one, Hindus, and, two, believe it’s impossible for any of them to make it in US politics without converting.
Republican governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley is of Indian descent — her parents are Sikhs from Punjab, and have retained their religion, but she is christian, and is married to one.
Democratic House or Representatives member Ami Berra is also of India descent — parents are Hindus from Gujarat, and remain so — but he converted to Unitarian Christianity.
Neither of them has been challenged as much about their religion as Jindal, mostly because, commentators and observers said, they have been wise about their ties to the community.
Berra is co-chairman of the India caucus of the House of Representatives, a body of lawmakers brought together by their Indian-American constituents and voters.
And Haley puts in regular appearances at events that are important to the community — such as the Madison Square Garden reception for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Jindal stayed away. And now reasons were sought or offered.
“Nikki and Ami have indeed been smarter about their outreach to the community,” said an Indian American observer, adding, “Bobby has not helped his own case, yes.”
But, as Shekar Narasimhan, a Democrat, said, Jindal probably does not need the community. He has not pitched any one on either side of the political. Not yet, at least.
And Indian-Americans who worked once for him on his earlier campaigns, said they gave up waiting to be asked a long time ago — since he opted for local advisors.
Jindal first ran for public office — governor of Louisiana — in 2003. A few Indian-Americans who had known him worked for him, despite party affiliations, and ideology.
“It was important for me to be able to prove to the country that an Indian American could administer ably and represent everyone,” said an operative who worked with Jindal.
Jindal was not just a Republican candidate. He was a flag bearer for a community which was yearning to be recognized for its political power, and not just the clout of its cheques.
Jindal chose to go with his own instincts, na local advisers.
And then, finally, it is just politics.
“Bobby is a right-wing conservative Republican, and most Indian Americans aren’t, so there are a lot of mixed feelings about him,” said Toby Chaudhuri, a political strategist.
Anyone else, he argued, may have fared better.

Subhash Kapoor’s Guddu Rangeela is a fun film about two bumbling small-time crooks, played by Amit Sadh and Arshad Warsi, who are playing characters of Guddu and Rangeela, respectively.
In the film, Guddu and Rangeela are two small-time orchestra singers based in Haryana, who sing a song ‘Mata Ka Email’ that has the following lyrics — ‘Kal Raat Mata Ka Mujhe Email Aaya Hai, Mata Ne Mujhko Facebook Pe Bulaya Hai’. We have learnt that this song has allegedly upset the sentiments of a few religious organisations across North and West parts of the country. As a result, the makers have received several emails and threatening calls asking them to remove this song from the film. The makers have been threatened that if they don’t remove the song, they would risk facing dire consequences, including disruptions at the theatres. Recently in Ludhiana, there were demonstrations held demanding a ban to be put on the film and posters of the film were put on fire.

Worldwide, the dinosaur movie has now taken in an astounding $1.2 billion, and it has not even opened yet in Japan, a major market. ABCD 2 grossed 16 crore nett in its second weekend to take its business to around 87.50 crore nett. It was the second highest second weekend of the year after after Tanu Weds Manu Returns and better than films like Gabbar Is Back, Baby and Dil Dhadakne Do. If compared with some of the films last year then it is comparable to a 2 States and better Singham Returns , Bang Bang, Jai Ho and Ek Villain
The film is still being driven by Mumbai circuit where the business has surpassed 33 crore nett and is closing on in the 37 crore nett (5 weeks) of Tanu Weds Manu Returns fast.
ABCD 2 is also likely to cross the business of Tanu Weds Manu Returns in CP Berar and Nizam / Andhra. Basically any circuit which has cities from Maharashtra will be number one for the year.

Dil Dhadakne went to 75 crore nett in its fourth weekend. The film did drop after the first week but has slowly crept to the 75 crore nett mark as the film has stayed in the multiplexes of the big metros like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. The fourth weekend added around 1 crore nett.
Tany Weds Manu Returns stands at 146.50 crore nett after its fifth weekend. It will be the 11th highest grossing film of all time. The distributor share of the film will be 66-67 crore which is the 15th highest ever.
Piku has finished its business on 78.50 crore nett and is the biggest grosser of the year in West Bengal with business close to 7 crore nett. The 5% ratio circuit is almost double for this film.

Offence, it is said, is the best form of defence, and that’s what seems to be playing out in this so-called ‘clash’ of two superstar films scheduled for release on the same date next year.
On the face of it, the obvious victim is the film that had announced its release date first and one would feel that with the much-coveted date taken, the production house behind the second film should have refrained from choosing the same date. However, sources tell us, the truth is not as simple as that.
Apparently, much before the first film made its announcement, the producers of both films had already had a phone conversation wherein, among other things, the likely release dates of their major films was also discussed. The head honcho at the production house behind the second film shared in confidence that he was looking to block the big date but wasn’t going to announce the same till the time was right. The big producer (and he is as big as they get!) asked the partner-producer of the first film whether they had locked their date and was told that no decision had been taken yet. That being so, the solo producer went ahead with planning his production so as to be ready by the earmarked date.
Imagine the producer’s surprise, therefore, when subsequently, the other production house publicly announced the very release date that had been discussed during their phone call. Hurt aside, cast and crew dates as also shooting schedules had already been locked and so this producer decided to stick to his guns and also announced the same date recently.
That set the cat among the pigeons and the trade is agog with various theories about what the hidden agendas are. On their part, the production house that announced the date first has quickly assumed the role of martyr and is making hurt noises about how the spirit of fraternity and cooperation is dead in the industry. Obviously, there is no mention of the phone call that preceded their announcement! Worse, some are also trying to present this as a personal battle between the two superstars in the respective films when neither of them was involved in the discussions nor the decisions, given that their primary role is to perform and both films have experienced producers backing them.
Of course, with more than a year to go for the contentious release date, one would assume that the last has not been heard on this kissa clash ka. Hmmm….given all this drama, intrigue and action, maybe some enterprising producer can make a film on these behind-the-scenes twists and turns… and also release this third film on the same date!

Btw, Raees would SRK’s 3rd release in the gap of 7-8 months. Last time it happened was in 2004(MHN, VZ and Swades). Same style of movies sequence. Full on commercial Home Production, Dilwale = MHN, YRF Fan = VZ(but Fan is still offbeat to an extent esp compared to VZ) and Raees = Swades (kinda offbeat).

that would be a real battle though the Salman fans would say that Sultan was an offbeat film because Salman was trying to play an adult, SRK fans would say Raees was an art film because it wasn’t a Yashraj love story, Aamir fans would just enjoy a good movie and predictably a success would emerge!

I really hope the release dates of these two hold till the end as two big movies coming together is a good thing and the hype of ‘clash’ etc can be neutralized and limited. It’s definitely good for box office
earnings and combined money flowing in.
This is also good for the audience in the long run as they will get to see better movies and finally ‘content’ will actually turn out to be the real king because initial cashing of the weekend will no more be in play and a longer inning at the box office will be required to be profitable.
Lastly all these talks of bullying etc will fly out of the window and people will stop chirping about camps /factions/ wings/ groups/ lobby/
bloc/ coterie/ sect etc.

I think this clash theory is so going down, just having multiple releases that too during holidays is not really a clash. Christmas can easily accommodate multiple films as there are lot of holidays in that 10 days period and watching 2 movies is no big deal for movie lovers. BM and Dilwale releasing together is just fine as well. Samething with Eid and Diwali. Records might not break but eventually well made movies will be success.

that’s a fair point except that when films are designed to just get to the biggest numbers and when these same numbers are hyped to death everywhere and become the ‘only’ thing that matters the clash then becomes something significant. I think that when films appeal to completely different demographics and when the production scale is not comparable either a clash is fine. TZP v Welcome for example. However the key thing here is that the smaller film must get proper screens. often the bigger productions drown out everything else irrespective of how well or not they’re doing. This then is a problem because people might be willing to watch the smaller release but not find convenient showtimes in many cases. A film with fantastic WOM can always do well but anything less and things become tricky. In any case the bar is high for any film that doesn’t look like an absolute blockbuster sort of deal that most people show up for even when the reviews are not great. At least in the initial phase. With a smaller film and despite stars it’s hard to clear that hurdle without strong WOM (another reason why Aamir is in a singular position.. when he’s attached to a project there’s no other bar to clear.. so whether people like films about wrestlers or not they’ll give Aamir the benefit of the doubt.. with every other star this has to be earned.. the trailers have to excite or whatever..). To sum up it’s easier to distract a potential audience from a smaller film, hard to do this with a big one which is literally all over the place.
Leaving all this aside though I do agree with your point. Competition is rarely the difference between a film succeeding or failing but the gross can nonetheless be significantly affected. on the Sultan-Raees thing if the date holds it works more for SRK in my view. Because the hype helps the smaller film more. Also by the end SRK will be peddling this as a small and/or offbeat film and will keep pulling himself out of the competition as he otherwise literally competes and becomes part of that high profile clash. Unless his film absolutely fails it’s a win-win for him. Specially if he has Dilwale in the bank.

This is not a good thing at all. This is not a Welcome vs TZP where two movies are having different release strategies. This is a clash of 2 superstars who will both want the maximum screens. There are only around 3000 decent screens in India. Adding all B screens it is around 4000. Now a big release will want to maximize and typically a Bhajrangi Baijaan or Dilwaale will release in 3500 screens. So there is no way both movies will get enough screens here to make any records worthwhile. The only movie which will win here is the one with content and even that movies gross will be severely restricted. An immediate example is Jilla vs Veeram in TN last Pongal and both movies were severely affected in the end.
The movie which will suffer here is Raees which doesn’t look an out an out entertainer atleast now. But you never know if all this arty thing is just an eyewash as you never know what you can get with SRK

The first trailor of both these movies need to be spot on. If Sultan gives a Bodyguard kind of vibe and Raees gives a classy vibe, SRK will thump Salman with his multiplex pull. Where SRK will suffer most is in the single screens. Overseas and Multiplex are still his forte’s (relatively).

You make valid points Krish and reading between the lines to what SRK is saying today, I doubt this clash is taking place plus YRF at the other end of the equation will tilt it in their favor and srk will make Excel back off. Further SRK does not have anything till year end next year after this , so he will not rush for this release as next year Eid is earlier and on July 03rd/04th itself so if Fan releases in between Dilwale and Raees it will be an overkill of srk releases.
May be at the moment they will indulge in milking this clash hype and this will also assist Salman remain talking point nearing release of his BB as he is seems to be going low profile with publicity due to his court case verdict and some of the negativity surrounding his bail.
This new clash also helps srk to effectively neutralizes the negativity he was earning due to pushing Bajirao Mastani out to next year. So the bully tag gets efficaciously removed with the taalk of this new clash.

Since both are towards the fag end of their blockbuster career its not going to make much difference to these two stars. But this kind of clash/simultaneous release can be a good precedent to incoming crowd of stars. The only thing to be looked here is reaction of yrf and their equations with srk which will come under some kind of stress if not already….
YRF has from time to time used these big ticket movies with the sole purpose of cashing in on their good equations with the Khans and to stay afloat in between those Kill Dill and DBB. They would again look to maximize their profits and Raees though with Dholakia will at least be some sort of distraction to the earnings if content is not there.
The issue is for Dangal and novelty is going to be missing and if by chance Salman nails the performance as a wrestler going by the prep and tweet here

these days you can extend things quite a bit. Things have become very Hollywoodized in India and to the point where you can keep associating yourself with certain kinds of projects as long as you have minimal standing as a ‘senior’ star, filling in the demographic gaps with younger stars, and in between doing more reasonable (smaller) projects that have a fair chance of succeeding. It’s not an easy combination to pull off but it can be done. SRK has never quite had the script sense for this stuff but he certainly has survivor instincts. for instance he could certain do a couple more with Shetty with a similar combo. Does this result in loss of prestige all the while? Absolutely. But if you’re already a senior star you are less bothered about this. It’s not as if you have too many options. What you want to do is the prestige film one way or the other (big commercial film or whatever) that keeps you in some sort of running.
Also note that this generation of stars is greatly helped by younger generations that are also not interested in business-as-usual. They too want the prestige films, they too want to be seen as doing different stuff. They might get better films as younger stars but it’s still about the right projects. In other words no one’s doing a Salman (barring Salman!). The gap then between a young star at his peak and an older off-peak becomes less apparent in such circumstances because the younger star too cannot generate crazy initials in genres that are less formulaic. Obviously one can only take this so far but then no star who’s on the wrong side of 50 is going to be completely unrealistic about his prospects.

Watched Dharm Sanket mein. Not a bad movie. Good acting By Paresh.
Watched Bombay Velvet. Nostalgic stuff. Great sets and heavenly songs.Anushka’s lypsynch was nice. Ranbir’s acting was sincere and I forgot he was Ranbir. Classy movie. Bombay of those days looked mesmerising.
Both these good movies missed the bus of BO.

What was it like working with Gautamiji again? Your dispassionate assessment of her performance?
I am capable of decrying Kamal Haasan’s bad performance fearlessly and supporting good ones shamelessly. So it would be unjust not to laud Ms. Gautami’s performance. She has done very well and has grown in understanding of her craft better in absentia. I think the distance and years have helped her get a vantage view. The tragedy with actors who are female and are learning on the job is this. When they fully grasp their craft it will be time for them to retire. G has beaten that tragedy, thanks to Drishyam alias Paapanasam.

Belasheshe was so disappointing.
Boring filmmaking. Melodramatic storytelling. Inconsistent characterization. Uninspired, clichéd performances. The idea of watching private moments of your old parents through hidden cameras is disgusting enough, and those teary eyes make it more so. The writing is careless all over. It is not clear whether the patriarch played by Soumitra Chatterjee decides on his outlandish act because he wants his wife to be independent ( swabalambi) or because he likes solitude and wants t embark on adventures across different lands. When he comes back to his wife he says, ‘ I somehow managed to make the morning cup of tea, but couldn’t get around to making the afternoon cup, felt kind of lazy.’ What was his faithful Man Friday Ganesh doing? I thought the express purpose of taking him along was for tasks like these. The least he could do was to make two cups of tea a day. The conversation between the old couple is stilted. A line like ‘Was there love between us, or was it merely long years of habit’ is so out of place between two who we have never seen conversing in that tone. She says she had been reading one of the authors he publishes but she never told him about it lest he stop bringing his books home? Why on earth? Why should he be against her reading books? She might be too caught up with household chores to express her love, but how does he forget her birthday? He who was so in love with her from the day he saw her black and white photograph?
The resolution of marital problems of all the siblings during the fortnight’s stay in Shantiniketan is as contrived and carelessly written as the rest of the film. It is all a terrible mess and a big bore, and the laughably inappropriate use of Rabindrasangeet like ‘ Shay je maaney na maana’ and the perfunctory use of an Anupam Roy song in the credit titles ( which has become such a predictable fixture in a certain kind of Bengali films these days.) doesn’t help.

Ans. 50 crore is not a big number in general terms. The film does not really hold much appeal for the Hindi markets. The big city multiplex audience will look it at as a B grade film and zero face value makes it impossible with the other center multiplexes and single screen audience.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan’s love for their pet dogs is known to all. Recently, their pooches even made it to the newspapers. In an interaction with Dnaindia.com, Kareena said that both her dogs are the stars of Bandra. Apart from a Jack Russell with the name Elvis, she owns a pug which was gifted to them by Sonakshi Sinha, the report stated. Interestingly, the actress had named the pug after Leonardo DiCaprio! If everything works out, Emma Watson would soon be making her Bollywood debut with the biopic on the Mid-day journalist, J Dey. Nandita Singgha, the director-producer of the film, has apparently approached London-based actress, Emma Watson for the role of the female lead in the film. While Aamir will play the lead role of the murdered crime reporter, Emma has been approached to play the role of a British journalist who breaks the news of the murder to the world. However, a source has been quoted in a Bollywoodlife.com report as saying that the two won’t have any scenes together.

(Spoiler alert: I have almost told the whole story of the film. But then you aren’t really planning to see this, are you? If you are, then I suggest you read only the first three and the last four paragraphs.)
It was to get rid of the bad taste of ‘Belasheshe’ that I sought out a Tamil film and I was lucky to have hit upon the delicious ‘ Kaaka Muttai’ ( Crow’s Egg).
Right from the first scene when we encounter the younger of the two brothers who live with their mother and grandmother (their father is in jail) peeing in his sleep and the trail of liquid spreading across the room, we know this is going to be a special film.
The two brothers call themselves ‘ Chinna Kaaka Muttai’ and ‘Periay Kaaka Muttai’ and have an adult friend Pazharasam who loiters around the railway track and helps them pick up stray pieces of coal which they sell at three rupees a kilo. Little everyday things happen. They climb up a tree , pick up some bird’s eggs and eat then raw. Their home gets a TV. Their playground is sold off and a pizza joint comes up there, inaugurated by one of their slum boys who has made it good as an actor of sorts.
There life kinds of acquires an urgency of purpose when they see an advertisement for a juicy pizza on the TV and want to taste it. Their yearning for it is whetted by their encounter with the pizza delivery boy passing through their slum who lets them smell a pizza in return for a bit of help with the direction to the delivery address. They collect a colourful flyer with a phone number for ordering and the price of Rs. 300 prominently displayed. ‘Rs.300!’ grandma exclaims and sends them with Rs. 10 instead to the vegetable shop to get some tomatoes and capsicum. It’s a delight to watch her as she goes about trying to approximate a pizza by cutting the capsicum and tomatoes into the right shapes as shown in the pizza flyer and placing them on the dosa batter on the tawa. The boys say it doesn’t smell like pizza. Grandma says how can dosa batter smell like pizza. ‘ Dosa!’
They get to a more plentiful source of railway coal and start saving money seriously. They dial the number given on the pizza flyer. ‘ What’s the address?’, the pizza guy asks. Address? Do they have one? They ask their grandma. Girinagar something, she says. That obviously won’t do. They try to go to the pizza place itself, but the security won’t let them in. Having money isn’t enough. They must dress like the kids who are allowed in. They find ways of procuring some hep clothes. But this time not only are the barred from entry, the elder one is beaten up squarely by the manager. And what is worse, their friends from the slum witness their humiliation. One of them even records it on his cell phone.
In the meanwhile their grandma dies, and they give their pizza money for her funeral. But one thing leads to another. And they end up being invited by the PizzaStop owner for a royal treat of free pizza, welcomed with band baaja bandobast and media in full attendance.
So how do they like the pizza? No big deal apparently. They kind of prefer their grandma’s dosa. They return to their home in the slum. Life goes on. And yes, the younger one has stopped his bed wetting.
The film is so outrageously funny and entertaining one does not get time to think about the injustice of all and the sad lives these slum kids live. But again, the brothers are not sad. Anything but. They are so full of life, taking every challenge with a gung ho spirit. Their enjoyment of eating the raw bird’s egg, or paddling on the slum puddle in a makeshift raft made from some plastic crates, or their pride in saving money through hard work…is so contagious.
Their performance is so natural you have to see it to believe it. And so are the performances by all the supporting cast, especially the mother played with a quite dignity showing a myriad little emotions with just a look . Her body language conveys her world weariness lit up by her warm affection for the two lively kids.
But what lifts up the film many notches higher that what the storyline suggests is the debutant director M . Manikandan’s ’s vision. His observation of life in all its detail – from the shape of the capsicum the grandma cuts for her dosa-cum-pizza to the holes in the ten rupee notes someone gives them – fills you with a love of life that triumphs over all the poverty and squalor the family lives in. (I love the scene where the mother is washing clothes, one of the brother is throwing them one by one up to the top of a tile roof where the other brother is standing to catch them and lay them on a rope to dry. The suddenly a plane flues by and the attention of the brother on the roof is drawn by it and he misses catching the item of clothing and is hit by it on his face.) You share their familial love and bonding and the sense of optimism and their sporting engagement with the business of living.
This is in a way Pather Panchali set in an urban slum, with siblings as innocent and as lovable as Durga and Apu, their story told with bouncy music and quirky humor instead of sad sitar strains and poetic visuals. But it is no less poignant for it.

Ans. It is too far away to be confirmed. A lot of things will happen between now and next July. It can only be confirmed a few months into next year which will or films are sure to come on Eid 2017. If there is a clash there will be a winner as there is always barring very rare occasions but it does not really decide the biggest star as its not about one film.

Neeraj Ghaywan, whose directorial debut “Masaan” garnered much appreciation at the Cannes International Film Festival this year, says directors get too much credit for the success of the film.
“I will give it to the team. I have always maintained this in my life. I think the director gets too much credit for the film, but I think it is everybody’s effort and they are the one who made it possible,” Ghaywan said at the inaugural of sixth edition of Jagran Film Festival here.
The five-day film extravaganza was opened here on Wednesday by “Masaan”, which won two awards at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival earlier this year. Along with Ghaywan, stars like Sanjay Mishra, Richa Chadha, Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi were present at the screening.
The film unfolds a story of four people living in a small town — Varanasi– and how pre-set notions of society change their life and its consequences.
Ghaywan points out that shooting for the film was not a cake walk.
“There were challenges like recreating live ghats, shooting with fire, diving sequences and then the time frame, economy and budget. There were so man variables. But we all were honest to the project and we all were in it together,” he added.
Produced by Drishyam Films, Phantom Films, Macassar Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, “Masaan” is scheduled to hit Indian theatres on July 24.

This week will see a clash between Guddu Rangeela and Second Hand Husband. Both films are not looking to open well and will be dependent on word of mouth. Guddu Rangeela will have the edge due to better promotion giving it better awareness.
Second Hand Husband has better chances in East Punjab as the hero Gippy Grewal is a star in Punjabi films, infact the second biggest star in the industry. Normally his Punjabi films pick up 70-75 lakhs nett on day one in East Punjab and that is with limited business in the centres of Haryana and Himachal. Here the territory gets bigger as Hindi film so makers will probably expect more.
But its unlikely to be the case as the film is in Hindi so the language factor means you lose a size-able chunk of the audience leaving collections less than the Punjabi films. Guddu Rangeela will have better collections in all circuits barring East Punjab..Both films have a chance on word of mouth as there is no big release next week which does give them time. ABCD 2 will also challenge the new releases and over the weekend could even beat them if they don’t get any appreciation. There is also Terminator releasing which won’t be among the stronger Hollywood releases but has chances of beating the Hindi films as they are weak as far as initial goes.

Mammootty, Aishwarya in Mani Ratnam film

“Reports say Mammootty is all set to play the lead role in veteran director Mani Ratnam’s next film. His last flick was O K Kanmani with Dulquar Salman in the lead role. Talks are on to rope in bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai. However, the reports have not been confirmed so far.
Mammootty had acted with Mani Ratnam in Dalapathy along with Rajanikanth in 1991. The director first decided to cast Mammootty in Iruvar along with Aishwarya Rai but as the actor thought the role was not suitable for him, Mohanlal replaced him.
The film would be a spy thriller like the Bourne Series. Reports said the director had met the actor and that the latter is keen in doing the project. Talks are on with a production company.
The shooting of the film is likely to begin in July 2016. Mani Ratnam is busy with the script of the film. P C Sriram is the cinematographer. As usual A R Rahman would be the music director of the film. Rahman had worked for Kandukonden Kandukonden starring Mammootty and Aishwarya Rai. The fans are eagerly waiting for the official announcement of the film.”

Fantastic poster; Mammootty has aged very well. The director’s earlier “Adaminte Makan Abu” is one of the very best Malayalam films of recent times so really looking forward to this-

Yes, Adaminte Makan Abu was an incredible little film. His next one with Mammootty Kunjananthante Kada was pretty mediocre though. Hope this is better.

Jaipur: A child has died in an accident between politician Hema Malini’s Mercedes and a Maruti Alto in Rajasthan today. The BJP leader’s car was speeding, said a police official.
Another child is among four others who were in the Alto and have been hospitalised. Hema Malini is not seriously hurt.
“I am being told the Mercedes was speeding. It drove over the divider,” said senior police officer Rajinder Tyagi to NDTV from Dausa, where the accident took place, about 60 km from the state capital of Jaipur.
The actor-turned-politician, 66, was treated for minor injuries in a Jaipur hospital. Staff said she walked in unaided and received a few stitches near her nose.
Hema Malini represents Mathura in Parliament. She was headed from her constituency to Jaipur, when the accident took place.

Sony books third spot with ‘PK’ premiere: TAM TV Ratings
