Papanasam is Kamal Haasan’s much awaited film and the hype in the Malayalam market is unprecedented. The distributors of Papanasam for North India were keen to have a special screening of the film in Mumbai. They planned to hold it a day before its release, on the 2nd.
Unfortunately they did not realise that it is Gautami’s birthday was on that day. So Kamal Haasan will not be able to make it.
Although he wanted to attend the special screening, he was unable to make it as he was spending time with Gautami on her birthday.
“Jaipur: A child has died in an accident between politician Hema Malini’s Mercedes and a Maruti Alto in Rajasthan today. The BJP leader’s car was speeding, said a police official.
Another child is among four others who were in the Alto and have been hospitalised. Hema Malini is not seriously hurt.
“I am being told the Mercedes was speeding. It drove over the divider,” said senior police officer Rajinder Tyagi to NDTV from Dausa, where the accident took place, about 60 km from the state capital of Jaipur.
The actor-turned-politician, 66, was treated for minor injuries in a Jaipur hospital. Staff said she walked in unaided and received a few stitches near her nose.
Hema Malini represents Mathura in Parliament. She was headed from her constituency to Jaipur, when the accident took place.”
The tragedy of today’s times is that Hema Malini’s minor injuries make more news and seem to be of more concern than the death of a 2 years old baby.
A real tragedy for the baby’s parents and family… R.I.P.
Usually they release the name of the accident victims. But so far they have kept it as top secret. Maybe they want to avoid media attention and problem for the filmstar.

ABCD 2 Has Decent Hold In Week Two

ABCD 2 grossed 25 crore nett apprx in week to take its business to near 97 crore crore nett. The film has shown drops on the weekdays in first and second week and if there was competition the film may have found it tough but everything around it apart from Jurassic World is going down the collections are decent.
The film is mainly doing the business on the strength of Mumbai circuit which in two weeks is similar to Tanu Weds Manu Returns lifetime business. The film is closing on in 37 crore nett in Mumbai.
The drop week on week is 65%. The film will hit the 100 crore nett mark on Saturday or Sunday and it remains to be seen if it can go to the 110 crore nett mark.
Wasn’t even aware their was a Hollywood remake on this in the works. I’m ambivalent about watching this – the trailer is solid, but a little too polished. Not sure it’ll have the potency of the Argentinian film.
The thing is that the Argentinian was deeply embedded to the nation’s political history. I am not sure how will this work without that very local/specific context.
the original is a very very solid script. The movie was always bound to get rave reviews specially with Jeetu Joseph at the helm. It can only go wrong in Hindi. Shriya Saran is a very wrong choice there. She is too hot to play that role to put it very crudely. And Devgan can never match Lalettan and Kamal. But even then the movie will be a hit because Hindi audiences really dont know what they are missing , specially the ones who havent seen Lalettan’s performance…
This is the year of ‘Ulaganayagan’ fans everywhere. The thespian’s second release this year ‘Papanasam’ is all set for a strong release. ‘Papanasam’ being a remake of the Malayalam blockbuster ‘Drishyam’ featuring Mohanlal in the lead has been generating curiosity among fans since the day of its announcement as to whether Kamal Haasan will top Mohanlal’s performance. We shall know soon.
“Papanasam” will be distributed by PRIME Media in North America (USA and Canada). Kamal Haasan is joined in ‘Papanasam’ by Gowthami on screen after many years and will be a definite highlight for fans everywhere. The film is directed by Jeethu Joseph who also wrote and directed the Malayalam original ‘Drishyam’. The film’s musical score has been composed by Ghibran and the audio has been well-received by audiences everywhere.
‘Papanasam’ will be releasing during the long Independence Day weekend in USA and Canada in over 70+ locations. The film is scheduled for a July 2nd premiere.

Length is strength. If so, this should gladden hearts of Salman fans.Running time of #BajrangiBhaijaan as applied to CBFC,is 163.36 minutes.
“Killa” is an absolutely terrific film and an outstanding debut. I haven’t seen “Kaaka Muttai” yet, but I doubt there will be better Indian film this year. Will try and put down my thoughts later, but one should make an attempt to watch this on the big screen. It joins the ranks of “Vihir”, “Deool”, “Gabhricha Paus” and “Fandry” (the latter two films are also debut works) as the summits of contemporary Marati cinema. With “Court”, “Killa” and Umesh Kulkarni’s “Highway” to follow, this seems to be the year of Marathi films.
Moments after I finished seeing ‘ Asa Jaoar Majhe’ (‘Labour of Love’) I had a strong urge to see it again, possibly the next day. But sadly that was the last show. The point is – it was a singular film viewing experience and like with a good piece of music I wanted to listen to it again. Why did I like it? Because, it engaged me so totally and gave me a meditative experience which is so rare in today’s times, in movies and elsewhere.
I generally see films only in theatres. And much of what I see there is essentially same. They have characters, a plot, some emotions, some humour, some smart lines, music and songs in the background, the same kind of pacing, the same kind of balancing of different elements …and some of them work out better than others. But in the end it all becomes a monotonous blur, without much of an impact. Once in while comes a film like ‘Mad Max: The Fury Road’, which hits you because it throws you off balance with its frenetic energy, fecund production design with every film filled with details neither your eyes nor your mind can register, almost no dialogue, and relentless action. And then comes a film like ‘ As a Jaoar Majhe’, in the opposite end of the spectrum, which has actually no dialogue, no interaction between the two protagonists except for the final ten minutes of fantasy sequence, no plot, no dramatic tension, no final solution. Perfect Zen garden of a film.
The film starts with a black screen and a voice over droning on about recessionary times and working class struggles on the airwaves. This is followed by a shot of the back of a young woman, neatly draped in a saree, manouvering her way through serpentine alleys, on her way to work at a handbag factory. Meanwhile, a young man wakes up in a modest home, takes bath, puts out wet clothes for drying, takes out food from the fridge to eat, smokes a cigarette and leaves for work: night shift at a printing press. At one point we realize, that the two are married, forced to work during different hours, only able to meet for a few minutes before she leaves for work again. And we realize that they love each other and long for moments of togetherness. That’s about it.
But there is beauty in every frame…whether it is the wall with peeling paint, or a setting sun captured patiently in real time, or the palpitating gills of a live rohu fish in the market, or a super close up water evaporating on a heated pan, or wet foot prints drying off the floor, or a slab of fish getting thrown into heating oil. Much of the film is so painterly. But these scenes could have ended up just as pretty still photos if these micro-details did not connect the dots of what was happening in the lives of our two protagonists as they sheltered and fanned the flames of their love against their formidable adversary – the hard economic reality. The meticulousness with which they went about their routine …neatly folding the clothes, packing the food in different containers, then in a plastic packet, and then the packet in a cloth bag…shows a certain kind of dignity in their act of survival, and a kind of elegance and intensity in their love. At no point do they let their economic hardship let them slip into slovenliness or tempt them into any kind of cheap escape. They are careful with each action of theirs, cautious in their spending, strict about their saving, interacting very little with others at work. It is as if they are protecting some precious core of their persona so that their love retains its purity and intensity. The lead performers Ritwik Chakraborty and Basabdutta Chatterjee bring out this grace under pressure perfectly, making us care for and love the characters in spite of their boring, event-free life.
Their daily struggle for sanity and dignity is brought forth through the deliberate slow pacing and micro-detailing – as he stretches and curls in his bed trying to find just the right position for some restful sleep, or when he turns the regulator of the fan to get the right degree of cooling. Of course there are moments of joy too which makes this struggle possible … when he examines the live fish in the market, or when she pours the rice, dal, and various condiments into their containers, taking in their varied colours and trexture. The absence of the spoken word makes it possible for us to meditate on all these details.
There is much silence in the film. But it is not devoid of sound. There are ambient sounds like the drumming of the rickety fan, an old film songs floating across, a music teacher teaching Rabindra Sangeet to a girl who sings off-note and hawkers crying their wares on the streets.And I can see the film again and again just to hear Geeta Dutt sing ‘Tumi Je Aamar Ogo’ or Bismilla Khan play Tilak Kamod on the sehnai against the magical visuals of mundane everyday life that the director-cinematographer Aditya Vikram Sengupta paints with his camera.
Day in and day out, the media tries to drill into our head that films are entertainment. And we forget that cinema is also art. It is good to see a film, not in a festival, but in a regular release, to remind us of that.

With #ABCD2, Varun Dhawan as well as director Remo D’Souza will march into ₹ 100 cr club. Shraddha Kapoor’s 2nd film to cross ₹ 100 cr.
“Old, but not obsolete.” Arnold Schwarzenegger repeatedly deadpanned that line in “Terminator Genisys,” which opened on Wednesday, but a lot of moviegoers in North America decided otherwise.
“Terminator Genisys,” which cost Skydance Media and Paramount Pictures at least $155 million to make, took in an estimated $28.7 million over the weekend, for a five-day total of $44.2 million, according to Rentrak, which compiles box office data. Paramount had hoped for a five-day total of $50 million to $55 million.
The opening box office results for “Terminator Genisys,” which returned Mr. Schwarzenegger to his signature cyborg role, were among the worst in the five-movie “Terminator” series, which began in 1984. The movie did much better overseas, where Mr. Schwarzenegger’s star power is brighter; “Terminator Genisys” has so far taken in $85.5 from partial release in international markets, Paramount said.
Bad reviews likely played a role in the United States and Canada. “The critics were a notch more negative than we expected, which definitely set us back coming off ‘Terminator 4,’ which was not well liked,” Rob Moore, Paramount’s vice chairman, said by telephone on Sunday. He was referencing “Terminator Salvation,” which cost $200 million to make and was rejected by audiences and critics alike in 2009. (“Terminator Salvation” was released by Warner Bros.)
Mr. Moore noted that the crowd that did turn out for “Terminator Genisys” seemed to enjoy it. It received a B-plus grade in CinemaScore exit polls.
The film also ran into stronger-than-expected competition. The No. 1 movie over the Fourth of July weekend was “Jurassic World” (Universal Pictures), which collected about $30.9 million, for a four-week domestic total of $558.2 million.
Pixar’s “Inside Out” (Walt Disney Studios) was a close second, selling about $30.1 million in tickets, for a three-week domestic total of $246.2 million.
The trending on Jurassic World is fantastically good. Specially given how superbly Inside Out has itself done. In fact it’s hard to think of two other massive films in the recent past that competed with each other within a week of release and both did so well. Here a crucial point must be made. In India the competition is far more damaging to films in most if not all scenarios. This wasn’t once the case. Today it is so. The reason is simple economics. A very large cross-section of even a multiplex audience cannot go and watch every significant film that’s out there. Budgetary considerations come into play at some point. With family crowds this is an even greater factor (how many times can a family of 4 or 5 make it to multiplexes?!). As a result when there’s competition you’re much more likely to choose. In the US just about anyone could afford to watch both Jurassic or Inside Out. Certainly a very large majority could do this. This was also the case in say the 70s in Bombay when several films would enjoy long runs together. Now obviously if it’s possible in contemporary America (the society with the greatest distractions!) and in 70s India at the other end it’s obvious that as long as there is some sort of reasonable pricing system you can get people to watch multiple films. But if the same folks are forced to choose based on economic considerations even more than one well-reviewed film might not make much of a difference. Put differently you might believe the WOM on both, wish to watch both and be unable to do so ultimately. In the same sense when there are too many significant releases week after week at the tail end some films suffer disproportionately. Or those that release just before major holidays (people save up for more important films). The point once again is that these factors have to be given enough importance. One cannot just look at box office performance or trending or competition without also looking into socio-economic factors. A much larger cross-section of the potential audience once upon a time in India and then today in the US could or can afford to watch pretty much as many movies as they’re interested in. This is not true in Hindi-speaking India today. Many people have been priced out of the system, and the ones that haven’t still have to make choices (unless it’s something like TN where the state caps multiplex prices). This again benefits the major production or the bigger stars. If forced to choose you’re not likely to go with the lower profile film. This isn’t the difference between a hit and a flop in most cases but it can significantly affect the gross.
Not surprised about Terminator. Got terrible reviews. Did 26% on rottentomatoes!
Inside Out might be the winner this weekend when final numbers come out.Regardless, Jurassic has done phenomenally well.

Look at JW – its screen counts have been around the 4K mark for 4 weekends now. Inside Out just a shade lower. This week Terminator and MM in the 3.5K range.
The capacity of the US market is huge. There is not this front ended market for a start – it’s a very mature market.
With all this competition, week after week, JW has held a less than 50% weekend and weekly drop thus far. Inside Out is the highest grossing film EVER that has not reached #1 in the weekend charts! So you have JW jostling with a bit of history and edging it out each week.
I wouldn’t call JW a “nothing film”, but in a sense this is not a unique or original film at all. It’s a reboot and for that alone the collections are quite remarkable. It will go past $600mm quite comfortably now and has a shot at Titanic’s # but that will be tough.
The Indian market is so far behind. The Chinese have out grown it already.
It’s not even the fact India may not have enough cinemas – I think you are pretty right, the ticketing is way out of control and priced many people out. If more cinemas were built, the distributers will take all the theatres and aim for records and front loading, rather than the US system where it seems 4.5K is a bit of a ceiling and 3-4 films can screen between 3-4.5K. India will never “aim” to achieve that. They’d rather have 1 release gobble everything to break records than simply create a system where films run longer with “less” screens and better competition. It’s not as if films cant gross big this way – as the US proves time and time again.
Simply put, the US just have a better control and handle on these things – and it creates a better culture.

ATHENS: Greeks voted overwhelmingly on Sunday to reject terms of a bailout, risking financial ruin in a show of defiance that could splinter Europe.
With nearly half of the votes counted, official figures showed 61 percent of Greeks rejecting the bailout offer. An official interior ministry projection confirmed the figure as close to the expected final tally.
The astonishingly strong victory by the ‘No’ camp overturned opinion polls that had predicted an outcome too close to call. It leaves Greece in uncharted waters: risking financial and political isolation within the euro zone and a banking collapse if creditors refuse further aid.
But for millions of Greeks the outcome was an angry message to creditors that Greece can longer accept repeated rounds of austerity that, in five years, had left one in four without a job. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has denounced the price paid for aid as “blackmail” and a national “humiliation”.
Hundreds of Greeks began pouring into the central Syntagma square in front of parliament to celebrate, after a week of building desperation as banks were shut and cash withdrawals rationed to prevent a collapse of the Greek financial system.
“This is an imprint of the will of the Greek people and now it’s up to Europeans to show if they respect our opinion and want to help,” said Nikos Tarasis, a 23-year-old student.

Hailing from the family of India’s most influential politicians, the Gandhis, Sanjay Gandhi’s life story was covered in a nutshell in the book ‘The Sanjay Story’, written by journalist Vinod Mehta. Now bringing the life of Sanjay Gandhi on the silver screen is Hansal Mehta.
The filmmaker, who is keen on making films based on real life incidents and personalities, has made Shahid (based on human rights activist and lawyer Shahid Azmi) and is also working on Aligarh and Simran, which are too based on true stories. Now, we hear that Hansal Mehta will be directing and co-producing the biopic on Sanjay Gandhi.
Which actor will play the title role of Sanjay Gandhi however is yet unknown.
Hurray! can never get enough of this franchise. My most awaited one in this context though is the Avatar sequel at the moment. It’s going to take place mostly underwater.
Avatar 2 will release with incredible hype for sure. Cameron seems to do these things at a snail’s pace but more or less hits the bull’s-eye. And the underwater gimmick – well this itself will be something very unique to wait for.
and he’s the only one who really waits till he has the right technology. For Avatar he actually had Canon develop cameras specially for him. Which is why the other 3D efforts are not even close to what he does. 99% of the time they’re conversions anyway and it’s never the same. Leaving aside Cameron’s unique efforts on Avatar I’d otherwise agree with Nolan that the ‘best’ cinematic experience in this sense might be a proper IMAX screen rather than 3D. On the most recent Dark Knight or even those portions in Interstellar the IMAX bits were awesome. The only hitch here is that they can’t shoot more than 8 min segments on existing technology and so the frame gets bigger only on certain portions. This enhances the impact of those segments but otherwise it’s weird to have the frame changing dimensions.
Soccer is turning out to be a hot commodity in the U.S. sport and poses a threat to other league sports. If Americans are not put off by the recent bribery scandal in FIFA and ugly turn of events, the new generation which also comprises of a wider immigrant population may take to soccer in a big way.
The soccer finals were a big low and high within a span of 24 hrs. What an awful loss for Messi at Copa Americana but US soccer team more or less made up for it with such a dominating display esp Carli loyld….then they have few eye candy stars in Alex Morgan and Julie Johnston are a regular at Sports Illustrated. Its time they graduate to Playboy.
yes felt really bad for Messi. They were heckling his family out there. Somehow he seems to have bad luck in these big national tournaments.
On soccer in the US I wouldn’t go too far with this. The men’s team is nowhere close to winning anything and without that promise it’s hard to keep generating this interest though the women’s team could keep putting up such numbers if it keeps performing this way.

I think its something to do with corporate vs individual tax laws in the country. I think Red Chillies is very active now and must be having much better allocation of incoming in the balance sheet while filing taxes than what srk would do on individual filing.
Individual taxes are normally very high and straight out with not much play and fewer deductions allowed. I don’t see any other reason because srk’s greed for money is well documented and he would not rest peacefully if he were to earn less than anyone else out there in Bollywood.
It was more disheartening because a win at major international final has eluded him again. Hope they are more kind to his impact and legacy when he is finally done because I have never seen a more humble wizard in soccer field esp when it comes to dribbling the ball and making a play. It is so pleasant to simply watch him play in this power play display of new soccer world.
I still feel if Di Maria wasn’t injured and if he were to play the world cup final against Germany, they would come out victorious. They were playing so well in tandem at that time.

Kollywood is now abuzz with speculations about Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film.
If names of Mammootty and Dhanush as lead actors in the ace filmmaker’s project were doing the rounds earlier, latest reports suggest that Mani Ratnam has zeroed in on his “OK Kanmani” hero Dulquer Salmaan, besides Karthi and Shruti Haasan, as lead artists for his next flick.
There were also rumours that Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film will be bilingual, in Tamil and Malayalam, but now it appears it will be a Tamil flick, with both Karthi and Dulquer sharing screen space together.
AR Rahman, who has composed for many Mani Rathnam films, will be the composer for this movie also.
Karthi had started his film career as an assistant director in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil-Hindi thriller film “Aayutha Ezhuthu”, which starred Suriya, Madhavan and Siddharth.
Apparently, the young actor was offered to play a role in the 2004 hit movie, but denied and chose to be part of the directorial team.
Karthi, who had a series of flops, had recently made a huge comeback with his performances in “Komban” and “Madras”.
Meanwhile Dulquer’s last release was Mani Ratnam’s “OK Kanmani” and the actor had managed to impress Tamil audience with his looks and performance.
The message accompanying the image, which is a morphed version of a screen grab of a Hindi news channel, claims the actor has said that he does not need the support of Muslims to make his movie, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, a hit.

ABCD 2 Has Decent Hold In Week Two

ABCD 2 grossed 25 crore nett apprx in week to take its business to near 97 crore crore nett. The film has shown drops on the weekdays in first and second week and if there was competition the film may have found it tough but everything around it apart from Jurassic World is going down the collections are decent.
The film is mainly doing the business on the strength of Mumbai circuit which in two weeks is similar to Tanu Weds Manu Returns lifetime business. The film is closing on in 37 crore nett in Mumbai.
The drop week on week is 65%. The film will hit the 100 crore nett mark on Saturday or Sunday and it remains to be seen if it can go to the 110 crore nett mark.

the original is a very very solid script. The movie was always bound to get rave reviews specially with Jeetu Joseph at the helm. It can only go wrong in Hindi. Shriya Saran is a very wrong choice there. She is too hot to play that role to put it very crudely. And Devgan can never match Lalettan and Kamal. But even then the movie will be a hit because Hindi audiences really dont know what they are missing , specially the ones who havent seen Lalettan’s performance…

This is the year of ‘Ulaganayagan’ fans everywhere. “Killa” is an absolutely terrific film and an outstanding debut. I haven’t seen “Kaaka Muttai” yet, but I doubt there will be better Indian film this year. Will try and put down my thoughts later, but one should make an attempt to watch this on the big screen. It joins the ranks of “Vihir”, “Deool”, “Gabhricha Paus” and “Fandry” (the latter two films are also debut works) as the summits of contemporary Marati cinema. With “Court”, “Killa” and Umesh Kulkarni’s “Highway” to follow, this seems to be the year of Marathi films.

Moments after I finished seeing ‘ Asa Jaoar Majhe’ (‘Labour of Love’) I had a strong urge to see it again, possibly the next day. But sadly that was the last show. The point is – it was a singular film viewing experience and like with a good piece of music I wanted to listen to it again. Why did I like it? Because, it engaged me so totally and gave me a meditative experience which is so rare in today’s times, in movies and elsewhere.
I generally see films only in theatres. And much of what I see there is essentially same. They have characters, a plot, some emotions, some humour, some smart lines, music and songs in the background, the same kind of pacing, the same kind of balancing of different elements …and some of them work out better than others. But in the end it all becomes a monotonous blur, without much of an impact. Once in while comes a film like ‘Mad Max: The Fury Road’, which hits you because it throws you off balance with its frenetic energy, fecund production design with every film filled with details neither your eyes nor your mind can register, almost no dialogue, and relentless action. And then comes a film like ‘ As a Jaoar Majhe’, in the opposite end of the spectrum, which has actually no dialogue, no interaction between the two protagonists except for the final ten minutes of fantasy sequence, no plot, no dramatic tension, no final solution. Perfect Zen garden of a film.
The film starts with a black screen and a voice over droning on about recessionary times and working class struggles on the airwaves. This is followed by a shot of the back of a young woman, neatly draped in a saree, manouvering her way through serpentine alleys, on her way to work at a handbag factory. Meanwhile, a young man wakes up in a modest home, takes bath, puts out wet clothes for drying, takes out food from the fridge to eat, smokes a cigarette and leaves for work: night shift at a printing press. At one point we realize, that the two are married, forced to work during different hours, only able to meet for a few minutes before she leaves for work again. And we realize that they love each other and long for moments of togetherness. That’s about it.
But there is beauty in every frame…whether it is the wall with peeling paint, or a setting sun captured patiently in real time, or the palpitating gills of a live rohu fish in the market, or a super close up water evaporating on a heated pan, or wet foot prints drying off the floor, or a slab of fish getting thrown into heating oil. Much of the film is so painterly. But these scenes could have ended up just as pretty still photos if these micro-details did not connect the dots of what was happening in the lives of our two protagonists as they sheltered and fanned the flames of their love against their formidable adversary – the hard economic reality. The meticulousness with which they went about their routine …neatly folding the clothes, packing the food in different containers, then in a plastic packet, and then the packet in a cloth bag…shows a certain kind of dignity in their act of survival, and a kind of elegance and intensity in their love. At no point do they let their economic hardship let them slip into slovenliness or tempt them into any kind of cheap escape. They are careful with each action of theirs, cautious in their spending, strict about their saving, interacting very little with others at work. It is as if they are protecting some precious core of their persona so that their love retains its purity and intensity. The lead performers Ritwik Chakraborty and Basabdutta Chatterjee bring out this grace under pressure perfectly, making us care for and love the characters in spite of their boring, event-free life.
Their daily struggle for sanity and dignity is brought forth through the deliberate slow pacing and micro-detailing – as he stretches and curls in his bed trying to find just the right position for some restful sleep, or when he turns the regulator of the fan to get the right degree of cooling. Of course there are moments of joy too which makes this struggle possible … when he examines the live fish in the market, or when she pours the rice, dal, and various condiments into their containers, taking in their varied colours and trexture. The absence of the spoken word makes it possible for us to meditate on all these details.
There is much silence in the film. But it is not devoid of sound. There are ambient sounds like the drumming of the rickety fan, an old film songs floating across, a music teacher teaching Rabindra Sangeet to a girl who sings off-note and hawkers crying their wares on the streets.And I can see the film again and again just to hear Geeta Dutt sing ‘Tumi Je Aamar Ogo’ or Bismilla Khan play Tilak Kamod on the sehnai against the magical visuals of mundane everyday life that the director-cinematographer Aditya Vikram Sengupta paints with his camera.
Day in and day out, the media tries to drill into our head that films are entertainment. And we forget that cinema is also art. It is good to see a film, not in a festival, but in a regular release, to remind us of that.

Ayushmann Khurrana’s brother Aparshakti who was earlier expected to debut with Neeraj Pandey’s Saat Uchakkey, has been roped in for Aamir Khan’s next, that will see the star playing the role of the wrestler Mahavir Phogat.
A source close to him, informs that it was his bass voice from his experience as a radio jockey that played a crucial role in getting him the part of Aamir’s nephew in the film.

“Old, but not obsolete.” Arnold Schwarzenegger repeatedly deadpanned that line in “Terminator Genisys,” which opened on Wednesday, but a lot of moviegoers in North America decided otherwise.
“Terminator Genisys,” which cost Skydance Media and Paramount Pictures at least $155 million to make, took in an estimated $28.7 million over the weekend, for a five-day total of $44.2 million, according to Rentrak, which compiles box office data. Paramount had hoped for a five-day total of $50 million to $55 million.
The opening box office results for “Terminator Genisys,” which returned Mr. Schwarzenegger to his signature cyborg role, were among the worst in the five-movie “Terminator” series, which began in 1984. The movie did much better overseas, where Mr. Schwarzenegger’s star power is brighter; “Terminator Genisys” has so far taken in $85.5 from partial release in international markets, Paramount said.
Bad reviews likely played a role in the United States and Canada. “The critics were a notch more negative than we expected, which definitely set us back coming off ‘Terminator 4,’ which was not well liked,” Rob Moore, Paramount’s vice chairman, said by telephone on Sunday. He was referencing “Terminator Salvation,” which cost $200 million to make and was rejected by audiences and critics alike in 2009. (“Terminator Salvation” was released by Warner Bros.)
Mr. Moore noted that the crowd that did turn out for “Terminator Genisys” seemed to enjoy it. It received a B-plus grade in CinemaScore exit polls.
The film also ran into stronger-than-expected competition. The No. 1 movie over the Fourth of July weekend was “Jurassic World” (Universal Pictures), which collected about $30.9 million, for a four-week domestic total of $558.2 million.
Pixar’s “Inside Out” (Walt Disney Studios) was a close second, selling about $30.1 million in tickets, for a three-week domestic total of $246.2 million.

The trending on Jurassic World is fantastically good. Specially given how superbly Inside Out has itself done. In fact it’s hard to think of two other massive films in the recent past that competed with each other within a week of release and both did so well. Here a crucial point must be made. In India the competition is far more damaging to films in most if not all scenarios. This wasn’t once the case. Today it is so. The reason is simple economics. A very large cross-section of even a multiplex audience cannot go and watch every significant film that’s out there. Budgetary considerations come into play at some point. With family crowds this is an even greater factor (how many times can a family of 4 or 5 make it to multiplexes?!). As a result when there’s competition you’re much more likely to choose. In the US just about anyone could afford to watch both Jurassic or Inside Out. Certainly a very large majority could do this. This was also the case in say the 70s in Bombay when several films would enjoy long runs together. Now obviously if it’s possible in contemporary America (the society with the greatest distractions!) and in 70s India at the other end it’s obvious that as long as there is some sort of reasonable pricing system you can get people to watch multiple films. But if the same folks are forced to choose based on economic considerations even more than one well-reviewed film might not make much of a difference. Put differently you might believe the WOM on both, wish to watch both and be unable to do so ultimately. In the same sense when there are too many significant releases week after week at the tail end some films suffer disproportionately. Or those that release just before major holidays (people save up for more important films). The point once again is that these factors have to be given enough importance. One cannot just look at box office performance or trending or competition without also looking into socio-economic factors. A much larger cross-section of the potential audience once upon a time in India and then today in the US could or can afford to watch pretty much as many movies as they’re interested in. This is not true in Hindi-speaking India today. Many people have been priced out of the system, and the ones that haven’t still have to make choices (unless it’s something like TN where the state caps multiplex prices). This again benefits the major production or the bigger stars. If forced to choose you’re not likely to go with the lower profile film. This isn’t the difference between a hit and a flop in most cases but it can significantly affect the gross.
Not surprised about Terminator. Got terrible reviews. Did 26% on rottentomatoes!

Look at JW – its screen counts have been around the 4K mark for 4 weekends now. Inside Out just a shade lower. This week Terminator and MM in the 3.5K range.
The capacity of the US market is huge. There is not this front ended market for a start – it’s a very mature market.
With all this competition, week after week, JW has held a less than 50% weekend and weekly drop thus far. Inside Out is the highest grossing film EVER that has not reached #1 in the weekend charts! So you have JW jostling with a bit of history and edging it out each week.
I wouldn’t call JW a “nothing film”, but in a sense this is not a unique or original film at all. It’s a reboot and for that alone the collections are quite remarkable. It will go past $600mm quite comfortably now and has a shot at Titanic’s # but that will be tough.
The Indian market is so far behind. The Chinese have out grown it already.
It’s not even the fact India may not have enough cinemas – I think you are pretty right, the ticketing is way out of control and priced many people out. If more cinemas were built, the distributers will take all the theatres and aim for records and front loading, rather than the US system where it seems 4.5K is a bit of a ceiling and 3-4 films can screen between 3-4.5K. India will never “aim” to achieve that. They’d rather have 1 release gobble everything to break records than simply create a system where films run longer with “less” screens and better competition. It’s not as if films cant gross big this way – as the US proves time and time again.
Simply put, the US just have a better control and handle on these things – and it creates a better culture.

ATHENS: Greeks voted overwhelmingly on Sunday to reject terms of a bailout, risking financial ruin in a show of defiance that could splinter Europe.
With nearly half of the votes counted, official figures showed 61 percent of Greeks rejecting the bailout offer. An official interior ministry projection confirmed the figure as close to the expected final tally.
The astonishingly strong victory by the ‘No’ camp overturned opinion polls that had predicted an outcome too close to call. It leaves Greece in uncharted waters: risking financial and political isolation within the euro zone and a banking collapse if creditors refuse further aid.
But for millions of Greeks the outcome was an angry message to creditors that Greece can longer accept repeated rounds of austerity that, in five years, had left one in four without a job. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has denounced the price paid for aid as “blackmail” and a national “humiliation”.
Hundreds of Greeks began pouring into the central Syntagma square in front of parliament to celebrate, after a week of building desperation as banks were shut and cash withdrawals rationed to prevent a collapse of the Greek financial system.
“This is an imprint of the will of the Greek people and now it’s up to Europeans to show if they respect our opinion and want to help,” said Nikos Tarasis, a 23-year-old student.

and he’s the only one who really waits till he has the right technology. For Avatar he actually had Canon develop cameras specially for him. Which is why the other 3D efforts are not even close to what he does. 99% of the time they’re conversions anyway and it’s never the same. Leaving aside Cameron’s unique efforts on Avatar I’d otherwise agree with Nolan that the ‘best’ cinematic experience in this sense might be a proper IMAX screen rather than 3D. On the most recent Dark Knight or even those portions in Interstellar the IMAX bits were awesome. The only hitch here is that they can’t shoot more than 8 min segments on existing technology and so the frame gets bigger only on certain portions. This enhances the impact of those segments but otherwise it’s weird to have the frame changing dimensions.

Soccer is turning out to be a hot commodity in the U.S. sport and poses a threat to other league sports. If Americans are not put off by the recent bribery scandal in FIFA and ugly turn of events, the new generation which also comprises of a wider immigrant population may take to soccer in a big way.
The soccer finals were a big low and high within a span of 24 hrs. What an awful loss for Messi at Copa Americana but US soccer team more or less made up for it with such a dominating display esp Carli loyld….then they have few eye candy stars in Alex Morgan and Julie Johnston are a regular at Sports Illustrated. Its time they graduate to Playboy.

yes felt really bad for Messi. They were heckling his family out there. Somehow he seems to have bad luck in these big national tournaments.
On soccer in the US I wouldn’t go too far with this. The men’s team is nowhere close to winning anything and without that promise it’s hard to keep generating this interest though the women’s team could keep putting up such numbers if it keeps performing this way.

For Big B and Salman a major part is coming out of the TV earnings which hovers around 3-4 cr per episode !!
So Salman for a small fun chit chat with Big Boss contestant during weekends commanded a cool 120 cr or something for the season.

I think its something to do with corporate vs individual tax laws in the country. I think Red Chillies is very active now and must be having much better allocation of incoming in the balance sheet while filing taxes than what srk would do on individual filing.
Individual taxes are normally very high and straight out with not much play and fewer deductions allowed. I don’t see any other reason because srk’s greed for money is well documented and he would not rest peacefully if he were to earn less than anyone else out there in Bollywood.

It was more disheartening because a win at major international final has eluded him again. Hope they are more kind to his impact and legacy when he is finally done because I have never seen a more humble wizard in soccer field esp when it comes to dribbling the ball and making a play. It is so pleasant to simply watch him play in this power play display of new soccer world.
I still feel if Di Maria wasn’t injured and if he were to play the world cup final against Germany, they would come out victorious. They were playing so well in tandem at that time.

Lots of (perhaps all) teams who lose wc finals have there “if…” lists esp against Germany
There’s something about the Germanic machinisation that makes people underestimate their class

Kollywood is now abuzz with speculations about Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film.
If names of Mammootty and Dhanush as lead actors in the ace filmmaker’s project were doing the rounds earlier, latest reports suggest that Mani Ratnam has zeroed in on his “OK Kanmani” hero Dulquer Salmaan, besides Karthi and Shruti Haasan, as lead artists for his next flick.
There were also rumours that Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film will be bilingual, in Tamil and Malayalam, but now it appears it will be a Tamil flick, with both Karthi and Dulquer sharing screen space together.
AR Rahman, who has composed for many Mani Rathnam films, will be the composer for this movie also.
Karthi had started his film career as an assistant director in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil-Hindi thriller film “Aayutha Ezhuthu”, which starred Suriya, Madhavan and Siddharth.
Apparently, the young actor was offered to play a role in the 2004 hit movie, but denied and chose to be part of the directorial team.
Karthi, who had a series of flops, had recently made a huge comeback with his performances in “Komban” and “Madras”.
Meanwhile Dulquer’s last release was Mani Ratnam’s “OK Kanmani” and the actor had managed to impress Tamil audience with his looks and performance.
