  1. Another Dull Week Before First Event Film Bajrangi Bhaijaan

    Box Office India Trade Network

It will probably be another dull week at the box office before Bajrangi Bhaijaan next week, the first event film of the the year. This week will see the release of Baahubali – the Beginning (dubbed), I Love NY, Mere Genie Uncle and Thoda Luft Thoda Ishq and the Hindi films have such low awareness that it will be the dubbed film that will probably open best.

Baahubali – The Beginning is big budget Telugu film and can do some business in Maharashtra which will mean best collections in Mumbai circuit but rest of India does not really come for dubbed films

This can be seen by the fact that Delhi city has a better advance for the Telugu version than the Hindi version. The will act as a filler at some centers before the second half of the year really starts for the Hindi film industry with the release of Bajrang Bhaijaan. The only dubbed South Indian films that have worked in Hindi markets are Hindustani and Bombay and that was way back in the 90’s.

No storyteller comes close to what SS Rajamouli envisions and executes on screen. #Baahubali is truly a M-A-S-T-E-R-P-I-E-C-E.

Every frame, every sequence of #Baahubali is a marvel. Can easily be compared to the best of Hollywood. Has the stamp of a genius.

The grandiose sets, VFX, sound, edit, cinematography… most importantly, the watertight screenplay of #Baahubali is beyond fantastic.

#Baahubali casting just perfect. Every actor shines in their respective parts. Prabhas and Rana, special mention for you both. Outstanding!

A film like #Baahubali makes you proud. An Indian filmmaker dared to dream and the results are for all to see. We take a giant leap.

  5. Baahubali is getting superb reviews across the board even by the most “literate” of critics (you would otherwise expect someone like Ramnath to be harsher on Masala films or films having those elements)-

Film review: ‘Baahubali’ is a triumph of size, scale and spectacle
SS Rajamouli’s eye-popping period spectacle raises the bar for the Indian action movie by several notches.

    Nandini Ramnath · Today · 08:45 am

    http://scroll.in/article/740092/film-review-baahubali-is-a-triumph-of-size-scale-and-spectacle

“…Shiva’s repeated and eye-popping attempts to tame the waterfall mirror Rajamouli’s determination to deliver the spectacle to beat all spectacles. Valour, virility, vendetta, maternal resolve, operatic emotion, rebellion and conquest are all packed into the inaugural minutes, and they eventually add up to a ravishing feast mounted on a scale that has rarely been seen on the Indian screen. …’

“… Yet, Rajamouli’s emphasis on spectacle and grandiloquence doesn’t blind him to the necessity of moving the story along. A flashback reveals the treachery that denied Baahubali his rightful place on Mahishmati’s throne and includes a bloody battle sequence that establishes the filmmaking crew’s complete absorption of Hollywood movies, especially Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies. Stepping in for the LOTR’s Orcs are dark-skinned and bestial rebels, led by a one-eyed scruffy leader who, in a less conventional celebration of the prowess of the martial race, might have been a useful ally rather than a disposable enemy.

Baahubali doesn’t tinker with the basic template and the clichés of the warrior epic genre, and the parallels drawn between Baahubali and the god Shiva redundantly underline his decidedly non-mortal physical strengths. The movie venerates machismo, which is present even in its spitfire female characters, but it has ample reserves of singular imagination and visual splendour. Beautifully designed by Sabu Cyril and impressively shot by KK Senthil Kumar, the movie underscores Rajamouli’s proven ability to deliver a grandiloquent experience. The sprawling cast falls in perfect line with the filmmaker’s ambitions, and he trumps his track record of delivering smart popular entertainment through such films as Magadheera and Eega. Every frame pulsates with the passion of a filmmaker openly staking his claim as the most adventurous soul travelling through mainstream cinema at the moment.”

  6. Baahubali review: SS Rajamouli’s fantasy film with great battle scenes and hunky heroes is just epic

    http://www.firstpost.com/bollywood/baahubali-review-great-battle-scenes-hunky-heroes-ss-rajamoulis-fantasy-film-is-just-epic-2335958.html

“…Director SS Rajamouli has done some remarkable things with this monumental film, which is the first of a two-part tale. One, he’s made a film that actually gets better after intermission. Two, he’s given us a new epic with Baahubali. Yes, the cast is dressed like characters in Amar Chitra Katha, but this isn’t a reinterpretation of Mahabharata or a retelling of Ramayana. V. Vijayendra Prasad has written a whole new and original epic that doesn’t borrow too obviously from our favourite Hindu epics. Here, we see (mostly) new gods and new heroes who are not bland replicas of mythological heroes. …”

“…As might be evident, the first half of Baahubali isn’t exactly riveting. It teeters between funny, spectacular and tragic, depending upon how keen-eyed the viewer is and how much acting is required of the cast. You can tell the shooting has spread over the better part of two years because the continuity is inconsistent. For instance, Shiva has armpit hair in one shot and in the next second, he’s been depilated comprehensively.

However, Rajamouli is hoping what his VFX team has dreamed up as the imaginary terrain of Baahubali will blind the viewer to the film’s weaknesses and to a large extent, this tactic works. The CGI landscape, like the waterfalls and the rather magnificent Mahishmati, are spectacular. There are a few laughable spots, but they are few and far between. While Baahubali doesn’t feel as real as Middle Earth, it is a beautifully-imagined fantasy landscape that has been rendered in impressive detail, particularly by Indian standards. …”

“…It’s post-intermission that Baahubali really comes into its own. Shiva is told the story of his father, Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas in a double role), and his cousin, Bhallala Deva. They are princes in the royal family of Mahishmati, which faces multiple crises. Chaos is avoided when Bhallala’s formidable mother Sivagami (Ramya Krishan) takes charge. However, when a murderous army lands up at Mahismati’s borders, it is time for the two princes to take centre stage and they do so in a fantastically choreographed battle that unfurls over more than 30 minutes.

This battle is Rajamouli’s tour de force. It’s elaborate, well-choreographed and has some breathtaking moments. Prabhas and Dagubatti are both in their elements as the warriors who approach warfare in two distinctive styles. The outcome of the battle is no surprise, but there are enough clever tactics and twists to keep the audience hooked. The biggest surprise, however, lies in the film’s final shot, which gives you a glimpse into the sequel that will come out next year. And it’s good enough to make you wish 2016 was here already.

Till then, stock up on popcorn and be ready to unleash your catcalls for Baahubali. …”

  7. An overwhelmingly positive international review by TWITCH-

Review: SS Rajamouli’s BAAHUBALI – THE BEGINNING Is A World Class Epic

    J Hurtado, Contributing Writer

    http://twitchfilm.com/2015/07/review-ss-rajamoulis-baahubali—the-beginning-is-a-world-class-epic.html

“The word epic gets thrown around a lot these days. Thanks to meme culture, the word has been misused and overused so often that it has lost much of its meaning. However, for a film experience like S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali – The Beginning, there is no more appropriate term. This film, the first of two planned features, does nothing by half measures. Every aspect of Baahubali – The Beginning is oversized, however, where that may bloat some films with less judicious aspirations, Rajamouli makes sure that every moment counts, and I’ve never seen a two-and-a-half hour film with so many clearly memorable moments.

Along the way, Shivudu encounters strange new worlds about which he’s only dreamed, as well as romance, action, and revenge. While Baahubali – The Beginning hews fairly tight to the established and expected structure of Indian masala filmmaking, Rajamouli’s singular talent is making these concepts and tropes which are identifiably Indian, and even specifically South Indian, and molding them to fit his own vision, which is light years broader. The Tollywood veteran will see all of the tropes and definitive markers of that industry’s patterns, but the newbie will look right past the formula to the meat of the film, which is an exceptionally tricky balancing act that no Telugu filmmaker has yet mastered. None other than Rajamouli. …”

“… Even though Baahubali – The Beginning is clearly a product of a career that has been building to this point, it’s important to note that the film connects with its audience on a more visceral level. 99% of you will not have seen Magadheera or Yamadonga, but you will have seen something like John Milius’s Conan the Barbarian, Ron Howard’s Willow, John Woo’s Red Cliff, or Peter Jackson’s adaptations of Tolkien. These are the kinds of worlds that Rajamouli’s film inhabits. Whereas the fictional settings of those English language films are mostly identifiable as medieval Europe, Rajamouli sets his film during a similarly unnamed time period in what is identifiably India. Apart from the change in scenery and language, the films are more kin to each other than one might expect. We get the parental issues of Conan, the reluctant heroism and impish charm of Willow’s Val Kilmer, and the outsized scope and battle sequences of The Lord of the Rings or Red Cliff. However, with Baahubali – The Beginning, we get something more, a true heart and soul, rather than what is often empty manipulation.

While Baahubali – The Beginning may not match up to the adrenalin output of George Miller’s Mad Max Fury Road, it’s not entirely out of that ball park in several ways. Both films rely heavily on worlds constructed almost entirely within the minds of their creators, though Miller has had almost 35 years to build his and Rajamouli did it in two. Another truly impressive, and progressive, trait of both films is their treatment of women as not only action heroes, they are also widely seen and acknowledged as figures of authority. Granted, Tamannah as the warrior Avanthika, does fall for Shivudu even as she’s trying to kill him, the character of Anushka Shetty’s Devasena is more than able to strike fear into the hearts of her enemies and friends (when needed). No one will talk about this film as a feminist action spectacular with Prabhas in the lead, but it certainly puts a solid foot forward in that arena. …”

“…It isn’t only the structure of the film that works incredibly well, it’s also the execution, which could have been disastrous. With a film like this, on a scale never even attempted in Indian Cinema, the probability of spectacular failure in terms of technical execution should have been incredibly high. However, Rajamouli is one of India’s greatest trailblazers in terms of incorporating visual FX into his worlds in a photorealistic way. Tamil Cinema’s Shankar is a visual wiz, but his work is based on cartoonish exaggeration, Rajamouli wants it to feel real. It felt real enough in Eega that audiences around the world sympathized with a housefly. The FX in Baahubali – The Beginning are on the cusp of being on par with Hollywood’s finest, but here Rajamouli manages to use his FX to greater effect than Hollywood typically does.

Rajamouli’s reliance on FX is not to distract the audience, it is to augment the reality that he has created. Anything that he can build practically, he builds, we saw that in the behind the scenes gallery we posted back in May. When Rajamouli’s imagination extends beyond those earthly limits, he nudges the truth a bit with some help from his FX team. Is it always perfect? No, there are a few shots where the FX didn’t hold up 100%, but I certainly found myself more enamored with the story than wondering how they accomplished any particular shot in the film. Isn’t that what visual effects are designed to do, anyway, to disappear in service of the story? Mission accomplished.

What it all boils down to is that SS Rajamouli is a director with a heart as big as a house, and ambitions bigger than you can imagine. His films redefine what the scope of Indian Cinema can mean, both in terms of this kind of epic story as well as who the audience for this largely regional cinema is. Baahubali – The Beginning is a film for the child in everyone, the one who wants to believe in heroes and derring-do, and for the adult in everyone who wants to believe that they can be the hero of their own story, that they just need the right motivation. I’ve waited all summer for a great film, and Baahubali – The Beginning is the first film that feels to me like it hits all of those notes. When Hollywood comes knocking on Rajamouli’s door, don’t say I didn’t tell you first.”

  8. ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ Review: A Giddy Spectacle, If Somewhat Uneven

    Suprateek Chatterjee

    http://www.huffingtonpost.in/suprateek-chatterjee/baahubali-the-beginning-r_b_7767206.html?utm_hp_ref=india

“…Baahubali: The Beginning is a grand and largely impressive epic by Telugu film director S. S. Rajamouli. With budget estimates swinging wildly between Rs 170 crore and Rs 220 crore, it is rightly being touted as the most expensive Indian movie ever made. It is one of the first Indian films to make use of the costly Arri Alexa XT camera, now a staple in big-budget Hollywood productions, and utilised elaborate sets constructed in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City. …”

“…The film is heavily dependent on CGI, as trailers have also shown us, and one expects nothing but the best in this day and age. Here’s the unfiltered truth, though: if you’ve watched even three or four CGI-laden Hollywood blockbusters from the last decade or so, you will definitely find the special effects here occasionally sub-par.

It’s all a question of budgets, after all. For even the most expensive Indian movie ever made is, in Hollywood terms, a mere $40-odd million movie. For the sake of perspective, that’s still $15 million short of how much Richard Donner’s Superman had reportedly cost to make… back in 1978. Meanwhile, most special effects spectacles nowadays, such as Guardians Of The Galaxy or The Avengers, cost around $200 million or more to make. …”

“..But, holy hell, when they do get it right, it is absolutely stunning.

The film’s piece de resistance is a flashback sequence in its second half, which depicts stunning swordplay and massive battle scenes. What Rajamouli lacks in CGI firepower (which I’m sure he must be aware of), he makes up for with excellently staged set-pieces. The denouement of one particular sword-fighting sequence, shot in heavy rain, had the audience at its preview screening in Mumbai applauding breathlessly.

A significant part of the movie’s second half is taken up by a mighty war between Mahishmati and the army of warlord Kalakeya (Prabhakar), comparable to the Battle Of Helm’s Deep from The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (2002) in scale as well as in style. The shots are all familiar (visuals like the camera following an arrow right to its target have been done to death by now), but the execution is top-notch and the vision, immensely grand. A lesser filmmaker would’ve been overwhelmed by the canvas and allowed incoherence to seep in, but Rajamouli and editor K Venkateswara Rao do a fantastic job of allowing the viewer to understand what is happening even as they see how it is happening.

There is also a fair bit of inventiveness, such as a chariot fitted with mechanically-operated rotors designed to slice into enemies and a mace that operates along the lines of Go Go Yubari’s meteor hammer from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill movies, which makes this portion all the more memorable. …”

“…However, all said and done, Baahubali: The Beginning is a remarkable achievement. What Rajamouli has pulled off here, despite its flaws, is nothing short of a miracle, especially when you take into account India’s notoriously risk-averse filmmaking environment and when the film ends on a tantalising cliffhanger (paving the way for Baahubali: The Conclusion, due to release next year), once can’t help but applaud his singularly brave vision. As the cliché goes, a journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step, but it doesn’t really matter if that first step is shaky as long as it lands firmly and confidently.”

Film Review | Baahubali: The Beginning

      An impressively mounted by-the-numbers epic

      Uday Bhatia

      http://www.livemint.com/Leisure/fQJuEzczvg4KtO9VnnfjWK/Film-Review–Baahubali-The-Beginning.html

“…And though I’m generally wary of big-budget Indian action films—on the grounds that they’re mostly incompetent rip-offs of existing blockbusters—Baahubali does manage to convey its size and scale with a great amount of confidence. …”

“…A disappointingly by-the-numbers plot is set in motion when Shiva (Prabhas) meets Avantika (Tamannaah). She’s part of a group of rebel warriors who are trying to free their queen, Devasena (Anushka Shetty), who’s been imprisoned for 25 years by the evil Bhallala Dev (Rana Daggubati) and his father. Through a long flashback that takes up most of the second half of the film, it is revealed that Shiva is the son of prince Amarendra Baahubali (also Prabhas), who was in competition with Bhallala Deva for the throne. After helping defeat invading forces in an epic battle, Amarendra is named king. How he was subsequently killed, and how Shiva avenges him, we’ll only know when the second part of this film, Baahubali: The Conclusion, rolls around in 2016.

That Rajamouli knows his way around VFX was evident in Eega, but he negotiates the massive jump in scale well. Everything is designed for maximum impact—if there are bales of straws, you can be sure they’ll be set on fire so that a chariot can be driven through them. The vistas that unfold have a digitally enhanced grandeur that’s familiar from films such as Troy and Exodus: Gods and Kings, modern versions of the old sword and sandal epics. Bhallala Dev’s chariot even has a whirring scythe attached to it—a little visual tribute to Ben-Hur.

It’s not all good news. Prabhas is massive and muscled, but not very graceful; it’s not as much fun seeing him hurl himself around as the film thinks it is. The rest of the cast ranges from serviceable to flagrantly bad, though Sathyaraj has a nice turn as a brave but conflicted warrior. A huge drawback of the film is its writing. The dialogue in the Hindi dubbed version is terribly stilted; I don’t know what Prabhas says in the Telugu version, but in this one he tells Tamannaah: “You are a girl. I am a boy. I have come here to love you.” (Not very smooth, but infinitely better than placing a snake on her so that he can draw on her shoulder. Don’t ask.) Baahubali could also have done with some humour. The best joke arrived at half-time and wasn’t even part of the movie. “Baahubali: The Intermission”, the intertitle read. “

Latest reports coming in suggest that Baahubali has received phenomenal response in the overseas market. If a tweet by a person tracking the entertainment industry is anything to go by, the premiere show itself has raked in over $1million which is extraordinary for any movie.

So the tickets are about double the price of a normal movie but even taking this into account the 1st day collections, a working day Thursday, are amazing.

Moreover this movie is only about special effect and some out of ordinary characters and battle sequence. All reviewers gave thumbs down to story and narration also its length. All other movies in same theatres are $8 atleast in morning shows. This is too greed and hype. Telugu and tamil industry is like this and with kjo involvement with this u can expect more greed and hype added to it. In a week it will be available online for free. Same deserve these khans movie. Never watch khans movie and these hyped tamil telugu superstars hyped movie. Always ridiculous price and underwhelming experience makes cost look non worthy of sitting 3 hrs in theatre.

I am just talking about its hindi version.

    • Yes, but that’s like saying Endhiran (Robot)’s Hindi version was a flop! So not sure if this “fact” has any meaning. No one expects Baahubali to be a blockbuster in Bombay, that’s simply impossible (even Rajni wouldn’t be able to get a hit in Bombay. But that’s not a fair expectation and not only because Baahubali (and for that matter Endhiran though atleast this has Aishwarya who is a Bollywood star)hasn’t been made in Hindi (it has simply been dubbed in the language). Had this been made in Hindi, say something like Vishwaroopam, I could still understand the commercial expectations (more so in case of a Kamal Haasan or a Rajni film because they have done Hindi films in the past so atleast Bombay cinema “knows” them. This isn’t the case with Rajamouli’s films).

Incidentally once you take the size of the respective markets into account, IMO one can safely say that a 100 crore grossing Tamil/Telugu film is equivalent to a 300 grosser of Bollywood

        • SS Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” has already hit the screens, but very few know what the director had in mind for its Hindi version.

According to a Bollywood Life report, Hrithik Roshan and John Abraham were being considered for Prabhas and Rana Dagggubati’s roles.

Apparently, Rajamouli had sent across the script of “Baahubali” asking for a narration but it didn’t work out as both the actors had tight schedules and didn’t have time for the story.

However, since the makers didn’t come forward admitting to have considered Hrithik and John for the lead roles; this can, at best, be considered as a speculation.

Meanwhile, predictions suggest “Baahubali” will rake in a massive amount of money at the box office on the opening day. Made on a massive budget of ₹250 crore, the Rajmouli directorial has been released in four languages, Tamil, Telegu, Hindi and Malayalam, and features Prabhas and Rana Daggubati in the lead roles.

The celebs and fans have been praising it on social media. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh even went on to tweet how people may call it a “box office blockbuster” now, it will eventually be dubbed as a classic.

  12. I Love NY and Baahubali (Hindi) opened to a poor response with the long delayed I Love NY having 5-10% occupancies and the dubbed Baahubali at 15-20%. The release of Baahubali is also wider so despite it being a dubbed film it should easily record better collections.

The openings are low so not much can be expected from these films unless word of mouth is very strong. This will be tough for I Love NY as it’s a stale film while the dubbed factor will go against Baahubali.

The Telegu version of Baahubali opened better be it Delhi, Gurgaon or Mumbai, though limited screenings the occupancies were over 50%, even house full at places. The Hollywood release Minions had a decent start in 3D in the metros.

Baahubali will do well on saturday and sunday as family audience may flock with their kids.

And this is heights of silliness-

“The release of Baahubali is also wider so despite it being a dubbed film it should easily record better collections.”-

Yes, the screen count of Baahubali is bigger?! So does that mean that it should be compared with the opening of a Bollywood film in Bombay! Isn’t Kangana (who is starring in I Love NY…I know that this one has ben lying in the cans for ages, but it doesn’t change te fact that Kangana is hot now and BOI is going on and on with their spiel that she is giving Khans sleepless nights and what not) a far bigger star in Bombay than Prabhas and Rana).

Again no one is expecting Baahubali to do a 100 cr in Bombay. But if it does 50 here (as Krish expects), that would be equal to a Bollywood film doing 150-200 cr.

Fast & Furious has grossed 95 crore nett, Jurrasic World will go close to 85 crore nett and The Avengers – Age Of Ultron grossed 75 crore nett.

Baahubali movie review: S S Rajamouli’s film is simply spectacular

‘Baahubali’ movie review: SS Rajamouli’s film holds out many promises: of adventure and romance, love and betrayal, valour and weakness. And delivers magnificently on each of them.

Written by Shubhra Gupta | New Delhi |

    http://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/movie-review/baahubali-movie-review-s-s-rajamouli/

“Right from its opening frames, ‘Baahubali’ holds out many promises: of adventure and romance, love and betrayal, valour and weakness. And it delivers magnificently on each of them. This is full-tilt ,fully-assured filmmaking of a very high order. ‘Baahubali’ is simply spectacular.

Many films have scale and spectacle. ‘Baahubali’ also has a story. And enough hooks to be keep us engrossed through its close to two-and-a-half hours of running time. You can see S S Rajamouli’s varied influences in places : James Cameron-like dreamy vistas of hill, waterfall and greenery, Ang Lee’s flying-through-the-air-acrobatics, Peter Jackson’s stretching-out-for-miles crowded battlefields, J R R Tolkien’s plug-ugly trolls who talk in guttural tongues, many characters and situations from Mahabharat and Ramayan. And, in a Bollywood hat-tip, to the long-suffering mother in ‘Karan Arjun’!

But Rajamouli makes sure that the references do not overwhelm his epic, which has a beleaguered kingdom, kings and queens, faithful slaves, jealous brothers, beautiful women and strong men. And the strongest of them, ‘Baahubali’, which means, literally, ‘strong of arm’. …”

“…Rajamouli doesn’t bother giving us a date for the film. It is closest to a ‘period’, part myth, part everything else. Which is a good thing because we don’t go looking for parity in costume and architecture. It is set in the director’s own imagination, and what a wonderful thing that is, full of gorgeous visuals (just those waterfalls make you feel like you’ve been drenched), and a story-telling technique that eschews unnecessary sophistication just for the sake of it, but is robustly elegant all the same, and keeps things ticking space. …”

“Prabhas plays it just right: his Baahubali has a sprightly ‘moochh’, and is mightily muscular. So is Daggubati, whose spread of shoulder and chest is even more so. The women step in to be fiery and authoritative, as well as, sigh, submissive. When Ramya thunders, she is quite something; Tamannaah displays a mean kick before simpering, and the ladies step aside to let the men, and ‘maar-dhaad’, occupy centre-stage.

I have to say that I dread long-drawn skirmishes between armour-clad armies (having suffered through Jackson’s never-ending battles) because they turn so turgid and dull so fast, but the battle-scenes in ‘Baahubali’ are completely engrossing. …”

“With ‘Baahubali’, Rajamouli has combined his gifts, of staying firmly in the past, and filling it with heightened drama and colour-drenched visuals.

I can’t wait for the second part, which, we are told, will be out in 2016.”

  20. Rangan’s superb piece on the film-

    Baahubali…A triumph of imagination

“…Baahubali, seen as just a story, is as old as the hill that Sivu (Prabhas) wants to climb. The film takes us back to an era of palace intrigues and deliverer myths, when royals spoke formal Tamil (“Mudiyai mudippavan mudi”) and commoners a more colloquial tongue. It’s the kind of cheerfully manipulative film where, after a war, a wounded man raises himself painfully on a stick as he cheers the newly crowned king. But Rajamouli makes us feel we’ve never seen anything like it. It’s part AP Nagarajan. It’s part Cecil B DeMille. Even Tolkien is in here somewhere. Along with a kitchen sink full of masala tropes: the long-suffering mother, brothers-turned-enemies, flashbacks and double roles. All updated with six-pack abs, computer-generated effects and eye-popping visuals. (Cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar and production designer Sabu Cyril are practically co-directors.)…”

“…One of Rajamouli’s achievements is that he makes us buy Tamannaah as this warrior. For once, her face shows character. And the mandatory love scenes are delightfully reimagined. There’s a bit that has to do with underwater calligraphy. And later, we see the classic taming-of-the-shrew construct depicted through choreography. Of course, there’s also a song sequence where the camera lights lovingly on Tamannaah’s navel. Some conventions are sacrosanct – you don’t mess around with them even if you’re SS Rajamouli. …”

“…Then again, one way to experience Baahubali is to simply block out the sound (Maragatha Mani’s tunes aren’t very memorable) and imagine you’re watching the most spectacular silent movie of all time. In the midst of filmmakers who think they’re giving us spectacle by going to virgin foreign locations and shooting mountains and flowers, Rajamouli gives us more.. and more. This isn’t just about grandeur in visuals. It’s about grandeur in ideas. If DeMille’s saviour, in The Ten Commandments, was transported in a basket as a baby, Rajamouli has the child held aloft by a hand amidst swirling waters. There’s a superb romantic scene whose centrepiece is a snake twined around an arrow. I laughed out loud at the sheer audacity on display. Rajamouli proves that it’s possible to reinvent even the “TASMAC song” – here, the dancers emerge from a pyramid of ropes, as alcohol flows from pitchers overhead. But the best sight of all is that of a filmmaker not, for a second, taking his audience for granted.”

I Love NY had poor first day grossing around 40-50 lakhs nett. The film does not have much of a chance even if was to show big growth on Saturday.

Baahubali (hindi) managed to do decent business in Mumbai, CP Berar and CI but North and East India were dull. The first day collections were around 4.25 crore nett which is the highest for dubbed film from South India. But its the usual trend for dubbed films where Mumbai and Central India give them a chance compared to other circuits.

The collections in Mumbai were 2 crore nett plus while Delhi / UP was just 25% of Mumbai at 55 lakhs nett. A lot will depend if it can show good growth on Saturday but even if it was not it will still turn out to be a good one week filler before Bajrangi Bhaijaan especially in Mumbai CP Berar and CI.

The Punjabi film Hero Naam Yard Rakhi fared poorly grossing 55 lakhs nett all India.

Because of course they maximize their audience in the South while Hindi cinema shrinks it by way of pricing them out or not producing those kinds of genres or both. Even when masala is attempted it is extremely poor for the most part.

Basically the whole industry and stars were promoting this and requesting their fans to watch this movie as there is no way this could recover the costs only if regular star fans watch it make it hit. The whole industry wants this to work as it will elevate Telugu film industry’s standards and will put it on Indian map.

  29. First True Epic of It’s Genre in Indian Film History!

I was quite upset with the proceedings in the first half of the movie, as I found the romantic track disturbing, as I felt the story could have been properly developed, but yet the second half kicks in how! A rare movie where the second half stills the show, and makes the vunerable first half acceptable.

This is a master piece and indeed embarrassing for the Hindi Film Industry as they can’t make such an epic! The vision and imagination of SS Rajamouli are on full display, I had seen few flicks of this guy, but this movie has made his fan. He is one the most interesting directors around in Indian Film Industry Today.

The quality of the special effects never makes you feel, you are watching an Indian flick, you feel that you are watching an International Movie. Only weak point I feel is the main lead Prabhu who plays BahuBali couldnt do proper justice to his role, or did i felt that because i saw the dubbed version! Because places where you see him like leading the warriors or standing among them, he doesn’t inspire much confidence as a war lord.

Tamanaah, I had thought would be super pretty and beautiful, is what I expected, like a barbie doll, but surprised me with her warrior character! Rana Dugbatti is good in villain avatar, and special praise for Ramya it was good to see her after such a long time!

The opening portion of the movie, regarding rock climbing, the battle, etc have a stamp of a visionary and imaginative director. The War scenes which could have been boring, have been interestingly created so that we get the hang of the war, and it showed certain tactics and strategy, so it was far more interesting that any battle scenes I have scene lately!

The only disappointing thing overall I could say was why didn’t AR Rahman composed the music, the project deserved his world class music!!

BahuBali is an experience one shouldnt miss, makes one proud for Indian Films and it’s imagination and exploration of such subjects. The Hindi film industry which has produced duds like Asoka, Veer, etc needs to introspect! Though I liked Veer, but it’s nothing infront of this epic!

Go for Bahubali! 3.5/5 Stars. Two Thumbs up!

ps: I would have 4 or 4.5 but for the lead actor which I feel can be upgraded!

This is true. This is a real masterpiece. Rajamouli is the best director with vision and imagination in India. 100 years of Indian cinema didn’t produce a Masterpiece like this. Undue credits were given to directors with regional and linguistic backgrounds.
As for as Prabhas is concerned you will understand his intensity if you understand the language. He is in top 3 in Telugu movies.
As for as Rahaman music for this film is concerned, I guess I may be a bit harsh, but Rahaman has come down from his peak and now he is as good as any other. His best days were in 90s. Even Slumdog Millionaire music does not deserve Oscar or National award.(It is sheer Geopolitics that Slumdog and Rahaman got Oscar as that is the way wounded Indian psyche was soothed by Western appeasement by way of Money, Awards, Power right after 26/11 Mumbai attacks.) Recent Rahaman’s films have less than average music. Every indian should be proud of Bahubali as Rajamouli has shown what an Indian could do provided right freedom and proper investment is guaranteed.

Some postings after release of Bahubali in other sites reflect parochial screwed up mentality of we Indians be it south or north. Some movies which can be rated as B-grade were pumped to orgasmic levels and volumes of data was invested where as for this movie they are trying to pull it down. Films like Ek Tha Tiger, Robot, I, Raavan, Happy New Year, Chennai Express, PK, Jai Ho, Linga, Ra One, My Name is Khan and Talaash are some of the average or even less than average fares that can aptly be thrown in to dustbin of Indian Movie History.

I guess the myopic mental bloc of Indian linguistic, regional and religious mind can not accept the true worth of an individual or product. That is the reason why India is where it is and we Indians are what we are : Morons.

Qua Prabhas, that is what i thought. Still cant make comment till i learn telugu!

SS Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali’ Could be a Threat for Salman Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’?

SS Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” has collected ₹100 crore at the box office in just two days, and will continue its strong run, thanks to positive word-of-mouth. However, will this affect Salman Khan’s “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, which is scheduled for release on 17 July?

An executive of a multiplex chain opined how the Kabir Khan directorial might not enjoy the number of screens the makers were expecting to occupy as the Prabhas starrer has been minting phenomenal money, both in India and worldwide.

“I am not saying that a Salman-starrer needs to feel threatened by any film, no matter how big a hit. But the fact is Baahubali is showing signs of becoming a much bigger hit than expected. It’s bound to affect Bajrangi Bhaijaan. It is likely that Bajrangi may not get the number of screens and theatres that it was expected to. Several theatres would rather continue with Baahubali. A certified blockbuster is any day a safer bet than a potential blockbuster,” Deccan Chronicle quoted the executive as saying.

In other news, “Baahubali – the Beginning” has grossed ₹135 crore in just two days at the worldwide box-office in two days. This is massive as the magnum opus has now crushed records held by Bollywood’s best. Made on a lavish budget of ₹250 crore, the film has successfully overtaken benchmarks formed by Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan among others.

    • I think media should stop reporting Bahubali as 250crore movie. That budget is actually for 2 parts and 1st part could be half of it around 125 crores or less which doesn’t make it the most expensive movie in India. On hindsight, the actual budget announced is around 220crores for both parts.

      Like

      • Oh, that makes the accomplishment even more praise worthy.

If they have made this movie at 120 crores, then it raises even more questions why cant Hindi film industry make such epic!

Or is that we are only capable of expensive failures like Ra.one, Asoka, Love Story 2050, etc!

The list from wiki of the most expensive movies:

        (1) Baahubali Telugu ₹250 crore (US$40 million)
        (2) Enthiran Tamil ₹132 crore (US$21 million)
        (3) Ra.One Hindi ₹125 crore (US$20 million)
        (4) Dhoom 3 Hindi ₹125 crore (US$20 million)
        (5) Kochadaiiyaan Tamil ₹125 crore (US$20 million)
        (6) Puli Tamil ₹120 crore (US$19 million)
        (7) Krrish 3 Hindi ₹115 crore (US$18 million)
        (8) I Tamil ₹100 crore (US$16 million)
        (9) Vishwaroopam Tamil ₹95 crore (US$15 million)
        (10) Kaththi Tamil ₹90 crore (US$14 million)

        It interestingly shows,
        a) it has only 3 entries for Hindi movies! Out of which 2 are failures or average, depending on perspective.

        b) Also all 3 movies have done nothing pathbreaking or memorable, in terms of images, effect, storyline!

        c) There are 5 Tamil movies! Out of which I am aware of only Robot, I and Vishwaroopam, wherein I found all three quite novel and interesting in their concept and execution.

        d) Only 1 telugu film, which interesting is the most expensive movie made. But even if the budget is for two parts, and one part would cost around 110 -120 crores, still it would be 6th or 7th most expensive movie made and it yet it has beaten the Tamil and Hindi ones. It says more about Rajamouli than Telugu Industry I believe, yet it’s quite interesting to reflect.

All in all Hindi movie makes don’t make proper use of the big budget in terms of story, visualisation experience and effect. That is my prima facie conclusion from the wiki table!

Real cinema fans don’t compare. There are so many genres of cinema and Baahubali is obviously a spectacular. Good for this film, but I wish other successful films and filmmakers were not dismissed. I am not a huge fan of spectaculars, preferring smaller more intimate films or a straightforward romcom or drama. Still, congrats to Baahubali team.

  34. Unlike most critics I think the first half of Baahubali utterly delightful and is an intrinsic component of Rajamouli’s intended narrative structure. After all what does the second half have? A brilliantly conceived and executed war scene. But at the end of the day, it is just a single note – war. That would be okay in the Hollywood aesthetics but we Indians do it differently. I mean Mahabharat is nt just the war. The actual war is such a small part of Mahabharata. The epic is an epic, because it is about human relationship – relationship between man and woman, between parents and child, between brothers, between guru and shishya – , because it is about morality and ethics, because it is about statecraft and politics. This is how Mahabharata is different from Illiad and Odyssey. Unlike the latter, Mahabharata is not just about heroes – Draupadi, Kunti, Gandhari…they too add texture to its vast canvas. Unlike Western epics and Hollywood, women play a part in war tales of Bollywood and the Indian epics. Without the romance between Baahubali and Avantika it would be a dry Hollywood-style film. That’s the difference betweena China Gate and Sholay —China Gate is a none-note film, Sholay is a symphony.

And the romance in Baahubali is so refreshing. The underwater scene where Baahubali etches the signature morif on Avantika’s wrist while fish nibble at Avantika’s fingers is magical…rivalling Mughal-e-Azam’s feature scene is delicate eroticism. The playful antic with the snake saves Baahubali from being just a boring warrior, and Avantika’s response establishes her gritty character. I like the second half…after all the film was building upto that climax…and the production design innovations are very much in the lane of Mad Max – Fury Road…but I think the first half was the perfect launch pad fir this relentless climax and absolutely needed to balance the war preoccupation of the second half. In fact it is this Indianness that differentiates Rajamouli from so many tech-savvy filmmakers in Bollywood who try to mount lavish action films. Even in a cleverly written revenge saga like Eega, Rajamouli manages to craft some ethereal moments of delicate romance involving the fly and the girl. That is what brings tears to your eyes. An in Indian creative canon, it is not art if it cannot bring a tear to your eyes. The first part of Baahubali hasn’t done it, I hope the second half does, if it hopes to live on in the collective memory as a classic.

I wish he’d win another Wimbledon. He keeps coming close each time. And I think this also creates the illusion that it’s possible to win it all. Once again he’s great enough to be able to get this deep even when he’s not at his peak. On the other hand he’s not won a Grand Slam in 3 years. It doesn’t get easier. The thing is at this stage of his career Federer has to be perfect throughout a game. At least when facing the top ranked player. That’s a high bar for anyone. Also his serve let him down quite a bit today but this has again not been unusual for him in these last few years. Otherwise I’d certainly love to see him win one more of these somehow.

Even among the greats there are differences of temperament. Sampras even when he was off-peak could keep pulling it off at Wimbledon. In fact for a while he wasn’t winning anywhere else. His devastating serve never quite deserted him. And again he was never the kind of player who was determined to win every event out there. Federer has been. And so his ‘off-peak’ period is probably a bit different than that of Sampras. The latter wasn’t psychologically as burnt out perhaps but also not physically. In any case he never had the Agassi kind of physical regimen. Obviously it’s about the competition as well. Federer had Nadal who was a great in his own right, now Djokovic has himself won nine, three out of which are Wimbledon titles. Sampras I don;t think ever had a serious competitor on grass (one year he lost to Krajicek in a much rain interrupted quarter or he could easily have had 7 here.. but after this he had another three titles). The larger point I;m trying to make is that Sampras was much less likely to get to a final off-peak than Federer, on the other hand he was still more likely to win it all than Federer in the same period. Again my own sense about this is that the serve helped bail out Sampras a lot of times. Obviously he was one of the greats in any case but it didn’t hurt to have that serve!

Finally, Sampras was not unusual in that players at the ‘greatest’ level are often not the most extraordinarily driven. The players just below this often are. It’s in this sense rare to get a Federer or a Sachin. Usually such a player is great enough to have an awesome career but there’s always the sense that with more will even greater records might have been achieved. And so with Sampras you don’t get the sense that he could have added nothing to his record. With Federer you know that he’s really tried as hard as he possibly could at every point.

Djokovic played the bigger points better and that was the difference. If the match went long, Federer had no hope and ideally he needed to take the 1st set and probably the second. That both went to tie breakers against the best player just shows how good Federer “was” not “is” – he is definitely not fitter or better today than 10 years ago so to take Djokovic close for those first 2 was great.

But basically Federer can only hang with Djokovic for that long. 4 or 5 sets and Djokovic is such a beast that he will win.

The other fatigue that has set into Federer’s game (and this is not recent, I’d say it started in 2008 against Nadal at Wimbledon) is the major points. He just seems to lose most of the crucial moments in the match. Whereas Djokovic and Nadal especially against him seem to rise in those moments. It makes all the difference. Novak seemed to go up a gear when down 30-40 or when Federer won the 2nd set. He just shifts that momentum back so quickly it feels like he is playing within himself (scary thought).

Federer has been mentally bruised for a few years now. The recognition at 26 years old, that Nadal came and then Djokovic must have really hurt. He would have like me, thought he was clear to win 20 slams.

But this is where I think he is a class apart. He cried in 08, was visibly annoyed, but every loss since I think he acknowledges his place as the greatest and it can’t last forever. For a man so use to winning, he handles all these losses pretty well! He is pretty together. He had 5-6 years at the top and then has experienced 5-6 years chasing the tails of Nadal and Djokovic – but in that time retaining a pretty high standard throughout.

Djokovic – man this guy is a beast. What a player. I think the Federer of 04-09 would have the measure of him – but must be said this generation of tennis has produced 3 outstanding players – they’ve rattled off 40 slam wins between them already! The frightening thing is Novak is not done. Nadal practically is, Federer too! So Novak has a clear run for 2-3 years one would thing. Murray seems to have peaked by winning Wimbledon so it has hard to see who will challenge Novak.

Federer should retire at the end of the Aussie open. He has the game to go deep in US and Aussie – but another gruelling French/Wimbledon – don’t think he needs to go through it. That he will end the year still the #2 at his age and with what Nadal and Novak have thrown at him for years now – he’s beat in big matchplay but he has retained his greatest by staying close.

        • hard to disagree with anything here.. but yeah Djokovic assuming no clear competition emerging from somewhere could get to 15 himself. On Federer he should certainly avoid the French. Really tough. On grass it’s a tougher call in the sense that one would expect him to have it a bit easier here in decline inasmuch as he’s so strong on this surface (this was certainly the case for Sampras). But he’s really been stretched here the last few years.

Obviously happy to see the Indian win but let’s say I’ve always had a genetic defect and have been lacking in this (or any sort) of patriotic fervor! I do of course support the national team in cricket but it’s quite often in a ‘club’ sense or tied to the quality of the team or the players on it and so on. Of course people are crazily loyal to clubs too, as much as national teams. that’s another matter.

And I am shocked how Serena continues to dominate. She won her first 16 years ago!!! I am shocked that tennis coaches, young female tennis players back then have not developed the kind of power game she has! I mean she has been around for 16 years and no one comes close.

        • And it’s quite hilarious to see how folks are going ga-ga over collections when the ratio is clearly 2:1 when it comes to ticket prices in the US at least! While everybody is quite happy attacking BOI over its ‘subdued’ reporting for BAHUBALI, they are conveniently forgetting this jacked up price! 24$ is un-heard of! Warner Bros might be cursing themselves as to why the studios in US don’t jack up prices for the super-hero ventures..

Have to give it to the Hindi film industry. NEVER, ever have I seen them — till now at least — jack up the prices so vulgarly for their movies, whether they star the 3 Khans or any other weekly superstar. I don’t think I paid extra even for RA1.

Another ridiculous thing that we as Indians tend to do is associate ‘patriotism’ to such projects. Making the ‘Telugu’ or Hindi film industry proud and all such shite. Such unnecessary shouts of patriotism clouds one’s judgement and programs one to ‘over-look’ deficiencies in the product. So if a LUNCHBOX comes out, the reviews try to make it ‘INDIA’S BEST’ shoving aside any — if any — deficiencies. I am just giving an example – not saying that LUNCHBOX was a below-average flick. [Hrithik Roshan and his cohorts tried to do the same with KRISSH 3.] Everything, from social-media posts to reviews to comments gets clouded here.

Yes, it is great that in the mold-infested Telgu film industry — an industry that considers one of its summits as a movie in which Chiranjeevi goes down doing a ‘veena’ step and in the sequel, comes up on those same legs [take that Nolan] — now has a genuine director interested in a fruitful marriage of the art and commerce. I am quite happy. Can we just stick it there and analyze or enjoy the product without our patriotic glasses on?

Yes, I too lose myself to such emotions. I did shed a tear when Rahman got an Oscar. But I was quite sure that he won it MORE for the geo-politics of America going through a recession in 2008 than the actual merits of the sound-track. He won the award on ‘topicality’ — being the right person at the RIGHT time and in the RIGHT place. Nothing more to it.

Baahubali Scores In Hindi – Near 100 Crore In All Formats
    Monday 13 July 2015 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Baahubali (Hindi) has done well over its first weekend grossing around 19.50 crore nett. More than than the weekend total its the trend on Saturday and Sunday that indicates that the film has found appreciation in some Hindi markets despite being a dubbed film from South India.

The business was very good in Mumbai circuit, CP Berar and CI. The other circuits also picked but due to low start the overall collections were on lower side as compared to the above circuits

The film has done record breaking business in its Telugu format grossing around 65 crore nett apprx across India. The all India collections of the film in all languages are around 98-100 crore nett which is on par with collections of Happy New Year including its Tamil and Telugu format. It is behind Dhoom 3 which was over 100 crore nett including Tamil and Telugu formats.

But Hindi films can be compared against Hindi films in nett collections as release patterns are same, comparing with other languages it has to be gross as taxes differ for different languages and regional films have tax benefits in their local states. So in real terms which is gross collections, Baahubali has the fourth biggest opening weekend ever in India after Dhoom 3, Happy New Year and PK which is no mean feat for a regional film though the huge expenditure and release (on all formats) is on par if not more than any big budget Hindi film

        • I wanted to but not only is it not playing at my end.. it’s not even playing in the city. The next option is a bit of a drive. Usually I only do this for Ratnam and/or Vikram (though ‘I’ played at my end). Clearly Bahubali should be checked out on the big screen but I’m not sure if I’m motivated enough to do the long drive. But also my instinct based on what I’ve seen in the trailers and so on is that I’d probably like it less than many others. This would take a bit long to explain. But the short answer is that there is a certain imagining of the Indian past in a near-fantasy format that I don’t completely trust and which I certainly find politically problematic. And this mix is something that even otherwise (and perhaps for different reasons) I am not entirely fond of in most Western contexts either (or for that matter East Asian ones.. read Chinese). Beyond this the fantastic is often that category which introduces the synthetic into history or better still history becomes a lot more plastic when viewed through such a contemporary technological prism (almost a kind of well-done video game at points). Both within the Chinese and Indian contexts (to stick to these two examples) this mix is then a space where all kinds of misplaced political dreams come about. It represents a kind of national assertion in cinematic terms at precise points in the nation-state’s history (what is unforgivable in this sense is Zhang Yimou selling out to this impulse after having made films that were just the opposite.. even if these films are nonetheless visually spectacular they’re animated by a very cheap politics). For me at any rate this isn’t the updating of 70s masala or something because that tradition was never nationalistic. Often quite the opposite. Similarly today one of the reasons I like Shankar is that though he too sometimes goes onto this terrain he makes something very different out of it. First off he’s a lot more tongue-in-cheek in this sense anyway but his films are more often than not about the interplay between a repressed past and ‘shining’ present and by the time the film ends these categories become somewhat blurred. As an aside notice how Shankar doesn’t quite please Hindi multiplex India as much as Rajamouli does! Sometimes this is true for their respective multiplex audiences as well. Anyway this has already gone on too long even if I’ll still insist that this is the short answer. Ha!

        • Satyam: What an insightful comment, thanks. But now that I have seen Baahubali, I can safely say that it doesn’t try to reimagine the Indian historical past in any sense. Infact it is a fantasy which is which is more or less divorced from any history. Rajamouli astutely doesn’t even specify the period in which the film is set. In any case in many ways it plays out like Mahabharat-lite (I don’t necessarily mean this disparagingly, just that plot heftiness, thematic richness or political commentary isn’t one of film’s goal). But it’s an excellent blockbuster and better than many such contemporary Hollywood efforts. Infact I will say the final 30 minutes war-sequence easily bests many such ones from the West. Incidentally The Guardian too in its piece (which Utkal has posted below) makes the your “video-game” point..actually you might want to make a separate post on The Guardian piece (they have praised it quite strongly) because they rarely do this sort of proper review for an Indian film.

          Like

  38. Mike Mccahill: The Guardian

Throughout, Rajamouli strikes a near-perfect balance between physicality and poetics. That waterfall becomes both mirror and measure of personal growth; one lingering slo-mo shot of a warrior’s chainmail in motion would stir a Zhang Yimou or Wong Kar-wai into renewed action. It’s merely cute when Baahubali plunges into a lake to paint the hand the dozing Avanthika has let slip into the waters, yet the action has a lovely pay-off: this impromptu tattoo is seen to complete one on the hero’s bicep during a later embrace. Unlike the committee scripting of, say, The Scorpion King, a lot of Baahubali appears to have been written in the stars.

And that’s finally the film’s appeal: it’s a throwback, the kind of peppy serial that would have graced the multiplex in the days before product-placement, billion-dollar PR campaigns and obligation 3D, when the sole components required for a blockbuster were a hero, a villain, a few fights, a few songs, and a happy ending. Rajamouli defers on the latter for now, but his skilful choreography of these elements shucks off any cynicism one might carry into Screen 1: wide-eyed and wondrous, his film could be a blockbuster reboot, or the first blockbuster ever made, a reinvigoration of archetypes that is always entertaining, and often thrilling, to behold. Roll on 2016.

  39. The BoI commentary is bullshit. We should be clear about what we are comparing, instead of losing ourw ay in terms. To strt with, let us ask why when talk of box office of Hindi films in general, why do we talk of net collections? Because we want to consider the money available for appropriation among exhibitors, disytributors and producers. Fair enough, Compare this figure for all movies PK, HNY, D3 and Baahubali, Gross is what ticket buyers spend on a film. If that is important, why not use gross figures while talking about Hindi films all the time? You cannot suddenly talk of grosses just to show a film down. In india trade circles, they seem to be concerned with the money avialble to exhibiotors + distributors + producers. That si the Net ( or whatever you call it) and that is the figure that should be compared.

    Like

    • I don’t think you need to compare gross for Hindi films as the entertainment tax is different but if you comparing the real figures to prove that one south Indian film is bigger hit than Hindi film, then mentioning tax is valid to give correct analysis. Like even on other sites, there was talk during its first day’s collections. Like below..

      *****************************************************

Note: The entertainment tax for Telugu films in Andhra Pradesh is 15%, whereas Hindi films pay more than 3 times the entertainment tax in a major state like Maharastra. So the ‘gross’ collections (including entertainment tax) of Happy New Year is still the highest, but when it comes to net collections (after deducting entertainment tax) and distributors share (after deducting exhibitors / theatre share), Baahubali is the highest single day grosser in the history of Indian Cinema.

The only thing here is that the film’s central conceit is a bit improbable (it invokes Hitchcock’s vertigo). The director had earlier made a very interesting redo of The Postman Always Rings Twice called “Jerichow”.

The best film from last year though is Timbuktu. A rare beast which is humanistic and yet is so political. And how beautifully has it been shot, especially the sequence involving the fisherman getting accidently killed. It is one of the most haunting films I have ever seen.

  45. Baahubali Hindi Holds Very Strong On Monday
    Monday 13 July 2015 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Baahubali (Hindi) has held firm on Monday with collections looking set to be close to its Friday numbers. The film should clock up 3.75 crore nett at least and may even go to 4 crore nett plus. The Telugu version has seen a drop in cities like Mumbai and Delhi as it opened to full houses on Friday.

The week can do business of around 33-35 crore nett. On a trend like this the film would normally go to 65-70 crore nett lifetime as Monday figures being close to Friday suggest a 40-45% drop in week two, maybe even stronger hold as its not a huge first week but Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a big hurdle.

The best business is coming in mass areas of CPCI, Maharashtra and Gujarat and Bajrangi Bhaijaan will replace it at all the major collecting single screens irrespective of collections. The film will get screenings in the big multiplexes but these are mainly in the big cities where the film is not as strong as is in the mass centers. The second week will be interesting as it may show the biggest drops in the areas where the film has found good appreciation.

Rajen ji what you are saying there is true for Tamil films but not Telugu film industry. If there is any film industry in India that is closest to transparency then it has to be Telugu film industry. The numbers aren’t randomly put by trade knowing people. There is a clear break down of what a film needs to earn in each territory in terms of distribution share, if there are any Share Guarantees, Minimum Guarantees or Hires (things you would never hear for a Bollywood film) involved in those collections. And the numbers reported largely for Telugu cinema is “Share” that ultimately matters to the distributors.

You get territory wise break up, district wise break up for each territory, center wise break up for each district and finally theater wise break up for each center. In fact this obsession with numbers is one of the biggest reasons why movie quality is so poor in Telugu cinema as the directors/producers make movies by these numbers. They know what the movie has to achieve and design a film and release it in way that they achieve that number. Once in a while comes a film that shatters these number games but as there are more star heroes they all go by a safe formula to get to safety in terms of these numbers and maintain there star status.

So basically with Baahubali you can get day wise, area wise breakup from day 1 till it ends its run. You will know eventually which areas it has got profits to its distributors and so on.

        • also while one industry might be better than another what are the odds that within the same country where every other industry has corrupt accounting practices and so on that there’s somehow one industry that’s absolutely honest, does the best accounting and somehow figures out how many tickets are sold and how much revenue is generated all over the state in the most professional sense? This is not about one person being honest but an entire industry. Finally in terms of the numbers that are reported on box office sites I do agree that they look much more professional than anything in Hindi cinema, certainly anything Tamil cinema offers but at the end of the day there’s still no verification system. Even in Hindi now a number of sites put up very precious numbers. They have all the trappings of seriousness except that once again there’s no verification. In the US for example every ticket sold can be accounted for as can the price it was sold for. So we don’t have to believe the studios or anyone else on the gross. Sure there is commentary on how much the film cost and so on, even that is mostly transparent but the point is that no one disputes the numbers once they’re out finally. Unless and until we have that sort of verification everything else is beside the point. One can certainly tell whether a film is a hit or not, specially when it’s one extreme or the other. But that’s just a ‘sense’ of things. It’s not an absolute accounting of the film. And when films are in the average/above average category things get far more murky. Put differently the reason the trade can play games is precisely because there’s no absolute verification against which their claims can be cross-checked. Tamil cinema though might be the absolute worst in this regard because things are very highly politicized there. Between political camps and politicized fan clubs it’s very hard to figure out what’s going on beyond the very basics.

Baahubali Hindi Close To Saturday Numbers On Monday
      Tuesday 14 July 2015 11.00 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Baahubali (hindi) had a fantastic hold on Monday with collections close to its Saturday number. The film went past its Friday figure as even multiplexes recorded better collections despite lower ticket rates. The first four day business of Baahubali (hindi) is as follows.

      Friday – 4,25,00,000
      Saturday -6,25,00,000
      Sunday – 9,00,00,000
      Monfday – 5,75,00,000

      TOTAL – 25,25,00,000

The film is now heading for a week of around 40 crore nett and normal cases lifetime would be looking at least double of week one for this type of trend but it remains to be seen how much it can add after the release of Bajrang Bhaijaan. The Telegu version did see a drop in business as the opening was extraordinary in that format.

  58. Rajkumar Hirani has just returned from the USA. The director, had a really long stay this time in the USA with Abhijat Joshi. Both the writers were busy writing the script for their next, which is Sanjay Dutt’s biopic.

After PK, Raju has got himself involved completely on his next project. This is the first time he would be working on a biopic. Although he has known Sanju for years and knows a lot about him, it’s difficult to depict the same on big screen.

Sanju played the main lead in Raju’s directorial debut Munnabhai MBBS, which became a huge hit. Both of them share a great bond in real life.
Said an insider, “Raju Hirani is extremely excited for Sanju’s biopic and looking forward to start shooting for the same. He wants to capture all the moments of Sanju’s life and show all the known and unknown side of his life to the audiences.”

Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees costar, Mahira Khan, was set to give Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan competition with her Pakistani film, Bin Roye, this Friday. But the actress from across the border has been stonewalled by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and will have to wait till next Eid to be unveiled in the state. Her upcoming film will not open in Maharashtra.

Confirming this, Ameya Khopkar, President of the Maharashtra Navnirman Chitrapat Karmachari Sena, the film wing of the MNS, told Mirror, “We opposed the release of the film in Maharashtra since it is a Pakistani film. They have agreed to our demand and it is a victory for us. We don’t want a Pakistani film here when they are attacking us.”

  63. Midway through Baahubali: The Beginning, a person seated next to me in the theatre tells his friend: “Yeh toh Hollywood ko takkar de sakta hai.” (This film can give Hollywood a run for its money).

Director SS Rajamouli has done it again.

After making brilliant blockbusters like Magadheera (2009), Marayada Ramanna (2010) and Eega (2012), his latest Telugu film Baahubali has shattered box office records by getting the highest opening ever in India, defeating such films like Happy New Year, Dhoom 3 and Ek Tha Tiger.

Hyderabad saw two kilometer long snake lines at ticket counters; tickets that were sold for more than Rs 2,000. The server of a popular online movie booking website crashed within half an hour of starting is online booking.

And the movie experience is totally worth it.

Baahubali looks stunning on screen, especially the 30-minute climatic war sequence that can easily be compared to Hollywood films like 300, Troy or the popular television series Game Of Thrones.

“The man is a sheer genius,” says Karan Johar, who is presenting Baahubali in Hindi. “Every time he comes up with something that we cannot even even imagine in our wildest dreams.”

While the film appears larger-than life, Rajamouli himself is very down-to-earth.
