  1. Looks way better than the usual Salman deal. Of course Kabir Khan is technically much more accomplished as well. if he gets the script right here (ETT doesn’t give much confidence in that regard) and doesn’t make a flat film this could be truly big. Not just the initial and so on (here I expect something bigger than usual with the recent court case issue) but on trending. Again Kabir Khan will need a proper script though. ETT was mostly a flat film and not surprisingly simply tanked after the first week.

    • if Kabir Khan had a bit of Anil Sharma in him in a narrative sense he could get to 300 with this one. All the elements are in place. But I’d be very surprised if his script is that strong here.

    • And this is a movie I might have checked out in the theater but given ETT which I found boring even on home viewing I won’t take that chance. Unless of course others persuade me otherwise.

      • sallu is actually truly and only actor who is doing what Big B did in his youth – script / story does NOT matter – he is so larger than life and overshadows the the other aspects that people go to watch S A L M A N K H A N and make it 200-300 cr or whatever it is! Bachchan did that to so many stupid scripts – in this matter no one can beat this man – not even aamir (although comparison is bit stupid but sallu is raw star power.)

        • And once again there is again this very serious misunderstanding of things. Salman is the sort of star who prospers PRECISELY in the nothing film. if he were in RDB no one would show up! People don’t expect good scripts from him. At the most he could have a stronger Wanted kind of deal. But that is still a nothing film. It’s like saying Stallone or Shcwarzenegger or Will Smith or Vin Diesel did nothing films. That’s what people expect of them! If they did more sensible things no one would watch them. every industry has such stars. And for the better scripts or parts you also need credible stars. It’s not as if you could put Stallone in a Scorsese script and people would like him as much as De Niro! Every industry has stars who prosper hugely with junk entertainment. There’s nothing wrong with this. I love many such films and stars myself. But I don’t make this sort of analogy, the one you’re indulging in. For the record though there is no masala effort of Salman’s that matches Ghajini (biggest total of that period, biggest initial of that period.. Dabanng did neither). There is no Salman film that matches Gahjini’s trending either. And we don’t even have to get into the Hirani films. It’s rather bizarre that Aamir the largest grossers around by far, the best trending films and what not and one still hears such stuff. Of course Salman is doing something incredible in terms of the initials, of course he’s in the zone. But there’s a sane way to understand all of this without engaging in analogies that are simply inaccurate. Not just misguided but wrong on the basic facts. And to repeat this point yet again I know Salman is a certain kind of mass star and loved in a way Aamir isn’t. But so what? If I’m a distributor whose film promises me the greatest profits? And it’s not as if Aamir does super-expensive productions like Ra One or something. The entire media/trade apparatus has been pushing the message and of course everyone swallows it uncritically.

“In life a very simple rule ought to be remembered….”

lol !! wth is this some kind of a drill or a lecture or simply your nature to profess everything Bachchan ? To be honest, the Bachchan baritone advantage itself negates any kind of serious standing among the current crop and barring Ajay D there is hardly any decent contest on that front which in my opinion is a requisite for ‘dialoguebaazi’ and fundamental to being a massy star.

But I have to bring the longevity angle of few which is somehow quashing those dockets ! Coming to Salman , interestingly on May 08th the day Salman got his bail from HC there was a news report running on Aajtak during pm hours which pls have a dekho to get some perspective on the topic. It’s titled –

‘Silver Screen Se Zameen Par Utara Nayak’.

I have tried to chop only the relevant portions and if possible watch it high definition / full screen.

Incidentally Piku had released just that day with initial lukewarm reception (to be fair it was day 1 & the wom had not kicked in yet). Its bring Amitabh Bachchan to the conversation. Please don’t pile on me with all rage as I have no desire for a trade off here.

There is so much disparity and hatred at each level and sometime resent Nehru/ Gandhi / Jinnah etc for creating such monstrous idiocy called Pak (no offence to anyone here). Destiny has doomed the region for at least few generations more. I say few generations because imo there is ultimately going to be a military solution to this nonsense. As a society folks will never mature and the present educated generation has gotten more corrupt in terms tolerance. If I had a way , in the greater interest of some peace of whatever remains of our lives, would never allow a single Indo – Pak cricket match happen which to me causes further enmity on a street level. And again if this film has a proper script I’d be willing to check it out. I don’t say this very often about a Salman film. This is as good a trailer as one can ever get from Salman. But Kabir Khan gives me pause because of ETT.

  4. Very smartly playing and milking the communal angle. Pakistan and middle-east clientele covered. Though we know that Salman and Aamir are the only 2 super-stars who DO not wear their religion on their sleeve. Salman especially is a pain in the tight-arse of some regressive mullahs!!!

If it were SRK, I would be more than suspicious of such a project.

    • but the difference is that Salman is covering both sides here.. the Bajrangi ‘bhaijaan’ bits on one side, the Pakistani girl on the other.. with SRK there’s usually much greater ambiguity. I haven’t seen Bajrangi of course but I suspect this will be universal in the old masala sense. Plus Kabir Khan strikes me as being sympathetic to the ‘greater subcontinent’ idea and this in the secular sense without tilting to the other side, cynically or otherwise.

Not that I have any great interest in words like ‘nationalism’ or ‘patriotism’. In fact I’m deeply suspicious of them irrespective of the country in question. But given the shape of a political field one can act cynically or opportunistically.

Wow that’s pretty straightforward! Given his recent court outings and the prejudiced BJP types baying for his blood, there is no way he is not going to venture that path.

Teaser shows few glimpses of red light area where he is taking the girl out from the goons. At most this will show issues on Pak side in accepting her back or something and little bit of politicizing there (Incidentally ETT was banned in Pak).

Salman or in fact none among the Khans are in any state to make an anti India movie since they have to carry their nationalism on their sleeves most of the time.

Teaser response seems overwhelming outside this blog and this one is going to break the ceiling in terms of box-office ( at least initially ) but a reasonable consensus so far has been if the makers get the script / screenplay right it will wreck havoc and not just opening wise but in longevity.

All I say was that with a proper dramatic script and enough emotional heft to it this kind of subject would trend well. Specially given’s Salman’s initial 300 wasn’t a stretch. Overall the concept is very good for a Salman Khan movie, if the screenplay is interesting as well this will be huge. Also, if only the ending is done right with little bit leeway in between, this will work big time.

It is going to be very big at the multiplexes as well as at single screens. If there is one film that looks likely to join D3 past the 300cr mark, then this is the one.

  13. This trailer does not particularly interest me. I do not like thisi kind of obvious, sentimental subjects. Unless it comes up with some superlative treatment. Anil Sharma touched one’s heart with hsi sensitive and detailed build up of the love story in Gadar…and Sunny and Amisha conveyed that innocent love so well. Can Kabir and Salman come with such a genuinely touching story and an equally effective treatment. I have only seen New York of Kabir, which is decent but not pathbreaking in terms of insights and grip over human emotions. From there he can go either way. So I will wait for audience feedback before jumping into it.This mixing up of Bajrang and Pakistan kind of turns me off. So unless they have come up with some epic parable I am likely to keep away, like I kept away from My Name is Khan.

    • ‘The text on the screen gives it away. Produced by Salman Khan in collaboration with Rockline Venkatesh — a Bangalore-based remake king with the name like a Bond villain — the film, we’re told, is about “a little girl from Pakistan” who is “lost in India.” So far so good, but then the makers start ratcheting up the threat level. “Without her voice,” says the caption, as we see a rosy-cheeked girl cry. This “voice” bit may be the fact that she’s robbed of an identity, trapped and voiceless, OR, shrugging off any need for metaphor in classic bhai fashion, it may well mean she is literally incapable of speech, which indicates that the film might go either the Shamitabh or the Hatya way. Ulp.
The mission appears simple: Khan will take the innocent girl back home. This may not be a bad thing — that one-line has more story than Khan’s last three-releases, and Kabir Khan has, in the past, gotten him to make an actual effort and play a character instead of Salmanning it, but the film looks cliched, melodramatic and exhausting. At one point Nawazuddin Siddiqui, apparently a Bhai-cohort this time, asks how Salman could possibly find the girls parents. He says Lord Hanuman will help. “Even in Pakistan?” asks Siddiqui, his eyes brimming with EMIs.
      http://www.rediff.com/movies/report/whats-scaring-salman-khan-in-bajrangi-bhaijaan/20150529.htm
That’s the kind of thing that passes for a joke. Not that opinions matter, because, as said, the film will be a box office behemoth. Then again, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a film where the hero is wearing a gada-shaped talisman — or, in other words, carrying mace. Is Salman Khan scared?”

    • One of the contemporary problems in any case is that people tend to be a bit too harsh when an actor is down a bit or lying low for a while. And then when the same actor is doing well people go to the extremes at the other end. No one takes any responsibility for their views and no one is particularly bothered with how much they’re wrong so often. This is not like making predictions for the box office. There one can often be wrong. But on more fundamental things one should be a little embarrassed to be that wrong that often. Henry pointed this out earlier but Salman’s a case in point. I’ve myself said this for very long. He was in the wilderness for years doing films like Garv! He simply did not seem to matter. No one, no one at all could have predicted he’d be where he is currently. Rather than be sobered by this people keep making either ‘ultimate’ predictions for other careers (success or failure) or they try and rationalize Salman’s current career. As if they were predicting this all along! Of course a retroactive narrative has also developed whereby he never really went away and was somehow always strongly in the running. Whatever! But again as a more general point there is for most people not even a minimal distance between what they’d like to see happen with various stars and films and a critical sense towards what actually happens. One can be the greatest fan of a star, that’s not problematic, but constantly saying stuff that belongs to the ‘imaginary’ is. And once more there is this very harsh attitude towards failure (a new Indian problem). I wonder how these folks would like it if they were judged in their own lives by the same standards.

  20. Hmm. The story looks interesting however I don’t think the execution is good. ETT’s teaser was better and kick ass however barring all the action scenes, most of the film was boring and slow. This looks like the same deal. I agree with Satyam, Kabir Khan doesn’t know masala nor can he do the emotion thing that well. But let’s see, I’m hopeful. Salman looks bloated in a couple of scenes and good in the rest. The little girl is good. Kareena looks to have a 3 second role, however Katrina wasn’t even in the teaser of ETT yet she had a significant role in the movie. Kabir Khan usually doesn’t write flowerpot roles for his actresses. Then again this is the first time he isn’t using Katrina so lets see.

That title song could’ve been better, I expected more from Pritam. This sounds like that Radhe Radhe song from HNY.

Good to see Salman doing something that seems different from his usual nothing films. He might have to *act* for the first time this decade. BO initially should be record breaking but lifetime is in doubt because of Kabir Khan’s direction imo. Just based off the story this definitely could hit 300 if executed well.

    • this is again a mistake people commonly make. A star prospers in a junk genre. This doesn’t mean all films in that genre are exactly the same. Just as some Fast and Furious parts are more enjoyable than others. What happens is that people condemn the genre wholesale (with good reason) and then wonder how the star does so well in it. They then feel it’s only about the star. of course it’s about the star inasmuch as he might be in the zone at a certain point. But just as some Akshay comedies were better or worse than others, similarly some Salman films are better or worse than others. But forget even the truly junk stuff. Something much better like ETT (in terms of production values and so on) opened hugely for that reason but also fizzled out very fast. Unlike Kick which was much more stable. So one doesn’t even have to go as far as Jai Ho. Even among films that attracted a big audience and sustained minimally for a week or so clearly some Salman films did better than others. And of course the corollary here is that just because certain stars prosper in quality films does not at all mean that someone like Salman can do the same. Because those kinds of films require a different kind of credibility.

I see this very often but it ain’t true. Doing 198 crores can’t happen if it ‘fizzle out fast’, that too in 2012. It won’t even happen now.

        • check out what it did in the first week or so compared to what it did after this. It’s a simply question of trending. Films that open hugely, flood the market with prints can very easily get to high numbers unless they’re completely rejected on day 1. That doesn’t very often. In Hollywood you have films making big numbers a lot of times that aren’t commercial successes. Clearly ETT had enough support to last that week or so. But that’s already a low bar. It’s saying a film is some kind of success unless it does a Jai Ho. Note however that even with the latter the problem came with the initial. If a film does 140-150 in an initial 7-9 day period and then just adds another 40-50 to the gross that’s hardly the definition of a great success. I don’t know why so many in India still find it so impossibly hard to wrap their minds around the idea that for a certain kind of film and star the big initial is ‘expected’. It is then a question of what happens beyond this. No one in Hollywood celebrates Jurassic World for opening big, they do so when it truly beats expectations and then trends well. The Lost World did 90m or so over the weekend and that was massive at the time but then it ended up at 220m which was considered a disappointment by many. The Avengers could have made 300m instead of 620 (first one) and you could have asked that very same question. ETT wasn’t Besharam but no film is Besharam! That’s just rare. Even BV wasn’t Besharam (though of course a bigger disaster) because here no one showed up in the first place. Similarly for whatever odd reason no one was very interested in Jai Ho. Don’t think people hated it like Besharam. They just didn’t show up in enough numbers so the film put up a JTHJ kind of performance. This is where the absurd propaganda of various box office sources in India has had an effect over time. people start believing this stuff. No number means anything in isolation. For a good reason. If films put up those kinds of numbers they also have the same in terms of production/distribution costs and so on. The same economic reality holds at every point on that food chain. Not only when it’s about the gross. But this is again the absurd picture presented by various sources. They pretend to offer budgets and what not. except that the biggest films are the only beneficiaries of these perverted narratives. Small films have to do a lot more to be declared hits than the biggest ones. As if you just make a much bigger film at no extra cost! It’s ridiculous but enough people buy the stories.

  41. You do the comparison, I’ll just provide the number. Calling Kick tremendous trending and calling EKK fizzling out doesn’t make any sense.

    KICK:
    Week 1 – 163 crores
    Week 2 – 214 crores
    Lifetime – 231 crores.

    EK THA TIGER:
    Week 1 – 137 crores
    Week 2 – 180 crores
    Lifetime – 198 crores.

    • First off I did not call Kick’s trending tremendous. Secondly ETT was strong for 7-9 days and then tanked more or less. It was around 150 or so after its extended week. check out the day by day numbers. It remains very strong for a certain period and then it does very little. There is also some reason to doubt that 198 crore final number. I personal doubt it did much more than 190. Leaving this aside also remember there’s a huge difference between ETT and Kick in terms of the banner, lead actress and general scale of the production. If despite all this the film cannot touch 200, even using the most liberal estimates when CE crossed it and Kick did later there’s a problem. But let’s look at it another way. YJHD made almost as much as ETT, might even be the very same number, give or take 5 crores, depending on what you believe. How did that happen? So you really have to look at each individual film. Now it’s true that most big films these days make 70% of their eventual gross in week 1 or the extended first week. This has become the norm. But those films are underperforming too! I’ve said this consistently for a long time. The difference is ETT started out looking like a D3 and ended up way behind some other films let alone D3 (which itself didn’t maintain it’s blistering pace over the first 10 days or to some extent two weeks). When ETT opened it was the biggest at that point. it just zoomed to 150 crores putting up huge numbers every single day. But then it wasn’t a normal slowdown. It completely stalled. Obviously from that level it wouldn’t have just made 0! Kick was not doing the same, keeping in mind the necessary adjustments. Similarly HNY had the biggest day 1 around. It just fizzled out even on day 2. That doesn’t mean it’s a total flop or something but it’s certainly a big underperformer. Again it’s nowhere close to CE despite having come later. But otherwise I’m not calling Kick some sort of huge success either. if it’s a blockbuster kind of deal the week 1 number ought to be doubled at the very least. One can allow some latitude here but having 70% of your gross in week 1 or whatever is a flop by any standard in any sane industry. Even in Bollywood proper hits trend way better than this at every level and every genre (Singham, ZNMD, Rajneeti, Aamir’s various films, Kahaani etc). there’s simply no excuse for this. Even something like CE looks better in comparison. This isn’t any great shakes on the trending either. And to repeat yet another point here most of these films are just poor efforts or at the most barely entertaining ones. And it shows in the numbers once the hype dies down. No star and no amount of hype can ensure strong trending if the content isn’t liked enough. This is an iron law of cinema even if the trade today pretends not to notice (or actually they do.. they praise Tanu or something else for trending one day and then conveniently forget all of this the next.. on that score if Tanu’s doing 150 how are all those other big films anything but huge under performers?!).

Even when people have views in these matters they won’t stop enjoying an otherwise entertaining film for that reason. Of course when such films don’t work it’s easy to point out that this was the reason why.

    • I think script wise, it is very important to show a complete non-Muslim and different ideology- religion wise, not very high educated and kinda ‘naive’ person to take this journey to Pakistan. If you replace that Hanuman bhakth hero to an Urban Indian or even Muslim Indian, there is hardly any drama or conflict in the story or as much of a challenging journey. To pick the other extreme character from Pakistan is very good arc for the script and I think people will get it and for so-called Muslim fans, there will be enough content(Pakistan scenes and girl being Muslim) to keep them satisfied which by the way is lot more than any average movie.

      • agree.. you can do the Gump deal (if you will) where ‘politics’ is always a bit of a mystery for true ‘humanism’. it’s not an approach I otherwise like because it tends to obscure the ‘ideological’ (that which is always present whether we see it or not.. to paraphrase someone ideology is most visible when it is least apparent.. for instance K3G is as ideological a film as Gadar though the latter might deal with politics at some more literal level.. differently still if one does not take ‘political’ and ‘ideological’ as near synonyms then one must recognize ‘politics’ to be a subset of the ‘ideological’.. the former is always manifest, the latter not necessarily so..) but it’s one way of going about things. On the other hand you need a much more ‘literate’ native informant fully aware of the politics either way but then such a person wouldn’t engage in a quixotic act (this is the problem with VZ.. Salman crossing borders cluelessly for whatever reason might be acceptable with his general persona, SRK doing the same isn’t). In general though the reason I find this subject stale is precisely because directors indulge in these humanistic platitudes (we’re the same people divided by a border etc..). On the other hand a commercial film cannot easily become ‘serious’ on such an issue. The best such (missed) opportunity was Refugee. Here the protagonist doesn’t really belong to either world, he literally inhabits the no man’s land in between most often. Unfortunately by resorting to an easy conformism towards the end just to make it commercially more palatable and to give the refugee the nationalist narrative completely ruins the charge of this film. Otherwise with that extraordinary Kutch landscape and the mythic Refugee figure (though Dutta should have gone a bit further in this mythic direction) everything was in place.

The film was largely shot in Pahalgam, Chandanwadi, Sonmarg, Aru, and small towns near these places. It was one of the most thrilling experiences for the entire team. The entire team would trek for more than an hour to reach the desired locations.

Kabir Khan shares, “The BB climax was shot at the base of the Thajwas glacier outside Sonamarg. Located at 10 thousand feet above sea level… the 300 strong technical crew had to trek for an hour through snow every morning to reach the location. Added to this was were the 7000 extras that we had on set every day. Transporting them in hundreds of buses and then embarking on the hour long trek was a huge logistical challenge for the production. To add to their woes was the sub zero temperatures and hail storms that would interrupt the shoot.‎”

“We shot the climax in the heart of Kashmir surrounded by snow clad mountains, the sheer scale at which it is shot is overwhelming. Kabir has shot an incredible climax with Salman and Kareena packed with action and strong emotions. We always knew this would be a challenging shoot, but the cast and crew despite sub zero temperatures and 18 hour days managed to stay the course and the results are spectacular,” says Amar Butala, co-producer and COO of Salman Khan Films.

Another avg. number from a movie which needs a chart-buster for a blockbuster type opening ! Pritam hasn’t come up with anything worthy here until now. Adnan Sami is too flat and not suited for this qawwali. It may work to an extent if the picturisation is
      striking or dramatic.

You are right AamrisFan , the original with Sabri Brothers is much better and you need a certain gruffy voice or as they say ‘dard” to sing hair raising qawwali. It used to be done very effectively in early movies and added to the masala elements whether it was Hum Kisee Se Kam Nahin or Parda Hai from AAA.

In recent times one of the best qawwali was ‘Aya Tere Dar Par’ in Veer Zara and not only it had the maestro Ahmed and Muhammad Husain singing but Yash Chopra had such a nice build up at the ‘Dargah’ scene when SRK’s character and Preity Zinta’s character come face to face. And yes SRK really added to the scene with those stern expressions.

Another qawwali stalwart is Nusret Fateh Ali Khan but his rendition of Koi Jaane Koi Na Jaane from Aur Pyar Ho Gaya got utterly wasted on lackluster Bobby Deol and Aishwarya, though in their defense they were just starting out.

AamirsFan, if interested you must hear Ahmed & Muhammed Hussain who are from Jaipur in India and have sung very famous ghazals and qawwalis. There famous ghazal ‘Nazar Mujhse Milati’ ( never mind the atrocious video ) is brilliant.

He’s often laughed at the hypocrisy of those who now think he’s god and weren’t willing to look at him sometime back. Nonetheless this much success could turn anyone’s head and if he’s becoming that way it’s a pity.

Mahira Khan ousts Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan from theatres in Pakistan
Salman’s film will not release in Pakistan next week!

Salman Khan – Kareena Kapoor’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan is all set to release on Eid next week but not in Pakistan. As per the latest updates, the Pakistani government is planning to postpone the release of Salman’s film in the country to avoid clash with two of their biggest films. Mahira Khans Bin Roye and Javed Sheikh’s romcom Wrong No is all set to release on Eid in Pakistan.

There is a possibility that Kabir Khan’s film might eat into the business of Bin Roye and Wrong No which is why Bajrangi Bhaijaan might get postponed and will in Pakistan a week after the film’s actual release. But as per industry insiders, there is no clarity on the release of BB in Pakistan yet as the makers still have to receive a certificate from the Pakistani Censor Board. A source was quoted saying, “Certification is a cumbersome process and so, films are generally shown to a foreign censor board about two weeks prior to release. However, in Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s case, it has not been screened yet.”

As of now BB hasn’t been screened anywhere to avoid piracy but having said that, censor screenings that take place outside India happen only three to four days before a film’s release and the same is the case for the Pakistani screening so nothing can be said as of now. A spokesperson of White Hill Production and Distribution said, “A special request can be made to the board and one can get a go-ahead in just three or four days.”

This one seems different though and looks like having a solid script and a joyful watch in the larger than life scheme of things. This will not be a realistic movie but an enlarge fantasy with strong emotional base. Fans of realistic cinema or with a rigid mode of thinking with regards to films might or might not like it but it will be a true blue experience to watch in Cinema and I am hoping this will be second movie of my life I will get to watch in Cinema after 3 iditos and i will enjoy it unlike 3 idiots. Since I am getting marrried it will be like a honeymoon treat.

The confidence on Salman’s face regarding this movie is understandable. This one will surpass PK easily and as a wholesome entertainment it will be far superior to PK. After a long time a movie where the whole songs album will be chartbuster. This movie is about breaking free from the conventional man-made boundries and barriers so in sense it is about humanity but certainly it will be an entertainer rather than a serious take on it. It seems though Kabir khan has got the script right this time around. whatever has been shown in the trailers and teasers the cinematography and locations will be breathtaking and Salman seems in ease with the role this time around. Salman will be charm personified and will be endearing in the movie.

As i said i am not a huge salman khan fan but looks like his fate is taking him many notches higher in terms of stardom. Never knew he could go higher in terms of stardom considering the current status he has. A milestone is Salman’s career and nobody is going to match him in a long time to come.

    • LOL, every other film was supposed to ‘surpass’ 3I for years. Now every other film is supposedly going to surpass PK! I’ll have to see it to believe it. I would first have a more modest goal and try and surpass D3! Having said that many films are actually in position to do these things but it never happens because the films are simply not good enough. Could a Bajrangi with Dabanng-like trending do so? Absolutely! But this is precisely why most of the big films are huge under performers. In the initial stages they look like they’ll get to 300, then they huff and puff just to get to 200! The problem is you can’t have it both ways. If you say a film can cross PK or opens as strong or better then the same standard should be held in the later stages. You can’t then say that 230 is great. Even PK hardly had 3I-like trending. So it’s not as if this is some completely unachievable barrier. But if disposable films are made that no one is particularly interested in after the initial frenzy cools down these results are hardly surprising.

I think the best decision that Salman and Kabir Khan did with this movie is by taking Rajamouli’s father, veteran writer – K Vijeyendra Prasad(who’s also writer for Bahubali and other Rajamouli movies). I think these southern writers are in great form and they can write the screenplay better than struggling Hindi writers(no wonder all Salman south remakes are blockbusters except Jai Ho). That gives some hope in the screenplay department.

Also, Salman iis never this confident about a movie as Bajrangi Bhaijan. Even Sajid Nadiadwala after seeing the first cut claims – “300 crores pakka”. Checkout one of his responses.

        ********************************************************************
Kabir Khan in one of his interviews mentioned that this is not a typical Salman Khan film where he is playing a larger than life character.

Even though I am playing a realistic character, it is still larger than life. The film is made on a grand scale. It’s by far the biggest character that I have played. I had to put a lot of hard work in it. My earlier films like ‘Kick’, ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Ready’ to name a few were all chalta purza characters. ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ will bring back the innocence that I had in ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. There are three different types of reactions the audience gives when they come out of the theatre; mazaa nahi aaya (didn’t like the film), doosra hai ki achi film hai (it’s a nice film) and the third one is kya kar diya in logon ne? ekdum zabardast. (What have they done? It’s mind-blowing). People who have seen the rushes of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ have had the third reaction. This assures us that we have made a good movie and people would come and watch the movie again and again.

Well the odds are stacked against him. Certainly one cannot be foolish enough to assume it won’t be great – but I certainly won’t take his words as any reason to get excited. I don’t know what you talking about, makes no sense. You talking as if he’s not had a hit in many many years. In Salman’s mind all his recent year movies did great (except Jai Ho).. and if he thinks Bajrangi Bhaijan will also be successful albeit more than his other films, why is that so hard to get it?

Everyone knows Salman is the biggest star around and opens his films with huge fandom. But everyone also knows after about two weeks, the hype usually is gone and everyone is waiting for another film to release.

Like I said, Salman is talking about how much people are “raving” about how good his film is. He hasn’t had a good film in ages. Yes his films have raked money. But they are not good films, except for Dabangg which was fun.

      • Why so skeptical and cynical Satyam? Look at the promos with an open mind and then judge the scale of this film. Look at the promotional events and Salman interviews for this film and you will sense the vibe. After many years he seems interested in promoting a movie whole-heartedly and looks very confident in the knowledge that he has a winner on his hands. Salman’s performance in the promos looks refreshing. Overall its a simple story but one with a potential and scope for a wholesome entertainment. This is not some very unusual stuff or cerebral entertainment. This is more like something feel good, visually stunning, fast-paced and larger than life situations to enjoy.

As far as the business is concerned, Salman’s prevous big grossers which were universally called good films (Dabangg, Ham Aap ke hain kon) were not cerebral films. And why say this cannot be a big grosser. As far as I am concerned Aamir or Hirani after spending a considerable time and effort came up with an above average film in PK if to be judged on the entertainment quotient and fluency, continuity and flow in the film. Your favourite’s piku in comparison was a lot more enjoyable film with comparatively less effort and a simple story line. So before you pass judgement or call someone great based on the quality of their product you have to realize we have no stakes in the projects.

Hum Aap ke hain kon or Dilwale dulhaniya le jaein gay individually are more entertaining than Mangal Pandey, Fanaa,Ghajini, Talaash, 3 iditios and PK. Now both these films have the actors and makers you don’t really like. It is not about the body of work. Anyone can come up with a great entertainment for ages not dependent on the hardwork they put in and we enjoy it irrespective of who is at helm of the project.

Somewhere we have lost the passion for films in this fan following mode or a quest to critically analyze a film. Obsession over filmstars or a body or work by any actor has made entertainment a competition and somewhere we have gone into a negative mode.

One wants a movie to be magical experience where one can forget the world around and to fling into the narrative being emotionally manipulated forgetting the bitter reality of life one has to go through. Piku. lunchbox or “Anytime anywhere” were the few which absorbed my full attention and this seems like the fourth one.

        • yes a ‘good’ film should be cherished assuming we can agree on what constitutes a ‘good’ film. Leaving this aside one cannot accept it’s a good film on faith when it’s Salman involved in it. Again nothing against him at this level but most of his films are utter junk. Some might be more enjoyable than others but they’re not better otherwise. If Bajrangi is a good film I wouldn’t mind accepting it at all.

        • actually you might not have seen my comment on the first trailer where I said it looked better than ETT to me. I didn’t like any of the subsequent trailers. That’s point 1. The rest of your comment doesn’t really address my point. In terms of sheer probability any film crossing PK is not very likely. It is of course possible. But to repeat myself the films in question are generally not good enough to show that sort of trending. Could Bajrangi be an excellent film that does it? Sure! but you don’t bet on this starting out given that not one of Salman’s films, including Dabanng, has matched Ghajini’s trending let alone 3I’s (sorry Master! but authentic benchmarks have to be pointed out each time.. specially when everyone else celebrates far less all over the place). Could this be a Gadar-like deal for him? Anything’s possible. On Salman’s judgment here I’d agree with Jay. If he had great judgment he wouldn’t have been in the wilderness for years. Now after Dabanng he’s been fine but once again he’s doing ‘nothing’ films, a high number of which are Telugu remakes. Not sure what ‘great’ judgment this suggests. Or does it take great judgment to take on ETT? Let’s be more charitable. Maybe because of the theme of Bajrangi Salman considers it a stronger film. maybe he considers the script great because it beats something like Kick! Simply Salman being huge on the film doesn’t mean anything. If Aamir said this it would be one matter but not Salman. Nonetheless this film can be huge if Salman is half-right. My only point though is one of probability. It has nothing to do with cynicism though candidly I have very little patience for these claims anyway. Looking at the state of contemporary Bollywood I’d argue that it’s a little foolish not to be cynical about most things! Once more I liked the first trailer when most here didn’t. I don’t make these things personal. Like or dislike of a star has nothing to do with what I think of a trailer. I was positive on the Fan teaser as well. This seems surprising because of course there are many who suddenly like or dislike things based on who’s doing them.

        • “Even if one doesn’t like Aamir in what universe is one not entertained by 3I?”

Not 3I but PK 2nd half, I didn’t care for. I even tried watching on TV reruns but 2nd half is just flat IMO and adds nothing to the plot which hasn’t touched in 1st half and skips the argument after building it. Also, we had some 2 star reviews for 3I as well and lot of them not enjoying it as much. So, it is possible to an extent.

        • I also found the PK second half weak. I was still entertained but one expects far more from Hirani. But after Dutt’s incarceration they were forced to make some script changes (he had much more to do in the film) and it could be that this took a toll in the second half.

On 3I I’m not saying everyone should like it but not if one otherwise likes a number of other films that by any reasonable standard would be considered far less entertaining. that’s the only argument I have here. Otherwise I’d take Talaash over both those Hirani films. I might take it over most other Aamir films since Lagaan too. But I wouldn’t argue as a critical matter that it’s the ‘best’ of his films (though I think it’s one of his more interesting ones along with MP..). And speaking of Hirani I’d still take the first Munnabhai over any other film of his.

        • and again my only point here is that if PK’s second half is problematic (which I agree with) most films of most other stars should be unwatchable. How can one manage to even get through most of Salman’s stuff using this standard? Or so much that SRK has done? So on and so forth.

        • How do i explain it. In Aamir’s words its the intangible. Munabhai had that natural flow and flair and the completeness of an experience. I have a problem with carefully constructed classics so so subsequent hirani films i did not enjoy though they were better than the average product. I would prefer “The Sapranos” to a “True detective” through from the same channel and both extremely popular because the later seems like a forced attempt to create a classic. To correct my statement in the earlier post i would repost it:

“Hum Aap ke hain kon or Dilwale dulhaniya le jaein gay individually are more entertaining than Mangal Pandey, Fanaa,Ghajini, Talaash, 3 iditios and PK combined”.

        • You’ve made it clear but also the statement has now become a bit more appalling! I certainly think DDLJ is a classic. HAHK though entertaining is simply too cheesy, too poor a film in every production sense of the word to be taken as anything but a guilty pleasure. MP I consider one of the most interesting Hindi films of contemporary times and also one that gets better over time. I’ve already mentioned a couple of the others. On Ghajini of course this is pure masala but I’d easily take it over every single Salman film including Dabanng (and for certain reasons over the original as well.. talked about it in a piece at the time).

Specially when there isn’t ‘junk’ in it. with most stars you’re likely to get a meaningful film once in ten times!

But how do you define obsession with stars and their films and discussions revolving around how good or bad they are and their work.

        • Gox: good to see your comments. One thing I agree is that you can’t judge a movie technically or quality wise or in parts. Like if you are disappointed with 2nd half of PK and coming out ‘incomplete’ movie watching experience is somehow lot better than watching a lesser quality Salman movie but ‘complete’ movie watching experience just coz PK is better ‘quality’ movie made by a superior director. That has nothing to do with satisfaction from a movie. You can like even a silly Akshay movie over a Mani Ratnam flop movie even though technically and quality wise Mani’s movie can be 10-20 times better than Akshay movie.

          Like

        • I am going to respond both to Gox and you with this comment. Let me start with an example. Two sports titans. Sachin and Messi. Everyone loves them, everyone appreciates their skills. But here’s the crux of the matter. The more refined your understanding of each sport is the better you’ll be able to understand where precisely the greatness of each figure lies. Which is why Gavaskar appreciates Sachin in ways I never can. Because my understanding of the game cannot equal his. Not just because he’s played the game. Many critics of cricket understand cricket as well as Sunny does. Similarly many people who follow soccer closely and have kept up with many facets of the game understand Messi in ways that I cannot.

The very same holds true for cinema. This whole split between an ‘enjoyable’ movie and one that can be appreciated only for its ‘technical’ aspects is a false one. I ‘enjoy’ Talaash or MP more than Fanaa or Ghajini or D3 or at least in comparable ways. I loved Jurassic World but I might love a Scorsese film in similar ways. Because when one appreciates the ‘art’ of a film one enjoys it in comparable ways. The ‘technical’ is not divorced from the experience of a film. provided one knows how to appreciate this stuff. The point then isn’t that one cannot enjoy a Salman film more than a Ratnam film. The question rather is whether one is equally qualified to do both! Why do the vast majority of commercial hits belong to the dustbins of history while so many films that didn’t do as well or were commercial flops get valued so much more over time? Today are we more likely to talk about Sarfarosh or Raja Hindustani? Are we more likely to discuss Earth or Ishq? Is Lagaan going to endure more or Dhoom 3? Well the same holds at every level of the medium. If you can appreciate what makes Satyajit Ray great you will never say that you enjoyed Akhsay’s comedy more than Ray’s work! It just won’t be possible. I enjoy guilty pleasures as much as the next person. I am even more likely to show up on day 1 for Jurassic world than any other kind of film. That doesn’t mean Jurassic World is somehow worth more than a Scorsese film which I might or might not watch on day 1.One is free t enjoy anything. But one shouldn’t hold out one’s enjoyment as the only standard out there. This is the real narcissism! And so when we get to Hirani my point isn’t that no one can dislike 3I but that if one isn’t entertained by this and one yet finds Kick very entertaining (or whatever the Salman example is) then one probably just enjoys a more lowbrow kind of cinema. I don;t mean this in a judgmental sense but to say that that Salman’s films are somehow comparable to 3I is I think absurd. He could be doing masala films that were comparable with Hirani’s but he isn’t at the moment! Much as Telugu cinema is by and large in its commercial formats quite poor barring certain exceptions. Check out what Rajamouli says about the Telugu industry vis-a-vis the Tamil one in his exchange with Johar. And this is all that Bombay is remaking. I enjoyed Rowdy Rathore a lot but it was also extremely crude, lowbrow entertainment. One wouldn’t dream of comparing it with something like Khakee. So even within entertainment there are more or less meaningful levels. Similarly if one doesn’t find Dil Se more entertaining than every Salman film (as I certainly do) the problem might not lie on Ratnam’s side. This doesn’t mean Ratnam or Hirani or whoever cannot make weak films or lesser films but these are so by their ‘higher’ standards. I myself consider PK’s second half weak but that doesn’t mean I find YJHD superior to it!

We are all free to enjoy whatever we want but I don’t think this ‘enjoyment’ argument is presented very sincerely a lot of times. Sometimes it just becomes a rhetorical strategy. If you can’t defend a film any other way just say ‘I enjoyed it more, why are you being a bully and taking my right away?’! The funny thing is that when (for example) SRK does a Swades or a CDI the very same folks who use this enjoyment argument suddenly become believers in Aamir’s brand of cinema. Then Swades becomes the greatest film around or whatever. So again there isn’t total sincerity to these positions.

Finally there’s something called the ‘reasonable’. Someone might enjoy Houseful more than Munnabhai but I wouldn’t consider it a reasonable opinion! I enjoyed Jurassic World but I wouldn’t be reasonable if I said it’s a better film than Gravity. Or that Jurassic is better than Interstellar because the latter might have had problems while the former was perfect at what it did.

lol. I read somewhere about Salim Khan hugging Kabir after watching BB. If I remember correctly, he had done the same after ETT and Jai Ho too…so hugs are easy way to get out of tricky situations without saying much. Though I do trust Sajid Nadiadwala and David Dhawan for commercial trappings and both are gung ho on BB’s box-office potential.

Personally will go with low expectations as i fear over indulgence which is the case with many srk and salman movies lately. They do border obnoxiousness at places. BB songs are very ordinary and hope work better with filming , so there will be dearth of paisa wasool moments too…so lets see.

I kind of know how it is going to play out. Start with a bang with few genuine fun moments with junior ‘pavan’ putra, few awkward romance scene /courtship and then the long drawn journey in search of girl’s family with forced humor…..the kind we witnessed in promos/songs.

Its the ending which will make this movie something worth a watch and hope they play the emotions properly and give some twist to the story and give their unique take on human seemliness.

Here’s what Trade Experts have to say about Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s Boxoffice Fate –

The moment of reckoning is just round the corner. Less than 100 hours remain for the release of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the calculations have already begun. While it is pretty much a given that the film would be releasing on the highest screen count ever for a Salman Khan starrer (over 5300 just in India), there are many records of his own that the Superstar would be aiming to break.

These are as follows (only for Indian theatrical):

Biggest Opening Day – Ek Tha Tiger (33 crore)
Highest First Three Days collections (Kick – 83.85 crore)
Highest First Week collections (Kick – 164.21 crore)
    Biggest Lifetime Total (232 crore)

Notable and realistic one here –

    Rajesh Thadani (Distributor):

” Although it is tough task, with the popularity that Salman has (which is growing day by day), the promo and songs becoming popular and Eid on its side, Bajrangi Bhaijaan has all the chances of breaking Salman’s earlier records.”

The first day record requires a perfect storm so most likely its ruled out here. It would stand a chance if Eid in India is on 17th like the rest of the world. PRDP is aiming for release a day after Diwali similar to HNY so that record will be broken one way or the other within this year.

BB is banking too much on just presence of Salman and this is a test of his solo potential with nothing else at play. Bodyguard was in similar zone prior to its release but on the day of its release there was a sudden outpouring of support due to his health concerns and flying out to U.S. for medical reasons, which turned out to be a one sitting treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia to New Jersey. But sympathy wave had already taken over. I remember news channels all had flown to cover his treatment and he jokingly referred ki main mar nahin raha hoon !

Box-office of that movie in particular was a huge surprise esp when you bring Anushka Kohli to the play with that hairdo. Movie too was all over place. Except Sushant brief appearance and breezy romance in the beginning I was never connected to the movie. One of the reason I feel Hirani should attempt romance as full complete movie. He has been great in portraying Indian romance perfectly in all his earlier movies and always has something new there like starting that meeting point with pyaarelal ji of Bachchan fame.

    • I’d agree with Master on repeat value. On PK it certainly had enough repeat value. You don’t have to love a movie to be able to see it twice. You might just like it but find enough worthwhile in it to be able to do so (depending of course on your taste). The problem with most of Salman’s movies or perhaps all of them barring Dabanng is that even the fans probably couldn’t see them a second time! Hence the trending! Even Dabanng couldn’t Dabanng its week 1 number. Without a strong narrative it’s hard to do that.

We reduced ticket prices so that more people could watch the film, and if you want your film to garner Rs 250 crore or Rs 200 crore, do it on a Rs 200 ticket price, na. Why do it on a ticket price of Rs 600 or Rs 900? Just because we are not the ones spending that money? That was not appreciated and everyone is going with the set norms.”

“Given the very large numbers your films generally have to clock, does that restrict your choices? For example, a Rs 60-crore film might be considered a hit for someone but a Rs 150-crore Salman film is considered a flop. Does that restrict you from doing a certain role?

    • now this is more than a little disingenuous.. a film starts at 150-160 in an opening week. It then adds just 50-70 crores to this. A 300 target in these circumstances is hardly ‘imaginary’! The ticket prices deal is more bunk. This can’t be a factor only for Jai Ho. So they didn’t reduce prices for every other big grosser of his? C’mon!

Again let me be as blunt as possible since this debate over final gross has come up many times. Anyone who argues that trending isn’t a reasonable standard or that 270-300 (I;m being kind here with that lower end range.. not so long ago doubling the week 1 number was considered to be par for the course for a successful film) ought not to be a reasonable target once a film starts that big (and so on..) is either ignorant or dishonest or both. There is simply no other option. And it’s particularly amusing to see folks say PK wasn’t that great or whatever. Alright agreed. Well how did it get to its 330 or whatever?! Why can’t other ‘not so good’ films do the same? And again if Bajrangi is supposed to have a shot at this because of a stronger script isn’t one agreeing after all?! As the fan of every star does when their star’s film is remotely able to do that kind of number. Once 200 was supposed to be an unreasonable standard because 3I was special and what not. Then with inflation enough films entered that range. Then no one said that 3I’s 200 crore would be double that in today’s gross. So these arguments are patently cynical if not downright dishonest. There is no ‘debate’ here. Folks should stop pretending there is one. And so on that context once more this whole discussion of ticket prices and what not is silly. Maybe some charity work should have been done with all the other Salman grossers also. They could all have stopped a bit north of a 100!

  76. On Kabir Khan, I have to say he is one of the WORST directors that has crossed over from documentary space to commercial film-dom. You can see a SEA change and drop in quality in his movies from KABUL EXPRESS to NY to ETT. He has not been able and smoothly segue from documentary to commercial film-making. He is lost, and it shows because he ends up making ‘fake’ movies. NY was the worst of the lot. It was a typical, run-of-the-mill crap that tagged onto 9/11. A regular pot-boiler was strainingly stacked with documentary clothes and shipped out. NY was a farce. With ETT, it at least came across as a non-sensical, well-shot movie. Take away all the technology and polish, and you will find a 2nd- tier movie..

BB seems to be on the same lines..the only difference being it is pretty clear he is going to manipulate the audience with cross-border shite. By that I mean, you are not going to get emotional ‘authencity’ the way Shimit portrayed SRK’s emotional landscape in CDI or even Sally’s in NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER.

“Advance booking for Salman Khan Films’ Bajrangi Bhaijaan opened to a phenomenal response at multiplexes and single-screens across India, with the first weekend shows already 70 per cent booked three days prior to the film’s release. In most circuits, advance booking opened this morning and since then, tickets have been selling like hot cakes. Distributors feel by tomorrow, the first week will likely be all sold out.”

” I have never witnessed such a frenzy for advance booking. All-India, advance booking is 75 per cent at both multiplexes and single-screens, and in Mumbai, it is 80-per cent and growing. It is safe to say that this film will create enormous box-office records. The weekend shows are almost already booked. This film will definitely break records that were created earlier this year and has been assigned 4,000-5,000 screens all-India and over 1,500 in Mumbai.”

    • Wow!!! The whole weekend selling out by thursday. This has never happened in hindi cinema history before. This looks like a monstrous opening around 150cr for the weekend.

      • The daily capacity is probably on average 45 crore. Maybe the film will make 300 crore in the first week with full occupancy.
Seeing as the advance is already “paid” for – why aren’t the box office sites already reporting these remarkable collections?

        • Yes for the 18th time in the last 5 years we’ve seen a never-before advance. These initials promise moon flights but then everyone is eventually happy just to orbit the earth and crash. Aamir of course gets there but then he has well-designed spacecrafts to complete the journey. What a loser! The real fun is in crashing.

In related news SRK is going more global than ever before. In fact he’s going beyond the globe and aiming for a Pluto release. The other day the spacecraft launched a Dilwale print towards Pluto from 7800 miles. Coupled with the Mars multiplex releases this adds seriously to his international gross. As for India even if he doesn’t get the biggest initial so what? He’s still rich.
