  1. Brothers Has Good To Decent Start

Brothers opened to a good to decent response on day one with occupancies on average around the 35% mark. The opening is similar to Gabbar Is Back which opened on a mini holiday but this film is bigger than Gabbar Is Back in terms of budget so it should have opened better than it has.

The opening of the film is lower than ABCD 2 which has been the second biggest opening of the year so far after Bajrangi Bhaijaan. There is a one of the biggest holidays of the year tomorrow which will help collections in the evening especially the big cities so it may challenge the ABCD 2 first day number but the film really needs the first day to come in at around 17-18 crore nett and then get the huge benefit of the holiday and get that strong weekend of 60 crore nett plus.

This does not look like happening from the opening morning numbers meaning the film is depending on the evening advantage today and the big holiday tomorrow. Last year Singham Returns grossed 31.50 crore nett on Independence Day though it was day one for that film. For Brothers it is day two but still it has to be around 25 crore nett otherwise the film will find it tough going. Basically the opening is not bad but it should have been better.

    • BO update: Brothers opens to mixed response
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, August 14, 2015 – 13:59 IST

This week we see the solo release BROTHERS featuring Akshay Kumar, Sidharth Malhotra, Jackie Shroff and Jacqueline Fernandez. The film which is an official remake of the Hollywood film Warriors has been in the news since its announcement, has managed to generate quite a bit of hype around it. Thanks to the hype surrounding BROTHERS expectations from the film have been high.

However, reports coming in from across the country depict mixed reactions. In fact while certain territories report a 50% occupancy rate during morning shows other regions have reported a staggering 80% occupancy rate.

On the whole, despite the mixed opening, BROTHERS is expected to pick up over the evening and night shows. Also, with Independence Day holiday tomorrow followed by Sunday, the business is expected to see a jump over the weekend.

  2. Bajrangi Bhaijaan Fourth Week Business
    Friday 14 August 2015 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bajrangi Bhaijaan grossed 10.25 crore nett in week four which is the third highest fourth week collection ever. The film in four weeks has grossed 309 crore nett and will probably settle at a lifetime total of 313-315 crore nett.

The film is the highest nett grosser ever in Delhi / UP, CP Berar, CI, Bihar , Assam and Orissa. The figures in East Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal are close to records but it may not have the legs to get another 50-70 lakhs needed in these three circuits. All three circuits do have the highest distributor share ever. The film has grossed more than any other film in history from single screens.

The footfalls will cross 3.5 crore which makes it the most watched film since Gadar in 2001 beating PK, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan Verdict – ALL TIME BLOCBUSTER (8th since 1996)

‘The footfalls will cross 3.5 crore which makes it the most watched film since Gadar in 2001 beating PK, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.’
This is simply ridiculous. BB wasnt a rage like Dabangg or Ghajini leave aside 3i.
And how Kabhi khushi kabhi gum came in the list of record Blockubusters? Just because Aamir and salman’s movies are in the list, they have to put srk movie also in the same bracket. When BOI came in existence, KKKG was a huge hit in india but never a blockbuster, though due to its record business in overseas, it was considered superhit. But, slowly it became blockbuster and now record blockbuster in BOI’s list. This is simply ridiculous.
And how come D2 is not in the list, Krrish was record blockbuster of its time and D2 crossed it by a margin in its opening and trend and total gross aswell.

  3. Drishyam Second Week Business
    Friday 14 August 2015 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Drishyam grossed 16.50 crore nett it its second week taking its two week total to 56.50 crore nett. The drop week on week is a little under 60% which is fair but with a poor first week it has meant the film has not done good business. It should comfortably cross 60 crore nett as despite the release of Brothers it has enough screen pace to add some more business.

The film is going to be best in Mumbai with business already over 22 crore nett and can finish with around 25 crore nett which means an average fare in Mumbai. But the rest of the circuits have not fared as well as Mumbai especially North with Delhi / UP doing less than 50% of Mumbai.

The second week collections are the seventh best of the year and after a low opening week, you have to be doing better in the second week. The film will be the highest Ajay Devgn grosser over the last 2-3 years outside Singham Returns but that is no consolation.

    Drishyam Verdict – BELOW AVERAGE

It will do good business in multiplexes and single-screen cinemas, and in ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’ class centres. The national holiday tomorrow will see collections take a huge jump.

And here’s the measure of the greatness and popularity of Amitabh..from here to the ENTIRE INDIAN PRESS falling at his feet at 72 talks of the stature of this man..

All the Sallu, SRK, Aamir fans and of course, Krishh Roshan, should just mull over this over a pint of beer if possible..the kind of mud-slinging and on-slaught Amitabh faced during his hey-days.. and still be the ABSOLUTE favorite of a country and beyond borders for 10 straight damn years at least from 1975 to 1985 is a monumental achievement that NONE.. I repeat NONE has been able to break..

In the days of twitter and all arm-chair trade-analysts claiming BAJRANGI and even relatively lesser films – the block-buster of the decade and some such shite, need to get a reality check. AND, if the fans believe that what Sallu is supposedly going through tough times and being ‘targeted’ and is coming out ALL STRONG inspite of ‘opposition’ because of his EK THA DRIVER episode — should read the above review at least twice –to get to at least a basic understanding of Amitabh’s phenomenon.

They ‘blackened’ his name from reviews, and there was no ‘twitter’ or face-book to have online fan-atics club as a parallel ‘press’ at that point. Amitabh couldn’t even present his point of view..

They are talking above of the same Amitabh..

    Liked it immensely. 4/5
First half is good and second nd half is excellent. This film is better than Warrior in terms of story, Akshay, Jackie Shroff and Jacqueline’s act.
Jackie Shroff in fact has given a performance which can match his Act in Gardish- a film I am immensely find of.
Sid has not done bad. It’s just that Tom Hardy was superb in Warrior. Salman Khan could have been an ideal choice.
This is Jacqueline first real act in bollywood.
    Shefali Shah leaves an impact.

AKSHAY KUMAR is the heart and soul of the movie. He is Superb and outstanding in desperation, anger, regret, and Brothers is his Rocky moment.

Talk about using the lord’s logo in vain, the entire film sees more dangling-cross action than George Michael’s earlobe from back in the day.
The entire first half, in fact, is unwatchable. Right upto the point of intermission, relentless melodrama is thrust our way with operatic zeal, complete with an excruciating, crescendo-driven background score and characters trying to out-wail it
Actually, I must here apologise. I may here have implied that the post-intermission portion is any good. It isn’t, though the good news is that after such a horrendous first-half, it does at least feature some spiffy camerawork and well-choreographed action sequences
Warrior may have been melodramatic to begin with, but Malhotra amps up each possible moment, laying it on impossibly thick and spelling every little gesture out for the audience.
His sons — Akshay Kumar, a physics teacher, and Siddharth Malhotra, a surly guy who shakes his leg a lot — hate each other and aren’t particularly nice to him. Still, the old fool keeps wishing they’ll all make up. It’s all rather like Rakhee in Karan Arjun going on about her sons prodigally returning

Weighing 158 unbearable minutes, Brothers is nearly 600-times as long as the Rousey win —- and not one-millionth as thrilling.

  22. Abhishek Bachchan: My dad taught me how to play Kabaddi

India is a cricket fanatic nation, which gives all its money and love to the game. It is thus no surprise that so many celebrities own teams related to various leagues associated with the game. However, Kabaddi is an indigenous game, a game whose origins lie in our own mythology, a game that India has never lost in at the world level and yet, no one came forward to promote it except for Abhishek Bachchan.

Yes, he’s a sports lover, but he could have chosen any other sport but no, he chose Kabaddi. A year back when the started, many of us wondered what made him do that. But by the end of Season 1, it had become the second most watched sport on Indian television and today, it has become a spectacle. Excerpts from a conversation with Abhishek Bachchan, the man who led India to recognise the potential of its own game Kabaddi.

While other stars invested in cricket, you chose Kabaddi. What made you take up the risk of investing in a sport that was perceived to be neither as fashionable nor as popular as cricket?

One, I have always wanted to do something with sport in India right from the time I was a student. I grew up in an environment (at the Aiglon College in Switzerland) surrounded by sport in a school that lay huge amount of emphasis on outdoor activity and sport. So for me, sports was a way of life and it had a huge hand in forming my personality and character. I always felt on one level that being an Indian, there are some sports we are so great at, but why are we great at just some sports? For India, sports is a matter of national pride. I will always remember a visual of Carl Lewis in the 1984 LA Olympics standing on top of that podium after winning the gold medal and he had tears in his eyes with the American flag in his hand and their anthem playing at the back. I remember going to the Asian Games in 1982 when I was a kid and seeing the Indian flag and the pride we felt at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium when an Indian won. I am a huge sports fan and have always played sport and continue to. It’s a fantastic release for me and a great way to stay in shape, apart from it being almost therapeutic. I wanted to do something, but in a sport that you could do something with. The reason I never ever considered cricket first on a personal basis is that it was way too expensive, secondly, cricket has a fantastic infrastructure in India as we are a cricket-loving nation. What can I contribute to it, so I never even thought about it. To add to that, I have never even played cricket. Yes, I watch it as a spectator and I love it, but I don’t have any great understanding of it. I was in a British school so for me, I was a football fan but I played only basketball, athletics and skiing. I once met the great sports commentator Charu Sharma, the mastermind behind the Pro Kabaddi League, in a social gathering and he asked me, ‘Have you ever thought of Kabaddi?’ And my reaction too like yours was, ‘What Kabaddi?’ He took me to a match in Mumbai and I was blown away. I had played Kabaddi casually as a kid and felt that it was dying to erupt on the sporting stage. Instinctively, I said yes to being a part of his league. And today, you come to Pro Kabaddi and you say, ‘Oh my God! It’s Kabaddi.’ That’s the victory for us.

Tell us how playing sport helped shape your character?

It teaches you everything, right from teamwork to leadership to dealing with success and failure to building a sportsman spirit. These are all things that we encounter on a daily basis. I was a basketball player in school. You are playing a match where you have a tough opponent, you are down 15 points, but you don’t give up, you adapt, dig deep, find the way, find the strength and the capability to go win a match. There are so many situations in life where you come across situations like this. Leadership, I was the captain of my team, how do you lead a team? You lead from the front, lead from the back, how do you change from time to time? Team work, basketball is a game of five people, how do you work with and be a part of the team. There are so many things in life where you will find a parallel in sport.

Any memories of playing Kabaddi as a child?

I was a kid when I saw a film of dad called Ganga Ki Saugand in which there is a sequence where he plays Kabaddi and he says, ‘Chal kabaddi chal kabaddi aal taal, mera gucha lal lal. Lal, lal, lal… I remember I used to find that very cool and would copy that and that’s when I first asked my dad, ‘What’s this game?’ and he said, ‘Kabaddi’. He drew lines in the garden on the ground and taught me how to play Kabaddi.

The presence of so many stars has made Kabaddi into a spectacle.

Before the start of Season 1, there were no sponsors. I remember talking to Ronnie Screwvala who owns the Mumbai team and he said, ‘Mark my words. This is going to be India’s biggest sport in times to come.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ And we had the inaugural match. My family was there and very sweetly, Shah Rukh, Aamir, the entire cast of Happy New Year, Sachin Tendulkar were there. I idol worship Sachin and had requested him to come since I was starting something new. And he not just came, but even wore a pink t-shirt. The game started and we lost our first match. Everybody was a bit sombre but the next morning when I woke up, Kabaddi had become the cool new sport overnight. A lot of people attributed it to all these huge stars that came be it dad, Aishwarya, mom, Shah Rukh, Aamir and Sachin. But let me tell you, yes glamour does make a sport a spectacle but the spectacle lasts only for 15 minutes. Being a sportsman, I can tell you that you can have the biggest star sitting there and it’s okay to see them for a few seconds, but you want to get back to the score. At the end of the day, if the sport is not doing the talking, any amount of glamour will not make a difference. I was flooded with messages that morning that read, ‘What is this Kabaddi man?’ For the rest follow the link-

    Saturday 15 August 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Brothers could not really make the mark on day one as it grossed 13.50 crore. The film did well in the regular Akshay Kumar markets but could not perform in the metros especially the multiplexes. The collections in Mumbai city, Delhi city, Kolkata and Bangalore were not upto the mark. The single screens and mass markets did better but that won’t be enough unless the big multiplexes pick up hugely today.

The collections are lower than ABCD 2 and not much higher than Gabbar Is Back making it the third best opening of the year the film had good collections in East Punjab, Rajasthan and Bihar. Mumbai did not perform well.

The second day which is Independence day is crucial for the film and it needs to jump 70-80% to get over that 50 crore nett mark for the weekend. A 50 crore nett weekend would be a good weekend result normally but here with such a big holiday it would be average at best as it is very unlikely that the film will add 50% on the weekdays to the weekend figure..

    Saturday 15 August 2015 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Drishyam grossed around 75 lakhs nett on its third Friday which is a 65% drop from last week which is good considering a big new release like Brothers came. The weekend can go to around 3.50 crore nett or higher as it will get the benefit of Independence Day on Saturday. The film has sustained pretty well at the box office but that low initial has cost the films chances of becoming a good success.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan has grossed around 35 lakhs nett on its fifth Friday. The collections are 70% plus down from last week and its run is coming to an end. Still it can get around 1.50 crore nett plus over the weekend which will take its business close to 310.5 crore nett.

The collections of Mission impossible – Rogue Nation are down heavily in week two in the 1.25 crore nett range which is a drop of 80% approx. The film will finish at around 50 crore nett in India which is not much more than the last Mission Impossible film.

  31. Brothers Gets National Holiday Benefit – Sunday Crucial
    Saturday 15 August 2015 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Brothers got benefit of Independence Day as it grossed 21 crore nett but 25 crore was a must considering it is one of the biggest days of the year for box office collections. The growth is the 55% range when it had to be more. A big number has to come on these big national holidays, a Jai Ho which was not a big managed 25 crore nett on its big national holiday and it was day three there while it is day two here. The two day total is 34.50 crore nett.

Still the film has a chance and it is the acid test on Sunday when collections have to hold at similar levels to Saturday. A strong hold will mean a solid number on Monday. A noticeable drop on Sunday will make the weekdays an uphill struggle. .

The bigger jumps did come in circuits like West Bengal and Mysore which were low on Friday and almost doubled up on Saturday. The weekend looks on course for 50-55 crore nett range depending on how Sunday fares which would be decent but of more importance will be a close towards the top end of the range which would a indicate a much better trend..

In 2012, Dabangg2+ETT made more than Rowdy Rathore+HF2+K786+Joker. In 2013, CE made more than OUATIM+S26+Boss combined, as did D3. Even YJHD made more than the 3 combined. last year, Kick and HNY alone made more than Holiday+Entertainment. PK made double this. And this year, BB alone has made more than Brothers+Gabbar+Baby. Also not to mention that out of these dozen films only RR, HF2 and Holiday are clean hits.

But all this doesn’t matter or effect Akki, he’ll continue to somehow put out 4 releases a year. I’m actually really looking forward to Singh Is Bling because it’s been a while since he’s does this type of Rowdy Rathore/SIK comedy

  32. Brothers Day Two Business

    Box Office India Trade Network

Brothers showed good growth of 55-60% on Saturday but as it was a huge holiday for Independence day so the growth should have been more. The first two day business of Brothers is as follows.

    Friday – 13,50,00,000
    Saturday – 21,25,00,000

    TOTAL – 34,75,00,000

Sunday is now crucial for the film and it really needs Sunday to be around its Saturday figure or at least 20 crore nett which should enable the weekdays to hold up.

  35. BOI seem to be moving goalposts with regards to Drishyam and Brothers. With Drishyam, after its initial 1st low week end, BOI were talking about 60cr lifetime (which looked improbable then) as the target for a healthy total. They now seem a bit taken aback that the film has sustained well and it will easily go past the 60cr mark.

With Brothers after its first day, they briefly mentioned 50cr as some kind of target for its first week end. And after its second day, when it looks given that it will cross that mark easily, BOI look even more downbeat.

That said, I have to admit that I am a bit surprised by Brothers’ decent collections. It looked low on hype, the trailers looked poor and I didn’t have much hope with either Karan or Sidharth Malhotra, The first Monday will probably determine its fate.

  38. Brothers Has Heavy Drop On Sunday
    Sunday 16 August 2015 23.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Brothers has dropped heavily on Sunday with collections set to be around 25% down from Saturday as collections look set to be around 15.75 crore nett. The big drop is not the major problem as collections can be 25% down after a big holiday but should not be if next day is a Sunday. The main issue is that the film is just 15 % higher than its Friday total on Sunday.

The film is looking at just sneaking past the 50 crore nett mark which is a good to decent decent weekend but the trend is poor and unless Monday springs a huge surprise the film is heading for big trouble due to huge costs. Basically the Sunday number is too low.

The way the film has performed over the weekend even 100 crore nett is looking a huge task and its not as if its gets to a 100 crore nett that its a successful film. The expectations were of a Singham Returns type of performance which came last year but it seems the film will even fall well below Jai Ho unless Monday shocks and there is a big turnaround in its fortunes.

Agneepath first day was 22 cr but it was national holiday. for Brothers ,second day was national holiday so first day comparison is not alright. Also AP fell by record 50 percent which is unprecedent amd unique case for a hit film.

    Monday 17 August 2015 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Brothers grossed 49.75 crore nett over its first weekend and though the figure is good it does not tell the complete story. The near 50 crore nett business has mainly come due to the big Independence day holiday on Saturday while on Friday and Sunday the film has not performed. The film grossed 13.50 crore nett on Friday, 21.25 crore nett on Saturday and 15 crore nett on Sunday.

The business on Sunday was a killer though the warning signs were there on Saturday as key centers did not grow as they should gave. Still as next day was a Sunday, you would have thought the film to get away with it and a small drop but it was not to be.

The business on Sunday is much lower than a film like Holiday and even lower than Gabbar Is Back. The Sunday drop will probably mean it will be tough going on the weekdays. Due to the fact that the weekend us inflated by the big holiday and the poor trend it has practically no chance to add 50% on weekdays to its weekend business.

Brothers has not performed well in Overseas, the collections will come in at around the $2.25 million mark as business in Gulf (850k apprx) and Pakistan is pretty good but with US at $400,000 apprx and UK at £175,000 apprx, the film wont be going anywhere.

The Worldwide business will be 80 crore apprx which is the second highest Worldwide collection this year after Bajrangi Bhaijaan but that was a huge 187 crore plus in the first weekend and this is not even half. The next best was ABCD 2 which grossed 72 crore apprx which was 40% less cost than Brothers. It is the highest Worldwide weekend for Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra with their previous best being Rowdy Rathore at 71 crore Ek Villain at 78 crore respectively.

Still the 80 crore figure is well below the mark as films like Rowdy Rathore and Ek Villain were not of the scale of Brothers. The film should have notched up a century as a minimum for Worldwide business.

This week’s release ‘Brothers’ got an excellent collection. The film’s weekend numbers stand like this: Friday Rs 15.2 crore, Saturday Rs 21.43 crore and Sunday Rs 15.45 crore. Now, the total collection stands Rs 52.08 crore.
This is Akshay Kumar’s highest weekend and also for Sidharth Malhotra. The audience reactions to ‘Brothers’ have been very positive.
The film took an almost 40% jump on day 2, given that it was a National holiday on account of Independence Day. With this collection ‘Brothers’ records the second highest opening weekend of 2015 – the first spot being held by ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ which collected Rs. 102.6 crores.

The thing about the likes of Trump and Swamy is that if one ties them into a paradigm of political correctness then one is also saying that in some sense they are speaking truth that is otherwise stifled because of the PC police. From my perspective what they are peddling is false (I find the discussion on offensiveness when it comes to these people to be a distraction: it says something, and is shameful, that there was more controversy around Trump’s comments on Kelly than on his far more offensive comments on Mexicans earlier). The appeal is the illusion of authenticity (“straight from the heart” or “says what he feels”), and precisely that ability to surreptitiously normalise radical ideologies (“hey, everyone thinks it, I’m just saying it!”)…

        • That being said, the (once American, but now perhaps broader) trend whereby left-of-center folks start getting into a competition of thin-skinnedness is very troubling to me. This sort of thing puts the individual’s comfort at the center of everything, and even if I agree in particular instances, progressives aren’t doing themselves a favor: because the move whereby convenience (that is, an ideology of convenience or politeness) is moved front-and-center is essentially a reactionary move, or at least no more progressive than the consumption paradigm of the new economy (think of the inventions of the last couple of decades, and how many now simply focus on convenience and amenability)…

They insinuate — and pander to “young India’s” prejudices — about what “the older generation” was like when in instance after instance, we see the old guard delivered better results abroad. Even when they lost they weren’t getting swept out of sight. Our best results abroad were in the late 60s-early 1970s; early-to-mid 1980s; and the half decade or so leading up to 2011. But to hear blowhards like Shastri talk it is as if these guys invented positive intent and aggression (happy to see Manjrekar and Sunny call him out after the Australia tour). It is sad to see how far Indian test cricket has sunk (apparently below Pakistan, Sri Lanka in the sub-continent, and I am not sure we could beat Bangladesh in Bangladesh in a test match series) — never seen such a mismatch between cricketing clout and quality!]

If only these few easy steps could have been followed, the WOM could’ve been +ve to mixed:

    1. Reduce melodramatic scenes and people crying at the drop of a hat. Why can’t you show people being sad without crying!??

    2. Reduce the blaring BGM volume to a half and remove the manipulative BGM in fights or emotional scenes.

    3. Instead of having the full 1st half of emotional drama and 2nd one full of fights, keep a back and forth or non-linear narrative which would have enhanced the storyline. Why bore the audience in 1st half and bombard them with action in the 2nd. Better to have an emotional scene leading to a fight so that both can register in the minds of audience.

    4. Why deviate from younger brother’s back story (in Warrior) of trying to win the tournament ? Sid Malhotra has such a half-baked role and no motivation. A bit of patriotism in his motives (trying to win for the country) would have added to Independence Day feels..

Brothers crashed at the box office on Monday as collections are around 60% down from Friday. The film will collect around 5.75 crore nett on Monday which is disastrous for such a big film leaving it no chance for success.

The writing had been on the wall since Saturday but it managed to stay afloat a little as it was the weekend but Monday has seen the film capitulate. The collections have come down crashing across all circuits in India. The total after four days will be 55.50 crore nett. The film is set for big losses as business has fallen in India, Overseas is weak and films of this genre don’t have a market on TV and on the other side is a big budget.

The week will struggle to reach 70 crore nett which would mean lower business than ABCD 2 in week one. Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty last year grossed 68.64 crore nett in week one and it may finish lower than that unless business in the next two days holds a little.

  58. Akshay Kumar Fighting Lone Battle With Brothers
    Tuesday 18 August 2015 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Brothers has turned out to a huge dissappoimtment at the box office as basically it was just Akshay Kumar fighting a lone battle without any support. This is the case with most of his films but they do not cost over 100 crore. Brothers was coming from a production house like Dharma Productions and had another star Sidharth Malhotra and this combo together should have had some clout with the urban youth in the metros.

But when the film opened on Friday, it was just the regular Akshay Kumar markets taking an opening be it Rajasthan, CI, Punjab or Bihar and the urban centres were dull and were saved to an extent in the evening which was due to the holiday on next day.

A few months back Gabbar Is Back released and it pulled through on Akshay Kumar as it did well in markets where his films normally fo well but that film was for those markets so it opened and held. Here the film opened due Akshay Kumar in these markets but the content was more city type so they crashed on Monday.

Another reason Gabbar Is Back pulled through was the lower cost factor and the fact is that a star alone is not going to pull through a 100 crore plus film unless its comes on Eid, Diwali or Christmas. When a film is bigger it needs support from other factors outside the big star but they were not forthcoming with Brothers.

    • this is a ridiculous report – 100 cr is not a joke! I thought brothers will be a complete washout and will end up as a huge flop. 100 cr will be a respectable total in any case

      Like

      • for a big release on a major date this is a rather poor performance. One cannot call everything that doesn’t flop like Besharam ‘respectable’. Also one cannot call the very same number respectable for Brothers that films like BMB, Barfi, Ek Villain, Two States and so on have already achieved. Films have been hitting 100 crores for years. Now it’s true that for Brothers no one was ever expecting anything huge but certainly more than this. Even accepting Akshay’s poor form recently. speaking for myself I’m not entirely surprised. First off the film never looked very appealing. Secondly it was advertised half-heartedly. Finally this isn’t a subject that has too many multiplex fans to begin with. There’s a certainly a gender divide on this score. It was in any case foolish to remake a somewhat niche film like the Warrior (which wasn’t big even in the US in any sense) and expect to get a big masala grosser out of it.

Will say that Akshay is just not getting to 100 these days. Because of poor films he’s lost his strength with mass audiences and the family audiences have never been on board. when he does sensible films those aren’t the sorts of subjects that can produce big numbers in any case. Now he has Houseful which is a multistarrer. But Singh is Bliing will be his real test. I always root for him but he has no one to blame but himself for the shape he’s in currently. He continued those insane comedies for far too long, even when they were clearly getting worse. He refused to jump onto the masala bandwagon till it was too late. He might have been in salmon’s position with better timing.

A Girl Drags Coca Cola To Court As Denied Date With Hrithik Roshan

When Hrithik asked, ‘Kaho na…pyaar hai?’ many female fans screamed their lungs out and said yes! Back in 2000 Hrithik debuted and the handsome star danced his way to the hearts of his female fans. But there is one fan, Shikha Monga who has been waiting for her date with Hrithik since 15 years!
As a part of a promotional campaign, soft-drink giant Coca Cola had promised one lucky winner a date with the handsome hunk, back in 2000. Chandigarh girl Shikha won the contest, but never had that date. But later she found out that the whole campaign was to a strategy to lure consumers and it was nothing but a sham.
Shikha was given Rs. 5 lakhs in return. But she just wanted a date with her favorite star. She decided to sue company on grounds of cheating. Now the court has exempted the Rs. 2.43 lakhs court fees as she is unmasking a big marketing scam by the cola brand.
What comes of the case, we shall find out. But we do hope Hrithik catches wind of this and reaches out to this fan! A date with him is still possible, Shikha!

Brothers fell again on Tuesday though it was a reasonable 10%. The damage has already been done with the huge falk on Monday and collections are at low kevels. The first five day business of Brothers is as follows.

    Friday – 13,50,00,000
    Saturday – 21,25,00,000
    Sunday – 15,00,00,000
    Monday – 5,35,00,000
    Tuesday 4,80,00,000

    TOTAL – 59,90,00,000

The film will close the week at around 68 crore nett and though competition in week two is not tough in form of All Is Well, it will struggle to put up numbers and end will only be able to add 20-30% to its first week business.

    • that’s their usual commentary.. even when BnB or Guru or whatever was releasing in that phase of his career when he was being celebrated they said the same things. But they’re not alone. there are many others too. When the films are about to release they’re not a big deal because he’s nobody, when they work someone else is responsible and/or the films are not that big anyway, when they fail they’re suddenly the greatest disasters around because evidently more has been invested by everyone in his films than those of top stars. All of this is old hat by now. As someone said here the other say no one survives this long just because they’re someone’s son or whatever. At the end of the day the market is not sentimental about this stuff! But of course it’s hard to place a bet on logic and rationality before those who are delusional or utter fools or both. On BOI otherwise every release of any sort is competition for a massive film like Bajrangi or whatever!

  65. AIW is 127 min, OMG was 123. Shukla is consistent. LOL! I’m however always disappointed when a film isn’t 2.5 hrs or something. I’m old school in this sense! Having said that masala films in the 70s were on average longer than anything before or since. The kids took 30 min to grow up! On the other hand AIW is essentially a road trip deal and you need to keep this sort of thing compressed. Everything else that happens here is probably taken care of quickly as a flashback or a prelude or something. But again unless it’s something like Piku I think a commercial film with enough songs and so forth ought to be 2 hr 20 min at the very least.

    Like

    • Funfact for you Satyam…Dhundte Reh Jaoge was also 127 min 😀

    • Yeah, when otherwise popular filmmakers start making films this short, I begin to get suspicious that the director is “embarrassed” in some way (“hey let’s end the film before people figure out they’ve watched a masala movie!”)

      Like

      • in fairness to Shukla he still probably has too much theater in him. He’s talked about holding the audience’s attention for 2 hrs. A relevant point to be made here is that Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films were usually this length, occasionally longer. But those films were also very focussed and not ‘distracted’ by masala elements or what have you. Perhaps Shukla has made that sort of deal. He does tend to stick to a narrative and here it’s about a road trip. The material he has could easily be stretched out to 2.30 but perhaps the road trip focus prevents this. For instance the falling out between father and son will probably be dealt with in fairly summary fashion. My larger point here would be that many films are not served by a shorter length. One should remain true to the logic of the narrative. This doesn’t prevent a hit but it might disable a greater one. For instance a 2 hr length or whatever was perfect for Piku. Nothing more could have been said or done here. But something only slightly longer than this made Dabanng feel like a rough cut of a longer film. it became huge with all its ionic moments and songs and so on but it couldn’t match Ghajini’s trending let alone anything more than this. Because it was to light as a film with no real resonance, it was simply a collection of great moments. This was enough to get it huge numbers but not much more than this. Again Bajrangi has better trending than practically every other Salman film. A film might be enjoyable enough to become a hit but whether it’s Piku or Ghajini or LRM or whatever you need a film that truly ‘touches’ the viewer in some significant sense. Now Shukla has of course done it with OMG and he (and Abhishek) seem very confident about the film here. And I’m not necessarily arguing otherwise but it is true that by and large filmmakers in most genres are in a hurry to finsih their films these days. this too is related to the multiplex economy where people can squeeze in 2 hr shows at different points during the day no matter what else they’re busy with but longer films on the other hand require more of a ‘plan’. yet another way in which the more authentic film gets compromised. many shorter films might be fine but this entire system disables the longer one on most days.

The film rolls by the end of the year; casting for a sizzling special appearance currently underway.

In 2014, Gauri Shinde took off to New York to script her next film – a hatke story on love.

The filmmaker’s debut hit, English Vinglish, had marked the comeback of Ms Hawa Hawai, Sridevi, and her yet-to-be-titled next, has a one-of-a-kind jodi in the lead. “It’s a different, beautiful story about love. You cannot call it a love story, because Shah Rukh and Alia are not opposite each other. Shah Rukh is too old to be Alia’s lover,” a source close to the development told Mirror.

Meanwhile, Balki too is completely involved in the pre-production of the film. “Even though the casting of the leads is complete, there is still a pending requirement,” the source points out, adding that the unit is now in search of the perfect actress to do a special appearance in the film.
