The visit by shyamalan is getting good reviews. It is blend of comedy and horror. Not a great movie but a very good entertainer with surprising twist. All the reviewers has praised it, shyamalan is back with a shoe string budgeted movie and it is his best since the village.
the trailer looked promising.. it’s doing 65% on rotten tomatoes which is hardly great but yes a huge improvement on the kinds of reviews he’s been getting for a while. But he probably needed 80% or so to be safe in a box office sense. will be interesting to see how he does here. I do root for him though.
It is very small budget movie, it is bound to be success. This weekend predictions are already indicating it will be at top comfortably.

RT reviews are improving fast, and it can improve more. He has just got such bad image especially after so called avatar remake in form of last airbender, that people are not ready to excuse him easily. He needs one more movie like this to regain audience’s faith completely.
Take films. We call it entertainment for the masses. We quote huge box office figures. But let’s look at reality. At an average price of Rs.300 in Mumbai, how many families can really afford to go to a movie? Rs.1200 for a ‘Hum do hamare do’ family. Plus transport and popcorn/Ice cream is a minimum of Rs. 2000 per hit – cinema for the masses? Not likely.
But when you try to say the same in 100 times more words, the message gets lost, LOL

I’m so happy you posted this: I see this every day, and have met a number of people (most notably my driver here in Mumbai) who used to go to the cinema quite regularly but now can’t because of ticket prices. Bajrangi and PK he splurged on with his entire family, and said each cost him 10-15% of his monthly income!
Hero Opens Well – Aided By Salman Factor

Hero opened pretty well with occupancies at around 30% on average. The film has newcomers but with promotions Salman Khan has been shown as the face of the film and also has a hit song to his credit which has enabled the film to start well.
The opening was best in the Mumbai / Gujarat belt and CPCI Rajasthan while North India was lower especially Delhi city and big cities of Punjab. The opening day will come out with a good number but it will be important to have some growth tomorrow if the film is to have a good run. A lot will depend on how North performs as growth becomes hard if plexes of Delhi city and East Punjab are not on board.
The other releases of the week Hum Sab Ullu Hain, Mera Genie Uncle and Tera Mera Tedha Medha all opened to very low response and have little chance at the box office. Mere Genie Uncle even has a 3D version but it won’t really help much.
Hero is set for a decent first day collection as it should reach the 5.75-6 crore nett mark. The film has done well in Mumbai circuit and CPCI Rajasthan but the collections in Delhi city and East Punjab are not up to the mark and this area will be crucial on Saturday if the film is to have a run at the box office
The opening day numbers will be on par with a film like Drishyam and better than bigger films like Piku, Bombay Velvet, Hamari Adhuri Kahani and Detective Byomkesh Bakshi despite having a new cast. The numbers have mainly come due to one song and the Salman Khan factor.
The second day will decide the fate of the film as that North India area has to pick up for the film to have a run at the ticket counters.
Unbelievable… these new comers are opening better than Abhishek!!!! And he has been off of Twitter for what 2-3 weeks… ever since AIW tanked. It’s beyond anything you can fathoms… it’s like critics has just stopped acknowledging his existence even. Has he been any lower than this career wise???
Hate to never say never.. But there is no way I’m magi able that he comes out of this… his film career is pretty much b over.
Welcome Back grossed a decent 2.50-2.75 crore nett on its eight day. The collections have not dropped much despite the new release Hero. The collections are 30-35% down from Thursday which is pretty good considering there was a big release. The film is on course for 100 crore nett business but it will be close run thing. A big 50% plus jump on Saturday will make the 100 crore nett mark a bit easier otherwise it may take 4-5 weeks to get there if it gets there.
Still whether it gets 100 plus or 98 crore nett, it’s pretty much the same thing and the film has done well. The weekend should finish up in the 10-12 crore nett range depending on the growth on Saturday and Sunday. A lot will also depend on how Hero does on Saturday and Sunday.
Welcome Back is a comedy success after a long time and barring West Bengal and Mysore it has done good business in all the circuits with the bonus being strong business overseas.
Just wanted to pick your brains. I’m hoping to go to India in December for three weeks so am currently in the planning stage.
My basic plan thus far is to land in Bombay. Stay there for a week (there’s a wedding), then go delhi/agra/jaipur/jodhpur/udaipur/jaisalmer for a week (not necessarily all those places!), and then go north for a week – Shimla/Ladakh/Leh/Naintal/Missouri/Manali/Srinagar (again, whatever is feasible/accessible/safe).
Any thoughts you have are much appreciated in terms of transport/accommodation/what is worth seeing/anything I’ve missed out or should replace.
Obviously doing lots of web research but reliable first hand info much appreciated!!
Too many places in one week. You will spend more time in travelling than site seeing even if it is by air. I will recommend on my experience Delhi Agra and Jaipur or Shimla Manali. Safety cant be assured anywhere. I mean absolute safety. Shimla tour is notorious for accidents during road trips. I was scared throughout. But worth it for the scenic beauty. Srinagar has become relatively safe but there is always some risk.
Thanks Sanjana. We have to be in Bombay for a week so just have to figure out what to do with the remaining fortnight. I def want to do Delhi/Agra but would love to spend at least a few days at the end in Shimla (or something like that).
We went to Delhi first. Visited Appu garh, Lotus temple, Qutub Minar etc. in a Delhi Darshan bus. Next day we went to Agra mainly for Taj Mahal and were not disappointed. Came back to Delhi, hired a taxi, visited Chandigarh for Nek Chand gardens and Sukhna lake, rose garden etc. Next day we set out for Shimla(the toy like train which passes through so many tunnels), stayed in Shimla for 3 days, went to Kulu, Manali and Rohtang Pass. There were some nice buddhist monasteries. The hills and valleys, the majestic trees, the snowy peaks, Kufri with its skating rink were all enchanting. Remember Mala Sinha starrer Geet? Yeh hariyali aur yeh rasta.
Shimla used to be summer capital during British times and it has many reminders of that era. We went to our driver’s home too which was the only house surrounded by thick forest and had some nice snacks and very good hot tea. It was during night and it was such a world apart. Ethereal. We walked for miles and did not feel tired at all.
Delhi has some of the most beautiful heritage structures, wide treelined roads along with narrow but clean gullies where one can shop for good woollen sweaters and shawls and other crockery which are dead cheap but of good quality.
It was all some years back and I dont know how it is now.
During December and January, there will be heavy fog in Delhi and snowfall in Shimla. Many travellers usually stuckup in these places due to these. Rohtang pass may even be closed if the snowfall is too heavy. We went during Diwali holidays and hence there was no fog and no snowfall.
Sounds like an amazing trip Salim! Might be too hectic to fit in all those places (Agra for instance, requires two busy days IMO to fit in the Taj, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, and the unmissable Itmad-ud-Daula’s tomb, and Akbar’s tomb at Sikandra). Jaipur I personally find overrated, and I suspect if it weren’t so close to Delhi and Agra many tourists wouldn’t bother. Jodhpur’s biggest attraction is stunning: the Meherangarh fort is incredible, and a small exhibition inside also includes some stunning gifts exchanged with the court of Shah Jahan (the Jodhpur royals were mostly loyal Mughal allies). Udaipur is wonderfully atmospheric — it isn’t as if there is one “site” but you really want to spend a couple of days here to soak in the city; it’s wonderfully lit. If you can take a few hours detour for Pratapgarh fort (day trip), the ruins are deeply impressive. And, odd as it may sound, don’t make the mistake many tourists make of “under-visiting” Delhi. There is a crazy amount to see here, of course, but apart from the obvious, do check out the remains of Firozabad, Tughlaqabad, and the Dargah of Bakhtiyar Shah Kaki in Mehrauli (you will anyway go to Mehrauli for Qutb Minar, and the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque ruins– both have to be seen, beautiful and ambiguous at the same time)…

I have never been to Shimla but I do recommend Dalhousie’s faded colonial charms, set amidst the Himalayas… A number of scenes of Lootera were shot there… I have heard from others that Shimla is a bit too commercial and large after places like Dalhousie and Chambaa, but can’t confirm that…
Hero was flat on day two with business likely to be around 6.25 crore nett. The overall business in two days of nearly 13 crore nett is decent but the failure to grow on Saturday may make it tough in the long run. The business failed to grow much in North India multiplexes which was a must as it had low collections there on Friday.
The multiplexes in North India sustain the best so these become very important if the film is to go anywhere especially when there is only a one week window. The film is doing best in areas which tend to fall quicker. The weekend will still get a healthy total of over 20 crore nett but it is all about what happens after.
Heropanti last year had a 6.50 crore nett day one, then a 21 crore nett weekend and lifetime of 51 crore nett so the film can’t be written off just yet but it has to be noted that Heropanti had no competition whatsoever while this has a good holdover with Welcome Back and a major release next week.
Welcome Back showed good growth on its second Saturday. The total business of the film is 80 crore nett in nine days. The first two days of week two for Welcome Back are as follows.
Friday – 2,50,00,000
Saturday – 4,25,00,000
TOTAL – 6,75,00,000
The film film is doing best in North India and Gujarat in its second week. The former is probably because Hero is not so good in this sector.
Saw BB recently..quite liked the movie..watchable. 1st half belongs to lil girl n SK.n second half belongs to lil girl n nawaz.not much conivincing in few parts but in totality good movie compared to movies which is churned out in regular basis..SK had only to gain from this movie as PRDP will garner extra viewers n family audience.i wont be surprised if prdp breaks all the records set till date..
Welcome Back had a decent second weekend grossing a little under 12 crore nett. The film did well on Saturday and Sunday. The total after ten days is a around 85 crore nett. The second weekend business for Welcome Back is as follows.

TOTAL – 11,75,00,000
The film is looking at around 100 crore nett lifetime business but it will be a tight call with the film probably taking 4-5 weeks to get there if it gets there.
‘The Perfect Guy’ Tops the Box Office

LOS ANGELES – For the fifth consecutive weekend, a movie with a predominantly black cast topped the North American box office. And, the horror film “The Visit” overperformed, ending a prolonged cold streak for M. Night Shyamalan.
“The Perfect Guy,” a “Fatal Attraction”-style thriller starring Sanaa Lathan, took in an estimated $26.7 million, or about 50 percent more than analysts had predicted based on pre-release surveys that track audience interest. Screen Gems, a division of Sony Pictures, spent $12 million to make the movie, which received poor reviews. “Straight Outta Compton” and “War Room” have recently led the multiplex race.
“The Visit,” a horror film with a twist ending that was written, directed and produced by Mr. Shyamalan, also did better than analysts had expected. It was a close second, selling about $25.7 million in tickets, according to Rentrak, which compiles box-office data. “The Visit” cost Mr. Shyamalan about $5 million to make and was acquired for distribution through Universal Pictures by Blumhouse Productions.
Receiving solid reviews, “The Visit” was intended to be a back-to-basics project by Mr. Shyamalan, who has suffered a string of misfires as a movie director, among them “After Earth” and “The Last Airbender.”
Female ticket buyers powered the weekend results. Rentrak’s PostTrak service said that the audience for “The Perfect Guy” was 70 percent female; crowds for “The Visit” were 56 percent female.
There’s been a lot of speculation ever since Karan Johar announced Ram Lakhan with Rohit Shetty. Initially, there were talks about Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor doing it. Then someone whispered it was Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh who’d been roped. Others swore that Ranbir Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra were the final choice. Now a lil birdie tells us that Hrithik Roshan might play the character of Lakhan in Rohit Shetty’s Ram Lakhan. And Abhishek Bachchan will reprise Jackie Shroff’s role from the original Subhash Ghai movie. He will play Ram. Now that’s an exciting cast, isn’t it?

Are you serious? AB is pretty much OUT. Beggars can’t be choosers. He is damn lucky to get this project (if true) and esp with a director like Rohit Shetty and backed by KJ. Take it I say.
I am preety sure before ram lakhan jackie was having outstanding films,since ram lakahn playing second fiddle he was out by making poor choices of second fiddle,not sure if hritik will do any much good,both actors need rohit shetty,as i said abhi is still lot to offer,he should produce his own film and take shetty as his director,playing second fiddle will completely end his career,

i hope and hope that AB delivers that 1 proverbial solo hit and is back in the reckoning… I just have a hard time believing he can. Had huge hopes on Raavan and DMD and both failed miserably. AIW was a disaster waiting to happen… Honestly not sure what he was thinking. AB needs a major overhaul. Otherwise he’s going to go down as a mediocre supporting actor.
He needs to take this movie and make sure he can hold his own against Hrithik. If this is another Dhoom2 where Hritihik surpassed him in each and every sense, then it’s really game over for AB.
I think if the respective footage is going to be similar to the original movie, then Abhishek should go for it. Jackie Shroff had a quite good role there. There is no comparison with the D2, D3 or HNY kind of deals. Jackie Shroff was a big star back then. This was no sidekick’s role.
What made the difference in the original movie was the massiness of Lakhan’s character. It was a very massy role, he had a song for the masses and he had the top heroine. Ram’s role was that of a honest police officer and it was quite stereotypical at that time. But the footage was there and Ram had his own moments and his own romantic track as well.
There always is the risk of the footage being reduced in a remake. If the role isn’t being trimmed and the screen time is going to be the same as in the original, Abhishek should really grab it with both hands. If he manages to bring in the intensity required to the role, it won’t harm him at all.
Its really pity so see him in ram character if Abhishek agress this film and also Abhsiek is 3 years younger to Hrithik . Anil kapoor completely dominated Jacki shoroff in Ram kahan. Looks like Abhishek is very stubborn regarding choosing scripts and is not not listening to anyone.
Bajirao Mastani’s Aena Mahal is a splendid spectacle

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his immense love for building grand movie sets. So, when I was invited to visit the much-talked-about ‘Aena Mahal’ for his ambitious forthcoming film Bajirao Mastani at Film City in Mumbai, I was very excited. As I entered the gate, I was politely asked to remove my shoes. A finely ornamented Arch led me on to the magnificent ‘Aena Mahal’. Pristine, finely manicured marble glowed with pride as a plethora of lights-on-top suddenly came alive. It was as if milky whiteness shimmered amidst a deluge of mirrors reflecting rare beauty. Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra have shot for the flagship song ‘Deewani Mastaani’ on this set. There are eight songs in the film with music by Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself.
I was awestruck with the sight of sheer magnificence and then I noticed Sanjay Leela Bhansali sitting on a cot, wearing a simple kurta-pyjama with a gao-takiya in his lap. He was smiling and I felt as if he’s the king of the ‘Aena Mahal’. He asked me to sit next to him. We spoke for a while. He didn’t speak anything about the film. In fact he was more interested in knowing about me. “You thought of interviewing me, and here I’ve interviewed you,” he said with a chuckle. There is something extremely simple and child like in SLB that makes him endearing. He also has a sparkling sense of humour.
It was natural for me to be reminded of the majestic ‘Sheesh Mahal’ from Mughal-e-Azam as I let my eyes feast on the ‘Aena Mahal’ which has been constructed in 45 days and designed by Sujit Shriram and Saloni. According to sources, ‘Aaena Mahal’ is the most expensive set after ‘Sheesh Mahal’ in Mughal-e-Azam. The mirrors have been called from Jaipur and have been personally selected by SLB himself. As per an official press release, 20, 000 intricately designed mirrors have been used to put the set together. Expert craftsmen from Jaipur had been called to work on the embedding of the mirrors to maintain authenticity. The massive set measures 12, 500 square feet. The press release also states that one angle of the frame reflects in the 20, 000 mirrors. The set also has 13 chandeliers which have to be lit up every time with candles and not the traditional lighting.
As I was going out, I met Choreographer/Director Remo Dsouza. He seemed to be excited about the prospect of working with SLB. I had been told that Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh will also be interacting with me but it didn’t happen. I was taken to another set of Bajirao Mastani in Film City. It was on a massive scale with a huge wooden door (entry to the main Palace I believe). In an era of quick-fix set designing, over dependence on VFX, the effort taken to build the sets of Bajirao Mastani is highly commendable. It should be a spectacle on the big screen.
Hero had a decent weekend as it grossed 20.50 crore nett. The film did well in some circuits like Mumbai, Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI and Bihar while underperformed in some others. The first weekend business of Hero is as follows.
Salman Khan is all set to essay the role of a wrestler in his next, Sultan. We hear, the actor will be going through a strict regimen to attain a particular weight and increase his muscular mass. Currently, Salman is wrapping up the shoot of his upcoming Diwali release Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and after that he will first start working on his look.

Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan’s separation and divorce came as a shock to Bollywood lovers, who once adored this real life couple. However, as the two of them are settling in their new lives, another news has taken Bollywood by storm. As per recent reports, Sussanne is moving on, all set to tie the knot for the second time. Apparently, Sussanne will be marrying one of Hrithik’s close friends, though the name of her to-be-husband has not yet been revealed.
Hrithik and Sussanne ended a 13 year old marriage formally last May, when their divorce proceedings finalised. The couple have two sons Hrehaan and Hridhaan, who live with their mom but also spend time with their dad. They are often spotted flying off to exotic vacations with Hrithik and his parents.
While separating, Hrithik and Sussanne avoided any mud-slinging and were respectful towards each other. Katti Batti is going to depend on word of mouth with the urban audiences and the growth on Saturday will decide the fate of the film. The opening will be an issue for the film as it is niche, the music has not taken off and on top off that a very weak male lead who has no draw. The last film Gori Tere Oyaar Mein was a washout and even before that the initials were weak in core Hindi markets. There is Kangana Ranaut coming of a blockbuster film like Tanu Weds Manu Returns but that won’t help much as it was the content that worked there in a big way and not star pull.
The director is the same as last week’s Hero and has a very bad track record which also does not help. Hero had ready made blockbuster content and the film opened well enough but still misfired and the hope with Katti Batti will be that the director has somehow done a better job with this film.
The pluses are that the competition is weak so it has a week to itself. The failure of Hero is also a plus as it has no holdover film competing with it as Welcome Back is coming to the end of its run. But these pluses are external and to get a start it needed an internal plus or two.
The multiplex revolution in Hindi cinema started in the mid 2000’s and has grown tremendously since then but what was then a multiplex film is not anymore though in the industry the same sort of film is called a multiplex film.
Films like Taare Zameen Par and Jaane Tu.. Ya Jaane Na did well in the multiplexes and were correctly called multiplex hits but at the time there were around 200 odd multiplexes and 80% of them were situated in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkatta or in the satellite towns of these cities and that is where these films did well. Today there are over 700 multiplexes in India but the places mentioned above have only 275 of the 700 plus which is less than 40%
Still films like Katti Batti and Shaandaar are called multiplex films when in fact they are unlikely to work in over 60% of the multiplexes in India. If these films work they will work in the same places as films like Taare Zameen Par and Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Naa worked which was then around 160 of the 200 odd multipexes and today its 275 of the 700 odd multiplexes. Most of the other 425 multiplexes have a different taste to what is generally thought to be a multiplex film.
These multiplexes outside the metros behave more like the good single screens in cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Lucknow or Surat. Basically unlike before there is no multiplex film today, you are either a metro film or a pan India film like it was before the advent of multiplexes. The multiplex film before had potential to reach 55 crore nett (Taare Zameen Par was tax free so went a little higher) before and today that film is the metro film and can do 75% more or maybe a little more like a Barfi if distributors are clever with ticket pricing. The pan India film is unlimited and can go anywhere and as multiplexes go further into tier 2 and tier 3 cities the footfalls will only go up for films that do find huge acceptance all over.
There are some costly films being made at present and will have huge expectations on release with big numbers expected but its pretty easy to call even now that they will fall below expectations as they only have 275 cinema halls where they have a chance to be accepted, this may go up to 300 next year but that will hardly make a difference.

Its Cinema for the Elite who hide their scorn for themselves behind laughing at what they themselves nurture. I’m so happy you posted this: I see this every day, and have met a number of people (most notably my driver here in Mumbai) who used to go to the cinema quite regularly but now can’t because of ticket prices. Bajrangi and PK he splurged on with his entire family, and said each cost him 10-15% of his monthly income!

Hero Opens Well – Aided By Salman Factor

Hero opened pretty well with occupancies at around 30% on average. The film has newcomers but with promotions Salman Khan has been shown as the face of the film and also has a hit song to his credit which has enabled the film to start well.
The opening was best in the Mumbai / Gujarat belt and CPCI Rajasthan while North India was lower especially Delhi city and big cities of Punjab. The opening day will come out with a good number but it will be important to have some growth tomorrow if the film is to have a good run. A lot will depend on how North performs as growth becomes hard if plexes of Delhi city and East Punjab are not on board.
The other releases of the week Hum Sab Ullu Hain, Mera Genie Uncle and Tera Mera Tedha Medha all opened to very low response and have little chance at the box office. Mere Genie Uncle even has a 3D version but it won’t really help much.

Hero is set for a decent first day collection as it should reach the 5.75-6 crore nett mark. The film has done well in Mumbai circuit and CPCI Rajasthan but the collections in Delhi city and East Punjab are not up to the mark and this area will be crucial on Saturday if the film is to have a run at the box office
The opening day numbers will be on par with a film like Drishyam and better than bigger films like Piku, Bombay Velvet, Hamari Adhuri Kahani and Detective Byomkesh Bakshi despite having a new cast. The numbers have mainly come due to one song and the Salman Khan factor.
The second day will decide the fate of the film as that North India area has to pick up for the film to have a run at the ticket counters.

Unbelievable… these new comers are opening better than Abhishek!!!! And he has been off of Twitter for what 2-3 weeks… ever since AIW tanked. It’s beyond anything you can fathoms… it’s like critics has just stopped acknowledging his existence even. Has he been any lower than this career wise???
Hate to never say never.. But there is no way I’m magi able that he comes out of this… his film career is pretty much b over.

Welcome Back grossed a decent 2.50-2.75 crore nett on its eight day. The collections have not dropped much despite the new release Hero. The collections are 30-35% down from Thursday which is pretty good considering there was a big release. The film is on course for 100 crore nett business but it will be close run thing. A big 50% plus jump on Saturday will make the 100 crore nett mark a bit easier otherwise it may take 4-5 weeks to get there if it gets there.
Still whether it gets 100 plus or 98 crore nett, it’s pretty much the same thing and the film has done well. The weekend should finish up in the 10-12 crore nett range depending on the growth on Saturday and Sunday. A lot will also depend on how Hero does on Saturday and Sunday.
Welcome Back is a comedy success after a long time and barring West Bengal and Mysore it has done good business in all the circuits with the bonus being strong business overseas.

Dear all,
Just wanted to pick your brains. I’m hoping to go to India in December for three weeks so am currently in the planning stage.
My basic plan thus far is to land in Bombay. Stay there for a week (there’s a wedding), then go delhi/agra/jaipur/jodhpur/udaipur/jaisalmer for a week (not necessarily all those places!), and then go north for a week – Shimla/Ladakh/Leh/Naintal/Missouri/Manali/Srinagar (again, whatever is feasible/accessible/safe).
Any thoughts you have are much appreciated in terms of transport/accommodation/what is worth seeing/anything I’ve missed out or should replace.
Obviously doing lots of web research but reliable first hand info much appreciated!!

Too many places in one week. You will spend more time in travelling than site seeing even if it is by air. I will recommend on my experience Delhi Agra and Jaipur or Shimla Manali. Safety cant be assured anywhere. I mean absolute safety. Shimla tour is notorious for accidents during road trips. I was scared throughout. But worth it for the scenic beauty. Srinagar has become relatively safe but there is always some risk.

We went to Delhi first. Visited Appu garh, Lotus temple, Qutub Minar etc. in a Delhi Darshan bus. Next day we went to Agra mainly for Taj Mahal and were not disappointed. Came back to Delhi, hired a taxi, visited Chandigarh for Nek Chand gardens and Sukhna lake, rose garden etc. Next day we set out for Shimla(the toy like train which passes through so many tunnels), stayed in Shimla for 3 days, went to Kulu, Manali and Rohtang Pass. There were some nice buddhist monasteries. The hills and valleys, the majestic trees, the snowy peaks, Kufri with its skating rink were all enchanting. Remember Mala Sinha starrer Geet? Yeh hariyali aur yeh rasta.
Shimla used to be summer capital during British times and it has many reminders of that era. We went to our driver’s home too which was the only house surrounded by thick forest and had some nice snacks and very good hot tea. It was during night and it was such a world apart. Ethereal. We walked for miles and did not feel tired at all.
Delhi has some of the most beautiful heritage structures, wide treelined roads along with narrow but clean gullies where one can shop for good woollen sweaters and shawls and other crockery which are dead cheap but of good quality.
It was all some years back and I dont know how it is now.

During December and January, there will be heavy fog in Delhi and snowfall in Shimla. Many travellers usually stuckup in these places due to these. Rohtang pass may even be closed if the snowfall is too heavy. We went during Diwali holidays and hence there was no fog and no snowfall.

Sounds like an amazing trip Salim! Might be too hectic to fit in all those places (Agra for instance, requires two busy days IMO to fit in the Taj, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, and the unmissable Itmad-ud-Daula’s tomb, and Akbar’s tomb at Sikandra). Jaipur I personally find overrated, and I suspect if it weren’t so close to Delhi and Agra many tourists wouldn’t bother. Jodhpur’s biggest attraction is stunning: the Meherangarh fort is incredible, and a small exhibition inside also includes some stunning gifts exchanged with the court of Shah Jahan (the Jodhpur royals were mostly loyal Mughal allies). Udaipur is wonderfully atmospheric — it isn’t as if there is one “site” but you really want to spend a couple of days here to soak in the city; it’s wonderfully lit. If you can take a few hours detour for Pratapgarh fort (day trip), the ruins are deeply impressive. And, odd as it may sound, don’t make the mistake many tourists make of “under-visiting” Delhi. There is a crazy amount to see here, of course, but apart from the obvious, do check out the remains of Firozabad, Tughlaqabad, and the Dargah of Bakhtiyar Shah Kaki in Mehrauli (you will anyway go to Mehrauli for Qutb Minar, and the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque ruins– both have to be seen, beautiful and ambiguous at the same time)…

I have never been to Shimla but I do recommend Dalhousie’s faded colonial charms, set amidst the Himalayas… A number of scenes of Lootera were shot there… I have heard from others that Shimla is a bit too commercial and large after places like Dalhousie and Chambaa, but can’t confirm that…

Hero was flat on day two with business likely to be around 6.25 crore nett. The overall business in two days of nearly 13 crore nett is decent but the failure to grow on Saturday may make it tough in the long run. The business failed to grow much in North India multiplexes which was a must as it had low collections there on Friday.
The multiplexes in North India sustain the best so these become very important if the film is to go anywhere especially when there is only a one week window. The film is doing best in areas which tend to fall quicker. The weekend will still get a healthy total of over 20 crore nett but it is all about what happens after.
Heropanti last year had a 6.50 crore nett day one, then a 21 crore nett weekend and lifetime of 51 crore nett so the film can’t be written off just yet but it has to be noted that Heropanti had no competition whatsoever while this has a good holdover with Welcome Back and a major release next week.

Saturday – 4,25,00,000

The film film is doing best in North India and Gujarat in its second week. The former is probably because Hero is not so good in this sector.

Saw BB recently..quite liked the movie..watchable. 1st half belongs to lil girl n SK.n second half belongs to lil girl n nawaz.not much conivincing in few parts but in totality good movie compared to movies which is churned out in regular basis..SK had only to gain from this movie as PRDP will garner extra viewers n family audience.i wont be surprised if prdp breaks all the records set till date..

Welcome Back had a decent second weekend grossing a little under 12 crore nett. The film did well on Saturday and Sunday. The total after ten days is a around 85 crore nett. The second weekend business for Welcome Back is as follows.
Friday – 2,50,00,000
Saturday – 4,25,00,000
Sunday – 5,00,00,000
TOTAL – 11,75,00,000
The film is looking at around 100 crore nett lifetime business but it will be a tight call with the film probably taking 4-5 weeks to get there if it gets there.

“The Perfect Guy,” a “Fatal Attraction”-style thriller starring Sanaa Lathan, took in an estimated $26.7 million, or about 50 percent more than analysts had predicted based on pre-release surveys that track audience interest. Screen Gems, a division of Sony Pictures, spent $12 million to make the movie, which received poor reviews. “Straight Outta Compton” and “War Room” have recently led the multiplex race.
“The Visit,” a horror film with a twist ending that was written, directed and produced by Mr. Shyamalan, also did better than analysts had expected. It was a close second, selling about $25.7 million in tickets, according to Rentrak, which compiles box-office data. “The Visit” cost Mr. Shyamalan about $5 million to make and was acquired for distribution through Universal Pictures by Blumhouse Productions.
Receiving solid reviews, “The Visit” was intended to be a back-to-basics project by Mr. Shyamalan, who has suffered a string of misfires as a movie director, among them “After Earth” and “The Last Airbender.”
Female ticket buyers powered the weekend results. Rentrak’s PostTrak service said that the audience for “The Perfect Guy” was 70 percent female; crowds for “The Visit” were 56 percent female.

There’s been a lot of speculation ever since Karan Johar announced Ram Lakhan with Rohit Shetty. Initially, there were talks about Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor doing it. Then someone whispered it was Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh who’d been roped. Others swore that Ranbir Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra were the final choice. Now a lil birdie tells us that Hrithik Roshan might play the character of Lakhan in Rohit Shetty’s Ram Lakhan. And Abhishek Bachchan will reprise Jackie Shroff’s role from the original Subhash Ghai movie. He will play Ram. Now that’s an exciting cast, isn’t it?

I am preety sure before ram lakhan jackie was having outstanding films,since ram lakahn playing second fiddle he was out by making poor choices of second fiddle,not sure if hritik will do any much good,both actors need rohit shetty,as i said abhi is still lot to offer,he should produce his own film and take shetty as his director,playing second fiddle will completely end his career,

i hope and hope that AB delivers that 1 proverbial solo hit and is back in the reckoning… I just have a hard time believing he can. Had huge hopes on Raavan and DMD and both failed miserably. AIW was a disaster waiting to happen… Honestly not sure what he was thinking. AB needs a major overhaul. Otherwise he’s going to go down as a mediocre supporting actor.
He needs to take this movie and make sure he can hold his own against Hrithik. If this is another Dhoom2 where Hritihik surpassed him in each and every sense, then it’s really game over for AB.

I think if the respective footage is going to be similar to the original movie, then Abhishek should go for it. Jackie Shroff had a quite good role there. There is no comparison with the D2, D3 or HNY kind of deals. Jackie Shroff was a big star back then. This was no sidekick’s role.
What made the difference in the original movie was the massiness of Lakhan’s character. It was a very massy role, he had a song for the masses and he had the top heroine. Ram’s role was that of a honest police officer and it was quite stereotypical at that time. But the footage was there and Ram had his own moments and his own romantic track as well.
There always is the risk of the footage being reduced in a remake. If the role isn’t being trimmed and the screen time is going to be the same as in the original, Abhishek should really grab it with both hands. If he manages to bring in the intensity required to the role, it won’t harm him at all.

Bajirao Mastani’s Aena Mahal is a splendid spectacle

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his immense love for building grand movie sets. So, when I was invited to visit the much-talked-about ‘Aena Mahal’ for his ambitious forthcoming film Bajirao Mastani at Film City in Mumbai, I was very excited. As I entered the gate, I was politely asked to remove my shoes. A finely ornamented Arch led me on to the magnificent ‘Aena Mahal’. Pristine, finely manicured marble glowed with pride as a plethora of lights-on-top suddenly came alive. It was as if milky whiteness shimmered amidst a deluge of mirrors reflecting rare beauty. Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra have shot for the flagship song ‘Deewani Mastaani’ on this set. There are eight songs in the film with music by Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself.
I was awestruck with the sight of sheer magnificence and then I noticed Sanjay Leela Bhansali sitting on a cot, wearing a simple kurta-pyjama with a gao-takiya in his lap. He was smiling and I felt as if he’s the king of the ‘Aena Mahal’. He asked me to sit next to him. We spoke for a while. He didn’t speak anything about the film. In fact he was more interested in knowing about me. “You thought of interviewing me, and here I’ve interviewed you,” he said with a chuckle. There is something extremely simple and child like in SLB that makes him endearing. He also has a sparkling sense of humour.
It was natural for me to be reminded of the majestic ‘Sheesh Mahal’ from Mughal-e-Azam as I let my eyes feast on the ‘Aena Mahal’ which has been constructed in 45 days and designed by Sujit Shriram and Saloni. According to sources, ‘Aaena Mahal’ is the most expensive set after ‘Sheesh Mahal’ in Mughal-e-Azam. The mirrors have been called from Jaipur and have been personally selected by SLB himself. As per an official press release, 20, 000 intricately designed mirrors have been used to put the set together. Expert craftsmen from Jaipur had been called to work on the embedding of the mirrors to maintain authenticity. The massive set measures 12, 500 square feet. The press release also states that one angle of the frame reflects in the 20, 000 mirrors. The set also has 13 chandeliers which have to be lit up every time with candles and not the traditional lighting.
As I was going out, I met Choreographer/Director Remo Dsouza. He seemed to be excited about the prospect of working with SLB. I had been told that Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh will also be interacting with me but it didn’t happen. I was taken to another set of Bajirao Mastani in Film City. It was on a massive scale with a huge wooden door (entry to the main Palace I believe). In an era of quick-fix set designing, over dependence on VFX, the effort taken to build the sets of Bajirao Mastani is highly commendable. It should be a spectacle on the big screen.

Salman Khan is all set to essay the role of a wrestler in his next, Sultan. We hear, the actor will be going through a strict regimen to attain a particular weight and increase his muscular mass. Katti Batti is going to depend on word of mouth with the urban audiences and the growth on Saturday will decide the fate of the film. The opening will be an issue for the film as it is niche, the music has not taken off and on top off that a very weak male lead who has no draw. The last film Gori Tere Oyaar Mein was a washout and even before that the initials were weak in core Hindi markets. There is Kangana Ranaut coming of a blockbuster film like Tanu Weds Manu Returns but that won’t help much as it was the content that worked there in a big way and not star pull.
The director is the same as last week’s Hero and has a very bad track record which also does not help. Hero had ready made blockbuster content and the film opened well enough but still misfired and the hope with Katti Batti will be that the director has somehow done a better job with this film.
The pluses are that the competition is weak so it has a week to itself. The failure of Hero is also a plus as it has no holdover film competing with it as Welcome Back is coming to the end of its run. But these pluses are external and to get a start it needed an internal plus or two.

So, Hero is being tagged as a failure. Probably means that the collections have dropped heavily during the week days.
Post BB, it’s been quite a dull phase at the BO. Except for Welcome Back and to a lesser extent, Drishyam, there have been some real disasters.
Brothers (83cr), AIW (16cr) and Phantom (53cr) have all under-performed massively. Hero seems to have joined the list of failures.

The multiplex revolution in Hindi cinema started in the mid 2000’s and has grown tremendously since then but what was then a multiplex film is not anymore though in the industry the same sort of film is called a multiplex film.
Films like Taare Zameen Par and Jaane Tu.. Ya Jaane Na did well in the multiplexes and were correctly called multiplex hits but at the time there were around 200 odd multiplexes and 80% of them were situated in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkatta or in the satellite towns of these cities and that is where these films did well. Today there are over 700 multiplexes in India but the places mentioned above have only 275 of the 700 plus which is less than 40%
Still films like Katti Batti and Shaandaar are called multiplex films when in fact they are unlikely to work in over 60% of the multiplexes in India. If these films work they will work in the same places as films like Taare Zameen Par and Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Naa worked which was then around 160 of the 200 odd multipexes and today its 275 of the 700 odd multiplexes. Most of the other 425 multiplexes have a different taste to what is generally thought to be a multiplex film.
These multiplexes outside the metros behave more like the good single screens in cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Lucknow or Surat. Basically unlike before there is no multiplex film today, you are either a metro film or a pan India film like it was before the advent of multiplexes. The multiplex film before had potential to reach 55 crore nett (Taare Zameen Par was tax free so went a little higher) before and today that film is the metro film and can do 75% more or maybe a little more like a Barfi if distributors are clever with ticket pricing. The pan India film is unlimited and can go anywhere and as multiplexes go further into tier 2 and tier 3 cities the footfalls will only go up for films that do find huge acceptance all over.
There are some costly films being made at present and will have huge expectations on release with big numbers expected but its pretty easy to call even now that they will fall below expectations as they only have 275 cinema halls where they have a chance to be accepted, this may go up to 300 next year but that will hardly make a difference.
