  1. Raja Sen on Jazabaa

However, those are wonderfully written parts in films helmed by fine directors, but does Irrfan have the bulletproof screen-presence required for blockbuster buffoonery? Can he commit to a moronic script? Does he have, I dare ask, the Khanhood?

Sanjay Gupta’s Jazbaa says no. (And for that we should all heave a sigh of relief.)

His filmography over the last ten yearsincludes: The Namesake, The Darjeeling Limited, A Mighty Heart, Life in a Metro, Aaaja Nach Le, Mumbai Meri Jaan, Sunday, New York I Love You, Slumdog Millionaire, New York, Billu, Maqbool, Yeh Saali Zindagi, Haasil, 7 Khoon Maaf, Pan Singh Tomar, The Amazing Spiderman, Life of Pi, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, The Luncbox, Qissa, D-Day, Haider, Piku, Jurassic World, Talvar. Show me another actior who has a better set of 25 films over a decade, then we will discuss who can afford to be choosy, and who cannot.

Female oriented thriller and its going well. Ash 40 something heroine and the film has buzz. Lets just ignore that.

Pan Singh Tomar, The Luncbox, The Namesake, Life of Pi, Yeh Saali Zindagi, The Warrior, Life in a Metro, Haasil, Qissa, Talvar… all needed Irrfan, badly. And as roles they offered, these are anything but avergae. I would ,like to see the filmograohy of another star who ‘ could afford to be more choosy… with comptrable ten films and ten roles.

  5. Jazbaa Depending On Word Of Mouth – Slow Start
    Friday 09 October 2015 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jazbaa had a slow start of around 20% ans will be totally dependent on word of mouth. The film will do better in the evening as is a film more for the adult audience than the youth. These types tend to come out higher than what they look like in the morning shows.

It will be about how much the film can grow in the evening shows and then the all important follow up on Saturday. The film is the only release and last week’s main release Singh Is Bling has crashed in most circuits so that is an advantage as a big film on a good run would have made it hard.

The last Aishwarya Rai film was Guzaarish released in 2010 which opened to 3.82 crore nett. The highest is Dhoom 2 in 2006 which had an opening day of 5.85 crore nett.

The collections of Singh Is Bling are down heavily and looks that North India will be contributing 50% of all India in week two. Talvar has maintained very well and has increased shows in most of the theatres in the metros.

The first look at Universal Pictures’ Hail, Caesar! has dropped, and it has all the hallmarks of a killer Joel Coen and Ethan Coen pic. Based on the trailer, this one seems to be picking from the best of the brothers’ vault: a dash of the period Hollywood feel that could make it a sequel to Barton Fink, a kidnapping mystery like the one that tied the room together in The Big Lebowski (and less serious a crime than, say, No Country For Old Men or Fargo), and of course lines uttered by a embarrassment-of-riches cast (many Coen alums) including Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormand.

  12. Jazbaa grossed 3.75 crore nett apprx on day one. The film is dependent on word of mouth as are all films with female protagonists and its fate will depend on the business it does on Saturday. The film has mainly done business in Mumbai and Delhi / UP with other circuits performing lower.

The film will pick up on Saturday and show growth but it will depend on how much growth it is. These type of films can easily show 20-30% growth on Saturday which has become the the norm today but here the growth will have to be more towards the 50% range if the film is to really have a run at the box office and hold well on the weekdays.

The plus for the film is no big competition next week but to take advantage of that the big growth on Saturday is a must.

  13. Talvar continued its strong run with collections around 1.60-1.65 crore nett on day eight which same as the previous day. The first day had grossed 2.50 crore nett but that was a national holiday so if you take outh the national holiday factor, the collections on day eight are similar to the real value of day one.

The film will show big growth on Saturday and the weekend business of the film will be better than the big budget Singh Is Bling which released on the same day. The eight figures ensure that Talvar is set for a good run at the box office till Diwali which is four weeks away.

Looking at the trend the film will cross 30 crore nett which is a huge total for a film like this. It easily beats other art house type films which managed to collect at the box office like The Lunchbox, and Peepli Live. the Lunchbox grossed 21 crore nett and Peepli Live with support of Aamir Khan banner did 29 crore nett.

  17. Singh Is Bling Falls Further On Day Eight
    Saturday 10 October 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Singh Is Bling had another big fall on day eight as it grossed around 1.50-1.60 crore nett. The collections have fallen badly in East Punjab also with just 25 lakhs nett from 2.65 crore nett in day one though that was a national holiday. The collections in Delhi /UP are 45 lakhs with Mumbai in the same range.

The film is hardly collecting in Southern and Eastern India (Bihar better than rest). The total of the film is eight days is 63.50 crore nett and though there will be growth on Saturday it will hardly help as the collections are at a low level now. The weekend can go to around 6 crore nett.

The film has basically not performed and the only plus if it can be called one is that the crash is not as bad as Brothers which grossed 6 crore nett in the whole of the second week. Singh Is Bling will finish with business of around 75 crore nett.

  18. Seeing this just one week after the masterly ‘Talvar’ this could have been underwhelming. But I was totally engrossed and thoroughly enjoyed this thriller with a twist in the end. It was a good story and it was fairly well told. The tension point is brought in early on and the narrative hurtles to the climax at a good speed, with no distractions. It is pretty lean narrative with almost no flab. Thanks to competent performances by Shabana, Irrfan and Aishwarya, the human side of these three main characters also shine through.

The writing is pretty good and I quite liked the rhetorical flourishes of Kamalesh Pandey. ‘ Rishteay pe bhoriash aur mobile pe network na ho to log game khelne lag jaatay hain. Tum kauns agane khel rahi ho?’ Irrfan asks Aishwarya. People have said Ash shrieks too much. For god sake people when traumatized do shriek. And Hollwood-style understatement is not the only school of acting that evry actor has to come from. The bottom-line : Ash’s performance touches you and her emoting seems pretty real. She looks exquisitely beautiful, as frail and as perfect as porcelain, but she also brings a certain gravitas to her persona which makes the proceedings quite believable. After Piku and Talvar, this is the third film that Irrfan breathes life into with his breezy, stylish performance. And Shaban Azmi is an inspired piece of casting that takes the film a notch or two higher.

Sanjay Gupta’s direction stays on course throughout, keeping the film practically song-less. The very brief sinppets of two songs used are evocative and effective mood-enhancers. Gupta has the flair for the thriller narrative, though he does simplify things for our audiences used to spoon-feeding, sacrificing subtlety and depth for clarity. But there is enough intrigue still in the narrative to keep you hooked from beginning to end. And I like the calibrated happy ending and the parting line, ‘Mohabbat hai iss liiye jaane diya, zid hota to baahon mein hoti’.

After ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisa’, ‘NH 10’, ‘Piku’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu 2’, this is the fifth film this year with a woman at the centre of the narrative that’s doing well. And there Talvar directed by a woman, More power to the talented ladies of Bollywood, I say!

  20. GUARDIAN REVIEW OF JAZBAA

As Bollywood royalty, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan would have been forgiven for easing herself back in upon her return from maternity leave. It’s to her credit, then, that she’s instead taken on Jazbaa, an appreciably pulpy remake of the 2007 Korean thriller Seven Days. Granted, Hindi cinema’s usual maternal-love fetish is somewhere hereabouts, but it’s secondary to another concern: what happens when those with dirty hands let those they care about slip through their fingers. Every one of its characters – from the highest MP to the lowliest thug – is working the system. An end-credit card highlighting Indian rape stats repositions Sanjay Gupta’s film as a critique of a system that needs to work harder itself.
    …….
Gupta is more assured around Anu’s sidekick Inspector Yohaan (Irrfan Khan), recently suspended but insistent that, in the scheme of things, he’s not so corrupt: as he points out, his going rate was 1.5 crore, where the average is ten. You accept, as you would in a well-penned airport novel, that he happens to have been Anu’s childhood friend; also that he’s been crushing on our heroine. Khan’s signature subtlety isn’t much required, but this chewy character part affords him countless gruffly louche flourishes: to one suspect’s pleas for justice, the Inspector snickers “You’ve been watching too much Hollywood; this is Bollywood”, before smashing a chair over the unfortunate.

Visually, it’s overwrought: all torrential downpours and yellowy-green filters the colour of nausea. Yet the byplay between Anu and the dead student’s mother is bolstered by Shabana Azmi’s commanding presence in the latter role; your sympathies do swing back-and-forth. And it’s a nicely ambivalent touch that the matter is resolved only as a result of an underworld powerplay; the moral, not so far removed from the moral of a show like House of Cards, is you make your deals where you can. For all the rot Gupta dwells on, there’s something refreshing about Jazbaa within the wider Bollywood context: it’ll make for brisk, pacy, adult entertainment – whichever side of the law you’re on.

  29. EXACTLY MY FEELINGS. RANGAN KIND OF STOLE MY WORDS FROM MY MOUTH.

I especially enjoyed the last half hour – it’s sleazy pulp heaven. After a generally bleak view of courtrooms in films like Court and Talvar, it’s fun to see the place crackling with Perry Mason energy. I wish the film had had more of Irrfan Khan though. He plays Anuradha’s friend Yohan, but on the side, he seems to be auditioning for the lead role in a Salim-Javed script. There were hints of the masala hero inside him in Haider, where he made a smashing entrance. Then Talvar saw him as a starry investigator. Here, he turns full-blown star. He gets superb Kamlesh Pandey lines to chew on, and he spits them out with unbelievable flair. Main khud langar ki line mein khada hoon, tere liye daawat kahaan se laaoonga? Here’s another: Neend mashooqa ki tarah hoti hai. Waqt na do to rooth ke chali jaati hai. At one point, the film morphs into a music video. We just see Irrfan drinking, putting a face to these amazing lyrics: Jaane tere shehar ka kya iraada hai / Aasmaan kum, parindey zyada hain. The world-weariness he channels here, the casual way he tosses off those florid declamations (perfectly walking the prose-poetry tightrope) made me think of Amitabh Bachchan, who was an equally unconventional-looking (and tall) leading man. None of today’s heroes can pull these lines off, and you don’t have to recall Imran Khan in the ill-fated Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! to underline the point. How strange that the strongest links to our older commercial cinema seem to lie in the “art film” actors of today. I kept imagining Irrfan Khan’s hero here pitted against Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s gloriously entertaining villain in Kick. It would be the masala blockbuster of 1975.

“Jazbaa”… Irrfan kills it in a just-about-watchable pulp thriller

  33. Surila singer – Abhijeet, you give India, a bad name!
By Faridoon Shahryar, Oct 10, 2015

“These qawwals don’t come here on their marit but due to paki Dalals #prestitute and @MaheshNBhatt ,” ranted singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya on twitter. This was one of the objectionable tweets of Abhijeet post his controversial statement where he called legendary Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali as a “Dengue artist from a terrorist country”. “#GhulamGigCancelled kitni baar bhagaya bt these shameless hv no self respect no work except terrorism bt we feed them along wd prestitutes,” Abhijeet ranted. When he got a backlash on twitter and was reminded that Ghulam Ali sahab’s concert was in the memory of Jagjit Singh sahab, Abhijeet was least remorseful.

Here are a few tweets of Abhijeet that reflect his deeply disturbed ‘state-of-mind’. We won’t be able to post a few of the tweets that he retweeted as they are in extremely bad taste.

“Nation and patriotism 1st .. Gana bajana later, #Shameless anti national Indian Media and politicians ..”

“Shut up.. Shaadi ke qwalon ko humne sar pe chadhaya ..wait jis din tum hawala singers ko asli padegi .. My foot”

“Aa jao .. Inki ..to..beep. Ko ..beep Hain.. Humari political parties sirf bhokti hain”

It is widely known that Abhijeet has made distasteful statements in the past about top movie stars, music companies and filmmakers. He has made weird allegations against Shah Rukh Khan and accused a music company of lifting one of his no-one-heard-it-before private album song and turning it into a superhit movie song. Almost no one wants to work with the insurmountably arrogant and brash singer any more. While Ghulam Ali sahab, despite his old age, is still very relevant and is invited to perform, Abhijeet is a has-been singer who hasn’t had anything notable to his credit in the last 15 years. He is good for judging singing reality shows as he brings in the TRPs with his nasty fights.

When Abhijeet derogatorily calls Ghulam Ali sahab a ‘Qawwal’, obviously he doesn’t know the difference between a Ghazal singer and a Qawwal. Also, Qawwali singing is one of the most cherished forms of singing that is revered and loved by millions in India as well as abroad across all religions. The ‘Artiste’ in him is obviously dead. He seems to have given up. The only way for him to stay in the ‘news’ is by making provocative statements now and then. The best way to deal with such people is to ignore them. Bollywood has been ignoring him for a long time now. It is time the media stops taking him seriously as well. All that I can say is that Shame on you Abhijeet, you give India and the artiste community a bad name!

Salman Khan reportedly recently had a tiff with singer, Sonu Nigam. If a report on Bollywoodlife.com is to be believed then Salman Khan, who was one of the top stars attending the event held by T-Series, hosted by Sonu Nigam, took digs at the singer when he was invited to the stage. The report states that the Bajrangi Bhaijaan seemed to be enjoying himself throughout the evening, humming songs to himself. However, things reportedly took a turn for the worst when the superstar was called on the stage. Apparently, Salman claimed that he did not need a playback singer to croon for him in the movies. A source has been quoted in the report as saying that Sonu looked visibly upset with Salman’s comments. He further asserted that Salman was adamant to prove that singers have a very easy job to do and that he even went on to say that he has a decent voice that can be bettered with technology and made to sound good. The source adds that Bhai then boasted that he wouldn’t need a Sonu Nigam or anyone else to croon for him. Apparently, a fun segment was slated to be shot with the two of them in it but following the spat, it was cancelled.

Thrilled by the support he received, Akshay continues to do the good deed, requesting friends and others to loosen their purse strings for the purpose. A source close to Akshay says, “People don’t mind giving money as they know that he will ensure that the money reaches the farmers directly. The people he meets, mostly non-industry people, have been making generous donations, to the tune of Rs 10-15 lakh. This shows that people do want to help; it is just they want to be sure that it reaches the deserving people.”

Akshay has also been dipping into his own pocket to keep the movement alive. Quite recently, he donated Rs 50 lakh to the Maharashtra government’s flagship Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan (local water conservation scheme).

Apart from this, the actor has got in touch with banks in some of the drought affected areas to draw up a list of farmers struggling with repayment of loans. Akshay is keen to settle the debt of farmers without their knowledge. “Imagine how happy the farmer will feel when he gets a letter saying that all his loans have been cleared,” adds the source.

The Khiladi is also said to have left instructions with his bank to divert a certain amount of money towards the cause, thus directly helping at least 30 farmers in different areas.

When contacted, Akshay merely said, “It is a matter of concern, and I just hope more and more people get involved with this cause.”

  37. “I deliberately avoid talking about it since I am not comfortable sharing details of the work I do. But it has become tough to shield such matters. I have been doing it (helping farmers) for the last eight years. I read in the newspapers that farmers were committing suicide because they couldn’t pay Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000. I wanted to help them. So, I approached an institution and we drew up a list of 50 farmers who were on the verge of ending their lives due to huge outstanding debts. I settled their loans. Four or five years ago again in Vidharbha, a similar situation arose and I reached out to nearly 100 families.”

Sr Bachchan remarked that Bollywood has always been responsive to issues that need attention. “The film industry is often criticised for staying away from such things (important causes). But that is not true. We are the only industry which comes forward whenever there is a tragedy or calamity. We are not villains. There is a heart in this industry too,” the veteran actor said.

In August, Aamir Khan came forward to help drought-affected farmers of Maharashtra when he donated R11 lakh to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ rural water conservation programme, Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan. (Read full story)

  38. The actor had met the CM earlier in March and shown interest in contributing to the scheme. Sources say Aamir will take part in creating public awareness for the water conservation mission, which extends to 6,202 villages across six districts. Inspired by the PK star, his eight-year-old fan reportedly donated her piggy bank savings to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for drought-affected farmers. – See more at: http://www.mid-day.com/articles/akshay-kumars-super-formula-for-distressed-farmers/16601181#sthash.TGEksL7j.dpuf

  40. Could this woman be any less charismatic. Why didn’t Aditya take Deepika or Parineeti.

    • I understand that Aditya wanted to take an actress with free dates and no movies in hand. Anushka is out of the window but instead of Vaani, Parineeti who is also waiting to sign her comeback movie would have been more apt. Parineeti is head and shoulders above in talent wrt Vaani and even more traditional looking female lead.

  41. Vani looks way hotter than parineeti, and looked equally talented in Shuddh Desi Romance. I would vote for vani anyday. She would look more fresh too.

    • The imaginary permission and advice Aditya was taking from late father the other day to make the movie and now these introductions just to attempt to keep the hype in overdrive.. all these end up looking dumb and like a farce in the end.

I found these attempts very lame indeed.

I don’t know for others but that’s what I felt after watching a few seconds of these videos and reading that pathetic letter from Aditya. Was asking myself, “what the heck??”

  42. Just watched this song video of Jazba which is melodious and Irrfan delivers his dialogues with aplomb especially this when he utters” Mohabbat hai isiliye to jane diya zid hoti to baahon me hoti” . He is mesmerizing while mouthing these lines, take a bow Irrfan!!

    As for befikre—-

I’m DISAPPOINTED with this ‘lead actress’
Though both Vanee & Parineeti are good actresses (&are quite adept in snogging as evident in that sushant film!)

But both are so NOT heroine material

They LACK the oomph & charisma

If I pickup ANY GIRL FROM THE STREET, and GROOM her, she will have more stardom than these two
As for parineeti, if every girl can become a star from crash course in dieting, it will be so easy l

    STARDOM is INBORN
it’s an ART ( in deepikas own words in HNY)
Reminds me it liked the way deepika moved her mouth & lips while saying “It’s an art”…

  46. All To Do For Prem Ratan Dhan Payo And Dilwale
    Thursday 15 October 2015 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The cumulative business in 2015 has reached 1875 crore compared to the 2050 crore at the same time last year meaning it will be down to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Dilwale to do the needful to surpass the cumulative 2750 crore of last year.

There are other major films still to come like Shaandaar, Tamasha, Bajirao Mastaani and a few others which will be expected to contribute 350-400 crore between them but are not the reliable sort of films and can fall short of their big expectations. This would mean its all down to the big two Prem Ratan Dhan Paya and Dilwale which really need a 600 crore plus combine total for the year to be certain of some growth.

Although its very unlikely but if all the remaining releases perform to their potential the cumulative business could go close to 3000 crore. This basically means that at best growth can be 5-7% maximum which means an average year at best. The footfalls are running 17% down from last year and they have no chance to match last year unless Prem Ratan Dhan Payo does a repeat and is a miracle blockbuster like Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

The year has also seen just four 100 crore nett grossers so far which pretty much tells the story. Even worse statistic is that only 8 films have crossed 75 crore nett so far, in 2012 the same number (eight) had crossed 100 crore nett. it remains to be seen if 2015 can better that eight number, six will be there but can two or even three more also get there

  47. The Music Album Of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo Is Not As Good As Kick And Probably Not Even At The Level Of Bajrangi Bhaijaan So Can This Affect The Opening Day Number?
    Wednesday 14 October 2015 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

    Q. Iam a big Salman Khan fan and the music album of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is not as good as Kick and probably not even at the level of Bajrangi Bhaijaan so can this affect the opening day number?
Ans. The music of Rajshri films most of the time is better in the film rather than the albums and takes time to grow. Kick had blockbuster music with the songs being hit on release. The music is of less importance here as the release is on a big national holiday and has a star like Salman Khan so even if music is not a rage by the time of release it will not make much difference as the footfalls are huge the day after Diwali. So the initial big initial will come and then about content to sustain it. Music has more importance for films which release outside the big holidays and don’t have big box office stars as it can take the opening to a higher level.

    Q. Will Singh Is Bling be the biggest Akshay Kumar starrer worldwide as its Overseas number are better than the other Akshay Kumar films.?
Ans. No Gabbar Is Back at 135 crore will remain the biggest Worldwide grosser for Akshay Kumar in 2015. Singh Is Bling will do 130 crore on a best case scenario.
    H. Dahiya

    Q. Which movie has the record of highest footfalls in a single theatre?
Ans. Sholay in Minerva probably. The film ran for two years at the theatre and a further three years on matinee shows. The major difference between this and any jubilee or even double jubilee film is that 95% of the shows conducted over the five years were house full. It was still running close to house full but was taken off and replaced by the same makers next film Shaan. It could have gone on for many years but other theatres in Mumbai benefited from this as they got chance to screen it in repeat runs.
    Raj Pattanaik

    Q. It was Baghban in 2003 and not Bandhan that was the last film to take advantage of the October Gandhi Jayanti holiday.
Ans. Baghban released on 3rd October so it came after the holiday and had no benefit as its a one day holiday.

But will Amitabh-Hriti both will be crime in partner ? … or Amitabh will play something like Jackie ?? later will be terrible and I don’t want him to do ..

    • wake me up if Hrithik is in another Dhoom.. he was also supposed to be doing D3 remember?!

    • Due respects to AB, but AB playing a lone villain in D4 does not guarantee any kind of opening. The aim of every Dhoom movie is to outgross the earlier one hence only a Khan as a villain can give that guarantee.
A movie with AB Jr and Uday chopra as police and AB Sr as villain will not take an opening at all….

  52. Since a few weeks, there have been reports of Aditya Chopra willing to produce a thriller in the Dhoom mould starring Hrithik. I think this is the project being referred to in the above posts. I don’t think it’s Dhoom 4.

@Apex- I think Amitabh is doing well at his age. Pikku did well and is the kind of hit that few top actors have obtained this year. As for Abhishek, he is an easy target and while he is wholly responsible for being in the state he is in, it is not really commendable to kick the man at every opportunity while he is down.
