    Jazbaa Struggles On Weekdays
    Friday 16 October 2015 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jazbaa grossed 21 crore nett in its first week. The film had managed to show good growth on Saturday but could not consolidate on Sunday and although the Monday drop of a normal level the weekdays continued to fall. The film had to have strong weekdays which may have enabled it to take advantage of limited competition this week.

This did not happen so it will be a tough ask to get numbers in week two. The film has done better in Mumbai with around 8 crore nett which is 38% of the all India business (Bajrangi Bhaijaan the biggest hit of the year was 28%). This is the case for all the director’s films be it the Shootout at Lokhandwala or Shootout At Wadala or older films like Kaante or Musafir.

The business in Delhi /UP was around 4.50 crore nett while East Punjab was very dull with 1.90 crore nett and the likes of Rajasthan and CI did not perform also .

Talvar Has Strong Hold In Week Two
    Friday 16 October 2015 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Talvar did very well in its second week with business of 10.25 crore nett taking its two week total to 25.75 crore nett.

    Talvar Two Weeks
    Week One – 15,50,00,000
    Week Two – 10,25,00,000 apprx
    Drop – 33.88%

The second week collections are better than bigger films like Badlapur, NH 10 and Brothers and the drop in week two is lower than all films released this year barring Dum Laga Ke Haisha

The third week will show strong hold but probably not as strong the second week as eventually its a metro film and there is a limited audience. It should comfortably cross 30 crore nett for a finish of around 31-32 crore nett.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 Has Fair Start
    Friday 16 October 2015 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 had a fair start with collections being in the 20-25% range. The film actually had a good start in some theatres in and around Delhi with 40-45% occupancy in the morning. The opening figures in East and CP Berar were low but that is sort of expected with a film which is mainly for the Delhi NCR multiplexes.

The opening will ensure the film has a platform to bulid on over the weekend though being a youth film it will not hold much appeal for the families so if it manages to show good growth on Saturday then its unlikely to repeat on Sunday. The occupancy in the morning shows are better than films like Bombay Velvet, Piku and Katti Batti.

The other releases like Chinar Daastaa E Ishq, Ho gaya Dimaagh Ka Dahi and Wedding Pullav with the last named being best of the three with 3-5% occupancy in morning shows.

  4. After her death, Amitabh Bachchan is on record in the interview to Lehren: ‘She had a sixth sense… she had a premonition. I was shooting for Coolie in Bangalore. I was staying at the West End Hotel. My association with Smita was limited to the sets. Other than that I never made contact with her. We never met socially.’

‘But one night, at about one, I got a call in my room. The operator said Smita Patil wants to talk to you. I first thought it was a prank. But then I took the call and it was Smita.’

‘She said, “Amit-ji, I am sorry to disturb you, but are you okay?” I said, yes, I am fine. She said, “no I just got up and I had a very bad dream. I just wanted to call you and find out if you were okay.” She was on location somewhere. And that was it.’

‘Next morning I had my accident. It was just unbelievable. Throughout the two or three months I was in the ICU, she was a regular visitor. When I came home, she would come every evening and enquire about me. I can never forget that.’

    ‘She was a unique lady.’

she was excellent actress, not because she worked with amitabh in namak halal and shakti but she was just brilliant in waaris and her excellent performance in Bhumika (1977),Director Shyam Benegal scaled this film on a creatively ambitiously level. The talent involved was uniformly megawatt.

Girish Karnad and Satyadev Dubey wrote the screenplay and dialogue on which Vijay Tendulkar also collaborated.

Govind Nihalani was the cinematographer while Naseeruddin Shah, Amol Palekar, Amrish Puri and Anant Nag played the pivots around whom the life of the heroine (played by Smita) revolved. What saddens me is the way she died, just awful.

She was probably the first actress who gave the directors enough
courage to make films with female lead characters in mind, something refreshingly different from the conventional male-dominated cinema that existed in Bollywood.

  7. Remembering Ravindra Jain, and the India he made music for.

When I heard about Ravindra Jain’s demise, I thought of Naseeruddin Shah. Not the most obvious association, I know, but think of Jain’s title song for Sunayana, the 1979 Rajshri Productions’ romance, and recall Shah trying to do the romantic-hero thing, flailing his arms about in a candy-coloured set, the centrepiece of which was a fountain springing forth from a giant lotus. According to the lyrics, the Shah character is saying, O beautiful-eyed one, I want to see you enjoy the sights of the world, but his face says, Someone shoot me, please. In his entertaining memoir, And Then One Day, Shah says, “All I thought I had to do was lip-sync perfectly… What in fact I should have done is study the songs in Shammi Kapoor’s movies… It took me years before I learnt the difference between merely singing a song and ‘performing’ it.” It’s easy to understand Shah’s befuddlement at the time. He came from a different world, the world of Nishant, Manthan, Bhumika and Junoon. The rest of India, while not queuing up for the Bachchan movies, was watching Chitchor and Sawan Ko Aane Do.

Ravindra Jain’s demise also brought to mind a song from Sawan Ko Aane Do, the one that goes Kajre ki baati. This isn’t Jain’s music, as I discovered after a bit of Googling – the composer is Rajkamal. I suppose the confusion came about because audio cassettes, in the India of those days, carried songs from two films of the same era, and it’s possible that I’d first listened to Kajre ki baati on a Chitchor/ Sawan Ko Aane Do combo. (Chitchor had Ravindra Jain’s music.) But my point isn’t about the music. It’s about the lyrics. This is one of those songs where the heroine is bawling her eyes out, and she compares her kohl to a wick and her tears to oil. (We are left to complete the metaphor in our heads: the eye is the lamp.) It’s an exquisitely beautiful image, a very Indian image. It’s also an image that’s no longer marketable. At the pharmacy, I see ads for Lakmé Eyeconic Kajal and L’Oréal Kajal Magique. We live in an India of Madison Avenue makeovers, endorsed by a size-zero Kareena Kapoor. The kajal in the Sawan Ko Aane Do song is different. It’s kajra, the black cake in the little round container you may have seen in your mother’s cabinet as she dipped a finger in and lined her eye and wiped off the excess in her hair. That was what this music was, the music of Rajshri Productions, the music of Rajkamal, the music of Ravindra Jain.

This lack of… individuality may be why Ravindra Jain did not rise to the heights expected of him after his scores for Saudagar and Chitchor. Compare the way he used Yesudas to the way Salil Chaudhury used the singer in Chhoti Si Baat, the Basu Chatterjee-Amol Palekar collaboration that came before Chitchor. Jaaneman, jaaneman, tere do nayan… There’s pizzazz. You want to dance. With Jab deep jale aana (Chitchor), you want to sit in a corner, close your eyes and lose yourself. This isn’t about which is the better song, which is the better way of making music. It’s about versatility, range. It’s about why Ravindra Jain is remembered fondly, with a lot of nostalgia, but without the “genius” word being thrown around too much. Salil Chaudhury, in Chhoti Si Baat, also gave us Lata Mangeshkar’s wistful Na jaane kyon, a number that makes you want to sit in a corner, close your eyes and lose yourself. Plus, there was the ebullient Yeh din kya aaye, by Mukesh. In contrast, the songs of Chitchor, though lovely (and still dewdrop-fresh), share the same DNA. Jain was happy in his little corner. Or maybe the word is modest. He had his hits with bigger singers, but he seemed content in his little world with Hemlata and Yesudas.

Listening to his songs, we slip back into that world, the India of Chitchor, where the hero would, without smirking, liken his love to kohl and ask the heroine to line her eyes with it. Meri preet ka kaajal tum apne nainon mein male aana… Kohl keeps coming up in these songs (many of them written by Jain himself), for one of the things the heroine liked to do was sit down and make herself pretty for her beloved… Sajna hai mujhe sajana ke liye, as the song went in Saudagar. The entire sequence is about Padma Khanna getting ready to meet Amitabh Bachchan. There was a whole genre of song woven around words denoting ornaments and makeup. Gajra. Kajra. Jhumka. Payal. Kangana. The latter, today, is one of our top actresses, and she wouldn’t be caught dead playing coy in one of these numbers – or endorsing the sentiments in them. In the gorgeous title song of Ankhiyon Ke Jharokon Se (one of my favourite Ravindra Jain compositions), the girl sings, Tum ho jahan saajan meri duniya hai wahin pe. Her world is where the man is. Women like these don’t exist today – at least on screen, where they go to work and come back home to live-in partners. The cosmetics, too, have changed, and unless your name is Gulzar, you’re going to struggle to work “Hydrating Super Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++” into a tune.

  9. Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 Does Well On Day One

    Box Office India Trade Network

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 did well on day one as it grossed around 5.50-5.75 crore nett. Pyaar Ka Punchnama had failed to collect even 1 crore nett on day one. The film does have some brand value as with no face value it has manage to surpass many opening day collections of bigger films like Bombay Velvet, Piku, Katti Batti and Jazbaa.

The film has done well in the North with Delhi / UP grossing 1.50 crore nett and East Punjab 80 Lakhs nett. The Delhi / UP collections are mainly from the Delhi side with UP cities outside Noida / Ghaziabad giving limited collections. The collections in Mumbai are bit less but that is expected as its a Delhi based film with no face value.

The film will need normal weekend trending to cross 20 crore nett in three days. A normal 20-30% increase on Saturday will see it cross the business of the first film but costs are also more than double of the first film.

Wedding Pullav was the best of the other releases but it will fail to hit the 10 lakhs nett mark

    Box Office India Trade Network

Singh Is Bling grossed 10 crore nett in its second week taking its ten day business to 69.50 crore nett. The drop in the second week is a huge a huge 83% with the only saving grace being that the fall is not as big as Brothers which fell a humongous 91% in week two.

The film will become the highest grossing film ever for Akshay Kumar in East Punjab as its business stands at 11.58 crore nett in two weeks. The best is 11.79 crore nett of Holiday which Singh Is Bling will surpass in the third weekend. This is still an under performance as the circuit as grown by leaps and in the last two years and Singh Is Kinng had grossed a huge 9.61 crore nett in 2008 which would be 20 crore nett plus today.

The business in Mumbai circuit will stay below Singh Is Kinng by around 20%. Singh Is Bling will finish its business around the 72-73 crore nett mark and a distributor share of 36 crore which is a poor return for a 90 crore film.

45 Cr recovery will be via theatres and 40 Cr via non theatricals.
So the film is already semi Hit.

Most of Akshay’s films are sold between Rs 30 to Rs 50 crores, unlike the much more expensive films of the Khans. So the fact that his films do not cross the hundred-crore mark is not really important. And even average performers like Singh Is Bliing will ultimately break even, as they have a running star, which explains why we call them average.”

Movies that are adapted for Bollywood undergo a lot of adaptation to suit the sensibilities of indian audience.

I havent seen the Korean origianl, but Jazabaa was quite an engaging film and should earn as much as or more than such heroine-oriented thrillers as Mardaani or NH 10.

    Friday – 5,75,00,000
    Saturday – 7,00,00,000

  17. Small Films Dominate Since Blockbuster Success Of Bajrangi Bhaijaan
    Tuesday 19 October 2015 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bajrangi Bhaijaan proved to be a huge blockbuster in July but since then its been the small films that have proved to be the real winners. Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, Talvar and now Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 have all done extremely well while the bigger films since Bajrangi Bhaijaan have not really hit the mark.

Only Welcome Back managed to score at the box office but it still needs that 35 crore satellite income to cover its big budget. The film will do well on television no doubt but its still a fair amount to cover. Another major release Drishyam managed to sustain especially in Mumbai circuit but the damage had been done with a very dull initial.

The list of major releases performing poorly in the last three months is huge with Brothers being the biggest casualty. The others being Bangistan, All Is Well, Phantom, Hero, Katti Batti, Calender Girls, Singh Is Bling and Jazbaa.

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon took an enviable initial and basically was a plus in the first wekend itself. Talvar started slowly but had an excellent hold in week two falling just 33% and is now on course to beat the 29.75 crore nett of Peepli Live which is the highest a small art house film has ever grossed. Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 started pretty well and the way it has held on Monday it has potential to do 45-50 crore nett if it can get some support as far as screens and timings go when Shaandaar releases.

Its probably the first time in the last few years that so many small film have managed to do well in the September / October period normally its in the Feb- May period when the big films stay away. Generally the smaller films have poor records in the second half of the year.

Check out the #BOIEditorial – 9 Months Done, Time To Push! http://www.boxofficeindia.co.in/9-months-done-time-to-push/

With the final quarter of the calendar year well underway, now is as good a time as any to take stock of how 2015 has fared at the box office so far, and get a sense of where it might end up.

The general sense prevailing in the trade is that compared to the pronounced downturn the film business saw in 2014, this year been far kinder with a steady stream of hits of varying proportions giving us cause to cheer. However, is that sentiment backed by cold numbers?

First, let us take a look at the recently ended Q3, and for a sense of perspective, see how it compares with the corresponding periods in the last few years. Take a look at the table below:

Q3,Year No Domestic NBOC Average NBOC / Film
    2009 30 Rs 329 Crore Rs 10.97 Crore
    2010 27 Rs 408 Crore Rs 15.11 Crore
    2011 37 Rs 659 Crore Rs 17.81 Crore
    2012 38 Rs 802 Crore Rs 21.11 Crore
    2013 48 Rs 828 Crore Rs 17.25 Crore
    2014 39 Rs 753 Crore Rs 19.31 Crore
    2015 51 Rs 885 Crore Rs 17.36 Crore

First, the good news. Not only has Q3, 2015 been the best-ever third quarter in terms of absolute collections, it is in fact the best quarter ever, by the yardstick of topline collections. However, that accomplishment is weighed down by the fact that given the sheer volume of films that released during this period, the per film takings are in fact less than what each film earned on average for the same period last year.

So a mixed bag as far as Q3 is concerned. Let us zoom out a bit to see how the year is panning out. Check out the table below:

Year Domestic NBOC (Jan To Oct) Domestic NBOC (Full Year)
    2009 Rs 621 Crore Rs 1,210 Crore
    2010 Rs 1,084 Crore Rs 1,541 Crore
    2011 Rs 1,263 Crore Rs 1,763 Crore
    2012 Rs 1,716 Crore Rs 2,401 Crore
    2013 Rs 2,017 Crore Rs 2,837 Crore
    2014 Rs 1,860 Rs 2,726 Crore
    2015 Rs 1,856

If the average collections per film in Q3, 2015 posed something of a dampener, the numbers above also present a picture that is at odds with the belief that we have moved on from the extended slump we saw in 2014. Surprisingly, and worryingly, the total collections for the year so far are lower – albeit marginally – than last year’s figures for the same period.

Quite clearly, while optimism within the trade has rallied in recent months, objective statistics indicate that we are yet some distance away from being in a position where we can feel secure about being well and truly on the path of recovery.

The remaining weeks in this – the final and traditionally the most productive quarter for the film business – could well determine whether 2015 will feature in the roster of good years at the box office. Even more importantly, they will tell us whether the light we thought we saw at the end of the tunnel this year was that of a new dawn or an incoming road roller.

Salman Khan’s ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ to break Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ opening day record?

.”..will release in three weeks, and the hype has already reached its peak. Salman created records with “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, which was released in July this year, and with “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” he will repeat the box office success. And Salman’s film is expected to break the records of Shah Rukh Khan’s “Happy New Year”.

Shah Rukh’s film “Happy New Year” a day-after Diwali and it created records. The film still holds the record of the highest opener for Bollywood film with Rs 44.97 crore. And now Salman’s “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” is set to release on the same day. “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” is one of the most awaited films of 2015 as it marks the return of the famous actor-director jodi, Salman-Sooraj Barjatya. The film’s trailer became one of the most watched videos in India this year and now “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” songs are creating the right buzz.If all goes well, then, “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” should get the highest opening day box office collection, breaking the records of “Happy New Year”.

Last year, actor Aditya Pancholi, who is a close friend of Salman, predicted that “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” would beat the records of “Happy New Year”. “It’s going to be the season of the Khans. Shah Rukh’s Happy New Year is breaking all records. And the records of Happy New Year would be broken by Aamir Khan’s PK in December. But Salman’sPrem Ratan Dhan Payo would break the records of both the earlier record-breakers,” Aditya told Subhash K Jha in 2014.
“Prem Ratan Dhan Payo”, directed by Sooraj Barjatya, will be released worldwide this Diwali. This will be Salman’s second film of the year after “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”.

The family action drama features Salman, Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Swara Bhaskar, Armaan Kohli and Anupam Kher in key roles.”

    • I think it will, only thing which may go against it is the songs of PRDP. There has not been a good family drama for long time so if this is done right, it will go long way.
