  1. I was among the first ones to come out strongly against Aamir, so I don’t know if I am qualified to post this , but let me begin with a reasonable tweet from Sanjay Gupta on the transcript –

THOSE ACCUSING AAMIR KHAN OF BEING INTOLERANT PL HAVE DA TOLERANCE TO WATCH DA WHOLE INTERVIEW.
NOWHERE DOES HE SAY HE WANTS TO LEAVE INDIA

Sanjay Gupta ‏@_SanjayGupta 16h16 hours ago
“That was a disastrous statement for Kiran to make.” Aamir Khan’s next line after saying that Kiran wants to leave. Hear the full interview.

We are definitely not living in an ideal time. Atleast one superstar has the balls to speak his mind. He should be lauded and not hounded.

Moral of the story – Do not speak your mind in public, be diplomatic & keep smiling. Else face the wrath of the twitter brigade.

    • It’s for times like these phrases like Udtaa teer…….. G ….etc is coined!!!

I don’t understand the compulsions / timing here for Aamir or was he feeling left out of the PR drive lately with Salman / SRK hogging all the limelight….. its going to be a while before he can talk about Dangal. To be fair to him if one goes through the transcript his words are fairly reasonable. He does bring in Kiran’s misgivings on being uncomfortable and consider leaving the country but at the same time goes on to condemn that thought right away…..

Being a public figure he should have been aware which lines make the headlines and what catches media attention, so a more careful approach was needed unless he is fuck bothered and ready to ‘mess around’. The damage or ‘the job’ whichever way one looks at is now been done….though I feel when the dust settles it is he who is going to benefit and will come out much stronger out of all this. Lynching & then pampering is a way of life in India and #IStandWithAamirKhan is already trending now.

All those screaming of boycotting movies etc is a whole bunch of crap. These Khans are what they are in spite of such boycotts…. that debate is market driven and no actor worth his salt has been able dislodge them from those positions they enjoy.

The only good ‘if any’ which comes out of all this is that it places the present govt on the back foot and now each action of the ruling party will be carefully scrutinized. Foul mouthed loose cannons will be deterred in order to not mess up the situation for fear of being shown the door as it happened in Bihar recently.

On an aside, considering Aamir who comes across a very sensitive and emotional person ( courtesy SMJ ) and going by the past where he is among the least interested in monetary gains, may actually call it quits and relocate as there has been so much bad blood within the industry itself now………….! I mean he has the money and means to do it plus Hollywood calling is always an option to the likes of Irfan, piggy chops……

His silence and not offering any clarifications today is deafening and I am just going to end by saying picture abhi baaki hai mere dost !!!

In someways action and reaction has now become a daily way of our lives……..

SRK interview was actually misconstrued as he never said much even after constant prodding by Barkha to get headlines. But his responses were much more street smart – ” address de do ghar se uthaakar le jaonga…”

As I was alluding in one of the previous comments, this time the backlash not just from right wingers but fence sitters as well. This is the regular strategy and the way BJP and fringe function with the help of their abusive twitter army and TV channel stooges.
They blow up things giving it a totally different colour. TV channels hold debate and the news is all over.

When the truth comes out – NO ONE HEARS OF IT!

Delhi Government and AAP goes through this regularly. Day in and day out. The latest being the Lalu AK hug which is of such national importance The bhakts and TV channels have made it a national crisis quite forgetting Modi’s various hugs with various scoundrals including Lalu.

      Damage is always done.

  3. I believe that its not him speaking, but his deeply submerged anxiety, the one that he developed upon knowing about Sallu Sultan releasing 2 months before Dangal. At least we ought to understand Aamir’s fragile psyche at this moment. Poor chap just had Sallu nearly cross PK. Now he has to deal with Sultan before Dangal. And who knows if Dilwale, Raaes and Fan might just cross the magical 300crs.
I wonder where his intolerance beef manifested from? After all the lynchings in 2015, there were a total of max 5 people who lost their lives in a country of 1.3 billion. On the other hand, just in France, from Charlie Hebdo to now, more than 150 innocents lost lives at the hands of intolerant extremists. Per Capita, France just wallops India in the Intolerance Index. The cradle of liberte, egality et al, the representative of Western Democracy is actually more dangerous to live today, than the wretched intolerant country of India. Wonder which country he will find that caters to his current affluent tastes. US/Europe, which is going through an even bigger intolerance than the supposed level in India? Or the Middle-East? Had this statement been made before Bihar elections, it still might’ve made sense. But after 13/11, and the resultant flak faced by minorities in Europe/USA, now in fact India seems to be the most tolerant place on Earth! Yet Aamir finds this very time to make this statement!

I sincerely believe that his deep submerged BoxOffice anxiety just bubbled up in that interview and caused him to make this really stupid comment. How else can an extremely careful, thoughtful, prepared person make a statement such as this.

      • Seriously Master, tell me how this is illogical in any way? Can you argue that right here today on Nov 24th 2015, India is more intolerant than the US/Europe? I will not name any other countries cause barring a few such as Japan/Korea, none of them are functioning democracies in any sense. I mean, one has to inject some sense of proportion into a debate. What/where exactly did he feel the intolerance? In Pali Hill/Bandra where the going rate is upwards of Rs 50k/sqft, where anyone will happily buy whatever Aamir wants to sell, where fans will love to schmooze with him, and shower his family with petals where-ever they go. It is the height of being ridiculous.
And this AFTER the events roiling the civilized world over the last week!! So, the land of free speech, ie France has been getting attacked non-stop since January, where Intolerant terrorists have killed cartoonists for exercising the right of free speech , and for exercising the freedom to sit at a cafe, or watch a soccer game, or dance at a concert. Clearly, no one seems to be siding the poor French, cause these closet psuedo-seculars have always vilified the French for being enablers of policies that caused the terrorism. I have yet to come across all those mainstream AwardWaapsi folks criticize the Intolerant terrorists. Perhaps it does not suit their narrative. In this age of relative tolerance levels between Nations, I just would like to know which country Kiran Rao finds Tolerant today.

        • Nykavi there’s a slippage here. Now at the outset I should say that one should always be precise in terms of what one says otherwise one can either be misunderstood or more importantly one can be co-opted. The problem with this larger debate is that many people besides making it about something vague like ‘intolerance’ have also in many cases just talked in these generalities. The media especially has reframed the whole debate as such. but this then doesn’t pin anyone down. And it allows those defending the present government to make it about a larger historical argument on intolerance in India. As far as I’m concerned the two debates are very different. But of course even those attacking the current government have in very few cases had the courage to say what they really want to. For understandable reasons, I’m not criticizing them, but it’s muddied the waters. Much as on the other side those who defend such statements do so perversely in the name of a Nehruvian India! Which then further allows other defenders to agree. You have folks from the RSS more or less using this kind of language as well. It’s all a remarkable exercise in political double speak! My point here isn’t to necessarily take sides (in fact in several of my recent comments I’ve been more interested in pointing out the structural problems of these debates or how things have been framed). What’s my problem with a statement such as yours which I think is problematic in the same way? If Donald Trump makes offensive statements, even disgusting ones, about everyone from Hispanics to Muslims and if he’s then quizzed about it and if he in turn responds that no one ought to criticize him or call him intolerant because the US is such a diverse and vibrant and multicultural democracy there would be something absurd about this response. Why? Because he’s been trying to take apart precisely that pluralism with every other statement of his. But this is why happens when defenders of the govt (official spokesmen or journalists or whoever) debate these things. The logic is simple:

          1) these are isolated incidents
          2) let’s talk about 1984
          3) even if there are problems India will withstand this

These are first of all contradictory explanations but I am most interested in the last one as I’ve been explaining.

Now in terms of how the West has responded and so forth it’s important not to mix up these debates. Because there are lots of distinctions. But it’s also important not to feed into the (I know you don’t intend to do this) communal framing of these issues where a Muslim should either be happy in India or else consider migrating to the Mideast or else put up with French police actions or whatever. What’s the problem here? The alternative is always a somewhat nasty one. Whether this is actually so or not is irrelevant here. Because that is the contrast that’s usually offered. But by that very same token why do those on the Right forever complain about India? And as a historic matter. Everything’s bad about it, everything’s also been Nehru’s fault and so on. Just in the last 18 months one has heard this constantly on TV but this has been a much older complaint in these cross-sections! So all these complaints, all this paranoia (about the minorities actually being in control in India), etc is all fine, then no other examples from other parts of the world are necessary, then no one is anti-national for bashing India at every point (including now a PM who does this on foreign visits when he constantly sniggers about the Congress past.. surely unusual by any standards! perhaps even anti-national?!), etc etc. But when the minority does it it’s suddenly illegitimate.

Once more I am criticizing the framing here much more than the present. If I were doing that my language wouldn’t be as kind as many people here know. But again whether it’s Erdogan in Turkey, Modi in India or whoever anywhere I tend not to be very confused about what’s really going on!

You are talking about Aamir’s boxoffice insecurity and the reason for the points he’s raising which I found silly at every level. Also, folks here should take it easy and not bring every other country when the topic is about Indian politics. As Satyam always puts it well.. showing some other crime(here France/terrorist) doesn’t make the issues in India to be acceptable. Just stop bring irrelevant examples. If Aamir Khan who did SMJ in India during Congress regime, can’t even give his opinion then why do you think you or anyone else deserve do give their opinion at all? Why should 200 Awardwapsi folks needs to comment on France terrorists to gain opinion in your eyes when it is completely irrelevant to their point they are making.

As for bringing other countries into the debate it is He that did so first. He talked about moving out of an intolerant India to some other place. So I ask with utmost vinamrata, “Guruji, which Tolerant nation would you like to move to? Does that Utopia exist somewhere on Planet Earth?”
Actually, I know where it does exist. It does so in the confines of his 50cr Bandra Bungalow, where fawning fans waited with bated breath for his glimpse. Or at his 1cr/10second ads. Or at his 100cr/movie earnings. just forgot all that in a momentary lapse of reasoning. Kiran Rao is scared of opening newspapers, bcoz she suddenly thought that she lived in Dharawi instead of Pali Hill. Galti nahi hai inki, all they read/hear are echo-chamber views that portray public lynchings taking place at every street corner from her house to his studio shoot. 7. The thing is Aamir should give specific example. Where exactly in Pali Hill, Bandra, Juhu and all the posh areas of Mumbai he goes to, he was having intolerant people behaving badly due to his being ‘minority’. Kiran should point places where Azad was mistreated for being muslim and how exactly she is feeling unsafe in last few months. They should not try to talk about experiences that are non-personal. Being celebs you have to be careful to not induce lack of peace in the country by useless, insensible comments of things you have not yourself experienced.

One thing that people don’t want to notice or give importance to is what he said , that (also in the clip) insecurity comes from when the people elected to speak for the people don’t respond and keep quiet. That’s the problem he is talking of and I concur.

      • Overall not an unfair piece but I still disagree with a couple of things. One is a larger point which all good liberals make from Obama to Aamir! Strategically I understand why they make it but I don’t otherwise agree with it. This is the idea that if one commits certain kinds of crimes one cannot be a Muslim at all. Unfortunately things are not so simple. People commit all kinds of crimes in the name of religion. Here of course one must separate the political employment of a religion from a theological debate. Both can lead to the same kinds of violence but they are still different things. Equally there can be something of both in a group. But whichever category a group or person who commits such acts falls in this is different from saying they’re not Muslims at all. Whether one is sincere about a belief or not is another matter. But as long as people call themselves by certain names we have to accept it. Specially when some of these religious ideologies attract recruits of all kinds. By denying all this or by saying that any use of religion in these barbaric contexts immediately cancels out any such claim one loses the opportunity to understand more fully what’s going on. And if you can’t understand something you can’t really tackle it. Whether it’s a political ideology, a religious one or both. And again there is no religion, none, which doesn’t have blood on its hands. But every follower of such a faith pretends there’s some pure version of the faith where such things are not allowed and hence those who continue to do those things automatically become something other. The problem with this is that the logic can be extended in all directions. Do rapist Muslims or Christian mass murderers remain Muslims and Christians respectively? Do militant Buddhists who chase minorities out of a country remain Buddhists? I could multiply these examples. This logic cannot begin only with certain acts. And so if an ISIS guy calls himself a Muslim I am less interested in whether he’s sincere or not or whether he remains a Muslim or not after committing those acts. I want to understand how that ideological virus gets going and how it achieves certain goals. In any case people can be very sincere about some very awful beliefs. A monstrous belief isn’t ok just because someone sincerely believes in it. I understand why people say the opposite as a strategic matter but this never satisfies bigots. So one might as well not try.

2)Secondly I still don’t see why this test of where Aamir might be able to live more comfortably than in India is one he has to pass. There’s no reason why he has to clear this hurdle. We don’t ask everyone else who’s unhappy with their country to suggest alternatives where they might be better or where they might be better treated or what have you. Even if one is so upset with one’s country that one wishes to leave there’s nothing odd about this. Any number of people have felt this, said this, done this in so many countries at different historical points. Now I’ve already said that Aamir probably shouldn’t have made that one comment (even if the longer remarks make clear that there was a larger context to what he was saying and this includes the entire interview where he was asked about Islamist terrorism and so on as well) but I’m making this objection again as a strategic matter, not otherwise. because people have found it easy to just pounce on this.

        • I should add one more point to this because it’s a discussion that crops up in a lot of places. It’s first of all an insult to the vast majority of Hindu audiences who don’t think this way to suggest that when they watch films with Aamir or SRK or Salman or whoever, that they’re somehow doing these ‘minority’ actors a ‘favor’ and that somehow if they stopped doing this careers would be destroyed. This is the worst kind of communalism. And these actors of all people aren’t stupid enough not to know who the majority of their audience is! But of course here there’s that other slippage. When people attack a party or an ideology and even if they resort to abstractions like ‘intolerance’ the idea that they’re attacking all Hindus or even implicating all Hindus is ridiculous. Through this entire discourse there runs this toxic thread (go to Pakistan if you’re not happy, people will stop seeing your films and then you’ll know.. etc etc). The audience or the vast majority of folks don’t think along such communal lines. Even where there are such fault lines people don’t bring them to the movies! You cannot celebrate the richness or the uniqueness of India by suggesting that this very pluralism that enables what is not possible in many other countries is some kind of favor or gift. It isn’t.

        • Totally agree with your first point. The second point is a matter of practicality, ie, if one talks about leaving a country, one also ought to enlighten us about the alternative choices where a better situation exists. Given contemporary global realities, there simply aren’t any! And to your 3rd point below, only the worst communal people would suggest doing a ‘favor’.

However, I would not be charitable if even BigB were to make such a statement. So firmly ensconced are these people in their rarefied security-cover provided elite existences, that it would be ridiculous to suggest this as an excuse to leave the country. BigB very genuinely expressed fears to his life during the 26/11 episode. He stated that it was the first time he ever reached out for a gun. That was genuine. But to say that reading newspapers is scary, is to suggest that there are rioters and lynchers baying for blood outside their doorsteps, which is just an outlandish suggestion. These are people living blessed lives that 99.99% of Indians would die to experience. Yet they somehow want to project that they are no different or as common as the rest of those 99%. It is ridiculous.

  10. “One wonders how real his so-called threat perception is in his privileged, rarified Bollywood existence. But when he talks about feeling insecure, when he talks about his wife fearing for their child, that fear spreads like a contagion and affects India’s teeming hinterland where most Hindus and Muslims live peacefully as brothers. It provokes fear and suspicion where probably none exists.
When it finally came, his indictment of intolerance has been sensational all right. But it has also been thoughtless and irresponsible. It will hurt many, and will anger many more. India is a country with a staggering number of social evils. Aamir Khan threw the spotlight on many of them admirably in his activist TV show Satyamev Jayate. He even shed copious tears on air as he talked about them.
If you’re an Indian who cares about India, you don’t take the next flight out to some “safe”, perfectly peaceful and socially-integrated country. (Is there such a place anywhere in the world?) You stay here and try to fight the problems. You stay here and try to make things better. Aamir, the consummate actor and storyteller, knew that plot. When did he lose it so dreadfully?”

  15. I recently spent considerable time trying to explain a Baniya builder from Mumbai about the merits of paying taxes. The constant refrain was that why should he pay taxes if they do not give any direct benefit/return to the pocketbook? The past 9 months have seen a barrage of ED notices being sent to Builders, Doctors, Stock Brokers, Dukandaars, Actors, etc. ie anyone with any ability to generate cash incomes. The official registration limit for Mumbai apartments has been raised so high that it does not make sense for anyone with cash (aka Black Money) to hide it into property. This has caused tremendous hardship to the Builders, who keep asking the Govt to relax the rules. But actually, these rules have only one purpose: to stop black money from finding a home. And forcefully making people pay taxes. However, our spoilt rich Indian brethren (ie those who do not live outside India and pay taxes like the rest of us poor Non Resident folks) have started questioning why they ought to be paying taxes. The property business has slumped since Modi came to power. When every fourth member of every business family is a broker, this slump has affected business and confidence. But this was not supposed to be how “Ache Din” would happen. Modi was going to put 15 lakhs into everyone’s pockets which would enable everyone to pay ultra-low reg fees for Mumbai apts and conveniently park all their black money into properties. Add to this the curbs on paid media, the govt aversion to actually Pay them for News. Unka dhandha bhi chaupat. Doctors being asked to clean up their acts. Businessman being denied access to Govt middlemen who cud be bribed and files pushed.
And thus starts the Intolerance Din. Koi nahi, its all part of the game. 60days of pre-Bihar media management has given a massive victory to Nitish. Actually, it is the beauty of Indian Democracy that within 18 months it elected three hugely significant figures: Modi, Kejriwal and Nitish. One is Honest and Communal. Second is Honest and Narcissitic. Third is Honest and Arrogant. But now the media which demanded Modi to show results in 18 months, has to also ask the same of Kejri and Nitish in another 18 months. That is, a full 24 months before the next Lok Sabha elections. But who will be the new media darling to compete against Mr Modi? So it will be interesting to see if Lalu and Sons will let Nitish maintain his honesty or even his ego. Perhaps a wisened Lalu will let Nitish do good. Or perhaps Kejri can work some wonders and outshadow Nitish in doing good. Even Akhilesh has ramped up efforts to do good ahead of UP elections. Now that a CM has become PM, every other CM will ask, “Abey main kyun nahi?” But to burnish one’s good governance credentials, one has to actually do it. Jo bhi ho, it is going to be a bonanza of good governance from the Centre to the States. Folks now is the time to invest in India.

As for being liberal minded, no one can accuse me of not being socially liberal. But I will not join the ridiculous din of selective manufactured outrage, that only highlights one set of intolerance, while totally blacking out another set. Enlightenment actually exists in having the ability to call out hypocricy and in not toeing the kool-aid inspired line. Its totally condemnable and an invasion of privacy to assemble outside their houses and create dins. That is not even a point to argue about.

It’s okay for the prime minister to be celebrated by a stadium full of British citizens who believe India is too filthy and corrupt to live in. It isn’t okay for an Indian to say that his family feels vulnerable as a religious minority.

Ha! in B.W I only know of Sonum (old indian actress) husband (gulshan rai) who left India because of underworld threats or Nadeem who also left because of underworld troubles. All Aamir, SRK, Salman have been threatened by underworld and that is what they need to fear more than anything!

Except for the 3million odd Indians who are employed by Private Industry, and who have tax deducted at source, the large majority do not want to pay tax. I would be very curious to know the tax compliance situation of all these esteemed bwood bighsots. Sure they can leave, but will they have the stomach to migrate to a Western World where Tax Dodging is a severe crime? Is the current Intolerance of the Modi Sarkar towards Tax Dodgers making all of them think twice about living in India?

  18. Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman on Tuesday said he identified with Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s statement on growing intolerance and that his (Khan’s) wife felt like leaving the country when he said he (Rahman) too faced a similar situation a couple of months ago.

Rahman was referring to Mumbai-based Raza Academy’s fatwa against him after he composed the music for Iranian film ‘Muhammad: Messenger of God’, which alleged that the title was humiliating to the Prophet. At that time, chief ministers of Delhi and UP had cancelled Rahman’s concerts at the last minute. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad was quick to invite the Oscar award singer to “re-convert to Hinduism”, saying it was time for his “ghar wapsi”.

There was no need of Award Wapsi in protrst aginst Raza Academy, because Rahman himself gave a beautiful reply to them and there were no politicians or other arganizations supporting or making statements in support of the Academy’s ‘ fatwa’. Unlike in the case of Ghulam Ali concert cancellation, the Dadri lynching, the beef paryy in J& K, the blackening of Sudheer Kulkarni’s face etc. There was no posts in the social media supporting Raza Academy’s fatwa. Sio why bother and mkae it feel important? In case of Klaburgi, Dabholkar, they were actually murdered and the Sahity Academy did not even issue a condemnation. That is why the awrd wapsi. In case of rahman wht offended him is not the Raza Academy’s fatwa which he could handle, but the VHP’s talk of Ghar wapsi which is an affront to his deep and abiding faith.

    • If he could handle the Raza, why was his concert cancelled? Was that not intolerance? His bread-butter earning from a concert was taken away from him. But no regrets by anyone, its just par for the course. He was so threatened by the fatwa that he feared for his life and cancelled the concert. And you say that he could “Handle” it!! We dont even know if it was his own decision or the Delhi govt decision, either of which are problematic in their own ways.
However some stupid comments by fringe VHP, that had no economic or physical threat to his being were being used to highlight intolerance!!

  24. Under attack over his remarks on intolerance, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan today asserted that he stood by his comments and made it clear that neither he nor his wife Kiran Rao have any intention of leaving the country.

50-year-old Aamir, who drew flak from BJP and a section of film fraternity for expressing his “alarm and despondency” over the rise in recent incidents of intolerance, came out with a statement, saying he is “proud to be an Indian”.

“First let me state categorically that neither I, nor my wife Kiran, have any intention of leaving the country. We never did, and nor would we like to in the future.

“Anyone implying the opposite has either not seen my interview or is deliberately trying to distort what I have said. India is my country, I love it, I feel fortunate for being born here, and this is where I am staying,” he said.

The actor had kicked up a political storm with his remarks at a function in Delhi on Monday about his wife expressing fear for their child in the current atmosphere.

He had said, “Kiran and I have lived all our life in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India… She fears for her child, she fears about what the atmosphere around us will be.”

In his statement today, a defiant Aamir showed no signs of relenting in the face of fierce criticism.

“I stand by everything that I have said in my interview. To all those people who are calling me anti-national, I would like to say that I am proud to be Indian, and I do not need anyone’s permission nor endorsement for that,” he said.

BJP had hit out at Aamir, saying “Where will he and his family go other than India? There is no other better country like India and no better neighbour than a Hindu for an Indian Muslim. What is the situation in Muslim countries and Europe. There is intolerance everywhere.”

Shielding him from the attack, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi had said the government should instead of branding all those who question it and the Prime Minister as “unpatriotic, anti-national or motivated” reach out to people to understand what’s disturbing them.

In his statement, Aamir said, “To all the people shouting obscenities at me for speaking my heart out, it saddens me to say you are only proving my point.” He also thanked those who stood by him.

“To all the people who have stood by me, thank you. We have to protect what this beautiful and unique country of ours really stands for. We have to protect its integrity, diversity, inclusiveness, its many languages, its culture, its history, its tolerance, it’s concept of ekantavada, it’s love, sensitivity and its emotional strength,” he said.

The actor ended his statement by quoting Rabindranath Tagore’s famous poem, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, Where knowledge is free, Where the world has not been broken up into fragments, by narrow domestic walls, Where words come out from the depth of truth,

“Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection, Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way, Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit, Where the mind is led forward by thee, Into ever-widening thought and action, Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake.”

    No, it’s not just intolerance
November 25, 2015, Pritish Nandy in Extraordinary Issue | TOI1

Last Sunday one of India’s finest poets, Jayanta Mahapatra returned his Padma Shri. The reasons he gave in his letter to the President of India were somewhat similar to what other poets, film makers, intellectuals and scientists had cited when they recently returned their awards. I have known Jayanta for three decades now. I brought out his first book of poems when he was struggling to find a publisher. And this much I can vouchsafe for, he has not a single political bone in his body. He is not the protesting type either. His poems are private and introspective. He never sought recognition. It came his way late in life because he never sought it out.
While returning his award, Jayanta wrote something about the moral asymmetry growing in the country. I do not quite understand what he means by that (poets have their own language, their own personal idiom) but I certainly sympathise with him when he describes his act as a small and insignificant step of a personal nature, not to be treated as an attempt to bring dishonour to the country. He said this because, I guess, a lot of people are trying to muddy the waters by trying to describe such acts as political, with the intent of shaming the current regime. While that may well be the intent of a few, most of the people I know who are returning their awards are doing so because they know no other way to voice their anguish at the current scenario. The anguish is not against the current regime. Nor is it against Modi. The anguish is against the way our country is going. It is against the dying of a dream.
Unfortunately, the media has over simplified this as a battle against intolerance. Intolerance is but only one of the many reasons why our creative community is distressed today. And not everyone returning an award is protesting against intolerance. Many are unhappy over other issues as well. Increasing violence, stifling of creative expression, crackpot bans and the intervention of the state in our private lives, the insecurity of minorities, murder of rationalist thinkers: these are but a few of the concerns. I do not think the blame for all these can be left at Modi’s door. But it is important for him to stop the decline. A Governor who thinks Hindustan is only for Hindus should be asked to step down. A minister who thinks APJ was a good President even though he was a Muslim deserves a rap on his knuckles, not APJ’s bungalow. And then, there are the familiar motor mouths constantly out to create mayhem wherever possible. Only Modi can tell them to shut up.
For all this is vitiating the atmosphere. Thinking people are unhappy. No, it’s not political. It’s not against the current dispensation. If anything, it is the voice of a new India trying to be heard over the raucous din. The frustration comes from the fact that the illiberalism of the past has now been replaced by a new illiberalism, in some ways more ferocious. It is not what we expected from the new regime. Those who are returning their awards are sad, disappointed people. And they are sadder because their motives are being misconstrued.
I have seen some of them trying to explain themselves on news TV and failing. It’s not always easy to explain or justify one’s disappointment and journalists are eager to capture conflict. So they ask questions that force people, even thinking people, on the back foot. Most of them have no convincing answers to give when they were asked why they did not protest earlier, during the Congress years, when equally wrong things happened. Why didn’t you return your awards then? Such questions have no real answers. Protests are seldom timed to perfection. They happen.
The fact is: It’s a long time since we expected anything from our politicians. The Congress killed all our hope, particularly during its second UPA tenure. It was Modi who gave us hope with his high pitched election campaign. We suddenly began to believe in the possibility of change, real change. That is exactly why we are so disappointed today. The mandate for change was also a mandate for hope. And that hope has been belied. That’s all. Modi’s minders are reading too much politics into it.
If the same things had happened during a Congress regime, no one would have felt so anguished. They are anguished today because they expected far better from Modi. Modi had promised them that he would change India. He had not promised them crackpot bans or lynch mobs. He had promised hope and change. So, in their heads, Modi (and no, not the BJP) has a personal responsibility to put things right. When Modi chooses to keep quiet or look away (like Manmohan Singh used to do) people are even more frustrated.
The award returnees are not lemmings resorting to mass suicide. They are just 60 people, intelligent people, thinking people trying to express a view. This is no vile conspiracy. This is just a simple warning sign. And Modi’s advisers would do well to notice it and try to build the consensus Modi had promised us during his election campaign.

No one is asking for a change in government. (Not as yet.) What we want is a change in the quality of governance. Is that too much to ask for?

I say no. That is why I am hanging on to my awards.

          Liked by 1 person

        • I never liked the whole art house movement barring exceptions. Don’t like the masala of the 80s barring exceptions. And I like everything about the 70s from the grand masala efforts to all the middle cinema efforts of Hrishikesh and Basu Chatterjee and so on. I certainly don’t like those Amol Palekar efforts less than those Bachchan films that are also favorites of mine. By the way this is one of the reasons why it always annoys me when people club the 70s with other eras. There was extraordinary variety in this period. And really the only time in Bombay film history when three distinct strands can be clearly discerned. The peak of the masala movement, the hey day of the art house movement, finally the equal peak of the middle cinema impulse. No other decade has this balance. But even when people refer to contemporary cinema as somehow more ‘refined’ than the past even in that formalist sense this too is false. the 50s was already this in very important ways. In the 60s things changed but the significant talents of the 50s were already making very important films in this same formalist sense and were already nourished on everything from film noir to Italian neorealism and beyond. I’d even go further and say that there are really only two really important decades in Bombay cinema — the 50s and the 70s. Everything is either comparatively weak or (and as in the present) more or less imitation of outside influences without making the result enough of an Indian mix. So we have with the latter xeroxes of Hollywood or the festival circuit for the most part.

It does not matter to you that the critique has nothing to do with religion. Bush Jr painted the world in similar black and white only colors and dragged it into this whole middle east mess. But people do not seem to understand that the world operates in gray shades, and navigating through them is complicated. It is a travesty to just over-simplfy people as anti-minority or phobic of a particular religion, or nationality or caste.

I felt he dodged some key political questions but overall he was very hesitant in his answers but that is understood now since everyone on the right loses their freaking minds.

I very much enjoyed the full interview and this is why people who think Aamir made recent comments just to be in the news are very wrong and/or just have an underlying loathing for Aamir. He has always chosen to be outspoken and I hope he continues to be outspoken in his views and principles for what he believes in.

      • I thought he comes out bad; Two weeks ago he says there is lots of positivity (he was still hesitant of endorsing Modi when Shekhar asked) and now there is intolerance in last 6-8 months. It can not be both.

In fact within the RNG interview, if you parse the interview the perception is due to media/newspaper. But the very next question he says that he doesn’t have complete faith in media. I think his position is not well thought at least in this debate point. I agree with him when he says there should be sense of justice and security in citizens mind; also it is pointless when you talk about past misdeeds. What is wrong is wrong.

        • I will agree that those two interviews cannot be reconciled. And when I saw the walk the talk appearance initially (i.e. when it first came out) I was myself surprised as to how positive he sounded overall. On a related note and while I don’t disagree very often with Aamir I wasn’t at all happy with the take he provided on 70s cinema and so on in that interview and for that matter the current one. Because this kind of thing runs dangerously close to the classic Johar-SRK view of Bollywood as some kind of progressive evolution towards the present. I completely reject this idea. even on the Bachchan questions he was a bit coy which disappointed me because he’s usually said the opposite (about how he loves those films and wants Hindi cinema to recapture those roots and so on). If I might put it even more sharply the walk the talk interview is something the BJP could entirely agree with (including those references to the Emergency which didn’t really follow at all from the question that was asked). I’d go so far as to say that the walk the talk interview is the most unusual one I’ve ever come across from Aamir. Not quite sure how to explain it.

          http://www.ndtv.com/video/player/walk-the-talk/walk-the-talk-with-aamir-khan/390478

watch around the 34.50 min work where he responds to Shekhar Gupta’s comment about Bollywood not being rooted in the same way anymore and introduces the Emergency.

follow the response closely. He singles out Dev Anand as a good example (and all credit to dev for this) but who would you think of first as an example of what Aamir is referring to (leaving aside all the other actors)?

there might have been a couple of remarks elsewhere too. But my larger point was that he’s argued more for the 70s and the Desai kind of cinema than anyone else among his contemporaries. About how films used to be fun in those days and so on. Here he doesn’t do anything to defend that view but secondly the Emergency response also takes apart the ethics of those actors.

But even in the RNG awards exchange check out this bit:

          http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/aamir-khan-at-rng-awards-here-is-the-complete-conversation/

Anant: So, do you think films have gotten more intelligent over time?
Aamir: Intelligent is a very flunky word I feel. I feel cinema owe the 90’s and the next decades has become slightly more refined and there is a lot more variety. Audiences have changed and they want to see different kind of stuff, filmmakers have changed, they want to tell different kind of stories within the main stream and that was unusual. In 70’s you would have seen very little of it in the mainstream. So I would say that yes there has been some amount of refinement in the main stream cinema.

          Like

        • again my objection here is that precisely this is very close to the SRK-Johar view of the world. SRK would often in his interviews be dismissive of older films on similar grounds. Johar too would talk about refinement and so on. Aamir never did, quite the opposite. But it’s also flatly untrue. First off as I said earlier the 50s was a very refined decade in that same formalist sense. A different mass aesthetic developed in the 70s but this wasn’t the whole deal. The same period saw mainstream middle cinema flourish. The Hrishikesh Mukherjee films of that period are also iconic. films like Anand or Abhimaan or Chupke Chupke, who doesn’t know these films? They did a fraction of the big commercial releases but they were nonetheless successes in their own right and had enormous iconic value. Even today such kinds of films do a fraction of the larger blockbuster types. But there were tons of such films made in those days, many of which people don’t remember anymore. Bachchan’s own career from the 70s (a point I’ve always made) had extraordinary variety. Before he moved onto the one man industry phase in the 80s (when Hindi cinema in any case became more impoverished in this decade) he had done all those Mukherjee films. Even to this day Mukherjee is the director with whom he’s done among the highest number of films. Then there were others too from Saudagar to Manzil to Do Anjaane and so on. But even within the commercial format playing the Kabhi Kabhie character was an unusual choice. In the 80s there was still Bemisaal. The other point to be made here is that it is not close to adequate to call the 70s formula cinema. Yes Desai had a certain formula, some other filmmakers did too but to say that all those strong Salim-Javed scripts were ‘formula’ is absurd. Similarly Prakash Mehra often had strong narratives. Yes he too had a certain formula but always backed by strong story lines. ‘Forumula’ makes it sound like business as usual and does discredit to these filmmakers. A film like Kasme Vaade within that formula narrative again had a rather sensitive storyline. I don’t need to get into Don! All of this stuff is different from something like Dus Numbri. Also a big hit in those days but incredibly inferior as a film in just about every way imaginable in that same ‘formula’ sense. I could go on giving more examples for middle cinema and these sorts of commercial films and so on. And again even if one is deconstructing the 70s there is the 50s where you had many important makers indulging in the kinds of aesthetic choices that are still admired the world over and where the films are used as examples in film schools. The larger point I’m trying to make is that this is the traditional SRK-Johar view of the world (though SRK not surprisingly had moved away from it as he has jumped on the same bandwagon with the likes of Farah Khan or Shetty, Johar himself doesn’t argue against it anymore.. hey when Telugu inspired masala is so successful you can hardly criticize the 70s!) where one way of dealing with the burden of this history is to pretend that the past was ‘crude’ and so on and even the good films were more about the iconic than examples of fine cinema and that Hindi cinema in general somehow evolves over time and you get to the 90s and beyond and we’re getting global Bollywood! The latter is of course more about the diaspora than anything else. Otherwise Hindi films have been global long before this from the Mideast to Africa to the Caribbean, from China to Russia (Raj Kapoor had always been big in these places), certainly since Bachchan. So this a very self-interested, convenient narrative that addresses a certain anxiety in the present. And Aamir was always on the other side of it. It’s therefore been very disappointing for me to see this turn. These latest two interviews have represented the most explicit such examples of the same. But again I was especially surprised about the Walk the Talk appearance because here things are taken much further, specially with the Emergency example. Because the message seems to be ‘not only were those films formulaic, even the rooted values they were arguing for cannot be taken seriously because those folks did nothing during the Emergency’. Even this can be accepted as a critique but it wasn’t there before.

        • “follow the response closely. He singles out Dev Anand as a good example (and all credit to dev for this) but who would you think of first as an example of what Aamir is referring to (leaving aside all the other actors)?”

do you think this is a ‘shot’ at bachchan?? I am not too familiar with this issue 1)because I wasn’t born then 2) because I am not too familiar with Indian politics and its history…

i was disappointed in this answer….

“Anant: But you know cinema during the 60’s and 70’s, there was something very idealistic about being the protagonist, there was a sense of anti-establishment that cinema’s had. Do you find this anti-establishment messaging, in the contest of journalism, becoming a little old fashioned?

Aamir: I have never thought of it that way. I have never worked that way. I don’t look at films as anti-establishment, or so I don’t know how to answer.”

not sure why he just denied this outright and refused to talk about it.

on the question you pointed to, I agree with your larger point but to play devil’s advocate…he may be trying to defend his own films here when he mentions more refined and not the Dharma/YashRaj crap (at least that’s my hope lol).

        • Don’t think he was taking a shot in that sense.. but certain statements lead to certain implications.

          Like

        • also he says (paraphrasing here) in films they talk about justice and but in reality only few actors who actually follow that path. but i think this true in any field. it’s hard to do this (especially if its political) unless one is fully committed to being an advocate. there is so much pressure from whatever fraternity one belongs to that it is safer to just roll with the tide.

on the other hand, I always admire and want leaders/athletes/actors to be outspoken and demand justice where they see injustice but again its really hard to do that because of the external and internal pressures of society. and if dev anand indeed stood up against the tide for that issue which was discussed….i have newfound respect for him.

  36. Naseeruddin Shah has unshakable faith in the Indian democratic system.

Aamir Khan’s statement that he and his wife have discussed leaving India due to the growing intolerance in the country has brought a sharp response from fellow-actor Naseeruddin Shah

“For Aamir to say this, it carries weight but I am not contemplating going anywhere. Anyone trying to drive me out of my home, that is India, will have one hell of a fight on his hands,” says Naseer.

Sometime ago Naseer had been attacked for his views about an open-border policy vis-a-vis Pakistan.

Naseer had reacted by saying, “My name is Naseeruddin Shah and I believe that’s why I was targeted. It really pains me to say this. I have never been aware of my identity until now.”

However, he admits the pain he felt then has not shaken his faith in the Indian democratic system.

    ————————————————————————————

Like a lot of people in the film industry, Shatrughan Sinha is surprised by Aamir Khan’s public revelation that his wife Kiran raised the idea of leaving India due to the growing intolerance in the country.

“I am surprised. Aamir and Kiran Rao are a very nice, gentle and amiable couple. Aamir must have his reasons but I wonder why he talked about a private conversation with his wife in a public forum. Did he ask her permission?’ wonders Shatruji.

At the same time, he feels too much is being made of the issue. “It wasn’t as if Aamir said he’s leaving. It was just a thought, albeit an improper thought. He should’ve not said it. But it’s not such a huge issue that it should polarize the film industry in the way it seems to have done.”

Shatruji also slams political parties for raising a hue and cry. “They are jumping into the debate for mileage which is wrong. Such sensitive issues cannot be used for political mileage. We should try to understand why a man as intelligent, sensible and successful as Aamir Khan said he felt insecure for his child in India and not slam him for speaking his mind. And imagine, if a man who can afford the best security service says he fears for his child, what impact this would have on the defenceless common man?”

Shatruji , however, is one with those who have tweeted about Aamir’s presence in the film PK which satirised the Hindu religion.

“What more proof do we need of how tolerant we are in this country? There may be sporadic incidents of violence, but that doesn’t mean this country is unsafe for our children,” says Shatrughan Sinha.

  38. Birdman contd
During the initial moments of this film, the lead actor is mocked that he’s “not an actor, but a Celebrity.” There’s a mans battle with his ego and artistic urges, exploring the fragility of the human mind. Keaton has been chained to the superhero tag which is like a yoke around his neck pulling him down such that it hounds and pigeonholes him. (It’s ironical though how the likes of Robert Downey Jr, C Bale have successfully milked that superhero and created careers around that since & should be paying him royalty).
The fact that Keaton actually has a certain superhero baggage in real life is one of the many meta-nods here. The exquisite technique and camera jumps and the brilliant one-take technique competes with the emotional content of the film. The soundtrack is drum-heavy jazz that resonates with the ‘character’ on view.
Emma Stone is fresh from rehab, is a powerhouse performer & looks eminently beddable in a wierd kinda way. Above all, there’s something about her eyes that’s interesting. And Norton and Watts are also excellent here.. Such a theme can work only with quality talent and this film benefits from special people in direction, soundtrack and acting.

I do not speak as a committed Aamir Khan fan, though I certainly like some of his films and admire his commitment to deliver quality mainstream cinema. I speak as someone who’s tired of the expectation that everyone should say the most perfectly worded, politically correct, lawyer-vetted things in public, even if they may think otherwise privately. Despite his stardom, his clout, his riches, Aamir Khan is still a citizen of this country – an Indian who may not be “average” in any way, but still knows and feels the things the average Indian does.

It’s as if we have Facebook and Twitter accounts not to debate and argue, but to mock and maim. Nothing sums up this whole ridiculous “controversy” better than a sad little joke floating around, where a doctor says, “There is pollution in the city. Therefore your lungs…” And Anupam Kher cuts in angrily, “How dare you! This city has given you job, name, fame. How can you call it polluted? You traitor!!!” Moral of the story? Do not speak your mind in public. Be diplomatic, wave, sign autographs, keep smiling.

  42. CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani to be sacked over PM Modi tribute video

I&B Ministry decides to oust Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani after his Modi video embarrasses government; only a matter of time before official announcement is made, says ministry official

seven-minute film titled, Mera Desh Hai Mahan made public his hero worship of Modi, when Nihalani, overstepping the Ministry, ordered theatres across India screening Salman Khan starrer Prem Ratan Dhan Payo to play it during intermission. With shoddy production quality and passing off the Dubai Expressway and the Moscow International Business Centre as scenes from emerging India, the film is now less a eulogy and more a cause for unease. Nihalani later clarified that the images were necessary to convey Modi’s vision of a new India. He hoped to give Modi a moniker akin to Jawaharlal Nehru’s ‘Nehru Chacha’ when he included in his film an image of Modi in the padmasana Photoshopped against a snow-capped peak, spotted by a group of kids who shout, “Modi Kaka!”

The film was taken off theatres in two days because it had been made and aired without the Ministry’s approval.

“It is a matter of time before an official announcement will be made but the decision to replace him has already been taken,” a senior ministry official said on condition of anonymity.

The censor board has never been denegrated to this level ever. Major institutions of higher education ate being taken over by rss types. Urdu poets are being removed from school syllabus, history books are being altered to convenience by our very erudite education minister madam smriti irani. How are writers and expected to feel secure or happy in this atmosphere of illiterate brittleness. And what confidence can be instilled in the minorities when the prime minister himself makes partisan statements about communities during campaigns. He pits dalits against muslims. These things have never happened before. What does nkavi have to say about ftii?mm

    • In every democracy, the ruling party tries to leave its ideological imprint on the cultural fabric of the nation. This is par for the course. Its just that in India, no one other than Congress was in absolute power before 2014. When they were in power, they ensured that the entire Independence Struggle be categorized as an exclusive Gandhi-Nehru effort. Further, they elevated post Independence leaders, especially the Nehru family to undeserved lofty levels. So now more than 20,000 public spaces are named after this family. Is that not a disease of “Dear Leader” Sycophancy? They infused their sycophantic ideology in every cultural/historical realm and institution. They steam-rolled over any opposition just to glorify their own ideology for 60 years. Everyone seems to be going paranoid now that someone else has come and is trying to balance things out.

Wrt literature curricula in schools, it was one state govt that removed Urdu poets and replaced them with stories of local freedom fighters and mystical saints. Its not like they excluded Urdu Poets from a Urdu language course! Who is to stop the next Cong govt in Rajasthan from reversing it? And what big diff does it make anyway? American public schools give full leeway to Literature teachers in introducing and changing syllabi. Even different schools within the same school districts in the same state teach literature from different poets/authors. There is an ever expanding galaxy of writers/poets/authors in every language, so why make such a big fuss if they removed Urdu poets in one year? Why is removal of Urdu poets construed as Saffronization? Its not like they have included every local Rajasthani poet/author in their syllabi either. Btw, are Urdu poets included in school syllabi of Kerala, Tamil, Orissa, Karnataka or Maharashtra?

I do condemn the polarization attempted in the Bihar polls. They tried it and paid a heavy price. IMO, that should be evidence of India’s pluralistic strength, that cannot just be steamrolled away by polarization.

That’s one of the biggest problem with the sangh parivar. RSS played NO PART in the struggle for independence and to hide it come up with all sorts of theories and ‘truth’ to undermine those who got India its independence.

        Like

        • Exactly. RSS played no part in India’s freedom struggle. And now the BJP- RSS combine are trying their level best diminish Nehru- Gandhi legacy and their big part in the freedom struggle. More worrying to me is the slow indoctrination of young children, apparently well on its way in different pockets of the country. Some schoolchildren have received RSS admission forms that parents need to fill up or else….not surprised that Kiran may want to take her child away from such a scenario. I am glad my children are well past school age, young adults who can shape their own destiny anywhere in the world.

        • “The RSS played no part” is the kool-aid that has been fed to you over 60 yrs and you chose to believe it. If you did not have any familial/ancestral connection to RSS in the 30s, you would not know of what all they did. It is ridiculous to suggest that in a mammoth unpartitioned India, only Gandhi-Nehru were directing the independence struggle. In fact it was being carried out by thousands of people of all walks of life, who did not even have a remote connection to the Congress. I know because my ancestors were involved, and they were never part of the Congress. My grandfather went to jail with Hemu Kalani. Just read up on who Hemu Kalani was, I bet you would not know because he was never mentioned in any history textbook. It is alright if Cong did not mention his name in CBSE/ICSE, but they never let anyone mention his name even in Raj/Guj state level history. Why wipe out such history of the independence struggle? Is that not revisionism? Forget Hemu Kalani who was just a 19 yr old kid that the Brits hanged (in connivance with the Congressis who outed him!), even a huge national figure like Bose is barely given a footnote mention in national level history. I distinctly remember, CBSE history in the 80s would hardly note 3-4 lines of what Bose did, whilst dedicating entire chapters on Nehru and even Indira Gandhi!! The Indian Independence struggle was fought by 1000s of Hemu Kalanis who are never mentioned. Compare that to the American Independence Struggle. Go to tiny towns and rural areas in the US, and you will find plaques or statues of freedom fighters. Do you know that it was Vajpayee who first unveiled the statue of Hemu Kalani outside parliament? Before that successive Congi govts simply refused. It did not suit their narrative. And I wonder how many other thousands of freedom fighters lie anonymously buried in history, because 60 years of sycophancy would fear the mention of any alternate names that would take away the sheen off the Halos hoisted on the Nehrus.

All over the world, most writers and intellectuals are leftists or left of centre. So it’s not like Congress had to try hard to cultivate anything. The BJP under Vajpayee was never criticised to this extent; no awards were returned. But that’s because Vajpayee was a true statesman; he kept the Sangh under check; didn’t fall for flattery, as Modi seems to. Vajpayee appointed Vinod Khanna as the FTII chairman; even he didn’t stoop below that. And what does Modi do? They bring a non-entity like Gajendra Chauhan. Whom do they get as censor chief?Pehlaj Nihalani. What’s common between the two. Both are avid Modi bhakts, who can be activated anytime to criticise their Congress predecessors. By all means, choose a BJP sympathiser, but what’s stopping you from bringing a credible face? Are you incapable of even that? This is beyond denigration. This is not about imprint. This is about apathy towards the arts. And these two are exemplars of what’s happening to the literary atmosphere in the country. The BJP and its supporters need to ask, why things are happening now, that didn’t happen during the Vajpayee rule. No one protested then; Vajpayee was extremely popular and Sonia Gandhi and he were cordial and mild rivals so to say.

India has surpassed itself by sustaining a unified country until now. The way the world is moving towards a retarded discourse Indian should not fall behind and this looks like an excellent opportunity to catch up. Minorities were subservient and apologetic before but definitely now they need to be marginalized and terrorized. While the breeding ground is being prepared now we will definitely see a much improved performance in terrorizing minorities in future. Aamir and ilk should be thankful that being from a minority religion they are allowed to churn millions of rupees yearly. And they should make it a point to verbalize their gratitude every now and then.

Media circus has definitely gone worse. India is such a large country that you can definitely count on finding the worst of humanity there and the best also. Some of the social work being done in India has no parallels in the world and some of best human beings you can find are from India.

Indian people obsession with cinema is beyond retarded though. Cinema has overrun the mediocre minds of millions of people with their mediocre existence.

  50. Even though I have no sympathy at all for the BJP, I do think aamir needs to be more sensible and reasonable in his criticism. There has to be a sense of proportion and context. For example, he told Bhansali during a trial that he didn’t like Devdas; another time he made fun of Swades to a bunch of IIT students, telling them that he found the film boring. Then he criticised AIB recently for while he drew flak. He supported the 3 Idiots team against Chetan Bhagat without even reading the book . Then there was that famous episode of Aamir joking about SRK licking his feet and how it was his new dog called Shah Rukh. That was not meant to be offensive, but he clearly is unable to discern what could be misconstrued. You might not like Pather Panchali; but to say ‘I found it boring’ is not an acceptable answer from an actor who portrays himself as intelligence. As a public figure who people idolize, your criticism has to be measured and within context. I am of course delighted that he spoke against the government;that makes me respect him a lot. But I am also disappointed that he tends to be rash in his views, and thereby quite gauche.

I seriously feel that the whole issue has been allowed to blow out of proportion. And it is sad and scary to see the amount of hate he has invited from a big army of BJP supporters and a smaller group of other urban Indians– on Twitter ( the most toxic place on the net) as well as Facebook. He has his supporters, but they are smaller in numbers compared to the lynch mob. I wonder how he will come out of this situation if at all. “.there is a sense of fear more than there was earlier. I do feel there is a sense of insecurity. When I sit at home and talk to Kiran. (Wife) Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India? That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make to me. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers everyday. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet… growing sense of despondency. You feel depressed, you feel low.. why is it happening? This feeling exists in me too.”

Everyone faces daily intolerance from someone belonging to a different race/creed/nationality etc. Racial bashing, Religion bashing, Gay-bashing is prevalent in each corner of developed nations. At least in democracies, the victims find recourse through the judicial systems. But did all liberals in those countries engage in AwardWaapsi? I can tell you about the issues some people do have — not getting housing due to religion, not getting a job, not even getting admission into a good school, being forced to study language, history and other subjects as per the dictates of the prevailing political dispensation — these are fears that many Indians have, of late. One lady I know has said that she wishes to live abroad in a safe democracy where her children will not be forced to read whatever the government feels is right. And these are just a few of the worries.

        Like

        • That precisely is the issue. History has alway been taught from Govt. view. Do you think whatever that has been taught is right till now? No one has lived in that era to write truthful history. History is interpretation of different sources. To suggest one is better than other is untenable argument. When you can not discern what is right now, how can you tell things 400 or 1000 years ago?

Most of these arguments are based on confirmation bias. You have view and you tend to look at comments which supports your view (it probably is true for me and others as well). I am not suggesting, don’t criticize but the view should be backed by data. If I say I was in Bangalore during Tipu Jayanti and there was nothing like what was shown on TV doesn’t make my statement or TV more truthful.

In gist, it is the same argument that BOI gives better data than other sources!

I personally think that people living in india, are hard upon themselves. Travel a bit. You will know what I mean. People with turbans here in big cities in US, have to wear baseball caps to hide it. In india you will see men with dreadlocks, half-naked fakirs, burqa clad women and no one, will make you feel uncomfortable or give you a second look because it is all to common sight. diversity is just a simple fact of day to day life. Not so in west.

Agree, kind of like if you go to Rhode Island, very common to see men holding hands and kissing in public place. many places in Europe has nude beach, etc… every society has it’s own common things.

IF she said that, I agree with her. Being celebrity, you have onus of not creating enviroment that will lead to furthur stress for sake of more publicity for your upcoming movie! I think aamir jumped into the bandwagon a bit late, tooting his horn, to compete with SRK and get some cheap publicity! I totally think that now.

  55. Di, he was asked about intolerance and he said yes it was there. Some of us believe it to be the reality. You may not agree, but I feel that there is an element of truth to the increased intolerance charge. Indians in general are a tolerant lot but the present political mood has brought a change in tenor, so there is less tolerance in some pockets. And I am sorry, I don’t think he was jumping onto the SRK intolerance remark bandwagon. His only dumb action was mentioning his wife’s apprehensions. And Sofia’s remarks about SRK -Aamir having a divisive attitude — I do not agree.

    • I think the intolerance debate will go round and round. The dalits, the patels, the minorities, the have-nots…they will all talk about “intolerance”….in India (or elsewhere). In the end, everyone basically wants more equality, more wealthy, more opportunities. I think the word “intolerance” is not a correct word IMO. It is angst. Angst of people who hate modi and losing their privs under his governance. If I were to believe everything MSM says, it would be difficult to step out of home. I would look to science, to numbers. India has had far more violent history or violence in past e.g. Under English, under Aurangzeb etc. I personally don’t think there is sudden lack of peace, increase in violence in last few months or few years even. It is easy to spread hate and fear atmosphere.

By insulting him, we are insulting a true patriot and well wisher of India while we worship the fake ones who are opportunists to the core. The more they abuse, the more they slap, the more they kill and maim, it is India’s loss losing sane voices in the bargain. It is not about intolerance against one particular community or for that matter two. It is the lynch mob mentality who kill people during road rage and other disputes irrespective of caste and religion. It is fight over who is the biggest star. It is the fight over which language is supreme. Take Telengana and andhra dispute for example. The way andhra people were derided on social media, I felt andhra is another hostile country. Periyar used to beat hindu idols with chappals while praising other religions. His statues are intact in tamil nadu because of fear. Brahmins were almost driven out of tamil nadu just like pandits were driven out. Not by violence but by reservations policy. India is deeply divided. We need sane voices to make India stronger. Not running away. But staying put. If we love our country, we should stay here and contribute towards sanity among people. Fortunately India has so many diversities which will allow everyone some space to breathe and express ourselves. If there are detractors, there are supporters too.

      • Vladimir Putin’s speech – SHORTEST SPEECH EVER.

On August 04, 2013, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, addressed the Duma, (Russian Parliament), and gave
a speech about the tensions with minorities in Russia:

“In Russia, live like Russians. Any minority, from anywhere, if it wants to live in Russia, to work
and eat in Russia, it should speak Russian, and should respect the Russian laws. If they prefer Sharia Law,
and live the life of Muslim’s then we advise them to go to those places where that’s the state law.
“Russia does not need Muslim minorities. Minorities need Russia, and we will not grant them special privileges,
or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell ‘discrimination’.
We will not tolerate disrespect of our Russian culture. We better learn from the suicides of America,
England, Holland and France, if we are to survive as a nation. The Muslims are taking over those countries
and they will not take over Russia. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of
culture or the primitive ways of Sharia Law and Muslims.
“When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the Russian
national interest first, observing that the Muslims Minorities Are Not Russians.”
The politicians in the Duma gave Putin a five minute standing ovation.

Meanwhile Talveen Singh has a question too for you Master
Will you just keep posting syuff against the Hindus and f or are you actually going to say something about ISIS too Master !!!!!

If Indian Islam is to be saved from this ‘evil death cult’, to use David Cameron’s words, then a huge responsibility falls on educated, moderate Muslims like Aamir Khan. It is for them to persuade the men who control Islamic seminaries and the Imams who create a sense of grievance in their sermons, to start opposing Wahhabi ideas.

Instead Muslim celebrities like Aamir have used their public statements to insist that jihadi terrorism has nothing to do with Islam. It is pointless saying this since the men who behead journalists in the Islamic State and rape infidel women quote verses from the Koran to justify their evil deeds.

    जन-गण-मन, तमाशा और मैं : आँखों देखी
    —————————————————-
    दिन शुक्रवार /तारीख़ 27 November / फ़िल्म- तमाशा/ Phoenix market city kurla mumbai/ Time: 9.20 pm

मुंबई में फ़िल्म शुरू होने से पहले स्क्रीन पर लिखा आता है ‘please stand up for national anthem’, इस please पर थोड़ा ध्यान दीजिएगा stand up for national anthem नहीं आता है, बड़ा सा ‘please’ लिखा हुआ होता है।

    ‘Fucking, you have to stand for it’ अंकल ने जब यही लाइन कई बार अलग अलग ‘टोन’ में रिपीट करके कही तो भीड़ इकट्ठा होने लगी। उस फ़ैमिली ने बोला ‘खड़े नहीं हुए इसका ये मतलब नहीं कि respect नहीं करते’

    इस पर अंकल ने कहा
    ‘रिस्पेक्ट कैसे नहीं देगा तू, Fucking, you have to stand for it.

    My brief take–
Ok, there’s a mention of Russia above somewhere so let’s take that example
Leninism and Stalinism are contrasting in some ways but continuum in others, but both are needed. Whilst everyone is looking the other way from mass beheadings & mass sexual slavery by ISIS, only Putin actually bombed ISIS ( albeit with complex intentions)

Btw, There’s a subtle difference between tolerance & FOOLISH OBSEQUIOUSNESS

India has been ruled for too long. The ‘converted’ actually either don’t know this subtle difference or have been pounded into submission & accepting FOOLISH OBSEQUIOUSNESS as ‘tolerance’ (or are effectively neutered….)

I don’t mind political discussions once in a while and they’re certainly relevant to this thread to a degree. But these things just turn foolish beyond a point or worse. Even that can be tolerated if there aren’t a 100 comments saying the same things over and over again. I’m tempted to shut down this thread but I’m giving it another shot. But unnecessary comments here will simply be deleted. And the thread might just be shut down anyway.
