  2. Wrong first look. You can’t title your movie ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and just show ‘Bajirao’ in the first look. Similar with movies like Jodha Akbar, Veer Zaara or even Romeo & Juliet, you just can’t show 1 person in first look unless its separate posters for the characters.

The saga of the Peshwas is neither drab or dull, but replete with all the ingredients necessary for a best-selling novel romance, intrigue, internal bickering, even open revolt. There was Bajirao I’s ill-fated love affair with the Muslim dancer, the beautiful and accomplished Mastani. Religion played a major part in the lives of the Peshwas, and despite the love that Baijirao and Mastani shared, they both knew there was no future for them, and that sooner or later it would have to end.

At the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, a large collection of items of every-day use have been lovingly collected and tastefully displayed. Here even the most ordinary piece has taken on a special beauty. In this unique museum, a whole wing is given to a section of the mansion built by the besotted Bajirao for Mastani. Reconstructed as a tribute to the grandeur of a bygone era, the Mastani Mahal, remains a reminder one of the great romances of our land.

Yum! Only Ranveer Singh can make such delicious statements! And to top it up, Ranveer adds more tadka to it. Ask him about romancing two ladies in Bajirao Mastani he has a very quirky take.
To Filmfare, Ranveer said, “Kashi (Priyanka) is the good wife; Mastani (Deepika) is the seductress. They are playing are different parts. One is homely and the other is a warrior princess. One is khichadi and one is a biryani. But it is a tadke wali khichadi. Lucky Bajirao – he has hot wife and a hot girlfriend (laughs).”

Btw, Mastaani was of Turkish heritage. Deepika with her ghati looks shudve been Kashibai. Perhaps Katrina (if she cudve acted) was a better choice for Mastaani.

      • Among all current top female actors, I think Deepika will be the last choice for a muslim princess role. I think Ram-Leela kinda ruined the casting for Bhansali. It gave him courage to make this movie but also made him to repeat take Ranveer and Deepika witnessing their chemistry and popularity. If there was no Ram-Leela or if Kareena would have ended up doing it, then Bhansali would have cast Katrina or Kareena as Mastani and not Deepika.

  5. So, the clash between Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani seems confirmed. Ideally, one of them would have postponed the release. In today’s scenario where everything (sadly) seems to be based on a great opening week-end, this doesn’t spell good for any of the 2 movies.

    • yeah but no one wud want to budge also as 18th dec to 5th Jan is a meaty period for any film with big canvas…………only thing looks inevitable is that OSO vs Saawariya repeat – and this time also SLB will loose hands down 😦 but riding on DP’s charm – if he can manage ti beat SRK/KAJOL – that will be a history and will make a bigger headline than the Bahubali BO nos 😉

      • I think at the end of the day the only thing that matters is whether a film was a hit or not. The rest of this stuff makes for good media copy for a while and then people forget about it once the releases have come and gone. But a failure doesn’t go away that easily. Even if one assumes the film is a hit why not give it more breathing room? The bar for this film is in any case higher. No one’s going to ‘forget’ to watch Dilwale if they otherwise intended to. With or without competition. The ‘blockbuster’ kind of film always has that advantage. On the other hand the Bajirao kind of deal has to convince many folks. Specially when the lead star isn’t up there. Doesn’t mean that the film cannot be a hit. Just that the bar gets higher. And there is no holiday season advantage when you have that kind of competition. But yeah Deepika’s in the zone. That’s for sure!

Dilwale is major front runner. Rohit Shetty is a mass director, SRK/Kajol, DDLJ nostalgia – it’s not just got an edge, it is a clear front runner.
I wouldn’t however discount Bhansali completely. The Saawariya/OSO comparison is not particularly great as Saawariya was a dud! An in form Bhansali film can compete but it boils down to what kind of screening space it gets. If BB is releasing on 4,500 one would think come Dec we are talking about a share between 5,000 screens.
Ultimately not good news for either film but like you say all that matters is whether the film is liked and is a hit. If P.K alone made 340 crore in its run – these two films release a week earlier on more screen counts so the combined can be much north of 340 crore. No reason why over a 5 week period they cannot rake in north of 400 crore between them if they hit the mark.
The Deepika factor cannot be ignored either and I would fancy the music of BM over Dilwale.

        • The only thing this clash has confirmed is that Dilwaale will not be creating any Day 1 or weekend records. There is no doubt it will open bigger than BM but the records are no longer possible as theatres will share footfalls. Additionally the competition will also ensure that any drop in collections due to poor content will show earlier than usual as the audience will have a choice now.

And Satyam, BM is a big movie too, has a director who is coming on the back of a hit and has the same lead pair as that movie. So I don’t think it will need much convincing had it released alone. It will play second fiddle to Dilwaale but will put up good numbers of its own.

        • Both films business are going to be hit by the other for sure. But if both films have merit both can succeed. However, Dilwale I would expect to put up much bigger opening numbers. Rohit Shetty is a much more ‘safe’ director for a festive film, plus added benefits of the SRK/Kajol/Dilwale name nostalgia.

        • @Krish

I doubt Dilwale would have broken any opening records had it come solo anyway. It’s first day and weekend are not holidays! I’m not sure also if the hype of Dilwale will match PK (which I think has the non-holiday opening record) around the date of release either.
Clearly, SRK was going for the lifetime record when he set the 18th Dec date, Dilwale needed a solo run and (unlikely) spectacular content to get there. I think its safe to say that unless Rohit Shetty really surpasses himself, the lifetime record has gone with BM arriving on 18th Dec.

Agree this clash talk here benefits BM in a big way and at least people will know whats coming on so and so date. I think this is what BM crowd is aiming being a movie with smaller stars. The fear of coming like a BV and vanishing is less, though being a self indulging historical can be a huge turn off for a major audience. Lets be frank SLB has had his Guzaarish moment pretty recently. The grandness of a Devdas would be completely lost if it did not have srk-aish combo/ chemistry. Even then a lot many found the movie crap and the movie never reached its true potential.

  11. I think the time has come where clashes are unavoidable. You have only few weeks of holiday season in India and minimum 2 movies should be released. Also, this moves away from stupid day 1 records, morning show records and all that and only matters is the lifetime records.

Already, SRK movies has clashes, Salman’s Sooraj Barjatya movie is clashing with Sunny’s Ghayal Returns(though its 1 sided) and Salman’s Sultan has clash and I’m sure something will release alongside Dangal as well. Sometimes you might get lucky as solo release as no other big movie is ready to release at that moment(like Bajrangi Bhaijan) but I hope clashes becomes the norm henceforth.

    • Why are big banners and top stars not more open to releasing on non-holiday dates? If opening records don’t matter as we know and its the lifetime that does then why not back the content of your film and release it on a non-holiday date? In that way, you might get more breathing space for your film and less ‘clashes’. The only advantage I see of these big clashes is that both films get publicity, probably more than they would have as a solo release.

      • People especially families are more inclined to watch movies during festivals and gatherings rather than daily routine work life. Its not about holiday’s (like even Aug 15 is holiday but it isn’t same thing like Eid/Diwali/Chritmas) and during such big seasons, big stars would want to be the first choice and available for their audience.

    • I dont think he is lacking that atall, wasnt salman first choice for this film during his much fitter body? That is how Bajirao was, unlike fat, obese bulky heavyweight fighter.
More than that, his voice adds more royal and warrior king feel to it, unlike childish pretentious voice of Hrithik in JA.

      Like

    • the real problem is that Ranveer completely lacks gravitas for the part. The physicality in some literal sense is less important but one must look ‘serious’. Hrithik didn’t as Akbar either (he was the D2 guy with costumes) but then Gowariker made it a lighter ‘family oriented’ deal with Akbar having vegetarian days and what not! Now admittedly Gowariker said his real inspiration was the Amar Chitra Katha but the film was too uneven to convey even that sort of tone consistently. The lesson Bhansali should have learnt though is that if you’re going to be non-serious you should at least had enough of a star. Whether the latter is right for the part or not the audience will otherwise like watching him. The previews otherwise seem fine but Ranveer seems completely out of place. His look works I think but he just doesn’t have any meaning as a star and this is crucial for any sort of historical. Of course audiences today are probably too bankrupt to mind this too much. Honestly the whole film looks like a fancy dress thing or theme event as far as the two leads are concerned. Deepika too is out of her league here.

  18. I think having someone like Ranver as Bajirao works better. For a fantasy, a big star is okay. For even a half-serious historical, an established star and the image baggage comes in the way of creating a believable flesh and bood character. That’s why Ben Kngsley as Gandhi waorks way better than say Tom Cruise or Johny Depp would have worked; and Frahan Akhtar as Milkha Singh works way better than say Aksya Kumar or Salman Khan would have worked.

    “Cause of death
According to popular folklore, Mastani committed suicide after hearing about Bajirao’s death, by drinking poison from a ring which she was wearing. Others say that she jumped into the funeral pyre of her husband and committed sati. No documentation is available to confirm the actual cause. However, it is accepted that she did not live long after Bajirao’s demise and died in 1740.[5]

Kashibai took Mastani’s six-year-old son Shamsher Bahadur (also named as Krushnarao) into her household and raised him as one of her own.”

  34. Bajirao Mastani complete: Will be 2 hours 30 mins long

The entire shooting of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ambitious historical Bajirao Mastani has been wrapped up. And now, Sanjay Leela Bhansali gets ready for the biggest battle of his career.

Bhansali seems all set to take on the formidable Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale which releases on the same day December 18, with no possibility of either juggernaut release moving away in time before the big collision at the box-office.

To ensure optimum results, the filmmaker-composer has also edited the film completely. All post-production including the background music of Bajirao Mastani is complete.

Says a source close to the project, “Last week, the entire shooting was wrapped up. Aur mazey ki baat yeh hai ke editing bhi ho gaya. Sanjay’s editor Rajesh Pandey who has earlier edited Sanjay’s Goliyon Ki Raaslila Ram Leela was on the job, as the shooting progressed. The editing got done while the shooting was in progress.”

The film’s play-time has been kept down at 2 hours 30 mins. Says the source, “Considering the epic format and how much footage it takes to narrate historical sagas Sanjay Bhansali’s determination to keep the length down to 2 1/2 hours is truly valorous. The film was originally supposed to run into more than 220 minutes of playing-time He has sacrificed songs and dances to keep the playing-time in check.”

The film a lavish war epic has been shot at an estimated budget of Rs. 160 crores and will be pitched by its producers as the Mughal-e-Azam of this millennium.

A petition has been filed against the film in the Pune court seeking a ban on it, alleging that it has distorted the history related to King Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa and his family members.

The petition was filed yesterday which allegedly says that the historical facts has been wrongly portrayed in the film while showing King Bajirao and his wives Kashibai and Mastani.

It further states that ‘Pinga’ dance is the integral part of Marathi culture and is portrayed like a item song in the film. Earlier, Prasadrao Peshwa, the descendant of Bajirao Peshwa I alleged that the historical facts has been altered while portraying the king and his wives in the film.

The hearing of this petition case will be happening on 26th November where advocate Wajid Khan will represent Hemant Patil, the president of NGO-Bharat Against Corruption who filed this petition. Magistrate S. S Bhule will judge the case.

A letter was sent to Maharashtra’s CM Devendra Fadanvis by Prasadrao to look into this matter and review the film before its release.

The soundtrack of Bajirao Mastani merges traditional raga elements with contemporary sounds that would perhaps gel with the average 20-something youth who probably don’t know that film music was once created live on studio floors.

  50. “The kind of dance been shown in the film is wrong. They have never danced and neither has Shrimant Bajirao danced. I have objection with the songs, ‘Pinga’ and ‘Malhaar’. Also, the lyrics of ‘Pinga’ are unacceptable. The makers of the film have never consulted us to get any detail on the great warrior. So we want them to show us the film before its release,”

“The costumes used for the ‘Pinga’ are inappropriate. I object to way the actresses have shown skin.”

“We want them to show us the movie so that if we find any more incorrect historical facts, we can ask them to change them and only then release the film. We are not demanding a ban.”

“I don’t think Ranveer matches the kind of look that Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa had. Bhansali (who has also produced the film) should have considered someone as good looking as the warrior was.”

    • “.. should have considered someone as good looking as the warrior was.”

Most silliest reason ever!!! However the warrior looked, I don’t think he would have been more good looking than Ranveer Singh or in other words Ranveer is not bad looking at all. At least among current leading stars, not many would look as good Ranveer in that bald look.

  52. 15 years back China had stunned the world with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The Ang Lee directed film had become a global phenomenon when the Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh starrer had found acceptance wherever it was released. Its visuals had done the trick and with the kind of new action and grandeur that the film had to offer, it was considered to be an apt cinema to arrive at the turn of the Millennium. Now with Bajirao Mastani, Chinese could well be glad to have a similar film arrive on their shores, and that too on a large global scale.

“With the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, they are ready to be stunned themselves,” informs our source, “As we talk, the deal has been almost cracked with the Chinese distributors. Bajirao Mastani, with all its splendor, would be releasing in China on a massive scale. Trade estimates put the screen count in a range of over 6000.”

“PK has been the biggest Indian release in China when it opened on 4600 screens. On the other hand Happy New Year had released at around 5000 screens. Now it is time for Bajirao Mastani to spread the wings. The Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra starrer, due to its historical theme, is being looked as a kind of cinema that Chinese would love to watch on the big screen. The similarity in cultural aspects and core ethos further helps in the relatability quotient. Distributors there are very excited and Eros, which has a huge distribution alliance with them, is putting in all the effort,” the source adds.
