PRDP wont reach 194 cr now. 200 cr was minimum expected before release. Most were saying anything below 200 cr is flop for such big budget most anticipated movie of the year.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has seen dropping collections after the first week. The film is still a big hit due to the huge first week but should really have held better at the box office The business of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in Hindi till date is as follows.

    Week One – 163.89 crore (8 days)
    Week Two – 24.56 crore
Week Three – 3.50 crore (expected)

    Total – 191.95 crore

The best performance is in Mumbai circuit where the film will do around 72 crore nett but Delhi / UP has not performed well as collections will remain below 35 crore nett which means it is not even in the top ten films of Delhi / UP. The North India business is the big let down as when North plus the circuits where Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has done well all do well then it normally results in a blockbuster.

      Q. Bajirao Mastaani has got huge appreciation across the board for its theatrical trailer and a lot of surveys put its trailer at least on par with Dilwale so can it do better?
Ans. Bajirao Mastaani despite its huge budget is still like a regional film so for many parts of India its a word of mouth film irrespective that it looks made on a big scale. Even if Bajirao Mastaani is the best film of the year it will still find it hard to beat Dilwale as it will under perform in many regions. The only way it will beat Dilwale is if Dilwale is poor and that scenario is more like Dilwale beating Dilwale rather than Bajirao Mastaani beating Dilwale.

  2. Tamasha Drops On Weekdays
    Friday 04 December 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The collections of Tamasha dropped after a fair weekend. The drop on Monday was over 50% and the falls continued over the weekdays. The first week collections are 53 crore nett which is the eighth highest first week of 2015. The dropping weekday numbers make it tough for the film despite Hate Story 3 not being much competition as it holds little appeal where Tamasha has had its best performance.

The best collections were in Mysore which had the fourth highest first week of the year at around 4.75 crore nett. Mumbai went to 18 crore nett plus while Delhi / UP was around 10 crore nett. Delhi /UP should have done much better for this type of film and Delhi / NCR should have been the best performer across India.

The film is another setback for Ranbir Kapoor who is struggling to get the numbers since Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The stardom is intact as talent is there but working with directors like Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap and Anurag Basu means a struggle at the box office as they have a story telling style which just alienates most of the audience, so whether the story is good or bad, the treatment given to it will mean the sort of numbers expected by the industry from Ranbir will not happen. A few years back they may have been able to get away with it.

But there is a shift in the paradigm of the box office over the last 18 months which makes it even harder for these type of directors unless they make non star low budget films. This slow shifting paradigm will continue over the next few years making it even harder for this sort of cinema to survive unless of course its low budget and comes without the baggage of stars.

  3. Hate Story 3 Has Good Opening At The Box Office
    Friday 04 December 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

This week saw three releases and all three were adult releases, Angry Indian Goddesses, Hate Story 3 and Kajarya. Hate Story is a successful franchise with the first two films doing pretty well and Hate Story 3 is another erotic thriller like the first two though with a bigger budget and probably more successful music than the first two which has enabled the film to get a good 30-35% opening on average.

The opening is better in certain centres where this genre does better but generally the opening is good and will easily surpass the start of Hate Story 2 which collected 4.50 crore nett on its opening day.

The main objective of the film is to keep this momentum into the evening and into Saturday as sometimes this genre does not go far after the initial. The film will have limited revenue from satellite and Overseas so it is about recovering the 20 crore odd investment from India theatrical and then music can be the plus. The film has a wide release of 2500 screens. Angry Indian Goddesses opened poorly at around 5% but was still much better than Kajarya which had no audience.

Overall, #Tamasha biz is disappointing in India. Better than #BombayVelvet, #Besharam, #Roy, but similar to #Rockstar, released in 2011.

And yes they were celebrating Salman getting 3 200 grossers in a row (never mind that PRDP is going to do far less than Kick!). As always there’s a total dishonesty here. One can of course see what Tamasha is or isn’t doing but that’s irrelevant if the commentary is going to be blatantly dishonest.

    • Q. Thers is a lot of negativity around Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with folks like Jayshah, Satyam & co saying the films has not been liked, is that true?

Ans. The film will do around 200 crore nett in India and 115 crore plus in Overseas and this is with just one major holiday. Some will put it down to Salman Khan star power but Jai Ho with one major holiday did just a bit more than half the business of PRDP. It is true that the film has not been liked all over India, as for the negativity it is mainly because the film has been liked in places Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and not liked in Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore so what you see in the press and cyber world is more reflective of the latter. Films that are liked in the metros like Baby, Badlapur or Piku have positivity while a Prem Ratan Dhan Payo or Gabbar Is Back will have negativity although box office fate of last two is better as box office tends to reflect the whole country rather than a few big metros.

  6. Tough times for Ranbir. 4 consecutive set-backs. And his next movie is a long-delayed one that is being re-shot. Maybe Hirani will bail him out but he will have lost quite a lot of time and ground if he is relying on that.

As for PRDP, it is the latest to join the list of major disappointments. It is right up there alongside HNY and Krrish 3, even if it may have earned a bit more than the latter two. All these these movies have earned huge money at the BO and on paper PRDP’s near to 200cr total looks good. These movies aren’t flops technically.

The fact remains that the sky was the limit for these movies but limited appreciation has meant that they have under-achieved. The poor trending tells the whole story.

  8. Somehow I see Tamasha as a marketing failure. They promised a YJHD kinda deal and delivered a different, edgier, darker movie. This lead to a good start but rather mixed to negative feedback. If they’d promoted it for what it was, maybe the start would have been lower but the word of mouth would have been stronger leading to a stronger hold on weekdays. Most people who didn’t like it went in expecting to see a breezy romcom like YJHD with a little bit of drama perhaps and got the opposite. Rather sad cos I think it is a terrific movie and has the potential to be a cult classic if it ages well.

    1) Most of the southern suburbs sit right on the river banks

    2) The airport sits on the flood basin of the river. The second runaway, in fact, was built over the river.

    3) The Cooum River is flowing well above the danger mark. The normal flow is blocked by garbage and even settlements in areas where it runs dry.

    4) Places like SRM, Satyabhama College, the much-vaunted IT corridor and the Phoenix malls sit on water bodies.

    5) The flow of the Oterri canal in North East Madras is also blocked by the bypass that connects NH45 to NH4.

They just manage to f*ck up every thing they lay their hands on. Imagine being worried about environmental damage as an excuse to not bomb a 10 mile long truck convoy supplying oil and enriching the douchebags.

For eg A now common scenario of some killers running amok of killing and raping innocents

The typical reaction of folks like “aamirsfan”–
Blame EVERYTHING from perceived injustice (debatable), lack of entertainment, frustration, bad mood, bad weather, lack of wife or girlfriend (for mass rapes) etc etc
BUT NOT the perpetrators and their mindset !!
When pushed further there’s a cursory “we don’t support killing of innocents” addendum
But there’s a continued theory wherein other acts are TIED In to this as a means of JUSTIFICATION …
When pushed further in a debate –there’s a total DENIAL of the whole event eg 911 a cia conspiracy nothing to do with the ‘alleged’ criminals.
Even going further there’s a VEILED THREAT implicit in this that if xyz bombing happens this will occur !
Finally when things start to bite hard ie backlash onto them (that’s wrong) there are candle light vigils on the surface

The likes of aamir and Srk have never openly condemned these acts or violent mindset but they found india intolerant.

This ‘aamirsfan’ thinking is fortunately not in most of the aggrieved people all around the world. Aggrievement and sorrow exists everywhere but not everyone picks up the violent bloody means to counter it repeatedly in a pattern …That’s why the world still exists and hasn’t yet pressed the self destruct button ..

  11. I’m going to respond to the Nykavi-Aamirsfan exchange here this way (though these remarks are not directed specifically to either one)..

Zizek says somewhere that he’d rather not live in a society where everything is up for ‘discussion’ and where for example if someone wants to discuss whether rape is acceptable or not that such a person is immediately dismissed as crazy and no one tries to debate this subject one way or the other.

The same applies or ought to apply to something as obscene and as sickening as the shootings we’ve just seen in CA. But those in the FBI who are trying to figure out how this happened, how this couple got radicalized, whether the woman in question was just a supporter of ISIS on her own or whether she received more support than this from them (seems to be the former as far as one can tell so far…) are not ‘crazy’ or apologists for the terrorism!

If all the sicknesses of the world went away just by criticizing them enough it would be a rather simple world that would have become paradise a long time back. Yes a thing must be called by its proper name. If there is this sickness which exists in the contemporary Islamic world it of course must be called out by its proper name and addressed as such. But in doing so unfortunately (for those who refuse to be educated in this or any other matter) one has to go through complicated histories of religion, politics, sociology. This at the very least. It’s very easy to state that Hitler was disgusting and what he did constituted one of the great crimes of human history. One could make every person in this world of 7 bn repeat this and one could walk away patting oneself on the back. Unfortunately that would bring one no closer to an understanding of how Hitler came about and how it was that he was able to do all this.

Following the Zizek perspective certain things are so self-evident they needn’t even be discussed. That this crime in San Bernardino is that sort of repulsive act ought to be self-evident in the same way. I would prefer to assume most people start from that position. I wouldn’t insist that people first ‘prove’ to me that they find this act offensive or disgusting. The same for Hitler. the same for so many other examples.

But then when a larger conversation necessarily has to follow (and here I’m with the FBI!) no one should get into this structure of ‘hey he or she is not calling them out’. Often we expose our own bigotry in making such calls. every right winger in the US and Europe makes such calls! It is because the bigot wishes to confuse the two issues that such a framing is advanced. Here’s my quick example. However much I might be against the politics of Hindutva I never confuse it with the word ‘Hindu’. Now many in the former camp wish to do exactly this as a political move but there’s no reason why I should follow them, specially when I know that they’re factually wrong in every sense imaginable. When there are pogroms in Delhi in ’84 or Gujarat in ’02 I hold certain groups of people responsible. I don’t expect every Hindu in India to get up and say ‘I’m not with those who murdered Sikhs or Muslims’. Because that too would be obscene. Unless I am a bigot why would I assume this? People wishing for such certificates already have bigotry in their minds.

I am also not with those who glibly say the moment a Muslim terrorist does something ‘hey he’s not Muslim at all’. I can understand politicians saying these things for strategic reasons but not otherwise. The problem must be confronted head-on. It would again be a rather easy world if every time someone did something awful in the name of religion if we could simply dismiss them as not belonging to the fold. They very much belong to the fold. The perversions of a religious ideology much like any other political ideology are part of that religion or political grouping. These interpretations no matter how sickening are always ‘possible’. Much as it would be quite absurd to say Stalin had nothing to do with Marx! One could say he was a very poor reader of Marx but someone who considered himself in that line nonetheless. When we dismiss these connections or when we refuse to take these claims seriously just because the people connected with them do monstrous things we refuse ourself the possibility of understanding ‘how’ and ‘why’ these things happen. We refuse to ask the right questions and therefore unsurprisingly we don’t get the right answers.

One must be universal in these matters. One cannot feel a little more worse when it’s Muslims being killed but not when it’s Hindus or Christians or whatever. Similarly certainly obscene crimes should be recognized as such immediately wherever and whenever they occur. One mustn’t lack the moral compass to do this everywhere. One mustn’t pretend to look for the ‘evidence’ in certain cases or accept self-serving myths to excuse people one thinks are ‘one’s own’ and then play the same sort of politics on the other side. Does one wish to use Islamists to attack Islam? Does one want to use Nazism to attack Christians? does one want to use Stalin to attack all kinds of Marxism? Does one wish to use Hindutva’s excesses to attack all forms of ‘Hinduism’? Does the Tea Party in America or the brand of toxic Republican politics make every Republican ‘crazy’? Again these questions have to be universal. You can’t just selectively ask them. The problem is we’re more interested in our labels than the truth. If someone wants to argue about colonial grievances or some other religious grievances as a means of defending this kind of atrocity (the shooting in CA) I’m not even listening. I’m not ready to have that debate! I am willing to examine all the histories for all the reasons I’ve described. As long as this one point isn’t debatable.

I’d lastly add this. One must be very clear about what categories one is discussing and not regard things as self-evident. Killing lots of people for some sort of ’cause’ is perverted but one should be sure that one does not support the same under other labels. For example I don’t think dropping atomic bombs on cities is justifiable no matter what the reasons. I don’t think using the machinery of the state to abet or not resist pogroms is ok irrespective of the causes involved. I don’t think committing genocide on half a country’s population is ok no matter what excuses are offered. In all of these cases first of all I am fortunately not confused about the ‘evidence’ as many tend to become depending on who they’re supporting. There isn’t moral equivalency in all of these cases. Some examples are worse than others. But let’s not pretend that we never ever support the killing of people. We do. We all do. We just hide behind different labels when we do so. Islamist terrorism of the kind that is all too common in our world is one of the most disgusting features of the present. But we are often blind to similar loss of life when it happens in other parts of the world. More importantly we defend it when we accept the larger ‘ism’ being it. We certainly accept everything the State does as defensible in this sense. This isn’t the same as bigotry but we should be far more self-critical in these matters as well. The monstrous always happens in the world in the name of some ‘good’.

Yes.. the Islamist terrorist should be called by his or her proper name. He or she is a Muslim. But let’s call everything by its proper name. Not just this.

[As an aside on the gun control issue.. saying that terrorists will nonetheless find a way is like saying one shouldn’t have any laws against murder or whatever on the books because gangsters will still find ways to kill people…]

[one more aside.. let’s not drown this thread in political discussions.. some comments.. reasonable ones.. are fine.. but not an endless to and fro…]

I just want to clarify (even though you said it was not directed to me or NyKavi) if I sounded like I was defending this crime then my apologies. There is no excuse for killing someone if you have some disagreements with…and this act of violence has no defense just like the previous mass shootings have no defense.

My argument has more to do with how the US reacts to this kind of stuff and when it comes to hit and miss…it is 99.9% a miss. These guys were Pakistani; they believed in the faith of Islam; obviously I have no problem acknowledging this fact. OK I acknowledged it, what does that exactly achieve? Does it make the other feel better? So whether or not to call it ‘Islamic terrorism’…I do have a problem with because as you said (though not to this point), we should be universal when it comes to this issue…terrorism is terrorism is terrorism…whether one does it in the name of Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism or any kind of ‘ism’.

IMHO, there is this growing doomsday obsession which is being exacerbated through a self-fulfilling prophecy of violent counter-cycles. It behooves every educated, scientifically minded practical person to frantically put an end to this doomsday obsession. Otherwise, the fear is of far greater catastrophes (eg loose nukes) being committed to feed this self-fulfilling prophecy.
On a lighter vein, I was subjected to derision and laughter when in 2012 I questioned my local Hindu temple priest about said end of days. Based on ancient texts, I was to be rest assured that ‘sarvanash’ is at least a billion years away. Whew!

        • yes great piece.. the only thing I’d add though is that it’s not just about religion. This is also a kind of myth. All the horrible things that people do in the name of religion they can as easily do in the name of non-religious politics. The examples are too many to even get into. Ethnic slaughter for example. Or at the other end suicide bombings by LTTE figures. I’d in any case argue that even where the causes are religious they’re often political framings of religious texts in very programmatic ways but even if one doesn’t want to get into this distinction religion is not the only thing that leads to such violence. Again we nurture this myth that as long as people believe in certain ‘irrational’ ideas that they are then able to do horrible things. But non-religious excuses do just as well. Part of the reason for this (and somewhat ironically) is that those ideas of nationality and ethnicity and so on are ‘myths’ in ways analogous to religious myths. I can’t get into all of this here at length but nationality for example is a fiction as is ethnicity. There is nothing ‘natural’ about these things.

yes this was a well thought out and nicely written piece. I, of course disagree again with the premise that religion is *the* reason for all these violent acts around the world. If we take out all the religions in the world today..there would still be violence and chaos around the world, IMO. Culture and political ideology has a lot to do with violence today, more so than a religious belief (again IMO).

To be honest, focusing on what kind semantics we should or should not use takes away from focusing on the root causes of the problem. All Aamir said was that he disagreed with what that reporter said about calling it Islamic terrorism…and I think it is OK to disagree on that ‘issue’ but lets not dwell too much on the semantics here.

U can’t adopt medieval lines of thinking on one hand, cover your women in veils on one hand while talk of zizek on the other ?!!

U can’t leave your oppressive & lands (Saudi and pak in this instance!) and head to the west, enjoy the freedom and liberty and all the good life that brings but then suddenly start picking and choosing your grievances…

The actual culprits on the ground are brainwashed and may actually have had a tortured past, but the bigger culprits are the ‘aamirsfan’ like syndrome. They are just one or two steps away from the same actions –it’s just they haven’t been pushed enuf yet.

  13. & you are exhibit A of trying to desperately prove points & spin by wordplay. The wrong assumption here is that throwing in zizek (& lots of words volume wise !!) will automatically make ones argument weighty. These things work with kids and default fanboys/girls who either genuinely get impressed by such stuff or have to praise just to survive on blogs but I don’t have either of these compulsions. Just by getting a few fanboys /girls or autonots nod in approval doesn’t help things.
I know bits of zizek but don’t quote him willy nilly but just as examples in the world of zizek —
The true ethical test is not only the readiness to save the victims, but also – even more, perhaps – the ruthless dedication to annihilating those who made them victims.
Also zizek feels that the liberal idea of tolerance is more and more a kind of intolerance. What it means is ‘Leave me alone; don’t harass me; I’m intolerant towards your over-proximity.”

The problem is when there’s an attempt to subvert things and align them the way one wants to as per the ‘spin’ needed.
As for ‘aamirsfan’ there’s nothing against him personally he himself sounds a more saner representative of those he has chosen to represent —
But some more innoncent questions to him–
Why does his compatriots (or those he represents) only talk of human rights or minority rights only when in a minority, what happens when they are in a majority !?
And let’s not even try spin, statistics and facts prove the pattern.

Why do the refugees fleeing Syria go westwards. If the brotherhood is so sincere and they are so genuine about maintaining their cultural identity, wouldn’t it be more suitable moving to the Middle East, Iran or your homeland?

As regards aamirsfans apology & clarifications, yes he HAD to clarify not to me but given the climate he better clarifies and be careful in general, lest give FBI some food 4 thought!!

    As for satyamullah–
The VERY fact that u still NEED to hide behind moderation BEFORE they get posted, proves my point …

The day u gather the guts to debate with me one to one withiut having to hide behind moderation, u will grow up
Till then–go get anyone , infact any army of your fanboys and fangirls and they won’t be enough
And u know this firsthand and hence still don’t have the courage to face me without moderation layer 🙂

  14. Hate Story 3 Does Well On Day One
    Saturday 05 December 2015 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Hate Story 3 did well on day one as it grossed around 7.75 crore nett though the collections did falter a little after the early shows at places where it had taken a strong opening. This will probably mean a drop on Saturday but still due to the start it should get a healthy weekend of over 20 crore nett. The film scored well in places like UP, CP Berar, CI and Nizam.

The drop in certain areas suggests that the film is probably going to have to depend on what it can do in the first week despite little competition next week. The issue with this genre is that most of the recovery has to come from India theatrical so it can’t afford collections to drop too much after the first day.

Ragini MMS 2 released last year was of a similar genre also managed a similar opening day to Hate Story 3 and then went on to do 46 crore nett business and that is probably the target of Hate Story 3.

Tamasha grossed 1.50-1.75 crore nett on its eighth day which takes its business to around 54.50 crore nett plus. The business on day eight was limited to the metros and big multiplexes. Hate Story 3 opened well but did not effect Tamasha that much as in the theatres where Tamasha has its best collections, Hate Story 3 was poor.

There should be good gains on Saturday and Sunday with the weekend going to around 6 crore nett but that is a low second weekend. The film is probably heading for a 65 crore nett final total which is a little less than what the last Ranbir Kapoor / Imtiaz Ali film Rockstar got.

Rockstar had grossed around 68 crore nett in 2011 and even that film had a so so result at the box office. Barring Mysore the film has done poor all over and even Mysore could have been better as this type of film has potential for that circuit.

  15. But, as the city struggled to recover from the shock of 18 critically ill patients dying at the MIOT hospital dying after a power disruption and generators failing on Thursday and Friday, there was more bad news. The bodies of a retired Army officer and his wife besides five others were pulled out from their homes in Nandambakkam close to the MIOT hospital by fire and Army rescue personnel on Friday. Officials said all the seven might have been sleeping when the gushing waters of the Adyar River nearby barrelled into their homes, trapping them. Residents say 50,000 cusecs of water was let out without any warning on Tuesday night.

The situation in other hospitals too remained precarious due to the erratic power supply and thin attendance of medical staff.

As messages flew thick and fast on social media about the state government’s unpreparedness in handling the disaster, despite several warnings, there were statements by political parties of a state minister being chased away by irate rain-affected families from chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s R K Nagar constituency in north Chennai. Social media posts also lashed out at her partymen for intimidating activists and NGOs into using her stickers on the relief material they brought into the city.

After being battered by rain for three continuous days, power lines continued to be down in flooded areasand supply remained erratic in drier localities. Mobile and landline connectivity remained abysmal. Many supermarkets remained closed as panic set in about shops running out of food items and other essentials like milk and vegetables.

National Disaster Response Force director General O P Singh on Saturday said the force did not require more personnel than what had been deployed already, but would get more men if the state government requested so. “They are sufficient right now,” he told TOI, during his visit to Kotturpuram slum tenements, severely affected by the floods.

  19. ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES: MORE FUNNY THAN ANGRY ACTUALLY.

Frieda Da Silva ( Sarah-Jane Dias) invites her six of her close college friends to her sprawling old bungalow in Goa. Only on reaching her place do they realize that they have been invited to her wedding. They are Suranjana (Sandhya Mridul), a corporate boss who kicks some serous ass in her dealings with people and she comes with her six year old daughter, Pammi (Pavleen Gujral), a Delhi housewife who is treated like a commodity by her husband and his family; Mad (Anushka Manchanda), a pop singer who has sung a few Bollywood numbers but her original creations have no takers among recording companies, she has tried to cut her wrist twice and has a caring boyfriend who lands up in Goa when he doesn’t hear from her for two days and ‘jo bahut avhha bjata hai ..guitar bhi aur mujhe bhi’ as per Mad ; and half-Brit-half Indian wannabe actress Joanna (Amrit Maghera), who is trying to make it in Bollywood starting out with seedy B-movies; and there is Nargis Nasreen ( Tannishtha Chatterjee) who has led an agitation against one of Suranjana’s pet manufacturing projects. There is also Laxmi the amid who has been fighting her demos, which is actually a protracted court case involving her brothers murder. We learn the snatches of all these details in the course of a truly wild and uninhibited ride these ladies give us as they go about painting the town red. The gags are truly hilarious and it’s refreshing to see the girls let themselves go in spite of the censors blipping out all the dirty words. There is a scene where we see Suranjana atop a tree talking on the phone because the connectivity is bad everywhere else. There is another, where the ladies enter a gents toilet on the beach after swim and get their legs all wet trying to use the urinals.

I am not entirely happy with the violent turn the film takes and the vigilante-justice end, even though it bats fir women’s empowerment. But I like the other twist that comes a little after the interval. (It’s a SPOILER, but I am giving it away anyway. Please don’t read any further if you do not like crucial plot points revealed before seeing a film.) Well, the surprise groom that Frieda is going to marry turns out to be a woman, none other than Nargis. This really perks up the proceedings and the way the friends react to this leads to some outrageous gags as well as touching moments of camaraderie. Pammy talks of Article 370. One of the friends corrects her…that is about Kashmir, you probably mean Article 377. Yes, yes. So I hope you won’t end up in jail or something. Oh, we will make love in jail. Someone else adds, Artcle 377..it’s about unnatural sex. You know even between men and women. You know like oral sex. So we may all end up in jail. Pammy: Not me. I don’t allow all that . All: Don’t tell lies. Soon they are all understanding and tender towards the couple. Then Pammy stats again, “But tum log karte kaise ho?” Frieda ( in mock anger): Okay. Let me show you.

It might sound like mildly titillating. But is not. It is more about letting us into these women’s world and empathizing with them.

It’s that kind of a film. And an interesting departure for Pan Nalin after ‘ Samsara”

    Saturday – 7,00,00,000 apprx

  22. Universal’s Krampus had a wonderful opening as the Christmas-themed horror comedy managed a second place finish, just behind The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which took first place for a third weekend in a row. Creed held strong as it finds itself in a neck-and-neck battle for third place with Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, which is really struggling to find a foothold, becoming only the second Pixar film to drop more than 60% in its second weekend.

Mockingjay 2 took #1 with an estimated $18.6 million domestically along with another $32.4 million internationally. The film’s international cume now sits at $296.8 million, which tops the first Hunger Games as its global cume climbs above $523 million.

In second is where I must own my wildly inaccurate projection for Krampus, which stormed the box office to the tune of $16 million. The film nearly beat my $6.5 million weekend prediction on its very first day and held on very well on Saturday. After director and co-writer Michael Dougherty saw his last film, Trick ‘r Treat, sent straight to video despite support from a variety of online outlets, it would seem he’s proven he has what audiences are craving when it comes to holiday-themed horror features. It will be interesting to see how Krampus plays over the coming weeks, but with a reported budget of only $15 million it’s already well on its way to becoming a low budget success.

Another win for the weekend is the Warner Bros. and MGM co-production Creed, which dropped just a bit more than my predicted 38%. With an estimated $15.5 million it currently sits in third place, edging out Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur. The film has nearly doubled its reported $35 million budget as it has now crossed $65 million in its first twelve days and word is director Ryan Coogler is now in talks to direct Marvel’s Black Panther, a gig he shied away from previously, but has now had a change of heart.

In fourth we find The Good Dinosaur, which dropped 60.4% for an estimated $15.5 million. If estimates hold it will be the largest second weekend drop for a Pixar film ever, on the wrong side of the 60.3% drop Cars 2 had back in 2011. Difference is, after two weekends Cars 2 had already racked up $117.2 million while Good Dinosaur currently sits at just $75.9 million, and that’s including two extra days thanks to its Wednesday release.

Rounding out the top five is Spectre, which is now above $184 million domestically and $792 million internationally after adding another $23 million overseas this weekend.

Looking at the week’s other new releases, Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq finished just outside the top twelve with an estimated $1.25 million from 305 theaters. The film’s opening is Lee’s best opening in some time, besting the $885k opening of Oldboy back in 2013 while opening in 278 fewer theaters.

Things are not so hunky-dory between real-life wrestling champ Sangram Singh and the celluloid wrestler Aamir Khan. Apparently, Aamir wanted Sangram to play the role of his main opponent in the ring in Dangal so that the fight in the grand finale looks real.

There was only one hitch. Sangram’s character had to lose the competition with Aamir. This, Sangram, an Olympian wrestling champ, refused to do.

Explains Sangram, “I have the highest regard for Aamirji, and when he asked me to be part of Dangal, I was most happy. Unfortunately, I had to lose the match with Aamirji. This I couldn’t do.”

    Ego and pride?

Protests Sangram, “Nahin, ego aur pride ki baat nahin. It is to do with preserving the dignity of the respect and love that my country has given me. Just for the pleasure of being seen on screen with Aamirji, I can’t play a loser. It will disappoint my supporters.”

    Excerpts

Today, Rajeswari and her family are at the Indira Nagar station of the Mass Rapid Transit System, the elevated local railway line operated by Southern Railways. Their possessions: the clothes on them, plus the sheet they sleep on, part of a banner that once advertised the Kaizen 4M checklist for manufacturing industries: “Men, Machines, Material, Method.” Since the rains began around Deepavali, Rajeswari’s house has been water-logged. The first bout of rains left the family ankle-deep in water. In the next spell, the water rose to the knees. But they could still sit on the three beds at home. Then, Monday happened. 119.73 centimeters of rain, breaking a 100-year-old record – and all hell broke loose.

The water kept rising. The sons created an island by putting one bed on top of another, and when the water still kept rising, the third bed was put on top.

Hate Story 3 did good weekend business thanks to business in UP, CP Berar, CI, Nizam and Maharashtra (outside Mumbai city and Pune). The best day was the first day but this can happen with this genre especially when it opens well. The daily first weekend business of Hate Story 3 is as follows.

    Friday – 8,25,00,000
    Saturday – 6,75,00,000
    Sunday – 7,50,00,000

    Total – 22,50,00,000

Although the film will find it hard to sustain even in its best circuits, the weekend business is enough to pull it through. Hate Story grossed 12 crore nett and Hate Story 2 grossed 23 crore nett and Hate Story 3 is similar to Hate Story 2 in three days. The costs have also gone up but Hate Story 3 should emerge the biggest success in this franchise so far.

Tamasha had a big fall in collections in week two as it grossed around 6.50 crore nett. The drop is 83% from the first weekend. The ten day business is 59.50 crore nett. The daily second weekend business of Tamasha is as follows.

      Friday – 1,50,00,000
      Saturday – 2,25,00,000
      Sunday – 2,75,00,000

The film will probably edge past the 65 crore nett mark but will not even reach the business of Rockstar which grossed 68.50 crore nett in 2011.

The business in the second weekend has come mainly from premium multiplexes where it was actually collecting better than Hate Story 3 on Saturday and Sunday but a film like this can’t survive on those theatres alone.

I think even a ‘slightly’ decent ( coherent ) movie by any of these 3 will yield 300 cr in today’s market. Even if 60% of the jokes work, Dilwale will end up scoring huge due to prolonged holidays. A Golmal 3 kind of movie is easily crossing 300 cr for them.

“Star system important, but so is performance: SRK”

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan says the Hindi film industry may be driven by the star system, but the audience now chooses its ‘stars’ based on their performance.

Asked how important is the star system in Bollywood, Shah Rukh said here: “If in IPL (Indian Premier League), we don’t have stars, nobody will watch it. So, you have to have stars for people to choose films.

“(Cricketer Mahendra Singh) Dhoni is a star, but, if he doesn’t perform well for three times, everyone starts abusing him. So, performance is very important. I think star system is important, or else by this time, our films would have come to an end.”

  31. Jagga Jasoos is like Indiana Jones or Tintin – Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor may not have had a good phase professionally, but his latest film Tamasha has put things on right track. He is winning rave reviews for his performance in the movie. And the actor instead of basking in the glory of it, is back to work. He is currently shooting Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and jagga Jasoos both of which release next year.

While ADHM is very much on track, Jagga Jasoos has been in the making for two years. In a chat with DNA, when Ranbir was asked about the film’s delay he said, “It’s one film I’ve grown old with.”

Probe him about the film and Kapoor explains, “With Jagga Jasoos, Anurag Basu is trying to bring in a new genre of films to Bollywood. And it’s very interesting for me as an actor to play a young detective who stammers and is on his way to find his stepfather. It’s on the landscape of an adventure film like Indiana Jones or Tintin.”

Reports suggest, that the film has 15 songs. “My character stammers throughout the film. The only time he doesn’t stammer is when he sings. So it has been a really challenging role for me. There are more than 15 songs in the film. It’s a musical so each scene is a song,” reveals the Tamasha actor.

Though the movie hasn’t released yet, rumours of Anurag Basu planning to make a series of the film is going on for quite sometime now. Quiz RK and he tells DNA, “Yes, definitely the endeavour is to make it into a series. But for that, the first film needs to be successful. As of now, we are releasing Jagga Jasoos sometime in June 2016.”

        • Lol, why would I hate Tintin? I was among the only 2-3 folks on Friday evening watching on big screen. Also, FYI – Tintin is huge flop in US and did only 77 million total collections when its budget itself is 135 million, you are talking about Wordwide collections. But still its not good business, as like US it just opened good and collapsed everywhere and that made it 300 million. But when you have Peter Jackson and Spielberg coming together 300 million is nothing. No wonder the sequel to be directed by Peter Jackson was supposed to be launched in 1 year is nowehre to be seen still.

          Like

        • Thats because peter jackson got occupied with the hobbit trilogy which later drained him of the interest of making another big budget movie …so he is now dabbling into some smaller ventures, but tintin still very much remains on the agenda…just read some of his interviews on the sequel. Yes it bombed big time in US, but then again US reader were always passive to the character , so thats not surprising. The movie was suppose to do good money in europe & some asian countries which it did, infact tintin was the highest grossing animated movie in india (i dont know the record still holds or not) Incidentally US got the movie almost 2 months after it got its offshore screenings which itself is self explanatory for whom the makers were aiming for . Secondly Tintin’s popularity was at its peak in 70’s, 80’s & 90’s (in india ) , by the time it made the jump from the comic book pages to the silver screen the steam had died down a lot . So, i guess they were late to the party & it was kinda a missed opportunity in that sense. But it was not a theatrical flop by any sense going by sheer business economics , as it made decent profit …by that def every marvel phase 1 movies were flops except iron man & avengers.
They also choose a rather insipid stories to fire up the franchise (crab with gloden claws, secret of the unicorn & 2 pages of red rackham’s treasure) which later thanks to a rather peculiar mashup became a tedious convoluted story . I would have rather started with blue lotus & black island or hell even tintin in america would had the US audiences interested. Hopefully Jackson can bring a new perspective with his brand of storytelling.

  32. Chennai: The floods in Tamil Nadu were of “epic proportions” and he had reached out on behalf of the less fortunate on Twitter as he had “freaked out” after losing his home “for the first time in life,” actor Siddharth told NDTV in an interview today.

“I freaked out that I had lost my house for the first time… three studios, three cars… And then I felt bad for the middle class who lost so much in just one day,” said the actor, who said he has not been home in the last six days. The water in his home, he said, is just being drained out and the power was back only last evening.

The silver lining was that this was the first time when during a natural calamity, there has been “more volunteers than victims”, owing to the tremendous response generated by the social media – a trend seen since the floods in Jammu and Kashmir last year.

  33. Over 15 songs for Jagga Jasoos and he is comparing it with Indiana Jones??

This is not really good news for the film. Songs at every few minutes tend to slow down the narrative and after a while the audience becomes restless and simply wants things to move.

I remember some friends who are SRK fans went to watch Oh Darling Yeh Hai India and they came out of the theatre after an hour, completely fed up with the songs. Times have changed but this remains very risky.

In recent years, it is not only the number of films produced that have seen a rise. Many of these films are being appreciated for their original plots and nuanced interpretations.

The latest film in this list has both an unusual lead actor and a ‘hatke’ storyline.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, starring singer-composer Shankar Mahadeven in the lead role, is revelling in both commercial and critical success.

It is through this prism that Sumedha Raikar-Mhatre examines the state of the Marathi film industry, which annually produces around 190 dissimilar films requiring an investment of Rs 400 crores.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: What Donald Trump and ISIS Have in Common

“The terrorist campaign against American ideals is winning. Fear is rampant. Gun sales are soaring. Hate crimes are increasing. Bearded hipsters are being mistaken for Muslims. And 83 percent of voters believe a large-scale terrorist attack is likely here in the near future. Some Americans are now so afraid that they are willing to trade in the sacred beliefs that define America for some vague promises of security from the very people who are spreading the terror. “Go ahead and burn the Constitution — just don’t hurt me at the mall.” That’s how effective this terrorism is.

I’m not talking about ISIS. I’m talking about Donald Trump.”

  45. In hindsight, i’m happy that Aamir spoke his mind and stuck to his guns as his remarks, at the very least, unmasked the “Progressive and Sincere” Indians hypocrisy!! Before this incident i used to think that at least Aamir’s sincerity and patriotism can never ever be questioned, but this single statement shattered all my beliefs in this as people began questioning “his credentials and reminding him about his religion”!! And this to a man who has always stood for the country and for its people, just for expressing his views however wrong they might seem to anyone, but “Go to Pakistan, Traitor and what not” kind of labels can never ever justify their reservations about his remarks!
I am guilty of misinterpreting Aamir’s remarks in isolation and out of context as well with out listening to the entire video where he talked on other issues at great length, but “OUR RESPONSIBLE MEDIA” pounced upon this opportunity and milked it to up their TRPs with out bothering to comprehend what he meant and just picked up certain parts of the video to aggrandise its impact!!
I think in Aamir’s case our comprehension skills went for a toss as he nowhere said that he was leaving India but he said it was a disastrous statement for Kiran to make to me, yet headline was as if Aamir supported his wife’s idea and almost left the country which was fartherest from the truth. And see the extreme reactions from BJP as if he committed a sin and leveled all kind of accusations from being traitor to being tuitioned by opposition to spread fear!! As long as one is supporting its ideology and policies, one is a “Nationalist”, but the moment one points at any flaw, one is “Rashtradrohi & Pakistani (in case one is Muslim). And look at Anupam Kher, who kept contradicting his own thoughts as once he took pride in the democracy that is India and on the very next accuses Aamir of speaking on every issue be it AIB or intolerance!! And this coming from a man whose wife is a BJP MP and who has been singing paeans of Modi for the last 18 months and then he would like to believe that Aamir is a dear friend, and on top of that bringing the 25 years ago conversation during the shooting of DHKMN amongst him, Mahesh Bhatt and Aamir shows his childish attitude, which serves no purpose in current scenario.

As long as Aamir keeps playing the ” ACP Rathore, Mangal Pandey, DJ, Nikumbh Sir, Rancho, Bhuvan” or hosting “SMJ”, he is patriot and Indian, but the moment he errs in his judgement, his religion is being invoked to show India’s tolerance and brotherhood!! He is made to believe as if he is an outsider and owes every thing to Hindus be it his skill or his success!! This very statement made very clear the chasm that still exists between Hindus and Muslims, the mistrust, the misgiving people of majority have towards Muslims and the hardliners and extremists from both communities would keep it alive just to pander to their own vote banks!!

Shah Rukh Khan has once again proven that he is the country’s top celebrity, leaving behind all his contemporaries. Khan is back at No.1 in the 2015 Forbes India Celebrity 100 list. At 50, SRK continues to rule India’s most definitive celebrity index.
Having slipped to No.3 last year, he has wrested the coveted No 1 position on the list back from Salman Khan, who has dropped to the No. 2 slot this year.
Amitabh Bachchan slips to No.3 (from No.2 last year) while cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni maintains his rank at No 4.
Shah Rukh Khan. PTIShah Rukh Khan. PTI
Shah Rukh Khan’s earnings are estimated at Rs 257.5 crore, the highest ever any celebrity has made in the four-year history of the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list. In fact, his earnings make up as much as 9 percent of the total wealth of the top 100 celebrities this year — Rs 2,819 crore.
While the Forbes India Rich List focuses on net worth, the Celebrity 100 list is arrived at by measuring money (earnings estimates) and fame. The list includes movie actors, television stars, sportspersons, authors, film directors, music directors, singers and stand-up comedians. Their gross pre-tax earnings are combined with their fame scores to arrive at the Forbes India Celebrity 100 List.
On the Fame rankings, Shah Rukh Khan still lags behind at No 4. Here, Amitabh Bachchan reigns at No 1. With more than 18 million followers on Twitter, the highest-ever for any celebrity on our list, the 73-year-old icon is setting higher benchmarks every day.
The list this year has thrown up a few surprises. Notable among them is actor Aamir Khan, who makes it to the top five for the first time. He is at Number 5 on the list this year. The superhit movie PK and revenues from brand endorsements helped him rake in an estimated Rs 104.25 crore, his highest in the last four years. It’s an increase of 145 percent to the amount he earned in 2012.

    • What am about to say Satyam & Co will think its my excuse for less collections for Dilwale. Lol but let me say it.

I read on news recently that during Salman’s weekend episodes, the movies are getting affected and lot of mass audience is preferring to watch Bigg Boss with Salman Khan and collections are impacted. (I think it will be very minimal %). So it is really strange that SRK is promoting Dilwale on BB on 19th and 20th nights. So, does he want folks to checkout your BB episode and skip the movie at that time? Lol. Usually movie promotions are done prior to the release week but SRK is doing both BB and Comedy Nights with Kapil after release weekend. (19 and 20th Dec). Kinda strange!

      • To add.. If regular weekends can have little impact for movie shows then I think SRK and Salman episode will have huge TRP for TV and its a boon for TV audience to watch them for free at home!
