Hate Story 3 Has Good First Week Despite Weekday Drop

Hate Story 3 had a good first week of 34 crore nett despite collections dropping on the weekdays. The film has done well in UP, Maharashtra, CP Berar, CI and Nizam but even these areas found it hard to hold in the weekdays. In fact the areas where opening was not so strong were holding a bit better. CP Berar grossed 2.50 crore nett in week one which is a very good total.
The weekend was similar to last years hit Ragini MMS 2 which was a similar genre but the week ended lower as that film had grossed 37 crore nett in its first week as it held better.
The film should be able to cross the 40 crore nett mark but that will depend on what happens on day eight as there will be a big drop due to dropping weekday collections but no competition from new releases there should be some respectable collections.
Tamasha Second Week Business

Tamasha dropped in week two with collections around 10.50 crore nett. the drop is 80% apprx. The film only really collected in Mumbai, Delhi / UP, East Punjab and Mysore in the second week. The business of Tamasha till date is as follows.
Week One – 52,93,00,000
Week Two – 10,50,00,000 apprx
Total – 63,43,00,000 apprx
In Mysore it will become the fifth highest grossing film of the year after Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Piku – Motion Se Hi Emotion but that is only circuit where the business is decent. The film will add another 2-3 crore nett for lifetime business of 66 crore nett apprx..
No wonder Imtiaz Ali calls him a ‘Bada Jaanwar’ for charging so much. Since there is no box-office pull, he should be slotted with Irfan Khan and Nawaz etc for ‘magnificent’ acting
“Ranbir Kapoor paid Rs 38 crore for Tamasha”
It was earlier also reported that Ranbir had charged Rs 30 crores for Bombay Velvet which made just about Rs 24 crore at the domestic box office. Yeah, we guess he got paid more than what the film made. Also, Hrithik Roshan, who has been in the industry a decade more than Ranbir, got Rs 50 crores for Bang Bang. Many other actors including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Ranveer Singh have worked on commission or profit-sharing basis and RK has also implemented that in a few films. Looks like the Kapoor lad is on the right track maybe and he proves that if you have talent, you will be paid well and a few box office failures won’t affect anything.

Saw Room today – it is very touching story about a mother and her child coming out of a horrific lifespan and their struggle.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” – 7.5/10
I think everyone has seen it already. It is top-notch movie, but i don’t like such ruthless fantasy cinema.
Still a great creative achievement.
“Spotlight”- 7/10
Bold and disturbing subject, but it stretches to unnecessary length though very realistic portrayal.
“The Martian”- 7/10
I was little surprised with the kind of praise this movie received, i find it pretentious in parts. I will take Interstellar anyday over it.
“Spy”- 8/10
This is probably most entertaining movie of the year, it attempts every trick of comedy genre and it works in every scene with great humor and never loses human touch.
“Trainwreck” – 7/10
I was kinda offended with the kind of mean and vulgar it is with full of foul language and in some scenes such foul langugage looked repetitive and didnt work for me. It is cult movie, with a special section of audience going gaga over it. And i think that is because it brings a new dimension to comedy genre.
Special mention-
Brooklyn – 7.5/10
Sweet and heart touching story with beautiful cinematography. But, i wont revisit it again for the kind of heavy emotion it induces.
Steve Jobs – 7/10
It bored me to a lot extent and it was all talk, talk and talk with a lot of depth analysis to show character of steve jobs. Great performances indeed and strong narration but what it was lacking is some eventful scenes.
Grandma- 6.5/10
Some very bold notorious scenes with mix of social issues. But, humor will work for a special section of audience especially old age group.
Bridge of Spies – 5/10
Interesting and umpteen times attempted subject with boredom due to extremely slow pace and lazy narration. How can someone kill a strong story with slow pace, this sets an example. I remember Tinker tailor soldier spy was even much slower than this, but screenplay and performances and all the setup along with bgm worked big time. It is not close in any department.
“Anomalisa” –
Saw its trailer today on big screen, and it looks like must watch. It gives feel of short movies which gets nominated in academy award. Animation is unique and non-regular for a full length animation movie, but it seems to have worked to give insight into character’s and their lives. I will catch it as soon as it is out in nearby theater.
“The Good Dinosaur” – 6.5/10
It is a regular feel good animation movie with excellent animation , but main character ‘the green dinasour’ animation design is big turn off, it mars the movie.
“Inside Out” – 7/10
Sometimes overall theater experience dont let you enjoy movie completely, as i was 10 mins late into movie, i didnt enjoy it as much as i should have. Good concept with lot of enjoyable moments, though i dont thing it is as innovative as people praise have been sofar. I found it little overrated.
“Shaun the Sheep Movie”- 8.5/10
When i mentioned Spy as most entertaining this movie slipped from my mind. This is most entertaining family fun. I took a back seat in First few minutes after realizing it has no dialogues. But, once i got the characters, it is unstoppable. It is silent movie with full grasp of you into characters. It is a laugh ride with events created with innovative mechanism. It will remind you how you enjoyed your first TV cartoon.
Neva heard of this but was ‘forced’ ( sometimes uve 2 “sit with some interestin person rather than the movie”, u know) Movies like this are predictable, cliche, even unremarkable, plus they are SMALL in budget & canvas.
‘small’ is the keyword here–some wrongly feel I have a penchant for BIG stuff.
(I think) this is about an (ex) award-winning screenwriter who loses his touch & isn’t able to piece together a coherent script. His pitches are rejected (esp after giving a few box office duds!) by producers wanting ” an edgy comedy with kickass women”! He has to swallow his pride just to survive and take up a teaching job in a non-descript town. He wastes no time in annoying the Jane-Austen loving influential ethical lead there. And selects his class NOT by going thru their scripts but ONLY by looking at their online photos –female hotties get in & a few male dweebs. (Obviously he bones a hot female student in no time).
BTW There’s nothing like a ‘spoiler’ here… Somehow it reminded me of another Bollywood modern ‘cult classic’ (& equally DISASTROUS on the box office called ‘Happy Ending’ starring Saif Ali Khan)..
& this maybe just an excuse for posting this admiration piece for Ileana Dacruz!
But it kept me awake & just about interested to nearly complete it. I’ve always found Hugh Grant an interestin actor and the ‘romcom’ tag did no justice to him. He’s run down and somewhat decrepit here, has lost most of his charm but there’s some residual charisma, his half-wit, self deprecating self semi intact. One can still locate the guy from Notting Hill, Four weddings and a funeral, Love actually etc.
JK Simmons (of ‘whiplash’ fame) as the dean is reliably effective in a low key role. Bella Heathcote is eminently immature and flirtatious (the perfect mix). Marisa Townei has a certain MILF-ey appeal but their entanglement wasn’t explored properly besides many other aspects.
The scene wherein Hugh lets his ‘student’ enjoy his success was subtlety effective (& my fave scene) & it was enjoyable to see him ‘step back’. The director somehow manages to give the characters some layers, nuance and feeling.
There’s a well concealed misogyny angle here (besides some other problems). It’s ‘well concealed’ only bcos the usual misogyny watchdogs (or watchbitches!) won’t detect it. But when u have the only one or two dweebs writing better scripts than all the gals it’s significant.
Also the ‘Jane Austen’ loving woman is now becoming a cliche–a single LONELY ( & sexually deprived) woman in the need of company (& maybe more!).
In the current landscape only high concept plotting and ‘franchise worthy’ material finds backers and audience, relegating such films onto direct to DVD release. But again who cares a damn? The material finds its (worthy) audience & critic ..so what of its a ‘chick flick’ (or a skin flick or whateva..).
Most of Grants jokes don’t hit the mark now, infact many of them are now non-jokes or even faux-humour but what makes it interesting to me is how he feels he’s pulled it off (just by turning up).. So typical of some1…
Hugh gets an ace tagline though (that I’ve also professed)

You’ve never concealed your admiration for Dilip Kumar. What makes him a role model for you and generations of other actors?
I have admired his performances, for to me, they have remained beyond any fault. I have admired his intellect, and the way he has translated that into his work. And I have admired his clarity of speech in whichever language he speaks. Clarity in speech is to me the greatest acumen for an actor. You cannot have clarity of speech without the understanding of its graph and tenor. You cannot be a great actor without the benefit of these two elements in your expression – graph and tenor!
love it! he is totally correct on speaking with clarity. It is not taken seriously these days. These two had different styles when preparing for a role…but both excelled in front of the screen.
I grew up a ‘die-hard’ Bachchan fan and it was through Bachchan I became a fan of DK also…before I watched Shakti I didn’t know how powerful an actor DK was. My dad was a DK fan but I just didn’t get the hype…I do now.

There is no intolerance in India : Adnan Sami Khan
After Indian superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan shared their thoughts about the growing intolerance in India, renowned singer turned music composer, Adnan Sami, who was recently granted citizenship in India has spoken about the controversial topic.
“If there was intolerance in the country, would I have asked for citizenship in the country? I believe actions speak louder than words,” said Pakistan-born Sami.
Last seen in the song Bhar Do Jholi from Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, speaking about the love he got from the people in India, he said:
“When my first album came out, it wasn’t Bollywood. The love that I received from people was everything and it still is everything for me. After 16 years, it is not just the land where I work, but also my home and my love.”
Boycotting his films? His films already achieved thundering boxoffice successes. None can take it away from him. Dangal is far away and its failure wont make much difference as it will be attributed to extraneous factors. Sometimes I feel his rival actors maybe fuelling the fire.
This entire hatred is really terrible. Either Aamir Khan or his detractors should approach Supreme Court and then we will hear the final verdict in clear terms.

Srk, Kajol, Varun, Kriti. Directed by Rohit. A film about brothers, love, action, & lots of fun. Has all the elements of a huge grosser.
Watched Comedy Nights Bachao with SRK and team and what a fun episode and the cast just oozes charm and impressed with Varun again.
Nothing to beat SRK when he is not in movies these days…..a very rare ability to say all the right things at the right time apart from being charming and possessing all the people skills.
I remember clearly when Comedy Nights with Kapil had just started and was doing okay when suddenly SRK with his team landed on the show for Chennai Express promotion and it got the required visibility/ respectability and the show took off to another level thereon. It has been doing the same for Comedy Nights Bachao since this weekend as per common consensus this was one of the best episode recorded with all the witty / fun dance moments…..and yes Bharti Singh is actually very talented apart from being hilarious.
Was very good. It was well scripted and had funny dialogues. Best part is SRK and his team has no problem with joke being on themselves.
That Shaqueel guy is funny. His face and voice goes with his humor.
This promotion business may take more out of you than the actual shooting of the film. You have to have strong stemina and will to be on promotion blitz straight for 3 weeks. Travelling all over, going to different shows, cities, etc…
On that note looking forward to Bigg Boss 9 episode on ‘unees bees’ December where another TV stalwart is the reason to watch that show with amazing timings.
Further to that SRK comment where he said star system is important, or films / sports etc would come to an end…..its becoming increasing necessary for movies to rely on these big stars with something more than straight ‘acting’ and I am inclined to think stepping out to a theatre nearby and watching movies will slowly turn out to be only for these so called ‘events’ movies and ‘star’ spectacle.
Those looking for serious cinema and story telling will have to rely on TV where the elongated storytelling opportunities afforded by television trump cinema’s frayed reliance on the drudgery of 130 minute three-act plots.
It always has been. Only thing is in 40s thru mid 80s, Film was the only source of entertainment for most and only way to see it was in theatre so even your sub par movie would end up making money because audience had no choice but to see it in a theatre.
Now, the movie is out on net same day, and on DVD.
The small movie has to be really special now for the audience to go see it. And the audience does spend money on good small movies.
The issue Bollywood really has right now is these 3 khans has touched 50, and they’re the ones still at top. The new generation hasn’t stepped up yet outside of brief sparks here and there.
I think Ranbir, Varun and Ranveer will have to take over at some point (after couple years).
Agree to the first part of your comment. Now with new releases coming to TV sooner than later (Shandaar premiered on TV this weekend), its going to get increasingly difficult for regulars to survive at the cinema if the audience loyalty is not built as audience can easily wait for a month for these small timers.
On the 3 Khan bit, you need to add Akki and Ajay to the mix for sheer hard work and willingness to work with the audience. If you notice all of them have changed gears (reinvented ) at least 2-3 times in their career. That kind of commitment is missing and except Varun who is increasing his reach day by day , rest of the younger lot stuck with multiplex kind.
Just wait and watch like Tamasha, Bajirao M will also be just a weekend deal since Ranveer has not done anything to cross over. DDD was a 100 cr movie at the very least with that kind of look, music and promo…..
What I meant is – those looking for serious and edgier stories.
TV shows can be free-form and the ideas don’t have constraints as films are getting more expensive and there is a need to be marketed properly and tend to simplify to sell.

Cost of making – 100 crore
Cost of Print & Advertising – 20 crore
Total cost – 120 crore
Satellite rights – 50 crore
Music and other ancillary rights (home video, in flight entertainment etc.) + Overseas (expected) – 70 crore
Total recovery *without India theatrical* – 120 crore
From this point on, whatever collections come from India theatrical would add on to the profits for the film.
This isn’t all as the film would also have a huge international release in the long run (starting with the huge China release in 2016) that would further continue to bring in revenue.
Given the economics of the film, expectations that one has from it and the hype that the makers [Eros, Bhansali] have managed to create so far, Bajirao Mastani is well on its way to be a good commercial success. Now one waits to see how much entertaining does it truly turn out to be, once audiences begin to step in on 18th December.
The descendants of Peshwa and Chhatrasal dynasty had organized a protest at Shaniwar Wada on December 12 against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film ‘Bajirao Mastani’ which is scheduled to release on December 18, 2015. According to reports, the protesters had gathered at Shaniwar Wada, the ancestral capital of the Peshwa to condemn the promotional videos and songs of the movie. The protest was led by Undaysinh Peshwa, who was joined by Kothrud’s BJP MLA Medha Kulkarni, descendant of Chhatrasal. On the occasion, the protesters burnt an effigy of Bhansali and shouted slogans against the movie.
Recently, a petition was filed in a Pune court seeking a ban on the film, alleging that it has distorted history relating to late king Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa and his family members. “When Bundelkhand was attacked by Muhammad Shah Bangash, Chhatrasal Bundela, who was 80-year-old at the time of the attack, asked Bajirao Peshwa to intervene. Bajirao defeated Bangash, and was offered Mastani’s hand by Bundela, her father. She came in Bajirao’s life in 1722 and died in 1740. However, Bhansali has twisted the facts and it is not acceptable to us as it hurts our sentiments”, clarified the protestors alleging Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
“The trailer and promotional videos of the movie prove that it is an attempt to distort the historical figures of Maharashtra and Bundelkhand. We are requesting the concerned people to remove these trailers and the objectionable content from the movie, which is not according to the history,” claimed the protestors.
Last month, Mohini Karkarey, who is a descendant of the Peshwa, wrote an open letter to director Bhansali after ‘Pinga’ was launched. In the letter, she claimed that Kashibai couldn’t dance as she was suffering from arthritis. Karkarey has also claimed that Mastani was not a courtesan, but the daughter of Raja Chatrasaal of Bundelkhand.
Time and again, the entire cast has emphasized on the fact that there is a difference between the film being inspired from history and based on history. It will be interesting to see how the Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone-Priyanka Chopra starrer fares at the box office.
It was the first disappointment for Sallu’s ‘Hero’, Sooraj Pancholi, and ‘heroine’ Athiya Shetty, who came all dressed up for the ball, hoping to go back home with their shoes on and the Best Debutant trophies. But they were upstaged by Akshara Haasan, who was introduced by R Balki in Shamitabh and Omkar Kapoor, the new boy in the Pyaar Ka Punchnama sequel. The duo smiled sportingly, lil’ Miss Shetty getting ‘cheeky’ with another style icon, Sonam Kapoor, who was under the weather but weathered the viral well.
Looks like Sooraj will not get many offers with the recent revival of the Jiah Khan case. Athiya was lucky to get debut movie but that might be her last movie as well.
Marathi courtroom drama “Court” is not the only Indian film with a regional flavour vying for a spot in the nominations for the 88th Academy Awards. Malayalam movie “Jalam”, Kannada film “Rangitaranga” and Konkani film “Nachom-ia Kumpasar” have also made it to the eligibility list.
Hindi film “Hemalkasa” has also made it to the final list of 305 movies, along with Indo-Australian movie “Salt Bridge”.
The compositions from “Jalam” and “Salt Bridge” are among the 74 songs contending for nominations in the Best Original Song category at the 88th Academy Awards.
“Bhoomiyilenghanumundo”, “Koodu vaykkan”, “Pakalppaathi chaari” and “Yaathra manoradhamerum” are songs from “Jalam” fighting for the spot in the category, as mentioned in the official website of the awards.
The film stars Priyanka Nair, Prakash Bare and is directed by M. Padmakumar.
As many as seven songs from “Salt Bridge”, which stars Rajeev Khandelwal and Usha Jadhav, have made it to the long list.
The songs are: “Aankhon me samaye dil”, “Bachpana thaa”, “Kanpne lage tum”, “Kyaa bataaun tujhe”, “Le jaaye jo door tumse”, “Na jaane kitni door” and “Sookha hi rang daalo”.
Chaitanya Tamhane’s debut Marathi movie “Court” is the India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category. The final awards nominations will be announced on January 14, 2016 and the ceremony is set to be held on February 28 at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

– This is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s BEST looking film. Every frame is filled with color, light, and the set decor and costumes are spectacular. The scene that stands out is Bajirao’s coronation scene where he sits on the throne for the first time. It will stay with you even after the film ends.
– The songs are a very important part of the storyline. Even though Pinga didn’t catch on and become a rage like Dola re Dola, it comes in the film at a very important junction and changes the flow of the storyline. Albela Sajan is the most beautifully shot song in the film.
– Apart from the main leads – Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, there are some noteworthy performances from Milind Soman, Mahesh Manjrekar and other actors who plays some important parts.
– The battle scenes have been choreographed on a GRAND scale and the visuals and CGI work is remarkable.
– Priyanka Chopra’s Kashibai act will go down as one of her best performances till date. Even though she doesn’t have as much screen time as Mastani, her character is extremely pivotal and important to the film. Akshay Kumar who is gearing up for the release of Airlift has decided to join the league of actors in order to work towards the development of the Chennai, Tamil Nadu after the city faced terrible losses due to floods recently. The actor has donated Rs. 1 crore to the relief fund of Chennai floods.
Director Priyadarshan who has worked with Akshay Kumar in films like Hera Pheri helped the actor for making the donation. Since Akshay was in a dilemma about how to go about the process of contributing to the relief funds, he decided to take the help of the filmmaker. Priyadarshan revealed that since it was a huge amount, he advised Akshay to donate it to the Bhoomika Trust, a charity fund run by actress Suhasini Ratnam, wife of filmmaker Mani Ratnam.
Priyadarshan also stated that Akshay Kumar wanted to keep this news private but the filmmaker decided to reveal it so that others are inspired by it. Many South celebrities like Rana Daggubati, Rang De Basanti fame Siddharth donated funds and even helped people personally in this traumatic situation.

Hate Story 3 Has Good First Week Despite Weekday Drop

Hate Story 3 had a good first week of 34 crore nett despite collections dropping on the weekdays. The film has done well in UP, Maharashtra, CP Berar, CI and Nizam but even these areas found it hard to hold in the weekdays. In fact the areas where opening was not so strong were holding a bit better. CP Berar grossed 2.50 crore nett in week one which is a very good total.
The weekend was similar to last years hit Ragini MMS 2 which was a similar genre but the week ended lower as that film had grossed 37 crore nett in its first week as it held better.
The film should be able to cross the 40 crore nett mark but that will depend on what happens on day eight as there will be a big drop due to dropping weekday collections but no competition from new releases there should be some respectable collections.

Total – 63,43,00,000 apprx
In Mysore it will become the fifth highest grossing film of the year after Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Piku – Motion Se Hi Emotion but that is only circuit where the business is decent. The film will add another 2-3 crore nett for lifetime business of 66 crore nett apprx..

No wonder Imtiaz Ali calls him a ‘Bada Jaanwar’ for charging so much. Since there is no box-office pull, he should be slotted with Irfan Khan and Nawaz etc for ‘magnificent’ acting
“Ranbir Kapoor paid Rs 38 crore for Tamasha”
It was earlier also reported that Ranbir had charged Rs 30 crores for Bombay Velvet which made just about Rs 24 crore at the domestic box office. Yeah, we guess he got paid more than what the film made. Also, Hrithik Roshan, who has been in the industry a decade more than Ranbir, got Rs 50 crores for Bang Bang. Many other actors including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Ranveer Singh have worked on commission or profit-sharing basis and RK has also implemented that in a few films. Looks like the Kapoor lad is on the right track maybe and he proves that if you have talent, you will be paid well and a few box office failures won’t affect anything.

Room – 8/10
Saw Room today – it is very touching story about a mother and her child coming out of a horrific lifespan and their struggle.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” – 7.5/10
I think everyone has seen it already. It is top-notch movie, but i don’t like such ruthless fantasy cinema.
Still a great creative achievement.
“Spotlight”- 7/10
Bold and disturbing subject, but it stretches to unnecessary length though very realistic portrayal.
“The Martian”- 7/10
I was little surprised with the kind of praise this movie received, i find it pretentious in parts. I will take Interstellar anyday over it.
“Spy”- 8/10
This is probably most entertaining movie of the year, it attempts every trick of comedy genre and it works in every scene with great humor and never loses human touch.
“Trainwreck” – 7/10
I was kinda offended with the kind of mean and vulgar it is with full of foul language and in some scenes such foul langugage looked repetitive and didnt work for me. It is cult movie, with a special section of audience going gaga over it. And i think that is because it brings a new dimension to comedy genre.
Special mention-
Brooklyn – 7.5/10
Sweet and heart touching story with beautiful cinematography. But, i wont revisit it again for the kind of heavy emotion it induces.
Steve Jobs – 7/10
It bored me to a lot extent and it was all talk, talk and talk with a lot of depth analysis to show character of steve jobs. Great performances indeed and strong narration but what it was lacking is some eventful scenes.
Grandma- 6.5/10
Some very bold notorious scenes with mix of social issues. But, humor will work for a special section of audience especially old age group.
Bridge of Spies – 5/10
Interesting and umpteen times attempted subject with boredom due to extremely slow pace and lazy narration. How can someone kill a strong story with slow pace, this sets an example. I remember Tinker tailor soldier spy was even much slower than this, but screenplay and performances and all the setup along with bgm worked big time. It is not close in any department.
“Anomalisa” –
Saw its trailer today on big screen, and it looks like must watch. It gives feel of short movies which gets nominated in academy award. Animation is unique and non-regular for a full length animation movie, but it seems to have worked to give insight into character’s and their lives. I will catch it as soon as it is out in nearby theater.
“The Good Dinosaur” – 6.5/10
It is a regular feel good animation movie with excellent animation , but main character ‘the green dinasour’ animation design is big turn off, it mars the movie.
“Inside Out” – 7/10
Sometimes overall theater experience dont let you enjoy movie completely, as i was 10 mins late into movie, i didnt enjoy it as much as i should have. Good concept with lot of enjoyable moments, though i dont thing it is as innovative as people praise have been sofar. I found it little overrated.
“Shaun the Sheep Movie”- 8.5/10
When i mentioned Spy as most entertaining this movie slipped from my mind. This is most entertaining family fun. I took a back seat in First few minutes after realizing it has no dialogues. But, once i got the characters, it is unstoppable. It is silent movie with full grasp of you into characters. It is a laugh ride with events created with innovative mechanism. It will remind you how you enjoyed your first TV cartoon.

The Rewrite
Neva heard of this but was ‘forced’ ( sometimes uve 2 “sit with some interestin person rather than the movie”, u know) Movies like this are predictable, cliche, even unremarkable, plus they are SMALL in budget & canvas.
‘small’ is the keyword here–some wrongly feel I have a penchant for BIG stuff.
(I think) this is about an (ex) award-winning screenwriter who loses his touch & isn’t able to piece together a coherent script. His pitches are rejected (esp after giving a few box office duds!) by producers wanting ” an edgy comedy with kickass women”! He has to swallow his pride just to survive and take up a teaching job in a non-descript town. He wastes no time in annoying the Jane-Austen loving influential ethical lead there. And selects his class NOT by going thru their scripts but ONLY by looking at their online photos –female hotties get in & a few male dweebs. (Obviously he bones a hot female student in no time).
BTW There’s nothing like a ‘spoiler’ here… Somehow it reminded me of another Bollywood modern ‘cult classic’ (& equally DISASTROUS on the box office called ‘Happy Ending’ starring Saif Ali Khan)..
& this maybe just an excuse for posting this admiration piece for Ileana Dacruz!
But it kept me awake & just about interested to nearly complete it. I’ve always found Hugh Grant an interestin actor and the ‘romcom’ tag did no justice to him. He’s run down and somewhat decrepit here, has lost most of his charm but there’s some residual charisma, his half-wit, self deprecating self semi intact. One can still locate the guy from Notting Hill, Four weddings and a funeral, Love actually etc.
JK Simmons (of ‘whiplash’ fame) as the dean is reliably effective in a low key role. Bella Heathcote is eminently immature and flirtatious (the perfect mix). Marisa Townei has a certain MILF-ey appeal but their entanglement wasn’t explored properly besides many other aspects.
The scene wherein Hugh lets his ‘student’ enjoy his success was subtlety effective (& my fave scene) & it was enjoyable to see him ‘step back’. The director somehow manages to give the characters some layers, nuance and feeling.
There’s a well concealed misogyny angle here (besides some other problems). It’s ‘well concealed’ only bcos the usual misogyny watchdogs (or watchbitches!) won’t detect it. But when u have the only one or two dweebs writing better scripts than all the gals it’s significant.
Also the ‘Jane Austen’ loving woman is now becoming a cliche–a single LONELY ( & sexually deprived) woman in the need of company (& maybe more!).
In the current landscape only high concept plotting and ‘franchise worthy’ material finds backers and audience, relegating such films onto direct to DVD release. But again who cares a damn? The material finds its (worthy) audience & critic ..so what of its a ‘chick flick’ (or a skin flick or whateva..).
Most of Grants jokes don’t hit the mark now, infact many of them are now non-jokes or even faux-humour but what makes it interesting to me is how he feels he’s pulled it off (just by turning up).. So typical of some1…
Hugh gets an ace tagline though (that I’ve also professed)

You’ve never concealed your admiration for Dilip Kumar. What makes him a role model for you and generations of other actors?
I have admired his performances, for to me, they have remained beyond any fault. I have admired his intellect, and the way he has translated that into his work. And I have admired his clarity of speech in whichever language he speaks. Clarity in speech is to me the greatest acumen for an actor. You cannot have clarity of speech without the understanding of its graph and tenor. You cannot be a great actor without the benefit of these two elements in your expression – graph and tenor!

love it! he is totally correct on speaking with clarity. It is not taken seriously these days. These two had different styles when preparing for a role…but both excelled in front of the screen.
I grew up a ‘die-hard’ Bachchan fan and it was through Bachchan I became a fan of DK also…before I watched Shakti I didn’t know how powerful an actor DK was. My dad was a DK fan but I just didn’t get the hype…I do now.

After Indian superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan shared their thoughts about the growing intolerance in India, renowned singer turned music composer, Adnan Sami, who was recently granted citizenship in India has spoken about the controversial topic.
“If there was intolerance in the country, would I have asked for citizenship in the country? I believe actions speak louder than words,” said Pakistan-born Sami.
Last seen in the song Bhar Do Jholi from Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, speaking about the love he got from the people in India, he said:
“When my first album came out, it wasn’t Bollywood. The love that I received from people was everything and it still is everything for me. After 16 years, it is not just the land where I work, but also my home and my love.”

Watched Comedy Nights Bachao with SRK and team and what a fun episode and the cast just oozes charm and impressed with Varun again.
Nothing to beat SRK when he is not in movies these days…..a very rare ability to say all the right things at the right time apart from being charming and possessing all the people skills.
I remember clearly when Comedy Nights with Kapil had just started and was doing okay when suddenly SRK with his team landed on the show for Chennai Express promotion and it got the required visibility/ respectability and the show took off to another level thereon. It has been doing the same for Comedy Nights Bachao since this weekend as per common consensus this was one of the best episode recorded with all the witty / fun dance moments…..and yes Bharti Singh is actually very talented apart from being hilarious.

Watched it Saturday night.
Was very good. It was well scripted and had funny dialogues. Best part is SRK and his team has no problem with joke being on themselves.
That Shaqueel guy is funny. His face and voice goes with his humor.
This promotion business may take more out of you than the actual shooting of the film. You have to have strong stemina and will to be on promotion blitz straight for 3 weeks. Travelling all over, going to different shows, cities, etc…

On that note looking forward to Bigg Boss 9 episode on ‘unees bees’ December where another TV stalwart is the reason to watch that show with amazing timings.
Further to that SRK comment where he said star system is important, or films / sports etc would come to an end…..its becoming increasing necessary for movies to rely on these big stars with something more than straight ‘acting’ and I am inclined to think stepping out to a theatre nearby and watching movies will slowly turn out to be only for these so called ‘events’ movies and ‘star’ spectacle.
Those looking for serious cinema and story telling will have to rely on TV where the elongated storytelling opportunities afforded by television trump cinema’s frayed reliance on the drudgery of 130 minute three-act plots.

“star system is important”
It always has been. Only thing is in 40s thru mid 80s, Film was the only source of entertainment for most and only way to see it was in theatre so even your sub par movie would end up making money because audience had no choice but to see it in a theatre.
Now, the movie is out on net same day, and on DVD.
The small movie has to be really special now for the audience to go see it. And the audience does spend money on good small movies.
The issue Bollywood really has right now is these 3 khans has touched 50, and they’re the ones still at top. The new generation hasn’t stepped up yet outside of brief sparks here and there.
I think Ranbir, Varun and Ranveer will have to take over at some point (after couple years).

Agree to the first part of your comment. Now with new releases coming to TV sooner than later (Shandaar premiered on TV this weekend), its going to get increasingly difficult for regulars to survive at the cinema if the audience loyalty is not built as audience can easily wait for a month for these small timers.
On the 3 Khan bit, you need to add Akki and Ajay to the mix for sheer hard work and willingness to work with the audience. If you notice all of them have changed gears (reinvented ) at least 2-3 times in their career. That kind of commitment is missing and except Varun who is increasing his reach day by day , rest of the younger lot stuck with multiplex kind.
Just wait and watch like Tamasha, Bajirao M will also be just a weekend deal since Ranveer has not done anything to cross over. DDD was a 100 cr movie at the very least with that kind of look, music and promo…..

What I meant is – those looking for serious and edgier stories.
TV shows can be free-form and the ideas don’t have constraints as films are getting more expensive and there is a need to be marketed properly and tend to simplify to sell.

Here are the details around the film’s economics, EXCLUSIVELY at KoiMoi:
Cost of making – 100 crore
Cost of Print & Advertising – 20 crore
Total cost – 120 crore
Satellite rights – 50 crore
Music and other ancillary rights (home video, in flight entertainment etc.) + Overseas (expected) – 70 crore
Total recovery *without India theatrical* – 120 crore
From this point on, whatever collections come from India theatrical would add on to the profits for the film.
This isn’t all as the film would also have a huge international release in the long run (starting with the huge China release in 2016) that would further continue to bring in revenue.
Given the economics of the film, expectations that one has from it and the hype that the makers [Eros, Bhansali] have managed to create so far, Bajirao Mastani is well on its way to be a good commercial success. Now one waits to see how much entertaining does it truly turn out to be, once audiences begin to step in on 18th December.

The descendants of Peshwa and Chhatrasal dynasty had organized a protest at Shaniwar Wada on December 12 against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film ‘Bajirao Mastani’ which is scheduled to release on December 18, 2015. According to reports, the protesters had gathered at Shaniwar Wada, the ancestral capital of the Peshwa to condemn the promotional videos and songs of the movie. The protest was led by Undaysinh Peshwa, who was joined by Kothrud’s BJP MLA Medha Kulkarni, descendant of Chhatrasal. On the occasion, the protesters burnt an effigy of Bhansali and shouted slogans against the movie.
Recently, a petition was filed in a Pune court seeking a ban on the film, alleging that it has distorted history relating to late king Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa and his family members. “When Bundelkhand was attacked by Muhammad Shah Bangash, Chhatrasal Bundela, who was 80-year-old at the time of the attack, asked Bajirao Peshwa to intervene. Bajirao defeated Bangash, and was offered Mastani’s hand by Bundela, her father. She came in Bajirao’s life in 1722 and died in 1740. However, Bhansali has twisted the facts and it is not acceptable to us as it hurts our sentiments”, clarified the protestors alleging Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
“The trailer and promotional videos of the movie prove that it is an attempt to distort the historical figures of Maharashtra and Bundelkhand. We are requesting the concerned people to remove these trailers and the objectionable content from the movie, which is not according to the history,” claimed the protestors.
Last month, Mohini Karkarey, who is a descendant of the Peshwa, wrote an open letter to director Bhansali after ‘Pinga’ was launched. In the letter, she claimed that Kashibai couldn’t dance as she was suffering from arthritis. Karkarey has also claimed that Mastani was not a courtesan, but the daughter of Raja Chatrasaal of Bundelkhand.
Time and again, the entire cast has emphasized on the fact that there is a difference between the film being inspired from history and based on history. It will be interesting to see how the Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone-Priyanka Chopra starrer fares at the box office.

Marathi courtroom drama “Court” is not the only Indian film with a regional flavour vying for a spot in the nominations for the 88th Academy Awards. Malayalam movie “Jalam”, Kannada film “Rangitaranga” and Konkani film “Nachom-ia Kumpasar” have also made it to the eligibility list.
Hindi film “Hemalkasa” has also made it to the final list of 305 movies, along with Indo-Australian movie “Salt Bridge”.
The compositions from “Jalam” and “Salt Bridge” are among the 74 songs contending for nominations in the Best Original Song category at the 88th Academy Awards.
“Bhoomiyilenghanumundo”, “Koodu vaykkan”, “Pakalppaathi chaari” and “Yaathra manoradhamerum” are songs from “Jalam” fighting for the spot in the category, as mentioned in the official website of the awards.
The film stars Priyanka Nair, Prakash Bare and is directed by M. Padmakumar.
As many as seven songs from “Salt Bridge”, which stars Rajeev Khandelwal and Usha Jadhav, have made it to the long list.
The songs are: “Aankhon me samaye dil”, “Bachpana thaa”, “Kanpne lage tum”, “Kyaa bataaun tujhe”, “Le jaaye jo door tumse”, “Na jaane kitni door” and “Sookha hi rang daalo”.
Chaitanya Tamhane’s debut Marathi movie “Court” is the India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category. The final awards nominations will be announced on January 14, 2016 and the ceremony is set to be held on February 28 at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

– This is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s BEST looking film. Every frame is filled with color, light, and the set decor and costumes are spectacular. The scene that stands out is Bajirao’s coronation scene where he sits on the throne for the first time. It will stay with you even after the film ends.
– The songs are a very important part of the storyline. Even though Pinga didn’t catch on and become a rage like Dola re Dola, it comes in the film at a very important junction and changes the flow of the storyline. Albela Sajan is the most beautifully shot song in the film.

Akshay Kumar who is gearing up for the release of Airlift has decided to join the league of actors in order to work towards the development of the Chennai, Tamil Nadu after the city faced terrible losses due to floods recently. The actor has donated Rs. 1 crore to the relief fund of Chennai floods.
Director Priyadarshan who has worked with Akshay Kumar in films like Hera Pheri helped the actor for making the donation. Since Akshay was in a dilemma about how to go about the process of contributing to the relief funds, he decided to take the help of the filmmaker. Priyadarshan revealed that since it was a huge amount, he advised Akshay to donate it to the Bhoomika Trust, a charity fund run by actress Suhasini Ratnam, wife of filmmaker Mani Ratnam.
