    • True, and his movies are not where it’s set in some house. He creates these huge sets which takes time.

He probably has great team of project managers working for him.

      • I agree completely. Also Dilwale looks to have a budget of over 100 crores, and with the type of Budget SRK-produced movies have, I wouldn’t be surprised if this has the same budget as BM. The last big budget movie that was filmed this quickly was Lingaa last year, where filming started in may and it released in December cause Rajini wanted a quick hit movie but that ended poorly. But with both Lingaa and this movie, I don’t understand what people mean by “it looks like the filming was rushed”?

Rohit Shetty has an amazing…I guess “talent”. I can’t call it luck anymore cause this has been going on for 6-7 years now. Starting with Golmaal Returns, he’s had 1 release every year and every film has been at least a hit. And after Dilwale, he has that ram lakhan remake, probably another singham/golmaal sequel and then another SRK movie-he’s looking at least a 10 year run of continuous yearly hits. And these aren’t debatable hits either such as Don 2, JTHJ, these are solid hits and blockbusters. I can’t think of any director with this type of track record- I know David Dhawan/Priyadarshan tried to do this but even they weren’t this successful.

  5. The problem with this trailer is that it doesn’t showcase anything new, its Rohit Shetty cinema laid on a plate, I would go as far to say an amalgamation of every other Rohit Shetty film. Theres guns, action, romance and some jokes but nothing unique to an SRK-Kajol film. Though there might actually be a story though this time which is a step up! I always felt that Rohit Shetty was not the guy to bring SRK-Kajol back on our screens and this sort of proves it.

Still, it will walk away with the bragging rights in the first week battling BM i think, theres no doubt in my mind that this will be the first choice for most cinemagoers, it’s very ‘massy’.

That bgm though is brilliant, loved it.

    • but that’s true for most Rohit Shetty films. In fact the odd thing about him is that most of his trailers don’t really excite anyone and while everyone shows up for his films very few are really loved by any either. So he’s the strange example of a director who only depends on his films being liked just enough for audiences to remain interested. And he’s of course mastered the formula that keeps getting them in.

      • @Satyam you said this looks like an easy success, but is that what SRK was really going for here? A 200-250 crore grosser that becomes his biggest hit? Because I remember this film was announced shortly after PK destroyed all records so I’m inclined to think that SRK wants this to do what CE did at the BO…and if thats the case then I think he will be disappointed.

        • Direct competition with BM will hurt big time but Christmas/New year is the best time to release since there’s like a 10 days festive mood.

Big factor is if the movie is liked or not. If not, audience will have another option in BM and will go watch that instead.

        • I reckon this will outgross CE. CE did what, 200 cr nett? I remember it was the highest grossing film for a small amount of time, so it must have outgrossed 3I. This is looking at 220-250, maybe less as BM will be there from day one eating into its nett collection. It doesn’t have the legs for much more. As for the ‘highest grossing film’ record and all that, fat chance. This isn’t going to be a 2nd CE in the sense that it is not going to get all the BO records for SRK at once.

Also, I think BM will need to be extraordinarily good with its wom to cause any problems for Dilwale at the box office. Historical films have that pre-reqesuite I think, and with the hype surrounding Dilwale it’ll take much for a historical film to draw viewers away from it (ofcourse is Dilwale is terrible then thats another issue, I’m going in the assumption that Dilwale will have average wom, neither very good nor very bad)

        • But I never expected this film to be a 300 grosser. I expected a CE-like scenario in today’s money. Whatever that number is. It’s not just about CE. No Rohit Shetty film trends strongly. The only exception is Singham (first one) which doubled its week 1 number (it didn’t start off at the same level but then it also had the ZNMD competition at points so that evens out somewhat). His cinema is of the disposable sort, some of it more enjoyable but nonetheless not designed to last. Which is true for most other ‘blockbusters’ too (almost all of Salman’s films before Bajrangi are like this.. even Dabangg which did much better still didn’t trend like Ghajini) but Shetty has mastered the art of coming up with just enough. So for instance he doesn’t have an HNY where the film is massive and record-shattering on opening day or something and then more or less fizzles out but gets to a deceptively good number because of this. He usually has films that are relatively stable in week 1 and do half-decently to decently in week 2. And so with that kind of filmmaking you can never get to 300. Eventually the initials will become big enough for 300 to be attainable even for Shetty (this happened with 200 earlier) but till that time you still need a rather liked film to get there. D3 didn’t. Bajrangi did, PK did even more. Let’s if Barjatya can do it. But the point is that no matter how mammoth the initial you can’t bulldoze your way to 300. Again without initial being a huge part of it but then the high bar at that point will be much higher too. I think that even without competition 250 was probably the most likely optimistic scenario for the film. It can still do this if BM doesn’t amount to much. Note by the way that only D3 has even crossed 250 so far (barring the two 300 grossers). So it’s not as if everyone can do 250. And here there’s also the whole issue of producer totals and the like. the reason this is important is that they tend to be more inflated on the lower end (with blockbusters than the opposite). If your film is genuinely getting to 300 you don’t have much incentive to make it 320. But if you’re getting 175-180 you might want to get it to 200 (as I believe to be the case for some films including HNY). Of course if you’re Roshan you get 250 off 175 but that’s another matter. The point again is that blockbusters come with great expectations and everyone including the stars are under some pressure. And hence there is always reason to give out these big numbers. All producer numbers are not created equal even if as a general matter they’re all fictions. Why? Because anything that cannot be accounted for precisely cannot be reported as such. At best one can have a range. In India every last ticket isn’t accounted for. It isn’t even close. the reporting is not transparent. to then claim a film did 201.35 crores is absurd! But it works as it makes the figure look more real than it is. Of course one can arrive at a certain range. One can figure out how well a film did overall relative to another. That’s a different matter though sometimes even here things can be misleading.

        • To be fair, I think 250cr would be like final total which is not bad really. Anything above will be surprising, the reason being.. for decades SRK’s audience is very different than the Rohit Shetty audience. CE at least was in SRK’s zone(story template) with little of Rohit’s comedy but here its full on Rohit Shetty circus with ‘Adhaar card jokes’ so on which are alien to many ‘metro’ SRK fans. It would be easy success in Rohit Shetty belts but its not going to impress all of SRK’s city fans, so losing some here and gaining some extra in other belts, it would settle down around 250crores IMO. Anything above it bonus.

        • it’s hard to see a scenario where it gets to 250 if BM does a 100 or something. Also keeping in mind everything I’ve just said about Shetty’s kind of cinema. BM would probably have to fail for this to happen. It’s still possible with BM but Shetty would need a film with a much stronger emotional arc than he’s been capable of in the past.

  7. Deeply unimpressive, but hey it’s Rohit Shetty, so I’m sure a big grosser is on the cards here. The one departure from other Shetty films that I’ve enjoyed is that this one seems too straight and earnest (i.e. as opposed to Chennai Express), and while that clearly works for him in films like Singham, I don’t think he’s made a “sincere” gharelu film…

    Like

    • if anything I thought CE was straight and earnest. It had one story line and stayed with it from beginning to end.

This ones from trailer seems all over the place, too much masala.

      • I really liked CE (havent been an SRK fan for a long time now) because I felt the classic Rohit Shetty style was more subdued there. Here he seems to be falling back to his golmaal/singham days. this one will be certainly a monster at the boxoffice, it seems to have something for everything (SRK-Kajol romantic sequences, dollops of rohit shetty action and just a dash of Baazigar at the end). this will make between 250-300 crs whether they clash with BM or not

What do SRK fans think? Does this trailer meet their expectations?

    • agree on the earnestness bit. If he handles it right this film will have better trending. If it’s just part of the mix it might be more of a tonal problem. But Shetty is so much in the zone at the moment it’s hard to bet against him.

I must say I don’t like Varun DHawan at all and it’s unfortunate to see him getting so much footage (even if I know most of the audience doesn’t have a problem with this).

      • “I must say I donโ€™t like Varun DHawan at all and itโ€™s unfortunate to see him getting so much footage ”

Actually I expected more of Varun Dhawan seeing the promotion and posters but this looks like major SRK-Kajol movie with Varun just on the side(‘I can do anything for my brother’ types).

        Like

        • with all due respect that’s a straw man.. if there were more of Varun in this trailer it would be his film! In the posters they’re all equally important (it’s not even like HNY where SRK was more centrally located). I’m not saying that SRK wouldn’t be ‘heading’ the cast somehow but the point is that SRK fans also tend to be a bit anxious about the multistarrer aspect and declare it almost as the opposite rather too easily. Given that this is ultimately a SRK vehicle how much more footage could you expect Varun to have in the trailer? Furthermore I think SRK is perhaps increasingly looking towards a format where if he’s alone in the film it’s usually something smaller or else if he’s going for an absolute blockbusters he pads it with other stars. He did this with HNY and this seems to be familiar in that respect. Put differently SRK is not looking for much more than ‘symbolism’ in some of these ventures. Because he knows if it works no one’s going to credit Varun DHawan with it. At the same time because the other star has enough to do he can get a win out of it (so Abhishek was the only one who got something out of HNY). Since SRK is only banking on the box office aspect of it he’s not left with much if the film doesn’t live upto expectations in this sense. Again what he wants is essentially a blockbuster here to show ‘I can still play with the big boys’ and then smaller successes elsewhere to do the rest. This is the Farah Khan aesthetic if you will (have other stars or at the very least a circus.. the star doesn’t have to lift the load to the same degree in this kind of venture.. just lend his symbolic authority.. on a related note Akshay’s been doing the same in the Houseful movies..). CE was an exception to the rule (notice by the way how he didn’t go for a solo after this as one might have expected.. because he’s really looking for the biggest number possible). Beyond this the only time this formula has ever worked for SRK is with that OSO-CDI double in 2007. Usually it’s been disappointing returns for him at both ends. Let’s see if this changes with Dilwale and then Fan/Raees. But it’s the same sort of double. The point again is that Salman doesn’t depend on this other stuff nor does Aamir. This also dovetails with the other point I keep making. About his history and so on.

        • Actually there’s nothing of Varun in this promo, nothing that suggest the movie is his. And it’s a bigger problem in todays cinema as far as multi starrer movies are concerned with a top star in it. The 2nd lead is more of a side actor instead or proper 2nd lead.

Check out old multi starrer films. Take Naseeb for example, you know it’s Bachhan film but Rishi and Shatru is given equal importance and they don’t come across like a space filler. The movie actually looks better and has better effect. Qurbani is another great multi star film.

Multi starrer like HNY, Dhoom series and I suspect same with Dilwale are nto truly mulit starrer films, the 2nd lead is more like space filler, nothing else.

          Like

        • But the Naseeb thing proves the opposite point. Because Rishi or Shatrughan have good roles but Bachchan is the symbolic center. That is always how it was even in those days. Today the scripts are much weaker so both the lead star and the other stars just look weaker. But even in those days where even the supporting actors had good parts (calling them equals is going too far) that didn’t mean that there wasn’t a symbolic center. That’s precisely why it was a Bachchan film. Not just this by the way. Given that those films also exhibited a certain politics Bachchan was the guy feeding that politics whereas the other stars weren’t doing this. So it was a symbolically charged part even in this other sense.

The only multistarrers that didn’t have this issue is where the stars had parity and there one star or the other could do better in the minds of the audience. these were usually the lesser multistarrers. Again the parts were less well-written here and so it wasn’t easy for anyone to dominate.

Getting back to SRK’s multistarrers one often gets the sense that he’s occupying a much more passive role in these films despite being the symbolic center. Partly this is because the other stars lift the load sometimes but also because he gets the symbolic bits but those bits are not very well-written either. Or these are passive moments in the film. The symbolism in never earned. It might be different with Dilwale because the romantic history is more ‘real’ for him than they doing that ridiculous fight in HNY.

On Varun once more I still believe it’s an exaggeration to say he has nothing here. If so those posters are certainly a mystery (!). And I certainly saw more footage in the trailer. But then I didn’t expect completely parity to begin with. You guys seem to be saying the same, just in a perverse way. That it’s a multistarrer only if Varun and SRK are equals in the film.

          Like

        • put differently I do agree that the secondary roles often don’t have much to do these days. But I think the more important point is that most of the time even the leads are just filling space. They too don’t do anything much beyond going through the basic though ‘fans’ of various kinds are satisfied with this. Getting back to the Naseeb example Shatrughan had an important narrative arc in Naseeb, not Rishi as well though he still had enough moments to show his stuff. Today it’s just a collection of moments not really tied together in any compelling narrative sense. So sure the lead still has the most footage or at least more footage. But it still doesn’t amount to very much. On that note I’d say that even in a solo film like CE SRK was in fact a rather weak lead. He wasn’t really the center the way he is in OSO or many of his other films. One can debate a lot of this stuff as long as one is not driven by agendas or anxieties.

rohit Shetty in any case isn’t the sort of director to just put people centrally in the posters if they have nothing to do. this film is clearly being sold as some sort of ‘foursome’ with a ‘senior’ pair and a younger one. Then the brothers angle and so on. It would be absurd to have those posters otherwise. This doesn’t mean that SRK-Kajol aren’t central but it’s also not ‘hey I couldn’t spot Varun in the trailer’! Alright it’s like CE. let’s agree!

          Like

        • All I’m saying is the multi starrer of past had well etched out role for 2nd lead. There was some balance.

Now coming to Varun, sure he is on poster but so was zayed khan in posters of MHN, shreyas talpade on OSO poster, uday/abhi on dhoom posters, etc…There’s no balance.

          Like

        • did zayed have equal footage on MHN posters? I might have forgotten! Abhishek certainly didn’t give that impression on the HNY posters.

        • Equal footage on the poster leads to equal footage in the movie?

I wonder if that’s what sunny deol thought when he looked at the Darr poster ๐Ÿ™‚

You’re just dragging this knowing exactly what I’m trying to say. Keep it simple.

Multi starrer of yester years had much better role for 2nd leads than todays.

          Like

        • Not dragging out anything. I think my comment was clear on all these scores. But you’re now jumping to all sorts of examples. darr is hardly the norm in these matters. I’d just reiterate the larger point. What’s this anxiety that you (like some others have) where it’s not enough to say SRK’s the main guy or something. You have to persuade yourself that the other guy isn’t even there or if he’s there he doesn’t have anything significant. This sees to me far less about some sort of useful comparison with older multistarrers and far more about personal anxieties. Hate to put it as bluntly as this but you give yourself away with the things that you say. And again to make it clear I don’t have an issue with however much you love SRK or whatever you want his films to do. The problem is with these framings that are simply not reasonable. As always there’s the same disjunctive logic:

1)The other star has no footage
2)Even if he has footage it’s worthless
3)Even if he has footage Rishi Kapoor had better footage in AAA

I use these examples quite often. The ‘explanations’ can often be unconnected except that they’re united by an anxiety. In a nutshell the true blue SRK fan has been waiting for a very long time for the biggest blockbuster for him. Whether it was 100 or 200 or 300 either SRK didn’t arrive at the party or arrived too late. The problem here is that that the way SRK chooses films he’s always less likely to get to that mark. He’s not the Salman sort of star where anything he does is massive and anything half-decent can get to those higher benchmarks. Nor is he like Aamir where his prestige overwhelms everything (Aamir still has the biggest grosser the last time I checked and has had them for a while at 100 or 200 or whatever.. but hey he gets less credit.. I’ve commented on the absurdity of this structure many times in the past, won’t get into it here). I can understand the fan’s desire but there’s no need for this unrealistic framework to be attached to it.

Wreckage might be a site in Iceland or whereever or whatever [unfortunately, I am not invested in Amitabh or SRK or SK to an extent where I almost ‘stalk’ the star or his films’ contents and take it as a personal to-do to even ‘promote’ a star’s production without even having the star – so thank you for the knowledge you imparted about the crash]; what I mentioned was just images conjured up from other movies while watching the trailer.

There are many scenes in many films that conjure up images from different movies – [Saif Ali Khan’s ‘loneliness’ in PHANTOM to Amitabh’s in Kaala Paathar; or Shaan’s Shaakal lair to umpteen Bond movies of the ’70s and ’80s]] – intentional or as a homage or as spoof. 13. I put this comment in the images thread by mistake, this was my initial comment on the film:

looks like an easy success. most Shetty trailers are like this anyway. This one might have some more emotional hooks to the story and therefore ensure better trending. But yeah it certainly seems like a proper multi-starrer. Not the sort of thing to challenge the biggest totals though (even without competition) but then Shetty isnโ€™t that sort of director anyway. The trailer (and I expect the film) looks to be a museum of SRKโ€™s career.

And isnโ€™t there something curious about this impulse inasmuch as you then necessarily depend on the history and always shine a greater light on it than on the present in which you hope to keep renewing yourself? In other words Aamir and Salman donโ€™t really look back in this sense. Similarly the whole โ€˜great starโ€™ motif โ€˜(from Bachchan-like to Fan and so on) is also part of the same move. First off it needs to be โ€˜assertedโ€™ at every point. But beyond this it again suggests a summation moment.

In terms of the trailer the reason all of this is important is that all of the moments here donโ€™t somehow exist in the same โ€˜time frameโ€™. Which is to say that some are a bit too much part of an older archive, others of a very contemporary one and so on. Which is different from CE where there wasnโ€™t this sort of mix.

Paradoxically in the hurry to be truly โ€˜historicโ€™ one can end up making disadvantaging oneโ€™s present. The opposite is also true. Often those who are truly historic are not really bothered by their histories at all or at least act as if those histories did not exist. In various contexts Iโ€™m a great critic of the latter impulse as well.

In any case the film being big is not questionable. How much it ends up doing is the only somewhat academic debate here.

Box office earnings are not an issue here and may do wonders even if the jokes are at Golmaal level but at the same there is potential to crash if content is downright witless / daffy esp coming in so quick after the HNY fatigue. Nonetheless as I pointed earlier just the Overseas earnings cover cost of srk movies, its the justification of super-stardom which is at stake here and need of the hour is to justify hype associated with the name – SRK. (esp in context of recent controversies).

Happy to see they have adequate disclaimers at the beginning โ€“ from the makers of Golmaal / Bol bachchan / Chennai Exprees expressโ€ฆโ€ฆ.so audience will enter the theatre with that kind of expectation. Supporting cast (Johny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari) normally do the job in these kind of projectsโ€ฆ and its the content given to them which will make or break this movie. Johny Lever was exceptionally funny in Golmaal 3.

I still feel BM is no competition for Dilwale box-office wise but if BM is not a bore fest / SLB usual self indulging crap then prestige battle will be lost for sureโ€ฆโ€ฆ I expect SLB making a very hammy BM.

You are not alone. Actually even before the film went on floors, there were rumors that this is Hum remake. But actually the only angle like Hum is that he was a gangster earlier and now living a normal life until his past shows up. But Kajol and SRK got separated coz they are of opposite gangs – like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (or R&J). Rohit Shetty even remade Golmaal into a hit film but taking 1 angle of Hum and there is still enough potential to make this into interesting script. Lets see..

The key and the strength of the movie will lie on the SRK’s past footage as the gangster. If it is made anywhere near as well as in Hum for those portions, then the film will have that strong base to build its story on. If those parts turn out to be flat, then it dents the whole movie.

A lot will depend on how Shetty handles that part. In Hum, Mukul Anand handled those portions brilliantly and the film had that strong
and intense base to build on.

    • I’d be very surprised if this didn’t do very well. Put differently I’d be very surprised if this followed a HNY trajectory as opposed to the usual Shetty one where films open big and stay stable for at least a week and do a half decent second week, all enough to get the film to a good total. Not expecting Aamir-like trending here of course but that doesn’t happen with any Shetty film or most films for that matter. Of course one has to adjust for the competition. If BM doesn’t work (say it’s an OSO/Saawarya think where he latter faded after a very strong opening in the first few days) one can use normal solo standards. But if it works and is itself a 100 crore sort of deal then one has to account for that. You’re not likely to have a 250 crore release (going by CE standards) and a 100 crore one side by side. Unless of course both films are considered very good by the audience. Still think Ranveer is the weak link in BM, specially in this sort of competition situation. Also the BM story has no resonance outside Maharashtra. It’s hard to think of big period films without broader resonance opening very well. Even JA struggled initially (and of course was never quite big in that sense). I could be wrong and maybe Bhansali has made a more engaging movie than he’s usually capable of. All I’m saying is that most of the scenarios here are in Dilwale’s favor. The rest depends on the film.

    • 55 crore is too low.. or let’s put it this way.. it it’s 55 and given how Shetty’s movies usually trend even in the best case scenario you’re looking at something that wraps up in the 100-120 range. That would be a total failure. Anything can happen of course but that’s just not a likely scenario. For one a 55 crore total would mean terrible WOM on day 1 which would then impact even the weekend to enable that sort of low number. Just think Shetty is too much in the zone right now to have that kind of underperformer. The film could do less than expectations, that’s another matter. On competition BM is just not serious enough in my view. Bhansali’s best case scenario is a 100 and that too when it’s a solo. You add in the period factor, no major lead star, the subject with no resonance outside maharashtra, it’s just a high mountain to climb in any case but specially with this sort of competition. Even if it does well it’s just not likely to be a serious challenge for Dilwale. Put differently if the film is otherwise doing well this in’t going to stop it from getting to a significant total. Competition isn’t the difference between 150 and 250 or some such gap. Of course these arguments often get muddied because fans for obvious reasons tend to exaggerate the competition bit. yes competition obviously has an impact but depends on what kind it is. And it’s also how much damage a given film can do. You know how this goes right? Let’s say the film does 220. Fans will say it would have done 300 without competition. Well what about CE then? And so it goesโ€ฆ! Shetty in any case has never been close to 300 in any scenario.

      • “Letโ€™s say the film does 220. Fans will say it would have done 300 without competition. Well what about CE then? And so it goesโ€ฆ! ”

Competition does impact but very little IMO in the final gross of an accepted movie. For instance CE did 227 crs (acc to Producers), it might have touched 250 without competition and JTHJ which did 124 cr would have passed 150 cr without SOS and solo release. If the movie is rejected completely then there is lot more value in being released solo and get majority of collections in 1st weekend and week but accepted movies tend to cover the difference eventually. Like, don’t think Ra.One could have made 115 crores if released with another big film as competition with same WOM.

        Like

        • I wouldn’t say competition doesn’t have an impact. It does especially today where even the biggest grossers do pretty much all of their business in the first three weeks. In other words if you lose anything on the initial you can’t really make it up. Unless the film enjoys exceptional trending and even so you can’t make up everything because the films that have had the highest grosses at any point for a number of years now have also had flying starts. You don’t need the biggest possible opening but it should be up there, at least in terms of the weekend. Now for a flop film this becomes academic and for a massive blockbuster perhaps (it doesn’t matter all that much whether a film does 300 or 320) but everything in between can be adversely affected. My only point is that one cannot cynically cover any gap one likes using this idea. But otherwise competition does hurt a film, specially in any age where Hindi films (for all sorts of reasons include the poor quality of the films) just don’t last that long in the theaters even in the best case scenario. I’d agree on your flop point (assuming it’s a total rejection) but not really on the successful film. Put differently blockbusters do have the advantage that they’re a lot more review proof, however if WOM is decent but not especially good and if it’s not the D3 kind of deal which everyone thinks is unmissable (in the initial run) then such a film can fade relatively fast, specially if there’s an alternative.

Here the other point the should be made about BM (let alone anything smaller than this is) that the ticket prices these days don’t allow very many people to double dip at the very same time. And so if you have to choose you’ll go with Dilwale over BM.So the latter already starts with this disadvantage. Bhansali would have been far more sensible going for a different date and giving his film room to breathe. The clash narrative helps but usually when the films are somewhat comparable.

      • My simple point is – let’s say 5K screens are divided between Dilwale and BM. Because of SRK , assume – Delwale’s gets 60% of the screens. That’s 3K screens. Whether BM is 100% on 2K screens or not is irrelevant (because they are NOT available to D).

What D can do with those 3K screens is its maximum revenue.
That won’t and cannot be enormous.

        • for Dilwale to get to 250 it can’t be liked less than CE and BM must also be more or less a failure. It’s true that CE today would have done 250 probably (certainly going by the same producer totals). But CE was liked more than many of these big films. It wasn’t ETT. But you can get ETT-like numbers and everyone will still call it huge and what not. Just that those numbers won’t be enough to get you to 250. Of course if BM is a slow starter and then doesn’t do much after that or stays stable at a very low end then Dilwale is more or less like a solo release. My own instinct watching the trailer is that it won’t trend as well as CE. It will have to make up the difference by opening bigger. But I could be wrong about this. I’m certainly expecting an easy success here but the trailer is more uneven than many other Shetty ones (though I don’t agree with those who say this is a poorer Shetty trailer).

This means a huge opening should be expected..and you add in SRK/Kajol factor…the dhawan kid on a hot streak…this is why on paper it *should* open huge.

OK if ‘Fan’ or ‘Raees’ were releasing the standards should be lowered..but not with this huge film…even with BM releasing against it. Lets face it…the majority of theater space will be given to Dilwale…30cr should be the starting point for an opening here. BM does not look all that impressive and the star cast is weak on top of that, then add in a very niche audience for a Bhansali film…all I’m saying the high expectations should not be lowered for Dilwale.

I think opening day will be around 18 crore and occupency would have to be in 80% to get to that.

If I get my screen count wrong then obviously the totals won’t be achieved. But why would SRK announce the date of release unless he has some confidence on screen count. • Krish, I’ve read your comments and let me summarize them. You think Dilwale should ideally open at 40 crore but since its release with BM, 7-8 crores will be lost, so ideally it should release around 30 crores, right?

Lets see… You are adding 7-8 crores for BM which is not very wrong but the point is that theater can have as low as 20% capacity but it is still blocking lot of screen space and shows at multiplexes and single screens which would have helped Dilwale in increasing its collections.

So, based on your scenario –
        Working Day; D = 30, BM = 8
        Holiday both, D = 40, BM = 13.
        Holiday solo, D = 50 crores.

So, basically a working Friday has to do almost 40 crores 1st day collection and that’ll be 1st time.

But even BM will open in more theatres than the 1100 of haider. But then the number of theatres have also grown since then. If there were no competition I would have expected D to match the D3 opening day. The D3 brand is bigger but D would be releasing in more theatres to balance the brand. PRDP is releasing in 500 more theatres than HNY which released last year. Yes we should ideally wait for final screen count before making claims but I don’t see BM getting more than 1500 screens which compares well with Haiders screen count.

I also don’t think BM will get more than 1500 screens even with whatever they have blocked as part of the BB deal. Haider had around 1000 screens, if haider had opened today it might have got 1200 maybe. And neither of the two movies were any great openers. I think Dilwale will open well and will get to 30 cr on 3000 to 3200 screens. I think that’s pretty much what CE did give and take a few crores on a similar screen count. I do agree though a lot of this is based on screen count. Now if D is getting nly around 2700 screens it won’t get that 30 cr figure. But I don’t think SRK will be releasing it with BM if he wasn’t confident of screen space and content.

But you’re not comparing apples with apples anyway. Agneepath opened big. Bang Bang isn’t the usual masala. How did each of the don films open? Not that big. The second one was a Chrstmas release, had no competition, was still sluggish. Now doing a film with the biggest director around is a somewhat different matter. No one is saying he isn’t contributing to the total but there’s simply no evidence for the claim that SRK’s opening masala better than Aamir! Now with Hrithik and despite Agneepath (one could say this is a remake and has that buzz and so on.. but both Dons opened weaker than this) it’s perhaps fair to say he is’t most credible for masala (though Bang Bang is Hollywoodized action and stunts far more than masala). But the kinds of ‘blockbuster’ like deals SRK takes up with lots of things added to it in all sorts of ways from Farah Khan to Shetty (of course Shetty is a brand-name on his own) is a bit different from doing a purer narrative based masala film like Ghajini or else doing nothing masala films like Salman which don’t have much going for them besides him.

Now I do agree with you that Dilwale ought to open big. Might agree with some of your numbers as well. I’m not going to underplay it like some others here seem to be doing. But I do disagree with the comparisons you’re drawing.

Three Bollywood actors ranked in the top 10. Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan each made $33.5 million to tie at seventh placeโ€“thatโ€™s more than Chris Pratt and Ben Affleck combined. Bachchan, 72, out-earns the next oldest actor on the list, 63-year-old Taken star Liam Neeson, by $14 million, thanks to his roles in flicks such as 2014โ€ฒs Bhoothnath Returns. Bachchan bolsters his earnings as the longstanding host of Indiaโ€™s version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (Bachchanโ€™s version of the show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, recorded an average weekly viewership of 5.2 million in its 8th season, which aired in 2014.)

        • Z: I was thinking about this strategy and I think the main reason could be that Rohit Shetty’s movies have always had weak songs and none of the movies ever did good business of their songs. For his audience songs are not at all important and his movies do good in spite of that ‘bad’ songs. He has no reason to believe that songs can effect his movie in anyway.. when without songs his movies did good.. he can as well release whole song instead of 2 mins songs (its like aur 2 min se kya farq hoga) and movie still can do good based on his content. I think the risk here is less compared to a Dhoom 3 where songs are its USP.

    • hardly any good songs these days. At least outside a Rahman soundtrack. They just aim for passable stuff in most films. Even the pure romances these days have mostly poor soundtracks. There are of course exceptions but very few in any calendar year. Of course when I say ‘poor’ I also have a certain film music tradition in mind. What you have these days even on some of the better days is a kind of popular or rock ‘kitsch’ that everyone likes. Specially those crooning ‘ballads’! I don’t mind some of them myself but again they all sound the same in every sense and in any case have nothing to do with those richer archives of film music. Yet another sense in which Bollywood has completely abandoned its history (which is of course different from adding new chapters to it). Most of Bollywood functions like boutique cinema at every end of the production spectrum. And here whatever I might think of the films I do cheer the resistance offered by Bollywood’s Telugu-inspired masala. From Salman to Shetty. On that note wonder why the two have never come together!

But the way he walked, moved his body in songs mad him look manly. You get a sense of being mardana (manly).

Now they all present themselves as some sort girl hidden in a 6-pack mans body.

There was certain style, certain charisma back than.

I would say even up to very early 2000, it was okay, after that it’s all down hill. As far as songs are concerned. Of course there’s exception here and there.

“..And among actors, Rohit says his dream is to direct Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan. Bachchan had done a special song in Rohitโ€™s directorial venture ‘Bol Bachchan’ few years back. โ€œI want to work with him in a full-fledged film,” says Rohit. The director, known for his mass-entertainer films, had earlier said that he has been watching Bachchan since childhood and his films like Deewar, Zanjeer, Amar Akhtar Anthony are among his favourites. โ€˜I used to go on the sets of his films with my dad (veteran stunt-master-actor M B Shetty) and observe him. I still get scared when he is aroundโ€™, he was once quoted saying.
Besides Amitabh, Rohit would like to team up with Salman Khan obviously for an action-oriented film. “I would love to do a film with him. But it has to be something big for us to come together, like how I and Shah Rukh Khan came together for Chennai Express. I want the right script for Salman,” says Rohit.”

HAHK was released in 1 theater per city and Rajshri had appointed their own personal to stop any video piracy and then slowly increased theaters after its 50 days completion. There was no pirated copy available and everyone had no choice to watch it on big screen and it started breaking records after 2months and by then it was accepted blockbuster in people’s mind and they preferred going to cinema.

That’s why I say that movies of todays shouldn’t be compared to movies of yesteryears, especially the 60s, 70s, 80s.

Back than there were no choice but to see the movie in theatre and back than there were no other source of entertainment for most of the population except the movies in theatre.

        • I don’t really agree with Master. HAHK had that release but nothing else did at that time or for many years leading upto it. Secondly video piracy hit the industry hard in the 80s, in the late 80s and specially early 90s it started recovering with new kinds of directors on the scene and especially with strong soundtracks. HAHK was an experimental release, it kept running but it wasn’t defying those other laws. It just did very well. Just as today you can have a film doing as well as 3I. It just has to be liked enough.

On the rest you can do these comparisons but you have to do them in sane ways. One test is to figure out how the big hits of any given age performed relative to the standards of that period. So for instance a Bachchan film wasn’t huge because today no one can reach that standard but because no one could in that age either. But secondly one can’t only structure the argument to argue defensively for the present. Because you also have much weaker content that’s disabling larger grossers or strongly trending films. It’s not a mystery why Aamir most of the time manages to prove this proposition. But secondly films are also being called hits at much lower levels. There are almost no standards in place anymore. Put differently one doesn’t have to go back to the 70s or 80s (the 80s was a very weak box office period anyway.. barring Bachchan). You would have to to discount even SRK’s films (or other hits) from the 90s following this logic. One would have to say that DDLJ or KKHH became big because things were not like today!

Comparisons can always be done but they have to be ‘deeper’ ones and not agenda-driven. So if one doesn’t like the fact that the present doesn’t offer the same sorts of hits one can’t try and deconstruct the past. Now it is entirely possible that there are factors that on balance privilege an age more than others. Not just for cinema but in every walk of life. But that’s just history. You don’t get the same set of conditions ever. You just have to do that ‘deep’ comparison across the ages but even this can never be a perfect. Some leaders are great not least because they also get great circumstances. Others might have been great but don’t get those conditions. This doesn’t mean however that everyone who gets the latter can become great. So one has to be careful with these claims.

          Like

        • Satyam: I think you need to start thinking beyond ‘agenda’ in every post. I remember owning DVD pirated cassette in 1 week after DDLJ’s release and saw it multiple times over next 6 months but always went out to check HAHK in cinemas. That is from personal experience and that is still not to say HAHK is lesser hit but it had lesser piracy issues with movies of that era and eventually people loved to watch it on big screen once the word was out that its great movie.

          Like

        • wasn’t referring to an ‘agenda’ with respect to that point you made (though you must ask the opposite question.. what other example is thereof a movie that started in a one screen and gradually expanded? There is none at least after the 70s.. a film that has that sort of graph is probably not going to be hurt all that much by piracy.. but let’s extend this logicโ€ฆ maybe Fanaa isn’t doing as much as DDLJ because of piracy? because it’s just a greater factor in 2006 than it is in 1995! this is my problem with all of these examples.. you can’t just use two films.. you have to take that logic further everywhere..). I was talking about a larger move where any greater success in the past is always ‘accounted’ this way. By suggesting that some ‘special’ conditions held in the past that allowed for greater success then or whatever. An ‘agenda’ also does not mean that one actively and maliciously does these things. But one must question why one so easily accepts these explanations in certain directions or why one uses limited examples to prove a point and so on.

That also depends on your area. The main point is that once they started to send the reels to every theater in the city.. the piracy didn’t start. It was controlled very much and was given to the theater owners they had relations from years/decades. Theater owners were carefully chose for the first expansion which was after 2 months(50 days) and then another big expansion was after 100 days. Actually it was coming to regular theaters during its silver jubilee week and then we saw some pirated copies during that time. Also cable owners were very scared to show that movie on cable as they were scared they would be jailed(For instance.. Baazigar(not Darr), Khiladi, Salman’s movies was telecast on my local cable on its 1st week which was very norm in that times)

I’m very much into movies at that age and I remember it was during the silver jubilee week and I don’t have any proofs.. but you can take my post as an agenda and move on. ๐Ÿ™‚

          Like

        • as I said before as well it’s not about an agenda with reference to this point. But even accepting everything you’re saying as true (and I didn’t disbelieve it earlier either) this cannot be the only example of such things. As I keep saying maybe Fanaa would have done more had it released when DDLJ did or maybe DDLJ would have done a lot less had it released 10 years later. Again my question isn’t about HAHK vs DDLJ but about why this is the only example you have. Not on that specific piracy issue. Just overall.

        • So, that’s why I felt DDLJ doing as much as it without all those control is good enough and shows huge love for the movie in the audience. Its not like it did half of HAHK.. that time there were many articles.. will it cross HAHK and so on but it felt short which is fine for everyone concerned as it did enough business.

        • Dilwale was a huge grosser sand not even in the same universe as those films you’ve mentioned. Most of those were really in the average/above average category, a couple were hits or better. But nothing huge either way. DDLJ was also way ahead of KKHH, again DTPH was not close even to the latter let alone the former. HAHK was of course in a league of its own. But otherwise DDLJ was one of the big ones of that period. Then there was RH (which grossed as much as KKHH but assuredly sold far more tickets.. a larger share of its business came from smaller centers). Karan Arjun was also very successful but not as big as RH. Earlier in the 90s there were some significant hits but in the post DDLJ period nothing outgrosses it (HAHK was a year earlier) till you get to Gadar. the difference in gross between the two is still not that much but Gadar again was a small town monster so it sold many more tickets probably. Certainly no SRK film has been as successful as DDLJ. But there is nothing as successful as KKHH either in his body of work since. And what I mean by that is a combination of initial coupled with trending and then of course the final gross. But in this entire period first the major metros and then the multiplexes drove the Bollywood economy. So no film doing that well in smaller centers could be a huge grosser (Vivaah for example) and even the films that did well across the board couldn’t automatically become the biggest hits unless these same films were really successful in major centers. In any case things have been very different from a number of years now. Barring Aamir’s films and exceptions here and there no film doubles its week 1 number. On most of the ‘blockbusters’ the ratio is 70:30 and no one thinks this is a problem. Even as late as 2007 very different standards were in play. OSO in 2007 doubled its week 1 number more or less. In 2004 VZ faded relatively fast after a strong start, especially in Bombay. But it still doubled its week 1. MP, judged unfairly even by the standards of 2005, probably had a 60:40 ratio at worst. When you look at those hits of the 90s and even beyond this their ratios were far better. MHN itself had a somewhat better ratio than VZ (and of course the latter was a much bigger film). But these standards have been declining over the years. Not surprisingly. These films are made just for that initial big bang. They’re like extended trailers. At best they’re passable. Even if one likes them a bit more than that one wouldn’t dream of watching them a second time. And it shows. But you have a mushrooming of screens and prints (easier with digital copies) and you can really jack up the numbers for films that generate enough interest. And you get these huge numbers but you pretend that trending and all the other ‘laws’ don’t apply as they do in every other industry including in the rest of India (they do in Bollywood too but the trade pretends otherwise.. except when the true big hit arrives in which case from BOI to Adarsh everyone talks about trending! So the film is somehow a hit on day 2 — BOI on PRDP — even if it fizzles out very soon and then if it adds a 100 crores or more to such a total one can call it an ATBB or something, which term has also been abused beyond belief.. if Bajrangi is an ATBB I’m a secret RSS ideologue..) and we have the present. Now you can’t fool people completely. No one really thinks PRDP is a hit because as far as I can gauge people have mostly disliked it. HNY was in the same category. But with a Shetty film people feel the opposite. Because most people find it passable. It’s just a low bar. So most people think ETT is a hit. It’s a game of impressions but it’s correlated with box office realities only to the extent that the latter bar is just very low. People just don’t expect more than ‘passable’ most days and they then define this as a hit. When they dislike a film in large numbers they tend to disbelieve trade reports or whatever that assert the contrary. Still it’s a propaganda battle and hence the trade goes on and on with a certain message.

Most people in India are this way, they look at movie with perception of it’s either hit or a flop.

I still have not seen DDLJ, I’ve seen it in bits and pieces but not the whole movie. Will have to check it out someday.

When they met, they hugged one another and were seen locked in serious conversation for a good half an hour. Shah Rukh congratulated SLB on the songs of Bajirao Mastani and Bhansali expressed happiness over the trailer of Dilwale.”

According to those in the know, the two buddies have promised one another there won’t be any backbiting and bitching about one another’s film.

Says a reliable source. “SLB and SRK are not going to fall into the trap this time of getting into a slinging match as they did in 2007 Diwali when Saawariya and Om Shanti Om were released simultaneously. Their films are coming together. But sorry, there will no fireworks between Bhansali and SRK this Christmas.”

TV rights of SRK’s ‘Dilwale’ sold for Rs 60 crore?

This is said to be the start of a nearly Rs 220 crore deal between Shah Rukh Khan’s production house and a leading television network

Barely four months ago, Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainments (RCE) had plunged into the distribution market for his upcoming film, ‘Dilwale’. Now we hear the production company has entered into a ‘strategic alliance’ with TV network Multi Screen Media (MSM) to explore opportunities related to television, digital and film content.

Sources close to the star’s banner claim that MSM has acquired the satellite rights of ‘Dilwale’ for Rs 60 crore and the entire deal covering his next two to three creative projects comes to a whopping Rs 220 crore. “This is the first time in many years that the satellite rights of a movie has been sold before its release. The alliance involves some of the future creative content that RCE will make. Although not exclusive, it will be among the biggest and one-of-its-kind deals,” says a source. On April 10, hitlist had reported about the Rohit Shetty action-drama cracking the biggest music deal with Sony Music at Rs 19 crore.

Venky Mysore, CEO of RCE, confirms that the deal has been struck.

One has strong desire to mention a phrase like ‘the rest was history’, but in case of Khan, the ‘history’ just keeps repeating itself. Over the years, Khan has struck that pose (or has been forced to) so many times that, although it can be categorized as his trademark, it sure has lost its charm.

        • I think the logic is very simple.. during 2001.. they would think who’s the best and popular singer around? and Sonu gets Sooraj Hua Madham… now Pritam and team thinks.. who’s the best and popular singer around? Arijit gets the song. Its just that Arijit has huge fan following by wide margin in young singers (but its not songs like Gerua) and that matters!

          Like

        • yes that’s my point.. now I should say it’s also the case that you could have those older singers and cater to more of a family demographic. But the reason filmmakers generally wouldn’t make that trade is that the younger demographic is most likely to show up for a movie (and soon!) it’s interested. And to get it interested you need that kind of music. Ideally you should have a soundtrack that caters to all these segments but that’s still a ‘product’. A good soundtrack is not driven by just those considerations. But then films are also mostly made like that these days. Another thing which marks out Hirani. He’s willing to make the film he believes it and not overdo anything at any level to jazz things up. His soundtracks are never exceptional, they just sound better in the films, they could certainly be better but the point is that he’s not trying to deliver a product in that sense. But again he’s an exception. At least at that very commercial level.

          Like

        • Regarding old singers there is a heavy duty behind the scene copyright battle to which Sonu Nigam is at the helm leading that fight. Except probably KJO none of the producers have given inโ€ฆ.so reason for senior singers not doing news songs is largely due to that.

Secondly the old lot srk/salman/aamir/akshay are still ruling the billing and one of the ways they are reinventing is by not only working with new/ younger heroines but also sound different and that is where Atif / Ankit / Arijit are coming in ….

The main issue these days is scant regard to โ€˜Lyricsโ€™ and lack of โ€˜Indian instrumentsโ€™ being used in a song. Being Indians at the end of the day we are unable to live those songs as โ€˜strings of our soulโ€™ are attached to sitar ,santoor, tabla, flute etcโ€ฆ.

At the cost of sounding repetitive listen to Mohd Irfan with Indian orchestra setting and with the lyrics to die for โ€“ โ€˜Jazbaat naye se mile hainโ€ฆ. Jaane kya asar ye huaa hai …Ik aas mili phir mujhkoโ€ฆ..Jo qubool kisi ne kiya hai

Mohd Irfan ( sorry not Irfan Khan as I wrote earlier) is incidentally product of Amul Star of India reality show which had everyone give him standing ovation to his Tadap Tadap ( HDDCS ) rendition.

    Like

    • yes but these aren’t comparable films. In other words if there were two blockbuster-type films on the same day this sort of poll would mean something. But here Bhansali’s market, specially with this sort of subject is much more capped off. Dilwale’s isn’t. People by and large don’t have to be convinced to see this sort of film. Put differently a film like Dilwale can fail and still make a lot more than a Bajirao that succeeds. Of course anything can happen anytime. Maybe Dilwale does a Besharam and BM does 150. But those are very low probability events independently and even moreso together. The only impact BM has on Dilwale is affecting its initial. Because no matter how much people like the BM trailer they are not likely to miss Dilwale. The largest cross-section of the multiplex audience will either watch just Dilwale or both films. I don’t think too many people will just watch BM. And so even leaving aside how Taran did the poll and so on competition is only a serious problem when it damages a film, just reducing the numbers somewhat is not the same thing. If BM is liked enough it will work, I think 100 crores is really the limit for this film and would be so even if it released solo. But surprises can happen, maybe it’s really loved and does more. It might even attract the family audiences more over time (though note how SRK with the whole Kajol thing and the title is making more of a pitch for that older cross-section than would otherwise be the case in a Rohit Shetty film). So I’m not arguing for any one possibility. All I’m saying is that the poll probably doesn’t mean very much for box office realities as far as this ‘clash’ is concerned. A Bhansali trailer will always impress a certain audience more than a Shetty trailer. But how many of these more impressive trailers translate into films that do what Shetty’s regular achieve? Finally Bhansali is himself a brandname. He’s not a nobody. He’s made several films that audiences remember. Whether he has a solo release or not he gets his share of attention.

SRKs Rahul persona lingered a tad bit longer but met his inevitable end in JTHJ in a scene wherein srk is clearing snow and watching katrina. He had lost his timing totally and was a stranger in his home turf. Ironically SRKs Rahul ended in the same film as Yash chopra ie both went to heaven or hell together

Mehra reveals that Bajirao Mastani will have a much larger number of screens than Dilwale. โ€œBajirao Mastani has many more screens Dilwale, which will have problems with theatres. The single screens are all with Bajirao Mastani, says Amod Mehra.

โ€œEros (Distributor of Bajirao Mastani) has a better relation with the exhibitors of the country, but multiplexes will make sure that the merit of both films is rewarded by the number of shows and timings that they get. • Well it’s true that BM has already pre-booked single screens so it does have that advantage, but to echo what Satyam said before, there isn’t much convincing needed to go and watch Dilwale. I highly doubt Bajirao Mastani is carrying more hype, what is fair to say is that, at least going by social media, both trailers for BM had a better response than Dilwales, BMs scale is massive and that can go a long way in garnering positive reactions. Dilwale was carrying massive hype unlike BM, so that ultimately meant the trailer wasn’t going to please everyone and that was the case.

      Like

      • yes I think this clash thing is being hyped quite a bit. Fine. that’s part of the game. But here you probably have Eros ‘commissioning’ some of this stuff as well! It’s just not reasonable to think this is a ‘comparable’ clash in any sense. This doesn’t mean BM cannot do very well. Just that if each film lives up to its potential there’s still no comparison. As for saying stuff like this trailer looking more refined and so on.. that’s hardly news! In what universe does one ever expect refinement from Shetty! Not that Bhansali’s excess defines refinement for me either but I he’s certainly way better than Shetty one way or the other in that formalist sense. But no one was saying this about PRDP. What’s more cheesy and crude than a Barjatya film?! Not to mention scores of other blockbuster-types. The same folks keep celebrating these films and suddenly they’ve discovered a problematic Shetty film. So again I think this is copy more or less created by Eros!

On that note I should respond to Utkal as well here. Saw a comment of his earlier but couldn’t respond then. First off by no stretch of the imagination were CE and HNY the same in terms of gross (whether one takes producer numbers or not). Secondly HNY was exactly the PDRP trajectory (though looks like the current film will even do worse than that). So it’s not about Deepika in that sense (though I don’t disagree she was an important factor in CE). But even leaving this aside sure Shetty is the same old stuff we’ve seen so many times by now but again we shouldn’t be discovering this all of a sudden. Secondly my point wasn’t about what the better film will be but a simple box office thing. But yes all else being equal I’d much rather watch Shetty. Simply because Bhansali’s excess has by and large never been my thing. Is he better in any reasonably objective sense than Shetty? Sure! But I wasn’t really debating that.

Box-office safety net is now lost and now more so as people are up to their eyeballs when it comes to getting conned by these so called event movies. Bad wom will act as serious deterrent esp if one has an option. In view of disappointing HNY, SRK faces trust factor and he needs content more than anything for the long haul. BM will face a JTHJ kind of situation and even slight indications of outdated content will drive people towards a time pass /easy on the brains SOS type Dilwale.

Christmas ideally suits Aamir more since his base – the IT types working intelligentsia is on a prolonged 10 day vacation and gets them out. This advantage of target audience was lost when SRK had a Don 2 and Salman had Dabangg 2 in this period and they fizzled out soon after a good start.

But the film has twists and every chracter is not what he or she seems to be. So how well Shetty manages to pull this off will decide the fate of the film.

Well we don’t know who the song is pictured on… but it all seems to be coming back in full circle. The freshest thing in ‘Hum’ was Govinda crooning to thunder bird Shilpa Shirodhkar – Sanam Mere Sanam on that boat in the blue waters of Mauritius.

Watched Varun and Kriti on Big Boss9 and if they are given sufficient screen time they may add that extra zing which is missing at the moment between srk-kajol. Kajol compliments SRK well on the intelligence / witty part so dialogues are more key to that pair working. Varun seems like a real deal and coming across as an authentic personality on screen and seems very much at ease….a deadly combo of a Govinda-Salman !

Ironically for Rohit Shetty , the person who will get him the massive opening is also his weakest link here as srk tends to over act / ham heavily trying to do the cool gangsta act and has never been able to do justice to this don / mafia avatar whether it was in Duplicate / Raam Jaane earlier or Don and Don 2 recently. It all depends how much of a taskmaster has Rohit been to keep srk in check. The last toughie he faced was Shimit Amin.

    Like

    • I liked SRK as Don! I don’t think he hammed in Don 2 (certainly he did in Don as Vijay and definitely in Duplicate). For me, SRK is most at ease when he is an anti-hero. In fact it’s films where he’s overly romantic or in the romantic avatar that he just doesn’t work for me. From his recent films, I disliked his performance most in RNBDJ and I guess I wouldn’t have liked his turn in JTHJ (haven’t seen it) either. Dilwale seems likes it[s a mishmash of SRK as both Don and Raj, for me it’s a role he’ll most probably sleep walk through, there is nothing fresh here as far as he is concerned and depending on, as you say, how much the director has reigned him, he’s most probably going to ham it up in the ‘younger’ avatar.

Actually this song and video seems more from a YRF/Dharma film than a Rohit Shetty! There appears to a lot of romance in this film, and if Rohit Shetty gets this part right, then this film will be huge.

One can easily make out your and raghav/vijay agenda based on all of your comments for Dilwale. You’re not providing any constructive criticism. you’re just ticked off to know with each passing day that Dilwale will beat BM in it’s own territory too.

      Like

      • In fairness to Utkal and I say this as someone who disagrees with him probably 95% of the time he doesn’t have an agenda when it comes to stars. Liking someone more or less is different from having an agenda. I don’t agree with him on Dilwale either in the sense that I don’t see what’s particularly more offensive here compared to any other Shetty film. Even if one preferred CE in the initial rounds that’s hardly a difference of ‘kind’ when it comes to Shetty. Some films of his are better than others but most of the time, and certainly in this blockbuster phase of his career, no film stands out head and shoulders above every other (I’d myself take BB over anything else.. from an earlier phase I’d take All the Best, admittedly the least Shetty-like film). It’s not a ‘metaphysical’ difference. At the same time I also don’t agree with you or Master where one is hanging on to every song as meaning something important for the movie. It’s a regular soundtrack, nothing special here. Could it be among the better Shetty ones? Quite possibly. but that’s already a low bar. Boring love songs are not necessarily better than boring item numbers! Of course I’ve already said that this is no worse than tons of other soundtracks. Ultimately the initial is not going to depend on this kind of stuff. Or more precisely there’s no one who’s not watching the film for Shetty and/or SRK/Kajol or whatever but who’s going to show up just because of a song. Unless that song is an outright chartbuster or something special in that sense. Safe to say that’s not happening here (many songs get somewhat popular when played again and again in the advertising, that’s a different matter).

The only other thing to watch out here is whether the film can trend better or worse than the usual Shetty fare (this is true not just for him these days). All these other discussions are pointless because unless Shetty has really made a much stronger narrative here the trending pattern is not likely to be dramatically different. CE is probably the best one can hope for here. By today’s debased standards that’s pretty good. So yeah anything’s possible but you don’t go into a Shetty film expecting that sort of narrative strength. If anything here there’s a little bit of everything. BB or CE might have been more focused films for better or worse. This seems to be more of a hodgepodge. Which too is terrain he’s comfortable on but for long term trending you need more than this.

Getting back to the Utkal point I don’t agree with where he’s coming from on this as a general matter but at the same time one can’t pretend that this is some terribly fresh looking Shetty effort. I certainly preferred the BB advertising and even the CE stuff (for that terrain and audience) might have been better (or less stale). And here the problem might be the stress on the SRK-Kajol bits. I know why they’re doing it but it also makes the film look more passe to the same degree. Nonetheless it should still get a big initial. One would hardly wish to second-guess Shetty. Just how big remains to be seen. I will say that if this film opened huge it wouldn’t surprise me but if it were kind of underwhelming (but still did well) that wouldn’t surprise me either.

For the anxious SRK fans BM might be their best friend! One can always say ‘hey the film would have done 500 crores without BM’!

Its understandable to be emotional when his father was a stuntman and you possibly start respecting that from younger age. He also hired all the out of work stuntmen and gave them some job via his movies over the past decade. Finally, the stunts are actually difficult thing and taking a jolt/jump at 100 miles speed even lot of safety is a difficult task and needs to appreciated at some level.

  117. Q. What are the budgets of Dilwale and Bajirao Mastaani and how will they share 5000 screens?

Ans. Bajirao Mastaani landing cost will be around 125 crore and Dilwale 100 crore without Shahrukh Khan remuneration. Both films combined should get more than 5000 screens together but will be sharing screens and its here where timings come into play. Both films will want shows in the peak periods rather than getting the early or late shows when screens are shared. It should be a 60-40 share in favour of Dilwale but as above mentioned above its more about the better screens and the potential capacity built rather than number of screens.

    Q. Would it be better if Bajirao Mastaani released on Christmas Day so it can get benefit of holiday and be a solo release?
Ans. Its not really important as its coming on 18th December. A week late would only benefit it if Dilwale does not work, if it works it will give competition like a new release and the window is shorter with a 25th release. Ideally it should be coming on Republic Day week.

We know that this Dilwale was safe at the box office right after DDLJ released. They made a ‘table profit’ on it right then. Do you forget that CE’s 1st day – Friday was a Eid holiday? You are comparing that with a working day(Dec 18) and also with another movie release. Screens can have max occupancy to even 30 crores but working day will never be as good as a holiday irrespective of the movie.

        • While its true that working day will not be as good as a holiday but considering the screens are not much (3000 is not much as a solo release would get 4500 screens) the occupancy will be very high. And I think in general ticket rates would be higher than what CE had 2 years back. So while 25 cr is possible it has to be the higher end of the estimate.

        • Bhansali is a headstrong person. He might still go ahead with a release like he did for Sawariya which was a bad movie. I am more inclined to think that SRK team is very confident of their product and they are okay to release it even in just 3000 screens and thereby for sure forego the opening week records but in return get an extra open week to run the movie.
There is more at stake for SRK here than Bhansali. If the movie is bad the clash will affect it and unlike any other average masala movie which still gets to 200 crores, this will not even touch 125 crores if the movie is not up to the mark. That’s the thing about clashes, people will quickly shift their loyalty to the other movie as they have options. So more than BM being a good movie, which it may be, I think Dilwale might be a very good movie however unlikely it sounds given Rohit;s track record..

  118. History Says There Is ONE Winner Or NO Winner In Clashes
    Thursday 10 December 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

A disappointing year can only end on a high if both of last two major releases Dilwale and Bajirao Mastaani become super hit films but recent history suggests that in a clash there can be only one winner or two under performers. Though it is made out that if films are not similar and different genres they can co exist but that is not the case.

The last time a clash gave out real super hit films was ages back in the day of staggered releases where despite releasing on the same day, one film would release in Mumbai and the other in North or vice versa, this even saw three super hit films coming together. The little exception was Dil v Ghayal in 1990 but even here the former had raced ahead in first six months though Ghayal more than made up in repeat runs as the Sunny Deol action image got stronger and stronger in the 90’s. If it was not for this only Dil would have been the blockbuster film.

Gadar v Lagaan in 2001 is another example normally used to show that two films can co-exist but here Lagaan was a loser in many circuits due to Gadar, it managed to survive due to super hit business in Mumbai and South but if it did not clash it would have become a major hit. This happened in the days of 300 screen releases when films could easily get the amount of screens needed which is not the case today when films are looking for 4000 screens.

In 2001, the perception was not through numbers so Lagaan got away with it due to media perception but today its totally different scenario and neither Dilwale or Bajirao Mastaani will want or rather can’t afford to be a Lagaan and loose the battle by a landslide as numbers will be there for all to see. In 2012 there was Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar where both under performed but numbers were respectable but with the costs involverd here respectable numbers won’t be enough.

Obviously its Dilwale that holds the upper hand, not just because of the star power but also because the director of Bajirao Mastaani makes films that only only do well (if they do well) in some parts of the country and when you clash this limited market becomes even smaller. The film will have tobe super strong in content to have any chance of recovery.

The issues for Dilwale are different as it has potential to put up some records and that is what is expected from these event films but the clash is sort of irritation as the way business is today only a solo release can only hope of record be it opening day, weekend or circuit records.

The likely scenario will be one real winner and one loser or two under performers though they can give the industry major hope that clashes can happen and go on to do 400 crore nett plus between them but that would be biggest surprise of the year and chances are slim.

Take some attention away from BM. BM is publicized as a lover story movie, now Dilwale has made the same point for itself.

I think one of this movie will tank very badly. Looks like both movies crux is love story. BM historicals and dilwale more of modern shetty type.

Would love to see SRK pair with Ajay at some time. Salman do that with Akshay and Aamir with any combo…..

Looking at how stylized R.Shetty has turned out to be……would be lively to see Salman do his action/stunt or a serious cop story in the mould of Garv….

        • I also feel this 90s gen which started this one movie / one schedule at a time will be the one which will take the system back to multiple movies/release. Once they loosen a bit ( not hung up on numbers and festive release ) , they will start doing 3/4 movies a year. SRK is already changing to that mould and once Big Boss stint is over Salman too will switch. Akki is already doing that…..

One must appreciate the hard work this gen has been putting for last 20-25 odd years and just the steadfastness / indefatigability needs to be applauded for the top 5.

BM should have aimed for Tamasha release date and would have reaped dividends with 3 open weeks if the movie was half good. Here the genre is troubling and clash with Dilwale cuts in majorly.
BM has to rely on Dilwale being obnoxious to do make a mark at the box office unless its a Bahubali kind of deal….

Varun is a free flowing actor and his screen time along with Kriti Sanon will turn out to be usp in the middle reels. We need a bindass on screen now ! Varun is already that big star of his generation. This year he has taken two films to safety / hit status just on his own stardom / followuing. Both Badlapur and the 100cr ABCD2. Not counting Humpty Sharma as that was part Alia / KJO.

On the other hand Ranbir has proven to be all hype and no substance…at least from box office viewpoint. Anurag Kashyap hired him to give visibility to his project and look what he did. I mean 24 cr lifetime is just shameful. Same thing with Imtiaz’s Rockstar and Tamasha.

Its been nearly 8/9 years and he is already on the beaten track by choosing to remain in his comfort zone: Soul-searching, coming-of-age movies like Wake Up Sid, Rockstar, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and now Tamasha. We saw how the audience reacted to him in a commercial masala movie like Besharam and epic period romance like Bombay Velvet. Just like Saif Ali Khan, the only safe path for him remains urban romantic comedies/love stories, but even those projects are risky if he’s going to continue charging what he does right now.

Lekhi’s insinuation left nothing to the imagination. As Khan did not respond to that Tweet, it is difficult to tell if the Enforcement Directorate had indeed provoked his outburst. (A few days later, Aamir Khan made a similar point and drew the ire of the lot that had trashed Khan.)

Lekhi at least got the sequence of events right: late in October, Khan was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate to its south Mumbai office.

Under its scanner are some overseas financial entities with links to Khan. Specifically, the Enforcement Directorate is examining if there were certain unrecorded transactions done through these entities.

To unravel Khan’s overseas business, one has to rewind to 10 years ago when Londoner Richard James Moore floated a real estate company called Winford Estates in Surrey.

In March 2007, he sold it to Raja Sherbaz Khan, a property dealer. Nine months later, Khan acquired control of this company when he bought its solitary share from the property dealer for an undisclosed amount.

Khan bought the share through Red Chillies International. Though mentioned in some records as a United Kingdom company, Red Chillies International is registered in Guernsey, a sparsely populated island in the English Channel.

Known for its light taxes and easy regulation, Guernsey is a hub for private equity funds and other investment vehicles, and earns much of its national income from their activities. Its people are still debating between independence and a dominion status under the British crown. Till then, it is a “dependency”.

      • **Agree, at age 50, he should do movies like Ajooba, Insaniyat, Hum, Akayla, etc like how Amitabh did :-)**

Of course, at that age, in the 1990s, Amitabh had the advantage of the presence of wonderful directors like/in the category of Shoojit, Kashyap, Dhulia, Bhansali, Hirani, Basu, etc., etc who actually knew what to do with him at that age. And he failed to utilize that. His fault entirely.

SRK, unfortunately, is/has been surrounded by mediocre directors from age 45 to 50. And even before, all that he had for ‘quality’ was KJO.

So yes, this is surely an apples to apples situation.

        Like

        • Oh please, there were plenty of good directors than too. But Amitabh wouldn’t work with them because it would hurt his superstar image.

Don’t tell me he couldn’t get Mahesh Bhatt, Gulzar, Shyam Benagal, Govind Nihlani, etc if he wanted them.

Amitabh had to be Amitabh including not even messing with his hair style too much.

By the way, these shoojit, kashyap, dhulia, bhansali are nowhere near what Mahesh Bhatt, gulzar, govind nihlani, benagal, etc were. So you’re right, it wouldn’t be apple to apple.

          Like

        • Once again you’re extremely poor on the history. Bachchan worked with every important director of the 70s and 80s. If it were only about the superstar image he wouldn’t have done probably the maximum number of films with Hrishikesh Mukherjee and then in every kind of part. The art cinema wave was a different thing. No commercial star really worked in this films. Mahesh Bhatt became someone significant relatively late in the 80s. Of course he too became a huge sellout in a matter of a few years for anyone who’s familiar with the history! Should Bachchan have perhaps take some chances and approached some of these alternative directors? Sure! But the industry was just going through a very bad phase and there just weren’t the talents for him to make that transition till the very late 80s/early 90s. When this happened he actually worked with them. Mukul Anand was considered one of the hottest talents then, he did three films with him.

On the rest this too is an ‘ahistorical’ argument. SRK has had the same hair throughout his career. A bit absurd to bring that up since he clearly is a commercial star! No commercial star anywhere in the world does anything different in this sense. Dilip Kumar had the same hair throughout his career! One could go on. but again you’re simply no aware of the history. what the important directors were, what they meant at the time, so on and so forth. In the 1990s Yashraj or Johar were considered cutting edge. Since then times have changed. Now if I say today that SRK had no prestige films in the 90s because he was just doing films with those guys and these days people laugh at many of those films that would be absurd. Because that wasn’t how it was in the 90s. Much as many of the films we like today might be laughed at in some years. Of course Bachchan’s films are classics that have been perennially relevant but that’s another matter. the point is one can’t make ahistorical arguments. What cinema means, how these things are perceived changes over time. And again there can be a constructive critique of Bachchan along many lines. I know because I’ve made it tons of times at length myself. But it can’t be about bad faith and it certainly can’t be bad without enough knowledge of the matter. I can question Lata for lots of career choices but if I questioned Alka Yagnik and someone started questioning Lata in turn that would be absurd. Because whatever Lata’s faults might or might not have been the two aren’t comparable figures. One has to be serious about these things. Again as long as one is not playing that sandbox game.

        • LOL, you are struggling even to name directors! You have resorted to Benegal and Nihalani who were pretty much relegated to bits and pieces. And even more sad is your attempt to put Nihalani and Benegal in the bracket of Shoojit or Dhulia! These guys were art-house film-makers, not multiplex film-makers. Even the poster-boy of art-films Naseer left them disgruntled that their films post 80s-end were meant for nobody – neither reaching the common man whom it supposedly champions nor the high-society folks who would use these films to brag about being a ‘different’ audience.

Do check-out Benegal and Nihalani’s ventures in the ’80s and then we can talk. Except TRIKAAL, MANDI, and Kalyug [way back in 1981], Benegal was relegated to television and documentaries, where he did flourish.

And big LOL at Mahesh Bhatt. History lessons needed here. Firstly, Mahesh Bhatt’s big mouth and Bachchan’s humility were never friends. They STILL do not want to work with each other. And post-NAAM, Mahesh Bhatt had sold his soul to the devil. Either he was busy copying Hollywood films and making trash or quite happy to let Aamir ghost-direct HHRPK.

And Gulzar was an on-off film-maker. Between ’90 and ’99, Gulzar made LEKIN, MAACHIS, and HU TU TU. Go figure.

      • Dilwale is supposed to be loosely based on the Hum plot. And seeing the trailer I don’t even find this implausible. Of course if Dilwale could do in today’s money what Hum did then SRK would be ecstatic. Around 1990-91 though Bachchan had a good time. His initial was of course intact but the films were disappointing later. But he had Agneepath and Hum with the same director. Hum created incredible hysteria. Aaj Ka Arjun in 1990 was one of the year’s biggest hits, this at the height of the Rath Yatra when everything else was biting the dust (including the Anil Kapoor-Madhuri starter Jamai Raja).

The point as always is that one can always play this game of ‘if you say anything about SRK I’ll say something about Bachchan’ but if one gets beyond this sandbox game of kids throwing sand at each other what gets revealed unfortunately is the very poor grasp people have on the history in these matters and you’re no exception here. It is bizarre to have one favorite star do a second film with someone like Rohit Shetty and to pass ‘quality’ judgments on anyone else! Beyond this even till he left for that 5 year sabbatical Bachchan had without doubt the greatest initial around. No one else was even close. yes even in that 1988-92 phase when he had a number of indifferent releases. This is why many of those films were still among the top grossers in those years. Of course the bahchcan standard was a different one and he should be judged by that. AS LONG AS one accepts that same standard everywhere else too. And if others say stuff about SRK, even if it’s unfair stuff so what? I don’t say things I don’t believe in or don’t mean just because someone attacks Bachchan. One can make one’s case without playing this game.

Ultimately all these things (as I’ve said for many years) are about larger historical anxieties. One can be a SRK fan. Comparing him to Bachchan in any sense is like comparing one planet or the other with the sun. This is not up for debate except by those who have no understanding of the history and/or are the sorts of partisans who create alternate realities for themselves. We see the same in politics so often and sometimes these strategies are even successful for a while. I also don’t agree with a lot of the stuff Bachchan fans say for different reasons nor do I think it’s necessary to attack SRK or anyone else in knee-jerk ways every time. The Bachchan case is not dependent on how well or not SRK is doing. In any case if one wanted to do even this it seems to me that Aamir or Salman in the present can be much more immediate references. But the larger point again is there must be a sense of honesty to these things. If someone is so much a partisan of Udit Narayan that he or she wants to question Kishore or someone such a person shouldn’t be argued against but ruthlessly dismissed! Certain things shouldn’t be up for debate. Similarly when people say certain things about Bachchan, whether it’s a negotiation (you do this and I do this) or it’s about some other anxiety or whatever, is scarcely important. The claim is still completely non-serious and ridiculous. I say all of this as someone who besides being a great Bachchan fan is also one of his strongest critics at many levels (including for some of his peak period) and on his very blog. So I don’t consider anyone or anything beyond criticism. But it should be serious. And it shouldn’t be about kids who otherwise follow their favorite stars film with such bated breath each time a new trailer arrives and do all kinds of analysis on it. Everyone has a right to be a fan, even the most intense sort of fan, but at some level one has to ask: when did you forget to grow up? If one’s entire psychological/emotional life is invested in hanging by a thread on the question of how much Dilwale is going to do and if one reexamines this question every single day and if one has done the same for years on other such films and so on one really loses the right to question anyone else. Even if they’re attacking SRK unfairly it’s not as if one’s ‘fanatical’ (I don’t mean this in an insulting sense) commitment to the same star is a model of honesty, seriousness, or even maturity.

Then again things could be even worse. One could be MSDhoni. So horribly confused about whether Salman did it or not! Or maybe not. SRK hasn’t run anyone over so far. I’m sure he too would get the benefit of the doubt.

  139. Dilwale – Shahrukh Khan Hottest Pre Release Film Since Om Shanti Om
    Tuesday 15 December 2015 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dilwale will release this week and is the hottest Shahrukh Khan film pre release since Om Shanti Om. It is very rare that the near perfect Hindi commercial film comes together for that killer initial. The cast, the music, the scale and the treatment seems perfect obviously content remains to be seen and that can only be judged after release.

The last films that you would put in this bracket were Dhoom 3 and Kick, the initials they took were extraordinary with the number first day number coming out depending on external factors. Dilwale is coming on a non holiday and is pretty certain, the opening would have been highest or second highest to Dhoom 3 for a non holiday (the brand value of Dhoom 3 could have been deciding factor) but for the external factors

The external factor for Dhoom 3 was a non holiday, for Kick it was non holiday and Pre-Eid and for Dilwale it is non holiday and competition in the form of a big budget film releasing on the same day. Dhoom 3 collected an insane 32 crore nett on day one, Kick was 25 crore nett apprx which may not look a big number but to do it four days before is Eid is humongous.

The external factors against Dilwale are far greater than Kick as competition means the potential to collect is less. The multiplex screenings will be around 35% less than Kick and Dhoom 3 as 40% of the screenings will go to Bajirao Mastani and 5% would be the growth of screens since those releases. The 60-40% share of multiplex screens is not certain yet as makers of Bajirao Mastaani are asking for a bigger share as they also have a big budget film.

This is the reason that the advance of Bajirao Mastaani did not open on Monday while Dilwale advance opened on one screen at multiplexes to a very fast response. It remains to be seen over the next few days if multiplexes stick to the 60-40 share or does Bajirao Mastaani manage to push multiplexes for more screens.

The opening of Dilwale is going to be huge in terms of occupancy but the clash will hurt initially and possibly a number 30-35% lower than it would be if it was a solo release as you can only collect in accordance to what is available. If you don’t open you don’t get hurt much because 30% occupancy on the missing screens are not a lot but 60-70% occupancy on the missing screens is a huge chunk of business and Dilwale is in the later as it is a certainty to open big.

The recovery is not an issue for the film as it is already safe with Shahrukh Khan as producer. The task is to get a big final number despite the clash.

    • Surprised at how low the screen count of Dilwale is! I thought SRK would do some more arm twisting but he is getting 35% less than D3/Kick! To score big its gonna have to trend exteremly well. Actually I think it has even less screens than CE..to even match CE’s opening week/weekend it has to do really well. This weekend will be really interesting. I don’t think BM will open that well but I think its just a waste of screens by giving it to them

      • CE release in 3600 screens and this is releasing in 3000 screens. So there is no chance it can do CE weekend numbers. The best case opening day will be 25 cr. The movie will clock high occupancy on day 1. BM will be sitting on lot of screens with unused capacities. If D is good then it will lose to the tune of 35 cr just in the first 3 days itself due to the clash. As I said earlier either these movies are very good or producers are being plain stupid

        • Dilwale was the perfect time and film for SRK to create records but looks like BM is the party spoiler here. Now, it will be years again till he has another movie like Dilwale and its hype. Lost opportunity!

There is no way it will get to 25 crore.

I think the most it can do it 20 crore. Keep in mind that 25 corre would be about the max it can do on 3,000 screens but now add an option where the audience has choice to watch something else if they want to, so not just 3,000 screens but than going up another big film will dent the collection.

I don’t think many here realize why Bhansali is so confident. He probably has a good film and on top it he has an advantage of having as much as 90% single screens booked.

How much did Once upon a time dobara make on first day despite being a bad product and going up against CE (granted CE was already 5 to 6 days old).

The point is when you have a film releasing on about 2500 to 3000 screen it will make an impact.

Only thing that will help Dilwale initially is SRK and his promotion strategy and after 5 to 6 days, it will depend on how good the film is.

        • The movie is having the best advance this year, expect full occupancies and a figure closer to 25 cr on Day 1. But that has to be the ceiling

        • After some reliable information on advance bookings from distributors, I feel Day 1 estimate will be between 25 to 27 cr which will be awesome on 3000 screens….The single screen response is huge though In Mumbai and Delhi big single screens have gone to BM but in rest of India D has got the better single screens

        • Needless to say content will take over from Day 2 but this distributor who has seen the movie is super confident.

        • Confirmation on what I said about single screens from a distributor. The few territories where BM has got bigger screens are Mumbai and Delhi

#Dilwale has got more SS then #BM all over india except few territories. I hope its clear to all of u. BM getting 90% S screen’s is a myth

    • so to take care of record ๐Ÿ™‚ inspite of lower screen count-they jacked up US ticket prices to 20$ for Thu, Fri shows –!! last such steep price was seen only for Bahubali…check out amc in GA pricing for Thu, Fri shows https://goo.gl/eGmhWW

Also interesting to see Regal cinemas not showing this which is kind of strange…

Oh so these a!@#holes also started this business. Till now I was quite happy that Hindi movies didn’t resort to the ugly stuff that Tamil and Telugu movies did. I have to stay away from these movies too. [I was never going to watch this one anyhow].

And who better than SRK’s movie to start this ugliness! Now ALL will follow suit. Because Hi-fi is so original..

        • crap, right after posting I checked the Manchester CT theatre and they have it listed at $20. What a rip off.

Well, not paying that much for one movie.

        • okay, it’s just the Thursday show which is $20. Friday to Sunday is $11 for late show. early shows prior to 6pm are $8

        • yeah i guess $20 bucks is the Thursday night “special” everywhere. probably will avoid it this weekend and wait for next weekend…unless its really bad then will avoid the movie altogether.

        • On here, for the ‘special preview 2 shows’ on Thu are $20 prices and from Friday, its back to regular $12/show. Its like premiere night.. it won’t go full as its regular working day and again Friday is working day.

Actually this is not unusual.. even HNY, PRDP and other big releases had 1-2 preview shows on Thu evenings. For them once its release day in India, they can show in US at same time(late night show) and have been doing that for last couple of years.

  141. 20$ movie ticket is too much man. I have decided, I am going to watch it free. Both movies for one ticket on second weekend. This saturday, both movies will be running full so one ticket for 2 movies formula wont work in first weekend.
