  2. So here’s my first official prediction:

    Dilwale:

    Friday – 16 to 19 crore
    Saturday – 15 to 18 crore
    Sunday – 17 to 20 crore
    TOTAL – 48 to 57 crore

If the movie is really liked, it may be closer to 65 crore and if disliked it will be around 50, keeping in mind audience will have a chice of seeing another huge movie more easily accessible than Dilwale since Dilwale will get only 10% single screen in most places.

    BM:

    Friday – 15 to 17 crore
    Saturday – 14 to 16 crore
    Sunday – 15 to 17 crore
    TOTAL – 44 to 50 crore

Has huge benefit of getting 90% of single screens in most places. It’s success will depend more on out come of Dilwale.

    Final Total:

Dilwale – 175 crore if liked a lot
Dilwale – 125 crore if not liked
BM – 150 crore if liked a lot
BM – 90 crore if not liked

So if both movies are liked a lot it will collect around 325 crore combined which is around what PK and Bajrangi did.

I hope both movies are liked a lot and does well at boxoffice. It will give us true indication of what can happen when 2 liked movies are released at same time but the implication is due to releasing at the same time.

    • It depends which film will be liked more. A contemporary love story will have all India audience while a historical will have limited appeal and that too when there is big competition. West Bengal is SRK’s stronghold apart from his all India appeal. First choice will be Dilwale.

    • your predictions are too low. just on basis of advance tickets sold so far it will do 16 crores on Day 1. Expect a 25 to 27 cr Day 1

      • And that single screen thing is a big myth. Except Delhi and Mumbai, Dilwale has got the better single screens in all other territories. I had posted it in the other thread also.

        • Mumbai / Delhi, the multiplex scene works better as crowd is loaded and couple of bucks do not make much difference to the outing. For for other parts of India there is still cash crunch and tickets above Rs 100 become an issue.

        • I will have to tip my hat off to SRK for being smart businessmen if he pulls this thru.

Maybe he and his business team had all this figured out in advance, how many single screens they’ll get, which ones they’ll get and than he partnered with the PVR cinemas to take more screens in multiplex, etc…

          Like

        • I said they have got the bigger single screens , that doesn’t mean D hasn’t got any single screens in these territories. For example Gujarat is all Dilwale. The ratio of single screens in these territories is around 60-40 in favor of BM. In other territories it is 80-20 to Dilwale.
One more thing, your prediction says BM will collect around 70% occupancy on 2000 screens to get to 16 cr and D will do around 65% occupancy on 3000 screen to get to 17 crs. So basically you are saying SRK star power is lesser than the star cast of BM. Which even as a pure prediction doesn’t make sense.

Based on advance I can tell you the picture as of now D has already sold 50% + advance for Day 1. in Screens like Delite in Delhi even Monday is houseful as there are not enough screens unlike a Bhajrangi Bhaijaan and advance is spilling over to Monday. In Kolkata and South it has got bigger release than Bhajrangi Bhaijaan (inspite of competition) and advance is huge. Just on basis of advance tickets sold so far assuming no one books anything on current booking after today the movie will collect around 15 cr on Day 1.
Now the breaking news – BM advance has not opened at many many centres. Reason is Eros is still negotiating the sharing pattern in multiplexes. They want more than 50-50. The net advance sold for BM is less than 5%. In places it has opened, advance is very poor. So as of now BM is not looking at more than 5 cr Day 1. Obviously there will be a spill over effect and hence we are looking at a best case estimate of 7 to 8 cr Day 1 for BM and a 25 to 27 cr Day 1 for Dilwale.
No point in making a Day 2 prediction without seeing the merit of the movie. But I am sticking my neck out on these Day 1 numbers. You can hold me on Saturday for this 😉

      • Krish, advance is looking excelllent but it is just good. It opened only in one screen at most multiplxes and % wise, it looks extraordinary. On Thursday, it will open everywhere then you can see some shows sold out and many empty. Also, screens are divided that makes advance look better in terms of percentage. It is no a full fledge release like prdp. I think 20 cr prediction is more likely given couple of crores more or less.

        • That’s a fair point raghav. It’s true that in metro only 1 screen has been opened. But I think bulk bookings corporate bookings, further advance tomorroe and current booking will ensure excellent occupancies. Make no mistake despite all this tussle BM will release in 2000 screens and Dilwale will release in 1500 less screens than otherwise. So in this clash there is only one loser. Dilwale. The reason being BM will have unused capacity so the clash has not affected it at all. As I said before if Dilwale turns out to be a good movie it stands to lose 35 cr just in first weekend visavis other big releases.

    • 90% to 10% screen ratio is not true at all. Many exhibitors have clarified this on twitter. It is just some prominent single screens in mumbai and delhi. There also negotioation is going on and some are giving 2 shows to both the films.
If you see hyderabad and west bengal, situation is opposite. Dilwale has taken over 80% single screens all prominent ones, bm presence is negligible.
Also dilwale is leading in booking by margin die to the fact it opened booking on Sunday itself on one screen in multiplexes, while BM is yet to open. BM is still in negotion to get as many screens as possible. But, sofar dilwale is getting 0 to 30% more shows than BM. But none of the multiplex gave more shows to bm.
So, overall release is clearly gone in favor of dilwale.
And due to opening in advance on Sunday itself, dilwale is certain to open well in morning shows. Though, bm could struggle.

      My first day prediction-
BM -10 cr (if it really picks up in evenig show)
Amd if doesnt ,due to genre constraint or bad reviews, it can stay below 8cr that will spell doom for it.

Dilwale- 20 cr (if it dosnt get outright negative reviews, it can easily come up with this number with no support of reviews. Credit to he strategy of opening advance on sunday. )

On Saturday and Sunday, no prediction as both films will come in its own performing best to their ability. Dilwale will still lead by margin can be as multiple times of bm to Just a couple of crore difference in figures.

  3. It seems Salman superstardom has been leveraged in both cases !

An ego battle? ‘Dilwale’ vs ‘Bajirao Mastani’ clash gets dirty

Battle lines have been drawn, and it’s going to get intense. And dirty, perhaps. The upcoming ‘Dilwale’ versus ‘Bajirao Mastani’ clash has set off a tussle for single screen theatres, in what may appear as a repeat of the 2012 box office face-off involving Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ (‘JTHJ’) and Ajay Devgn’s ‘Son of Sardaar’.

When big-ticket projects take on each other, box office collections are as important as the number of screens. Devgn, at that time, had dragged Yash Raj Films (YRF) to court for allegedly misusing its dominance to deny enough single screen theatres to ‘Son of Sardaar’ — the film had released on nearly 500 screens less than ‘JTHJ’. According to sources, YRF had made a package deal — ‘armtwisting’ exhibitors into booking maximum theatres for ‘JTHJ’ in return of their Eid release ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ starring Salman Khan.

    Action replay
Now, a similar scenario has emerged in 2015’s year-end contest. Eros International, which released Salman’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, had apparently laid down a pre-condition before owners of single screen theatres owners — they had to screen ‘Bajirao Mastani’ too. In 2012, Eros had been at the receiving end with ‘Son of Sardaar’ losing out to ‘JTHJ’ in terms of screen count (and also box office collections). They are, at present, determined to have an upper hand over ‘Dilwale’ makers, claim sources.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “The theatre owners have no choice. They all signed an agreement before Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s release. Eros rightfully refuses to share timings. No exhibitor or Shah Rukh Khan had supported them (Eros) during ‘Son of Sardaar’.”

    • As the release date December 18 draws nearer, the battle between Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale to get more theatres intensifies.

At the moment, it seems Dilwale has wangled the larger number of screens.

According to the latest reports, Shah Rukh Khan has stuck a deal with a major all-India multiplex chain which has consented to allot more screens to his film, Dilwale.

This development puts Bajirao Mastani at a disadvantage.

Says a source close to the development: “The ratio of screens for Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani is 60:40. It was not that way until recently. Eros International, the co-producers of Bajirao Mastani, had booked a majority of screens six months in advance. That was when the Dilwale release date was not announced.”

According to this source, director Rohit Shetty was opposed to the idea of releasing his film on the same day as Bajirao.

“Rohit wanted Dilwale to be released on December 25 but Shah Rukh was adamant on December 18. He was sure he would get more screens for his film, and he managed that by taking the owners of a leading multiplex chain into confidence,” says the source.

      According to rediff movies.

  4. This clash becomes a test for SRK and the star power but looking at general consensus , I feel he is fine here and will once again come out trumps. If HNY had not preceded this , the hype of Dilwale would be at another level due to Kajol.

BM gains by the clash buzz but loses due to clash so it is even- steven for them. It also tests Deepika’s star power.

Clash outcome will decide if future panga with Khans is worth the trouble or better to steer clear.

  8. Bajirao Mastaani To Find It Tough At The Box Office
    Wednesday 16 December 2015 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bajirao Mastaani will find it a tough struggle at the box office for two reasons, The first being its a clash against a big film and the second being a weak director who normally finds regional success which will not do with this huge budget. This regional success becomes an even bigger issue with a clash. Below are the ratios for Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed films for Mumbai circuit.

    Khamoshi – 38.02%
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam – 46.86%
    Devdas – 31.27%
    Black – 41.45%
    Saawariya – 44.92%
    Guzaarish – 40.16%
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram – Leela – 43.62%

All the films be it success or failure are lopsided in Mumbai circuit barring Devdas which has a normal ratio and that was due to the presence of Shahrukh Khan. There will be around 100 crore up for a grabs in Mumbai circuit for both films and even if Bajirao Mastaani does excellent and takes half of it, the normal 42.5% ratio of Sanjay Leela Bhansali films will mean a little over 100 crore nett business but that is with a 50/50 result in Mumbai, the numbers will be scary if the circuit goes in the favour of Dilwale. The result Bajirao Mastaani will really need is to beat Dilwale at least 60/40.

The pluses for Bajirao Mastaani are that there is a lot of hype with the clash in the media and this may have created more awareness for the film than had it come alone. So despite the content holding little interest in places like Delhi / UP, East Punjab and West Bengal initially, maybe awareness could help bring in respectable footfalls in these areas.

Another plus is basically by default as the film will not get the huge release in terms of multiplex screens and a smaller release can sometimes work in favor of films which are regional or more niche in content especially if word of mouth strikes.

The third is that it did pre book the better single screens with Bajrangi Bhaijaan in Delhi / UP and Maharashtra and this should help especially in Maharashtra. In Delhi / UP it will be less effective as the directors films barring Devdas have never worked in Delhi / UP. In fact in UP, all have been big duds outside Devdas.

The film should manage to do well in Maharashtra, CP Berar and Marathawada side of Nizam though it is Gujarat that will be deciding factor for the film, if Dilwale goes the way all Rohit Shetty films go in Gujarat then the writing will be on the wall for Bajirao Mastaani as Mumbai circuit will not be up to the mark and with Gujarat not performing, its very unlikely that other areas can come to the rescue.

  11. Move over Khans, here’s why Akshay Kumar is the star of 2015

It was Salman Khan, ever honest and not the least insecure about his rivals, who declared that among all his contemporaries Akshay Kumar has evolved the most.
Akshay Kumar is today the most watchable A-list star-actor in Bollywood. Unlike Shah Rukh and Salman Khan who, so far, have largely played variations of their own personality in their characters, Akshay has, over the years, developed an uncanny ability to create believable charismatic heroes who are not afraid to show their weaknesses in front of the camera.
In his latest film Airlift directed by a near-newcomer Raja Krishna Menon, we see Akshay break down and cry bitterly as Kuwait goes up in flames after Saddam Hussain’s attack in 1990. In that one moment, he encompasses all the vulnerability that makes him a modern-day hero without losing any of the inner strength and outer machismo that make him so connectable with audiences from every section.
Akshay in person remains remarkably unaffected by his stardom. He has evolved, yes. But he hasn’t changed. This author has known him for 16 years, and he remains exactly the same person he used to be when he was just about transitioning from wooden to pliable in Suneel Darshan’s Jaanwar.

This determination to not forfeit his antecedents is a miracle in show business, where on the one hand Kapil Sharma and Nawazuddin have almost transform into starry monsters in no time.
Akshay never speaks ill of anyone. He never badmouths any of his colleagues, although we are close enough for him to do so without the risk of being exposed in the media. If being correct in his behavior makes him boring so be it. He would rather be described dull than evil.
Akshay’s choice of roles is impeccably versatile and he lets his work do the talking. In 2015, we saw him in four films. While two of them Gabbar Is Back and Singh Is Bling were masala entertainers designed to showcase Akshay’s comic aptitudes, in Karan Malhotra’s Brothers he was a brooding ball of fire, trying to fight the ghosts of a terribly dysfunctional familial past.
But the film in 2015 that really showcased Akshay’s rapidly growing virtuosity was Baby; an unassuming spy thriller directed by the versatile Neeraj Pandey. The film dealt with issue surrounding international terrorism, and it was coupled with a supple swagger that very few mass-entertainment films have been able to achieve in recent times. It’s an awards worthy performance because the actor nails his counter-terrorist hero’s role without attempting to scale larger-than-life dimensions in the way Saif Ali Khan did in Phantom.

To be able to harness the inner hero in himself and yet remain vulnerable is a not an easy task for any actor. Akshay achieves a rare synthesis of vulnerability and valour in his performances. In real life he remains a family man . His pride at his wife Twinkle’s success as a columnist and author is genuine. He sportingly allows his wife to bully him in public. But he knows when to assert himself without seeming a spousal tyrant. He is happiest when bonding with his two children Aarav and Nitara and the saddest when he has to work on a Sunday. Pretty regular stuff.
For a guy from Delhi who made a living as waiter in Bangkok, Akshay landed in Bollywood with no calling card. He was ridiculed for being wooden and flat-voiced by one and all but he’s now arguably the most fit-and-fine star-actor of Bollywood.
Akshay loves to work with new directors. Raja Krishna Menon, who directs his latest film has to his credit only a small film titled Barah Aana. In Menon, Akshay sees a reflection of his struggling days when he arrived in Mumbai with nothing but a suitcase filled with dreams.
Along with Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay proves that the film industry can rise above clannish interests, provided the outsider is willing to slog it out until his makeover from a wannabe to a has-to-be is complete.

  13. Single Screens Breach Bajirao Contract For Dilwale, Face Court Hearing Tomorrow

    Vickey Lalwani | 16 Dec 2015 10:33 PM

It’s tough to ignore Shah Rukh Khan. Many single screen owners have realised this after the public came scurrying to their ticket windows, saying they would be unfair to their patrons if they screen only Bajirao Mastani and not Dilwale from December 18.

Tomorrow, however, they might have to eat humble pie in Bombay High Court for giving in to the demand.

9xe has it that Bajirao Mastani producer Sunil Lulla of Eros has sent out a legal notice to all such screens and even promptly filed a case in Bombay High Court. The hearing is slated for tomorrow at 4.30 pm.

For those who’ve come in late, Eros had booked a large number of single screens from December 18 onward in Bombay Circuit, Delhi, Rajasthan and many other places in India, imposing a condition that they’ll not screen any other film except their Bajirao Mastani for at least a week. The studio had a whiff of Dilwale hitting the screens on the same day as their project in May itself. So they had a simple bait- Tanu Weds Manu Returns. They distributed the sequel across single screens on the condition that the theatres would screen only Bajirao Mastani when it releases (Shah Rukh Vs Deepika War Gets Nastier, Sep 23).

So which single screen owners have been called at Bombay High Court for violating the contract? A source says, “This morning, Rahul Aksar (who is also a distributor of Dilwale) opened the advance booking of the SRK starrer in his Churchgate theatre Eros. Inder Raj Kapoor did the same in his theatre Excelsior. A few others like Vinay Choksi (Gaiety, Galaxy) were about to follow suit. News reached Lulla, who swung into action to safeguard his interests. Lulla did no wrong because Aksar and Kapoor have at least 300 single screens between them in Bombay Circuit. If they are allowed to get away, many other players will also jump onto the bandwagon.”

So, where do Aksar, Kapoor & Co go from here? Says the source, “These guys will fight the case based on the loopholes, if any, in the contract. If they lose the case, they will have no option but to release only Bajirao in all four shows.”

The contract was violated simply because single screen owners have developed cold feet over releasing only Bajirao. Reveals the source, “If Dilwale does well and Bajirao does not, they would stand to lose a lot of money. That’s their worry. And who wouldn’t like to safeguard his business interests?”

A leading exhibitor (on request of anonymity) adds, “Tomorrow’s Bombay High Court verdict will play a substantial role in the collections of both films. This heady clash is getting interesting by the minute.”

WOW, so how many single screens are there in Bombay Circuit alone?

You guys still think that Dilwale is not losing out anything by getting only 10% of the low level single screens in Mumbai?

The single screen story wouldn’t be all over social media if there was nothing to it.

It’s a huge advantage for BM and that is the reason why Bhansali is clashing with Dilwale.

      • It’s a fair point, many of the best single screens exist in Mumbai but I honestly get the feeling that you are out to prove that Dilwale can’t ‘do this much’ at the box office because of reason X, Y and Z, almost like you’re getting your reasons ready if the box office collection isn’t up to scratch!
The single screen issue is not as big as being made out, it’s common practice for distributors to pre-book screens, but yes not screening Dilwale will impact single screen owners as clearly it’s the bigger film. The damage to Dilwale will be significant in the sense that it is Mumbai, one of the best areas for business. However, if Dilwale is a good film it will get its rewards! In many places I’ve seen (outside Mumbai admittedly) it’s got ALOT more shows compared to BM, in fact in some locations you wouldn’t even know BM was clashing with it! BM is clearly the underdog in terms of appeal, interest etc and it reflects in the number of shows!

“almost like you’re getting your reasons ready if the box office collection isn’t up to scratch”

Not at all, but don’t expect it do same as what HNY did on day one with 1,500 less screens and with another big movie clashing with it.

Single screen issue for Dilwale is not just limited to Mumbai, same in Delhi, Rajashthan and another circuit.

If Dilwale is a good film, the reward will come in 2nd week.

        • I don’t think anyone is expecting it to top or even get close to the HNY opening day. My take is 20-25 crore. But all those records aren’t important, they’re broken almost every 8-10 months! What’s important as always is lifetime collection, I just think if Dilwale is a good film and it holds even some credibility with the moviegoing audience it will get to the 230-240 crore lifetime mark which is where I feel its aim is, regardless of the single screen issue. There’s enough screens for Dilwale in the areas where it is ‘losing out’, it’s got a 60:40 ratio in Mumbai and Delhi single screen and then there is alot more shows in the multiplexes too when compared to BM which is the case almost all over the country! !he bigger issue for it is that BM is their breathing down its neck, so the pressure is on it to be a good film!
What’s fair to say is that maybe the lifetime collection may have been higher without the clash, but again that also depends on how good the film is.

          Like

        • If the reviews are good and great then collections will not be much impacted and it will cover it in 2nd and 3rd week(CE faced this) but if the reviews are not good and little negative then the impact is huge( JTHJ faced this) but folks very conveniently forget the clashes when they bring up these movie’s collections.. like JTHT did just 125 crs or so(completely forgetting that SOS also did same along with it).

Similarly.. assume Dilwale has Ra.One type reviews and then there is clash.. with a weekend of 75crs, it can still wrap up at 125 crores. Competition is not good for movies with bad reviews but it won’t impact good movies(maybe marginally) but then no one is expecting Rohit Shetty movies to have 3I/PK kind of WOM. So with average WOM, it would do at max 200 crore which will look mortal with all the big movie collections few years down the line. No one remembers the competition later on.

  15. Bajirao Mastani Review –

Here are some exclusive details about the film trial that happened on Tuesday night
Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s Bajirao Mastani is releasing on December 18. Tuesday night a select few members from the cast and crew along with friends of Sanjay Leela Bhansali watched the film. Here are some exclusive details about some of the best moments from the much awaited film:

    – This is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s BEST looking film. Every frame is filled with color, light, and the set decor and costumes are spectacular. The scene that stands out is Bajirao’s coronation scene where he sits on the throne for the first time. It will stay with you even after the film ends.

    – The songs are a very important part of the storyline. Even though Pinga didn’t catch on and become a rage like Dola re Dola, it comes in the film at a very important junction and changes the flow of the storyline. Albela Sajan is the most beautifully shot song in the film.

    – Apart from the main leads – Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, there are some noteworthy performances from Milind Soman, Mahesh Manjrekar and other actors who plays some important parts.

    – The battle scenes have been choreographed on a GRAND scale and the visuals and CGI work is remarkable.

    – Priyanka Chopra’s Kashibai act will go down as one of her best performances till date. Even though she doesn’t have as much screen time as Mastani, her character is extremely pivotal and important to the film. Priyanka not only looks like a dream but has put full effort to play the part with conviction. Her traditional scenes where she speaks Marathi and does some rituals are cute.

    – Ranveer and Deepika’s chemistry in Bajirao Mastani makes Ram Leela look like kindergarten. Everyone in the theatre has hugged Ranveer after the screening and he was teary eyed after

    • Dont worry…Dilwale has thursday preview tickets for $20, bm has no previews on thursday. And It has got all big capacity screens.
But, BM has managed to get wider release in u.s. for sure. SRK bo power has been continuously diminishing in usa for last 6 years. It is just reflection on that. His best is still u.k., gulf and pakistan.

        • Balance out? I don’t think anyone is worried about balancing out. No one even thought BM would have been competition to D in US but looks like something’s happening differently. So, barely managing to equal BM’s screens is not an achievement for Dilwale and balance it out. It should have been 70-30..based on the popularity.

Only 2-3 theatres had some shows housefull for Dilwale on the other hand. I don’t know where the talk of bumper opening is coming from. Maybe because Dilwale has double the shows of BM all over Delhi so this difference arises.

If reports are to be believed, things are not going good between the couple and their paradise that was once filled with unconditional love is now rusted with differences and incompatibility issues.

It all began when Ranbir started getting close to his ex girlfriend Deepika while shooting for their last release ‘Tamasha’. But, what added fuel to the fire was the huge promotional campaign; that was yet another major reasons behind the growing proximity between the ex-flames which in turn bothered the British beauty Kat.

A source close to the couple was quoted by a website, “It is not working out between them. They have had differences ever since Ranbir went on a major publicity drive with Deepika Padukone for Tamasha.” [sic]

Well, that’s a sad news for all the RanKat fans who were eagerly waiting to witness the couple tying the holy knot in the coming year. But, now with thing turning up in this manner it’s surely not possible to consider that the couple might walk the aisle.

However, if we look at Ranveer- Deepika’s castle; then we can surely say that love is in the air for this sizzling couple. They are going strong as ever by being there for each other. Also, whenever the pair is out together at various public events; their cute love and concern is visibly clear to all the spectators.

  24. New Delhi: The acquittal of actor Salman Khan in the Mumbai hit-and-run case today echoed in the Lok Sabha with questions being raised as to who was responsible for the death of a man sleeping on a pavement if the superstar was not driving the car.

Ruling NDA members Vinayak Raut (Shiv Sena) and Kirti Azad (BJP) raised the Salman Khan judgement during the debate on setting up of benches of commercial courts.

Azad, in a tongue-in-cheek comment, asked whether it was a ‘deer’ who was driving.

“The legal system is such that after 12 years Salman Khan has been acquitted. But the question is that on that night when the accident took place, someone died, so who is responsible for it? Who did it?,” Raut said.
He claimed none tried to find out who killed the poor man. “It should not be a system where a death is left unanswered after the acquittal of Salman Khan,” he said.

“When justice is given to someone, the job to trace the real culprit should be of the Judiciary and police department.

This change in the system is necessary,” Raut said. Azad said, “You are a good lawyer if you know the law. You are a great lawyer, if you know the judge.”

In an apparent reference to Salman’s trial in connection with killing of a black buck in Rajasthan, the BJP member said, “Today we are seeing cases where a person is jailed for killing a deer, but someone who runs over a person is let free. This is how judicial system is.”

Insisting that he was not criticising anyone, especially any judge, Azad said he was talking only of the judgement.

“One poor person died. Now, it is not known who was driving the car. Perhaps it was the deer who was driving,” he said, adding there was a need for improvement in the judicial system and efficiencies have to be brought in.

  26. Q. Ram Leela did 100 crore nett business so is it not realistic to expect 150 crore nett from Bajirao Mastaani as it looks a much bigger film

Ans. If only box office worked like that. There is a difference of 50 between 100 and 150 which is not a small amount. The big difference is Bajirao Mastaani is not a solo release and even in terms of star pull Ram Leela was ahead as the main star Deepika Padukone was coming off Chennai Express which was a huge hit but more importantly a very popular performance. This time its Piku and Tamasha, the former is actaully a hit but hardly matters in terms of star value as just 75 lakh people watched it theatres and then flopped on television. The fate of Tamasha is even worse.

    Q. Is there a chance of Dilwale crossing the 300 crore mark?

Ans. Uou never say never but will be very tough if not impossible. When its a clash of two big films then the first objective is to come out on top preferably by a good margin and then you can aim at benchmarks and the first would be 200 crore nett as that number is hardly achieved. 300 is a long way off.

I think the surprise will be BM, it’s carrying great report and booking of it is looking very good. So it won’t be like D opens at 30 crore and BM at 10. It will be closer to my prediction I had listed initially.

    Dilwale:
Friday – 16 to 19 crore (revising to 23 crore if Komal tweet is true)

    BM:
Friday – 15 to 17 crore (revising it to 16 crore if Komal tweet is true)

    • I think BM will do a bit more than 7 cr as advance has improved a bit. But it has still opened advance only in a few theatres so it us very tricky to predict the day 1 here. It is looking a 9 to10 cr deal now. Dilwale is still primed for a 25 plus total. The court case has gone their way so they get a few more single screens now but it is still 1500 theatres less than any biggie. Coming to reviews it looks like this might end up being rohits best reviewed movie which isn’t saying a lot.

Agree, when you lose 1,500 screens, no matter how you calculate it, it’s a loss of 10 crore easily. Now add to it that audience has a choice of another big movie which is actually getting very positive reviews.

It’s a loss/loss situation for both films unless one of the film tanks big time.

Right, everybody in India outside of Maharashtra have read and understood deeply the contribution of Marathas and Peshwas. What a joke.

I hope someone has read the book before commenting on his statement.

It’s a fact that people wait for films rather than read books in today’s age. Reading, as a habit as gone down drastically everywhere and in America [America at least has the advantage that there is one single language uniting all]. If you want to understand the contribution of regional players, you better read it in the vernacular. Otherwise, you will only learn the MARXIST version of history.

How many were aware of Bajirao’s story before this movie became news? So KRK should have read a Marathi book? RAU is the Marathi book it is based on.

          Bajirao’s is a historical character — not child-fantasy.

    Movie Review: Dilwale
BY ARNAB MUKHERJEE Thursday, 17 December 2015
    DIRECTOR: Rohit Shetty
STARRING: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon
    RATING: 3.5 stars

In 2004, Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment produced a tale of two (step)-brothers, Main Hoon Naa. After a decade, it tells another story of two brothers, but with a twist that is likely to leave you startled.
Such a hyped film needs more than best cinematic minds to please the fans, and that is where Dilwale scores. It is a perfect concoction of romance, action and comedy that Hindi film viewers generally look forward to. Even though it does not have the engaging storyline of Om Shanti Om, it is just about as, or even more entertaining, than Happy New Year.
In the past interviews, Rohit and SRK have hinted that they want to remake a musical romantic comedy from the 1950s and a masala drama from the ’90s. Dilwale is a bit of both. The story is straightforward. Varun Dhawan’s Veer meets Ishita (Kriti Sanon), and they fall in love, like all good couples of B-town must. The problems begin to surface when SRK’s past begins to impinge on the couple. There is a twist right before the interval that will leave you glued to the seat. Full dhamaka, I say.
Performances make the film imminently watchable. SRK, as Raj, does what he does best — romances his leading lady with ease, beats the hell out of his rivals while playing the ideal brother to Varun. Of course, how can there be another Dilwale sans the leading lady of the original? Kajol, as effortlessly spontaneous as ever, has a relatively shorter role than what you would have expected. Varun Dhawan’s comic timing will make you sit back and take note. Kriti Sanon does a reasonably good job of her role. The other members of the cast are all armed with funny scenes and dialogues. One of the best things about the film is that all the other characters are fleshed out to keep the comic element up. It may sound a little audacious but Rohit Shetty’s favourite Sanjay Mishra, who plays a buyer of stolen goods, is even funnier than the amazing Johnny Lever.
The music does justice to the ethos of the film. The songs are well-paced, except for Daayre, and contribute to strengthening the romantic quotient of the film. The background music is haunting and somehow reminded me of the Om Shanti Om theme. The soulful music is complemented by the breathtaking locales. The film is (obviously) set in Goa, Rohit Shetty’s favourite destination, and Bulgaria. The latter, alongwith Iceland where the song Gerua is shot, gives you some awe-inspiring visuals on the big screen.
Moments make for great memories in a Rohit Shetty film, and so some scenes deserve a special mention. The five-minute speed dating between Shah Rukh and Kajol is interesting, while the one where Mukesh Rishi and Pankaj Tripathy narrate the Shah Rukh-Kajol back story is deeply engaging.
If entertainment is why you go to the theatres, then Dilwale will not disappoint you. The ending, however, is likely to receive applause only from the die-hard SRK fans. In all, it is a great family film with a comical spin on the timeless, Romeo-Julietesque love stories. Watch Dilwale, you won’t regret!

  51. Movie Review: Bajirao Mastani
    DIRECTOR: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
STARRING: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra

    RATING: Read 🙂

Finding nuance in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film is like finding poor people in a Karan Johar film.

If OTT had a human form, it would sport a beard, glasses and would be spelled as SLB.
From palatial sets, detailed costumes, spellbinding cinematography, the film is so opulent it might as well be called Bhansali Mastani.
Bajirao is an ambitious warrior. And we believe it too because we are told in a did-you-know-the-fact-that he is the only warrior in the country who has won 40 battles back to back. Woah yeh warrior hain ya battlefield ka blockbuster Salman Khan?!!
He is so ambitious that he wants to dethrone the Mughals from Delhi and rule the entire country. But that can wait. Because he is busy cosying up with his wife first, then his girlfriend, then make babies with the wife and then girlfriend!! Lucky bugger, I know. It’s a choice between high libido and valour, and with Deepika and Priyanka around, it’s quite an obvious choice.
So all the events and dialoguebaazi that should have led to an attack on the Mughal Empire is conveniently forgotten and we witness his relationship status change from being married to married again, to complicated, and all this painfully stretched over a period of time. I could almost see his invisible Facebook updates; Mastani is hot, feeling excited. Kashi is my wife, feeling dutiful. Mom is against inter-religious marriage. She is so intolerant. Feeling frustrated.
The film is smart, gimmicky. The script is manipulative. So is the timing. To release a love story torn in a religion tussle will work keeping the current situation in our country. The scenes are written knowing they will earn a thundering applause here, a tear and a smile there. But it all works. The scenes between the husband and wife, the son and the mother and even the wife and the mistress have interesting wordplay and no matter how filmy, they do evoke emotions. In a scene Bajirao uses, doobta sooraj, khilta chand, dharam ki zanjeer and mohabbat ki aag, all in a sentence. But Ranveer Singh lends so much honesty and meaning to these dramatic words that it works. Also, we have heard worse in Bhansali’s Ram Leela. Remember jigar forcibly rhymed with trigger in name of creative writing?!
Ranveer Singh does deliver a fine performance. He speaks in a certain Marathi accent and he is consistent at it. Priyanka Chopra shines in a couple of scenes. And Deepika Padukone proves herself yet again. She is so gorgeous yaar. Gorgeous with that nose pin, that hat, that mandolin. Gorgeous when she holds her baby and fights all those soldiers singlehandedly. I almost stood on my seat and screamed, ‘Maar Mastaani Maar!’ Okay, calm down Lokesh. I get distracted. And then there is Tanvi Azmi. Spectacular.
The film is a good one-time watch. The first half had me strapped to my seats. It was well paced. The second half got way too weepy and self-indulgent. Also the film shows two sons born roughly around the same time grow at different paces. One of them grows into a teenager sporting a muchchi while the other one is barely reaching his mom’s knees. Complan boy, we wonder?!
If you gush calling Bhansali an artist, his movies oh-so-beautiful, sheer poetry and all that, then Bajirao Mastani won’t disappoint!

    • Bajirao Mastani
Rating 4.0 by Shefali Saxena (Mj)

Verdict – SLB ne audience se mohabbat ki hai, aiyyashi nahi!

I don’t know where to begin this review because everything about Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s labour of love – Bajirao Mastani was bloody brilliant!
Frankly, Indians have definitely not seen something like this before. Par excellence special effects with outstanding background score and music make Bajirao a sure shot winner!
      Plot
Bajirao, who has won countless battles in life, loses his heart to the warrior princess of Bundelkhand. Interestingly, he’s already married to Kashibai who is an exceptionally strong woman (quite likely of Marathi women). The story however is about the battle of life that we fight with our loved ones and not those on battlefields.
      Art Direction
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the baap of grand sets in Indian Cinema. I don’t remember watching any movie which has swept me off my feet in every frame because the whole movie looks like a picturesque voyage. Every frame and believe me I’m not exaggerating is breath taking!
From the jhoomar to the bleeding eyes of Bajirao, this film has set a new milestone in Hindi cinema. And I don’t see anyone beating that anytime soon. Not even Aashutosh Gowarikar who is tried his hands at making period films.

      Performances
Deepika Padukone is the best Mastani which SLB could get. Even Aishwarya Rai couldn’t have delivered such a fearless performance with blazing eyes like her! With this she reinstates that she is the reigning queen of Hindi Film industry right now. You just can’t tell where to look during the Deewani Mastani song because grand is an understatement for the sets and Deepika. Her dance not only in this song but Kathak in Rang de mohe Lal is exceptional.
Priyanka Chopra shines as Kashibai, a very valiant character which she plays with the right amount of valid cynicism that a married woman goes through if her man loves another woman.
Ranveer Singh can prepare his award winning speeches for this season as the best actor as the blazing Bajirao. This man’s talent has been amazingly trapped by SLB. He infuses the right amount of energy in every scene with his wit and arrogance. I bow down to him.
Tanvi Aazmi as his Maa Saheb is outstanding. A special mention for Milind Soman who gives the right intensity to all the scenes with Ranveer and the little Shamsher Bahadur (Mastani and Bajirao’s son) who will make you go aww with his breathtaking dialogue delivery as a toddler.

      Music and Costumes
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the God of music for such films and only he can do this. He’s stuck the right chords for both marathi, devotional and soulful music. Anju Modi should better start designing clothes for lay people or else women will have to burn their pockets for a gazillion years.

      Conclusion
There’s no reason why you shouldn’t watch Bajirao Mastani. The story, screenplay, music, humour, grandeur and the stars are worth not one but two visits to the theatre.
Mohabbat ka koi Mazhab Nahi hota, mohabbat khud mein ek Mazhab hai. SLB ne audience se mohabbat ki hai, aiyyashi Nahi!

    • Ram Madhvani is one of the most talented directors who have been trying to make his proper debut film from last 15 years. He directed a small movie( Boman Irani’s debut film) – Lets Talk and when Taare Zameen Pe was getting behind in schedule, Aamir Khan called him to do 2nd shift and he even directed 1 song in the movie.

Incidentally he was about to start movie with Kajol and it got cancelled on the launch day and if Kajol had begun shooting that movie, she would not done Dilwale. Since that movie got canned, Kajol went to do Dilwale and Ram got this Neerja movie. Good for both of them.

There is no single movie in last few years that i can declare myself proud srkian and thats the reason many srkians like z himself dont disclose themselves. Aamir is basking in the glory of iconic films and records, salman is making records and some appreciation as an actor here and there. But , srk is nothing to talk about, we are still stuck in ddlj age. We need to wake up and stir srk, he gave up so many good opportunities like RDB, munna bhai, 3i, Robot and many more. And he has been doing worst of masala movies and still records are no where near.
Until CE happened, srk was far behind of ranbeer kapor, but RK failure have put him back in top3 bracket. But, he wont survive like this for long, Now Ranveer singh has given amazing performance, what srk has left to talk about ? other than aging and haggard looks.
He better follow Akshay’s pattern who has started playing little older characters gracefully.

Starting from FAN, Rahul Dholakia’s Raees, Gauri Shinde’s next, Anand L Rai’s dwarf role and possibly Imtiaz Ali’s next. Those are the next 5 films and he even rejected Farah’s next and she is making possibly her next with Varun Dhawan.

  54. Dilwale Movie Review by Taran Adarsh (4/5)

The pre-Christmas week has finally arrived. The best is always reserved for the last and it has been a tradition to have at least one biggie unfurl in the Christmas week, before the curtains fall on the on-going year. 2015 has been an erratic and inconsistent year vis-à-vis box-office returns, with less highs and substantial lows puncturing the spirit of the film fraternity. Nonetheless, there’s no harm in hoping that the year would terminate with a big bang. The Hindi film industry is on tenterhooks, craving for a Blockbuster and the extended holiday period [Christmas and New Year celebrations] promises to usher in the much-needed respite, thus ending the dry spell at the ticket counters.

After delivering the monstrous hit CHENNAI EXPRESS, Shah Rukh Khan teams up with the Hit machine — director Rohit Shetty — yet again. Also, Kajol, SRK’s co-star of several unforgettable films, adds incredible weight to this keenly anticipated project. In addition, several enviable names, on and off screen, lend muscle to the enterprise. The canvas is gigantic as well. It can’t get bigger than DILWALE, honestly.

Rohit Shetty is synonymous with audience-friendly movies. Most critics may deplore his work, but the paying public — the ones who matter ultimately — reveres his cinema. He promises dollops of entertainment and encompasses just about every ingredient available on the shelf, which the hoi polloi laps up with glee. His movies may not offer ground-breaking stuff, nor do they pick up meritorious awards, but he whips up a storm at the box-office every time he attempts a high-on-entertainment fare. Naturally, one expects DILWALE to surpass SRK-Rohit’s previous endeavor by a wide margin.

Come to think of it, DILWALE is similar to CHENNAI EXPRESS in several ways. Rohit Shetty focuses on the love story yet again, while the light moments, high-octane drama and aimed-at-masses dialogue — the staple ingredients or fodder that contribute to a masalathon — adorn the goings-on wonderfully. At heart, and true to its title, DILWALE remains a love story, not an assemblage of sequences to win and woo the spectators.

Last word? DILWALE delivers what it promises: Entertainment in enormous doses. Rohit Shetty’s latest creation speaks the language that the masses comprehend. It’s one formula that can never go out of fashion, if handled smartly. And, don’t we know by now, how proficient Rohit Shetty is when it comes to delivering a full-on entertainer in his unmistakable style.

The gist of the story: Raj aka Kaali [Shah Rukh Khan], a don, now leads a changed life in Goa. His world revolves around his brother Veer [Varun Dhawan]. Veer falls in love with Ishita [Kriti Sanon], who happens to be Meera’s [Kajol] sister. Raj and Meera’s paths had collided in the past and that becomes an obstacle for Veer and Ishita.

First things first! Speculation is rife that DILWALE is an updated/modified version of HUM [1991], but that’s not true at all. Most love stories navigate identical paths and DILWALE is no different. Rohit Shetty stresses on vintage stuff [love triumphs against all odds], but he along with screenplay writer Yunus Sajawal narrates it smartly, peppering and garnishing the proceedings with sub-plots that keep you completed captivated, while the dialogue [Farhad-Sajid] act as the icing on the cake. The twists and turns involving SRK and Kajol is clearly the USP of the enterprise. In fact, the two turning points in the love story, both in the first half, will catch the viewer completely unaware.

Sure, DILWALE has its share of blemishes that cannot be overlooked either. The writing stagnates at regular intervals… The villain’s track could’ve been more persuasive… The pre-climax, when things are sorted out between SRK and Kajol, seems convenient… However, these are minor aberrations. For, the plusses easily outweigh and outnumber the minuses here.

The soundtrack [Pritam] gels wonderfully with the genre of the film. ‘Gerua’, filmed most exquisitely, is a rage already and definitely the pick of the lot. ‘Manma Emotion Jaage Re’ is another groovy track that has caught on in a big way [the social media is flooded with its Dubsmash versions and that clearly indicates its popularity]. ‘Janam Janam’ is another soulful composition, while ‘Tukur Tukur’, which comes at the end credits, is a vintage track that’s mandatory in a biggie. The best part is, the songs are appropriately interspersed in the scheme of things. The background score [Amar Mohile] is creditable and in sync with the on-screen situations.

Rohit Shetty’s movies are embroidered with some implausible, but incredible stunts. DILWALE has a few action pieces, but the ones featuring SRK are vibrant. Cinematography is top-quality and the DoP [Dudley] makes every frame appear larger-than-life. The panoramic locales of Bulgaria appear truly spectacular.

The principal cast provides the much-needed sheen to Rohit Shetty’s vision. For the incalculable fans of SRK and Kajol, it’s a treat to watch the celebrated couple after a hiatus [after MY NAME IS KHAN; 2010]. It goes without saying that the duo dominates the proceedings with their effervescent acts. SRK is at his charismatic best in the young avtaar and carries off the angry, middle-aged guy with aplomb. Kajol looks gorgeous and steals your heart with a performance that stays in your memory. Actually, her character is one of the high points of the film and the terrific portrayal takes it notches higher. Besides, the on-screen chemistry is one of the pillars on which DILWALE rests.

Varun Dhawan, the teen heart-throb, is excellent, despite being pitted with some of the best names in the business. The young actor, barely five films old, is credible in light moments and compelling in poignant sequences. Kriti Sanon is camera-friendly and confident to the T.

DILWALE boasts of a commanding supporting cast, but the ones who sparkle include Sanjay Mishra [exceptional], Johny Lever [super], Mukesh Tiwari [first-rate] and Pankaj Tripathi [competent]. Boman Irani does exceedingly well. Vinod Khannna and Kabir Bedi, the two veterans, are just right. Varun Sharma contributes amply to the comic situations. Nawwab Shah is adequate.

On the whole, DILWALE is akin to a mouthwatering meal that satiates the craving of those who relish masalathons, besides being an absolute treat for SRK-Kajol fans. An unadulterated crowd-pleaser, DILWALE delivers what you expect from a Rohit Shetty film: King-sized entertainment. Go for it!

  55. What’s hot:

Ranveer Singh, well obviously. With a performance like this, even his worst critics will fall helplessly in love with him. He will just steal your heart with his carefully measured stance as the powerful Peshwa Bajirao. If you had slightest issues with his hyper-activeness on screen, you will notice how much this actor has grown in the last few years. He is intense in most scenes, he rides horses and fights with traditional Maharashtrian weapons like Danpatta like a pro and other times, he just lets himself go and captivates the entire screen with his madness. His every frame is perfect. Though his aggressive fight scenes will mesmerise you, his sad forlorn bloodshot eyes as he pines for his love Mastani will stay with you for a long, long time.

  57. A disclaimer flashes on the big screen in the beginning to state the message in no uncertain terms. “some instances of the story have been altered for cinematic appeal/dramatic effect.” True to that, SLB takes the proverbial cinematic liberty to a different zone altogether; to the level of being indulgent. And he does so to deliver an endeavour the scale of which is mind-boggling. The opulence on display is blinding. While the first half of the film is entertaining and engaging, the second half seems stretched beyond belief.

Shuttling between a historic film and a romantic saga, SLB manages to strike a fine balance. He certainly allows Bajirao to take centre stage. Ranveer portrays the ambitious warrior who had won a record 40 battles on the trot. Bajirao’s ambition is grand. To dethrone the Mughal saltanat from Delhi and to rule the entire country he employes his strength, courage and the sense of justice. He respects Islam, but doesn’t want to ally with the rulers in Delhi. He is merciful, dexterous and sharp (sexy too! Ranveer wears his dhoti dangerously low yet again to showcase his bod). Married happily to Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra) with a son in toe, Bajirao’s love for Mastani (Deepika) is not socially acceptable. Mastani has certainly won Bajirao over with her beauty, commitment and valour. And now there’s no going back even if the dire consequences are looming!

Bajirao a.k.a Ranveer Singh absolutely nailed it! His hard work has finally paid him back in applauds. He proves it to you that he has all the calibre to fit into any shoe and walk the path with pride. Not even for one second does anybody feel that it is Ranveer Singh playing the character. The attitude, the bravery, the fearless nature of a true warrior is all portrayed so well that it becomes difficult to recognize that it is the funny entertainer Ranveer behind those huge shields.
Be it killing the enemies on the war field or romancing the gorgeous women behind those closed curtains; he has lived up to every part with zeal and sheer enthusiasm. His outstanding performance has been one of the high points of the movie.

Asked if she fell in love with Big B while making the 10 films they share, she said, “Absolutely. Duh, that’s a dumb question. I have yet to come across a single man, woman, child who can help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately, hopelessly in love with him. So why should I be singled out? What do I deny? I’m not in love with him? Of course I am. Duniya bhar ka love aap le lijiyega and add some more – I feel that for that person. Bottomline.”

She also claimed that he had “no clue” how she felt and that much ado was made about nothing. The reported affair didn’t happen. “You want to know the truth? This is headline, OK? There was never a personal connection with him, that’s the truth. Never ever. There was no truth to the controversies and speculation” she told Simi Garewal.

Amitabh Bachchan had been married for some years to Jaya Bhaduri when he and Rekha signed their first film together, 1976’s Do Anjaane. It didn’t matter that he was taken. “The fact that he was a married man doesn’t make any kind of a difference. A rose is a rose is a rose. A human being is interesting, period. I want to have the honour of being associated with this person so what is stopping me? I’m not here to ‘break’ his home so to speak. I’m here to be one of the lesser mortals who can just have a whiff of him and feel happy,” Rekha, now 61, said on Rendezvous.

Nor was there a rift with Mrs Bachchan, whom she calls Didibhai (the Bengali word for elder sister), Rekha claimed then. “Not at all. Didibhai is much more mature, much more together. I’ve yet to come across a woman who is so together. She’s got so much dignity, so much class. She’s got a lot of strength. I admire that woman. We had an association before the so-called rumours and the media messed up the whole image. We were living in the same building and we had a relationship. She was my Didibhai, she still is – no matter what happens nobody can take that away. Thank God she realizes that too. Whenever we meet she’s very sweet – she’s not just civil, she’s just herself,” she said.

        • “I get it that there are many here like yakuza, satyam, raghav, Vijay, yourself who hates srk but at least be little fair and balanced.”

fair enough but then there are also many here (who don’t need to be named!) whose love stories with SRK probably make their wives jealous all the time..

Speaking for myself I don’t hate SRK. I dislike certain kinds of cinema, I also dislike certain kinds of politics offscreen. Of course when you’re truly in love you find it hard to ‘see’ these faults let alone spot the distinctions in terms of why people like or dislike one person or another.

To add to this SRK ‘fans’ are lovers of CDI when he does this film but also lovers of RNBDJ and even Rohit Shetty when he does those. Soon they’ll be calling Fan an art house effort. They’re liberal when he is one, they don’t mind the minority card being played when he does it, they’d also become right-wingers if he were one. He hasn’t run over anyone yet but that too wouldn’t be a problem judging by some of the reactions to Salman here. I understand the ‘love story’ here but one should retain one’s individuality even in an intense relationship!

One can accuse others of hate when one is less partisan on the other side oneself and not when one runs a daily (and anxious) commentary track on everything related to Dilwale including whether climate change is already affecting the film’s ticket sales.

this ‘oh they hate my favorite’ tag got stale a decade ago if not more. Do some people hate SRK? Sure! So what? One can hate any star. I don’t quite find this to be the most pressing moral issue of the day! But yeah whether that hate (or love) translates into absurd spin all the time is another matter. And here the lovers of SRK are equally guilty.

  66. BOI says strong opening for Dilwale

Dilwale had a strong opening of around 65% while Bajirao Mastani was slower with a 30% start on average with the clash really only happening in multiplexes of Mumbai and Pune while the rest of the country saw a healthy advantage for Dilwale.

Dilwale had a very big lead in East Punjab, Nizam / Andhra, Mysore and East India while most other areas outside Mumbai and Pune had a good lead. The gap in above circuits was double and even more at some centres. It was certain properties of Mumbai and Pune where both films had similar occupancy. The key area Gujarat also saw Dilwale leading and it will important for Bajirao Mastani to close the gap in the evening if it is to have any chance of competing as without Gujarat the film can’t go anywhere.

Despite the strong opening, the screenings of Dilwale are 65% of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with around 12000 shows per day compared to 18000 plus of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. If the film can get a 20 crore nett plus number up on day one, fair value for that would be close to 30 crore nett.

Bajirao Mastani is depending on word of mouth especially outside the Mumbai Pune belt and it has to make strides quickly preferably by evening or by tomorrow at the latest if it is to have a chance.

  67. Back from Dilwale.. as usual 1st person on here!

In simple words – Movie is good and on expected lines. Bad part is that it isn’t great movie. SRK and Kajol are usual but Varun Dhawn is fantastic. Screenplay is good with some nice twists and turns and smart screenplay but eventually gets jarring at places in 2nd half and humor doesn’t work always (it can target different folks.. which I didn’t find funny, I heard lot of laughs, so we never know and some jokes got universal laughs – Raamlal and pogo jokes). There is lot of content in the 2.5 hours but the ride isn’t as smooth as CE as it has 2-3 times the content of CE. Just 3 songs and 1 background song are placed very well and all the songs look good in the movie.

Overall, this is certainly better than HNY and almost as good as CE(that’s personal choice.. all the folks with me said this is better than CE). This is more massy and if masses connect, this can do great. Overall, I think this would do 225 crores as BM is released same time.

‘The contents are not merely un-fizzy but, unforgivably, flat,’ Raja Sen says about Dilwale.

You can tell a lot about a filmmaker from the way they use a stolen scene.

Somewhere in the middle of the once-great sitcom How I Met Your Mother, narrator Ted Mosby meets a doctor called Stella who is too busy for a date. She eventually grants him two minutes and, within those fleeting seconds, he heroically packs several samples of a date-night, from cab-ride to movie to dessert. Romance, if you will, by way of tasting menu.

You long for a genuinely moving, exciting story, featuring all these beautiful people, all actors able to pull off characters, but buried under their mounds of clothes, mouthing dialogue. ‘Bajirao Mastani’ had the potential to be a terrific historical. What it ends up being is a costume drama: too many costumes, too much revved-up, empty drama, and too little story. – See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/movie-review/bajirao-mastani-movie-review-deepika-padukone-ranveer-singh-one-and-half-stars/#sthash.LR0WIFja.dpuf

  74. Just got back from both, Dilwale first then Bajirao Mastani.

Both as BAD as each other.

Dilwale, for its plusses has the SRK-Kajol chemistry, any scenes with them are always watchable and the film basically rides on them. Theres a twist, that is good but can be predicted way before it happens, and the songs too are a treat to watch. The story is predictable though, the screenplay jarred and the jokes, for the most part, never land. Varun/Kriti have nothing to do, there was no point in them being there, too many side actors spoil this, this is a SRK/Kajol affair.

Bajirao Mastani: long, drawn out and contrived to the core (in many ways the story is just like Dilwale, predictable). What i liked in this film was Ranveer Singh, he’s brilliant as Bajirao imo, Deepika I always said was a miscast and shes’s just poor. The film ‘looks’ good, it’s clearly technically brilliant with hard work going on into each scene, but the screenplay is poor, the pace never gets going, it’s an uncomfortable watch.

For both films, it’s a case of style over substance.

I think Dilwale might win the clash on the basis that it has the SRK-Kajol factor, BM for me had to be the perfect film to challenge Dilwale (which might have trending like CE, it appears to be Rohit Shettys best reviewed film, which is not saying much)

  75. It doesn’t help that she’s entirely eaten up by Priyanka Chopra, who, while not in the title, owns Bajirao Mastani. Her role is that of the moral right, but Bhansali goes out of his way to imbue her character with selflessness and dignity.

Chopra’s terrific in the part, her intelligently expressive eyes speaking volumes and her no-nonsense Marathi rhythm bang-on, but having the film side so obviously with her — placing her on a pedestal over the two lovers, even — is a narrative misstep.

The most awful oversight, however, is how this film has been promoted with the most massive of spoilers. The whole second half of Bajirao Mastani could have been kept alive with the germ of intrigue about a confrontation between Chopra’s Kashi Bai and Padukone’s Mastani: How will they collide, will they ever see eye to eye, will one kill the other, and so forth.

But the entire film turns flaccid because it has been sold to the audience on the back of a song that features them merrily dancing together in matching sarees, telling us that none of the stakes are high enough to matter. Or sharp enough to draw blood.

Bhansali, for what it’s worth, has gone all out with this one. He’s made warrior girls play the banjo; he’s made Old Spice salesmen look old; he’s created outrageous, mostly fountain-based subtext about husbands and wives getting each other wet; and he’s even saluted world cinema and raised a few red lanterns.

If only he had more to say than the fact that he loves Mughal-e-Azam.

We must take this into consideration, the consideration that this clash will ruin us and ultimately this consideration should avoid a clash. SLB told Sony, look Sony, we must consider this consideration and considering that this is my ego trip we must put this consideration into action and ultimately go for a clash. -BM might come out less scathed at the end

    Like

    • Both will realize once the reality sinks in that they both will lose a lot by clashing.

Not many movie are monster releasing solo so by clashing with a big movie, the thought of being monster was gone. If anything it can hurt big time if audience don’t connect with your product because they have a choice of watching something else.

Agree to some level on “BM might come out less scathed at the end”. I think Bhasali will realize too that by clashing he may have potentially lost out on about 30 to 50 crore.

      Like

    • BM because of a stronger critical reaction (at least so far) will look respectable with a lesser gross. Still Bhansali was foolish here because he should have been precisely more careful with a better film. These sorts of period films don’t attract a mass audience. Even with the best of stars we’ve seen this. And Ranveer is hardly in that league. A solo release and strong WOM would have really helped here. If it does a 100 or something that will seem rather good under the circumstances but given that this is an expensive release and so on it would still have lost out on a much bigger gross. Having said that it’s still the case that such films do well over time by attracting attract of a family audience. Otherwise this just isn’t a deal for the younger multiplex demographic. It would take not just strong but extraordinary WOM to get over that hump to any degree.

Dilwale still has less of a gross problem (even if people will try to spin whatever there is!). Because no one who is interested in the film is likely to miss it because of BM. Yes if the WOM is average or less people might decide to go for the other film and to this extent the gross can be affected but it wouldn’t be so without an inherent weakness in the film.

      Like

    • But even leaving aside the clash and so on it’s very clear that this film wouldn’t have done 300 even as a solo release. Some of us have been saying it for ages. You don’t get to those numbers even with an extraordinary run for many days (as we saw with D3) without enough of an audience really liking the film. PK did 335 or whatever. Bajrangi crossed 300. Everything else is way behind D3 let alone these two films. Unfortunately fans of different stars set themselves up by not accepting this. That you really need a good enough film. And there’s no shame in this. The biggest stars can get you the initial, specially in the right film, but the better films still do better in the long run. Again many folks have been laughing at Aamir for years but now they’re learning this lesson the hard way. Precisely because some of these other stars have got initials as big or bigger or whatever but not the grosses. And Bajrangi is the best possible deal Salman could ever do in terms of the universally good reception here plus the fact that he’s at his absolute peak. What hope is there for anyone else barring a film that is liked that much? One makes it ONLY about the lead star and one pays the price. When films are hits fans forget the co-stars, the director, the genre and so on. When it doesn’t work as expected it’s about everything else. You can’t change the story at different ends of the equation. From the reviews it doesn’t look like Dilwale is going to be liked as much as CE (not that I liked this one either after the first 10 min). But even a CE-like deal would not have got to 300. Not even close. Shetty’s films are not good enough to do this, a point I’ve repeated several times. I’d be surprised if Dilwale does more than HNY (in that range) which would of course be better than that film since it didn’t have competition but I doubt SRK got into this deal (or his fans for that matter) just to match that film or for that matter even match CE.

    BAJIRAO MASTANI

“On the whole, Bajirao Mastani is a visually delightful entertainer and a cinematic masterpiece. Unfortunately, it holds more appeal for the classes and multiplex audiences and less for the masses. This will reflect adversely in its commercial report card because a film with an investment of the kind made in this project needed to be universally appealing, nothing less than that. Its collections are bound to pick up due to positive mouth publicity. In commercial terms, however, its very high cost on the one hand and an ordinary initial on the other, coupled with the fact that it has released in direct opposition of Dilwale, will not see it making profits. Rather, this masterpiece could, quite unfortunately and tragically, even entail losses to the persons concerned.”

A comparison of the early morning figures in Noida of recent big films is below. The figures are audience counts for shows conducted before 11.30

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan

    5576 / 5921 – 94.17%

    20 shows

    Prem Ratan Dhan Paya

    6006 / 6397 – 93.89%

    26 shows

    Dilwale

    15 shows

    3539/ 3865 – 91.57%

    Bajirao Mastani

    12 shows

    1767 / 3012 – 58.66%

Dilwale has taken a taken a strong opening but the 15 shows are telling factor which leaves the numbers well below Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo despite opening to near full houses.

Bajirao Mastani managed good figures in just one of the six multiplexes and a third of its shows were at that multiplex, the others were low.

        • The only positive about Bhansali film is that if you plan to watch it, you need to see it big screen for all the costumes, sets and grandeur or else you can completely skip it. That’s will be the best part of his movies and always be irrespective of the good or bad movie (even Saawariya).

        • ” I am going to give Dilwale a skip after seeing various reviews.”

Problem is you don’t really get an honest review of movies anymore. SO the scenario is bhansali befriends KRK, it’s cast goes to anupama chopra site or any other site, those groups will give movie a favorable review, at mimimum, raise the rating by 1 star and at the same time will reduce the rating of opposing movie by one star.

Same with Dilwale, if they give interview to bollywoodhungama, they will give it 4 star, just like they did for BM too.

Then you have some who are just bashing the film in the name of giving a review.

So I usually listen to somebody who like a particular type of film but disliked that type of film. So if you like Shetty type of films but don’t like Dilwale, than I know to avoid it.

For example, I liked Yash chopra film but hated JTHJ. loved veer-zaara but walked out of JTHJ.

Ranveer has done a far better job than Hrithik in JA. As a director, I would have restrained him more, as I could see the taporiness seeping in every once in a rare while. The dialogues needed more pauses and thehrav than what I saw, in few of the scenes, but then I am being too picky. It is not worthy of repeat watch (unless you want to admire the costumes or sets again) for me but then I never saw any of SLB movies again except HDDCS which I can watch over and over again.

  97. Dilwale And Bajirao Mastani First Day Estimates
    Saturday 19 December 2015 01.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dilwale has had a very good first day with collections of 21-22 crore nett as per early estimates. The film was also affected by some disruptions in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat but still its a big number going by the release. A full out release could have seen a 30 core nett number on a non holiday or at least very close to it.

The film has scored very well in South India and East India. The numbers in Nizam / Andhra, Mysore, Tamil Nadu / Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Orissa are excellent as release was a bit more normal with number of screens near to what it would have got normally. South India and West Bengal are also due to the Shahrukh Khan factor.

The rest of the country has seen good collections rather than excellent due to screens being less due to the clash with Bajirao Mastani. Delhi/ UP has been hit for 1 crore due to Bajirao Mastaani getting the best single screens even though it has poor collections on them.

Bajirao Mastaani has grossed around 11.5-12 crore nett as per early estimates. It is a low number but if you take into account the clash with Dilwale and the cast its not too bad. Obviously for the costs involved the film needed a much higher number. The film has done well in Maharashtra but rest of the country has not performed with UP and East India having very dull collections. The film was also affected by some disruptions in Maharashtra. It is a 15-16 crore nett number on fair value if it was a solo release which is actually what it needed as a minimum to go towards recovery.

There was a Tamil and Telugu version of the film which is a total disaster with collections even lower than the same version of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which also suffered a similar fate.

3RD UPDATE WRITETHRU, FRIDAY 8:40 AM: Star Wars: The Force Awakens has shattered the box office industry’s preview night record with $57 million on Thursday night. That kicks aside the previous mark of $43.5M set by 2011’s Harry Potter And The Deathly force awakensHallows – Part 2. 3D repped 47% of Force Awakens’ grosses, with Imax generating $5.7M at 391 hubs; that’s close to double the previous preview night record set by Avengers: Age Of Ultron of $3M.

        • of course Titanic is a monster in terms of trending. Even Avatar wasn’t spectacular in week 1. These films get there with vastly bigger initials. So for instance Avengers or Jurassic World doing as much as Titanic or more doesn’t mean the same. Not just because of inflation or even 3D which is now a huge part of the deal (not to mention IMAX). The Titanic trending was just incredible. Even Avatar wasn’t close here but Avatar was still better than any other contemporary film on this score. Somehow Cameron has been able to make films back to back that have truly struck a chord with the audience. And in each case he’s come up with something that has made the film completely unmissable on the big screen. And he’s achieved repeat viewings as well. But Star Wars could certainly do better than Jurassic world/Avengers. It has a much longer history and it’s got very good reviews this time.

  100. don’t think BM was ever on track to get more than 15 or so on day 1. This genre just doesn’t attract that sort of audience. And the family audience really kicks in over the weekend or later in the week on trending. Now an exceptional performance might have given it a bit more but I don’t think the 11-12 crore number is bad at all. the budget is a different issue but it was always going to be unlikely for this film to make enough to truly justify the budget. In some ways the overseas collections though might have been hit harder because here you have a certain cross-section of the audience that goes in for the period element but this is also the audience that is big on SRK-Kajol. Anyway getting back to India Bhansali would certainly have been wiser to release it solo, no two ways about it, but this number is more than a decent one for a Fri all things considered.

On Dilwale that number too is ok but I think it could have done more. In each case it’s going to be about the Sat-Sun numbers as always but the point is that trending is always questionable with Shetty and so you need to get in as much as possible early on. I also don’t have the sense that this is one of Shetty’s efforts. Doubt it can manage the CE trending (which itself wasn’t spectacular), specially with the competition (unless BM tanks or something.. seems unlikely after the reviews but it could have a lower baseline).

Very early of course and it’s hard to predict these things because of the din of social media and spin like BOI’s and the trade and so on but if I had to bet on a range I’d say Dilwale is likely to be in the HNY range and BM probably at 80-90. Both could be higher but unless each shows a spectacular jump over the weekend it’s going to be hard. specially BM. And again here it will really have to be about trending for a couple of weeks. The number today is I think alright but it can’t go lower than this. Don’t mean Sat-Sun. In the weekdays it has to be rather stable. And though such reviews would make it an easy prediction for any other film it’s hard here because of the genre. Even with good trending JA with a much bigger pair just didn’t have much strength. It got the family audiences but it ambled along at the lower end. Bhansali’s films are of course more exciting than Gowariker’s but he doesn’t have that sort of A-list star for some of the genre ‘doubters’. On the other hand he has probably opened better than JA all things considered.

After seeing all the backlash that Dilwale is getting at social media (there are memes already being created), it would be less dampening for SRK if the film flops.

A big hit which survives mainly on the collections of the first weekend results in MORE being people disappointed with your product who after seeing it would want it to fail. It really irritates the viewer (talking about v personal experience, it gives an incredulously helpless feeling) to see the film making money after being taken for granted with their money. The shrewd business tactics are on heavy display here. I don’t particularly mind Shetty’s films and many of SRK’s early films can be clubbed as timepass if nothing more but they both seem detrimental to each other as neither is making his kind of cinema. Lately SRK’s entered a territory where he’s getting increasingly delusional about himself and believes he still needs to continue to earn as much money as possible, and mega opening blockbusters are the only way to do so. Robbing people off money doesn’t earn you respect, it earns spite and you lose fans. SRK is a rare example of a celebrity who has continued to lose his fan base (I am an example too) with every subsequent film post the Rab ne bana di jodi phase. Akki was another such star but he seems to have recovered and gained respect for starring in decent films once a while lately. Many people I know have the meanest things to say about him. Someone close to him who isn’t a boot licker must instil some sense in him and show him the path he should take at 50 instead of turning a blind eye to it. Kitni thodi bohot izzat bachi hai, bachao use. You’ve already earned all the money you needed. You don’t need it now. You can’t be the most successful BO star. By your own admission, salman and aamir are ahead. All you can do is star in good films (which know yourself know you don’t) that even if not successful earn cult statuses over the years and make people fondly remember you.

    • I’m a bit skeptical of simply adding the grosses of two films. Of course clashes hurt a release but I think a 25 crore day 1 number was certainly a fair expectation. Think krish was more or less predicting this. Also things don’t always pan out this way. PK had 26 or whatever on day 1. Had there been a clash people would have attributed the lower number to this. Admittedly a Shetty film is a different cup of tea and is expected to start out with a bang. a few crores here and there don’t make a difference to the overall picture unless it’s indicative of WOM. In any case we’ve seen massive opening and record-breaking numbers for films that then end with a whimper. HNY being a classic example. So it’s still about trending. D3 didn’t get to it’s number because of day one or even the first weekend let alone Bajrangi or better still PK. In many ways for these big films these opening numbers don’t mean anything except in a relative sense. but here because of the clash Dilwale obviously has less leeway. that won’t however be the difference between a huge hit and a so-so affair. In other words 200 for Dilwale and say 80 or even a 100 for BM won’t mean 300 for Dilwale on its own. Again you can’t just add these things up. CE didn’t do 300 on its own. It didn’t even do 250. Nor did any Salman film for that matter. Nor any Shetty film, even allowing for the trending patterns of his older films and making other inflation adjustments. The film has to be truly liked after a big enough opening. Now if Dilwale got to 250 one could make that 300 argument because it couldn’t possibly get to that number without enough trending given this clash. Even a solo 250 would be pretty good all things considered. But again we saw both with HNY and PRDP how even 200 is a challenge after the biggest initials if the films aren’t liked. If they’re somewhat liked you still only get into the 220 zone or so. With D3 you had the biggest franchise with Aamir and you saw historic numbers more or less for a 10 day period which wouldn’t have come about if the film hadn’t been liked enough (though it could have easily done PK’s gross or more had it been liked as much as the first two Dhooms). To get to Bajrangi and then PK you need more than this. So there are very many steps. Fans forget this when they just start tossing out these highest numbers. But yes 200 (as I’ve been saying for a while) is rather easy to reach these days given a big start. The fact that some of these biggest films struggle to do even this indicates the degree of the rejection more than anything else, a fact that gets lost in all this nonsensical reporting everywhere.

Incidentally for what it’s worth Kamaal R Khan predicts 180-200 for Dilwale and 100-120 for BM.

      Like

      • I think 25 crore should have been a fair target. It also would have been the ceiling considering the size but one must expect close to bumper occupancy when your release count is less. D suffered there. The first shows were not bumper, maybe around 70 to 75%. Again mind you this is a great for a non holiday but I was expecting more due to the constricted release size. That and the fact that D didn’t get any of the single screens in Delhi and Rajasthan did reduce the 25 cr to 22 odd. (The court case that was won was for Mumbai single screens only). But all this doesn’t matter now as the WOM though not as bad as HNY is still not as good as BM and that is now hurting D. People are opting for BM over D as that movies WOM is better atleast in multiplexes. Again the WOM of D is not bad at all and with a solo release it would have gone past HNY but these are the side effects of clashes. Even an average or above average WOM is not enough if the other movie has a good WOM

        Like

        • IF D reaches 180 that would be better than Ghajini like trending…No chance I tell you..

        • Ghajini did 55 crores or so in 7 days, 60 or so for that extended week or some such thing. It then doubled that week 1 number. Don’t think it’s possible for Dilwale to do that. For that matter no big film does that these days. Most are not even remotely close. Not even Dabanng doubled it’s week 1 number (80 crores and then 145 or something).

          Like

        • LOL. Ghajini broke records left right and center by huge margin, and trended very well in its time. Inflation adjusted it wont do less than 350 cr if released today.

          Like

        • that’s a fair summary but I think that competition is becoming a catch-all explanation. My sense is that this film didn’t interest people quite as much as CE. Sure it would still have done more as a solo, but those numbers flatter to deceive. HNY even as a solo fell dramatically fast after a point. Had there been competition then everything would have been chalked up to this. Yes the numbers will of course be bigger in the absence of competition but that doesn’t indicate a film that has been liked more. And the occupancy question is an important one. With lesser screens it should have run up even stronger occupancies. So your expectation wasn’t incorrect there. It’s true that with competition and specially with ticket prices being what they are you can very easily skip a movie if you think it’s not going to be great. But since I’m never dense enough to just look at overall numbers, solo or otherwise, I won’t do so here either. I’m more interested in the film’s trajectory. So yes you can add crores to the gross within reason but then you also have to explain why a film like HNY did under 200 (and at least according to some sources it didn’t do more than 175). Now with competition HNY might have done far less than that but that still doesn’t change the overall narrative on the film. Jai Ho folded at 120 or whatever. PRDP was another HNY, maybe a bit better. But again had there been competition people would have said different things.

Finally the logic is a bit contradictory. Either one must say it’s a terrible film that has been utterly rejected which is why people are going for BM. But even accepting that BM is being liked Bhansali has never made a proper all-India hit (not even HDDCS was this), he does best in Western India. This is not an audience-friendly genre, he doesn’t even have an A list male lead. On the other hand if one is constantly going to talk about SRK’s star power (not to mention the fact that this is also the biggest commercial director in town or that this is the SRK-Kajol pair as well) and if the film is decent at the very least what does it say that people are just abandoning this film to watch BM? This is after all the narrative that’s being dished out. Now people want to say that it’s about a ‘good’ film versus a ‘bad’ one. but that’s always the case. To be honest nothing here particularly surprises me when it comes to SRK. I think one can look at every big release of his post-OSO (and including that film) and draw certain conclusions. Certainly relative to Aamir or Salman Dabangg and beyond. Whatever Dilwale ends up doing it’s not as if the world changes on a star just because one film releases that gives it competition. KKHH released with BMCM. The latter did well too but it was a quicker fade. It had a bigger week 1 than KKHH but ultimately KKHH was the much bigger hit. Competition is always problematic (much moreso for Bhansali who I think made the wrong decision even if his film did well) but there’s an essential narrative on a film. Profitability is another matter. Maybe with competition Jai Ho would have done 90. That’s a trade proposition but the audience isn’t liking it much more at 120 or whatever. Of course because fans are just interested in the overall numbers and see how much their favorite star is doing relative to others they don’t care about these deeper trends.

A lot of hard work has gone into the film and it shows. Ranveer was expectedly good, but Priyanka too was just perfect IMO. Deepika was good too, especially the sword fighting portions to which she is physically suited. Hers was the major role, but somehow Priyanka’s role and performance moved me a bit more. Deepika managed to move me in one of the closing scenes. The dialogues were good; Ranvir spoke with a Marathi inflection and occasionally Priyanka did too.Thete were a few Marathi bits, some talk about Hindu- Muslim, religion, colours associated with religion — seemed right. Tanvi Azmi played the Brahmin matriarch very well indeed. One song featuring Ranveer and a group of guys — looked like a Dabang type Salman song! Seemed a bit out of character for the film, but hey, if the girls get song-dances, why not the guys?Overall, a thumbs up for this Bhansali spectacular, worth watching at least once.

  112. Box Office Report: Dilwale Going Strong in International Circuits; Leads BM by a Huge Margin!

So it has finally happened. The much awaited films Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani released this weekend amidst a lot of fun and fanfare. Well, the box office reports are out and judging by the initial business, it seems that Dilwale is leading with a huge margin.
Dilwale, which had a had a strong opening of around 65% (as opposed to Bajirao Mastani – 30% ), is apparently still going strong. Analysts predict that the movie has a 100% certainty to beat Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in some circuits. Experts predict that the Dilwale numbers will be better than PRDP in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bihar, West Bengal and Mysore.
As for Bajirao Mastani business mainly depends on the Delhi, Punjab and Gujarat circuits. While Mumbai and Pune are doing well, trade analysts mention that this is not enough to keep the movie going. BM needs support from the North and Gujarat ‘to go anywhere’. However, the collections in these two ciruits have not been very encouraging so far, as per the reports.
As for international circuits, the first day collection of Dilwale in UAE is apparently the best ever for a Hindi film, approx $900,000. This means it is ahead of Star Wars by 60%, & of BajiraoMastani by around 400%.
Well, this is the status as of now. Let us wait and watch how things proceed from here.

    • I think this proves that I’ve said actually this clash is beneficial to BM. I mean, SLB is any day better director than Rohit Shetty. SLB’s movies will always be more critic friendly than RS’s movies. Now, almost all critics and folks are comparing BM with D and saying BM is better. But that was always going to an incorrect comparison. If BM would have come solo, then it would have been compared with Jodha Akbar and even MEA but no one would have compared it to any RS movie in that year. But now its getting compared with RS’s D and 99.9% will call it better and that’s an huge advantage.

Just when we thought Shah Rukh’s cinematic caliber could plunge no lower than last year’s Happy New Year, he surprises us with an unhappy Christmas gift. Yes, the battle of the behemoths is finally on us. The box-office verdict is yet not clear. After battling it out in court (and outside), for screens and theatres, both the eagerly awaited films have opened to packed houses across the country and overseas.

#BajiraoMastani Fri ₹ 12.80 cr [3050 screens]. India biz. Film growing rapidly with strong word of mouth and glowing reviews.

BOI again inflating SRK movie bo numbers as usual, atleast for Day one and weekend they have been fudging higher numbers than producers total. This has been trend, for HNY also they gave 40+ cr first day.

    • BOI is trying to portray BM first day is half of dilwale but as per Taran is more like 2/3 of dilwale.
And Second day should easily be neck to neck as per trends as least by Taran’s numbers. Though, BOI will still try to keep dilwale afloat to some extent for few days but lie don’t survuve for long.

      • Didn’t BOI reduce the HNY first day to 36 and also geta lot of flak for doing it to by SRK fans? Also, today they confirmed that Dilwale was 21.5 and Bajirao 12.5, so they’ve adjusted accordingly and its no longer double net collection for Dilwale!

Bajirao Mastaani was below thw mark on day one with 12.25 crore nett as it suffered due to the clash with Dilwale. The film only saw good collections in Maharashtra with the rest of the country not really performing. Mysore was also pretty good. Mumbai circuit was more than 40% of the all India collections.

The mass circuits were always going to find it hard. For North India, it was the regional Maharashtra flavor of the film and circuits like West Bengal and Nizam / Andhra where it could have collected well are Shahrukh Khan strong circuits. The film could have grossed 4-5 crore nett more if it was a solo release which would have been a good platform to build from.

The film should manage growth on Saturday as its better collections are at premium multiplexes which have best collections on Saturday. The film will need big support from other major regions outside Maharashtra over the weekend if it is to make any real headway. The film also had a dubbed version which very poor with around 30 lakhs nett

Dilwale grossed 21 crore nett on its first day with stroong performance in South and East India. In Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Tamil Nadu / Kerala it beat the opening day figures of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which was a big national holiday.

Nizam / Andhra, Mysore and Orissa also saw excellent numbers. The business in Maharashtra was worst as here it was a real clash and the figures of Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani were similar with some multiplexes in Mumbai city and Pune being lower than Bajirao Mastani. The film collected very well in single screens as Bajirao Mastani could not perform in single screens outside Maharashtra but even here the problem was that in some areas the better collecting single screens were with Bajirao Mastani.

This market will surprise, by the end of run BM can outgross dilwale here. Though, in rest of the big international markets, difference is huge, especially Dubai and UK.

Am sure both films would probably lose 15-20% revenue due to the clash but SLB did make his point.

        Like

        • The problem with clashes is obviously revenue lost. But I suspect to gain some sort of upper hand marketing & promotion expenses must be higher. So the revenue over cost is possibly a double whammy.

But agree this might turn out to be a moral victory for SLB. And I doubt SRK would be sensible to clash with Salman now.

That D might finish few crores ahead at end will be very little to gloat about. If anything if WOM is like HNY then next week would have been better to release as at least front loading might cover a bit of embarrassment.

Only Monday will tell where both are headed. But the clash has divided business rather than increased business which is not a great sign.

        • There are 2 more holiday extended weekend left for business, i dont think there could have been better date for release unless movie is bad and going to tank.
I think dilwale will struggle in next two weekends especially in multiplexes.
BM team needs to promote it strategically for single screens in small centers, there is plenty of time for movie to pick up there aswell. And dilwale team is doing full on promotion even after release to cover up bad wom by hype, regular strategy of srk.

          Like

        • It was Eros’ decision to stick to this date as they had to show some profits by the end of the year as their stock is going down. SLB did not want a clash initially.
This time luck supported SLB as Eros learnt something from SOS-JTHJ clash and pre-booked some major SS on the back of Bajrangi.
When the trailers of both films came out, I already had predicted such a situation will happen that Dilwale won’t touch 200 cr even and BM would atleast do 150.

It seems BM will remain a weekend deal because there is a set piece for this kind of movie which raves and rants ( recent example Tamasha ). On Dilwale very much like CE which the Anupama Chopra types were shocked to digest and written it off and after the initial disappointment & setbacks the movie found it general acceptance on the all India market.

    • reading all raghav and other like him crap here, I thought day 1 for dilwale was 12 crore and bm was 21 crore and day 2 dilwale was again lower than bm.

Now, let’s see what day 3 brings.

Personally I have no doubt about BM being a better film but when was that ever a question?

I’m again expecting day 3 BM to be 20 crore and Dilwale to be about 10 crore, right raghav? 🙂

  136. Saturday looks to be less than 20 crores for Dilwale. This is really the final nail on the coffin for SRK. I thought HNY would be a wake up call for him but I guess it was not. He’s about to have Dilwale finish in the range of Ra.1.

He honestly needs a complete makeover. Everywhere and everyone I talk to, I hear the same thing about how SRK does the same crap over again and also there’s just this negativity before every SRK film and he’s really just brought that upon himself. Also, the public opinion is just not on his side anymore. Idk, I was and am still a huge SRK fan but the past few movies aren’t forgivable. I understand making a Ra.1, it was his dream project…I understand having Don 2 come right after Ra.1 as a cushion. I understand JTHJ cause it was Yash Chopra’s last film and I understand CE. I have no idea why he tried to repeat a CE with HNY next, that was very dumb, and when HNY was not appreciated I don’t know why he made a similar looking film with Dilwale. I saw Dilwale, it isn’t bad at all, in fact better than HNY but that says nothing at all. He really should’ve had a FAN or Raees come out before Dilwale. Also, I have high hopes on those 2 films but at the same time I’ve almost lost complete confidence in SRK’s script sense now. I think his story sense is excellent- HNY, Dilwale, Raees, and FAN all sound pretty damn good if you hear the basic story but the script is another thing.
The good thing is that I with a couple of good solid films, I think he can definitely bounce back and then try another full on commercial film. But one thing that is certain is that the gap between #2 and #3 in the industry just multiplied ten fold this year…although given how poorly all actors have done this year, SRK is definitely safe in #3. I just hope Dilwale does more than Tanu Weds Manu so SRK at least has a Top 3 finish…assuming BM doesn’t do more than TWMR

  138. Dilwale And Bajirao Mastani Day Two Estimates
    Sunday 20 December 2015 01.30 IST

Dilwale is looking at a little drop in collections on Saturday as the circuits where it opened strongly are set to drop while others will be flat or up a little. If Mumbai circuit can make decent gains the film may have the same total as Friday otherwise it will be around the 20 crore nett mark. Some centres centres remained closed due to protests especially in CP Berar circuit.

The day two number is still good but like the Diwali release Prem Ratan Dhan Payo the film is not getting big numbers all over and here there is no holiday advantage either. The film is being held back in crucial areas like Mumbai, North and Central India. Mumbai is understandable as Bajirao Mastani is giving it good competition but North and Central will have to go up a level if it is to have a chance to get a big lifetime number.

Bajirao Mastani will show decent gains of 20-25% to take it to around the 15 crore nett mark as multiplexes in the big cities showed growth. The film really needed more growth but still has an outside chance if it can go on a run over the next few weeks.

    • WAIT, so BM is still not ahead of Dilwale, you fooled us all by spamming this blog with how BM is leading Dilwale in BMS, etc…

Please try your same agenda again for Day 3 and then at the end of the day tell us the big lead BM has on Dilwale.

By the way, what was the lifetime collection of your fav actors last film in lead role? I’ll make it easy for you, you can use last 10 years if you want 🙂

      • calm down…this hyper reaction to raghav isn’t all that necessary. SRK doesn’t need defending from anyone at this point of his career…to me he has already proved what he needed to prove.

      • There is nothing to be fooled unless you are one. I reiterated many times, BM is still leading on BMS bookings, not just in major cities but many smaller ones too. It is leading in all major cities except calcutta.
Anyone can see online ranking of booking on bms by selecting various cities, but it gives reflection on actual going on but never states how much is difference.
Also, this could be average of booking per screen, or total of ticket numbers sold. If that is the case, it doesnt mean bm collection in that city is more as dilwale has more shows and bigger capacity screens with them.
        http://in.bookmyshow.com/hyderabad
Also, BOI is already favoring dilwale by giving more than producers number while giving bm lower than producer’s numbers. Little correction they did yesterday and tomorrow again they should do some correction.

Even with lower totals,BM will emerge victorious and Dilwale will be seen as a loser.
That’s the truth- rest is hogwash.
As far as Aamirfan’s comment goes- SRK was trying to give a huge grosser like PK and BB with a very successful director,Kakol and a Varun to help him out and was trying to prove he can do what Aamir and Salman did. Unfortunately, he couldn’t so.
So, am not sure what you are talking about proving but he failed to prove that he is not the third amongst the Lhan today.

SRK has already reached the mountain top…its hard to stay there…if this his downfall…this is one helluva great ‘downfall’.

Tamaasha was my first ranbeer kapoor film, so he isn of my favorite. Baby and Gabbar are the only akshay film i saw on big screen among his last 7-8 outings in last 2 year. I havent seen shamitabh or Piku on big screen. So Akshay/Amitabh are not my favourite. I didnt care about Singham Returns just after finishing first 30 secs of its trailer, though i loved Singham which i reiterated many times. Singham was only last Ajay film i watched on big screen. II havent seen any Jr b movies since Dum Maaro Dum(which i truly loved, especially first half). So he is not my favorite either. I havent seen any Hrithik movie on Big screen since Jodhaa Akbar, so you think he is my favorite ?

So, i am still trying to figure out who is my favorite, if you know, let me know too. Yes, i have seen atleast 30 hollywood movies this year including many front runner in various award season and didnt care for Star wars/Jurrasic world, but i dont dislike bollywood or love hollywood movies as such, but i definitely like to ‘experience’ something novel/repetitive in theatre whatever it could be, but it should not be just outer experience.

Movie experience is about that one can appreciate, and if so many people have appreciated something i will give it a chance to see if it works for me too. I watched 30+ foreign movies this year, i didnt end up iking all of them, but watching them on basis of overall feedback didn’t disappoint me most of the times.

One thing is for sure .. BM wasted many single screens which could have collected higher Dilwale. Similarly Dilwale wasted many multiplex screens which could have collected better for BM.

At the end .. both gonna lose.

I’m amused as what happened to the “Biggest star” of the country along with the brand name of Rohit Shetty, Kajol, current heart-throb Varun Dhavan and that too in the same period when Aamir “NON” star Khan used to give record breakers almost on each occasion whenever he had a release. Now nobody has an easy answer except for the fact that Aamir chooses better stories yet i would call it half truth as the bigger USP of Aamir is the appropriate budgeting of the his movies based on their content and theme, which enables the movies at the very least return the investment on them. I would cite Talaash, 3 Idiots, PK, Dhobi Ghat, TZP, JTYJN and Peepli Live! as examples to prove my point as all of them were budgeted as per their potential and not based on Aamir’s brand value. They succeeded is well known fact, yet for a moment if we assume that they were to be flops, Aamir and concerned financiers would lose very meagre amount as right budgeting had given them cushion of not losing hefty amount on these ventures. So Aamir should be recognised for not over-budgeting and over-hyping his movies which often results in ensuring profit for all parties concerned with these movies, which is commendable as he also began profit sharing business in Hindi film industry where he would not charge a single penny upfront, but have shares in the profits of his movies. This measure gives a lot of financial liberty to filmmaker and his producers where they are not burdened with additional 25 Crores or more which can be utilised in the making of the film with out facing any financial hassles.

  142. Some Good comments by Krish, Raj5, Yakuza and MS Dhoni. The problem with us is that we are living in a mediocre times. once in a while when we see a decent work in any field we hail it as great. So its natural we get pathetic to decent to good movie. As fas ar Dilwale and Bajirao clash goes some points.

1- The best thing happened in this clash is that both side kept it civil. No mudsledging from either side.

2- Both got equal amount of publicity and almost disered Screens. Even during promotion Bajirao team got as many chance in Electronic and print media as Dilwale Team.

3- It was a forgone conclusion even before release that dilwale will be a regular Timepass film and Bajirao either Good or Bad there is no middle path for bajirao and now it turned out a good film so it is geting benifit. Though i wont write off Dilwale yet. Both film have almost 1 month open window.

4 – Many won’t admit but i knew that among 3 khans SRK will be the first to go on Downfall. The Problem with SRK is that He doesn’t have decent movies like Aamir and He is not critics proof like Salman

5- Though it is just coincidence but still it is poetic justice that it is Ranveer singh who took on SRK because in Present Generation only Ranveer comes close to SRK as far as off Screen persona goes. Though SRK is More intelligence and buisness accumen then any of his contemprory still Ranveer has many things what is take to be next SRK. That is why it is not coincidence that when Aditya chopra decided to take someone other then SRK in his film he choosed Ranveer.

6 – Bajirao again reaffirms my point that After Madhuri Dixit it is Priyanka Chopra who is the most complete Actress.

7- Last but the Most importent i am extremley happy for Ranveer. Finally he got that what he deserves. His next film is Aditya’s ‘Bifikre’. So next year he has all the best actor awards and a Hot movie not to forget A Hot girlfriend deepika. After seeing Tamasha and Bajirao’s BO performence i dont think Deepika will go to Ranbeer.
