  3. My first choice in Bollywood for directing Bajirao Mastani would be Ketan Mehta. Santoshi wouldn’t be a bad option either. Both these directors, on a good day, know how to make a kinetic film which in the wrong hands could become rather lumbering.

Also one of the potential risk in this sort of film considering the story is “tragic” is that if the last act becomes too self-indulgent, it will turn into a laughably bathetic. In other words, there is a risk of this becoming another Devdas

    • BTW I know it’s not perhaps possible, but how lovely it would be if the director-writer combo of Hariharan-Vasuden Nair (in their Oru Vadakkan Veergatha form, but not in Pazhassi Raja one) would take a crack at this subject. That really would have me salivating. OVV is simply the greatest Indian tragedy and historical I have seen on screen.

Exactly. It’s Bhansali’s self indulgence tendencies that will be the downfall. The most even and least Bhansali film IMO is HDDCS. The film of his I like most. More for Devgan than anything else.
Here it’s got to be a free flowing film with energy. His song placements jar his films badly but he does usually come with some stirring music.

      • I too like HDDS. Agreed on Devgn as as well (love that scene where he goes completely off pitch while singing Chingari Koi Bhadke, easily one of his career best moments). My favourite Bhansali film, and easily his most even most even films tonally, is Khamoshi. Unsurprisingly that is the only film where he characters don’t into some sort of la la land.

Actually I believe Black might be his fluid and least self-indulgent (or perhaps the lead performances are so good that they cover up for the directorial missteps. One of the reasons why I love AB here is because inspite of being given a rather overbearing character, he never allows it to lumber. Somehow the performance retains the “electric” quality, it has “speed”) especially given the fact that Bhansali was working with a subject which was giving him enough leeway to go overboard.

I also think on a technical/formal level, Bhansali is at the top of his game in Black and even more so in parts of Saawariya. With Guzaarish he becomes a far less interesting directing. And Ram Leela was so insipid; one just has to compare it with Ishaqzaade.

The other thing we often miss is that often the best choices for directing these sort of “epic” subjects are directors who have earlier worked on a much smaller scale or made “edgy” films. Because then something truly new can come out of the subject or atleast the subject will get a twist. The best example here is Kashyap’s version of Devdas. Or Ketan “Hero Hiralal/Bhavani Bhavai” Mehta working on Mangal Pandey. Or outside Bollywood, Soderbergh, who made really small budget films like Sex, Lies and Videotape, handling a subject like Che.

      • Agree on all counts. HDDCS is the only Bhansali film I like and it’s only because of Ajay Devgan’s performance.

I might actually see “‘Bajirao Mastani” despite not being fond of any of the cast members. Even though Bhansali’s visual style and emotional pitch aren’t to my taste I appreciate the fact that he has a distinct voice. Engaging with one’s “opposites” can be quite rewarding.

    • Saurabh – if it has to be the first choice then who else than Rajamouli!!! but next can be Shankar also and SLB is not too bad…….and actresses like DP can overpower director’s self-indulgence by just being in the frame……….SLB is on a safer ground here only because of DP.

      • I would never even think of Rajamouli because he is not a director who is interested in any sort of political or religious subtext. Unless one wants Bajirao Mastani to be like Baahubali (which is NOT a historical, but a pure fantasy! It’s actually not even a historical fantasy which is to say it is not even like Dharam Veer), I am not sure why one would think of Rajamouli. And Shankar, as interesting as he is, also doesn’t have the skill to do deal with a subject. I am also scared that in his version of the film, a quasi realistic music-video will arrive where we will see Bajirao’s arrow turning into a Nintendo Gameboy! Or he might just have Bajrao moonlighting as a vigilante 🙂 !

On Deepika playing Mastani, let’s just say that it looks like a stick-figure trying to be a Maratha princess. I would have preferred Vidya to be doing this part (with her being paired opposite a slightly older Bajirao, Ranveer Singh is just too young to gave developed any sort of gravitas for this role. Devgn wouldn’t have been a bad choice actually) not the least she is far “curvier” than Deepika (and it helps that she is a far better actress). Then again folks might want be looking for a female action-figure here for which Deepika is apt!

        • Incidentally outside of Bollywood, Priyamani wouldn’t be a bad choice for Mastani. She has the necessary acting chops and she also has the physique (for those who don’t know about her, she played Abhishek’s sister in Raavan). The accent might be a problem, but I am certain that even here she will do a far better job speaking Marathi than Deepika.

He works best in the fantasy genre- Eega, Baahubali, Yamadonga and portions of Magadheera set in the past. He has never made a historical though.

        • there lies the catch – whatever genre he tries – he succeeds – and just because he hasn’t made a historical – doesn’t mean that he can’t succeed there. In fact – chances of he can are greater

          Like

        • Actually the only catch here is the “meaning” of “successful”- in this context for you it means a box office hit, for me it means a good film. And Rajamouli has made only 2 truly good films- Eega and Baahubali (some of the portions of Yamadongs are enjoyable, but that’s more or less about it). Otherwise he has also made some real stinkers- Chhatrapati for instance. And his “Sye” must be the worst film made on any sport, compared to it Awwal Number seems like Raging Bull. And its rugby scenes are staged worse than some of the badminton scenes between Jeetendra and Leena Chandavarkar in Humjoli! No, I mean it.

        • Yamadonga had an amazing concept, but the execution left a lot to be desired — once NTR Jr. returns to the world the film just went downhill…

[I have a weakness for this idea of a mortal being stuck in the underworld, and then trying to cheat the Gods in some way — and NTR Jr. has the whole impish persona, and makes for a great trickster (sadly the film wasn’t equal to the task); even in comic books, perhaps my single favorite team story has been Avengers (Vol. 1) #s 281-285, where the the team is stuck in Olympus and must battle the Greek gods to get out…]

But Rajamouli has that problem in Magadheera as well, the sequences in the past are really done well, but the ones in the present are quite poor. I think that’s why Baahubali because the entire film is set in an unspecified time period in the past and plays out like a fantasy (I mean you have Rana pummelling a bison with his bare hands!).

  4. I was waiting to the teaser ever since Bhansali suggested that the only reason he cannot cast Akshay Kumar in his directed film is because Akshay will not give him 180 days for a film. When I read I thought Baajirao Mastaani must be a magum opus….but sorry sir…Akshay is smart enough to use his dates wisely!!!
I would have him in Airlift any day over this.
Main problem with this teaser – Genre
Baahubali stole the show in this genre and by the time this movie releases, whole of India would have seen Baahubali on television. So the sets shown in this teaser is grand but looks poor when compared to Rajamouli’s blockbuster.
Tamannah Bhatia looked prettier than Deepika and Priyanka combines in the teaser so far. They are more dressed like maids than a princess.

  5. I like HDDCS his best followed by Ram Leela. Khamosi had momemst but doesn’t work as a whole. Saawariya was boring from the word go. The first part of Black was very good as it followed ‘ The Miracle Worker’ faithfully. But it was spoilt by a bachhanalian secind laf , with all the excessses, adding Alzhiemers to deaf-and- muteness and so on. Guzaarish was a shade btter than Saawariya but very uneven and disparate elements put together. Devdas was okay in parts but Shahrukh failed totally in being Devdas and the film could capture the tragedy only fleetingly. In HDDCS he had managed to strike a delectable blanace between style and substance, narrative flow and auteristic flourish. He got his mojo back in Ram Leela . Waht I loved about Ram Leela is that he seemed to have learnt from mkaers like Kashyap and Vishal Bharadwaj and now his films are more griitier. The landscape is more earthy, the relationships more sensual and the characters talk dirty. The songs are weaved into the narrative more meanigfully and have high energy. Nagada, lahu muhn laga gaya, Ram Chaahe Leela, Ishquian Dishquiyan, Ang Laga De and Tattad Tattad are all very watchable. Bhansali couldn’t have done a song like Ishquian Dishquiyan before seeing Beedi Jalaile and lsoing his inhibition. Courtesey influnces of Kashyap and Bharadwaj, Bhansali handles vilolence and bloodshed with more elan now. With Ram Leela there is a more masculine, less arty, less inhibited Bhansali; and that gives me hope for Bajirao Mastani.

  6. Khamoshi was kind of too arty. Guzaarish had some truly poetic passages and the production design was top-class but for me the story-telling didnt hold together. Becuase unlike HDDCS which started with a genuine core of a touching story, Guzaarish was put together by borrowing diffeent elements from different Western fims. The Westernized ambience of both Guzaarsh and Black also kind of put me off. That’s why I like HDDCS and Ram Leela for their rooted and earthy Indian ambience and fluid story-telling.

Theres no excitement for me though, I, as a consumer, don’t want to see at least Deepika in this sort of role. I prefer to watch her when she is doing comedy or those half serious romantic roles. But still, I have faith in SLB’s ability to tell a story on a large scale.

  13. the trailer is certainly effective. The issues are the usual ones with Bhansali. He’s never learnt the rather elementary lesson that if every scene of a movie is so visually ‘overwhelming’ after a while it seizes to have any effect, even becomes ‘too much’. This is true for anything. If you have 10 car chases in a film no matter how well they’re done by the time you get to the 4th one you’re bored. The operatic mode has to be handled with care. In Bhansali it often drowns out everything else. But the other thing here is that this looks very much like a contemporary Chinese epic. There are recognizable cues Bhansali has picked up in this sense. Finally Ranbir’s look is fine, probably looks better here than elsewhere but he lacks gravitas. And Deepika at least in the brief moments she has looks silly. It’s not hard to imagine a success of some sort here but it’s highly unlikely that Bhansali is otherwise making something very watchable here. The trailer though is nonetheless effective and would have been helped by better casting choices.

  17. The 30% remaining to be shot is for unforeseen, maneuver and leave some room to back down from the release date. The promo is a let down for sure and surprisingly the trump card Deepika may be the weakest link and her diction will play an important part in this historical. Ranveer was always a weak choice for this subject.

Someone mentioned similarities with Lal Pathar of Hema and vibes are pretty similar. It may meet the same fate box office wise if it comes as stand alone movie with no controversies. SLB should worry and a negative turn will easily collpase this into a extreme dislike/low total because the actors like the ones in BV do not have not much standing with audience.

I still maintain Deepika has a high profile release around Nov 28th with Ranbir and will be doing the rounds for publicity prior to that and BM is too close to this. Audience may simply tire out of fatigue seeing similar faces constantly for such a long period of time. I am assuming after all the noise and publicity one movie is going to shift.

    • Bajirao Mastani has double the budget of Dilwale and that can only be recovered by having a good release date. i.e. 18th Dec. There are 5 full weeks without any big film after that giving enough time to both films to make huge bucks. personally, don’t think anybody should shift.

like someone born to be a queen.
But behind those silks and satins
    Aren’t you that grungy Veronica?
Dragging Meera’s luggage over the steep staircase
    Pulling a first-time date closer
As the DJ played Sharabi, and you go crazy on the floor.
Thinking that if you held a man tight enough
The pain of your parents never phoning you
Will somehow melt away, like the ice cubes in your vodka glass.
You look so poised, so full of gravitas – is that the word?-
But doesn’t the twinkle in your eye suggest
You can anytime break into a mock welcoming bow
And say, ‘Aap Guatam ke mom hain? This way please!’
Or flutter a mischievous lash and feign having been wronged
‘That is his bun in my oven!’
But knowing real pain is good education
And you had your first heartbreak
And you wanted to smash that mirror into smithereens
But in the end , Viru Paji,
Gautam is not what it was all about,
It was about finding yourself ,
through the fire of pain, suffering and loneliness.
    And you did.
Yes, you look all heavy and grounded and queenly and all that
But can you cloak the impetuous Leela under those folds?
    Remember how you surprised Ram
By kissing him on his lips, the very first time you set eyes on him?
Now which man won’t like that?
Lahu moonh lag gaya, Ram was left wondering.
    And your risqueun Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun
Where you could finally drop your last shred of inhibition
And laugh at your own seismic sensuality.
But no you never lost your innocence
    Through this rites of passage
You could ask a cocky Shahrukh
From where he bought that bakwas dictionary
Which didn’t have the word ‘impossible’
    And completely floor him.
And he could carry you over those 300 hill steps
    You in your virginal white
As easily as he was carrying a wispy hansini.
    Bajirao better watch out.
Svelte and sexy you may be,
From head to toe, spelling out love.
But you are no push over, when push comes to shove
    For you are Piku
Who can love without judging, yes,
    But on her own terms.
Little girl blue, looking for love, yes
But not with just curls and pinks
Also a bit of quirks, and a lot of kinks.
    A real woman, then.

  28. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming movie Bajirao Mastani has been in the news since its trailer has been out. And recently when the new song of the film, ‘Pinga’ was released, the reactions have been mixed from all the sections. Some praised the song and Priyanka Chopra-Deepika Padukone performance, some criticised it. According to a leading daily, now Mohini Karkarey, who is a descendant of the Peshwas, has written an open letter to Bhansali where she has hit out at him. In the letter she has claimed that Kashibai could not have danced because she was suffering from arthritis. Karkarey has also claimed that Mastani was not a courtesan, but the daughter of Raja Chatrasaal of Bundelkhand.

Here is the text of the full letter:

    Mr Bhansali,

The time has now come to speak out, to speak out against the picturization in the song and certain scenes from your movie, Bajirao Mastani. The latest song Pinga and the dance sequence which you have promoted have a lot of undesirable elements. This is not fiction, Mr Bhansali. You have portrayed real people who have been recorded in history. The Peshwas ruled for more than 100 years. Did you do any research at all? Did you, for instance, understand the life and times of people in the 1700s? Do you know and understand their behavioural pattern?

Here are a few recorded facts for your perusal:
Fact 1: Kashibai Saheb was suffering from tuberculosis and had arthritis. Due to this she had a limp.
Fact 2: Kashibai would never get into a dance routine even if she was healthy because that was not in the culture.
Fact 3: The costumes shown in the song Pinga were never worn by royal families or even normal women. The way the nauvari was draped did not show even an ounce of skin.
Fact 4: Kashibai and Mastani met only once in their lifetime and that too formally.
Fact 5: Kashibai was the daughter of Mahadji Krishna Joshi from Chaas and was known as Chaskar Joshi. Her descendants are still alive.
Fact 6: Mastani was not a courtesan or dancer. She was the daughter of Raja Chatrasaal of Bundelkhand. She was married to Bajirao and was his second wife. Mastani’s descendants, the Nawabs of Banda, will give you enough proof of this.
Proof of all the facts is available on Peshwe Gharanyacha Itihas by Mr Pramod Oak and you will find plenty more proof here in Peshwe Daptar.
Bajirao was a great warrior second only to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. With this so called love story, you have made a mockery of him. You have insulted the very essence of Maharashtrian families. This will definitely create a flawed image about such a great personality and his family.

    Yours sincerely,
    Mohini Karkarey

  31. Not impressive, like with most SLB trailers its more about style than substance, very little here other than a few dialogues and some overstuffed shots of sets, Deepika is a massive miscast. I don’t expect this to give Dilwale any problems. Dilwales success will be down to the quality of its screenplay, if its rubbish it will tank like prdp and if its good it might trend similar to CE.

It’s a trailer of over 3 mins with more than half of it focusing on the love story, the rest focusing on some kind of build-up to war and then you get some 5 seconds footage of the war which look like the least impressive part of everything. 39. Leaving all the grandeur and SFX/CGI aside, before making periodicals, the makers should at least ensure that the actors master the diction/delivery of those places and times. Deepika’s urdu (or is it her hindi, cant really decipher) is atrocious to say the least. Priyanka is hardly any better. Both of them have butchered routine words like “khata”, “bagawat”, “guroor”, etc. Ranveer cannot pull off any weighted dialogue even if his life depended on it. Gravitas is an emotion completely alien to his personality, and it shows here tellingly. He seems so forced and presumptuous. Even Hrithik somehow mumbled his way through JA. Thankfully, Ash had been restricted to earthy Hindi, instead of any attempt at Urdu. Maybe Ive just been spoilt with the unmatched delivery of Dilip, Amit, Meena, Nutan, Waheeda et al. But this is really unpardonable.

    • But must say that Pri/Dee have certainly excelled in Pinga, perhaps even bettered Mads/Ash by a tad. The big positive is the music itself. Despite their spectacular dance choreography, the music of Dola Re was just excruciating cacophony. Pinga is much more smoother, gentler music, and the two of them look really sultry/stunning here.

    • I don’t except good urdu from the present actors who can’t even speak hindi properly.

      Like

    • Why anyone has to master urdu ? These are not even muslim characters, hindi was influenced by urdu and thus mixed in it. And this movie is set during decline of mughal era. Even during peak of mughal era Muslims were not with perfect urdu diction leave aside hindus. And why these characters need to have PHD in urdu? Even today, muslims in muslim countries can’t speak urdu properly.
I would agreed on this statement, if it was mugle azam, i could have agreed to some extent. Even if someone is making Documentary on mugle azam, characters don’t have to speak perfect urdu or any language to perfection that audience can’t understand.
Mugle azam was itself commercial cinema, and BM is no less commercial, so can have more liberty.
Also, i wont like to see characters speak in perfect diction, that normal audience can’t understand the dialogues. Indians never speak in any perfect diction, our languages are always mixed and imperfect diction, and everyone speaks differently, still people understand very well.
We don’t need to give language so much importance. It is medium of communication, and as long as one conveys it, that’s enough. Even without dialogues, i would like any trailer where display of emotion is strong without spoken words. Don’t we have classic silent movies, which betters any modern cinema.

    Few Points on Bajirao Mastani

    Positives

1- If we talk about grandeur. It is almost 10/10
2- Grandeur will insure that a section of audience will definetly will check out this movie in theatre.
3- If we talk about Bajirao…Ranveer is fine choice as there are very few actor who can play a King.
4- Songs are good if not great and insync with Film
5- Looking at Trailer it doesn’t look that there is too much self indulgence of SLB.
6 – If Tamasha and Deepika gets appreciation then it will surley help Bajirao Mastani.because so far Deepika is looking most miscast actor in BM.

    Negatives

    1- Deepaika is massive miscast
2- Though i agree with Raghav that we don’t need actors with Perfect diction either in Hindi or Urdu but here in BM Actors diction is horrible. Even in routine films Ranveer and Deepika has poor voice and in this film thier Dilouge Dilivery is pathetic.
3- Historically…….Historical film doesn’t perform good in BO. Even Jodha-Akbar is just a Hit film despite it came in the best phase of Hrithik and Aish was in top form too and they came after Dhoom 2. Grandeur of JA is as good as BM and Song were way better then BM.
4- SLB has this great habit of self indulgence. Promo are good but in film you never know.
5- This is most importent. As they say Ujad bhi gai to Dilli hai. It is True for SRK too. Nowadays SRK is not in Top form still he is a force to reckone with. SRK-Kajol Jodi..Rohit Shetty entertainer..christmas and New year time..Killer combo.

    • the film looks grand for sure but otherwise (and judging by the trailer) it’s a collection of moments taken from all kinds of cinema. First off the battle scenes and the gear especially makes this look like the Crusades! Then you have (as Z pointed out) the 300-like moments. You also have some Chinese period spectacle references. There’s very little here that seems fresh in this sense though I don’t disagree it’s been compellingly put together as these things go (barring the CGI in one of the sequences which makes the horses look insect-like!). Deepika seems to be dressed for a costume event (one of those theme parties), Ranveer himself doesn’t have the gravitas for the part. I could say something about the music too. My point isn’t that this film cannot work for an audience, just that it’s possible to make a grand spectacle that even visual cues that reference other traditions can make the overall result seem fresher than here. But otherwise Bhansali has the kind of ‘opulence’ that works with audiences as opposed to say Gowariker on JA (though ironically his effort was much better researched in this sense). So again I think the trailer is compelling enough (if one is a fan of Bhansali especially, which I am not). But I do think, and leaving aside my other criticisms (which are probably not a problem for the audience) that the lead pair ought to have been much stronger. That doesn’t mean it cannot be a success.

  44. Liked the promos of BM
The people who seem to have problems with bhansali basically have some issues themselves. The guy has a certain style of film making which if u don’t like, u should stay away from them. But it’s neither illegal nor inappropriate nor improper to use a certain operatic even loud cinematic tones and actually it fits in with this quasi-historical theme.

Bhansali has a certain vision and he has pumped his life n effort into it and that’s what’s important. There are umpteen proposals or manufactured hits that abound that are v poor in quality with which people don’t have problems in. So why this?

The problem is the much bigger simultaneous release of SRKs Dilwale who has a v astute business sense besides a more accessible theme.

And bhansalis Kaam leela had lots of skin show and lascivious content that pleased many utkals
But here that’s not the case

Deepika has not worn so many clothes in her entire career that she has in this one film!

    • I hadn’t even spent time on watching the trailers and other stuff for BM but this is really pretty bad. VAAT LAVLI? Huh? In 17th century? Thankfully Bhansali didn’t use the F word!

This ‘boisterousness’ if not completely out of character for the Marathas is for sure not the entirety Nykavi. The Marathas and Peshwas were more into what the great Bush called ‘surgical’ strikes during his invasion of Iraq. They were more into guerilla warfare than full-on confrontation. Tanaji Malusare famously used ‘ghorpad’ to scale the Singhad fort to smash the Mughals. Baji Rao employed the ‘sea’ to its fullest capacity. He used other tactics like rapid troop movement, attacking from the rear, and forcing the enemy to chance directions.

With Bhansali at the helm, forget Marathas; one can just ctrl +f and ctrl +r with ANY other rulers in India and the net result would be the same — everything set in BHANSALIPUR and told from Bhansali’s version of romance in the 17th century..

Ranveer’s accent is pathetic. He tries hard to get the Marathi-accented Hindi in some scenes and then goes back to his own accent in some!

Gowariker was equally pathetic with JODHAA AKBAR. The battle-field scenes looked as though there were 100s of children trying to find their way home!

And less said about the heroines, the better.

Basically, this is a raja-rani CHANDAMAMA story being passed off as the story of Bajirao..

And DILWALE doesn’t even need to have content!

Don’t know how the rest of India will react, but for sure I can tell you that the even Maharashtrians would hardly vouch for this..

there were a lot of unnecessary characters and their sub plots which actually make the movie uninteresting. for eg. Varun’s friend (thief) and his love story were boring. it should not have been part of this film. similarly boman irani’s character was not necessary.

overall I would give 3.5 for the first half and 2 for the second half.
