Abzee’s Oscar Predix for the year in film 2015

With just a week to go before the nominations for the 88th Academy Awards are announced, and a day prior to the ballots being closed for the same… here then, in keeping with my annual tradition, are my predictions (in alphabetical order) for the Oscars 2016.

Best Picture
THE BIG SHORT
CAROL
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
SPOTLIGHT
THE REVENANT

bigshort1-590x308

I’ll probably regret not including THE MARTIAN in this list, but over the past few weeks THE BIG SHORT is gaining late season traction; and with its Academy friendly ensemble, I suspect it will sneak in at the expense of the one-man show from Mars. But how cool is it to have FURY ROAD in that lineup, and an almost sure lock at that.

If the Academy goes with 6 films in this category, then naturally the film that gets in will be
THE MARTIAN
If they nominate 7, then
INSIDE OUT
If 8,
BRIDGE OF SPIES
9,
STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
And when 10,
ROOM

The gritty SICARIO has every chance of getting in as well, while BROOKLYN is a dark horse. CREED and EX MACHINA are long shots.

Best Director
Todd Haynes CAROL
Alejandro Inarritu THE REVENANT
Tom McCarthy SPOTLIGHT
George Miller MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
Ridley Scott THE MARTIAN

carol-xlarge

Steven Spielberg is always a threat, and the Cold War setting of his historical drama-thriller BRIDGE OF SPIES could very well see him in the final five. Lenny Abrahamson for ROOM and Ryan Coogler for CREED are dark horses. Adam McKay for THE BIG SHORT is a long shot that is looking less and less like one and getting more formidable.

Best Actor in a Leading Role
Bryan Cranston TRUMBO
Matt Damon THE MARTIAN
Leonardo DiCaprio THE REVENANT
Michael Fassbender STEVE JOBS
Eddie Redmayne THE DANISH GIRL

revenant-leo

Michael B. Jordan is a very formidable threat for CREED, while Johnny Depp for BLACK MASS is still a dark horse siphoning votes from the base that want this to be his comeback. Steve Carell for THE BIG SHORT and Will Smith for CONCUSSION are long shot surprises.

Best Actress in a Leading Role
Cate Blanchett CAROL
Brie Larson ROOM
Charlotte Rampling 45 YEARS
Saoirse Ronan BROOKLYN
Lily Tomlin GRANDMA

45-years-main-xlarge

Jennifer Lawrence is reaching default nomination status, so she is a dark horse for JOY especially given that it is helmed by David Russell who has directed her to 2 Oscar noms translating into 1 Oscar win. If it were not for category fraud lobbying, Rooney Mara could very well be in the final five for CAROL alongside her fellow actress from the film Cate Blanchett.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Idris Elba BEASTS OF NO NATION
Mark Rylance BRIDGE OF SPIES
Michael Shannon 99 HOMES
Sylvester Stallone CREED
Jacob Tremblay ROOM

99-homes

Expect Benicio Del Toro to be very much in here for his work in SICARIO, especially if the Academy members feel wary about acknowledging Elba given that he is part of a film that represents a shift in the way films could be made and viewed in the future. Mark Ruffalo for SPOTLIGHT is a dark horse since they may want somebody to represent this fine ensemble.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Jennifer Jason Leigh THE HATEFUL EIGHT
Rooney Mara CAROL
Rachel McAdams SPOTLIGHT
Alicia Vikander EX MACHINA
Kate Winslet STEVE JOBS

rachel-mcadams-spotlight

This is a strange year for this category. Alicia Vikander has had a breakthrough year, and she should ideally be getting leading nominations for her work in both THE DANISH GIRL and EX MACHINA, but the precursor campaign has been a confused one with her being nominated leading at one critics body and supporting at another for either performances. Same with Rooney Mara for CAROL- hers is in fact a rather obscene strategy by the makers to net both leading and supporting awards for both actresses. One fears that in the confusion, older members of the Academy may just not bother and we could see Mara and especially Vikander go home without any nom in what is a deserving year for both of them. Category fraud has also meant that actual worthy supporting turns from Jane Fonda in YOUTH and Kristen Stewart in CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA are languishing on the outside waiting to get in. Elizabeth Banks has also had a good year and she too is a dark horse for LOVE & MERCY, while Helen Mirren in TRUMBO is a formidable threat.

Best Foreign Film
EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT Colombia
THE FENCER Finland
LABYRINTH OF LIES Germany
MUSTANG France
SON OF SAUL Hungary

labyrinth-of-lies

Ireland’s VIVA can potentially crash this party, while Denmark’s A WAR and Jordan’s THEEB are long shots.

Best Original Screenplay
BRIDGE OF SPIES Matt Charman, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen
THE HATEFUL EIGHT Quentin Tarantino
SICARIO Taylor Sheridan
SPOTLIGHT Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer
STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Andrea Berloff and Jonathan Herman

54e8a290dcb61036b70b3efb4bb3e81a82ce184a

INSIDE OUT is very likely to be in the final five given Pixar’s Academy run. EX MACHINA and Alex Garland is a long shot.

Best Adapted Screenplay
THE BIG SHORT Adam McKay
CAROL Phyllis Nagy
THE MARTIAN Drew Godard
ROOM Emma Donoghue
STEVE JOBS Aaron Sorkin

the-martian-tif_rss_0001_fr_n_left-1001r_rgb

One can never rule out Charlie Kaufman, and so his ANOMALISA can very well get in here… as can Nick Hornby’s BROOKLYN. John McNamara’s screenplay for TRUMBO is also a dark horse.

Best Cinematography
BRIDGE OF SPIES Janusz Kaminski
CAROL Edward Lachman
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD John Seale
THE REVENANT Emmanuel Lubezki
SICARIO Roger Deakins

file_611766_sicario-trailer-emily-blunt-clouds-320

Robert Richardson for THE HATEFUL EIGHT is a dark horse, while Dariusz Wolski for THE MARTIAN is also primed to finally get his first nomination.

Best Editing
THE BIG SHORT Hank Corwin
CREED Claudia Castello and Michael P. Shaver
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Jason Ballantine and Margaret Sixel
THE MARTIAN Pietro Scalia
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey

ff_madmax_f-1024x429

My decision to bet against THE REVENANT (Stephen Mirrione) may prove to be unwise, but THE FORCE AWAKENS has got to show up in some major category and it has already been honoured by the American Cinema Editors award. SPOTLIGHT (Tom McArdle) is also a dark horse, while SICARIO (Joe Walker) is a long shot.

Best Original Score
BRIDGE OF SPIES Thomas Newman
THE DANISH GIRL Alexandre Desplat
INSIDE OUT Michael Giacchino
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS John Williams
STEVE JOBS Daniel Pemberton

inside-out-control-panel

CAROL and THE HATEFUL EIGHT both have more than better odds to make it to the final five, the former will net Carter Burwell his first nomination while the latter will add another feather to the cap of Ennio Morricone. But I also have a feeling that they will give those two slots – the new entrant to the club and the old veteran – to Daniel Pemberton and perennial default nominee John Williams respectively. Howard Shore’s minimalist score for SPOTLIGHT is a dark horse and could show up if the film turns up in big numbers come nominations day.

Quite unexpected love for THE REVENANT here. SPOTLIGHT is suddenly very vulnerable, having lost out on Screenplay even. Meanwhile, the Comedy category just gets increasingly stupid every passing year. Ridley Scott rolled his eyes as he accepted Best Picture Comedy, and even shook his head in the negative to the film’s classification as comedy. Winslet’s win too was completely unexpected, and once again points out to the utter confusion in this category this year, and the subsequent unpredictability.

It was a night more strange than anything else. From Ricky Gervais’ irreverent act and insistence on the uselessness of these awards routine was initially funny but grew in annoyance as the night progressed. There was a genuinely scary moment between him and Mel Gibson and it looked like Gibson was going to throw a punch in. Ridley Scott and Taraji Henson pretty much gave the middle finger to the online editors of the show when prompted to wrap up their acceptance speech, the former curt about it while the latter, visibly high on spirits, justified by stating that she and her fans waited for this moment for years, so the editors might as well wait a few seconds longer. Denzel Washington had a senior citizen moment, and his acceptance of the DeMille lifetime achievement award was strangely anticlimactic after the glowing intro given by Tom Hanks. The best moment of the night was perhaps DiCaprio candidly laughing at Lady Gaga winning a GG for acting and then giving her a stink-eye as she passed him to receive it. The gif has already gone viral.

  3. “Most of all, I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I’ve ever had,”

Stallone thanking Rocky Balboa has to be the most genuine and classiest line of the evening and also the standing ovation was well deserved. (btw Stallone and Salman are totally in awe of each other as per twitter exchanges) .

Considering the current financial meltdown / context, Big Short should have definitely won something and esp liked Christian Bale performance ( not seen Revenant / DeCaprio).

Globes need to reexamine the process for what qualifies as comedy since everyone is mocking this award. That’s an insult to the the survival story.

Why The Martian Winning The Golden Globes’ Best Comedy Sucks For Real Comedies

“The Martian was a fantastic movie. It’s the best movie I saw in 2015. If anybody asks, I will happily vote to give The Martian virtually any award it wants. The acting is tremendous; the direction is great; and the cinematography is wonderful. The screenplay was close to perfect. The Martian is many things, but what it’s not is a comedy – and it’s why tonight’s big win at the Golden Globes has an unfortunate downside……”

  4. This video is mark of super-stardom ! It is really never over until it’s over –

In the press room, Stallone admitted to still being shocked after his win. “I didn’t expect it at all, and I don’t remember a standing ovation. Was there really?” he told reporters. “I was promising myself that I would be very aware the whole time. It proves I am not aware and I got caught up in the emotion. Just the mere fact that these incredible people were applauding, it makes me realize in life, it is really never over until it’s over. It indicates that people should never give up trying.”

  5. With less than an hour to go before the Oscar nominations are read out, I have some last minute jitters! I think The Revenant is going to do better than I expected, Lily Tomlin seems way too risky a call, have a hunch the Supporting Actor category is going to throw some ugly surprise our way (by way of snub or inclusion) and Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander still can go either all-in or all-out!

Chris Rock will once again take the stage as the host of the Oscars telecast. Rock, 50, hosted the awards ceremony back in 2005, where he received mostly positive reviews for the gig.

But like most hosts, he did manage to ruffle a few feathers by taking some jabs at the entertainment industry – and this year is sure to be no different.

On the rest, I would say you had better crystal gazing with previous forecasts.

    • That Best Actor category frankly was the only reaching any kind of lock status over the past few days. But it’s nice to get a full-house. I’d like to think I have a full-house with Best Supporting Actress as well, especially given that the category was just all over the place. Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Score really had me stumped. Way off the mark. Director, Editing, Foreign Film and Original Screenplay also was average, though I’m glad to have been vindicated in sticking out my neck for Straight Outta Compton and The Force Awakens. The remaining categories I’m happy’ with what I got and what I didn’t.

      • I think you were on the mark with ‘Best Actress in a leading role’ nominations too but Jennifer Lawrence ( have not seen Joy ) is somewhat becoming a default factor in these award nominations / season……on the lines of Meryl Streep and ‘sexy’ Cate Blanchett.

    Alejandro Inarritu THE REVENANT
    Tom McCarthy SPOTLIGHT
Adam McKay for THE BIG SHORT

    Charlotte Rampling 45 YEARS
    Saoirse Ronan BROOKLYN
Marksheet- I had a feeling Tomlin was losing steam, and was right on Lawrence reaching default nominee status. 4/5

Best Actor in a Supporting Role
    Christian Bale THE BIG SHORT
    Tom Hardy THE REVENANT
    Mark Ruffalo SPOTLIGHT
    Mark Rylance BRIDGE OF SPIES
    Sylvester Stallone CREED
Marksheet- 2/5. So my gut feeling of this category throwing up a surprise proved right… but I didn’t expect three big surprises. I had Ruffalo as a dark horse, but couldn’t see Bale and Hardy coming at all. Bale, with his surprise nom for American Hustle and now this, seems like an Academy fav. And Hardy proves the theory that even if DiCaprio loses, he is always a good luck charm for his male co-stars to get nominated (Alan Alda, Jonah Hill, Mark Wahlberg)

Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Jennifer Jason Leigh THE HATEFUL EIGHT
    Rooney Mara CAROL
    Rachel McAdams SPOTLIGHT
    Alicia Vikander THE DANISH GIRL
    Kate Winslet STEVE JOBS
Marksheet- I have either got 4/5 or 5/5, depending on ow you look at it. I had Vikander for Ex Machina, but given how confused her campaign was (and Mara’s as well), it was a toss up between Ex Machina and The Danish Girl or nothing at all. As it stands, Vikander got in for the latter, and thankfully Mara got in for Carol too, even though both are category frauds.

    Best Foreign Film
    EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT Colombia
    MUSTANG France
    SON OF SAUL Hungary
    THEEB Jordan
    A WAR Denmark
Marksheet- 3/5. I had Denmark and Jordan for long shots, but guess they were surer than I guessed.

    Best Original Screenplay
BRIDGE OF SPIES Matt Charman, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen
    EX MACHINA Alex Garland
INSIDE OUT Josh Cooley, Pete Docter and Meg LeFauve
SPOTLIGHT Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer
STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Andrea Berloff and Jonathan Herman
Marksheet- 3/5. I kinda had a feeling that Inside Out would get in, but Ex Machina I had for a long shot.

    Best Adapted Screenplay
    THE BIG SHORT Adam McKay
    BROOKLYN Nick Hornby
    CAROL Phyllis Nagy
    THE MARTIAN Drew Godard
    ROOM Emma Donoghue
Marksheet- 4/5. I had Hornby as a possible nominee, but didn’t stick my neck out. Surprisingly then, Aaron Sorkin whom I had in my list and who won Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes is the one booted out here!

    Best Cinematography
    CAROL Edward Lachman
    THE HATEFUL EIGHT Robert Richardson
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD John Seale
    THE REVENANT Emmanuel Lubezki
    SICARIO Roger Deakins
Marksheet- 4/5. Had Richardson as a dark horse.

    Best Editing
    THE BIG SHORT Hank Corwin
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Jason Ballantine and Margaret Sixel
    THE REVENANT Stephen Mirrione
    SPOTLIGHT Tom McArdle
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey
Marksheet- 3/5. I was unwise to have betted against The Revenant, and Spotlight has come true on its dark horse status.

    Best Original Score
    BRIDGE OF SPIES Thomas Newman
    CAROL Carter Burwell
    THE HATEFUL EIGHT Ennio Morricone
    SICARIO Johann Johannsson
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS John Williams

      • Thank you! Carol is really the big snub in these nominations. It seemed sure for Best Picture and Best Director. Ridley Scott missing out for The Martian is also an unexpected snub, this after he remarked at the Golden Globes that he was beginning to think that he will be recognized for his work posthumously! Although frankly, the voting for Oscars were closed by then. The Academy has really rallied behind Fury Road I am glad to note. But The Revenant is sneaking up on Spotlight for frontrunner status. I do not want to say this is DiCaprio’s year finally and jinx it. Doh!

pleasantly surprised with the nominations Mad Max have got. It, I believe, is slowly turning out to be the dark horse. Dont really think Spotlight has a chance of winning; it might end up being close between The Revenant and Mad Max. And I wont be surprised if the latter ends up inching close to the former w.r.t jury votes.

Good to see Inside Out gathering the best original screenplay nomination, that was a delightful addition. But sad to see that, being a Tarantino fan, The Hateful Eight losing out. But not surprising, given it hasn’t got extraordinary reviews this year.

Watched The Revenant the other day, and boy was it amazing! Leonardo might just win for it. I hope he does, not because it’s been overdue for him, but I want people to move on with their lives and stop making a hulaboo of it.

DiCaprio, 41, won a Golden Globe for “The Revenant” and is seen by many pundits as the one who will win the best actor Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony on Feb. 28.

“I do think it probably will be, I think you can sort of feel it. And I think that everyone wants it for him and it would be amazing,” Winslet told Reuters at the Critics’ Circle Film Awards in London on Sunday night.

“But it’s also slightly difficult for me too because Michael Fassbender has been nominated … and I think his performance is so extraordinary. But … I think you can sort of feel the temperature, it’s probably going to be Leo’s year.”

The 88th Annual Academy Awards have proved to be very lucky for handsome hunk Leonardo DiCaprio. After being nominated five times at the Oscars, Leo finally managed to grab home the coveted gold trophy for Best Actor for his role in ‘The Revenant’.

Applauds and whistles knew no bound when the actors’ name was announced.

When Leo graced the stage to accept his award, he made sure to acknowledge and thank everyone for his victory.

    Here’s what he said:

DiCaprio said of director Alejandro Irritu, who became the first back to back directing winner since Joseph Mankiewicz in 1949 and 1950, “As the history of Cinema unfolds, you have forged your way into history these past two years. What an unbelievable talent you are. Thank You, to you and Chivo for creating a transcendent cinematic experience for all of us.”

He thanked those who helped him at every stage in his career, including director Martin Scorsese for “teaching me so much about the cinematic form.”

DiCaprio also thanked his parents: “None of this would be possible without you,” he said.

DiCaprio then connected his film to climate change and said, “Making ‘The Revenant’ was about man’s relationship to the natural world,” he said, noting that “climate change is real. It is happening right now. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow,” he said, calling 2015 “the hottest year in recorded history”. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted,” he concluded.

  15. Barring the last 15 min the Oscars are usually painful to get through and therefore I don’t even try most of the time. Yesterday I switched them on for a bit at some point and caught the Priyanka Chopra award presentation. Must say Quantico has really helped her. Not that it has changed my sense of the show. Have yet to see an episode. But it’s great that she’s done well for herself in this sense. Because of the show she does the talk show rounds and now of course it’s the Oscars. But as for the last 15 min did like Inarritu’s and Leo’s remarks, specially the former. Do think it should have got best picture.

PC has done well with good connections. Quantico and Oscars both are on ABC so they have more incentive to promote her. As for the show, It is below par; it was decent in first couple of episodes but has been downhill since.
