I wish Wazir best of luck at bo. For the sake of its director who is trying again and again. This time with a great actor like Bachchan and interesting actor like Farhan.
With such a huge starcast and being a thriller, anything less than 150cr shall be a disappointment. Most of the reviews so far are positive and I hope WOM also be in the same bracket.
What do you mean “being a thriller”? Those sorts of films rarely are huge grossers, at least partly (IMO) because so many in the audience love to spoil things for others!!!!
That’s why I lowered the bar up to 150 otherwise my expectations would have been 220 around.
Anyway BOI is reporting 15% opening which looks disastrous. What’s happening around? This seems to be a good flick and reviews are also positive. And above all biggest superstar of millennium is in it. Hope it will pick up soon.

Both your comments above are valid and and I pat you on the back for the clarity here. My issues are more with Mr. Farhan Akhtar who forces himself on us through his innocuous hoarse/growling voice and his balderdash pseudo intellectual public persona.
On a different note, can I ask if your username here is on purpose and may I request a change in name as I have few very bad childhood memories of Charan Raj’s character(Kali Prasad)
disrobing Sujata Mehta character (Laxmi) in that movie Pratighat. I have never been so petrified of a screen character more….no not even a gabbar singh.
Always remember an incident when one of my friends had gone to see Gupt at Topiwala (a single screen back then in Goregaon, Mumbai) and just as the movie began, the person behind him, a gentleman who had obviously seen the film before, whispered (sic) out aloud to his friend “Mast hai, dekh tu… pata hi nahin chalta ki Kajol killer hai!” Both my friend and that of the gentleman hurled godawful abuses at him. I can only imagine the agony of having to sit through a thriller and being robbed of the joy and/or surprise of experiencing the reveal.
While not the same emotion, but there are certain films such as Avatar, Bahubali, Fury Road, etc. where you wish you could experience those films again like you’re seeing them for the first time. That audible gasp and dropping of the jaw!
Drat! My mom has been innocently guilty of recommending The Usual Suspects to one of her relatives, and she sold the film by actually telling how one never suspects who Keyser Soze eventually is revealed to be 🙂
I have seen only extreme reactions to the movie. Either you love it or hate it; no in between.
Also I haven’t seen originals. So it took me sometime to adjust to the movie premise.
It happens especially in small towns and sometimes even in metros. I heard complete running commentary as to what is going to happen next from an enthusiastic 15 year old boy who had already seen the film. I did not have the heart to scold him. I just grinned and bore it.
Yes, aamir is in some ways Incredible Indian. He is a bollywood star with a difference. He voices his concern thinking that as a citizen he can do it. But others give it religious colors. And castigate him and isolate him. Very few co stars support him while droves of them support a Sanjay Dutt and a Salman Khan.
I agree that he is not flawless or he is right all the time. But he is not afraid and dont compromise like others do. For him there are easier ways to placate and praise and get all the goodies on a gold platter. But he is choosing the difficult road to travel where there are many thorns. He is mocked for his short stature, big ears which he cant help. He is mocked for his meticulousness and planning. In short, he is mocked because he does not fall in line like others. But he is also praised by some for the same qualities.
India has produced many incredible Indians and he is one amongst them. I think he has a lot to give to the society. It is our loss if we iignore him. Every Indian who can contribute must be looked upon as a treasure.
Political parties may come and go. But India will always be there for all the Indians. India is not vindictive and unforgiving. India is more than twitter rants or Snapdeal deals. True India will alway be there for the likes of Aamir Khan and Aamir khan will always be there for India.
Absolutely Agree .. Aamir has given lot to society with his incredible movies having great impact on society .. right from Lagaan .. followed by Dil Chahta hai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and Three Idiots. All these are GEMS and makes the status of Bollywood a notch higher.
Why SRK was not chosen in headlines? Even though his was also “reportedly” reduced for him as well.
As Aamir hinted, many of the actors have wherewithal of personal security (only downside is they don’t have legal cover). You provide 2-4 constables and a van year around; it is a burden on tax payer.
Vikram has been working on his directorial venture, a song that will feature the positive spirit of Chennaiites during the floods. He has been shooting for the song with many star actors in the city. The latest to join is Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan. The shoot with Abhishek took place at Besant Nagar beach.
Titled ‘The Spirit of Chennai’, the song has been written by Madhan Karky, Rakesh and Gana Bala, and sung by over 20 singers. It is to be noted that, Vikram and Abhishek have worked together in Mani Ratnam’s film Raavan and have been friends for many years now. Actors including Suriya, Nivin Pauly, Puneeth Rajkumar, Sivakarthikeyan, Prabhu Deva, Jayam Ravi, Jiiva, Bharath, Varalakshmi Sarathkumar, Vikranth and Vishnu Vishal have been featured in the video.
This should be interesting. A noble project to be a part of. Incidentally, I have relatives in Tirunelveli and Chennai, and so this wrath of nature (caused of course by human folly) was felt closely by us. Thankfully, everyone came out safe and dry. Also, the missus happened to in Chennai just when the rains had begun, and she was lucky that hers was the last flight out of Chennai (and that after a delay of over 7 hours) before the airport shut operations for 4 days. Hope and pray that the Gods are kinder this year and forgiving of our misgivings.
First Major Release Of 2016 Wazir Opens Poorly

Wazir had a poor opening across the board with collections around 15%. The film was the first major release after three weeks but has found no interest with audience atleast initially. The morning shows are less than Farjan Akhtar’s last solo release Shaadi Ke Side Effects but is higher than the last two Amitabh Bachchan films Shamitabh and Piku. The latter had jumped considerably in the evening.
The film will depend on the reports and if good by chance even then these will have to reflect in collections fast. The film has a lot of screenings at multiplexes for a film of this genre and cast probably due to the Xmas releases coming to the end of their runs and a short run time. This can backfire when the audience is not there.
The other release Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure has not started too badly for an animation film mainly because there are only select screenings in the morning so occupancy is similar to Wazir at many multiplexes. This is also a Saturday film when families may come.
Dilwale At 137 Crore Plus In Three Weeks

Dilwale grossed 10.75 crore nett in its third week. Despite the collection not being too good it is still the fourth highest third week collection of 2015. The collections of Dilwale till date are as follows.
Week One – 95,37,00,000
Week Two – 31,11,00,000
Week Three- 10,75,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 137,23,00,000
The collections came down to very low levels on Monday which means there is not much more to come. It should get over the 140 crore nett mark but not by much.
Bajirao Mastani Has Fourth Best Third Week Of All Time

Bajirao Mastani grossed 27 crore nett apprx in week three which is the second best third week of the year after Bajrangi Bhaijaan.. The collections of Bajirao Mastani till date are as follows.
Week One – 84,36,00,000
Week Two – 55,19,00,000
Week Three – 27,00,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 166,55,00,000
The third week collections is also the fourth highest of all time after PK, 3 idiots and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. No other film has collected over 25 crore nett in week three. The film had its first major drop on Monday though collections held fairly well after that. The postponement of Ghayal Returns means the film should cross 175 crore nett as it now will stay in theatres for two more weeks.
easily one of the most remarkable success stories of the contemporary period, all things considered. That it was able to do so with competition is even more incredible. No matter what any of us might have predicted for either film it’s safe to say that no one thought it was possible for BM to do so much or Dilwale to do so little. I’d still say Bhansali should have gone in for a solo release. Would have easily cleared 200 and maybe done a fair bit more. Either way this is the single most impressive result at that scale after the Aamir super-grossers. Nothing else is as remarkable because those are just functions of huge initials. But of course the link between those Aamir films and a film like BM is still trending. It underlines once again that you simply cannot get a spectacular box office result without this being a strong factor.
175 cr is an amazing run for such a movie and kudos to Ranvir for its richly deserved. If remember correctly he had to take a call between kjo’s Shuddhi and this one and the box office outcome of Ras Leela tilted him towards SLB. Shuddhi dreams still remain unfulfilled….. may be like BM another 10 years to the post.
Its time battle of supremacy shift to the younger lot and in someways, though unconsciously / inadvertently industry is trying give us the 3 prototypes here.

Not me. If anything Ranveer seems more “massy” to me, with Varun Dhawan the SRK-type breezy presence with sporadic attempts to “do something serious” (aa la Badlapur).
Saw parts of Bajirao…Ranveer is quite good in it. Really liked the way he worked on his diction. I would have to say he’s the real deal even if his off screen antics are revolting, to put it mildly!
I’ve only seen him in one complete film — Lootera and while he’s again good in his role, especially in the second half, I suspect Motwane should be given bigger credit for that. But after watching him in Bajirao one would have to be persuaded by his talent. I’m certainly not easily impressed by actors (after watching Bachchan everything becomes so mundane) but one has to give credit where it’s well deserved.
Varun Dhawan, on the contrary, has a poor dialogue delivery. Not bad in terms of facial expressions, but lines coming out of his mouth are a big turn off. I think he was the weak link in an otherwise fine Badlapur.
In terms of star-actors (male) who came after Bachchan, including the current lot, I’ve been impressed with the following:
Aamir (Lagaan onwards; loved him in PK)
Anil Kapoor (when he’s controlled by the director)
From the current lot, I think Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are undoubtedly the best. Ranbir is ok; don’t mind him but don’t care much for him either.
And yes, I’ve left out Abhishek because he has lost it badly!
I don’t wish to get started on him, but I’d like to add one thing: there’s this thing called feedback. Time and again the audience has given him feedback that his looks are a big turn off (not saying these are the rules that I agree with, but these are the rules one has to work with) and he continues to kill any fortuitous chances that trickle down his way by virtually looking like Amol Palekar in a Ramesh Sippy film.
That apart, I don’t think he’s capable of giving good performances without good directors either…
And on the topic of films, it’s probably too late to say this, take it as a compliment that almost a year since its release, the best film I’ve seen in years is Interstellar.
Nothing even comes close; its content is watered down to reach a wider audience but its audacity of ideas, its mind-bending theories and of course, the execution were a pleasure to watch. I have no hesitation in saying that it’s the 2001: A Space Odyssey of our times. A fantastic spectacle (those sky-high waves in an intense gravitational field come to mind) but also a brilliant thought-provoking exercise. There are very essays that can do justice to this unqualified masterpiece.
I watched Varun’s Main Tera Hero and may be having common director was more of a reason, but was constantly reminded of Salman of Biwi # 1 or a Govinda from Saajan Chale Sasural.
Hope for being massy you are not clubbing Ranveer to a Salman as that would be simply sacrilegious / ungodly !!!
Agreed over Varun and Salman. If there is someone among the new generation of actors that reminds me of a young Salman, it is Varun. The latter also has the kind of comic timing Salman has.
Ranveer, on the other hand, has the talent and he also has the cockiness SRK has always had!
Wazir First Day Early Estimate

Wazir is looking at first day figures of around 5.25 crore nett. The evening has seen a pick up but not the sort that suggests it will get that huge jump needed on Saturday. The collections are similar to Piku but that film had looked a 3 crore opener in the morning while this on morning numbers looked a 4.25 crore starter.
There will be growth on Saturday as Friday evening collections are better than the morning but probabbly not what it needs. The film is best in Mumbai city, Pune and Bangalore and that mainly thanks to the premium multiplexes in these cities. The mass region has not collected with Rajasthan struggling for just 25 lakhs nett.
The Christmas releases also saw falls at the start of the fourth week. Bajirao Mastani may get upto a 1 crore nett on its fourth friday but Dilwale will be much lower as its run is coming to an end.
Salman Khan’s upcoming film, ‘Sultan,’ has been in the news for ever, mainly because of the Bhai factor but also because the curiosity around the leading lady had been killing fans. From Deepika Padukone to Parineeti Chopra, a lot of names came our way, but none was finalized. Despite the fact that the film had gone on floors a while ago and that Salman has already completed the first schedule, there was no clue, whatsoever, about which B-Town beauty would bag this coveted role. The winner ladies and gentlemen is… Anushka Sharma. The makers recently shared the above pic of Anushka hugging Salman on the official Twitter handle of ‘Sultan’ saying, “Meet Sultan’s Leading Lady! #SultanLeadingLady.”
At that juncture, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari is learnt to have excitedly said, “It is good that Aamir Khan has been taken out of the campaign… he is a traitor (deshdrohi) … .” This prompted Banerjee, Congress member K C Venugopal and some others to quickly retort by saying, “This is not right … this kind of language should not be used about anybody… it is unparliamentary behaviour.” Tiwari fell silent after that reaction.
Kazi Masum Akhtar deserves our attention because every act of intolerance, especially intolerance that leads to violence, deserves to be condemned with equal vigour. If VHP or Bajrang Dal vigilantes decide to strong-arm theatres to stop screening Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwaale in Mangalore because of his comments about “intolerance” or the Sri Ram Sene drag women out of pubs, they deserve to be condemned.
Those who threaten Vidya Dinker – the Citizens Forum activist in Mangalore fighting against the spate of “immoral policing”- with rape, assault and murder, should be charged just as those who beat up Akhtar should be charged with assault. When police turns a blind eye to verbal violence, harassment and intimidation because it fears “tension” it sends a green signal to thugs of all sides that they can get away with more.
And that is what seems to have happened in this case as well. The Mamata Banerjee government has actually been good at nipping attempts to create communal tension in the bud. (Remember the furore over the missing fourteen-year-old girl which given communal colours before she suddenly returned home?) But at the same time it has been accused of pandering to the minority community for votes. As a result the police seem unwilling or unable to stand up to bullying to protect the likes of a Kazi Masum Akhtar.
That is why we should ensure Kazi Masum Akhtar’s case is not just a local news footnote. In many ways he stood up for the national anthem. Hopefully the media will also stand up for him.
The car rationing “odd-even” scheme, which has reduced the traffic volume, has managed to bring down the peak level of pollution in the national capital to its “lowest”, a Supreme Court appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) has said.
EPCA said both particulate matter and nitrogen oxide load from cars have reduced substantially, by as much as “40 per cent”, in the first week of its implementation thus validating the importance of the car rationing measure.
Wazir Has A Low First Day

Wazir grossed a low 5.25 crore nett on day one with better collections in the evening which was always likely due to the type of film it is. The collections are smilar to Piku but the gains in the evening do not compare with film.
The film had its best collections in MumbaI city and Pune which meant that Mumbai circuit was best with around 1.75 crore nett. The other contributors were Delhi / UP at 1.20 crore, East Punjab with 64 lakhs and Mysore with 30 lakhs. All other circuits were less than 25 lakhs nett. The growth should come on Saturday but it needs the sort of growth which can take it over 20 crore nett for the weekend,
The other release Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure grossed around 30-35 lakhs nett which though low is actually one of the better opening day numbers for a Hindi animation film..
Bajirao Mastani And Dilwale Fourth Friday Collections

Bajirao Mastani grossed around 1 crore nett on its fourth Friday which is a good collection and the weekend should go to 4.5 crore nett plus. The collections of the film so far are around 167.50 crore nett. The postponement of Ghayal Returns means an extra week run and it should comfortably cross the 175 crore nett mark.
Dilwale grossed around 25 lakhs nett on its fourth Friday and the total collections now stand at 137.50 crore nett. The weekend should be 1 crore nett plus. The film has become the fourth highest grosser ever in West Bengal after 22 days.
The final difference in the films will be 35 crore nett plus in the favor of Bajirao Mastani though the gap in the distributor share will be only 11-12 crore.

The leads almost make us buy it all. Farhan Akhtar plays a more sombre variation of the guy-next-door-if-you-forget-he’s-from-a-film-family character he’s made his own, except that he may want to work on his drunken scenes – you almost hear the hic! As for Bachchan, he keeps mixing it up – one part gruff-hamminess (you feel, between chess games, he’s still teaching a visually impaired Rani Mukerji) and one part restraint (watch him gaze at nothing in particular and shed a tear for the past). These two could probably make you watch a movie in which they did nothing but… play chess.
The Danish Girl: Eddie Redmayne pulls it off again. It was a challenging role and he did quite well with the mannerisms and body language. There’s no doubt he is a good discovery, but I was quite enamoured by Alicia Vikander too. Both have been deservedly nominated for their respective parts in both the Golden Globes and BAFTA this year. The story is sensitively told although predictable
Danny Collins: Another predictable yet enjoyable film with a towering performance by Pacino. Nothing much to add here though. It’s one of those films you watch and enjoy while they last butforget quickly afterwards
Steve Jobs: More enjoyable and fun for those who’ve read the autobiography by the same name or who have followed hislife closely. Aided by good performances from the cast, long scenes and a tilting background score
Wazir Has Good Growth On Saturday

Wazir has shown good growth on Saturday as collections look set to be in the 7.25 nett range. The growth will be around 35% from the first day. It is lopsided growth with big multiplexes in metros jumping 50% while other multiplexes outside metros showing lower jumps. There was no growth in single screens but its collections in single screens are also very low with maybe just 10-12% of its total business coming from single screens.
The second day number would have been ideal for its opening day collections but still the second day number puts it in a better position than after its first day business.
Similar growth on Sunday would really put the film in a good position but as the film is limited in appeal it would be a big surprise if its repeat performance on Sunday.
Actor Aamir Khan’s exit from the Incredible India campaign has not only set off a controversy after BJP MP Manoj Tiwari questioned his patriotism at a closed-door parliamentary panel meeting but also presents a conundrum over who should be Mr. Khan’s replacement.
Top sources in the Tourism Ministry told The Hindu that the choice coalesced around Amitabh Bachchan, but there was another, more dominant view that there should be a female celebrity as brand ambassador. “Apart from that, there is also a line of thinking that a sports icon could be considered for the position,” a top source said.
Actress Priyanka Chopra is a strong contender for female brand ambassador. “The Ministry has been mulling this over, and the new proposal came in just a couple of days ago. Whoever is chosen, the controversy over Aamir Khan has to be combated,” said the source.
Mr. Tiwari denied that he had questioned Mr. Khan’s patriotism, but admitted that he objected to his continuation as brand ambassador. The chairman of the standing committee on tourism and Trinamool Congress MP, K.D. Singh, asked Tourism Secretary Vinod Zutshi to give details of just who would be the brand ambassador and how much the person would be paid by the Ministry for the assignment. The report is to be submitted in 10 days.
Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma told The Hindu that the Ministry was finalising the names and modalities for this. “We are still looking at various options; nothing has been finalised,” he said. He did admit that there “were proposals” for multiple brand ambassadors, but nothing was finalised.
I dont find any difference between any of the political parties. They sing something when they are in opposition and then they sing something else when in power.

Aamir Khan is not only being replaced as the face of Incredible India, he is also being dropped from a mega road safety campaign in what appears to be a fallout of the “intolerance” controversy.
Government officials said the actor had been signed as the brand ambassador for the road safety campaign in December 2014 at the behest of Union minister Nitin Gadkari.
Road transport and highways minister Gadkari had personally approached Aamir after watching an episode of his TV talk show, Satyamev Jayate, in October that year. The episode was called “Road Accidents or Murders?”
“The minister thought the episode was very well researched and documented and was highly impressed with Aamir’s initiative to raise important social issues through his programme,” an official attached to Gadkari’s office said.
“Since the ministry was already looking to launch a countrywide campaign to spread awareness on safe practices on the road, Aamir seemed the best choice to be its face,” he said.
Aamir agreed to feature in television and print ads for the campaign free of cost after a meeting with Gadkari in Mumbai.
The ministry then engaged Piyush Pandey to create content for the public service ads, a director in the ministry’s transport division said.
“Several meetings were held with Pandey and ministry officials to decide the form and nature of the campaign. A meeting was then scheduled between the ad-maker and the minister last October but it did not happen because of a sudden change in Gadkari’s programme. So, it was postponed to December,” he said.
“In the meantime, Aamir had stirred a storm by commenting on the state of affairs in the country, and the ministry decided to choose somebody else in his place.”
Wazir is heading for minimum 45 Crore worldwide weekend. Overseas numbers are quite impressive and domestic are not bad. Lets see how it holds over weekdays.
Star Wars: Force Awakens’ Becomes Highest Grossing Domestic Release of All-Time

With an updated gross of $764.4 million thru Wednesday, Jan. 7, Star Wars: the Force Awakens is officially the highest grossing film of all time in the domestic market. By the end of this coming weekend it will become the only film to cross $800 million domestically as the conversation then turns to its continuing international prospects.
With an updated gross of $764.4 million thru Wednesday, Jan. 7, Star Wars: the Force Awakens is officially the highest grossing film of all time in the domestic market. It took a mere 20 days for the film to surpass the previous record of $760.5M held by Avatar, which not only took a total of 318 days to achieve, but was spread across two releases.
When adjusted for inflation Force Awakens still has a long, long way to go to top Gone with the Wind’s $1.73 billion, but it has moved to 20th position on the chart, just ahead of Raiders of the Lost Ark bringing to light another milestone.
What do U.S. Marshals, The Man With the Iron Mask, Grease have in common? They are the three films that topped Titanic on the Friday night of their opening weekends even while falling to second place to James Cameron’s Titanic as the mighty blockbuster came towards the end of its reign at the top of the charts. If you want to include The Book of Eli which topped its opening Friday of its Martin Luther King Day weekend debut even as Avatar eventually took the top slot for the frame, go for it.
So when I tell you that Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant was the top film last night, with $14.4 million, that doesn’t mean anything for Star Wars yet other than that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is following a hallowed tradition. It is the second-biggest film on Friday but it may yet top the weekend one last time before Ride Along 2 snatches the weekend crown next weekend. And if doesn’t, then The Revenant, which has now earned $15.96m total, is the new Lost In Space/Dear John.
But the real story of the weekend isn’t which film tops which, but rather the incredible opening weekend performance of The Revenant. Lest anyone doubt my somewhat tongue-in-cheek post from last month about how we must never let Leonardo DiCaprio win an Oscar lest he stop making the kind of films that merit Oscar consideration, well um, here you go. The Revenant, a dark, long, grueling and hyper-violent period piece survival story is going to open with around $38 million this weekend (better than the $37m debut of Lone Survivor on this weekend in 2014), and it’s almost entirely on the strength of DiCaprio’s star power.

BOI is in hurry to declare it flop on third day itself .. though it has not dropped yet. To be fair, its India business looking at 45-50 Crore if sustains well on Monday. Badlapur with higher budget and poor overseas collections was Hit at this number. Wazir has good overseas collections as PLUS .. and 60% of its investment already recovered from satellite. So its a win-win situation.
Let’s not play blame games again here and ridicule BOI. Whenever a Bachchan movie releases, BOI is presented as a villain by Bachchan fanatics just to hide Bachchan’s inability to deliver at B.O. If one takes note of BOI they throw lesser nos for every movie as compared to official nos whereas, other sites give official nos. So, the difference is always there. But it’s the Bachchan fanatics who aren’t ready to face the reality and hence accuse BOI for under reporting Bachchan filmsevery time just to prove their point that Bachchan is still a big force at ticket window. I think Bachchan is the only star in this world who enjoys a concession at boxoffice and that’s, despite delivering duds at B.O since three decades he’s still branded as biggest superstar of univers who’s above boxoffice. But in reality he’s has just become a paper tiger and nothing else and this sort of persona is found in imagination of his fanatics only. Whenever somebody points out it, the fanatics start playing victims and start crying from rooftops that some serious conspiracy is going on against Bachchan and even age factor is brought forward then. But when one argues about the age of Rajni, they’r speechless at that time.
Anyway, the Wazir is going on the same lines like his previous movies have been going and there’s no exception here as well.
Bachchan’s last film was Piku I think.. could be wrong.. he’s currently doing smaller niche films.. let’s see how far Wazir goes.. next up is Teen, another niche film.

Bajirao Mastani had a decent weekend with around 4 crore more coming in. It currently stands around the 175 crore mark. On the other hand Dilwale has now started collecting in lakhs and couldn’t progress much. It has pushed its way to the 147 crore total.
After witnessing a slow start at the box office, “Wazir” business went up on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, “Wazir” business went up by 27%, while on Sunday the film witnessed a growth of 15%. The growth in the box office collection of “Wazir” was mainly due to rave reviews that built a strong buzz over the weekend.

Bajirao Mastani dropped in the fourth weekend as it faced competition from a new release though collections are good for a fourth week. The fourth weekend drop was 75% plus. The collections of the film till date are as follows.

Fourth Weekend – 4,50,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 172,40,00,000
The film should be around 175 crore nett after the end of the fourth week. The distributor share after fourth weekend is 82 crore apprx.
out of the films nominated here…I’ve only watched BM, Dilwale, BB and Tamasha. Think Ranveer and Deepika were the best this year and BM was the best film. I think Ranveer will actually will win it and Alka Yagnik should win also which would be her first since 2005 I think. Overall an accurate list.
Was watching Stardust awards; SRK and Kajol performed with self tribute. They(Farah and Retiesh) sang hosannaas about him being romance god. In reality it has been his bane. He could never come out of that image and do different roles.
I think it was proved that somethings are just better left for reminiscing…and not forced to be re-created. SRK’s biggest challenge for years has been to try and find a medium of re-creating a bit of his past and try something new…it hasn’t worked out so well (in terms of trying to find something new). Can he be accepted in a “different” persona…I guess we will find out this year.
Once bitten twice shy. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Monday refused to comment on Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali’s upcoming performance in the eastern metropolis because of how people react whenever he makes political or religious remarks.
“Because of the reaction I get whenever I make political or religious comments, I will not use this platform to say anything on this,” Shah Rukh told the media here in response to a poser on Ghulam Ali’s concert.
Shah Rukh’s comments on the recent intolerance debate created quite a stir, but the 50-year-old actor maintained that he had not said anything which merited an apology.

Ever since the promos of Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 hit the internet, it was obvious that the film would have a nightmare while securing a certificate from the Censor Board. However, as per a report on BollywoodLife.com, nobody expected the Censors to order as many as 150 cuts from the film and that too for obtaining an adult certificate! Yes, you read it right. From the trailers, it seems as if the entire film is filled with double meaning or suggestive jokes. So, if you order these many cuts, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 might just turn into a short film!
Wazir has more than 55% drop on Monday. This is a certified flop now. Nothing more to discuss as figures say everything. RIP producers and distributers.
Says Akshay Kumar, who’s all excited about playing the baddie in ‘Robot 2’; the actor who explodes on screen on Republic Day has his own take on Incredible India and intolerance.
Akshay Kumar remembers watching T Rama Rao’s 1983 Bollywood drama, Andha Kanoon, and being mesmerised by Rajinikanth’s kicks and jumps. “Today, the action may seem a little funny, but at that time I would be gaping at the screen, wondering how Rajini sir did what he did. It was a marvel in technique and technology!” the actor reminisces, still in awe of the South supremo he will be challenging as the adversary in the Robot sequel.
Ask him if working with the Thalaiva is a dream come true and he laughs, “These things don’t come to you even in a dream. He’s a wonderful actor and even more, a wonderful human being. It will be an honour to be punched by Rajini sir. It’s going be a different world for me — the graphics, the action and the adulation that he commands.” Buzz is, The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was in the running for the role. “I have no idea, I just know that Shankar (director) and some of the others called me and told me they had a film for me,” he shrugs.
However, before Robot 2, Akshay will bring in the Republic Day with his coproduction Airlift. He insists it gave him gooseflesh when it was narrated to him. “I was shocked to know that in 1990 not Air Force pilots but commercial pilots of Air India flew into a war zone and rescued one lakh 70 thousand Indians trapped in Kuwait. We can make another film on these pilots alone. They were the real heroes,” he exults.
Bring up the intolerance debate and he retorts, “India has always been known for its tolerance. We’ve always tried to keep peace but when attacks like the one at Pathankot happen, you realise that the time has come to retaliate. Going by what you read in the social media, our youngsters are angry, they have taken this personally, and want India to attack too.”
With Aamir Khan’s exit India needs a new brand ambassador, interested? “I don’t know if I’m fit for it but if I get a chance, it would be an honour. India is truly incredible!” he exults.
Meanwhile, a new season of the reality show he has hosted is coming up but the Khiladi doesn’t have anything to do with the dangerous stunts this time around. “I wasn’t approached this time,” he says shortly, pointing out that there’s nothing on television for now but lots on the big screen, including Houseful 3, the “relief film” and “fun franchise”. However, he’s clueless about Dhadkan 2 and Hera Pheri 3 but Namaste England will definitely roll this year and so will Rustom, in which he plays a naval officer and which is set for the Independence Day weekend release. He’d be happy if Sanjay Leela Bhansali were to helm the Rowdy Rathore sequel. “He’s a great director, and I’m a huge fan. I’ve just seen his film (Bajirao Mastani), Ranveer (Singh) has so much energy,” he asserts.
His wife Twinkle is now a published author and Akshay is a proud man. “It’s great the way she made a name for herself, first as an actress, then a designer, a columnist and now an author. She has a wonderful sense of humour which is very different from mine and that is the best part about our household. It’s like East meets West,” he laughs.
Does he harbour ambitions of writing too, maybe his biography some day ? “No, I know my limitations. There are bigger legends to write about, I’m still a struggler,” he says modestly.
Must say the Akshay is going through probably his best phase right now wrt his choices. Had he been more calculated during his peak he really could have amounted to something with his current filmography. As it stands he also seems liberated in a way where he seems to be resigned to the fact that he is not in the ranks of an Aamir, Salman and Hrithik/SRK… so he is actually content with the Special 26, Baby, OMG, Airlift, type films which cannot really do much beyond a point. Look forward to the Robot sequel. This should be interesting. He’s good when bad (Ajnabee, Aflatoon, Khiladi 420)

IMO, there are three business models now –
[1] One Film in 15 months – Beat the records
Aamir rules in this model from No 1 to 5 and followed by Hrithik at No 6 and no other actor really. Hats off to Aamir for creating this business model which is borrowed from Rajnikant who does the same in Tamil films
[2] 2 Films in 15 months – Come close to the record
Salman Rules here with SRK following him. In late 90s, SRK was the King of this model. Ranbir Kapoor is following the same model but off late has been struggling at BO though his performance is still appreciated.
[3] 4 films in 15 months – No records but experiment max
Akshay Kumar rules this model followed by Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, and almost every successful new comer.
So arguing that Akshay is not in the same league is not understanding the above three models that starts are adopting. Each model has its merits and cannot be compared.
When asked about the debate over Aamir Khan’s removal as brand ambassador of Incredible India , SRK said, “I don’t have anything to do with it: neither was I recruited nor was I let go. Please leave me out of it.”

Wazir had a big fall on Monday with collections down 55% from Monday. More than the drop it is the low level the collections have fallen to. The first four day business of Wazir is as follows.
The weekend performance was not great and for any content film it has to be a 40% drop on Monday from Friday at a minimum. The film is almost a certain FLOP now with the first week business heading for around 28-29 crore nett.

Dilwale has emerged the biggest Shahrukh Khan grosser in Overseas beating the figures of My Name Is Khan which did release in more markets that Dilwale. The top ten Shahrukh Khan grossers in overseas are as follows..
1. Dilwale (2014)- $23.30 million
2. My Name Is Khan (2010) – $22.80 million
3. Chennai Express (2013)- $19.39 million
4. Happy New Year – $17.12 million
5. Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) – $13.23 million
6. Don 2 (2011) – $11.20 million
7. Ra. One (2011) – $10.85 million
8. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – $10.56 million
9. Om Shanti Om (2007) – $10.15 million

The film is coming to the end of its run now in most markets though a $175,000 opening weekend in Germany helped add to the total this weekend. Shahrukh Khan now has 9 films over $10 million which is almost half of the $10 million plus films.
Amitabh, Ranveer, SRK and Irrfan all won for a best actor award (in three separate categories). This is as bad as the Golden Globes were a couple days ago. Truly awards don’t mean squat anymore.

They have those two categories, yes… but over the past many years now the Comedy/Musical category has come to mean any film that is not drama. They might as well change the classification. American Hustle and The Martian are recent examples that took home Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) and Leonardo DiCaprio and Amy Adams are examples of those adjudged comedic performances. I mean, come on! Moreover, the Globes has come to symbolise a night when Hollywood lets its hair down… everyone is in high spirits and frankly they nominate stars, not necessarily actors. Johnny Depp was himself quite uncomfortable with his nomination for the universally panned The Tourist. It is now accepted more as the final pit-stop where you polish your acceptance speeches before the more serious and actual business of Guild Awards and eventually the Oscars.

The essence of these award shows worldwide are very well depicted albeit in a very humorous manner by the host of Golden Globe here and were perhaps the best lines from his hilarious opening monologue
Ricky Gervais : “If you do win tonight, remember that no one cares about that award as much as you do. OK? Don’t get emotional — it’s embarrassing. That award is — no offense — worthless. It’s a bit of metal that some nice old confused journalists wanted to give you in person so they could meet you and have a selfie with you. That’s all it is. I’ve got three Golden Globes, myself. One’s a doorstop, one I use to hit burglars with and one I keep by the bed to — doesn’t matter why. It’s mine! I won it fair and square. It’s just the right shape and size. It’s nothing. So to be clear: That was a joke about me shoving Golden Globes — that I’ve won — up my ass. And they asked me to host four times!”
Contempt for these awards is evident here esp Akshay exposes everything very clearly with Varun chipping in that it now has become just a software for TV. Akshay seems to be in his element here and summarizes Bollywood very well and should hit the pseudos on the blog like a lightning bolt
Wazir starring Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar took a decent start at the box office and showed a decent growth over its opening weekend. The film made a business of 21 crores at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
Wazir has also shown an average performance in the overseas circuits.
The film collected $600K in the US/Canada circuits whereas a decent $450K in the gulf circuits. The Bejoy Nambiar thriller scored an opening weekend of 10.48 crores from the overseas circuits.
Being the first big star release of 2016, the film has fared quite decently. Also considering the film’s genre not being an out and out commercial, the average performance is acceptable.
Even taking into account the political motivations that sometimes spring up, the National Awards are a far more credible and film-centric institution than any of the major American awards. Shows Masand’s populist mindset when it comes to such things.
Furthermore, the Oscars are equally as fluffy and entertainment-led as the Filmfares, just that the mode of entertainment is a Western one. Masand assumes this to be more “credible” than a Ranveer Singh dance performance because of his world view, when objectively speaking there is nothing that makes Seth McFarlane’s “We Saw Your Boobs” sketch any more credible. Personally, I’d rather see the dances and have Kapil spout one liners, as thsee are traditions that essentially are rooted in our folk culture. Why beg for this bland globalisation where everything is American!?!
Yes Bollywood award shows are a farce, but the Oscars are just a quieter, more undercover farce. If you want a stern, serious awards ceremony, go for the NationalAwards!!

SDM is a bad movie? It is a well made movie.There are other better movies but awarding it is not Farce. The thing is that unconnected 6000 people from film fraternity are voting. SDM is a well made movie but not Oscar worthy. Forgettable one. Rehman gave much better quality music and his winning two Oscars for this film is questionable. Why they left out Dev Patel, Freida Pinto and Anil Kapoor?
We (Indian) know Rehman has given much better music. Frankly I don’t understand the music nuance to say one music is better than other. To me, is it melodious or not.
Titanic won all awards but nothing for acting. A better film doesn’t always equate to good acting. Many people wanted ET to win but Gandhi won the best picture.
Acting parameters are more consistent in Oscar than best film which has much more subjectivity.
I will not get into whether the awards show here need to have dance performances, etc. Pasand apni apni. I also do not think that we need to adopt any American or British humour, and frankly it won’t go well with our sensibilities and traditions. Although I must point out that in recent years, with hosts SRK, Saif, K-Jo, Riteish, etc. this is precisely what is being attempted- an American brand of humour. And I don’t see how Kapil Sharma is better off than the worst comedians anywhere in the world… but then I never really understood the big deal about Kapil ‘Babaji Ka Thullu’ Sharma! There is so much crass Delhi humour that I can take… and his one-liners have no roots in any Indian traditions, please.
About the Oscars… surely, there is a great deal of lobbying involved there. But as the gentleman above me has pointed out (MSDhoni), just the fact that they telecast it live lends it some credibility. And apart from that, and I say this with some amount of authority having been an Oscar-phile since 1999, there is a system to it. Do i believe that they always honour the best in a given year in film (a qualifier by nature subjective)? Of course not. But recognition from an ever-growing pool of your peers, even if that recognition depends on how many eyeballs your film screenings can garner, is anyday a much more valid indicator of what ‘stood out’ in a given year in film… unlike who cozied up to a sponsor more and/or who agreed to perform only on condition of being given some random ‘superstar power-star’ award!
Also, unlike the awards here, there is a whole Oscar season. It is 3 months of precursor awards that are divided into critics bodies from various states and cities to individual guilds… and then of course the academies of Britain and Australia, etc. The Oscars then become a culmination of sorts… where one can play psephologist and predict a given year and where the general mood is tilting.
The whole process is also much more scientific. So to be nominated, you can be voted by members across the board… but to be awarded, only those from your branch can vote for you. So a Brokeback Mountain may get nominated on the strength of the members across the categories, that it loses to Crash shows the general demographic of the producers and the respective guild that voted for the winner eventually. This is a negative, but an indicator nevertheless. Conversely, when an Ang Lee wins the Oscar twice for Best Director, he knows automatically just how much he is respected by his fellow filmmakers. Our awards can never be such psychosocial indicators.

Scrap paid appearances, tacky dances: Rajeev Masand has 9 ways to mend Bollywood award shows
Every year while watching the Golden Globes and the Oscars, I find myself thinking about our own Bollywood award shows and how they can be improved from the tedious, over-long affairs that they have become. How they can be turned into a credible event that the film community actually wants to attend, and doesn’t just have to attend because they’re getting paid to.
Right off the bat let’s acknowledge the fact that it’s hard, given that there are so many Bollywood awards, and not one definitive one: Filmfare, Screen, Stardust, Guild, IIFA, Big Star Entertainment, at least a few more that don’t immediately come to mind, and then the newer ones that mushroom every year.
But hey, Hollywood has a bunch of awards too: the Oscars, the Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards, the SAG Awards, the Directors Guild, the Producers Guild, plus every other Guild awards.
But let’s not digress. Bollywood needs at least one credible film awards. And here’s a nine-step plan on how to do it.
1. Telecast the event live
That’s how Filmfare used to do it back in the day, before greedy TV channels decided they could garner way more advertising and viewer interest if they teased moments from the show for weeks leading up to the telecast.”
Of course if one of the awards shows did decide to go live, they’d have to get their act together. No tardy arrivals, no fake reaction shots inserted into acceptance speeches, no teleprompter glitches. You’d have to get the best guys in the business to put the thing together. At one of the awards events recently, a heavy sandbag from a ramp several feet above the stage fell to the ground, narrowly missing Sneha Rajani, co-producer of Piku, bang in the middle of her acceptance speech. She was rattled to say the least. That cannot happen.
2. Scrap the dance performances
It’s an awards ceremony (at least it’s meant to be!) not a variety entertainment show.
We’ll tune in to any one of the dozen odd dance/reality show appearances that movie stars make while promoting their films if we want to see them dance. Nobody wants to see those performances at an awards show – not the guys in the room attending the event, and not the guys watching it at home on TV – not if it means that the whole event gets stretched over five hours.
I understand that TV channels need those performances, because that’s what they promote through hoardings and TV spots. They need movie stars up there on stage because it’s the stars that bring the advertising. But you’ve got to reinvent the wheel. Bring the stars up as presenters for all the awards, not just the major ones. Stop calling sponsors and TV channel heads to the stage to present awards. Find new and interesting ways to bring more stars to the stage – get them to introduce the nominated films like the Oscars and the Globes do. Just don’t make them dance.
3. Make it a shorter event
Chances are that the show will become roughly an hour and a half shorter if you do away with the live performances. But that’s not enough. Stick to a script. Encourage presenters to do so too. Ask winners to keep their acceptance speeches short or risk being drowned out by cue music.
Bollywood awards shows currently run into anything between three-and-a-half and five hours. Think of everyone in that room: Tired, hungry, sleepy, pissed off.

this was a good read and was almost spot on. I think they should keep the dance performances but no way they should be paid. The awards should be shorter and live and as Sanjana said above…stop trying to please everyone!

Award shows are dime a dozen. Even some stars homes cant afford to store up all those awards. Though tv is the main culprit for degrading awards shows, the stars themselves are to be blamed for attending every award function to get more visibility, publicity and popularity. Those who are too star struck still watch these shows. And there is one diva who has no work wants to attend every function to show off how young she looks even now. And other oldies are following her example.
Every distributor of Dilwale has suffered huge life destroying losses. Here you listen it from Komal Nahata.
But, BOI suddenly changed their parameter of success, now gross matters evenif it is not huge. Not even distributor share matters, not even cost and expectations matter.
Well rounded analysis by Komal and raghav which point is he talking about life destroying losses to distributors on Dilwale. He just mentions they will go through some losses whereas SRK will make a lot of money. In fact he was more harsh on pricing of Baby, Shandaar and Bombay Velvet and even wnet to last year release Jai Ho.
That brings to the core question – Is it actor/star’s fault for cashing in on their stardom and why are they required to do social service for these eager beaver distributors. If movie performs badly then it simply becomes an economic parameter of demand and supply and the actor will be hurt by the nonperformance thereon. Further there is a shortage of movie stars who can actually connect with the audience so somewhere its audience fault which has become very choosy and allows only a Ranbir type of actor to charge 30-40 cr for a movie.
Lastly in this age of quick fix and spot fixing how can a star truly rely on the intent of the producer/ distributors and if they are there for the art and craft or moolah. Why should he be responsible for third party failure if the other crew cannot get their act together. What is Ranbir’s fault if he gives 6 months to a movie like Bombay Velvet but the counter-parties come up with godawful product. uske toh lag gaye…..
More than stars, its the director who are totally awful these days who cannot make a simple, logical, lucid, reasonable movie otherwise one cannot explain a HNY, Dilwale or PRDP kind of product which gets all support from their stars and had everything going except coherent direction / editing and presentation.
There are three successful business models in Film Industry –
[1] One Film in 15 months – Beat the records
Aamir rules in this model from No 1 to 5 and followed by Hrithik at No 6 and no other actor really. Hats off to Aamir for creating this business model which is borrowed from Rajnikant who does the same in Tamil films
[2] 2 Films in 15 months – Come close to the record
Salman Rules here with SRK following him. In late 90s, SRK was the King of this model. Ranbir Kapoor is following the same model but off late has been struggling at BO though his performance is still appreciated.
[3] 4 films in 15 months – No records but experiment + earn max
Akshay Kumar rules this model followed by Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, and almost every successful new comer.
See I don’t want to b dragged in an endless debate… so you can continue believing that this has always been Akshay’s game plan all along, but pray I fail to understand how doing Chandni Chowk to China, Kambakht Ishq and De Dana Dan in 2009 or Housefull, Khatta Meetha, Action Replay and Tees Maar Khan in 2010 and Thank You and Desi Boyz in 2011 is in any way reflective of a model of experimenting! I’d think you should be happy as an Akshay fan that he is doing the reasonably alternative by way of Holiday, etc. but accept that he has reached here only after having realized that he can’t break a certain ceiling. Had he mixed those years I mentioned after his truly breakthrough 2007, with the kind of films he is doing now, he probably would be enjoying a far greater share of the spoils. Akshay comes across as a sensible person and he would be the first to admit and acknowledge his limitations. I don’t see why on cannot be happy with his current crop of films without also wanting to have the crown of perfecting some alternative Box Office model.

Which new comer is following Akki model ? Ranveer just has Befikre and Varun has that Dishoom…Same with Ranbir who hardly has much on plate considering youth factor.
Meanwhile Akshay has Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom, Namastey England and Robot 2, has also agreed to do A.R. Murugadoss’ Katthi remake. So definitely Akki is making hay big time and these youngsters are sitting twiddling their thumbs.
On the other hand, SRK is the next one who is joining the Akki model and as per reports after 3 releases this year has signed two more (Imtiaz & Anand Rai or YRF next movie co-starring Ranveer)

Due limitations on multi tasking ( as admitted by Aamir himself ), he will never be able to follow this model. Next one to join the multi project bandwagon will be Salman and Ajay before waning out to senior citizen roles. So these guys are set to be around for another 5 years exerting sufficient power and authority.
I feel similar to Hritithik- Abhi bracket, this current generation of stars ( Ranveer , Ranbir, Varun) may not be able to flex much muscle too and the ‘next big thing’ will come a generation later………
Salman would definitely be doing more than what he is doing now too but the BigBoss phenomena is too much to resist not taking into account the big bucks attached which is to the tune of 140cr per season.

Malaysia – $1.70million (ALL TIME RECORD)
Australia – Au$1.09 million (fifth highest ever)

– Touching 35cr is looking impossible now the way film is heading. Hope Farhan smells the coffe and stops acting in movies. It’s better for him to focus on direction only as that’s the best thing he can do. On the other hand Bachchan should work with big stars so that boxoffice is kept alive and his acting is recognised. He’d acted well in Shamitabh and has done same in Wazir but the irony is that when a film flops, everything goes to dustbin itself.

Q. Why is it in an industry that easy to avoid a clash, it would have been so easy for Bajirao Mastani or Dilwale to move so both films can make 50 crore extra to what they made?
Ans. Its not as easy as that. There is a 300 crore plus pot available on Eid, Christmas and Diwali so its not easy to move to another date where the pot goes down to 225 or even 200 crore and leave the big one for the other film. Both films will not have done much 50 more if they came solo outside a holiday period. But if on xmas they were solo then would have added 50 crore extra for sure. Bajirao Mastani could have been even more.

The overseas numbers of Dilwale are giving it a shot to become the second biggest Worldwide grosser of the year. The film is still running and is a little short of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which is the second highest grosser Worldwide at present. The top Worldwide grossers of 2015 till now are as follows
At one stage it had looked that Bajirao Mastani may catch Dilwale in terms of Worldwide collections but Dilwale has maintained its lead over due to its continued strong run Overseas..
The entire entertainment fraternity is expressing outrage over the arrest of Kiku Sharda for mimicking Godman, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan on his TV show. Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor has also done the same, but he has gone several steps ahead by challenging the authorities to arrest him. He shared a picture of the MSG actor with the caption, “See this picture!I would like to play this rockstar in a film. Let me see who puts me behind bars? Go Kiku Sharda!”.
For quite some time now I have been reading short stories, listening actually, from audio recordings, and marvelling at the pleasure they offer, in terms of precision of craft, beauty of language, and a strong, concentrated impact. ‘Wazir’ is that rare Hindi film that offers such a pleasure…of a good story well told, without distraction, without flab, leaving behind a delectable aftetaste.
Director Bijoy Nambiar wastes no time in getting the story off the ground. It opens with a moody song shot in slow-mo which takes us through the marriage of Anti-Terrorist Squad officer Danish and Ruhana , the birth of their daughter Noorie and their happy life together. The family is on their way to a dance performance of Ruhana when Dansih gives a chase to a fugitive terrorist, leading to Noorie getting killed. Ruhana blames Dansih for it. Danis too is racked by guilt. Quickly enough, we encounter the next turn in the tale, when Danish meets wheel-chair bound Pandit Omkarnath Dhar who too is trying to come to terms with loss, especially the death of his daughter in the house of a minister Izaad Qureshi.
And then magic unfolds on screen.
If you want to attend a masterclass in acting, you have to watch Amitabh Bachchan slip into the role of Pandiji and watch the play of myriad expressions on his face, and listen to every line – some sad, some playful, some angry, some indulgent, some a drunken slur – delivered with precise voice control and a cadence that is his own. Frahan Akhtar is an adequate foil holding up his angst and anger-ridden persona quite consistently in a largely one-note role. The relationship that emerges between the two is the touching undercurrent that powers the film. While talking of performances, one must mention Manav Kaul and Aditya Rao Hydari who leave a mark with their performance and presence as Quershi and Ruhana respectively.
And there is the story.
I must confess here that I usually find Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s writing efforts – from Kareeb to Eklavya – quite pretentious and unbearable, containing the germ of a high concept but lacking in satisfactory execution. But here he seems to have redeemed himself fabulously, with a little help from Abhijat Joshi and Bijoy Nambiar perhaps. No wonder he insists on underscoring ‘An Original Story by…’ at many points of the credit titles.
Here is a story that is well-rounded with many threads and nuances coming together seamlessly and amply justifying the film’s title. It does not require a deep knowledge of chess to appreciate the central construct of the film’s theme – just a passing acquaintances with the basic rules of the game, which anyone who has played chess should know. The rule relevant to the film, known as ‘ Promotion’, allows a pawn ( Piada) to be exchanged for any other piece, including the most powerful Queen ( Wazir) when it reaches the last row or the 8th rank, most often changing the course of the end game. That’s how a ‘piada’ or pawn can challenge a king or ‘badshah’. Without giving anything further away, I can quote just one line by Panditji, “ Mere paas pair nahin, hathyar nahin, main kya karta? ” The whole trajectory starting from Danish finding the wallet of Panditji at the burial site of Noorie is well-etched, the only bit that does not fully convince being the recorded voice of the Wazir. The plot invention is simple and some may be able to guess it well before it is revealed, but no one being able to guess what is coming has never been a big deal for me in a story. It is about how beautifully things fit together in the end. And the simple central plot device here is enriched by my many sub-strands of relationships and moments, making it a rich enough tapestry.
Poor chap, Aamir, being hounded by sundry BJ P politicos ( like the latest , Ram Madhav or that Bhojpuri actor- politician Manoj Tiwary), or simply attacked on and on ad nauseum by social media commenters….it’s beyond reason this campaign against Aamir, for one off the cuff remark. The actor has been tweeting and FB- posting every week, since Christmas — and the haters land up on his FB page with their sarcastic comments. Looks like he will never be forgiven. But the PM’s talk about Indians being ashamed of being Indians( till he and BJP came along) — few bothered to protest the ludicrous comment ( made last summer in Seoul, repeated differently in Shanghai). And they term Aamir a hypocrite.

Everyone inside B-Town is (or at least they should be) squirming. What if all their names were called out, too?
Now that Asha Parekh has been named and shamed, let’s bring out all the dirt from under the (red) carpet. The yesteryear actress did a bad, bad thing by asking/lobbying for an award, right? So while everyone outside the industry is laughing at Ms Parekh, everyone inside B-Town is (or at least they should be) squirming. Because they all have pulled tricks to win awards. What if all their names were called out, too?
The rule
The mistake the senior actress made was to negotiate the award for herself. Obviously, she didn’t know the rules. This is how it works — An invite goes to an actor’s house, the manager makes a call to the publication house (Filmfare, Screen, Stardust or some channel) and makes it clear that the nominated star is busy shooting/ out of town/ has a prior commitment so he/she won’t be able to make it. Unless, of course, they are winning the award. In which case the star will make the effort to come for the award function, even if it means flying in from another city. A star’s confirmation for attending the award function comes only after the promise of one. And if the actor is not nominated for any award, a special category must be created — like Star Of The Year, Entertainer Of The Year, Most Special performance Of The Year, etc etc. Every actor and actress who attends an award function comes back home with an award. Think that’s a coincidence?
The exception
The only actor who does go to award functions and comes back home without the shiny trophy is Salman Khan. Earlier this month, he dropped into the Stardust awards function. He left even the venue long before the Best Actor award was announced, even though he was nominated in the Best Actor category for Bajrangi Bhaijaan. I recall, a few years ago, he was performing at an award function when they announced his name as the winner for Best Actor. He showed zero interest in collecting the trophy, choosing to stay backstage in his van. It was up to his brother Arbaaz to accept it on his behalf.Only-ifs
A few years ago, an actress who delivered a smashing hit of a biopic, was nominated for Critics’ Choice Best Actress. She refused to enter the venue. She parked outside and called from her car and announced that she would only come in, if she was winning the award.
Another actress, another award ceremony. This foreign import wasn’t even nominated for an award, she was performing and was in her van. When she was told that a seat was reserved for her in front of the stage, she said she would only sit in the audience, if they gave her an award. For the next one hour, she kept calling to check if they’d decided what she would win.
It’s the same story every year. Talk to any team behind an award function and you will hear all about the bullying, pleading and emotional blackmailing from the stars, their managers and their families.
But, then…
That’s not all. Even the stars called to present the awards have their list of demands. Sridevi refused to go up on a stage a couple of years ago because she felt she should be giving away a popular award to a mega star and not a Lifetime Achievement Award to a faded star. Rekha only wants to announce the Best Actor/Actress. I could go on… but it’s pointless.
The situation is not likely to change. It’s all a sham. So many award functions, so little credibility.
It started with Aamir Khan, followed by Salman and now Kangana. Maybe if more actors ban awards things will change. The stars have to change first and then the system will change. Until then, enjoy the song-and-dance at award shows.
Know one thing… when actors squeal in delight or gasp in surprise when their name is announced as the winner, it’s because they are pleased that the commitment made them was fulfilled.

Anyway BOI is reporting 15% opening which looks disastrous. What’s happening around? This seems to be a good flick and reviews are also positive. And above all biggest superstar of millennium is in it. Hope it will pick up soon.

Both your comments above are valid and and I pat you on the back for the clarity here. My issues are more with Mr. Farhan Akhtar who forces himself on us through his innocuous hoarse/growling voice and his balderdash pseudo intellectual public persona.
On a different note, can I ask if your username here is on purpose and may I request a change in name as I have few very bad childhood memories of Charan Raj’s character(Kali Prasad)
disrobing Sujata Mehta character (Laxmi) in that movie Pratighat. I have never been so petrified of a screen character more….no not even a gabbar singh.

Always remember an incident when one of my friends had gone to see Gupt at Topiwala (a single screen back then in Goregaon, Mumbai) and just as the movie began, the person behind him, a gentleman who had obviously seen the film before, whispered (sic) out aloud to his friend “Mast hai, dekh tu… pata hi nahin chalta ki Kajol killer hai!” Both my friend and that of the gentleman hurled godawful abuses at him. I can only imagine the agony of having to sit through a thriller and being robbed of the joy and/or surprise of experiencing the reveal.
While not the same emotion, but there are certain films such as Avatar, Bahubali, Fury Road, etc. where you wish you could experience those films again like you’re seeing them for the first time. That audible gasp and dropping of the jaw!

I have seen only extreme reactions to the movie. Either you love it or hate it; no in between.
Also I haven’t seen originals. So it took me sometime to adjust to the movie premise.

It happens especially in small towns and sometimes even in metros. I heard complete running commentary as to what is going to happen next from an enthusiastic 15 year old boy who had already seen the film. I did not have the heart to scold him. I just grinned and bore it.

A tribute to an Incredible Indian by a fan.
Yes, aamir is in some ways Incredible Indian. He is a bollywood star with a difference. He voices his concern thinking that as a citizen he can do it. But others give it religious colors. And castigate him and isolate him. Very few co stars support him while droves of them support a Sanjay Dutt and a Salman Khan.
I agree that he is not flawless or he is right all the time. But he is not afraid and dont compromise like others do. For him there are easier ways to placate and praise and get all the goodies on a gold platter. But he is choosing the difficult road to travel where there are many thorns. He is mocked for his short stature, big ears which he cant help. He is mocked for his meticulousness and planning. In short, he is mocked because he does not fall in line like others. But he is also praised by some for the same qualities.
India has produced many incredible Indians and he is one amongst them. I think he has a lot to give to the society. It is our loss if we iignore him. Every Indian who can contribute must be looked upon as a treasure.
Political parties may come and go. But India will always be there for all the Indians. India is not vindictive and unforgiving. India is more than twitter rants or Snapdeal deals. True India will alway be there for the likes of Aamir Khan and Aamir khan will always be there for India.

Absolutely Agree .. Aamir has given lot to society with his incredible movies having great impact on society .. right from Lagaan .. followed by Dil Chahta hai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and Three Idiots. All these are GEMS and makes the status of Bollywood a notch higher.

Aamir has not asked for security. It is provided to him because of threat perception. Seeing the reaction to his statement, the threat still persists.

Why SRK was not chosen in headlines? Even though his was also “reportedly” reduced for him as well.
As Aamir hinted, many of the actors have wherewithal of personal security (only downside is they don’t have legal cover). You provide 2-4 constables and a van year around; it is a burden on tax payer.

Vikram has been working on his directorial venture, a song that will feature the positive spirit of Chennaiites during the floods. He has been shooting for the song with many star actors in the city. The latest to join is Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan. The shoot with Abhishek took place at Besant Nagar beach.
Titled ‘The Spirit of Chennai’, the song has been written by Madhan Karky, Rakesh and Gana Bala, and sung by over 20 singers. It is to be noted that, Vikram and Abhishek have worked together in Mani Ratnam’s film Raavan and have been friends for many years now. Actors including Suriya, Nivin Pauly, Puneeth Rajkumar, Sivakarthikeyan, Prabhu Deva, Jayam Ravi, Jiiva, Bharath, Varalakshmi Sarathkumar, Vikranth and Vishnu Vishal have been featured in the video.

This should be interesting. A noble project to be a part of. Incidentally, I have relatives in Tirunelveli and Chennai, and so this wrath of nature (caused of course by human folly) was felt closely by us. Thankfully, everyone came out safe and dry. Also, the missus happened to in Chennai just when the rains had begun, and she was lucky that hers was the last flight out of Chennai (and that after a delay of over 7 hours) before the airport shut operations for 4 days. Hope and pray that the Gods are kinder this year and forgiving of our misgivings.

First Major Release Of 2016 Wazir Opens Poorly

Wazir had a poor opening across the board with collections around 15%. The film was the first major release after three weeks but has found no interest with audience atleast initially. The morning shows are less than Farjan Akhtar’s last solo release Shaadi Ke Side Effects but is higher than the last two Amitabh Bachchan films Shamitabh and Piku. The latter had jumped considerably in the evening.
The film will depend on the reports and if good by chance even then these will have to reflect in collections fast. The film has a lot of screenings at multiplexes for a film of this genre and cast probably due to the Xmas releases coming to the end of their runs and a short run time. This can backfire when the audience is not there.
The other release Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure has not started too badly for an animation film mainly because there are only select screenings in the morning so occupancy is similar to Wazir at many multiplexes. This is also a Saturday film when families may come.

Dilwale grossed 10.75 crore nett in its third week. Despite the collection not being too good it is still the fourth highest third week collection of 2015. The collections of Dilwale till date are as follows.

TOTAL – 137,23,00,000
The collections came down to very low levels on Monday which means there is not much more to come. It should get over the 140 crore nett mark but not by much.

Bajirao Mastani Has Fourth Best Third Week Of All Time

Bajirao Mastani grossed 27 crore nett apprx in week three which is the second best third week of the year after Bajrangi Bhaijaan.. The collections of Bajirao Mastani till date are as follows.
Week One – 84,36,00,000
Week Two – 55,19,00,000
Week Three – 27,00,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 166,55,00,000
The third week collections is also the fourth highest of all time after PK, 3 idiots and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. No other film has collected over 25 crore nett in week three. The film had its first major drop on Monday though collections held fairly well after that. The postponement of Ghayal Returns means the film should cross 175 crore nett as it now will stay in theatres for two more weeks.

easily one of the most remarkable success stories of the contemporary period, all things considered. That it was able to do so with competition is even more incredible. No matter what any of us might have predicted for either film it’s safe to say that no one thought it was possible for BM to do so much or Dilwale to do so little. I’d still say Bhansali should have gone in for a solo release. Would have easily cleared 200 and maybe done a fair bit more. Either way this is the single most impressive result at that scale after the Aamir super-grossers. Nothing else is as remarkable because those are just functions of huge initials. But of course the link between those Aamir films and a film like BM is still trending. It underlines once again that you simply cannot get a spectacular box office result without this being a strong factor.

175 cr is an amazing run for such a movie and kudos to Ranvir for its richly deserved. If remember correctly he had to take a call between kjo’s Shuddhi and this one and the box office outcome of Ras Leela tilted him towards SLB. Shuddhi dreams still remain unfulfilled….. may be like BM another 10 years to the post.
Its time battle of supremacy shift to the younger lot and in someways, though unconsciously / inadvertently industry is trying give us the 3 prototypes here.
The flamboyant and massy Varun doing a Salman with Ranveer trying to fit in the energetic and sometime dynamic shoes of SRK and the thoughtful classy act of Ranbir in Aamir’s mould.

Not me. If anything Ranveer seems more “massy” to me, with Varun Dhawan the SRK-type breezy presence with sporadic attempts to “do something serious” (aa la Badlapur).

Saw parts of Bajirao…Ranveer is quite good in it. Really liked the way he worked on his diction. I would have to say he’s the real deal even if his off screen antics are revolting, to put it mildly!
I’ve only seen him in one complete film — Lootera and while he’s again good in his role, especially in the second half, I suspect Motwane should be given bigger credit for that. But after watching him in Bajirao one would have to be persuaded by his talent. I’m certainly not easily impressed by actors (after watching Bachchan everything becomes so mundane) but one has to give credit where it’s well deserved.
Varun Dhawan, on the contrary, has a poor dialogue delivery. Not bad in terms of facial expressions, but lines coming out of his mouth are a big turn off. I think he was the weak link in an otherwise fine Badlapur.

In terms of star-actors (male) who came after Bachchan, including the current lot, I’ve been impressed with the following:
Aamir (Lagaan onwards; loved him in PK)
Anil Kapoor (when he’s controlled by the director)
From the current lot, I think Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are undoubtedly the best. Ranbir is ok; don’t mind him but don’t care much for him either.

I don’t wish to get started on him, but I’d like to add one thing: there’s this thing called feedback. Time and again the audience has given him feedback that his looks are a big turn off (not saying these are the rules that I agree with, but these are the rules one has to work with) and he continues to kill any fortuitous chances that trickle down his way by virtually looking like Amol Palekar in a Ramesh Sippy film.
That apart, I don’t think he’s capable of giving good performances without good directors either…

And on the topic of films, it’s probably too late to say this, take it as a compliment that almost a year since its release, the best film I’ve seen in years is Interstellar.
Nothing even comes close; its content is watered down to reach a wider audience but its audacity of ideas, its mind-bending theories and of course, the execution were a pleasure to watch. I have no hesitation in saying that it’s the 2001: A Space Odyssey of our times. A fantastic spectacle (those sky-high waves in an intense gravitational field come to mind) but also a brilliant thought-provoking exercise. There are very essays that can do justice to this unqualified masterpiece.

I watched Varun’s Main Tera Hero and may be having common director was more of a reason, but was constantly reminded of Salman of Biwi # 1 or a Govinda from Saajan Chale Sasural.

Wazir is looking at first day figures of around 5.25 crore nett. The evening has seen a pick up but not the sort that suggests it will get that huge jump needed on Saturday. The collections are similar to Piku but that film had looked a 3 crore opener in the morning while this on morning numbers looked a 4.25 crore starter.
There will be growth on Saturday as Friday evening collections are better than the morning but probabbly not what it needs. The film is best in Mumbai city, Pune and Bangalore and that mainly thanks to the premium multiplexes in these cities. The mass region has not collected with Rajasthan struggling for just 25 lakhs nett.
The Christmas releases also saw falls at the start of the fourth week. Bajirao Mastani may get upto a 1 crore nett on its fourth friday but Dilwale will be much lower as its run is coming to an end.

Kazi Masum Akhtar deserves our attention because every act of intolerance, especially intolerance that leads to violence, deserves to be condemned with equal vigour. If VHP or Bajrang Dal vigilantes decide to strong-arm theatres to stop screening Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwaale in Mangalore because of his comments about “intolerance” or the Sri Ram Sene drag women out of pubs, they deserve to be condemned.
Those who threaten Vidya Dinker – the Citizens Forum activist in Mangalore fighting against the spate of “immoral policing”- with rape, assault and murder, should be charged just as those who beat up Akhtar should be charged with assault. When police turns a blind eye to verbal violence, harassment and intimidation because it fears “tension” it sends a green signal to thugs of all sides that they can get away with more.
And that is what seems to have happened in this case as well. The Mamata Banerjee government has actually been good at nipping attempts to create communal tension in the bud. (Remember the furore over the missing fourteen-year-old girl which given communal colours before she suddenly returned home?) But at the same time it has been accused of pandering to the minority community for votes. As a result the police seem unwilling or unable to stand up to bullying to protect the likes of a Kazi Masum Akhtar.
That is why we should ensure Kazi Masum Akhtar’s case is not just a local news footnote. In many ways he stood up for the national anthem. Hopefully the media will also stand up for him.

The car rationing “odd-even” scheme, which has reduced the traffic volume, has managed to bring down the peak level of pollution in the national capital to its “lowest”, a Supreme Court appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) has said.
EPCA said both particulate matter and nitrogen oxide load from cars have reduced substantially, by as much as “40 per cent”, in the first week of its implementation thus validating the importance of the car rationing measure.

Wazir Has A Low First Day

Wazir grossed a low 5.25 crore nett on day one with better collections in the evening which was always likely due to the type of film it is. The collections are smilar to Piku but the gains in the evening do not compare with film.
The film had its best collections in MumbaI city and Pune which meant that Mumbai circuit was best with around 1.75 crore nett. The other contributors were Delhi / UP at 1.20 crore, East Punjab with 64 lakhs and Mysore with 30 lakhs. All other circuits were less than 25 lakhs nett. The growth should come on Saturday but it needs the sort of growth which can take it over 20 crore nett for the weekend,
The other release Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure grossed around 30-35 lakhs nett which though low is actually one of the better opening day numbers for a Hindi animation film..

Bajirao Mastani grossed around 1 crore nett on its fourth Friday which is a good collection and the weekend should go to 4.5 crore nett plus. The collections of the film so far are around 167.50 crore nett. The postponement of Ghayal Returns means an extra week run and it should comfortably cross the 175 crore nett mark.
Dilwale grossed around 25 lakhs nett on its fourth Friday and the total collections now stand at 137.50 crore nett. The weekend should be 1 crore nett plus. The film has become the fourth highest grosser ever in West Bengal after 22 days.
The final difference in the films will be 35 crore nett plus in the favor of Bajirao Mastani though the gap in the distributor share will be only 11-12 crore.

The leads almost make us buy it all. Farhan Akhtar plays a more sombre variation of the guy-next-door-if-you-forget-he’s-from-a-film-family character he’s made his own, except that he may want to work on his drunken scenes – you almost hear the hic! As for Bachchan, he keeps mixing it up – one part gruff-hamminess (you feel, between chess games, he’s still teaching a visually impaired Rani Mukerji) and one part restraint (watch him gaze at nothing in particular and shed a tear for the past). These two could probably make you watch a movie in which they did nothing but… play chess.

The Danish Girl: Eddie Redmayne pulls it off again. It was a challenging role and he did quite well with the mannerisms and body language. There’s no doubt he is a good discovery, but I was quite enamoured by Alicia Vikander too. Both have been deservedly nominated for their respective parts in both the Golden Globes and BAFTA this year. The story is sensitively told although predictable
Danny Collins: Another predictable yet enjoyable film with a towering performance by Pacino. Nothing much to add here though. It’s one of those films you watch and enjoy while they last butforget quickly afterwards
Steve Jobs: More enjoyable and fun for those who’ve read the autobiography by the same name or who have followed hislife closely. Aided by good performances from the cast, long scenes and a tilting background score

Wazir has shown good growth on Saturday as collections look set to be in the 7.25 nett range. The growth will be around 35% from the first day. It is lopsided growth with big multiplexes in metros jumping 50% while other multiplexes outside metros showing lower jumps. There was no growth in single screens but its collections in single screens are also very low with maybe just 10-12% of its total business coming from single screens.
The second day number would have been ideal for its opening day collections but still the second day number puts it in a better position than after its first day business.
Similar growth on Sunday would really put the film in a good position but as the film is limited in appeal it would be a big surprise if its repeat performance on Sunday.

Actor Aamir Khan’s exit from the Incredible India campaign has not only set off a controversy after BJP MP Manoj Tiwari questioned his patriotism at a closed-door parliamentary panel meeting but also presents a conundrum over who should be Mr. Khan’s replacement.
Top sources in the Tourism Ministry told The Hindu that the choice coalesced around Amitabh Bachchan, but there was another, more dominant view that there should be a female celebrity as brand ambassador. “Apart from that, there is also a line of thinking that a sports icon could be considered for the position,” a top source said.
Actress Priyanka Chopra is a strong contender for female brand ambassador. “The Ministry has been mulling this over, and the new proposal came in just a couple of days ago. Whoever is chosen, the controversy over Aamir Khan has to be combated,” said the source.
Mr. Tiwari denied that he had questioned Mr. Khan’s patriotism, but admitted that he objected to his continuation as brand ambassador. The chairman of the standing committee on tourism and Trinamool Congress MP, K.D. Singh, asked Tourism Secretary Vinod Zutshi to give details of just who would be the brand ambassador and how much the person would be paid by the Ministry for the assignment. The report is to be submitted in 10 days.
Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma told The Hindu that the Ministry was finalising the names and modalities for this. “We are still looking at various options; nothing has been finalised,” he said. He did admit that there “were proposals” for multiple brand ambassadors, but nothing was finalised.

Aamir Khan is not only being replaced as the face of Incredible India, he is also being dropped from a mega road safety campaign in what appears to be a fallout of the “intolerance” controversy.
Government officials said the actor had been signed as the brand ambassador for the road safety campaign in December 2014 at the behest of Union minister Nitin Gadkari.
Road transport and highways minister Gadkari had personally approached Aamir after watching an episode of his TV talk show, Satyamev Jayate, in October that year. The episode was called “Road Accidents or Murders?”
“The minister thought the episode was very well researched and documented and was highly impressed with Aamir’s initiative to raise important social issues through his programme,” an official attached to Gadkari’s office said.
“Since the ministry was already looking to launch a countrywide campaign to spread awareness on safe practices on the road, Aamir seemed the best choice to be its face,” he said.
Aamir agreed to feature in television and print ads for the campaign free of cost after a meeting with Gadkari in Mumbai.
The ministry then engaged Piyush Pandey to create content for the public service ads, a director in the ministry’s transport division said.
“Several meetings were held with Pandey and ministry officials to decide the form and nature of the campaign. A meeting was then scheduled between the ad-maker and the minister last October but it did not happen because of a sudden change in Gadkari’s programme. So, it was postponed to December,” he said.
“In the meantime, Aamir had stirred a storm by commenting on the state of affairs in the country, and the ministry decided to choose somebody else in his place.”

With an updated gross of $764.4 million thru Wednesday, Jan. 7, Star Wars: the Force Awakens is officially the highest grossing film of all time in the domestic market. By the end of this coming weekend it will become the only film to cross $800 million domestically as the conversation then turns to its continuing international prospects.

It took a mere 20 days for the film to surpass the previous record of $760.5M held by Avatar, which not only took a total of 318 days to achieve, but was spread across two releases.
When adjusted for inflation Force Awakens still has a long, long way to go to top Gone with the Wind’s $1.73 billion, but it has moved to 20th position on the chart, just ahead of Raiders of the Lost Ark bringing to light another milestone.

Box Office: Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘The Revenant’ Tops ‘Star Wars’ With Boffo $14.4M Friday
What do U.S. Marshals, The Man With the Iron Mask, Grease have in common? They are the three films that topped Titanic on the Friday night of their opening weekends even while falling to second place to James Cameron’s Titanic as the mighty blockbuster came towards the end of its reign at the top of the charts. If you want to include The Book of Eli which topped its opening Friday of its Martin Luther King Day weekend debut even as Avatar eventually took the top slot for the frame, go for it.
So when I tell you that Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant was the top film last night, with $14.4 million, that doesn’t mean anything for Star Wars yet other than that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is following a hallowed tradition. It is the second-biggest film on Friday but it may yet top the weekend one last time before Ride Along 2 snatches the weekend crown next weekend. And if doesn’t, then The Revenant, which has now earned $15.96m total, is the new Lost In Space/Dear John.
But the real story of the weekend isn’t which film tops which, but rather the incredible opening weekend performance of The Revenant. Lest anyone doubt my somewhat tongue-in-cheek post from last month about how we must never let Leonardo DiCaprio win an Oscar lest he stop making the kind of films that merit Oscar consideration, well um, here you go. The Revenant, a dark, long, grueling and hyper-violent period piece survival story is going to open with around $38 million this weekend (better than the $37m debut of Lone Survivor on this weekend in 2014), and it’s almost entirely on the strength of DiCaprio’s star power.

BOI is in hurry to declare it flop on third day itself .. though it has not dropped yet. To be fair, its India business looking at 45-50 Crore if sustains well on Monday. Badlapur with higher budget and poor overseas collections was Hit at this number. Wazir has good overseas collections as PLUS .. and 60% of its investment already recovered from satellite. So its a win-win situation.

Let’s not play blame games again here and ridicule BOI. Whenever a Bachchan movie releases, BOI is presented as a villain by Bachchan fanatics just to hide Bachchan’s inability to deliver at B.O. If one takes note of BOI they throw lesser nos for every movie as compared to official nos whereas, other sites give official nos. So, the difference is always there. But it’s the Bachchan fanatics who aren’t ready to face the reality and hence accuse BOI for under reporting Bachchan filmsevery time just to prove their point that Bachchan is still a big force at ticket window. I think Bachchan is the only star in this world who enjoys a concession at boxoffice and that’s, despite delivering duds at B.O since three decades he’s still branded as biggest superstar of univers who’s above boxoffice. But in reality he’s has just become a paper tiger and nothing else and this sort of persona is found in imagination of his fanatics only. Whenever somebody points out it, the fanatics start playing victims and start crying from rooftops that some serious conspiracy is going on against Bachchan and even age factor is brought forward then. But when one argues about the age of Rajni, they’r speechless at that time.
Anyway, the Wazir is going on the same lines like his previous movies have been going and there’s no exception here as well.

Bajirao Mastani had a decent weekend with around 4 crore more coming in. It currently stands around the 175 crore mark. On the other hand Dilwale has now started collecting in lakhs and couldn’t progress much. It has pushed its way to the 147 crore total.

Worldwide box office collection: Farhan-Amitabh starrer Wazir nearing Rs 50 crore mark
After witnessing a slow start at the box office, “Wazir” business went up on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, “Wazir” business went up by 27%, while on Sunday the film witnessed a growth of 15%. The growth in the box office collection of “Wazir” was mainly due to rave reviews that built a strong buzz over the weekend.
“#Wazir fares well at premium plexes of metros. Sustaining on weekdays is crucial. Fri 5.61 cr, Sat 7.16 cr, Sun 8.24 cr. Total: ₹ 21.01 cr,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
“Wazir”, which mostly targeted niche audience, performed well at multiplexes across India, especially in the Mumbai circuit. Collections from Mumbai circuit are at par compared to other circuits, Box Office India reported.

out of the films nominated here…I’ve only watched BM, Dilwale, BB and Tamasha. Think Ranveer and Deepika were the best this year and BM was the best film. I think Ranveer will actually will win it and Alka Yagnik should win also which would be her first since 2005 I think. Overall an accurate list.

Was watching Stardust awards; SRK and Kajol performed with self tribute. They(Farah and Retiesh) sang hosannaas about him being romance god. In reality it has been his bane. He could never come out of that image and do different roles.

I think it was proved that somethings are just better left for reminiscing…and not forced to be re-created. SRK’s biggest challenge for years has been to try and find a medium of re-creating a bit of his past and try something new…it hasn’t worked out so well (in terms of trying to find something new). Can he be accepted in a “different” persona…I guess we will find out this year.

Once bitten twice shy. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Monday refused to comment on Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali’s upcoming performance in the eastern metropolis because of how people react whenever he makes political or religious remarks.

Censor Board orders 150 cuts in KKHH3?
Ever since the promos of Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 hit the internet, it was obvious that the film would have a nightmare while securing a certificate from the Censor Board. However, as per a report on BollywoodLife.com, nobody expected the Censors to order as many as 150 cuts from the film and that too for obtaining an adult certificate! Yes, you read it right. From the trailers, it seems as if the entire film is filled with double meaning or suggestive jokes. So, if you order these many cuts, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 might just turn into a short film!

‘IT’LL BE AN HONOUR TO BE PUNCHED BY RAJINI SIR’
Says Akshay Kumar, who’s all excited about playing the baddie in ‘Robot 2’; the actor who explodes on screen on Republic Day has his own take on Incredible India and intolerance.
Akshay Kumar remembers watching T Rama Rao’s 1983 Bollywood drama, Andha Kanoon, and being mesmerised by Rajinikanth’s kicks and jumps. “Today, the action may seem a little funny, but at that time I would be gaping at the screen, wondering how Rajini sir did what he did. It was a marvel in technique and technology!” the actor reminisces, still in awe of the South supremo he will be challenging as the adversary in the Robot sequel.
Ask him if working with the Thalaiva is a dream come true and he laughs, “These things don’t come to you even in a dream. He’s a wonderful actor and even more, a wonderful human being. It will be an honour to be punched by Rajini sir. It’s going be a different world for me — the graphics, the action and the adulation that he commands.” Buzz is, The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was in the running for the role. “I have no idea, I just know that Shankar (director) and some of the others called me and told me they had a film for me,” he shrugs.
However, before Robot 2, Akshay will bring in the Republic Day with his coproduction Airlift. He insists it gave him gooseflesh when it was narrated to him. “I was shocked to know that in 1990 not Air Force pilots but commercial pilots of Air India flew into a war zone and rescued one lakh 70 thousand Indians trapped in Kuwait. We can make another film on these pilots alone. They were the real heroes,” he exults.
Bring up the intolerance debate and he retorts, “India has always been known for its tolerance. We’ve always tried to keep peace but when attacks like the one at Pathankot happen, you realise that the time has come to retaliate. Going by what you read in the social media, our youngsters are angry, they have taken this personally, and want India to attack too.”
With Aamir Khan’s exit India needs a new brand ambassador, interested? “I don’t know if I’m fit for it but if I get a chance, it would be an honour. India is truly incredible!” he exults.
Meanwhile, a new season of the reality show he has hosted is coming up but the Khiladi doesn’t have anything to do with the dangerous stunts this time around. “I wasn’t approached this time,” he says shortly, pointing out that there’s nothing on television for now but lots on the big screen, including Houseful 3, the “relief film” and “fun franchise”. However, he’s clueless about Dhadkan 2 and Hera Pheri 3 but Namaste England will definitely roll this year and so will Rustom, in which he plays a naval officer and which is set for the Independence Day weekend release. He’d be happy if Sanjay Leela Bhansali were to helm the Rowdy Rathore sequel. “He’s a great director, and I’m a huge fan. I’ve just seen his film (Bajirao Mastani), Ranveer (Singh) has so much energy,” he asserts.
His wife Twinkle is now a published author and Akshay is a proud man. “It’s great the way she made a name for herself, first as an actress, then a designer, a columnist and now an author. She has a wonderful sense of humour which is very different from mine and that is the best part about our household. It’s like East meets West,” he laughs.
Does he harbour ambitions of writing too, maybe his biography some day ? “No, I know my limitations. There are bigger legends to write about, I’m still a struggler,” he says modestly.

Must say the Akshay is going through probably his best phase right now wrt his choices. Had he been more calculated during his peak he really could have amounted to something with his current filmography. As it stands he also seems liberated in a way where he seems to be resigned to the fact that he is not in the ranks of an Aamir, Salman and Hrithik/SRK… so he is actually content with the Special 26, Baby, OMG, Airlift, type films which cannot really do much beyond a point. Look forward to the Robot sequel. This should be interesting. He’s good when bad (Ajnabee, Aflatoon, Khiladi 420)

I think Akshay is in a different Rank than Aamir, Salman. Along with the two he is ruling Hindi Film Industry.
IMO, there are three business models now –
[1] One Film in 15 months – Beat the records
Aamir rules in this model from No 1 to 5 and followed by Hrithik at No 6 and no other actor really. Hats off to Aamir for creating this business model which is borrowed from Rajnikant who does the same in Tamil films
[2] 2 Films in 15 months – Come close to the record
Salman Rules here with SRK following him. In late 90s, SRK was the King of this model. Ranbir Kapoor is following the same model but off late has been struggling at BO though his performance is still appreciated.
[3] 4 films in 15 months – No records but experiment max
Akshay Kumar rules this model followed by Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, and almost every successful new comer.
So arguing that Akshay is not in the same league is not understanding the above three models that starts are adopting. Each model has its merits and cannot be compared.

Wazir had a big fall on Monday with collections down 55% from Monday. More than the drop it is the low level the collections have fallen to. The first four day business of Wazir is as follows.

TOTAL – 22,40,00,000
The weekend performance was not great and for any content film it has to be a 40% drop on Monday from Friday at a minimum. The film is almost a certain FLOP now with the first week business heading for around 28-29 crore nett.

They have those two categories, yes… but over the past many years now the Comedy/Musical category has come to mean any film that is not drama. They might as well change the classification. American Hustle and The Martian are recent examples that took home Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) and Leonardo DiCaprio and Amy Adams are examples of those adjudged comedic performances. I mean, come on! Moreover, the Globes has come to symbolise a night when Hollywood lets its hair down… everyone is in high spirits and frankly they nominate stars, not necessarily actors. Johnny Depp was himself quite uncomfortable with his nomination for the universally panned The Tourist. It is now accepted more as the final pit-stop where you polish your acceptance speeches before the more serious and actual business of Guild Awards and eventually the Oscars.

The essence of these award shows worldwide are very well depicted albeit in a very humorous manner by the host of Golden Globe here and were perhaps the best lines from his hilarious opening monologue
Ricky Gervais : “If you do win tonight, remember that no one cares about that award as much as you do. OK? Don’t get emotional — it’s embarrassing. That award is — no offense — worthless. It’s a bit of metal that some nice old confused journalists wanted to give you in person so they could meet you and have a selfie with you. That’s all it is. I’ve got three Golden Globes, myself. One’s a doorstop, one I use to hit burglars with and one I keep by the bed to — doesn’t matter why. It’s mine! I won it fair and square. It’s just the right shape and size. It’s nothing. So to be clear: That was a joke about me shoving Golden Globes — that I’ve won — up my ass. And they asked me to host four times!”

Wazir starring Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar took a decent start at the box office and showed a decent growth over its opening weekend. The film made a business of 21 crores at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
Wazir has also shown an average performance in the overseas circuits.
The film collected $600K in the US/Canada circuits whereas a decent $450K in the gulf circuits. The Bejoy Nambiar thriller scored an opening weekend of 10.48 crores from the overseas circuits.
Being the first big star release of 2016, the film has fared quite decently. Also considering the film’s genre not being an out and out commercial, the average performance is acceptable.

Even taking into account the political motivations that sometimes spring up, the National Awards are a far more credible and film-centric institution than any of the major American awards. Shows Masand’s populist mindset when it comes to such things.
Furthermore, the Oscars are equally as fluffy and entertainment-led as the Filmfares, just that the mode of entertainment is a Western one. Masand assumes this to be more “credible” than a Ranveer Singh dance performance because of his world view, when objectively speaking there is nothing that makes Seth McFarlane’s “We Saw Your Boobs” sketch any more credible. Personally, I’d rather see the dances and have Kapil spout one liners, as thsee are traditions that essentially are rooted in our folk culture. Why beg for this bland globalisation where everything is American!?!
Yes Bollywood award shows are a farce, but the Oscars are just a quieter, more undercover farce. If you want a stern, serious awards ceremony, go for the NationalAwards!!

We (Indian) know Rehman has given much better music. Frankly I don’t understand the music nuance to say one music is better than other. To me, is it melodious or not.
Titanic won all awards but nothing for acting. A better film doesn’t always equate to good acting. Many people wanted ET to win but Gandhi won the best picture.
Acting parameters are more consistent in Oscar than best film which has much more subjectivity.

I will not get into whether the awards show here need to have dance performances, etc. Pasand apni apni. I also do not think that we need to adopt any American or British humour, and frankly it won’t go well with our sensibilities and traditions. Although I must point out that in recent years, with hosts SRK, Saif, K-Jo, Riteish, etc. this is precisely what is being attempted- an American brand of humour. And I don’t see how Kapil Sharma is better off than the worst comedians anywhere in the world… but then I never really understood the big deal about Kapil ‘Babaji Ka Thullu’ Sharma! There is so much crass Delhi humour that I can take… and his one-liners have no roots in any Indian traditions, please.
About the Oscars… surely, there is a great deal of lobbying involved there. But as the gentleman above me has pointed out (MSDhoni), just the fact that they telecast it live lends it some credibility. And apart from that, and I say this with some amount of authority having been an Oscar-phile since 1999, there is a system to it. Do i believe that they always honour the best in a given year in film (a qualifier by nature subjective)? Of course not. But recognition from an ever-growing pool of your peers, even if that recognition depends on how many eyeballs your film screenings can garner, is anyday a much more valid indicator of what ‘stood out’ in a given year in film… unlike who cozied up to a sponsor more and/or who agreed to perform only on condition of being given some random ‘superstar power-star’ award!
Also, unlike the awards here, there is a whole Oscar season. It is 3 months of precursor awards that are divided into critics bodies from various states and cities to individual guilds… and then of course the academies of Britain and Australia, etc. The Oscars then become a culmination of sorts… where one can play psephologist and predict a given year and where the general mood is tilting.
The whole process is also much more scientific. So to be nominated, you can be voted by members across the board… but to be awarded, only those from your branch can vote for you. So a Brokeback Mountain may get nominated on the strength of the members across the categories, that it loses to Crash shows the general demographic of the producers and the respective guild that voted for the winner eventually. This is a negative, but an indicator nevertheless. Conversely, when an Ang Lee wins the Oscar twice for Best Director, he knows automatically just how much he is respected by his fellow filmmakers. Our awards can never be such psychosocial indicators.

Every year while watching the Golden Globes and the Oscars, I find myself thinking about our own Bollywood award shows and how they can be improved from the tedious, over-long affairs that they have become. How they can be turned into a credible event that the film community actually wants to attend, and doesn’t just have to attend because they’re getting paid to.
Right off the bat let’s acknowledge the fact that it’s hard, given that there are so many Bollywood awards, and not one definitive one: Filmfare, Screen, Stardust, Guild, IIFA, Big Star Entertainment, at least a few more that don’t immediately come to mind, and then the newer ones that mushroom every year.
But hey, Hollywood has a bunch of awards too: the Oscars, the Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards, the SAG Awards, the Directors Guild, the Producers Guild, plus every other Guild awards.
But let’s not digress. Bollywood needs at least one credible film awards. And here’s a nine-step plan on how to do it.
1. Telecast the event live
That’s how Filmfare used to do it back in the day, before greedy TV channels decided they could garner way more advertising and viewer interest if they teased moments from the show for weeks leading up to the telecast.”
Of course if one of the awards shows did decide to go live, they’d have to get their act together. No tardy arrivals, no fake reaction shots inserted into acceptance speeches, no teleprompter glitches. You’d have to get the best guys in the business to put the thing together. At one of the awards events recently, a heavy sandbag from a ramp several feet above the stage fell to the ground, narrowly missing Sneha Rajani, co-producer of Piku, bang in the middle of her acceptance speech. She was rattled to say the least. That cannot happen.
2. Scrap the dance performances
It’s an awards ceremony (at least it’s meant to be!) not a variety entertainment show.
We’ll tune in to any one of the dozen odd dance/reality show appearances that movie stars make while promoting their films if we want to see them dance. Nobody wants to see those performances at an awards show – not the guys in the room attending the event, and not the guys watching it at home on TV – not if it means that the whole event gets stretched over five hours.
I understand that TV channels need those performances, because that’s what they promote through hoardings and TV spots. They need movie stars up there on stage because it’s the stars that bring the advertising. But you’ve got to reinvent the wheel. Bring the stars up as presenters for all the awards, not just the major ones. Stop calling sponsors and TV channel heads to the stage to present awards. Find new and interesting ways to bring more stars to the stage – get them to introduce the nominated films like the Oscars and the Globes do. Just don’t make them dance.
3. Make it a shorter event
Chances are that the show will become roughly an hour and a half shorter if you do away with the live performances. But that’s not enough. Stick to a script. Encourage presenters to do so too. Ask winners to keep their acceptance speeches short or risk being drowned out by cue music.
Bollywood awards shows currently run into anything between three-and-a-half and five hours. Think of everyone in that room: Tired, hungry, sleepy, pissed off.

Award shows are dime a dozen. Even some stars homes cant afford to store up all those awards. Though tv is the main culprit for degrading awards shows, the stars themselves are to be blamed for attending every award function to get more visibility, publicity and popularity. Those who are too star struck still watch these shows. And there is one diva who has no work wants to attend every function to show off how young she looks even now. And other oldies are following her example.

Well rounded analysis by Komal and raghav which point is he talking about life destroying losses to distributors on Dilwale. He just mentions they will go through some losses whereas SRK will make a lot of money. In fact he was more harsh on pricing of Baby, Shandaar and Bombay Velvet and even wnet to last year release Jai Ho.
That brings to the core question – Is it actor/star’s fault for cashing in on their stardom and why are they required to do social service for these eager beaver distributors. If movie performs badly then it simply becomes an economic parameter of demand and supply and the actor will be hurt by the nonperformance thereon. Further there is a shortage of movie stars who can actually connect with the audience so somewhere its audience fault which has become very choosy and allows only a Ranbir type of actor to charge 30-40 cr for a movie.
Lastly in this age of quick fix and spot fixing how can a star truly rely on the intent of the producer/ distributors and if they are there for the art and craft or moolah. Why should he be responsible for third party failure if the other crew cannot get their act together. What is Ranbir’s fault if he gives 6 months to a movie like Bombay Velvet but the counter-parties come up with godawful product. uske toh lag gaye…..
More than stars, its the director who are totally awful these days who cannot make a simple, logical, lucid, reasonable movie otherwise one cannot explain a HNY, Dilwale or PRDP kind of product which gets all support from their stars and had everything going except coherent direction / editing and presentation.

There are three successful business models in Film Industry –
[1] One Film in 15 months – Beat the records
Aamir rules in this model from No 1 to 5 and followed by Hrithik at No 6 and no other actor really. Hats off to Aamir for creating this business model which is borrowed from Rajnikant who does the same in Tamil films
[2] 2 Films in 15 months – Come close to the record
Salman Rules here with SRK following him. In late 90s, SRK was the King of this model. Ranbir Kapoor is following the same model but off late has been struggling at BO though his performance is still appreciated.
[3] 4 films in 15 months – No records but experiment + earn max
Akshay Kumar rules this model followed by Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, and almost every successful new comer.

See I don’t want to b dragged in an endless debate… so you can continue believing that this has always been Akshay’s game plan all along, but pray I fail to understand how doing Chandni Chowk to China, Kambakht Ishq and De Dana Dan in 2009 or Housefull, Khatta Meetha, Action Replay and Tees Maar Khan in 2010 and Thank You and Desi Boyz in 2011 is in any way reflective of a model of experimenting! I’d think you should be happy as an Akshay fan that he is doing the reasonably alternative by way of Holiday, etc. but accept that he has reached here only after having realized that he can’t break a certain ceiling. Had he mixed those years I mentioned after his truly breakthrough 2007, with the kind of films he is doing now, he probably would be enjoying a far greater share of the spoils. Akshay comes across as a sensible person and he would be the first to admit and acknowledge his limitations. I don’t see why on cannot be happy with his current crop of films without also wanting to have the crown of perfecting some alternative Box Office model.

Which new comer is following Akki model ? Ranveer just has Befikre and Varun has that Dishoom…Same with Ranbir who hardly has much on plate considering youth factor.
Meanwhile Akshay has Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom, Namastey England and Robot 2, has also agreed to do A.R. Murugadoss’ Katthi remake. So definitely Akki is making hay big time and these youngsters are sitting twiddling their thumbs.
On the other hand, SRK is the next one who is joining the Akki model and as per reports after 3 releases this year has signed two more (Imtiaz & Anand Rai or YRF next movie co-starring Ranveer)

Due limitations on multi tasking ( as admitted by Aamir himself ), he will never be able to follow this model. Next one to join the multi project bandwagon will be Salman and Ajay before waning out to senior citizen roles. So these guys are set to be around for another 5 years exerting sufficient power and authority.
I feel similar to Hritithik- Abhi bracket, this current generation of stars ( Ranveer , Ranbir, Varun) may not be able to flex much muscle too and the ‘next big thing’ will come a generation later………

Here the knavery out full in the open by BOI’s “Inventive” commentary on Dil Wale’s overseas collections! Suddenly South Africa, Singapore, Germany, Nepal and last but the most important market “Timbuktu” must also have shattered many a record!! And $3.76 Lacs are way too much for Bollywood but 20 million in China by PK was just very little in comparison as it’s print and publicity cost was too costly for it to make any profit, “if at all”. And here BOI is quoting figures from Nepal to Netherlands without revealing the no. of prints and cost of publicity and telling people how big Dil Wale has been through their “6th,5th,4th and all-time records” in Hindi films “Biggest markets”!!

– Touching 35cr is looking impossible now the way film is heading. Hope Farhan smells the coffe and stops acting in movies. It’s better for him to focus on direction only as that’s the best thing he can do. On the other hand Bachchan should work with big stars so that boxoffice is kept alive and his acting is recognised. He’d acted well in Shamitabh and has done same in Wazir but the irony is that when a film flops, everything goes to dustbin itself.

Q. Why is it in an industry that easy to avoid a clash, it would have been so easy for Bajirao Mastani or Dilwale to move so both films can make 50 crore extra to what they made?
Ans. Its not as easy as that. There is a 300 crore plus pot available on Eid, Christmas and Diwali so its not easy to move to another date where the pot goes down to 225 or even 200 crore and leave the big one for the other film. Both films will not have done much 50 more if they came solo outside a holiday period. But if on xmas they were solo then would have added 50 crore extra for sure. Bajirao Mastani could have been even more.

I don’t know if I should applaud the candid admission or marvel its audacious acceptance of what transpires as normal. So even if you are a contender… you really must ‘want’ it too, and then of course make a few deals. Ha!

The film is still running and is a little short of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which is the second highest grosser Worldwide at present. The top Worldwide grossers of 2015 till now are as follows
1. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 603.39 crore
2. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – 365.45 crore
3. Dilwale – 355 crore apprx (Still Running)

At one stage it had looked that Bajirao Mastani may catch Dilwale in terms of Worldwide collections but Dilwale has maintained its lead over due to its continued strong run Overseas..

The entire entertainment fraternity is expressing outrage over the arrest of Kiku Sharda for mimicking Godman, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan on his TV show. Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor has also done the same, but he has gone several steps ahead by challenging the authorities to arrest him. He shared a picture of the MSG actor with the caption, “See this picture!I would like to play this rockstar in a film. Let me see who puts me behind bars? Go Kiku Sharda!”.

For quite some time now I have been reading short stories, listening actually, from audio recordings, and marvelling at the pleasure they offer, in terms of precision of craft, beauty of language, and a strong, concentrated impact. ‘Wazir’ is that rare Hindi film that offers such a pleasure…of a good story well told, without distraction, without flab, leaving behind a delectable aftetaste.
Director Bijoy Nambiar wastes no time in getting the story off the ground. It opens with a moody song shot in slow-mo which takes us through the marriage of Anti-Terrorist Squad officer Danish and Ruhana , the birth of their daughter Noorie and their happy life together. The family is on their way to a dance performance of Ruhana when Dansih gives a chase to a fugitive terrorist, leading to Noorie getting killed. Ruhana blames Dansih for it. Danis too is racked by guilt. Quickly enough, we encounter the next turn in the tale, when Danish meets wheel-chair bound Pandit Omkarnath Dhar who too is trying to come to terms with loss, especially the death of his daughter in the house of a minister Izaad Qureshi.
And then magic unfolds on screen.
If you want to attend a masterclass in acting, you have to watch Amitabh Bachchan slip into the role of Pandiji and watch the play of myriad expressions on his face, and listen to every line – some sad, some playful, some angry, some indulgent, some a drunken slur – delivered with precise voice control and a cadence that is his own. Frahan Akhtar is an adequate foil holding up his angst and anger-ridden persona quite consistently in a largely one-note role. The relationship that emerges between the two is the touching undercurrent that powers the film. While talking of performances, one must mention Manav Kaul and Aditya Rao Hydari who leave a mark with their performance and presence as Quershi and Ruhana respectively.
And there is the story.
I must confess here that I usually find Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s writing efforts – from Kareeb to Eklavya – quite pretentious and unbearable, containing the germ of a high concept but lacking in satisfactory execution. But here he seems to have redeemed himself fabulously, with a little help from Abhijat Joshi and Bijoy Nambiar perhaps. No wonder he insists on underscoring ‘An Original Story by…’ at many points of the credit titles.
Here is a story that is well-rounded with many threads and nuances coming together seamlessly and amply justifying the film’s title. It does not require a deep knowledge of chess to appreciate the central construct of the film’s theme – just a passing acquaintances with the basic rules of the game, which anyone who has played chess should know. The rule relevant to the film, known as ‘ Promotion’, allows a pawn ( Piada) to be exchanged for any other piece, including the most powerful Queen ( Wazir) when it reaches the last row or the 8th rank, most often changing the course of the end game. That’s how a ‘piada’ or pawn can challenge a king or ‘badshah’. Without giving anything further away, I can quote just one line by Panditji, “ Mere paas pair nahin, hathyar nahin, main kya karta? ” The whole trajectory starting from Danish finding the wallet of Panditji at the burial site of Noorie is well-etched, the only bit that does not fully convince being the recorded voice of the Wazir. The plot invention is simple and some may be able to guess it well before it is revealed, but no one being able to guess what is coming has never been a big deal for me in a story. It is about how beautifully things fit together in the end. And the simple central plot device here is enriched by my many sub-strands of relationships and moments, making it a rich enough tapestry.

Poor chap, Aamir, being hounded by sundry BJ P politicos ( like the latest , Ram Madhav or that Bhojpuri actor- politician Manoj Tiwary), or simply attacked on and on ad nauseum by social media commenters….it’s beyond reason this campaign against Aamir, for one off the cuff remark. The actor has been tweeting and FB- posting every week, since Christmas — and the haters land up on his FB page with their sarcastic comments. Looks like he will never be forgiven. But the PM’s talk about Indians being ashamed of being Indians( till he and BJP came along) — few bothered to protest the ludicrous comment ( made last summer in Seoul, repeated differently in Shanghai). And they term Aamir a hypocrite.

Bollywood actor Rajesh Vivek who was best know for his role of astrologer ‘Guran’ in Lagaan(2001) passed away today following a heart attack.
He was 66 years old and was shooting for his upcoming film in Hyderabad during which he got a heart attack. His body will be brought back to Mumbai tomorrow morning following which his funeral will take place at Versova cremation ground, Mumbai.

He was a theater actor and has starred in many Bollywood movies including ‘Swades’ where he was seen playing the role of a postmaster. During the beginning of his career he established his mark in B-town by playing villain in Veerana and Joshilay.
Later on, he started doing comic roles and was also seen in mythological television series Mahabharat where he played Veda Vyasaya.
This versatile actor was also a part of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Whats Your Rashee? Bunty Aur Babli, etc.

Everyone inside B-Town is (or at least they should be) squirming. What if all their names were called out, too?
Now that Asha Parekh has been named and shamed, let’s bring out all the dirt from under the (red) carpet. The yesteryear actress did a bad, bad thing by asking/lobbying for an award, right? So while everyone outside the industry is laughing at Ms Parekh, everyone inside B-Town is (or at least they should be) squirming. Because they all have pulled tricks to win awards. What if all their names were called out, too?
The rule
The mistake the senior actress made was to negotiate the award for herself. Obviously, she didn’t know the rules. This is how it works — An invite goes to an actor’s house, the manager makes a call to the publication house (Filmfare, Screen, Stardust or some channel) and makes it clear that the nominated star is busy shooting/ out of town/ has a prior commitment so he/she won’t be able to make it. Unless, of course, they are winning the award. In which case the star will make the effort to come for the award function, even if it means flying in from another city. A star’s confirmation for attending the award function comes only after the promise of one. And if the actor is not nominated for any award, a special category must be created — like Star Of The Year, Entertainer Of The Year, Most Special performance Of The Year, etc etc. Every actor and actress who attends an award function comes back home with an award. Think that’s a coincidence?
The exception
The only actor who does go to award functions and comes back home without the shiny trophy is Salman Khan. Earlier this month, he dropped into the Stardust awards function. He left even the venue long before the Best Actor award was announced, even though he was nominated in the Best Actor category for Bajrangi Bhaijaan. I recall, a few years ago, he was performing at an award function when they announced his name as the winner for Best Actor. He showed zero interest in collecting the trophy, choosing to stay backstage in his van. It was up to his brother Arbaaz to accept it on his behalf.Only-ifs
A few years ago, an actress who delivered a smashing hit of a biopic, was nominated for Critics’ Choice Best Actress. She refused to enter the venue. She parked outside and called from her car and announced that she would only come in, if she was winning the award.
Another actress, another award ceremony. This foreign import wasn’t even nominated for an award, she was performing and was in her van. When she was told that a seat was reserved for her in front of the stage, she said she would only sit in the audience, if they gave her an award. For the next one hour, she kept calling to check if they’d decided what she would win.
It’s the same story every year. Talk to any team behind an award function and you will hear all about the bullying, pleading and emotional blackmailing from the stars, their managers and their families.
But, then…
That’s not all. Even the stars called to present the awards have their list of demands. Sridevi refused to go up on a stage a couple of years ago because she felt she should be giving away a popular award to a mega star and not a Lifetime Achievement Award to a faded star. Rekha only wants to announce the Best Actor/Actress. I could go on… but it’s pointless.
The situation is not likely to change. It’s all a sham. So many award functions, so little credibility.
It started with Aamir Khan, followed by Salman and now Kangana. Maybe if more actors ban awards things will change. The stars have to change first and then the system will change. Until then, enjoy the song-and-dance at award shows.
Know one thing… when actors squeal in delight or gasp in surprise when their name is announced as the winner, it’s because they are pleased that the commitment made them was fulfilled.
