Aligarh, Neerja (ongoing), the rest of the box office

last week’s thread

  1. The two main releases of the week Tere Bin Laden – Dead Or Alive and Aligarh opened to a very response with collections not even reaching 10%. The latter hardly has any shows before noon. A city like Delhi has none but whichever big city had shows like Hyderabad it was a very bad opening. The film is reported to be on homosexuality so a limited audience becomes even more limited..

Tere Bin Laden – Dead Or Alive is a sequel to the 2010 film Tere Bin Laden. This film did not do much at the box office but managed to run for 4-5 weeks so a small minority may have liked it but its probably too small in numbers to benefit a sequel.

Neerja looks set to dominate this week as well because unless the new releases see a major pick up, Neerja will have better collections despite being its eighth day.

There were other releases like Bollywood Diaries, Jab Tum Kaho, Love Shagun and The Best Seller but collections were negligible.

  2. Neerja has done very well in its first week grossing around 34.50 crore nett. The film picked up pace fast on day one and has maintained very well over the weekdays as fas as business in metros are concerned. The film was made entertainment tax free in Maharashtra on the seventh day and this helped on day seven collections in Mumbai city and Pune. Most other cities in Maharashtra are not good so benefit will be minimal there. Other states could follow but it will be Delhi, Punjab and Karnataka which can give really give a big boost if they go tax free.

The best business for the film has come in Delhi city which has clocked a huge 4.50 crore nett and this is the city not including the rest of the circuit.

The lifetime business of the film will cross 50 crore nett and could even be by the end of week two. Films like Kahaani and Queen grossed 57 crore nett and 61 crore nett respectively and Neerja should have a similar finish and possibly more depending how the next few weeks play out.

  4. I hate to have to say it, but the conclusion stares us in the face: We’re a stupid country, full of loud, illiterate and credulous people. Trump has marched straight to the nomination without offering anything like a platform or a plan. With a vocabulary of roughly a dozen words – wall, Mexicans, low-energy, loser, Muslims, stupid, China, negotiate, deals, America, great, again – he’s bamboozled millions of Americans. And it’s not just splenetic conservatives supporting Trump or your garden-variety bigots (although that’s the center of his coalition), it’s also independents, pro-choice Republicans, and a subset of Reagan Democrats.

This says something profoundly uncomfortable about our country and our process. A majority of Americans appear wholly uninterested in the actual business of government; they don’t understand it and don’t want to. They have vague feelings about undefined issues and they surrender their votes on emotional grounds to whoever approximates their rage. This has always been true to some extent, but Trump is a rubicon-crossing moment for the nation.

  6. Neerja held on well on its eight day easily outpacing the new releases. The film grossed around 2.50-2.75 crore nett on day eight which is a small drop from Thursday. This drop mainly came due to the 20% loss of shows at major multiplexes from the Thursday.

Some of this loss was compensated by weekend ticket rates and a little by tax free status in a few states. The film has tax free status in a few states but only Maharashtra is implemented as yet. The business of the film of the film is 37.50 crore nett plus in eight days.

The weekend should go to 12 crore nett which will mean it will reach 50 crore nett before the end of the week. The drop from day one is around 40-45%. The weak new releases have also aided the film a lot and looks set to take advantage of the weak period of 3-4 weeks.

  7. This week saw 11 Hindi films release with two films Aligarh and Tere Bin Laden – Dead Or Alive managing to get good releases but shows don’t mean collections as both films had very poor reults.

Tere Bin Laden – Dead Or Alive which is a sequel of the 2010 film Tere Bin Laden grossed a little under 1 crore nett. Tere Bin Laden in 2010 had collected 70 lakhs nett on 375 screens and that had opened to dull collections but still the opening was much better than the sequel released in 2016.

Aligarh is a total washout and considering the topic of the film it is expected. The film won’t even reach 50 lakhs nett on day one. Bigger films having homosexual characters are unable to survive as its just not accepted so a smaller film like Aligarh had good chances of going this way. The makers tried to give t a chance with a strategy of mainly late shows due to mature adult content but to of no avail as weak content.

    • Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan prefers releasing his film during Christmas, but this year the actor might give a miss to his lucky period. As per reports, Aamir might not release his much-awaited film “Dangal” during that specific festive season.

Aamir is likely to reschedule the release date of “Dangal” and make it an Independence Day release. The actor is “seriously contemplating” advancing the release of his film because “Dangal” is high on patriotism, Hindustan Times reports.

“In all likelihood, Aamir is going to move the film’s release date to the Aug. 15 weekend. Since the movie is almost ready, doing so shouldn’t be an issue. He feels that since the film strongly showcases love for the nation, it would be perfect to bring the movie out on Independence Day,” an insider told HT.

There has been no official confirmation regarding this, but the report suggests Aamir has already started working on rescheduling the release date. Also, during an interview, which is yet to be aired on TV, Aamir said the film is a patriotic and emotional story and thus the best time to release it would be in August.

“It is a patriotic film, and [talks] about the empowerment of the daughters of India, where I play the role of a father to four daughters. My character carries a dream of winning a gold medal for India, which his daughters fulfil for him. It is a very patriotic and emotional story. So, I believe that the best day to release this film would be Aug. 15,” sources quote the actor as saying during the interview, according to HT.

Meanwhile, three big movies, starring Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan, are releasing during the Independence Day period. Hrithik’s “Mohenjo Daro,” Akshay’s “Rustom” and Abhishek’s “Phir Hera Pheri 3” are slated to release Aug. 12, and if Aamir changes the release date of “Dangal” to then, it will face tough competition from all three movies.

The film’s screen count has almost doubled from last week to around 4000 across the country, which means it has over 75% market share already in terms of visibility and reach. The film went on to collect 3.15 crore more on its second Friday and as a result stands at 38.47 crore mark. The film is set to jump big today and tomorrow and it won’t be surprising if the 50 crore* milestone is crossed within 10 days. Fox is going all out to ensure that the film adds on to being one of the most prestigious Hits in their repertoire.

    • Neerja has crossed wazir and is on its way to challenge collections of Kahani, Queen, Marry Kom. The question here is, since all the above films had better star cast as compared Neerja but still all this is happening? Isn’t it a lesson for such makers who’r still bent upon to sign so called biggest stars of millenium blah blah? And also shameful for those stars as well as the bloggers who defend such products as “NICHE FILMS” after their failure. How nice or would be if those makers focus on scripts like Neerja instead of those millenium jokers and provide some relief to paying public from that torture/ Circus.

      • For small and experimental films, a lot depends on timing, subject of the movie and awareness as well. And even more, how much engaging/entertaining the film is. Neerja is incredibly engaging film which have both the emotional and heroic factor for the obvious reasons. A small and great film hardly does wonders at box office is they are slow. Btw Kangna was not the same star which she is now before the release of Queen. First week numbers of Kahaani and Queen were lower than Neerja’s. Mary Kom obviously is not even in the league of other three and was a lost opportunity to make a great movie of such a national icon.

  17. Says a source working on the project, “There are several instances of real brothers acting together, but not as villians. Both Rohit and Ronit playing negative roles in the same film will be a first. While Ronit has played characters with grey streaks earlier (most recent being in films like Guddu Rangeela and Boss), it will be a complete transformation for Rohit since he will have to shed his good-guy image.”

Rohit confirms the story, adding, “It is a matter of great pride to be part of Kaabil, but Ronit’s and my presence in the film is secondary; the combination of Rakesh Roshan and Sanjay Gupta will be lethal. And look at the vehicle they have got to translate their vision on screen!”

The Roy brothers shared screen space in telly political drama Sarrkar (2005) in which their characters were loosely based on Rajiv and Sanjay Gandhi’s lives.
