    FAN – April 15, 2016
    Raees – July 3, 2016.

3 SRK releases in 7-8 months. Kinda rare for a big star these days unless your Akshay Kumar.

    • well of course that angle is quite often there with him! Here it’s the Darr kind of paradigm (the psychotic figure) marries to the ‘I am the king’ one. A talented director could do something interesting with this conceit. So you have SRK’s ‘original’ self now obsessed with his ‘great star’ one. But also there’s a certain desire that this sort of thing also betrays and it’s again one he’s had for very long. To be a true-blue mass star. And this continues to evade him because he’s never been in that mould. He keeps returning to it with Don or Raees or whatever, a kind of masala history (which of course every authentic mass star must have). He’d probably love to be Salman today (in modified form). And so this sort of film which those initial shits really suggest not just a very successful star but a mass star. The problem as always is: you can’t just assert this. Aamir for instance has also never been a mass star. On the odd occasion (ghajini) he might get that audience but he doesn’t have that signature. There really are no mass stars in Bombay today except for Salman or at the most Akshay some years back when he was doing far better (though even he never truly graduated to masala when he really needed to..).

Yeah, no wonder he signed FAN and Raees back to back to compete with Kick and Dabangg.

        • I don’t think he’s not doing Kick or something because of higher aesthetic values! How do I know? He’s on his second film with Rohit Shetty!

On the rest of course you can get real life montages like that for any star. It’s always about how these things are ‘framed’ within a film.

          Like

        • Certainly he’s not doing the southern remakes like Kick, Jai Ho and he never going to do it. Rohit Shetty’s CE was unlike his other films.. it was almost an SRK movie template with love story and Rohit Shetty has never done a love story before. If one can take some director and fit in his scheme of work, I don’t think anyone would really reject it.

        • I think when one does HNY one can claim absolutely no higher ‘moral’ ground. On the other hand ETT was certainly much more refined than the usual Salman stuff (though I found it flat). By the way I don’t disagree that SRK cannot do some of this stuff even as a personal choice but that’s because even he knows he cannot sell that sort of stuff to his base. But he’s sticking with Rohit Shetty. Sure a successful director will always work around the star’s image. There’s nothing odd about this. When he did BB he went on a ‘Bachchan’ overdose (including the title). That doesn’t mean it wasn’t Rohit Shetty film. Singham too wasn’t a regular Shetty film in that sense.

The idea that any star can do anything is one I’d always reject anyway. The biggest stars are even more limited sometimes because they are that much more tied to an image. And in any case I wasn’t saying it was SRK’s dream to do Ready. Just that he had mass star aspirations and Salman was the model of that in the current age. One could be a mass star with more sensible (Ghajini) films as well. SRK tries to split the difference between his multiplex base and his masala ambitions when he attempts one of these things. When it goes well he gets OSO, otherwise it’s HNY. But either way it’s not as if there is some aesthetic superiority either way. When you fast-track Dilwale after HNY doesn’t live upto expectations, when you delay your more ‘meaningful’ films for this (irrespective of whatever spiel is dished out in the media.. not just SRK.. what star admits to anything?!), when you try the ultimate nostalgia deal with a director who’s already delivering hits one after the other.. after all this the idea that there is some great model of sincerity behind this which would then foreclose a Salman sort of deal seems a stretch. But again all stars nonetheless make choices. Successful or not if there’s even minimal choice involved stars will do certain kinds of things rather than others.

Yes but as opposed to who? everyone else here who really ‘gets’ things based on media interviews and the lot?! As far as I can tell for the most part when people have favorite stars they endorse all their choices or give them the benefit of the doubt on everything including their cereal choices. Even when a star runs down someone on the sidewalk his fans are quite happy to see him as the victim.

  8. Great teaser. Easily, the most interesting film on the horizon, among films whose trailers, teasers or stulls have been shown. With Habib Faisal and Maneesh Sharma at the creative helm, it could turn out to be a wonderful film.

    Like

    • This isn’t a bad teaser given the films story (or what I think is the films story which is most probably going to be about an obsessed fan of some sort and him trying to meet his hero and all the issues with that). It would be interesting to see Shahrukh Khan play a fan of himself rather than the characitures he has been sleep walking through in HNY and Chennai Express. I reckon Maneesh Sharma and Habib Faisal can handle a film like this well.
I would be interested to see this film to see what the actual story is and to see how Shahrukh Khan handles playing a (what i hope is) a fleshed out character (also if he is a fan, he would be young in age, again it would be interesting to see SRK essay a role of someone alot younger than his real age). If you look at his performances in Swades, CDI and some parts in MNIK/RNBDJ, you can see that he is a genuine actor, what surprises me is that he doesn’t go for more challenging films in terms of his performance, he has the scope to handle it (which is not the case for some of his contemporaries). I reckon he suffers from a lack of script sense, he doesn’t choose films based on the performance required but more on box office potential! I get it, he is a mainstream actor and he feels the need to keep up with his contemporaries in terms of box office results, but theres nothing to stop him from doing a good film (which from outset looks like it has less box office potential, but if the film works at the bo it can still go on fo be a huge grosser) with more challenging roles. I would like to think Fan and Raees are a step in that direction from SRK.

I can understand Dilwale, thats just another brash SRK larger than life mass potboiler, been there…done that, I probably won’t even watch it unless I hear its really entertaining or Shetty has outdone himself. From the looks of it though, Fan and Raees look like something different where he might deliver something non-SRK, fof thosr reasons I’m interested.

      • I think people tend to ignore that not everyone out there has the same ambitions in life. All the Khan are in the positions they do projects which they really want to do and spend time with that team. Aamir’s criteria is simple – to pick the BEST script he’s heard and he gets most excited. Salman’s current criteria is to pick a project which helps his super-stardom and doesn’t disappoint his fan following and huge money spinner. If SRK had ambition to prove his acting versatility then his path and script selection criteria will be different. Srk’s problem is that he is averse to working with folks outside his comfort zone, however the great script. If you want to sign him in ‘different’ film, you still have to go in with his close circle of people or folks he already is open to. If tomorrow Nitesh Tiwari offers him Dangal kind of movie, Srk won’t do it for simple reason he won’t spend time with some unknown folks for 6 months. Be it Swades, Chak De India or even MNIK, Fan, Raees are different films but it still comes with his inner circle of friends (Aditya Chopra, Farhan Akhtar).

        • Fair point, but he went outside his camp with Rohit Shetty though. In fact he went into another camp to get him!
Perhaps he needs to change that mantra, because the directors in his ‘camp’ are not the top directors of today. Kjo, Adi Chopra, Farah Khan might be well known names but that doesn’t mean they are good directors, Kjo and Farah are terrible film makers and Adi Chopra is just average, DDLJ was his only peak. Farhan Akhtars Dil Chata Hai was good and had he not gone into acting he might have been staking a claim to being a top notch director today!
SRK as he stands is a massive star, the box office openings his films take prove that, I just think he is a much better actor then most of his films suggest, and script selection has alot to do with that, an actor is only as good as his script is something ive heard again and again, its true in many ways. Most of his films in the past 5-6 years have been poor content wise, no real longevity in any of them and again it comes down to poor script selection. He has had the opportunity to star in some big films (in hindsight i know) like 3 idiots and Robot (which was miles better than SRKs attempt in Ra1 imo), his mantra clearly let him down there. There was also talks of him doing a film with Vishal Bhardwaj at some point, I was interested in that too, but that never materialised. I think SRk himself has interest in doing these deifferent films, but as the film is about to roll, one of the directors in his camp offers him a film which he feels obliged to do (why? Don’t know), so in many ways his camp is his weakness.

  11. I will agree to Rajen’s comment that the teaser is not substantial.

Also my greatest worry with SRK is not his choice of scripts, but what he chooses to do with it. If one takes the last 20 movies of SRK they have been diverse enough but barring few movies, SRK hasnt been able to make enough of his character as he somehow ‘forgets’ to act or in some cases opts not to act. Just turning up to a set doesnt constitute acting. Now I get it that SRK is not the kind who will practice for hours to get into a character, but even basic effort in acting is missing. And this is sad because when he puts his mind into it, he is a wonderful actor as can be seen from Baazigar, Darr, CDI, Swades and even in these movies where he doesnt show up, you can still make out that in some scenes he is superb and in others he doesnt care. HNY for example, I dont think he bothered to act in even a single scene. He just thought, he will show up and the circus will take it to box office records…It doesnt work that way and it wont work that way specially in movies like Raees and Fan where the character is very important. So he better shape up for this role. Because an obsessive streak to this FAN character can easily be construed as hamming if he doesnt get it right…and the swagger of a drug lord in Raees can again play out like that stupid ‘I am great, I know everything’ sort of role he did in Don 2.
IMO SRK works best if the director keeps him on a leash. If you let him loose you will not get anything significant from SRK.

    • agree with most of this… I’d just say that when a star has played star for very long it’s hard to recover the actor. In other words if the turn isn’t made at the right time or if the right balance isn’t found it becomes hard. Because you lose those instincts. With SRK not doing ‘acting’ roles might have been a lesser problem though. The bigger issue with him is that on his signature roles he became stale very quickly. There are star who do genre stuff but with far more freshness for a much longer time.

      Like

      • Stale? Some folks on here don’t like that and keep repeating it became stale. After years he did CE in his trademark style and you can see the results. Whenever SRK does a proper commercial Rahul type of role and that movie flops, we can agree that his strength has become stale. Underperformance of Ra.One and comparatively HNY far away from his trademark style doesn’t prove his romantic image has died down.

        Like

        • Actually SRK has become stale in his romantic avatar but only primarily in the YRF and KJO world of romance. I will be very interested if Imitaz Ali or Anand Rai directs him in a romantic movie. And away from the YRF’s chocolate romance, he still feels fresh in a CE kind of setting. I hated the movie but if there is anything I liked its the romance between SRK and DP. So a lot of the staleness vibe has got to do with how the directors are using him. We use the term directors actor frequently, IMO SRK is a classic directors actor. Keep him on a leash and he can still do magic.

Exactly! In theory SRK has the skills to explore and illuminate the relationship between fan and celebrity and say something substantive about the costs and benefits to each, but he’s not going to. Why do I say that? Because of his history. At every point in his career since he’s had the luxury of choice, he’s deliberately and consciously made the “easier” creative choices in terms of his performance. SRK maybe capable of a creative reinvention, but I don’t he has the will, the sincerity or the courage to actually affect one. Frankly, I don’t think he’s even interested in a creative reinvention, just a commercial one.

    • I think theres more to it than that. In any case Billu was just a ‘SRK on an ego trip’ sort of film, in that film he just appeared doing starry like things and then leapfroged to the end to deliver some emotional quoitent. In this one I think theres alot more to it where Maneesh Sharma has ‘reined him in’ so to speak. We could be in for a treat here if Maneesh Sharma pull something good out of the box. The box office fate will depend on the WOM in any case, there is nothing to suggest that this film is front loaded.

It seems somehow all the brilliance just vanishes with age and we get treated with their counterfeit versions and this has been universal whether it is a more melodramatic Dilip Kumar, play acting Amitabh Bachchan , hammy Rajesh Khanna, shammy SRK or a theatrical Kamal Haasan .

Bachchan can’t stand in front of Dalip Kumar if one uses any yardstick. Dalip Kumar left the industry in a graceful manner whereas, in present scenario Bachchan can sign a film if one offers a cup of tea to him. He tried to take credit of success of Piku for himself but Dee pika smelled the coffee and dropped him from the guest list of Piku’s success bash.

Of these, only Nishabd, Eklavya, Virudh and Dev rate as flops. And there were fine performances by Bachan in these movies, irrespective of one being a Bachan fan or not.

Sure, Bachan has had other flops that aren’t included in the list but at times he has experimented and at other times, he has made poor choices. But surely, discarding the above list as being complete disasters and disregarding the fine performances removes most of the credibility of any argument one would trying to make.

  28. must say he looks sick here… I understand he’s playing the part of a younger fan but can’t imagine anyone for whom this look works.. overdoing the ‘fan’ in this sense because one has the guarantee of a normal older star also in the same film is nonetheless a problem because the ‘fan’ will probably have more of the film to himself than the actual star. Also what’s the real ‘story’ of such a venture? A star offers homage to himself or asserts it in this sense but also then plays a younger self without guilt, something he couldn’t otherwise do for obvious reasons. It will have to be quite a narrative to pull off all of this. Why? Because this sort of thing works much better when the star is at his peak. In other words it requires a certain investment by the audience in that basic conceit. Doesn’t work in the same way after the event. And for the same reason playing that sort of younger self also doesn’t fly even if there is a ‘reason’ here. Now it’s certainly the case that a very convincing narrative can make a film acceptable despite all these problems. But does one wish to bet on this?

Most silliest commentary. Not having the biggest hit of the year for years doesn’t mean there is drastic loss of stardom. Moreover its Aamir and Salman having better hits but its not like there is a difference between these 3 as stars and one thinks two as superstar and not the other one. I don’t think there is huge effect between SRK’s stardom during Chak De, OSO in 2007 or during Chennai Express or HNY, its more or less around the same level and movies can be good or bad. The movies are getting weaker but its not like he suddenly stops being a superstar and can’t have crazy fans as the film suggest. There is no ‘after the event’ stage here.. SRK is still a superstar, its not like he’s now like Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol who are way past their prime stardom and are catering to different set of audience who can’t fathom to imagine them as superstar with crazy fan. If you think that, it’s simply your imagination!

    • “…because there has to be something beyond the novelty factor of looks and makeup.”

That’s precisely the point that they wanted to get away with the discussion of the makeup and looks and revealed the look 6 months prior to the release. They don’t want it to be novel anymore by the time movie releases and want it to be just 2 separate characters in the movie as the movie will surely be depending on the script. If they had a weak script, they would have capitalized more on the look and kept it a secret till later date.

For instance one can say the things Trump does and if criticized one can respond with ‘you don’t want to hear all kinds of views, you want to silence me’! In India too this regularly happens. Extremists pretend they’re saying reasonable things. Of course in a democracy all of this should still be tolerated. But every club in a democracy can still have its own rules. That’s why they revealed the look 6 months prior to the release. They just got away from the younger look talk and introducing Gaurav. They had 2 promos earlier but its just the background and still it doesn’t prepare for the theatrical trailer which is still going to shock lot of them considering they thought it would be something like Billu and sweet romantic Fan story meeting his idol. I must say, its very smart and planned marketing and prepared everyone for the theatrical trailer 1.5 months before the movie for its exact purpose i.e, of a film. Everyone also thought why isn’t he playing SRK.. yeah coz he’s also acing major role as the superstar and not a special appearance or no role as lot of them believed.

The movie isn’t about a fan of SRK, it’s about a Fan of Aryan Khanna. Of course, they were smart on picking somebody who has been in business for over 20 years so you have actual footage for past 20+ years.

    • First off saying this sort of stuff in advance is a way of addressing certain anxieties that one might have anyway! In other words one addresses the anxiety by attributing it to someone else. Now of course I have said some of these things about this film and other films he’s done. But safe to say that the film’s fate or even whether SRK is liked in it or not hardly depends on what I or anyone else says here! I have always been on this or any other matter a ‘cultural critic’ if you like. I’ve been interested in films as ‘symptom’ of society or national space and so on. But to be a serious analyst (or for such an attempt to be serious) in any sense one cannot be so childish as to keep running down a star just because one might not like him. In the same sense there has to be a certain integrity to these things. My ‘politics’ if you will remains the same irrespective of the star. If I had said about a SRK film what I did recently about Airlift (in terms of its politics) I would have been attacked for being anti-SRK (to add to that longer ‘cultural’ comment I saw the film recently and find it grossly overrated.. just at a pure narrative level.. I think Baby was way superior to it and I wasn’t a huge Baby fan either.. again not talking politics now.. just pure narrative.. similarly Neerja too was way better but even this isn’t anything extraordinary… but we’re going through a phase now where certain kinds of subjects are being routinely overrated). Put differently whether I am for or against a star makes no difference when I’m ‘analyzing’ things. This is an important distinction. Now of course I can’t force anyone to believe me on this point but then it doesn’t particularly bother me whether they do or not!

Having said that, this is a good trailer. Holds a lot of promise in the sense that this might be a nail-biting film.

The seed, however, seems to be for sure planted from here as I had pointed out/guessed earlier; now one can confirm.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fan_(1996_film)

Going back to the point somebody made earlier – maybe Satyam — this would have been the one with a stronger impact if it were released sometime during 2007, 2008 or 09 when SRK had OSO and CDI. It would have really added to the port-folio and perhaps set him to greater heights then the heights he was at that time. Not that it will not work now. It is just that time-line wise, maybe it would have made much sense earlier..

The job is done if this turns out to be a gripping film..with thrills galore..

        • An Jo, calm down, wasn’t trying to pin you down. Just asked a simple question based on your statement.

The novel factor here is real time SRK footage used for Aryan Khanna character and the fan (Gaurav) looking like Aryan Khanna (both played by SRK with one being about 20 years older than the other).

I don’t think any of the movies you’ve named so far has this factor.

Maybe it’s inspired by Rajesh Khannas Sachaa Jutha?

          Like

        • Please don’t tell me to calm down. That was not a simple question you asked. It was ridiculous actually and with an ulterior motive. You were insinuating that just because I said FAN might be inspired from THE FAN, then should one assume that THE FAN (1996) is inspired from DARR (1992/1993) based of the time-line?

How on earth can THE FAN be a copy of DARR? You know the answer very well..and yet..

I haven’t seen SACCHA JHOOTHA, so don’t know about whether it could be inspired from that..[I am writing this if you sincerely meant the question]

          Like

        • Forgot about bachhan fans thinking every srk fan is ridiculous and with an ulterior motive.

I don’t play games like most fans do here, I don’t come here to put other actors down, etc…(I do put down bachhan everytime one of bachhan fan tries to make a statement that bachhan is somewhat relevant to boxoffice currently, and I mean any bachhan)

And yes, i think it’s more in line with Sachaa Jutha in sense that the one is living anothers life, commiting crime so the other gets blames, etc….

But comparison to 1996 The Fan is ridiculous unless you tell me that Deniro played double role and is transforming himself to look like another character in that film, etc…

But I do give you that maybe the title is inspired by the 1996 The Fan 🙂

          Like

        • Yes it is ridiculous or/and with an ulterior motive. If not, then there can be only 1 reason for your statement, and I wouldn’t want to spell it out. You know it.

How on God’s parched earth can THE FAN be copied from DARR? What’s the ratio of Hollywood films ‘copying’ Bollywood? So how can one even ask the question? The question is so –well, to put it kindly — naive, that it is impossible to believe that anybody who follows SRK’s life and his movies on a day-to-day basis can even ask this. And that’s why I felt that it was surely an insincere question.

Coming to another ridiculous thing: that FAN CANNOT be compared to THE FAN at all unless De Niro is both the player and the fan. Really? Such superficial comparison? I said the ‘seed’/premise of a fan’s obsession is taken from THE FAN. Not that it is wholly copied or ripped-off. [By the way, your compatriot also seems to agree with the similarities..]

Oh and why did Amitabh and/or his fans come into the picture here? And who is putting down what? Anything I said about Amitabh ANYWHERE in my comments? Reveals…

If this is going to be the level of touchiness and discourse, well, I better stay out of FAN threads for the next 2 months until FAN completes it’s life-cycle and the quarterly financial results are out..

Just for everyone, this is the 1st movie in world to have such long VFX on someone’s facial capture. This technology has been introduced in Hollywood but they have used it for 10 mins max in any film and FAN is the first film to use it full fledged. Besides that the VFX is completely done by Red Chillies in India nothing in US or outside which is still an achievement.
