  1. It’s an intriguing journey that Manish Sharma weaves, but one that, unfortunately, doesn’t end well.

  2. RATING: 2.5 stars
Shah Rukh Khan in a song-less, romance-less, heroine-less movie directed by the poet of middle-class Maneesh Sharma seems like a perfect recipe for a hatke film. I watched the film in happy anticipation and enjoyed it too. The first 30 minutes at least.

Fan is implausible, unreasonable and unconvincing. And RJs don’t EVER speak the way they do in Hindi films, even if they are presenters in London. Argh.

  3. The action scenes towards the climax are long, but well-executed. Watch this if you are a die-hard fan of Khan, but don’t expect an unpredictable thriller. The key here is to manage your expectations and you will walk home smiling at having seen an engaging drama about a stupid fan and a faultless superstar.

    Film: Fan

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan in a double role

Shah Rukh Khan to ask Karan Johar for Diwali slot for Raees?

Now that Shah Rukh Khan has very sensibly and gracefully decided to move out of the Eid release slot for his Raees, efforts are on to seek and find a suitable Friday in the post-Eid weeks.

Sources claimed that producer Ritesh Sidhwani and Shah Rukh were looking at pitching Raees against either Rohit Dhawan’s Dishoom on 29 July or Mohenjo Daro on 12 August.

However, it is now learnt that Raees won’t take on either of the two films, as they are seen to be tough competition. Instead Shah Rukh Khan will go with Raees to his traditional release slot, Diwali.

Says a source, “They are planning to release Raees for Diwali. There are two films scheduled for Diwali Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay and Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Shah Rukh is likely to ask Karan Johar to move his film to another slot.”

  8. What initially is an engaging, (even if a little pompous and self indulgent) thriller at its onset, spectacularly tumbles like a block of un-cemented bricks in its third act, despite a strong performance from Khan after what seems like an eternity.

As a film, Fan isn’t entirely that original. Placing your idol on a pedestal and behaving like a man possessed for their validation is a theme that’s been explored on celluloid countless times before. Robert De Niro was obsessed with Wesley Snipes’ stellar baseball player in the 90s thriller, co-incidentally also titled The Fan. Similarly, in the late 90s, a small town, baby faced Aftab Shivdasani was besotted with Urmila Matondkar’s out of reach, mercurial movie star in Ram Gopal Varma’s somewhat autobiographical Mast (Varma always admitted to being besotted with Sridevi), and heck, even Khan himself, has played the obsessed psychotic in many a film, notable among them being Yash Chopra’s Darr or Rahul Rawail’s Anjaam, both of which if you grew up in the 90s, get their nudge nudge wink odes here.

  9. Fan Has Very Good Start

Fan has a very good start at most places registering around 45-50% occupancy on average at multiplexes. The morning occupancy are lower than Dilwale but the film has far more screenings than that film and with the added advantage of a holiday, the multiplex business should easily surpass the Dilwale multiplex business.

The opening in mass centres is average but that is expected as the film is devoid of music and certain other commercial angles. Even here though Dilwale had all this, it was hugely affected by the intolerance angle at that time and mass centres could not collect as they should have.

The last real opening was Dilwale four months back and its taken another Shahrukh Khan film to get the initials going. In between that time only two Hollywood releases Batman v Superman and The Jungle book took an opening and both were dubbed films. The best opening has been the multiplexes of West Bengal followed by Pune.

The key for Fan will be that the presence of Shahrukh Khan and holiday factor will enable mass centres to good to decent collections on day one and then can these places sustain as the film has no music and the thriller genre which does not work well in many circuits. If the likes of Gujarat, CPCI work the film will be unstoppable.

  10. The Jungle Book Crushes Neerja And Kapoor & Sons In One Week

    http://www.boxofficeindia.com/art_detail.php?articalid=1954#.VxCJa5x97q4

The Jungle Book has had an excellent first week of 73.50 crore nett with the collections on Thursday being better than day one and it was not as if day one was poor. It was a partial holiday on Thursday which pushed the collections to around 11 crore nett mark.

Basically the film has crushed the collections of films like Neerja and Kapoor & Sons in just one week. These Hindi films are hit films as they were well budgeted and liked by a small segment of the crowd. Its a different story in the media where its been said these films were loved and hugely appreciated but if thats the case what words are there to describe The Jungle Book which has genuinely been liked by audiences across the nation

There screen counts are comparable as well with The Jungle Book was released on 1500 screens which is same as Kapoor & Sons while Neerja was 1000 plus but got a bigger advantage of tax free so early in its run.

The Jungle Book has smashed records of all Hollywood films in India and is cruising to be the first Hollywood release to cross 100 crore nett and be the highest grossing Hollywood release ever in India. There is Shahrukh Khan’s fan releasing today which will affect collections no doubt but there is enough appreciation there for The Jungle Book to continue to collect well over the next few weeks.

What’s Good: Shah Rukh Khan finally offers something great on the acting front. His distinct characters of Gaurav and Aryan are impressive.

What’s Bad: The outrageously flawed script. This logic-defying drama is cringeworthy in the second half.

Loo Break: Sometime in the Second half would be a good.

Watch or Not?: Watch if you are a true SRK fan because after a long time he performs on-screen as an actor. If you were looking for a thriller then this will disappoint.

  14. Even the reviewers who have history to be die hard srkian are saying same thing.

“Fan succumbs badly to the second-half syndrome and that is its undoing. It’s almost like the first and the second half are two different films. Sharma (who has also written the film) leads towards a problem very well in the pre-intermission part. But after that, he goes awry when he illustrates it further. Even the obsession in Darr (from where Fan is inspired) seems far too real to what Sharma has conveyed. Everything in the second half is unbelievable – a middle-class Delhi boy travelling to foreign countries and getting the better of a reigning Bollywood superstar should have at least been handled better. Long, drawn-out action scenes will have you squirming in your seat. Aryan’s character suddenly becomes more of a caricature. The climax is exhausting and the film ends on a low, which is sad. You also miss the support of other fine actors after a point – Mahira Khan and Waluscha D’Souza really have nothing to offer.”

    WHAT TO DO:
Fan is a not a great film, it is a brave film. Watch it still for Shah Rukh Khan’s outstanding portrayal (an extra star only for him).

SRK is very good and his Gaurav’s act as an obsessed of a superstar is brilliant. He is a bit retrained in his act of Aaryan Khanna.
There is no other decent role in the movie. It’s an out and out SRK movie.
First half is about Gaurav and his encounter with his star. It keeps you entertained. 3.5/5
Second half is absolutely unbelievable piece of mediocre screenplay till the climax which again lifts the movie but not much. 2/5

  16. Back from FAN. SRK’s best since Chak De! Forget SRK, this kind of movie is a dream for any actor and SRK is lucky to get it and he nailed it to the T. There is not an iota of hint of VFX anywhere even when 2 roles are fighting/chasing etc which is remarkable feat. The 2nd half tone will restrict the repeat viewing but there is no doubt in my mind, it will do well eventually. Also aside boxoffice this will be a feather in SRK’s cap and his CV. So, even with good critical acclaim even 150 to 200 crores will be remembered!

Ki & Ka (ongoing), the rest of the box office

All 1 needs to see in the trailer is the sequence wherein the “fan” encounters the “star” for the first time. The plethora of emotions conjured by srk at his age after the success he achieved answers the question “can he act?” Once again..
U know, acting is difficult and effective acting is even more so.
But even more difficult is stylised acting that builds LAYERS around a simple premise to make even a simple act look ex(r)otic…
I’ve seen only that one promo but SRKs is a class act here

          http://www.bethlovesbollywood.com/2016/04/cause-i-can-play-part-so-well-fan.html

” Fan could only work with Shahrukh, his career of smart(-ass) interviews, self-aware persona, and massy films that experiment with assumed character types. He is a virtuoso in the film, essentially a two-hour schizophrenic monologue. While some of the investigation into the relationship between fan and star feels unfinished or superficial, watching him sustain and aggravate the differences in two contrasting characters is a joy. I can’t think of a more complicated or interesting double role anywhere in Hindi cinema, let alone one linked so thoughtfully with exploration of identity, facades, access, and self-knowledge (with which I think the film is more concerned than the relationship between fan and star). Obviously the film has commentary on Shahrukh’s own life, but it has some on the industry as well. Gone are the worries of separated brothers: two disparate people who have an inarguable reason to be alike feels like such a simplistic problem now. Families and homelands are now replaced by the panic of deliberate duplication and infinite replaceability. For an actor who has played with lookalikes so much and so significantly in his career, this must have been such a treat to do.
Shahrukh is never better than in characters who are gray or even fully dark, and some of the best of those performances are with Yash Raj Films (Chak De India, Darr). Fan builds beautifully on those traditions. Shady Shahrukh is my favorite Shahrukh, and this film gives us two (or maybe even three, depending on how one reads the final scene outside Mannat)? Thrillingly, the only romances in Fan are with personas—isn’t it so harrowingly now, moving on from man vs man to man vs self to man vs celebrity? As much as I appreciate a good romance, this is so much more interesting and also a nice change from his recent overall blahness and missteps in that category (plus avoids creepy uncle territory, since everything here is just plain creepy). Fan is also an important experiment for an aging star and for his aging public: what do we do with these monsters we’ve created? Will we suffocate them—or they us? ”

  21. Fan has a recorded a good first day of around 20 crore nett as per early estimates. The film has done very well in North India beating the figures of Dilwale and Mumbai should also beat as Mumbai city and especially Pune had opened well in the morning. The figures in East India and Nizam are likely to come in below Dilwale and it could be quite a margin as there is a big single screen presence in these circuits .

The film has behaved best in the premium multiplexes that is why the big circuits are best but as Shahrukh Khan is there in the film the others areas have also managed to collect and for a film of this type the collections are good. It has also been helped by a partial holiday in places.

The film has done well on opening day but the key is what happens from here on as the film has notched up a 20 crore nett apprx figure which is very high for a film of this type so will it be able to sustain at these levels especially at mass centres.

The best that a film, broadly in the same terrain, has done is the130 cr by Airlift. So if this does 150 cr it would prove that the supestar Shahrukh Khan has not gone anywhere. If it does 130 cr it would still be a good achievement and make the film a hit. As of now, judging by the reactions from different quarters, one thing is certain, Sahrukh’s performance is drawing unqulaified applause. • Hey All… My first post here 😇.. A big movie buff. Good to have a forum like this for discussing movies..

Just came back after watching Fan. My two cents.

This is totally a new territory for SRK. No songs, no romance, dark undercurrents, no feel good ness. This movie basically offers nothing for his regular audience, so I don’t this will have legs, we might be looking at a fairly short stint here.

Having said that I simply loved the movie. Everyone is grey here, we are not playing the black and white game in this movie and that makes it so real. This movie got me thinking, about hero worship, our ideals and most importantly the state that we are in today. Engrossing and relevant to the T, this movie has been made maybe to just prove a point.

Having said that the second half should have been shorter. The chase scenes could have been axed. That would have made this a 5 star movie.

The scene where Aryan does a press conference and just stops short of saying that whatever he is, is because of his fans is awesome.

This is without doubt one of SRK’s better performances.

      My Rating : 4.5

Screen legend Dilip Kumar was taken to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital on April 16 after complaining of respiratory problems. The 93-year-old actor has now been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit or ICU but is being closely monitored because of his age. Dilip saab has been in and out of hospital over the last two years.

“The next 72 hours are crucial. He is under observation. We are keeping a close watch. He might have to be shifted to the ICU. It takes time for a patient to respond to the treatment in the same way as it takes three hours for the food to digest.” Dr Jalil Parkar told news agencies.

  28. The Jungle Book continued to smash records on the eighth day with collections around 7.50-7.75 crore nett which is just 25% less than day one and there was a big film like Fan released. The film will probably become the highest grossing Hollywood release in India in just two weeks.

The business of the film now is around 81 crore nett in eight days and in some of the mass centres, the collections on day eight were better than the first day. Even a circuit like East Punjab dominated by multiplexes collected better on day eight than the first day.

The eighth day collections are the best of year and the way the film is going it could be the highest grossing film of the year beating the Hindi films. Airlift grossed 123 crore nett and The Jungle Book could beat that though obviously Fan has been released this week and that could also beat the Airlift figure.

The CGI—which encompasses not only all of these characters, but the entire cinematic environment as well—is a modest revelation, once again extending the boundaries of the possible. (It’s a development about which I continue to have mixed feelings.) And as for virtually the sole human being in the middle of all this technological splendor, newcomer Neel Sethi is good if not exactly indelible as Mowgli. Perhaps inevitably for a boy inhabiting a universe that will be largely conjured around him after the fact, Sethi offers a performance that is less acting than embodiment—but he embodies Mowgli impeccably, right down to the floppy haircut and the red swaddle-diaper.

Will this film win an Oscar?

His last film, ‘Bang Bang’ (2014), didn’t really create ripples in the box office and now he needs to be extra careful with his choices if he has to find his foothold back in the industry. ‘Mohenjo Daro’, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, is slated to release on August 12.

    Watched Fan

I think it is a very sincere at creating masala but the problem lies in what it wants to be – just an entertainer or a revolutionising idea. While the first half runs smoothly and is a delight with its feet dipped in groundedness (despite a couple of ludicrously implausible scenes, like the fan beating the shit out of major star – like there’s no security around), the second half takes the word “disbelief” to a whole new level.

Fan is never boring, though. It is fairly engrossing till the end, has a fantastic SRK with his revived, manic energy, and boasts of great dialogue and a good screenplay, but the implausibility ruins it. Which is a shame, because it doesn’t make one identify or care much for either Gaurav or Aryan.
That’s why I feel slightly bad for SRK. Its his performance alone which lifts the film.

But all said and done, its an experiment that needs to be appreciated. Even if it doesn’t work, its better to see SRK fail at something like this than having modest success with his recent 150-200 crore gross films who h are plain bad.

Fan had a good second day with collections of around 16.75 crore nett. There will be a drop of 10-15% on day two but that was inevitable as day one was a holiday at most places. The film probably benefited around 20-25% on day one due to the holiday. It was not a national holiday which normally gives advantage of 50% plus.

The issue for Fan is that places like Gujarat, Rajasthan, CP Berar opened well enough due to Shahrukh Khan but as not as strong as other places they had chances to hold. These places have fallen to lower levels on Saturday leaving Fan to be a big city film only.

The big cities have managed strong collections again on Saturday giving it a big number for this type of film. It will be Monday that will decide is that are these sort of numbers mainly due to Shahrukh Khan or does it actually have someting at least for the big cities.

        Projected BOI reporting for Saturday
        Fan has a good Saturday
Fan witnessed a drop of about 15%!( will be revised to 20 in a day or two) on Saturday which is not unexpected and is a normal (??) Saturday drop as it was a working day and because the masses came out on Friday. It is still a very good number for a movie without songs and a ‘niche’ movie.
Sunday should be a little higher and overall this will still be the biggest opening weekend for 2016. The word of mouth is so-so and whatever the movie is making is purely on the strength of SRK’s star power. Monday will determine the fate of the movie.

FAN hasn’t performed upto expectations on Day 2 at the box office. As per early estimates, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer has collected around Rs 16.5 – 17 crore on Saturday.

The film is not holding up at smaller centres, with some of these centres registering falls in the range of 25 – 35% on Saturday. Multiplexes business was comparatively much better, but the big jump that ‘word-of-mouth’ films show on Saturday was clearly missing.

Akshay Kumar’s Airlift has shown phenomenal growth on Day 2 at the domestic box office. Like we reported in our box office report yesterday, the morning shows on Saturday were up by around 10% and the upward trend continued through the day.

Cities are performing very well and even mass centres performed better on Saturday as compared to Friday. The word-of-mouth is excellent, which should help the film take advantage of two holidays – one on Sunday and other for Republic Day on Tuesday.

Sunday Update: As expected, morning shows on Sunday are better than both Friday and Saturday. A film like Baby last year, showed growth of 40% on Sunday. Airlift is performing at a higher level, so growth of around 20% or more is a possibility. The film is now looking at weekend business of 43-44 crore and Monday should hold well too because Tuesday is national holiday.

The much hyped thriller movie Talaash which started off well on day 1, has shown a 12% increase on the 2nd day (day 2) at the box office collections.

Multiplexes did housefull business, while single screen theatres managed with an average result.

The Aamir Khan starrer movie Talaash, had a box office collection of approximately Rs. 13.05 Crores on day 1 domestically.

Positive word of mouth and the Aamir Khan craze have contributed to a decent beginning for Talaash box office collections.

The 2nd day box office collection for Talaash was about Rs. 16.37 Crores.

Trade analysts say that this could continue well for the first week, and possibly cross the Rs. 50 Crores mark by the first weekend. So far the two day collection has netted approximately Rs. 30 Crores.

        Parameters are –
        1. Last release gap – plays an important role when a star has not released his movie since a long time
        2. Holiday release – the second biggest factor in opening apart from genre
        3. Genre – the biggest factor

    Saturday – 15,50,00,000

    Total – 34,25,00,000

The film will manage the highest weekend of the year despite the drop in mass centres. The bigger issue is only support from urban areas and that makes a big number difficult in the long run.

“Since I was in 10th standard, I was quite sure that I’ll do something in films. Actually there was a neighbour of mine who would take me to a lot of movies. The original Tamil version of ‘Sadma’, named ‘Moondram Pirai’, tremendously influenced me,” Balki told IANS.

“I feel that it is the most brilliant film made in India, because I had never seen the pain and love story as shown in the film. As soon as I watched it, I thought that it (films) was a beautiful place to be in,” he added.

Balki, who has directed films like “Cheeni Kum”, “Paa”, “Shamitabh” and “Ki & Ka”, said that he watched “Moondram Pirai” 30 times.

“I watched ‘Moondram Pirai’ 30 times and have visited each location in Ooty where it has been shot, where the actors were seated and where they had gone for a walk… I was so influenced by the film, it was so deep,” he added.

Released in 1982, “Moondram Pirai” features actors Kamal Haasan and Sridevi. It won numerous awards including the National Award and its Hindi version comprised the same cast and was released a year later.

About his early years before making his foray in the film industry, Balki said: “I joined a film institute, but I didn’t like the atmosphere there, so I joined a computer engineering college nearby. It was interesting, but I was very bored, so I used to play a lot of cricket and watched a lot of movies.”

  54. Fan Puts Up A Big Worldwide Number
    Monday 18 April 2016 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Fan has put up a strong number Worldwide with GROSS collections set to be around 113-114 crore. This is easily the highest figure of the year beating the 78 crore of Airlift. In terms off all time collections it is the 11th highest ever and fourth highest for an Shahrukh Khan starrer.

More than being the 11th highest, the feat is to be among more commercially viable films. No film of this sort has ever even got close to 100 crore. The film is a little lower than films like Kick and Singham Returns but higer than the likes of Jai Ho and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

The highest ever worldwide opening weekend is still Dhoom 3 at 193 crore followed by Bajrangi Bhaijaan at 187 crore.

  55. I think BOI will be concentrating on the overseas numbers henceforth to save face.

And even there, SRK’s movies usually do better. Right now, it is on par with Jai Ho and Singham Returns there and BOI are calling it huge.

Their Saturday numbers are even higher than producers! Usually their numbers are 10-15% lower than producers’.

80cr first week is a big ask now. I think it will wrap up around the 100-110cr mark at best. Under-performer domestically. Maybe a hit overseas. Same story as MNIK, JBHJ, KANK and Dilwale. However, it will take a decade for most of the media to admit that. For the time being they will make you believe it’s a hit or even a blockbuster.

  57. I am an avid follower here, never really comment but do read a lot. Some observations on FAN and SRK:
People here thrashed SRK for doing crap movies like HNY,Dilwale etc etc, saying he should rise above BO and do good content. But now, when he has singlehandedly pulled off a songless non-masala movie to a 50 cr+ net weekend the same people are calling it a flop?
Is there any other star who has done a movie like FAN (thriller,no songs no heroines) to be compared with SRK? Talaash may be an answer but then it had hit music and two heroines. Plus it crashed to 90 cr only which this movie will easliy surpass.
The way I see it, FAN is a huge success for the kind of movie it is, no way it could have ever done above 150..since the reviews are mixed (2nd half acceptence is low) 110-115 is a very reasonable outcome.
I hope more people see it, it trends better and TV ratings are good eventually. Otherwise, the audience is to blame if SRK picks the next RS or Farah Khan movie.. because cleary they seem to work more in numbers

    • Very apt comment..I also have been a regular reader at this site..and i have seen how so many of the connoisseurs of good cinema were advocating better movie choices to SRK..

and the extent he has gone off mainstream with fan..is the extreme most any huge star can go..and no, nobody of the other khan duo has demonstrated such a departure before. this year Akshay kumar has done an ‘Airlift’ but that movie was high on patriotism, which is the ‘in thing’ now..and released at the time of Republic day which helped a lot.

The best opening of the year so far, the best opening in such a non mainstream genre movie and the best weekend also..not bad for the first hatke attempt in some years now for him..isnt it?

Now its interesting when ppl say SRK hasnt been on top since a decade..which means he was there before that..and considering the other two khans were around even before him, what it implies is that they took like ten years or more to catch up to him..?

Now after a decade of being on par with the other two..more or less, SRK is moving away from obvious popular choices with purpose, if you look at his coming up projects.. fan is a beginning, and he has done he can open this well even in this territory. Not his fault if the content didnt impress a lot of ppl out there. Different combinations of better cinema may come up..with more generous proportions of entertainment quotient..and we will see what happens..let this one be for those who said he cant act..!!

Reviewers were just too generous to see him in good role, many gave extra one or even two stars just for him. Many reviewers are his fan himself, otherwise early reviews were mixed. Raja sen gave 4.5 that was joke, anupama chopra gave 3.5 and she is self proclaimed srk fan.
Even die hard srkian wont like to give it repeat watch and what kind of good film it is. It is simply bad filmmakimg and Maneesh Sharma’s weekest film.

Fan had a good first weekend of 52 crore nett as all three days recorded good business. The weekend is by the far highest of this year beating the 42.50 crore nett of Airlift. In terms of all time openings the film stands in 17th place. The first weekend business of Fan is as follows

    Friday – 18,75,00,000
    Saturday – 15,50,00,000
    Sunday – 17,75,00,000

    Total – 52,00,00,000

The film has recorded good numbers in Mumbai, Delhi / UP, West Bengal and Mysore and even other circuits are fairly good but the issue will be that big drop in mass centres on Saturday. There were drops of 30-40% in some cities which makes the long term business depending on a handfull of cities.

The film was always going to be about where the Rajasthan’s and Gujarat’s go as you can’t get a big number without the support of these mass centres and this crowd has not really taken to the film.

These are samples only from multiplexes and the single screens may have witnessed more drops. The film has not witnessed healthy growth on Sunday so the drop is more than usual.

As per the early trends Fan 4th day collection will be in the range of 7-8 crores. The final numbers may vary as the growth in evening shows can be good.

  63. What a Fan written piece by Taran Adarsh !!
    .

FAN is a step in the right direction, in my opinion. The viewers have connected big time with SRK’s interpretation of the fan, who transforms from being a hero-worshipper to hero-stalker. But what about the film? Has it connected with the audience? At urban centres, yes. In mass circuits, unfortunately, the numbers are not as expected.

Come to think of it, it can’t get bigger than Yash Raj and SRK joining hands for a film project. However, this time around, it wasn’t Yash Chopra or Aditya Chopra on the director’s seat. It was Maneesh Sharma, a storyteller who has helmed some wonderful films for YRF in the past, calling the shots.

FAN, like we know by now, is not the usual masala film or the standard rom-com. Also, it’s a songless film [a strong musical score has always been one of the pillars on which YRF movies stand]. There’s no Madhuri, Juhi, Preity, Rani or Anushka in a YRF film this time. Moreover, it lacks romance — an ingredient that YRF movies are synonymous with.

Now let’s look at the release strategy. FAN wasn’t released during Eid, Diwali or Christmas, the festival period. It arrived in the midst of the IPL matches. That’s not all, the release of the film coincided with the examination period. And, most importantly, it opened a week after THE JUNGLE BOOK continues its dream run, charming and winning audience in hordes even when I pen this piece.

    .

Now let’s look at the economics of FAN…
Cost of production: Rs 85 cr
Print and Advertising: Rs 20 cr
Total budget of the film: Rs 105 cr
Note: Official numbers shared by YRF to this writer.

YRF has recovered a substantial amount from the pre-sale of Satellite rights, while the remaining rights [worldwide theatrical, worldwide digital – audio and video, worldwide licensing, worldwide merchandising and other rights] should ensure recovery of the investment and profits for YRF. In short, FAN should emerge a profitable venture for the investors in the final tally.

  64. FAN Monday (Day 4) Box Office Collection Update
4 hours ago by Indicine Team

FAN has shown a significantly big drop in both occupancy and collections on Monday. The average occupancy at centres that we tracked has dropped by around 50-60% from Friday and the collections too is low due to cheaper weekday ticket prices.

The drop is Pan-India. Single-screen business has crashed and multiplexes in cities too have shown bigger than expected drops. And unless the film picks up in the night, the Monday collections are likely to come in the 6-7 crore range.

In fact, ‘The Jungle Book’ is now recording higher percentage occupancy at multiplexes. FAN has significantly higher number of shows than ‘The Jungle Book’, which will divide the business and reduce occupancy, but it cannot be forgotten that FAN is running in its first week and it was the biggest film so far this year.

The evening / night shows could still pick up at multiplexes, like they usually do in major cities, but the occupancy both in the morning and noon is pretty low for the fourth day of a big film like FAN.

Starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead, FAN collected Rs 52.35 crore in its first weekend at the domestic (India) box office. The film has been made on a budget of Rs 105 crore, excluding the lead actor’s fee.

    SPEED NEWS DESK | 18 April 2016

The decision to sign Amitabh Bachchan as brand ambassador of the Incredible India campaign, ‘Atulya Bharat’ has reportedly been delayed owing to his name appearing in the leaked Panama Papers. The final decision that was supposed to be taken by the month of April, will now only be taken after a clean chit is given to Amitabh Bachchan.

The mega star, whose name surfaced in the list of 500 Indians parking their taxes in offshore accounts in the Central American tax haven Panama, had denied any knowledge of the offshore firms. He released a statement saying, “I do not know any of the companies referred to by Indian Express – Sea Bulk Shipping Company Ltd, Lady Shipping Ltd, Treasure Shipping Ltd, and Tramp Shipping Ltd. I have never been a director of any of the above-stated companies. It is possible that my name has been misused.”

After Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra had been roped in to be the face of the campaign. However, the decision to sign Amitabh Bachchan will only be made after the investigation report is out.

After a long wait, Maneesh Sharma’s highly-anticipated Fan finally opened this past weekend to somewhat mixed reviews. Critics unanimously and rightly raved about Shah Rukh Khan’s amazing performance (in a double role as semi-villainous superfan Gaurav Chandna, and semi-fictionalised superstar Aryan Khanna), while questioning the plot of the movie itself. In a film with a lot of meta-references to Khan’s career, perhaps the most meta fact of all is that everyone left enamoured by him, even though the film itself is pretty shit.

This Fan goes to places most conventional mainstream fare from the Hindi film industry does not. First of all, it takes love, obsessive love, away from the man-woman sexual dynamic, and transposes to another context, as addictive, and potentially as destructive.
    Faith.
Does God care for our love? Does He understand it? Do we really lose faith in our God, even when we say we do, or are we just trying harder for his attention?

And then there is the other Fan.

A lazily-plotted, childishly-written modern Bollywood star-vehicle, and this happens mostly post-interval, which requires not just the suspension but the obliteration of disbelief, straight out of the Rohit Shetty school of film-making

That Fan works, despite this cinematic schizophrenia, is because of Shahrukh Khan. He plays the character rather than Shahrukh Khan, ironically in a film where one of the characters is Shahurkh Khan. Returning in many ways to the edginess of his origins, he reminds us that there is no one in Bollywood that does obsession better than him.

    1. Jurassic Park (1994)

    5. Fast & Furious 7 (2015)

    6. The Jungle Book (2016)

Hollywood films started to be dubbed in the early 90’s and it was Jurassic Park that put them on the map in India as it was among the top ten grossers of 1994.

The Jungle Book is already the highest grossing Hollywood release in India and also the first film to cross 100 crore nett and with film to be around 115 crore nett in two weeks, the 150 crore nett is a real possibilty.

Hollywood has given a universal hit in India something which the Hindi film industry could not achieve in the first four months. Its shocking that even in a circuit like Bihar it may be the highest grosser as all Hindi releases have flopped there this year.

Fan has seen a big drop in collections on Monday with collections in the 5.75 crore crore nett range. The drop is 70% from day one but day one was a holiday . If we take the fair value of day one the drop is around 60% which is still too high.

This was always going to be the problem with film unless the content worked all over. The opening which the film took of was far too high for this type of film. If a film is nearing 20 crore nett on day one then the content and story telling has to be such that appeals all over.

Despite the big drop, the film is still commercially safe as will go into the black and with Yash Raj Films holding all rights there is no one in the chain to lose any money but eventually the film content has not found acceptance and the theatrical business will not go very far. The first four day business is around 57.75 crore nett and the first week will probably close somewhere around 70 crore nett mark.

  79. Well, this was unecxpected. Unlike Aamir, srk has friends everywhere. Akshay’s fans and Salman’s fans rooting for him and also some of aamir’s fans. Incidentally most of the aamir’s fans were once srk’s fans. Even the intolerance thing did not affect srk as much as it has affected aamir. Srk is still visible on many ads. Most of the reviewers eat out of his hands.
Akshay’s fans are usually agains aamir as his films are considered on a different level. And now they are gloating that Airlift is a niche film and also Baby.
They support srk as he is lesser of a competition and he is not friends with aamir. My enemy’s enemy is my friend.

Akshay – tho i like him – is frankly not in the same league as these three. He has his market and audience, who do not have very exacting standards, but he’s never really been in the big, big league.

I can’t see how Raees can even compete with Sultan, I don’t expect the latter to be a big performer anyway but if they come together, Sultan will really destroy it on opening. If it competes with dishoom or mohenjo daro it will just diminish its potential.

There is clearly still enough support for SRK as Fan’s opening was good at least but the form of his recent films hardly inspires any confidence in the fate of his future releases.

There’s nothing wrong about srk playing his fan here, it is convincing for sure, just go through the reviews for that. The timing with respect to being past his peak is also way off, since this is no film gloating over how big a superstar he is. Rather he is shown more human and fallible.

The issue is only the film is really grim, may not appeal to all. Something like Talvar, how many really wud want to watch that as entertainment? and the exaggerated criticism of the ‘improbable stuff’ in the second half. honestly , what is so unbelievable about it i dont know, but maybe they they cud have just set it in India, in Delhi..if you want to ruin a star’s reputation it can be done here also.. Khans, Akki, Devgn are good to go for at least 10 more years and this from the point of view of doing significant projects and not some sidey stuff…

Times and VFX have brought changes which can reverse the ageing process…… May be after 10-12 years, 2025 to be precise, if a new gen x star comes along and is able to give his own massive grosser capturing minds of masses & classes , there may be a chance of getting rid of them.

Nobody has been able to ground him in the true sense I feel there are still few remnants of ‘coke’ at Mannat and the place not truly flushed out yet. That place took down so many good souls like the zinta girl -sussane – hritik – malaika and whole bunch of celebrities…….. Something inherently went wrong here because a very real and intelligent person on tv / interviews / reality shows suddenly turns a nincompoop trying to dumb down things in a perfectly okay script. Most of the time one can sense he single handedly screws the project which seems done on the pre-production stage with his silly inputs as to what works with the audience …..
fact of the matter tastes, film audience change with time and more so today when everyone has access to movies and media of the world at their finger tips. I remember reading Ashutosh Gowariker how he had to constantly keep taming srk to remove the extra baggage from a lot of scenes in Swades. Now SRK may have been proven right since Swades failed at box office but now 12 years later, we are truly living in times of a movie where a movie like Swades may do wonders….same with Shimit Amim who did not give any slack to him with CDI.

With SRK , there is so much potential there considering the feeble competition, but it’s all withered away due to his compulsive effeminacy even while doing something serious. His realistic cinema which he has now signed on to may work only if he will lets the Imtiaz Alis and Anand Rai to remain rooted to rustic level….

Aamir ofcourse is a method actor to the core so he succeeds partially trying to get in the skin of character (surprisingly he could not get the bihari PK correctly), but Salman needs to thank Kashyap to root him down correctly for his new inning. Akki is the only one who seems to have a gradual and fantastic turn of event and with the current nationalistic leanings he is the perfect poster boy of that genre….

BO-wise only his Chennai Express was big enough to challenge the top grossers. If you take the top 20 grossers, SRK barely has 2 movies in there- CE and HNY- and even the latter is an under-performer. Salman on his own has 7 movies in there. Just that CE apart, SRK hasn’t been really relevant BO during the last few years.

There has been a constant decline. Salman and Aamir are working at different levels now really. Salman just had a 200cr disappointment with PRDP while SRK will find it tough to get past 100cr here. Aamir’s movie was doing 330cr 18 months back and Salman was coming up with a 315cr grosser last year. They are in a league of their own. And SRK doesn’t belong there anymore.

    • “Salman just had a 200cr disappointment with PRDP while SRK will find it tough to get past 100cr here”

Not debating that SRK and Aamir are ahead of SRK but there has to be some logical debate. If Dilwale would have been solo release during Christmas, it would have done 200 crores as well and would have been 200 crore disappointment like HNY was. PRDP and HNY released at same time and with 2 weeks solo during festival releases will pull it through to 180-200 crores easily. But FAN is anyways different movie than usual SRK-YRF and then its also non-festive release.

I doubt that SRK’s solo release during big festival first weekend will be less than 80-100 crores. If it is then you can safely say he’s not a star anymore!

every srk fans get excited before his film release as this is a film will shatter the boxoffice when the film is released he gets a splash and crash and dissapoints everyone..srk himself cannot carry a film on his shoulder anymore but needs a good content and yes good songs aswell…

    • I think Dilwale is a worse kind of flop than Fan. I will rather take a flop like Fan where there is at least some sort of critical acclaim and he might even end up getting some awards at the end of the year. No reviewer has really thrashed SRK’s performance. Dilwale is a worse kind of flop as it got trumped by a Fan like niche movie like Bajirao Mastani…Fan is really a Swades moment for SRK…a movie that flopped but where he is appreciated even from his worst critics…
Movies like Fan will always carry this flip side. If they don’t strike a chord they will fizzle away fast. So its not surprising it will end up below 100 crs. I will agree with Jay Shah – the problem here is not the opening, it is more the content, which though different and even well intentioned didn’t strike a chord. An opening day of 20 cr for a songless , heroine less movie is quite fine though I expected 25 +. But it would have got to 25+ had it been accepted..
And this will be a risk in all SRK’s next 4 movies. If content is not good, they all will end up below 100 as they all don’t carry universal appeal – whether it is Raees, the Gauri Shinde movie, Anand Rais movie or Imtiaz Ali’s movie. The latter’s movie is supposed to be a comedy but I don’t think Ali can make an universal movie…And I prefer this line up rather than having a Farah Khan or Rohit Shetty which even if average can get to 200 crores but is really getting SRK nowhere…

      • I think I’ve mentioned earlier.. during HNY and Dilwale phase, SRK again n again mentioned that he’s done with these kind of movies. From Age 50 to 55, he’ll do smaller films and do yearly 3 movies without much caring for the boxoffice. He wants to do all kinds of movies in these 5 years and from age 55 have a movie yearly once or every 2 years. Its like SRK feels these next 4-5 yrs his end of career so he wants of utilize all kinds of movies.

Obviously the sucess ratio will be 50-50 in these next 5 years but in his head, he knows he’ll be a star at 55 and then think about his career.

        SRK’s upcoming movies ..
        1) FAN (2016)
        2) Raees (2016)
        3) Gauri Shinde’s next (2016)
        4) Imtiaz Ali’s next (2017)

Aamir has nothing to prove in terms of acting or success. And he is content to do a film like Dangal at a leisurely pace.

        • Dangal is not a dull movie IMO. It is same genre as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and story of underdogs. Moreover Aamir himself compared the director to Raju Hirani saying the natural flair for adding humor throughout the script while retaining the seriousness. I’ve seen the director’s movie – Chillar Party and it was very well done movie with loads of humor!

Also, my bar for Dangal is pretty low. If the story has humor throughout and supported by a strong script, I don’t see it not doing less than 200 crs on solo Christmas release. Worst is 150 crore and still that will be a huge achievement. Aamir knows what he has on his hands, no wonder he’s spending 2 years on the movie! I feel, another ‘Lagaan’ in the making…. defying all odds!

  87. EYE IN THE SKY

Eye In the Sky is such a crafty and intelligent movie that it manages to convey philosophical musings on war and state-craft in a thriller- format with hardly any reel devoted to philosophical discussions on the same! This is a movie then that should not be missed at any cost. The movie unfolds guised as an edge-of-the-seat thriller with so many emotions encapsulating age-old discussions on wars, their futility or more-so, their necessity in the geo-political world as we know now where legal and moral discussions take heated turns across seas, oceans, deserts, countries and continents.

A covert drone operation is the order of the day near Nairobi, Kenya where 3 Islamist extremists who are on the Most Wanted Lists of Britain, the US, and Kenya are presently stationed. The eyes-in-the-sky (and of course also the actual drone-operators) are ensconced in Creech air-base in Las Vegas, Nevada; the Colonel commanding them is somewhere in Sussex, her over-seers including her military superior (a subdued and superbly detached Alan Rickman – his last outing) and a minister and attorney in London (British government over-seers); the English foreign-secretary is in Singapore peddling arms and ‘protective’ gears for soldiers, the American foreign-secretary is in China playing ping-pong with a group of God-knows-why-over-awed Chinese men: And at the center of this tragi-comic circus is an East-African girl-child selling bread unbeknownst that her life is hanging by an invisible thread running across all these inter-continental touch-points. The narrative-arc then plays out on the decision of Go/No-Go with regard to the drone-attack on the extremists’-haven unfortunately nestled right next to the girl’s home (her father, a bi-cycle repairer and her mother, a home-maker complete her family) And along this arc, the film masterfully takes the audience along in its thrilling moments and discerningly laid-out philosophical toppings on the actors, their actions, and the consequences of ‘decision-making.’

Among many such brilliant scenes is the one where the Colonel (Mirren) is faced with legalities and ‘moralities.’ (Quite symbolic; she has a legal representative to protect her and the child of disastrous consequences but there isn’t any ‘moral’ advisor; morality, ladies and gentlemen, is your own personal baggage.) Her verbal back-and-forth with the legal-advisor is top-notch. Also fantastic are the scenes conveying the tension housed in what the Americans are proud to call the ‘situation’ room; this time, however, the room is in England & the situation is in East Africa. Any change in the situation on ground in Nairobi mandates discussions and ‘approvals’ from higher-ups as minutes and seconds could mark the difference between two suicide-bombers blowing themselves and the world according to them and around them and its prevention with, of course, a necessitated collateral damage. Symbolism is powerful here: The American foreign-secretary gets a call when he is on a tour in China asking for his approval since one of the extremists is an American citizen but he is busy playing ping-pong and is flustered at being disturbed with ‘such’ a call! That ‘ping-pong’ ball being poorly smashed around is the life of a kid in a ‘third-world’ country for God’s sake! That also reflects the inability of those-in-power in taking decisions and getting along by passing the buck. The British foreign-secretary, after getting food-poisoned, is busy taking a ‘dump’ in a whatever-star hotel when scenes are inter-cut with drone-operators readying their weapons to target, in essence, taking a drone-dump onto one of the poor neighbor-hoods in a poor country! The father of the girl plays a dual role; an open-minded man who wants his daughter to study and be a million-miles away from Sharia-enforced lands and also of a bread-winner who but has to repair bi-cycles belonging to Sharia-lovers or Sharia-haters. (He hides her school-books when a customer comes along lest word breaks out that he is encouraging his daughter getting educated and mockingly admonishes her when she is lost in child-hood and plays hula hoop in front of that same Sharia-loving customer.) What happens to these folks when, an ‘objective’ drone plunders their lives? Will the same person STILL call Al-Shabab and its members fanatics? What has that ‘surgical’ strike achieved if this man were to turn to the other side or be radicalized? When numerical counts of 8 versus 80 are taken with regard to casualties and ‘greater’ damage and decisions are made, what are the consequences of those decisions?

All actors are in top form. Helen Mirren plays an unflinching military commander Katherine Powell to the extent that the audience shouldn’t be judged if they mutter ‘cold-hearted bitch’ – watch her talking to the ‘damage’ estimator and influencing him to somehow bring down the percentage of collateral damage to below 50% to get a legal clearing for the strike — under their breaths. (There is a very subtle, bubbling-under-the-surface hint of race-awareness in scenes where she is negotiating with the damage-estimator about cutting down the percentage of collateral damage. He is black, and possibly from Africa. Either way, Mirren talks to him quite differently even when she is practically ordering him to fudge numbers. There is something weighing on her mind when she is negotiating with him; both with regard to the unhealthy but arguably mandated necessity of cutting down the percentage, but maybe more so since she is talking with a black man about fudging numbers so she could get ‘legal’ clearance to bomb an African city’s neighborhood! Alan Rickman as Lt General Benson is superb in conveying a sense of urgency, detachment, and an embodiment of years of military-hardened exterior. Barkhad Abdi who stunned audiences as the Somalian pirate in Captain Phillips convincingly plays the mindful ground-operative. The actors playing members of the UK government are equally effective. Aaron Paul and Phoebe Fox as novices being forced to look at targets and innocent civilians BEFORE and AFTER drone-strikes for hours-on-end convey their frustrations and tumult of emotions finely. And the girl at the center of it all, Aisha Takow’s Alia Mo’Allim, effectively conveys the symbolism of life being caught between the devil and not-so-deep sea.

Are we know destined to live with the fact that murder or death – depending on which side you are on – by numbers is the new modern-warfare reality? Who wins? And who wins fast and first? Do the breads sell fast or do the bombs blow earlier or the drone hell-fire missile strikes sooner? Who is the decision-maker? What has greater weight: The mathematical, surgical precision of a drone or the moral ambiguity of the human?

    Quotes:

Angela: What you have done sitting in your chair is just disgraceful.
Benson: What you have seen just now sitting on your chair when dipping biscuits in your tea is what I have experienced as a General being on the ground and seeing the aftermath of 5 terrorist bombings. So NEVER tell a soldier that he cannot and doesn’t understand the cost of war.

Benson to the minister: You tell us to go to war. We go and do our business. YOU deal with the aftermath.

I think Deepika and Abhishek added a little bit to the initial as well. Both movies were underwhelming but if you look at SRK’s recent record, suddenly HNY looks like a monster there. Only CE surpassed it and nothing comes even close to it. His next big grosser is 40cr lower.

But the failure of the film clearly shows how SRK is rejected every time he ventures into unfamiliar territory. Chak de is an exception. Not his fault if he continues doing crappy films.

I wished for the film to do well for his sake. But guess that isnt happening anytime soon

    • There is another simple reason for his decline: AGE!! He looks 50 now, and a young restless India cannot go on forever watching buddhas romance girls half their age. Rajni is the only exception. Its doubtful that the 3 Khans, AK etc can go on for much longer with the returns they had in the last decade. If a Ranveer can deliver 190cr with a historical, the warning signs are already there for the oldies. They will need very innovative scripts to remain main leads from now on. But portraying themselves as romantic leads will not work much longer. JMHO.

SRK is romancing NO ONE in FAN. In all fairness, this argument does not hold good…

FAN marks a significant departure in SRK’s filmography — although SRK’s fans would obviously make it sound like he attempted an ARDH SATYA or a DEV..But considering srk’s ‘illustrious’ relationships with CHOPRAS and JOHARS, this is really appreciable…

  101. Fan – The Genre Makes It Tough
    Thursday 21 April 2016 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Fan dropped on the second day at key centres which basically sealed its fate and the postmortems will happen but the genre of the film always meant an uphill struggle to meet expectations which were mainly there because of a big star like Shahrukh Khan. It could have succeeded but was never going to be a superstar level hit. The highest grossing thriller till date is Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty at 112 crore nett and that says it all.

The next bests are Ek Villain and Race 2 and the list of disappointments in the genre is huge not just over the last few years but since they started being made in Hindi. The last big hit in the genre was Agni Sakshi way back in 1996 and this was mainly driven by Mumbai circuit which had a tax free status.

The last one to do extraordinary business all over was actually a Shahrukh Khan film Darr in 1993. This is probably the most successful thriller genre film in India ever but the reason it went so far was that other elements that are needed in a Hindi film were blended so well in the film especially a love story and music. Also it was directed by the one of the greats of Hindi cinemas Yash Chopra and there no directors of that level today in the Hindi film industry.

Basically the bigger the star, the bigger the risk with this genre. The more popular you are then the higher the expectations go which just can’t be met with the genre especially the sort of number that is expected of a Shahrukh Khan or a Salman Khan starrer. Its difficult to meet expectations and if a few circuits reject the film then the gap between expectation and final result can look huge which is the case with Fan.

The downside of mega stardom is that you can’t really go out of the drama, action and love story genre today as box office numbers are reported everywhere and outside these genres you need some outstanding film to put up a megastar number.

It is also interesting to note that the other superstar of the day Salman Khan has no film in the thriller genre in our database which goes back to 1994. Not only Salman Khan but even the legendary megastars of prior generations with great box office records are likely to have filmographies devoid of thrillers.

      • This is becoming pathetic now. What are their definition of thriler. It means nothing if they are restricting to 4-5 movies to tell us- look nothing works here so it’s nothiing to do with SRK that Fan doesn’t work.

Maybe really it’s not SRK’s fault. But the fact is that good thrillers do work and plenty of them have done so.

Abbas-Mustan have made a living out of them and it’s over 25 years now.

If thrillers don’t work then maybe Bobby Deol is a superstar for making Soldier or Gupt work, Akshay Kumar must have been a super star back then to make those Khiladi series and Mohra work.

What are the Dhoom series if they aren’t thrillers? I believe ETT is a spy thriller in fact. How come Amitabh Bachan made Ankhein work when he was way, way past his prime?

I don’t remember BOI coming out with a post to justify Khakee’s collections (even if never was the loser like Fan is). In fact they were hell bet trying to call it a flop from day 1.

  102. The Jungle Book Is Second Highest Inflation Adjusted Grosser
    Thursday 21 April 2016 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The Jungle Book is the second highest inflation adjusted grosser as far as Hollywood films are concerned. The biggest is still Titanic released in 1998 which grossed 29 crore nett at the time of release and that equates to 174 crore nett today The top five inflation adjusted Hollywood grossers based on 2015 ticket rates in India till date are as follows.

    1. Titanic (1998) – 174 crore
    2. The Jungle Book (2016) – 118 crore (13 days)
    3. 2012 (2009) – 112 crore
    4. Jurassic World (1994) – 100 crore
    5. Fast & Furious 7 (2015) – 97 crore

The Jungle Book may hit 150 crore but its very unlikely to catch Titanic which had close to 2 crore footfalls in India. Still its a big achievement because basically its the second biggest blockbuster ever for Hollywood in India. All the above are All Time Blockbuster hollywood releases in India. The other being Spiderman 3 which has a 80 crore nett inflation adjusted nett gross.

The big Hindi film grossers recently be it Bajrangi Bhaijaan or PK will probably not even be in the top twenty as far as Hindi films are concerned. It shows how the audience for Hollywood releases is growing as a film today can challenge to be the biggest of all time against previous Hollywood releases but the biggest Hindi film falls well short of its counterparts of 20-30 years back.

  107. FAN : A DISASTER OF EPIC PROPORTIONS

A few minutes into Gaurav Chandna and I had lost interest in the film never to be re-engaged again. Both the writer and Shahrukh as an actor have failed with Gaurav big time. We see Gaurav Chandna, the crazy fan of the superstar Aryan Khanna, mimic Aryan Khanna in the local colony function and win a trophy along with cash prize of Rs.20,000/. Fair enough. The problem is Shahrukh’s portrayal of Guarav is more like a mimicry rather than acting. He walks, talks and behaves like a cross between a psychopath and a mental retard. Unfortunately, the writers too invest the character with equal amount of superficiality and absurdity forgetting to create a credible human being. We get it that he is a crazy fan of Aryan Khanna and he wants to go and meet him in Mumbai. But going ticketless just because Aryan had gone ticketless on his first trip to Mumbai to become an actor? Is I worth taking the risk? He could have easily bough an unreserved ticket. His father could have asked, “Beta, how will you go all the way to Mumbai without a reserved berth? “ He could have replied, “But papa, do you know when Aryan Khanna went to Mumbai from Delhi he went WT. At least I have an unreserved ticket!” Then he could have some sort of adventure in the general compartment. The drama we see now with TTE in the film takes the film to an Over-The-Top territory from the word go. The result. We never buy in to the character of Gaurav. It only becomes worse as he starts interacting with his idol. Aryan Khanna’s action in getting Gaurav beaten up by the police this far? Just so that Gaurav can have a reason for seeking revenge and the film can have some kind of a plot line?

Things get even more preposterous after the interval when Guarav lands up at Madame Tussauds pretending to be Aryan Khanna. All logic or credibility of behaviour gets thrown to the winds. All tis while , either when he is at the gates of the star’s bungalow, or when the rival star meets Gaurav, or when Aryan Khanna meets his fan for the first time; no one remarks, ‘ Hey you look so much like Aryan himself! And he must be 25 while the star in his 40’s. Yet he has no problem in passing off as Aryan Khanna even for people looking at him from close quarters. He even talks sharp English like Aryan Khanna. And what about Aryan Khanna? What is he doing running across terraces, swinging from ropes, and vrooming on motorbikes,

The more AMPLE the skin show,
        The AMPLER the praise!

Similarly if everything staying the same srk replaced by abhishrek or aamir –there would’ve been ESSAYS & thesis here.
The former will NEVER get such a solo role (nor is he remotely capable as a star or actor to deal with it!) and the latter will take four years to prepare for it coming with a “laboured” and rehearsed perfomance.
As for Salman u give him ten lifetimes and he can’t do this role full stop.

        The above review is OBNOXIOUS
        even HILARIOUS

Then why dont you accept Utkal’s criticism in the same vein ?
It is not beating a dead horse, it is simply a film criticism. In the name of sympathy, why should one overlook the faults?

Tomorrow if Dangal fails, there will be lots of criticisms just and unjust. Mostly the criticism will be just. Just the way Mangal Pandey was criticised. And a superhit like Raja Hindustani was not liked by even aamir fans. His acting looked OTT.

Once again I am bringing aamir into the picture because the argument requires it.
