        • Over the years one sees this increasingly. Fans who aren’t just devoted to their favorite stars, aren’t even just ‘fanatical’ about them in some old-fashioned sense but become people who start occupying some sort of alternate reality. Not trying to be harsh on Naveen here. He isn’t the only one. I can think of others too but really there’s some fantasy space folks start living in beyond a point. For a while they keep struggling ‘against’ reality and then they just make a leap and go over into this fantasy space. I’ve always wished Akshay the best (even if I couldn’t sit through most of his comedies). I’m certainly glad to see him do much better in recent times with some of his other efforts. But to think that he is Salman if he just did less is to live in bizarro land!

        • Sorry Satyam – you missed the point. Opening day record is not possible with Akshay’s release frequency.

Why do you make fanatics sound low when you too are the one and to a greater degree?

          maybe I have low self-esteem..

but leaving aside what I am or not I am actually not calling you a fanatic. I’m saying somewhat politely your condition is a bit more advanced than that!

        • Well what more can a “Fan” want when his actors previous film, released Five months ago, is the biggest hit of the year. 😄
His current is going to be superhit.
His next releasing in August is going to be another Hit.
          ABOVE ALL
Getting wholesome praise for his acting across genres and styles.
So yes I am in another sphere and why not dude?

          Like

        • yes exactly my question.. why don’t you ‘want’ what you ‘have’? You’re the one who feels this anxiety to prove he’s Salman or whoever. Why don’t you just accept that Akshay believes in charity? He’s happy with his 100 or whatever, the rest of the time he wants to do community service and give his fans more films every year. Graciously he’s agreed to let Salman and others get 200-300 crores. He’s so nice, he decided not to even cross the Baaghi opening day. But then Tiger Shroff possibly does less films than him.

        • And what turn you on Jayshah and Satyam?

Fanatics of highest proportions, you build untrue stories. No where I have compared Akshay with Salman or other stars. For me Alshay is a parallel indsutrsy in Bollywood and has a different business model that’s working big time for the industry and himself. It’s you two who have been playing politics by picking on his style of films. Of course he has thrown eggs by being the most versatile actor since last few years.
Many know that you both are known to be hands in glove in deconstructing stars like Salman, SRK and Akshay.
You know Aamir’s limitations and hence try to put him in sphere that’s unique to him while deriding the aspects that are unique to other stars.
You are the ones in living in this world and losing it big time.

  5. Vidya Balan, who is a force to reckon with in Bollywood, is all set to make her debut in Marathi cinema with Ekk Albela.

The film, which is based on the life of the late actor Bhagwan Dada, will see Vidya essay the role of the late actress Geeta Bali.

On May 27, the film’s song Shola jo bhadke was launched at an event in Mumbai where the B-town beauty was present along with her Marathi co-star, Mangesh Desai.

Talking about what drew her towards her first Marathi venture, the Kahaani star says, “Ekk Albela is not a biopic on Geetaji; you don’t see all shades of her. You will see Geeta the star and see me recreating her songs. But, yes, I do get drawn towards real life stories and that is why Bhagwanda’s biopic interested me.”

While Vidya is open to the idea of doing a biopic on Geeta Bali, she points out it won’t be easy as “I will have to put in a lot of work into the look.”

In his first full-length feature itself, Raam Reddy seems to have mastered something that’s most difficult to master in cinema: a way of suggesting a dreamlike clarity in a brazen setting.

The people in Thithi are neither like my neighbours nor like the people from my hometown, but they are more like characters from a great novel that I had to take in wholly and unquestionably.

I think I heard some twigs break like little bones and saw small flames leap out like glowworms. This is an astonishing movie.

From the review it seems a lot of fun and i am going for it –

“The best part is that each of the main characters has a typicality which is amusing and highly entertaining. Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati, having grown up in London, speak Hindi with difficulty but often end up literally translating English idioms in Hindi, to hilarious outcome. For example, Ganga tells Sandy, “Chalo, baahar latakte hain.” What she means to tell a puzzled Sandy is, “Let’s hang out.” Sandy, being the split personality that he is, gets into Sundy mode sometimes. Teddy creates comedy with his wrong usage of words. Bunty raps at the slightest opportunity. Batook Patel has a typical style of talking wherein he uses names of established brands in his day-to-day conversations and creates comedy from that. Urja Nagre has a penchant for employing commonly-used abbreviations in his sentences but those abbreviations mean something very different, which he explains soon after using them. Aakhri Pasta continues his ‘I’m a joking’ refrain from the earlier films in the franchise.”

“…The writers have taken cinematic liberties galore and borrowed from the personal/professional lives of their actors to good advantage. For instance, Teddy (Ritesh Deshmukh), known for his slip of the tongue, at one point, addresses girlfriend Jamuna alias Jenny as Genelia (who is Ritesh’s wife in real life). Similarly, Sandy (Akshay Kumar) gets a seizure when he remembers the Indian flag being hoisted in a scene from Airlift (which starred Akshay Kumar). Again, Bunty (Abhishek Bachchan) very heroically saves the wax statue of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (his wife in real life) from falling down and breaking.”

I had also read somewhere on these hilarious lines.

I couldn’t quite decide what was more clever: the casting of three anglicised actresses in a movie based in London or their dialogues. Sample this: ”Kya aap table ke liye aaye hain?” Is it their idea of a joke? I would let it pass if it was one odd joke. The film abounds with such gems.
Bahar latakte hain- Let’s hang out.
Bandook ka beta- Son of a Gun.
Thandi dawai lo- Take a chill pill.
Every character has a strange way of humour. Riteish Deshmukh’s character has a silly way with words too. ”Will you be my tawaiyaf…oops, I mean wife?” Or “Aap mera nirodh karenge…matlab virodh karenge.”

In Housefull 3, I have Riteish, Akshay, Boman, Jackie Shroff, Lisa, Jacqueline, Nargis. There’s a big ‘jhund’ – you are comfortable. All the focus is not on me. The burden is not on me. Happy New Year too had a big gang. In Bol Bachchan, I was sharing the burden. It’s very easy to get comfortable in that zone. That’s what has happened. Sometimes, when your films are not working, you tend to not worry because your other film is on its way. But we know how films have shut down half way because the actors were no longer commercially viable. It’s a tough business. I have faced it so many times. And I have been in the industry since 16 years. Actors are blessed if they get a job for even 3 years. So now, it’s time to move out of the comfort zone. There’s a reason why I have not signed on any films. I need to start questioning myself again. And I need to develop a script that will challenge me. ”

  15. Housefull 3 Does Well On Day One

    Friday 03 June 2016 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Housefull 3 has done well on day one with around 15.50 crore nett as per early estimates. The opening will be the second best opening day for an Akshay Kumar starrer behind Singh Is Bling which was released on a national holiday. The big plus is the gap is not much and only around 1 crore nett despite that film releasing on a big national holiday. The opening day will also be the second highest of the year after Fan.

The opening is not a huge opening which settles the fate on day one so it will be about what happens on Saturday and Sunday. The film is for families so even if the growth is not huge on Saturday, it will still have a chance to put up a big Sunday.

The film has fared better in multiplexes than single screens which could be down to plenty of English in the film or its been a long time since an Akshay Kumar starrer has really performed in single screens. A good performance in single screens would probably have meant the biggest opening day for an Akshay kumar starrer.

  22. Housefull 3 did well on day one grossing 15.50 crore nett apprx. The film fared best in Gujarat (2 crore apprx) and Rajasthan (94 lakhs) but these markets could have been even better if single screens were strong. The multiplexes in places like Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Surat put up very good numbers.

There was apprehension within the film industry when the film opened as the opening was not like a biggie and then the usual negative press which comes for the commercial Hindi film which led to very low numbers were doing the rounds. This was likely to happen as the youth interest in the film will be limited and it is families which will decide the fate and they do not come out on the Friday morning.

The collections were better post 5pm as collections in cities and theatres which are driven by family audiences improved as expected. The big question will be how this audience appreciates the film and it will be next few days which will answer that.

  24. Growth of Housefull Brand – BOI
The Housefull brand has seen very similar growth on its opening days. The brand has gone up 25-30% apprx with each of the releases.. Below are the opening day collections of the three Housefull films .

    Housefull (2010) – 9.32 crore
    Housefull 2 (2012) – 12.13 crore (+30%)
    Housefull 3 (2016) – 15.25 crore (+25%)

The initials of the brand have shown good growth as the releases get wider but the real test for Housefull 3 is can it stretch the lifetime business of the brand. This will be a test as Housefull 2 is the second highest grossing comedy film only behind Ready which had Salman Khan coming off a Dabangg. .

But definitely worth watching for its representation of a French housing estate in the banlieus. I saw this as part of the “Rendez-Vous with French Cinema” series a few months ago in New York, and there was another film on the theme of immigration that was even better (“Peur de Rien”, released in America under the title “Parisienne”).

Case in point is Singh Is Blingg which on any other non holiday would have opened to 10-11 cr. On a holiday it opened to a whopping 21 cr nett which is 100% more or double.

This is quite a remarkable statistics. The lovers of opening day figures – Satyam and Jayshah usually forget this.

She was a recipient of the 1987 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindi-Marathi theatre acting.

Starting her life as a teacher in Chhabildas High School, Dadar, Sulabha’s romance with theatre began when she asked the famous author-director Vijay Tendulkar in the 1950s to write some plays for the school students.

Tendulkar, along with Vijaya Mehta, Shriam Lagoo and Arvind Deshpande, who later married Sulabha, were the initiators of the experimental theatre movement of the 1960s and 1970s, which she (Sulabha) joined subsequently.

Over the years, Sulabha acted in scores of movies, mainly in lovable mother or grandmother roles, or evil mother-in-law characters, in both Hindi and Marathi films, besides key roles in several TV serials and Marathi theatre, her first love and earned critical acclaim as well as audience approval.

Among her prominent films were “Bhumika”, “Gaman”, “Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyo Aata Hai”, “Vijeta”, “Virasat”, “English Vinglish”, and “Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastan”.

On stage, she acted in Marathi plays like “Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe”, “Sakharam Binder”, “Baba Harvale Aahet”, among many others.

She was seen on the small screen in serials like “Rishtey”, “Badalte Rishte”, “Tanha” and “Mrs. Tendulkar” among others.

In 1971, Arvind and Sulabha co-founded ‘Awishkar’, a theatre group and its kids wing ‘Chandrashala’ which imparts training and performs professional children’s theatre.

Top Bollywood, television and stage actors, directors and her colleagues expressed shock at her death.

  28. Housefull 3 Has Decent Second Day

    Saturday 04 June 2016 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Housefull 3 has grossed around 16 crore nett as per early estimates on Saturday. The film has shown growth in the 5% range but could have been better but on the other side there is some growth there. The film has fairly good collections but trend is average over the first two days. The two day total is around 31 crore nett plus.

The main growth has come in Delhi NCR and Bangalore while single screens are an issue for the film and are not performing. The single screens did not open great yesterday and fell further today. The film will be depending on multiplexes as its unlikely the single screen contribution will be like it should for a big commercial hindi film.

The film will need a big jump on Sunday to reach 50 crore nett and it is possible though single screens will have to have that big jump on Sunday which they normally do. The weekend will probably fall short of the 52 crore nett of Fan which is the highest weekend of 2016.

  30. Housefull 3 – One of the best slapstick comedy in years!

I had an occasion to walk out of the first instalment of the Housefull franchise. I didn’t dare to enter the second instalment. But I did went for the third occasion and thank god I did!

For one of the first time in the series heroines have got good comic lines, otherwise also the comedy quotient is fun. Akshay and Ritesh were really good in their roles. Abhisekh i felt had fun, but was marginalised as the third lead ( what life does! once ritesh used to be his supporting act – BM). All the heroines looked great and added to the movie with their english accent and hindi translation of english phrases!

Loved the songs, good peppy music!

for once I didn’t want the movie to end! Had a laugh riot. Happy for Akshay kumar, thought still regret he made those really bad first two instalments but atleast we got the third instalment because of the lame ducks from Sajid Khan!

I have to make special mention for the directors, who can really teach said khan how to direct a comedy! Also putting your brains away for such movies is important but for that to work the comedy content has to work!

Awaiting further movies of this director duo! And rustom (my most awaited flick of the year as it appears inspired from Nanavati Murder case which led to abolition of Jury in India) from Akshay, seems to be his year! He is back on track!

Akshay Kumar gets another hit, I think Naveen is happy, Abhishek gets his 3rd 100cr grosser after D3 and Bol Bachan. So, I guess Satyam and Jayshah are happy as well. Happy days at Satyamshot after the doom and gloom surrounding Fan!

Think BB was the only worthwhile moment for him in this entire series. For more reasons than one. Yes if Housefull were to become a huge grosser that might be something but it’s not going to do that. A bit of positivity is really nothing tangible for him at this stage of the game. And this hasn’t been a good enough consolation prize for a long time. I am interested in seeing what this ‘pause’ means for him and what projects materialize from hereon given that he’s seeing he’s working on a few scripts that aren’t ready yet. In other words I am interested in seeing what the reinvention move is at this point. The rest doesn’t really matter. Or it hasn’t in my view after BB.

    • From whatever I have read, Abhishek got the best deal in Housefull3 than what he got in Happy New Year or Bol Bachchan which had him in a bigger role but brought his graph down.

I am happy for him and think it will be a while before we see Abhishek again. Instead of looking for scripts he should look for producers unless he does himself.

For me Housefull 3 being superhit was a foregone outcome once I saw its promo. I quite like this franchisee and knew it would work.

Whatever Satyam and Jayshah plan, they have failed to understand the Akshay Kumar strategy since last few years. They were praying for Housefull 3 to flop and had predicted its doomsday when promos came.

I think Akshay is now going through his best phase. He is superhit, more confident than in 2012 and choosing scripts and mixing things with intelligence. It’s good time to be his fan. He has raised the bar high.

  33. Housefull 3 Has Strong Sunday – Record Breaking For Akshay Kumar Starrers
    Sunday 05 June 2016 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Housefull 3 had a strong Sunday with collections set to cross 20 crore nett. Sunday will be around 20.50 crore nett which would mean a weekend of 52 crore nett. The film recorded strong figures all over on Sunday with only East India being low but that are has under performed from day one. The big circuits like Mumbai, Delhi / UP and East Punjab showed big gains as did Central India.

This will be the highest single day ever for an Akshay Kumar starrer and the first time that an Akshay Kumar starrer has ever gone over 20 crore nett. The weekend is also the first time an Akshay Kumar starrer has crossed 50 crore nett. The numbers may not be huge in the context of business today with fils getting benefit of holidays and festive periods and going very high but it has beaten all records for an Akshay Kumar starrer.

The business on Sunday gives a better picture on the trend of the film as Saturday was limited growth. The film is for families so Sunday was also going to be the big growth rather than the Saturday which is more for youth driven films..

        • that’s a strong Sun jump. Still, the weekdays will reveal whether it can really add serious numbers beyond the weekend or basically end up in that 120 range. If it really surprised with trending during the week and managed to do 140 or more it would be much more than one might have expected prior to release. At that point it will have been a much more liked film than HNY or something. But it has to get there first! What’s also true is that with a much stronger opening this might well have done 175-200 (assuming it trends minimally well). But you need a real top star for that sort of thing. Not a knock on Akshay. But he isn’t Aamir or Salman or for that matter SRK or Hrithik (whatever the weaknesses of these last two might be) in terms of getting huge openings at least on their strongest days. And with the second sequel of a successful franchise it’s not unfair to raise this question. If anything this sort of film is designed to get the best possible opening.

        • Satyam this is where we have difference in opinion.

          Part 1 – Holiday release

The stars you have quoted have to have ‘spaced out’ releases and holiday on top of it to get a HUGE opening. Look at the importance SRK is giving to the 26 Jan release for Raees and Hrithik on 15th August release.

The only film that has really done well recently on a non holiday release has been YJHD but the same could not be repeated.

Salman is the only superstar who can open 20+ even on a non holiday and on any genre and with frequent releases at the moment. But we all know he is really the HUGEST star at the moment.

SRK just about did this with FAN on a restricted holiday release. However i doubt if he could have done with Fan as 3rd SRK movie released in the same year. Ditto with Aamir. I however feel both would open more than Akshay.

          =======

Part 2 – Cost of Movies

However in these discussion we do not realise how important openings are for these stars. The cost that Aamir, SRK and Salman films has makes it imperative for them to open BIG. If they don’t for any reason, their film would tank. The same is not the case with Akshay films. His biggest film of recent times – Housefull3 had trade experts calling good opening with an opening of a mere 15.5Cr because of the lower cost involved. Housefull 3 was sold at a price lower than FAN and at half the cost of Sultan (rough assumption).

So for the cost of movies Akki is making, his opening of 15 Cr is at par or equally significant as the 20+Cr opening of other stars whose films costs significantly more.

So Fan open at 20 Cr is as good as Housefull 3 opening at 15.5 Cr because of the cost involved.

So calling Akshay a smaller star because of his opening day being lower is actually not correct. His BO dynamics are significantly different from other stars.

Would he want a bigger opening – of course he would as then his films would become a blockbuster at his price. AT the moment they are ending up with at best superhit status. For bigger opening, he needs bigger banner and canvas. Something he was getting during Tashan or CC2C days.

Robot2.0 will show his opening power in real terms only in the Bollywood belt. This is the movie which in cost and canvas will compare with Sultan or PK.

          Like

        • I think you have reversed the logic here Naveen….People wont make a movie of same budget as they make with SRK or Aamir or Salman because he cannot get that opening…He can get an opening between 12 to 16 depending on the merits of the movie…and that’s why the budget is also controlled for his movies…The cost of the movie need not restrict the opening of the movie… Even if the big three makes movie at the budget og 50 to 60 cr they can still get a 25+ opening.
This is not a rap on Akshay…this is his standing right now in the industry. Just after the Big 3 + Hritik + Ranbir…

According to a well-informed source the role is directly inspired by Dev Anand’s legendary turn as tourist guide in Vijay Anand’s Guide.

“Shah plays a tourist guide. Like Dev Saab in Vijay Anand’s film there are many twists and turns in the Shah Rukh Khan’s character-graph. He undergoes a moral transformation that changes his life and that of others whom he encounters,” says the source.

This film has performed very well in Mumbai thanks to the Gujarat / Saurashtra belt and the Mumbai collections in four days have hit the 20 crore nett mark. The film had a very good Sunday but with business lopsided to multiplexes the ticket pricing factor comes into play on Monday as a huge ratio of business is coming from multiplexes where ticket rates are dropped and this is not a content film which did limited business over the weekend.

The first week business will be good and should be around 78-79 crore nett if it shows normal 10-15% falls over the next three days. The record for Akshay Kumar starrers is 79.50 crore nett of Airlift but that got advantage of a huge Republic Day holiday over the weekdays.

    • doubt it will do more than 120 or so. Unless it has an unexpectedly strong second weekend. With Akshay this is always the range. Some of his smaller films can over perform and get to this number but even his biggest franchises now don’t clear this range. This is of course mostly because of the initial. You need to trend super-strong to make up (and that too to a degree) for the lack of an exceptional initial and that sort of trending is just not seen on 99% of films these days.

I saw HF3 and it actually wasn’t bad at all- I liked it better than HF2. I thought the first half was better and funnier than the second (except the climax which is hilarious). It’s been a while since we’ve had those films where all 20 characters are in the climax in some silly situation. The songs surprisingly didn’t hinder the film and are pretty catchy for this type of film. In terms of actresses, Nargis and Lisa are atrocious in every sense especially when they talk. Jaqueline’s hindi is better now which made her the best of the 3 imo. Boman Irani and Chunkey Pandey were reliable as always. For some reason, idk why the big stars (Aamir then SRK and now Akki) keep adding Jackie Shroff to their films- he really doesn’t add anything and was/is pretty average and ordinary.

In terms of heroes- definitely Akshay’s show. He is a riot, especially in his Vikram in Anniyan-inspired double role. Ritesh is funny and reliable as always. Abhishek is good, but it seemed like he was almost the third lead, for example what Ritesh was in HF2. To be fair, I think all 3 leads got about the same amount of footage/screen time, so its up to the actors to maximize and here Abhishek could’ve done better cause he wasn’t up to the other 2’s level. I guess what this film does for him is that it doesn’t hurt his standing or view from the audience’s POV, which is better than nothing.

Overall a 3/5 and a solid one-time watch comedy. Akshay is 2/2 this year, both being 100 crore films (HF3 seems to be on its way to 100 crores) now lets see what Rustom does.

The “Gangs of Wasseypur” director said there is no sense of freedom here.

“I always wondered what it felt like to live in North Korea… Ab to plane pakadney ki bhi zaroorat nahin…,” he posted on Twitter.

The 43-year-old filmmaker’s tweet came after Censor Board had purportedly raised certain objections regarding references to Punjab following which the movie may have to go through some changes.

“Udta Punjab”, starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh in pivotal roles, deals with the substance abuse in Northern part of the state and its effects on the youth.

“There is no film more honest than UDTA PUNJAB… And any person or party opposing it is actually GUILTY of promoting drugs,” Kashyap added.

Other members of the film fraternity also took to twitter to oppose the decision of CBFC.

        Like

        • not sure about DMD or GoW. Not even sure about Haider. ‘Controversial’ as it might have been I suspect that there are aspects of the Indian past or ‘history’ if you will that are much more of a live wire in this context. In other words JA today might face much more trouble than it did then (of course this happened in BJP run MP and Rajasthan). In this context note how ‘interesting’ the motion poster is. It starts with ‘before the British’, ‘before the Mughals’ and then quickly makes a gigantic leap to ‘before Christ’, ‘before Alexander’, ‘before Buddha’. So a millennium of more of ‘Hindu’ rule which features some of the greatest dynasties of Indian history and equally some o the cultural peaks is simply glossed over. Not even Asoka is mentioned! But then there’s a followup to this ‘before India as we know it’. Now of course there’s nothing odd about this except that this is too is the stuff of ‘debate’ in many of the same circles. The idea is that ‘India’ is as old as the Garden of Eden (!) or the Big Bang (if one wants to be a bit more scientific about it) and that the further back you go the more the borders of that India ‘increase’ but it’s otherwise the same land with the same people (only Hindus) and so on. The entire marketing of that motion poster relies on a different narrative. Now of course there’s a kernel of truth here which is that many of those great Hindu dynasties do not belong to the popular imagination the way the Mughals or the British do. Asoka himself was ‘rediscovered’ by the British a century ago or a bit more after knowledge of him and his empire had been completely forgotten and/or lost. Of course Asoka could have been mentioned there given that there has been at least a Bollywood film on him in the recent past. But otherwise you can say Chandragupta Maurya and it simply does not have the ring of Akbar to it (unfortunately for that crowd though the way textbooks are being rewritten at a furious pace today far exceeding the same efforts that were happening at a state level possibly means that this state of affairs might not obtain forever!). Gowariker in any case belongs (by his own admission) to a certain Amar Chitra Katha mindset where a certain romanticized view of the past dominates and where for want of a better word if you combine all the stuff they did on all sorts of historical figures and then mythological sources and folktales and what not you get essentially the Desai view of India! Now many might attack Gowariker for all this but notice how arguing ideologically is one thing and living the ideological ‘lie’ quite another. So you have leaders from the BJP routinely quote Urdu poetry on the cable channels (not Hindi) or you have our own fierce adherent of the same values here (Di) objecting to Umrao Jaan’s songs not being included in a certain writeup and proceeding to quote some of the choicest Urdu lyrics from that film. Not that language has anything to do with religion but in that ordering of the world (on both the Hindutva side and the Islamist one in the subcontinent) it very much does (as it indeed it did historically leading up to and during the Independence movement). And so one can protest about all kinds of things and yet the traces of history cannot be so easily erased. This applies to every ideological fanatic who wishes to simply ‘purify’ the historical record. Finally I’d add that ironically even those who argue against the Nehruvian sense of the Indian past also confirm it by more or less relying on the same notion of an unbroken Indian identity. They simply configure it differently. Nehru’s own version is itself a British one. The very name India/Hindu has ‘foreign’ origins. The Greeks or Persians or both in all probability responsible for this coinage.

History always offers enormous ironies and unsettling realities. But not for those who live in fantasies.

On Monday, the makers of Bollywood film “Udta Punjab” are said to have been asked by the Revising Committee of the censor board to remove all references to Punjab — a decision perhaps taken under pressure from the ruling dispensation in the state which is dealing with a festering problem of drugs.

In response to this, Jeetendra’s son Tusshar Kapoor shared his father’s message with his fans.

After Bol Bachchan and Happy New Year, Abhishek has yet another hit in hands with Housefull 3 and interestingly, all are comedy.

    • He should do comedies .. but as leading man. BB was good deal though where his role was bigger than Ajay.

      • yes there he had the double, was the symbolic center (the title et al). But that was unusual. This doesn’t normally happen in a multistarrer to the lesser star. Stealing scenes or getting more out of what you have is one thing but having that advantage to begin with is something else altogether.

    Monday 07 June 2016 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Housefull 3 had a pretty good hold on Monday dropping around 45% from its first day. The collections are the second highest Monday this year after Airlift which did 9.75 crore nett apprx but that Monday was before a big national holiday so get the benefit of strong collections in the evening. The four day business of Housefull 3 is as follows

    Friday – 15,25,00,000
    Saturday – 16,25,00,000
    Sunday – 21,75,00,000
    Monday – 8,50,00,000 apprx

    Total – 61,75,00,000

The film can now become the highest first week of the year and cross 80 crore nett. This would be the highest first week for an Akshay Kumar starrer and the second Friday will decide where the lifetime business can go and whether it has a chance of being the biggest grosser of the year till date.

  46. Why new Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani should ban his own films first

In 1994, the current censor board chief produced a Kondkeisque film titled Andaaz (the extra a because it should have been certified AA). The film had a soundtrack only somebody with Nihalani’s moral courage and cultural finesse could have hummed at home.

Here are the top three songs of the film, as they appear in the album: Khada hai, khada hai, khada hai (a visibly aroused Anil Kapoor urging his newly-wed wife Juhi Chawla to open the door with understandable urgency); Le lo, le lo mera; and Ye (originally mein) maal gaadi mujhe dhakka laga (the aforementioned wife urging the husband to push fast as the engine had become hot and now it needs to reach the destination). Another one, featuring Anil Kapoor and Karishma Kapoor (his student in the film), announced the duo’s intention that ‘roz karenge hum karenge ku ku ku ku.’

Nihalani’s films were among the pioneers of the pelvis-thrust-in, bust- thrust-out choreography that later ushered in the sarkae-lo-khatiya age of Indian cinema. In his 1992-93 film Aankhen, Shilpa Shirodkar swayed so suggestively to ‘Khet gaye Baba, Bazaar gayee maa; akeli hun ghar ma tu aaja balma’ that many cinema owners were forced to lock the loos to keep out the jerks in the audience from spending too much time inside. And Lal Dupatte Wali became a rage only because Aankhen’s film’s heroines ever so subtley raised the hemline of their skirts while singing ‘Har kisi ke liye ye khirki nahin khulti.’

  49. A defense deal, a technology agreement and American investments in India are also expected to be announced on Tuesday. Mr. Modi has made clear that he intends to set aside decades of standoffishness — rooted in India’s colonial experience — to cement closer ties with Washington, in part because the next American leader may not share President Obama’s enthusiasm for India.

The news media in India has extensively chronicled comments by Mr. Trump that critics have said were racist, his “America First” views and his unorthodox campaign. While Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has said little about India, his vows to tighten immigration policies worry Indian officials.

“Modi wants to get as much as he can out of Obama’s last months in office,” said Ashley J. Tellis, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

For the Americans, the most important part of Mr. Modi’s visit was his announced intention to formally join the Paris climate change agreement by the end of this year. So far, countries representing about 50 percent of global emissions have announced that they will submit legal paperwork to the United Nations documenting their compliance with the deal.

I personally think Obama needed Modi mostly for the climate deal and to get India on board. There is always the geo-strategic angle vis-a-vis China and certainly India lines up in this sense but I do believe the Paris accords and its aftermath were the big ticket item and sure enough that seemed to be the headliner this time as well.

  53. Is ‘Housefull 3’ humourous or offensive? Here’s what a feminist thought

First off, credit where credit’s due. Farhad-Sajid have actually made the least derogatory Housefull film yet.
That isn’t to say that Housefull 3 isn’t blatantly ableist, racist and sexist (in that order of severity) at various points. But compare it to the earlier Houses Full or even the more recent Milap Zaveri master-farce Mastizaade, and you’ll see that this film depends on physical comedy and goofy gags more than anything else, for its (sometimes truly funny) laughs. Who’d have thunk?

Love how Boman Irani’s Gujarati billionaire Batook is proud that his three daughters are sanskaari, because they pretend to sleep early and wear salwars (for precisely one scene in the film). He isn’t proud that one of them happens to be a doctor, another works with an organization for the differently-abled and a third does something at a wax museum (seriously). Nope. Betis are sanskaari because salwar. (Also, this writer takes personal affront at the insinuation that night owls lack appropriate sanskaars. You should meet me, Farhad bhai, Sajid bhai)

Abhishek Bachchan (who’s still around?) plays a rapper in the film. And his signature rap begins with a chant of ‘teri maa-behen’. No. Just… no.

This one’s for the CBFC, affectionately called the ‘Censor Board’ in India, despite them having no constitutional authority to censor anything. Apparently, Abhishek’s aforementioned rap went through massive changes on the Board’s recommendation. That entailed changing a line that went ‘tere baap ka london’ to ‘teri izzat har koi lootay’. Yes, ‘everyone should rape you’ is more acceptable than a line that means literally nothing at all. Let that sink in.

In the Housefull 3 universe, white people get invited to parties, while black women serve them at these parties. Yup. Batook bhai has three black women as housemaids in his lavish London home, and they’re treated just the way housemaids in India are treated – horribly.
At one point, Batook’s daughters get three scoundrels drunk and pretend to get them into bed, only to trick them into having sex with these three housemaids instead. The three housemaids get pregnant by the morning. (You can’t make this stuff up even if you try.) In India, respect for people ends just about where their skin colour goes a shade darker than ‘wheatish’. (Admit it, you love that descriptor. As long as people aren’t darker than mummy’s perfectly roasted chapatis, we’re okay.)

Housefull 3 might finally have answered the question of what Lisa Haydon meant by ‘I don’t want to be a career feminist’. Basically, she’s okay standing around in a film doing nothing. That is all. For real. (If she’s making a ton of money doing it and it makes her happy, then more power to her.)

Nargis Fakhri, who seems the kind of person who’d kick a disrespectful guy in the nuts in real life, is sadly doing pretty much the same as Lisa Haydon in the film – merely standing by, looking pretty. Also, and this is fact, she is possibly the worst actor to grace our screens, ever. That nobody thinks they should seriously work hard on training her before actually casting her, shows us the textbook definition of ‘objectification’.

Believe it or not, the film actually tries to give a ‘respect women’ message. Jackie Shroff – who oozes so much swag, you’d think he had a glass of Old Spice daily as a child – plays a ruthless don, who nevertheless has principles; he won’t get into the flesh trade.
He also beats up gora goons who try to do chhed-chhaad with some women in London. Then, believe it or not, he goes on to berate the three Indian men present (our heroes Akshay, Abhishek and Riteish) for not stepping in despite being desi. Sigh. So much pressure, especially considering the Indian man’s stellar track record of respecting women. (“Thanks but no thanks,” you can almost hear the women say.)

If you want entertainment, just Akshay Kumar in the frame is more than enough. His idiotic, thoroughly inaccurate ‘split personality disorder’ does lead to some inane laughs, as you watch his two personalities literally have physical fights with each other.
In one scene, the ‘nice’ Akshay, named Sandy, doesn’t want to even kiss the girl before shaadi. His rambunctious alter-ego Sundi, on the other hand, can’t wait to get into bed with her. So, while Sandy sings ‘lalla lalla lori’, Sundi responds instantly with ‘doodh ki katori’ – except, while saying that, he looks at Jacqueline and makes the universal hand sign for breasts (and headlights, if you drive on Indian roads). It is crass, but Akshay’s timing is just impeccable. That’s how you pull off offensive humour, if you must.

The film is most derogatory to the differently-abled. Akshay, Abhishek and Riteish play three men who pretend to have different disabilities at various points in the film. The number of times the word ‘normal’ is used, to denote those who don’t have anything physically wrong with their bodies, is nauseating. ‘Tum teen normal ho,’ someone thunders when their lies are discovered. You won’t feel very normal in the stomach if you’re a sensitive person, I assure you.

Why does a piece that labels itself a feminist point of view talk about racism and ableism in a film, you ask? It’s because feminism is about equality. If you talk about equality for only one section of humankind, then that’s hypocrisy.
Feminism looks to instil respect that cuts across all genders, all sexualities, all races, all castes and all other labels that look to divide people. (Jokes apart, Lisa Haydon is young, and she’ll learn more about this as she lives life and goes through experiences. Until then, everyone can just back off and practice their own version of respect and equality.)
So, is Housefull 3 humorous or offensive? It’s simple. You decide, just for yourself.

  54. Why ‘Udta’ Pahlaj should get his ears to the ground before grounding ‘Udta Punjab

    Some excerpts:

A recent study by Dr Ravinder Sandhu of Guru Nanak Dev University put the incidence of dope-related crimes in Punjab at nine times the national average. Between 1999 and 2008, such crimes registered a staggering 245 percent increase. Punjab became the state with the highest number of narcotics-related crimes, surpassing Mizoram which earlier held this dubious distinction.

Another study by the department of Social Security Development of Women and Children found that 67 percent households in Punjab have at least one person addicted to drugs. Yet another study by the Narcotics Bureau discovered that nearly 40 percent men in Punjab are hooked to drugs.

But Nihalani seems to be flying around in some sycophancy-induced frenzy. He has bought the line that his political benefactors and their allies stand to lose if drugs become a major issue in Punjab’s upcoming Assembly polls. Since the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance has failed to curb the menace, seal the border, cut-off supply lines and break the cartel of drug-peddlers, Udta Punjab, the state’s ruling elite fears, will name and shame them to their mortification in the polls

    • It’s an unfunny movie on the whole. I went to watch it just ’cause Rocky and NyKavi recommended it; and I do take their recommendations seriously. [Not blaming you guys; I caught this at a discounted rate so no worries..]

I maybe laughed for 10 minutes total in the entire movie. Some lines by Akshay and the leading-in-non-acting by the ladies are funny. Boman stands out amongst all the actors. He had ample scope to twist and jerk his face into weird contortions but restrains himself. Chunkey should stop trying to mimic a Nepali accent in each and every movie.

And this whole discussion that Abhishek is behind Riteish in this franchise is just jaundiced eyes seeing and talking. There is nothing like that in the movie. All 3 get equal footing. To an extent, Akshay gets some better comic moments. But they in particular and in the movie in general are few and far between.
Disagree with Rangan that the actors aren’t up to the mark. They have done the best they could with the insipid material. [Of course, we cannot just stop with racist jokes – can we? Sleeping with black women tends to make one’s ‘mooh kala.’ Go figure.]

This franchise needs to learn what slap-stick is from Priyadarshan. Just watch Paresh and Rajpal give you stomach-ache with their act in CHUP CHUP KE. One of THE best duo/team-comedies I have seen after HERA PHERI [You can literally switch off the movie after their mad-cap antics end.] And guess what, that was Priyan’s too! Say what one wants about Priyan, but the man IS the best when it comes to slap-stick in post-’90s Hindi industry. He fails too some times, like GARAM MASALA, DE DANA DAN, BHAGAM BHAAG, MERE BAAP PEHELE AAP. But in the ones he scores, like HUNGAMA or CHUP CHUP KE or of course HERA PHERI, he is fantastic.

Watch till the 60 minute mark..

  63. Housefull 3 should dominate the box office for the second week running in most circuits though the top release of the week TE3N may challenge in West Bengal due to the multiplexes in Kolkata. The film has content for the region so although the circuit outside Kolkata may not be great the ratio of Kolkata for West Bengal is huge to give it some numbers in that circuit.

The core markets in Central, North and Gujarat will belong to Housefull 3 which has held up well on the weekdays. If TE3N manages to do something in Kolkata then possibly Mumbai city and Bangalore can follow as that is the trend for films which over perform in Kolkata like a Kahaani or Piku.

TE3N does not have much going for it as far as most of India is concerned. The makers probably think they are being creative with the name when it could easily be named Teen which also makes it easy to understand. But thats most of the industry today they become creative with pointless stuff but when it comes to content its all limited appeal so even if this section likes the film, the footfalls still remain very low.

The eighth day is crucial for Housefull 3 also as it has done well up to now but day eight will determine if the film is an outright HIT.

However, it is rumoured that a new track on the show ‘Shakti’ will have the female protagonist being shown as someone without properly developed genitals, perhaps an intersex character. According to reliable sources, “It has been shown so far that the eldest daughter of the house is discriminated against by her father and grandmother, and is only loved by her mother. They haven’t revealed why she is hated by her family. After the show takes a time leap within a month, viewers will get to know the truth about the girl. Be it Aryan’s Graduation ceremony, Suhana’s school function, or little AbRam’s birthday; King Khan is always there by his kids’ side whenever and where ever they want him!

Recently, he took a leave from his work and flew down to London, U.K. to spend time with his son Aryan.

In a chat with a leading daily, when SRK was asked about his idea of happiness and having fun with his kids, he said, “My idea of having fun with my children is lazing on a couch, having chips and cola, and watching television. Don’t tell anyone, but there are days when we don’t even bathe.”

Adding to it he also said that because of AbRam he had to watch a cartoon film back to back for thirteen times, “I have also watched Finding Nemo (2003) thirteen times in the last five days, thanks to AbRam.”

Even after being a guiding light to his sons and daughter, he prefers to stay away from his children’s personal lives, “The conversations I have with my kids are what I would have with my friends. We chat, laugh and even grieve together. Gauri (Khan; his Wife) has all the parental conversations with them. I don’t ask my kids about their relationships.”

Further, when he was asked if his kids are interesting in acting, he said, “Suhana wants to act. And I want to say this to every child that acting is not about Bollywood. You could do theatre, television or films. It’s an interest she has and she is good. So is Aryan. Suhana likes theatre. I will be a proud father if she does well.”

  68. 24 season 2 has been long awaited by fans. The trailer for the second season is finally here and it’s quite something! We saw the trailer quite a few times and tried to analyse little bits and pieces of the same.

The trailer starts off with a very rugged looking Jai Singh Rathore. We had earlier predicted that Jai would turn into an alcoholic and we were right! Jai is an alcoholic, who has been sent to a rehab. Jai turned into an alcoholic after the death of his wife. His children are seen discussing about him and his son still blames him for the death of his mother. He has also found out that Jai has a new love interest!

The bad guys in this film are the Sherchan brothers. Roshan Sherchan, the eldest brother who is a Nepal based drug mafia is to be hanged the next day. Jai was the person who had him arrested. Roshan’s brother Arjun has taken the matter in his own hands. This time, Jai has to fight against a pathological threat. A deadly virus that can kill a man in a few hours. The virus causes flesh to melt, internal and external bleeding and skin to disintegrate! As scary as it sounds, it is not a concept that is being seen for the first time. If Roshan Sherchan isn’t released from the jail, this virus will be spread all across the city of Mumbai.

The ATU has been warned and the whole nation is in distress. On the other hand, Jai Singh Rathore has been given the job of freeing Roshan, by his brother. Jai steps into Roshan’s cell when Roshan grabs his throat, Jai tells him, “Mai tujhe yahan laya tha. Ab mai tujhe yahan se bhagaunga.”

Jai has only 6 hours to get Roshan out of the prison.

FUN FACT- Anil Kapoor has also acquired the rights for a popular international show Prison Break!

The Trailer has been shot and framed very nicely. We can see the Abhinay Deo magic being recreated in this season as well. Some of the actors are seen returning in this season and a few new faces join the show.

Three years ago, Jai Singh Rathore had put his everything on the line to save the country’s Prime Minister. This time, he faces a bigger threat. 24 hours, 24 episodes. How will Jai Singh Rathore save the country? That we will have to wait and watch!

  70. TE3N is a whodunnit that’s worth a watch

John Biswas’ (Bachchan) life is torn apart when his young granddaughter Angela Roy is kidnapped. Though Martin (Nawazuddin), the police inspector who handled the case has quit; John refuses to do so. Eight years after her disappearance, a similar kidnapping puts the spotlight back on the case. John, Martin and a new Inspector Sarita Sarkar (Vidya Balan) begin their hunt for the criminal. What is intriguing is that the modus operandi seems to be similar to the Angela case.

Based on the Korean film, Montage, Te3n is a whodunnit that is simple in its intention but clever in its execution. The disappearance of an abducted child has turned two people’s lives upside down; one is that of John and the second is that of Martin (Nawaz, who is flawless as a policeman-turned-padri seeking atonement).

With dogged determination, John makes it his life’s mission to resolve his granddaughter’s abduction and murder. Nothing will stop him—not old age, an erratic scooter or his caregiver duties to his wheelchair-bound wife. Bachchan, who recently bagged the National Award for his role as the cantankerous elder in Piku, is superlative. Having mastered every mannerism of a senior citizen, whether it is the mouth-agape expression or looking over the rim of his spectacles, his nuances are spot on. And that isn’t the only aspect of the film that is right.
