This seems to represent the JA sort of uneasy mix. The film might be mildly entertaining in the same sense. Hrithik though is an embarrassment here (not that the trailer isn’t too far behind but it’s better than him)! After the unconvincing elephants of JA we’ll get even more unconvincing leaping alligators here I suppose.. On the rest:

I fear an utterly dull but great looking film. Pretty much sums up Hrithik in a nutshell. Looks out of place. Better to stick to the candy floss stuff mate. Or make a film on Greek gods.

Actually, Gowariker is trying to fill in the gap’s which history has missed and he’s most motivated in doing that. Not much history is known about that this era and same with JA where not much details out there for Akbar and Jodha’s marriage!

Why so sure? This isn’t Jodha Akbar that Akbar starts dancing on a sufi qawwali and this is based around 2600 BC (which they changed to 2016 BC for promos) and there’s no sufism as such in that era.

Akbar has been known to be short, stocky, stout saanvla chap; at least as per available evidence ( artworks). And Hritik, was tall, lean, muscular, green-eyed, gora complexioned. No matching at all.
Now this Mohenjodaro girl in the traitor looks most unlike the little evidence available. The few paintings or statuettes ( the iconic dancing girl), reveal dark skinned ladies with hair done a certain way — and NO feathers or slit skirts.
A pattern , on the part of Gowarikar.

Even though not much is known about the period and its culture, this seems all wrong and strange. Especially the clothes and all that violence.

I dont mind Hritik as a star but never see him as an actor. The only 3 movies he made me sit up and notice acting potential were Agneepath, Luck By Chance and Lakshya. But otherwise he is someone who is a easy watch on screen specially when he is playing a character where he just needs to strut his stuff…

I think there is a reincarnation theme also somewhere buried in this mess of a trailor. What exactly are they trying here?
The cost of production here is a whopping 165 crores. This better be worth all the money. And yes, if matching talaash is the criteria for success here, then god bless the producers.

Yes, Talaash is a wonderful film. Forget the bit about the ghost story, it’s a thoughtful — even if a bit filmy — meditation on coping with personal loss. Both Aamir and Rani’s story is about coping with it in their own different way. It’s about bringing ‘closure’ to a catastrophic event in a couple’s life. At least that’s how I view it…

Good thing is Gowarikar’s movies’ promo has never initially looked brilliant. I am still mighty hopeful for a great saga here. I am not too fussy about historic authenticity.
For me this looks better than SRK’s Ashoka who in the name of being authentic make the greatest emperor of India look a bare chested romantic fool running around the creepy looking ghostly Kareena.

There is very little setting apart the setting here to Lagaan or JA. For a guy who spends time and thoroughness in regards researching the time I’m surprised in the portrayal of the backdrop, costumes etc. that look more recent then as far back as BC.
I’m also annoyed AG does not mention Swades in his “From the director of…” a far superior film to JA.
Onething I do agree with is AG promos aren’t rip-roaring, jaw dropping affairs but neither are his themes. In this sense the AR Rahman score for JA lifted the promo tremendously above the comedy of the Akbar acting.
It will be interesting to know what kind of music this film has or this age has and how ARR combats the commercial needs of a big budget film needing a big score versus the plausibility of the score in the period.
On Asoka – great music score but totally out of place for the film, hence ARR had a huge challenge here.
Rustom by default benefits usually here, a good promo for that film will increase the pressure on the battle massively.

Agree on that swades bit. I too noticed that omission.
Disagree on the Rustom bit. This movie will open bigger than rustom as this obviously looks like a crowd pleaser with all commercial elements, including a fight with a crocodile.
Rustom will benefit from a lower budget though. Actually that’s a 4 day weekend so it’s unfortunate that MD has to share screens with rustom. MD is the bigger movie in all respects and it stands to lose more due to the clash.

Gowariker’s movies usually don’t open well though. JA was rather weak in this sense even allowing for length issues and the genre and so on. After all it had a strong pair and Hrithik was coming off what is still his best year. Swades opened not that great even after Lagaan. Now I do agree that unlike both those films this seems to have more commercial elements. On the other hand I’m surprised to see much more negativity towards the trailer here than for either of those two films. All said and done if this is a somewhat entertaining film with enough of a romance angle to it it might get the family audience going. The JA trending would still be hard given the competition but also because that earlier film was sometimes busy doing a Bhansali (!) and of course had a strong lead actress. Here it’s all on hrithik. The thing though is that irrespective of how many people were interested in JA or Swades or not those seemed like respectable efforts. The worst thing people said there was the films were ‘boring’. But here if Gowariker hasn’t been careful we might be in Yaadein territory (maybe the alligators remind me of that film!). I must say I was expecting a better trailer here. oddly enough the Swades kind of aesthetic might have served him better here. Or that sort of minimalism. It’s commercially problematic of course but it would have made for a truer film. here he’s opted for a kind of Hollywood pastiche where Mohenjo Daro seems more like the bad ancient Egypt of recent Hollywood efforts than anything else. I’m not as bothered about the box office but Gowariker tries to make truer films more often than not and this doesn’t convey that sense.
On the Swades bit they always do that in these trailers. They never focus on the failures. However that is a mistake here because Swades is taken seriously by very many people (including myself). Its reputation is better than its box office result.

The trailer opens with the narrator announcing someone as the saviour of Mohenjo Daro, which manages to catch your attention. However, we lost interest pretty quickly, as the trailer rapidly proceeds and becomes something of a cross between Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), Lagaan (2001) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and some Life of Pi (2012) thrown in for good measure! The narration seems awry overall, and we cannot make head or tail of the plot except that our lead seems to be a farmer who comes to city for some reason, meets the female lead, gets into some fight and ends up leading a revolt! The entire concept is somewhat vague and confusing.
The dialogue sound average and quite modern for an ancient setting. A lot of scenes, especially the murals of the city, are let down by the poor CGI, and aren’t as impactful as they were probably intended to be. Costumes seem to range between good and confusing – and it gets simply weird with Hegde and Bedi! They seem to be influenced by the clothing worn by Red Indians and Egyptians, and we are not quite sure that they work. Hegde’s headgear and costume is clearly an imitation of Hollywood’s depiction of Cleopatra. Bedi’s headgear seems plain wrong! The only people who look “normal” and adhering to the era and culture are the villagers and Roshan – but even then we are reminded of Lagaan!
All of it definitely left us confused and dazed – and we certainly hope that the movie delivers better. However, there are some good things that we would like to point out – A.R. Rahman’s music, for one. We hear a little of it in the trailer, and it sounds promising. The sets look authentic enough, and that too is a plus point. If the action scenes in the movie are as good as the ones in the trailer, then the viewers are in for a treat!
Roshan appears to be the biggest selling point. He does look quite eye-catching in the trailer, and many may choose to watch the movie just for his power-packed performance. He has proved his mettle many times before, and the trailer gives the impression that this performance will be another feather in his cap. He commands attention in every scene! We don’t see much of Hegde in the trailer, so her acting skills can’t be commented upon. The small glimpse of Bedi, though, is enough to let us know that he will play the part of the villain to perfection!
Ashutosh Gowariker has previously directed phenomenal movies like Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar, and therefore the expectations are high from this one. Will the movie be as successful as some his earlier works? We will find out soon enough! Mohenjo Daro is coming to theatres on 12th August. The only historical authenticity of Indus Valley were the neatly rowed towns and the few seals and statuettes discovered, with a yet undecipherable script. There was no story to be told, and every archaeologist has only offered conjectures. Now we gotta see how much of Gowariker’s imagination is bought by the audience. Perhaps not much, by the looks of the trailer.

Funny part of this movie is the name – Mohanjo Daro. No one knows the real name during that era and when archealogists discovered it and all ruins and body parts then then named its like a pile of dead bodies and in Sindhi – its said as Mohanjo Daro (correct meaning: Mound of the dead men).
So, it becomes funny and ironical Hrithik saying, mujhe Mohanjo Daro jaana hai, Mohanjo Daro mera hai, Mohanjo Daro ko bachana hai., etc. 🙂
The folks living in Mohanjo Daro couldn’t call themselves as the pile of dead bodies city and hence couldn’t call their city as Mohanjo Daro.

His dance steps are so effeminate. Add the kohl, the weird dildo-horn sticking out of his turban, face paint, etc, all make him look like such a queen. Those muscles do not make him look macho anymore, he is quickly going to become a gay icon, not that I have anything against being gay.

This is a middling Rahman. I wasn’t a great fan of JA but that was overall stronger than this. The title song for instance was much more energetic than the one here. Also there are just three songs (4 if you count both versions of one song). I do however like the love song (featured in the trailer.. has the two versions on the soundtrack) a lot. Similarly the last instrumental track in the jukebox.

Wasn’t aware those swimming pools were already being built at the times of Mohenjodaro. The pool here looks as modern and equipped (fibreglass and in-built lighting) as anything you see these days.

Apex scoffed at Talaash doing 90. I told him then I’d be surprised if Mohenjo Daro does as much in absolute terms (forget adjusting for anything). Now of course there’s the Rustom competition as well though that won’t be the reason for the film not getting to such a total. He’s been avoiding the trailer threads since the very first one. With good reason. And hate to break it to him but this particular Rahman won’t drag in anyone if they otherwise weren’t going to watch the movie.
More seriously though and while I’m no fan of JA I thought this film would more or less be like the latter. But this looks like a terrible joke in just about every sense. And it’s a strange lineup for Hrithik. The Gupta film too is hardly the safest. Typically Gupta opens well (in the best case scenario) and then fizzles out. The subject of the current film is again a bit ‘weird’. Plus there is the Raees competition (if this holds). Hrithik might be looking at two back to back very significant failures.
The big winner with the Mohenjo Daro clash is Rustom. However good or not the film is on its own it will look even better in comparison.
On another note the Rahman soundtrack is a clue because he rarely wastes good soundtracks on less than credible films. This isn’t about hits/flops but the ‘serious’. He had an excellent soundtrack for Swades, a more than decent one for JA. Lagaan goes without saying. The Mohenjo Daro one is easily his weakest (though I still like one of the songs here a fair bit).

I think Hrithik is just suited to non-serious roles that don’t require acting, where his body/looks are canvased much like his dancing moves. He suits the glamour roles of Dhoom franchise/Bang Bang or lover-boy roles (even here he struggles as he is a profound hammerer) or the mulitplex roles like ZMNB. But the kind of thing AG requires I doubt anyone can really do because its just too dry and soul sucking stuff. I imagine no would really have fun at it as it’s a major history listen on topics where little is known so most the time is spent scratching round & researching the era rather than pulling a script together. The more & more I feel Lagaan was just pure luck for him & gives him unnecessary mileage to bore us more & more.
If this fails I doubt he’ll get a big film with a big star, he’ll need to go the Bhansali way & recruit a younger star. All his films generally did not have a leading actress except JA which is a big risk in projects like this, newcomers pretty much in Lagaan, Swades & now this (his big canvas films). Bhansali been smarter always used Aishwariya or Rani or Deepika.

Make Jaadu appear in the film…make the connection to Koi Mil Gaya and everything will make perfect sense then. As things stand right now, the presence of Jaadu in the film can only be considered mildly surprising! He’ll be just one amongst the multiple ‘alien’ elements integrated into the script by Gowarikar…

The pronunciation of Mohenjodaro itself is incorrect. There is no voluble ‘H’, rather it is Mo (o)ven jo daro.
But as discussed earlier, the name was given to this place after the ruins were discovered. It is highly doubtful that the name which literally translates as “Mound (or gate) of the Dead”, could be the actual name that the natives used,
And here they are dancing around chanting “mound of the dead, mound of the dead, mound of the dead, yeeahhh..” !!

“Mound (or gate) of the Dead” I think mound is apt ( and not gate) as it refers to pile or heap (of dead men) as mostly this was discovered above the surface level which they digged/excavate to see the complete hidden city.

Scathing first review of Kabali!
Someone posted Rajinikanth’s Kabali review online and the world is going crazy
For a casual cinema goer though, the whole shindig will feel thoroughly artificial and unbearable. The aged star with heavy makeup trying to act as a 30 year old is cringe-worthy. For someone who in real life has shied away from any responsibility, has acted without any consistency in politics, a person who has never stood up to his beliefs (he appreciated Jayalalitha getting out of prison for the case that he railed against her in ’96!), Rajinikanth again doing the act of the mass leader and people’s savior is laughable. The real life Rajini can do no right except to kindle talks about his entry into politics. But movie after movie, he does his act, and it is getting a bit long on the tooth.

the question of course is whether this film is more of a ‘narrative’ than most of the Rajni films we’ve been used to for 20-25 years at this point and therefore does it hearken back to an older (younger!) star in this sense who did masala of course but where it wasn’t necessarily a Rajni circus. If the latter I’d welcome it though it would be interesting to see how the audience ultimately takes to it. Otherwise I certainly believe that he’s reached a certain ‘end’ with Shankar. It’s not possible to take that kind of over the top image any further. It’s become its own caricature for very long and it was part of Shankar’s brilliance to make that ‘caricature’ if you will very effective as a robotic double.

Possibly the guy is in Bay area where chances of someone attacking is negligible or just for fun like JayShah did with fake Taran review of Rab ne Bana Di Jodi.

It obviously sounded fake when the reviewer started talking of Jayalalitha and shite when it just doesn’t have anything to do with the film…

The title sing is unintentionally hilarious. Fearing the worst here for AG. It does look like a debacle coming up.
If the movie doesn’t work, surely Hrithik will bounce back with something more commercial or the next one in the Krish franchise. But it may spell the end for AG. It’s a pity when you remember the guy delivered us Lagaan.
Coming to think of it, his filmography looks really like a long lean spell if it were not for Lagaan.
Pehla Nasha was a disastrous copy of Body Double. Baazi was a poor attempt of an action movie. Forget Die Hard 2 from which the climax was lifted from, forget the likes of Ghatak, Mohra, Ziddi of that time, it looked B-Grade compared to the Sunil Shetty actioners back then. He tried to make Aamir look like macho, tough cop to then dress him up as a lady and dance to seduce the villain. Aamir must be embarassed to look at that these days.
Swades and KHJJS were decent movies but duds at the BO. JA was underwhelming but it did alright. Still, nothing shout about from roof-tops.
Sums up AG’s career but for Lagaan.

Saw this and other Ashutosh and Hrithik interviews. Feeling to give this movie a chance.. and Ashu is really happy and relieved with this movie, so it could be the difference!

Have not followed this movie and neither seen promos/ interviews / music etc….I am always averse to Rahman kind of music anyway so no interest there too….but looking at the scale / budget of the movie, choice of Hrithik may be intentional or purposeful as don’t see him fitting in this kind of setting giving his debonair / urbane looks.
May be this is a time travel concept or something on those lines where he travels to an arbitrary point in time…..that may change the whole outlook.

So there is another clash of major releases happening in Bollywood and it seems both the sides are a bit nervous about it, though they are not showing it.
However, our popular superstar has begun promoting only one of these films (say ‘A’), leaving the members of film (say ‘B’) miffed.
The lead star of ‘B’ is thus cross as he thinks the superstar is promoting ‘A’ only because he does not want ‘B’ to succeed.
He has a point there, as this is the first time ever that the superstar is promoting any film of the actor ‘A’. Moreover, the superstar and the lead star of ‘B’ have had some misunderstandings in the past, which perhaps made it easier for the superstar to choose the film of his choice – that is ‘A’.

Day 1 of Rustom prediction – 8 to 12 cr (A higher range here as I feel the movie can do better than expected as it has clearly more buzz than MD but not enough theatres)

Ranveer, Salman, Karan promote Akshay’s Rustom, but Hrithik’s Mohenjo Daro gets no love?
While Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar and Salman Khan have showered love on Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film Rustom, Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro has got no such endorsement from B-Town.
But how come there’s no love coming Hrithik Roshan’s film Mohenjo Daro’s way? Roshan after all is making a comeback of sorts after a gap of two years on the silver screen with Ashutosh Gowariker’s film? With 8 days to go for the the release of the two films, it looks like the scales are tilted in Kumar’s favour as of now.
Both Rustom and Mohenjo Daro are period films. While Rustom is based on the infamous KM Nanavati case of 1958, Mohenjo Daro is an epic romance set during the times of the Indus Valley Civilisation.

I think between Salman and Hrithik there is some history of antagonism. Remember Salman’s joke about the mosquito and Guzaarish. Or maybe it was directed more at SLB or Aishwarya.
I think the support for Rustom is also coming from better marketing. It is the smaller movie but the PR process around the movie has been quite good. There are positive vibes around it. Akshay Kumar has also had 2 successful movies already this year.
Rustom also gives the feel of his better movies (it looks more like a Neeraj andey or Airliff kind of deal) than his standard comedies.
The trailer of Rustom seems to have made a better impact. The theme also seems to interest people more than a historical.
Mohenjodaro has the burden of the huge budget. Hrithik and AG have more to lose. It’s been a while since they’ve delivered a hit. They seem to be under more pressure.
M is the big one here but Rustom does look like the underdog that may end up creating a huge upset. Remember BM against Dilwale.
I think the support from the industry also comes from Akshay Kumar having lots of friends and enjoying some goodwill. From a few reports I’ve seen lately Hrithik has turned into a bit of a loner lately. He is reported to not really socialise much with the colleagues.
He is a bit of a recluse right now. It is said that the lack of support from his colleagues in the Kangana affair has made him distance himself from them.
That said, if Mohenjodaro is well made, it has good chances to build on a decent initial. If the movie isn’t gripping enough, expect it to fizzle out quickly like Dilwale and Rustom to catch up and overtake it.
