M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story has taken an excellent opening of around 45-50% and is one of th best of openings of the year. The film had no face value and the music also did not take off but brand Dhoni has worked for the film in a big way. There is huge curiosity among the audience to see the life story of Dhoni who is a very popular figure today unlike other biopics which mainly were about people from the past. This has reflected in an initial which could never have even been imagined with the film industry names involved in the film. The initial across all multiplexes in India is fantastic and the single screen opening is also pretty good. Though single screens have minimal shows before noon and it will be noon shows that will really tell about the single screen opening.

Normally if a film with this cast had opened at this level it would be a blockbuster on day one but the costs of the film are very high due to the involvement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the film so despite this great start there is a lot of work for the film to do. The youth at multiplexes has come out in a big way this morning as Dhoni is a youth icon but looking at the theatrical trailer it does look a film more for families than the youth. It will be a very interesting weekend as to how this film plans out as the this big initial has come due to an external factor and now is the film good enough to hold this large audience which has come out on day one.

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story has taken the second best initial of year after Sultan. The film is even better than the Shahrukh Khan starrer Fan which came on a partial holiday in terms of occupancy. There is a difference in the number of screenings as Fan was a 140 minute plus film while M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story is at 180 minutes plus. Still barring Sultan which had a bumper initial (the only one of the year) it is still considerably ahead of the rest in terms of ocupancy though that long running time will have an affect on collections. The best initials on the morning of release in 2016 till date are as follows.

    1. Sultan – 70% (4350 Screens)

    2. M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story (3800 screens) – 50% (Hindi)

    3. Fan – 42.5% (3400 Screens)

    4. Rustom – 40% (2350 screens)

    5. Baaghi – 37.5% (2700 Screens)

    6. Housefull 3 – 32.5% (3600 Screens)

    7. Dishoom – 30% (3000 screens)

    8. Airlift – 27.5% (2000 Screens)

    9. Mohenjo Daro- 25% (2700 screens)

    10. Udta Punjab – 25% (2200 screens)

Note – These occupancy are for morning shows before noon only and do not reflect how the final day will end up as the trend is sometimes different in the evening. If the occupancy is the same then it is differentiated by the screen count with the higher screen count given benefit.

  4. Actor Salman Khan is brutally honest when it comes to sharing his views on any topic. So when he was in Delhi recently, he was more than prepared to take questions on the recent Uri attacks in Kashmir, subsequent surgical attacks from India and the debate on banning Pakistani artists in Bollywood films.

Reacting on the recent surgical strike on Pakistan, Khan says, “Ideal situation would have been love and peace, but now it has happened, so obviously it was a reaction to some people’s action. In this day and age, I feel handling things with love and peace would have been better, especially for common people. But after Uri attacks, it seems (like) proper action because they were terrorists.”

At a time when the entire nation is debating on whether Pakistani artists should be sent back to their country, Khan shares a different opinion. “They are artists. We have killed the terrorists. Artists are not terrorists. These are two different subjects. They come to our country after acquiring visa, and it’s our government who allows them with the work permit in our country.”

  5. Saw MSD FDZS (First Day Zero show) – 8:30 am show. It was 40% occupied – GOLD class.

Movie is very good in first half. 4/5
Movie is above average in 2nd half. 3/5

Overall 4/5 as a fan; but frankly it is 3/5 movie.

Despite this, the movie will be a blockbuster. Neeraj Pandey and Sushant are very good. Dhoni’s struggle and love stories are well handled.

Screenplay weakens in the second part because it doesn’t reveal Dhoni’s astute captaincy strategies which was needed to create that WoW factor. Probably this was not added as Dhoni is still playing and his strategies hence cannot be revealed now, which can be still relevant.

Go for it guys. There are several whistle moments. 🙂

But I thought he is not having a movie release so there won’t be any fingering from the media so he can be at peace.

Though he gets full marks for guts and speaking his mind, but why speak out of turn when all the heroes of bollywood are quiet and in line and not taking any stand.

I think his reaction on paper is simple and logical but media needs trp and it is getting blown out of proportions again and there is no one better than sallu at the moment to give them headlines. He did blame Pak by saying it was a reaction to action and there is nothing wrong in saying that an ideal situation would have been love and peace.

His father put up a good tweet few days back and reply to Nawaz Shareef and calling him Be-Nawaz Sharir !!

But still Salman should have remained silent and why open your gab at the wrong time when whole of bollywood has gone into their rat hole.

    Excerpts and Spoilers

Playing one of the most famous men in the country, Sushant Singh Rajput doesn’t put a foot wrong. Literally. Right from that walk, his body language as Dhoni is immaculate, and he nails everything: the swagger, the trademark shots, the oddly effete nail-biting manner.

These slavish Dhoni imitations are superlative enough, but Rajput — an accomplished and restrained performer — fleshes out this character of superhuman perfection and turns him into someone real, someone worth believing in and cheering for.

It is only Rajput’s valiant performance that keeps us believing, especially as he stands in front of a mirror and self-consciously practices precisely how wide his grin needs to be.

In a bright move, the film uses a lot of actual television footage, ForrestGumping Rajput’s face on Dhoni’s body and letting him advise Lakshmipathy Balaji and celebrate with Harbhajan Singh instead of casting lookalikes for these parts we know so well.

The first time we see Sachin Tendulkar, for example, the film gives him what is sometimes (and fittingly) referred to as God’s View, turning the narrative camera into the Sachin character and letting Dhoni walk up to him for an autograph. It’s quite a moment.

That, in fact, is part of a greater moment, a scene where a pretty girl meets Dhoni on a flight and — while awestruck by other cricketers — thinks nothing of MS, who she doesn’t yet know.

Make no mistake — all the screaming and shouting that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, for instance, and the Shiv Sena, does on this issue is not very different from KJo’s interviews on films being a ‘soft target’ — they are both designed to get films, and the respective political parties, free publicity.

In reality, it is neither unfair, nor unjust to stir up a citizen’s boycott of goods, services and products coming from a nation that uses terror as state policy.

Such boycott is not new. Let us turn the pages and look, for instance, at South Africa during the apartheid era. In 1959, a group of South Africans in exile created what later became a global movement to boycott goods and services, and in time even sporting teams, from South Africa ruled by an apartheid-enforcing government. The AAM (Anti-Apartheid Movement) had its first victory when it forced South Africa to leave the Commonwealth in 1961 after extensive lobbying with countries like India, Canada and other African countries — many of them newly independent.

  15. MS Dhoni: watch it for excellent first half.(spoilers)

Sushant Singh is a revelation as the title character, but the movie doesn’t feel wholesome. The first half is excellent and narrates the frustrations of the young dhoni brilliantly and in good detail.

But the second half felt more like tick marks of what is required to be there in the movie. The movie touches moments of Dhoni more as a highlight reel. We don’t get to know about the captain, about what he does after his girlfriend passes away, how he changed the team into his own vision.

The film though I admit is great to watch, but in climax it doesn’t offer more than what we know! We don’t get to know characters of Indian team in the second half properly. We only see Dhoni highlight reel! Though the audience loved the movie and the movie shall be a blockbuster, but as a movie on MS Dhoni, it disappoints for lack of depth.

Also normally when such movies end, you get to know what are the characters doing today, but we don’t get that.

Also lack of depth is so visible, that when Dhoni decides to drop some old senior players, they are not even named!

How did the boy from Ranchi became the maverick captain, we fail to know it. The movie also may be because the length (or a sequel) controversial issues like the banned Chennai Superkings. We don’t even know the relationship between the Captain and his players, like there is no speech before the world cup final! There are no interactions with the Coach. There are tactical and strategic brilliance demonstrated! How he improves himself as a player after coming to International Cricket… lot to be desired.

The movie left to be desired, but a great one time watch. It shall take pandey’s career forward and so to for the lead actor.

Watch it for the great first half, and to relive India’s World Cup 2011 triiumph!

    • Also lack of depth is so visible, that when Dhoni decides to drop some old senior players, they are not even named!

Google’s your (and my) friend. I think it was a wise decision. The film didn’t have to be controversial for controversy’s sake. The point was to show that Dhoni did make the recommendation to drop certain players based on fitness, and that he wasn’t a puppet or a rubber stamp. That point was well made, without degrading any other international cricketer.

How did the boy from Ranchi became the maverick captain, we fail to know it. The movie also may be because the length (or a sequel) controversial issues like the banned Chennai Superkings. In the end, it’s a movie — a masala movie at that. It highlights what is deemed essential to elicit an emotional response from the audience; nothing more, nothing less. It’s not a documentary — and that is the key point while watching this film. Forget the finer nuances that only weird sports enthusiasts care about (I’ll definitely count myself as one!), it’s a film for the masses. And where it succeeds, it succeeds well.

      • Yeah completely agreed, hence I said it shall be a blockbuster! But as a sports enthusiast and a guy who likes a bit more details I was disappointed.

The atmosphere in the cinema hall is electric during key moments of career like his first Indian Shirt, World Cup final! Etc.. the movie as masala movie shall break all records!

      • Regarding using the Google is not a problem! Mostly I know the names too I guess. But the issue is one needs to know what was wrong why the Indian team failed prior to that, may not be in wholesome details but a bit more reference would have helped and made it more classy as well as massy.

We never get the team talk, how the great leader addressed his team. He is suppose to be a great leader and on tactician in the game of cricket, so knowing how he handled certain difficult games or situation might have made the movie more enriched experience.

That’s my two cents. But yeah I did enjoy the movie, but I could have enjoyed it more. It could have been a classic, which it might fail at.

  16. M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story Has Huge First Day
    Friday 30 September 2016 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story has had an excellent first day with collections set to be around 20-21 crore nett as per early estimates in the Hindi version. There is a dubbed version in Tamil and Telugu and that has also done very well. It is likely to be the second highest opening of the year behind Sultan (36.59 crore) but beating Fan (19.07 crore) and also the likes of Housefull 3 and Rustom by big margins. The collections of the film are also likely to come among the top fifteen opening days ever and as far as non holidays go it will be in fifth or sixth place. The public especially the youth have come in a big way on the opening day across the country. The multiplex business is fantastic while single screens have also performed well.

The film has under performed slightly in the North compared to a Mumbai and South and that could be due to the cast as the Delhi and Punjab belts tend to open better with a big star or if its local content. Brand Dhoni has given the film a blockbuster start and now its about can the film hold which will take the film to safety despite the high cost. It will be interesting to see what happens over the weekend as never before has a film taken such a big opening on an external factor (Brand Dhoni) and with the cast being so weak. The theatrical was also good which gave it a further boost and now remains to be seen if the expectations created have been matched by the film and that will be known over the next few days.

Structured around the most iconic event etched in Indian minds, the film does full justice to Dhoni’s journey — from a rare talent born in the hinterlands, to his struggles, and his eventual rise in the cordons of Indian cricket. It’s a total paisa vasool film.

    Absolutely loved it…

Obviously Dhoni is the star but no one would have bet on such a wide & strong opening. It felt like a niche film on conception…but now is set to be the or could be #2 grosser of year. Seems he has truly been immortalised on screen!

  18. Back from MS Dhoni. This movie has hit all the right notes for a biopic and more importantly to track the journey of one of the cricketing legends. The title(The untold story) is very smart as the movie just showcases the ‘untold’ part of MS’s life. All the obvious stuff, cricket applauds, captaincy applauds, controversies are smartly ignored with hints of it here and there. The movie is completely about Dhoni when he’s not on the cricket ground and how normal (or sub-normal) conditions he faced and came up all the way up to live his dream. There is lot of emphasis (assuming from MS himself) that inspite having great talent.. how much his support system was there all throughout to support from his family/friends/school coach, local coach, etc all form an important part in this struggle. His family was never expecting him to make it to Nationals and expecting him to get a permanent job and settle down. Overall the struggles are captured very well and that’s the USP of the movie.

As mentioned in interviews, MS himself was very cautious to not project himself as a superhero sorts and that earthy charm and believable character has been retained all throughout.

Sushant Singh Rajput is literally Dhoni and casting him is the masterstroke for this biopic. The amount of dedication, earnestness he brought to the role is impeccable. This is already a shining glory in his short career and will remain so all throughout his life. Leadings ladies are fine and good to on screen. The background songs, love story even though remains inconsequential to the movie but is important to add to the journey of MS. Neeraj Pandey’s direction is good but the screenplay could have been tighter but I also understand that if you are touching highlights of a person, it never looks like tight screenplay and it appears to have been designed it that way. So, no complaints but the 3 hours length will be detrimental to audience and repeat value will take nosedive. But still this movie will be remembered for long and Dhoni’s life has been captured on celluloid without missing much and that’s always a good thing. It would be incorrect to sacrifice lot of stuff just to appease the current boxoffice phase and deleting scenes. If you make the journey, better make it complete and well and not look to make this quick money making machine.

Overall RECOMMENDED, it will easily do over 125 crores in Hindi which is incredible!

While the latter called it a publicity stunt, senior actor Prem Chopra too has come out in support of the show. The most loved villain of Bollywood asserted that this indeed was a publicity stunt as she might have taken up a social cause against racism and may have chosen the opportunity for publicity. He said that the show’s content is in good faith. Giving an example, he said that even Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan make jokes about themselves and one has to learn to laugh at oneself. He also added that despite jokes being cracked about his baldness, he takes them in his stride. He asserted that the show is not about laughing at people, but laughing with them and if you cannot take a joke, you should not go on such a show.

  22. This film had potential to present us with the recent Indian cricketing story, warts and all. Sadly it’s more hagiography than biography: the cricketer is reduced to a being singing-romancing Bollywood hero rather than a top-flight cricketer, a master strategist, and a captain who led from the front. True champions have that edge that no one else does: on that score, the real-life Dhoni hits it out of the park, every single time. Too bad the reel Dhoni gets stumped just when he is getting started.

  23. It’s this unfussy, matter-of-fact portrayal that makes his personal story ring severely true for millions of lives, especially in mofussil India. The dreams and desires trying hard to take wings in the cramped but homely quarter number 142 of Mecon Limited in Ranchi would reverberate with any lower middle class home. Where the father always chides the kids to study lest they turn out like him—low in stature, where mother is always the mediator and children themselves want much more out of life than what they have been granted. It’s the genuineness of the characters in the background which adds to Sushant’s performance at the centre—be it Anupam Kher as his reticent father, or Rajesh Sharma as quirky coach Banerjee.

The film has a terrific sense of place—the many stadiums in small towns, the coal mines, the railway stations. Pandey lets in the details unobtrusively, has some fine little heartwarming touches. The romantic interludes, seemingly unnecessary eventually tot up Dhoni’s heroism—stealing a moment away to come to terms with an intensely private grief, stealthily finding time for love in the glare of media and public eye.

The film catches the game at the grassroots—but instead of the usual portrayal of bureaucratic stranglehold what you see is an unquestioning commitment and passion for the game in the many officials. In a way, the film then becomes a piece of nostalgia, harking back to the innocent days of cricket. It would have been interesting to see Dhoni’s engagement with what it has become over the years—a world of big money and bigger misdemeanours. However, the film lets him remain in an idealistic bubble. Even when he is shown endorsing one product after another (which obviously doubles up as in-film brand promotion) it does so with a sense of indulgence; the whole sequence playing out like a burlesque of sorts.

Pandey could have come all the way up to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-finals in which we lost but then the film wouldn’t have remained the soaring biopic that it is now. To begin and end with the 2011 finals with the breathtaking top shots of Wankhede, pulsating with the cries of “Indiyaaah Indiyaah”, and Mahi hitting a glorious six to victory—till date the scene seems to have the ability to make even grown up men and women cry. I saw a lot of wet eyes in the theatre. But to Pandey’s credit he also forces a few tears to be dropped for the supporting cast of Dhoni’s life—not just the family and friends but the faceless, selfless supporters who left everything behind to watch him hit the ball—“Mahi maar raha hai”. He seems to have hit yet another six with the film.

The collections over fifteen days are similar to Neerja despite that film getting tax exemptions. Neerja had an all India GROSS of of 90 crore and Pink is likely to go to 93 crore but the NETT collections will stay a few crore short of Neerja. The business of Pink till date is as follows.

    Box Office India Trade Network

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story had a huge first day grossing around 20 crore nett in Hindi making it the second highest opening day of the year. The film did phenomenally well over due though the under performance came in North India where the cast factor probably came into play. The film has done fantastic business in Mumbai and South while the Central India markets (Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI) also contributed very well due to the small town fell of the film. The cricket factor aided the film in markets like Mysore and West Bengal. The film is Mysore has collected almost the same as what it has in Delhi city and East Punjab while for a film a like Sultan the numbers are double in Delhi city and East Punjab as compared to Mysore. East Punjab had a Punjabi film for competition which has done well.

The Dhoni brand and the theatrical having a very earthy and Indian feel to it has contributed to this huge first day number and now the film just has to hold at these levels to be a big success. The film can probably afford to even have a drop on day two but that will hit the trend of the film which will hurt the eventual lifetime total of the film. If the film was to go up on Saturday then the film will be able to go anywhere considering the limited number of major releases till Diwali. Never has a film with no face value and so so music taken such an initial in recent times, the theatrical was good which suggested a good opening but brand Dhoni took it to another level all together.

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story grossed around 6.50 crore nett in Mumbai, 3.50 crore nett in Delhi /UP, 1.65 crore nett in East Punjab and 1.55 crore nett in Mysore. Barring Delhi / UP, East Punjab, West Bengal, the figures were the second highest of the year in all other circuits.

    Box Office India Trade Network

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story has taken the 15th highest opening of all time and all the films above it are all cast films. In terms of non holidays there are five films above it and they are Dhoom 3, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK, Kick and Dilwale making it the sixth highest non holiday opening day. The Dhoni factor has overridden the cast factor as far as box office is concerned and that too by a huge margin. The top opening days of all time are as follows..

  30. Flashback: Rang De Basanti was supposed to end differently; know what changed the director’s mind

The 2006 movie ‘Rang De Basanti’, which connected with the youth of the country in ways beyond explanation, was supposed to end differently. The last scene showed actors Aamir Khan and Sidharth laughing it off till their last breaths, but director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra said he ended the climax a week before release.

During an interview to a leading daily, Rakeysh revealed that the original climax was to have the funeral of Aamir and Sidharth’s character. Rakeysh said that before the movie’s release on Republic day, he showed the movie to young audience and they kept asking why the boys had to die.

This troubled Rakyesh because he couldn’t understand why they are failing to understand his vision. So on the night of January 19, he called up his friends in media and asked them to lend him crew. On getting what he wanted, Rakeysh went to Bangalore Engineering College and announced that few students had taken over the All India Radio (AIR) station and commandos had surrounded them. He said he wanted raw reactions of the students.

“Twenty minutes later when I confessed that I was shooting footage for a movie, they continued with the discussion. And I realised my mistake… I’d lit a fire but not allowed it to spread,” Mehra reportedly said.

The director then continued the process in eight cities and shot for about 4-5 days. He said he was certain that the boys had to die but chose against showing the funeral. Instead, he settled for live reactions from across the country. He said the bodies were not riddled with bullets and their laughs stayed in the penultimate shot.

“I replaced the last scene of a procession of 2000 students carrying their dead bodies with them running jumping and frolicking, on their way to a meeting with the young Bhagat Singh,” he added.
He said that just like Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan and Rajguru; his heroes were immortal too. Since there was no time to show the climax to anyone Rakeysh went with his instinct.

“Lucky for me, the audience understood,” he chuckled.

    • The climax worked for me. I know not all agree with the message and politics about the film. But for me, the climax at the radio station, the song ‘Rubaru’, the heroes embracing death laughing and becoming immortal were the high points of the film.

As Cold War-era foes Pakistan and Russia started ‘Friendship 2016’, the first-ever joint military exercises between the two countries, India’s relationship status with its long-term ally, Moscow, shifted from the officially declared ‘special and privileged strategic partnership’ to ‘complicated’.

Coming days after the Uri terror attack, in which 18 Indian soldiers were killed, the only saving grace for New Delhi was that Russia agreed to cancel one leg of the fortnight-long training drill—in the heights of Rattu in Gilgit-Baltistan, part of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)—and hold the exercises only at Cherat in Nowshera district, in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The fact that Russia had issued perhaps the strongest statement following the Uri attacks, naming Pakistan, began to pale as its troops landed in Rawalpindi—that too for what was billed as joint counter-terrorism exercises.
It was all about the timing. At a time when India was making an all-out effort to isolate Pakistan in the global arena as the fountainhead of terrorism in the region, Russia went ahead with the joint exercises despite the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) having communicated India’s misgivings to Moscow. While India would have expected its oldest ally and “best friend” to take a position against Pakistan—and help India’s cause of making it an international pariah—Moscow’s unstated message to New Delhi was that the warm historic ties between the two countries did not mean anything could be taken for granted.

That Russia didn’t cancel the exercise post-Uri implies its willingness to put a finger on an old Indian wound.
What exactly does this set of events signify? Has Russia managed to confer on Pakistan greater ‘strategic depth’ in the region—that much-cherished goal of the Rawalpindi brains trust? Has India lost a trusted ally of over half-a-century—or at least partly forfeited the natural claim it made on its support? Has New Delhi’s increased proximity to one superpower set in motion a rearrangement of the tectonic plates in another hemisphere? After all, even a limited compact between China and Russia, with Pakistan as a staging post, means the world map suddenly looks different for New Delhi.

  32. Again in response at least partly to some of this discussion Bachchan had his own views (see 3105 on his blog) and I once again responded this way:

[There is the popular political action and then there is the successful one. It’s a bit like the movies where the biggest hits are not always the best films and vice versa. Put differently a popular course of action or a political winner is not exactly the same as good policy. The latter is that which seeks to solve the problem it addresses. Now I’m not naive about this. All successful politics also has the element of grandstanding linked to it. Unfortunately sometimes decisions on war and peace are linked to this sort of theater. Here’s what my reading would be. A difficult summer in Kashmir, building on a longer perception that perhaps things haven’t been so radically different with the new dispensation in Delhi with respect to Pakistan, that it’s the same old one step forward two steps back, that one either stands duped or revealed as weak or both. All kinds of statements, all kinds of action, even responsible behavior shown at this level and yet all this does is lay one open to the charge that one has been just like the older govt. The exact same thing applies to Kashmir and the decisions made in this regard. At some point things reach a boiling point. Not the boiling point of ‘tolerance’ but one of public opinion. There comes that one triggering element where it becomes necessary and expedient to do ‘something’. And this course of action addresses several things at once The action becomes an end-in-itself. It provides a sense of satisfaction and release for many. People who are no clearer today than they were yesterday about what’s going to happen going forward and who probably know in their heart of hearts that nothing will change but who evidently believe that this sort of action means something. But there are so many parts of the world including this LoC where even hostile action on a regular basis doesn’t lead to any permanent result. One could easily envisage a cycle where such strikes are routinely carried out and become part of the overall ‘economy’ of the situation. This doesn’t mean one should do nothing. But whether this ‘something’ is anything more than a ‘feel good’ moment is questionable. It makes those in charge seem tough, it provides a cathartic moment for the nation, I’d even say there is the cynicism of politics mixed into all of this as the action also distracts from some other things including Kashmir. No nation is innocent in this sense when it comes to making war and peace decisions that have political cynicism mixed in but no nation of course ever admits to the same which includes the citizens of every nation always convinced about the purity of their ‘national’ intentions. Again if one is interested in the ‘truth’ this truth does not lie with labels. It does not lie on the side of big words like ‘culture’ and ‘tradition’ and ‘religion’ and ‘nation’ and so on. In fact the very opposite is true. These are often labels that make the ‘lie’ digestible. I am paraphrasing a quote on religion about how without religion good people would still do good things and bad people bad things but only religion is able to make good people do bad things. Any ‘master-word’ like ‘God’ or ‘nation’ or ‘culture’ or ‘values’ or whatever allows one to engage in a level of violence (not always of the literal kind) with a justifying narrative attached to it and therefore with a degree of legitimacy. You can accuse women of a lot of things if the ‘truth’ of ‘culture’ suggests that women who think and act in certain ways are always ‘guilty’ of something, always ‘guilty’ of whatever happens to them. ‘How do you expect people to react?’ was I thought more or less the question of the prosecutor in Pink. To challenge the violence of these narratives one often has to go against the great force of these master-word narratives, one has to go against great emotion that these same words nurture and produce over long periods of time. Once again the ‘truth’ isn’t dependent on such labels. The only truth worth fighting for (I choose these words with care) is that which challenges such labels. I’d again get back to some privileged examples. The same outrage or anger is never produced by the nation, the same emotion never experienced by its citizens when outrages on life and liberty are routinely conducted and on an epic scale on a weakly basis within the nation. These are news events, upsetting for one side or the other but these also quickly become ideological fights. Those who side with one state or another in a water dispute, one caste or another in a large group being butchered, one religion or another in a massive riot or pogrom. What happens to ‘universal’ outrage or emotion then? Because again depending on the label you relate yourself to you ‘produce’ your truth accordingly. When it’s about matters of war suddenly everyone can believe in the same nation. But even this is a narrative. Do we ‘poll’ people on this? Everyone? Recall that mother sleeping under that bridge with her children? Struggling to feed herself and them, struggling not to get sexually assaulted. Then there is ‘saare jahan se achcha…’ playing in the background. Do you think those ‘citizens’ of India are national warriors? Has one ever asked them what they believe about their nation? Does one wonder what people (and in India this is an absolutely massive percentage) who lead lives compared to which the lives of that woman and children I’ve just described from a film are absolutely romantic ones think about all of this? Have there ever even been invested in the ‘nation’, this great label when they have known nothing but misery and abuse in the same? We always think our security is under threat from our national neighbors and that’s not untrue but there are so many who are much more insecure in their own nation not just because of their own compatriots but because there is a political or cultural or bureaucratic or legal or ……. system that enshrines a certain kind of violence. They suffer systematically for systemic reasons. The discourse on ‘national pride’ is always a story that leaves out such inconvenient truths. Much as there is a discourse on progress or freedom that leaves out the inconvenient truth that even when they come from privilege women are subjected to very different standards. Why bring this up at all in another film? What is your solution? That people just stop thinking that way? Fancy that.. such naivety..! I will only have been similarly naive… And what solution does a critic like myself have? Not much of one actually. Because I cannot make a film that reaches millions of people, I do not have a public name so that my words can have a similar sort of impact. The only thing I can do in my minuscule way is to offer my voice to the 5 people willing to listen in any given context. Perhaps I will convince one or two. That is still a number great than zero. What solutions might I have? Here I must admit I will rely on a certain line of thought according to which questions framed a certain way are already answers. Or put differently there isn’t an answer that carries with it the guarantee of greater truth. The only thing that one can keep bringing to the table is the vigilance of constantly questioning. Not to simply be a pest but to question that in every situation which is simply assumed to be the truth because one has been taught to believe this by some of the very same labels. To get to the very specific situation here could there have been another course of action? Yes. I could think of some possibilities. But is it even necessary to offer these? How hard is it to glibly state alternative responses? But that doesn’t constitute the heart of my critique. Much as one could tell a story about how certain things shouldn’t happen to women and move a lot of people without having offered any solution as such or at least a practical one that could be put into effect immediately? But isn’t the message itself in this sense part of the solution? One might protest that matters of war and peace require more urgency? I actually think that when women are humiliated and/or grievously assaulted on a daily basis that too is some sort of emergency. So yes one can ask for alternative solutions but one cannot do so selectively. I don’t hold it against Pink that no immediately implementable solutions were offered. One always suggests again glibly that it is not the function of a film to effectuate policy but that’s not the correct answer. Anything that makes people think seriously on a subject is worthwhile. But even following that line of thought or accepting that excuse what if I had a similar one? That it is not my job to provide alternative policies. After all how could it be that the bar is higher on a ‘nobody’ like me versus those who produce and enable a powerful social vehicle (a film) that engages with vast numbers of people? But still I do have alternatives in mind. A more severe economic blockade over time is often a more effective instrument. There are other possibilities related to political fora around the world, some of which are of course being explored currently. I am not even completely against strikes. But I wonder about the sound policy behind these particular ones. In any case all these possible alternatives are not to my mind the heart of the matter. And one engaging in or supporting questionable action can question one’s questioner in all sorts of ways (perhaps justifiably) but one has not thereby offered a better justification for one’s beliefs. It is also completely inadequate to state that there are things one can say publicly and there are beliefs one holds privately. There is greater responsibility on one precisely when there is a gap between the two. And one shouldn’t always have this alibi where one comes up with easy pronouncements publicly but keeps providing the assurance that one’s beliefs might otherwise be measured and so on. What if the defense counsel were to say the same in the movie? Sorry I can’t defend you. I do accept everything you’re saying. I am even disgusted by what happened but publicly I must support my culture (I probably even believe in it). But don’t blame me because you don’t know what I feel deep inside.

I can’t add anything more.. except to say a poet who dropped his name might have argued with you…]

    • [I should just add one more thing here. The ‘ban’ is of course a producer (or motion picture association) ban. It has no legal standing. But this extra-judicial step has been taken because of the pressure of groups like the MNS (which group is otherwise known for stone-throwing at certain houses.. don’t think I need to elaborate more..) and of course many other kinds of political outfits as well. I’m not arguing about the ban one way or the other but it’s important not to mix everything up because this is precisely the sort of narrative advanced by certain political groups where the legal is often mixed with the extra-legal, the political with the demagogic and so on. I’m not just saying it in this instance. I think there is a massive number of instances from the JNU and Hyderabad incidents to others in other areas. Again I’m not getting into all of these debates but what troubles me greatly (whatever side does this) is the ‘extra-legal’ that becomes increasingly acceptable when couched in a certain populist language and so forth. We see this around the world today and we’ve seen this in the recent historical past as well. The resort to ‘popular’ authoritarianism (or authoritarianism earned by the vote) in the face of a more complicated or uncertain world, as a response to economic stresses of all sorts but also (and never least) for an otherwise upwardly mobile middle class that starts developing all sorts of great power or superpower complexes. And so in the name of ‘national glory’ very much becomes acceptable. Crises are engineered and/or manipulated to advance certain narratives and more nakedly to concentrate power on certain sides. This is happening everywhere one turns. The authoritarian model is simply a very attractive and viable option the world over. We see for instance the appeal of Trump in the US but from Erdogan to Orban, from Duerte to Kaczynski let’s not kid ourselves about what’s going on. And let’s not pretend we don’t love the same model. One can’t just extoll democracy at every turn and be willing to accept the extra-legal at the very same time. Democracy isn’t just about the vote. And again whether the right or the left does it it is equally condemnable. In any case my point in bringing up all of this is that these strikes cannot be seen divorced from this larger context. And if we’re convinced about the purity of our intentions or those of our leaders rest assured that all those others are as well and in every sense. ‘Truth’ apparently depends on where you reside..]

    • Actually nothing is like previous govt at all. That would be vey very ignorant statement to make! Not many know the actions against na-pakistan was planned since months, its not a mere fully fledged war game but a powerful ploy to finish na-pakistan for ever. IT won’t be announced on your MSM news channels but it for all to “see” if one wants to see. First win was getting Russia to cancel the joint military operation and Russia will not supply MIG-35 to na-pakistan. You have to understand the ramification of this action. India has gained support from us, uk, russia, france, japan, vietnam, israel, afganistan, bangladesh and EVEN Saudi. Stategic pacts in Chahabar port which impacts trade resulting in huge economic loss for na-pakistan. This is how you destroy enemy without war and permanently delete the enemy from root. Lot of these achieved by his many travels which previous very corrupt govt did not ever engage in or interested in. You simply cannot compare apples to oranges unless you are totally ignorant of what is happening at international, diplomatic strategic level maneuvers.

      • ” Russia cancelled joint military operations”, when did that happen? Infact the joint drill started soon after the Uri attack. This shows the strategic partnership with Russia isnt that strong that it was earlier. OIC passed a resolution criticizing Indian govt role in Kashmir. China has dammed one of the tributaries of Brahmputra. Do you expect Israel, Afghanistan, Bangladesh to support Pakistan?

I fully support govt action against pakistan. These steps were much needed as a hard response to a belligerent neighbour. We cant change the geopolitics but can deter our neighbour through these multilateral actions in different direction. Thats the only way out, but saying that the root cause of the problem is resolved is saying too much, there is no panacea to this complex issue and to think otherwise is not rationale.
India dont have that leverage to isolate pakistan in international community. US needs both India and Pakistan so it wont condemn pakistan. Expectations should be realistic and in tune with the current world order.

        • Even for great powers there are a lot of intractable problems that can’t be solved easily if at all. Unfortunately there are certain problems that one hates but that can only be ‘managed’ to the extent possible. These are problems without solutions, at least in the foreseeable future. In democracies however there are more popular moves and those that are less so. But this choice does’t really map on very well if at all to the essence of the problem. For instance a very easy case could be made that for the Pakistan security establishment some minimal state of tension with India is always helpful. It doesn’t have to be something constant, there just have to be enough flashpoints in any given year. From brazen terrorist attempts to lesser border incidents there is a certain state of hostilities (at least potentially) that’s not unhelpful as it always ‘justifies’ the essential security argument of the same establishment. Put differently if everything’s ok between the two countries and Pakistani actors can keep acting in Hindi films and Hindi films can keep releasing in India and Zee Zindagi (I guess that’s the channel showing Pakistani shows).. if this whole cultural dimension gets more vital not less and there’s no overt political trouble either then why would anyone need that dominant Pakistani security state? Even if the Kashmir problem isn’t resolved but becomes the sort of stalemate that in fact it was for decades before ’89 (disputed territory but everything was otherwise normal, films regularly shot there and so on), the Arunachal-like problem where the Chinese make it part of China on their maps, all of this still defeats the, and to use a cliche, ‘deep state’ in Pakistan. Now of course no country can keep tolerating this sort of stuff forever. But my point is a simple one here. Doing something is not always better than doing nothing even if the former might often be more politically popular or expedient or might even have a wag the dog aspect to it (why do nations decide that some provocations require immediate responses while others just call for peace initiatives? Whatever the choice either one can be sold as the old necessary one to the citizens). But secondly doing something in this case always minimally helps the other side for the reasons I’ve pointed out. Certain problems lose their solutions over time. To the extent that a solution always exists it’s an imaginary one because it can never actually be achieved. There has to be some other important intervening event that reorders the entire situation. And one can say one side is totally responsible for the problem or more responsible than the other or whatever but this ultimately becomes an academic debate that does not facilitate any sort of solution. We often have this romantic view of things (incidentally not just in politics) where we think ‘doing something’ is always better and ‘doing nothing’ is always equated with some sort of passivity. But the latter can equally be an active choice and often have much more wisdom behind it. And to prove the point notice what the ‘debate’ is about currently. India is celebrating ‘surgical strikes’ while Pakistan is denying these ever occurred. They presumably have less problems with other kinds of attacks but ‘surgical’ ones cannot be conceded. In a way both sides agree. There is some (colonial) prestige to ‘surgical strikes’ (hey this is what the US does.. it’s cool!), everyone’s happy with this term in India, meanwhile what is being denied on the other side is precisely the term. So it’s already not about the essence of the problem and much more about this sort of stuff. War is politics by other means to quote a great thinker of the subject. But people naively believe otherwise in many situations. My problem once more isn’t with retaliation. It’s about the celebration of the same as some sort of great end-in-itself. And again I’ll repeat the older point. Even a power like the US often faces this sort of problem-without-solution and to solve it engages in decisions that can be politely called ‘questionable’ and are sometimes plain crazy. People cheer things, later they abuse the same decision-makers.

  33. M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story Emerges A Hit
    Saturday 01 October 2016 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story has emerged a HIT as it had another huge day on Saturday of around 18.5-19 crore nett as per early estimates. The weekdays will tell how big a hit the film will emerge. The collections have dropped from day one a little but are still at a very high level and its two day total is around 39 crore nett in its Hindi version. A drop was always on the cards as the film had taken a genuine initial (the second one of 2016 after Sultan) and after such a start and no holidays to support there is always a chance for a drop.

The problem would have been a drop of 15% or more but here it is minimal and the film should be back on the upward trend again on Sunday. Though as the film is at a high level it may not be the normal big growth that comes on Sunday for this type of film. Many multiplexes in North India managed show growth as business under performed there on Friday so the upside for growth was there. The main falls are in Central India markets which happens on day two and South India due to the huge collections on day one. The film does not have the content which normally does well in South but the cricket factor with Dhoni brand is ensuring big numbers in South.

I was sensing a big Buzz before its realse, saw it FDFS, enjoyed it and then saw every review basically saying the same thing.
Today Dhoni, Sachin are the biggest brand in India and this reception is just a token proof is that.
I also read interviews of Dhoni where he said he did nothing t want himself to be glorified. Hence there are no songs about his preparing for the big won, sweating and preparing it etc.
Not even a mention of his genius decisions at crucial times and his method of finishing, when he is the best Finisher we have seen for India and he has already surpassed Bevan.
All in all his legacy gets enhanced and he still remains captain cool forever for India.

  34. Fist it was Salman Khan’s Sultan that pushed the release date of Raees ahead, now it seems like the reason could be Mahira Khan.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Shah Rukh Khan may have taken Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) threat seriously as an insider discloses he may be pushing the release date of his film Raees as it stars Pakistani actor Mahira Khan.

After Fan, Shah Rukh Khan will next be seen in an action thriller, Raees, directed by Rahul Dholakia, and co-produced by Shah Rukh, and Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s production house Excel Entertainment.

The film has been under the scanner for a while now because of its release date, which is clashing with Hrithik Roshan’s next film, Kaabil, produced by his father Rakesh Roshan. Both the projects are slated to release on January 26 next year.

But an insider reveals that Shah Rukh, along with the makers of his next, is considering shifting the release date of his film. And the clash with Hrithik’s movie is not the only reason for it, the bigger cause being the presence of Pakistani actor Mahira Khan in the film.

The source says SRK, who was recently in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) to shoot for another project with Anushka Sharma, had been coordinating with his team about his next step. “Because of the MNS order, the makers want to push the release date to avoid double losses. Also, they can’t afford to have the movie boycotted at the last moment due to the current tension between India and Pakistan. If the film is postponed, it will be a big win for Hrithik. Both Dilwale (2015) and Fan didn’t fare well at the box office. So, SRK will avoid taking a risk like that,” reveals the source.

    • Yogi Adityanath backs Salman Khan on comments on Pakistani actors

GORAKHPUR: Under attack for his comments in support of Pakistani actors working in Bollywood, Salman Khan has found an unlikely ally in firebrand BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, who too has said India’s fight is against terrorists and “not against art and culture”.
“Our fight is not against art and culture, it is against terrorism,” Adityanath said here yesterday replying to a query on the latest controversy surrounding the Bollywood actor.

Adityanath, who is also the head priest of Gorakhnath Peeth, voiced his views on the issue during an informal chat with reporters after the inauguration of a ‘Jan Suvidha Kendra’ at the railway station here.

After the Pakistani actors were given a 48-hour “deadline” by the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to leave the country in the wake of the Uri terror attack, Khan had said they (Pakistani filmstars working in India) were “artistes and not terrorists”, evoking sharp reactions from various quarters.

Here is someone who compares filming a movie scene to being raped, runs his cr over people sleeping on the pavement, abuses his ex girlfriends, has no respect for protection of wild-life. And while he has every right to share his views on something of national interest, we shouldn’t give too much prominence to that. Nana is pot on here.

  39. M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story Has Excellent First Weekend
    Monday 03 October 2016 11.00 IST

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story has scored a fantastic first weekend grossing around 62 crore nett in its Hindi format over the first weekend. There was a Tamil and Telugu version of the film which has grossed around 3,75 crore nett which is also pretty decent and better than films like Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. The collections of the film are excellent all over over barring North India. In North India the film has done good business but has not performed as well as it has in other parts of the contry. Comparing with other films, the weekend is in the same range as films like Bang Bang (Holiday release) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewani. It is also a bit unlucky that the huge Gandhi Jayanti holiday fell on Sunday which gave a minimal boost as Sunday is a holiday anyway. If it came on Monday, the film would have really got a big boost. The weekend business of M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story is as follows

    Friday – 20,00,00,000
    Saturday – 19,00,00,000
    Sunday – 23,00,00,000

    TOTAL – 62,00,00,000

The weekend ensures a HIT film despite high costs and the next few days will tell how big of a hit the film can be and whether the industry gets the second BLOCKBUSTER of the year. The trend of the film is better than the weekend numbers suggest as the film did have capacity constraints at major multiplexes due to the length of the film. So although there is not much growth over the weekend the film has recorded high occupancy rates which should mean that the film will hold on the weekdays.

    • Movie is already a superhit and is on the way to ATBB. North India will hold better over weekdays and with Navratra festivities it is bound to do better.

Surprisingly Bihar/Jharkhand figures are not yet out for MSD where it has already beaten previous records. In Tamil and Telugu this will be highest grossing hindi cinema ever.

Dhoni – The Untold Story and continued to do well in the big cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Bangalore while most other places where it is running was very low. The drop from last weekend is 70% while the second weekend was down 35%. This is the huge difference that major competition makes, the fall is double of last week. The film will settle at around 66-68 crore nett which would make it fifth behind Barfi, Piku, Neerja and Kapoor & Sons which are the biggest films with majority business come from multiplexes and metros. The business of Pink till date is as follows.

    Week One – 35,51,00,000

    Week Two – 21,50,00,000 apprx

    Third Friday – 4,59,00,000 apprx

Take for example, Hockey which is actually owned by Indian Govt and which is in 100% in their control and they don’t do anything whereas BCCI is independent body and they instruct them to severe ties and playing with Pakistan.

While the surgical strike was happening India was nicely playing with Pakistan in Hockey Semi-final. Why didn’t the govt or any organizations stop that game. Luckily India won but it they should have not played to be consistent with other stuff going on. No one even reports such stuff anywhere in media.. they are busy with movies!

Fans may have seen Superstar Rajinikanth take down an army, but it looks like he has met his match in ‘Enthiran 2.0’, with Akshay Kumar playing the villainous role. Bollywood’s ‘khiladi’ will reportedly take on Rajinikanth in an epic fight scene that has already been shot. Stunt director Stunt Silva revealed that both the interval and climax fight sequences have already been shot and it will see Dr Richard (Akshay), who turns into a crow as a result of a freak experiment take on Vaseegaran (Rajinikanth) the robot scientist. The film that is being made on a whopping budget of Rs 350 crore, will hit theatres in 2017. The first look of the film will be out next month, November. While this is Aki’s first film with the south superstar, it is also after a very long time that we will see him play a villainous role in a film after a forgettable ‘Aflatoon’ back in the ‘90s that saw him in a twin role.

When it comes to the latter either people say nothing or they indulge in banalities like ‘the politicians know their job’ and what not. I can more excuse the person who says nothing about anyone, problematic as such silence might be, than someone who is so candid (and gets marks for doing so) selectively. Now it’s true that most people aren’t this candid even when it comes to Bollywood. Quite naturally they don’t want to rub people the wrong way when they’re part of the same industry. Still if you raise the stakes this way you then have to live up to those standards. You can’t suddenly exclude politicians. Even if it is a Prime Minister.

        • I don’t understand Marathi either.. I certainly stand to correction if he has spoken candidly in these matters. However in the Hindi clip you’ve provided note that his critique of politics though effective is a general one. He is neither talking about specific politicians nor specific policies whereas with that Bollywood example he’s referring to something specific (the same with the Dutt example which I looked up after Master mentioned it). Not doubting his sincerity and I also know why people have to be careful taking on politicians in India. So I am not totally unsympathetic but he’s raised the bar for himself. Now it could be that he’s criticized specific politicians in the past which I’m unaware and again I stand to correction on this.

          Like

        • “No one can argue that country and Armymen comes before anything else incl arts and sports.”

I actually would argue exactly this. Why? Because it all depends on what the country and the army stand for. Imagine someone in Pakistan saying exactly what you did! The Indian army is one thing, the Pakistani army quite another. Because the latter runs the country, the former doesn’t. There have been national armies throughout history and today as well that commit all kinds of horrible crimes as part of their ‘duties’ or otherwise. Which is to say this is not about bad apples but people acting collectively. And the very same applies to ‘country’. To support one’s country without qualification is to support anything and everything that happens in the name of that country. So it was perfectly ok for Germans to support Hitler because they were supporting their ‘country’ (and ‘army’). These are not extreme examples. First off extreme examples always indicate the problem with defining things so universally. Beyond this however there are tons of other examples. I put this long response up on Bachchan’s blog the other day (which I copied here) and I’ll repeat just one bit of it. If you think that ‘truth’ or whatever one’s values are can be defined in some ultimate sense by religion or nation or ethnicity or whatever then you can subscribe to the statement you’ve just put up. I don’t. For the very simple reason (as I’ve just indicated) that if you consider those labels absolute you will sooner or later justify every ‘violence’ that occurs using those names. Or else you will refuse to even recognize the violence in the first place.

At number two is Aandavan Kattalai which is rock steady and going full during the weekends. In the third position is Thodari, which has collapsed in its second week.
Iru Mugan is still strong in its fourth week in smaller screens in multiplexes and is at number four. Pink continues to rock the box-office at number five.

  46. Not Fawad! Only Indians will suffer if the release of Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is hampered!

Let’s take the case of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Political outfits that have called for a ban against the Diwali release have an issue with the presence of Fawad Khan in its cast. Logically speaking, blocking the release of the Ranbir Kapoor-Anushka Sharma-Aishwarya Rai starrer at this point of time will have zilch effect on Fawad Khan! The man has taken his fees for acting in the film and is happily back at home in Lahore now. The ones who would actually bear the maximum impact of a ban or a troublesome release are —

    1) An Indian company called Dharma Productions, headed by a much celebrated Indian film-maker called Karan Johar, who has successfully taken Indian cinema to various parts of the globe.

    2) An India-based studio called Foxstar, that has invested Indian currency worth crores to make this film.

    3) An Indian star called Ranbir Kapoor, whose family has served the Indian film industry for four generations.

    4) A global icon from India called Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who has made Indians across the world proud with her achievements.

    5) Film exhibitors across India, who contribute to the coffers of Indian state governments by paying entertainment tax.

The five entities mentioned above are regular and significant payers of service tax, income tax and entertainment tax, which are used by the central and state governments for the development of Indian infrastructure, boosting the Indian economy, to benefit Indian citizens and also, for the welfare of Indian soldiers who guard our borders against the terrorists who infiltrate from Pakistan!

On that note, I’d like to ask the readers of this article — Who is being anti-natinal here? The people who have made Ae Dil Hai Mushkil or the ones who threaten to defy the Indian CBFC’s verdict and hamper the release of a film that is poised to plough a lot of money into the Indian film industry?

I truly hope that all of us Indians can work as a unit without harming each other at a time when our armed forces and diplomatic infrastructure are busy fighting threats from across the border.

If the work Visa (not Visitor) was given by Govt. then they are good to work and no business in stopping the movies. You certainly can use your right not to watch the movies. If Govt. doesn’t give Visa, there is no way they can act if the movie is not set outside India. Again, if you feel strongly about the cause, you can stop watching the movie and it will force the producers not to hire.

Should the Pakistani actors who act in Indian movies, condemn attack in URI or any terrorist attacks in India; They should, if they have criticized Orlando, Paris or any thing… If they don’t, they implicitly accepting that the attacks have something to do with Pakistan state and any reference will make their life miserable when they return. One thing they can say that URI was not against public but Indian state and we don’t need to say anything one way or other, but that also implies that Pakistan is involved or something to do with Kashmir.

You (Indian people who are against Pakistani Actors) cannot control external factors/forces but you can control internal factors; You can launch campaign not to watch any KJO movie instead of threatening KJO. That will be a democratic way to protest.

  49. Mumbai: Veteran actor Om Puri and director Nagesh Kukunoor have come out in support of Pakistani actors, saying art and politics should be kept separate and banning the artistes will not change the situation.

Puri said Pakistani artistes are not working illegally here and if they are sent back, Indian producers, who have signed them for their films, will suffer heavy losses. “When the government is taking an action, we all should stay quiet. It hardly matters if we send back the artists from Pakistan, who are working here, or let them stay. I have been to Pakistan six times and have met people from all strata,” the 65-year-old actor said here.

“I have always received love and warmth. If the Pakistani actors leave the projects they are doing here in middle, then people in India (filmmakers) will also face financial loss. Hence, this is insignificant. The actors have not come here through any illegal way. They have valid visa. But, if the government will ask them to leave, then it is different,” he said.

Filmmaker Nagesh Kukonoor said though the situation between India and Pakistan is complex, he believes art should be kept away from politics.

“I have always believed that art should stand alone. Even if you take the worst periods in a nation’s history, World War II, art still had its voice. I don’t think the two should be mixed.

“Having said that, the India-Pakistan situation is an extremely complex one. We are all part of the same country. 60-70 years is a very short period to actually find some kind of peaceful common ground.”

Their remarks came days after superstar Salman Khan opposed the ban on Pakistani actors, saying they are artistes not terrorists. The film industry has been divided on the issue of banning Pakistani artistes in the wake of Uri attack. Actor Randeep Hooda, filmmakers Ashoke Pandit, Anupam Kher are among those who have backed the ban.

Hooda tweeted that Pakistan should be culturally isolated. “We are trying to isolate Pakistan economically & diplomatically so the cultural isolation must follow #BanPakArtists #IndiaComesFirst #India,” he wrote.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar said though he believes that art has no boundaries, the situation right now is such that nothing is bigger than the country. He also said that Pakistani artistes, who have worked in India should condemn the Uri attack.

“Definitely the artists are not terrorists, and I believe that art has no boundary but the situation today is very different. When you see our 19 soldiers have been killed, and when we see the whole scenario… I feel a lot of Pakistani artists who work here they should have condemned the attacks on India over the years. “When they can condemn US attack, when they can condemn Istanbul, Paris (attacks), all those attacks then why not India? My problem is that. When Peshawar (attack) happened, everybody in India condemned. So, if the Pakistani actors feel it (the attack) is happening over here, they should at least tweet about it. Right now I think nothing is bigger than the country.

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, when asked if Pakistani actors should be allowed to do work in India, refused to be drawn into the controversy. “This is our government’s job. Our government has a lot of expertise who look after these matters and policies. Being an artist I have no opinion on this controversy. This is not my job. Government decides it and it is their duty,” he told reporters at an event in the capital.

The debate began after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena demanded the ouster of the artistes from the neighbouring country. Recently, the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association also announced ban on the actors and technicians from the neighbouring country till things don’t get normal between the two nations.

If the government of India is keeping quiet inspite of all the furore, it is evident that it is taciltly supporting the ban. We dont need extra brains to decipher this.

Did govt ban the movies? No, right? So, why this compromise? Scared of political goons? If you are think being patriotic is avoiding movies with Pakistani actors.. then there is no need to do anything. Let the movies release peacefully and folks can avoid watching it on big screen. That should be enough!

  51. I think folks needs to face reality. Movies have nothing to do with political wars. Ban actors or not, it doesn’t matter to anyone. More than movies, there is lot of import-export business, Delhi-Lahore bus and all kinds of transactions between these two countries but everyone behaving dumb and making this 5-6 artists as the sole criteria of the war and if they end up banning them they have financially handicapped Pakistan to a large extent and won the war. Its so silly and can’t believe everyone are still debating on this and falling to this media created crap issue.

Arre ban or not.. its not that a big deal.. why spend so much time on this topic all over the media when the reality is more about war and political scenario.

Rocky uses swear words like pigs, idiots etc. to browbeat others.

Uncivilised person who wants everyone to toe the line.

Bans become highly effective tools to get the point through. One does need loud proclamations. Snapdeal was taught a lesson. Aamir Khan is still castigated for his remarks. And now I feel it is a good lesson. Otherwise he would have opened his mouth now and again would have been in big trouble.

        • As I’ve said before in these matters I’m not here 24/7. Very often I might not even be here for a half day or more. It’s probably reasonable to think about this before one starts questioning he moderator’s motivations. I’ve just edited one of the comments. I couldn’t find the ‘pigs’ remark. Maybe it didn’t come over the last 24 hrs. Obviously Rocky shouldn’t engage in such language when he’s arguing with people here. I’d also say that it’s best for people not to argue when they rub each other the wrong way. Have said this forever. On the rest though I’m actually far more lenient, I give far more chances to people who I don’t know at all. I could point to many many examples here but I don’t find it necessary to do this. There are people who’ve attacked me in all sorts of ways who I didn’t ban until I felt that there were other kinds of problems as well.

Rocky tends to be a rather passionate sort in these discussions, specially when it comes to politics (!). I and he disagree most of the time and we’ve often had all kinds of debates in these matters. But I disagree with very many people here or sometimes have strong arguments with them on many things. But they’re not here because I agree or disagree with them. Rocky’s a good guy as far as I’m concerned. He should still take care with his language sometimes but he doesn’t quite mean all of this. I’ve faced abuse and I’ve seen abuse directed at others. I know the difference. Ultimately this is a judgment call. But that same discretion is applied everywhere else (here) too. This has nothing to do with knowing him for a long time or anything. Again not defending his choice of language in the instances you and Sanjana have pointed out. I’ve edited it where I could find it. Once more Rocky should stay away from these discussions too, at least with people where he cannot accept their ‘good faith’. But he’s certainly a good guy!

By the way (addressing Sanjana here too) luckily my sense of tolerance is not that of Snapdeal! Or perhaps I don’t face the same political pressures!

    Monday 03 October 2016 23.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story (Hindi) has collected well on Monday again with around 7.50 crore nett but the trend is weak as the drop is around 60-65% from day one. If the 7 crore nett plus Monday is looked at as a standalone then its a good Monday but considering how the film went over the weekend its Monday number is not up to the mark. The four day total is good at 69 crore nett beating the first week totals of most films released this apart from five films. The drops have come all over but that issue of huge ratio of collections in South India over the weekend has hit the film with big drops in South India.

The film is still a HIT as the first week should go to around 85 crore nett and then it will remain in cinemas till Diwali. The only issue is that Monday should have been better, a 10 crore nett total on Monday was a top end possibility going by the weekend but realistically it should have been around 9 crore nett which would have been a good hold and a 55% drop from day one.

Despite the film unlikely to go onto to be a big winner it is still commendable that the film will recover its high cost at around 100 crore without any face value as far as actors are concerned and no big hit song.

A source close to Khan informed, “He is currently busy shooting for Kabir Khan’s Tubelight. The details will be finalized when he returns from Manali next week.” The business plan for Salman Talkies is on the way, the source told a leading daily, “He will be lending his name to a theatre chain to promote tax-free viewing. As of now six single screen across Maharashtra have been roped in. Tickets at his theatres will be available at low prices and will be free for children. He would be launching each screen personally.”

the theatres will come along during Diwali, with the release of Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay. Salman also wishes to venture into the UP market by 2017.

  64. Rocky, let’s move on..!

I will make this point about the pigs comment though and I’m not even just referring to this term. If one routinely uses terms like ‘Aaptards’ and ‘libtards’ as is common currency for people on the Right online then the AAP supporter or the leftie or anyone of that orientation can be forgiven for taking offense. If I say all BJP supporters are Nazis or use this term to refer to them every time you might think I’m talking about you as well. I don’t think these terms are helpful anyway. People who already agree with each other pat themselves on the back with such terms. The other side does the same in other respects. One doesn’t really persuade anyone nor does one make one’s case stronger by even a little bit by constantly indulging in these ‘names’. If you recall I’ve said the same thing about only quoting opinion pieces or comments or celebrity tweets that support one’s view of the world. Again those on the other side do exactly the same. Not sure who ‘wins’ such a ‘debate’. One can make the strongest polemical points (I know!) without resorting to such terms. And while no one is innocent in these matters the Right is just much better organized and/or more motivated in contemporary India for this sort of activity. So at the drop of a hat these words spring up. Or every other minute someone is betraying one’s country. From filmmakers to actors to what not. There is this inquisitorial tone where if people disagree they must be subjected to certain ‘tests’, made to prove their allegiance, so on and so forth. One might not intend all of this consciously but that’s the worldview one starts representing. Even if you violently disagree with someone it does not make them ‘traitors’ or ‘Pakistanis’ or whatever the latest insult is. I’d again repeat what I said just the other day on bachchan’s blog (and reproduced here). Our notions of truth (in any sense of the word) shouldn’t depend on party allegiances or national allegiances or religious allegiances. Because when one makes this choice one endorses many kinds of lies, whether one intends to or not. Certain lies will never be recognized as such if one thinks that any statement coming from the side one likes or one believes in is always right and always truthful. And you should know me enough to realize that I say this same thing in every other context too. So it’s not just about you but you have offered an example!

  65. There are 3 issues at stake here. One is the nature of the debate (Banning Pakistani artists; slamming Bollywood stars who are against it etc) and two, how the debate is conducted. It’s obviously not acceptable to stop people from commenting on any topic provided they do so with civility. It’s a different matter that this particular topic, for various reasons, is not even worth debating about!

There’s also a larger, third, issue at stake here. This blog is supposed to be an alternative to the bickering (and noisy) online world where anything goes, and all sorts of abuses are acceptable. I believe people who frequent this place expect to see mature discussions unfolding on varied topics – be it Bollywood or the murky world of politics. I may be speaking for myself here but these are the expectations anyway.

Now every time we have these immature discussions where there’s an attempt to drown out a dissenting voice, some sane people are simply dissuaded to continue posting here. I’m making an assumption here but I believe I’m not too far off the mark. There are people who’d normally post and comment but after going through some of the negative comments, they might just decide to move on. If this happens, and there’s no reason to believe it doesn’t already happen, then it is a major problem. We are collectively creating hurdles for the good folk by tolerating a brand of boorish behavior. This can’t be right!

By the way, I’m not trying to point fingers at anyone. I don’t harbor any notions of being a saint, nor do I wish to shirk any responsibility from myself in contributing to some of these unpleasant scenarios. Just putting this out there…for whatever it’s worth!

  67. Your mother was molested: Boxer Mary Kom’s open letter to her sons
Mary Kom, Hindustan Times | Updated: Oct 04, 2016 08:16 IST

Let’s talk about rape: Eight eminent Indians write open letters in Hindustan Times to discuss the reality of sexual assault in India.
In Part 2 of the series, Mary Kom writes an open letter to her sons.

    Dear Sons,
Let’s talk about rape. Let’s talk about sexual crimes against women. Every single day, women are being stalked, molested and raped. You, my boys, are only nine-years old – and the youngest only three – but this is the age where we must sensitise ourselves to how we treat our women.

Let me start by telling you that your mother was molested, first in Manipur and then again while she was out with her girl friends in Delhi and Haryana’s Hissar. I know it is shocking to learn that even a woman who has earned her spurs, boxing her way through life, was made to feel violated. I was on my way to my training camp at 8.30 in the morning in a cycle rickshaw when a stranger suddenly lunged at me and stroked my breast. I was angry, very angry. I leapt off the rickshaw and chased him, holding my slipper in my hand, but he managed to escape. My regret is that I could not catch him or the karate that I had already learnt by then, would have come in handy.
I was only 17-years-old then and am 33 now. I have brought great fame to my country and have been celebrated as a medalist but what I also want, is to be respected as a woman. We women have scaled heights and stormed male bastions but for some men, we are still all about our bodies. Remember, dear sons, like you, we too have two eyes and a nose. Some parts of our bodies are different and that’s the only thing that sets us apart. We use our brains to think, like all men do, and we feel with our hearts, like you do. We don’t deserve our breasts to be touched or our bums patted. That’s what happened to my friends and me in Delhi and Hissar, while we were taking a walk outside our training camps.

It is seldom about what we wear or at what time of day and night we are out. Why should women pause and think about venturing out? The world belongs as much to us, as it does to you? I have never understood what pleasure men get when they touch us against our will. As you grow up, I want you to know, that molestation and rapes are crimes that deserve the strictest punishment. If you ever happen to see a young girl being teased, I urge you to reach out and help. The saddest part is that we are becoming uncaring as a society. A young girl in India’s capital was stabbed multiple times and though there were many who could have come to her aid, none did.
You grow up in a home where we teach you respect and equality. Your father does not go out to do a nine-to-five job – like you see your friend’s dads doing – because one of us must always be there for you. Between my training and my work now as a Member of Parliament, I have to spend long hours out of home. I have the utmost respect for your father who now dedicates his time for me and for you all. You will soon hear the words “house husband” but remember that’s not a slur; neither is it derogatory. He’s my strength, my partner, who walks with me through every step I take.

There are other words that you will hear soon. You might be walking with me one of these days to hear your mother being called a ‘chinky’. That is a slur. That is racist. I am Indian and I know you are growing up to be proud Indians. We belong to a state that is in the grip of an insurgency. I protect you against violence, I help you overcome fears. Equally important — as you get on to become this great country’s future — is that you grow to respect women. A lot of women from our State are targeted for the way they look and the way they dress. ‘Chinkies’ are not fair game.

My country has given me fame and recognition but I am not recognised by each person on the road – as an MS Dhoni or a Virat Kohli will most certainly be – but I do not deserve to be called ‘chinky’. A man recently broke out into what he thought was the Chinese language and I stopped him and spoke to him in firm Hindi and ticked him off.

I am blessed now to be in the august house of the Rajya Sabha and I will do my best to create awareness about sexual crimes against women. It is an opportunity I must seize. I will ask questions about the way some of our politicians speak, about the attitude of the police whose sole duty it is apply the law.

But sexual crimes are also steeped in our mindsets and I would fail in my duty as a mother, if I did not tell you – all great sons of this country – that we alone have rights to our bodies. Respect women when they say ‘No’. Don’t stalk them to death because they have said ‘No’. Rape is not about sex; it is only about a misplaced sense of power and revenge.

I know I can beat a molester to pulp and that might help me fight the deep sense of being defiled but why should it even come to that? Desire is beautiful when it is reciprocal. We have often heard the explanation of ‘boys will be boys’. Let’s build a society where girls can be safe, secure and respected.
    Yours
    Mom

“The older Bhallala is stronger and beefier, so I weighed around 108-110 kg for some portions in both the films. His younger version is strong too, but leaner. So I lost a few kilos for that. My weight has dropped to 92-93 kg now,” Rana said in a statement.

Excited not scared about Baahubali 2, says actor Tamannaah
Going by an image Rana has shared on his Twitter page on Tuesday, he looks bigger and meaner for the second part of the film.
Having been training for two and a half hours daily over the last five months, he said: “I’ve been shuttling between cardio and weight training.”Rana’s diet, monitored by his trainer Kunal Gir, has been high on carbs and proteins and oil free.

“I eat every two and a half hours and there’s a nutritionist present around the clock. He conducts regular check-ups to ensure that we are on the right track,” he said.
Directed by SS Rajamouli, Baahubali: The Conclusion will finally reveal why Kattappa killed Baahubali.
The film also stars Prabhas, Tamannaah Bhatia, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan and Sathyaraj.

  69. Banning Pakistan artistes will not do any good: M S Sathyu
“This won’t end the differences between India and Pakistan,” the 86-year-old “Garam Hava” director said.

Renowned filmmaker M S Sathyu on Tuesday said that banning the Pakistani artistes from performing in India won’t help in resolving the Indo-Pak differences.
“For the last couple of decades, eminent music directors and artistes are coming here from Pakistan. But now some people are saying that they won’t be allowed to come to India,” said Sathyu, who was here to participate in the Indian People’s Theatre Association’s convention.

“This won’t end the differences between India and Pakistan,” the 86-year-old “Garam Hava” director told reporters . Asked whether he wished to invite Pakistani artists to IPTA convention, he said, “Why not? They should certainly be invited to such functions.”

Meanwhile, the local writer Vineet Tiwari who is involved in the organisation of IPTA convention said they had invited the Pakistani musician Taimur Rahman after getting due clearances from the authorities. But Rahman couldn’t make it as he sustained a fracture to his hand. The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association has passed a resolution to ban the Pakistani actors in the wake of the Uri terror attack and the surgical strike by Indian Army in the Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir.

  70. “Mirzya is my most passionate film to date” – Rakeysh Mehra

    BySubhash K. Jha

How it all started: “I had seen a stage version of the legend of Mirza Sahibaan when I was in college. Like all legendary love sagas this one too ended as tragedy. But the one question that haunted me was, why at the end of the tale did Sahibaan break all the arrows of Mirza? If she hadn’t broken them perhaps he wouldn’t have died. The question stayed with me over the years. When I was making Bhaag Milkha Bhaag I was also working on Mirzya.

How I met Gulzar Bhai: “I sent him a text message of one word. ‘Chai?’ he replied I could come anytime. So I walked to his place and asked him the question that had haunted me all these years. Why did Sahibaan break all the arrows? Gulzar Bhai thought over that one and said, ‘Bachchoo—he calls me that– We’ll have to ask Sahibaan that. Let’s ask her.’ This is how Mirzya was born.”

My office my creative playground: “For two years my office became the hub of our team’s inputs. I still remember the first time Gulzar Bhai walked in. He had brought a Ganpati statuette for good luck. It occupies a pride of place in my office.”

Format was unique: “We decided to make it as a musical in the truest sense, not exactly the way Bollywood musicals are perceived in the West, though of course I’ve the highest regard for the song-and-dance format in the cinema of Manmohan Desai and others. However we conceived Mirzya as a completely unique musical. Our inspiration was the French documentary Latcho Drom directed by Tony Gatlif. In that documentary we saw the sense of continuity in the music played in different parts of the world. In Latcho Drom even as cultures costumes and musical instruments changed the sense of continuity was held steady all across the journey. This is the mood we’ve tried to create in our film.”

Two Lives, Two Love Stories One Film: “We’ve created two different love stories, totally unrelated, in one film. In one of them we have no dialogues. I feel love is best expressed when not expressed at all. In both, Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher play the lovers. But the two love stories are not related in any way, no reincarnation, no genealogical links….They are completely separate. To me the theme of continuity without the prop of blood ties has always been vital.”

Gulzar bhai’s enduring link with Saiyami: “He worked with Saiyami’s grandmother the yesteryears’ actress Usha Kiron in Kabuliwalla, with Saiyami’s aunt, Tanvi Azmi in Mirza Ghalib. And how Gulzar Bhai has worked with Saiyami. This is an astonishing track record.”

Always newcomers: “Once Gulzar Bhai and I decided to do Mirzya we were sure it would be newcomers in the two roles. For the male lead Harshvardhan was more or less decided. I knew him from the time he would hang around my sets with his sister Sonam on the sets of my Delhi 6. I knew he was right for the role. For the role of Sahibaan we zeroed in on two faces Saiyami Kher and another girl. Both the girls were told either could be the final choice. There was absolutely no rivalry between them as they prepped for one part. Then there’s Anuj Choudhary playing the third protagonist. We got the cast that the story needed.”

Delhi chalo: “We took Harshvardhan and Saiyami out of Mumbai to Delhi to prepare for their parts. We felt the only way they could blossom into the Mirya and Sahibaan was if they were taken out of their environment. Incidentally this is the only love legend from India where the love birds have a physical relationship. Harsh and Saiyami surrendered completely to their roles to the point that they would be on the sets constantly even when they were not required.”

Bachpan ke din: “The portions where the childhood phase in Mirzya and Sahibaan’s life was played out had Saiyami commenting enviously on the quality of the child actors’ performances. ‘You should continue shooting with them only. You don’t need us,’ Saiyami said. We were constantly improvising on the sets. I’d warn Harshvardhan and Saiyami the minute they would get out of character; they would immediately stop and start again.”

All together: “Gulzar Bhai and I are practically neighbours in Bandra (Mumbai). If I step out of my home, he lives just a stone’s throw away. And Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have done all the music recordings in a studio close to where Gulzar Bhai and I stay. We recorded 300 hours of music for this film. We were constantly interacting, exchanging ideas, mulling. Even the film’s Polish cinematographer Pawel Dyllus joined us in Mumbai months before the shooting just to get familiar with the team.”

Another film on the table: “Now that the film is complete I can tell you Mirzya is 2 hours and 8 mins long. My wife P S Bharathi who edits all my films has turned it into a completely different entity from what I had shot. We had shot 800 hours of film. To cut down to 2 hours was not an easy task.”

And now the real test: “We’re done. The baby has been delivered. We now take the film to the prestigious London Film Festival on 6th October, a day before its release in India. Harsh and Saiyami will accompany me to the Festival. I am as excited as they are. It is not only their debut it is also mine. Every film that I make is a new beginning, a new adventure and a new challenge for me.”

Hema Malini says she appreciates the work of Pakistani actors but cannot say if they should work in India or not.

    By: IANS | New Delhi | Published:October 4, 2016 6:03 pm

Hema Malini says she appreciates the work of Pakistani actors but cannot say if they should work in India or not.
Veteran actress and politician Hema Malini says she appreciates the work of Pakistani actors but cannot say if they should work in India or not. Asked about her view on the ban on Pakistani artistes in India, Hema Malini, a BJP MP, said: “I don’t want to comment much on this controversial question. But all I can say is that we are artistes and so are those who come from there (Pakistan) to perform here.

“As an artiste, I can appreciate their work. But whether they should stay here or not, I can’t comment,” she added. Hema Malini was launching a new campaign of the brand Kent RO.
The Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association has decided to ban Pakistani artistes from working in Indian movies following a terror attack on Indian troops in Jammu and Kashmir that left 19 soldiers dead.
Meanwhile, Adnan Sami, who recently received his Indian nationality, has been making news for his pro-Indian statements on different occasions. Now, the singer is trending for his statement which hints at the Pakistani actors who chose to remain silent instead of condemning the attack of Uri.

“If your host has extended you a warm welcome, and suddenly a fire breaks out in (his) house, do you just run away? I feel they should have condemned the attack,” Adnan said at an event pointing out that he too had condemned the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.
The musician equated the Army’s surgical strike across the LoC to an individual having to enter his/her neighbour’s house and clean out their garbage because the neighbour refused to.
Taking a strong stand on his statement, Adnan said it is important to understand that the strike took place to eliminate terror camps, irrespective of which side of the border it is and even said that Pakistan should thank India and Indian army for a brilliant, successful, strategic and mature strike against terrorism in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.

  76. It’s a long set tradition that Aamir Khan releases his films on the Christmas weekend and the trailer of his films come out during Diwali every year. But this time, for Dangal, the first trailer of his film will be launched pre-Diwali — mere days before the festival.

Says a source, “Last week, Aamir showed the film to a few of his very close friends to know their reactions and their positive response prompted him to have a screening of the trailer a week before it hits the screens with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay on Diwali. He feels if his trailer is seen for the first time with these two films, it will get diluted. While he will get eyeballs with its theatrical release with these two films, Aamir wants more. The trailer will first be launched at a grand event and across social media and then in the theatres.”

Aamir likes to release his trailers during the Festival of Lights because he believes that it has been lucky for him. The trailers of the actor’s past few films were released on Diwali including Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots, Ghajini, Dhoom 3 and PK.

The film is finding good audience coming its way during the weekdays too, something that is being demonstrated in Monday [8.51 crore] and Tuesday [7.5 crore] collections. In the times when even the weekend collections of some of the much publicized films have failed to score such numbers, it is remarkable that the film is generating such collections during the weekdays.

This pretty much reaffirms the kind of appreciation that the film has garnered and the word of mouth spreading for the Sushant Singh Rajput starrer that has enabled it to touch the 82.03 crore mark.

    • Don’t know much about cricket (but have watched those famous game that is shown in the movie) at all. I found the movie interesting, humorous and boring when it gets romantic like everyone else. I nearly fell of the chair laughing in the introduction scene of Anupam kher in delivery room. People say there are no grey shades in the movie however they are there. Once Dhoni makes a friend he is loyal to core but if he makes enemy he will keep punga. The ‘coal’ company manager, 1st job of dhoni, doesn’t arrange for car “tum log manage kar lo” and his friends discuss possiblity of him not opening or being aware of the letter. Later in the movie, the same manager apologizes to MS when he makes it big. However, he never forgot/forgave any of the railway folks for the inquiry on him and those blokes are never shown again in the movie, even when director painstakingly shows everyone else who had a hand or finger in MS’s life, cheering. In a way, if there was no inquiry, he would prolly still be the TT and was pivotal moment which made him what he is today.

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story is find it tough going on the weekdays with another noticeable drop on Tuesday. The film looked set to be a huge hit with its weekend collections but since Monday the collections are coming down fast. It should scrape through to HIT status due to a weak line up of releases. After the weekend it looked set to be close to 100 crore nett in seven days but now the way it is going it may not even reach there in 10 days. The collections in the North are now actually down to poor levels which will make it tough in the North in week two and that will tell in all India collections as Mumbai comes down in week two anyway compared to circuits in North and Central India. The weekend business of M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story is as follows

    Friday – 20,00,00,000
    Saturday – 19,00,00,000
    Sunday – 22,50,00,000
    Monday – 7,25,00,000
    Tuesday – 6,25,00,000

    TOTAL – 75,00,00,000

The first week of the film will be around 84-85 crore nett but the film really has to settle at some point either today or tomorrow where the drop is minimal as Friday will see a drop as there will be Mirziya and a copule of other films fighting for screen space.

The Overseas business comfortably crossed $26 million which is the highest Overseas number for a Shahrukh Khan film. My Name Is Khan released in 2010 held the record at $22.80 million.

The achievement for the film was that it did it without performing in the biggest market which is US / Canada as that market could not even reach $5 million and was bettered by Bajirao Mastani which released on the same day. The did not set any highs in the big markets but set box office records in many small markets be it Malaysia, South Africa, Trinadad, Peru and Turkey among others.

    Americas

  81. Veteran actor Om Puri had sparked controversy with his outraging comments against the Indian Army who had lost their lives battling with the terrorists at the LOC. In a debate show on a news channel the actor was asked that who is responsible for the loss of army men who lost their lives? To which he had remarked that, ” Did we force them to join the army? My father was also in the army… We are proud of them (soldiers)… I am asking you: Do you want India and Pakistan to become Israel and Palestine?”.

The actor’s comments was indeed a clear insult to the selfless sacrifice of the soldiers and thus he was stronlgy bashed by the different sections of the society. However, he seems to have realized his mistake as he has now asked for a forgiveness for his comments.

The actor has who appeaed again in the same TV show said that, “I am very embarrassed at what I said and I deserve punishment, not forgiveness. I first apologise to his (a Uri attack martyr) family, if at all they will forgive me, I apologise to the whole country, the army. I know it’s not justified that you say so much and then think a sorry will make it right”

“I am guilty and I deserve a punishment. I want to be tried by the army, I should be court martialled. I want a constructive punishment. The army should teach me how to use weapons and send me on the same site where that brave man was sacrificed himself for the country. I don’t want to be forgiven. I am pleading to the nation I want to be punished.”

Though the actor has now apologised, the fact is that he has deeply hurt the sentiments of the families of our martyrs and the citizens here.

  82. We are also told that the path to big powerdom lies through the projection of soft power. That’s hogwash. The United States rose to its pre-eminent position, and China has come to dominate the world, not through films, music, burgers, pizza or chow mein and Peking duck. Their velvet glove of culture always hid an iron fist that was used, and continues to be used, whenever and wherever required.

Whenever I hear otherwise intelligent people talk about soft power and why India should opt for it over hard power, I am reminded of the tragicomic scene from Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj ke Khiladi which shows Nawab Wajid Ali Shah (Amjad Khan played the role) dancing with ankle bells, to the tune of a ghazal composed by him, late into the night as John Company plotted the smash and grab of Awadh. One doesn’t have to be a warmonger to laugh at those who believe ghungroos, gajras and ghazals can turn ghazis into friends.

The real world is vastly different from the make-believe reel world of clapboard sets. Those in Bollywood pleading the case for Pakistani actors and singers under the guise of promoting cross-border friendship should be more honest than that and admit that banishing them would be bad for business. Or are we to believe that their hearts beat for Pakistan, a terror-sponsoring State which makes no attempt to hide that it is India’s implacable enemy?

  84. Why Pakistani artists should condemn terror attacks in India

An artist represents freedom — the universal, unalienable idea that humanity must be free to live without fear, violence and misery.
    http://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/pakistani-artists-actors-indian-films-bollywood-india-pakistan-3065659/

History shows the opprobrium earned by artists who differentiate between human lives. Richard Wagner was a great
composer. But his association with Germany’s Nazi ideology shrank his stature, making it

hard for many who love Wagner’s Ring to not think, when it plays, of the millions herded into Holocaust camps, far
from wine, cheese, sonatas and philosophies. Some artists have lived within inhuman states, challenging them courageously. Through South Africa’s Apartheid, Nadine Gordimer shed light on darkness with heart-breaking, heart-warming words, even as the civilised world refused to play ball with a system that believed skin colour should determine a human’s life.
Yet, arguing art is above politics presents theorists with the opportunity to support lifting The Satanic Verses ban. In 1988, on this day, Salman Rushdie’s book was banned from import in India, a Congress government flirting with Muslim and Hindu right-wings, pulling Ayodhya, pushing Shah Bano into a cynical conjurer’s hat. But its Rushdie ban stamped hard on further art, M.F. Husain then hounded for drawing Hindu goddesses, Rohinton Mistry for discussing the Shiv Sena. Today, if art’s suddenly above politics, those arguing this should demand The Satanic Verses be free in India, to provoke and outrage, awe or bore, do what art does — help us develop the ability to say, “I hate this”, but not with a bomb

seems like the woes for Pakistani artists in India continues to get worse. In fact after the IMPPA (Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association) passed a resolution cautioning members against signing Pakistani artists, the Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) are now planning to call for a ban on films starring Pakistani artists
Later talking on whether the soon to release Karan Johar film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that features Fawad Khan will be affected by their decision, Datar added that given the popular sentiment that has been against the film, it is important that the film’s producer Karan Johar voices his opinion on the silence of Pakistani artists.

Shivaay will benefit hugely and possibly ADHM should not even release if it has to release only in plexes.

        • “Which also explains why none of the Pakistanis who make a living in Mumbai, and have returned home ever since relations between India and Pakistan turned from bitter to hostile, has uttered a word of criticism directed at the Pakistani government or army. At the end of the day their loyalty lies with Pakistan. At a non-ideological level, they need to be mindful of their welfare and that of their families.”

I think lot of celebrities also don’t understand the situation in Pakistan. Its not like India where for opening mouth your movies are banned. In Pakistan, he’ll be shot at directly and you can’t do anything about it. There is nothing one can do about it. Also, its not like all these Pakistani celebrities are living in India all the time.. they hardly come for shoots and back and have to live in Pakistan again. Its not like Indian Govt will start granting them Indian Citizenship (like Adnan Sami) for commenting on their govt actions.

The whole hullabaloo currently is suddenly more than the war but Pakistani artists should comment and criticize their govt or terrorists acts. Arre, even if they comment, what difference is it going to make? When there is no substantial difference who will take such a big risk of their families and their lives? Why does Indian celebs wants them to give out stupid statement to endanger their own lives where they are living? Don’t they how folks are being shot day in and day out there? Amjab Sabri was not a criminal and was an artist and what happened? There’s no protection in Pakistan.

Yes, banning Pak artists from working in India should be fine and then move on. But after that now the debate has turned that even while they are in Pakistan they still need to comment against their own country’s actions? Reason – they did few Indian films? Kya logic hai. Its not like they are Salman Khan’s of Bollywood and have done over 100 films here. All are in struggling phase and their longevity is hardly 2-3 years.

It was good that when MNS gave 48 hour notice.. there wasn’t any Pak artist in India. They usually don’t live here as its too expensive for their little earnings. Ali Zafar has no work from long and Fawad after debut in 2014.. did K&S and ADHM in 2016 and no new movies signed. Mahira khan was always going to be 1 film as she’s already mid 30’s age with family and kids.

So, the topic for media is no Pak artists are commenting against their govt and in support of India. Kuch bhi…

I’d like also add that since the issue happened at LOC and in Kashmir side, its gonna be sensitive topic for anyone to open mouth. But imagine if the Taj incident happened now right in Mumbai or in open where even common public knows what happened then I would have think it would lot more easier to comment than the Uri issue.

Anyways.. movies will be surely banned or boycotted and nothing can stop it now. I hope there are no Pakistani artists completely in Indian movies so in future producers don’t face the loss with sudden change in relation.

  93. Mirziya To Find It Hard To Get An Initial
    Thursday 06 October 2016 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mirziya is looking to be a word of mouth film for multiplexes especially North India as the film does not have face value and the theatrical trailer has not had an impact. The face value is not a huge issue as love stories at this level can have newcomers but the theatrical has really let the film down. The story is a simple love story but trailer is nowhere and will just confuse the filmgoers as to what the is in the film and what it is about. The film is probably told in flashbacks which is fine in the film if the content is there as you have the time but in a promo of couple of minutes it is impossible to show without confusing the audience and that is what has happened with this film.

The music is also so so which hurts a love story. The plus is that the film does look visually good but that won’t help much as far the initial is concerned. North should be better due to the Mirza Sahibaan love story being more famous in North but even here a good strt is a big ask. The big plus for the film is the fall in collections of M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story as after the weekend it looked like it could take on Mirziya on its eighth day but now thats unlikely to happen. It will still be there but won’t be taking the major chunk of the audience as it could have been. Mirziya is from the maker of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which looked a motion feature film rather than a tele film which many Hindi films look nowadays. Even here it looks like a motion feature film but the problem is it looks very unconventional also and that is what is likely to hurt.

  94. You asked It: Is Dhoni A Bigger Star Than Akshay And Hrithik?
    Thursday 06 October 2016 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

    Q. It is being said in the trade that Dhoni is a bigger star than Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar after the opening of The Untold Story. Is it true?
    A. Trade is hundreds of people and some may feel that way but its like comparing apples and oranges. One is a cricketer and the other are actors. the former will pull the crowds on the cricket field and the latter at theatres with correct films. It can be said that Dhoni has also done it in films but thats because its his life story which held curiosity, it does not mean Dhoni in a regular film will do same.
    N. Mehta

    Q. The budget of the M.S. Dhoni: The Untod Story is being quoted very as Dhoni is supposed to have taken 40 or 50 crore but would any producer realistically pay him that much ?
    A. He has not been paid that but around half of that but a similar amount has gone to the Indian cricket board for the huge amount of real footage used in the film. So its between these two factors which have gone towards giving the film a big budget.
    K. Hari

    Q. You had said that the opening day of Mohenjo Daro and Rustom will decide who is a bigger actor Akshay Kumar or Hrithik Roshan so can it be said Akshay Kumar is bigger?
    A. At the present Akshay Kumar is a bigger star and the initial of Rustom proved that.
    Amit Sharma

    Q. Will not this stand by the Indian film industry of not Pakistani actors work in actors hurt film business as they will not release in Pakistan which is a big Overseas market and India also lose a big star like Fawad Khan. Is this a fair decision for the film industry and Pakistani actors?
    A. Fair or not its hard to say but these decisions should be made by governments which sadly they are not. If a foreigner can’t work in the industry you do not give visa and if you want them out you rebuke visa but nothing like that has happened. The Overseas market will be a hurt a little but its a little drop in the ocean if the film was worked in India and Other markets in Overseas. As for big star its a bit of joke, this is all media built. As much can be written about going global but it does not work like that. Its unlikely that a Pakistani actor will ever be a star in India let alone a big star, its the same in Hollywood for Indian actors as masses in West wont take to them. The biggest example is in India itself where Rajnikant is a star like no other that has ever been seen in the South but in North the pull is zero. These boundaries are there and not being broken anytime soon.

Talking about the days when he was shooting his debut film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ he revealed that he had to beg Salman Khan and convince him to wear the costume suggested by the crew.

We all had loved Salman’s look from the song ‘Sajan Ji Ghar Aaye’ .But probably that wasn’t the look in which bahijaan wanted to be in the song. Karan informed that, “I walked in and there was a black suit which his designer Shabina Khan had designed, all set for the big song and Kajol was in this elaborate lehenga and the set was all palatial…and he (Salman) was like ‘Hey, I have an idea! I’m going to wear these torn jeans and white t-shirt and I’m going to, like no f*****g dulha has ever worn torn jeans on his sagaai. And it’s going to set a trend and people are going to go mad”!

Initially Karan felt that Salman was trying to play a prank on him but later realised that he was serious. He consoled the actor saying, “Please it’s my first film, I beg you! Don’t do this to me; wear the black suit. It will look very nice, I promise”. (sic)

“I don’t think he has ever seen a grown man weep like buckets in front of him and he was like yeah, yeah, yeah. Don’t worry, main pehanlunga. Tu rona mat haan, main maar dalunga tujhe, tu rona mat”, Kjo added further.

He concluded his statement stating that, “He wore it, and it was fine. I just couldn’t believe that he was going to wear torn jeans and I did not know what else to do and when in doubt, you cry and I knew he was kind of soft-hearted and he wouldn’t take a huge football in front of him weeping like I did and he wore it and it was fun,”. (sic)

However, Karan’s efforts had come to fruititon after the song had become a huge hit a that time.

The actor plays Mareech in his first Ramleela performance back in his native village; admits he’d like to play Lakshman some day.

An hour before midnight on Wednesday, Nawazuddin Siddiqui went on stage in his native village, Budhana in Uttar Pradesh, and was greeted with wild applause. The internationally acclaimed actor made his Ramleela debut as Mareech, the golden deer who lured Ram away from his hut in the forest so Raavan can abduct Sita.

The perfectionist actor rehearsed for two hours from 3-5pm. Speaking to Mirror while he was getting into costume and make-up, he admitted the Ramleela has fascinated him since he was a child. “It’s held every year in our village during Navrati. My batch mate, Madan Kumar, used to play Ram and I’d make it a point to sit besides him in the college so I could brush shoulders with him. I’ve always wanted to be a part of the Ramleela, but I moved to Haridwar and from there I went to Baroda for further studies. After that I shifted to Delhi to pursue theatre before coming to Mumbai to become a film actor,” Nawaz points out.

This year, after he’d finished with the Raees schedule, shot for Babumoshai Bandykbaaz and a cameo in Mom, seen Ribhu Dasgupta’s Te3n and Sohail Khan’s Freaky Ali through their release, he headed to Budhana for a well-deserved break. From his childhood buddies the 42-year-old actor learnt that a Ramleela run was going on in his hometown. And when his friends suggested he play Mareech, he was game.

The threat of imprisonment terrified the elderly citizen and prompted him to pay $2,000 to the Mira Road gang who operated the tele scam.

  102. I CONDEMN URI ATTACK: SHAFQAT AMANAT ALI
Mumbai: Pakistani singer Shafqat Amanat Ali has come forward as the first artiste from the neighbouring country to condemn the Uri terror attack.

Pakistani artistes, working in Bollywood, have been at the centre of a storm since the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) threatened them to leave India in the wake of the attack and also demanded a ban on them from working in the film industry.

The silence of the artistes on the attack has been questioned and criticised in India.

Shafqat, whose concert in Benguluru was scrapped last month after the terror strike, told a news channel,

“It is a terror attack and I condemn it, I strongly condemn it.”

When asked why other Pakistani artistes haven’t condemned the attack, the singer said,

“As far as I know, Pakistani actors condemn any kind of attack which happens in any part of the world which is against any country because we have been suffering for so many years.

“We know how it feels when your soldier or civilian dies. So, I don’t think any of them would say this (Uri) was right.”

Shafqat said when the attack happened there was anger generated towards Pakistani artistes and that pushed them on the backfoot and hence they did not speak on the issue.

“The moment all this started, people started bashing them. Someone also wrote an open letter to Fawad which pushes you on the backfoot and you start thinking ‘What just happened? Why suddenly an open letter to me?’. Ali Zafar, Fawad, Rahat (Fateh Ali Khan) or me, we will condemn a terror attack in any part of the world.”

The actor had shot some important scenes with lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput, which highlighted the camaraderie between Dhoni and Virat’s characters. The scenes were very crucial to the film, but right before the film’s release, the unfortunate incident of Uri attack took place and all the Pakistani artistes were asked to return to Pakistan and a ban had been imposed on them.

Director Neeraj Pandey had no other option but to completely chop off Fawad’s role from Dhoni’s biopic and release the film without even a glimpse of the star. Neeraj felt it would be a sane decision to do away with Fawad’s role or else his film too would have had to face the political ire and backlash from various quarters. We wonder how Fawad, who wasn’t even aware of this shocking development, would react to his role being chopped off from the film.

Maybe it was an idea originally but no one has shot any scene in the movie.

  106. First step in this direction was to earn revenue worth 15 crore from in-film spots. In addition, they also incorporated music in the film while also heating up the film well as a family affair. That also earned them a very good slot for satellite deals and eventually that along with music further brought in 45 crore. With 60 crore already in their kitty before release, it was time to up the ante.

Next step was to give the film a massive global release that went way beyond 5000 screens. This translated into a major perception around the film being a biggie in the offering. Bulk bookings further helped the cause and a Day One of 21.3 crore took the game to an altogether different level. From this point on, there was no looking back for the film. Yes, given the weekend collections of 66 crore, the film could well have enjoyed a Week One of 100 crore as well. However, even though it has not managed to do that, collections to the tune of 94 crore* are still remarkable by a huge distance.

The film has been retained at a good number of shows despite the arrival of another biggie, Mirzya. Though this would mean that there would be a hit in collections today, good growth is expected on Saturday and Sunday as this is when family crowds would be back in theaters to watch the film.

Another film in the running, Pink, has fetched 64 crore* so far and is a Superhit already. It has to be seen how much further does it go beyond the 66-67 crore mark now.

    *Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources
