  1. Saw Mirzya, I’ll just say 1 thing – its a crime(for movie fanatics) to miss Mirzya on big screen. The story/screenplay is actually not slow(showing 3 stories in 2 hours – two parallel and 1 childhood) but lot of stuff is left for the audience to figure out and its actually fair expectation by Mehra as the story is as old as the hills but then you alienate the massy audience out of the equation. I have many thoughts about the movie and I don’t think I can justify it in my words but it has be seen to be felt. I’ll just that its a commendable effort with unbelievable lyrics, music and Harsh Kapoor is here to stay! RECOMMENDED to watch and feel it once for sure!

    • Harsh Kapoor in his recent interview mentioned that Vikramaditya should have waited with Lootera for him (and not Bhavesh Joshi which he’s doing) and he would have done that role really well. I totally agree that Harsh would have rocked the role and done more justice than even Ranveer Singh. Harsh’s silences speak volumes and he has commanding screen presence!

  2. Mahira Khan still in ‘Raees,’ clarifies Ritesh Sidhwani

After rubbishing reports that the release of ‘Raees’ has been postponed, producer Ritesh Sidhwani refuted rumours that Pakistani actress Mahira Khan will be replaced in the film, after MNS demanded a ban on films featuring Pakistani artists. In Delhi to attend his wife Dolly’s debut show at the fashion week, Ritesh said, “I do not understand where all this is coming from. I would only say one thing – I have shot with the girl for 45 days and finished the film, I hope that clarifies things. I was not reacting to such reports or commenting because I feel that when someone speculates something and you go and respond to it, you are providing a platform to such speculations and rumours. I feel it is better to ignore such things. I don’t want to talk about ‘Raees’, I am here to cheer for my wife.”

  6. Singapore, Oct 12 (IANS) Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan “running around in his glasses and beating up bad guys” long stayed with Hollywood actor Tom Hanks and defined the world of Indian cinema for him. The Oscar-winning actor says the vast expanse of Indian cinema and different storytelling techniques still remain a mystery for the West, with only Bollywood making inroads abroad.

“For a lot of years, Indian movies for us were Big B running around in his glasses and beating up bad guys or midgets and stuff like that. We didn’t quite understand what was going on. If everyone starts speaking the common language of cinema, it will start representing itself,” Tom told IANS in an interview here.

The actor said “it is only a matter of time” till the varied Indian stories spin their way to the West.

“Like the cinema from Japan and China have impacted the entire cinematic narrative of the West like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by Ang Lee. Those guys are working in American films now. The fact is that we have not just been able to see films outside of Bollywood for whatever reason, or outside Satyajit Ray’s films.

“But it is only a matter of time because people in the United States see everything…All you have to do is be available,” he added.

Tom has worked with Indian star Irrfan Khan in his forthcoming Sony Pictures Entertainment’s film Inferno. And he says he is open to attaching his star power to any Indian project, but would not do it “just to break into the marketplace”.

But Tom will not be seen as a super spy climbing on the roof of Taj Mahal or doing stunts on helicopters – he’d rather do a film on “stereotypes of public life in India”.

Be it acting, directing, producing or writing – Tom has explored different arenas of the creative field.

He made his debut with a low-budget movie He Knows You’re Alone in 1979. Following that, Tom became a part of TV series like Bosom Buddies, Taxi and Family Ties, and TV movie Mazes and Monsters.

He got noticed with Disney’s comedy Splash, which became the sleeper hit of 1984. It was Hanks’ charm and upbeat attitude that got him instant stardom.

Today, film buffs, irrespective of age group, know Tom for movies like You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, The Terminal and Forrest Gump, Catch Me If You Can, Cast Away, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan and Captain Phillips.

After presenting Sully this year, Tom will be back on the silver screen with Ron Howard’s Inferno, which will open in India on October 14, two weeks before its US release.

During a conversation with IANS here at an media event organised by Sony Pictures Entertainment, the Tom, 60, said he would like to work in Bollywood — but not “just to break into the marketplace, but as soon as Americans start making movies about the stereotypes of public life in India”.

“It doesn’t have to be super spies climbing on the roof of the Taj Mahal or jumping on helicopters to defeat the bad guys. It will be something next (level) and I look forward to it,” Tom said.

The two-time Oscar-winning star, who is amazed by the bold filming technique in India, said: “The industry in India is sort of like the dream come true. They make a lot of movies, people go to a lot of movies, and there is insatiable appetite for it… I was always amazed at just how dense they were and how they cover more than one genre.”

  7. The decision by Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) to suspend the release of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ in single screen theatres in western India is the result of a ‘conspiracy’, says controversial actor Kamaal R Khan, who was earlier targeted by Ajay Devgn for promoting the Karan Johar directorial.

Guild extends support to forthcoming film ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’

Ajay had earlier this year allegedly said that Karan paid Kamaal Rs 25 lakh to tweet positively about ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and to give negative reviews to ‘Shivaay’, which he has directed and acted in.

Kamaal spoke up in favour of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ on Friday after COEAI announced that ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ won’t release in single screen theatres in Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat, due to the presence of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in it.

Condemning the decision made by COEAI, Kamaal tweeted: “These cinema owners are cowards who are trying to harass film makers. It’s a big conspiracy by some BJP darlings.”

He added: “All officials of Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) should be kicked on their a** if they will ever lift this ban again.”

“Ban on films of Pakistani artists is only to stop release of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ so that ‘Shivaay’ can get solo release and I think it’s bad way to get solo release.”

“If you trust your work and your film, then you don’t need to stop release of someone’s film to get solo release. Instead you should compete at box office.”

The COEAI has over 400 members.

The decision comes amid India-Pakistan tensions following a terror attack which killed 19 Indian soldiers. The Indian Army then carried out surgical attacks on terrorist launch pads across the LoC.

  8. M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story (Hindi) grossed in the 1-1.25 crore nett range on its third Friday taking its total to 109.50 crore nett which now makes it the fourth highest nett grosser of the year as it goes ahead of the Housefull 3 nett collections. The trend in the third week is better than the second week though there is no support of holidays like in the second week. It is pre Diwali period period but all the films around it are doing very poor which is allowing M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story to benefit. Tax exemption in UP and Maharashtra is also a big benefit. The collections of M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story till date are as follows

    Week One – 84,64,00,000

    Week Two – 23,50,00,000 apprx

    Day 15 – 1,25,00,000 aprx

    TOTAL – 1,09,13,00,000

The other releases of the week fared poorly including the Hollywood release Inferno. The best film of the Hindi films was Saat Uchakkey with a similar response to last weeks Tutak Tutak Tutiyan.

  9. Dishoom became the highest rated film on television as far as 2016 releases are concerned. The numbers it recorded were excellent and if we convert some of the old TRP rating into Barc then it is bigger than films like Kick, Dhoom 3 and Rowdy Rathore. The theatre footfalls of Dishoom were 76 lakh apprx and and if we add to its premier television showing numbers its a total of over 1.70 crore making it the third most watched film of 2016 after Sultan and Housefull 3. It comfortably beats Airlift by around 20 lakhs and the television numbers of the second biggest grosser of 2016 Rustom are yet to come. Sultan leads with only its theatre footfalls with television yet to be added. The rating are impressions (BARC) which is basically the number of television sets that viewed the films on their respective premieres.

1920 London was a rare bright spot for horror genre a few weeks back. The film did phenomenally well for the horror genre. Sultan will be making its way on to television screens in mid October and will hit top spot for 2016 but remains to be seen if it can beat the record of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

  10. The multiplexes haven’t made up their mind yet, and none was forthcoming to speak on the issue, officially. However, a source from a Mumbai multiplex chain, on the condition of anonymity, told BT, “It’s a Karan Johar film, so it has an urban appeal and is predominantly meant for the multiplex audience. The single screens have ‘Shivaay’. All multiplexes hold meetings on Tuesdays, to discuss the forthcoming Friday’s release, so a decision will be taken only three days prior to release. I don’t see why multiplexes will not screen this film. No one would like to lose out on business, especially during Diwali. Political parties creating a ruckus is not new, we will need the police to cooperate.”

    Rajesh Thadani, Distributor:
“I think only the business in these four states will get affected. The number of screens supporting the decision hasn’t come out yet. There is always a possibility of a settlement where no one suffers.”

    Sunil Bansal, Distributor-Exhibitor:
“The association should have a liberal attitude and not penalise films that are ready for release. After all, our fellow Indian’s money is at stake. Movies that are ready for release and those that have been shot should not be harmed. If they want to ban actors, they should take this stand for films that are yet to begin.”

Balkrishna Shroff, Director, Shringar Films Pvt Ltd
“The Government of India has not banned any Pakistani artiste from working in India. The CBFC, which is also a government body, has not taken any such stand either. This uproar is more about public sentiments. I received 47 calls yesterday from single-screen owners, saying they want to release the film. I feel just because the issue revolves around Bollywood, it has garnered a lot of attention.”

    Harsh Jain, distributor-exhibitor:
“This theatre owners’ association primarily covers single screens in Mumbai, Nasik and Pune. They don’t have any legal right to ban any film. At most, they can ask their members to not release a film as a precautionary measure. No sensible exhibitor will ban any film, it will only hit his revenue. I’m completely against this ban. I believe art and politics should not be mixed. Even if you want to ban any actor, the release of films already-completed should not be jeopardised. Lastly, the Government says that they don’t have any problem with any Pakistani artiste coming and working in India. Political parties have their own agendas, nothing more.”

Vandan Shah, owner of Rupam Cinema, Ahmedabad:
“We have only heard that COEAI is planning to ban the release of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in single-screen theatres, but we haven’t received any word, officially. We are holding a meeting on Monday and the matter will become clearer after that. As of now, we are not making any announcement.”

    Ashoke Pandit, Vice-President, IMPPA:
“We didn’t want to stall the release of Karan’s film or impact its release in any manner. But our ban was to stop filmmakers from involving Pakistani talent in future. We made ample effort to talk to MNS and convince them to not stop the film, but not once did Karan talk to us or support us in any manner. He is paying the price for his silence. He didn’t condemn the Pakistani artistes when they didn’t comment on the Uri attacks, he should have. It will make a huge dent in his business if the single screens stick to their decision. It’s a cluster that he cannot ignore.”

Its a dull phase at the box office but because of practically no competition this film is getting benefit as its the only decent film being screened. The tax exemptions are also benefiiting the film as Maharashtra is holding much better than it normally would and UP is doing far more business than Delhi city and its was a lesser gap in the first week. The film can also lead the box ofice next week as far as Hindi films are concerned which may help it to a 120 crore nett plus total. The collections of M.S. • I am just not able to understand your thinking behind such postings. What actually are you trying to prove that has NOT been known to the world? PINK is for a niche audience. There ARE no 2 ways about it. What it has achieved within its intended demographic is highly commendable. All this talk of ‘REPEAT’ audience is literally laughable. There is a REPEAT audience; but that repeat audience is a sub-set of the folks who watched or are interested in such films in the first place.

What are you trying to compare PINK to? Your idol’s SULTAN? You are not even comparing apples to oranges..you are plain comparing apples to pork!!!

What-ever link you put up or what-ever you say with regard to PINK, it is a big success in terms of its reach and what it says about a 74 year-young super-star who is a super–star AFTER his prime!!!

      • Think he meant in general and not about pink. The movies are coming on TV within 2 months sometimes even earlier.

        • I think he or she specifically meant PINK. I know what his or her ulterior motives are but I just wanted to point that out .. for instance, this ‘person’ could have been as concerned about NEERJA as well; but wasn’t ..so you get the drift or anxiety of tryin to put Amitabh and the ghost-driver in the same basket of ‘superstars’…

Yes the movies might be coming in earlier..but what’s ‘novel’ here with regard to sane discussions? Whoever ever discussed PINK as being a massy product?

        • An Jo generally I avoid your misgivings here, but I feel you may need to take another break. Why so serious?

Since you brought up Sultan, I was actually defending big movies for not getting repeat audience due to quick TV release, hence unable to mount big totals after a 5 day flying start. If audience can sense this pattern they may resist going to theatre a second time solely due to monetary reasons / ticket prices unless of course it’s a 3 idiots kind of fun movie sprinkled in a long holiday season.

This is more detrimental for small / niche movie for getting such a quick TV release. If the audience gets the impression to get a TV release within a month of its release, more purse strings will be pulled thereby harming such movies.

Pink is an absolute success for its niche audience so please be upbeat being its target audience.

Please refrain from giving advises. They are not asked for.

I should have stayed away from you just as I have all these days. In a world where the acting ‘capabilities’ of Aamir Khan are questioned vis-a-vis a Salman Khan(!!?*), it’s ridiculous of me to expect some semblance of reality.

And the reason I replied was I have been seeing your tendency to hyperbole when it comes to your idol and suddenly find loop-holes when it comes to other actors’ successes or failures [check your ‘need’ below to respond to SRK]. And it’s not just this statement on PINK that made me reply. You made a statement on MS DHONI film saying something to the order of ‘ unlike all the ….Kars of the world who are paper tigers.’ Firstly, there was NO need to bring up Tendulkar here [it is pretty clear you allude to Sachin here, unless you MEAN you were talking of Agarkar]. Secondly, you forgot the basic fact that it was Sachin who started the art of pioneering unconventional shots to whom all the batsmen of today are grateful for. If Sachin Tendulkar who single-handedly won many matches is a paper tiger, then well, as I said before, I really should’t be in your bubble.

After my reply, you have come up with some logic explaining your statement and patting yourself on your back for being some ‘un-prejudiced’ lover of cinema. Maybe you will come up with something for the ‘paper-tigers’ statement too.

I will definitely try my best to stay as far away from you as possible.

        • Calling Tendulkar a paper tiger is beyond atrocious. There ain’t a player in Indian cricket history who has done more. He’s popularised a sport even more, all the big money is more attributable to him then anyone else. The sponsorships etc.

Tendulkar, Salman or a Dhoni are not our maai baap…people target them & abuse them all over the place and even on this blog and it shouldn’t bother us. The only thing is , we should be respectful towards each other and avoid personal attack on the blogs.

It seems the issue was something else & Pink tweet was just a diversion. Since you love Marathi cinema let me make your day with this tweet if it makes you happier !

        • Further to clarify on Tendulkar and other cricketing legends, it’s always an opinion plus you must discount for a north-south & east-west divide so it all boils down to style of play one prefers. What I am personally pleased is Dhoni has dismantled the big guns who were only interested in cementing their place and accumulating runs and chasing records. He has made winning his objective and injected youth play and brought street smart players like a Jadeja, Raina, and Ashwin & some real hard working talent. It gives me immense pleasure to see players like Umesh Yadav and Shami in the team sweating it out. Our team now plays what Pakis were under Imran Khan in ’92.

I have immense respect for Vengsarkar a truly gutsy player and selfless too. Since you brought up Agarkar let’s discuss him too as there was a running joke about Agarkar continued inclusion in the Indian team & how nation would hold breath in final overs kitna pitegaa whenever he came to bowl towards the end.

Gavaskar had issues while playing and made life hell for Kapil and gang but over time he has became a better person and great reader of the game after retiring.

  18. Bigg Boss 10 review: Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone and commoners rock the premiere episode
Bigg Boss 10: Salman Khan’s show is off to a good start.

Bigg Boss 10 is finally back. 108 days of pure entertainment at the expense of contestants who are locked up in the Bigg Boss house. Sadistic as it may sound, we all enjoy it, right? Salman Khan returns as the host for the 10th season again. And his mad hosting skills topped with attitude and sense of humour are gonna make the weekends, over the next three months, uber entertaining. For weekdays, we have one kickass list of contestants. This season not only has celebrities competing for the coveted spot of the winner but commoners will also be locked up in the house, and fight for the winner’s trophy and prize money. The concept certainly has all of us looking forward to the upcoming episodes. The premiere episode of Bigg Boss 10 was not as glamorous as it used to be with premiere episodes of previous seasons. Despite of Deepika Padukone’s presence, who was there to promote her upcoming Hollywood debut venture xXx: Return of Xander Cage, the episode’s glamour quotient was low.

Sultan was Salman’s blockbuster release this year, so of course, he had to perform on the hit songs from the film. Baby ko Bass Pasand Hai and humko bhi. It was a total Sallu bhai style performance that fans could not stop cheering to.

And thus began the show. Every celebrity contestant was introduced along with a non-celebrity contestant. First up were Om Swami and Lopamudra Raut. The first set of contestants was so interesting that our excitement reached whole another level to have a look at the next ones. Then came, Manveer Gurjar and Nitibha Kaul. Rohan Mehra entered the house next. So far so good.

Then entered Deepika Padukone on the sets of Bigg Boss to raise the temperature. She was there to promote her upcoming film xXx: Return of Xander Cage with a new trailer, which is so kick ass. Totally loved the trailer. Deepika was wearing a dress that was somewhat a hybrid of her Mastani’s warrior costume and Serena Unger’s sexy outfit. She then entered the house and interacted with the contestants.

More contestants entered the house, and we realised that non celeb contestants are going to be more interesting than than the celebs. What energy, what madness – this bunch is sure a mad mad one. This season is going to be super entertaining. The decision to have non celebrities might just work out in the favour of the show, and get it TRPs like never before….”

  19. TV / Media these days is full of clash & trash talk between ADHM and Shivaay and something never change and this is so typical of bollywood. In my opinion both parties take this as a business decision so why do they get so emotional and start lashing out at each other towards the end & so much infightings to claim superiority. Shouldn’t it be simply business like !

Kaabil- Raees clash is another nonsensical media circus in the making. It gets messier with involvement of a Pakistani actor Mahira Khan. But this one SRK deserves all the flak firstly for undercutting Indian talent and then it’s never a good idea to make a movie and sit on it for 2 years. He did this with Fan and paid a heavy price and it seems will do the same for Raees. Similarly Ring or whatever is being filmed with Imtiaz is another one with no release schedule and will again drift upon completion.

In current state of affairs, Dear Zindagi is a serious test for him on his standings and to ascertain if the charm with audience is anywhere close. If there is too much worldly gyaan there to help Alia find true love, audience will show him the middle finger… !

Incidentally yesterday I got blocked from srk’s twitter feed. After reading his tweet that went like gravity is not greater than God …something I called him a ‘Gyaandu’ and sent a brief description of what it means in Delhi. It is not a vulgar word as such but a bit cheesy way to refer people giving gyaan in north india. It seems he read the tweet hence blocked me.

Looking at his recent tweets and state of mind god help that movie Ring too. He was posting similar inane tweets while filming Fan like the one below and only he knows what he meant –

  23. Every film has its own destiny, Harshvardhan on “Mirzya” failure

Harshvardhan Kapoor is not bogged down with his debut film “Mirzya” failing to make a mark at the box-office. The actor accepts the failure, and says that the movie is not for everybody.

“Well, obviously ‘Mirzya’ didn’t do well at the box-office which is fine. It’s not a film for everybody,” Harshvardhan said.

He added: “Every film has its own destiny. I feel ‘Mirzya’ is a work of art. It is a beautiful film and it will find its place in course of time.”

The son of actor Anil Kapoor talked about the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ambitious project at the red carpet of Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards on Saturday night.
Apart from Harshvardhan, “Mirzya” marked debut of Saiyami Kher, and narrated Mehra’s take on the folklore of Mirza-Sahiba.

Harshvardhan feels “the audience is used to seeing newcomers presented in a certain way”.

“I didn’t do any of the conventional things. In terms of look or the character, I kept a huge beard and played a rustic character. Moreover, the love story is explained through its music so there is a lot of new things for viewers to take,” said the 25-year-old.

Now, Harshvardhan is focusing on his next project “Bhavesh Joshi”.

        • You’ve certainly said proper commercial, but don’t recall you saying rewriting records. This is a first.

Jumping on the pre release bandwagon?

        • I remember saying the reason he has opted for christmas release is because this is an out and out commercial movie and can put in numbers. I don’t know if i mentioned records but my intention was saying this is a commercial movie…On opening, I think this can open like PK…a 25 cr types and then go on from there..I don’t know how to pull my comment out but i know i was bullish on this

  25. On entering the ‘Bigg Boss’ house, Om Swami narrated a story to Deepika Padukone, who was the first celebrity guest on the show, about how late Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor visited him in India. Om Swami claimed that Elizabeth Taylor’s outfit angered him as it was “revealing and transparent” and so he kicked her on the waist.
Om Swami claimed that he ‘cured’ Elizabeth Taylor of her chronic backache with his kick. Deepika Padukone’s reaction to Swami ‘bragging’ was as awkward as you can imagine.

Wheelchair-Bound Man Thrashed In A Theatre For Not Standing During National Anthem

Writer and disability activist, Chorao-based Salil Chaturvedi, was in a multiplex in Panaji when he came across the shock of his life. He was viciously assaulted during the national anthem.
His fault? The spinal injury, due to which, he could not rise to his feet while the national anthem was being played.

The aftermath of this ugly, absurd incident is that Chaturvedi has not gone back to the movies. “I can’t go,” he says, “I’m afraid someone will hit me even harder, and worsen my spinal injury. I just don’t understand why it seems impossible for so many people to express patriotism in a non-aggressive manner.”
