  3. Industry Yet To See A 200 Crore Diwali

Diwali is one of the three main release dates along with Eid and Christmas and clashes tend to happen more often on this date as more makers tend to target Diwali as was traditionally seen as the best time to release though things have changed now. It will be the third time that there will be a major clash on Diwali this decade. Diwali despite being one of the major holidays has yet to hit the 200 crore nett mark be it if one release came or two with the highest mark coming last year with Prem Ratan Dhan Payo at 194 crore. Even if we add the dubbed formats which Diwali releases tend to have, the films still fall short of 200 crore. The last four Diwali’s have given similar numbers with a cumulative in the between the 180-200 crore nett mark. It remains to be seen if Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay can go better. The figures of the Diwali releases this decade are as follows..

You Asked It: Will Diwali Clash Decide 5th and 6th Top Actor

    Q. Will Diwali clash between Shivaay and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil decide the fifth or sixth biggest star of the country as when Rustom and Mohenjo Daro clashed you said it was a battle for fourth place and Akshay Kumar won.
    A. It normally would as Ajay Devgn and Ranbir Kapoor are in those positions and head to head gives a result especially if its a clear win. But here it s different as its Pre Diwali and some circuits are normal but others don’t really start collecting after Diwali. Also there is anti Pakistan sentiment among the public in the country and no one knows how that will play out for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil when it releases on Friday.

    Q. Why is the business lesser on Diwali than Eid on Christmas?
    A. There are lesser holidays though the day after Diwali is the best day for collections in the year. Also the better content films have come on Eid and Christmas over the last few years and we have not seen that big blockbuster to see where Diwali can actually go.
    Amit Raj

    Q. Your reports have negative sides for practically every film even hit ones barring Sultan why is this?
    A. There is a plus and minus for all films and a report has to balance that out. For Sultan there are hardly any negatives so nothing much can be said on that side. Even for Sultan, the write ups would have had points about under performance it may have had in some areas.
    M. Ragod

    Q. What will be the worldwide business of Pink and Dhoni?
    A. Pink is 109 crore and M.S Dhoni – The Untold Story will finish at around 192-195 crore in Hindi.

    • Arnab does well to explain us the origin of his thoughts and also the internal struggles from which his current attitude is originating. After listening to him here, he seems genuine and not a phony out to get quick fame by any means. I am impressed with his clear line of thinking in the Indian context.

The only issue one can have is his argument about deciding for others what is right and wrong. Real journalism lets the viewer / reader make up his mind and only facts be reported. Even an opinionated Bill O’Reilly with all his partisan rant keeps putting his disclaimers – ‘this is what I think.’ Arnab should learn the clever choice of words whenever he sticks his neck out on an issue. But for a complex nation like India a bit of leeway can be given to make it hard hitting. Anyway media bias is a now a worldwide phenomena and they now yield enough power to change minds.
The roller coaster of US elections is a prime example where media first made Trump in the Primaries and now deconstructing him in general elections.

I am not sure if Arnab is referring to Roshan Abbas there in the video who was known to be a very loud mouth at Hindu College, North Campus and got beaten up on campus couple of times. Even Arjun Rampal was at Hindu during those days biking around in leather jackets picking girls on those Delhi winter nights. I can connect with his discussions here with all his Mandal / Babri Masjid talks and the changing climates at North Campus in Delhi…!!! plus the liberalisation era had just set in…..

  7. Jaya Bachchan compared the content of Indian films made in the 1950s and 1960s to the ones created now while praising Bimal Roy at a session on the legendary director at the Jio MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival with Star on Tuesday.

“Filmmakers at that time, created art. Today, it’s a business and all about numbers. Everything is thrown at our face. People have forgotten subtlety. Open display of affection is considered smart… sharam naam ki toh cheese hee nahi hai (people are no longer ashamed). Now, it’s about big collections at the box office, Rs 100 crore films, first weekend collection…It’s all Greek to me,” said the 68-year-old actress, known for films like “Guddi”, “Abhimaan” and “Silsila”.

She even asked how many characters in cinema represented our country?

She believes that most characters of Indian films seem to be inspired by the West.

“I don’t know why. Maybe, they are richer countries and are considered more progressive. But I think the Indian mind is very progressive,” she said.

Jaya Bachchan, whose belongs to the illustrious family of Bollywood, says there are a few films though that present the Indian culture.

“People like ‘Aligarh‘ and ‘Masaan‘ because they show the real India and real problems of India,” said the wife of megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

Emphasising on the fact that cinema is a visual medium, she said that one can show emotions or say what they want to in a subtle way, without being loud.

“I get stressed out when I see this kind of cinema. I need to run away to some quiet place,” said the actress, who has also acted in films like “Drona” and “Fiza”.

Bimal Roy’s son Joy Roy, who was also part of the session at the film festival, said that now there is no difference between a vamp and a heroine.

“Earlier, there used to be a vamp and a heroine. But now, there is no need for a vamp because the heroine does exactly what a vamp does. She wears itsy bitsy clothes and dances, does item songs,” he said.

“Regional cinema stays true to India. It’s Bollywood that is married to money. Bollywood is mostly made by Mumbai centric people influenced by the West, even their thought process is western. They look at western cinema. That’s why there are so many rip-offs (of western movies),” he added.

Another panelist, a popular screenwriter and editor Apurva Asrani said that the audience also needs to take the responsibility. He said that Chaitanya Tamhane’s critically acclaimed Marathi film “Court“, which was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars, didn’t have many viewers when it was screened at a festival.

“Recently, ‘Court‘ was playing at a festival and very few people turned up. We, as an audience, need to take the responsibility ourselves instead of pointing at Bollywood. The industry… it is also a trade. They are catering to you,” he said.

  8. ‘We Should Be Responsible’: Ajay Devgn On Anurag Kashyap’s Tweets To PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Actor Ajay Devgn had strong words when asked about director Anurag Kashyap’s tweets which questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lahore and demanded an apology. The actor said, “We should be responsible about what we were saying,” adding, “These are people who spoil things”.

“You can’t retaliate in such a way that you have no idea what you are saying, so be responsible enough on what you are saying and what you mean,” he said. “When you make these statements it goes anti, so keep quiet and let it sort things.”

On October 16, Mr Kashyap in a series of tweets, had expressed solidarity with film-maker Karan Johar, whose film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” was under fire for featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. A group of theatre-owners across four states had refused to screen it.

Mr Devgn argued that PM Modi’s visit to Islamabad at the time was not “politically wrong”. “He went to sort things. Didn’t happen. The scenario is different then and now,” he added.

  9. The advance of the two movies are hit by Pre-Diwali as it happens every year. The two releases put together will hardly do 15 to 20 crs IMO. This is probably the worst period for the movie to release. Saturday and Sunday might even drop from Friday. Shivaay will be impacted more as action movies tend to better in North where Pre-Diwali has max effect. South will be unaffected as always.
Friday to Sunday is going to be very cold. Monday onwards whichever has good reports will jump huge.

Any other date on the calendar seems better than diwali these days.

did Ajay Devgan take responsibility of delivering one dabba film after the other. at least Kashyap makes cinema which is in another stratosphere compared to what Devgan dishes out. the only decent film that devgan starred in like forever was Drishyam, and that was supposedly lame compared to Mohanlal’s original.

that’s the issue with these experienced stars in India. they think they’re at a level above everyone else and it’s only their opinions that matter. any counter opinion is dissed off as irresponsible.

Shivaay is different cinema and should be encouraged. We claim we need diversity and quality and yet lineup for the mushy ADHMs.

        • yes SOS did more than ok given the competition. But the competition also didn’t do too well which helped. Also SOS was the remake of a Southern hit. The point is that with Shivaay he doesn’t have any such advantage. All said and done if I were betting money at this point I’d say Shivaay is a total failure and ADHM is decent or better. I thought more of the latter’s box office prospects initially but don’t anymore. I think even a film that is liked to some degree here might not yield big numbers. Still there is a chance for ADHM to be a proper hit. Would be extremely surprised if Shivaay turned out to be this. By the way I like some of the action sequences here myself, I just have serious doubt about the rest of the film. And it’s supposed to be almost 3 hrs long!

          Like

        • the other thing I’d say here is that no one has a ‘chokehold’ without reason. It only happens when your film is considered better in the box office sense. yes such a production house can take unfair advantage of its clout but that too is part of the game. Do you think Salman would have a screen problem in the same situation?

          Like

        • Actually Salman is a much bigger than KJo or anyone else, ATM,
          for that matter.

But anyway, the number of and preferred ‘screens’ and show timings is a much deeper and organized polity which is beyond the scope of this blog.

    • Ajay Devgan did not demonstrate any guts here. He was shaken when he learnt that Kjo was releasing his film too on Diwali week. He had not expected it. That is the reason for all the animosity.

Devgan is clearly very insecure, joined by Kajol, who has risked years of friendship with Johar to support her husband. I do not get this spouse-centered behaviour. I personally detest it. Kajol has no credible body of work, if you leave out the film she did with Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar. This mentality of standing with one’s spouse at the cost of friends who have contributed significantly in your life and career demonstrates to me a sense of misplaced loyalty and a tasteless attitude. At the very least, you can stay out of the fight!

Gupt is remembered for its music, and Dushman I don’t think contributed anything towards her stardom. You just need to look at her body of work to see what’s in there. No variation of roles, no versatility, and one bread and butter film – DDLJ.

  14. Shivaay & Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Advance Bookings Report |

Two biggies, Shivaay and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil are all set to hit the theaters tomorrow and the advance bookings have already begun in full swing. According to early trends, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is showing a better booking for morning shows at the multiplexes and in big cities.

Shivaay on the other hand has started off a little slower than ADHM. The film has managed to show better bookings in smaller cities.

Karan Johar’s romantic drama on the other hand is finding more buzz in the North circuits such as Delhi and could contribute hugely for its first day business.

According to the advance booking report, it looks like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil may take a lead on the opening day. Of course, the weekend figures will be dependent hugely on the critics response and also the word of mouth.

    Film: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
    Director: Karan Johar
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan
    Stars: 2.5 out of 5

Heartbreak and unrequited love are gut-wrenching. Director Karan Johar makes it his mission to emotionally pummel us with them in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
Led by a supremely good-looking quartet, this romantic quadrangle is the lovechild that would result if two films — Johar’s own friendship-meets-love saga Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and the Hollywood tearjerker A Fault In Our Stars — were to indulge in a torrid affair.
The free-sprited Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) meets a wealthy bachelor with his own private jet Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) at a nightclub in London.

Kapoor is like an adorable, angst-prone puppy. But he is thick-headed too. Being spurned multiple times by the same woman doesn’t make him any wiser and his relentless pursuit of Alizeh isn’t too convincing.
Why would a guy with a private jet who becomes an internet sensation like Justin Bieber yearn for the same woman for so many years? It just seems like a waste of a good life. We gave our hearts to Devdas once. Do we need a modern Devdas? No, thank you.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who plays an alluring poetess, does what’s asked of her. Saba, her character, pouts and purrs. But her role doesn’t go beyond what you see in the trailer.
Also, loving Alizeh and Ayaan wasn’t instantaneous. It takes time to warm up to them. By the time you connect to them, Johar inserts an emotionally-manipulative, tragic twist to the entire farce.
Fawad Khan, who is written on the credit rolls as “special appearance” isn’t given much heft to make his role special. His love story with Alizeh, which showed immense promise, seems to have been killed unceremoniously. What went wrong between Alizeh and his character is skimmed over and leaves you wanting more.
So why would you give this love story a chance? The endearing performances from the lead cast.

Kapoor steals the thunder from the two women. His anguish and his propensity to wail when he’s dumped makes him immensely lovable. Reserve this for a one-time watch. What’s not to love about a posh posse who are stupid and stubborn in love?

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil review: Old formula with a comic twist
    Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
    Directed by Karan Johar
Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma
Now playing at theatres in the UAE
    Rating: 2.5/5

    http://www.khaleejtimes.com/citytimes/bollywood/ae-dil-hai-mushkil-review-karan-johar-recycles-formula-with-comic-twist

“…..But if you are looking to see if Johar has evolved as a director, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil makes you realise that he is stuck in that comfortable milieu that he can only shake very occasionally. He is happy peddling formula and also laughing at it. This man knows the audience – so he plays to the gallery.

At a point Alizeh tells Ayan, boys are like movies – you have superhits and time-passes; and interest in time-passes fails rapidly and they flop. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is time-pass – its appeal walks the thin line on how star-crossed and how mushy you are”.

    • Krk is doing right what is expected of him.

      1. He claimed Shivaay was a flop very early on due to budget. (Last week Devgan put the records right- no fees for actor and director or big co-stars- money was instead spent on production and movie sold at normal price for a Devgan movie).

      2. KRK claimed to have been paid by KJo to bash Shivaay on phone recording.

      3. He then accused Devgan of using political threat for trying to ban ADHM.

      4. He was claiming yesterday that unnamed members of Shivaay crew were saying themselves that the film is crap and that the performance of the actresses were poor!

He is at war with Devgan and while Shivaay may turn out to be bad or good, Krk is doing right what is expected of him: bash Shivaay, give it the worst possible review and praise ADHM.

For KRK, ADHM is an inexpensive movie, despite the huge promos campaign, lavish, candy floss sets, abroad shoots and fees of Ranbir, Anushka, Aishwarya and Fawad + 5cr to the soldiers. The next predictable thing is to expect him to call it the biggest masterpiece of recent times. Would make no sense at all if he doesn’t.

He is not important for those outfits. Even I had feeling of hatred towards Pakistanis to certain degree but having met many, that has evaporated.

But I still have problem that they are not doing enough to force their Govt to do right things.

      Like

      • He’s responding to the larger hysteria around this issue. Also he’s not drunk at all..! On the rest though here’s how I would put it. Have you ever seen the kinds of things happen to US actors when they say all sorts of things against their govt that happens to Indian actors? From endorsements dropping to other kinds of pressures? Now if a number of actors and/or public figures choose not to say much one can understand why. They can of course say these things but there is a ‘cost’ to saying them. In the US there is none whatsoever for a similar figure. Now one could question India and say ‘if it is a democracy why aren’t the very same standards available here?’. This would be a fair question but also a naive one. Because India is an extraordinary democracy relative to its history and continuing challenges and so on, specially when compared with many other countries that had a similar history of colonialism. Pakistan is the most obvious example across the border but even Bangladesh to a certain extent. However if one compares Indian democracy in absolute terms with say the US model or a Western European model there are immediate and glaring contrasts. Just voting does not make a democracy without the institutional guarantees afforded by the same. Similarly the strength or weakness of a democracy can also be measured by the extra-legal power institutions and various political actors exercise in various situations. In India this extra-legal power is practiced to an extraordinary degree. I can’t think of a democracy worthy of the name (not talking about basket-case democracies) which is worse at this level.

Why do I bring up all of this? Because when all of this is true with respect to India consider how much worse by an order of magnitude all of this is in Pakistan where the military runs things one way or the other. It is much easier for me to assume that it is not malice that prevents actors like Fawad Khan from saying something (when they’ve had nothing but great experiences in India and have advanced their careers in India and so on) criticizing their govt and far more fear that is the cause. Now if they say something against the Orlando shootings or whatever well there their govt is not implicated. They are ‘allowed’ to say that. Similarly when children are gunned down in Peshawar ‘everyone’ criticizes this in Pakistan. Again they are ‘allowed’ to agree with the general sentiment. But when it happens in India, with the implicit or explicit support of the military establishment in Pakistan to criticize such an attack is to also implicitly criticize the State whether one does so openly or not. There are consequences for doing these things in places like Pakistan. Now I would celebrate a Fawad Khan who had the courage to nonetheless say these things but I can’t really hold him to that bar. Much as I’d love for Indian actors to be as vocal about many things as American actors. Here it cannot even be said that the costs are as high for them as Pakistani actors. But still they don’t say many things and most of them avoid saying anything about politics. Again it’s easier to assume they fear the consequences than that they don’t have political views.

Condemning the Pakistani state and especially the military establishment is one thing. But one can’t apply the same standards to the nation. We can’t on the one hand criticize the Pakistani nation for all its obvious problems and then expect people there to act exactly like those in another nation that’s far more stable in every sense. It’s not just Pakistan. There are many other countries in the world that are much more stable than Pakistan where you still cannot say many things. At least not without cost. Again I am always for people who are heroic enough to say these things. people are heroic even in impossible situations. But that’s again not a standard we can use as the normal one.

I’d also say this finally. The gap between what people can say/ought to say is massive between Pakistan and India but at least as much of a gap is evident when one compares India to the US. But as Indians we never question that bit of the equation. Take your own example. If you had a certain attitude about Pakistanis which changed only when you had a different experience the question you should have first asked is: what else is my govt teaching me that is questionable in the same way? And this applies to every govt, without exception. This is precisely why I have such a deep distrust of nationalism. Because certain things seem ‘true’ to citizens just because their govts assert them. We believe certain things just because they’re part of our nationalist fiction. But every culture, every nation, cannot be the ‘best’ in the world at the very same time. And yet so many nation-states (if not all) assert this at the very same time. It’s not just about the nation-state. ‘Truth’ (however one defines the term) cannot depend on ‘party’ or ‘nation’ or ‘religion’ or ‘race’ or ‘class’ or ‘gender’ or ‘parent’ or ‘spouse’ or whatever!

If I might repeat something here life is not about ‘learning’ but ‘unlearning’. Or rather both are deeply linked. One cannot really learn unless one is willing to unlearn all the biases and prejudices and value judgments one has grown up with.

        • Incidentally the same standard does not apply when it’s about Pakistanis living outside Pakistan. There they clearly don’t face the same pressures.

But if Indian girls start to drool even after one neighbouring country actor or chai-wallah, then Indian guys become so insecure and start accusing us about lack of patriotism.

How is Ajay Devgn making a movie about having a fling with a Bulgarian woman and forcing her to have a child outside of marriage with him being classified as sanskaari and patriotic? If it had been made with genders reversed it would have been called a bold or wannabe film. It shows that so called patriots think the national pride only resides in men and women are just like war trophies. Any girl who supports this type of nationalism is stupid.

This is revealing. One saw the same thing with Pyar Toh Hona Tha, where the other guy (Kajol’s fiance) was portrayed terribly. He’s shown as a hypocrite, a weakling, a quitter, and they deliberately took a bad actor to make Devgan look better. With Shivaay, this looks like a pattern in both real and reel life. I’m sure I’m not reading too much when I say this reveals an innate egoism and insecurity.

I normally like Ajay, but he has been needlessly picking up fights, and getting upset about film clashes. He isn’t making any masterpieces anyway.

    http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movie/shivaay/critic-review/

It’s not every day that you get to witness the clash of two gigantic films at the Box-Office. There have been times when two big films that got released on the same day and in some cases like LAGAAN and GADAR EK PREM KATHA (June 15, 2001), DIL and GHAYAL (June 22, 1990), both the releases managed to succeed at the box office. Despite releasing on the same date, these films proved to be blockbusters at the Box-Office. This week sees the release of two gigantic films in the form of SHIVAAY and AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL. Will the ‘divine intervention’ help the action packed SHIVAAY to outpower the mushy AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL or will it prove otherwise, let’s analyze.

SHIVAAY is an emotional action thriller that touches upon the relationship between a father and his daughter and the extent to which he goes for her. The film starts off with the fearless daredevil Shivaay (Ajay Devgn) helping the Indian Army in an assignment amidst the snow-clad mountains and dangerous terrains. This is followed by him leading a group of enthusiastic mountaineers to an expedition. On this expedition, he meets Olga Paramski (Erika Kaar). Gradually, they both fall in love and have a love child Gaura (Abigail Eames). After the birth of Gaura (who is mute by birth), Olga leaves both, Shivaay and Gaura, in order to live her life in her home country Bulgaria. Post that, Shivaay looks after Gaura as a single parent and tells her that her mother is dead. But, one day, when Gaura discovers the truth about her mother, she gets very angry at Shivaay for lying to her. In order to pacify her, Shivaay takes Gaura to Bulgaria to meet her mother Olga. It is here that Gaura gets kidnapped by unknown human traffickers. Thereafter starts Shivaay’s search for his daughter Gaura. He is helped by Anushka (Sayyeshaa), Wahab (Vir Das) and Sharma (Saurabh Shukla). Does Shivaay manage to trace Gaura as well as Olga in the unknown country of Bulgaria, what are the obstacles that he faces while searching Olga and Gaura, what role does Anushka play in Shivaay’s life is what forms the rest of the film.

When SHIVAAY’s promos were released, its serene locations and action packed stunts served as visual treat to the audiences. At the same time, the promos did not even reveal an ounce of a detail about the film’s tightly guarded plot. While the film does have stunning visuals and mind boggling action, the screenplay (Sandeep Shrivastava), despite a handful of flaws, manages to keep the viewer hooked.

After having made his directorial debut with U ME AUR HUM, Ajay Devgn dons the directorial hat for the second time with SHIVAAY. While the film’s first half is slow as it sets up the story, the second half becomes racy, engaging and taut, and is loaded with brillaint action sequences. It is however the climax that seems far too stretched than required. Ajay Devgn has put his heart and soul as a director in SHIVAAY, which is pretty much evident in every frame of the film. Ajay Devgn comes out with flying colours as a director of SHIVAAY. He has successfully managed to package the product named ‘SHIVAAY’ in the right manner so as to suit the taste of the cinegoers. Even though the film’s setting, locales and actors are mostly foreign, the essence of SHIVAAY is totally Indian, which acts as a major connecting factor for the viewer. Ajay Devgn has successful incorporated the entertainment quotient in the form of action, which works as the right ingredient for the audiences. There are a handful of scenes in the film that one should not miss at any cost. That includes Ajay Devgn’s introduction scene, the avalanche incident amidst the mountaineering expedition, Gaura’s kidnapping scene and the chase that follows. Full marks for Ajay Devgn for being successful in extracting brilliant performances from the film’s cast.

As for the performances, the film rides solely on the ‘divine’ shoulders of Ajay Devgn, who excels superlatively in the titular role of Shivaay. While his last film DRISHYAM was the psychological thriller, SHIVAAY marks the return of Ajay Devgn in his action mode. Ajay Devgn excels in the role that is totally tailor made for him. The onscreen relationship that he shares with the child actress Abigail Eames is extremely natural and flawless. While Ajay Devgn carries the entire film on his own, he is very aptly supported by a stellar performer in the form of Abigail Eames, who makes an extremely impressive debut in Bollywood with SHIVAAY. After having worked in Hollywood shows like LAWLESS and HARRY & PAUL’S STORY OF THE 2S, the child actor Abigail Eames makes an endearing and a remarkable debut with SHIVAAY. Even though she is shown as a mute girl (hence, no dialogues), the way with which she expresses and emotes with her eyes is highly effective and impressive. Debutante actresses, Erika Kaar and Sayyeshaa, both do justice to their respective characters. On the other hand, Vir Das and the veteran actor Girish Karnad are effective in their cameos. The rest of the film’s actors do their bit to carry the film forward.

The film’s dialogues (Sandeep Shrivastava) are strictly average with no outstanding one liner that the audiences can cherish. The film’s second half does have a couple of corny moments, which could create unintentional laughter. Even though the music (Mithoon) of SHIVAAY is not impressive (title track notwithstanding), it’s extremely impressive background score (Mithoon) more than covers up for the music.

The film’s cinematography by Aseem Bajaj is simply outstanding. Full marks to him for making SHIVAAY look so grand and beautiful, surely making it a big screen experience. The film’s editing (Dharmendra Sharma) is decent. Full marks to the action director and his team for doing a marvellous job.

On the whole, SHIVAAY is a perfect emotional thriller that scores high on the account of its breathtaking visuals, amazing action and a high octane performance by Ajay Devgn. At the Box-Office, the extended weekend in the form of the festival holiday will prove to be bountiful for the film. Don’t miss this one.

  30. SHOCKING: Kamaal R Khan indulges in piracy; posts movie clip of Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay on Twitter

ByBollywood Hungama News NetworkOct 27, 2016 – 2:05 hrs IST

A while back, Kamaal R Khan (KRK) was embroiled in a controversy when Ajay Devgn released an audio clip where in KRK was heard stating that he had received monetary compensation from Karan Johar to pan the trailer of Shivaay. Post this, Ajay had demanded a formal investigation into the matter. For the uninitiated, Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil release on the same day as Shivaay. Well now we hear that the two, viz. Ajay Devgn and KRK are at logger heads once again.

Apparently, Kamaal R Khan who has made it a mandate to watch Bollywood films in Dubai, since they release there first, did the same for Shivaay too. However, KRK took things a bit too far by posting video clip of Shivaay on his twitter page, while simultaneously panning the film while inside the auditorium screening Shivaay.

Detailing what exactly happened and talking about the repercussions that KRK will likely face, Shibasish Sarkar, Chief Operating Officer at Reliance Big Entertainment says, “Basically like any Bollywood film releasing in Dubai, Shivaay too has opened there one day before India, and this gentleman has gone into the screening hall and started shooting clips of the film with his camera and uploading them on twitter. This act is a gross violation of the piracy laws, and we have taken this issue up with Twitter India and Facebook as well.” Further talking about the legal ramification of KRK’s actions, Sarkar adds, “We are planning to file a criminal complaint with the Cyber Crime cell in Mumbai and we will ensure that if any kind of piracy happens, we will go to full extent of the law to prosecute the perpetrators.”

While matters back here in India are heating up with Reliance Entertainment, who are distributing Shivaay setting their legal cogs in motion, KRK on the other hand, has promptly deleted the said tweets and video posts in question from his twitter page.

And her recent photoshoot with Ranbir is ‘hotter’ than anything she does in the movie. ‘Hot and daring’ for KJO world is that extra-marital affair between Rani and SRK in KANK!

A friend of mine watched last night. If you are going for Ash as seductive temptress, you will be disappointed, from what he told me. It is a typical, traditional, tame K. Johar love story with a minor couple of twists.

  32. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Opens Well – Shivaay Lower
    Friday 28 October 2016 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has opened well at the box office despite the clash with Shivaay. The initial is around 35-40% on average which is actually good if you consider its pre Diwali. The film is being led by the high end multiplexes and some of these even managed to take a 50% start. If it was a normal day it would be putting up a strong first number as city youth has come initially but with pre Diwali its hard to tell how much of the evening audience will come out. The anti Pakistan wave across the country does not seem to have affected the film. There was a similar type of issue when the Shahrukh Khan starrer Dilwale released and markets like North, Central and Gujarat under performed very badly. Here North and Gujarat seem fine while Central was anyway not expected to be good for this type of film. Though the weekend and Monday collections will tell more.

Shivaay has taken a lower opening at around 25% as its business at multiplexes in most parts of the country is lower than Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The film despite being an action film is hit much more than Ae Dil Hai Mushkil by pre Diwali as the mass markets remain very low till Monday. The Muslim mass centres in places like UP and Gujarat could have opened better as they are less into Diwali festivities but the film has a name like Shivaay which probably takes some of the audience away in these centres. The film will find it tough going until the audience comes back at these mass centres on Monday and then teh film will need the reports to be good enough to get the full benefit of the big holiday period.

  33. Syed Firdaus Ashraf is startled by the prices for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and and Shivaay tickets.

Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is creating mushkil for cinegoers.

Ticket prices for the film are as high as Rs 2,200 at some theatres.

A single ticket for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil at the PVR: Director’s Cut in Ambience mall, New Delhi, will cost you Rs 2,200 (for the 11.20 am show) in the platinum superior section.

For the same show, you will pay Rs 2,000 for a platinum seat.

This means if a family of four goes to watch the movie, they will pay Rs 10,000 including the cost of popcorn, samosas, nachos and soft drinks.

At the PVR Ambience Gold in Gurgaon, a single ticket in the platinum superior category (12.30 pm show) costs Rs 1,600 and Rs 1,400 for a seat in the platinum category.

Down South, tickets prices are equally high.

At the PVR Gold theatre in the Forum mall, Bengaluru, a single ticket for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2.40 pm show) costs Rs 1,100 in the platinum superior category and Rs 950 in the platinum category.

In Mumbai, at the Big Cinemas: Metro Ebony Lounge, a ticket costs Rs 950 for the 3.15 pm show.

It was only last week that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s Raj Thackeray ‘permitted’ (!!!!) the movie to be released in the state at a meeting presided over by state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Thackeray objected to the film’s release because it stars Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.

The MNS green-flagged ADHM’s release after Johar promised to pay Rs 5 crore (Rs 50 million) to the Army Welfare Fund and also post a tribute in the movie’s credits dedicating the film to the 19 soldiers killed in the Uri terror attack.

Single screen theatre owners in Mumbai are divided over the film’s release. The single screen theatre owners association had decided not to screen the film over the Fawad Khan controversy.

Some owners have apparently now decided to screen ADHM along with Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay which also releases on October 28.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil tickets are relatively cheap in Kolkata.

A single ticket for the film at INOX: South City, Kolkata, costs Rs 650 for the 2 pm show.

This means a family of four will end up paying at least Rs 4,000 for the entertainment if snacks and soft drinks are included.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is not alone in selling high price tickets. Ditto with Shivaay.

At PVR: Director’s Cut in Ambience mall, Delhi, one seat in the platinum superior category if you want to watch the Devgn drama costs Rs 2,200 (1.05 pm show); Rs 2,000 for a platinum seat.

These films’ producers and distributors want to clearly cash in on the 5-day long Diwali weekend.

  38. As for the performances, the film totally belongs to Ranbir Kapoor, who is in a dire need of a hit film, especially after the back to back debacles like ROY, BOMBAY VELVET and TAMASHA. AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL sees Ranbir Kapoor excelling in the role that seems to be tailor made for him. Ranbir Kapoor, who happens to be the nucleus of the film, takes to his role like a fish to water. It just won’t be wrong to say that AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL is an out and out a Ranbir Kapoor film. Anushka Sharma, on the other hand, is decent and does her role with extreme conviction. The chemistry between Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma is superlative in the film, so much so, that people will surely leave behind the debacle of their last film BOMBAY VELVET. Overall, Anushka Sharma comes across as extremely pleasant in terms of her performance in the film. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, despite having limited screen time, manages to looks beautiful, classy and very different from all her earlier roles. Full marks to Manish Malhotra for presenting Aishwarya Rai Bachchan like never before. Aishwarya manages to charm Ranbir’s character and the audiences, exactly the way she is meant to be. Fawad Khan, whose role has been chopped mercilessly, looks good in whatever screen time he gets. The cameos by Alia Bhatt and Imran Abbas seem just passable. On the other hand, cameos by Shah Rukh Khan and Lisa Haydon are brilliant.

AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL’s music (Pritam) is already a superhit, and the songs manage to give an extraordinary feel to the story. Tracks like ‘Bulleya’ and the title track lifts up the tempo of the film to another level altogether. The film’s background score (Pritam) is equally good and helps the film immensely.

The film’s cinematography (Anil Mehta) is superlative. The way in which he has shot the foreign locales are extremely top-notch. Even though the film’s editing (Manik Dawar) is good, it definitely could have been tighter, majorly in the film’s second half. Had the length of the film been a bit shorter, it would have definitely worked in the film’s favour.

On the whole, AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL is a contemporary and a progressive take on relationships from the master story teller Karan Johar. It is a perfect Diwali entertainer which packages rich visuals, chartbuster music and an engrossing screenplay on a large canvas. At the Box-Office, the tremendous hype, combined with the festive period and an extended weekend will translate into amazing returns for the makers. In a nutshell, AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL has got ‘S-U-P-E-R-H-I-T’ written all over it.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Movie Review: Karan Johar’s Best Film Till Date
    Saibal Chatterjee

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil goes seamlessly from a boisterous first half marked by nightclub numbers and Hindi film ditties (Gaata Rahe mera dil, Tohfa tohfa laya laya, Baby doll main sone di) to a more intense second segment propped up by Aaj jaane ki zid na karo and Mujhse pehli si mohabbat mere mehboob na maang.

And of course the soundtrack has a complement of lively numbers composed by Pritam.

In one scene, after checking into a Paris hotel, Ranbir’s character alludes to a feeling of “dil ka pet bhar gaya.”

That is precisely the feeling that the audience is most likely to take away once this film has woven its magic.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is by far Karan Johar’s best film to date: mature, sure-handed and thoroughly entertaining.

It employs the devices of mainstream Bollywood, but does so with an acute awareness of exactly where to draw the line so as not to stray into overt bubblegum territory.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Movie Review
Nihit Bhave, TNN, Oct 28, 2016, 03.03PM IST
      CRITIC’S RATING: 4.0/5

REVIEW: There’s a lot of good news, and only a little bad news, so let’s start with the former. With Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Karan Johar has let go of the “candy” but retained the “floss”, resulting in a beautiful-looking film that isn’t bereft of logic.

The laughter comes from genuine chemistry between the leads. The sadness comes from real consequences of heartbreak that Johar has always shied away from, but not this time. Karan, the writer, overpowers Karan, the director here.

Anushka Sharma plays the most well-rounded character with abandon; she’s remarkable. Ranbir’s portrayal of the clumsy, turned-down one-sided lover is heartbreaking; his honesty comes through yet again. Seeing Aishwarya in the role of a confident seductress is a welcome change.

On the downside, there’s a bizarre twist in the last 15 minutes that could have been replaced with a scene or two of good conversation, but if you have an appetite for melodrama, you might just like it.

That said, you usually come away from a Karan Johar movie dreaming of singing sweet tunes in the Alps; but ADHM makes you realize just how cold it is, up there. Go watch it for a relatable portrayal of modern-day relationships.

AJAY’S NEVER-ENDING SAGA IS HIGH ON ACTION BUT LACKS SOUL

REVIEW: On heart-pounding beats of Bolo Har Har, Shivaay has a spectacular opening scene that sees Ajay descending dangerous Himalayan cliffs like a pro. The stunning cinematography captures the mountains like no Hindi film has managed so far. You feel you are in for an adrenaline pumping ride and expect a nerve-racking survival drama to unfold in the hills, on the lines of ‘Cliffhanger’ or ‘Vertical Limit’. However, the film takes a cliched spin and ends up looking like a slow-mo version of Liam Neeson’s ‘Taken’ franchise.

AJAY’S NEVER-ENDING SAGA IS HIGH ON ACTION BUT LACKS SOUL

STORY: Shivaay (Ajay Devgn), a fearless Himalayan mountaineer covered in Lord Shiva tattoos, heads to Bulgaria to fulfill his nine-year-old daughter Gaura’s (Abigail Eames) wish of seeing her mother Olga (Erika Kaar), who abandoned them years ago. But their plan goes for a toss when the little girl gets kidnapped in the foreign land. Rescuing her from the masked child-traffickers becomes his only reason for survival.

The abduction of his daughter turns our chillum-smoking cool trekker into an angry killer, who vows to bust the flesh trade racket in Bulgaria. Soon high-octane, gravity and death-defying action sequences take centre stage, which are on par with the Hollywood films. An extended car-chase sequence in particular is outstanding.

However, the film has its issues, biggest being its run-time (3 hours) and thus, poor editing. Ajay, who is perhaps in every frame of the film doesn’t know where to stop as a director. Scenes linger on forever, nullifying their own significance. His wish to incessantly harp on the ‘father-daughter drama’ makes his action thriller dreary, an odd mishmash of multiple genres that leaves you exhausted.

Boasting of great production values, we wish Ajay had invested in a better story as well. You don’t feel for the characters or their ordeal. His quick romance with Hindi-speaking Olga, which blossoms in a dim-lit falling tent is preposterous.

Sayyeshaa Saigal makes a decent Hindi debut. Girish Karnad, who plays her father, ends up being the unintentional comic relief, owing to his inappropriate, corny dialogues.

Overall, Ajay is unstoppable in Shivaay but you wish he wasn’t! Laced with visual excellence, you applaud his film’s larger than life canvas but despite the efforts, his second directorial venture fails to engage you emotionally.

    • 100-150 can’t be benchmark for big Diwali releases. 100 was big when ghajini broke it. Today’s time 100-150 has to be consider above average for Diwali releases.

Both movies need to atleast do 175-200 in Indian Box office. Even BM last year reached that 160-175, subject to correction.

Ranbir on his intimate scenes with Aishwarya: Maine mauke pe chauka maar diya

Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have set the temperature soaring with their steamy romance in their upcoming film ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. The Karan Johar-directed movie is all to release this weekend and promotions are on in full swing. During an interview with a radio channel when Ranbir was asked about his first encounter with the former Miss World, he said that he has known Ash ever since he worked as an assistant director in the Aishwarya-Akshaye Khanna starrer ‘Aa Ab Laut Chalen’ in 1999. He joked how he was enamoured with Ash even at that age and had his first heartbreak because of her.

Next, he was asked if he found it difficult to shoot the intimate scenes with Ash in ADHM. Ranbir revealed that he did feel shy, so much so that his hands used to shiver and he was hesitant to even touch her cheeks. Ash asked him to do it properly, reminding him that they were acting at the end of the day. Ranbir added, “Tabhi maine socha, kabhi aisa mauka milega nahi, so maine bhi mauke pe chauka maar diya!”

  45. The opening of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is good enough to keep Ranbir Kapoor above the competition among the youg stars. The actor was running a one horse race when Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Besharam were taking huge initials. The opening that Besharam took in East Punjab and Delhi especially that later had taken him to striking distance of Salman Khan in those two markets even though Besharam actually crashed out. But then it went downhill from from an enviable position with Bombay Velvet. In this time Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh made good strides but the opening of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil pretty much makes it clear that Ranbir Kapoor is the best bet among the young guns.

The initial that Ae Dl Hai Mushkil has taken is at a 15 crore nett plus level taking it fair value. Obviously its pre Diwali and there is competition so it may not finally hit that figure but if this was a normal Friday then the film would have easily gone through that 15 crore nett mark. Now the day could fall short by 5-10% or even 20-25% but as far as the initial goes its the third best of 2016 after Sultan and Dhoni. This may not be reflected in the opening day figure but that is more to with external factors. The damage of Bombay Velvet is probably still there but slowly the star seems to be coming out of that fiasco. Its not the craze at the time of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Besharam but comparing it the initial of a Tamasha this is much much better. The hit music of the film will also have aided the film but every star today needs a bit of padding and only hit music can’t give a start of this level.

      1. Salman Khan
      2. Aamir Khan
      3. Ranbir Kapoor
      4. SRK
      5. Akshay Kumar

This is correct and i am making Ranbir Kapoor jump from No 6 to No 3 post ADHM. He will only climb from here and finally become No 1 in few years.

  46. The opening response of the Diwali clashes has gone in the favour of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Below are the first show figures from some centres. Mumbai and Delhi are metros, Chandigarh is a mini metro while Nagpur is an A centre so the numbers are from main centres. If we go down in to smaller centres that have just a one or two theatre release like a Jhansi, Kamptee, Ganganagar, Dausa etc then Shivaay does lead but this like by 20 or 30 admits and the shortfall coming from the main centres across India is too big for it to make any worthwhile dent. Below are the admit figures of first shows with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city..

  47. Looking at the reviews and wom, this seems like a fri-mon 4-day deal and Monday may be best day for both movies. After that it’s an uphill task and movie will come down massively as the novelty factor is missing here and Kjo has been unable to do something out of the box except assisting Ranbir to continue be viable in mainstream. If Ranbir is unable to capitalise on this genre and do something massive, then he is basically done for the day in the bigger scheme of things and will keep hanging around like others in his age group.

Ajay is not at fault in anyway and he never asked for this clash and was anyway coming on Diwali but it’s KJO team which played dirty through their agents and messed up the whole scenario and made it into ‘them vs us’ kind of deal for no rhyme or reasons and Ajay had to atleast put up a brave front. Any dignified person will do that to maintain his self respect. Like Akshay he is hardly known for controversies and maintains low profile.

Coming to opening, Ajay hardly had any known faces to compete against multi starrer ADHM with Anushka coming after a grand success in Sultan. He had to rely on content but being the director, actor , producer etc that has suffered and very few in bollywood can multitask to success. At the least, he should have had a known face for a heroine because at the end of the day we Indians take excessive pride in or admiration of one’s own appearance and vanity.

Two films releasing during Diwali is nothing new. Why would Ajay take his Diwali date for granted, and expect that no one else should come in the way? Why should he grudge another producer for cashing in on holiday time? I find this hugely egoistical on Ajay’s part that he thinks once he announces a date, no one else should come in. As soon as Devgan learnt that Karan was also releasing his film, he was agitated, and it was he who made it a us versus them battle. Kajol joined him too. I suspect all this stems from insecurity. Both seem to have an exaggerated sense of their stardom and reach, or they wouldn’t take on Kjo or Yash Raj in the first place.

      • Sandyi that is incorrect. KJO announced ADHM for Diwali a year back and I doubt Ajay is so naive to think he will get a solo release. I think it was all taken into consideration that two medium scale movies will release together.

The trouble started when one fine day KRK and his surrogates suddenly took off bad mouthing Shivaay and Ajay out of the blue.
It’s not clear if KJO offered money but fact is KRK had a sudden change of heart. Not long ago he was heavily instrumental in social media ridicule of BV, KJO/Ranbir etc and the brand had taken a big hit and then the numbers came in…….and it became a national disaster !!

Here it seems KJO got proactive and did not want to take any chance for Ranbir and went out of his way to either mend fences or simply apply ‘beg , borrow or steal’ fundamentals. All this crap originated from there and then the Pak story came in later and became another news of gigantic proportions which Ajay in all fairness may have tried to use to his advantage.

        • What I heard was, and the impression I gather is that Ajay Devgan did not want another release at the same time, and was deeply upset. I just don’t see this as a clash, because Devgan is not in the same league of Kjo as filmmaker. Karan Johar was clearly not worried about Shivaay.

Ajay thought its easy to take on Shuddhi and announced his date and changed the date from Jan 2017 to Diwali 2016. He was always against Karan’s movie. Now, when Karan announced in Jun 2015 about ADHM releasing on Diwali(17 months before release date), Ajay is crying and saying he said there was no other movie coming up and it was empty slot. That is such a bull and open lies on TV. Karan has maintained a silence all through from KRK issue and to dates. He never commented anything anywhere.

        • Also, Devgn is playing silly trick. During JTHJ, it was announced in June 2011 that Yash Chopra’s next will be releasing in Diwali 2012(again 1.5 years before) and Devgn only realizing the movie is not hot in the trade capitalized and announced Son of Sardaar in June 2012 for Diwali, which is after 1 year of JTHT announcement. Then, what is this ethic talk now about announcing 2nd? Bull!

The fight between Kamal R Khan, Ajay Devgn and Karan Johar got really ugly when KRK started bad mouthing his latest release Shivaay which, by then, hadn’t even released. Reportedly, in a conversation with Devgn’s business partner Kumar Mangat, KRK said he recieved Rs 25 lakh from the filmmakers of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil to say positive things about the film.
Yesterday, KRK released the first scene of Shivaay and, in a series of tweets, said terrible things about the movie. “Let me clear, #Shivaay is story of prostitution problem in Bulgaria, so what Indian audience has to do with it? Why will Indians watch it?” he wrote in a tweet. “Story started by 9 years old memory and Since last 15 minutes Ajay Devgan Sahab is jumping in the mountains! #Shivaay,” he wrote in another.
However, he eventually deleted the tweet which had shown the first scene after Vox Cinemas, where he was watching the film, asked him to take it down. “@kamaalrkhan Hey KRK. We’re sure you’re excited to watch #Shivaay, however using recording devices inside the cinema is strictly not allowed,” they wrote from their official handle. “For your information, I haven’t recorded anything at all. I took a pic of Title #Shivaay only. @voxcinemas,” he responded.

honestly I have never really minded any of Karan’s films. His weakest film in my opinion is K3G but that was also a good one time watch. His best films remain MNIK and KKHH. KANK was also good. Haven’t seen SOTY. I think people are unnecessarily harsh on him. He has never made a truly great film but does make fine films in the genre he is known for.

Karan is passable but like all the other bollywood directors could not age well & now can be labeled a successful 90’s director similar to what David Dhawan was in late 90s within his own genre. It’s similar to Subhash Ghai who suddenly lost touch in 90s. This is a bit surprising since KJO has tried to remain relevant with the times and is dabbling in each and every media related occurrence in the last few years and keeping up with the new actors too.

Among his movie, due to family bondings connected with K3G the most esp when it released. KKHH has not aged well but 2nd half there worked for me when it came. MNIK was all over the place in terms of direction , though contrary to expectations SRK did a fine job. KANK, the cast was all wrong and race to wear better designer clothes among the cast was overtly visible. Never watched SOTY though have seen it in parts on TV with Rishi Kapoor gay act which was done very childishly.

“Sharam naam ki cheez hee nahi hai”: Did Jaya Bachchan take a dig at Aishwarya?

Just as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is all set to take us for a joyride with her film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which is releasing this weekend, we heard some shocking statements coming from her mother-in-law Jaya Bachchan, which perhaps hinted at Aishwarya’s intimate scenes in the much awaited movie.

At the MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival, Jaya Bachchan mentioned that there was a time when Indian filmmakers used to create art, but now films are more about numbers and business.

“Filmmakers at that time, created art. Today, it’s a business and all about numbers. Everything is thrown at our face. People have forgotten subtlety. Open display of affection is considered smart… sharam naam ki toh cheese hee nahi hai (people are no longer ashamed). Now, it’s about big collections at the box office, Rs 100 crore films, first weekend collection…It’s all Greek to me,” said the 68-year-old actress, known for films like Guddi, Abhimaan and Silsila.
Well, what do you think of that? Recently, when Amitabh Bachchan was asked for his thoughts on the trailer, he replied saying he had not watched it!

Do you think the Bachchans are cross with their bahu for ADHM?

Jaya Bachchan sounds like a complete psycho to me. She is clearly very possessive about Abhishek and feels as though Aishwarya has made a mockery out of their relationship by doing a movie like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Does she not remember Amitabh Bachchan’s affairs and she decided to stay with him despite all that(I know she is not at fault but she chose to ignore his many affairs). She also chose to ignore movies of his like Cheeni Kum (There was so much nasty sex talk in this movie), KANK (He was a perverted Uncle) and Nishabd? Does she not see her granddaughter who dresses way too provocatively for her age ?! The kind of attention she is bringing to herself at this age is disgusting. She only sees what her Bahu is doing? No matter how much money or education these type of people get, they will ALWAYS be backwards in their thoughts. Aishwarya’s open display of “affection” is nothing to be ashamed of, everyone does this…there is no nudity or even an actual kissing scene. There are so many double-standards in the Bachchan family, it is ridiculous. We all know this was targeted at Aishwarya. They have not shown any support for this movie and neither were they present at the screening. It is weird that Aishwarya was not there either 😐 There is definitely something weird happening. It is so sad that even in rich families like this, a 43 year old woman still has the same struggles that you would see in a middle-class or poor families.

Jaya then gave a statement about sharam etc. It was clear in the open that Amitabh’s family is not happy with Ash accepting this role in ADHM but I don’t see any reason why should they be unhappy? Does Jaya own Ash? Is she her slave? All that talk by Big B during Pink is fake if you can’t respect ‘Miss World’ in your own house. She’s independent and free women and can do whatever she wants to do. Its not like she’s doing a porn movie where their ‘family ki izzat mit jayegi’. Pathetic behavior by Bachchans here!

“.Before you even think of watching Ae Dil Hai Mushkil this Diwali, you must know one ominous truth. Karan Johar is in the “mature phase” of his career.

“….The next few minutes are spent on establishing the sexual nature of their relationship again and again and again and again, in case we missed the fact that Johar is telling us that two consenting adults can have sex. All this would have been very liberating had he not chosen to make Sabah actually fall in love with Mr Sangria. But what to do, after all, aurat ka dil!
Ranbir Kapoor, who has played the same tortured character in the last five films, is like a Delhi aunty peddling her last year’s lehanga as a new one. It probably has a new zardozi patch or two, but nobody is buying it or even giving it a second glance. The normally-dependable Anushka Sharma is the single most annoying thing in ADHM, and in a film starring Aishwarya Rai, that’s saying a lot.
Come to think of it, MNS needn’t have bothered banning this one. Karan Johar may well have dug his box office grave himself.”

Of course, this is 2016 and marriage isn’t the ultimate goal of love. Also, because this is a modern-day story set in London and Paris, the eternal lovers will find several other lovers before they get back. Except, instead of touching your heart with such pure humane emotions —irrational yet real, the film appears rather superficial. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil And Shivaay First Day Estimates
    Saturday 29 October 2016 00.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network
Google+ Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Pinterest Addthis

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has managed have a good first day at the box office with collections set to come in at around 13.25 crore nett as per early estimates. These collections are very good for pre Diwali and the film did open at a faster rate but the evenings did not show the regular improvement due to Diwali festivities. This trend could linger on for the next two days and collections are unlikely to show normal weekend trends. On a normal day the morning start would have translated into a 16 crore nett first day. The film has done very well at multiplexes across the country beating the figures of the Akshay Kumar starrers Housefull 3 and Rustom at most multiplexes in the big cities despite it being pre Diwali. The business in the B and C centres is less be it multiplexes or single screens but that is not really the target audience and if this audience comes from Monday onward the film will put up a huge number.

Shivaay is on the lower side with around 8.25 crore nett as per early estimates though taking pre Diwali into account its an average start. This film has been affected more by Diwali festivities as business in mass markets like UP, Gujarat, Rajasthan, CP Berar and CI is weak and these markets are where the best business of Shivaay will come. These markets are likely to get weaker over the next two days and then jump hugely on Monday. The film had a low start at multiplexes in big centres and remained at the same level through the day. The clash has dented its business in the big city multiplexes.

It is coincidence but the business is very similar to the Mohenjo Daro and Rustom clash with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil doing similar to Rustom on day one and Shivay similar to Mohenjo Daro. But as the business has come pre Diwali and bigger holidays to come both of the Diwali releases are in a better position as compared to their counterparts.

  61. Back (to blog) from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil! Simply put, this is Karan’s most mature work and the one with the least mistakes or issues. The movie has its idea very clearly spelled out and the story sticks to it without floundering much and the way Karan introduces and tackles the complexities around the same path is remarkable. The movie is super fast paced for the first hour and then slowly goes down and by the end it is low. But kudos to Karan for showing maturity and moving away from the regular melodrama and even the climax is pretty neatly done without overdoing it. The biggest plus point of this movie is Karan tackling the dramatic stuff with such ease and adding dollops of humor and taking care of the audience (learnt from KANK, I guess). Last 30 mins is not the best part of the movie but it has its heart in right place so is passable.

Among Performances, Ranbir is remarkable and back to his form. Can’t believe he’s been avoiding his bread & butter role (from YJHD) and the day he came back to it, he has won all his fans back. This is good return to form and stardom. Anushka IMO is scene stealer in majority of the movie(but finally Ranbir owns the movies) and has given an excellent performance. Aishwarya Rai
has done well for the role. The age seems appropriate for the mature ‘Urdu poet’ and she’s done well and not to mention she looked great and in a glamorous role which audience seems to be waiting from ages. Fawad Khan in a small role is very good and he adds to the story well. SRK’s cameo is very well done and the whole point of the movie which Ranbir is doing has been done in SRK’s character in those few minutes. So, very well written cameo. Finally, Pritam’s music is simply brilliant and good that Karan has kept just 1 voice of Arijit Singh singing for Ranbir for all songs even though it has different singers in the audio of the movie.

Overall this movie is a triumph to Karan Johar and his most critically acclaimed and maturely done movie. It has all the trappings of Karan Johar movies minus the over dramatic scenes and adding sharp editing and smart dialogues.

    RECOMMENDED!!

    • To mention that ‘Pakistan’ has not been mentioned anywhere and even the Pakistan shown in the movie becomes ‘Lucknow, India’. Unlucky for Karan Johar for the timing of the movie. Also, out of the 5 characters – except Ranbir as Ayan, rest of all the characters are muslim and originally of Pakistani characters and he ended up changing all of them in the movie to Indian muslims. Fawad’s role seems to be chopped and is pretty much short in the movie. All this changes didn’t mess up the movie. So, good job on this part by Karan and his team.

HKK at least broke 1st movie records during its time and was looking far bigger and better movie and hence broke the record. Shivaay is nowhere close to that hype and project. Just showing mountains or chases doesn’t make it bigger project.

  63. ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ singer Arijit Singh has lashed out at music composer Abhijit Vaghai for auto-tuning his voice so much that he couldn’t recognise it himself. The singer took to his social networking handle to lash out at the composer for his ‘insulting’ take on the classic song ‘Pal pal dil ke paas’. Arijit had lent his voice to a new rendition of the song which is a part of Rajneesh Duggal-Sana Khan- Sharman Joshi starrer ‘Wajah Tum Ho’.

In his post, that he later deleted, Arijit wrote, “I do not understand why people act smart for no reason. Abhijit Vaghani you did not have to tune my voice to this extent. I am so ashamed of this rendition and I so love the original. Good luck with your music bro but honestly your sense of tuning and ruining the classic tune is a classic one. Keep up the good work.”

The upset singer even went to the extent of saying that had he known the song would turn out the way it did, he would never have sung it in the first place. He also assured the composer that he was done with him and called the piece a ‘classic insult’ to the original song.

“You are a talented music producer but I am so done with you. Thank you really for cheating me. If I knew you will change the mix later I wouldn’t have sung this. A classic insult to the original song,” wrote Arijit.

Journo: What do you think about the Diwali clash?
Kajol: Shivaay will speak for itself and it will be better than the trailer. We have a nice product with us and I know better film will survive and we’re confident.
Journo: Have you seen the movie?
Kajol: No, I haven’t seen anything except the trailer but I know how much hard Ajay has worked.

    ***************************************************************************

Lol, so just coz Ajay was away from her for a year and worked hard.. the movie will automatically be better than Karan’s movie and blind confidence.

    • This couple has been acting in this juvenile manner for a long time. Wasn’t it Ajay who said he was not happy with We Are Family trailer because he felt Kajol should be given higher billing than Kareena due to her seniority?

Why do these two keep picking up fights and trying to prop up each other up? Is this what they think is love? People who always have a “us versus others” attitude end up with no others, because eventually they are left with no friends. That has already happened with Kajol.

      • You know the best part about Ajay’s reason to release Shivaay on Diwali in his own words.. “its perfect Diwali/festival movie”.

Yeah Right??? Who in right mind will be interested to watch glamorous ‘mardaani’ with full on child/sex trafficking ring, prostitution rackets, etc during Diwali?

Shivaay managed to cast a female actor who speaks with an accent and her name is not Katrina Kaif. Wow!! She is not even Nargis Fakhri. Or Lisa Haydon. She is Erika Kaar, a Polish actress (playing a Bulgarian girl) who can speak better Hindi than all of the three above. And you will be pleased to know Bulgarians also have ‘boodhi maa’ ‘jawan behen ki shaadi’ problems. Ha! In exact same words. Ha! Ha!

After wrapping up The Ring, Shah Rukh Khan is back in Mumbai to start the promotional tour for his next film Dear Zindagi. But, before that, Shah Rukh Khan surprised some special ladies on Wednesday.

Shah Rukh Khan surprised a few ladies who are acid attack survivors. The Makelove Notscars foundation along with SRK surprised the ladies who are die-hard fans of SRK. The ladies were speechless when SRK walked in the room. He shared a photo and thanked them for meeting him. He captioned it, “With my beautiful friends Reshma, Mamta, Sapna & Basanti. Thanks for coming over @makeluvnotscars.” He also promised to visit them again and spend more time with them.

The foundation’s Facebook page recapped how Shah Rukh Khan came on board with the plan to surprise the ladies and thanked him with a special post. “Yesterday after a long day of filming we told the girls we had a surprise planned for them. Although they were exhausted, we told them we would be taking them on a “studio tour” and none of them looked impressed. We took them to a famous Studio and told them this was the studio where the “amul” butter ad was shot as well as the mother dairy one. They were ready to walk out of the studio and looked seemingly upset while Shah Rukh Khan was doing a live Facebook chat in the other room. To distract them, we opened the live chat and the girls were mesmerised by the charisma of King Khan. As soon as the chat was over, in walks the King himself and it’s safe to say that the girls absolutely couldn’t believe their eyes and have not been able to sleep since! Shah Rukh was so amazing with the girls, he spoke to them for a good 20 mins even though he had places to be! What a humble and down to earth superstar, may we all be like him! A big shout out to him and his team for the priceless reactions bellow. Love and light, the survivors and the team at Make Love Not Scars ❤”

On the work front, Shah Rukh Khan will be next seen in Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi which is scheduled to release on November 25, 2016.

Also it’s did well in single screens and 30%-50% more than ADHM which is a big win for Devgn as it means his core fan base still picked him over ADHM.
It’s multiplex where is not doing as well as audience went for ADHM.
Even today Shivaay is doing very good in single screens. I am not yet throwing the towel down for Shivaay.

  71. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has taken an excellent opening in Overseas with strong numbers in all markets. The opening day collections in US / Canada are actually the best of the year as Sultan had a Wednesday release and grossed $500,000 while it is $600,000 apprx for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The Friday figure was $660,000 for Sultan which is higher than Ae Di Hai Mushkil. The film is also excellent in United Kingdom with nearly £200,000. This is a dead market today but these numbers are huge as Karan Johar is a major name for Hindi films in United Kingdom due to films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and My Name Is Khan. All these films smashed box office records in United Kingdom Below are the figures of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil from main Overseas markets.

    United Kingdom

    £185,000

    US / Canada

    $600,000

    Gulf

    $550,000

    Australia

    A$ 150,000

It remains to be seen at what number the weekend number comes out to but its looking big and with the opening day figures in the main markets easily surpassing all records of Ranbir Kapoor films it will be a record for him. It could even beat the numbers of My Name Is Khan despite not being released in Pakistan which would take out around 10% of the Overseas revenue.

  72. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has finished around 4 crore nett ahead of Shivaay on day one though Shivaay has probably been affected more by pre Diwali as its a mass film. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has put up very strong numbers in South India as there the collections are not affected much by pre Diwali festivities. The figures in Nizam / Andhra and Mysore are huge for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with the former close to 1 crore nett and the later around 1.25 crore nett.

The main gap between the films is coming in Mysore and West Bengal as Mysore has collected four times more for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and and West Bengal is more than double. These circuits don’t perform well for mass films unless its a Khan and for a mass film the shortfalls of these areas have to made up in mass circuits but with pre Diwali that becomes a huge task. Shivaay with 10.2 cr opening is probably not going to touch 100 cr unless there’s a Monday miracle. Both films might end up under performing.

    • Sandyi you were not here, sometime back I had talked about a good number of players in bollywood ‘lagaoing shendi’ to the big corporates who had entered the market. All these Kashyaps and Phantoms of the world made hay with massive budgets and a way of siphoning money by announcing big budgeted movies. It seems with Shivaay Ajay too has made use of this opportunity otherwise there was no need to play actor , director, producer and with no proper actress. Ajay has clashed before too and will clash again next year with Golmaal 4 and it was matter of fact. Its only some fingering done behind the scene by KJO team has made matters worse. One visible example is krk and his surrogates doing the dirty work for him.

Now going forward with exit of corporates, industry will face an uphill task for making movies by the dozen the way they are being made and conventional production houses will regain supremacy. All these Ranbir type of actors who have no success record will now have to justify what they charge and better movies will be made and some of hype will die down.

We as audience and consumers will be the ultimate beneficiaries.

  80. So for all the sensible & realistic talks on TV shows, interviews KJO remains time warped in fantasy land of 90s. I really want to know which NRI he meets on his various trips abroad. I mean he has confessed to his private Lower Manhattan sojourns most likely to the Greenwich Village referred as ‘The Village’ cradle to LGBT movement. But what after that ? I mean even Ambani’s kids will think twice before leading the life he shows in his movies. Everyone is not a Lakshmi Mittal overseas ! and even if they have all the money in the world would they care a fuck for things like real love and all these middle class emotions !

    Sample this review –

    http://www.mid-day.com/articles/ae-dil-hai-mushkil-movie-review-adhm-ranbir-kapoor-anushka-sharma-aishwarya-rai-karan-johar/17720176

“….Being the cool hunter, Johar dives into the party scene of the pretty, urbane young as his characters club hop in London, Paris, Vienna — yeah baby, EDM and water is the new tequila shot, although I haven’t been to noiseless headphone parties yet.
This movie is full of them. The lead characters live off their parental income, doing random courses abroad before they join their father’s business eventually. Their life’s concerns make #FirstWorldProblems look like chicken shit. The second lead, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (gorgeous as hell), is a shayra, or poetess. So there is much poetry as well. Everything being in line with what Yash Chopra would describe as light-hearted ‘glamorous realism’.

“….Oh, which reminds me, Anushka plays a Pakistani girl (spinelessly made to look like she’s from Lucknow in the film). Ranbir is a British passport holding Indian boy. Even if their governments can’t stand each other, what do they incessantly bond over? Bollywood. Both are desi movie freakoids (this part has been stretched to death as well). It’s the common popular culture that keeps the love between borders alive. But, obviously haters of the wrong things, who were opposing this film, will never understand this”.

On Monday when Diwali is over only then we will know which movie is liked more based on the pick up. Shivaay doing 9 cr for an action movie whose man audience is north india in pre Diwali is not so bad. It’s target audience will be single screens. But it will need multiplex support to be a hit considering their budget. And ADHM has of course done very well and it looks like Kjo has done am imtiaz here. And anything Imtiaz can never be bad.

Shivaay had great action for a Bollywood movie.

And they both make just about the same as a film riding on a cricketing icon’s name?

That raises more than a few questions about our perceptions of stardom and its associated hyperbole…

        • Saket. You are thinking right but pre-diwali is always the weak time to release movies. Time and again it has been mentioned, you are comparing that to a regular friday. Everyone know in reality the 1st day will be after Diwali day(which is monday here).

Even Krrish 3 had same dilemma and Diwali was on Sunday. Rakesh Roshan wanted to release the movie on Monday and then for some reason based on astrology ended up releasing on Friday and it had low weekend.

Even JTHJ and SOS on 2012 had same dilemma. Diwali was on Monday and then both JTHJ and SOS avoided the Friday and released their movies on Tuesday(day after Diwali). They even avoided the Diwali day of Monday.

So, folks try to avoid these 3 days as much possible. Even here both directors mentioned that movie will really start from Monday.

See Ajay’s interview, he calls Monday as 1st day too.

          ***************
When asked about the clash to which Ajay replied that the audience would know which a better film is and “that will take away all the benefits.”

“The audience gets divided. Eventually, what will happen is, we are not talking about the first day. It is a pre-Diwali day and we don’t expect a very big number because people are busy,” Ajay said.

“By the time you come to Monday, which is like the first day, audience will know which is a better film and that will take away all the benefits,” he opined.

          http://www.dnaindia.com/entertainment/report-shivaay-vs-ae-dil-hai-mushkil-this-is-what-ajay-devgn-has-to-say-on-the-clash-2264295

In fact, its opening isn’t too far off from the opening of films like PK & Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Had it released during a proper festive period, it’d have made the same amount of money as these films.

So this whole Pre-Diwali shutdown argument really doesn’t fly. We are still talking about a film riding on a cricketing legend’s name, with no A list stars, no hit music, beating all films in terms of opening except one. In the case of ADHM & Shivaay, it has beaten two biggies put together!

Really gives some perspective on what purported stardom really is these days…

        • @Krish”Wait till Monday and then you will see a pick up and then you will also see effect of pre Diwali.

Krish all trade experts are publicly saying opening is crap to Diwali standards. Even Sultan pre-eid and with Ramzan thrown in clocked 37Cr on day 1. People who are hyped don’t wait for Diwali & Eid to happen, they just head to ticket counters esp the younger crowd if its a romcom. Movies need to live up to the hype and both ADHM and Shivaay also had the advantage of combining two different genre hence additional audience from different strata should have given much bigger numbers so opening is definitely dull. MS Dhoni is in a own zone unseen until now and even a Salman can’t surpass that super stardom and name.

Regards to Monday of course it will be the biggest day being a full holiday after pre Diwali. But think about the drops on Tuesday and Wed how will all this fold up with this kind of opening. Both may find difficult to touch 100cr each in my opinion going by actual wom.

Re Aamir praise , he has his own issues coming up with Dangal and these days its all about gathering your surrogates to do the talking and scratching each other’s back. Aamir is the type who found Black narrative disturbing with many plot holes to DDLJ, so him liking this genuinely is not even a question esp if one goes by reviewers/ actual wom who say kjo is all over the place in 2nd half and many chuckling at cancer angle at the end. And on his Ranbir praise, has anyone heard a hindi saying ‘chane ka zhaad par chadhana….’ He is actually pumping Ranbir for all the wrong reasons to go offbeat and never settle down because fact is even with acting talent (which is restricted to urban roles) Ranbir sense of script is hugely lacking and we have not seen any of his cinematic brilliance on screen except may be partially Barfi which was aided by great music and worked with the flow of the narrative.

Regards to KJO even roadside audience is no more in 90s zone and this is 2016 and he been questioned on logic of nri crying for love. Just check the link and the dude at 3 min mark –

It’s difficult to take celebrity tweets at face value these days. We live in a world of political correctness and that attitude defines the general reactions/opinions that are then exaggerated (by the media) beyond belief.

This is not a slight against you…it’s just something I had in mind from a long time, and looking at Aamir’s tweet, I had to get it out.

If he feels Karan Johar is the lowest of the low directors in Bollywood, there’s no reason to discuss further. The discussion ends. Different strokes for different folks. (Even though I don’t consider ‘great’ director but I can easily find his movies passable.)

          Like

        • Aamir might like Ranbir but to call him the best actor is a bit too much. That’s probably a good clue about the nature of these tweets.

Regarding KJo, well, it’s not just different strokes. Within Bollywood, there are directors like Hirani, Kashyap, Imtiaz Ali, Rakeysh Mehra, Dibakar Banerjee, Vikramaditya Motwane and Sriram Raghavan, just to name a few, who are well known for their craft. Compared to these guys, KJo is not even a rank amateur, forget good.

And contrary to popular opinion, it’s not the nature of first world characters found in KJo’s cinema that I have a problem with — it’s his poor understanding of cinema, in general. His characters are mostly cardboard cutouts, spout the most cliched lines and reside in a space that can only be regarded as bubble gum reality. His garish choice of colors amps up the ante even further. I could go on but that would be futile.

The bottomline is that KJo’s sense of cinema, his worldview combined with his writing is a massive turnoff for me. I have much higher regard for Sanjay Leela Bhansali compared to Johar and I struggle with his films (his aesthetic choices, in particular) for the most part. KJo’s films are a giant waste of time and space in comparison. This doesn’t mean that ADHM is a bad film but based on past evidence, I find it really hard to believe that something good can come out of KJo’s stable.

I could be wrong but I wouldn’t bet on it.

        • Aamir is not beyond favouritism and opportunism, but I don’t believe he can fake praise. He is seldom so effusive about a film that he doesn’t think is very good. He liked Zoya’s last film a lot, and went all out to promote it – he even did a cameo.

It’s true Aamir did not praise Kjo earlier. That has two reasons. One, Karan’s strong allegiance to SRK obviously made the filmmaker less appealing to the other two Khans. Also, even though Kjo made some commercially successful films, they weren’t great enough to evoke any spontaneous, objective praise from Aamir. He didn’t want to promote his enemy’s team.

But now with Aamir and Karan being friends, I think Aamir is more open to liking his films. Like they say, when there is a disposition to like, a pretext will soon be found. This doesn’t mean Aamir’s praise is a manufactured one. If he didn’t like it, i am sure he would have kept mum. His praise is a combination of both his new friendship with Karan and the fact that he is viewing Kjo’s cinema with a more open mind now.

  86. Will say this about KJo. He was the best thing about Bombay Velvet…even though the film was a misfire. He was an inspired choice as a South-Bombay snob who also happens to be gay. On second thoughts, it wasn’t probably that inspired a choice.

Jokes apart, his villainous turn definitely rocked. As the smooth-talking and conniving Kaizad Khambatta, he was more than impressive. The same can’t be said about the film, unfortunately.

Having said that, KJo as a director, is a different beast. There must be a handful of Bollywood filmmakers whom I dislike more than him. I’ve hated all of his films to date, and failed to even finish watching most of this films. Yes, they are that bad. I highly doubt he has turned a new corner with ADHM and has somehow created a good film, even by chance.

As a filmmaker, I’d describe him as a proper philistine. I find it tough to negotiate Bhansali’s excesses…KJo’s level of kitsch and melodrama is the lowest of the lows, as far as I’m concerned.

  90. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: Karan Johar is a rare commodity in Bollywood. He needs to be treasured

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil shows Karan Johar is a sharp writer, and it is about bloody time that Bollywood and audiences acknowledged it.

It’s easy to diss Karan Johar. He hosts a gossip-y Bollywood chat show, judges dance reality shows, participates in comedy sketches making fun of the popular perception surrounding his sexuality. He also acknowledges all of the above in interviews, never going through one without taking a pot-shot at himself. It’s easier to diss a Karan Johar film. With his characters going bar-hopping in downtown London, flying in private-jets to Paris, the overly choreographed party song, wedding song. It’s like hating on that rich kid who is dropped to school in a BMW. He’s entitled, and unapologetic.

Karan Johar is someone who does the Bollywood routine unlike anyone else. In fact, he does it better than anyone else. Does that mean his films are hollow on the inside? Probably not, if you care to dig deeper. If you keep you ears open to that rat-a-tat-tat dialogue, where he exhausts us with Dharma and YashRaj references, but which will invite a chuckle nonetheless. Like Ranbir Kapoor said in a recent interview, there’s a lot of sadness behind Johar’s constant laughter. You need to make an allowance for the expensive wine and the private-jets. He’s obviously far from perfect, and the contrived, bizarre climax tells us that.

It would be unfair to call his films generic and fluffy. You could disagree, but then again that would be the easiest thing to do.

The Central India markets of Rajasthan, CP Berar and CI also dropped but the contribution here is minimal so does not affect collections too much. The film made gains or held at similar levels to Friday in Mumbai and South. If it was not pre Diwali the would have probably shown solid growth of around 20-25%. The two day business of the film has gone over 25 crore nett which is a good result for pre Diwali film that is clashing with another big film. The first two day business of Ae dil Hai Mushkil is as follows.

    Friday – 13,04,00,000

    Saturday – 12,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 25,54,00,000

The Sunday business could drop a little again despite it being a Sunday as its Diwali puja and a large section of the crowds will be busy with festivities. The night shows which are usually weak at multiplexes on Sunday should be strong as the audiences comes back out.

  92. Shivaay dropped around 10-12% on Saturday with business around 8-8.25 crore nett. The drop for Shivaay like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was mainly North and Central India but the problem for Shivaay was that it had a far larger contribution coming from mass centres and single screens and these tend to drop more which lead to Shivaay having a bigger drop. The film was better in Mumbai and South but in the latter the film is not collecting well and this area is best pre Diwali. The two day business of the film is around 17.25 crore nett. The first two day business of Shivaay is as follows.

    Friday – 9,15,00,000

    Saturday – 8,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 17.40,00,000

Shivay will also find it tough going on Sunday as the markets where its best collections are will again be hit due to Diwali puja and could drop further. then it will be D Day on Monday as the audiences will be back and it will have to close the the gap on Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with a big number if it is to have any chance of succeeding.

Basic street food is Michelin star restaurant. A home is a mansion. An entry scene is a helicopter entrance! It does not reflect basic NRI life. Aditya got it much more right in DDLJ with how Kajols family lived. It’s a truly fake world. On paper his stories & characters sound great. But planted in New York or San Francisco or London & the projected manner in the way they live is fake and not real in any sense.

But he does have a following! I give him that! There is a market for him, but it is diminished now. Same goes for Aditya and Barjatya! As long as they have a big star and market there films with some level of linkage to their history they will get an opening, but they’ll fail on the score of making another MPK, HAHK, KKHH, DDLJ. When the films they make today have moments aping their previous efforts they are straddling to recreate their own history & nothing more dynamic or path breaking.

        Totally disagree.
        Lets take step by step.

“A home is a mansion. An entry scene is a helicopter entrance! It does not reflect basic NRI life.”

Which movie? K3G right? That’s not NRI lifetstyle. You got completely got it wrong. That’s shown in India(but shot overseas). Amitabh’s character is Ambani of India. He is top billionaire of India and then his son falls with the girl from chandni chowk who owns local sweet shops. She is not shown with limousine and when she has to get sweets to Ambani’s house, she gets them on her feet. Karan said that rich vs poor doesn’t work unless its two different class so he made Amitabh’s character uber rich and modeled on Ambani. He might not own a mansion but he owns the most expensive house on the planet!

Just glamor never works and if you talking about the helicopter entrance it works only coz of the emotion of Jaya bachchan waiting for his son. If you remove that waiting part, the scene becomes soulless and empty.

SRK’s house in UK in 2nd half and then scenes in MNIK where Kajol works as hairdresser all are fine. There is a logic and pattern. Suddenly an hairdresser will not drive in a limousine or SRK when leaving to meet President will take a private jet. etc. Karan is not that dumb you guys are making out.

Both Karan and Bhansali are adamant to create their own lifestyle on the screen and I think Karan’s emotional connect is more than Bhansali. Bhansali has lot of overdramatic and manipulative scenes compared to Karan’s feelings shown in the characters and Karan’s characters go through lot of silent scenes compared to theatrical effect in Bhansali’s world.

So, if you get lost with the houses of the characters then you too not ready to watch a bollywood movie. The movie always works for the connect of the emotional characters. For Karan, its very easy to make them lesser rich and shoot in real houses and then make the same story/characters but then it defeats his vision.

For once, I’m very happy to see well dressed actors in a movie like ADHM and not everyone is interested to see Anurag Kashyap type of reality in every film on big screen. If he’s making them uber rich, how is that an issue of anyone? That was and never is the connect to the story. People need silly reasons to diss Karan and its very easy to diss him.

I’d say it’s easy to diss KJo for a good reason. And that reason, for me and most people I know, is K3G. That movie is a monstrosity — sorry, can’t sugercoat criticism here.

He might have made a decent film in ADHM (might check it out later), but his previous films make it super-easy to make fun of him.

And this part by Jay is absolutely spot on:

But he does have a following! I give him that! There is a market for him, but it is diminished now. Same goes for Aditya and Barjatya! All these guys are doing is repackaging their old stuff. They don’t have anything new to offer.

Moreover, disagree completely on Bhansali vs Johar. Bhansali’s cinema is grand and opulent, even excessive to the point of being off putting, but he’s just following the grand tradition of old Bollywood epics. His problem is that he operates too much in epic mode, and one can hate him for that, but one can’t call him out for not caring about his characters. His characters are carefully crafted and his cine-world is meticulously planned. Moreover, the standard of acting in his films is usually top-notch. Something that can’t be said about KJo at all.

The problem with KJo is that he pushes too many (emotional) buttons without earning the right to push them. Now that may not be a problem for people who start sniffing and using tissues at the drop of a hat, but for the other more hardened (mature?) folks, it usually just pisses them off.

Karan said that time he used to target pan-India audience and try to manipulate his movies for that. But he stopped doing that from long time. Now he just does target 1 set of audience and make the movies for them without trying to make it forced pan-India. For example, ADHM is never going to run in Bihar, it is nothing against the movie but it not targetting them. They don’t care friendship between girl and boy and even if they do, they won’t to this extent.. Similarly, MNIK will not appeal to the interiors in India for the issue which is more global and outside of India. Lots of other issues as well.

I’m crticizing Johar’s filmmaking choices, his brand of cinema, for what I believe is good reason. In fact, I can’t believe I have to reiterate his obvious failings. I thought it was clear to one and all?

Nope, nothing is so obvious and clear. Just read Rangan’s reading of all Karan’s movies and even though he doesn’t like them all but he reads and understands them greatly. I hope you don’t call even Rangan a sell out critic on Karan’s payroll. More than anything, he gets the minute details so well which commands longer reviews and that itself is a proof that there is enough content if you watch the movies without the anti-Johar glasses.

If you don’t care for Rangan, Aamir or anyone there’s hardly anyone can do about it.

End of discussion from my side.

        • Please also find the time to read Rangan’s review of Drona, where he found hidden meanings in scenes galore.

Rangan also liked Happy Bhaag Jayegi, a film that’s absolutely the pits, save for Jimmy Shergill’s performance.

I could multiply these examples. Rangan isn’t some sort of ISI stamp that guarantees a good/great film. And if you find Rangan’s reviews so trustworthy, you ought to follow his choices in toto.

This is true for myself and I hope also true for other reasonable people — I didn’t come out in this particular world wearing “anti-KJo glasses.” Whatever that means.

The guy makes cinema that is frothy, tedious and at least for some people, full of cringeworthy elements. Won’t be repeating myself again because I have outlined exactly what I don’t like about his films.

The problem that I have is that I try to be consistent. I can’t exactly equate a Sholay with KKHH. There are standards I’d like to follow. Within the romance genre, I’ve quite liked movies like Jab We Met, Tamasha and Lootera. The last one is a personal favorite of mine.

And just to dispel any doubts, I hated Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal. That was a shallow film, if there was one.

So it’s not as if I have a particular bone to pick with KJo. The guy is a hack and while ADHM might prove to be different, it’s hard to take someone seriously based on films as superficial (and tasteless) like K3G, MNIK, KANK or even KKHH. There’s as much depth in his films as there’s thought behind Alia Bhatt’s statements…especially the ones that don’t concern cinema.

        • Master : I think it’s possible he has talent that you see & I don’t. And very possible that I will enjoy ADMH. My comments have only been for his past films.

KKHH – bare in mind I was 16 and in love. I loved this film so much so I watched it twice in cinema. Screenplay wise I can’t fault it. Minus the designer labels in school I thought highly of K Jo.

K3G – I read even KJo wrote or spoke somewhere that he thought he’d sweep all the awards that year but was devastated by watching Lagaan. K3G…had to be bigger because K Jo had no option just like Aditya’s second film Mohabbatein. The screenplay was replaced by some good moments but some incredibly implausible elements of crying. I mean Kareena alone ruined it for me. Aping of SRK ruined it. It’s not a serious family drama, it’s too fluffy. Great songs again though a legacy he’s generally kept going. Ultimately BIGGER film then before but LESSER impact.

KANK – coupled with the theme I think the canvas was similar to K3G. But the sexed up moments are glaringly comical. He nails Abhisheks and Piety’s characters. Big B, one scene at the table steals the show. A FURTHER let down in my opinion. All actors in prime, a theme to really up the ante but his style ruins it.

MNIK – the worst of the lot. Blockaded as a film around terrorism this was nothing but another reason to ape the SRK/Kajol history & attempt to make a critic friendly film.

Making stars look like a million bucks on screen is not filmmaking. That’s a model show. Maybe that SRK is out of his system he can make a truer film. And he probably has, it doesn’t dismiss what I think of his past films.

All this and I’ll probably enjoy ADMH tonight!

I think he is keenly following Ranbir’s movies. His rivalry with SRK made him chose Salman. So rooting for Ranbir has nothing to do with Srk.
And if he says nice things about ADMH, how does it mean that he wants support for Dangal? That means he should say bad things about ADMH so that he will not be accused of padding up for Dangal. If Karan Johar praises Dangal, will people queue up for that film? As if Aamir brand is less than Kjo brand.

The manner in which footfalls are decreasing in theaters is bringing back the 80s era when video piracy had threatened to kill Bollywood!

Is it a boon or a bane to have a film release on satellite within 2 months of release? Are we killing our own industry for short term gains?

      • Just back from Jack Reacher 2. Don’t recall the first one.

Feel quite sorry for Tom Cruise. He’s not a talent like Di Caprio or Pitt, but he’s watchable. This film is quite close to Taken. The role essayed by How I Met Your Mother’s Cobie Smulders was probably the best thing about the film. Must be a big break for her.

At least the 2 central plots did not play out as in most such films the cliche would happen. Cruise is a bit awkward in these films, I’ve liked Edge of Tomorrow and his last two MI flicks, but this role doesn’t suit him. He can do better. He has a bit more depth as an actor. The Scientology stuff really has hurt his career and box office pull massively.

Some decent moments here but still prefer either Liam Neeson or Denzel Washington kicking butt.

    https://greatbong.net/2016/10/30/ae-dil-hai-mushkil-the-review/

It’s deadly boring. And irredeemably muddled.

There is a lot of love, of course, but most of it is of Karan Johar’s ek-tarfa love for his own work, and the works of those of KJo-wannabes like Imtiaz Ali and Ayan Mukherji. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a pastiche of other movies, as if Mr. Johar is doing plastic surgery, cutting off a scrap off flesh from the butt of his world and putting it on the chest, and what comes out at the end is a derivative re-assembly of everything you have seen before.

Only when your heart is broken, can you produce true music. Friendship subsumes love. There is someone for you. You can have sex with many but make love to only person. Love is madness. Friendship is peace. You only feel possessive about the one you love. Live every moment as if its your last.

Like little refrigerator magnets, these little maxims are arranged together and re-arranged again, to make three hours of “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, and if that sounds horrible, it is

Yawn! Most of these reviews seem to step out of a pre-concived notion about the film. Ive hardly come across a balanced review on what the film is really like. Im gonna watch it tomorrow, but then expecting Karan to divert his style is like expecting Tarantino to abandon his spaghetti western style because people have moved on to Nolan and Tarantino should make something like that.

Everyone’s got a genre, a style of presenting a story and that needs to be respected. But for a generation that thrives on 3-minute youtube videos and finds the good old laid-back style presenting a romantic tale boring, it’s hard to understand the point

I actually enjoyed it a lot and completely agree with Rangans review which is just fantastic in every sense. This is a movie where Karan has managed to have his cake and eat it too. On one hand he has indulged in the old bollywood kind of shayari and ruminations on love, heartbreak, friendship etc. that would remind you of Yash Chopra’s romances like Kabhi Kabhi and Lamhe, but on the other hand he has infused it with a ton of self-referential, sassy style of humor without letting it affect the seriousness of the former.

The biggest flaw here is that it reminds you too much of rockstar, but the presentation style is quite different.

        • Also one last comment here – I think Johar is good with actors, other than SRK where maybe he is just too much in love with his trademark mannerisms.

Kabhi alvida was coming on tv the other day and AB jr was particularly impressive here, acted great and looked fantastic, very well styled, which is important because it’s Bollywood after all.

True. Also even for SRK fans, Karan’s movies are never top SRK performances(except maybe MNIK).Karan is in too much awe to direct Srk well enough. But the way he presents stars is best in the industry. People can hate him for that if they can’t see beyond good clothes, helicopters and private jets and understand the emotion of the story.

        • I’m going to make a bold (!) statement here: If one has seen Ranbir Kapoor in Barfi and Rockstar, he/she has seen everything he has to offer. I’m serious.

He was a complete failure in Bombay Velvet where he had to play against type. The role was screaming for Ranveer Singh — the uncouth Ranveer from Ramleela — and it was Kashyap’s biggest mistake to pick Ranbir for that role.

The best thing I can say about Ranbir is that he’s an earnest actor. He tries. But that is not always going to be good enough. One has to bring down standards by a significant degree to call him an actor of some repute. He’s a star, all right. But that’s a different thing altogether…

          Like

        • I agree. Ranbir might end up going the HR way if he seriously does not expand his range. Surprisingly, it is Ranveer who expanded his range in a shorter time span than the above two. He might be end up taking the crown finally.

Puja Hits Diwali Releases On Sunday

The Diwali releases found it tough on Sunday which was expected due to Diwali puja. A drop was always the likely scenario and that is what has happenned. North India has taken a huge hit with collections in some cities at around 50% of day one. The early estimates for Sunday are around 8.50 crore nett for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and 6.50 crore nett for Shivaay. The drops are the opposite of Saturday as different territories behave differently on Sunday and the added factor of pre Diwali. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has best business in South and North and the former does not grow much on Sunday and the latter has been hit hugely by pre Diwali. Shivaay has lesser business in terms of ratio from these areas so on Sunday it has shown a lesser drop than Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

The weekend business of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is good as long as it goes on from here over the holiday period over the next two days which should enable it to hold on Wednesday. The weekend will be around 34 crore nett which is good for pre Diwali. .

Shivaay has more work to do as its business will be a around 24 crore nett and normally this would be lights out but now with the holiday period the film can still recover but for that it will have to be much higher than its opening day which is possible. The audience will come back in multiplexes of mass centres and that is the key for the film as if these collect very well it will mean the single screens are on board as well. If its just single screens then the film will find it tough going..

Also, he’s been actively courting and befriending the right kind of people (Zoya, Aamir, Kashyap, Ranbir, Ayan) whose finer sensibilities may well have influenced his style of filmmaking . So it’s not beyond him to make a good film.

      • KANK was a borefest. The amount of tears Rani shed in the 2nd half would have been enough to solve a years long draught in the Sahara. SRK’s overacting plus only makes the long, boring, poorly written story made it even worse.

I’ve rarely found it so tough to stay awake throughout a movie in a theatre and so many people were impatiently groaning with boredom in there. Towards the end when SRK was kneeling down and hamming it up declaring his live to a Rani (in tears again), most of the people had left the theatre. They were fed up and didn’t even seem to bother if they were to end together or not. Neither did I. SRK has done some good movies and bad ones but when it comes to boring only JTHJ beats KANK.

KKHH still remains Johar’s best piece of work. At least there was some energy and sincerity in there. Now his movies all only superficial, artificial, boring, over-long and sugar-coated with excesses of fake emotions. Only candy-floss.

For a movie targeting a limited section of audience and then doing well in that demographics, you can’t really pick out the opinion from the general crowd. Some folks were never part of the target audience who simply watch it to hate it.

I have seen Mirzya and almost everyone hated it but its appeal lies to a very limited audience and those kind of folks who watched it didn’t hate it completely. At the worst they called it good effort and average. But if you see online, you get only general reviews negative. Majority of the folks didn’t even show up to watch it on big screen and that is not against Rakeysh Mehra or Harsh Kapoor. You can’t take opinions from non-target audience for a limited appeal movies.

Just like some are workaholics, some are too lazy, some are flippant and so some are intense and passionate when it comes to love. We read youngsters committing suicide or attempting it due to one sided love. Some harm the opposite party due to one sided love. There is a very thin line between intensity and obssessiveness. Civilised people silently suffer while uncivilised ones turn violent.

    Shivaay Fights Back On Monday
    Monday 31 October 2016 18.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Shivaay is fighting back on Monday in the big Diwali box office battle. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has seen the battle go pretty much its way over the first three days back but for the first time since Friday but Shivaay has come into the picture going the morning and afternoon collections of Shivaay on Monday. The first three days saw Shivaay have low business in the metro multiplexes as Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was first choice in these centres but on Monday the strong business of Shivaay outside the metros means that Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is unable to grow much be it a Ludhiana, Lucknow or Latur and the first two mentioned are big A centres while Latur is a B centre. Below is what is happened on Friday and what is happening today (Monday) in the different tier centres of India of business.

    Friday
Metros (Mumbai, Delhi etc) – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
A centres (Ludhiana, Lucknow, Jaipur, Surat etc) – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (75% of them)
B Centres (Ajmer, Gwalior, Bareilly, Akola etc) – Shivaay (75% of them)
C centres ( Mhow, Patan, Miraj, Jaunpur etc) – Shivaay

    Monday
Metros (Mumbai, Delhi etc) – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
A centres (Ludhiana, Lucknow, Jaipur, Surat etc) – Shivaay (75% of them)
B Centres (Ajmer, Gwalior, Bareilly, Akola etc) – Shivaay
C centres ( Mhow, Patan, Miraj, Jaunpur etc) – Shivaay

The key are the A centres which were generally dominated by Ae Dil Hai Mushkil on Friday but its the opposite on Monday where now Shivaay is generally ahead. The metro domination of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil should still keep it ahead though where it was 45% ahead on Friday the gap could be reduced down to 10-20%. The clash has materialized on Monday and it could be very interesting over the next few days or so especially if Shivaay makes more strides like this tomorrow as well.

just came back from watching ADHM

i quite believe this is a mature Karan Johar who has come a long way from the candyfloss, crowd pleasing cinema of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. and quite unlike other filmmakers at least in Hindi cinema, this man constantly strives to make his films better at a personal level and not for box office gains. his hunger for finding meaning, sensitivity and maturity even in the most basic of love stories is pretty evident here. The scenes reek of detailing as well as gloss, the conversations everyday and casual yet filmy and poetic, and characters relatable yet pretty Johar like – Fashion conscious and uptown. His trademark glossy elements are all there, but there’s something quite Imtiaz Ali-like in the way Johar prefers to narrate his tale, the talk of everlasting love, importance of friendship, the crazy exchanges between the lead pair, and following one’s passion.

this is not to say Johar has succeeded wildly in pulling it off. But an important thing to note is his sincerity in infusing soul into the proceedings. At times the film appears to reach a standstill, and the filmmaker is well aware of it. he instead tells the story the way he chooses to, satisfying himself more than worrying about returns. And that is praiseworthy.

It wouldn’t have been the same without both the lead pair, of course. Ranbir is as usual dependable, providing the range the character demanded with finesse. Anushka is even better portraying a very strong female character, refusing love to seep into her relationship and ruining whatever precious they have.

the views are strictly personal. But it deserves to be seen, if at all for the performances and a more mature, wiser Johar.

    • Yes, I saw it on opening day. I thought it was a solid film. Everyone acted well, even the white actresses. In fact the main foreign heroine’s Hindi was better than most of our current heroines!

Apparently the basic premise of the movie is inspired by Taken (I haven’t seen that film so can’t comment), but the story was a nice Father-Daughter drama.

Yes definitely watch it for the mountain sequences and action scenes. There’s a whole lot of action in the movie, and I think the trailers only showed like 1/2 of the total action scenes. Songs were decent, none disrupted the flow except the one with the second Indian actress (don’t know the names of any of the songs). The film was paced excellently in the first half, but the second half could have been shorter by 10-15 minutes. Ajay Devgan as a director has improved immensely since U me aur Hum, the film is definitely his best shot movie and has the highest production values.

Overall its a good watch, however the film is kind of dark and very violent (expected since it’s based off Shiva, but still). I’d say go for it- this is a film you need to watch in theaters to enjoy as opposed to like ADHM which one could just watch on TV later.

  114. On the whole ADHM ‘debate’ I’m going to once again respond in summary fashion (as I often tend to these days on many subjects!)..

1)A film can be utterly mediocre and still be a ‘better’ example of its genre. For instance Fast and the furious is often enjoyable for what it is or it’s not the worst example of its genre but this doesn’t otherwise make it a worthwhile film. If you like animals eating people (as I do) or disaster movies (also as I do) there are better films and worse ones but 99% of the time the films are still non-serious and mediocre. So just because a film is good at what it attempts doesn’t mean very much. Because ‘what it attempts’ might just be silly entertainment! To get to Johar then KKHH is perfectly fine for what Johar is trying to do. The film struck a chord with its target audience and worked very well. But again what it is trying to do is utterly impoverished. In every sense. Note that I am not saying it is wrong to enjoy such films (I just admitted I love films in which lions maul humans mercilessly..) but one also should feel the need to defend one’s enjoyment as ‘superior’ in any sense. One is simply enjoying silly stuff and we all prefer certain kinds of silliness over others.

2)Connected to this is the question of the audience. An audience can be mostly bankrupt in its tastes in a given age. One can examine the sociological reasons here or what have you but the final result is still one that exposes the audience in unfortunate ways. Here I am not talking about films that have a limited audience but major commercial successes or mainstream successes of any kind. Here one can very easily compare different ages and find one superior or inferior to the other. So even if an audience likes one kind of film it doesn’t really say anything worthwhile about the film. Audiences have in fact rejected important films (or those that were judged important over time) at least as much as they have accepted them. This in every industry of the world. Even at the arthouse end of the equation a list of ‘great’ or ‘greatest’ films usually has more box office (originally) flops than successes. The same goes incidentally even for critical opinion which too for the most part reflects the concerns of an age and is very rarely ‘prophetic’ to any useful degree. So important films have not just flopped in many cases, these have also been ‘dissed’ by critics. Incidentally this was one of my long-standing arguments with Utkal who could never quite come to terms with a film of value not being liked by anyone (initially).

3)On the box office finally I’ve said this only a hundred times before but what the heck, I’ll say it once more! I regard the whole diwali set of excuses as bull (sorry to be so blunt about this). This whole nonsense about pre-diwali and laxmi puja and this and that and what not. For the simple reason that I never heard such excuses for Diwali till recently (over the last decade or more). When SRK’s films released on Diwali and did very well no one said these things. Today everyone does all the time. Of course similar excuses are made in some other cases too. For decades Diwali was a big thing. Presumably Diwali patterns haven’t changed suddenly for folks. Clearly no one thought anything of all these patterns to make it an issue. The trade too never discussed it. But not it’s always mentioned and if you correlate these explanations with films that fail or at least underperform you have your answer. No one was making these diwali excuses for KKHH (or BMCM that released the same day). Other examples could be cited. If you have to go show by show, day by day.. there is already a problem! The other slippage here of course is that ‘any’ level of weakness is explained away. In other words even assuming some truth to this argument it might be that ‘x’ is ok as a gross on day 1 as opposed to ‘y’ (x being y minus some factor). However what is defended is usually ‘x’ minus ‘any factor’. So even if one takes these argument at face value there is some minimal dishonesty to the claim. This doesn’t of course mean that ADHM cannot do well with trending. It simply means that it has opened relatively weakly for the genre. Now it could be that this genre cannot open that strong anymore or that WOM is strong enough so that the film can eventually trend very well but all of this has no bearing on the basic fact of its not opening strongly. Again the slippage here is introduced when a jump (say a couple of days later) is defined as the optimal one. So even if the film does a lot more today or whenever that doesn’t indicate that it is not performing weakly because it is stronger only relative to its initial number. That’s a lower bar if not a low one. Put simply a film could do 17 on day one and then do 22 on day 3. There’s no reason why it should start at 13 and do 15 or 16 on day 3 (or whatever this magical day is). My classic example here is that of Don (the remake). The first one was always sluggish, similar excuses were offered. It didn’t trend too badly but the collections never quite jumped hugely either. There was the JeM competition of course but that film did’t do much. Some years later Don2 had the Christmas release and with all the holidays in the world that film too was sluggish and had a total which all things considered more or less matched that of the first film. Again all of these examples could be multiplied.

4)By the way I am always for examining things comprehensively. Competition and trending and so on. But that’s not really the point here. And by the way I do agree with the Dhoni movie parallel. It’s not just about a biopic. Various 100 crore grossers in the past have already deconstructed many of the 100, 200 grossers with much bigger stars. You can’t say that 100 is ok for Ek Villain and the same is also ok for a film with a much bigger star. So on and so forth. One doesn’t have to make direct comparisons but irrespective of release date if a film on Dhoni opens bigger than a Johar film in that genre with Ranbir in the lead one must admit this is a problem. It might be a Johar problem (his films aren’t as hot anymore) or a Ranbir one (going through a weaker phase) or a genre one (simply outlived its heyday) or a combination of the three. Whatever it is the ‘there’s nothing to see here’ deal just doesn’t make sense. And incidentally the usual suspects (Taran/Nahta) have also had a somewhat muted reaction to the numbers so far. Of course if the film trends strongly they’ll pretend this was never a problem but that’s another matter.

5)The film might be better than any number of Johar films but that’s not the debate here. Similarly one can like it a lot if one doesn’t mind that kind of cinema. That’s also not the debate. I haven’t seen the film but my educated guess based on everything I’ve heard here anecdotally (and read) is that it’s probably fine in the first half but gets bogged down in the second. This is a classic Johar problem. We saw this even in Dostana (he was the producer) where a very zany first half was Joharized in the second and lost its edge. The problem isn’t melodrama as a genre. It’s that Johar doesn’t know how to do melodrama! He was probably ok at it in KKHH. even in K3G it was overdone. But it’s not just melodrama. Anytime Johar moves away from Saved by the Bell terrain he reveals his weaknesses. And the only reason Johar isn’t wallowing in his (mediocre) strengths is that times have changed since KKHH and K3G. He’s felt the pressure for years to make something more meaningful. It’s not as if he’s suddenly maturing as he likes to pretend. Again I don’t have a problem with what he attempts. I have a problem with the pretentiousness. I will check out ADHM at some point. Probably not in the theater.

    • I have very good rebuttal for your #3. You are far too intelligent to not get such a basic issue. Will try to put down some thoughts in a while.

      • Point #3 Rebuttal.

If you see Bollywood history, first it was about silver jubilees then 100 days etc. Even during KKHH or K3G days, you had Silver jubilees at some cinemas. But by the time multiplex era started the whole business structure has changed. Now they don’t release movies in few theaters and expect them to run for 25 weeks and make them 100 crores. Instead they flood the cinemas and try to get the 100 crores or safe position by the time WOM kicks in. This way the movie even with bad WOM will still manage to get some returns instead of getting killed completely.

When this started Industry’s records started decreasing. Before it was lifetime total and that still exists. Then the other records was ‘first week’ Even during K3G, it was the 1st week record mentioned. When Main Hoon Na released, it broke the K3G first week record and it was the big news The movies continued with Veer Zaara and then Fanaa. Even during Om Shanti Om and Rab Ne movies the records was still about 1st week. Rab ne did 44 crores and then Ghajini did 57 crores 1st week and it was phenomenal. Then slowly the releases got bigger and then everyone started targeting 1st weekend records. Earlier industry never cared. We have 3 Idiots first weekend record and then that was the standard. Then Ra.One broke it and so on. When Ra.One released on Diwali day, it just opened for 15 crores. The day after Diwali (which is unofficial holiday in India) with even negative WOM it managed to do 25 crores. This was an eye opener to the industry. That’s it. It was the highest collection in a single day. Everyone wanted to better it from then. The whole point of releasing on Diwali day which was from ages has been put away from this year. Everyone wanted to get the maximum opening before the WOM kicks in.

So, Ra.One was in 2011. which might be the last major movie to release on Diwali national holiday.
Next year – 2012 – YRF who always releases movies on Diwali started this trend. The movie does not release on Diwali, it does day after Diwali. JTHT and SOS both released on Tuesday Nov 9, 2012.
2013 – This was an exception. This had same issue as 2016 Sunday Diwali. Roshans wanted to release Krrish 3 on Monday and there was lot of back and forth and according to some astrology, Roshans went ahead with Krrish 3 on Friday and it was very low weekend. This was done just 1 month before its release. Many articles out in the media(http://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/krrish-3-release-preponed-to-november-1/)

2014 – Diwali was on Oct 22(wed) but Happy New Year released on Oct 23 and created 1st day huge record.
2015 – Diwali was on Nov 11(wed) but PRDP released on Nov 12 and created 1st day huge record.
        2016 – Its same as 2013 issue.

So, basically if you want to target 1st day record you can’t release the movie on Diwali. It was done for ages but no one were targeting 1st day record that time. Now the release structure is different and no one in right mind is still NOT releasing the film on Diwali day(which is a national holiday). You think they are stupid to miss out on a national holiday?

For example: this Diwali on Sunday -ADHM collected around 9-10 crores. Its a Sunday and national holiday. Then you have Monday, day after Diwali and its not even a official holiday and yet the collections will be twice of Sunday. Isn’t that clear?

If there is no impact about Diwali pujas… how can Sunday and Monday be opposite? Sunday with bad WOM if its 10 crore.. Monday should be more lower but how can it be twice? You can’t close your eyes for such obvious explanation.

        • Monday the two movies have done total of 34 cr between them whereas Sunday was just total of 15 crs. What more proof is needed that pre-Diwali exists. Sunday is a universal holiday but that collects less than half of a Monday?

        • I think both of you are missing Satyam’s point to an extent. At an absolute level of numbers & % drops you are right. But relative to the film in question and its base opening you’re off the mark in my opinion.

          1) I am only using producer totals for purpose of illustration & indicine.
          2) MS Dhoni opened at 21cr on Friday. On similar or more likely 2 films covering higher demographics (youth/family/single screens/cities etc.) ADHM / Shivaay combined have netted 23.5cr. Now one can say there is a hint of pre Diwali interference for these combined films but I will counter that with a section of the audience “may” have caught both films not on first day but over the weekend. Break it down. MS Dhoni only has well MS Dhoni, the lead is a nothing in this debate. ADHM/Shivaay combined have Dharma/Devgnn/Ranbir/Anushka/Aishwariya etc. The combined should literally hammer the individual. Not the case.
          3) Absolutely you are right films are showing jumps – you only know this now as figures are available & you can number crunch. The same patterns would have existed decades ago on daily basis but industry knowledge not so readily shared or available.
          4) The crucial point is if your base is lower than expected on absolute basis the jumps are low on absolute too. It’s only after the last year sites are introducing such lingo as trends/base is low/collections at lower end etc.
          5) Both films have killed each other. The ego is such that they are willing to forego the MS Dhoni release date where over a 4 week spread it probably had 1,000 screens cumulatively (say 4.5k, 3.0k, 1.5k, 1.0k – whatever it is) to go up against another equally big film for a cumulative spread of 5,500 screens (2.5k, 1.5k, 1.0k, 0.5k) for 1, let me repeat 1 day! If you are in the business of films for a one day bounty you might as well invest your money in penny shares!
          6) A clash rises everything, expectation, costs, opening etc. But if you in need of a hit that risk is best avoided.
          7) Plenty of non holiday releases have netted north of 100 crores. Both here will struggle to combine a total of 200 crore as evidenced by BOI Diwali article…with exception of PRDP.
          8) The Don example deconstructs everything be it Diwali or Xmas. A relatively weak film/product will eventually demise quicker than a superior one. D3 is bigger brand than P.K but guess what P.K with superior content lead on first week (not opening day). Yes Master the model has changed, but the total collections haven’t. The means have yet to justify the ends! I suspect they won’t till a content driven film deconstructs everything again.
          9) Krish – Pre-Diwali probably existed 50 years ago when on Diwali a film made 1 lakh & New Years Day went up to 1.5 lakh. But if the 1 lakh is relatively weak in first place – the film is at fault not the way Diwali falls.
          10) Master the current model you allude to only promotes poor films as a producer knows however bad his/her product is they can cover cost over 2-3 days, just to do it again. It’s very unhealthy for an entertainment business to work this way. It’s like T-20 cricket it will improve strike rates and faster runs in test matches, but the fundamental strength of a batsman in test cricket of defending your wicket will depreciate quick. Forget about the demoralizing impact on bowlers!
          11) Essentially both films will struggle to catch MS Dhoni who is renowned for his running between wickets & coolness none of which has been displayed in this clash. Johar has remained splendidly quiet & suggests little wrong doing (except for apparently “employing” the Pakistani actor who distinctly could have been replaced by Virat Kohli!)

        • Jay, you’ve made the point far more lucidly than I did. But all of this is exactly right. And of course I never denied that numbers change depending on the holiday period one way or the other. Nor that collections might be lower on certain days and higher on others as a consequence. Just that every kind of performance cannot be explained away doing this. and your point on openings vs final grosses is also important because people pretend as if openings are all it’s about when for Aamir should by now have proved the opposite (and some other films as well). Inferior films are made that fizzle out after the initial or that underperform at the very least. The number is of course huge but not extraordinary otherwise or not record-breaking and then these explanations (pre-diwali or whatever) are brought up. Put differently if ADHM was on a 200 crore track (not an unreasonable expectation given YJHD.. I accept of course that the film that ‘is’ could not make 200) all of this stuff about pre-diwali or competition would be irrelevant. Bajirao did 160 or more with competition and Dilwale still did 135-140. So once again the reason I distrust the ‘microanalysis’ in these matters is that the forest is deliberately missed for the trees. I can understand why ADHM or Shivaay opened that way on day 1 and why they jumped up on day 4 or whatever but that’s not a complete explanation of the films’ box office. Finally PK is also the right example. When a film does eventually what PK did no one cares what day 1 or day 2 were. However when Sultan doesn’t then similar explanations are used. And this has been the historic problem in this sense. One starts off with an assumption and then twists the evidence to match the initial claim. The evidence is of course there but it’s not a sufficient explanation for the overall fate of the film.

          Like

        • Will add one more point/observation
          12) It seems clashes are taking on another perspective/assumption. Dangerous territory & another “bet” / “assumption” that can backfire. Not only are the decision makers willing to split the business, but it seems they are 1) “assuming” their product is superior or 2) the other’s is not or 3) if both are good their’s is still better. This explains why certain stars/projects will flatly be avoided in a clash as the weaker incumbent knows they stand little chance. Hence why Salman & Aamir tend to be avoided till now & why a big film with a big star in Dhoom or Hirani would be avoided. You’ve got to be certain of success, very few people in Hindi cinema can be. SRK/YRF/Dharma had this power in 90’s / early 00’s but its shifted to certain brand films like Dhoom or Krish (with Hrithik in a good career position otherwise I think even this brand could face opposition) or stars like Aamir & Salman or Hirani. This is a dangerous assumption, another variable that is very subjective as Shivaay/ADHM proves & Dilwale/BM proved even more emphatically. Essentially there are no guarantees & I don’t know who made the call on when to release Jai Ho or Talaash but they avoided the big 3 holidays as they avoided projecting to audience a big big film. Both under-performed but not on a major holiday which could lose bargaining power for future big holiday dates.

        • “Put differently if ADHM was on a 200 crore track (not an unreasonable expectation given YJHD.”

I don’t see a point to react to whole post when your goalpost has changed now, will reply to this 1 line. But ADHM was never on target for 200 crs whenever it was released on clash. I was trying to find the post (where you too agreed) that Ranbir coming out of bad form and Karan’s last movie doing 60 crores..the realistic expectation of this movie is 125 crores and hence they sold it exactly at that price where it becomes HIT at 120 crores.

I always had an idea about the story(even when you were adamant its Doosra Aadmi remake) and that story idea is limited in appeal. So 125 crores with a clash is good success for Ranbir and Karan at stage of this career. As I said in earlier posts, Karan has stopped doing the biggest blockbuster types of films and he’s gone personal now and he’s happy to get a ‘hit’ tag and not necessarily the biggest hit of the film. His directed movies are not designed or targeted to appeal to pan-India anymore.

          Like

        • No I haven’t changed the goalpost. I didn’t expect it to do 200 myself for the reasons you’ve mentioned. But a film in this genre can do as much. Now if one argues that it’s because of the storyline and so on that’s fair but then one must provide this kind of allowance for a lot of films. Yes Rockstar could have done a 150 had it been a more obvious kind of film. And where does this logic end? Raavan couldn’t have made more than it did given the kind of film it was! Had it been a more regular story it could have done more. The point is one is creating this fantasy scenario where a film belongs to the right commercial genre and is also completely safe in every sense. Otherwise there’s always an excuse for underperforming. This is bizarre logic. ‘We knew we had an underperformer so we budgeted the film accordingly’! What next? Johar aiming for the 50 crore hit? Again not rejecting the reasons for ADHM. I too expected this. But that’s very different from saying such a result is completely normal. A YJHD kind of film can put up big numbers at the box office. Most films in that genre won’t for all kinds of reasons. But the potential of the genre remains the same. And it’s not just about 200. Whatever that optimal number is for ADHM it’s implausible that it’s the very same as a smaller Akshay film. of course it remains to be seen if it even gets to 125 but assuming it does the fallacy in the argument is suggesting this is a low grossing film by design. Whatever Johar attempted, whatever themes he was trying to explore, maybe he just did a bad job. Maybe with the very same material another director could have got 150 or whatever. There are certain ‘different’ films that cannot work beyond a point no matter how well made they are. But this doesn’t mean that every failing film or underperformer falls in that category. As for Johar he’s not stopped anything. You make it sound voluntary. He’s just unable to get the biggest grosser or something along those lines as he once used to. And he never appealed to a pan-Indian audience. It was always a major metro deal (one of the reasons why RH even in the 90s and releasing a year before KKHH outgrossed that film.. and since we all seem to be interested in ‘footfalls’ these days it had an even bigger spread in that context.. now had multiplexes been more of a factor then KKHH would probably have outgrossed RH by quite a bit). The only thing that’s changed is that his strength genre has declined but also with the masala wave and the right stars and/or other genres with the right combos you get films that sell well across the board, at least on the initial. You can’t match that with those 90s genres all else being equal. But again I liked Rockstar and I wasn’t surprised it did more than its total. This doesn’t mean the film did perfectly at the box office. Yes ADHM might have limited appeal. So do a 100 other films. In some cases it’s box office failure without questions, in others we introduce all these qualifiers.

          Like

        • I’ll offer another example here. I loved Dil Se. It wasn’t hard to understand why it didn’t work. But if someone had budgeted the film a certain way (incidentally Ratnam is always good on budgets.. months after release and despite saying the opposite initially Nahta himself admitted that Raavan despite failing wasn’t too bad in financial terms) to allow for a certain box office safety that could hardly have been called an optimal result for the film. Take even Yuva. A film which did a bit more than Company (even if the media coverage was diametrically opposed) and which wasn’t too bad all things considered. Still this still didn’t satisfy overall expectations from the film. SR was budgeted extremely well and was pretty safe and even profitable just on the initial week. But it didn’t match the numbers of the first film (allowing for inflation and so on). Again looking at the film versus the first one this was less surprising.

finally there’s a difference between a niche film and/or different film and/or even a commercial film that has a risky narrative that is then released a certain way to allow for those factors. In such a case you’d get a certain audience and it would be stable at that lower end. This might happen with ADHM as well but a big Diwali release doesn’t otherwise satisfy those criteria. JA was liked enough by a cross-section of the audience to trend well enough. But it was otherwise a big loser for UTV in various ways. The genre was risky, the film was long but despite all this there were greater expectations. Dil se wasn’t released as a little film hoping to get a smaller audience. Nor was ADHM.

  115. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil put a good worldwide number up on the board due to strong business in overseas markets. The GROSS business in India is 46.50 crore and in overseas it is 41.50 crore. The gap is smaller than normal due to the pre Diwali affect in India. The NETT to GROSS ratio is also lower than normal as it has a higher than normal ratio from Nizam / Andhra, Mysore and West Bengal all of which have taxes lower than the national average. Despite it being pre Diwali it is still the sixth highest worldwide number of 2016 beating Airlift and very similar to Rustom. Sultan and Fan head the charts with M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story being the other 100 crore plus film. The top worldwide grossers for the opening weekend in 2016 are as follows.

    1. Sultan – 210.12 crore

    2. Fan – 113.31 crore

    3. M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story – 108.38 crore

    4. Housefull 2 – 98.76 crore

    5. Rustom – 90.32 crore

    6. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – 88 crore apprx

    7. Airlift – 78.08 crore

    8. Dishoom – 64.81 crore

    9. Baaghi – 64.58 crore

    10. Mohenjo Daro – 58.36 crore

Ae Dil Jai Mushkil has the potential to go 200 crore worldwide though obviously the Wednesday number in India will tell. In Overseas the film is a HIT.

After collecting Rs 13.30 crore and Rs 13.10 crore on Friday and Saturday, “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, which released in around 3000 screens in India, only managed to mint Rs 9.20 crore on Sunday, thus taking its cumulative total to Rs 35.60 crore, read a statement from the makers.

  122. hivaay showed a huge jump on Monday as collections were around 70% up from day one. This was because the mass markets came to the fore as was expected and single screens generally were recording full houses due to the big holiday. The film had a low weekend but the Monday figure has put it back in the race and today is a partial holiday and again mass centres perform well which could aid the film. The film was doing very strong numbers in the Central India belt of Rajastan, CP Berar and CI and alos in Bihar. Both Rajathan and CP Berar both crossed 1 crore nett which only Sultan has managed this year on any single day. The first four day business of Shivaay is as follows.

    Friday – 9,15,00,000

    Saturday – 8,25,00,000

    Sunday – 6,50,00,000

    Monday – 15,75,00,000

    TOTAL – 39,95,00,000

Shivaay should have another solid performance due to the partial holiday for Bhai Dooj and like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil it will be Wednesday that will decide where the week is going and give an indication to where the film is headi

    • Agreed. I fully expected this response to ADHM after watching the film. It’s a completely bipolar film. If one buys into its premise (and the lead characters) willingly then it’s easy to look past the film’s shortcomings. If one gets distracted by Johar’s obvious Joharisms then it can easily become a maddeningly frustrating experience. Either way, it’s easy to justify one’s stance.

I was seriously surprised that I fell asleep for a short period especially during the title song and when Ranbir meets DJ Ali again. As a big movie fan, I cant remember the last time that happend in a movie hall.
One of the main protagonists getting a grave illness, is very much a possibility these days with the high rates of diseases, but still felt too cheesy..and those bald heads funny. It took away some of the novelty and didnt make Ranbir never achieving his love of life any more interesting or heartbreaking. It was better when he lost it to another man earlier in the movie. I guess this was an easier explanation for Karan, maybe saved him writing all the more dialogues for Alizeh explaining why she wasnt willing to be his GF.

This is a movie which will not be liked by all. I however liked the movie a bit more than you, though not much.

      *spoiler alert*

Movie is actually summation of episodes shot at different locations:

First half episode 1: I enjoyed the Lisa Hayden track with Ranbir and Anushka, shot in London. The chemistry between Ranbir-Anushka reminded me partially of Before Sunsrise. Ranbir and Anushka are fantastic here and direction by Kjo is top notch. 4/5

First half episode 2: This is shot in Lucknow (originally in Pakistan but got changed to Lucknow later) and has the best moments of the movie. Ranbir is extraordinary here. Direction by Karan Johar is superb and probably gives his best ever. 5/5

Second half episode 1: This is shot in Vienna/Paris and is most idiotic and senseless episode. The climax of this episode, however is good(dinner at Aishwarya’s house). The title song comes in this episode and is a big disappointment. KJo’s direction falters here. Aishwarya is a complete miscast. SRK comes for a moment but looks odd in his unshaven look. He should avoid doing Cameos. 3/5

Second half episode 2: This is a complete letdown. Shot again in London and this is where Ranbir gets to know from Fawaad that Anushka has left. From then onwards KJo choses a writing of convenience for the climax of the movie. 2/5

Good thing about the movie is the characterization of Ranbir and Anushka’s role. They are consistent and this ensures that the movie gets a soul. However the characterization of Aishwarya and Fawaad goes horribly wrong.

      Overall: 3/5

  126. Shivaay Shows Big Jump on Monday
    Tuesday 01 November 2016 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Shivaay showed a huge jump on Monday as collections were around 70% up from day one.

Shivaay should have another solid performance due to the partial holiday for Bhai Dooj and like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil it will be Wednesday that will decide where the week is going and give an indication to where the film is heading..

    • Shivaay has actually performed relatively better so far. About 11-12 crores separate it from ADHM but given the kinds of screens each film depends on a lot of this gap can be accounted for anyway. I still expect ADHM to be more stable going forward but Shivaay has surprised me. On Monday it’s just 2 crores behind which is quite remarkable. Which incidentally also makes my other point! ADHM even on Mon isn’t doing anything extraordinary otherwise the multiplex advantage should put it a lot more ahead. As it was ‘pre-diwali’! It could nonetheless have a stable audience at this somewhat lower end. That remains to be seen. But the box office fortunes of both films so far make my point perfectly.

      Like

      • ADHM has jumped 100 percent from previous day. That’s because of pre-Diwali. The reason the difference is lesser is because south which is the big scoring centre is static. There is no jump there. Additionally the A centre multiplex have jumped more for shivaay. ADHM is primarily now ruling only in metro. All other places shivaay is ahead.

        Like

        • Actually 18 cr is actually a fantastic number for a movie with no single screen support and primarily riding on multiplex of metros. We will see a bigger fall on Wednesday for AdHM I think

          Like

        • I think you’re continuing to evade the point. I won’t get into the debate of what the jump actually is and so on. A film might make Rs 10 on day 1 and go to Rs 20 on day 4. But what if it could actually be making Rs 15 on day 1? The problem with all of thee box office narratives (and not just on this issue) is that they keep defending whatever is even when there’s clear evidence of whatever can be. So when films were opening around 40 crores and only doing 60-65 this was considered to be the only thing possible. Some of us were making trending arguments even then but we used to hear about how films were more front-loaded these days and those old days of good trending were gone. Then Ghajini suddenly got to a 100 and with good trending. Then 100 was the new limit and no one could go beyond this. Till 3I came along. At every point not only are these limits arbitrarily set but under performers are justified. So a film going from 70 in week 1 to a 110 overall is considered fine because ‘hey more isn’t possible’. I could go on and on as I have been for years without getting convincing answers. I’ll say this one more time and as bluntly as possible. I simply don’t buy the box office narrative that the trade in India sells (referring to those who talk about it online) or that sites like BOI sell. Because the narratives offered are a complete lie in most cases even where the numbers might be somewhat plausible. The latter in itself is not a big deal when it is tied to a false narrative. It’s difficult to know how good or bad numbers are when one doesn’t know the standard against which they should be measured. Tied to this is all the budget stuff, the distribution numbers and so on. None of this stuff is verifiable, these numbers are just thrown out and one is supposed to accept them without question. So if you question someone on one unverified claim the response is usually another unverified one. I fully expect you to once again get into the weeds on the ADHM pre-diwali numbers! But how do you know? What’s the evidence for anything you’re saying beyond quoting BOI or someone else? How do they know? What are we usually told? ‘Oh when they invite distributors home for a cup of tea they get the numbers’! Some such fiction. Somehow these same distributors never give anyone else this info. Meanwhile the likes of Taran who otherwise have all kinds of numbers in their trade journals just quote producer numbers online. Then you have occupancy rates given out all the time where every person chooses the number that matches their narrative and looks at theaters selectively. I could go on forever. It’s all a big racket. But yes it has a market as various star partisans wish to accept one narrative or the other. By the way I’m not saying that this racket sustains the box office. A distributor knows whether he’s made or lost money on a film. He’s not exactly bothered about how it’s reported!

  127. All Time Top Mondays = ADHM 6th Shivaay 8th
    Tuesday 01 November 2016 14.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay managed to record huge numbers for a Monday thanks to the big holiday. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has the sixth highest Monday ever and Shivaay is in eighth position. The cumulative business of the films is 33.50 crore which is more than what Krrish 3 recorded in 2013 whose Monday also fell on the same day. The last two opening day records set by Happy New Year (2014) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) have also come on this day which further indicates its the best day for box office collections in the year. PK is still the highest non holiday Monday but that film kept weekend ticket rates on Monday and the highest Monday without a holiday or enhanced ticket rates is Sultan which released earlier this year. Below are the top ten first Monday collections of all time.

    1. Krrish 3 – 29.64 crore (Holiday)
    2. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 26.78 crore (Holiday)
    3. PK – 21.15 crore (Enhanced Ticket Rates)
    4. Dhoom 3 – 19.87 crore (Enhanced Ticket Rates)
    5. Ek Tha Tiger – 18.96 crore (Holiday)
    6. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – 17.75 crore (Holiday)
    7. Rustom – 17.48 crore (Holiday)
    8. Shivaay – 15.75 crore apprx (Holiday)
    9. Sultan – 15.52 crore
    10. Singham Returns – 14.69 crore (Holiday)

Fortunes of both the diwali release has revived in the sense that noone will be a disaster. This makes me wonder what wrong did MohenJoDaaro do to not enjoy similar jump on Monday and why Rustom did not jump further despite doing 60-90% throughout the day?

    Dangal –

The promo looked very good on screen and its title track rocked big time in Dolby Digital surround sound. Its looking set to be a huge hit.

    Dear Zindagi –

This might turn out to be SRK’s best movie post Chennai Express. Promo had several sweet moments and am also glad that it’s not clashing with Kahaani 2, but instead coming a week earlier.

While I was watching the film, I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was bothering me about Alizeh. Here and there, Anushka seems a little over-done, maybe too studied, but not enough to ruin anything. And anyway Alizeh is a somewhat closed-off person, so her temperamentalness and snits could reasonably result from sudden panics of her inner fortress being breached. Alizeh is dangerously close to MPDG at times, but she gets enough independent personality and arc that in the end that label would be unfair. Then I read this excellent piece by Piyasree Dasgupta and I realized: she’s mean, and she is written so that she is established as “good,” empathetic, and desirable in comparison to another woman who is “bad.”

KJo also failed to direct SRK in his cameo, so much so that the superstar seems to have been transplanted from an entirely different project. The “nobility and strength of unrequited love” dialogue he is given is exceptionally facile, in a weird contrast to the lugubrious lines of Saba the poet and the much more normal-sounding speech of the younger, less guileful Ayan. If that dialogue was necessary, SRK, echoing back to his Darr stalking days, was the perfect person to embody it, but the lines and the performance of them feel so shoehorned here. The awkwardness of the situation makes sense, but the lecture does not.

  138. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil continued its good run on Tuesday with a 30% apprx drop from the big holiday with collections of 12.50 crore nett apprx. The film was doing well at city multiplexes from day one (barring Sunday due to Diwali puja) but the last two days has seen the film perform well in mass belts due to the holiday period. Although the figures in these markets are not as high as Shivaay they are still very good for this type of film. The film has collected over 64 crore nett in five days which is a solid total though the first test will be Wednesday and then again on Friday. The first five day business of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is as follows.

    Friday – 13,04,00,000

    Saturday – 12,50,00,000

    Sunday – 8,75,00,000

    Monday – 17,75,00,000

    Tuesday 12,50,00,000

    TOTAL – 64,54,00,000

Despite Shivaay being the closest its ever been on Tuesday since release, the Delhi city and East Punjab numbers on Tuesday showed a bigger lead in the favour of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil than on Monday and the way these markets hold after the initial week it may make it hard for Shivaay to catch up despite making inroads in the last two days though that remains to be seen.

The collections of the film were very good in the Central markets and Gujarat and good in North and Bihar. The five day total is over 50 crore nett and the film has done more business in the last two days than it did over the weekend. In terms of collections against Ae Dil Hai Mushkil it is the closest its ever been on Tuesday. The gap was big over the weekend and looked a one sided clash but the last two days has seen Shivaay makeit more of a fight as far as the domestic business is concerned The first five day business of Shivaay is as follows.

      • The BOI reports aren’t negative really but neither movie will be going too far really. I think ADHM will wrap up below 110cr while Shivaay will be 95-100cr at best. Their combined gross will be PRDP’s, a movie released a year before and which had under-performed and trended very poorly after a great start.

With these kind of collections, it means that KJo is still out of the big league. His best film remains his debut film nearly 20 years back.

For Ranbir, it will be a small come-back of sorts after recent debacles. But not enough especially with a long delayed Jagga Jasoos being his next. He needed a bigger one keep him floating until the Hirani project releases.

For Devgan, it means not much as an actor. He remains in the same position outside of the big 5. He’s seen bigger disasters in the past and survived them. Rohit Shetty will probably bail him out with a crap movie for next Diwali and he has got a good track record with Luthria with Baadsaho coming up. However, he is going to find it tough to get big investments as a director.

In fact, the rumours further stated that due to these similarities the filmmaker had postponed the shoot of the film so as to make modifications to their screenplay as there were similarities in the story’s setting with that of the film ADHM. However, laying these rumours to rest, director Homi Adajania denied them saying, “It’s nothing like that at all. We just felt that we needed to rework certain angles, mainly on the structure of the screenplay to improve it. Once this is done and we are happy with the changes we will commence the shoot process.”

He mentioned that during the term of the Marxist government, which ruled the state while he grew up, there was a specific focus on the arts. He used to watch seminal works by great artists (Bergman, Tarkovsky etc) in school, as a student.

I wonder if that’s the reason behind the aesthetic choices that I get to see in Malyalam cinema. The presentation is low key, there’s a lack of massy, masala moments, and the general standard of acting is very restrained. All of which I happen to love, of course.

Vidheyan by Adoor Gopalkrishnan is a masterpiece. I was led to it by GF’s review on this very site. Riveting stuff, and also very difficult to watch. Mammootty is excellent as an embodiment of pure evil.

Drishyam, the original one, with Mohanlal was also a very fine watch. I absolutely loved the suspenseful latter half (Hitchcock would have given his nod, I suspect) and also Mohanlal’s performance as a street-smart everyman.

Mumbai Police, another fine drama, defined by its leisurely pace and deft handling of a suspenseful narrative, was also a good watch. The film is based around the idea of an unreliable narrator, in this case the main character’s (Prithviraj) memory, which he loses in the very first scene. The opening scene is uncannily similar to the opening shot in Talaash.

Also watched Bala’s Pithamagan, in Tamil. Quite liked it, even though it isn’t exactly my cup of tea. I was more impressed with Suriya in the film than Vikram, who had the author backed role. I like the fact that Bala focuses his attention on the most neglected sections of our society, the people about whom not many fleeting thoughts are spared…let alone the idea of making them the centerpiece of a film. Would like to see more from him.

Shivaay review from the heart: Bollywood doesn’t deserve this Ajay Devgn film
Shivaay was meant to be an out-and-out action flick, and a good one at that. Here is a review of the movie from the heart.

Vivek Surendran | Edited by Ananya Bhattacharya

    New Delhi, November 1, 2016 | UPDATED 13:46 IST

Before telling you all why I feel Bollywood does not deserve a mammoth of an effort like Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay, watch the first trailer of the movie that was released on August 7. The trailer has already garnered 2,60,22,754 views, by the way. #JustSaying
I was bowled over by this trailer, and to prove I am not faking it, here are a couple of tweets I had posted then.

I couldn’t, however, catch the first day first show of the movie, and I regret it. But I finally saw the movie yesterday.

First things first, after scanning through many reviews that appeared on my social media feed, I realised most of them trashed actor-director-producer Ajay Devgn, a two-time National Award winner for Best Actor, and this vision of his, entirely. And I guess I understand why

Let’s talk about the introduction and the first half of the movie

Ajay Devgn’s introductory sequence was jaw-droppingly amazing. The CGI was impressive and AT LEAST a hundred times better than the flying crocodile in Mohenjo Daro. The sequence establishes, in the first five minutes, Shivaay’s expertise in mountaineering, his stamina and strength. It is also good to see Devgn, the director, using it to his advantage in the second half.

Now, let me break it to you. Shivaay is Taken in Bollywood (albeit unacknowledged), and I think it did justice to the Hollywood action-thriller. Taken, having been made in Hollywood, cut to the chase, began with Liam Neeson’s daughter being kidnapped. Shivaay, on the other hand, dedicated enough time to build a love story that had a conflict, and also took time to establish Shivaay’s relationship with his daughter.

I agree, Devgn takes advantage of the fact that it’s a home production and that he is at the helm, when he makes teenage girls say, “Oh my God! He is so hot!” But come on, why not!

After a bit of a drag, the chase sequence after Shivaay’s daughter gets kidnapped, is one of the best action sequences in Indian cinema. YES!

And the interval is when the Shiva in Shivaay is all set to open his third eye, the eye of destruction.
Ajay Devgn, donning the director’s hat for the second time, chose to make an action movie this time. And he has done a fantastic job at that. In fact, a review on Rotten Tomatoes says, “Honestly, the film isn’t as bad as some reviews are making it out to be, in fact the film is mostly engaging thanks to its excellent cinematography, good action set pieces (for Bollywood standards) and Ajay Devgn’s powerful performance.”

Devgn, much like Neeson, is a wounded, aching, disturbed father who has lost his 8-year-old daughter to a human trafficking barbaric group. Why wouldn’t any father break all rules,

From a loving father, Shivaay turns into a violent monster who destroys anything and everything that stands between him and his daughter. When Shiva opens his third eye, he doesn’t destroy selectively. It’s mass destruction. That should sum up the movie’s second half for you.

The villains look menacing, there is a twist towards the end, and of course, spectacular action sequences (yes, logically flawed, but we don’t see a lot of logic in Fast and Furious series either

    Like

    • “yes, logically flawed, but we don’t see a lot of logic in Fast and Furious series either”

That’s precisely is the problem. Fast n Furious team don’t think they have made an Avatar!. They know its a popcorn action movie not to be taken seriously and keep it under limited length. Basically they know where their movie stands. People compare it with Taken as its the same plot but that was so fascinating 90 mins thriller. If they make Taken into 3 hours, it would also fail. I don’t think Ajay is saying this is popcorn action movie, don’t take it seriously. Also, the review is talking about logic but that was never the complaint in majority of reviews. The usual complains – doesn’t bind you emotionally and movie is too long and folks get bored(actually I didn’t get bored).

Honestly, if you don’t shoot Shivaay in foreign country it loses the uniqueness and its becomes just another Mardaani.

  143. The curious case of BookMyShow User Ratings: Shivaay and ADHM

Now that the hype around the Diwali clash is coming to an end, it’s time to write about something that we have been following closely over the last 4 days. The ‘user ratings’ on the popular ticket booking website ‘BookMyShow.com’ is loaded heavily in favour of Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay.

Out of 56,467 votes received for Shivaay – 61% of the total voters rated it 5 stars. On the other hand, we have the other release this weekend, which is performing very well at multiplexes. But for some reason, the ratings are abnormally negative – even when compared to some of the biggest box office disasters of the year.

ADHM has received 52,865 votes – out of which a whopping 42% ratings are for 1 star.

This raises a couple of questions:

Can BookMyShow ratings be hacked or manipulated? While ratings on IMDb and other websites make little or no difference to ticket sales, BookMyShow ratings can impact business of films because people see the ratings before booking tickets. Nowadays, most people also trust ‘user ratings’ more than ‘critic ratings’.
If BookMyShow ratings can be hacked into, and a production house or fanbase can create multiple accounts or use bots to negatively vote for a competing film, it could be used in the future too as Bollywood enters an era of box office clashes.
Check out the screenshot of the ratings of the two films and tell us what you think in the comments section below:

    • If we go on twitter 90% of Shivaay WOM is and 90% of ADHM is negative. There is open talk among the trade. that all the +ve WOM on media for Shivaay is paid. Hence such articles are coming out. Obviously I understand some folks will like Shivaay but it can’t be like 5 star everywhere and majority of the mouthshut reviews are 5 stars as well.

And then Nahta mentioned the Mon holiday jump. Taran talked about UAE collections initially. Neither one has gone crazy over anything here as is often the case. Specially given it;s a Johar film. The film(s) can still trend well but the point is that relative to everything else the numbers are so far very underwhelming. When these guys can’t spin for Johar you know something’s gone wrong! Of course if ADHM remains stable and does a hundred or something they’ll probably talk about it.

Whereas Taran has been very sick of late and stopped doing movie reviews. There is daily few tweets mentioning the producers numbers and basic update and I don’t think even he’s tweeting that. Someone might be handling his twitter account to do that few updates daily.

Finally, ADHM is not doing a Sultan or PK to mention any superlatives. It is just a ‘Hit’ film at best for now.

I wouldn’t compare him to Jordan in any sense (wouldn’t compare Kobe to Jordan either) but he’s been that ‘central’ player for his age. On the other hand Curry has time on his side. Already he’s the player compared most often to LeBron.

Kobe is retired probably closest player to Jordan; In terms of size and playing style.

Curry shooting is out of world. Couple of days back he broke single game 3-point record (13-17 3’s). I think by the time he retires all shooting records will be his.

ps – In spite of some good and talented players, good teams are one which have a system; San Antonio Spurs are always good irrespective of who is in team, same with New England Patriots.

  146. Ranveer Singh compares his Padmavati role to Heath Ledger’s Joker, says he is scared.

Ranveer Singh compared his negative role in Padmavati to that of late Hollywood actor Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight (2008).

The 31-year-old actor plays the antagonist in the film While Deepika Padukone plays queen of Chittor Rani Padmini, Ranveer plays Alauddin Khilji, the Khilji dynasty Sultan. Shahid Kapoor plays Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, Mewar’s 42nd ruler.

In an interview with Filmfare magazine, Ranveer Singh spoke about his role, “I am absolutely petrified. It takes a lot out of you. Sometimes you feel empty…Like you have got nothing left. I probably may need some mental therapy. It does affect me to that degree. Hopefully, after Padmavati, I will do something light to keep a balance. I need time to recover.”

Interestingly, the Befikre actor compared his role to that of late Hollywood actor Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight (2008).

“I am on the threshold of entering completely uncharted territory. I’m scared of stepping into that rabbit hole. I fear if I go in, I may not come back. Like Heath Ledger. He didn’t come back. He went so far into the rabbit hole that it took away everything from him. I can say I’m living life on the edge,” Ranveer said.

Playing the villainous character Joker reportedly pushed Heath Ledger into depression due to which he began taking drugs to cope up. The intense preparation for the character eventually led him to overdose on painkillers one night. Heath Ledger died on January 22, 2008 when he was 28 years old.

Padmavati is scheduled to release in theatres on November 17, next year.

Expect SLB to be at it again. It has just gone into the making and SLB is already trying to market it as the most expensive movie ever. They are talking about a 175cr budget, or ‘budget bigger than Bahubali’. Expect SLB to then declare profits as soon as it does a 20cr opening!

Oh boy. Guess that tells one what one needs to know about how seriously to take Bhansali’s representation of Alauddin Khilji… It’s like when Gowariker said in an interview that one of the inspirations for him on Jodha-Akbar was Amar Chitra Katha; I like those as much as the next guy, but it’s kinda depressing that as a culture we remain addicted to imbibing history solely as stories, fables, good v. evil plotlines. The problem isn’t so much those modes, as the fact that no other modes are even recognized in popular culture…

The collections came down around 40% from the day before but it was Bhai Dooj which kept collections in parts at very high levels. A Wednesday figure of 7.50 crore nett with a few pockets still in holiday mode is a good number for the sixth day. It will be Friday when the film settles to a normal value as the holiday period will continue on Thuesday in parts though less than Wednesday. Delhi city and East Punjab are not in a holiday period and the film is doing well in these two markets and these markets are set to hold well and out perform over the second week. The first six day business of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is as follows.

    Friday – 13,04,00,000

    Saturday – 12,50,00,000

    Sunday – 8,75,00,000

    Monday – 17,75,00,000

    Tuesday 12,50,00,000

    Wednesday – 7,50,00,000

    TOTAL – 72,04,00,000

It remains to be seen where Thursday lands as the film will probably fall more than normal as more parts of the country come off holiday period..

The Wednesday number is under 6 crore nett and there is a further drop to come on Thursday as other parts come off holidays. This will probbaly leave the film needing a very strong hold between Thursday and Friday to get a good second week number up. The near 57 crore nett business is decent till now but the film has to go on from here. The business is good in UP, Rajasthan, CP Berar, Ci and Bihar and very good in Gujarat / Saurashtra but some of these places are being held up by holidays. The first six day business of Shivaay is as follows.

    Friday – 9,15,00,000

    Saturday – 8,25,00,000

    Sunday – 6,50,00,000

    Monday – 15,75,00,000

    Tuesday – 11,00,00,000

    Wednesday – 5,75,00,000

    TOTAL – 56,40,00,000

Like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil the film will fall on Thursday more than normal but still the film will cross 60 crore nett in week one and then it becomes about where that second Friday lands.

ADHM probably has enough of an audience to do 100-110. Unless of course the second weekend is stronger than expected and it adds another 10-20 to that number. It’s probably ok as a business proposition either way but this is a barely semi-respectable performance! But hey (and going by some of the theories here) maybe Johar will aim for 50 crores next time! Shivaay of course is a commercial disaster irrespective of what it does from here on. Just too expensive a film that isn’t going to be remotely close to any sort of recovery. But I;ll certainly admit that I didn’t expect Shivaay to put up any sort of fight.

Not great results, considering the budgets of the current movies. Similar to MNIK, the fact is that for ADHM, the movie will probably rely on overseas to recover its costs. Shivaay looks like a loser in metros.

The how and why behind the mindless display of wealth in Karan Johar films

      http://www.hindustantimes.com/bollywood/the-how-and-why-behind-the-mindless-display-of-wealth-in-karan-johar-films/story-uS40KoFy00mfgs2S5D3mUO.html

In a career spanning over 20 years, director-producer Karan Johar has become synonymous with a unique brand of cinema. His every directorial is high on emotions, almost always features the biggest stars of Bollywood (except for Student of the Year), has a music album boasting of at least one song of every major genre (romantic, a party number, a festival song and the one that becomes a huge hit at the weddings), mostly deals with rich people living overseas and hence is a spectacular display of their wealth.

As a viewer you know what to expect of his films — designer clothes, exotic locales, good-looking actors, a melodious background score and a lot of unexplained, senseless, in-your-face grandeur.
In the aftermath of the release of yet another typical KJo offering, we list a few instances of unexplained wealth from his movies that make us go “How? Why?” every time we see them.

      Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
KJo’s latest movie sticks to his trademark tradition and does not disappoint at all. As is the case with his every other film, it’s grand without reason. Sample these instances:

We are filthy rich but we still get excited about hotel rooms
In one sequence of the film, Anushka Sharma’s Alizeh and Ranbir Kapoor’s Ayan land in Paris in a private jet but they share one hotel room since they cannot afford to buy two. Really?

Also the “private jet-type” rich Ayan and the “raees” Alizeh can’t keep calm at the sight of their perfectly ordinary hotel room and launch into frenzied excitement at the prospect of a freshly-made bed, toiletries that they can steal and the 24-hour room service….”

Anyway to clarify my earlier comment on the box office fortune telling – there are none established checks & balances and it is a free for all reporting to a large extent. Through interviews stars/actors have themselves admitted within the industry/trade everyone knows exact figures and what has been done realistically. It’s just that these two parties are fighting a perception battle in public’s mind…..the only thing common is both have suffered this clash.

Clash se yaad aaya – twitter is abuzz with Raaes postponement or preponement of release date. The tweet more or less gives a clear hint of a thank you note – okay this is how i perceive and I may be wrong. so do cut some slack here……

Shetty- Did not interact much with him, but his one liners were fun to read, still a mystery to me as to why he did not migrate to SS.

Abid/ Tango- I had the UP wala connection with him. would have been a great asset to SS if Satyam and him would have agreed to bury their long standing feud. LOL

The first big action set piece is spectacular and relentless. It keeps going on and on, and just when we think it’s over, it goes on some more.Unfortunately, so does the film. It runs a numbing three hours, with increasingly laughable characters. (Especially the bad guys. Among Shivaay’s shorthand for the depth of human behaviour is a passion for opera.) Thrillers need to be tight, focused – and Devgn keeps slowing the film down for sentimental stretches. But then, the Hollywood leading man doesn’t face the compulsions that drive his Indian counterpart. Neeson can just be a hero. Devgn has to display heroism. Shivaay is some sort of holy trinity all by himself – god, superhero, and father of the millennium.

  155. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil had a good first week grossing around 78 crore nett in its first week which is the fifth highest first week collection of 2016 after Sultan, Rustom, M.S.Dhoni – The Untold Story, Housefull 3 and Airlift. In terms of all time it is the 26th highest of all time. The biggest plus for the film is that it took an initial despite it being pre Diwali so despite the film not really able to make any headway on Saturday and Sunday it still had a healthy weekend of nearly 35 crore nett. Then there was a big holiday on Monday which gave the collections a good lift and it maintained well thereafter though was with the support holidays in parts.

The film has done well in the metros which expected but the weekdays holds were due to the holds in mass centres. In many centres of UP it has actually collected more than Shivaay over the week and this is despite it being an urban film. The collections in Lucknow are even better than another mass film Housefull 3 and only behind Sultan and Rustom for the year. This has happened due to the music and holiday period otherwise there is no chance of this type of film clocking up around 1 crore nett from a centre like Lucknow.

The best performing circuits over the week were Mumbai and Mysore with the former being helped by an extended holiday period in Gujarat and the latter raced off too a huge start as there was no affect of pre Diwali and grossed the second highest first week figure of 2016 of around 7.25 crore nett. North was affected hugely by pre Diwali especially on Sunday but its likely to hold well in week two. The eighth day will give an idea of its lifetime business and despite its good first week a good total on day eight is still crucial.

Dhoni – The Untold Story, Housefull 3, Airlift, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Fan. the difference between the collections of Shivaay and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil can be put down to the poor start that Shivaay took at the multiplexes of A centres. The collections fell further over Saturday and Sunday giving it a low weekend. It had a huge jump on Monday due to the big holiday and did well on the next day but then collections came down to a lower level. It is probably coincidence but the first week collections are in the same range as other Ajay Devgn films like Golmaal 3, Bol Bachchan and Son Of Sardaar. All these films are around 61 and 62 crore nett and have the best first week collections for an Ajay Devgn starrer outside Singham Returns which crossed 100 crore nett in the first week.

The best performance has come in Mumbai circuit as the Gujarat / Saurashtra belt has done very well due to extended holiday periods. Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI and Bihar have also done well as all these circuits scored over Ae dil Hai Mushkil. The poor business has come in Mysore and West Bengal but that happens for most mass films. North India is so so with collections below Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in most centres of Delhi NCR, East Punjab and UP. The Thursday to Friday fall is very important for the film as it needs a very strong hold to put up a good final number. If its the regular 30% drop then it will probably be looking at average performance on a best case scenario.

if AHDM and Shivaay had done even better they could have been the 12th and 13th best starts of the year…

  157. Karan Johar to cast Shah Rukh Khan – Aishwarya Rai Bachchan together again – http://www.bollywoodhungama.com
And now Karan Johar is all set to cast the Devdas duo together again in his next film. Says a source close to the development, “In Ae Dil Hai Mushkil they look so good together. They bring the roof down when they are together. Karan feels he owes Aishwarya a full-fledged role. He has an idea for a film which works just fine for both of Shah Rukh and Aishwarya.”

    • Ughhh, the “old” KJo is back quicker than I thought. SRK looked nothing but flimsy & tired in his 2min role, not saying whatever dialogues he was given were not profound but his look is not great. Look at him in Dear Zindagi, way more better because he can hide his aging eyes and face with a beard & shades. The look in ADHM is of course reality, just wouldn’t work. I read an interview of his from 2012 where he was smoking 100 a day; that will eventually take its toll on your aging process.

I doubt the story to add as I think SRK has wisened up – hopefully.
