What in the world is going on?! Hard to believe between the posters and now this trailer that this isn’t some caricature of a film but the sickness here is that it is actually meant to be taken seriously. Just unbelievable..
2 things have been ever-present in every poster and now in the trailer:
1. Kissing
2. Kissing at exotic locations
Aditya Chopra is consistent here. At least, one can not blame him for inconsistency!
The problem is bar the 2 things mentioned above, there is absolutely nothing else to look forward to until now. And while kissing is a wonderful thing, you start feeling that Chopra is over-doing things here. And it starts becoming ridiculous after a while.
We have to remember Aditya Chopra’s best work is over 20 years back.
From then on, there have been a couple of successes but nothing notable as cinematic achievement.
So, while I am not expecting any masterpiece from him, this still falls below any expectation. Satyam terming it as crazy might be the understatement of the month.
It looks like a B-Grade European movie-wanna be. And I am being extremely generous here.
bold and yashraj films just don’t mesh…if this were a more serious director at the helm…then yes i would be all for it and genuinely celebrate gay kissing couples shown in an indian song…but this seems fake as hell to me.
YashRaj is phony as usual…the entire thing is phony. Using a minority group like this is pretty low. I would like to think they have genuine intentions…but their past films does not give me any indication to think anything other than phony.
Sanskari Censors will not let this fly.
But do hope they actually pass it unedited. Sex starved North Belt Males need overdose of such harmless imagery in order to imbibe relationship building rather than brute force while dealing with the opposite sex.
I have a feeling this will be passed without any cuts. YRF has always had it easy with the censor board. Talk about connections and being the most powerful production house in the country
IMO, Vaani will be the reason if the movie doesn’t work. She’s not that of an actor anyways and now doesn’t even look great. She was alright in Shudh Desi Romance. This movie needed another female star opposite Ranveer especially after Bajirao’s fantastic act and stardom!
It’s come to the point (or so I imagine) where these days when important stars are signing up with Yashraj their one condition is that Aditya not direct!
I really don’t get this from Aditya Chopra. YRF has been giving moster hits with his production house so it’s not like his short on money. He could have let his freaking janitor make this movie with 2 new comers and no one would have cared. Instead, he does this ‘conversation with Yash Chopra’ nonsense and everyone was intrigued. Now we get a bunch of posters with the lead pair kissing, a bland song with the entire Paris kissing, and now this trailer which makes you scratch your head! I am not a Karan Johar fan but his small movie (Student of the year) looks like a damn oscar contender in front of this piece of crap!
Vani was supposed to star in Sultan as they were zeroing on a new pairing and she would have fit the pahalwan role to a tee and movie would have been a bigger hit as one could sense the cold vibes between the lead at places, but going by tabloids, Adi bhai lost his heart to this protege and replaced her with a quick fix Anushka and wanted to do some roula rappa with Vani in Paris.
Adi is still better than 90% of bollywood and he is not going to put his name on this flick just for the heck of it. I am expecting something out of the box….may be a tragic love story after the kissathon is over !!!
Meanwhile looking at the fate if Mirzya, when was the last romantic flick with fresh pairing which worked in a big way.
YJHD did work to an extent and so did JTYJN but it seems days of MPK / QSQT / DDLJ or even a KHPH are long gone and this generation will not see their Love Story or Ankhiyon Ke Jharoke Se or even a Betaab.
Yeah but as you stated there dialogues seems old and visuals and music are new.
I always believe that a decent love story or any story can succeed at the box office. I don’t know if this is the one. But if other love stories have failed blame the story, writer, director, actors etc! not the subject.
Between Ram Leela had succeeded to my memory. (albeit a few years ago and that to in bhansali territory!) (I guess deepika and ranveer came in it together for the first time?)
Even though I didn’t like the trailer, I believe the announcement on Bekfire on last year’s Yash Chopra’s birthday is to the Tee! I
This is not the biggest film for YRF, not the safest film and not even a sureshot 100 crore film and yet Adi wanted to make this for his personal reasons. After long struggle with the 1st marriage and divorce for a decade and then finally marrying Rani last year and then having his 1st daughter(on Dec 9, last year).. Adi has never been this happy ever in his life. That’s why he took off little time off from his other production and directed this 2 month movie in Paris. It can be a flop as well but he isn’t mounting this like a biggie but just a light hearted romantic movie(which could have been directed by any of his assistants) and releasing exactly on his daughter’s 1st birthday. Everyone around him said the same thing.. they have never seen Adi so much happy that even if this is a misfire, its gonna be fine. He has produced 30-40 films and he deserves to do this experiment and 1-off thing.
If you think, even Karan was not looking to direct STOY and Punit Malhotra was assigned to it but when the movie came closer to start, he took over the reins and did the movie and it turned out well as he ended up launching 3 new actors with the movie. It was a 1-off thing and now Punit is directing the STOY 2. Now, when AEDM promos are on, everyone knows that Karan is back to his real space. Similarly Adi will be back to his real space after Befikre.
Vaani’s Kad Kaathi is similar to Tabu when she entered the industry. I remember I said same thing then but later I started liking her and not just for her acting.
Important thing is she looks different and seems to be suiting the role.
So like my all optimistic opinions and non- prejudiced approach, I will reject the observations above. Vaani is good. 😄
Vani fits the Hindi cinema voluptuousness quotient very well and would have been a hit from day one. She is not fit for these breezy romances much like Kat who is a misfit in BBD and Fitoot. Aditya Chopra seemed to have held her back for reasons well known to him. She would have easily jumped to Khan / Akshay league if given a free hand and may be a top shot like a Deepika/Katrina. Something is missing in this whole link since her first release. I would go on that route much more if this was a Pinkvilla site and respect for the blog holds me back.
Ranveer, along with his co-star Vaani Kapoor was in Paris, to unveil the film’s trailer at the Effiel Tower. In a tête-à-tête with a popular daily, RS candidly spoke about the kissing to the striptease and his wild chemistry with Vaani. The actor shared that he will be seen butt-naked in Befikre on the condition that the Censor Board passes it!
Ranveer quoted to a daily, “I am actually naked in the film! You heard it here first. Hopefully, if it gets passed, you will see me butt-naked in ‘Befikre’. And I’m really really looking forward to it, to watching that with the live audience.”
Hindi movies have been obsessed with casual sex in western nations for a long time now. So many films have scenes with Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan or Ranbir Kapoor sleeping with tons of young foreign women and mouthing the cheapest lines and nobody has objected. There are even films that have shown Akshay Kumar slapping white chicks and running them over with his car and literally treating them like disposable dolls or films where groups of guys keep cheating on their wives abroad. But when a film shows an Indian couple having casual sex- with the girl being equally comfortable with casual sex and objectifying the opposite gender- then everyone becomes holier than thou and super critical. I’m not shouting that this looks like a great or classic film. But it seems better than quite a few Bollywood films set abroad- most of which simply do not get such a terrible response.
Hard to believe this is Adi directed!!. Well then again , this might just be a full blown up movie of that Uday Chopra, Shamita segment of Mohabbatein…All three of Adi’s movie had a good traditional old fashioned romance core at the heart. That piece seems missing in this and that might be its biggest undoing…
It’s hard to muster up excitement for something that looks this inane, feels Raja Sen.
It’s a setup we’ve seen many times before — most recently in the Sunny Leone starrer One Night Stand.
Then Ranveer propositions her, after which she dares him to slap a policeman. Only then will she go outwith him.
Singh obliges, following which we see a montage of dares, most of which involve public makeouts and the leads walking around in their underwear.
From this glimpse, it all looks terrifically tacky — the shot of Singh strutting through a black-tie gala in a cowboy hat and white briefs, for example, is reminiscent more of Gunday than anything watchable the actor has been in.
The dares seem repetitive, the actors look uncomfortable — especially when making out in a car, with their body language all wonky and wooden — and simply throwing some French words into a Hindi trailer doesn’t automatically class it up.
The film releases on December 9, and right now it’s hard to muster up excitement for something that looks this inane.
The trailer ends with the two of them riffing on a DDLJ routine and making a gag of it, because, as we know, it isn’t humanly possible for Aditya Chopra to avoid referencing his greatest triumph with every single Yash Raj production over the last two decades.
Nashe Si Chadh Gayi is direct copy of Matargasthi from Tamasha. Not the song but the vibe, situation and premise of characters and no strings attached relationship. Aditya is inspired by Imtiaz Ali here!
Matargashti was more about two people having fun in a foreign locale. The choreography is more impromptu and child-like than the well-rehearsed moves in Befikre. At the moment, the latter looks like a disaster in the making.
Ranveer Singh might lose all momentum that he had built up with Bajirao Mastani. Time, obviously, will tell…but at the moment it looks like a dumb move to sign up for any Aditya Chopra movie.
In the 90’s working for YRF would have quite a big deal & of course as someone mentioned working in an Aditya Chopra directorial meant something. Now with such expansion of the factory in the 00’s YRF is not what it use to be. This really feels like Aditya’s MPKDH moment, a moment of madness to modernize for no reason. Looked a disaster from start.
Ranveer has simply made a terrible choice here.
Obviously my opinion is only based on the promos and allow space to be proved wrong.
Befikre, which translates into carefree in English, is also perhaps an apt title. Judging by the promos, the paying public isn’t likely to care even if the tickets to this film will be offered free.
Trailer seems fresh and the vibes too work, but once again a case of desi indians living in lala land where the reality seems something else with most nri keeping up with the taxes and bills !!!
Ranveer gets a good makeover and fits the cool and urban swinger but Vani is out of place and too broad for him. Gives the feeling of ‘budhi ghodi laal lagaam’

Dare to fly high with the Befikre vibe! Here’s #UdeDilBefikre | @RanveerOfficial |
I just think that giving the benefit of the doubt to trailers like Befikre is a bit too much. We’ve lowered the bar so much in this sense. Here I think one even has to defend Yashraj/Johar from the 90s. For that age the films (even if problematic in many ways) were fine. We enjoyed them. They haven’t aged well and so on. But they weren’t like the stuff we’ve seen since from the same folks. Compared to RNBDJ DDLJ or even KKHH is Sholay (sorry Rocky..). I still like DDLJ a lot (find KKHH unwatchable). A trailer or campaign in which it’s all about the kisses is simply a film for 12 year olds (and I don’t mean to insult 12 year olds). Unfortunately Hindi commercial cinema in its Yashraj/Johar guise has catered to teens for a very long time (KKHH even borrowed set designs and situational things from stuff like Saved by the Bell!). The only thing worse is when these guys try to do ‘mature’ films because that’s a 12 year old’s understanding of the adult world. they still have their better days but as a director it’s incredible how low Aditya Chopra has fallen. Johar even as a director has still done much better than this. Whatever ADHM is or isn’t I suspect it’s way better than RNBDJ and I don’t even want to dignify Befikre by introducing it here. I’d also take KANK and MNIK over RNBDJ (even if I had serious political problems with the latter and was bored in the former in many portions).
the thing is that in contemporary India we love certain kinds of public figures. Karan Johar and Arnab Goswami are two sides of the same coin. They differ in their political views (not in their social attitudes as much). Basically New India has spawned a certain kind of aspiration and these personalities in different ways represent it. They have many issues as far as I’m concerned but the problem I’m getting at here is (and this is what appeals to many people) they represent a certain kind of public figure who is fluid in English (always necessary!), who is exposed to global trends (cinema, media, whatever) and who wishes to peddle that kind of image and indeed sees himself (usually these are male figures) that way. The problem is that there is always a huge gap between that colonized self-image and the reality. Sticking to films Johar is often great to listen to or watch on a public forum or something. He’s fluid, even talks meaningfully on the subject. But you can’t really believe it. It seems like bull given all the choices he’s made as a filmmaker and plus given his own personal likes/dislikes in this regard. So there’s this whole spiel, this whole wannabe deal where one pretends to be like a Hollywood professional or where one talks about the festival circuit or one talks about the dynamic Indian market and the new ‘cinema’ opportunities and what not. And at the end of it all what does one direct or even produce? And the pretense is that that’s about commercial choices. The thing is that once upon a time filmmakers were more honest about this stuff. They knew it was the money and they weren’t pretending. The risk-takers existed in every age and they do so today also. Just taking your essentially ‘safe’ paradigm and added a twist here and there isn’t really taking risks. Incidentally I’m not saying one has to do this. If Johar wants to keep doing KKHH he should. But don’t pretend that KANK or MNIK is something pathbreaking (I’d argue the opposite, relative to what each film is trying to achieve I think those more ‘mature’ films are worse). By the way this isn’t just about Johar even if he’s a more public figure than most others. And it’s not just about the filmmakers. There are those ‘fans’ who think Imtiaz Ali is Fellini! There’s a whole New Indian generation that is by and large hyperbolic about not just anything but those ‘signifiers’ (for want of a better word) that suggest they too are part of a globally dynamic community (in this case it just means greater colonization). It’s not just the actually works but an entire vocabulary that is deployed from films to sports, when judging actors and cricketers. I could get into very many examples here but I don’t want to make this too long. But in general the standards for judging these things are just abysmal. And when the truly authentic film (in even a limited sense) comes about it’s rarely appreciated or liked so much. Again I could provide many examples. By the way I don’t have a very high opinion of Hollywood either but that’s another debate. Now getting back to the likes of Johar I don’t mind someone making films only about the social classes there familiar with. These guys just don’t have the experience of life that their parents did. But what’s more problematic is making infantile films. These guys never grew up (though they always pretend to.. barring Salman of course..). There’s no excuse for this.

“My Second First Film” In the words of our Director #AdityaChopra. It’s all about being Befikre. #BefikreOn9th| #TheBefikreSeries https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cy5ctvTXEAIiwZV.jpg:large
I’m afraid Aditya Chopra will next ask himself ‘what kind of film would I make if I were 10 today’? That’s where this logic is leading! But then this is the classic Bollywood spiel these days. make junk and pretend it’s about finding ‘freedom’ or some such bull. The Karan Johar version of this is overusing and abusing terms like ‘grammar’ and ‘syntax’ (of a film). Unfortunately the kind of audience they often deal with at venues like India Today and so on this kind of vacuousness works rather well! Again I don’t have a problem with people making junk if that’s all they’re capable of. Just don’t pretend it’s something more. Even if it’s a somewhat better film than usual don’t pretend you’re pulling off a Raj Kapoor!
This film is completely out of touch. Youth are not like this. It’s quite a desperate attempt to shock and awe. The trailer in theatre went down poor. It’s like Aditya meets the Bhatts.
Ranveer’s and Vani’s interview with Anupma Chopra has given me some hope. They both kind of criticized the trailer and said that they were baffled as well ….but they said Aditya did not want to give away too much and that they trust him!
Personally I think he is a better actor than Ranbir.
Looking at that latest sensible statement from Aditya Chopra on Befikre, there may be an element of surprise here or few take away in terms of novelties….
@ “I just think that giving the benefit of the doubt to trailers like Befikre is a bit too much. We’ve lowered the bar so much in this sense. Here I think one even has to defend Yashraj / Johar from the 90s.”
Is it time to eat words? Let’s get Mr. Satyam out of stupor and talking again !
Usually Aditya Chopra does not give sound bites to media so if true this is high praise. Even otherwise among the 2nd rung heroes along with Varun his performances are convincing and if only he could cut down on the ‘media driven’ musical chairs of his love life which comes across fake / brings down his class.

Ranveer Singh was Shah Rukh Khan for me. The same energy, the same brilliance, the same intellect: Aditya Chopra https://goo.gl/LVVKZJ
Ranveer Singh was Shah Rukh Khan for me: Aditya Chopra
Aditya Chopra talks about ‘Befikre’ and why he couldn’t think of anyone other than Ranveer Singh to play the role of Dharam. He also talks about why he saw a Shah Rukh Khan in his new leading man:
Dharam (character played by Ranveer Singh) is someone who I wish I could be, but I was never carefree enough to be. Dharam is a man who will remain a boy all his life. For Dharam college never ended, the party never stopped. He is so happy being himself and making everyone around him happy that it literally becomes his job for life. If this is the character then there cannot be any other actor but Ranveer Singh. Ranveer is Dharam, Dharam is Ranveer. Even before I knew that I’m going to direct this film, I was writing it for Ranveer. He was actually the leading man of Befikre even before I was the director of the film.
Now, I have directed only 1 leading man all my life, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan. And any director who has worked with Shah Rukh knows that he is a very bad habit that you just cannot get over. He just makes your job so easy that you actually can’t think of making a film with anyone else ever. But before doing our next film together, I had to do this one film without him and I was really scared. I was scared because I truly believe that in all the films that we have done together Shah Rukh is the reason I came out looking good, so am I going to be exposed now?
It would have been unfair to put this pressure on Ranveer or for me to take this pressure myself, so I just didn’t think of it and dived into this film as a new adventure with a new leading man. But the strangest thing happened. From the very first day that I directed Ranveer, he was Shah Rukh for me. The same energy, the same brilliance, the same intellect. I knew I was in safe hands. It’s not that Ranveer acts like Shah Rukh or his process is like him, it’s just that the way Shah Rukh used to better my work and cover my flaws, Ranveer did the same for me. I know that for Ranveer its a very big deal to be directed by me but honestly, I would not have made Befikre if an actor called Ranveer Singh did not exist.

Folks are really underestimating Aditya Chopra here! Even thought he’s making movie after ages its not like he is out of movies touch or something. He is constantly producing movies and in very much know of the audience’s tastes. This movie will be 10 times better than the trailer! I can vouch for it! Now, lets wait for Friday!
Lets just say movie will be fine and work very well for the city audience. Aditya Chopra is not that dumb of a movie person. Just wait for Friday and it will throw in a surprise!
Every movie is target specific, only few films are pan-India in this day and age. To make you clear, YRF is not even releasing Befikre in Single Screens and will be released only at Multiplexes!
Its futile to discuss if you don’t know such basics. Its like going and checking out WOM for Dhobi Ghat in Bihar’s single screen to know the public reaction. It doesn’t work that way. Anyways.. I better spend time on something better!
I’m not trying to protect the movie here but basically gave my prediction/expectation that it will be success for its budget and well acceptance from city audience.
You assume Bollywood knows the Indian market so well that many producers / distributors can target their markets with such aplomb, yet the flop ratio of films is like 95%!!!

Ranveer to be butt-naked in Befikre!

Le sigh

Yeah the MPKDH comparison is apt.
Befikre, which translates into carefree in English, is also perhaps an apt title. Judging by the promos, the paying public isn’t likely to care even if the tickets to this film will be offered free.
