“Sports teaches you hard work, team spirit builds your concentration, you learn how to take a defeat. Whatever I am today, sports has had a huge contribution. My focus, the way I have applied that. The passion I bring to my work all that has come from sports. So, I think as a nation we have to think differently about sports,” Aamir added.

The actor, however, added the reason behind doing Dangal was not to promote sports but it was the film’s script which got him on board.

“I loved the script. When Nitesh Tiwari (the film’s director) narrated me, I laughed, I cried. I just loved it. That’s the only reason I do films. I don’t do films because I want to promote a particular social issue or want to help sports. No, because I have a responsibility towards my audience and that comes first for me,” he said.

the strongest words yet in favor of the film.. might seem to odd to say this given they come from the film’s lead but given Aamir’s track record and his sense of scripts I think we can take them very seriously. The same wouldn’t mean much coming from just about anyone else.

      • Master:

Actually this is not everything.. Just read below lines and you know how fascinating the script can be for Aamir to devote so much time for a single project.

Aamir loved the script but he was not ready to play 55 year old so soon in his career. Then he again heard the script after 2 months and gave it serious thought and loved all the details added but still he decided it wasn’t right time for this movie in his career and can be done after 5-6 years. Then he was hearing lot of other scripts but couldn’t find anything even remotely close good enough like Dangal and then as Aamir puts it, “But I couldn’t get the script out of my head, so I made Nitesh (Tiwari) narrate it to me a third time after eight months, and I decided I just want to do it yaar.”

So Aamir being so cautious greenlighting a script like Dangal took almost a year and it can’t be without merit when the only motivation here is the ‘script’ unlike Thug or other Hirani movies where you still have association with producer/director to overlook the script factor at least little bit.

  12. Sultan doesn’t need to be a top grosser to make any difference and Salman is very much beyond the box office battles and charting his own path…..much like doing a Capstone course in Bollywood where rest are still in prerequisite mode.

Now as a moviegoer, I would be pleased if Dangal is appreciated and recompenses for the efforts put forward and is a Lagaan type moment for Aamir after a Mela. ( Mela being the obnoxious press conference here ).

More importantly looking at the state of affairs, nation needs that one movie with common grounds to unite us all and appreciate cinema without any prejudices. In recent times apart from Lagaan, TZP was one such nationalistic moment.

thecooldude, let aamir do a prem ratan dhan payo and not look like a cartoon on screen in those costumes. let him give awe inspiring sultan climax / crescendo or a bare chested ek baar maine commitment kar di with a pistol in hand….or a simple chulbul pandey mouthing “Hum tum mein itne ched karenge, ki confuse ho jaoge ke saans kahan se le aur paade kahan se”.

Let each of them operate within their own comfort zone because this how they survive and turns out to be their usp.

    • When it comes to Salman, you just operate in vacuum without even bothering to read the context!! Dangal ke thread mein Salman ki ‘dabangai’ dikhane ka kya matlab?? You need to relax a bit as Salman’s reel and real life antics are ‘renowned’ worldwide without needing any testimony 🙂 As far as Salman’s acting chops are concerned, let Salman himself believe in your fantasy of him being ‘the thespian’, then we’d discuss it further! On an aside, I’ve never seen Aamir being so confident of any of his movies in the past as he keeps showing it to his close ones without asking them to remain secretive or tight-lipped about it, is kind of unprecedented move from Aamir as his usual tendency has been to keep his movies under wraps before release!

    • yeah all the tweets on this one have not just been strong but extraordinarily ecstatic!

Incidentally if Dangal does those kinds of stratospheric numbers it will be hard for his Yashraj film to catch up. But in any case he has once again an incredible one two punch.

If one looks at the entire history of Bollywood and compares all kinds of stars on the subject of career management, i.e. relative to the magnitude of the star, genre strengths (or not), potential in various ways.. I am fairly comfortable saying that Aamir’s career management since Lagaan has been the single best. ever. And again to clarify when you’re the sort of star who hits it big with a genre and keeps repeating or the kind of megastar who rides an absolute crest that’s a different dynamic. But here you have a very carefully constructed career over this period and to have that kind of uncanny judgment and success rate for 15 years and still counting is nothing short of stunning. Of course he’s been a brand-name for precisely this reason for a while now but it takes great skill to get to that point and then to keep making films where one way or the other the audience doesn’t think you’re betraying that ‘vision’.

and this is where his marketing IQ far supersedes everyone else in the business. Don’t wait for the trailer to come out before you start promoting your movie. Show it to a few industry folks where someone like KJO (who has never met a preview he didn’t like) and Javed Akthar and Shabana Azmi (who are very careful with their praise) and get the ball rolling. No one even thinks about showing their movies 3 months in advance no matter how they feel about it. This is where Aamir separates himself from the so called marketing experts.

        Like

        • yeah the thing is a lot of people think it’s ‘only’ about the marketing. You make a passable film and then hype it like crazy. You certainly get the right opening this way but the film never has any legs. Even the biggest openings fizzle out and do far less than they’re on course for initially. With Aamir the marketing might be clever but it’s always based on substance. Even when the films don’t work in a relative sense (MP, Talaash) people certainly get these are sincere efforts.

  21. Again, there seems to be TOO much praise here..calling it 400 cr block-buster or the best in a decade. Of course will be happy if all this is true, but am still doubtful. It definitely might be a very fine movie, but not too sure of the hyperbole by Karan etc..

On the other hand, IF it is true, then this will be one of the strongest achievements for Aamir after Lagaan where a director who’s had a reputation of being mediocre turned a full corner..This Nitesh Tiwari just has the Bhootnath Returns movie which was average but lifted up solely by Amitabh’s presence. Now for this director to churn up what everyone’s tweeting about, it is one hell of an achievement. And once again Aamir will turn out to the man with that Midas script-sense. How is it that average directors turn up fantastic films with this guy? Maybe the ghost-direction rumor and script-interference is true after all..he’s proved his directiorial skills in TZP..

Nitesh Tiwari actually has the ‘Chillar Party’ to his credit which is debut film with fantastic narrative though its a children’s movie. Bhoothnath Returns appears to be just a job assigned to him from production house and hurried project to target Elections based on the story idea. Now, he’s back to his original self with Dangal.

    • That’s a very rational comment An Jo and cannot agree more esp the 2nd para about Aamir’s instinctive drift to these directors / projects.

I will add and it’s not an effort to take away anything from the movie….and Vinay Shuklas of the world may be right, but sometimes a simple invitation / pass and be considered important enough to be invited to these screenings makes them say things out of the box.

Another issue for me is can films be looked at objectively by these filmy folks esp the insiders / technicians well versed with practical details of film-making? Personally just with a bit of superficial knowledge what goes behind the scenes while making a movie, I have stopped enjoying much of cinema and slowly become a victim of surface fulfillment after watching a movie…..then how are these insiders who know so such about the film industry and how the scenes have been filmed and cut out and what is fake and real can have such definite likes and dislikes. It needs to go into public domain , someone totally unattached which can a very objective take on the movie.

Further is there a quantifiable definition of a good film / bad film/good acting / bad acting/etc.? Or is it 100% opinion? Or is it a mix of the two. My answer – these are all subjective.

I may not have been able to express myself properly hence please take this comment with a pinch of salt if it doesn’t make sense and I will try some other time.

    • Sorry to say..liked the promo but honestly the novelty factor is gone. Too many Sultan images come to my mind watching this. Scooter, Gold medal talk, etc.

There’s no doubt movie is well made but to get that extra, the zing, novelty is lost. I have no doubts about its strong box-office but not sure if it’ll be biggest grosser as folks are saying. I don’t mind to proven wrong as its well intentioned movie and needed for a country like India for female empowerment.

      • I didn’t watch Sultan so lucky me!

This was always going to be Dangal’s biggest challenge coming AFTER Sultan. Comparisons were always going to be made. The intolerance comments would never be an issue on a topic like this.

Aamir has his own winner here. And bets are always placed against him. This is the only blockbuster type film left in the year.

I like the rustic feel & background track. More compelling will be whether it’s a better film than Sultan. If it is it will lose the pre release novelty factor or buzz ( which by your reaction & others expecting it will ) but IF it’s a superior product it will be a stunning achievement if indeed goes onto achieve what everyone is going nuts about who have seen the movie.

If it flops Aamir wasted two years.

        Like

      • Also 3 of 4 of Aamir’s record breakers had reference points. Ghajini was a scene by scene remake obviously vast majority of people who watched Aamir’s one didn’t know or watch Surya’s one.

Dhoom 3 was a brand & always prone to comparisons with D2 to the extent that all of D3’s credit was owed to that film!

P.K post release was compared to OMG & some even here lost novelty on P.K.

None of these things deterred the record breaking spree of those films. Maybe Sultan is such a superior film that Dangal stands no chance. There is always a chance of a rabbit out of a bag with anyone – more so Aamir. I say this because it’s Yashraj who came with Sultan & Aamir just signed Thugs with them so I don’t think he’s worried or anxious or that angry. If anything he’s over confident!
