  1. “I’m very much of a romantic,” director Gauri Shinde tells Rediff.com’s Ronjita Kulkarni at her office in Khar, northwest Mumbai.

She would love to make a hardcore romance movie someday.

But for now, she is basking in the rave reviews her second film Dear Zindagi has brought in.

Starring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan, the film is a beautiful and sensitive take on a young woman’s angst and how her meeting with an unusual shrink help her navigate her way through the turblulent waters of existence.

As my colleague Divya Nair pointed out earlier this week, Dear Zindagi has some wonderful life lessons that we can all learn from.

  2. Kaabil has moved it to release date from 26th Jan to 25th Jan. This is a very curious decision as 25th Jan is a working Wednesday There are 2 ways to look at it…
    A) Either the makers think the movie is pathetic and will have no chance during a clash. So they are releasing 1 day before so atleast for 1 day it can have all the shows and collect 10 to 12 crs extra which will save it as the distribution costs are in control
    b) Or they think the movie is exceptional that they want it to release before the holiday so that by 26th the WOM takes it to another level as it is a holiday.

Not sure what thought process is at work.

    • I just think after MD failure, Roshans would be careful. So I think they have a solid product on hand and it’s “B”.

I said samething before dilwale/bm released that there’s no way bhansali will take this risk (knowing what had happened in sawariya/oso clash) unless he knows he has a solid product on hand.

I think we are underestimating roshans and kaabil.

    • Rakesh Roshan said this earlier: ” I don’t have ego and I’m just superstitious. Once I announced the date, I don’t move it whatever happens. I once moved my date for King Uncle to get a free weekend and the movie didn’t do well. So, I don’t change the date once I decide.”

So, by Roshan’s own logic, Kaabil will flop! 🙂

      Like

      • I mean seriously.. Rakesh Roshan still believes that King Uncle flopped coz of changing date and not that it was a bad movie. Moreover it had Jackie Shroff in title role which hardly made sense as he never had solo blockbusters. Roshan always wanted to make King Uncle with Amitabh and he announced his retirement and then he had to take someone else but Jackie Shroff??

Anyways earning extra 12 crores on Day 1 will help Kaabil immensely. So its a good move!

srk will take huge collection anyway,if rahees turn out to be good then kaabil will struggle and those 12cr will look peanuts..even if kaabil turns out better then rahees i still think srk rahees will beat hritik starrer only on star power, rest the content will take-off from there…at this point kaabil looks loser to me but if rahees was to release along side sultan then both would have hit at the boxoofice…

  4. Bollywood is so messed up at the moment. All these smart moves and counter maneuvers are childish & basics on filmmaking is missing. In that respect one must give the devil its due and Aamir spends sufficient time on content and rest takes care of itself. Infact as per his latest interviews, similar to PK this time too he is not going to a single TV show to promote his movie.

Its high time bollywood lets content do the talking.

  5. SRK should have either released his Raees with Sultan, otherwise simply come on solo and there were so many weekends available since his movie completed long back. He sounds rational and ‘suljha’ in his interviews & TV shows but his movie choices are far from that.

Sometime I feel bad for SRK and what Mumbai’s fame and wealth & KJo brand has brought on to him. All is hunky dory now but not long back there were rumors of trouble in his marriage and as far as I know it had more do with Mrs Khan dalliance. Rampal is the stud man jone model of 90s ! Even took down HR-Suzanne. They may all be clean now , but not long ago this whole Bandra gang headed by SRK used to assemble at Mannat to do pot or whatever that ecstasy pill was being sold in Mumbai. They not only got high and behaved as delusional arse holes but took swinging/ swapping to another level. KJO hint of orgies in his ndtv column is just the tip of iceberg.

Why do I say so? Well Arjun Rampal owns a bar in Mumbai and his links with my friends go all the way back to Hindu College in Delhi… it was all too observable in his bar and not very long ago they were banging each other & wives included and it was all part of party play until things got ugly and those activities stopped and divorces begin to take place. There are parts of Pali Hill in Mumbai which can leave Beverly Hills behind and LA will seem like a village compared to how few upscale mumbaites lead their lives….

Of course there is calm now after everyone parted ways as things got real ugly and it seems they all cannot look into each with a straight eye. That’s part of the explanation of the way of crazy HR and SRK behave these days. I feel sad to see Rampal on TV and his eyes tell a lot of tale….and feel sorry for the zingy Priety Zinta !!

    • I guess you forgot about Raees having a pakistani actress and would not have clean release if it was released anytime prior to now.

At least now the situation is somewhat calmed down. Don’t be surprised if it comes back from now till when raees releases.

There are a million such (BS) stories in Mumbai and India where the links begin with one of my close friends who is relative of the neighbor who is in-turn friends with the brother of the person who was school mate of the person’s brother who knows the driver of the star!!

      • Not that I am interested in proving anything here , Arjun Rampal is not some ‘hauwaa’ and out of the world personality. These are all normal guys from North Campus in DU who graduated to something big.

You had similar issues few months back. In ‘Koffee with Karan’ episode starring Ranveer & Ranbir (below is wrong link though, & just a YouTube promo) one hears from the horse’s mouth about Ranveer removal from BV & KJO’s collusion with Kashyap brothers to get his ‘chammak challo’ Ranbir both BV and Besharam.

Btw big lol at the delusional part where it is being discussed they are the future of bollywood and will take it to International level. Someone should tell them first talk about cementing your own damn place among fans locally than have such pipe dreams. As per the episode both seem like total ‘vellas’ & more famous for flings and banging eager beaver chicks for free……chicks for free say yaad aaya the iconic Dire Straits lyrics – Money for nothin’ and chicks for free…you play the guitar on the MTV.

“What made you do a film like that? .. Bloody hell, you are playing me in the Sanjay Dutt biopic. I don’t know how they cast you.”
Asking Ranbir to be more ‘macho’, he said, “You should be a macho man. Act in macho films. You can’t be doing films like Barfi! You should be holding guns and doing action films. Do you think actors like me, Salman and Ajay would have been around for so many years, if we had not played macho characters on screen?”

  9. Just back from Kahaani 2. To put it clearly, this is a big disappointment! The movie has high expectations coming after Kahaani 1 which was phenomenal in its genre. I’m surprised that Sujoy Ghosh went with this script. On Kahaani 2’s thread I have mentioned that Sujoy Ghosh was planning a movie with Ash – Durga Rani Singh and when she rejected and Vidya wanted to work with him, he changed that movie into Kahaani 2. I think that where the film fails. The movie is fine for its own but trying to make a thriller out a routine movie makes it fall flat. This is no Kahaani.

The movie stars well and the first half is well done(though at places it appears very repetitive and story doesn’t move forward). The whole angle of Durga’s interest in the girl – Mini is very well done. Vidya does display the curiosity very affectively are the best moments of the movie. *** Spoilers*** The whole child abuse parts are done little over with lot of family support and are difficult to watch on screen and will limit the audience. Jugal Hansraj really didn’t need to do this role but he is also out of work, so I can sympathize him. **** The second part is fast paced but also is the worser one. The whole angle with the Arjun Ramphal is also okayish(nothing great). Even the final twist is so lame and we can see it coming all along.

The direction is average and Sujoy mixes up too many plots unevenly in the 2nd half and lot of scenes remind you from Teen, Wazir, etc. The movie is also in the same space as Wazir and Teen and I don’t consider the boxoffice to be any different than them.

Performances wise, this is Vidya Balan’s movie all the way. She is fantastic but also there is little bit of underwhelming feeling that movie doesn’t do justice to her character or potential. Arjun Rampal as the city cop transferred to the small town is very good and does completes justice. Jugal Hansraj is just about alright and leaves no impact.

Overall the trailer is like 100% times better than the movie and infact I wouldn’t call this movie a thriller. Finally, the movie is NOT Recommended and I don’t think this will create any impact at the boxoffice. You can watch it only if you have nothing else to do this weekend!

The situation was a bit under control the first few days but the past few days have been a harrowing experience all over the country. The poor implementation has resulted in loss of goodwill. People can bear inconveniences for a short period of time, but when it becomes a routine they tend to get exasperated. If the situation doesn’t improve in the coming 15-20 days people may become more restive and will certainly question the basic premise of demonetization.

Movie business may be heavily affected in the coming weeks, Dangal will be the most affected film of the coming lot. I feel situation is getting worse from past weeks.

Kahaani 2 had a low first day as it grossed around 4.25 crore nett apprx on day one. The first Kahaani (2012) had grossed a little under 3 crore nett on day one four years back. The collections are less than a film like Akira released a few months back and also lower than other recent Vidya Balan films like Ghanchakker and Hamarai Adhuri Kahaani but that could be to the difference in Emraan Hashmi and Arjun Rampal but being a sequel it should have evened that up. The problem is the first film is not appreciatted as much as its made out to be so in fact that sequel value is practically nothing and Kahaani 2 is a stand alone film. On real value the opening is actually less than Kahaani (2012).

Like the last few weeks with Rock On 2 and Force 2, the fans are just not there because when a film is genuinely appreciated then if a film is made in that sequel / series it has a ready audience which comes when the film is released. The ready audience is why sequel / series are made and at bigger costs because you know a certain amount of people will turn up. But in this industry appreciation is read wrongly so we get films like Rock On 2, Force 2 and now Kahaani 2.

The evenings were a little better as the morning shows suggested a 3.50 crore nett total so it should grow on Saturday but the growth has to be big on Saturday and Sunday to come out with a somewhat decent weekend total. The business of the film is best in places like West Bengal and Mysore. In fact it is out performing in the same areas as Dear Zindagi last week with South and West Bengal being best.

Dear Zindagi is holding up pretty well. I think by Wednesday/Thursday, it may have higher collection then kahaani.

  16. This is the most dangerous time for our planet – Stephen Hawking

We can’t go on ignoring inequality, because we have the means to destroy our world but not to escape it

“…….The concerns underlying these votes about the economic consequences of globalisation and accelerating technological change are absolutely understandable. The automation of factories has already decimated jobs in traditional manufacturing, and the rise of artificial intelligence is likely to extend this job destruction deep into the middle classes, with only the most caring, creative or supervisory roles remaining.

This in turn will accelerate the already widening economic inequality around the world. The internet and the platforms that it makes possible allow very small groups of individuals to make enormous profits while employing very few people. This is inevitable, it is progress, but it is also socially destructive.

We need to put this alongside the financial crash, which brought home to people that a very few individuals working in the financial sector can accrue huge rewards and that the rest of us underwrite that success and pick up the bill when their greed leads us astray. So taken together we are living in a world of widening, not diminishing, financial inequality, in which many people can see not just their standard of living, but their ability to earn a living at all, disappearing. It is no wonder then that they are searching for a new deal, which Trump and Brexit might have appeared to represent.

It is also the case that another unintended consequence of the global spread of the internet and social media is that the stark nature of these inequalities is far more apparent than it has been in the past. For me, the ability to use technology to communicate has been a liberating and positive experience. Without it, I would not have been able to continue working these many years past.

But it also means that the lives of the richest people in the most prosperous parts of the world are agonisingly visible to anyone, however poor, who has access to a phone. And since there are now more people with a telephone than access to clean water in sub-Saharan Africa, this will shortly mean nearly everyone on our increasingly crowded planet will not be able to escape the inequality.

The consequences of this are plain to see: the rural poor flock to cities, to shanty towns, driven by hope. And then often, finding that the Instagram nirvana is not available there, they seek it overseas, joining the ever greater numbers of economic migrants in search of a better life. These migrants in turn place new demands on the infrastructures and economies of the countries in which they arrive, undermining tolerance and further fuelling political populism…..”

“…With not only jobs but entire industries disappearing, we must help people to retrain for a new world and support them financially while they do so. If communities and economies cannot cope with current levels of migration, we must do more to encourage global development, as that is the only way that the migratory millions will be persuaded to seek their future at home.

We can do this, I am an enormous optimist for my species; but it will require the elites, from London to Harvard, from Cambridge to Hollywood, to learn the lessons of the past year. To learn above all a measure of humility.”

Now even if we put a rough estimate of around 2 crore coming in from all the other Hindi films in the running (holdover or re-releases), we are still looking at around 6-7 crore collected at best. 23. Watched KAHAANI 2 today and am stunned at the negativity this one has received. This one’s a superior thriller and am seriously flabbergasted with the reviews. Rangan got this one down very well.

Vidya’s portions are really well done and her back-story is quite interesting. The 2nd half is superb and only toward the climax does it become a little predictable. But still, very entertaining, and HIGHLY recommended.

This is not to be watched with kids. Having Jugal essay that character was a master-stroke. As Vidya’s character says at one point, ‘What makes it difficult is that such people are not outliers but appear very, very normal and that’s why people find it hard to believe.’

Of course, if your yard-stick is THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN or GONE GIRL or 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE or even the first KAHAANI, it falls short. But this is perfectly enjoyable yarn on its own.

The part where I agree with everyone is that there was NO need to make this KAHAANI part 2 since, except tokenism, there really is nothing relatable to KAHAANI. I don’t know whether that’s where people are getting deceived. KAHAANI might be SUJOY’s SHOLAY for all we know. He might end up with Sippy’s SHOLAY KE BAAD SHAAN syndrome. It is difficult to live upto KAHAANI.

Overall, a very well made, gripping film for its genre. Surely recommended.

    SPOILER:

The weak part I felt was the lack of Sujoy focusing on Arjun and Vidya’s marriage. It was really an interesting twist and he just played it out very flat. It needed to be dug into and should have gotten more exposure.

It seems that the few fans the franchise may have had, have also rejected the film. Mumbai circuit has also dropped badly from Monday onward while North India was poor performer from day one. The rest never had any chance anyway. The way the film is going it will close the week at around 23-23.50 crore nett and then find it a struggle to hit 30 crore nett. The first week collections are likely to come in lower than Kahaani (2012). Below are the first five day collections of Kahaani 2.

  26. Q. Will the dubbed Robot 2 be the only Diwali release next year as Golmaal 4 has been pre-poned to October 6th so it means no real Hindi film next Diwali.
    A. Its wait and watch situation to see what happens. Someone still may come as eventually its a dubbed film and after initial it is hard for them in Hindi markets unless film is outstanding. There have been huge mistakes recently with sequels like Rock On2, Kahaani etc being made and this date if true looks as big blunder for Golmaal 4. The film is a hugely successful franchise but makers seem to want to kill it. The franchise is the biggest in Gujarat (bigger than Dhoom) and on Diwali Gujarat gets holidays for 5-6 days but before Diwali, Gujarat is a dead market due to festivities. The Golmaal films have not done huge business in North but Gujarat has been phenomenal and the trend is not going change unless the film is totally different and if Gujarat does not perform it means Golmaal 4 does not perform. Its understandable not to clash but it takes one great mind to come out with 6th October when this date along with 13th October is worst possible date for Golmaal 4. It would be a big surprise if that is actually the new date for Golmaal 4 but anything goes in this industry.

    Q. Why did Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay not really perform like big films should?
    A. One because they were not really as big as made out to be (neither was an event film) and secondly content of both films did not hold universal appeal. The difference as far India market was concerned was music, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil had super hit music which gave it the edge as far as initial goes and it held that initial lead till the end.

    Q. You have said that Kahaani 1 in 2012 was lucky to get away with it at the box office but does this rule also not apply for Dear Zindagi as this film is also a bore which will not really be liked by many in India?
    A. Not only does it apply for Dear Zindagi but many others as they are trying to win with a limited audience. Dear Zindagi eventually also stops at the same level as others because the presence of a Shahrukh Khan and Alia Bhatt give it some expectations from that target audience while likes of Kahaani, Queen, Neerja and Pink have no expectations. Its the same limited crowd and same limited likability.

    Q. Return Of Xander cage is being heavily promoted so can it be a big grosser in India?
    A. See its B grade Hollywood actioner and its doubtful if it can perform in the West. In India its been seen like Fast & Furious by the trade so it gets talked up. But its probably just boost talk which is indulged in the trade people in the media for every other release as the product does not look as good as Fast & Furious and you would probably bet on the audience has seen production values are less than Fast & Furious and these films also generally carry a weak plot.

But, at the end Alia bagged two awards and Sonam got none! Reason? Alia Bhatt’s mentor, Karan Johar’s influence.

An insider has been quoted by a popular daily, “Maybe Sonam lost out the award because they were many people in the jury connected to Karan Johar’s (also the host for the evening) Dharma Productions and they voted for KJo’s protg.

Also, the award show is being aired on the channel that has landed the rights to show Alia’s next film. Alia deserved the award for DZ for sure, the second one is debatable.” (sic)

What do you think about this? Was it justified to give Alia Bhatt both the awards? Or even Sonam Kapoor deserved at least one for her performance?

  29. Two actresses and two awards. Few days back, there were reports in the media that Sonam Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are vouching for the same award i.e. “Best Actress”. While Sonam felt that she is more deserving for her role in ‘Neerja’, Alia felt that she should get for ‘Udta Punjab’ and ‘Dear Zindagi’.

But, at the end Alia bagged two awards and Sonam got none! Reason? Alia Bhatt’s mentor, Karan Johar’s influence.
