Love that finally Karan/Aditya Chopra are getting influenced by Imtiaz Ali. For me the single most contribution in the vocabulary by Imtiaz Ali will be the term ” MANGO People” he coined for Love Aaj Kal for ‘Aam Junta/Common folks’. The word has literally created new word in vocabulary and been used everywhere from that time. It is nothing short of astonishing to my mind and it sounds so good to call common folks as Mango ppl. Kudos for that!!
I feel bad for Jackie Shroff. He had given screen test and was very hopeful to bag the role but finally he was not selected. If you ask me, I would prefer Jackie doing Sunil Dutt’s role than Akshaye Khanna especially when Sanjay was in jail (’93) and then Sunil Dutt went all around to get him released. It would be little awkward to see Akshaye Khanna playing ‘old’ dad to Ranbir Kapoor when not much age difference between them. Akshaye is 41 whereas Ranbir is 34.
Akshaye is always good as actor and pleasure to watch on screen. Unfortunately he got in late with his hair weaving or simply did not bother to the vanity part associated with a bollywood actor which is a must esp good growth is a must….
Salman, Ranbir, Varun, Kapil Sharma got in timely before audience could grasp.Salman late nineties balding is very visible so is Kapil Sharma when u see his YouTube videos of Laughter Challenge. Ranbir was balding very early and quick but due to closeness to Salman / Katrina got in timely but still his early films show signs. Still there is bandana whenever he is playing soccer.
Aamir and Anil Kapoor scenario is not clear – may be hair genetics have assisted.
There are rumors of srk and bachchan wearing wigs but god knows what’s the truth. Sachin hair weaving tales are pretty much public so is Sehwag.
There are couple of 2nd tier celebrities with hair weaving and implants but audience does not even bother to know.
Bottom-line – Indian men are prone to balding and Rajinikanth is one of the only celebrities with some sort of openness to this.

Aditya Chopra’s film reminds us that a well-shot Bollywood romantic film can be so entertaining even when it does not offer anything new, says Aseem Chhabra.
Vani Kapoor and Ranveer Singh dance with abandon in BefikreAditya Chopra’s fourth feature as a director — Befikre is a hot and sexy film.
Despite its thin plot (what plot, a journalist friend asked me after the film’s premiere at the Dubai International Film Festival), the film holds its attention with the good looking stars, their energy, songs, dances and many lovely day and night scenes in Paris.
Chopra’s film reminds us that a well-shot Bollywood romantic film can be so entertaining even when it does not necessarily offer anything new.
Befikre opens with a string of kisses. As the credits appear on the screen, we see several characters on the streets of Paris — young, old and of different colours, kissing as Labon Ka Karobaar plays in the background.
It is a sweet, romantic and very happy look at Paris.
One loses the count of the kisses, just as it is impossible to say how many times the film’s leads — Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor — lock lips through the film.
Singh and Kapoor kiss with full abandonment in Befikre, again and again, and it is sexy, fun and absolutely okay.
The film is a signal of how far India, Bollywood and the censor board (despite the strange conservative mood the current board often reflects) have come from the days when Hindi films would show flowers and bees to suggest romance, or physical contact between the male and female leads.
But the sexy tones of the film do not stop there. The first scene has Singh’s Dharam breaking up with his live-in girl friend. And as he angrily throws her out of his apartment Dharam struts around only in a short black boxer brief.
Also I do not know how much the censor board has cut from the film (we clearly saw the uncensored version of the film in Dubai), but Singh will go down in history of Indian cinema as the first actor to pose completely naked from the back. It is a very brief shot, but I doubt if Chopra used a body double.
Kapoor’s fans should not be disappointed. The actress shows enough skin through the film, often taking her top off and showing her bra. She especially looks positively hot shaking her hips and dancing to the song Nashe Si Chad Gayi.
And she and Singh are equally attractive dancing on the streets of Paris to the song Ude Dil Befikre.
Kapoor and Singh are natural dancers and even in many of the film’s choreographed sequences they move their bodies with a lot of ease. And their tango-ish dance scene towards the end of the film simmers with a lot of sexual tension.
With all of this sexually charged energy it hardly matters that Befikre attempts to follow a story line.
Dharam is a young man from Karol Bagh in Delhi and he retains a tad bit of Bittoo Sharma’s Janakpuri accent from Band Baaja Baaraat. Dharam arrives in Paris to perform at a stand-up comedy club called Delhi Belly.
Singh is often very funny in the film, and utterly likeable and charming, but he is flat as a stand-up comic. Perhaps Dharam should have been given a different career path in Paris.
In Paris Dharam meets Shrya (played with a lot of confidence by Kapoor) — an Indian woman, born and raised in France. They dance, drink, sing songs, fall in love, move in together, fall out of love and then much like Band Baaja Baaraat’s Bittoo Sharma and Shruti Kakkar decide to become friends.
In fact, Befikre carries quite a bit of BBB hangover, with occasional nod to Chopra’s breakthrough film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
But in Befikre Dharam and Shyra take it one level further when in a state of confusion and anger they get engaged and even close to marrying other partners.
Of course, Befikre is a Hindi film and no surprise how it will end.
There are some messy moments in the film, especially the weird unruly slapstick scene towards the end in a church.
And that is when one senses that Chopra is not in full control of the plot. He knows how the film will end, but the path to that seems forced and convoluted.
Still much of Befikre is loaded with a carefree spirit. It is joyful and it will make you smile.

why SRK is dictating when Kaabil should be released ? RR said it is upto Exhibitors and producers to decide whether Kaabil should be a regular day release or evening release on 25th jan.
Srk has degraded himself to very low level by each passing year, jsut recently he walking out of star screen awards and now this shows his desperation for success, but all on unethical grounds? well, i always knew, but people still defend him.
No wonder, he is most hated star these days.
Well, he was lying all along, Indicine exposed that.
During, this press confrence he announced 25th jan while at the same time, trailer uploaded at Instagram showed 26th jan.
Hardly surprising. I think overall, SRK has a reputation of being a bit machiavellic. Got into games Aamir Khan decided not to get into during the making of Darr.
Bullied OUATIMD into releasing a week later and then reneged a promise by giving up 400 less screens than what had been previously agreed upon. This was reported by the producers of OUATIM and when they cried foul, it is said that SRK never responded to Jeetendra’s attempts to get in touch. Some multiplex owners at that time also confirmed in the media that they had been pressurised by SRK and producers of CE not to give up screens.
But at the same time, SRK has to look at the best interest of his movie here. There is lots of money riding on it and he badly needs a hit as well. Of course, it is understandable that these should take priority. But, as I said earlier, neither is SRK the epitome of honesty, nor are the Roshans that naive.
I remember OUTIMD was sabotaged by screen disputes and srk’s pr. Only way it could have overcome this was if it was way superior product like BM. CE and outimd were both equally bad products. I commend how Devgn managed SOS release vs jthj and it was true success. BM doing 40 cr more than Dilwale in the end was more due to significantly better product.
Here both trailer looks bad and i dont have much hope from any of the two.

But yeah SRK really needs a big one. And in some sense the great reception for the trailer plus the fact that it looks so masala increases the stakes. Because now he can’t get away with just a decent success/gross. On the other hand he could get a very significant one here if the film is anything like the trailer.
These blink and miss roles by Deepika and now Priyanka make Aishwarya’s hollywood career looks far better right now, and she didnt do skin show. Pink panther2 and Last legion had pretty good screen time , actually she was the one and only antagonist in the former and bride & prejudice had her in lead role if it can be called hollywood film by virtue of crew and production involved.
Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor starrer Befikre has received good response at the box office. This rom-com opened with 40-45% occupancy in the morning shows.
Dear Zindagi has crossed the 60 crore* mark in two weeks. The film had fair collections in the second week and while it is still playing in select theaters in the third week, the makers would be looking at the lifetime collections of 65-67 crore for the Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan starrer.
yes it’s ending up in Pink range despite opening much higher. Now of course BOI ‘prepared’ for this from day one saying that despite the opening these sorts of films had a limited audience. This way they could cheer SRK for the opening while not attributing any of the trending to him! But of course this begs the question why the film could do 15 crores or more like Piku and why it had to stop at Pink level. Or why it couldn’t do something in between. Leaving this aside the original explanation is bull anyway. If Piku had released today and opened like DZ it would have done a 100. But now some genius will turn up and say ‘hey it was liked a lot more’. Yeah.. Aamir too pulls these dirty tricks quite regularly. Deliberately working in films that more people like. Or some other Einstein will say ‘for it’s budget it’s a global hit’. Sure. But it could have been this even if it had made a lot less! Seriously though I wouldn’t call DZ a bad performance but it’s clear that after the weekend it held up well but at a somewhat low level and after week 1 at an even lower one. Specially with an initial this sort of film can easily fall in the 80-100 range. And of course this is why BOI didn’t talk about the collections much during the week and focused on the overall international gross. And now they’re running this fiction once more:
yes of course it’s always about the film in the end.. but the star can’t get away by just relying on an initial. By this logic no flop should ever matter. Because the star’s judgment is also part of the deal. I don’t know when the SRK fans will stop making excuses! Similarly you can keep taking digs at Bachchan but SRK would give an arm and a leg to be able to do stuff like Pink or Piku or even some of the other promising stuff Bachchan has done recently (at his age!) that hasn’t done as well. How do we know this? Well when you do a actress-centric DZ more or less for free it’s clear you want some sort of success somehow!
Now it’s of course true that Bachchan damaged his initial a long time back with overexposure and bad decisions and so on. However notice what happens with films like Pink or Piku. Once people are convinced the film is good and he has a strong performance (in all of these smaller films his performance is very much part of the film’s narrative and ultimate box office success.. Black, Paa, Piku, Pink) the films trend very well. In fact these films rely so much on Bachchan being absolutely central that they just wouldn’t work as well without him (they would do well enough but not at that level.. other smaller films can do as well but not these particular ones because they’re structured a certain way). The star’s credibility then is very important. This is what we see for Aamir as well. Why didn’t Bajrangi do as much or more than PK despite everyone loving it? Now of course the fans always make excuses till the cows come home but Aamir in Bajrangi would have crossed PK. A lot go Aamir’s films aren’t in the Ghajini mould so they open very well but not in a record-setting way. But again his credibility is such that people always show up and specially with strong WOM the trending still outpaces that for any other star in similar circumstances. How do we know? Look at Salman’s or SRK’s ‘hits’.
So when one is anxious about one’s favorite star (which anxiety one always reveals in a variety of ways) one can keep making excuses (or even use a religious excuse for a forthcoming SRK film potentially not doing well!), one can keep attacking other stars, all of this doesn’t change anything. As a larger matter (and I’m repeating something here.. not that it makes a difference) before questioning the credibility of others one must make sure one’s own credibility isn’t in tatters. The day SRK fans have an honest conversation about him they can start questioning others. By the way in all these years I have yet to come across a true blue SRK fan, i.e. one truly devoted to him who has this honesty. This happens with other kinds of fans to but not quite to the same degree. Now some SRK fans might be more pleasant about things, some might not but the arguments are nonetheless are not honestly framed. In the last 12 years SRK has three clean hits in OSO, RDBNJ, CE. Then of course there’s CDI in a smaller genre. Countless films have either failed, underperformed or in some cases not even got enough of an initial. And across genres. Now one can keep saying ‘hey it’s a good initial’. Meanwhile Aamir and Salman are miles ahead. Two different models but the result is the same. And you can keep saying ‘top 3’ or whatever!

you’ve answered your own question.. there isn’t a ‘top 3’. That’s the whole point! A top 3 means relative parity and there isn’t this among the top 3 (of course I note you cannot count more successes!). There’s a top 2 and then there are the others. One can decide on those positions but they’re certainly not threatening Aamir or Salman in any sense. As for your other question the answer to this, whatever it is, will not elevate SRK to the top 2! That’s the only answer that should matter to you! But otherwise I’ve never been in denial of reality. Or put differently I’m not a SRK fan!
actually have.. but SRK fans tend to become challenged in matters of Eng also.. you have never ever in all the time you’ve been here answered anything honestly on SRK. So the day you fix that problem you can question others on their integrity. I’ve said all I needed to on this topic today. That’s an incorrect assessment. Each movie has its own destiny and sometime the star / actors fit the narrative to the T. In fact BB would fall flat with Aamir starring in it and would be a dull affair…thats why aamir gave it a pass. For instance whatever be the level of stardom of either a Salman or an Aamir, they simply cannot exchange their roles in Sultan and Dangal and get similar results. Both movies would have huge credibility issues. In the Indian context the off-screen persona to connect with a subject is a must and is a very important one……this is one of the reason a lot other actors are finding it difficult to get results at the box office. Akshay after a number of years has finally found his groove and makes sense finally has started to make sense when he says – main jo bolta hu woh karta hu, aur jo me nahi bolta wo main definitely karta hoon. ”
SRK will continue to fail for number of years until he finds the correct zoning and performs honestly by getting into the skin of the character he plays…..the audience of 2016 is much different than 90s or even a early 2000s. More than a Dabangg of 2009 , I feel Salman came clean with Wanted in 2008. That movie today would be a huge grosser but never did much at that time due to credibility issues Salman was facing.
In my estimation DZ is an underperformer whatever may be the genre talks.That movie should have done at least a 100 cr today. Raees gives him a chance to crossover but audience trust is vaning fast unless he surprises with authenticity which going by the promo does not seem to be. All this clash talk is purposeful and part of his defense mechanism and a diversion in case of failure again.
you said at the time BB would cross PK. I guess ‘destiny’ is a good fallback excuse… well no Salman film seems to have that destiny so far.. and in each case you predicted all sorts of things. There’s livewire before release and after!
By the way I do agree that Aamir couldn’t do Sultan. But Bajrangi is a pretty regular narrative-drive film. It’s hardly a subject other stars couldn’t do. I’d actually argue it would be an even better narrative film with Aamir. It certainly could have had a better first half. But the idea that the guy who did Ghajini and broke all kinds of records couldn’t do Bajrangi is more than a little bizarre. This gets back to my comment to Z. It’s one thing to be even a huge fan and quite another to be utterly divorced from reality.
Funny you keep mentioning that, felt same way about you for past 15 years when you were trying to put abhi at level above other with excuses like “prestige films” etc… but good to see that you don’t even bring his name up anymore like he doesn’t exist.
But anyway, let’s see what aamir does without hirani. All the scenarios are in the favor, Christmas/new year release, no competition, free 3 week run, etc…

But again note how you simply cannot defend SRK on the facts. You either have to go to fantasy constructs or attack the Bachchans. Aamir has done a lot since Lagaan with or without Hirani. But in waiting for the big SRK one you might not have noticed..
Anyone could take up Bajrangi Bhaijaan and in part get the required success. It’s the blockbuster results I am referring here. Unlike the cold hearted folks on this blog, there is a ‘Being Human’ Salman off-screen which a lot of massy /lower rung in India connect and Bajrangi Bhaijaan is an extension of that persona. Have a look at the viral video of that girl crying when the BB got over. Aamir on the contrary has to spend time, work at it to cultivate the ‘make believe’ which comes natural to Salman.
Aamir let go the script as the character of Bajrangi was alien to him unlike Salman who took to it like a fish takes to water and even produced it since at human level whatever he is doing in life connected with the theme.

as much as I liked DZ, I agree it should’ve earned more. I guess many people didnt turn up for it, and a majority found it to be just okay. Earning 65 crores despite opening at 10 crores doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been accepted.

It didnt open at 10 cr, producers figure is 8.75 cr, so is boi. Boi has given producers’number for each day til today in rare scenario.
Having said that, Befikre seems to be the worst of Aditya Chopra going by some of the reactions in social media. cant believe aditya chopra takes a hiatus of 8 years to come up with something like this. RNBDJ was a disappointing effort for many but was still a watchable film on the whole. befikre looks like an outright disaster going by the reviews and reactions. suppose he is much better off as a producer.
and in comparision, I find Johars efforts as a director more sincere than Aditya Chopra in recent times. the former is more ambitious in his vision, and you can tell he tries (the efforts show on the screen), even though he doesn’t necessarily pull off his ideas altogether successfully
When comparing Pink with DZ, we should consider one more scenario.. of cashlessness. Ofcourse the next argument will be that multiplex ppl use card swipe to pay, but when you have to swipe cards for everything and cash in hand is hard to come by, even some multiplex audience may give up movies and such as luxuries. Don’t altogether dismiss it, because what may have happened if this factor was nor there, you definitely don’t know.
Lets not compare Pink and DZ…although I haven’t watched DZ but it doesn’t have the same acceptance like Pink…among my friend circles only few liked DZ while couple of them mentioned they almost slept and found it slow and preachy…cashlessness and all are just excuses not only for DZ but for other movies as well (it affects but not that much specially metro centric movies)
Superstar Aamir Khan, whose all set to portray Mahavir Singh Phogat in “Dangal” says the purpose to make the film is not to promote himself or the sports personality, but to make a “good film”.
Asked his opinion on Bollywood personalities overshadowing sportsmen, on whom movies are based on, Aamir told reporters here: “My purpose to make this film was not to promote myself or a sports personality. When I am making a film it’s because I love the story. It is because I am creatively excited about the film.
“And that is something I want to share it with audience.”

Superstar Aamir Khan, who is often called as “Mr. Perfectionist”, says he doesn’t believe in the title and says instead he should be called “Mr. Passionate” instead.
Asked if his title gives him any pressure, Aamir told reporters in a group interview here: “It puts no pressure on me because I don’t believe in the title only. So the title is an inaccurate title. So, it puts not pressure on me.”
Aamir, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film, “Dangal” directed by Nitesh Tiwari, says the correct title for him would be “Mr. Passionate” because “that is what I am”.
The 51-year-old star says perfection according to him doesn’t exist in a creative field, where people have a myriad of ideas and opinions.
“Perfection according to me doesn’t exist. There is not such thing as perfection and certainly not in the creative field… I am a passionate person,” he said.
Appreciation for DZ was missing from day one. Reviews were mixed too otherwise it should have crossed 100 -110 cr. Piku with 60% less opening did 80 cr, pink with 70% less opening did same final total, neerja with 60% less opening did 73 cr.
And trust me there was always good enough audience for DZ , it was more fun film than any of above and srk’s presence gives this much wider audience.
One thing is true either srk’s audience has diminished significantly or Film does has appreciation.

using above number of votes you can calculate producers total for these movies. ADHM has most votes and most watched movie in multiplexes. And shivaay number of votes are very close.
well it certainly got a good initial for this sort of film and one can’t deny SRK’s contribution on this score. But yes it wasn’t liked enough or it would have remained stable at a much higher level. And longer.
Basically that’s same as what BOI was saying.. And compared to ADHM and Shavaay, DZ had less screens to start with..
I dont know how much of a wide release Neerja or Pink had.
Befikre, looks like an experiment one too far. I’m sure the film will have plenty of filmi links to Aditya’s past films much like Kjo can’t remove his past from his films. Probably the only highlights for fans of this kind of cinema.
Back from Befikre!! Well, I never thought I will say this but Aditya Chopra’s experiment is a major misfire. I wouldn’t even call it an experiment but as Aditya Chopra calls it experiment as he removed the strengths in all his 3 successful movies and tried to make this movie. It is not emotional, it is not deep, it does not have strong dialogues( as it is casual talk always) and not even an great story or concept. Then why do one even attempt such a movie? All the above stuff ended being the flaws of the movie.
The movie starts well and then slowly the cracks appear when the jokes keeps falling flat as there is serious chemistry lacking between the leads. The movie still manages to keep itself float till the 1st half but once 2nd half starts it goes down the hill. The movie which was supposed to never get serious tries to do the same and half heartedly(he’s thinking not to make it heavy) but that perfect balance of feel good romantic comedy is never achieved. The pace keeps fluctuation from forced comic scenes to forced emotional drama and finally a bizarre climax which doesn’t go well with the movie.
So, is the worst movie made? Of Course not. The movie would have been fine and even to an extent acceptable if it was made my some debutant director but with the power comes the responsibility. So, with Aditya Chopra’s name attached to it, it is huge misfire and unacceptable movie. There was no need to ever make this movie(even as the holiday movie as Karan did on SOTY, which I prefer vastly to this one). The movie further falls flat coz of Ranveer singh’s acting. I know everyone loved him as Bajirao but when he has to play almost himself, it looked so fake and laborious. All the natural scenes(which Ranbir or even Saif so effortlessly in rom-coms), Ranveer couldn’t do it. To put it clear, he plays a stand up comedian and he keeps saying so many jokes and there is hardly 1-2 which brings smile/laugh for the audience. It is so out of sync. Vaani Kapoor on the other hand has actually performed better and danced great but she was never a great actress and that eventually matters(and she looked bad with horrible hair colors). At least her hardwork is displayed wheareas Ranveer appears lost at many scenes in the movie. I also feel Ranveer will get some fake praises but seriously this is lost performance compared to Vaani. Maybe Bajirao’s success went to his head or he seriously lack in giving natural performances.
Regarding music, 2 songs are fine (Nashe mein and Title track) and rest are not even worth mentioning. The locations are great in 1st half. The supporting actors are hardly there and majority of them are debutants.
Overall, Aditya Chopra has turned out a major misfire and I don’t think it will do well at the boxoffice. Some youngsters might like it to an extent(like I said, if you treat this movie removing the director’s name, you might give it a pass for single watch with flaws) but it will not connect majorly with the audience. I even prefer Band Baaja Baraat as a movie and Ranveer’s performance over this one.
So, I would NOT recommend this movie. Major loss for Ranveer, Aditya and unfortunately might end Vaani’s career.
Band Bajaa Baraat was a very good movie. I dont know why Aditya Chopra he needs to get rid off DDLJ’s legacy. I don’t think there are too many people that really expect something earth shattering from him. The best thing for him would be to make movies more frequently and try different genres (if thats what he wants)
Thanks. I may watch this on screen but I expected this film to turn out like this. Ranveer goes overboard trying, it looks so fake..whether its on screen or off..
Personally, I expected this. And most probably Aditya needed this. He’s not a fine director but he knows his craft, some confrontational scenes in Mohabbatein are fantastic. The premise of Mohabbatein is ambitious and RNBDJ could have been a fantastic idea if he engaged the audience into creating an older SRK that was the true one over the Rahul caricature. That movie could have really done some serious storytelling by roping in his first movie. No one can deny there is talent. But my gut feel on Aditya is he’s better producing or like Kjo they need a big catastrophe to rethink what kind of films they want to make.
Looks like a misfire for sure.

Problem with KJo, Imtiaz and Adi is that they want to experiment inside romantic genre and yet want to be called great.
They all follow Yash Chopra style of filmmaking without realising the genres Yash made in his career- Deewar, Shakti, Mashaal, Silsila, Chandni, Lamhe, Dil to Pagal Hai, Darr, Kala Paththar.
The students of Yash Chopra has lost their way miserably.
I don’t know why anyone would ever think Aditya Chopra was/is actually a great director?? He is a decent director and if you went in with that mindset, this was actually a decent watch. Certainly not a ‘misfire’ IMO. I don’t think we will ever get the Aditya Chopra of DDLJ again…but Befikre was a lot better than his other two crappy films (which is still not saying much).
SRK has all grey hair and grey beard, so is aamir. But, these days Actors dye their beard too and it shines too much and looks odd, it can be noticed in Raees trailer too.
Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor starrer Befikre hit the screens yesterday and showed a decent occupancy throughout the day. According to early estimates, the film has taken a good start. This is because his Befikre is a colossally stupid film, a bad comedy with some skin and spit-swapping thrown onto it in a desperate attempt to attract attention.
Despite the montage where lovers — old, blond, bewigged — smooch over the opening credits, what follows is not a youthful or fresh or interesting film.
Like a big budget wolf dressed like a particularly skimpy sheep, this film recycles ideas we’ve seen done to death by Chopra’s own production house: The underdressed carefree tourism of Neal And Nikki melts into the inevitability of Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, itself built upon the second half of Chopra’s DDLJ, with the Dance Of Envy from Dil Toh Pagal Hai thrown in for good measure.
Everything about this movie reminds me of Sooraj Barjayta’s Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. From taking a supposed upcoming superstar to replace the old superstar they’ve worked with in all their past movies, to *trying* (and failing) to be completely different and risqué, to getting a flop film. Ofc no surprise that Aditya Chopra will go back to SRK now and deliver a 150/200 crore hit, something like Prem Ratan and this will keep their companies in the green but they’ll never make another DDLJ or HAHK again…

Time and again we have had instances of people trolling actresses and women on social media. Body shamming girls online has become a trend. So to put an end to all this, actress Sonam Kapoor tried her bit and shared her motivational story. It’s been creating a rage on the internet for now and we also feel that, not only girls even boys should read it once!
Here’s what she shared:
Like every girl, I spent many nights through adolescence leaning into my bedroom mirror, wondering why my body looked nothing like it should.
Why does my belly crease? Why do my arms jiggle? Why am I not fair? Why are there dark patches under my eyes? Why am I taller than boys my age? Do stretch marks ever go away? Will this cellulite stay forever?
“Itni lambi, itni kaali,” a relative casually let slip at a family gathering. “Shaadi kaun karega?” It confirmed that my greatest insecurities were well-founded.
When I was 13, my family took a trip to Goa. Aishwarya Rai was there vacationing with a friend, and we spent an evening with her. I still remember that in blue jeans and a white tank top, she looked like royalty. It baffled me.
I didn’t know much at 15. But I knew I could never look like a Bollywood actress.
Two years and some surprising life decisions later, Sanjay Leela Bhansali cast me in Saawariya.
Despite being on the cusp of actually being a movie star, I didn’t believe I looked the part. I constantly worried that, if asked to dance in a backless choli, rolls of back fat would give me away as an imposter to the industry. Nobody lines up to buy tickets to see cellulite.
So I embarked on a series of unhealthy behaviours. I dieted serially; sometimes South Beach, other times Atkins. Once, in desperation, I tried a diet that had me eating pineapples all day.
I pushed myself too hard at spin classes, did power yoga for hours at a stretch, and developed an unhealthy relationship with food. Some weeks, desperate to drop a couple of kilos, I would simply not eat.
At 18, I went on a date that I thought went well. Later, the boy told our mutual friend that “Sonam is too big”. I didn’t eat for a day.
(Now, thanks to those dumbass teenage decisions, I’m stuck with acidity for life.)
I had assumed that the self-loathing goes away once you’re on billboards at Juhu Beach. I was so wrong. Far from accepting my body once I was making a living as an actress, I was shown new reasons to hate it.
Articles surfaced online, photos zoomed into my arms and thighs, red circles drawn around the slightest hints of a blemish.
When I had a couple of movies out, Shobhaa De wrote a blog post saying that Sonam Kapoor “just doesn’t cut it in the sex appeal stakes”.
People started calling me flat-chested. I’d never been insecure about my C-cup but I got defensive about it on Koffee With Karan.
Eventually, I didn’t even need the tabloids to point out my flaws – I could look at myself on camera monitors and predict what would be criticised. I still remember the frames I hated immediately: the tight silver dress from Bewakoofiyaan, the song with Neil Nitin in Players, the swimsuit and shorts in Aisha, to name a few.
Of course, scrutiny of female bodies isn’t new, or even restricted to celebrities. I mean, raise your hand if you’ve ever been called “healthy” by a relative, or been given unsolicited advice by a friend about how to lose weight.
Raise your hand if you were told to stay out of the sun so you don’t get dark.
Raise your hand if you started hating your body after somebody else told you how.
Here’s what’s gone wrong:
We’ve been taught that women need to be flawless even when our flawlessness is wildly implausible, sexy even when our sexiness is a break from plot. We’re sprinting through Jurassic Park in heels, fighting supervillains in strapless corsets, being stranded on deserted islands for days without a hint of stubble. Real female bodies are so taboo that hair-removal-cream ads show hairless legs even before the cream is applied.
The rules of beauty are strict and it’s almost impossible to win. Anushka Sharma has been skinny-shamed, Sonakshi Sinha has been fat-shamed, Katrina Kaif has been fit-shamed. These are women who are and always have been staggeringly beautiful.
But where there’s a broken system, there’s a solution. The problem is in mainstream culture’s rigid definitions of female beauty. The solution, for me, has been in the women I know.
It’s been a decade since I entered the film industry with my awful self-esteem in tow and, thanks to the female support I’ve had throughout, that self-esteem is in a healthier place now.
I’m lucky to have had my friend and makeup artist Namrata Soni, who sees my face from hyperclose quarters and goes out of her way to make me feel good about it. When I whine about my laugh lines or dark circles, she tells me they’re natural and that’s why they’re beautiful. I have a forcep scar on the right side of my face and my lip lifts up on one side (you notice these things when you’re in front of a camera a lot). When I float the idea of getting them fixed, Namrata reminds me that they make me me.
Instead of letting me interpret my body’s quirks and changes as “flaws”, Namrata helps me celebrate them as unique markers of unique beauty.
I’m lucky to have had my sister and sometimes stylist Rhea, the hottest girl I know. When I’m beating myself up for being too lanky, for not having her curves, she shuts me down and insists I look good in everything she makes me wear. When I start complaining that I don’t look like I did when I was 21, Rhea tells me I look better now.
All the women who’ve championed me have taught me that kind, genuine support can change your friend’s or sister’s or colleague’s life.
(Think of how much better your day is when it starts with a compliment. Think of how easy it is to give that to someone else. Do it every chance you get.)
Today, at 31, I like my body because it’s healthy. I’m done celebrating thinness or flawlessness. I’ve embraced a fit lifestyle, clean eating, and the pursuit of waking up every morning feeling energised. There’s beauty in good health.
The ball is in the media’s court to celebrate fit bodies rather than thin ones, and to know the difference.
I know now that there’s nothing wrong with stretch marks, cellulite, or scars. They’re markers of our growth. There’s beauty in their realness.
And, for the record, I’m not writing this to discourage the pursuit of glamour. Anyone who knows me knows I love feeling pretty – fashion can lend power, makeup can become motivation, a fun accessory can become your source of confidence for the day.
But pursue prettiness for yourself, by your own definitions – not to meet culturally preset notions of “flawless”.
Because flawlessness is a dangerous, high-budget myth, and it’s time we shattered it.
So, for every teen girl leaning into her bedroom mirror, wondering why she doesn’t look like a celebrity: Please know that nobody wakes up like this. Not me. Not any other actress. (Not even Beyonc. I swear.)
Here’s the real deal: Before each public appearance, I spend 90 minutes in a makeup chair. Three to six people work on my hair and makeup, while a professional touches up my nails. My eyebrows are tweezed and threaded every week. There’s concealer on parts of my body that I could never have predicted would need concealing.
I’m up at 6am every day and at the gym by 7:30. I exercise for 90 minutes and, some evenings, again before bed. It’s someone’s full-time job to decide what I can and cannot eat. There are more ingredients in my face packs than in my food. There’s a team dedicated to finding me flattering outfits.
After all that, if I’m still not “flawless” enough, there are generous servings of Photoshop.
I’ve said it before, and I will keep saying it: It takes an army, a lot of money, and an incredible amount of time to make a female celebrity look the way she does when you see her. It isn’t realistic, and it isn’t anything to aspire to.
Aspire, instead, to giving your body as much sleep as it needs. Aspire to finding a form of exercise that’s actually fun for you to do. Aspire to knowing your body and how to live well in it.
Aspire to confidence. Aspire to feeling pretty and carefree and happy, without needing to look any specific way.
And the next time you see a 13-year-old girl gazing wistfully at a blemish-free, shiny-haired Bollywood actress on a magazine cover, bust the myth of flawlessness for her.
Tell her how beautiful she is. Praise her smile or her laugh or her mind or her gait.
Don’t let her grow up believing that she’s flawed, or that there’s anything she’s lacking for looking different from a woman on a billboard. Don’t let her hold herself to a standard that’s too high, even for the women on the billboards.
Tell her I definitely didn’t wake up like this. She won’t either. And that’s totally, completely fine.
Posted it when it appeared in buzzfeed. I think you first create issue (who hasn’t in this world..some kind of insecurity) and solve it because you have wherewithal. Most of the heroines like Kajol, Deepika look dusky when they arrived and now look quite fair. Most of them compete to get roles with one of the bigger male stars; Shorn of talent, most of them rely on looking good. There is no differentiator (You can replace one heroine with other and movie will remain same). Should the heroines blame system, audience or themselves ? I think the blame should be shared. I cannot correct other sbut, I can always correct self. In this case, people around Sonam didn’t instill enough confidence at young age to be self. It is always easy to blame others.
It is not about blaming. It is about how it happens. Firsthand exoerience from a film actress. Sushmita Sen or Aishwarya or Deepika would not have come out with this kind of exposing beauty industry. What goes behind those starry looks? How many people are behind it? How expensive all this?
And that brings to mind the male stars who made 6 packs as the norm with or without steroids.
Jayant Yadav is on fire. Kohli himself is stunned. It’s a fantastic match. India really need to win this one and seal the series. And what can be a greater joy than the fact that this is in Wankhede…

Befikre grossed around 11 crore nett on Saturday which was limited growth from Friday. The film really needed to do 1 crore nett more to put it in a good position which would have enabled to easily cross 35 crore nett. A film like Dil Dhadakne Do which had a similar audience target of urban youth and also featured Ranveer Singh with ensemble cast had a first day of 9.69 crore nett and then went to 11.55 crore nett on Saturday which was growth of a little under 20% while Befikre the growth is under 10%. The two day business is in the same range as that film but Dil Dhadakne Do also put on 20% on Sunday even though the film was not appreciated. On fair value the collections are higher than Dil Dhadakne Do here as the release was weaker due to demonetization and it would have lost some business but the trend is weaker than that film. The two day business of the film is as follows.
The film has managed to grow in practically all the circuits but they is that the main multiplex areas like Mumbai, Delhi / UP and East Punjab did not perform the way they should have on Saturday. If these areas had jumped 20% on Saturday it would be a different picture for the film.
Unless the Sunday growth comes in more than expected it will be average weekend collections on a not so good trend and the latter will make it tough on the weekdays.
I dont think it is doing worse than DDD, if second day is 50 lacs lower, first was one cr higher.
And where are those excuses, prevalant in times of DZ, of demonetization etc, this film is more likely to affected of cash crunch than DZ which hardly had any impact due to being pure high-end metro multiplex film.
It is an expensive movie at around a reported 70cr (production plus P&A). It is, for instance, more expensive than most Akshay Kumar movies. Rustom for e.g. had a total budget of 50cr.
So, if it does barely 65cr, it is a flop outright in the domestic market.
The trend is worse than DDD’s and that was a movie that didn’t really receive appreciation. Befikre will probably gross around 65cr lifetime. Which means similar to DZ (another under-performer when you look at the cast).
Had friends going for it last evening and on friday night and from what they were all saying afterwards, the critics and reviews seem really kind.
Back from the movie. I liked it.
Befikre is a fun film, needs a broad minded perspective, so obviously not meant for the hinterlands, or even Chandhni Chowk for that matter. Its really aimed for the NRI audiences, and some select South Bombay types. So am not surprised that the all-India numbers will be low.
Ranvir once again hits the nail on the head with his effortless performance. Vaani is good as well, but her unconventional looks might be a hindrance to some desi purists.
France is a winner, very nicely filmed in every frame!
This movie is miles ahead of ADHM. And this is coming from a person who absolutely detests YashRaj/Dharma production films. Befikre is not a classic or a great film..but as a stand-alone movie…it is good, and after watching all the trailers it looked trashy and boring, so it was a surprising outcome.
The casting was the weak point; Ranveer is not capable of ‘carrying’ a movie of this type…I feel a younger SRK would’ve been good here or even Ranbir would’ve been a better choice. The actress was good, but again this film would’ve benefited with stronger casting. Overall, it was predictable but still watchable which usually is not the case for a Aditya Chopra film for me. Easily his second best directed film after DDLJ.
IMHO, Ranveer carried the role perfectly. The Delhi ka launda vibe was evident, and the theatre I watched in had people laughing at his antics throughout. I was actually surprised that critics had trashed his performance here.
But all said and done, the movie is a contemporary western romance with all the slutting thrown in, not a traditional desi or even crossover types we have seen recently. So it would not find too many takers among desi audiences.
Pretty bad. And the fact that they chose 2 mediocre lead-actors itself is pretty bad [That Aditya Roy is grating on the nerves]. NITYA was a PHENOMENON in OKK. Rarely, in the past 10 years have I seen an actress project a vulnerability with her eyes and expressions the way Nitya projects. They have all the right names: Gulzar, ARR, and Shaad Ali. But I still suspect a very ‘modern for the sake of being modern’ vibe here.
Having watched OKK thrice already, there is no freaking reason to watch this. Pretty disappointing that ARR has just recycled the music from OKK.
Staying miles away from this.
A very good casting choice is that of Nasser replacing Prakash Raj.
probably not a bad investment for him. The thing though is that it will be a scene by scene remake if not frame by frame. And so anyone who’s not seen the original will like it a lot much as many people like Saathiya too.
I like the casting. Seems fresh. Also shot very well. My ony worry that lightweight romances without some emotional connect doesn’t do so well. Befikre is a good example…this movie is also in the same terrain. There is hardly any conflict in the movie. It’s good to watch but nothing beyond that. The music is wow though. Nitya menon was very good but shraddha can match her charm if not her acting.
With all due respect Bombay audiences find something ‘fresh’ every other week. It must be one of the most abused terms around..
Seriously though the trailer looks fine, nothing wrong with it. Just that after the original (which itself was hardly anything special coming from Ratnam, except for the fact that he still seemed to be so ‘with it’ in terms of representing this generation..) there’s no reason to revisit it.

Befikre had an average weekend of 34.50 crore nett apprx but the sort of trend such multiplex films need over the weekend was not there. There was growth on Saturday and Sunday but not the sort which would make you confident of a good hold over the weekdays. The weekend should have been around 10% higher from the opening it took. The numbers are fine from a commercial point of view as weekend business is enough to push into plus zone. The problem is the big pre release revenue has come because its an Aditya Chopra film but if the film does not hold and find appreciation then revenues for television, digital etc become hard to recover for whoever paid. The collections are also pretty good genre wise as the only rom-com above it for the weekend is Tanu Weds Manu Returns and that was not the regular rom com as set in real India which gives more commercial value and more relatable characters.
The main issue is the film is directed by Aditya Chopra so expectations are bigger but here the collections are little less than similar types made by Imtiaz Ali (Tamasha) and Zoya Akhtar (Dil Dhadakne Do) who are directors who just have a big name in the media without a track record while Aditya Chopra is a genuine box office director as per track record. Basically when a genuine director is getting numbers similar to media directors with similar films it means the choice of subject has gone wrong somewhere. The weekend business of the film is as follows.

The best business for the film has in the Delhi / NCR area and Mumbai city and Pune. Bangalore and Hyderabad were also good but the rest of the country is not really up to the mark.
Befikre has not really done that well Worldwide as though India is fair, the Overseas markets have not done too well. The film has done well in Gulf despite a 18 certificate and being banned in Kuwait with business set to be around $800,000 but the other markets have not fared well. US / Canada is $550,000 on a big release while United Kingdom is around £175,000. This will take the Overseas business to around $2 million which is same range as Dishoom and Baar Baar Dekho. It will be the 11th best opening overseas this year. The Overseas business is well short of Aditya Chopra’s last film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which had weekend business of $3.42 million. It was a Shahrukh Khan starrer but was eight years back and releases are much wider now. The Gross figures in India are 47.50 crore apprx. The top worldwide grossers for the opening weekend in 2016 are as follows.

As this article in The Guardian points out the practice to play National Anthem in cinema halls in India was first introduced after the 1962 India-China war.
Those were the times of high national fervour, with India facing a mightier enemy at its borders. But then the National Anthem was played at the end of the movies. The moviegoers, ignorant to the diktat, would simply file out of the cinema hall soon after ‘The End’ flashed on the screens, and perhaps this was why the practice slowly faded and was eventually discontinued, until 2003.
In 2003, as reported in The Huffington Post, “Narendra Verma of the Nationalist Congress Party lobbied and got the Maharashtra government to order cinema halls to do it again.”
I remember going Pune and meeting a member from here and finding it a surprise to stand up in cinema to National anthem. As corny as it was it’s quite cool. I’m used to English footballers being embarrassed to sing their anthem.

She wrote, “Scrolling through my phone on the way to the office, I stumble on the news that to instill “committed patriotism and nationalism”, the Supreme Court has now ordered all cinema halls to play the national anthem and folks are obliged to stand up and show respect to the same.”
Though Twinkle goes on to discuss this issue in her blog, a recent post of hers on her social networking handle cracked us up. She wrote, “But I still can’t wrap my head around how and why I am obliged to feel patriotic when I have merely booked tickets for Befikre, and am about to see Ranveer Singh in his tight red underwear.”

Oh trying to be funny lady, the national anthem is ‘preparing’ you for heightened emotions..Get ready..
On trending it’s way worse than Pink let alone Piku (or some of the other small films that have fallen in this range). BOI have throughout pretended it’s a limited audience for this sort of film. That’s of course bull and I won’t repeat my older comments in this regard. In literal terms it’s falling way short of Piku and barely catching Pink. All these films of course started much lower. You don’t get the star initial to make up for it later! Even if BOI pretend not to know what is completely obvious. DZ could have easily done 80-100. WOM wasn’t comparable of course but duh… that’s true for any film that doesn’t work or that underperforms. Nonetheless already calling Befikre a semi hit and DZ a flop is plain silly. But yeah Kahaani 2 is a total flop.

Anyways, according to BOI as well.. it is almost touching 65 crores today as you didn’t check the Sat/Sun collections!

I accounted for that.. but it’s adding negligibly at this point.. and there’s nothing to refute. A film that started stronger than Pink or Piku or whatever but ends up only at the level of Pink and way behind Piku has some explaining to do! And let’s not get into truly silly stuff like ‘WOM was better for those films’ or ‘why were you expecting 300 crores from DZ?’ or ‘it rained that day’ or what have you. SRK fans always have a million excuses in these situations (including ‘oh he’s decided to stop doing blockbuster type films! yeah after he didn’t get the desired results in several attempts!). I’ll just add this. Barring his very early days SRK has never ever been very successful doing the different at any end of the production spectrum (and relative to the expectations of each project) with the exception of CDI. Between KHKN and the present CDI is probably the only example of a proper hit. Everything else is disappointing to various degrees if not an outright failure. there are only so many excuses one can make. Again SRK fans often try to present even slightly different films from him as art house efforts but even by those standards these films don’t work (though they’re sometimes ok on pure budgeting.. not because the audience loved them). Incidentally I wouldn’t have had an issue if DZ had touched a 100 or whatever. Whatever my sense of SRK might be I am for or against films generally based on their politics not otherwise. Secondly it’s not about debates on blogs like this. When OSO worked no one ‘debated’ it, when CE worked again no one ‘debated’ it. If Raees works in a big way no one’s going to argue. If you have to get into the minutiae, specially with a star the media/trade is generally kind to, you’ve already lost the plot (pun intended). I just said that calling DZ a flop as Rediff did is going too far. But for this kind of claim to even be minimally plausible there must be some ambiguity about the film’s box office. Again no one says CDI is a flop!
and let me add this here.. it’s easy to taunt Aamir as many do.. but it’s not easy to get a success out of a different or somewhat risky commercial film, let alone do it as consistently as he has for many years. When even a poorly trending Talaash does 90 that’s the star’s credibility. And again this isn’t a SRK v Aamir thing for me. As always I’m highlighting the utter hypocrisy of some. If SRK has been doing fine for a dozen years or so Aamir must be in a different profession.

I completely agree with everything Satyam says here about DZ BO. Rediff is obviously not a great source, but if they call it a flop, then there is an ambiguity in the BO circles. Komal Nahata is going to call it an average film probably, and to me, that is where it stands.
The film started with some clear advantages. It was an out and out multiplex film, and hence somewhat insulated from demonetization. Many of us knew SRK was in a supporting part, but he was projected as the lead in the promos. He went out of his way to promote the film, and that bore results too. The film opened quite well for its genre and stayed steady for almost one and half weeks. But the film saw absolutely no growth from there on. Ideally, it should have gained from that big early momentum SRK gave it, and gone on from strength to strength. There isn’t any tangible craze. No one is talking about it. Not the audience, not the media and not even SRK.
That’s not the trajectory of a hit film. When a film captures popular imagination, the mainstream media picks up the story, the BO coverage does not stop, the collections show a healthy growth.
I have expressed how the film didn’t work for me, but even if I had liked it, I would have been surprised how at how the WOM is tepid at best. Yes, the film is technically a success at the BO, given its low budget and SRK not taking his fee etc. But that is not a measure of a hit film really.
I don’t think in last 3 years anyone has quoted ‘Rediff’ for boxoffice collections on this blog. They really don’t have serious ratings to even refer casually.

The episode has already been shot and from promo footage posted online, we already know that much of what is said on the Koffee couch will be haanikarak. To begin with Aamir Khan, 51, admits to having cried while watching the trailer of Dangal. This, of course, is no surprise to anybody who has followed the timeline of Aamir’s weepiness ever since he was pictured wiping his eyes with a towel – a towel! – after a screening of Salman Khan’s 2015 film Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Aamir Khan’s lachrymose glands are his Achilles heel, so to speak, and they were not proof against the emotional tug of Dangal.
What else? Oh, yes – Aamir’s ‘daughters’ Sanya and Fatima claim he has no friends but them and we can totally believe that’s what it looks like because the actor, who has built a formidable reputation for perfection, has dedicated the last year or so to Dangal. Few in Bollywood commit so entirely to a role as Aamir Khan does and even for him, the Dangal process has been extraordinary. Part of preparing for the film involved intensive training in wrestling and learning the Haryanvi dialect, in which Sanya and Fatima trained with him.
That they are friends and not just colleagues is fairly clear from the banter on Koffee With Karan, including accusations from the two actresses of Aamir trying to ‘steal’ their answers to win the hamper in the Rapid Fire.
Befikre had a normal fall of 50% om Monday from Friday as it grossed 5 crore nett apprx. It is a fair collection but it may be bumped up a minor holiday for Eid-E-Milad and if so then it will mean a higher then normal drop. The holiday was in most states while a few states will have that holiday today. The four day total of the film is 39.25 crore nett apprx. The holds are best in the mass pockets be it the Central India territories of CPCI or UP, these places have fallen around 40% from Friday. It could be due to that holiday factor but that will be known over the next few days. The hold is better than the weekend trend suggested but again it will be the next few days that will tell the real value. The first four day business of the film is as follows.

The film has grossed 13.50 crore nett in Mumbai, 8 crore in Delhi / UP and 4.25 crore nett in East Punjab over the first four days. These are the best performing circuits but the bext holds on Monday have come in CP Berar and CI. .
Actually this year has been notably quiet and not much of buzz created to even step out to the theatres. I just realized this year is going to be a personal record of sorts for me with only 2 outings at theatre for a Hindi movie. There was Sultan in early July and the next one hopefully is going to be Dangal (provided reviews don’t point towards a boring screenplay).
Actually even DVD watches have been far and few with just 2 or 3. Majority on TV like Piku, Pink, Neerja, Airlift, Housefull 3 etc.
The year has been a disaster till date (till date because Dangal may rescue it somewhat) but there have been a couple of films that have shone. One is Sultan and the other is The Jungle Book, these two films are the only real hits of the year from universal box office to universal appreciation across the country. The Jungle Book grossed around 188 crore nett in a twenty week run. The run was more than double what the biggest Hindi films achieve.
The India GBOC of the film at 255 crore is more than the Worldwide GBOC of all Hindi releases barring Sultan. That includes films like Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom, M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. After a huge box office run the film has now taken television by storm by easily smashing all records for a Hollywood film. In fact like the box office it has fared better than many big Hindi films. The film has achieved the sixth highest rating of films premiered on television this year while it is 5th highest of films released this year. The ratings for 2016 are below and show impressions which is basically the number of television sets that viewed the films on their respective premieres.

Censor chief Pahlaj Nihalani, who had quite an issue with James Bond and Monica Bellucci kissing in Spectre, is surprisingly okay with Befikre’s PDA. In an interaction with a leading daily, Pahlaj came out in his defense and said, ” “We shortened Ranveer Singh’s butt shot quite a lot. Right now it’s just a glimpse, no more. What’s wrong with it? He is alone with his girlfriend in a room. They are doing what couples do when they are alone. Why is a butt shot objectionable? We’ve allowed butt shots in some recent Hollywood films. Also in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail.”
Not just that, Nihalani has a huge explanation over the smooching spree in Befikre! “See, unlike Ae Dil Hai Mushkil , Spectre or Tamasha where the kisses were done in lengthy shots, in Befikre the kisses are scattered and largely fleeting and all over the place. They are part of the narration. As a filmmaker, I know what can be cut without hampering the flow of the narrative. In Befikre there is no way we could cut the kisses without interrupting the flow of the story. Aditya Chopra has treated the kisses as part of the story. If we removed the kisses we’d be hampering the storytelling.”
Oh, by the way, Pahlaj also explained, the kisses would have been curtailed if needed. “We’ve cut all the close-ups of the kisses and the climactic kiss has been reduced by 50 per cent. The rest we couldn’t cut for apprehension of being accused of creative interference.”

Am really happy at the success of The Jungle Book. The movie was the best of the year along with Airlift and Sultan so far and i beleive its success is more extraordinary than the other two which are also the genre’s biggest HITS.

So we decided to make our very own version of Befikre. Why waste 2.5 hours when the job can be done in 2.5 minutes?

Aamir Khan’s Rakesh Sharma biopic will reportedly be called Saare Jahaan Se Achcha. The film will feature Aamir playing Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to go to space.
Aamir Khan is known to be working on any one film at time. But ahead of Dangal’s release, if reports are to be believed, the perfectionist Khan has already said “Okay” to not one but three scripts. It’s the first time the actor is shooting for three projects back to back in quick succession.
While there’s Advait Chauhan’s Secret Superstar where Aamir is playing a cameo, there’s also Yash Raj Films’ Thugs of Hindostan slated for a Diwali 2018 release. Directed by Dhoom 3 director Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film will also star Amitabh Bachchan.
Following these, he will begin shooting for his Rakesh Sharma biopic. The actor will be playing Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma who was the first Indian to go to space.
A source was quoted by DNA as saying, “He has already signed the Rakesh Sharma biopic which will roll on right after he completes Thugs.”
The movie is going to be produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s new production company RSVP and will be directed by director Mahesh Mathai who had previously directed the 1999 film Bhopal Express, based on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.
Now, the makers have picked up the perfect title for the film.
“Since it’s a biopic on the astronaut’s life, the team wanted a name that will not only suit the biographical film but also have a patriotic feeling attached. They had two names in mind – Salute and Saare Jahaan Se Achcha and they are going ahead with the latter. It makes more sense,” the source said.
To put things in context, when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked Rakesh Sharma how India looked from outer space, the astronaut had said, “Saare Jahaan Se Achcha.” Therefore, there couldn’t possibly be a better title for the film.
Good it was 1984 and Rakesh Sharma said ‘Saare Jahan se Acha (Hindustan hamara)’ and if it was 2016, Bhakts would have demanded why he didn’t say ‘Bharat Maata ki Jai’. Also, the title of the movie would have been ‘Bharat Maata ki Jai’.
I’m sure some of them will boycott this movie for its title! 🙂
It does look good on paper. But from a wider perspective, this was a Soviet space program and it also was 23 years after the first man in space. But it does seem that a film can be made out of any kind of achievement with any glimpse of patriotic zeal in overdrive..
On a side note, re-visited The Right Stuff last week and it is a well-made film, indeed.

We had the debacle Fan, which only seemed to be an ego-massage for the Bollywood badshah, but audiences were clearly irked by the flimsy flick. It didn’t help that Fan was release right after Dilwale, which saw our favourite couple Kajol and SRK reunite and had gotten audiences all excited. The promise of the reunion fell flat and the film was a critical and commercial disappointment.
Even the most dedicated SRKians wondered if Shahrukh could get back on track. In this atmosphere, a Raees release would have met with a more cautious approach by viewers, who’d begun to believe that their beloved icon was content churning out below-par films.
Enter Dear Zindagi – an indie film, barely costing Rs 26 crore, where Shahrukh does an ‘extended cameo’. People took notice. We got to see SRK looking his age, not doing his usual mainstream romances, mentoring Alia Bhatt’s character – basically actually acting. ‘Shahrukh is back!’ fans said on various social media and then came the trailers and first looks of Raees.
And let’s not forget that Raees was initially slated to clash with Salman Khan’s Sultan on Eid, but instead got delayed and is facing the far lesser threat of Kaabil next year.
Had it not been for Dear Zindagi, the only screen presence SRK would have gotten this year would have been the underwhelming flick Fan. Dear Zindagi not only kept the star’s face fresh in the audience’s minds, but also served as a safe buffer between a box office dud and what seems to be a real money-maker, Raees.
Lol. How can anyone plan such a thing? Raees was supposed to release in Eid and DZ was already shot in Mar/April this year and supposed to release in November. Once Raees was avoiding the clash they had no dates in Oct and Dec and Nov was DZ so they went to Jan.
Note sure if this article is taking a dig at SRK or trying to paint a “Not so bad” show of SRK, which imo is his worst year ever.

There is no major competition this week but this drop makes a real dent in the chances of the film put up solid second week numbers. The collections fell over with bigger falls in areas that got benefit of the mini holiday on Monday. In places like Rajasthan the holiday was on Tuesday so collections did not drop there. The first five day business of the film is as follows.

The first week business of the film will be around 49 crore nett which is on the lower side and the second week will probably struggle to put up a decent number even though there is no real competition as far as multiplex business is concerned.
So expected, after 3 blockbusters, Aditya Chopra delivers his 1st flop. He had a great track record and now ruined. Strangely when Sooraj Barjatya made 4th film without Salman, he had a flop in MPKDH. Similarly when Farah Khan tried to move away from SRK, she gave Tees Maar Khan. Karan managed small hit in SOTY and ADHM but his success level has lowered.

On economical and critical basis … KANK was flop in India and MNIK was very average .. both movies got as much appreciation as ADHM or SOTY , nothing more.

A big budget movie releasing in 2006 (when business was as high as 85 Crore for Hit movies) … got record breaking opening .. and crashed in first week itself and wrapped under 40 Crore .. if this is not flop then what else ??

85 crores LMAO!! MHN in 2004 did 35 crores, VZ did 42 crores. In 2006, RDB did 53 crores and Fanaa did 52 crores(without gujarat) whereas KANK did 46 crores and Don did 51 crores.
Yes, I’m aware Dhoom 2 did 80+ but it came towards end of the year but that doesn’t make it norm when average hit around that time will still in 40 to 55 crores.
@Master .. BOI was reluctant to call RDB a Hit at 50 Crore which came in January, 2006. BOI already downgraded their shameful verdict of KANK from Hit to Semi Hit. Slowly in coming years they will correct it Average and then flop. Akal aane mein thoda time lagta hai ….

Not a fair argument regarding Adi \ Karan getting their success with SRK but not without him. Niether SOTY or Befikre were big budget type movies so no one expected them to do blockbuster bueiness. Also, both of these guys can sign Salman tomorrow and deliver a blockbuster so the whole SRK argument falls flat.

Q. You have said many times that films like Queen, Kahaani, Neerja, Piku and Pink have not been appreciated but just look at the trend at the box office they do 10-20 times the opening day business..
A. That is irrelevant, the lower you start the bigger chance you have of putting up a higher lifetime against day one ratio. Appreciation comes through getting footfalls across the country and getting enough people to like that film which can then result in longevity by having a few good years on television circuit. After this if the film has the correct characters it can even be turned into a franchise. For the films you have mentioned the correct word is overrated rather than public appreciation.
Q. With Raees and Kaabil coming a day apart now does it mean they can open better as one film will be solo and the other will have first day on a big holiday?
A. Obviously the opening will be bit better for both films now than if they had come in the same day but its still a clash and screen issues are going to be there. The only difference is that there is no choice for the audience on one day. A release on the day after each other does not mean the clash is averted.
Q. Will Dangal beat Sultan and be the widest release of the year ?
A. There is a dubbed version of the film and with that it may be the widest but in Hindi alone it will probably be less than Sultan.
Q. The fans of younger stars like Ranbir and Ranveer are supportive of each other films but why do Salman and Shahrukh fans fight even though bit actors are against this and said many times?
A. There are no fights, it may be there on the internet but there are arguments over many things on net. As for the actors being against it, its good to say but if it all stoped it will probably men stardom going down. As for the younger stars they probably have not managed to acquire a strong fan base yet.
on the first question their response has really plumbed new depths of stupidity. Most films around the world that go on to win Oscars and so on have that sort of opening and trending and final gross. They don’t start out (or end up) like the Avengers! To take a current and recent example Villeneuve’s acclaimed and successful Siccario had a lifetime gross of 47m. Arrival being a sci-fi deal has done 75m so far. There are Oscar winners that do 100-150m or a bit more and those are super successes, specially the latter. And these often enjoy good trending for a much longer time because of all the awards hype (not just the Oscars). And even these are hardly comparable to other important grossers out there. Take the Revenant. A top star in a more accessible adventure genre. The film did 183m but then Mission Impossible 5 did close to 200! And otherwise blockbuster type movies do at least 350 and go all the way unto 630 or so (Avengers or whatever). Consider the spread. In India all of these movies are compared the same way. So BOI would probably attack some of those award winners for appealing to limited audiences. But let’s go further than this. Many of the greatest movies in history are art house films or at least very non-commercial films that very few people see even when their ‘big hits’. The BOI stupidity is just breath-taking. Even otherwise their responses are usually childish and illiterate.
BOI is now overdone with ‘N’ number of articles to prove that likes of PIKU and PINK are not appreciated movies. Success of these movies are not digesting to BOI and they are coming up with same points every other day since 2-3 months now.
So basically BOI means to say that likes of Golmaal, Chupke Chupke, Baato Baato Mein, Angoor, Padosan, Anand , Chashme Badoor … etc are trashy movies and not got any appreciation. These movies don’t have any significance in Indian cinema history and these sort of movies should never been made at first place.
BOI wants that only big budget masala movies with bankable stars should be made. No one should do any experiments with rich content and non bankable stars. And if someone do that and even got success commercially, BOI will trash it left right and center.
And note .. how BOI was never came up against these kind of movies till PIKU and PINK happened. Success of these movies boiled them down and now every other day they are coming up with write-up against these movies.
Complete disgrace. There has been other songs copied and shown with some dignity. With this one, they’ve taken a song which original was not meant to be trashy and turned it into a trashy song.
If you take something like aap jaisa koi from qurbaani and show it like this, that’s fine. But don’t take something like title songs of qurbaani and show it with trashy dance moves.
Twenty-one years ago, Aditya Chopra made his directorial debut: Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge! The film is a personal favourite, was an unqualified success (still running today at Maratha Mandir), and has aged surprisingly well.
Aditya’s descent from making classics (actually that shouldn’t be a plural) was rapid. Mohabbatein was painful other than the scenes with the primary trio. Whilst DDLJ had a host of great tracks, Mohabbatein’s only memorable song is Lata’s Humko Humhi Se Churalo (the nightingale once again bringing redemption to an otherwise poor movie). Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was so unwatchable that I couldn’t continue past the interval. And with Befikre Aditya has once again proved that his debut should have also been his swansong.
The first half is inane. The movie attempts to be edgy in a Before Sunrise kind of way (unsurprising given that the film is apparently inspired by a French release) but Aditya Chopra is exceedingly stale (whilst shouting from the rooftops that he has made something bold and daring).
Ranveer plays the world’s unfunniest (which is likely unintentional) stand-up comedian; the scenes where he is on-stage are cringeworthy, unable to even induce a chuckle from the real-life audience. He has always been fun to watch in interviews, but perhaps he is now past his expiry date (whilst he has had box-office success, Ranbir is undoubtledy the ‘actor’ of the two). Vaani meanwhile plays a poorly written French-born Indian who is unnecessarily mean to her parents (hard to resist an unflattering comparison with Gauri Shinde’s sensitive creation Kaira in Dear Zindagi). Shyra is meant to be an incredibly screwed-up, complicated character but I got the feeling that that’s what we are supposed to believe rather than what we feel (if I were feeling kinder I might suggest that Shyra WANTS people to think she’s more messed up than she is, but that would be supposing Aditya Chopra to be far more insightful than he clearly is).
Whilst Karan’s nods to his earlier works was amusing (cute even) in ADHM, Aditya’s hearkenings of DDLJ only induce a sad shake of the head. His climax resembles (and is as bad as) the post-millenium movies of father’s banner (namely Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai). However unlike those two unimpressive films that both at least had decent soundtracks (leave alone the dizzying musical heights that the Chopra banner was once famous for) Befikre has consistently forgettable songs.
There were two ‘real’ moments in this travesty. Firstly the looks that Shyra’s mother gives her; here is a relationship (and indeed the one between Shyra’s parents) that we might want to know better but sadly never do. Secondly, when Dharam tells Shyra that it makes him sick to the stomach when he sees her with another man; we sense the film is finally ready to errupt but instead the scene fizzles out. Despite the poor writing, Vaani performance is passable though yet again a comparison to earlier Chopra leads will not flatter her.
The ridiculous climax, where inanity descends into mild hilarity only proves that whilst Aditya can just about manage slapstick, he’s not got the skills to make a relationship drama or even a pleasant romantic comedy anymore. Let alone the epic heights reached by Imtiaz Ali in Tamasha, Aditya cannot even muster up a watchable and relatable film like his one-time assistant Karan Johar. Karan’s cinema attained adulthood this year, eighteen years after his debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Sadly, twenty-one years after his own spectacular debut (which perhaps explains my own tendency to repeatedly litter this piece with unfair comparisons) Aditya Chopra, rather than coming of age, has only regressed.
Thanks Salim, good review. Many of the points you’ve mentioned I too felt the same, very similar thoughts for this movie. This was a colossal misfire by Aditya Chopra.
“They both are also favourites of Raj Kumar Hirani and one waits to see if the filmmaker chips in to help avert this clash,” a Bollywood insider wonders, “He has made Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai with Dutt, while with Khan he has made 3 Idiots and PK. (with Sanjay Dutt in there as well). Maybe if he has a chat with them, one of the two films would move to a different date.”
While one waits to see that happen, the first step would be for director Omung Kumar to bring Bhoomi on floors.
This is good deal for SRK and lot of folks who have Netflix. First movie to be on Netflix is ‘Dear Zindagi’ and then all his past 5 year releases. Good for someone to watch DZ who missed in cinemas.
Bollywood seems really desperate these days and anything to get few eyeballs to look at their product. Filmmakers /actors making last-gasp efforts to recycle old hit numbers. Within a spate of a month I have heard 5/6 old numbers getting recycled –

On another note as a year end analysis, I am finding Siddharth Malhotra impressive. Watched him on TV recently and if he gets the right movies he is the one to watch out for. Good looks, built, voice, temperament – he needs to go full on masala like varun because all this ‘no strings attached’ Hollywood sex model is not definition of love as far as Indian masses is concerned.
He has been rightly cast in Bang Bang Reloaded…and hope he turns out better than Mr stale Roshan boy…err no more a boy !
2016 Sets New Record But Unwanted Record

The year is coming to an end and in one way it can be said to be record breaking but its record breaking in the way no one would like to see. Last year (2015) was the first time in its 100 year plus history that there was over 200 Hindi films released in the calendar year. This year it has gone better as not only has the 200 film release mark been surpassed but another record has been set with more than 200 FLOP films. The tally so far for 2016 is 218 Hindi films with three weeks to go and the flop count is 203. Only fifteen Hindi films have done AVERAGE business or better. It is no doubt going to be the first year ever as far as successful films are concerned.
If we go back twenty five years to 1991 there were 144 Hindi releases and 28 films did average or better business. That is close to 20% success ratio compared to 7% this year. If we go back another 25 years the ratio gets even better. Not only are the successes minimal but there is only one Hindi grosser (Sultan) also, it would not be so bad if the ratio is so low but there are 4 or 5 films which were grossers but that is not the case.
It is true that out of the 218 films its only 50 at best that have some sort of awareness therefore some chance at the box office but people still seem to be taking a chance when in this era there is little hope for those 150 plus films to find an audience. There has to be bottom somewhere down the line as can it get worse than a 7% success ratio when it was over 50% in the 70’s. This is also happening when the releases look better on paper year after year. 2016 was looking better than 2015 and now 2017 does looks better than 2016 but hopefully the ratio will not be 7% this time next year.

The Jungle Book – Collections For Unbelievable 22 Week Run

The Jungle Book had a 22 week run across theatres in India while no Hindi film has even managed to last ten weeks in the theatres this year. The fifth week figures of the film are the third highest ever after legendary films like 3 Idiots and Gadar. The sixth week goes even better with second highest figures of all time after Gadar. This film shows what a real content film can do as acceptance comes from all over as compared to Hindi content films which limit themselves to a minority audience and are talked about more than what they actually achieve. The first day to lifetime ratio is also more than the Hindi content films be it Neerja, Pink or Piku and here its not starting from a poor 4-5 crore level but more than double that. The lifetime collections of The Jungle Book are as follows.
Befikre Struggles On Weekdays

Befikre struggled on the weekdays after managing average business for the first four days. The big drop in business on Tuesday sealed its fate and now even though there is not much competition this week its not really going to benefit the film. The first week collections are around 48.50 crore nett after a 34.50 crore nett weekend. So even with a decent Monday the film could only add around 40% on the weekdays. The first week collections are the 11th highest of the year behind films like Baaghi and Dishoom and while Befikre had Ranveer Singh those films also featured young stars like Tiger Shroff and Varun Dhanwan. Despite the added advantage of a director like Aditya Chopra, the film still collected less than those films.
The problem was always going to the genre as rom-coms only appeal to the youth and that too urban youth so if you get appreciation from this sector you may go on to do 85-90 crore nett though 75 crore nett is still the highest for the genre. But if the target audience does not take to it than that minority audience dwindles further and this is what has happened here. Even if the film had worked it may have done 90 crore, lets push it and say100 crore nett which would be excellent for the genre but still would not be big number for an Aditya Chopra film because of the prior blockbusters. A big director has to so a universal film as only that way there is a chance of meeting expectations.

Love that finally Karan/Aditya Chopra are getting influenced by Imtiaz Ali. For me the single most contribution in the vocabulary by Imtiaz Ali will be the term ” MANGO People” he coined for Love Aaj Kal for ‘Aam Junta/Common folks’. The word has literally created new word in vocabulary and been used everywhere from that time. It is nothing short of astonishing to my mind and it sounds so good to call common folks as Mango ppl. Kudos for that!!

I feel bad for Jackie Shroff. He had given screen test and was very hopeful to bag the role but finally he was not selected. If you ask me, I would prefer Jackie doing Sunil Dutt’s role than Akshaye Khanna especially when Sanjay was in jail (’93) and then Sunil Dutt went all around to get him released. It would be little awkward to see Akshaye Khanna playing ‘old’ dad to Ranbir Kapoor when not much age difference between them. Akshaye is 41 whereas Ranbir is 34.

Akshaye is always good as actor and pleasure to watch on screen. Unfortunately he got in late with his hair weaving or simply did not bother to the vanity part associated with a bollywood actor which is a must esp good growth is a must….
Salman, Ranbir, Varun, Kapil Sharma got in timely before audience could grasp.Salman late nineties balding is very visible so is Kapil Sharma when u see his YouTube videos of Laughter Challenge. Ranbir was balding very early and quick but due to closeness to Salman / Katrina got in timely but still his early films show signs. Still there is bandana whenever he is playing soccer.
Aamir and Anil Kapoor scenario is not clear – may be hair genetics have assisted.
There are rumors of srk and bachchan wearing wigs but god knows what’s the truth. Sachin hair weaving tales are pretty much public so is Sehwag.
There are couple of 2nd tier celebrities with hair weaving and implants but audience does not even bother to know.
Bottom-line – Indian men are prone to balding and Rajinikanth is one of the only celebrities with some sort of openness to this.

Review: Befikre is joyful and will make you smile

Aditya Chopra’s film reminds us that a well-shot Bollywood romantic film can be so entertaining even when it does not offer anything new, says Aseem Chhabra.
Vani Kapoor and Ranveer Singh dance with abandon in BefikreAditya Chopra’s fourth feature as a director — Befikre is a hot and sexy film.
Despite its thin plot (what plot, a journalist friend asked me after the film’s premiere at the Dubai International Film Festival), the film holds its attention with the good looking stars, their energy, songs, dances and many lovely day and night scenes in Paris.
Chopra’s film reminds us that a well-shot Bollywood romantic film can be so entertaining even when it does not necessarily offer anything new.
Befikre opens with a string of kisses. As the credits appear on the screen, we see several characters on the streets of Paris — young, old and of different colours, kissing as Labon Ka Karobaar plays in the background.
It is a sweet, romantic and very happy look at Paris.
One loses the count of the kisses, just as it is impossible to say how many times the film’s leads — Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor — lock lips through the film.
Singh and Kapoor kiss with full abandonment in Befikre, again and again, and it is sexy, fun and absolutely okay.
The film is a signal of how far India, Bollywood and the censor board (despite the strange conservative mood the current board often reflects) have come from the days when Hindi films would show flowers and bees to suggest romance, or physical contact between the male and female leads.
But the sexy tones of the film do not stop there. The first scene has Singh’s Dharam breaking up with his live-in girl friend. And as he angrily throws her out of his apartment Dharam struts around only in a short black boxer brief.
Also I do not know how much the censor board has cut from the film (we clearly saw the uncensored version of the film in Dubai), but Singh will go down in history of Indian cinema as the first actor to pose completely naked from the back. It is a very brief shot, but I doubt if Chopra used a body double.
Kapoor’s fans should not be disappointed. The actress shows enough skin through the film, often taking her top off and showing her bra. She especially looks positively hot shaking her hips and dancing to the song Nashe Si Chad Gayi.
And she and Singh are equally attractive dancing on the streets of Paris to the song Ude Dil Befikre.
Kapoor and Singh are natural dancers and even in many of the film’s choreographed sequences they move their bodies with a lot of ease. And their tango-ish dance scene towards the end of the film simmers with a lot of sexual tension.
With all of this sexually charged energy it hardly matters that Befikre attempts to follow a story line.
Dharam is a young man from Karol Bagh in Delhi and he retains a tad bit of Bittoo Sharma’s Janakpuri accent from Band Baaja Baaraat. Dharam arrives in Paris to perform at a stand-up comedy club called Delhi Belly.
Singh is often very funny in the film, and utterly likeable and charming, but he is flat as a stand-up comic. Perhaps Dharam should have been given a different career path in Paris.
In Paris Dharam meets Shrya (played with a lot of confidence by Kapoor) — an Indian woman, born and raised in France. They dance, drink, sing songs, fall in love, move in together, fall out of love and then much like Band Baaja Baaraat’s Bittoo Sharma and Shruti Kakkar decide to become friends.
In fact, Befikre carries quite a bit of BBB hangover, with occasional nod to Chopra’s breakthrough film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
But in Befikre Dharam and Shyra take it one level further when in a state of confusion and anger they get engaged and even close to marrying other partners.
Of course, Befikre is a Hindi film and no surprise how it will end.
There are some messy moments in the film, especially the weird unruly slapstick scene towards the end in a church.
And that is when one senses that Chopra is not in full control of the plot. He knows how the film will end, but the path to that seems forced and convoluted.
Still much of Befikre is loaded with a carefree spirit. It is joyful and it will make you smile.

why SRK is dictating when Kaabil should be released ? RR said it is upto Exhibitors and producers to decide whether Kaabil should be a regular day release or evening release on 25th jan.

Srk has degraded himself to very low level by each passing year, jsut recently he walking out of star screen awards and now this shows his desperation for success, but all on unethical grounds? well, i always knew, but people still defend him.

Hardly surprising. I think overall, SRK has a reputation of being a bit machiavellic. Got into games Aamir Khan decided not to get into during the making of Darr.
Bullied OUATIMD into releasing a week later and then reneged a promise by giving up 400 less screens than what had been previously agreed upon. This was reported by the producers of OUATIM and when they cried foul, it is said that SRK never responded to Jeetendra’s attempts to get in touch. Some multiplex owners at that time also confirmed in the media that they had been pressurised by SRK and producers of CE not to give up screens.
But at the same time, SRK has to look at the best interest of his movie here. There is lots of money riding on it and he badly needs a hit as well. Of course, it is understandable that these should take priority. But, as I said earlier, neither is SRK the epitome of honesty, nor are the Roshans that naive.

I remember OUTIMD was sabotaged by screen disputes and srk’s pr. Only way it could have overcome this was if it was way superior product like BM. CE and outimd were both equally bad products. I commend how Devgn managed SOS release vs jthj and it was true success. BM doing 40 cr more than Dilwale in the end was more due to significantly better product.
Here both trailer looks bad and i dont have much hope from any of the two.

But yeah SRK really needs a big one. And in some sense the great reception for the trailer plus the fact that it looks so masala increases the stakes. Because now he can’t get away with just a decent success/gross. On the other hand he could get a very significant one here if the film is anything like the trailer.

These blink and miss roles by Deepika and now Priyanka make Aishwarya’s hollywood career looks far better right now, and she didnt do skin show. Pink panther2 and Last legion had pretty good screen time , actually she was the one and only antagonist in the former and bride & prejudice had her in lead role if it can be called hollywood film by virtue of crew and production involved.

Dear Zindagi has crossed the 60 crore* mark in two weeks. The film had fair collections in the second week and while it is still playing in select theaters in the third week, the makers would be looking at the lifetime collections of 65-67 crore for the Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan starrer.

yes it’s ending up in Pink range despite opening much higher. Now of course BOI ‘prepared’ for this from day one saying that despite the opening these sorts of films had a limited audience. This way they could cheer SRK for the opening while not attributing any of the trending to him! But of course this begs the question why the film could do 15 crores or more like Piku and why it had to stop at Pink level. Or why it couldn’t do something in between. Leaving this aside the original explanation is bull anyway. If Piku had released today and opened like DZ it would have done a 100. But now some genius will turn up and say ‘hey it was liked a lot more’. Yeah.. Aamir too pulls these dirty tricks quite regularly. Deliberately working in films that more people like. Or some other Einstein will say ‘for it’s budget it’s a global hit’. Sure. But it could have been this even if it had made a lot less! Seriously though I wouldn’t call DZ a bad performance but it’s clear that after the weekend it held up well but at a somewhat low level and after week 1 at an even lower one. Specially with an initial this sort of film can easily fall in the 80-100 range. And of course this is why BOI didn’t talk about the collections much during the week and focused on the overall international gross. And now they’re running this fiction once more:

Initial was due to SRK, not the film. Lifetime collection is due to film.
Pink initial was due to no cast and lifetime collection was good due to film.
I mean one shouldn’t need more simple reason then that.
Take Kahaani for example, same lead in both. Why one made more than the other?

yes of course it’s always about the film in the end.. but the star can’t get away by just relying on an initial. By this logic no flop should ever matter. Because the star’s judgment is also part of the deal. I don’t know when the SRK fans will stop making excuses! Similarly you can keep taking digs at Bachchan but SRK would give an arm and a leg to be able to do stuff like Pink or Piku or even some of the other promising stuff Bachchan has done recently (at his age!) that hasn’t done as well. How do we know this? Well when you do a actress-centric DZ more or less for free it’s clear you want some sort of success somehow!
Now it’s of course true that Bachchan damaged his initial a long time back with overexposure and bad decisions and so on. However notice what happens with films like Pink or Piku. Once people are convinced the film is good and he has a strong performance (in all of these smaller films his performance is very much part of the film’s narrative and ultimate box office success.. Black, Paa, Piku, Pink) the films trend very well. In fact these films rely so much on Bachchan being absolutely central that they just wouldn’t work as well without him (they would do well enough but not at that level.. other smaller films can do as well but not these particular ones because they’re structured a certain way). The star’s credibility then is very important. This is what we see for Aamir as well. Why didn’t Bajrangi do as much or more than PK despite everyone loving it? Now of course the fans always make excuses till the cows come home but Aamir in Bajrangi would have crossed PK. A lot go Aamir’s films aren’t in the Ghajini mould so they open very well but not in a record-setting way. But again his credibility is such that people always show up and specially with strong WOM the trending still outpaces that for any other star in similar circumstances. How do we know? Look at Salman’s or SRK’s ‘hits’.
So when one is anxious about one’s favorite star (which anxiety one always reveals in a variety of ways) one can keep making excuses (or even use a religious excuse for a forthcoming SRK film potentially not doing well!), one can keep attacking other stars, all of this doesn’t change anything. As a larger matter (and I’m repeating something here.. not that it makes a difference) before questioning the credibility of others one must make sure one’s own credibility isn’t in tatters. The day SRK fans have an honest conversation about him they can start questioning others. By the way in all these years I have yet to come across a true blue SRK fan, i.e. one truly devoted to him who has this honesty. This happens with other kinds of fans to but not quite to the same degree. Now some SRK fans might be more pleasant about things, some might not but the arguments are nonetheless are not honestly framed. In the last 12 years SRK has three clean hits in OSO, RDBNJ, CE. Then of course there’s CDI in a smaller genre. Countless films have either failed, underperformed or in some cases not even got enough of an initial. And across genres. Now one can keep saying ‘hey it’s a good initial’. Meanwhile Aamir and Salman are miles ahead. Two different models but the result is the same. And you can keep saying ‘top 3’ or whatever!

you’ve answered your own question.. there isn’t a ‘top 3’. That’s the whole point! A top 3 means relative parity and there isn’t this among the top 3 (of course I note you cannot count more successes!). There’s a top 2 and then there are the others. One can decide on those positions but they’re certainly not threatening Aamir or Salman in any sense. As for your other question the answer to this, whatever it is, will not elevate SRK to the top 2! That’s the only answer that should matter to you! But otherwise I’ve never been in denial of reality. Or put differently I’m not a SRK fan!

That’s an incorrect assessment. Each movie has its own destiny and sometime the star / actors fit the narrative to the T. In fact BB would fall flat with Aamir starring in it and would be a dull affair…thats why aamir gave it a pass. For instance whatever be the level of stardom of either a Salman or an Aamir, they simply cannot exchange their roles in Sultan and Dangal and get similar results. Both movies would have huge credibility issues. In the Indian context the off-screen persona to connect with a subject is a must and is a very important one……this is one of the reason a lot other actors are finding it difficult to get results at the box office. Akshay after a number of years has finally found his groove and makes sense finally has started to make sense when he says – main jo bolta hu woh karta hu, aur jo me nahi bolta wo main definitely karta hoon. ”
SRK will continue to fail for number of years until he finds the correct zoning and performs honestly by getting into the skin of the character he plays…..the audience of 2016 is much different than 90s or even a early 2000s. More than a Dabangg of 2009 , I feel Salman came clean with Wanted in 2008. That movie today would be a huge grosser but never did much at that time due to credibility issues Salman was facing.
In my estimation DZ is an underperformer whatever may be the genre talks.That movie should have done at least a 100 cr today. Raees gives him a chance to crossover but audience trust is vaning fast unless he surprises with authenticity which going by the promo does not seem to be. All this clash talk is purposeful and part of his defense mechanism and a diversion in case of failure again.

you said at the time BB would cross PK. I guess ‘destiny’ is a good fallback excuse… well no Salman film seems to have that destiny so far.. and in each case you predicted all sorts of things. There’s livewire before release and after!
By the way I do agree that Aamir couldn’t do Sultan. But Bajrangi is a pretty regular narrative-drive film. It’s hardly a subject other stars couldn’t do. I’d actually argue it would be an even better narrative film with Aamir. It certainly could have had a better first half. But the idea that the guy who did Ghajini and broke all kinds of records couldn’t do Bajrangi is more than a little bizarre. This gets back to my comment to Z. It’s one thing to be even a huge fan and quite another to be utterly divorced from reality.

Anyone could take up Bajrangi Bhaijaan and in part get the required success. It’s the blockbuster results I am referring here. Unlike the cold hearted folks on this blog, there is a ‘Being Human’ Salman off-screen which a lot of massy /lower rung in India connect and Bajrangi Bhaijaan is an extension of that persona. Have a look at the viral video of that girl crying when the BB got over. Aamir on the contrary has to spend time, work at it to cultivate the ‘make believe’ which comes natural to Salman.
Aamir let go the script as the character of Bajrangi was alien to him unlike Salman who took to it like a fish takes to water and even produced it since at human level whatever he is doing in life connected with the theme.

as much as I liked DZ, I agree it should’ve earned more. I guess many people didnt turn up for it, and a majority found it to be just okay. Earning 65 crores despite opening at 10 crores doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been accepted.

Having said that, Befikre seems to be the worst of Aditya Chopra going by some of the reactions in social media. cant believe aditya chopra takes a hiatus of 8 years to come up with something like this. RNBDJ was a disappointing effort for many but was still a watchable film on the whole. befikre looks like an outright disaster going by the reviews and reactions. suppose he is much better off as a producer.

When comparing Pink with DZ, we should consider one more scenario.. of cashlessness. Ofcourse the next argument will be that multiplex ppl use card swipe to pay, but when you have to swipe cards for everything and cash in hand is hard to come by, even some multiplex audience may give up movies and such as luxuries. Don’t altogether dismiss it, because what may have happened if this factor was nor there, you definitely don’t know.

Lets not compare Pink and DZ…although I haven’t watched DZ but it doesn’t have the same acceptance like Pink…among my friend circles only few liked DZ while couple of them mentioned they almost slept and found it slow and preachy…cashlessness and all are just excuses not only for DZ but for other movies as well (it affects but not that much specially metro centric movies)

Appreciation for DZ was missing from day one. Reviews were mixed too otherwise it should have crossed 100 -110 cr. Piku with 60% less opening did 80 cr, pink with 70% less opening did same final total, neerja with 60% less opening did 73 cr.
And trust me there was always good enough audience for DZ , it was more fun film than any of above and srk’s presence gives this much wider audience.
One thing is true either srk’s audience has diminished significantly or Film does has appreciation.

Back from Befikre!! Well, I never thought I will say this but Aditya Chopra’s experiment is a major misfire. I wouldn’t even call it an experiment but as Aditya Chopra calls it experiment as he removed the strengths in all his 3 successful movies and tried to make this movie. It is not emotional, it is not deep, it does not have strong dialogues( as it is casual talk always) and not even an great story or concept. Then why do one even attempt such a movie? All the above stuff ended being the flaws of the movie.
The movie starts well and then slowly the cracks appear when the jokes keeps falling flat as there is serious chemistry lacking between the leads. The movie still manages to keep itself float till the 1st half but once 2nd half starts it goes down the hill. The movie which was supposed to never get serious tries to do the same and half heartedly(he’s thinking not to make it heavy) but that perfect balance of feel good romantic comedy is never achieved. The pace keeps fluctuation from forced comic scenes to forced emotional drama and finally a bizarre climax which doesn’t go well with the movie.
So, is the worst movie made? Of Course not. The movie would have been fine and even to an extent acceptable if it was made my some debutant director but with the power comes the responsibility. So, with Aditya Chopra’s name attached to it, it is huge misfire and unacceptable movie. There was no need to ever make this movie(even as the holiday movie as Karan did on SOTY, which I prefer vastly to this one). The movie further falls flat coz of Ranveer singh’s acting. I know everyone loved him as Bajirao but when he has to play almost himself, it looked so fake and laborious. All the natural scenes(which Ranbir or even Saif so effortlessly in rom-coms), Ranveer couldn’t do it. To put it clear, he plays a stand up comedian and he keeps saying so many jokes and there is hardly 1-2 which brings smile/laugh for the audience. It is so out of sync. Vaani Kapoor on the other hand has actually performed better and danced great but she was never a great actress and that eventually matters(and she looked bad with horrible hair colors). At least her hardwork is displayed wheareas Ranveer appears lost at many scenes in the movie. I also feel Ranveer will get some fake praises but seriously this is lost performance compared to Vaani. Maybe Bajirao’s success went to his head or he seriously lack in giving natural performances.
Regarding music, 2 songs are fine (Nashe mein and Title track) and rest are not even worth mentioning. The locations are great in 1st half. The supporting actors are hardly there and majority of them are debutants.
Overall, Aditya Chopra has turned out a major misfire and I don’t think it will do well at the boxoffice. Some youngsters might like it to an extent(like I said, if you treat this movie removing the director’s name, you might give it a pass for single watch with flaws) but it will not connect majorly with the audience. I even prefer Band Baaja Baraat as a movie and Ranveer’s performance over this one.
So, I would NOT recommend this movie. Major loss for Ranveer, Aditya and unfortunately might end Vaani’s career.

Band Bajaa Baraat was a very good movie. I dont know why Aditya Chopra he needs to get rid off DDLJ’s legacy. I don’t think there are too many people that really expect something earth shattering from him. The best thing for him would be to make movies more frequently and try different genres (if thats what he wants)

Personally, I expected this. And most probably Aditya needed this. He’s not a fine director but he knows his craft, some confrontational scenes in Mohabbatein are fantastic. The premise of Mohabbatein is ambitious and RNBDJ could have been a fantastic idea if he engaged the audience into creating an older SRK that was the true one over the Rahul caricature. That movie could have really done some serious storytelling by roping in his first movie. No one can deny there is talent. But my gut feel on Aditya is he’s better producing or like Kjo they need a big catastrophe to rethink what kind of films they want to make.

Problem with KJo, Imtiaz and Adi is that they want to experiment inside romantic genre and yet want to be called great.
They all follow Yash Chopra style of filmmaking without realising the genres Yash made in his career- Deewar, Shakti, Mashaal, Silsila, Chandni, Lamhe, Dil to Pagal Hai, Darr, Kala Paththar.
The students of Yash Chopra has lost their way miserably.

I don’t know why anyone would ever think Aditya Chopra was/is actually a great director?? He is a decent director and if you went in with that mindset, this was actually a decent watch. Certainly not a ‘misfire’ IMO. I don’t think we will ever get the Aditya Chopra of DDLJ again…but Befikre was a lot better than his other two crappy films (which is still not saying much).

SRK has all grey hair and grey beard, so is aamir. But, these days Actors dye their beard too and it shines too much and looks odd, it can be noticed in Raees trailer too.

Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor starrer Befikre hit the screens yesterday and showed a decent occupancy throughout the day. According to early estimates, the film has taken a good start. It collected approximately 10.50 crores* at the domestic box office.

This is because his Befikre is a colossally stupid film, a bad comedy with some skin and spit-swapping thrown onto it in a desperate attempt to attract attention.
Despite the montage where lovers — old, blond, bewigged — smooch over the opening credits, what follows is not a youthful or fresh or interesting film.
Like a big budget wolf dressed like a particularly skimpy sheep, this film recycles ideas we’ve seen done to death by Chopra’s own production house: The underdressed carefree tourism of Neal And Nikki melts into the inevitability of Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, itself built upon the second half of Chopra’s DDLJ, with the Dance Of Envy from Dil Toh Pagal Hai thrown in for good measure.

Everything about this movie reminds me of Sooraj Barjayta’s Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. From taking a supposed upcoming superstar to replace the old superstar they’ve worked with in all their past movies, to *trying* (and failing) to be completely different and risqué, to getting a flop film. Ofc no surprise that Aditya Chopra will go back to SRK now and deliver a 150/200 crore hit, something like Prem Ratan and this will keep their companies in the green but they’ll never make another DDLJ or HAHK again…

Time and again we have had instances of people trolling actresses and women on social media. Body shamming girls online has become a trend. So to put an end to all this, actress Sonam Kapoor tried her bit and shared her motivational story. It’s been creating a rage on the internet for now and we also feel that, not only girls even boys should read it once!
Here’s what she shared:
Like every girl, I spent many nights through adolescence leaning into my bedroom mirror, wondering why my body looked nothing like it should.
Why does my belly crease? Why do my arms jiggle? Why am I not fair? Why are there dark patches under my eyes? Why am I taller than boys my age? Do stretch marks ever go away? Will this cellulite stay forever?
“Itni lambi, itni kaali,” a relative casually let slip at a family gathering. “Shaadi kaun karega?” It confirmed that my greatest insecurities were well-founded.
When I was 13, my family took a trip to Goa. Aishwarya Rai was there vacationing with a friend, and we spent an evening with her. I still remember that in blue jeans and a white tank top, she looked like royalty. It baffled me.
I didn’t know much at 15. But I knew I could never look like a Bollywood actress.
Two years and some surprising life decisions later, Sanjay Leela Bhansali cast me in Saawariya.
Despite being on the cusp of actually being a movie star, I didn’t believe I looked the part. I constantly worried that, if asked to dance in a backless choli, rolls of back fat would give me away as an imposter to the industry. Nobody lines up to buy tickets to see cellulite.
So I embarked on a series of unhealthy behaviours. I dieted serially; sometimes South Beach, other times Atkins. Once, in desperation, I tried a diet that had me eating pineapples all day.
I pushed myself too hard at spin classes, did power yoga for hours at a stretch, and developed an unhealthy relationship with food. Some weeks, desperate to drop a couple of kilos, I would simply not eat.
At 18, I went on a date that I thought went well. Later, the boy told our mutual friend that “Sonam is too big”. I didn’t eat for a day.
(Now, thanks to those dumbass teenage decisions, I’m stuck with acidity for life.)
I had assumed that the self-loathing goes away once you’re on billboards at Juhu Beach. I was so wrong. Far from accepting my body once I was making a living as an actress, I was shown new reasons to hate it.
Articles surfaced online, photos zoomed into my arms and thighs, red circles drawn around the slightest hints of a blemish.
When I had a couple of movies out, Shobhaa De wrote a blog post saying that Sonam Kapoor “just doesn’t cut it in the sex appeal stakes”.
People started calling me flat-chested. I’d never been insecure about my C-cup but I got defensive about it on Koffee With Karan.
Eventually, I didn’t even need the tabloids to point out my flaws – I could look at myself on camera monitors and predict what would be criticised. I still remember the frames I hated immediately: the tight silver dress from Bewakoofiyaan, the song with Neil Nitin in Players, the swimsuit and shorts in Aisha, to name a few.
Of course, scrutiny of female bodies isn’t new, or even restricted to celebrities. I mean, raise your hand if you’ve ever been called “healthy” by a relative, or been given unsolicited advice by a friend about how to lose weight.
Raise your hand if you were told to stay out of the sun so you don’t get dark.
Raise your hand if you started hating your body after somebody else told you how.
Here’s what’s gone wrong:
We’ve been taught that women need to be flawless even when our flawlessness is wildly implausible, sexy even when our sexiness is a break from plot. We’re sprinting through Jurassic Park in heels, fighting supervillains in strapless corsets, being stranded on deserted islands for days without a hint of stubble. Real female bodies are so taboo that hair-removal-cream ads show hairless legs even before the cream is applied.
The rules of beauty are strict and it’s almost impossible to win. Anushka Sharma has been skinny-shamed, Sonakshi Sinha has been fat-shamed, Katrina Kaif has been fit-shamed. These are women who are and always have been staggeringly beautiful.
But where there’s a broken system, there’s a solution. The problem is in mainstream culture’s rigid definitions of female beauty. The solution, for me, has been in the women I know.
It’s been a decade since I entered the film industry with my awful self-esteem in tow and, thanks to the female support I’ve had throughout, that self-esteem is in a healthier place now.
I’m lucky to have had my friend and makeup artist Namrata Soni, who sees my face from hyperclose quarters and goes out of her way to make me feel good about it. When I whine about my laugh lines or dark circles, she tells me they’re natural and that’s why they’re beautiful. I have a forcep scar on the right side of my face and my lip lifts up on one side (you notice these things when you’re in front of a camera a lot). When I float the idea of getting them fixed, Namrata reminds me that they make me me.
Instead of letting me interpret my body’s quirks and changes as “flaws”, Namrata helps me celebrate them as unique markers of unique beauty.
I’m lucky to have had my sister and sometimes stylist Rhea, the hottest girl I know. When I’m beating myself up for being too lanky, for not having her curves, she shuts me down and insists I look good in everything she makes me wear. When I start complaining that I don’t look like I did when I was 21, Rhea tells me I look better now.
All the women who’ve championed me have taught me that kind, genuine support can change your friend’s or sister’s or colleague’s life.
(Think of how much better your day is when it starts with a compliment. Think of how easy it is to give that to someone else. Do it every chance you get.)
Today, at 31, I like my body because it’s healthy. I’m done celebrating thinness or flawlessness. I’ve embraced a fit lifestyle, clean eating, and the pursuit of waking up every morning feeling energised. There’s beauty in good health.
The ball is in the media’s court to celebrate fit bodies rather than thin ones, and to know the difference.
I know now that there’s nothing wrong with stretch marks, cellulite, or scars. They’re markers of our growth. There’s beauty in their realness.
And, for the record, I’m not writing this to discourage the pursuit of glamour. Anyone who knows me knows I love feeling pretty – fashion can lend power, makeup can become motivation, a fun accessory can become your source of confidence for the day.
But pursue prettiness for yourself, by your own definitions – not to meet culturally preset notions of “flawless”.
Because flawlessness is a dangerous, high-budget myth, and it’s time we shattered it.
So, for every teen girl leaning into her bedroom mirror, wondering why she doesn’t look like a celebrity: Please know that nobody wakes up like this. Not me. Not any other actress. (Not even Beyonc. I swear.)
Here’s the real deal: Before each public appearance, I spend 90 minutes in a makeup chair. Three to six people work on my hair and makeup, while a professional touches up my nails. My eyebrows are tweezed and threaded every week. There’s concealer on parts of my body that I could never have predicted would need concealing.
I’m up at 6am every day and at the gym by 7:30. I exercise for 90 minutes and, some evenings, again before bed. It’s someone’s full-time job to decide what I can and cannot eat. There are more ingredients in my face packs than in my food. There’s a team dedicated to finding me flattering outfits.
After all that, if I’m still not “flawless” enough, there are generous servings of Photoshop.
I’ve said it before, and I will keep saying it: It takes an army, a lot of money, and an incredible amount of time to make a female celebrity look the way she does when you see her. It isn’t realistic, and it isn’t anything to aspire to.
Aspire, instead, to giving your body as much sleep as it needs. Aspire to finding a form of exercise that’s actually fun for you to do. Aspire to knowing your body and how to live well in it.
Aspire to confidence. Aspire to feeling pretty and carefree and happy, without needing to look any specific way.
And the next time you see a 13-year-old girl gazing wistfully at a blemish-free, shiny-haired Bollywood actress on a magazine cover, bust the myth of flawlessness for her.
Tell her how beautiful she is. Praise her smile or her laugh or her mind or her gait.
Don’t let her grow up believing that she’s flawed, or that there’s anything she’s lacking for looking different from a woman on a billboard. Don’t let her hold herself to a standard that’s too high, even for the women on the billboards.
Tell her I definitely didn’t wake up like this. She won’t either. And that’s totally, completely fine.

Posted it when it appeared in buzzfeed. I think you first create issue (who hasn’t in this world..some kind of insecurity) and solve it because you have wherewithal. Most of the heroines like Kajol, Deepika look dusky when they arrived and now look quite fair. Most of them compete to get roles with one of the bigger male stars; Shorn of talent, most of them rely on looking good. There is no differentiator (You can replace one heroine with other and movie will remain same). Should the heroines blame system, audience or themselves ? I think the blame should be shared. I cannot correct other sbut, I can always correct self. In this case, people around Sonam didn’t instill enough confidence at young age to be self. It is always easy to blame others.

It is not about blaming. It is about how it happens. Firsthand exoerience from a film actress. Sushmita Sen or Aishwarya or Deepika would not have come out with this kind of exposing beauty industry. What goes behind those starry looks? How many people are behind it? How expensive all this?
And that brings to mind the male stars who made 6 packs as the norm with or without steroids.

Befikre grossed around 11 crore nett on Saturday which was limited growth from Friday. The film really needed to do 1 crore nett more to put it in a good position which would have enabled to easily cross 35 crore nett. A film like Dil Dhadakne Do which had a similar audience target of urban youth and also featured Ranveer Singh with ensemble cast had a first day of 9.69 crore nett and then went to 11.55 crore nett on Saturday which was growth of a little under 20% while Befikre the growth is under 10%. The two day business is in the same range as that film but Dil Dhadakne Do also put on 20% on Sunday even though the film was not appreciated. On fair value the collections are higher than Dil Dhadakne Do here as the release was weaker due to demonetization and it would have lost some business but the trend is weaker than that film. The two day business of the film is as follows.
Friday – 10,25,00,000
Saturday 11,25,00,000 appprx
TOTAL – 21,50,00,000 apprx
The film has managed to grow in practically all the circuits but they is that the main multiplex areas like Mumbai, Delhi / UP and East Punjab did not perform the way they should have on Saturday. If these areas had jumped 20% on Saturday it would be a different picture for the film.
Unless the Sunday growth comes in more than expected it will be average weekend collections on a not so good trend and the latter will make it tough on the weekdays.

I dont think it is doing worse than DDD, if second day is 50 lacs lower, first was one cr higher.
And where are those excuses, prevalant in times of DZ, of demonetization etc, this film is more likely to affected of cash crunch than DZ which hardly had any impact due to being pure high-end metro multiplex film.

It is an expensive movie at around a reported 70cr (production plus P&A). It is, for instance, more expensive than most Akshay Kumar movies. Rustom for e.g. had a total budget of 50cr.
So, if it does barely 65cr, it is a flop outright in the domestic market.

The trend is worse than DDD’s and that was a movie that didn’t really receive appreciation. Befikre will probably gross around 65cr lifetime. Which means similar to DZ (another under-performer when you look at the cast).
Had friends going for it last evening and on friday night and from what they were all saying afterwards, the critics and reviews seem really kind.

Back from the movie. I liked it.
Befikre is a fun film, needs a broad minded perspective, so obviously not meant for the hinterlands, or even Chandhni Chowk for that matter. Its really aimed for the NRI audiences, and some select South Bombay types. So am not surprised that the all-India numbers will be low.
Ranvir once again hits the nail on the head with his effortless performance. Vaani is good as well, but her unconventional looks might be a hindrance to some desi purists.
France is a winner, very nicely filmed in every frame!

This movie is miles ahead of ADHM. And this is coming from a person who absolutely detests YashRaj/Dharma production films. Befikre is not a classic or a great film..but as a stand-alone movie…it is good, and after watching all the trailers it looked trashy and boring, so it was a surprising outcome.
The casting was the weak point; Ranveer is not capable of ‘carrying’ a movie of this type…I feel a younger SRK would’ve been good here or even Ranbir would’ve been a better choice. The actress was good, but again this film would’ve benefited with stronger casting. Overall, it was predictable but still watchable which usually is not the case for a Aditya Chopra film for me. Easily his second best directed film after DDLJ.

IMHO, Ranveer carried the role perfectly. The Delhi ka launda vibe was evident, and the theatre I watched in had people laughing at his antics throughout. I was actually surprised that critics had trashed his performance here.
But all said and done, the movie is a contemporary western romance with all the slutting thrown in, not a traditional desi or even crossover types we have seen recently. So it would not find too many takers among desi audiences.

Pretty bad. And the fact that they chose 2 mediocre lead-actors itself is pretty bad [That Aditya Roy is grating on the nerves]. NITYA was a PHENOMENON in OKK. Rarely, in the past 10 years have I seen an actress project a vulnerability with her eyes and expressions the way Nitya projects. They have all the right names: Gulzar, ARR, and Shaad Ali. But I still suspect a very ‘modern for the sake of being modern’ vibe here.
Having watched OKK thrice already, there is no freaking reason to watch this. Pretty disappointing that ARR has just recycled the music from OKK.
Staying miles away from this.
A very good casting choice is that of Nasser replacing Prakash Raj.

I like the casting. Seems fresh. Also shot very well. My ony worry that lightweight romances without some emotional connect doesn’t do so well. Befikre is a good example…this movie is also in the same terrain. There is hardly any conflict in the movie. It’s good to watch but nothing beyond that. The music is wow though. Nitya menon was very good but shraddha can match her charm if not her acting.

Befikre had an average weekend of 34.50 crore nett apprx but the sort of trend such multiplex films need over the weekend was not there. There was growth on Saturday and Sunday but not the sort which would make you confident of a good hold over the weekdays. The weekend should have been around 10% higher from the opening it took. The numbers are fine from a commercial point of view as weekend business is enough to push into plus zone. The problem is the big pre release revenue has come because its an Aditya Chopra film but if the film does not hold and find appreciation then revenues for television, digital etc become hard to recover for whoever paid. The collections are also pretty good genre wise as the only rom-com above it for the weekend is Tanu Weds Manu Returns and that was not the regular rom com as set in real India which gives more commercial value and more relatable characters.
The main issue is the film is directed by Aditya Chopra so expectations are bigger but here the collections are little less than similar types made by Imtiaz Ali (Tamasha) and Zoya Akhtar (Dil Dhadakne Do) who are directors who just have a big name in the media without a track record while Aditya Chopra is a genuine box office director as per track record. Basically when a genuine director is getting numbers similar to media directors with similar films it means the choice of subject has gone wrong somewhere. The weekend business of the film is as follows.
Friday – 10,25,00,000
Saturday 11,50,00,000
Sunday 12,50,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 34,25,00,000 apprx
The best business for the film has in the Delhi / NCR area and Mumbai city and Pune. Bangalore and Hyderabad were also good but the rest of the country is not really up to the mark.

Befikre has not really done that well Worldwide as though India is fair, the Overseas markets have not done too well. The film has done well in Gulf despite a 18 certificate and being banned in Kuwait with business set to be around $800,000 but the other markets have not fared well. US / Canada is $550,000 on a big release while United Kingdom is around £175,000. This will take the Overseas business to around $2 million which is same range as Dishoom and Baar Baar Dekho. It will be the 11th best opening overseas this year. The Overseas business is well short of Aditya Chopra’s last film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which had weekend business of $3.42 million. It was a Shahrukh Khan starrer but was eight years back and releases are much wider now. The Gross figures in India are 47.50 crore apprx. The top worldwide grossers for the opening weekend in 2016 are as follows.
1. Sultan – 210.12 crore
2. Fan – 113.31 crore
3. M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story – 108.38 crore
4. Housefull 2 – 98.76 crore

As this article in The Guardian points out the practice to play National Anthem in cinema halls in India was first introduced after the 1962 India-China war.
Those were the times of high national fervour, with India facing a mightier enemy at its borders. But then the National Anthem was played at the end of the movies. The moviegoers, ignorant to the diktat, would simply file out of the cinema hall soon after ‘The End’ flashed on the screens, and perhaps this was why the practice slowly faded and was eventually discontinued, until 2003.

On trending it’s way worse than Pink let alone Piku (or some of the other small films that have fallen in this range). BOI have throughout pretended it’s a limited audience for this sort of film. That’s of course bull and I won’t repeat my older comments in this regard. In literal terms it’s falling way short of Piku and barely catching Pink. All these films of course started much lower. You don’t get the star initial to make up for it later! Even if BOI pretend not to know what is completely obvious. DZ could have easily done 80-100. WOM wasn’t comparable of course but duh… that’s true for any film that doesn’t work or that underperforms. Nonetheless already calling Befikre a semi hit and DZ a flop is plain silly. But yeah Kahaani 2 is a total flop.

I accounted for that.. but it’s adding negligibly at this point.. and there’s nothing to refute. A film that started stronger than Pink or Piku or whatever but ends up only at the level of Pink and way behind Piku has some explaining to do! And let’s not get into truly silly stuff like ‘WOM was better for those films’ or ‘why were you expecting 300 crores from DZ?’ or ‘it rained that day’ or what have you. SRK fans always have a million excuses in these situations (including ‘oh he’s decided to stop doing blockbuster type films! yeah after he didn’t get the desired results in several attempts!). I’ll just add this. Barring his very early days SRK has never ever been very successful doing the different at any end of the production spectrum (and relative to the expectations of each project) with the exception of CDI. Between KHKN and the present CDI is probably the only example of a proper hit. Everything else is disappointing to various degrees if not an outright failure. there are only so many excuses one can make. Again SRK fans often try to present even slightly different films from him as art house efforts but even by those standards these films don’t work (though they’re sometimes ok on pure budgeting.. not because the audience loved them). Incidentally I wouldn’t have had an issue if DZ had touched a 100 or whatever. Whatever my sense of SRK might be I am for or against films generally based on their politics not otherwise. Secondly it’s not about debates on blogs like this. When OSO worked no one ‘debated’ it, when CE worked again no one ‘debated’ it. If Raees works in a big way no one’s going to argue. If you have to get into the minutiae, specially with a star the media/trade is generally kind to, you’ve already lost the plot (pun intended). I just said that calling DZ a flop as Rediff did is going too far. But for this kind of claim to even be minimally plausible there must be some ambiguity about the film’s box office. Again no one says CDI is a flop!

and let me add this here.. it’s easy to taunt Aamir as many do.. but it’s not easy to get a success out of a different or somewhat risky commercial film, let alone do it as consistently as he has for many years. When even a poorly trending Talaash does 90 that’s the star’s credibility. And again this isn’t a SRK v Aamir thing for me. As always I’m highlighting the utter hypocrisy of some. If SRK has been doing fine for a dozen years or so Aamir must be in a different profession.

I completely agree with everything Satyam says here about DZ BO. Rediff is obviously not a great source, but if they call it a flop, then there is an ambiguity in the BO circles. Komal Nahata is going to call it an average film probably, and to me, that is where it stands.
The film started with some clear advantages. It was an out and out multiplex film, and hence somewhat insulated from demonetization. Many of us knew SRK was in a supporting part, but he was projected as the lead in the promos. He went out of his way to promote the film, and that bore results too. The film opened quite well for its genre and stayed steady for almost one and half weeks. But the film saw absolutely no growth from there on. Ideally, it should have gained from that big early momentum SRK gave it, and gone on from strength to strength. There isn’t any tangible craze. No one is talking about it. Not the audience, not the media and not even SRK.
That’s not the trajectory of a hit film. When a film captures popular imagination, the mainstream media picks up the story, the BO coverage does not stop, the collections show a healthy growth.
I have expressed how the film didn’t work for me, but even if I had liked it, I would have been surprised how at how the WOM is tepid at best. Yes, the film is technically a success at the BO, given its low budget and SRK not taking his fee etc. But that is not a measure of a hit film really.

Most countries have double taxation avoidance agreement. Suppose I am US citizen living in India. I will pay taxes in India. I have to file taxes in US (you have to file taxes) as well but I will get credit for taxes paid in India.

Didnt like KWK with Salman. Felt KJO wasnt confortable with him. This is the problem with Salman . He doent bother about the questions. He will say whatever he wants to say irrespective of what he is being asked. KJO was cautious while asking him anything.

Oh, yes – Aamir’s ‘daughters’ Sanya and Fatima claim he has no friends but them and we can totally believe that’s what it looks like because the actor, who has built a formidable reputation for perfection, has dedicated the last year or so to Dangal. Few in Bollywood commit so entirely to a role as Aamir Khan does and even for him, the Dangal process has been extraordinary. Part of preparing for the film involved intensive training in wrestling and learning the Haryanvi dialect, in which Sanya and Fatima trained with him.
That they are friends and not just colleagues is fairly clear from the banter on Koffee With Karan, including accusations from the two actresses of Aamir trying to ‘steal’ their answers to win the hamper in the Rapid Fire.

Befikre had a normal fall of 50% om Monday from Friday as it grossed 5 crore nett apprx. It is a fair collection but it may be bumped up a minor holiday for Eid-E-Milad and if so then it will mean a higher then normal drop. The holiday was in most states while a few states will have that holiday today. The four day total of the film is 39.25 crore nett apprx. The holds are best in the mass pockets be it the Central India territories of CPCI or UP, these places have fallen around 40% from Friday. It could be due to that holiday factor but that will be known over the next few days. The hold is better than the weekend trend suggested but again it will be the next few days that will tell the real value. The first four day business of the film is as follows.
Friday – 10,25,00,000
Saturday 11,50,00,000
Sunday 12,50,00,000
Monday 5,00,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 39,25,00,000 apprx
The film has grossed 13.50 crore nett in Mumbai, 8 crore in Delhi / UP and 4.25 crore nett in East Punjab over the first four days. These are the best performing circuits but the bext holds on Monday have come in CP Berar and CI. .

Actually this year has been notably quiet and not much of buzz created to even step out to the theatres. I just realized this year is going to be a personal record of sorts for me with only 2 outings at theatre for a Hindi movie. There was Sultan in early July and the next one hopefully is going to be Dangal (provided reviews don’t point towards a boring screenplay).
Actually even DVD watches have been far and few with just 2 or 3. Majority on TV like Piku, Pink, Neerja, Airlift, Housefull 3 etc.
So great savings this year!

The year has been a disaster till date (till date because Dangal may rescue it somewhat) but there have been a couple of films that have shone. One is Sultan and the other is The Jungle Book, these two films are the only real hits of the year from universal box office to universal appreciation across the country. The Jungle Book grossed around 188 crore nett in a twenty week run. The run was more than double what the biggest Hindi films achieve.
The India GBOC of the film at 255 crore is more than the Worldwide GBOC of all Hindi releases barring Sultan. That includes films like Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom, M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. After a huge box office run the film has now taken television by storm by easily smashing all records for a Hollywood film. In fact like the box office it has fared better than many big Hindi films. The film has achieved the sixth highest rating of films premiered on television this year while it is 5th highest of films released this year. The ratings for 2016 are below and show impressions which is basically the number of television sets that viewed the films on their respective premieres.

2. Sultan – 1,13,10,000
3. The Flying Jatt – 98,43,000
4. Dishoom – 95,44,000
5. Housefull 3 – 78,16,000
6. The Jungle Book – 75,51,000

9. Sanam Re – 56,66,000
10. Bajirao Mastani – 54,76,000
The Jungle Book is also the biggest Hollywood blockbuster in India in terms of inflation adjusted figures as it beat the 180 crore nett adjusted figure of Titanic released in 1998.

Censor chief Pahlaj Nihalani, who had quite an issue with James Bond and Monica Bellucci kissing in Spectre, is surprisingly okay with Befikre’s PDA. In an interaction with a leading daily, Pahlaj came out in his defense and said, ” “We shortened Ranveer Singh’s butt shot quite a lot. Right now it’s just a glimpse, no more. What’s wrong with it? He is alone with his girlfriend in a room. They are doing what couples do when they are alone. Why is a butt shot objectionable? We’ve allowed butt shots in some recent Hollywood films. Also in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail.”
Not just that, Nihalani has a huge explanation over the smooching spree in Befikre! “See, unlike Ae Dil Hai Mushkil , Spectre or Tamasha where the kisses were done in lengthy shots, in Befikre the kisses are scattered and largely fleeting and all over the place. They are part of the narration. As a filmmaker, I know what can be cut without hampering the flow of the narrative. In Befikre there is no way we could cut the kisses without interrupting the flow of the story. Aditya Chopra has treated the kisses as part of the story. If we removed the kisses we’d be hampering the storytelling.”
Oh, by the way, Pahlaj also explained, the kisses would have been curtailed if needed. “We’ve cut all the close-ups of the kisses and the climactic kiss has been reduced by 50 per cent. The rest we couldn’t cut for apprehension of being accused of creative interference.”

Am really happy at the success of The Jungle Book. The movie was the best of the year along with Airlift and Sultan so far and i beleive its success is more extraordinary than the other two which are also the genre’s biggest HITS.

Aamir finally gives nod to Rakesh Sharma biopic – Saare Jahan Se Acha!
Aamir Khan’s Rakesh Sharma biopic will reportedly be called Saare Jahaan Se Achcha. The film will feature Aamir playing Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to go to space.
Aamir Khan is known to be working on any one film at time. But ahead of Dangal’s release, if reports are to be believed, the perfectionist Khan has already said “Okay” to not one but three scripts. It’s the first time the actor is shooting for three projects back to back in quick succession.
While there’s Advait Chauhan’s Secret Superstar where Aamir is playing a cameo, there’s also Yash Raj Films’ Thugs of Hindostan slated for a Diwali 2018 release. Directed by Dhoom 3 director Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film will also star Amitabh Bachchan.
Following these, he will begin shooting for his Rakesh Sharma biopic. The actor will be playing Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma who was the first Indian to go to space.
A source was quoted by DNA as saying, “He has already signed the Rakesh Sharma biopic which will roll on right after he completes Thugs.”
The movie is going to be produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s new production company RSVP and will be directed by director Mahesh Mathai who had previously directed the 1999 film Bhopal Express, based on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.
Now, the makers have picked up the perfect title for the film.
“Since it’s a biopic on the astronaut’s life, the team wanted a name that will not only suit the biographical film but also have a patriotic feeling attached. They had two names in mind – Salute and Saare Jahaan Se Achcha and they are going ahead with the latter. It makes more sense,” the source said.
To put things in context, when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked Rakesh Sharma how India looked from outer space, the astronaut had said, “Saare Jahaan Se Achcha.” Therefore, there couldn’t possibly be a better title for the film.

Good it was 1984 and Rakesh Sharma said ‘Saare Jahan se Acha (Hindustan hamara)’ and if it was 2016, Bhakts would have demanded why he didn’t say ‘Bharat Maata ki Jai’. Also, the title of the movie would have been ‘Bharat Maata ki Jai’.
I’m sure some of them will boycott this movie for its title! 🙂

It does look good on paper. But from a wider perspective, this was a Soviet space program and it also was 23 years after the first man in space. But it does seem that a film can be made out of any kind of achievement with any glimpse of patriotic zeal in overdrive..
On a side note, re-visited The Right Stuff last week and it is a well-made film, indeed.

We had the debacle Fan, which only seemed to be an ego-massage for the Bollywood badshah, but audiences were clearly irked by the flimsy flick. It didn’t help that Fan was release right after Dilwale, which saw our favourite couple Kajol and SRK reunite and had gotten audiences all excited. The promise of the reunion fell flat and the film was a critical and commercial disappointment.
Even the most dedicated SRKians wondered if Shahrukh could get back on track. In this atmosphere, a Raees release would have met with a more cautious approach by viewers, who’d begun to believe that their beloved icon was content churning out below-par films.
Enter Dear Zindagi – an indie film, barely costing Rs 26 crore, where Shahrukh does an ‘extended cameo’. People took notice. We got to see SRK looking his age, not doing his usual mainstream romances, mentoring Alia Bhatt’s character – basically actually acting. ‘Shahrukh is back!’ fans said on various social media and then came the trailers and first looks of Raees.
And let’s not forget that Raees was initially slated to clash with Salman Khan’s Sultan on Eid, but instead got delayed and is facing the far lesser threat of Kaabil next year.
Had it not been for Dear Zindagi, the only screen presence SRK would have gotten this year would have been the underwhelming flick Fan. Dear Zindagi not only kept the star’s face fresh in the audience’s minds, but also served as a safe buffer between a box office dud and what seems to be a real money-maker, Raees.

Lol. How can anyone plan such a thing? Raees was supposed to release in Eid and DZ was already shot in Mar/April this year and supposed to release in November. Once Raees was avoiding the clash they had no dates in Oct and Dec and Nov was DZ so they went to Jan.

Befikre went down on Tuesday as collections fell 25-30% from the previous day and the film went to low levels. The Monday numbers were decent but was due to the minor holiday for Eid-E-Milad which seems to have boosted collections by 10-15% on Monday going by the business on Tuesday. The film grossed in the 3.50-3.75 crore nett range on Tuesday which is a low collection. There is no major competition this week but this drop makes a real dent in the chances of the film put up solid second week numbers. The collections fell over with bigger falls in areas that got benefit of the mini holiday on Monday. In places like Rajasthan the holiday was on Tuesday so collections did not drop there. The first five day business of the film is as follows.

Monday 5,25,00,000
Tuesday – 3,75,00,000 apprx

So expected, after 3 blockbusters, Aditya Chopra delivers his 1st flop. He had a great track record and now ruined. Strangely when Sooraj Barjatya made 4th film without Salman, he had a flop in MPKDH. Similarly when Farah Khan tried to move away from SRK, she gave Tees Maar Khan. Karan managed small hit in SOTY and ADHM but his success level has lowered.
There was a question in BOI decade back. If Karan/Aditya Chopra are reason for SRK’s popularity or Srk’s popularity letting their movies to be successful. They answered the day both these directors start making movies without SRK we’ll know their real worth. I think all 3 – Karan, Aditya and Farah has answered this question by not taking SRK in their films.
SRK is not gonna work in Farah’s or Karan’s next but he has announced Aditya’s next in 2017 year end. Hopefully its back to form Adi and not of Befikre kind.

Q. You have said many times that films like Queen, Kahaani, Neerja, Piku and Pink have not been appreciated but just look at the trend at the box office they do 10-20 times the opening day business..
A. That is irrelevant, the lower you start the bigger chance you have of putting up a higher lifetime against day one ratio. Appreciation comes through getting footfalls across the country and getting enough people to like that film which can then result in longevity by having a few good years on television circuit. After this if the film has the correct characters it can even be turned into a franchise. For the films you have mentioned the correct word is overrated rather than public appreciation.
Q. With Raees and Kaabil coming a day apart now does it mean they can open better as one film will be solo and the other will have first day on a big holiday?
A. Obviously the opening will be bit better for both films now than if they had come in the same day but its still a clash and screen issues are going to be there. The only difference is that there is no choice for the audience on one day. A release on the day after each other does not mean the clash is averted.
Q. Will Dangal beat Sultan and be the widest release of the year ?
A. There is a dubbed version of the film and with that it may be the widest but in Hindi alone it will probably be less than Sultan.
Q. The fans of younger stars like Ranbir and Ranveer are supportive of each other films but why do Salman and Shahrukh fans fight even though bit actors are against this and said many times?
A. There are no fights, it may be there on the internet but there are arguments over many things on net. As for the actors being against it, its good to say but if it all stoped it will probably men stardom going down. As for the younger stars they probably have not managed to acquire a strong fan base yet.

on the first question their response has really plumbed new depths of stupidity. Most films around the world that go on to win Oscars and so on have that sort of opening and trending and final gross. They don’t start out (or end up) like the Avengers! To take a current and recent example Villeneuve’s acclaimed and successful Siccario had a lifetime gross of 47m. Arrival being a sci-fi deal has done 75m so far. There are Oscar winners that do 100-150m or a bit more and those are super successes, specially the latter. And these often enjoy good trending for a much longer time because of all the awards hype (not just the Oscars). And even these are hardly comparable to other important grossers out there. Take the Revenant. A top star in a more accessible adventure genre. The film did 183m but then Mission Impossible 5 did close to 200! And otherwise blockbuster type movies do at least 350 and go all the way unto 630 or so (Avengers or whatever). Consider the spread. In India all of these movies are compared the same way. So BOI would probably attack some of those award winners for appealing to limited audiences. But let’s go further than this. Many of the greatest movies in history are art house films or at least very non-commercial films that very few people see even when their ‘big hits’. The BOI stupidity is just breath-taking. Even otherwise their responses are usually childish and illiterate.

BOI is now overdone with ‘N’ number of articles to prove that likes of PIKU and PINK are not appreciated movies. Success of these movies are not digesting to BOI and they are coming up with same points every other day since 2-3 months now.
So basically BOI means to say that likes of Golmaal, Chupke Chupke, Baato Baato Mein, Angoor, Padosan, Anand , Chashme Badoor … etc are trashy movies and not got any appreciation. These movies don’t have any significance in Indian cinema history and these sort of movies should never been made at first place.
BOI wants that only big budget masala movies with bankable stars should be made. No one should do any experiments with rich content and non bankable stars. And if someone do that and even got success commercially, BOI will trash it left right and center.

Complete disgrace. There has been other songs copied and shown with some dignity. With this one, they’ve taken a song which original was not meant to be trashy and turned it into a trashy song.
If you take something like aap jaisa koi from qurbaani and show it like this, that’s fine. But don’t take something like title songs of qurbaani and show it with trashy dance moves.

My thoughts:
Twenty-one years ago, Aditya Chopra made his directorial debut: Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge! The film is a personal favourite, was an unqualified success (still running today at Maratha Mandir), and has aged surprisingly well.
Aditya’s descent from making classics (actually that shouldn’t be a plural) was rapid. Mohabbatein was painful other than the scenes with the primary trio. Whilst DDLJ had a host of great tracks, Mohabbatein’s only memorable song is Lata’s Humko Humhi Se Churalo (the nightingale once again bringing redemption to an otherwise poor movie). Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was so unwatchable that I couldn’t continue past the interval. And with Befikre Aditya has once again proved that his debut should have also been his swansong.
The first half is inane. The movie attempts to be edgy in a Before Sunrise kind of way (unsurprising given that the film is apparently inspired by a French release) but Aditya Chopra is exceedingly stale (whilst shouting from the rooftops that he has made something bold and daring).
Ranveer plays the world’s unfunniest (which is likely unintentional) stand-up comedian; the scenes where he is on-stage are cringeworthy, unable to even induce a chuckle from the real-life audience. He has always been fun to watch in interviews, but perhaps he is now past his expiry date (whilst he has had box-office success, Ranbir is undoubtledy the ‘actor’ of the two). Vaani meanwhile plays a poorly written French-born Indian who is unnecessarily mean to her parents (hard to resist an unflattering comparison with Gauri Shinde’s sensitive creation Kaira in Dear Zindagi). Shyra is meant to be an incredibly screwed-up, complicated character but I got the feeling that that’s what we are supposed to believe rather than what we feel (if I were feeling kinder I might suggest that Shyra WANTS people to think she’s more messed up than she is, but that would be supposing Aditya Chopra to be far more insightful than he clearly is).
Whilst Karan’s nods to his earlier works was amusing (cute even) in ADHM, Aditya’s hearkenings of DDLJ only induce a sad shake of the head. His climax resembles (and is as bad as) the post-millenium movies of father’s banner (namely Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai). However unlike those two unimpressive films that both at least had decent soundtracks (leave alone the dizzying musical heights that the Chopra banner was once famous for) Befikre has consistently forgettable songs.
There were two ‘real’ moments in this travesty. Firstly the looks that Shyra’s mother gives her; here is a relationship (and indeed the one between Shyra’s parents) that we might want to know better but sadly never do. Secondly, when Dharam tells Shyra that it makes him sick to the stomach when he sees her with another man; we sense the film is finally ready to errupt but instead the scene fizzles out. Despite the poor writing, Vaani performance is passable though yet again a comparison to earlier Chopra leads will not flatter her.
The ridiculous climax, where inanity descends into mild hilarity only proves that whilst Aditya can just about manage slapstick, he’s not got the skills to make a relationship drama or even a pleasant romantic comedy anymore. Let alone the epic heights reached by Imtiaz Ali in Tamasha, Aditya cannot even muster up a watchable and relatable film like his one-time assistant Karan Johar. Karan’s cinema attained adulthood this year, eighteen years after his debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Sadly, twenty-one years after his own spectacular debut (which perhaps explains my own tendency to repeatedly litter this piece with unfair comparisons) Aditya Chopra, rather than coming of age, has only regressed.

Thanks Salim, good review. Many of the points you’ve mentioned I too felt the same, very similar thoughts for this movie. This was a colossal misfire by Aditya Chopra.

“They both are also favourites of Raj Kumar Hirani and one waits to see if the filmmaker chips in to help avert this clash,” a Bollywood insider wonders, “He has made Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai with Dutt, while with Khan he has made 3 Idiots and PK. (with Sanjay Dutt in there as well). Maybe if he has a chat with them, one of the two films would move to a different date.”
While one waits to see that happen, the first step would be for director Omung Kumar to bring Bhoomi on floors.

On another note as a year end analysis, I am finding Siddharth Malhotra impressive. Watched him on TV recently and if he gets the right movies he is the one to watch out for. Good looks, built, voice, temperament – he needs to go full on masala like varun because all this ‘no strings attached’ Hollywood sex model is not definition of love as far as Indian masses is concerned.
He has been rightly cast in Bang Bang Reloaded…and hope he turns out better than Mr stale Roshan boy…err no more a boy !

2016 Sets New Record But Unwanted Record

The year is coming to an end and in one way it can be said to be record breaking but its record breaking in the way no one would like to see. Last year (2015) was the first time in its 100 year plus history that there was over 200 Hindi films released in the calendar year. This year it has gone better as not only has the 200 film release mark been surpassed but another record has been set with more than 200 FLOP films. The tally so far for 2016 is 218 Hindi films with three weeks to go and the flop count is 203. Only fifteen Hindi films have done AVERAGE business or better. It is no doubt going to be the first year ever as far as successful films are concerned.
If we go back twenty five years to 1991 there were 144 Hindi releases and 28 films did average or better business. That is close to 20% success ratio compared to 7% this year. If we go back another 25 years the ratio gets even better. Not only are the successes minimal but there is only one Hindi grosser (Sultan) also, it would not be so bad if the ratio is so low but there are 4 or 5 films which were grossers but that is not the case.
It is true that out of the 218 films its only 50 at best that have some sort of awareness therefore some chance at the box office but people still seem to be taking a chance when in this era there is little hope for those 150 plus films to find an audience. There has to be bottom somewhere down the line as can it get worse than a 7% success ratio when it was over 50% in the 70’s. This is also happening when the releases look better on paper year after year. 2016 was looking better than 2015 and now 2017 does looks better than 2016 but hopefully the ratio will not be 7% this time next year.

The Jungle Book had a 22 week run across theatres in India while no Hindi film has even managed to last ten weeks in the theatres this year. The fifth week figures of the film are the third highest ever after legendary films like 3 Idiots and Gadar. The sixth week goes even better with second highest figures of all time after Gadar. This film shows what a real content film can do as acceptance comes from all over as compared to Hindi content films which limit themselves to a minority audience and are talked about more than what they actually achieve. The first day to lifetime ratio is also more than the Hindi content films be it Neerja, Pink or Piku and here its not starting from a poor 4-5 crore level but more than double that. The lifetime collections of The Jungle Book are as follows.

Befikre Struggles On Weekdays

Befikre struggled on the weekdays after managing average business for the first four days. The big drop in business on Tuesday sealed its fate and now even though there is not much competition this week its not really going to benefit the film. The first week collections are around 48.50 crore nett after a 34.50 crore nett weekend. So even with a decent Monday the film could only add around 40% on the weekdays. The first week collections are the 11th highest of the year behind films like Baaghi and Dishoom and while Befikre had Ranveer Singh those films also featured young stars like Tiger Shroff and Varun Dhanwan. Despite the added advantage of a director like Aditya Chopra, the film still collected less than those films.
The problem was always going to the genre as rom-coms only appeal to the youth and that too urban youth so if you get appreciation from this sector you may go on to do 85-90 crore nett though 75 crore nett is still the highest for the genre. But if the target audience does not take to it than that minority audience dwindles further and this is what has happened here. Even if the film had worked it may have done 90 crore, lets push it and say100 crore nett which would be excellent for the genre but still would not be big number for an Aditya Chopra film because of the prior blockbusters. A big director has to so a universal film as only that way there is a chance of meeting expectations.
