A few small releases, the rest of the box office

There were a few new Hindi films released today (Fri 16th) like Gang Of Littles, Sarthak, Shor Se Shuruaat and Wajah Tum Ho with latter taking a so so opening of around 15-20%. The others could not find an audience in whatever early shows they had. Shor Ke Shuruaat has been given better show times in the evenings for some reason but it will still be a washout. Wajah Tum Ho is mainly a film for multiplexes and single screens outside the big centres and with the cash crunch hitting these places it does make things difficult as its not a big budget film that many will come for in this situation. So taking this into consideration a 20% opening is not bad. The early morning occupancy is better than sequels of so called much appreciated films like Rock On 2 and Khaani 2.

The biggest problem for films like Wajah Tum Ho is growth so you really have to open well rather than middling starts. The competition for Wajah Tum Ho will come from Rogue One – A Star Wars Story which will get better collections than Wajah Tum Ho in multiplexes of the big centres eventually though its opening is lower. Star Wars is not much of a brand in India like in the West and the film has only been released in English and on around 600 screens.

It will be a word of mouth story for Rogue One – A Star Wars Story in India unlike markets like US and UK where it will take a flyer.

Wajah Tum Ho had a low opening day of 2 crore nett. The film is a low budget film and even the start was not too bad and if it had picked up en the evening it could have done around 3 crore which would have been a decent start for this film. The problem was that business in multiplexes was lower in the evening at some places and multiplexes in big cities have recorded very dull collections. The business of multiplexes in smaller centres is better and so are the single screens in these centres but they are still below average. Demonetization would have affected in these places. It will be a struggle for the film from here on as with multiplexes not really tending on Friday means growth will be limited.

The other releases like Gang Of Littles, Sarthak and Shor Se Shuruaat were washouts as expected. Rogue One – A Star Wars Story has also fared poorly with around 1 crore nett on day one. Despite being a huge event film in the West there is little brand value in India as they have never found an audience and that is reflected in the collections. It should get a bigger audience over the weekend but the film is going nowhere. The collections are lower than Star Wars – the Force Awakens released around the same time last year.

Befikre saw a drop in collections on its second Friday as it grossed around 1.50-1.75 crore nett taking its total to around 50.25 crore nett plus. The collections have dropped 85% from the first day which will mean a 80% drop will be there over the second weekend. The drops have come all over with the North holding a little better but that is normal as generally collections in Delhi / UP and East Punjab hold up better. the weekend should see growth at multiplexes and the film could do a weekend of 5.5-6 crore nett. The lifetime business of the film is unlikely to reach 60 crore nett as Dangal is releasing next week and Befikre will hardly have any collections in week three.

The holdover releases like Dear Zindagi and Kahaani 2 are also collecting at low levels now with Dear Zindagi at around 20 lakhs nett on its fourth Friday and Kahaani at around 30 lakhs nett on its third Friday.

Dear Zindagi has done well and will finish at around 66-67 crore nett with Overseas being a big bonus while Kahaani 2 is poor and will finish at around 32 crore nett. Both the sequels Force 2 and Kahaani 2 will finish with similar business of a little over 30 crore nett.

  6. The exhibitors and cinema owners had taken the decision voluntarily after the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (IMPPA) announced a ban on Pakistani artistes and technicians working in India.
Sources in the industry told PTI that most of the cinema owners, exhibitors and importers of Indian films had got panicky after Pakistani films including old and fresh releases and even latest Hollywood movies failed to fill up the halls.
“Plus in recent weeks several Indian films have been released while everyone is eagerly anticipating the release of Aamir Khan’s “Dangal”,” a source said.
One source, however, said some cinema owners were still apprehensive of any backlash from religious parities or groups once they resumed screening of Indian films and have asked for protection if required.
“A private media group is presently trying to import and release “Dangal” in Pakistan,” the source added.
Lashari said that first unreleased Indian films would be screened after which they would have negotiations with Indian distributors to continue the import of movies into Pakistan.

  8. Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 trailer to be attached with Aamir Khan’s Dangal

With the massive success in 2016, Akshay Kumar will be ringing in 2017 with satirical courtroom drama Jolly LLB 2. The trailer has been released on digital platforms today and it’s going to jolly ride. We have now learned that Jolly LLB 2 trailer will be attached to Aamir Khan‘s upcoming film Dangal.

According to a source, as Dangal is releasing this week and happens to be the much-awaited film, a simple call was taken and both Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar were quite fine with that as the trailer will reach wider audience. The source added that the timing couldn’t have been better for Jolly LLB 2 as Dangal releases around 50 days prior to its own arrival at the box office. This will give Akshay the right amount of time to kick start the promotional campaign and then gain leverage from Dangal playing in theaters.

The source further added that both the films cater to the family audiences and have a similar rustic charm to them. While Dangal is set in Haryana and is a biopic, Jolly LLB 2 is a satirical comedy based in Lucknow. Both Aamir and Akshay are playing the ordinary characters who end up doing something extraordinary despite all the constraints. Both films are attached to reality and hence it would be pretty much a smooth viewing for audiences, whether Jolly LLB 2 promo arrives at the beginning or interval of Dangal.

The trailer of Jolly LLB 2 showcases Akshay Kumar as a lawyer who dares to take on the State. Produced by Fox Star Studios and directed by Subhash Kapoor, Jolly LLB 2 stars Huma Qureshi, Annu Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla is slated to release on 10th February 2017.

Sperm panties to vaginal cameras: Kangana Ranaut’s SHOCKING statements on alleged affair with Hrithik Roshan!
    Sun, 18 Dec 2016-05:03pm , DNA

“……’I don’t believe in keeping sperm panties as tokens’

“Is it essential for us to save the memories of our love affairs whether they’re sperm stained panties or gifts that were given to us by a lover as potential evidence for a future when he’s trying to escape or say no? If that is feminism then I’m not a feminist. If it’s feminism to not allow a prerogative of a man saying no and if it’s a prerogative of just a woman to say no, then I’m not a feminist, a no means a no. If any individual wants nothing to do with me and feels ashamed of me or wants to get rid of me, the only thing I’m going to do for that individual is say goodbye!”

“Friends think I should keep vaginal cameras”

“For me it was a love story and it was very hard to deal with. Today it still hurts when people call it the ugliest scandal or ugliest fight because that’s just not me. My friends joke that I should have vaginal cameras so that every time someone penetrates I should have evidence.”

“I feel naked in front of the whole world”

the thing is I cannot help if I have fire in my belly. To make myself worthy of an individual or my lover, I have crossed mental landscapes, human landscapes and all sort of distances covered. But what happens when these worlds meet and you are faced of extreme brutality? I am saying this because people have seen how I have put up a strong front to fight but nobody has seen what I feel as a woman, when I am subjected to that kind of brutality. The letters that I might have written, which were brutally exposed to the world. How did I feel as a human being because every letter that you’ve written to your lover holds a lot of vulnerability? You are exposing part of your soul or yourself, not to the world but to an individual. I felt extremely naked in front of the world. I cried for nights in my room. People make fun of me. But I never answered to that brutality in the same spirit. I think that makes me see myself as a winner…..”

  14. Why Aamir Khan’s Dangal won’t break Salman Khan’s Sultan record
    Aamir Khan and Salman Khan

Sultan’s opening day collection was Rs 36.54 cr; Dangal’s first-day figures are expected to be approximately Rs 30 cr

The day of reckoning is upon Bollywood. In a few days from now, the last release of the year — Dangal — hits screens. In a season starved of good openers at the box-office, all eyes are on how well the Aamir Khan-starrer open in order to get rid of some deficit right away.

“The film that Aamir would be challenging for the honours of the highest opening day would be Salman Khan’s Sultan,” says a trade source, “That film had brought in Rs 36.54 crore on Wednesday, the day before Eid. That was massive by all accounts. In terms of release, there are no worries for Aamir. He is arriving solo and doesn’t have any competition. Yes, it is on a regular Friday though. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t benefit from the Christmas holiday either, since it falls on Sunday. However, audiences wait for an Aamir Khan film in this season, which should help with the popularity factor.”

“It would be quite tough though for Dangal to come anywhere close to the Rs 30 cr-mark. All his films have posted lower then Rs 30 cr on day one. Except Dhoom:3 which is a franchise and was a star-studded affair. For Dangal to surpass Sultan, the need of the hour would be for it to bring on the euphoria and craze of Dhoom: 3. Aamir’s films traditionally open on an excellent, albeit, not a record-breaking note.

PK (2014) started with Rs 27 crore on its opening day. Talaash (2012) was Rs 13 crore while 3 Idiots (2009) was just Rs 12.5 crore,” our trade expert comments, “Yes, Dhoom:3 was mind-blowing with Rs 36.22 crore and that too on a regular Friday.”

Says an Aamir loyalist, “Aamir’s films may start slow but when they take off, they are unstoppable. As a matter of fact 3 Idiots went on to open the Rs 200 crore club while PK was the first to enter then Rs 300 crore club. Which is why he doesn’t care about first day collections.”

Adds a industry insider, “Let us understand that Dangal is not a quintessential ‘dhamaka’ entertainer, which goes on to break records right from the first day. Yes, there is this big Aamir Khan factor but then at the end of the day, there are no chart buster numbers or a popular mainstream heroine — like in his last few films — to lean back on. Also, the film’s set in a small town/village. With such factors, don’t expect miracles.”

What is pretty much on the cards though is that at the least, Dangal will see the second best opening of the year as it would comfortably go past Sushant Singh Rajput’s cricket drama MS Dhoni – The Untold Story (Rs 21.3 crore).

“That is hardly a challenge for the film,” the expert continues, “Dangal has everything going for it to go past Rs 25 crore on its opening day. Yes, demonetisation factor is a reality that you can’t escape from. That would impact the collections at single screens for sure. It could in fact change the equation a little as well. However, multiplex business would be huge enough to still let Dangal gather good speed over the weekend.”

As for the lifetime collections, it will all boil down to the content. But then when was the last time when a question was raised around that for an Aamir starrer?

    • Well if it really does 30 crore on first day it will be a big feat , no doubt about that. Film will definitely lose a bit of business due to demonetization.

Sultan had a holiday release. I dont know why they are calling it a pre eid release, it was a holiday in most part of India.

    • No don’t let Dangal open bigger than Sultan. We still need some entertainment to continue! It won’t happen anyway, the advance it seems is not great.
