But not sure what’s in trailer for which KJo and likes are going gaga over.

    Also, it’s full on masala.

  3. Great, great trailer: Has the potential to be a big winner.

It’s pretty clear that just like in RDB’s climax or even TZP, Aamir won’t let his stardom or himself come in the way of a good story. It will pretty much be the girls who will be protagonists, and NOT Aamir.

However, what is clear is the similarity of some scenes in this preview with SULTAN: Aamir riding a Bajaj, the penchant for a boy-child, Aamir staring at his trophy-pics on the wall, Aamir with a revealing paunch. Unbelievable similarity. I am also expecting the training scenes to be similar to SULTAN thanks to the village-setting.

As I have always mentioned, it was unethical of Salman to announce and release SULTAN when DANGAL had been announced and was in the pipe-line long before even a single shot of SULTAN was canned. In spite of SULTAN having stolen the ‘novelty’-march over DANGAL, if DANGAL super-cedes or even matches SULTAN, I feel it will be a greater achievement.

    • Had similar comment after seeing it first last time last night.

“Sorry to say..liked the promo but honestly the novelty factor is gone. Too many Sultan images come to my mind watching this. Scooter, Gold medal talk, etc.

There’s no doubt movie is well made but to get that extra, the zing, novelty is lost. I have no doubts about its strong box-office but not sure if it’ll be biggest grosser as folks are saying. I don’t mind to proven wrong as its well intentioned movie and needed for a country like India for female empowerment.”

    • I will try to pull out the exact youtube link of Ali Abbas Zafar interview given either to Faridoon or Anupama Chopra. Sultan scripting etc was sealed around 2012-2013 period and Salman had given his nod to the movie provided his legal matters were resolved. This was an yrf movie from the beginning and contents well known to Aamir the same way SRK knew about Sultan Eid release prior announcing Raees for Eid. The unethical part lies somewhere else and with people who were waiting to capitalize on the vacuum created if Salman had to face prison time.

The trailer is okay but once again Aamir remains just about adequate for the role. He continues to be an ordinary actor & great scripting sense. Someone of the scenes I cannot believe Aamir has very similar mannerisms (may be the movie is better). The novelty factor is to screen every 2-3 years.

Given the fresh Olympic / medal hype in India this has fair chances to be a blockbuster.

Main Karun toh saala character dheela hai.

This is a great improvement for Aamir the ‘ordinary’ actor. Finally, he’s been able to shed his smart-alec vibe. Unfortunately, to reach the chameleonic range of Salman Khan, it’s going to take at least a 100 years for him.

His ordinariness is at full-on display here right from the scene when he watches a riot scene to his pleading with Das to marry and stop him from turning into a monster to lighting up and wiping a tear upon discovering Das’s love-making as well as the final scene when he walks away after handing over Nandita to the mob..

        • He’s ‘allowing’ those who have seen the film to give flamboyant & incredible reviews. Quite unlike him. Though I think the film may have an unforgiving brutal understanding of parenting, the opposite of TZP.

If it fails, allowing the hype will backfire, he’ll lose credibility. But I doubt it will happen. I’m sure this will be a winner.

The cricket analogy of chasing 300, well cards are 90% stacked against Aamir here. He only has exclusivity, spaced out release to rely on. By in large sultan has butchered the novelty factor. So if Aamir strikes big again he’ll get plaudits as usual but if it gets over Sultan, it will be an unbelievable feat. It’s a 6 month gap on similar theme, it won’t have the commercial cliches that a Salman film offers like chartbusters or a popular heroine.

Let’s see what Xmas has in store for dangal, like what I seen so far.

Sultan was a love story…this is about daughters and just like An Jo mentioned, I have a TZP vibe here where movie is not about Aamir but the daughters. Sultan (and all Salman movies) are about Salman.

    • But Sultans trailor didn’t hint at love story. It was a very Non Salman trailor for a salman movie focusing more on redemption etc. For the Sultan song we have a song here…There are lot of similarities even in the handling of the trailor. Yes this is about his daughters winning it for him, that was about Sultan himself. If it was Salman starring this could have been called a sequel too where in their daughter gets a medal…Having said that any well made movie can do well even if it the theme has been covered earlier. 300 cr is possible here. The only thing is I don’t think it will open as well as Sultan…Maybe a 25 cr+ Day 1 and doesn’t have as many holidays so content will have to make up for the holidays. I absolutely loved Sultan and said it will do 400 crs and I am sure I will love this one too…But it looks like there is a ceiling to sports movies in India as Sultan, for all its great reviews, tapered off fast…

      • More than TZP , CDI is a good comparison…Where the hero stays in the background and let the girls take attention. But I suspect there will be more airtime for Aamir as a wrestler in this than what SRK had as a hockey player. CDI, if released today would do 200 crs I think…This can go higher with right elements like more airtime for Aamir as wrestler, some good songs etc..But I will be surprised if it goes past Sultan considering how similar the movie is to Sultan.

      • There is a difference between a good movie and a great movie. Sultan was a good film , no doubt about that but it wasn’t great and that could be easily gauged through its collections. If the movie is as good as some are saying than sky is the limit.

On similarities trailer may look a bit similar but movies won’t , sultan totally focussed on Salman and his comeback , wrestling was ancillary part of the film, it’s different here in addition to the angle of women empowerment.

PK had many similarities with OMG but ultimately it became the biggest grosser, what matters is how engrossing and entertaining is the film , a similarity here and there won’t affect the movie .

  7. Krish I feel the human touch element will be better here. It’s going to be a real tear jerker in indian context and that is where it will score and will be its usp. You can switch the swag of Sultan to emotional component with a very real story ( TZP like ).

That is why its getting such superfluous review from people who have seen it. There is not a single soul who could not stop raving about TZP after exiting the theatre.

  9. ‘Dangal’ Was Born With Irrfan Khan In Mind For Phogat’s Role

During the writing phase, Nitesh and Manish visualised Dangal as a small film and they knew they needed a method actor to play Mahavir Phogat. The character needed to be shown physically transforming over decades – ageing and gaining weight, and the actor who they thought could pull it off best was Irrfan Khan.

But the pictures are only of Babita & Geeta – 2 as adults and 2 as child. So, possibly he can’t take picture with 4 of them in 1 single snap. Weird 1st look IMO 🙂

Watched Hollywood remake of Dangal. Will Smith did great in Aamir Khan’s shoes and gave his own touch. Girls also did fine and elder one did very good but still Zaira was better in the original version. Wife role is same as original as side and coach also shown little as negative as original. Overall still a good remake and Will Smith did great as father and coach and can win some awards unlike Aamir Khan who lost to (un)forgettable performance by Akshay in Rustom. Overall Recommended.

Incase some don’t get it… the movie is King Richard, father of Venus & Serena Williams.

  15. Nice trailer and looks entertaining and emotional so I definitely will catch this on the big screen. But I don’t think you can call this as a social film. The mentality of Indian parents to force their dreams on their children and expect them to be class first and gold medalist is age old and nothing innovative.More girls are made to study male dominated subjects like engineering, IT and computers in India compared to Europe where few women choose such subjects and instead opt for humanities, education and arts in bigger numbers.

The problem is Indian society thinks that once the girl is married she will move to her husband’s place and hand over her salary to her in laws but a boy will support them in old age. Recent court judgement shows this mentality isn’t changing. In big cities most middle class parents who have daughters educate them well and have big dreams for them. But still the sex ratio is actually lower in big cities than small villages because they are expected to arrange a big marriage and hand over the daughter who they spent equal money educating to in laws. So problem for sex ratio is not lack of belief in daughters intelligence or potential but lack of support from married daughters. In harsh terms, Indian society has made girls into an unnecessary expense who can’t give any returns in old age to parents. I think a film like Piku is much more effective for social message that even daughters can support their parents and Dangal is more of a pure sports film with female element.

    • Good comment Gaya. I think nothing changes in society through films and those who are expecting changes are completely wrong. They said same thing about PK and it’ll change society and inspite being the biggest grosser, there’s hardly any effect on anyone. So, even Dangal touches 300 crores, it will just limit itself to movie halls and no effect in real life.

    • Piku is not a biopic and so message is clear in its case.
Message will not turn into changing attitudes en mass. It will make a few people think. And these few people dont represent the majority who just watch for a good story and good entertainment. Aamir Khan knows this.

Majority of the parents will not stop pressurisng their kids to go for the kill. Especially small town ones with minimum educational qualifications. Recent example is Neel Battey Sannata.

As for daughters taking care of their parents, it does not require movies or books. It requires compassion and understanding. In olden times joint families took care of the elderly. Once nuclear families came into the picture, the condition of the elderly has become pathetic. If the son takes care, people dont make it a big deal. They deem it as his duty. If daughters take care, it is celebrated and the daughters themselves feel that they are going out of their way to do what the sons are supposed to do. If the son is unemployed, parents feel that their son is a useless. and if the girl is unemployed, parents feel guilty of not arranging a good match in time. Even if the girl is employed, most of the parents feel guilty if they dont marry her off. And the modern trend is high end old age homes. With most of the kids settling abroad, this has become the option.

      • “Majority of the parents will not stop pressurisng their kids to go for the kill”

Do you know actually Phogat did the same for these girls? A failed wrestler trying to fulfill his dream through his girls. The girls used to hate it but he was adamant to make them wrestlers and once they started growing and winning they started enjoying it.

        Like

      • You think girls don’t look after parents because of no compassion? How wrong you are! Any Indian girl would love to live at home, enjoy parents affection and care for them in the old age and repay them for everything they did. But how many boys will let girls parents live with them? How many in laws will let daughter spend her salary on her own parents? Almost nobody.

I myself am a only daughter and this issue is really torturing me. I am seeing my friends getting married, moving to husbands home and their parents being left with big borrowings for their marriage. The girls are too busy with job, household responsibilties and in laws and don’t get much time even to visit parents so looking after them properly is out of question.

I am an only daughter. I studied engineering and finance from top institutions and I am working in a good role. I can support my family easily but still they prefer to spend their life savings to get me married off than have a working daughter live at home and take care of them. I want to live with them and spend for them in old age and adopt a child but you won’t understand the emotional pressure I am going through from family and all corners of society. I will have my freedom and my parents love everyday and they can help me bring up an adopted child who will care for me after they are gone. But they act as if I am talking about moving to Mars and adopting an alien!

Please don’t blame girls when they really don’t have such options in this society even if they are earning well and educated well. Parents think a daughter at home or supporting them is a shame and even unhappily married is much better.

        Liked by 1 person

        • If girls are strong willed, no one can prevent them from doing what they want to do. One can marry a person who will understand. Or you can always buy a house near your married home and ask your parents to stay there independetly while you can visit them on a daily basis. You can supervise the staff employed there.

Your parents want to see you married because they feel that most marriages work and your own kids can take better care of you than adopted ones. One cant be sure of adopted kids when even own kids have become unreliable. All this is chance.

And there are good care homes if one can afford them.
Nothing is certain in life and there are many options. One can only plan but we dont know what is in store for us.

In my circle, many daughters are taking care of their parents with the active support of their husbands. And there are unmarried daughters, unmarried sons and they are not pressurised to marry. Marriage has become an option while working has become the norm.

        • Mere compassion is not enough. There should be will. I have lots of compassion for homeless kids, destitutes and other unfortunate people. But I dont do anything concrete to lessen their misery while there are good samaritans who take the trouble of giving some of the unfortunate people a proper life. Thats the difference between having mere compassion , wringing hands helplessly, spending sleepless nights and taking real action to do the needful.

        • I think you are living in an elite or NRI or liberal circle that is cut off from reality. I am from a middle class family and it is very different thinking. If I am sure that I will be permitted to support parents with part of my salary and stay next to them after marriage I will do so happily but I have not seen many examples in my life and I can see what married friends and girl cousins are allowed to do. I am talking of arranged marriage. For villages and small towns it should be even worse.

If there are so many options for girls to support parents then why is sex ratio so low even in Bombay Delhi? Even Malabar Hills and Colaba have low sex ratio for birth. Why is there so much need to raise Beti Bachao slogans and teach value of girl child? Sad to say but this is surely the mentality still for 99% of India.

Anyway let us not have social argument in a cinema forum. Your comment made me very emotional so I replied like that.

  16. One more thing I noticed is that the trailer(I hope not movie) is completely sided with Geeta’s character when infact there is hardly much difference in the medal winning tally with Babita. The whole promo focusses on Geetha and there’s hardly 1-2 scenes showing Babita fighting or winning any medals whereas Geetha wins cups, medals etc. This movie is about 2 daughters right?

  18. Liked it. There are few issues in general and several pluses –
    Issue 1- Lack of Novelty:
There is a great hangover of Sultan right from the way Aamir is looking to the way he is speaking in Haryanvi accent – all is Salman.
Salman fans can even say that Salli has dubbed for Aamir here. Likewise, Aamir fans can say that Aamir dubbed for Salman in Sultan. 🙂

    Issue 2 – Actions scenes
Salman really put his heart and soul in Sultan and came up with very good wrestling scenes which extended from Akhaara to Olympics wins and then to MMA. The scenes and setting changes with the movie.

    Issue 3 – Background music
Khoon mein tere Mitti, Mitti mein tera khoon is an awesome soul stirring song, used very smartly in Sultan at several occasions.
The same in Dangal is sounding similar yet a notch below

Probably all the issues are same – lack of novelty.
Once cannot deny this and take example of PK Vis-aVis OMG because PK came a good year and a half after OMG. OMG in itself was never meant to be a massy. It became blockbuster at 80cr is because of its cost and not gross. This meant many did not see.

Sultan is a massy blockbuster and caters to same movie goers.

    That’s all.

    But there are many pluses.
    1. The Beti Bachao Beti Khelao slogan post Olympic wins can be nicely captured by this movie. So that’s a big plus.
    2. Aamir Khan – His name is enough and even though story can be similar, one can go to Aamir Khan’s movie to expect new experience.
    3. Right casting – All actors seems to be really chosen well
    4. Movie looks entertaining
    5. Good release time – Christmas is always a good time to release entertaining movies.
    6. Dangal’s a father’s story. This is where the difference lies with Sultan, which was a husband’s story.

    • Well the USP of the Dangal trailer is the BGM. It really gives goosebumps, it lifts the trailer to another level. On haryanvi every character in Dangal is speaking way better than in Sultan, no doubt about that.

On standalone basis this is anyday a better trailer than Sultan but yes at this point its not feasible , comparisons are inevitable, but than sultan was not a wrestling film it was more of a love story, the second half had nothing to do with wrestling.

  20. Very effective trailer, it’s easy to spot the winner here. I expect a Hirani-like deal. A very strong but not record-breaking start on day 1 or whatever but of course made up by the trending eventually. Wish Sultan hadn’t released before it only to the extent that a more serious film deserves to have the novelty element working for it. This might not matter in terms of the trending and of course the film is otherwise quite different but still it would have been nice for the novelty to have been there. Note how this film about ‘girl power’ (at one level at least) becomes a kind of Sultan where Anushka doesn’t have to give up her own career. What if Sultan for instance after retiring for several years had actually trained his estranged wife for a competition? With Salman you can’t do that sort of thing so I’m not being naive here. Just commenting on the gender politics in this sense. If Aamir had done Sultan that might have been the storyline. But yeah ‘girl power’ is in these days! Pink was another recent example.

    • by the way on some of the box office discussions surrounding this it’s amusing to spot certain patterns:

      1 a) Hey it’s Dhoom 3!

It might or might not be a more commercial film than one expects. But even if it is let’s not get carried away and imply there’s no difference between this and Sultan or this and Dhoom 3 or whatever! All commercial films are not the same. If Aamir gets the biggest ones in films that are not Dhoom 3 or something like that well that’s more shame to the competition. If you start off shattering records over the entire opening period, if you end up with the biggest week 1 or whatever and if you then fizzle out later well you haven’t made a very good film. In other words a film which has a bigger star than everything else should at least sometimes (!) also end up as the biggest grosser. If this doesn’t happen from Dabanng to Bajrangi to Sultan (I won’t even get to other stars) one myst wonder why.

      1 b) Hey it’s 400 crores!

Nothing to see here. He’s made a very commercial film. Obviously it will be a record-breaker (if it isn’t we’ll get him later) but there’s nothing remarkable about this because it’s even more commercial than Dhoom 3.

      2) I expected Raakh

The non-Aamir fan who’s always so disappointed that in a commercial industry Aamir did not choose to make an art film.

He’s done a lot of bargain basement films but Sultan is also like that in a more prestige setup. In any case I found Sultan a headache of a film. Liked Bajrangi quite a bit but found this atrocious for the most part, precisely because rather than fashioning a narrative they went for the same bargain basement elements (especially in the second half).

I do think this film is more of a commercial film than first thought but…as I stated above in my initial comment…this is a commercial film “Aamir Khan style”.

Yes there is a difference between a regular commercial film and an AK commercial film. Fanaa, Ghajini, and D3 are prime examples of an AK commercial films versus others. I also agree that this maybe more similar to PK kind of product where they present a key social issue in a commercially viable way.

    • That’s not quite a correct reading of Sultan. While I do agree central premise was weak but it is very unfair to say that Anushka gave up her career and hence it was not about girl power. Girl power is the power to take decisions as how they feel is right without being imposed on. And when motherhood is the question, it takes a very different dimension. One cannot say that motherhood was not as important for Anushka as her career was at that moment when she sees Sultan celebrating becoming a parent. It was a decision she takes and then she implores Sultan to be with her just because she feels she is doing the greater sacrifice and that was the least she expects from her husband to be with her at the time of child birth. And then when the child dies she again takes a decision to leave her husband as she feels her husband has let her down badly. Every stage it was her decision. Even the eventual reconciling…Sultan was the least Salman movie I have seen. He was completely in the character, and he was as vulnerable as one can see Salman in a Salman movie.

      • But note the problem in your framing.. the idea that motherhood automatically trumps everything. Anushka is not initially very happy about this but then learns to be happy in Sultan’s happiness. These are classic traditional tropes. If a woman is ambitious in any field a lot of times motherhood does become secondary. there’s nothing wrong with this. To consider it something obvious is to feed a certain stereotype. A film that represents this is doing exactly that.

Leaving this aside I must say it’s a bit astonishing if one considers Sultan either a model of restraint or ‘different’ in any sense humanly imaginable. You can’t place the bar so incredibly low just because it’s Salman. I could still accept that argument for Bajrangi to an extent but not Sultan.

        • Agree with Satyam here, leaving her olympics dream for motherhood wasnt exactly the decision of Anushka, it was more of a forced decision. She sacrificed her dream for her husband happiness and that is what is expected from an Indian woman in general, They are expected to sacrifice their dream for their husband, kids, family erc. These decision are not their choices but forced one especially from the society. The way Anushka reacted after founding about her pregnancy clearly shows that she was very serious about her olympic dream but eventually gave up her dream.

This is no women empowerment , the patriarchy is so deep rooted in our mindset that even the forced decision or the so called sacrifices look obvious to us and these expectations are always made from the female.

When you dont like someone you try hard to pull that person down . The comment was just to satiate ones wishes with no correspond to others liking. If he is asked to rewrite the list again he wont be able to number the actors from 5-10 in the same order because the sole purpose of drawing the list was to degrade Aamir.

But yes I agree Salman is the number one star , but the difference among the three khans isnt that huge, their films do open in the same zone.

However please be equally vocal when likes of Satyam is trying to deconstruct Sultan, a movie by Salman, to prove why Dangal is better even before seeing it. It is this politics that needs even bitter criticism.
Look how he does- he says he did not like Sultan though he liked Bajrangi. Thanks for this generosity Satyam but you are agendaic here. If Sultan had released after Dangal, you would have dismissed it straight away. Here you are giving Dangal not only a chance but to make it look better you are deconstructing the storyline of Sultan, which was not only good but also connected a cord with the audience world over.
So Aamirafan, myselfaamir and thecooldude- either be honest in all your opinions or don’t accuse me of being biased.

I saw many statuses during the Olympics ‘Beti Bachao’ with pictures of our athletes and their medals. That is not a reason to have a child! I am worried that all this well meaning messages will just make parents over pressurise their girl children to achieve in sports as well as studies and dance or singing. Nobody who wants to abort a daughter is going to give birth just because there is 1 in 100 million type chance that she might win a medal. But parents who already have daughters might start forcing them to overachieve in sports. The message that only gold is good and silver is not enough is so harmful especially for the Indian parent mentality.

Even to the extent that Geeta loved long hair but his father never let her have and once she won medals, she grew her hair and continued the wrestling.

“Do you know actually Phogat did the same for these girls? A failed wrestler trying to fulfill his dream through his girls. The girls used to hate it but he was adamant to make them wrestlers and once they started growing and winning they started enjoying it.”

    • I very much doubt the film has that story. it’s bound to be much more liberal than that. Perhaps that’s not the actual story but the film is going to offer a slanted version of the truth in that case. Even in the trailer the young girls are shown beating up the boys which makes the father realize that they’re tough. A guy disappointed he doesn’t have a son to continue the tradition till he realizes the potential of his daughters. It’s very unlikely that he’s going to be represented more negatively than that.

Film will sugarcoat it and makes it something about women empowerment when in reality it is not exactly that. But no complaints as India needs women encouraging movies and as always I support it. It’s not a rocket science that Aamirsfan, thecooldude, myselfaamir and couple of others who do not want themselve to be named and shamed are insecure about Aamir Khan. Following are their behaviors which is quite uncivilised-

    1. They try to make other superstars’ movie less important – point in case is the attempt to make Sultan sound a lowly attempt on the genre which is Aamir’s.

    2. They come in gang and leave in a pack

    3. They like Aamir’s movie, any other movie which doesn’t have top 3-4 stars and movies of other languages

    4. They cannot digent Salman’s success and feel he is lucky to reach where he has

    5. They feel that the worse movie of Aamir is better than the best movie of other stars

Of course Dangal as a movie is bound to be good if not excellent. But this one is a bit of test for even an Aamir as far as absolute numbers are concerned. Movie releases late i.e 23rd Dec and not 17th/18th like other times so the openings will be bumper, but the gestation period is shortened to max 10 days and let see how all this affect the final totals. Further this time Christmas 25th dec falls on a Sunday and even the New Year 1st Jan is a Sunday. It has 10 days to make hay because even the hyperactive cool off after Jan 5…….unless if it turns out to be a Sholay which chances are slim going by the routine promo.

Let’s go at this one 1 by 1 just for fun

      1) THEY TRY TO MAKE OTHER SUPERSTARS’ MOVIE LESS IMPORTANT- POINT IN CASE IS THE ATTEMPT TO MAKE SULTAN SOUND A LOWLY ATTEMP…..Sultan, in comparison with Dangal, will not be a better movie and even you know that. As for it’s box office, there is no doubt that it’s a monster and will probably be the biggest movie of the year. Happy?

      2) THEY COME IN GANG AND LEAVE IN PACK…yes we are all the same people. You got us!

      3) The like Aamir’s movie – really? Aamir’s fans like Aamir’s movies? hard to believe. Also,’any other movie which doesn’t have top 3-4 stars and other language’. Don’t know about others but I don’t understand any other indian language and I don’t give a hoot regarding your so called ranking. If I like a movie, I will watch it.

      4) THEY CANNOT DIGEST SALMAN’S SUCCESS. Salman Khan is without a doubt ONE OF THE BIGGEST STARS in indian cinema. HIs current run which started with Dabbang is really really impressive BUT he simply cannot do a movie outside his comfort zone. Let him TRY to do a different type of movie and we will see how it goes.

      5) THEY FEEL THE WORST MOVIE OF AAMIR IS BETTER THAN THE BEST OF OTHER STARS. I don’t have an IQ of average Akshay Kumar fans so this statement is not even worth a reply…but Aamir has done some really lousy movies in his earlier days. Let me go on record and say that even one of his biggest movie, RAJA HINDUSTANI, was awful. Happy again?

As for me being a sadist….well I may be but since the word sadist means ‘someone who enjoys inflicting pain on others’, I don’t think fans of Akshay Kumar should be the ones mentioning it.

      • great response.. but the sheer craziness of all this is hard to overstate. The guy who has the most critical acclaim, an uncanny success record (since Lagaan) and the biggest grossers at different points is somehow not a ‘real star’ or not one of the biggest stars (let alone ‘biggest’). Over the years I’ve heard a lot of crazy claims but this one has to rank up there in the looney tunes hall of fame! I think one of the consequences of this online world we all live in one way or the other is that it really enables this sort of craziness. Because even people making such claims can nonetheless find ‘like-minded’ people somewhere or the other. It really becomes an alternate reality universe. And we see this in cinema but also in politics or sports and so on. You just construct your reality, find people who subscribe to the same and then it’s about producing numbers or links or tweets or whatever that keep (seemingly) supporting your claim. The other thing that feeds into it is the culture of hyperbole that the media in all its forms nurtures. Everything is exaggerated to a sickening degree. Except that it all starts seeming normal beyond a point. Everyone is a superstar, every film is a blockbuster, every other knock is one of the greatest in cricket.. on and on. This ‘haze’ that is created also enables that alternate reality paradigm. The hardest thing these days is to have ‘normal’ conversations with people because the culture of exaggeration has become so internalized that people make completely unrestrained claims and then wonder why anyone is even questioning them.

“Great” should be used sparingly Mr Satyam, but you are often found to be using it as per “convenience”

My question is again – why are Aamir khan fans insecure?

All my 5 points still holds good.

The basic question is – Why to downsize other stars to make your Aamir look big?

The same was done by SRK years back and opposed those then and so did Mr Satyam.

But now he is doing the same. Praise your star. Even exaggerate him/her. No problem. But don’t cut on the hard work of other stars and for god sake learn to respect other’s choices and beliefs. Online is a great melting point of all ideas, cultures and belief systems. Don’t try to be a bully…as you may find a bigger one next second.

Guess who was the first one to spot Aamir Khan’s talent
Aamir revealed that it was scriptwriter Javed Akhtar, who told Nasir that he should be a star.

Aamir revealed that it was scriptwriter Javed Akhtar, who told Nasir that he should be a star. “I joined chacha jaan as an assistant director. It was towards the end of the shooting of Zabardast in Lonavla where Javed sahab had come to work on Mr India script.

“I was sitting in Nasir sahab’s room and Javed sahab walked in to say hi. When he asked about me, chacha jaan said, ‘He is Tahir’s son, he is assisting me’. “Javed sahab said, ‘Why is he an assistant? He should be a star!’ It’s quite ironical that both Shabana and Javed, who are together today, individually noticed me at separate places and said the same thing.”
Aamir, however, still didn’t have the courage to say that he wanted to make movies but luckily for him, his uncle realised his future was on showbiz.
“After that also I never had the courage to tell my uncle or father. I didn’t bring it up. I was so frightened. “One day I was with chacha jaan. He met someone and introduced me, saying, ‘Meet my nephew Aamir. He is the star of my next film’. I was like ‘whoa’. That’s how I got to know I would be acting in his next film. Then he called me a few days later and said he wants to make a love story with me,” he said.
In 1988, Aamir made his full-fledged acting debut with tragic romance Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and true to Javed’s words, has been a star for more than 20 years now.
The panel discussion was held on the occasion of launch of Akshay Manwani’s book launch “Music, Masti, Modernity- The Cinema of Nasir Hussain”.

I am quite sure Dangal is going to better than Sultan, from what is seen in the railer. However, I am slightly underwhelmed. The trailer points towards a good movie. But my expectations were slightly higher for an Aamir Khan movie coming after 3 years. I liked the trailer but was not blown away.

I think Sultan worked primarily because of Salman’s stardom. For a good movie from him, I would better re-visit Bajrangi. It was a good movie with content and substance. Maybe my expectations from an Aamir Khan movie is too high. But for me, a movie of his coming after 3 years should be as good as 3 Idiots or PK or Bajrangi Bhaijaan. That is the standard for me. if not what is the point of dedicating three years to a project and making us wait for so long?

    • Get your point; but isn’t that the greater discussion? For those of us — I mean ignorant folks like me — it is becoming pretty evident — at least from the trailers –that the father pushed his daughters to live his dream. The previews make no bones about it. When Nikumbh asks whether we are preparing horses for races in TZP and when Phogat kicks his daughters’ asses to, there’s a fundamental difference – Nikumbh has gone through the trauma himself; Phogat hasn’t: And there’s the difference of cultural upbringing and subsequent results…Phogat, in his world-view, makes perfect sense to HIM when he is pushing his daughters: Nikumbh, on the other hand, stands for the very opposite..

    • As Anjo is saying this is a good discussion. I have disagreed with 3 Idiots or TZP concepts as the only right concept. As they say all pregnancies are not same, there is no one model which fits all situations.

Why do we go to school? Life is monotonous for most part to most people. Going to school prepares you precisely for that. Also capability/talent of people follow bell curve. Most people are mediocre in terms of talent; So they do hard work to get success. I didn’t know, what I was passionate about at age 20. Neither I was good at identifying. So I followed my dad advice. And I believe most people are influenced by surroundings. If everyone wanted to be IAS, the parents will push kids in that direction; In 90s it was engineering and medicine; then it became engineering-MBA. I am not saying you shouldn’t follow your dream. But I think most of people don’t know what they are good at in their early age.

The indian education system is built on making people for middle of bell curve. US system is more for outlier right side of curve (It can also work for people who want to do hardwired and mediocre in talent).

  34. Seeing the trailer, I too have been a little skeptical about the theme, and like others am reluctant to call it a film about women empowerment.

Even if this is a real-life story of a father who desired a son, and then eventually pushed his daughter to realise his dream, I think cinema has a responsibility to choose its themes from life wisely. Some of the things seem questionable to me straight off – girls dressing like men, being forced to take up a sport for the father’s sake etc… it’s not something I find appealing, and I hope the film does not justify or glorify that. People who have seen it have been raving about it, so that gives some hope. But my doubts remain.

Also, father-daughter themes have seldom found as much appeal as father-son, mother-son stories. There’s often a bit of awkwardness and distance in that relationship and possibly does not translate well on screen.

    • I was quite floored by TZP not because it offered anything new in parenting skills but because it did emotionally connect with a lot of people I know. A genuine opinion I hope would be that TZP is the utopia of how to parent. To harness a child’s natural ability, be the facilitator for that & create an environment to promote it & prosper in it. To not push one’s own desire onto that child. Dangal does seem to be the polar opposite.

I loved tennis as a child, I was bloody good at it. My parents never stopped me from playing it, but they never watched me play too. Around 11 when I went to the big school I got floored by the homework & played less and less tennis to the extent when I played again at 16 I was embarrassed by myself…I’d lost that talent I had. I’m not saying I would be a Roger Federer or something, but heck British tennis was rubbish, who knows I could be some nobody ranked 250 in the world & make an appearance at Wimbledon if I was lucky (these are all pipe dreams by the way – counterfeit notes to make a point). The Williams sister is a diagrammatic opposite story. It sounds a bit more like Dangal. I do not know if the girls Venus/Serena had any interest in tennis but it sounds like the father Richard made that decision for them when they were young to literally “school” them into what they are today. It’s a remarkable story, they’ve changed the face of women’s tennis from an elegant, tip toe rally sport to raw aggression & power. The surprise for me is this template has not been repeated for nearly 20 years. Serena is still the best. No one is close if she is on it.

For Dangal, the first trailer shows Geeta/Babita beating up a couple of guys, without father’s consent. Maybe he see’s talent? I don’t know the true story yet. The aggressive manner the girls are “schooled” by in the song / film trailer is reality in becoming the top person/elite in any sport. You’ve got to be exceptionally dedicated, motivated & pushed to your limits. The margins are very thin. Novak Djokovic has lost 5% in last 6 months and is now not #1. At elite level it only takes a slight loss in focus or energy, motivation etc to start to lose. Tiger Woods affair has killed his career, it has nothing to do with Golf but his level is so bad now he is pathetic compared to the elite. But his natural talent gives many hope he can come back (I doubt it). Back to Dangal & parenting, this dictatorship parenting is not my thing 100% it doesn’t happen to artists, accountants, doctors etc., but elite sport is different. In reality for every Tendulkar there are 10,000’s of no one even close. Sport is not like an office job.

This is also not a fictional story also. I do not know the true story. But if a William’s film was made I doubt it will start with them watching TV tennis & picking up a racket & having co-ordination and talent. Someone ultimately has to drive that talent – sometimes it’s a coach, sometime’s its a father/mother. There is no difference – to win you’ve got to work your b**lucks off. I don’t like the dialogue that if you come second you’ll be forgotten. To the outside world it is true (people recollect history via winners, losers are remembered if it were a shock or national calamity etc.), but to your close one’s you are always a winner no matter where you finish. That is a bad message, but might just be filmi.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkN9VdjgDwM – have a laugh as the stereotypical view of parents is portrayed. It is probably reality for majority of Asian cultures.

      • Also elite sport stars especially individual sports have personal coaches to push them & ensure they do not lose focus. It is natural to get bored, tire etc. but they employ specific people to get them into shape mentally & physically. It’s reality. Even the top CEO’s will or could have psychologists/coaches to keep them going. It’s all regimented at elite level. To stay ahead it’s a sacrifice made. A sports person career is concentrated into 10-15 years max at peak. They’ve got to earn what they can, achieve it all in that wingspan. The regime/system behind is crucial to being quite extreme to achieve it.

  41. Sultan was never about women empowerment and female emancipation….The tagline clearly said – Wrestling is not a sport. It’s about fighting what lies within.

The character in the movie is shown fighting his inner demons –
Koi tumhe tab tak nahin hara sakta jab tak Jab tak tum khud se na haar jao

Having said that, due to scarcity of decent movies in the last two months and then again the upcoming month, family audience is gearing up for a break from the stress of all these demonetization talk & general political nastiness. This movie may well turn out to be that family outing to just sit back and watch a nice story unfold on screen.

This is the vocabulary our Hindi movies should be using more often and the audience all over can relate to such stuff and start going to cinemas again. This movie is going to turn out huge in the hinterland !

Meanwhile can now understand anxiety among aamir fans wrt to novelty factor and the set and surroundings do give a sense of déjà vu and sense of familiarity. The uniqueness attached to an Aamir Khan movie is missing here largely due to Sultan.

        • You can diss as much as you want but 300 crores will not happen unless there is mass majority liking. I really wonder how can you find it so bad. In commercial format, it is regular underdog formula and Salman worked hard on the movie along with some dedication. It is not pathbreaking but is alright in commercial format and hence crossed 300 crores. It wasn’t even average WOM like Prem Ratan which wrapped under 200 crores. 300 crores can’t be fluke even though it doesn’t say much about the quality. But if you were expecting some cinematic history in Sultan, you have every right to dislike it as much as you are doing!

          Like

        • ‘Mass majority liking’ doesn’t mean very much to me.. or to be more precise it’s hardly indicative of a film’s quality.. unless you think KKHH is a better film than Dil Se or MHN is a better film than Swades. I’m not prepared to say that! But even getting to Salman there’s not even a comparison between Bajrangi and Sultan. And by the way I don’t expect pathbreaking stuff, just the entertaining kind. And I was asleep through parts of Sultan. Quite literally. But all of this is a red herring argument to be blunt. Either one must be entertained by Sultan or one is somehow expecting cinematic history. C’mon!

        • Not at all. One can easily dislike Sultan. But you make it sound its like one of the worst films out there even compared to Salman’s standards. I think you were in some bad mood that day and should revisit that movie sometime when in peace. You’ll at least revise your rating from ‘bad’ to ‘ok’ 🙂

        • I’m not saying it was the worst Salman film because there are many scraping the bottom of the barrel! But for example I preferred Kick to Sultan. Admittedly I didn’t see Kick in the theater.

        • Just to iterate and not confuse folks.. I think Dangal will be streets ahead of Sultan as a better film just based on the trailer and songs. There is no comparison at all. But I try to judge movies based on their promise(I can like even Force 2 within its limits).

          Like

        • This logic too I don’t accept. One could turn to the worst directors and the worst films and say ‘I wasn’t expecting anything more’. Because even at that bottom of the barrel once again there are some films that are better than others. But we are still at the bottom!

        • “I wasn’t expecting anything more’.”

I said its based on ‘their’ promise. The movie’s promise. For example, Force 2 shows that its fast paced action movie based on Hollywood model of era gone by and it stuck to it. (It got good reviews too). It is not based on ‘my’ expectation.

Like Akira gave hope for a false expectation based on the promos and trailer but I found it very disappointing on its own merit.

  45. Liked the first song, not this one very much. Ultimately though this is the kind of film that will really be about the entire experience and not just a sum of elements, the way most films are these days. this is why so many of Aamir’s films trend well. Because they constitute some kind of kind of overall experience that isn’t just about one crowd-pleasing scene or song or whatever. But yes it would have been truly great if Sultan hadn’t robbed this film’s novelty.

  46. A agree .. How I wish Sultan was not made and not snatched the novelty factor from Dangal .. Dangal is definitely going to be a much superior product, but excitement factor would have been at another level if Sultan not made.

    • Did Salman go ahead with Sultan in spite of knowing about Dangal? If true, that is highly unethical and I don’t buy Salman’s argument that the two stories have nothing in common. The backdrop is very important and I agree that the novelty is gone to some extent.

I don’t think Aamir would have even considered doing Dangal, if he already knew about Sultan, which makes me quite sure that Salman said yes to Sultan in spite of knowing about Dangal’s theme. He may justify to himself that both the films are different, but he has hurt Dangal for sure.

Salman does so much indifferent work in general and in such high volume that any one particular film makes no difference.
But to Aamir who gives his all to one film, and attempts to create truly memorable cinema, this kind of situation can be heartbreaking.

Now, given that Aamir and Salman are still on good terms (?), I don’t know the real story behind whose film was conceived first. But something is certainly wrong here.

      • I have always maintained that it was highly unethical of Salman and YRF to release SULTAN.

SULTAN can be a story set in any milieu. It is the story of an under-dog. With that being the over-riding theme, there isn’t any dependency on wrestling being the theme and the setting in Haryana. It could have been the story of a foot-baller from Mohan Bagan for all one cares, and the impact would be the same. It depended on how the director wove the story around the protagonist. SULTAN was about SALMAN and SALMAN only. Everything else, including Anushka or the wrestling background is akin to a red-herring.

Wrestling is HIGHLY important in DANGAL since it’s based on a person’s story firstly and secondly, the fact that girls from a state known for ill-treatment of the girl-child and skewed sex ratio are forced to fight with boys since there are no other girls to fight with is something intrinsic to the story.

Wrestling is irreplaceable in DANGAL but very much replaceable in SULTAN.

Take out wrestling from DANGAL and you take out the soul, take out wrestling from SULTAN but SALMAN still remains.

I am actually surprised how sportingly Aamir has taken this in his stride. He was even excited for SULTAN and whole-heartedly supported it. Either he was left with no choice, or he is supremely confident that inspite of the similar atmospherics, his product is vastly superior to SULTAN and that the public could see through it..

It seems in terms of pure box office numbers this flick may edge past Sultan but beyond that Dangal has big shoes to fill and has stiff competition from this year’s masterpiece Sultan in terms overall experience. Sultan turned out to be a ramble of a movie and an elating experience. One could feel the real tensions between ambitions, love and the way it explores internal conflict within. The movie had a good mix of emotions, passion but was also exquisitely controlled wherever required.

Hope Dangal is able to match that leap to greatness the way Sultan did and simply not a another box office marvel…..

If it goes past it will be one heck of an achievement, to go past a ‘similar’ themed movie only months after it released and posted already big box office numbers (when many pointed out its downfall will be the similarities). Big shoes to fill – I wouldn’t know I missed sultan altogether.

The film gives the impression of her leaving Salman for a single fault of not being able to save her newborn. The relationship at this point is not all that strained for Anushka to completely sever ties with Salman. Many husbands – for far lesser reasons than participating in Olympics – are not present when a wife delivers. Remember HAHK? That by itself is not a crime. It should have been tied up better to make the dynamic more believable.

      • I thought Salman’s own performance was very good. It is also one of his better films, in comparison to all the trash he keeps dishing out. But make no mistake, this is a strictly superficial script with no deeper resonance at all.

Its big significance is that it has succeeded in being a spoiler for Dangal. No matter how different the stories are, the theme is the same: wrestling. And when the sport is so niche, and patronised by select ethnic groups, there is bound to be an overlap. The ambition for gold, the father-daughter relationship, the wrestling fights with international players…is all there in Sultan and now Dangal.

If Dangan beats Sultan, that would be an incredible feat now.
I don;t expect a gigantic opening, because it is clearly not that kind of a film. But I do expect the collections to grow wildly if it indeed is a great film.

Well the film needs to open north of 30 crores if Aamir has to prove his opening credentials and that is irrespective of final fate of movie.

Demonetization will definitely affect the film at single screens but it may be balance by tax free status in various states.

  78. Well I dont think Sultan is going to affect the movie in any pronounce way. Theme of both the movies may be same but the similarity ends here. Movie watching is more of a holistic experience and a bit of similarity dont make much of a difference. I dont even remember any wrestling sequence of Sultan, it was more of a love story with the backdrop of wrestling and that too in the first half. As a viewer you expect to get entertain and if the movie entertains then these things wont matter much. An average viewer dont analyze the movie , he/she goes with the narrative.

As far as opening is concerned it will open in the range of 25-30 crores. How much close to 30 crores will depend upon the tax-free status, and yes single screen will definitely be affected by demonetization.

The final collection of the movie will solely depend upon the film. If audience take it in a big way then it can break all records. Three week open run will facilitate it.

In addition to above I dont think that 300-350 crore is some kind of limit. A 3 idiots today would have done around 450+ .

    • Any other star & we’d never be talking records. I doubt the movie will open huge as it’s not that big brand, grand scale film like Dhoom. It’s more likely to be P.K type opening. Then it’ll either be lift off or lift down. Couple of moves suggest a lot of confidence. Aamir hasn’t spoken against Sultan publicly but inside he must be seething. Also allowing all these industry folk to gush over the film before release suggests an element of confidence. The early release in US is interesting as most social media opinions be out even before films releases in India. I can only assume it’s turned out well otherwise I doubt these things would happen.

I wasn’t gung Ho on either wrestling movies doing well – I found the sport too abstract but Sultan has proved there is an audience for it. Of course women might love this film given the theme, so if it’s as good as we are being led to believe, I’d expect records to go. Not a single biggest day but a week 1 etc too lifetime. Also the Xmas and new year holiday edge is gone as both are Sunday’s unlike for D3/P.K so those days are hardly going to be trend setting days, if Monday is mid 20’s it will confirm if film will set lifetime record or not. Below 20 it’s gonna struggle for 200 crores.

      • Ideally I would have expected this to open closer to 30 as theaters have increased since PK and this might get the tax free advantage too but I think demonetization will bring it closer to PKs opening. It will be very difficult for this to challenge lifetime records opening at PK level as unlike PK the holidays falls on Sunday here. Additionally on jan 13 , OK Janu will take some theaters away from it. And it’s run will end on jan 25th when the republic day releases open. I think PK crossed 300 in the 4th week . But by that time dangal will be affected in multiple ways. I think the best case will be 250 to 275cr here. I don’t know objectively how to put a number on the demonetization effect but I suspect it will be there in all smaller towns and cities. Even if it opens like PK it can’t reach 300 in the same number of days due to no holidays, OK jaanoo and demonetization.

        Like

        • Well you have derived all the figures irrespective of how the film is .What if the film has terrific word of mouth? I think this will be the most important factor after three days. If the families lap it up, then there will be no looking back.

          Like

        • For this to go past PK not only it needs to open bigger – almost like D3 – so that it can make up for the lack of holidays but also needs to have a WOM better than PK. Mind you PK had terrific WOM too and trended well for at least 2-3 weeks before tailing off. And all this while overcoming demonetization in small towns. People need stand in bank lines to get money to see amovie rather than buying basic groceries…That’s a tall order indeed…Yes possible but not sure if it is probable..
Well atleast Aamir is making right noises by praising demonetization (and I am sure he is being extremely dishonest there and selfish for his movie but one cant blame him when we have a government of this type) to ensure atleast there are no protests for speaking his mind…But still all things considered, I will say 250 to 275 if the movie is good.
One more thing, we have not had a single movie releasing big in B centres in last 1.5 months…DZ, Kahaani, Befikre and even a movie like Wajah Tum Ho preferred to release more in multiplexes rather than wasting their digital print cost in small cities…
The one thing that is in favor of Dangal is that it is a unprecedented high release count…Bigger than Sultan…Bigger than any other movie…Plus regional dubs..So definitely Disney doesn’t think this is a niche movie..Regional dubs can add to the total and help it gross bigger…

  80. It didn’t harm PK while it had a similar theme to OMG. The film was well-made and it ended up doing extremely well. I don’t think Sultan is going to harm Dangal if the latter is well-made. Novelty of a film’s theme hardly defines the parameter of success in Bollywood. If such was the case, there would be one or two genuine hits in years. The same, old formulas keep working and successful movies usually have nothing to offer in terms of novelty.

Sultan was no masterpiece in itself. I found it average. It’s success has more to do with Salman’s stardom than anything else. I do think that if Dangal is well-made, it can do extremely well. It’s an Aamir Khan film coming after 2 years. I would find anything less than 300cr disappointing. Sure, there is more pressure when you have lack of volume of releases. Salman has breached the 300cr barrier twice within 1 year. Aamir is expected to do it, coming 2 years after PK. What’s the point waiting for 2 years if your film is not liked universally? But a well-made film should fix any problem.

    Like

    • I don’t disagree that two films on the same theme can do well. But you will agree there are common threads. Novelty matters. People don’t know about the ins and outs of a niche sport. A film is a way to discover a different world. Dangal will win the battle because that Haanikarak Bapu song alone shows the kind of detailing that has gone into this film. I have no doubt it will be a great success.

But I still have an issue with Sultan, especially if Salman went into this after Dangal was announced. it was ethically very wrong, and if true, i hope Salman has the worst 3 years to follow.

      • sandyi@” i hope Salman has the worst 3 years to follow”

The last line seems pretty unnecessary and unduly harsh. It may be all conjecture but I am sure Salman-Aamir are much beyond professional relations at this stage of their career / age and much closer /at ease for any one-upmanship. SRK is a bit different that way and does have a bit of a ‘panju’ mindset when doing things.

Further saying “he has the worst 3 years” is a bit harsh on people connected with him. If you watched KWK, Salman admitted the only driving force at this ‘age’ in doing more work (films /tv/shows) is to help people around him who depend on a living because when he goes to work, there are many who get paid. As per him even Akki doing a lot of movies helps a lot with employment. So their popularity and acceptance benefits a lot many people.

Aamir is hard to please, and this is a meaningful and distinct praise of Sultan from the man himself , so my suggestion to all here is to let go your predispositions –

        • I feel Amir here is trying too hard to praise Sultan. His tone is not convincing.
Not his fault though. If you are asked such questions what can you do? He wants to show he has no ill feelings towards Salman.
I too wish 3 bad years ahead for him if he was being mean about Dangal in producing Sultan to steal a march over it.

        • Tone is not convincing? I have not posted the longer version of this video link but he himself brings the topic of Sultan having watched ‘last night’ and in my opinion here he goes out of his way to praise not only the movie, the performances , direction and also dishes out the box office earnings – agar koi film PK ka record tod sakti hai toh yeh hai”

Salman own rambling on the ‘rape’ word and then poor chemistry between leads during promotions kept a sizable amount of audience away and its only Salman who is to be blamed not anybody else……. This was not his own production but yrf and he seemed pretty disinterested in promoting the movie beyond a point……

On rest, when was ‘Sultan’ really conceived, I have said enough earlier on this blog so will not repeat. We will live in age of Google and a lot of information is out there for everyone to corroborate….

Its wise to speak so when theres a criminal government at the centre. He has learnt his lesson.
Sad, but thats how things are at present.

  82. Demonetisation is a huge worry. But if the film does indeed break records in the course of its run, then Dangal could become a massive talking point in the media. The Modi govt won’t mind some much needed reprieve from all the negative publicity.

Aamir’s tryst with talking too loud and bringing bedroom conversation and thus bringing about a cyclonic storm. True patriots will boycott this film and also actively encourage others to do so.

Demetisation. Who would think of watching a movie when far more exciting things are being shown on news channels?

    No big heroine.

    Things for Dangal

    Aamir’s brand value.
    Curiosity factor.
    Aamir’s diplomatic statements.
    Spirit of holidays.
Mood for a much anticipated movie.

This is real fun & throughout his filmy career Aamir is the only main lead who has used sher o shayri (a forgotten poetry form) very effectively both in movies and his songs.

To me the best thing about Sarfarosh was the shaayri used in the songs ‘iss dewane ladke ko koi samjahey’

        Arz Hai ,
Dava Bhi Kaam Na Aaye Koi Dua Na Lagey ) -2

  88. Just watching/ed KWK. Again, KJo is saying DANGAL is the best film of the year. Don’t know whether this is again ‘you scratch my back, I scratch yours’ or it’s really true. Again, with regard to similarities with SULTAN, it’s pretty clear from his answer that he was rattled by YRF and Salman’s decision to go ahead with SULTAN. He called them up [they didn’t have the decency to call him up and ask if he had any concerns] and verified if there are any similarities. He might be diplomatic on these shows or in print but there’s no doubt that for somebody who invests 2 -3 years of his life in one project, it HAD to have an effect on his psyche.

I really hope this is a well-made film. It HAS to be excellent on all counts. Just being ‘better’ than most of the Hi-fi films of the just won’t cut the ice. SULTAN has stolen a measurable % of novelty in terms of the film’s atmospherics. The over-all experience of this film for an audience NEEDS to be way above and greater than wrestling as a sport. Now Aamir says he has already shown the entire film to more than 500 people.

On the rest, I quite liked this episode. I never watch KWK or the most abominable show on this earth, BB [Thank God Amitabh was only part of one season; I ABSOLUTELY hated him for the decision to host BB – it is way beneath his class.] But Aamir was having fun here within the realm of things that he is comfortable with.

Exactly. The whole thing is in very poor taste. I also agree that Dangal would have to be leaps and bounds better than Sultan to stand out. But I hope it does. It would give me some happiness to see Sultan critically eclipsed in the long run. But point is, it makes no difference to the likes of Salman and Aditya Chopra. Their interests are so mercenary, their filmmaking so superficial, and their commitment to each project so limited, that none of this matters.

  89. Krish, I have some analysis for reference.

Dangal has 3 free weeks till Ok Jaanu releases but it also lost 2 holidays in Dec 25 and Jan 1. Basically it has 10 solid days from Dec 23 to Jan 1 then the regular weekdays from Jan starts with not much holidays. It will be difficult to catch up PK unless the WOM is extraordinary. You can do the comparisons.

PK had major drop on 18th day which is 1st monday in Jan. But for Dangal the 1st monday in Jan will be 11th day only. For it to touch 300 crores, it has to have better WOM than even PK. Not saying its not possible. Anyways nothing against Dangal but its just to give you understanding of the final boxoffice collections.

If you want, fill in the numbers in the below chart in your reply and this gives easy comparisons.

    • Master, I posted something similar somewhere above in response to Raj.

For this to go past PK not only it needs to open bigger – almost like D3 – so that it can make up for the lack of holidays but also needs to have a WOM better than PK.

      • Right, so Aamir speaking about INTOLERANCE was quite apt – no need for statistics, just broad-brush everyone who questioned — decently and intellectually — his & his wife’s take on INTOLERANCE as ‘sanghis’ and ‘bhakts.’ But NOW, since he and SRK have tweeted in favor of demonetization, it is ‘dishonest’ and ‘selfish’!!

Have to say, am just loving this ‘unraveling’ of ‘liberal’ folks!!

Welcome to the new world order, SRK – wearing a Muslim heart on his sleeve in RAEES and Aamir are now ‘sanghis’ since they didn’t, unfortunately, speak against the current government’ policy!! [And this has nothing to do with the merit or demerits of the action taken by the government.]

[Also, didn’t know Modi and his ‘bhakts’ had so much influence in Tamil Nad as to influence Kamal Haasan’s movies!! I heard something about VISHWAROOPAM, but I guess that was again
        ‘bhakts’ in disguise..]
