      • Impossible to reach Lagaan heights. it’s not just about treatment of the subject, it’s about the theme itself. Lagaan with its period appeal, the whole British angle, romance, songs and sports theme was a heady, never-seen-before experience. And it truly had international appeal. Dangan no matter how good cannot be Lagaan.

Here the last 35 minutes consist of just the Dangal …
However Aamir Khan’s body language, his expressions is gold.
IMO will be a big hit with families – Multi ho ya SS.
Lekin repeat audience mushkil hai, and that is why may not be able to cross PK.

Dangal quick movie review: Aamir Khan’s film has the best written first half of 2016
By BollywoodLife on Wed, December 21, 2016 8:59pm
Here is what the first half of Aamir Khan’s Dangal all about.

Fans wait eagerly to watch Aamir Khan’s film which is a once in a year occurrence. This year the actor brings Dangal. The sports based drama is based on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat, and his daughters whom he taught the sport of wrestling. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra star as Geeta Phogat and Babita, the two daughters, respectively. Dangal has been directed by Nitesh Tiwari. Bollywoodlife’s Editor-in-Chief Tushar P Joshi is watching the film, and the first half just got over. Here is what he has to say about the film so far:

“Aamir Khan’s Dangal has the best written first half of 2016. The film opens with a bang and has some amazing moments right till the interval. Aamir plays Mahavir Singh Phogat whose dream is to have a son who will win him a medal at the Olympics. Fate has some other plans for him and instead of a son he has four daughters. Sakshi Tanwar plays his wife who refuses to understand his obsession with wrestling. The pace is quick and we are introduced to Geeta and Babita as two kids who happen to beat up a village boy who was calling them names. From there begins the journey of Dangal. The journey of discovery where Aamir sees the potential in Geeta and Babita and trains them to become wrestlers.

The comparisons to Salman Khan’s Sultan might creep into your head before you enter the theatre but once the ball sets rolling there is no justification to the comparison. Dangal is very different from Sultan with the only common element being the backdrop of wrestling. Aamir is as usual in top form but it is the child actors playing Geeta and Babita who win your heart with their performance. There are tons of seeti and taali maar scenes in the first half and the writing is incredible. Geeta’s first fight and Aamir’s dialogue with Sakshi are some stand out scenes.

Pre interval we see a senior Aamir and his daughters have grown up. All eyes on the Olympic medal now!”

Stay tuned for the full review of Dangal.

Dangal is being hailed as the biggest hit of the year and marks the welcome of two new young actress into Bollywood. The film is receiving critical praise and accolades for it’s potrayal of Women and gender hierarchy.

    Dangal Rating: 5/5

Dangal is getting praise from all over the premier shows in the world for it’s cast and heart moving story. The emotional aspects have been handled very well. The gender stereotyping has also been pointed out and how girls can be stronger than boys mentally and physically.

‘Dangal is a must watch film for all the audience all over the world. It’s the story of Hard work, being passionate about the dream and fulfilling the dream no matter what. A truly Inspirational film’

Among all the numerous tweets this one stands out the most for me and henceforth is a lesson for all the bollywood actors that there is no scope for half hearted measures. This goes especially for ‘so called’ brilliant actors like Ranbir, SRK and Hrithik…..

@aamir_khan’s transformation reflects his utter dedication. His honesty makes #Dangal relatable & cinematically spectacular, all at once!

Meanwhile, I take this opportunity to wish everyone here happy holidays. I will be not part of the box-office thread henceforth except for a ‘ping’ here or there if needs arises. Do not wish to deprecate ‘two great’ movies in terms of numbers/comparisons. But as someone who immensely enjoyed his 90s films, I’m not sure I like seeing Aamir in this kind of a role so early. I’d love to see him in an Earth kind of role in a big mainstream film. He needs to do a part that reinstates his star quality. Something like Raees.

It’s the season of awards and red carpet events in Bollywood and our celebs are all geared with their best attire to dazzle at the event.

Actress Sonam Kapoor won the best actress award for Neerja at an award function recently. The film that was based on air hostess Neerja Bhanot who lost her life while rescuing the hijacked passengers on Pan AM Flight 73 had received a great response on the box office.

As the actress received the award she thanked all her fellow members of the film and then said, “I have to thank the terrorists and passengers for this award!” Another actress present (who was also nominated for the award turned in amazement and asked her ‘what are terrorists and passengers doing here’ and she burst into laughter.

Later it was realized that Sonam meant to thank the terrorists and passengers who acted in the film. But it seems that the poor choice of words didn’t bear any fruit for the actress.

Lagaan was a great social film too, but wildly entertaining. That perception has to come through for the public to embrace it.

    • Agreed with this comment. It has to have the humor/entertaining elements to expand the reach.

    • I don’t quite agree. Entertaining to me is 3 Idiots. Films need to have part of this but the real quality is emotional connect & drama. Not melodrama but just pure drama. Think Aamir specialises in this quality so well. I wouldn’t call BB entertaining it’s more emotional/drama that drove it’s success. It’s possible this doesn’t derive repeat viewing, I’d be a bit disappointed if it’s a film devoid of repeat value.

I’m interested in the Tiger Woods rebirth of sorts. If he manages even one major now it’ll be a miracle. His recent comeback was promising. But Golf is anyone’s game, any random person can win.

  49. This is his third film. What else have you seen around it? A making-of-video that’s been doing the rounds online, even before its release, which is a smart move. Because the actors themselves training to look and feel like world-class athletes subtly and beautifully mirrors the story of Geeta and Babita themselves, moving up notch by notch, from a village akhara to synthetic mats in global arenas. At no moment do you feel that Fatima Sana Shaikh (Geeta) and Sanya Malhotra (Babita) aren’t professional wrestlers, or that they are not Haryanvi.
Towering over them is the quiet, stern, but hardly foul-mouthed for a Haryanvi father, Mahavir — that model ‘man of the house’ from a couple of generations ago, and perhaps valid in villages even now. During the film, he ages about 30 years in a timeline of about 15, which is again true for rural menfolk. This rotund, pot-bellied, subtly expressive Aamir brings the same earnestness to this film as he does to potboilers like ‘Dhoom 3’ or ‘Ghajini’.

Just came back from Dangal. Great movie but I have some doubts about beating Sultan. Can it beat? Yes but I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t. Dangal is a far superior movie but Sultan is far more commercial and masala. Aamir has really taken a back seat here and let the 4 girls showcased their talent for 2 and a half hours. Also, its hard to make a REALLY entertaining movie when you can’t take some liberties since the movie is a biopic.

All in all, really enjoyed it. Best movie of 2016? Hands down! Best Aamir movie? No.

Let’s see how the weekend goes!

Man, how unaware you are! What do you think is the 2nd half?? It is all fictitious from the silly war between coach and Aamir to the suggestions. If it wasn’t Aamir playing that role, I don’t think they would have added that track and even that climax in the room. Father was also their personal coach but the girls got trained in women’s wrestling ‘akhada’ in Delhi. Father was not the only reason they got all their medals. That was tweaked for Aamir – the star.

Dangal has taken an very good opening of around 55-60% which is the second best opening of the year after Sultan but that was expected as the other competition was pretty weak. The advance of the film was strong especially for the post 5pm shows as the many multiplexes racked up record advances for the weekend beating Sultan. Dangal has opened to excellent numbers in the big cities but smaller towns are less. The film is Haryana based and it could be North leading the way when normally its Mumbai and South for most Aamir Khan starrers barring a an exception like Dhoom 3. The under performance is Eastern India and parts of Gujarat especially some stations of Saurashtra. It also remains to be seen if demonetization affects the film in any way, the mass centres are lower but that is probably due to lack of action and music rather than demonetization.

The huge plus is that its a family drama and its target audience will come in the evening and the weekend. The biggest negative for the film is that the holidays have fallen correctly for the film with Christmas and New Years Day falling on Sunday which is a holiday anyway. Sunday will get a boost but nothing like what would have happened on the weekdays but to compensate is the best period of the year with the Christmas holiday period last for ten days where the film rack up huge numbers until things go back to normal on 2nd January. The initial at big city multiplexes is on par with Dhoom 3 which is the biggest opener of Aamir Khan till date but smaller cities and it is they which will eventually decide how big the film can become.

  59. 1 Hit & 8 Flops At The Box Office | 2016’s Last Quarter
    By Koimoi.com Team –

After Sushant Singh Rajput starrer M. S Dhoni – The Untold Story released in September end, October took off poorly with films performing extremely low at the box office. All hopes were pinned to the two big Diwali releases, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay to set the box office ringing and give a boost to the dull 4th quarter of 2016.

October took off with debutantes, Harshvardhan Kapoor and Siyami Kher starrer Mirzya. The Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film bombed at the box office collecting only 11 crores lifetime and was declared a flop at the box office.

A string of releases after that, such as Gandhigiri, Saat Uchakkey and 31st October, also became flops with minimal business coming in from them.

The big releases, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay were the only films that drove people to theaters in October. While the Ranbir Kapoor starrer entered the 100 crore club and managed to become a plus affair, Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay was declared average with a collection of 100.25 crores at the domestic box office.
Force 2, Rock On 2 and Tum Bin 2 posters
Force 2, Rock On 2 and Tum Bin 2 posters

November took off with a string of sequels. Rock On 2, Tum Bin 2 and Force 2 all three released back to back and vanished within the blink of an eye.

Once again, the trend of big releases at the end of the month continued with November as Dear Zindagi released towards the end. The Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan starrer went on to become the only HIT in the last quarter of 2016.

The last month (December) took off with Ranveer Singh’s Befikre which has also turned out to be a losing affair at the box office. The film has collected 55.54 crores at the domestic box office so far. Also, Vidya Balan’s Kahaani 2 could not sustain well.

All eyes are now on Aamir Khan’s Dangal which is the final release of the year. With all the positive reviews pouring in for it, we are expecting it to end the year with a bang.

On the whole, Dangal is not just a movie; it is an experience to be cherished. It is extremely engaging, brilliantly entertaining and phenomenally patriotic in its feel. It is as much a film for the young as for the old, as much for the classes as for the masses, as much for the city audience as for the viewers in small towns and villages, as much for the rich as for the poor, as much for the multiplex audience as for the single-screen cinema audience, as much for the men as for the women. It has special appeal for the ladies and it has terrific repeat value. To say that it will prove to be a blockbuster is to state the obvious. The film is destined to be one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema. In fact, it can turn out to be THE BIGGEST BLOCKBUSTER EVER!

is this the film will put amir khan at entire new level ? we will find out by monday if the film ” stands ” I still think it will be a success but at max it will do 250cr or 275cr….

Some Cinematic Liberties aside, very good movie and everyone in my group loved it and audience went clapping at the end. I think Aamir provided the star platform for this vehicle to let others excel and thats what the biggest value that he brings in on any projects. Sultan was entertaining but also tad bore on Anushka’s angle, this is all thumbs up on all the characters. I will see it again on Sunday so will have a refined opinion then, right now mesmerizing experience.

        • again I disagree with much here. Because the Right in India is adding to the list of Muslim names it considers ‘unacceptable’. It used to just be Aurangzeb forever. Now (let’s be candid) it’s any Muslim king. These days Akbar is attacked almost as much as aurangzeb. Of course throwing around terms like ‘mass murderer’ loosely is already ridiculous. Most kings in history would be mass murderers by that definition. By the way it’s also the case that when the same Muslim kings were running around Central Asia or wherever they were butchering people in the very same fashion. They did the same things whether the subjects were Muslims or Hindus. It was about power and you eliminated whoever was in the way. Some were of course worse than others (and of course Hindu kings were similar ‘mass murderers’ too.. though maybe Hindus liked getting ‘mass-murdered’ when Hindu kings did it and not so much when Muslims did..) but again this is the classic problem of taking modern fault lines and ‘exporting’ them to the past. Anyway this is getting into an old debate here.

Well seriously, I’ve been away from discussing demonetization topic on this blog as not many mature folks participate discussing. To put it simply, all my business friends have managed to exchange new notes inplace of old notes at over 80% rate. Anyone who has little clout and circle are able to do it. There are tons of articles where folks with huge amounts of new notes are getting caught. That’s not even like 5% of the folks. RBI chief also got arrested as he help in aiding to move out new notes outside banks illegally. All the political parties can go and deposit money without any restriction or show proof of earning. So, folks are going to party persons to do the exchange easily. None of the upper middle class person or rich person with little clout is impacted with this so called Demonetization. So, who got impacted??? Only the poor and weaker folks in the society. Can’t believe folks can’t see this with open eyes. Idea might have been good but implementation is worst and ruined majority of under privileged folks in India.

My curiosity here is that Saif is a huge history buff, and they would not have chosen the name because Kareena found it fashionable or something. He knew the significance of the name. Then the question is, who is Taimur really and what sterling qualities attracts Saif to this character in history? I think it’s a fair question.

If I have 1cr black before Nov 8, and now I have 80lakhs, I lost 20lakhs. My driver who recd 15k/month salary, never saved anything, and will keep receiving 15k/month in new notes did not lose anything.

RBI called back 15lakh crore old notes. They have not even printed 6lakh crores yet. And by all estimates, they may not even print more than 10-11 lakh crores. So who won? The hoarders or the RBI? The RBI’s liability has already shrunk. If it had not, the Rupee would not have stayed this stable, in in fact it even appreciated against the USD in the last 30 days.

The new IDS announced on Nov 28 has already netted more than 7000 crores. Another 10,000crs have already been netted by IT raids everywhere. And this is just the start, the tip of the iceberg. The massive data collection exercise done by the govt ensures that if they have the will, they can pretty much zero in and catch every tout, broker, corrupt banker etc who were in the loop of converting old black notes to new ones.

If someone thinks that Modi is going to let go off this once in a lifetime opportunity to make a few lakh crores for the GOI, and broadcast daily multiple perpwalks, they are clearly dreaming. Especially before the UP elections!

Modi is going to pull a Robinhood v soon. Since Nov8, some 30% more Jan Dhan zero balance accounts have been opened. Modi is all set to pump in hundreds of thousands of crores that they have confiscated from the black money hoarders into these Jan Dhan accounts. And then he will go to every village and ask them to reap the windfall. He is going to pull the rug from under the feet of the garibi-hatao parties. His own votebank is cursing him, but the votebanks of all the other parties are praising him to the skies. He has excoriated his own baniya votebank, all of them have lost upwards of 20% in converting old black to new. Some who were not connected have lost 65% through the new IDS. Meanwhile, every poor Indian is filled with glee at the sight of the rich cats getting 20%+ haircuts. Their simple motto is: hamari jeb mein kuch nahi, lekin kala dhaniyon ki jeb Modi ne kaat di!!
But does anyone think his own angry votebank is going to switch sides now and vote for Rahul, Kejri et al??

          1. Instead of 2000, 200 and 400 would have made more sense. Having 100 and 2000 in pocket do not make sense.
          2. Code for bank employees. code for CCTV, KYC, ATM.
          3. Should have given incentive for cashless transaction before (At least one year in advance).

        • Yes, totally agreed that the implementation was flawed. But the overwhelming need to maintain secrecy meant that the planning could never have been broad-based involving many different groups of people. It was always going to be a mess, but it seems like the risk was taken anyways.
MSM keeps trying to highlight the lines, cash crunch etc. They do not highlight that the most difficulty is being faced by 100 million or so people squeezed in between the top 300 million people out of a country of 1300 million. The bottom billion have been unaffected because they had no money to begin with. What did they lose? They are used to scrounging, sleeping on empty stomachs. But when they see the classes above them struggling, they are filled with happiness.
Modi has actually pulled a Lenin and Mao right here. No wonder the likes of Forbes are heavily criticizing him for blatantly using the state to confiscate private property. But the garibi-hatao socialists/communists in India have not understood (or they know the game but are being disingenuous) or admitted that Modi just pulled a communist maneuver! Its the moneyed folks who have lost 20%+. What have the poor people lost??
And off course is a rich black money hoarder loses 20% of his stash, he is going to not operate his cash intensive unit, and will lay off people, until he can once again have the cash to restart. If a supply chain was entirely running on black cash, obviously it is going to die and kill the jobs in that chain. So either the operators of that chain turn to a white mode of running, or they take time to gather black again to restart. But now they will be fearful, cause as long as Modi remains, they have the Damocles sword hanging overhead.

  83. Dangal Scores Big On Day One – 29/30 crore estimate!
    Saturday 24 December 2016 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dangal has done excellent business on day one collecting around 29-30 crore nett as per early estimates. The opening day is in the second highest non holiday opening ever. Dangal is also the second highest opening day collections of the year and they are also the second highest for an Aamir Khan starrer going past PK (25.45 crore) but behind Dhoom 3 (32.48 crore). The huge numbers have come despite some places underperforning. The best performance has come in East Punjab and Delhi NCR, the former has been helped by the Haryana feel which meant the film even scored in the smaller centres of East Punjab. The figures are simply insane in these areas with huge evening numbers. The under performance is in Eastern India (West Bengal, Bihar etc) and more importantly Gujarat / Saurashtra which has held Mumbai circuit back a little as compared to North.

There were reports a couple of weeks back that the film has tax exemption in UP but that has not happened as yet and the film is playing on normal rates in the state. The exemption cold have helped if it was there as barring a few multiplexes of the circuit the collections could be better. The opening day and the open run is enough to ensure a big success but with a festive event film the question is always how big. This real big question is that will Dangal emerge the biggest hit of the year or remain the second biggest (this is almost certain due to the open run). This will be decided how it performs in its weaker areas over the weekend as this is where the spare capacity is and potential of big growth.

        • With the Sultan effect taking the wrestling novelty away, absence of a heroine, no romance, no big production house, a director of no proven pedigree, one chartbuster title track every song situational, the demonization effect, non holiday opening…Aamir brand power has proved you only need a good film to open big. Content & audience trust is his starpower. He has ZERO to prove going forward.

Stick any star in place of Aamir in Dangal…it simply would wilt. Stick Aamir in Sultan with the deck of cards stacked firmly in his favour it would prove it again.

This time he played the underdog & even hunter. Had the balls to give the film away pre release, pure genius & he has the script sense in tact.

  85. I found Aamir’s performance stupendous in the film. For me, he is the pivot of the film and holds it together. What a character! I had plenty of reservations about his role, but having seen the film, I feel he has given a performance that will be remembered for a long time. I enjoyed seeing the whole graph of his character – from his younger days to a middle aged man to the older Phogat. Epic!

The film itself is not Aamir’s absolute best. It is one among his best films. The first half is terrific and I fall short of words to describe how charming it is. The second half was a little tedious for me. I do not enjoy watching wrestling, so I wasn’t as invested. The sports aspects of Lagaan and CDI worked better for me than Dangal. Also, I kind of really missed the younger Geeta. The older one is good enough, but you never quite take to her.

I felt after a marvelous first half, the film doesn’t have as much to say in the second half. The tension dissipates somewhat, making the proceedings a little less engaging.

Still, overall, a wonderful film, with great life lessons. But what makes this film truly special is Aamir’s act. I thought he was out of this world in PK, but Dangal is truly his most accomplished performance. Make no mistake, he is the most important character in the film, even if he shares a lot of screen time with his daughters.

Dangal’s second half is not upto the mark, and it is Aamir’s character that lends the film heft and keeps the audience emotionally engaged.

I think the film will be a huge hit at the boxoffice, I have no doubts about that.

One thing in favour of the film in terms of boxoffice is that it is such a clean, entertaining family film. Not one scene makes you cringe. That is always a huge plus.

  88. Dangal and its women: Aamir Khan is not always centre-stage in the film and that’s refreshing

In the 90s, the Shah Rukh Khan versus Aamir Khan camps in my house was very clearly divided.

My uncle and my sister were staunchly against the “average looking nobody who made it by fluke” aka Shah Rukh Khan (I took grave offence to their words), while my mom and I thought Aamir was annoying and pretentious. “Why does he think so much of himself?” I’d ask my sister. She’d respond with, “At least he can act.”

I look back at the mock fights we’d have at home with wonder, given that Aamir’s films in the 90s could truly be his best (Sarfarosh, Rangeela and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar are some of his finer performance to date, according to yours truly). It also helped that there weren’t too many interviews of celebrities to fuel your fleeting feelings for them.

My mom later converted into a Salman Khan fan (“he’s so entertaining,” she’d say) and with films like 3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par and PK, Aamir became a self-proclaimed messiah of sorts, which made me hate his righteousness even more. Taare Zameen Par was a good film, with a noble cause, no doubt. But just that all-knowing look of his was enough for me. I couldn’t take Aamir Khan seriously.

And then he went ahead and made the biggest blunder (no, I’m not referring to his intolerance comment).

In season four of Koffee with Karan, Aamir Khan appeared with his wife Kiran Rao to promote his upcoming film Dhoom 3. In it, he spoke (like he always does) about how he thought Dhoom 3 was an amazing film, and he chose it because of the script. “For me to give a great success, I have to have a great script.”

I was sold for a while. Could it be?

After walking into films like Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots and PK with many expectations, only to realise that Aamir’s righteousness overshadowed everything, and that these “films with a social message” that he kept alluding them to be, were actually formulaic commercial vehicles — could Dhoom 3 finally be that one film where he’d shed the messiah image for a genuinely good film?

    I was so wrong. *cough*ThePrestige*cough*

    Poster of ‘Dangal’
    Poster of ‘Dangal’

So, why am I meticulously talking about my dislike for Aamir Khan? Because, much to my surprise, I loved Dangal. And I walked out of the film with much respect for him.

    • Lol these wars were in our house growing up. My sister was a Salman/SRK fan I remember her giddiness and delight when Salman turned around in KKHH. It was like fantasy for her. Since Lagaan, appreciation grew for my support of Aamir. It’s only since OSO she’s started disliking SRK films…still finds it tough to say outright. In UK SRK has tremendous loyalty, he is no doubt the king. KKHH, K3G really sealed this for him. But he has disappointed his fans with some awful choices. Dear Zindagi is a welcome film, sets up Raees for sure.

Salman was my sisters ultimate favourite, remember Saturday mornings…every bloody week we’d watch MPK. Then came HAHK which really blew the UK market wild and open.

Slowly but surely the pendulum has swung to Aamir, because busy lives mean you want relatively good chance of enjoying film. Pricing is £10 minimum. Dishing out £60 including popcorn etc is expensive. So selectivity is important.

Personally I try not to miss any 3 of their films. But recently it’s become easier to pass on the odd SRK or Salman film. It helps not being a fan. The biggest thing for me is watching a good film. I tend to take the fun out of it by reading reviews, ensuring money is well spent. I watched ADHM and Dear Zindagi as I was sure wife would like it. Sometimes got to keep everyone sweet!

However, the filmmaker has now apologized to the actor for not being called on his show. He was quoted saying, “There was a talk of getting him on the show in between but things did not happen then. We had thought about it. It would be an absolute honour and privilege to have Govinda on the show.” (sic)

“My apologies that he hasn’t been (on the show) and he felt bad about it. There is no intention to hurt him. He is a terrific artist and a great movie star. I would love to call him. I will take a note and call him and I hope he accepts my invitation,” he added. (sic)
Well, we need to wait and watch for the moment when Govinda will appear on Karan Johar’s show.

The reason being that Christmas is on hand and everyone has a holiday or even a long vacation planned. The timing of the release has been superb and Aamir Khan will surely reap the benefits of a plentiful harvest. Not just Christmas, the new year is almost upon us and there is no way anyone is going to pass-up the opportunity to see Dangal. On top of that, word-of-mouth boost is definitely on for Dangal and this will extend its lifetime run well into the third week.

  100. Man this thread already has 235 comments! Will have to start a new one in a few days but we barely have the first day’s figures in!

The numbers though are fantastic so far specially given the genre of the film. I’ll just endorse everything Jay has said in one of his comments today about all this.

I should make another point here. If another film releasing around the same time, comparably big and so on, had made say 25 crores instead of 30 people would have said ‘hey it’s about demonetization’. And this is the problem I have with very many ‘excuses’ in this sense. They explain whatever it is one wants to explain away. They’re not precise in any sense. So the film that does 25 instead of 30 (assuming all else is equal) probably does so because WOM isn’t as strong even on the first day. Or from the other end maybe demonetization is a factor and Dangal could have done 35! But that factor still allows a film to do 30, it doesn’t have to be 25! The same holds for other ‘excuses’. So ‘competition’ doesn’t mean that ADHM’s gross is optimal! Not when a Bhansali period piece is doing far more with much greater competition.

But specially when you take a film like Dangal which isn’t the typical blockbuster kind of genre (Sultan, D3, whatever) the star at the center and his credibility become all the more important. I would never have gone for Dangal with another star. Because it’s not my favorite genre. But Aamir made the difference for me. I can’t be the only person thinking like this. Because I know how often I have seen films when Aamir was part of them and I was otherwise not too convinced by the genres/films in question. To have this sort of day 1 for a film where a guy is playing father to older daughters and where clearly the film doesn’t look like blockbuster entertainment is nothing short of stupendous.

In any case after watching the film I felt that the overall emotional tug was such it could clear the highest benchmarks, was saying it throughout yesterday as well. Aamir is just in a different league altogether, has been for very long in every sense imaginable. Certainly since Ghajini he’s set the box office pace as well and no one has overtaken him on absolute totals in all this time. Having said that since I’m not in the business of denials like many here what Salman has done since Dabanng is pretty extraordinary too and given his frequency I certainly don’t have a problem with anyone putting him up there with Aamir. I also understand how with a certain mass-oriented cinema and with a greater frequency many might have the sense he’s the biggest star (clearly the audience doesn’t completely buy this, otherwise what explains the Dangal initial?). One can have a reasonable debate about this. But Aamir has really had everything going for him for a number of years. And it also seems ridiculous to keep saying frequency when the man comes up with Ghajini, 3I, PK, D3, now Dangal (still early days of course). Specially when no one else can really catch him on those totals even on their best days (Bajrangi, Sultan). In any case it’s these two and everyone else at the moment.

Again not rubbing this in as an Aamir fan or something. But one must be able to agree on obvious things.

    • Demonization is an academic excuse. Agreed…whatever little impact it has had here is overall not going to massively impact the story. The narrative really is another feather in Aamir’s cap against the odds. I have little problem too with Salman being declared the #1. It’s all academic again. His position is less secure as predominantly in this run he has the hot opening. The content is dicey. Aamir can toggle between the two. If he wants Ghajini/D3 film he knows he’ll be able to get the opening and with decent content he’ll grab records. The WOM / content type film be it PK or 3 Idiots he can do it that way too at a slog. He can play T20 or Test or ODI. Salman plays T20 or ODI and only BB / Sultan showed staying power. Aamir has better options and he still is the top star at picking scripts and most of the time he gets it right.

Dangal has had a huge Saturday with collections set to be around 34 crore nett as per early estimates with the film showing a 20% increase in collections from Friday and the total in two days will be around 63 crore nett plus. The continued its extraordinary collections in the North while the rest of the country was also excellent. The places that were not so huge on Friday like Gujarat and West Bengal picked up well on Saturday but can still improve a lot. The collections at many multiplexes of Delhi NCR and East Punjab saw all time records, in another words they recorded the highest ever collections for a single day beating likes of Main Prem Ki Deewani, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and PK.

There is a holiday for Christmas tomorrow and it will boost the film a little from a normal Sunday but it would have been great if Christmas fell on Monday as that would enable the film to get real benefit of the holiday. Also the film is reaching capacity levels at multiplexes where it is very strong so if it is to get that big holiday growth on Sunday it will have come from smaller city multiplexes and single screens.

The growth on Saturday of around 20% is excellent and this has ensured a blockbuster film as when such growth comes on Saturday on such a wide release it means there will be a hold on Monday though at what level will only be known on Monday evening.

    Dangal – 29.78 crore
    PK – 27 crore
    Kick – 26.52 crore
    M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story – 21.3 crore
    Dabangg 2 – 21 crore
    Dilwale – 21 crore
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – 19.45 crore
    Fan – 19.2 crore
    Ek Villain – 16.7 crore

What is noticeable about this is the fact that in this list, Aamir Khan tops with each of the three releases – Dhoom:3, Dangal and PK. This pretty much establishes the fact that at least when it comes to the opening day numbers, Aamir Khan hasn’t relied on a holiday. That said, he smartly brings his films around the time when holiday season is about to kick-start, what with each of these films arriving around Christmas and then leveraging from the festive and celebration season that goes way into the New Year as well.

Ditto for Salman Khan who brought his Kick and Dabangg 2 around Eid and Christmas respectively, hence benefitting in the weekdays instead of the opening day. Shahrukh Khan too has a couple of films in there, Dilwale and Fan, and in terms of pure non-holiday release it was the latter that was at disadvantage considering the fact that the second week for Dilwale stepped into the Christmas season. M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story had Gandhi Jayanti falling on Sunday which negated the holiday advantage and the only two other films that didn’t have an advantage of a single day were Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Ek Villain.

That said, the list is primarily dominated by those in the business [Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan] who have been around for over 25 years, which makes it even sweeter for young blood like Sushant Singh Rajput [M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story], Ranbir Kapoor [Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani] and Sidharth Malhotra/Riteish Deshmukh [Ek Villain] to find themselves into the list.

Dangal about to set the single day record

    http://boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?articleid=2582

Dangal seems set to create history on Sunday and smash all box office records with the highest single day collections a Hindi film has ever recorded. The record stands at 39.32 crore nett by Prem Ratan Dhan Payo last year. This collection is just for the Hindi version and the dubbed versions added 45 lakhs nett for that film and Dangal also has dubbed versions. Dangal is flirting with the 40 crore nett mark on Sunday and the target of the Hindi version will be that 39.32 crore nett record of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. It was 2012 when Ek Tha Tiger hit the 30 crore nett mark and since then many films had potential to pull out that 40 crore nett day but failed for various reasons. Sultan was unlucky earlier this year as Eid fell a day late leaving Muslim centres not performing as they should on its first day.

The 40 crore nett day is a big benchmark and if Dangal achieves it then it will follow films like Ek Tha Tiger 2012 (first to 30 crore nett day), Bodyguard 2011 (first to 20 crore nett day), Ghajini 2008 (first to 10 crore nett day), Krrish 2006 (first to 5 crore nett day), Fanaa 2006 (first to 4 crore nett day, Veer Zaara 2004 (first to 3 crore nett day), Kabhi Khushi Gham 2001 (first to 2 crore nett day) and Trimurti 1995 (first to 1 crore nett day).

It will mean it has taken exactly 21 years (by coincidence Trimurti was released on Christmas 1995) to get to 1 crore nett to 40 crore nett for box office collections in a day. It will be Mumbai circuit that decides whether its a record or 40 crore nett plus as the early figures from North suggest 40 crore nett plus but they are driving the film and a big jump in Gujarat / Saurashtra will be crucial.

Most of the time I see only Naveen puts level headed comments consistently. There is no denying that Aamir was, is the first actor to break 100,150,200,250,300 cr barrier and hopefully 40 cr day mark. But Aamir fans need relax a bit. Every Khan (among 3) is unique in its way.
1 – SRK..Most consistent star of it not all time then certainly in last 3 decade. Tell me one Actor who is in among Top 3 almost 20 years. Half the time no-1
2- Salman..A late surge never seen before in indian cinema. Tell me one actor who deliverd monster hit after 40 years. Number of films and monster buisness with so called sub standerd films.
3- Few films but quality product with record breaking buisness.

And one more thing to Aamir fans. Don’t write off SRK yet. He is getting his brand value back with Filmslike Fan, Raees and Rehnuma. He is not out of the race yet. Right now he is down but certainly not out.

when you say that you immediately lose your audience! ‘Of all time’? Let’s be serious..

as for the rest yeah Aamir fans need to relax like SRK and Salman fans…

incidentally on Salman I’ve made that point myself.. that no star has had his absolute best career phase that late.. but unusual and remarkable as that is this doesn’t mean you suddenly start resetting the clock at 45 for everyone!

      Like

      • But there’s also an interesting point to be made here. It’s precisely because Salman wasn’t delivering monster hits when he was younger or precisely because he did not have this sort of phase then that he could reinvent himself. Much as because SRK was so iconic in the 90s and tied to certain genres that he has been struggling to reinvent himself. Of course you always need some luck in these matters. But the point is that you can’t do it at every stage in the same way. If you’re tied to a genre you exhaust yourself one way or the other. There are no exceptions to this.

Secondly it’s also about magnitude and not just longevity or what age one gets hits and so on. My classic example here is Rajesh Khanna. For three to four years he was God. he then had an extraordinary fall. But hey no one other than Bachchan has known that kind of run! To put it in context it’s like taking everything Salman has done between Dabanng and Sultan, compressing it in three years and then multiplying it by a certain factor. Even this sounds reductive because Rajesh Khanna was an absolute culture unto himself.

  134. In Dangal, Aamir the actor triumphs and this is as honest as one can get while doing a movie. This is Hollywood level of perfection where irrespective of the subject matter they transport us to their own woven world of ‘make belief’ for those few hours when the light goes dim in the theater.

The word ‘game changer’ has been used so often since Dangal has released and in my opinion for Bollywood it’s a lesson in ‘honesty’
( if they are willing to comply) which is the actual game changer here. The reason we as audience are deprived of good movies is not anything else but bollywood’s obsession with anything but the content of the movie whether it is ‘crony casting (don’t know if there is such a word), PR management, hyped advertising and over zealous promotions etc. Bollywood wastes so much time planning and plotting marketing /clashing and only if they just let the movie talk ……rest all will fall in place and as per me this simple lesson is a game changer.

Aamir, short of words for epic Dangal, still have to learn a lot. God bless!

Dangal looking at promo, genre and low key marketing would do max 80-100cr at best with any other star or actor but here it is aamir’s honesty and reliability in staying true to subject matter that brings people to theater in hordes.

Contrary to what many say here Sultan had simply no effect on Dangal even though it released later, but same cannot be said about Sultan if it came later and imo Sultan would suffer due to obvious comparisons because Dangal is flawles in the craft ……that is the most I will concede and aamir fans should take that as a compliment….rest Salman remains a top draw and his Sultan smashed the ball out of the park with much more ease !!!

  136. “But unusual and remarkable as that is this doesn’t mean you suddenly start resetting the clock at 45 for everyone”

No…We have to start resetting the clock at 45 because like in life or in any field everything has a shelf life. Especially in cinema where good looks play major part 45 is a deadly phase. Around this time you start looking horrible. Remember Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh bachchan and how they look at this (45) age and how they were performing at that time. Salman has not only maintained his looks despite many controversy and unhealthy life style still giving monster hits with weak product. And this ,my friend, is unbliveable.
    ——————————————————————————
“SRK..Most consistent star of it not all time then certainly in last 3 decade.when you say that you immediately lose your audience! ‘Of all time’? Let’s be serious”

That is why after writing all time i wrote last 3 decade. Before SRK we have Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh who have seen unprecedent superstardom. Dilip kumar had long innings but volume of films is very less. Rajesh khanna we all know is from 1969 to 1973. Amitabh had 10 years (1975-1985) like no one ever had or will be. (Though Salman current phase in somehow compareble). Salman had a good initial years but from 1999 to 2009 (till Wanted) he had a very dull phase. Aamir has very few big hits till 2006. So it leaves us to SRK who delivered big hits consistently from 1993 to 2013. Even now only Salman and Aamir are ahead of SRK. Though gap is quite wide and SRK is distent third.

  138. Dangal Has Huge Weekend – ALL TIME RECORD Sunday
    Monday 26 December 2016 10.30 IST

Dangal had a fantastic weekend of around 104 crore nett apprx helped by an extraordinary Sunday (Christmas Day) where it smashed all box office records to record the highest single day ever and be the first film to go over 40 crore nett in a single day. The film showed excellent growth on Sunday of around 20% as being a big national day it was slightly better than a normal Sunday but the film would have benefited more if Christmas Day had fallen on any other day especially a weekday. Despite setting a national record it was still not the highest collection ever in Mumbai as the first day of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was bigger and so was the third day of PK but in the North it smashed records by leaps and bounds. The weekend business of Dangal (Hindi) is as follows.

    Friday – 29,14,00,000
    Saturday 34,00,00,000
    Saturday – 40,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,03,89,00,000 apprx

The film is a blockbuster and it is down to the weekdays as to how big of a blockbuster the film becomes, there are no official holidays in the weekdays but it is a very good period for collections between Christmas and the New Year which gives Dangal a chance to rack big numbers till next Sunday.

The film also released in Tamil and Telugu and the collections are not impressive at all though the Tamil version showed a good trend from low levels so that may hold up well for a couple of weeks. The Telugu version is very poor.

        • You and Krishh are like the BO experts here: but what I gathered here is, the WOM is strong; i.e. EVERYONE is going to recommend this to EVERYONE..but would that be enough? In the sense that what is more statistically important to reach the bench-mark? REPEAT viewing or just strong WOM where it’s a trickle-down effect? I recommend it to you, you recommend it to some-one else, and so on..

Sorry if this is a naive question, but I am not wise in such discussions…

        • WOM is key IMO. The repeat viewing for me is just a consequence. No film can have one without the other, on TV yes but in cinema I doubt it. Seems dissection of information from a lot sources is critical, no one source has great information. But it appears that the slow start in interiors has now changed, it’s doing well there too which is important but not essential for Aamir. His following is mainly multiplexes so I’d be surprised given its trend so far that it does not at minimum go past Sultan.

I’ve only read one Mon report and it’s not ideal source…it states the drop to Friday is around 10% and ticket prices are same. Basically Monday could be in 23-25cr range which is 10%+ any non holiday Monday record. So film is outlier hard to predict final total from here.

It would take quite a random event now to stop 300cr and IT IS officially challenging ALL TIME records. Mere fact many here are going repeat viewing is a curveball IMO but not harmful news. Repeat viewing and the likely news that some states will give tax exemption will only increase chances. Any spreadsheet is pointless…no Xmas recently enough has fallen this way & this guys films defy usual trends.

        • A quick add-on. Aamir is NEVER the biggest star, he is just the biggest star using his brains at moment. His dedication to delete his 90’s model and replace it with getting involved in all aspects of filmmaking is something to be applauded. And the Xmas debate is stupid. Which distributor or production house or exhibitor would in their right mind take Xmas away from him. His record is impeccable and he is delivering in an emphatic way. No one can challenge his panache for striving to give the best film possible. That he falters is nothing, his fail rate is less than anyone out there. He deserves Xmas, he delivers the goods & he is the industry’s Santa.

On your WOM point I think it works everywhere it’s live on any medium. Mouth, paper, phone, social media, blogs anything and everything. It all counts. And just HIS own WOM is his stardom point ie you say Aamir’s done it again ppl and cinegoers believe you.

His only manipulation in film sense is making a good film! And his shrewdest act is he’s not only got his fans believing this but most cinegoers.

        • Even on fri when some of the anecdotal evidence seemed mixed I was quite confident that this film’s emotional tug would be huge. But the numbers have nonetheless been extraordinary. Specially the sun number. For a film in this genre to start clearing these highest benchmarks is quite stunning even if not unexpected for Aamir. Also think this film overshadows every thing else for a while. So unless one of the Republic Day releases is huge ( 200 or something ) it just won’t seem special after this kind of acclaim and performance. The pressure on Raees is even greater in some ways. The trailer looks good but for all out masala the bar is just too high. At least if one wants to compete with the big boys. This is also where the film’s would have done well to avoid the competition.

Dangal become the third film to cross 100 crore nett in India in three days. This feat was first achieved by Bajrangi Bhaijan last year and then Sultan earlier this year. The top three were all Salman Khan starrers until Dangal and now Aamir Khan has split them and its three each for Aamir Khan and Salman Khan Khan among the top six. Dangal is the biggest opening weekend ever for an Aamir Khan starrer. If the dubbed versions are included then the weekend is the highest ever at around 106.75 crore nett. North India has seen records shattered for the weekend and Sunday was simply extraordinary especially East Punjab due to the Haryana setting of the film. Below are the all time top ten opening weekends of all time.

Dangal has had an extraordinary hold on Monday with collections set to be around 24 crore nett. The multiplexes and smaller centes came on board on Sunday and have consolidated very well on Monday. The collections at smaller centres are similar to Friday while big cities have fallen around 20%. this is mainly because the of a reduction in ticket rates and footfalls are actually similar to Friday. The smaller centres having same collections as Friday also means similar footfalls to Friday as most of these are dominated by single screens and they have ticket rates similar to Friday. The four day collection of Dangal (Hindi) will in the 128 crore nett region .

Underestimate this man’s films at your peril. As Tony Montana says this is as much a defeat for the industry then a victory. It shows the fragility and lack thereof of trying damn hardest to make the best film possible. It should never be about churn or quantity. That is not a remark against any member or fan of an actor. There will always be a gap between such films and those that have big initials and fizzle out. We see this elsewhere too. Smaller films that trend very well or even sometimes films in between. But barring smaller films it doesn’t happen very often because of course it’s just easier to rely on an initial and minimal safety.

Plus humour and growth of children accesses family audience. It’s clear now the interiors are starting to take to the film.

We’ve compared the wrong film. This to me sounds like Aamir’s Gadar. Not in terms of trending, it won’t have a 25 week run etc but seems it has swept the nation now & really nailed it. He always has the multiplexes convinced, this time it took a couple of days and interiors are going for it. If the Tuesday numbers are what cooldude are predicting this is 3 Idiots week 1 level stuff. It’s got 3 weeks & OK Jaanu won’t harm much so it’s got till the big Jan republic day showdown. Even then given the national theme it could be stable. This is not even factoring in the tax advantages, which will be deserved. Definitely great news for Aamir and his fans but at the same time its pretty disappointing as well. Do we have such shortage of good scripts among bigger releases that only one star keeps breaking his own records? Any other sensible industry by now mustve taken cue from Aamir’s releases and focused more on choosing foolproof scripts from aspiring screenplay writers instead of relying solely on their stars and multi million marketing campaigns. No wonder the industry is slowly going bankrupt.

  154. Speaking about the clash with SRK starrer Raees, Hrithik was recently quoted saying that, “It’s not illegal or unethical so it’s fine. But it is sad and quite an eye opener that although Hollywood and Bollywood share the same calendar, you will never see Batman movies clashing with Superman films or Lord of the Rings clashing with Harry Potter. They manage their calendars so well that two movies will never clash. They are aware that that is best for the industry, because when two films clash. the returns for the industry fall a lot.”
He adds that, “Hopefully, both films will do well, but on the whole, it will be a loss of about 100 crores for the industry as compared to both films releasing individually. My father understands that and he was sad about that, and he thinks that it could have been managed in a better way, but we completely understand that Raees was in the waiting for far too long.”

He added, “My wish is that when both films do well, Shah Rukh Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Dad, myself and everyone will pop champagne and celebrate for each other.”

    • He makes some sense later on. Kind of chuckled at his Hollywood comparison though. Roshans have a HUGE ego. Their humbled behaviour demeanor is masking a smugness much like papa’s twitter picture. I don’t like them. #Raeesallthewayforme. I would bet serious money that Kangana has been wronged not Hrithik. And willing to give everything away in exchange for Papa’s calculator to prove his fraudness!

      • Wow. That’s a surprising point of view. I can understand the Papa Roshan’s calculator thing but I have rarely seen HR indulge in undignified behavior. Probably his only major fault probably has been in not being as talented as his dad thinks or we want. I would not even pretend to know what the true story behind Kanagana episode is except that whole thing seems rather far fetched and weird and that Kangana is one weird person.

Much of stems as you say from the day 1 expectations on Hrithik. It hasn’t materialised as thought. Saying nice things about fellow colleagues is the norm in Bollywood, behind this there is always politics at play.

While this has resulted in the film emerging as a super success already, what is all the more remarkable is the fact that it has gone past the lifetime numbers of 24 other films that are in the 100 Crore Club. Dangal was the 49th film to score a century ever since the term 100 Crore Club was coined and with these massive numbers coming in, it has now found a place amongst the Top-25 All Time Grossers already.

In fact after today, the film would go past the lifetime total of films like Singham Returns [140 crore], Dabangg [140 crore], M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story [133.5 crore] and Rowdy Rathore [133 crore]. That would allow it to be at Number 18 on this list in just 5 days.

      • some of the stuff about the Sholay opening has been exaggerated. It opened fine but expectations were even greater. More than this though for a week or so those in the trade weren’t sure how people were reacting to this. Including the producer. After a while they caught on that the film is working. So yes the trade did carry articles with headlines like ‘damp squib’. But that was always far from the truth.

Of course no film can trend like Sholay, no film did so even. But yes what is true is that you can have all those jubilees either. The real point people miss though is that no one’s expecting that. But Aamir-like trending for big films is surely not too much to expect? The other big films just don’t do this. And there’s no Aamir mystery here except for the fact that he has great judgment. But it goes even beyond this. If you select good scripts you can use your judgment in the execution. A lot of his scripts are extraordinary in the sense of having a unique idea. But they’re very well-executed. The other stars don’t even start off with the right scripts. The strongest initials in the world cannot make up for this factor. And beyond the scripts it’s about making genuine films. The problem is Bollywood hardly ever makes genuine films. With the other stars it’s not that you see very interesting films that don’t work because of the script or something. they’re just poor films to begin with. Sometimes they’re entertaining enough and survive enough. Couple with a big initial you get a big total. But these aren’t truly liked films in any reasonable sense. Some of us have been making this point for years. the problem is people in the trade, box office sites, fans etc all play games for partisan reasons, cherry-picking numbers, using all kinds of data very selectively, imagining stuff and offering theories accordingly, so on and so forth. It’s therefore not enough to say something like the ‘Aamir factor’. Because there’s something very rational behind it. Finally I’d say that reading scripts or devoting time to this is undervalued, certainly in Bollywood. Aamir’s probably the sort of guy who’s reading a lot of scripts. You have to keep doing this to get the right one. On the other hand if you just pre-decide on a certain kind of film and/or director or whatever you are never seeing a lot of good stuff. And ultimately there’s some risk involved. So Aamir playing an old guy for most of the film. And no matter how good things look, no matter how consistent Aamir might be these scripts are never a sure thing.

      • Sholay opened to record breaking response …. it was just bad reviews which worried makers.

See this snippet from BOI :

        Q. Sholay celebrated 40 years last week and all reports suggest it was a disaster on release and was nearly taken off cinemas but with such a film can this be the case?
Ans. No. The opening was historic beating the previous record holder Roti Kapada Aur Makaan by 35% on weekend collections. At the two time there were two trade magazines and in usual style they had declared the film a flop to disaster as the reviewers in these magazines did not like the film. This was where the disaster thing came from, the collections told a different story. In Bengal trade these guys were referred as blind even before Sholay was released. The film opened on 15 Aug 1975 on 40 theatres in Mumbai circuit, 32 in Mumbai city and 8 in Ahmedabad. It collected 7,52,362 from these 40 theatres over the weekend, every single show was housefull. There was a slight issue on the weekdays in Mumbai city as the film was not going full in advance and current booking was open probably because it was a dacait action film and in Mumbai it was the non action films like Bobby and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan which were creating history till Sholay happened. Stiil it ended with 96% collections over the week. On 22 Aug 1975, it opened in East Punjab to miracle collections as the theatre rentals were nearly covered by the extra seats that exhibitors had to put in the theaters. It recorded 118% occupancy over the week. East Punjab was an action circuit, the same happened again in October 1975 when it opened in Delhi/UP and East India.

When it first released all those years ago in 1975, Sholay, that now-iconic film was thought to be a total flop show. The morning after the premiere, people were calling the film ‘Chholey’ and saying that it had a cast of ‘teen maharathi aur ek chooha’ (three warriors and a mouse) and insisted that Indians did not like films like this one. Even the black marketeers were saying that the strange story was a second-rate take-off of Mera Gaon Mera Desh, which was a super-duper hit. There was panic, with Ramesh Sippy considering – though only for a little while – that he could redo the ending to see that Jai did not die; after all, Amitabh Bachchan was already a huge star, too big to die. Amjad Khan believed that he had failed, being criticised as having no presence and no voice, film journalist Anupama Chopra says in her new book, First Day First Show. And then, a few days later, a miracle happened – people were lining up outside the theatres to see Sholay. Ten weeks after it was released, the film was declared a superhit. And Gabbar Singh, the man who asked in his squeaky-gravelly voice, “Kitne aadmi the?” became the star of the show, the hero of every child across the country.

        • yes lots of journalists have fed the myth over the decades.. doesn’t make it accurate. And again as the piece Yakuza put up shows the Bombay advance wasn’t as strong as elsewhere on weekdays. It makes for a nice story because everything associated with Sholay is so legendary that this bit about being very poor initially and then becoming the biggest ever film adds to the narrative. At a smaller level these kinds of stories are there about many films. For years we’ve seen Taran and Komal say all sorts of things in the media that are clearly false (in very many cases they have themselves categorized things differently in their trade journals). Anyway are you going to believe Sippy or these other guys? Clearly he doesn’t have any reason after all these decades with Sholay being the kind of central Indian film that it has become since to start lying about the initial!

What an era that was! No video, so no piracy. The only way to see a movie was in the cinema. Prints were expensive, hence they were staggeringly distributed from A class centers to B class then C, so on and so forth. No TV, so no ads. The only trailors were to be seen in the cinema. WOM came from trade magazines and newspapers. Hardly anyone had phone sets to call and inform friends and family. Snailmail (ie postal letters) were the form of communication. No social media!

So when the uncle from Mumbai visited some inner city in MP, he would bring news of the fantastic sight n sound n experience of Sholay. And everyone would wait for the print to arrive into that inner city. Many on this blog, including me, have lived through those times, and yet now being used to our modern tech, seems unfathomable to wrap my mind around that era.

…..those days the only way one could get hold of a movie ticket was to stand in long never ending lines esp the big multi starrer blockbusters required queuing up since early morning or so with all the pushing / shoving…..not to forget all the sweat & body odor. Tickets were fairly cheap so there were all stratas of society within those lines. I still hate my elder brothers who used to leave me in line as a kid and come just before ticket windows opened.
Not only would they avoid standing in line, but also avoid the embarrassment of being caught by known faces and seem desperate to watch a “Hindi” movie. Those days unwritten rule was that first few weeks were reserved for rickshawallah and tangawallas….civilised families watched movie 1-2 month after the release. Also remember having a ‘muh boli’ sister as a take along to buy movie tickets to make use of shorter/ civilized lines for ladies with some sort of surety that we would get tickets.

There used to be so much rush for Bachchan movies and all that shoving and pushing would invariably break those lines so every few hours a well built guard would come and mark ink ( like they do for voters ) on the index finger of the first 100/200 or so in order to verify the lines are maintained till box office opens.

Calcutta was our vacation city but there was always mad rush for movies there….only consolation was cheaper movie tickets than other cities so parents would not mind us watching couple of them. The cheapest ticket in Paradise, Calcutta was Rs 2.50 for Stalls in 80s….

Shortage and ‘maraamari’ for tickets also resulted in watching a lot movies by default. If we could not get the tickets for the movies we came for, then would rush to nearby theater to watch the other one so as to not spoil our fun mood plus we travelled all the way and paid for conveyance etc.

Remember watching Andha Kanoon by default as it was playing at nearby Mahaan which was the original choice but always running houseful …….rest as they say is history… Mahaan was such a bore but AK turned out fully paisa vasool with Jan Nisar Akhtar Khan shouting at the top of his lung…..duniya ka koi kanoon ek jurm ki do baar saza nahin de sakta……!!!! (as kids that was such a new thing to hear or revelation/novelty whatever one may call )

        • I don’t quite agree with this. There are of course different reasons for this. screens are part of the deal. In those days the release was also staggered though. Films generally didn’t release everywhere at the same time. Also for some decades now videos, then satellite TV and so on have eaten into the business. However it is also the case that cinema was ‘experience’ in those days. Those weren’t films that people were trying to avoid in the theaters. So yes there was video technology but this also happened at a time when the quality of films in the 80s went drastically downhill anyway. Today when it’s basically about junk entertainment and given all these other factors people find these things ‘missable’. So it’s content but also the ticket prices these days. Just too expensive a proposition to watch a film in he right theaters. Only a small percentage can go in for multiple viewings. The economics of Bollywood has shrunk the market primarily for these reasons. Yes you still wouldn’t get films running for 6 months and so on but you could certainly get a lot more Aamir-like results. and by the way smaller films when they do well prove this point. If people are willing to show up for a good small film that is hardly the height of ‘theatrical’ experience why wouldn’t they do so for much more mainstream films with bigger stars? Much as the moment masala came back the grosses suddenly became much bigger. Before this people used to argue that numbers weren’t possible beyond a point. Or that you couldn’t get more than 60 or more than 100 or more than 200. Till it happened! This comparison is therefore a straw man one. Given India’s population Hindi cinema is still ‘forgetting’ most of its market. Even today Telugu or Tamil cinema does way better with its potential movie-going audience. Meanwhile in Bombay people still say absurd stuff like ’40 crores is capacity crowd’ or whatever. The world has of course changed since the 70s. But everything can’t be justified using this argument.

Tonymontana brought up an interesting point in his post above….why is Aamir Khan the only guy who is breaking his own record. Why can’t the rest of the bollywood learn from him? The problem is that hindi industry (like many others) is a star driven industry. Right now we have two mega stars in Aamir and Salman. Aamir is all about content even if he stars in some underwhelming movie like Dhoom 3. Salman is all about Salman. Every movie that he does is about showcasing his star power. People love him and he will keep doing the same thing for a while. SRK is in a weird position. He is not doing record breaking stuff but he is still a force. A distant third in my opinion. He is trying to figure out the type of movie he needs to do which will take him past 300 CR. Everyone else is just topping 100 CR (or a rare 150) on any given movie. The reason Aamir stands out is because he has built this content based fan following over the last 25 years (really in the last 15 years post Lagaan). When an Aamir movie is announced, EVERYONE knows that the MOVIE itself will a worthy watch. Not necessarily because Aamir is IN it..because Aamir takes a while choosing his scripts so it must be something special. I really believe that in the near future, Aamir THE DIRECTOR will open a movie just based on his name even if he was not part of the movie. This is how much people trust him now. Until and unless we have more stars (current and upcoming) gain people’s trust for their script sense and not just for their presence, the BO will keep running this way. Same thing will happen in 2017. Raees and Kaabil will both make 100 or somewhere around it but nothing great. Salman will do his thing with Tubelight in Eid and with Tiger Zinda hai in Christmas. A movie here or there might surprise us (like Tanu Weds Manu Returns) but majority of the movies will just come and go. I don’t see things changing anytime soon.

The collections are steady all over with North India continiung its phenomenal run. the way the film is going in Delhi / UP and East Punjab its looking certain that these two circuits will be record breaking and record the highest lifetime collections ever. The first tax exemption of the film came through on Tuesday as centres in Haryana went tax free which will ensure strong hold going forward in Haryana. There will be other states that will follow and crucially UP could be tax free soon and this state has very high entertainment tax.

    • getting the biggest total isn’t everything. Sure it’s remarkable that Aamir keeps posting such big (and biggest) numbers but it’s come to the point where even a very good film is important only to the degree that it becomes that kind of money spinner. That is pretty much the only conversation most people have about a film. And the same is true for other kinds of films too. before release it’s about how many crores a film can do, after release about how many it did or did not, this is all there is. I too follow the box office quite closely but it shouldn’t be the only discussion around. I’m not of course counting those who suddenly think the box office is irrelevant when their favorite stars don’t put up big numbers. Dangal is a very worthwhile film, a very moving film. One can like it less or more but it seems a shame to only talk about the box office in the context of this film. Again I too like following numbers but there are lots of other discussions one can have on the film as well. At least if it’s something like D3 I can understand it being only about the box office. But with a more meaningful film one should try and focus on other aspects as well.

    1) Sallu’s Sultan not only will be beaten in terms of BO but in terms of content and quality of the film as a whole – reminds me of Aamir’s conviction during RDB where before its release 3 films on Bhagat Singh were released in the same year but he was unfazed…..
    2) SRK’s Raees and Hritik’s Kaabil are just round the corner and none of them will cross 150 cr imo – and even their rants that both released simultaneously will do little to hide their non-credibility to pull the crowds to theater …….which automatically takes aamir inches nearer to Mega-stardom which Rajni and Big B enjoyed??

    • In 2006, with RDB, Aamir at least had 2-3 years to improvise from the previous Bhagat Singh biopics. But in 2016, it was clearly a case of being blindsided and shellacked by Sallu-YRF’s Sultan shenanigans. It was quite obvious that they stole the idea of wrestling just to do a one-up on Aamir. The final patch-up product shows the lack of prep with the sole intention of cashing in on Sallu’s physique and image. They did manage to derive some emotional connect and with the Eid Holidays, managed the 300cr figure.
Everyone thought that coming just a short 3 months after Eid, the loss of novelty would severely diminish Dangal. But the quality and content of Dangal has grabbed the audiences by their necks and brought them into the theaters. The question to be pondered is, what if there were no Sultan?? Would Dangal with the preserved novelty have opened with much bigger numbers?

      • Very clearly, the absence of a biggest grosser bothered Sallu since long. Until the emergence of a 100cr club, his own HAHK stood as the pinnacle of BO success. But after the industry started giving the goldstar treatment to 100cr, and his own success series starting with Dabang, each successive Aamir hit bothered him. He openly lamented ETT not crossing 200crs. Then he got satiated with Kick, but found himself below D3 and PK. He got BB and a bag full of excuses on Holidays and whatnot for not having beaten it. Finally, he seems to have decided that the only way to beat Aamir is to out-Aamir Aamir. Thus was born S-U-L-T-A-N. Saala, mere paas body already hai, to yeh wrestling kya cheez hai. Get a hot actress, few song-dance routines, action, lights camera.. boom 300crs and the certainty to finally beat Aamir in a calendar year.
        Ab kya hoga Sallu bhai?

And I don’t see any generosity in Salman’s gesture of seeing the film and praising. He did so only when it was obvious as the sun that the film was a spectacular critical success, but had conquered the boxoffice too, and become a craze. He knew there was no stopping the film, and hence he decided to come out and support it anyway (because it won’t matter now). But do remember, he did not tweet one complimentary thing about Dangal before its release, even though he tweeted about DZ and Raees. Why so? My guess is that, he was clearly hoping, infact expecting that Dangal would underperform. But when that didn’t happen, he came on board anyway.

        • As I recollect, Salman remained silent on Dangal for a long time, so much so that it started appear obvious that he had no goodwill towards the film. Many celebrities had started tweeting about the film as early as October, but Salman probably thought it was empty PR and shrugged off the initial hype Dangal got. Then, he waited some more, and saw the film being hailed by critics. Again, he probably thought it would get critical success but not match Sultan’s numbers. Only when he saw that the film was getting unparalleled praise from each and everyone, and the BO was spectacular, did he speak up. I guess he saw the film on Sun? By then, the film was already a blockbuster.

Nice to see the blog is back to discussing Salman / Sultan instead of Dangal.

Btw, I will suggest Aamir fans should just relish / savor this moment to the fullest….and stop comparing / cribbing about Sultan. Next Aamir phenomenon is far far away – a good 4-5 years away , may be 2020 or later….

P.S: I am discounting yrf 2018 ‘Thugs of Hindoostan’ where the subject matter / Aamir’s get up is giving OTT acting vibes and not up his alley (…la mangal panday ). I tried to read summary of the novel ‘Confessions of a Thug’ and the thugeee/ piracy background seems like a total non starter in Indian set up and with ‘Bachchan of 2016’ added to the cast will be more a congregation of overacting ki dukaan

Folks Dangal honeymoon period is over and let the fan wars begin!!! 🙂 🙂

  173. It is good if boxoffice numbers match the critical appreciation. That means almost total success. When a good film falls short of a couple of crores, it always gets the tag of semi hit. As for superstardom, it is a subjective assessment. If superstardom means a star pulling in audience by just his or her name, aamir is a superstar. Well, he has to struggle more. Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom is the one which cant be matched. He was an average actor but the ultimate charmer of those times. And his films are still enjoyed by families.

  174. To bring this further in perspective, if one looks at the All Time Biggest Week One, Dangal is already in the Top-10 even though it has been theaters for *just 5 days*. This is how the highest first week collections (first 7 days) of all time look like:

    Sultan – 208.82 crore
    Dhoom: 3 – 188 crore
    Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 184.62 crore
    PK – 183 crore
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – 165.45 crore
    Kick – 164.21 crore
    Dangal – 155.53 crore
Happy New Year – 152 crore
    Chennai Express – 149.96 crore
Ek Tha Tiger – 137.15 crore

As things stand today, Dangal is all set to cross the first week collections of Dhoom: 3 too by tomorrow and emerge as the second highest Week One of all times just after Sultan. Now that would be remarkable indeed as the Aamir Khan starrer would manage that without any holiday whatsoever while each of the other films in Top-10, right from Sultan to Ek Tha Tiger, was buoyed by a major holiday in its first 7 days run, be it Eid, Diwali or Christmas!

The man, who had trained the Phogat sisters ahead of their participation in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, is miffed with the makers for showing a character modelled after him in a negative light. Sondhi says he is aware that few fictional events were added to make the film entertaining, but it should not have been at his expense.

“They have changed the name to PR Kadam in the film, but somewhere the character is loosely based on my life. I have known Mahavirji (Phogat, wrestling coach and father of Geeta and Babita Phogat) for many years and he is a thorough gentleman. His two daughters have trained under me for more than three years and not once did he interfere. I don’t understand the need to show the character as such a taskmaster. There were four other coaches, who were also involved [in the training], but they haven’t been shown in the film at all,” he says.

The 70-year-old argues the film’s final scene is purely fictional – the coach is seen locking Mahavir in a room during the Games so that he is not able to cheer for his daughter. “Distortion of facts has hurt my reputation. Once I watch the film, I will speak to the wrestling federation. I also plan to meet Aamir and seek an explanation.”

Sondhi met Aamir in Ludhiana when he was shooting for the film there. “Kripa Shankar Bishnoi, who trained Aamir for Dangal, has been my student. When we all met, Aamir asked me general questions about wrestling, but not once did he discuss anything about the film. He should have told me how they were planning to portray the coach’s character,” he says.

Aamir Khan’s sports drama “Dangal” is not only having a good run at the box office, but is also getting critical acclaim for its content. Leading film critics have voted it as the Best Film of 2016.
As many as 23 critics got together to pick the best of Bollywood through poll — Film Companion Critics’ Poll.
Film Companion, a platform for cinematic content backed by critic Anupama Chopra, for the first time conducted a year-end poll. The results of the poll in five categories were announced in a statement.
“Dangal” — based on a true story of the inspiring and empowering journey of a father who trains his daughters in wrestling — was named as the Best Film.
The Best Director spot went to Ram Madhvani for bringing the story of Neerja Bhanot, the air hostess who sacrificed her life while saving passengers on board hijacked Pan Am flight 73 at Karachi, Pakistan, to the silver screen via his directorial debut “Neerja” this year.
Actor Manoj Bajpayee was named as the Best Actor for portraying the life of gay professor Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras in the film “Aligarh” with conviction.
Alia Bhatt impressed the critics with her acting skills and versatility in films like “Udta Punjab” and “Dear Zindagi”. She was named the Best Actress.
Shakun Batra and Ayesha Devitre Dhillon were named the Best Writers for “Kapoor & Sons (Since 1921)”.
The list of the critics who voted included Anupama, Rajeev Masand, Bharathi Pradhan, Saibal Chatterjee, Amol Parchure, Uday Bhatia, Namrata Joshi and Rahul Desai among others.

Except for the fact that it was releasing on the Christmas slot, there is not an iota of frill and fancy attached with this product. The vanity and sexiness in the conventional sense is missing too with unglamorous look of Sakshi Tanwar, unflattering crew cut to the female cast and an over bloated Aamir in a dusty yellow ganjee.

Now except for the fact, Sultan acting as a solid primer & getting the audience hooked onto akhadas & dangal, I don’t get this massive acceptance for such a low key project ? As usual aamir’s clever mind in letting Salman come early and do some groundwork for him seemed to have worked… 🙂 🙂

Nonetheless the confidence in Aamir at the moment seems at an unbelievable level and audience trusts him with their time & money. This one gets audience love, box office, critical acclaim…everything. However the only thing which is beyond aamir’s reach are the awards!!

I normally don’t comment when it comes to SULTAN hyperbole {ONLY the 2nd half of which I loved by the way} — but the above interpretation FAR from fact. I have seen that KWK episode. [As I mentioned in the other comment, it is quite clear that Aamir was the first who picked up the phone, and not the other way –

          Dangal trailers (updated)

What is said is that IN A PERVERSE WAY, if SULTAN comes first and is massive, THEN the people who have seen SULTAN might be tempted to watch DANGAL just to see ‘whether’ DANGAL has bettered SULTAN since folks feel it’s the same milieu. Now, that might be the case but it would be a VERY minuscule percentage: The reason for this is that Aamir has stamped quality on the minds of his fans and most of the general public and people ‘needing’ to compare Aamir’s work with a previous similar work from some other actor, especially Salman’s is just…wishful thinking.

Now I understand this might be twisted to say, ‘Hey, you were the one who protested that SULTAN could affect DANGAL.’ Please remember, I was ONLY talking of the novelty of ‘milieu.’

Shraddha Moves In With Lover Farhan, Papa Shakti Drags Her Back Home –

An explosive episode which took place at Farhan Akhtar’s apartment ended with Shakti Kapoor forcibly taking Shraddha Kapoor home.

This love story gathered lot of steam a week ago, and Shraddha Kapoor could not control herself from moving out with bag and baggage straight into her lover Farhan Akhtar’s apartment.

Shocked? But wait till you hear more.

The building guys started talking in hushed whispers that the Rock On 2 stars were finally ready to confirm their romance, and all that.

But Shraddha and Farhan’s bliss was short lived.

On Sunday, Shraddha’s doorbell rang. And she almost fainted when she opened the door.

The reel, and now real, villain Shakti Kapoor was standing right opposite her, his eyes red with rage.

Mausi Padmini Kolhapure (Shakti’s wife’s sister) was in tow.

The agenda was clear, they wanted Shraddha to quit the live-in arrangement and move back to the family home IMMEDIATELY.

  185. undisputed king of Hindi cinema.
He was the first superstar of Indian cinema and the only actor in Bollywood to have tasted super-stardom. On Rajesh Khanna’s 74th birth anniversary, Tamil star Kamal Haasan, who shared an incredible bond with Khanna, fondly shares tales of the time spent together.

“I refused to call him Kaka like everyone did. I was willing to call him Bade Bhaiyya or Mr Khanna. But not Kaka. That infuriated him… I was this ‘upcoming actor from the South’— that’s how he introduced me in Mumbai. He was the undisputed King of Hindi cinema,” recalls Haasan.

Actor Rajesh Khanna was fondly called, Kaka, by several fans and industry colleagues. He died on July 18, 2012 in Mumbai.
We spent a lot of time discussing cinema and life. He would sometimes get philosophical about the inconsequentiality of life
Since Khanna starred in remakes of South Indian films, he was often in Chennai. That’s how their friendship started. “We spent a lot of time discussing cinema and life. He would sometimes get philosophical about the inconsequentiality of life. Once we went to a movie together. It was a mediocre American film called The Swarm and I decided to take him to a theatre in the heart of Chennai. He didn’t know we were going to a public screening. He probably hadn’t been to a public theatre since he became a star. When we reached, things were okay. He enjoyed the film and refused to leave until the end titles. That’s when I panicked. This was Rajesh Khanna, the star of the millennium. If audiences got to know he was present, there’d be a stampede and blood on my hands. But Mr Khanna refused to listen. He stayed on till the end. The inevitable happened after the show. All hell broke loose, as audiences realised he was there. I became his bodyguard as I took him through the crowd. His shirt was torn. But he was enjoying himself thoroughly. He giggled and chuckled like a child.”

I never wanted to be a star. I observed him. Our friendship came to a sorry end at a party in his house where he was less than polite. But my friendship with Dimple is forever
Khanna’s wife, actor Dimple Kapadia, gave Haasan (her co-star in Sagar; 1985) a piece of her mind. “She wanted to know what was I thinking when I took him to a public screening. Anything could have happened.”

Haasan shares another incident, when one of his films, Sigappu Rojjakal, was remade as Red Rose, starring Khanna. One fine day the phone rang in his office. “This was the era of the landline phones. My personal assistant, a big Rajesh Khanna fan, was over the moon as God himself asked him about his wellbeing. Mr Khanna said his film’s mahurat was the very next day, and asked for me to send him the cap that I wore for my character, since he wanted to wear it at the mahurat and in the film. I agreed. Who (ever) said no to Rajesh Khanna! He also commanded me to be present at the mahurat. I protested saying I wasn’t needed. He insisted he wanted to introduce me as the upcoming star from the South.”

Anyway, the cap was sent from Chennai to Mumbai by hand delivery (there was no courier those days) by a man who unfortunately, turned out to be a fan of both the stars, and didn’t want to part with the precious cap.

“Mr Khanna was livid. ‘Since you were coming why couldn’t you just bring it with you?’ he said,” recalls Haasan, who was fascinated by Khanna’s aura. “I never wanted to be a star. I observed him. Our friendship came to a sorry end at a party in his house where he was less than polite. But my friendship with Dimple is forever. It’s like the lines from the immortal Geeta Dutt song, Beqaraar Dil Iss Tarah Miley Jiss Tarah Kabhi Hum Juda Na They. Whenever we meet, no matter how long the gap, it’s like we had never stopped meeting. I know we’ll remain friends for as long as we’re alive. My daughter (actor) Shruti (Haasan) will make sure of that. She’s even fonder of Dimple than I am.”

Dangal created history on its third day as it set an ALL TIME RECORD for the highest single day ever. It also become the first film ever to surpass the 40 crore nett mark in a day, four years after 30 crore nett was first surpassed by Ek Tha Tiger in 2012. The record was held by Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which it set last year. It held the record for over 13 months and still holds the record for the highest opening day of all time. New Delhi: Olympian Vinesh Phogat says, albeit in a lighter vein, that uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat was “10 times stricter” than the ‘bapu hanikarak’ Aamir Khan portrays in ‘Dangal’ , a movie based on the life of the well-known coach and his proteges. “He was 10 times more strict than what I have been told has been shown in the film. He was at a different level.
“And obviously, at the India camp, it is very different kind of training than what we learnt at home. Under tauji (uncle), it was exercise and strength training in the morning and mat training during evenings,” she said.
A Commonwealth Games medallist, Vinesh is a bit amused to find the kind of frenzy that the Khan starrer ‘Dangal’ has created with more people now wanting to know about Mahavir Phogat and his wrestler daughters and niece.

  192. ” Dangal ” Finally watched at the third attempt, what can I say..
Amir Khan has a ” Unique ” film here neither sultan or CDI or Lagaan to be compared with, its a totally different from these….
Amir Khan here is at his best, others like geeta and babita were awesome but second best..

Cinema was almost 90% occupancy and that is a record with the temperature outside last night was -2 celcius,by the time
the film finished at midnight and went to the car park my windscreen and the whole car covered with frost, good job I had a de-icer and wooly hat, poor mrs she was so excited that she was not prepared this situation..

Over all the DANGAL is be the best film of all films released in the last 3 years, second is bajirao mastani..
Whoever has not seen it yet then my advice is Go to nearest cinema and watch it…its lot of hard work gone into this film..

Amir Khan is on Different Level …DANGAL ROCKS…

  193. Aamir Khan‘s nail biting and anxiety paid off as Dangal opened to full theatres last week and is garnering appreciation from all quarters of the country. Apart from the talent treasure, Aamir, the film has been praised for its plot, and the phenomenal acting by the girls – Fatima Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra .

The film follows the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his journey of training two of India’s most acclaimed woman wrestlers, Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. What, then, was the reaction of the real life stars on watching themselves in reel life? Speaking to IndiaToday, Geeta Phogat (portrayed by Fatima Sheikh) revealed that she despised watching the scene when she wrestled against her own father, as it brought back bitter memories. She said:

I did not enjoy watching that scene a lot as I realised how I treated my father and that I started thinking that I am some pahalwan (heavyweight). I did not like that scene as I got emotional watching it. It is not that I wrestled only once with my father, he used to test us in the akhada often. But I loved watching the entire movie.
That particular scene was definitely an emotional ride!

Obviously nothing to beat that theatre experience of “Khoon Mein Tere Mitti” but a good print or TV screening will suffice and you’ll appetite /cravings for delicious masala food will increase. BB and Sultan are one of few movies Salman has made some efforts. Here is sample –

    Tujhse mera deen dharam hai
    Mujhse teri khudai
Main bhi naachun manau sohne yaar ko
    Chalun main teri raah bulleya

    …amazing music and moments !!!!

    • I shall one-day! In any case most reviews where comparisons have been made suggest Dangal was the main course to Sultan’s appetizer. The day I’m hungry for junk I’ll watch Salman films to appease you.

    • PS showing me a one expression Salman song is hardly inspirational stuff! Anushka at least displayed sadness, laughter and anguish!

      • PS 2 – you’re a one-man band at the moment. Also my arrogance or ignorance or whatever leads me to say this. Even if I was on my 99th watch of Dangal I am convinced Sultan will not match up or make things better for me. A lot of money will need to exchange hands more in the region of week 2 figures of Dangal then week 2 of Sultan. Money I suspect you don’t have.

        Now a trade.

I’ll watch BB again if you admit your political flawness in boycotting ADHM for Indo – Pak tie reasons but still rejoicing the coming of hands in BB at the Border.

        • Jay, with these comments you are giving me a free pass to bombard this blog with adverse reports on Dangal. I could start with Financial Express fudging report circulating , so please tread carefully.

On the Pak angle of BB – Every human longs for peace and love. That is why ‘Being Human’ is first and foremost.

ADHM had three strikes, so I cannot even think about watching it even if someone paid top dollars for that movie.

        • Exactly. It’s spin to make his appearance or relevance seem “neutral”. Even the Salman Khan rants last a day or two before he’s in love again.

        • The difference between a Salman Khan and Aamir Khan film.

For Salman, everyone claps in his entry scene.
For Aamir, everyone claps at the end of the film.
