Dangal (ongoing), the rest of the box office

    • good read.. one could reframe this argument in certain ways. The girls are born into a patriarchal world and they then pursue a patriarchal dream. However as the writer correctly points the very moment at which Mahavir decides his girls can take on his profession he brings about a disturbance in that set of patriarchal expectations. From that point on he has to face constant ridicule. This is a good example of how an otherwise problematic system can be used against itself. So on the one hand girls shouldn’t have to be better than boys at games made for boys. On the other hand in doing so they upset a lot of the ‘values’ or the ‘beliefs’ which sustain that sense of male superiority, specially in a patriarchal system.

But there is perhaps an even deeper point to be made. The film individualizes the girls fully, they are characters in the fullest sense. This is in fact the greatest subversion. When women as presented as types (even strong ones) a patriarchal system can account for this. So you can have the strongest goddesses and female historical figures (Rani of Jhansi etc) but the culture that accepts this also keeps peddling all kinds of other stereotypes about female abilities. There is no real contradiction here. Because goddesses and queens become exceptions to the rule. They are idealized figures (or at least that’s their popular reception). A ‘male’ economy can always account for this. However when female characters are individualized and to the degree where they can question a patriarchal system or even subvert it that’s when things become interesting. This is why the fight between Geeta and Mahavir is so important, so symbolically potent. Even if Geeta is acting out of pride, even of Mahavir is older, it’s important that she’s able to win. Much as the younger sisters are able to fool the father or subvert his system at points. And if Geeta realizes her mistake later it still involves a journey that she must complete on her own. Normally female characters in movies aren’t allowed this level of agency. or they are in subjects that are not very weighty. Or they tend to mimic male heroes (the female godfather, police officer etc). Here you also have the younger sister who is torn between the father and the sibling. It adds to the female dimension of the film. Now I don’t want to overrate things but my point is that whatever societal or historical forces an individual might be subject to he or she can often subvert it to a great degree (or at least to some degree) by letting all these different and often contradictory aspects of his or her personality to come forth. For instance what do we do quite often before when confronted with the unreasonable opinions of parents or such authority figures? We give in in different ways. If we don’t we’re considered impolite or unkind. We still believe those things but we suppress our voices. But in not doing so we allow ourselves (or what we actually are) to be more fully ‘represented’. We run the risk of being tagged a certain way but we also subvert the system by exposing that unreasonable opinion of the parent. We in fact make clear that one isn’t right just because one is a parent. The same holds in very many different kinds of relationships or situations. And so if we allow ourselves to more fully become what we are or what we’d like to be this is already a subversion without there being any specific ideological charge attached to it. Mahavir irrespective of the circumstances has to be beaten once by his daughter. The daughter has to be willing to beat him even at the risk of humiliating him. I won’t extend this note here but this is perhaps Dangal’s most genuine move. Allowing the central female characters in his film to become individualized, they’re not just great athletes. Compared to this the women in CDI are mostly stereotypes who in a case or two resist males (the cricketer) who are even bigger stereotypes! Here the only real character in that fleshed-out sense is the male. Dangal enables the viewer to empathize with the father but also the daughter. It isn’t one or the other but both. The reason the film can seem both patriarchal and not, as the writer points out, is because the writers allow both the male and female leads to be contradictory human beings with some depth. This is always crucial.

  2. Dangal Has Huge First Week – Three Circuit Records

Dangal (Hindi) grossed 192.50 crore nett in its first week as it added 19.75 crore nett on its seventh day. The film has grossed over 20 crore nett on six of its first seven days which has never happened before. The first week total is the second highest ever after Sultan which grossed 209 crore nett but that had holidays over the Eid period. Here the film has been unlucky as the big holiday fell on Sunday but the period between Christmas and New Year is good for collections, The film has set three first week circuit records as East Punjab, Mysore and Tamil Nadu / Kerala set all time records for week one. These have out performed because film is Haryana based and tax free in Haryana from Wednesday so East Punjab is extraordinary while Mysore and TNK is where Aamir Khan is most popular star ahead of Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. The daily first week business of Dangal (Hindi) is as follows.

    Friday – 29,14,00,000
    Saturday 34,00,00,000
    Sunday – 41,25,00,000
    Monday – 25,00,00,000
    Tuesday – 22,50,00,000
    Wednesday – 20,75,00,000
    Thursday – 19,75,00,000

    TOTAL – 1,92,49,00,000 apprx

The next two days are going to determine where the film is going. Going by the weekday trend and the fact that it is weekend for New Year the collections are going to be huge but how huge. No film has ever collected 100 crore nett in its second week but Dangal has a shot depending on what happens over the weekend. The Tamil and Telugu versions of the film grossed around 5 crore nett which is not bad considering how porly the film started in these markets.

  3. Top Ten Worldwide First Weeks – Dangal At 360 Plus

Dangal is the second highest grossing film Worldwide after one week behind Sultan. The film grossed $15.25m (103.25 cr) and 260.25 crore (192.50 crore nett) in India giving it a grand total of 362.10 crore. Sultan had grossed 398.70 crore over a similar period. It is the second film to cross 350 crore Worldwide after one week and the fifth film to surpass the 300 crore mark in one week. The Overseas numbers are extraordinary in US / Canada and Australia and may hit ALL Time Records in both markets. The Overseas numbers are the third highest ever (7 days) after Dhoom 3 and Sultan but they have come without Pakistan which could have done $1 million in a week though its hard to call as the film is patriotic Indian film so may have not performed as a Dhoom 3 or Sultan. Below are the top ten Worldwide opening first week collections.

    1. Sultan – 3,98,69,60,000
    2. Dangal (Hindi) – 3,63,50,00,000 apprx
    3. Dhoom 3 (Hindi) – 3,36,62,68,000
    4. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 3,33,39,00,000
    5. PK – 3,28,17,87,500
    6. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Hindi) – 2,86,58,67,000
    7. Kick – 2,50,41,54,000
    8. Chennai Express – 2,49,52,75,000
    9. Happy New Year (Hindi) – 2,45,50,80,000
    10. Dilwale – 2,18,93,88,000

It is only Khan starrers that get into the top ten with the highest non Khan film for the first week Worldwide is the Hrithik Roshan starrer Bang Bang with 200.33 crore.

On another note the first week business of Dangal is not far behind the combined business of Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani which released last Christmas. Both together notched up 380 crore apprx Worldwide in seven days.

Prem (to himself): Kya idiot hai. Body mere paas, wrestling tu karega?
Prem: Aree kya idea hai Amar, fantastic!

Then they walk into a room, in which they see Fatima Sheikh and Anushka Sharma.
    Amar : Betiyaan, Betiyaan, Betiyaan!!
    Prem: Beautiyaan, Beautiyaan, Beautiyaan!!

Amar looks at a waifish bone-thin Anushka, and decides to approach Fatima: Dekh, tu meri film mein beti banegi, lekin 6 months advance rigorous workouts aur wrestlng moves ka practice karna hoga, so u look like a national champ wrestler. And I will increase my weight by 20 kilos to authenticate my look. Then reduce by 25 and increase muscle mass by 10 to look like a National Champ for a 2 minute scene!

Prem approaches Anushka and tells her: Mere paas ek wrestling film ka idea hai. Tu meri beauty banegi. Ab main to bodybuilder hoon hi, to kuch karne ki zaroorat nahi. Sirf ek mooch ugani hogi aur chaddi paheni padegi. Lekin tujhe is size2 se aur bhi sickly size 0 hona hoga. Audience intelligence be damned.
Anushka: Ok boss! But will I pass off as a wrestler?
Prem: Kyun nahi? Peechey background music hoga. Tere ko sirf ek move hi seekhna padega.
    Anushka: Woh kya?
Prem: Since this whole movie idea is laundered, the name of this move has to be contextualized with laundrymen. Hence its called “Dhobi Pachaad”!! We will end every bout with the same move, even if I face a guy who is my size, or smaller or bigger. And we will have the same background music repeat about 100 times to drill it into the audience that all wrestling matches can be ended with only a Dhobi Pachad.

  8. To wedge in on the Dangal & Sultan conceived history. In cinematic sense Aamir rarely plays dirty. He is unduly harsh on some reviews and outspoken. The Darr example. The clashes with Gadar/Ghayal/Welcome he took on the chin, the dirty linen did not come out ala Eid 16 & Republic Day 17. He has also fought causes for the industry on public format, I cannot remember the film/issue but him & SRK plus others were out in unison for a film cause. The story of Dangal stealing anything from Sultan has little teeth. Add to this a man or star does not give 2 years on the line & health to one up another film where the star HAS the body and delivers the film in 6 months. It’s a very thick or dumb idea.

Some simple logic. It’s blatantly obvious YRF / Salman tried there best here, the introduction of a romantic angle is A typical of YRF’s and B a decoy act to differentiate from Dangal.

I don’t even have to get into Salman’s dirty linen within the industry; I’ll be here all day.

Outside of film’s both have their fair share of mistakes, but Aamir has never probably been to court on anything except maybe his divorce. Even here I’ll be here all day talking about Salman.

  9. I don’t think Aamir will really trust Salman anymore. It’s amazing that he is not upset with Yash Raj, and has been saying all the right things about Salman, but it seems impossible that the Sultan episode didn’t affect him. Salman makes a moronic statement that both films are different and if he had his way he would do both films and call dangal, sultan ka dangal. Look at his delusions.
If SRK has any sense, he must keep his distance from Salman.

Watched Dangal. A well made film that sticks to its solid screenplay but something where the major plot points and twists are all been there and seen that.

It scores well in the technical departments but Aamir has somewhat explored his working style which isnt weak but even there he sticks to a formula. There’s nothing extraordinarily innovative in this film. its no doubt a very good story idea but the way the screenplay is approached is exactly the way anyone with decent exposure to cinema and certain genres would pen it.

It starts out with the protagonist’s dream, shows hope, adds a challenge, the screennplay then pans out as the characters set out to achieve the dream, all goes well until there’s a misunderstanding between the protagonist and another major character, but all is well in the end.

Even the last second win is something that can be predicted much earlier, since the time the father tells the girls how every move wins them different set of points

But after watching the film, I was convinced that while it is a decent watch, there’s nothing that sets the film apart, nothing extraordinary and has characters that can best be described as one dimensional and entirely predictable. The most extraordinary scene in the film is semi final match between Geeta and the Nigerian wrestler.

The film and its theme can be compared to Chak De India and that in my opinion was a much superior film with a lot more innovative approach to character development and genuine tension for its time.

This is certainly not among Aamir’s top ten films but otherwise a decent watch which is better than 95% of the murk that is given to us every Friday.

    • I agree on predictability, but most sports movies are & being a biopic makes it tougher to really throw lots of unpredictability. Lagaan had creative license, Dangal had some, not all. I’d need to re-visit CDI to make that observation. At the time I liked the film a lot.

        • Predictability was not a problem for me. if the narrative is gripping, it seldom is a problem. Remember Mahabharat on TV. We all knew the story and yet we sat glued to our television sets week after week. People are still interested in how an event will unfold inspite of knowing the end.

I don’t think even aamir cared about people knowing the story, because all of that was in the trailer itself. The emotions behind the facts are what makes this movie click.

      • Also I would 100% agree CDI is more dynamic virtue of the fact that it’s based on a team sport of 11 players. Far more opportunities to explore. Just like Lagaan. Dangal is centred on 2 sportswomen – the opportunity of a dynamic film is far less.

    • I liked the film a lot more than you, but i agree that my attention too wavered a bit in the early second half. The tension reduces, and an audience catharsis of sorts is already reached because she wins Nationals inspite of all the odds.

Another reason why my interest dipped a bit was because I didn’t take to the older Geeta. I really missed Zaira Wasim, the young Geeta. What a terrific performance by her! She’s created a sensation going by social media reviews. I see a great future for her.

Dangal set an all time record becoming highest weekday grosser of all time and that too with no big holidays on the weekdays. It just edged past the weekday figure of PK but PK had a huge holiday for Christmas falling on day six whereas Dangal had normal days through the Mon – Thu period. If we take out the phenomenal first week business in a few circuits then the biggest achievements of Dangal over the first week are the Sunday business which was an ALL TIME RECORD collection for a single day and also this weekday performance.

The weekdays are actually better than the weekend performance as the weekdays have picked up a huge 85% of the weekend without a holiday and at with collections at high levels. The footfalls of the film on Monday were better than day one and Tuesday were similar to day one. Below are the all time top collections for the Mon – Thu period.

    1. Dangal – 88,00,00,000 apprx
    2. PK – 87,44,00,000 (One Holiday)
    3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 82,10,00,000 (One Holiday)
    4. Dhoom 3 – 75,87,00,000 (One Holiday)
    5. Kick – 75,18,00,000 (Two Holidays)
    6. Krrish 3 – 71,75,00,000 (Two Holidays)
    7. Chennai Express – 53,42,00,000 (One Holiday)
    8. Sultan – 48,79,00,000
    9. Happy New Year – 40,44,00,000
    10. Bajirao Mastani – 39,02,00,000

The Christmas releases last year grossed 71.11 crore nett between over the Mon – Thu period and this year Dangal alone has surpassed by around 23%

  21. This whole debate of Sultan Dangal is reading too much into it. At the end of the day, Salman worked on his EID strength and with some definite merits in the movie got it to 300 cr. It was in all honesty a below par movie compared to his own BB, which trended a lot better and had the emotions to win. But still it was a win for Salman

Dangal is a biopic, based on a true story. It still turns out to be a complete, gripping film with a strong performance from ensemble cast and that along with Emotions make it a superior product than Sultan. Even the Wrestling Choreography is top notch. Its a huge win for Aamir since its a Critical, Commercial hit.

If Salman has raised his superstardom, Aamir has that Goodwill and Brand value which makes him a Global boxoffice pull. I am amazed how the US/Canada is performing and will continue to do so for Aamir films.

  22. Dangal Is Historic On Day Eight
    Friday 30 December 2016 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network
Dangal had a historic eighth day as it smashed all box office records for day eight. The film has grossed 17 crore nett apprx as per early estimates on day eight and that is by far the highest ever collection for day eight. The previous best was was 14.50 crore nett of PK which was recorded two years back. It would have beaten by almost 20% if the collections come out to be 17 crore nett in the morning. Total collections of the film will be close to 210 crore nett after eight days which makes it the sixth highest nett grosser ever. the film is really taking the benefit of the holiday period and no competition and raking in huge numbers with the weekend only to improve further.

The tax free exemptions have now really kicked in and Haryana and UP are recording huge nett collections though the gross collections in UP are similar to PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (this film was also tax free in UP on day eight though not at all centres). Haryana is simply outstanding and because of this East Punjab continues to smash records by distances. The eighth day collections were crucial for a very big total and now it will be about that big growth which will consolidate day eight. Sometimes when a film is at very high levels on day eight the second Saturday growth is not like a film which did 7 or 8 crore nett on day eight. It remains to be seen where Dangal goes and if the big growth comes the final business could go anywhere

  24. Finally got the family together to watch Dangal and my god this is the film of the decade for me by far. Just amazed. Everything was just well done, and not a scene looked extra to me. The wrestling scenes seemed well researched and it just seems like an extremely well thought out film. Aamir, the child actors, adult actors, everyone was excellent. Only two minor things- I though the climax was a little OTT (**spoiler**) with Aamir getting trapped in the closet. Also I wished they showed more of Aamir’s body-building body! It was only there for 30 seconds- all that work!.

After watching this, not surprised at the box office results. I agree that the film may lack repeat value but definitely not entertainment value. But I would watch this again in a week in another group again. Maybe whats happening BO wise is that this is that once in a decade film where people who rarely watch films in theaters are coming out to watch it? Not sure. But PK, 400 crores are nothing, this film deserves much more. I’m not sure how I’d rate it in comparison to Lagaan. I might have too many biases for that film to even consider any other film even near it.

As for Aamir vs the rest…I’m a die hard SRK fanatic but there really is just no comparison. It destroys every film of SRK and Salman in this decade, except Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Regardless of what Aamir film has come out in the 2000’s, the one thing he has done right always are the emotions. That emotional connect is key, and Aamir nails it every time hence the astounding success. And I’m also loving Aamir+patrotic angle. I’m already excited for Thugs of Hindostan. Raees after Dangal is going to be like MNIK after 3 Idiots at best…

  25. Incredible stuff.

I honestly wonder how much Dangal would have truly collected had Sultan not existed and without demonetization factor. Not that it matters but still, something to ponder over.

To have 5 ATBB (sure Dangal will be one) in last 6 releases is quite an achievement. Bravo Aamir!

P.S – I haven’t been following BOI in a long time but I am a bit surprised by their commentary. They seem a bit.. dull, for a lack of better word.

    • I think demonetisation has made Dangal’s boxoffice a real talking point even in the mainstream media, and made its achievement truly stellar.

Many BO sites who were not willing to give the match to Dangal against Sultan, have now all come on board. The difference from Day 8 is too wide for any spin doctoring.

Sultan will be a distant, distant second. I said earlier too that for Salman’s unethical behaviour, his film deserves to be critically and commercially eclipsed, and that has happened. Of course, Aditya Chopra shouldn’t be getting a free pass here either. Don’t know what the dynamic here is.

But I would love for this one to break all BO records – not just because it’s a damn good film but because of the comments of folks like LIVEWIRE, etc. Instead of recognizing the fact that such an actor exists who DOESN’T meet the ‘demands’ of stardom – as per text-book regulations- and still goes on smashing monetary restrictions, is a feat in itself. I ABSOLUTELY ignore folks who make fun of biological and God-given negatives; Aamir’s ears, his height, etc, etc. I love it when a person fights it wtth WHAT he has been born with, not when what he has been GRANTED.

In a way, DANGAL is anything but the fact that one fights against God’s given or NOT-GIVEN abilities. Aamir has weird ears, is short, doesn’t have the ‘requisite’ star-qualities, etc.etc. But look at what he has given us since 2001, and you know how this man has utilized his SWOT; better than any actor I know. His should be a case-study in management schools, not SRK’s.

Someone like Amitabh is a Haley’s coment; it’s difficult to achieve and MAINTAIN that kind of talent and class; but he is an outlier extra-ordinaire.

But Aamir, again, kills himself every 2 years and knocks the ball out of the park…

    • the other thing that is constantly underrated with Aamir is his credibility. Clearly WOM pays off for an Aamir film at the moment in ways that it does not for any other star. I’d said this for Bajrangi but with Aamir it would have crossed PK. Even with excellent WOM somehow with Salman it could only go so far. On the other hand with Aamir this happens repeatedly. With 3I at least you could see it was a supremely entertaining film. But few people would call either PK or Dangal totally extraordinary films. But here we are! Or for that matter with Ghajini earlier which didn’t just break records at the time but also put up a trending pattern that NO Salman film has replicated. Not even the otherwise iconic Dabanng. Part of the story (pun intended) is of course the ‘story’! But then it is also the actor’s credibility. You take other big stars in the same sorts of films and they will not break records. WOM when correlated with Aamir is unmatched elsewhere. Is he a pure star the way Salman is or SRK was in that iconic sense of the word? No. And he’d be the first to admit it. But there’s no reason we need to have such a limiting definition of stardom either. Clearly we’ve been at a point for a number of years now where Aamir is the first to cross every such barrier. So that distinction while a qualitative one is also beside the point in this instance. Specially when the Aamir kind of track record is so rare. In other words what other star can one think of in Bollywood annals who wasn’t a pure star in the same iconic sense (i.e. either iconic in an obvious sense or tied to the iconic dominant genres of the age) but who nonetheless became such a massive star? There is no such example. Aamir hasn’t been tied to a key genre or something. And so any way you slice and dice it the results are pretty incredible. Now it’s true that this shows how poorly the others are doing. All those other films that are celebrated as ‘hits’ and so on. In other words clearly Aamir is not making HAHK each time or something! Or that kind of historic grosser. But the competition is still way behind. The gap is still huge.

Also I truly believe that WOM is near 3 Idiots level. Every year the negativity towards films increases, if 3 Idiots released in 2016, it wouldnt have been as appreciated as it was in 2009 just because social media gets more ruthless every year. Dangal is the first Aamir film since 3 Idiots where I see even all the die hard SRK and Salman fans praising it, and one where those really neutral audience members (Like my parents, who still can’t tell the difference between Deepika, Katrina, and Anushka) want to watch it again in theaters.

Dangal has emerged the biggest hit of the year after its second Saturday business. The film was always likely to cross the NETT figures of Sultan after its huge Friday but the Saturday business confirms the share of Sultan will be crossed unless there is some big downturn in week three. Dangal had a share of 104 crore apprx in the first week and by the end of week two it is looking to be close to 150 crore and Sultan was 158 crore and that 8 crore should easily be covered after week two. The second Saturday collections look to be in the 23 crore nett range which takes the second weekend to 41 crore nett.

Dangal has a nine day total of 233 crore nett plus and by the end of the weekend it will be in a similar range to Dhoom 3 (261 cr) which is the fourth highest grossing Hindi film of all time. The second Saturday is also a record easily beating the 19 crore nett second Saturday record of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and by quite a margin. The growth on Saturday will be around 25-30% which is huge at the levels the film is collecting. the second weekend is a certain all time record which is held by Bajrangi Bhaijaan at 55.5 crore nett. The film is tax free in three states at the moment and there are a couple more waiting. Delhi city and Maharashtra going tax free would boost the NETT collections further but it remains to be seen if they do get the exemption.

  44. Wish you all here a very Happy New Year !

These box-office figures are truly enviable for a subject matter this drab, dry and realistic. Aamir needs to be applauded even if the Christmas/ New Year repeat fever catches on with each of his releases. At one side you have the raw, brute, lethal star power of Salman which is not only instinctive, extempore and all things unstudied and at the other end of the spectrum is Aamir with all his method, conscientious, hard work, laborious, time consuming master crafter charting his own never seen before course on the box-office arena.

With Dangal, Aamir effectively de-clutches from Hirani to once again find his own unique proposition. It now leaves Hirani/ VVC with ‘burden of proof’ and a show cause notice. If one were to go by Ferrari ki Sawari, Broken Horses, Wazir and Saala Kadhoos kind of work , it does not look very promising. No wonder Hirani is sitting on Dutt project for close to 5 years now….writing and rewriting and now purposely lowering expectations by driving media narrative / PR planted stories of a rift between sanju and how its lead cast is a misfit….just to have that surprise element at the end when movie releases..

Coming back to Dangal I had to go in for a repeat viewing only to witness Dhaakad song with the younger version of the girls fighting it out with those skinny boys. Those few moments with song playing in the background with rustic, dusty atmosphere, dialogues and body language is a close encounters of hindi movie masala moment kind.

Contrary to others here I was pleased to see the real depiction of our coaches and this is where basterdization of Indian sport usually takes place. India is so good at producing world class players at junior level be it Tennis, Squash, Badminton, Hockey etc but they lose steam by the time they come to senior level and its all thanks to these self centered egoistical maniacs of a coach and the politicking attached to our sports…..so that is another great part of this movie which I could connect well.

  46. I’m going to make a complementary point to something I said the other day but one the reasons people have been spinning themselves into circles or even some otherwise well-meaning folks have had a similar problem is a certain misunderstanding. There’s a difference between being a pure star in the iconic sense and being a major one. In the former group are usually stars who get tied to certain genres and/or who beyond this sometimes represent a certain cultural moment. Salman is the former, he’s been bigger in this phase than SRK was at his peak in the sense of generating these massive initials/grossers one after the other and not only on one’s best day as was the case with SRK. On the other SRK represented a New Indian/diaspora cultural moment. here Salman has no equivalent. He symbolizes the resistance to that entire Yashraj system and ‘Bollywood’ cinema as it has evolved since the 90s. But this is different for standing in for something in some more affirmative sense. But in any case both at their respective peaks are iconic stars in that pure sense.

Aamir doesn’t belong to that breed. However this does not mean that he cannot be as big a star otherwise. yes it’s an improbable route. Most stars don’t become so big avoiding strength genres and sticking to quality or prestige films or building up credibility with the audience that way. We can have a debate on how he did this or how this model was made possible. Nonetheless given that he did it he is a star as big as those two. If it is true that Aamir cannot appear in nothing films like Salman and expect to get the same results the opposite is also equally true. Salman cannot appear even in a film like Bajrangi (let alone anything less) with excellent WOM and surpass the biggest totals (Aamir’s) out there. SRK’s record is similarly very poor in different films of any sort.

If any other star appeared in Dangal, exactly this film, depending on who the star was it would do a whole lot less or dramatically less. It would be a success in all of those instances but not at this scale. Why? Because as I pointed out in that other comment when Aamir does a film you get the greatest bang for the buck for good or better WOM. In other words if the same WOM holds for a number of stars across genres only in Aamir’s case is the greatest number of people persuaded to show up. This too is about stardom. If one doesn’t accept this one will forever be stumped as to why other big stars even in very big films don’t get such results.

Finally, and to repeat an oft-repeated point, it’s also point to keep imagining that if say a star like Salman does so much in a nothing film how much more would he do in a good one? because Salman is precisely loved in the nothing film! No one wants to see him in anything very sensible for the most part. Bajrangi is the exception not the rule. If Salman started doing Aamir’s films he wouldn’t be a third as successful! Because he has no credibility for those parts. This is true for stars the world over. And of course it’s a question of quality. But only a few iconic stars are ever in the position to be both iconic and do quality films. Sometimes it’s a historical accident but more often than not it’s about the star being taken as seriously as an actor. Very few top notch iconic stars are fortunate enough to be able to do both. The Bachchan thing is again the exception not the rule. Or there was Dilip Kumar for an older generation. Rajesh Khanna was lucky enough to have great scripts when he became a great star. Not because anyone otherwise thought he was a fine actor (though he was once considered great for his parts). Using another example Stallone is great doing Rambo or Rocky not pretending to be DeNiro! So again there are many definitions of stardom. Aamir is second to no one at the moment though because of the genres he does he might not often get the absolute biggest day one. All else being equal you can’t beat blockbuster type films with other subjects. Despite this he often comes very close and certainly with WOM he tends to set up records in those other genres too. That’s what’s truly impressive about a PK or specially a Dangal where he’s playing an older guy for the most part. Doing it in D3 isn’t extraordinary but with these films it is.

Ultimately whatever one’s definition of stardom you have to get the biggest results one way or the other. The rest can all be up for debate but not these bare facts. Aamir is unchallenged on this front since Ghajini. Completely unchallenged. Now one can make up fairy tales about why others aren’t doing it but those are the facts. Combined with his iconic films (here he really does have more iconic films that other stars in this post-Lagan period, it’s not even close) and the critical acclaim on most days there’s simply nothing to argue about.

Whatever happened to proposed biopics on Guru Dutt and Kishore Kumar?

One Raj Kapoor film quite different from most of his filmography would be Teesri Kasam; directed by Babu Bhattacharya, co- starring Waheeda Rahman, with great music and total rustic voice and mood. One of my all time favourite films.

I wonder if Jagte Raho too was different from Raj Kapoor’s regular work.

Nitish should get full credit for his direction of Dangal. In an interview, Aamir spoke about it — that it was unfair to his directors, him getting any credit. He spoke about Dangal scenes involving only the girls being directed and shot in his absence.

But I think Aamir makes his presence felt during final edit.

        • Jagte raho was indeed a different kind of film. In the sense that Raj Kapoor was the main character, and the only one throughout. The rest came in did their part for maximum 10 minutes and left.
Its all about a man from the village in the city. He feels thirsty and in his quest for water goes into a society area with a block of flats. There the watchman sees him, shouts, and a scared Raj Kapoor runs for shelter into one flat after another and the story goes on with what is going on in the particular flat he takes sheleter in.

I’d brush 3 Idiots aside now as a Hirani social comedy is far more appealing on paper. Doing this AFTER Sultan, a film that hurts Dangal massively, is a moral victory for Aamir Khan and his dedication.

P.K now should be beaten and there is a shot at 400 CR. Though it still needs business of approx. 130cr from now on.

Dangal (Hindi) grossed a phenomenal 70 crore nett plus in its second weekend as it up a huge second Sunday of 30 crore nett pn its second Sunday. This is the first time that 30 crore nett has been crossed after the first Sunday of any film. The second weekend is easily a record as it beat the 55.50 crore nett of Bajrangi Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Dangal is also now the third highest grossing film ever at 262.50 crore nett plus with only Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK ahead of it. The film is looking on course to hit 300 crore nett by the end of the second week though the holiday period has ended now. That could slow collections a little but on the other hand tax free status in some places will compensate a little. The daily business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

    First Week – 1,92,46,00,000

    Friday – 18,00,00,000
    Saturday – 22,00,00,000
    Sunday – 30,25,00,000
    Second Weekend (2 Days) – 70,25,00,000

    GRAND TOTAL – 2,62,71,00,000 apprx

The film is scoring best in East Punjab, Mysore and TNK and will hit all time records in the next few days. East Punjab is because of the Haryana base of the film and tax free status in the that state while Mysore and TNK because Aamir Khan fimls always tend to out perform in those areas. Dangal is a heartland Hindi film so should not be doing best in Mysore and TNK but thats where Aamir Khan comes in

Dangal is closing on in on the 500 crore mark Worldwide with its business reaching 495 crore after ten days. the film has grossed 353.50 crore in India (262.71 crore nett) and around 140 crore in Overseas. The film still has plenty of legs so should comfortably cross 600 crore Worldwide though the PK total looks difficult unless there is a Far East release down the line and it manages to get numbers there. The film has performed better in India than Overseas as its the best time of the year in Overseas markets and the film is not going to add much to last years Dilwale which despite its numbers in Overseas was not really appreciated but down to the period. There is the Pakistan factor where Dangal has not been released but even if we add $2 million for that it will just edge Dilwale by around 5%. That too if it sustains well after the holiday period. That is not to say its not done well Overseas but it could have been better. Australia and US / Canada will be records but other markets are less. Below are the top ten all time Worldwide grossers.

    1. PK – 741 crore
    2. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 604 crore
    3. Sultan – 583 crore
    4. Dhoom – 539 crore

Attacking SRK (for example) at every given opportunity is pointless. The same applies to any other star. Similarly (made this point to Aamirsaurabh as well) putting up too many one-line comments without consolidation also clogs up the forum. Your comments are welcome otherwise but let’s have some discipline.

1.Out of 4 released aamir movies,3 are not only BB or more but infact all r not only ATBB’s but also HGOTY and ATHG as well.u r undermining those 3 ATBB’s.
2.Talaash was not average but Semi hit, mind that.
3.Why don’t other stars also hike tickets.hiked tickets mean lesser footfalls if audience doesn’t feel satisfied.highest FF record for this decade also belonged to AAMIR till BB happened last year.but dangal is going to thrash that footfall record this decade of BB.
4.Sallu didn’t had 10 but 11 releases during the decade.u forgot veer in early 2010.so,by ur logic sallu also had 3 times more releases (2.75 infact 11/4) than aamir to give those 3 times BB(2.66 infact 8/3).
5.Sallu only had 1 ATBB during the decade(BB) compared to 3 by Aamir.so,aamir has 3 times more ATBB’s than sallu.(what abt that indicine).
6.By your silly logic,ATHG and ATBB by aamir r equivalent to those small Blockbusters like Ready and Bodyguard, which did 60% and 70% respectively of 3idiots after 2 years of 3idiots release. Also, kick which did 213 cr compared to 337 cr of PK in 2014.
7.Min. gurantee but aamir movies r most profitable my dear indicine, how.

Stop living in a fool’s paradise and accept the reality and logic.

      Q. Is Aamir Khan the new No.1 because his films not only open well but become the highest grossers of the year as well as till date then? Why is Salman still the No.1 when Aamir’s box office supremacy is ahead of Salman’s?

      A. It’s not just the collections that decides which star is the biggest. Higher ticket prices will obviously result in higher collections. What we look at is the footfalls (number of ticket sold) and also the ability of a star to bring audience to theatres all across the country. Single-screens may not contribute much to the collections of the film – 1 lakh people watching Sultan at a single-screen in Bihar, might just contribute 20 lakhs to the net collections of the film, whereas at a Gurgaon multiplex the same collections could be achieved with just 10,000 people watching the film. This is just an example, the gap isn’t that huge between Aamir and Salman. On sheer crowd pulling ability, it’s Salman who is the number one box office draw. Period.

When a Salman film releases, distributors are assured of a minimum guarantee in return. That’s not to say all of his films have worked. Jai Ho was loss-making and even Kick didn’t recover investment for quite a few distributors because it was sold for very high prices.
      Q. Does this decade so far belong to Salman or Amir? Don’t say both. Pick only one.

      A. Aamir has done just 4 films this decade, three blockbusters or better. One average grosser. Salman Khan has done 10 films, out of those 8 were blockbusters. Salman has nearly 3 times the number of blockbusters, so the decade, so far, belongs to him.

Dangal has just obliterated weekdays records along with unbelievable second weekend business and all I see BOI harp on are two things – enhanced ticket prices and ‘lets see where it goes post holiday season’.

Where are articles analyzing collections of Aamir’s movies? What he has done with Dangal is no small feat. The only point where they mentioned his crowd pull is when they were reporting collections in TN and Mysore.

Very disheartened with BOI’s style of reporting.. anycase, this is exceptional business and I still feel Dangal lost wrestling novelty factor because Sallu pulled a quick one on Aamir.. and still lost.

And the funniest thing with boi commentary on Dangal is, despite decimating every imaginable record with in 10 days of its run, their lack of “Adjectives” while defining its unprecedented success!! Imagine if Dangal were to feature their all-time favorite Shahrukh, adjectives would have fallen short to define the magnitude of its record breaking run by in its very 1st week itself!! But they must be busy finding alibies for not giving full credit of Dangal’s success to Aamir!! I’ m really relishing the moment where even the biggest Aamir haters are bound to “admit” Dangal’s spectacular box office performance is solely an ace up in Aamir’s sleeve.

      • During Dhoom 3, BOI and some of the other sites quite unusually spoke abut how a film’s true worth is second and third week business and not the opening. Now, that Dangal has broken second week and will easily outperform every other film by a big margin to emerge the biggest ATBB, some of these sites again talk about opening strength and how Salman is the winner here. The dishonesty is stunning.

Dhoom 3 was such a disastrous film, and Aamir broke all opening records. He did it with Ghajini we well. Proves that he can get the big openings when he wants to. And of course he always gets the best trending.

        Liked by 1 person

        • Your last paragraph is key. He ‘can’. A star has no obligation to keep breaking opening records with each film. This is not a formula of success. Ghajini and D3 prove Aamir placed in the right format is a match for any star, heck even Fanaa did it. But put those other stars in Dangal in a post Sultan world they wouldn’t find the credibility from audience to convince them to turn up. Aamir in this phase is pretty much upsetting the apple kart and it will take a special film rather than a special star to replicate this.

For me 3 Idiots was the real game changer for Aamir. The kind of hold it did then despite a record opening broke many a theories about trending vs opening etc.
Never cared for Ghajini which was too expensive a movie to be even called a Blockbuster despite its record break.
However that pulled Aamir above SRK then as BO numbers were superior to RNBDJ.

      • How likely is it the film will touch 400? It could have easily achieved it with a couple of holidays. Now, the challenge seems a bit uphill but can certainly be done. 345 cr by Thursday, and 40 cr in the 3rd weekend takes it to 385 cr. Another 15 cr is not impossible.

        Like

        • It’s not critical to get 400cr. I think that figure here is still unlikely. That’s it’s in the game is more than enough. I see 350 with relative ease, today needs to be north of 13cr. It needs 130cr still that is a lot. Has to be 320cr by end of week 2. Then even 3rd week will need to be close to 50cr+. It will need to do it mostly all before republic day releases. Tax reliefs will help.

Key factor also is weekend growth, it’s clear the families can give this figure a chance. The 3rd Friday will need to also clock close to double digits assuming Monday to Thursday do.

        • It’s also the genre and kind of film it’s breaking records with. It reminds me off RDB, that the template for a historical type gross is being toyed with. You don’t need a big production house, a director with pedigree, glamorous sets, expensive locations, A list actress, chartbusters or enforcement of romance to generate a commercial blockbuster. You just need a good film people can identify and resonate with. The holiday theory has been deconstructing. Sultan did not hurt the film. So many factors against the film success make this a remarkable achievement.

this is so nice of MK – in fact Akele Hum Akele Tum was such a nice film and in today’s time would have been a BB – but then Mansur Khan has been pretty unlucky as he deserved lot more BO success

    • AHAT had an emotional, power-packed performance from Aamir. But Manisha Koirala wasn’t able to perform upto the mark, and I have to say, she was quite overrated as an actress in her time.
After Dangal esp, I feel, a good performance can elevate a script to a considerable degree. Manisha was also lacklustre in another Aamir starrer – Mann. Here too, Aamir was excellent in his role. But Manisha’s character fell flat, and it didn\t help that Indra Kumar decided to deglamourize her for the film.

    • AHAT was a poor adaptation of Kramer Vs Kramer and is best known for its superhit songs.
The film was not at all close to the original in acting (by Aamir as well as Manisha) and direction (Mansoor Khan). Unfair to single out Manisha to make Aamir look like a Hero. Have been against this type of politics going on in this forum. One doesn’t need to do this for Aamir Khan.

But that is my personal choice & it has a very emotional connect with me the way Aamir bonded with his son & his depiction of fragility of his character unable to cope with the fact that Manisha was a better singer & she could be the bread-winner for the family was a big blow on his egotistic thinking. Also the fact that she can aid him in getting work was another ‘unacceptable yet harsh truth’ which he could never come to terms with! And for me everything worked from Aamir to Manisha to child actor to neighbour Tanvi Azmi to his friend played by Deven Khote to music composers part to Neeraj Vora as a shopkeeper and Paresh Rawal as a lawyer & his scheming in-laws perfectly played by Anjjan Srivastav and Rohini Hattangadi. And the songs are icing on the cake with dil kehta hai being my personal favourite. There are many superior performances of Aamir’s but Aamir as Rohit in AHAT has some very intangible connect with me which is impossible to put in words.

btw someone raised a very interesting point here. Aamir in a quality film earns better than any other star in a film which might be equally good. So the public’s perception of that film is better than it usually is.

Aamir in Ghajini is a bona fide masala moment. Salman in Bajrangi Bhaijaan is perceived as a star vehicle with relatively fine attention to the story that is otherwise no great shake.

Dhoom 3 with a bad story was meant to falter after a very good start. but kept adding more and more to its gross and ended up being the biggest grosser there ever was.

      Week 3 onwards…
If the film drops 65% week on week it will end around 385cr.
If it drops 60% WoW, it will end at 400cr.
If it drops 55% WoW, it will end at 420cr.
A drop 50% per week, it will end 440cr.

400cr scenario still means it doubled it’s 1st week and no film at this level has done that except 3 Idiots or Ghajini.

I am a bit worried about Thugs of Hindostan. Since 2001, Aamir has done 2 movies with YRF. Fanaa and Dhoom 3 and these are his two weakest moves in terms of story and plot. Ofcourse both were major money spinners and TOH might as well become one but Aamir needs to make sure that YRF does not dilute it again.

    • There’s a difference between Fanaa and D3 though. the former opened very well and trended very well too. I myself have always liked the movie. Yes compared to other films Aamir has done since Lagaan it might be more regular but it’s a very solid film otherwise and in my view better than most of the other Yashraj/Johar stuff. In many ways it’s a kind of 60s/70s films. Also the ending was unusual by yashraj standards in those days. In any case it trended very well. D3 on the other hand did historically for about 10 days or so then came down relatively fast. So the two films are not comparable in this sense. Now I think D3 too is treated unfairly by some. If anything it’s the most substantial of the Dhoom films. Now I might be willing to accept that the greater masala admixture sits uneasily in a series which at least before this was mostly about ‘cool’. Also just because it’s Aamir one shouldn’t forget that he could have only done so much with the franchise. Actually think the film needed parity between the hero and the villain to be truly worthwhile but with Abhishek’s box office fortunes this deal was perhaps sealed in this sense. But as it stands I still think it vastly better than most films of this sort. Where I do think you have a point is that Thugs.. might well end up being more like D3 and less like Fanaa in terms of opening and trending. The one important difference though is that Thugs is based on a novel and so there’s a proper script ready for this one. or at least the material to make a proper script from.

      • Fanaa way better than D3 IMO. Music, the internal trauma displayed in second half, the poems in the first half, the scene where Aamir reveals himself to Kajol. The army scenes were terrible, so was the comedy of Rishi Kapoor dying. But there was tension, anxiety & indecision in Aamir’s performance as well as Kajol. Something quite whimsical about the film. D3 I blame on the director & producer and Aamir for not making his action sequences a bit more cerebral. The script was easily the best Dhoom script. On reflection I doubt I could watch D3 again, Fanaa I could.

I can’t believe he’s doing a film with the Dhoom 3 director. What do these guys see in him? I’m sure Aamir got feedback about D3, and knows it was critically panned, and was a forgettable venture.

        • yes there’s an extent to which Dangal has ‘shocked’ many people. After the Sultan thing and given that this already didn’t look like the most commercial film imaginable it was reasonable to expect less. Of course some folks were nonetheless trying to game things. S yes it was a commercial film but it wasn’t 3I! Having said that it’s certainly been something remarkable to the extent that Aamir seems to have rewritten various rules with this sort of film and subject. To say that it’s an emotional film or whatever doesn’t go far enough. There are no stars other than him, he’s an older guy in most of the film, the girls take center stage at some point, there isn’t a big soundtrack, no Hirani-like director. And the sport is first of all not cricket or something but also one that was already explored recently in Sultan. You add up all of this and it’s really one of his unique box office results. It would be one thing if the film did 250 or something. that would still be huge for this sort of subject. But to now become the all-time leader and by quite a margin (wherever it ends up eventually) is pretty stunning. I certainly expected it to challenge PK after watching it the first time but there’s something about the overall response here that transcends just the numbers. PK was huge but that film didn’t quite get this sort of response. 3I did in a different way. But to get that kind of ‘connection’ with an audience in a film that doesn’t have any obvious commercial elements and to make the film such a box office champ.. it’s simply not imaginable that any other star today could have done this. Again this is where those old debates about Salman being bigger let alone SRK or whoever just seem ridiculous. Now I don’t deny Salman’s incredible initial and everything he’s done in this period. That itself is pretty remarkable and in many ways singular (i.e. a guy having his very best phase this late in his career and that too after being more or less out of the game for years) and yes he has the volume and mass cinema gets a certain kind of attention. But all of this still does not amount to a star greater than Aamir (though Salman is a ‘purer’ one in the iconic sense, that is hardly the end of the debate) when a guy has been doing it in every conceivable genre for years and really getting the absolute grossers for years too. In fact its even become a bit absurd at this point. Any time Aamir shows up in a major film one autmatically expects the very biggest grosser. The pressure is not even fair but somehow he keeps managing to top his past numbers and again across the genres. But even examining this history very closely Dangal is quite unique.

livewire, you are of course entitled to your views, but I think Aamir deserves more credit here than for any other film, because had he not masterminded it, one can only imagine its fate. It’s a fair question to consider that Tiwari came with poor credentials, and the whole team was new. Aamir took on most of the weight here, literally, and hence deserves all the credit he is getting.

        • there are a 100 scripts that look great on paper but are poor films for the reasons you’ve suggested. I remember an Aamir interview from the 90s where he talked about some of his failures after QSQT and he said that he realized with that experience that the director was always important and that many good scripts could be destroyed by bad directors and vice versa. Now I don’t completely agree with this. Because if there are strong enough scripts even functional directors can be ok. This was often true in the 70s for example. However Aamir is nonetheless right in the sense that we don’t live in that kind of age anymore. A good idea is not necessarily a good script. But beyond this it is just hard to find really good scripts these days because we don’t really live in the age of great writing (things have improved since the 90s but not dramatically.. most of the upgrades are just in terms of the ‘look’ and so on).

On a separate note I know it is merry making time for this blog / aamir fans. But with all this sweetness and sugary commenting this blog is in serious risk of getting diabetes. I suggest leave the box office alone and
“cut to the chase” and start discussing few demerits and weaker plot points at two important instances in the movie.

I mean so many of you felt in Sultan, the central conflict point and Anushka angst again Salman’s character was not properly laid out and discarded it as simplistic writing.

Now how about giving VTs on simplistic approach / easy writing in Aamir’s character –

          1. One day the girls beat up a boy and Phogat decides these girls will be wrestlers?

          2. Geeta wins a fight against her skinny cousin and boom Aamir’s character decides they are ready to compete in akhaada against boys in village championships…

          3. after all the tensions in father-daughter relations – one call. Father and daughter are back together.

And finally how about Mahavir acting like a total jerk and forcing himself down his daughter’s throat and make them live “his” life?

These are central problems not even a single aamir fan has discussed here. Sultan had numerous high and lows in a very complex plot and that is why initially I had warned everyone here Dangal will just be buried under box office talk but Sultan as a intricate masala movie will age well. Just 2 months after the release the wide acceptance on TV / High rating gave us a glimpse how well this movie is going to age.

TZH has a Katrina combo and I hope there is sufficient oomph / sexiness and characterization is not bland like the previous installment. Ali Zafar showed a very playful side of Kat in Meri Brother Ki Dulhan. With Ali Zafar who comes from Dewaar mode of filmmaking there is going to be few basal masala moments in high octane action mode.

Songs, locations , situations will all add up and if the movie is coherent enough (like say a Wanted was) …..expect bonafide blockbuster !

Truth is lack of quality product / movie drought since last 5-6 months is helping this movie in a big way. Here the demonetization is working is reverse and all “students of psychology” will concur with me that beyond a point one just stops caring and wishes to break free and release tensions of daily life and Dangal is offering that outlet in letting loose…..It’s similar to a Diet-Binge Cycle when suddenly you say to hell with all these restrictions in diet and start to pile on food. The timing of Dangal is once again tuning out to be key to such a huge success here! Obviously the movie needs to do the talking first to take advantage of the rest of scenarios.

        • I know it’s not funny that is why I have already accepted the box office miracle of Dangal and it is unparalleled so we should all move on…..

However in recent history there is no correlation of this sort of box office figures with such genre / wide level acceptance hence passing any further judgments and comparisons on box-office figures from now on becomes pure academic. This kind of acceptance also calls for realignments of credit to people other than just the star and esp people like Nitesh Tiwari who conceptualized such a wholesome ‘Indianised’ movie in the first place. Stars are always the last to enter the scene though Aamir comes with an image of deeper involvement…. so be it.

Having said that and looking at various comments here the “esteemed members of this blog must also realize in this ever changing Bollywood dynamics, simple raw data assembled from box-office for a widely accepted movie cannot be the only criteria to anoint a numero uno star of bollywood. The expansion of cinema beyond theatrical release is now a known fact and it now stretches to TV, cable, satellite, live performances, leverage and clout at award shows, ads, image, makeover etc etc…. So in real terms it all boils down to being the poster boy of superstardom – where simply the name precedes the product and sells like hot cake in the market. ….where sheer announcements get financiers line up at the door steps with top dollars,

I am writing this comment after giving it a deep thought and is no way shifting of goalposts but it takes into account wide-ranging avenues and the current market dynamics.

        • let’s cut to the chase.. if God directed a film with Salman in it you’d say Salman did God a favor, otherwise God doesn’t have this kind of box office record.

Meanwhile if Aamir did every single thing in a film (act, write, direct, music, camera, editing.. etc) you’d say ‘see he plans too much, anyone can get a big hit this way’.

Let’s not pretend it’s anything more than this. By the way I heard distributors are very upset with Dangal and Aamir. They’re saying ‘who cares about 350 or whatever when it’s so planned? We prefer making less money on Salman’s films.. we’re for the higher moral principle that one must make money off spontaneous stars in junk films even if it’s less money’.

Incidentally God is with Aamir evidently which is why he keeps coming up with these “miracles” regularly. But don’t worry. At least the ghosts who drive are on Salman’s side.

  75. Salman Khan had a pretty good year in 2016 with the success of Sultan in which he played a wrestler. As the actor is planning to do more action films in the future, Salman Khan is also planning to take up roles that are relevant to his age.

As Salman Khan’s contemporary Aamir Khan played an onscreen father to four girls in his recent film Dangal, Salman Khan was recently asked whether he is planning to take up dad roles in the future. Salman Khan recently said that he had played a father in Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai when he was in his 30s. He has been there and done that. He revealed that he will be playing a father to a 13-year-old girl in his next film.

Talking about the plot of his next film, Salman Khan revealed that the film is about dancing just like the Step Up franchise in Hollywood. He will be training properly in dancing to look like a professional dancer. He revealed that the training for dancing is quite painful. For him, Sultan was also painful in which he had to lose 18 kilos of muscle. As he is not into diets and loves eating home cooked meals, losing 18 kilos of muscle was the most difficult task for him.

Salman Khan further added that he has always believed that effortless hard work should be seen on-screen. And that’s what he has been doing from Wanted to Sultan. He gave an example about Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone who is still Rocky and Rambo at the age of 71. As he does not see himself in character roles anytime soon is future, he makes sure that he lives his dreams. He said that filmmaking is the most beautiful industry where the makers sell dreams. So, why shouldn’t he live his dream?

It seems like Salman Khan’s next film is going to be quite a fun-filled ride as the audience will get to see him in a different avatar. Though the film’s name or the director has not been revealed, it sure seems like an exciting film.

Not so for Salman who has ended with egg on his face.

But the ganging up did affect SRK since he was on a professional (Ra.One…) and personal ( fights with Shirish, Farah) low

Aamir on the other hand has surged so far ahead and his prestige is at such an all time high that the SRK-Sallu pairing makes no dent at all. The two would realise the need to pull up their socks and get more focused instead of wasting time in this buddy-buddy business.

Kiran Rao seems to be anxious that she hasn’t been giving enough time to her writing. I can understand how she feels. But she’s been busy with other things like organising MAMI etc.

Honestly, I would have sympathised with her more if Dhobi Ghat had been a better film. Even if she had made an Aligarh or a Lunch Box, I might have felt that Aamir perhaps should take it slow for a year and let her have a go. But unfortunately, she made a pedantic, slow, and affected film. Her concept may have been good on paper, but the execution was quite poor, the writing not terribly impressive and worst of all, she didn’t get the casting right.

Of course, I’d still say she is talented, but one has got to make the best of the chance you get. Kiran would have to be satisfied playing the star-wife untill her son grows up, unless she can prove herself as a filmmaker. Incidentally, this was her parent’s grouse when she married Aamir. They rightly feared that her career would be completely overshadowed. But judging from her first film, I can’t say any great injustice has been done to her.

When you get one chance, you have to go for it.

Joint No 1 : Aamir Khan & Salman Khan

Aamir Khan needed a colossal Blockbuster to bridge the gap that Salman was creating between himself and others. With Dangal, now the gap no longer exists. However now the gap exists between both these stars and others.

    No 3: SRK
He is in a bit of a bother here as the gap between him and other two Khans is Huge now. Moreover the gap between him and No 4 is not so Huge.

    No 4: Akshay
He is in a zone now and 2017 is looking very promising

    No 5: Hrithik
He is lost his Halo but still has potential to go higher. Kaabil will be key.

Priyadarshan told IANS that he is relieved that the Mohanlal starrer Oppam has been a roaring success.

“At the moment, I am working on two Hindi films and a Malayalam project. One Hindi film is for Venus Films, for which I have done a few films in the past. The script is being worked out and the cast would be decided shortly. It could well be Abhishek Bachchan. This would be the first one to go on the floors,” said Priyadarshan.

The second Hindi film is a remake of Oppam and Ajay Devgn will play the title role which was essayed by Mohanlal in the original.

“The central theme of the Hindi film is the same as that of Oppam, but I have made certain ‘cultural’ changes to suit the Bollywood tastes, and it would be visible more in the first half. We are planning to start the filming in September and would be ready for release by the end of this year or early next year,” said Priyadarshan.

It was earlier reported that Akshay Kumar will star in a film co-produced by Salman Khan and Karan Johar. This is a unique coupling (tripling?) as the three of them have never worked on a project together. They are also arguably the biggest names in the industry at the moment.
It was announced that the film will be ready to release in 2018, and will be directed by Anurag Singh.
However, Quint reports that this could cause major disconcert for Ajay Devgn and Randeep Hooda as they have been working on the pre-production of a film based on the historic Battle of Saragarhi.
The report claims that Akshay Kumar has been signed on to play Havaldar Ishar Singh, a military leader of 21 Sikh soldiers who led his army to a deathly war against Afghani invaders.
The war was then titled Battle of Saragarhi.
Ajay Devgn has announced the film last year itself, with the hashtag #sonsofsardaar indicating it would be a sequel of sorts to his 2012 film, Son of Sardar.

India news January 4, 2017 Dhoni steps down as limited-overs captain

MS Dhoni has stepped down as captain of India’s limited-overs teams ahead of the ODIs and T20Is against England in January. Dhoni will still be available for selection as a wicketkeeper-batsman for the series, though, the BCCI said on Wednesday evening.

The selectors are meeting to pick the squads on January 6 in Mumbai.

“On the behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats,” BCCI chief executive Rahul Johri said. “Under his leadership, Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket.”

Dhoni had given up the Test captaincy in December 2014, when he retired from the format after the Melbourne Test. However, he stayed on as ODI and T20 international captain after having taken on those roles in 2007.

My guess is it’s easily a 100 crores today. Piku did 80. Pink did 70 or perhaps a bit less. DZ is around 65. To quote a few examples of films that played to similar markets. Of course DCH is easily one of the most influential films in this period as well. But as a larger matter there has always been this utter stupidity of BOI when it comes to smaller multiplex films. They’re completely crude about this. If a producer does not budget a film the right way that’s his problem but otherwise many smaller films, even with stars, are meant for certain markets. They can only gross upto a point even in the best case scenario. This is why in Hollywood such films are released a certain way. Of course BOI, like the trade, also does not penalize much bigger films for underperforming quite badly at times. Because as long as some magic 100 or 200 or whatever figure is reached they think all’s well. Hence they’re kinder on Ra One than DCH! Go figure!

    • BOI is run by some hardcore baniya ch***ya with no artistic strand in his being, for whom it’s all about felicitating the biggest grossers only. These guys are shell-shocked with Dangal #s, but still stubbornly refuse to admit, learn or understand changing audience tastes and intelligence. DCH is the trendsetter of the urban multiplex movie, the spark that lit the fire which provided the confidence for further experimentation. It further morphed into monespinners such as JTYJN, TWM, and might I add even a 3I. Remember distinctly thinking that 3I may end up around 70-80crs, just because I thought it was too urban and non-massy. The 200crs it did was entirely reflective of changed audience tastes.
Its the fault of producers who overbudget and derail niche films. BOI really needs a primer-course on the effect of niche movies in setting trends and goading audiences to change tastes.

Joining the list is superstar Akshay Kumar, who took to his Facebook page, to express grief and disgust over the episode.

Akshay said, “I was getting out of the airport after a short vacation with family, and there was news flashing on the Bangalore Molestation case. The incident makes me feel we are evolving backwards, from humans to animals, rather beasts because even animals are better!”

Principally one can agree with the comment above but I am still trying to grasp all these excessive box office figures for a movie this unhurried / low key….to be frank this isn’t a Sholay or Deewar out here……

It’s all hypothetical but ‘using his brains at the moment’ is hard to deny. Aamir did not do college and admittedly failed to clear his 12th grade boards, but his brains have adequately mapped up a decent working plan in terms of ‘consumer economics’. By coming every 2 year he has optimized the demand and supply curve at the moment….

Restrict supply side which automatically raises demand / hunger for his movie – guarantee 200 cr opening on the basis of sharp demand curve.

Next step scare his consumers / fans that next movie not coming before 2 years so better gorge on whatever is available 2/3 times more (somewhat like compulsive hording) – get another 130-150cr to the totals.

Boom ! you have 350 cr in the kitty !

How can u explain people here thinking of watching Dangal a 3rd time……..its definitely not just the movie but likelihood of not getting to watch another aamir movie in near future which may be driving the numbers up the wall.

    • The question is this: how many more times will Aamir have to put up these totals before you start accepting some basic facts?

The problem in life always is that if you start with a faulty premise you have to eventually tie yourself up in knots to justify it. You’ve come up with more silly theories here. I’m not even going to respond to the specifics because at some point it’s even sillier on my part to do so. I have a simple suggestion though. If you just accept Aamir is the biggest star right now or at the very least the biggest along with Salman life might be much easier! But since you’re devoted to Salman in frankly abnormal ways it’s impossible for you to do this.

But nothing of this sort happened, so why this easy formula to success didn’t yield desired fruit to Bhai?? Waiting for some very “deep Gyan” from livewire on this aspect! Aside, Aamir broke 3 opening weeks records within 9 months as with MP, RDB and Fanaa broke his own records that too in such a short time span!! Ghajini and 3 idiots were also record breakers despite releasing in a gap of 1 year!! Talaash didn’t break a single record despite it releasing after a gap of almost 3 years since 3 Idiots?? There is no single formula or theory to all this as it has combination of factors when a movie takes a grand opening & then content makes it sustain no matter who the star in taking it to 250+ Crore club as simple as this may seem 😉

        • Content is King.

I’m going to end my side of the debate, but still follow the BO story. Aamir is a superstar not as per conventional terms. From what little I know of bygone eras, he seems more modelled on Raj Kapoor, then a magnetic on screen presence. He can switch on the superstar ala Ghajini, D3 or 3I. The latter two he is aided by brands obviously. But those brands won’t succeed with any Joe blogs, there is a reason he is chosen and not Saif Ali Khan for example. You still need a popular star that adds weight, credibility to the project.

Aamir is more maverick and cerebral. There is a clear mandate to offer the audience the best possible film. He’ll dedicate everything for this. This comes at a cost. His fans DO get annoyed at delays AND lack of films but he delivers a polished and sometimes special film. If there were more like him and Hirani etc. you would get better content at a lower cost AND better overall collections. You only need 3 Aamir like films in a year to cover HALF of the industries collections. You need 12 Akshay Kumar films to do the same.

Less films, more time spent on each film…More space in calendar = better quality and probably better profits.

It’s not meant to offend Akshay fans, but just a general perception.

  95. Its an interesting debate that is going on here. I can very well see that these discussions can get campy. Livewire is Salman fan and he paints all the discussions in that light and somehow other members are more Aamir fan. Been following lot of this blog and prior Naachgaana. What i feel is Boxoffice discussions need to be done counting all the aspects of what goes into that Movie.

Here, i feel from an economic consistency point of view, i would pick Salman Khan as the main draw since he can deliver big hits without paying much heed to the content. However he too realizes when you have to focus on content you will get films like BB and when not, you will get PRDP within that Span. His model is being true to his larger then life image and work on your strength.

The problem with the above is, the fans then take and discredit and malign the facts to suit there agenda. I cannot discredit Aamir’s acheivement, its monumental. May be if he is also doing lot of movies in a year, It might affect the quality. But the fact is Aamir’s is a brand. Its almost bordering unfortunate that Audience WANTS and DEMANDS quality from Aamir and that plays to Brand Aamir strength and him associating with a script, gives it a halo like feel. If it succeeds, its GOLD. Thats what has been happening since 2008.

If it for me i will give the title to Salman using the WWE analogy since i have him as the main draw in formats like RAW, Survivor Series and many other events. But i will keep Aamir as the draw for Wrestle Mania as that will be the biggest draw.

Coming onto BOI’s analysis on DCH Syndrome. Thats utter Stupidity. Simple answer to that is Release planning. Why can’t the producers just focus there content centered to the audience segment they are targetting. BOI seems to have lost the track of time that that taste, preferences continue to evolve. I mean come on, 2014 Elections were won on the technology and social media prowess. Secondly the attention span is reducing constantl along with the competing avenues of entertainment.

The day India has average Internet Bandwidth speed matching upto the likes of US. The Cities will focus on consuming content when they want iand wherever they want. Multiplexes will have hard time to find content. The core problems lies in the content and films like PINK have succeeded.

Anyways this has become a rant. I will shutup for now.

    • I’ll take this analogy any day. I stopped watching Raw years back, may loop in to see what’s happening online but only watch if something exciting happened much like Salman recently. Will always follow WM, it’s the Superbowl equivalent. The showpiece event where the key storytelling is either closed out or developed. It’s where WWE makes its key revenue, it’s got vast historical significance. It’s the final essentially and the event where Mohammed Ali, Pamela Anderson, Floyd Meatherway, Mike Tyson, Donald Trump etc turn up or centres upon.

Everyone ratchets up their performances. If you were to list the greatest wrestling matches ever most will be iconically linked to WM. The significance of other shows is diminished. And trust me this analogy only weakened the argument for Salman, don’t get me talking WWE, I know everything!!!

How much truth is in this?

    Like

    • I feel it’s very likely. It’s too unnatural to have a body transformation like this without some substance.

      Like

    • There are two separate things here.

      1. In order to lose weight, you won’t need riods. As per Aamir’s video he lost the excess weight in a little over 5 months. That is a pretty reasonable rate for the amount of weight he lost. Especially, he was not overweight to begin with before he reached the 90+ kg mark. So it is easier for him to drop the first few excess pounds right off the bat. I think, during the first phase (in Arizona as per an interview) he was doing cardio for 5-6 hours of different activities with reduced calorie intake. He later maintained a steady run rate of 2-3 lbs per week. This is a pretty healthy rate and will also not cause to develop stretch marks or sagging skin. I can drop 3-4 pounds per week with less exercise than what he was doing. So, no big deal here.

      2. Building muscle. This is a very sketchy area. One can build muscle without riods but juicing will take your body and muscle definition to a new level. In addition to giving strength, doping reduces the recovery time and muscles heal faster. Non steroid users normally supplement with natural or synthetic protein & creatine etc while doing the weight training but I think that is not the reason for debate here.

These days lot of people, younger adults and older folk as well have been doping to an extent(micro) to gain better muscle definition. Unfortunate this is becoming more common for the wrong reasons. Aamir might have used just enough to be on the safer levels for Dangal.

I am pretty sure Hollywood and Bollywood (Since last 15-20 years) have been using steroids to build their bodies. To make it sound like Aamir invented this thing is again disingenuous.

All these great bodies you see from the indian stars are not natural. Be it, Hrithik, Salman, Aamir (Ghajini), John Abraham, Shahrukh (Happy New Year), Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer, Varun Dhawan have taken steroids. There are no if or buts about it. Some of them did it for a specific movie/period and others like Hrithik consistently take them. IMO Hrithik is juicing to the gills. There is no way anyone can achieve that kind of muscle detail without help. It is easy to recognize, who dopes and who doesn’t. The more definition or littler muscles you see in someone, the more they are doping.
