One more thing is now certain, raees is not going to be niche or any less commercial than sultan. And if that’s the case I expect raees to trump sultan in the plexes.

  20. ‘Sultan’ and ‘Raees’ box-office clash averted?

Apparently, Salman Khan is in talks with ‘Sultan’ makers to release the film on Diwali 2016 and avert a clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’

Much has been made of Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan coming face-to-face at the box office on Eid 2016, but our sources tell us that the clash has finally been averted. The two superstars apparently had a little chat over a common release date for their upcoming films with Salman deciding to give up on the Eid slot for his friend-turned-foe-turned-friend SRK.

A source says, “Shah Rukh and Salman have become good friends again and they believe that there’s no competition between them. They respect each other’s work and have worked out a solution to avoid a clash. Shah Rukh has retained Eid 2016 for ‘Raees’ while Salman will convince the makers of ‘Sultan’ to shift the release to Diwali 2016.” A source working on ‘Sultan’ confirms the development, saying: “The both have a massive fan following and do not want the audience to be divided. So, Salman has now decided to come on Diwali.”

A Yash Raj spokesperson denies the buzz, saying: “‘Sultan’ will release on Eid 2016. The shooting begins in November 2015 and wraps up in March 2016. There are no plans to shift the release date.”

  21. AHMEDABAD: A local court on Thursday issued notices to Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, his wife Gauri Khan, actor Farhan Akhtar, director Rahul Dholakia and producer Ritesh Sidhwani along with three film making companies in response to a Rs 101-crore defamation suit filed against the film `Raees’ by Mushtaq Sheikh, the son of erstwhile underworld don Abdul Latif.
Sheikh sought a stay on the release of the film which stars Shah Rukh Khan, and on the airing of its promos, trailers, and publication of news articles on the ground that the film projects his father, who had `high reputation’ in society, in a negative manner. The petitioner claimed the film could bring a bad name to his family because the writer, director, actor and producer of the film did not keep the word given to him when they promised to project Abdul Latif in proper perspective.

Who is right? We can’t know. But the timing of Kaabil announcement just after new Raees ‘teaser’ launch and right before official trailer is perplexing!

The fact as an outsider is
          Kaabil was announced first
Raees picked same date – personally I think this is fine, it’s fair game. The Roshans crying about this is nonsense.
Kaabil moved one-day earlier, Raees too shifted which in my opinion is wrong and deliberately making a point and will leave a sour taste in not only Roshans mouths but also industry will take note.

Facts are facts – unless confirmed otherwise from trustworthy sources.

I am inclined to believe Roshans are dirty too as they proved with K3 collections.

        • You don’t have to trust. But releasing on 25th makes full sense if you are not eyeing the 1st day records as 1st day folks will anyways come. Frankly, Raees has never ‘officially’ announced the dates on any of its posters after the Eid postponement. Then Kaabil did announce the theatrical trailer for Jan 26th.

Raees did announce teaser on Nov 30(still no release date announcement) and trailer on Dec 7. Then out of nowhere Kaabil announces its new date with ‘extended previews’ on 25th in this 1 week Raees gap of teaser & trailer. That sort of co-incidence is too hard to ignore.

Anyways, best idea is that both movies will release FULL on Jan 25th and take head on. No point in half releases. I’m sure this will be the case eventually. Both will release on 25th completely!

          Like

        • Seriously Raees didn’t need to do that….This is such a massy movie and was a perfect Eid release. Now I am sure they made a mistake by moving out of Eid.
If I was Excel, I will release Raees on Jan 5th or Jan 12th….Take 2 whole open weeks for yourself….and if your product is good you will not lose out Republic Day completely…
It is senseless that for 1 holiday people are ready to clash but not release it earlier when they can have 2-3 open weeks for themselves without a clash

          Like

        • Agree. I think any solo release date is any day better than clashing for 1 holiday. Sultan clash would have never happened as SRK/Salman just became friends again and he wouldn’t ruin that part. Best option was ‘Sep 9’ the week during the 2nd Eid. But anyways.. Raees is gonna be remembered for the movie which could have done easily 200 crores on festival release and will struggle with reach 150 crores(even with +ve WOM) now.

          Like

        • With a positive WOM and with a clash and with a sub par opening, Bajirao Mastani which is a niche movie did 180 crs. With a negative WOM and with release issues, Dilwale did 145 crs with a clash…By that yardstick if the movie is good Raees will confortably do more than 200 crs…comfortably…as it is more massier than BM, will open much better than BM too…
The key as usual in any SRK movie of late is – is his movie a good movie? Everything else, clash. budget, release date are all immaterial…When his movies become good, the records and big totals will also come…

The chilling dialogue said with a masterful poise sets the tone for the ingenious theatrical trailer of Raees that was shown to select journalists in Mumbai a short while ago. Director Rahul Dholakia and superstar Shah Rukh Khan were present and informally chatted with journalists who unanimously gave an overwhelming thumbs up to the much awaited trailer.

Shah Rukh Khan is in stellar form. He is cool and calm and composed.

  29. Sure but audience seems to be maturing a bit and if this kind of divergence is not woven properly with the theme movie is angling to tackle, then once again result will turn out khichdi sque……

Dilwale had this issue and constant flip flops between guns and roses were jarring and audience could never settle down and understand / invest in either of the characters. Very rare to see ruthless cruelties suddenly turn to compassion unless it aligns with the tone.

I doubt srk is trying a Dabangg type masala here but tackling something more stern and grim…

Whatever may be its form , audience feels cheated with half hearted messages…..universal acceptance together with huge box office success of Dangal is pointing towards that.

    Like

    • I agree with livewire here. Paying public can’t be cheated with such stuff anymore in the name of so called masala. It’s 2016 and not 70’s era when there were enough takers for such ventures.Hope the film proves us wrong and turns out to be a good one.Looking at past two flicks of Dholakia one can be hopeful about better product, plus Excel involvement adds more credibility. Overall give and take situation so far.

    • A ‘maturing’ audience loves the Salman films.. yeah right… mature audiences watch Kick.. or how about real mind-bending titles like Tiger Zinda hai..

of course you’re negative about everything Salman is not connected with (maybe if Raees works you can say it was because of Salman..) but on Dilwale Shetty admitted he’d made a mistake catering to that older SRK audience. To extend this CE was fine because it had a script with a romantic element. Dilwale though tried to keep a romantic track that wasn’t necessarily part of the same film. Obviously with Raees and since SRK is no Aamir in terms of being able to improve things with the story it will all depend on the script and/or director.

One is free to like or hate any star. Unlike many others in the past including chiefly the SRK fans I don’t make it some kind of higher moral failing if one hates SRK or any other star. But one must also live in reality. Secondly one shouldn’t be the kind of person who’s prejudiced to such an extent that every opinion automatically becomes worthless. You like everything Salman acts in, you even like his cereal choices, you probably even blame people for sleeping on the sidewalk and framing Salman (not that he was driving!), or the blackbucks who came in front of his gun.. or whatever.. on the flip side any and everything anyone else does is suspect for you. In sum this is a ‘condition’. But no one can fix it for you!

  30. I have no idea what SRK is aiming with Raees because he has forfeited the trust factor at the moment. I don’t know if it is the story which attracted him or yearning to do big bucks with masala / anti hero / gangster….. then there is β€˜arty’ Dholakia at the helm so God only knows what the real truth is but 25th is not very far away. Personally I am open to revisit his cinema albeit after reading reviews of people whose taste I trust.

Coming to your comment there is a contradiction here to the longer comment you posted in the other thread. However first let me admit by saying Salman hasn’t been able to make deep inroads at the box-office after astounding initials. Box-office figures of Sultan are case in point where till yesterday the movie had led Dangal not only at the Indian box office but Overseas too. What happens from here on is where Aamir with his ‘undiluted’ message and ‘single point agenda’ is going to hit deeper / much harder. Looking at the box office result of 2016, it should be pretty much clear β€˜a bit from here and bit from there’ is not going to work anymore. Audience is even ready for a full blown Houseful 3 if it remains true to the genre of nonsense…so Dangal is exactly at the point where the tide is turning going into 2017 and core undiluted cinema will be the norm if one were aiming for high benchmarks at the box office. ( a fresh new love story is always an exception to this rule of changing tide)

Secondly your comment about Salman is meaningless since in your longer comment you have tied Salman to some sort of cultural moment in certain genres which is a breakaway from bollywood of 90s and gives audience some cheer and celebrations. So the openings were guaranteed to an extent but then there is a limit beyond which audience is not going to give the star any rope. We have witnessed SRK/yrf/kjo having reached an expiry date to their 90s cinema and any kind of reinvention to that kind of bubble in Befikre/ADHM/HNY is not going to find many takers. Similarly Salman in Dabangg type masala mode has a ceiling. A clever actor senses that and is ready with plan B and maybe it’s his sense of scripting or pure luck that Bajrangi and Sultan came very timely and he would be extending his streak a bit longer than everyone anticipated here. (That is why I always say aamir is more a clever artist than anything else because he keeps a good tab on the tide tables and is market savvy to high and low tide timings).

    • It’s not so complicated. If he did better films, i.e. within his zone, something just a bit more sensible he’d get higher final numbers too. Since he’s just doing junk it’s about the initial. When it’s slightly better he gets better numbers, otherwise they’re lower. Either way they’re not the biggest ones. But yes Bajrangi is the only interesting ‘case study’ in this sense. Without doubt it would have crossed PK with Aamir. Salman wasn’t able to do this and he’s never going to get a better chance (i.e. on trending, not just the initial getting bigger and bigger in absolute terms).

      Like

  31. I wish to add my comment is also a bit prejudiced and may be Master or someone else may have noticed and can shed some light here but a fortnight back , krk made a very weird but significant tweet and then he deleted that few hours later.

The tweet mentioned – as per his sources the movie is nothing like the trailers/ promos and srk is playing a very dangerous game here by sending wrong signals to win the opening battle.

Like I said 25th Jan is not far away and let’s wait for the exact verdict on all this.

    Like

    • well yes clearly misrepresentation doesn’t help. On the other hand he might be trying to jack up the initial as much as possible and then hoping for a decent enough follow-through. Again not a strategy I agree with (if that indeed is the case). if you attract less people with a trailer that better represents the film you also cause less disappointment. With a larger cross-section you’re also likely to get more negative WOM even for a film that might otherwise be good or good enough, just not what people expect. Having said that SRK is also living with another burden. He’s nowhere close to Salman and Aamir, any number of films prove this. But in the right film (and I’d add a number of qualifications here) he can in the right circumstances still get a big day 1. That’s something important for him, not unnaturally. But again the gap now between him and those other two is so great that just this stuff besides getting him good press for a day or two doesn’t mean anything. Far more important to have a proper success with minimal trending and then use that to build something with future films. But then I could have said this to SRK a decade ago at the very least.

    Top 3 overseas 2nd weekend :
    1 #BajrangiBhaijaan – $4.80 Million
    2 #Dangal – 4.35 Million
    3 #Dhoom 3 – $4.03 Million

Of Course this no comparison and Dangal is going to take off from here and leave Sultan far behind but that’s the point I was making earlier.

    Like

    • yes but the problem with these very ‘selective’ comparisons is that they don’t mean anything. No one is doubting Salman’s massive initial and of course Bajrangi trended better than most of Salman’s other films. But you could compare the Avatar opening with many films and say it wasn’t as strong. So what? Titanic opened well but nothing extraordinary, specially relative to the scale of the production. But what was stunning here was that it kept adding at least 20m every weekend for weeks and weeks. That record no film has beaten since. Of course the absolute gross was crossed eventually with 3D and IMAX screens and what not. Even then the Avatar trending and gross (though not like the Titanic trending) has not been easy to match or cross. In fact it’s only Star Wars that crossed it by a margin (surely not any film!) and even Titanic has been more or less equally (though not crossed), and that too in absolute terms, by the recent Jurassic Park or the Avengers. Again not the most usual films. And it has taken them 15 years or more just to equal Titanic in absolute terms with all the 3D/IMAX ticket advantages, not to mention much higher ticket rates in general. Those are the really special achievements. The rest are so only in a very relative, qualified sense. What a film does one weekend or one day of the week or whatever isn’t the most important thing. Otherwise Happy New Year would also be a top grosser and Salman would have crossed PK three times by now!

        • agree.. there are many such points to be made. it’s also tiring to make them every time because no matter how rationally you argue the other side (whatever it might be) keeps saying the same stuff as if nothing happened. For instance in 2006 some of us used to have debates about Aamir versus the rest given the super year he had with Fanaa/RDB. at that time other arguments of denial were used including insisting on the biggest grosser. But note what happened. When he got the biggest grosser it was either considered a fluke or something other big stars could also do. When he got another one it was about Hirani or a very entertaining film. When he got a third one there was some other excuse. I could go on. At some point you’d think that people would stop saying this stuff but actually with minor tweaking they keep practicing the same sort of denials. No matter how many times SRK falls short of these benchmarks and no matter by how big a margin people keep predicting rather huge totals for him. Meanwhile the guy who actually beats his own record every time is treated far more ‘cautiously’ — oh let’s wait and see, it’s not easy this time, it’s demonetization, it’s this, it’s that. But hey Raees is good for 250. If there is any benefit of the doubt shouldn’t it be given to the person who keeps proving it in terms of the numbers rather than someone who doesn’t? But the opposite is usually true. It’s basically partisanship. Nothing more. And there’s no point in pretending otherwise. One can fight about it or be polite. But the partisanship becomes apparent one way or the other. of course Aamir fans shouldn’t laugh too much. Some of them have started making similar kinds of exaggerated claims or at least they’ve got into the same game where the beginning and end of every discussion is the box office. The film is hardly talked about. What’s the point of having this more meaningful Aamir model if one is only going to talk about these films the way one does about ETT?!

  34. Wow a two full page advt in Times of India today. I think SRK might be doing his biggest mistake here.
No song promos, unknown and uninspiring Pakistani actress and above all clash with Kaabil- things have changed for SRK a lot than what one could ever imagine.
I hope he pulls this off else this might be a point of no return kind of situation for him.

the biggest opening days do not matter as much as trendings do in the long run, and the fans must realise that. Its like comparing Amar Akbar Anthony with Ram Balram and suggesting the superiority of the latter by saying “it had a bigger opening day than the former”.

in any case, Sultan will be gone soon. And Aamir is easily a bigger star than Salman. anyone who doubts this has my sympathy. Aamir was in top form with delivering hits even during Salman’s rough patch (2000-2009) and even at Salman’s peak (which is now), Aamir’s films continue to outgross.

he delivered a mega hit even with Dhoom 3 (a very ordinary film IMO)
