Dangal set a new all time record for the second week with collections of 111.50 crore nett. It beat the previous record holder PK by a healthy 15 crore nett and PK also had a major holiday for New Years Day on the last day of its second week. Even in terms of Gross they are the highest ever. The trend of second week records is that they are all Aamir Khan starrers. Ghajini set a second week record in 2008 which was beaten by 3 Idiots in 2009 which was then beaten by Dhoom 3 in 2013 and that was beaten by PK in 2014 and now Dangal in 2016. Prior to Ghajini the record was held by Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008). There is now one film which has crossed 100 crore nett in the second week and six films that have crossed 50 crore nett. Sultan released early this year just failed to hit the 50 crore nett mark. Below are the top second week collections of all time.

    1. Dangal (2016) – 1,11,50,00,000
    2. PK (2014) – 96,37,00,000
    3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) – 86,28,00,000
    4. Dhoom 3 (2013) – 64,51,00,000
    5. 3 Idiots (2009) – 56,15,00,000
    6. Bajirao Mastani (2015) – 55,19,00,000
    7. Sultan (2016) – 48,89,00,000
    8. Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015) – 46,21,00,000
    9. Kick (2014) – 46,15,00,000
    10. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2103) – 44,45,00,000

  6. Love the CD cover of Roja included in the article –

The former jingle genius, Rahman caught Mani Ratnam’s fancy when the latter heard a few ad jingles at an awards function where the former was adjudged the best jingle composer. Their maiden collaboration Roja is considered an all-time great not only in India but also globally with Richard Corliss hailing it as one of the 10 best soundtracks of all time in Time magazine.

    http://www.dailyo.in/arts/ar-rahman-bollywood-roja-slumdog-millionaire-oscar-grammy-hindi-film-music/story/1/8285.html

Rahman’s backing vocals on the first song that revealed him to the world, “Chhoti Si Asha” or his intro growl on “Mukkabla” on Kadhalan or Humse Hai Muqabala in Hindi or even him singing the Tamil original of “Humma Humma” in Bombay (1995) takes the songs to a different level but him singing “Tere Bina” in Guru is a different thing.

In the past few years, AR Rahman’s music hasn’t enjoyed the all-round success which was almost a given when it came to him till the mid-2006. Perhaps this might have to do with the infamous Oscar curse where, upon winning the statuette career trajectories plummet as soon as winners finish their acceptance speech. But, if there’s anyone who could break that myth it’s Rahman.

Here’s wishing that this birthday marks the return of vintage ARR.

AR Rahman turns 49 on January 6.

[This is an excellent and necessary piece Baradwaj. One that in a sense some of us have been waiting for. Your framing of Aamir’s post-Lagaan career not only provides the right contexts but I also like (and agree with) the implied subversion — inasmuch as Aamir’s experiment seems singular in contemporary ‘Bollywood’ it is ironically so because even as he appeals to multiplex audiences he does so by resuscitating an older sense of ‘rootedness’. Your piece is where authentic debates about Aamir’s career, or certainly this phase, should begin.]

      • This is very good piece from Rangan for followers of cinema and legit extension to the one liner jayshah had posted on Aamir sometime back. I feel Dangal will now be some sort of template going forward for filmmakers if they wish to reach a wide audience.

Most of the new age directors give audience some kind of extrinsic value who descended from another world. We have seen just on this blog there is amalgamation of all sorts of eminence in various fields but people like An Jo, Qalandar, Rocky, Z and many more as entrenched to the Indian turf as the 70’s – 80s audience. The only graduation has been there are simply no more takers for ‘kuttey kaminay main tera khoon pee jaaonga’ and ‘bhagwan ke liye mujhey chord do’ kind of cinema.

Aamir for reasons known to him ( may be due to extensive travel and taking time off ) has understood this part of psyche better than the rest. Salman fortunately gets rooted due to his very reasonable thinking dad and family.( TV has helped him connect too ).

Rest of them seem on a pill…..!

        • In the same context just look at the recently Rangoon trailer and even a well grounded figure like Vishal Bhardwaj is not able get the settings tone equitable to the period ( strictly going by trailer and movie may still be worth). The whole premise is coming out fake and cast not living the character but posing….story becomes secondary if one is not invested in that world….

And god knows how he could give in to allow Kangana mouth a very much 2017 dialogue – ” bathroom jaa rahee hoon susu karegaa mere saath….”

I mean Kangana seems to be in ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ age and era and this shows her poor homework as that is not the setting of that movie. ( my opinion )

I’ve been trying to credit Aamir for it because it cannot be just coincidence that right from Lagaan, Sarfarosh and so many other films, they all are complete scripts. Though he has been the focus of all such films, he made sure he has interesting roles played by good actors. It is not something that’s witnessed often, but it should be. Most of our stars are pretty insecure. They make sure that apart from them, the others actors are mediocre but Aamir is an exception.” http://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/naseeruddin-shah-aamir-khan-dangal-4463886/

  15. https://www.bollyarena.net/dangal-vs-pk-vs-dhoom-3-vs-bajrangi-bhaijaan-box-office-collection-comparison/
This day-wise breakdown from this link is amazing, dhoodh aur paani saaf saaf nazar aata hai:

So at the end of 2 weeks, PK was at 278.53cr, BB was 272.28 Cr and Sultan was 271.03 Cr. The gap between PK and the other 2 was hardly that much (<6cr and <8cr respectively).

If the BO power and hold of Sallu was indeed for real, then by the end of their runs, this gap between PK and BB/Sultan should either have shrunk or at least maintained the same. However, this tiny gap of less than 7-8cr substantially yaaaaawnnnneed to wide differences of 20cr for BB and 40crs for Sultan!!

Phir kahaan chala gaya Sallu ka starpower? Sirf opening de ke phus ho jaana bhi koi stardom hota hai??

Even more revealing is the comparison between Sultan and D3. So using the same analysis as above, Sultan with much better WOM and releasing 3 yrs after D3 should have widened the gap vis-a-vis D3 from the end of 2 weeks to the end of its run. However, remarkably, this gap remained stable at 14crs!

Nothing more needs to be said.

Master –> I think if content is great, anything is possible…Aamir has certainly proved that..Now we can apply the same yardstick to Raees and we must agree that 200 is the bare minimum for that project considering the clash…150 crs etc is too less a bar and clash is not a reason enough anymore considering how Dangal has done over weekends…and made light of lack of holidays and demonetization

  21. Dangal’s trending is fantastic. I don’t think that it will go beyond 355cr. I feel it will most probably settle around the 350cr mark. But that’s a tremendous achievement by Aamir Khan once again. I, personally had faith in him and Dangal, even when earlier on some had doubts on Dangal being commercial enough or novel enough (post Sultan).

I was not bowled over by Dangal actually. It is good cinema, not great, not in the league of Lagaan at all. But still, much, much better than Sultan and most of what Bollywood churns out for us week in week out.

It was always quite clear that once Aamir comes up with a top grosser once again, he would be the undisputed no.1. He now has the top 2 grossers. He is in a league of his own (with only Salman coming anywhere close). Expect to see Raees and Kaabil struggle to get past 100cr in the next few weeks and you’ll get a better understanding of the gap between Aamir and the rest.

  23. 2017 Wishlist: Getting Our Cinema Out Of Dumbing-Down Pit And Making Films That Connect -Vivek Agnihotri –

    http://swarajyamag.com/magazine/2017-wishlist-getting-our-cinema-out-of-dumbing-down-pit-and-making-films-that-connect

Another big challenge that needs to be addressed immediately is the advent of the stupid. The real, emerging consumers of cinema are the youth of this country. Today’s youth has grown up on modern television. Modern TV has slowly, steadily and systematically uneducated the cinema public. It has changed the comprehension of cinematic imagery. It has deconstructed the language and grammar of cinema and converted a big part of cinema’s audience into a “commercial break” audience. TV is a medium of fleeting images and information and low-impact content. So, a whole generation, which has grown up on TV entertainment where one doesn’t have to concentrate, where one doesn’t have to comprehend, interpret and imagine, is not ready to appreciate cinematic language.

That’s why good cinema has to struggle to find an audience. TV has contributed quite effectively to this “dumbing down” process with regressive, unreal and Stone Age stories. The single-minded focus on grabbing the audience’s attention has given birth to stupid characters, stupid cinematography, stupid plots and stupid ideas. To make it worse, the queen of TV, Ekta Kapoor introduced Madrasi cuts (repeated cuts of the same expression with blaring music) and monstrous camerawork, topped with rehashes of Bollywood songs, leaving no scope for the audience to think or imagine.
The “audience wants it” argument is inane, irrelevant and mediocre. I don’t believe that the audience needs to be titillated and sensationalised. I don’t believe that a film is for weekend consumption only. I think intelligence and quality need to be pushed back into the audience’s expectations. What should be a standard has become an exception. I believe that cinema is modern literature. I think it’s a medium through which my children are going to connect with history and the world. For cinema shapes our worldview. Cinema touches our hearts, our lives and fills us with hope.

  24. Finally Saw Dangal. A very good movie. Every viewer has a different perspective. However this forum almost gave similar perspective on the movie. Here is my take with a different view.

This is one of those movies where most of the things worked –
    – Story (one of the best and gives an edge over Sultan),
    – Acting (by the girls | Just like Pink, here too the girls rank over and above the male stars thereby making the story believable)
    – Music was overall average except for the brilliant title track which makes one feel the hardships of wrestling
    – Screenplay was very good except the climax. Using National Anthem in commercial movies? I understand it was meant for Aamir Khan know that his daughter has won…but again was it that important?
    – Brilliant first half.

However i was disappointed by –

    – Characterisation of the mother played by Sakshi Tanwar. She was not needed in the movie unless of course her role was chopped off later. What i saw was a role which was even lesser than the cousin’s role. Realistically i don’t think Mothers play such a minuscule role in shaping daughter’s role.

    – Wrong portrayal of national coach. This is also indirectly accepted by Aamir in his interview post release. He did confirm that liberty was taken in portrayal of a coach. But when you are claiming to make such a great realistic movie throughout, it gets negative for me.

    – Second half was good but not as brilliant as first half. It was too melodramatic. I think Aamir khan would have worked very hard to make himself relevant in second half and would have changed the script at the planning phase. It was needed for the movie. More Aamir khan is always a joy. However it ended up making second half less interesting than say a Chak De India.

At the end, I am overwhelmed by the movie which is year’s best beating Airlift for me. Except for the more effective use of Indian flag in Airlift, Dangal has better emotions and thrills.

Sultan was coming to my mind when Aamir fought with his wrestler colleague in his office. However the moment focus got shifted to girls, it was a different experience. The movie would have suffered it the story had been on Aamir as wrestler. I still think Salman’s performance in Sultan was better and would rank Akshay’s in Airlift to be better as well.

But an Aamir Khan film is not about him. His greatness (unlike other stars) lies in ensuring the character actors are memorable too. He did miss out on not working on Sakshi and Coach’s role and hence this lowers below Lagaan for me but the best movie of the year by a distance.

    Rating : 4/5

      • Thanks Munna. So clearly Mahavir’s methods were not liked by the girls which in the movie is shown otherwise. Also his methods were not appropriate as well.

This article also shows that the relationship between coach and Mahavir is not as bad as what’s shown in the movie.

The story mentioned in this article sounds close to real and should have been used in the movie. This would have given a more humane touch to Mahavir and had not made the national coach look like a sadak chaap gunda as shown in the movie.

      • Within this list I’d argue that CDI, Dhoni, BMB are the only pure sports movies though perhaps one must also distinguish biopics of sports figures from sports movies as such. Lagaan is a much larger subject than cricket while Dangal is in my view a story of family relationships masquerading as a sports film. Or put differently Dangal is of course ‘about’ sports in an obvious sense and it of course references actual figures and their achievements but the real ‘heart’ of the film is elsewhere. Sultan similarly is a masala film where the hero happens to be in this profession. And this is why I asterisked the biopics. For instance a biopic about a politician is not necessarily the same thing as a political film. It could be both but it often isn’t. A biopic is usually about the development of a person into a legend. That journey involves all sorts of personal factors and can also include cultural or social themes. Such a film highlights the sports (in this case) history but the very same format could be used for a political biopic or any other sort of similar film. Biopics can be formulaic. Now CDI also has the whole SRK Muslim angle but I find it superficially employed here. The film is otherwise a fairly straightforward sports film. All of this is by the way why I don’t generally like sports films (including Hollywood ones). Because if they’re not being deeper and just about the literal game they can still never quite match the drama of the actual thing. They might still of course be entertaining (CDI certainly is) at some basic level. .

It’s a jog now and doubt it will get there. With the 3rd week in 50CR range it needs to threaten 3Idiots 4th and 5th week records and still add well from there. Only see a miracle now getting it there.

It’s also a very unorthodox movie to do it in. Which is even more remarkable. With no Sultan or demonization, guaranteed this would be well past 400CR.

It has 16 days before it’s taken off pretty much everywhere in India. OK Jaanu will take away a bunch of screens and Jan 25 will take away almost all of them. Let’s take the 345 number (hindi + regional). It needs 55 CR in 16 days (3.5 per day). 4 CR avg this week gets it to 360. 16 – 18 CR weekend ( not sure how much screen it will loose) gets it to around 375 by next Sunday. 25 to go in 9 days. That’s a really tall order.

  29. Hi Friends. I generally follow this blog during a major release. (esp. Aamir’s).

Jay – For sure you know me. I am coolguy from NG days. I am in your FB too. Hope you remember.

Just wanted to share my thoughts on what has happened.

Salman back stabbed Aamir by going for Sultan. That is pretty clear. Now somehow I think it’s YRF and even SRK to do with this decision. Salman has ego issues and I don’t see it taking too much to convince him to be undisputed no.1 he has to beat Aamir in his own game (beating PK wasn’t easy – Salman’s best movie till date BB couldn’t do it, so they thought beating Dangal will be an easier option). So Sultan kicking Dangal’s ass was the plan YRF and Salman went with. Aamir made his case even more difficult by making comments that I would say were immature and not well thought enough on how to project himself (which is very unlike him). But he is human after all. Even I was convinced Dangal going anything beyond 150-200 will be amazing.
Secondly I am assuming, YRF and SRK felt that since these 2 guys are good friends its better to try divide and rule, since they are just running away with BO. Today all know Salman and Aamir are far bigger BO brands than YRF and SRK. And YRF and SRK would be far from happy with this. So it was a good plan.
Now with how Dangal has performed, despite all issues which have been repeated for nteenth times in this blog (so won’t list them), how you guys think would have dented YRF, Sallu and SRK’s psyche. Though Sallu seems like a biggest loser here, but I disagree. Sallu got what he generally gets since last few years. A blockbuster film that ran by using his raw star power. And he never had biggest grosser since god knows when. He is where he was, apart from being humbled by Aamir. But the other 2 must be absolutely livid. On the face of it it looks like Sallu lost, but I don’t think so. Real losers are someone else.

And Aamir played it pretty well. He realized the whole ting very soon and let things happen. The only way he could beat them was by making a far better movie and hope for the best. And boy he has come up trumps!!! May not be his best film or performance, but this is his biggest victory till date IMO.

    • This is all conjecture. Why would Aamir be doing YRF movie?

There is some back stabbing (not by YRF but Salman being friends with Aamir. If Aamir is making wrestling movie, he doesn’t hold rights to all wrestling movies) but I think it is limited to choosing sports. And it is more to do with type of body required for a particular sports and time they had to make the movie.

      • Aamir not a kid now. He won’t let such ego issues come in between his career moves. When he took 3I, he was bombarded with comments like you got it because SRK left it. He replied he is not an idiot to let go a Hirani movie. He takes decisions from his head. And it’s probably his only chance to share screenspace with actor he admires and grown up watching.

      • Munna – coolguy has a point here and it is very clear that Sallu stole the whole idea here from Dangal script – reg YRF/SRK angle – ha ha – even if it is not true – the truth is that SRK ki to vaat lag gai he already 😉 and this kind of 300 cr stuff from Sallu and Aamir will not help him in any way as he is finding it diff. to deliver even a 200 cr hit these days….

    • I think much of this is assumptive. I’m sure the 3 parties are annoyed but unlikely based on some kind of collision. Salman/YRF films got their humble pie. Aamir’s career is torture for many, even his own fans!

I also doubt he’d sign a YRF based on the script knowing they tried to screw him over. He’s rejected Darr on far lower principles. I doubt Big B or Aamir have signed up just for bonding and box office. They’ve had 20 years to get together, so signing on with a failed director just purely for BO and working together doesn’t make sense. One can criticize Big B’s BO record post his return but he’s hardly had a bad performance. If it didn’t work it was mostly the director or script. I’d back both their judgement…It’s likely to be something meaningful IMO. You don’t wait 20+ years for this deal, I’m sure there has been multiple opportunities to bring them together.

It is by far on paper one of the biggest films around and hopefully it’s worthwhile and not a D3 deal.

SRK pointless at this stage, not in the same league. Salman will need better films, he ‘can’ overhaul the records if it is a goal. But superficial stuff won’t fly, Dangal vs. Sultan proves this.

      Like

      • Every major actor of the last 2 decades has worked with Big B. I find it hard to believe Aamir/Big B would choose poor judgement at this stage to create a superficial box office Bonanza. They’ll know the significance of the film.

      • Agree on assumptions part. But SRK-Sallu becoming friends again, Sallu-YRF team up to screw over Aamir, SRK-YRF relations, YRF not as powerful as it once was, all of these are just too good to be co-incidences. There would have been some discussions between them. All 3 parties at least professionally hate Aamir. He is making their professional lives difficult. They may have good personal relations with him, but their movies being constantly compared with Aamir’s and falling short must be hurting them inside.
And Darr was way back. Aamir was an amateur those days compared to where he is now. Infact if he would have taken Darr and it had worked and even got DDLJ he would have never come out of his early romantic image. Who knows he may have walked a complete different career path.

Why Amitabh made such a bad choice as comeback in 1997 ?? I mean when Mrityudata was announced, I was so much pissed off .. Mehul Kumar was such a pathetic director even in all his hits with Nana Patekar(Tiranga, Krantiveer) .. Who made bachchan blindly believed that Mehul possess any sort of talent ?? and he is better than likes of Mukul Anand, Subhash Ghai , Mani Ratnam … etc .. Flop with any of these was still acceptable , But movie with Mehul Kumar flopped the day it announced. Mrityudata was unforgivable blunder .. if it happened later sometime, i hardly care .. but as a comeback movie it hurt bachchan image a lot at that time. Then followed by ABCL fiasco .. followed by KBC turned Amitabh into overexposure machine. His follow up movies were not bad, but he did a lot .. hell a lot, released 10 movies in single year (2004 ??? ) .. this overexposure hurt .. hurt a lot.

Even RBDJ is far superior movie to Mohabbatien.

    • Agree with Munna here. The theory is far fetched. There is definitely some amount of backstabbing but that is done by Salman IMO. Somewhere i read that Salman was meant to be a boxer as per the script but he thought that it is too much effort to get into a boxers body given the current shape he was in. He just went ahead with the wrestler concept fully knowing what Dangal was esp with the Haryanvi and rural backdrop.

I tend to believe that Aamir is the common enemy and possibly one of the reasons for SRK and Salman are bonding these days. There must be whole lot of truth to the report that Aamir walked out of a party sobbing or upset with Salman and SRK. Aamir is simply taking the high road now when asked about Salman or SRK because I think his focus is to make good movies that make some profit business wise. But, unfortunately for the other two, the movies are turning out to be Blockbusters.

On the other hand, Aamir and Adi seem to have a good personal relationship and signing Thugs goes against the theory of YRF as co-consiprators as well.

  33. Bengaluru molestation: Backlash to Akshay Kumar’s message shows it’s catch-22 situation for stars

On 5 January 2017, Akshay Kumar posted a video message condemning the molestation of women in Bengaluru on New Year’s Eve. In the message he compared the attackers to ‘beasts’. The video wild-fired its way across Twitter and Facebook. The reactions on my timelines though, ranged from ‘Akshay Kumar should not comment on gender issues’ to ‘actors only take a stand on social issues for publicity’.

On the morning of 9 January 2017, Meryl Streep made a blistering anti-Trump speech at the 74th Golden Globes without mentioning the President-elect. During her acceptance speech for the Cecil B DeMille Awards, she called out Trump for mocking a disabled person and warned that the press would need to be defended. As expected, the same people who laughed at Akshay for using a public platform to address a societal issue lauded Meryl.

Bollywood actors are always criticised for not taking a stand on issues that are relevant and volatile. It’s just that when they do address an issue, their opinions are ridiculed and their motives questioned. And, don’t forget what happened to Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan when they spoke up.

Celebrities in our country don’t have basic freedom of expression. They are both expected to have and not have any opinions. If they do express an opinion, they shouldn’t have ever done or said anything contrary to that opinion. Also, they shouldn’t have a film releasing around the time of the said opinion being shared.

A friend pointed out that Akshay has Jolly LLB 2 releasing next month so obviously this video was a PR exercise. She added, “When he does films like Rowdy Rathore and Housefull where women are objectified, how can he expect his audience to respect women?” Last year, Katrina Kaif spoke about gender equality and violence against women during a conference in Delhi. The first reaction I heard was “How can Katrina talk about gender empowerment when she dances suggestively in skimpy clothes to ‘Chikni Chameli’ and ‘Sheila ki Jawani’?”.

Apparently, actors like Akshay or Katrina have no right to speak about gender issues. ‘Every job is a job’ does not apply to Bollywood’s actors. The argument is that actors have a large sphere of influence. Hence, we expect our actors to be actor-activists. And, that brings us right back to the backlash they face every single time. Ever so often the repercussions go beyond abuses online or being topics of discussion on primetime news. If Bollywood is too scared to speak up, it’s because their statements could (and have, in the past) harmed the industry financially. This is not a fear that Hollywood lives with.

During the Actress Roundtable of 2015, Kalki Koechlin was spot on while explaining an actor’s social responsibility. “People always say that actors have a responsibility… an actor has the responsibility to deliver in their job as an actor, just as much as a banker in theirs. For every actor to be an activist on every topic is ridiculous,” she said.

Every time we look to our celebrities to use their influence to impact large scale societal change, it is important to remember that they are only human. Like us, they are bad, and at times lazy activists. When a celebrity speaks out, it’s out of sheer frustration and anger at what is happening in the country. Again, that reaction is no different from how anyone of us would react.

Most of us don’t have the bandwidth to comment about everything. What an actor chooses to take a stand on comes from a personal space. It has nothing to do with his/her movies. In his video message Akshay said, “I am ashamed to be a human being today. I was returning from my New Year’s vacation with my four-year-old daughter in my arms when I learnt about the molestation incident in Bangalore (sic). I don’t know how did you all feel about it, but my blood started boiling. I am a daughter’s father but even if I was not one, I feel if a society cannot respect its women, it doesn’t deserve to be called a humane society. What’s most disgusting is that people have the guts to justify such shameful acts by criticising women for their choice of clothes.”

Everything Bollywood does is not for publicity. Among the many causes he supports, Akshay, along with Youth Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray, has been involved in the Women’s Self Defense Centre (WSDC) in Mumbai where women are given free self-defense training. Launched in 2014, WSDC offers a course that lasts for a month after which women have the option of enrolling for free advance classes. There are plans to open 100 more WSDCs across the country in the next five years.

Akshay Kumar doesn’t need a video message or a WSDC to generate publicity for his next release or for himself. Nor does Katrina Kaif need to speak at a women’s empowerment conference to generate work. Like you and me, Bollywood celebrities are not obligated to be activists. They do it because they are concerned citizens.

The only people we need to question about social responsibility are our elected representatives. They are the only ones who directly benefit from airing their views. So, leave Bollywood alone.

  34. Dangal Third Monday Business
    Tuesday 10 January 2016 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dangal (Hindi) had a drop in business on its third Monday as it grossed 4.25 crore nett. Its a drop because of what has gone before and now the film is finding it harder to hold on thw weekdays. That can be seen by the numbers on Friday and Monday compared to Saturday and Sunday. Compaing with other successful films the 35% drop on a third Monday is a trend but compared to how Dangal has performed it is the drop, The film has seen noticeable drops on second Tuesday (holiday period ended), third Friday and now third Monday. the lifetime business is now in the same range as PK with close to 338 crore nett. The business on Monday was a little less than what PK (4.40 crore) had grossed on the same day The business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

    First Week – 1,92,38,00,000
    Second Week – 1,11,50,00,000
    Friday – 6,25,00,000
    Saturday – 10,00,00,000
    Sunday – 13,50,00,000
    Monday – 4,25,00,000 apprx
    Third Week (4 Days) – 34,00,00,000

    GRAND TOTAL – 3,37,88,00,000 apprx

An third week is set for another weekly record at 44-45 crore nett which would give it a second and third week record. The fourth week will be much harder. The film is looking at a 348 crore nett plus total after three weeks and the lifetime business should be around 365 crore nett. If the tax exemptions for Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh come through it may go a little higher.

yes because those films max out their audience over the weekend. There are then very few people left who haven’t seen the film. Once they do over the week that’s a 100% of people and the film can then drop 80% on the second Fri. BOI assure me this is normal.

A mashup of old footage from a cricket match played by Bollywood stars from the Sixties keeps popping up online sporadically and has now been reposted by actor Salman Khan. The video, repackaged to the IPL theme and featuring a roster of A-list players headlined by Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, went viral in April 2016. It looks to be headed towards social media fame again after being rediscovered by Salman and shared via his new app (which he launched on his 51st birthday). It’s not entirely clear when and where the match was held. According to the Facebook descriptor posted last year, the charity match was held at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park in 1962 or thereabouts. Funds were being raised for drought-struck Maharashtra. However, it could also have been hosted by the Maharaja of Patiala in 1956. The packed stands watched Team Dilip Kumar play Team Raj Kapoor. Players included Shashi Kapoor, Mehmood, Joy Mukherjee, I S Johar, Shubha Khote and many other stars of the era. Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor were great friends and co-starred in films like 1949’s Andaz.

  37. Filmfare Awards Nominations Revealed. Akshay Kumar Ignored, Twitter Outraged.

Filmfare Awards nominations were announced on Monday and Twitter is enraged by omission Akshay Kumar, who gave acclaimed performances in Airlift and Rustom

The nominations for this year’s Filmfare Awards have been announced and Twitter seems to have been instantly enraged by a notable omission. Actor Akshay Kumar has been overlooked for a Best Actor nod, despite acclaimed performances in Airlift and Rustom. ‘Filmfare Awards On Sale’ is trending furiously, buoyed by indignant tweets from Akshay’s fan clubs. “No one nominated from Dangal,” huffed at least one angry post – this is not entirely true: both Aamir’s film and Aamir himself have scored nominations although somewhat unfairly Dangal’s supporting cast has been ignored. No nominations for either the actresses who played the daughters of Aamir’s character in the film nor one for TV star Sakshi Tanwar who was cast as his wife. The Filmfare nominations were revealed last night in Mumbai at a party attended by the likes of Shah Rukh Khan and Sridevi.

Neither the well-reviewed Airlift nor Rustom, considered a lesser film by critics but perhaps not by Akshay’s fans, feature on the list of nominees anywhere. Those up for Best Actor include all three Khans – Aamir for Dangal, Salman for Sultan and Shah Rukh for Fan – Amitabh Bachchan for Pink, Ranbir Kapoor for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Shahid Kapoor for Udta Punjab and Sushant Singh Rajput for M S Dhoni: The Untold Story. The movies competing for Best Film are Dangal, Neerja, Pink, Udta Punjab, Kapoor And Sons and Sultan – the inclusion of the last has also annoyed Twitter greatly.

Having been heaped praised on for Airlift, I haven’t seen it but reviews suggest it was a solid outing and he’s had a good year, one nomination was not much too ask.

If the favoured folk like SRK or Hrithik had three full lead roles and 2 clean hits it’s obvious they’d get nominated.

For ADHM to get highest nominations is very fishy as usual. Like 3 male playback singing nominations, what a joke! The whole graph of FF post mid 90’s is just dominated by YRF or Dharma or Farah Khan productions. I think people like Karan Johar and others understand that the shows are not entirely credible. The television channels need faces above all, and they will give the award to the half-deserving candidate as long as they show up. Like Johar said – jo dikhta hai, woh bikta hai.

These awards are pure commerce. I predict that in the next few years things will change and we might see something credible come up. But too bad that some actors like Aamir and even Akshay have suffered in the bargain.

What is most offensive is total lack of respect for the viewers with unrehearsed awkward moments, lack of practice and chaotic movements by celebrities while handing over /receiving awards….. I wish someone can start a oscar level award show in india which has integrity and respect.

Now lets say I give 2 shits about FF nominations for just for arguments sake. How the f$%k do the Dangal girls not even make the DEBUTANT nomination? Dangal gets 2 nominations? Poor Akshay Kumar does not even get 1? These awards show better be careful or all they will get every year is Salman and SRK hosting AND in the audience and Rekha giving out best movie while Karan Johar gets a ‘Hi Karan’ from every award presenter.

    What an effin joke.

    • These shows are not suppose to be taken seriously. They are mere entertainment. No one even keeps track of who won what anymore in general. Nowdays obsession is completely on BO collections. These shows are just a good option to.have on TV when nothing worthwhile is going around Even national awards are looked at with doubt. Very unfortunate state.

Because Oscar goes for something more dynamic and delectable. Dangal is a one note ordinary hardcore masala movie masquerading as some transcendental folktale. Rangan Baradwaj has nicely ‘decoded’ the Dangal mantra which everyone here has been chanting. To be frank for me it’s not even in the league of a Sultan which had different shades all woven to make it an epic tale. Do you ever get adrenalin rush of ‘chal modh de uska panja re…’

Dangal is a good ‘working’ movie which happened to catch the fancy of movie starved family ‘communion’ during vacation period….chalo aaj mummy & daddy ke saath , kal nana naani ke saath , parson dada dadi ke saath and then tau ji , mausi , uncle aunty, neighbors then with falana dimka….again, then again !! It has somehow become means to reconnect !

How else can one explain this boxoffice pile on ?

        • Let’s put things straight. Barring the odd review on this blog Sultan is not in Dangal’s league. If the films were released in reverse, Sultan would have been treated far less kindly. Most critical reviews follow the same pattern. Despite all the cheating, shenanigans from Salman and YRF… Aamir and Dangal have butt kicked them into another planet and in the process knocked you for a sixer!

No argument you put forward for Dangal’s success can be justified. All the odds were against the film. It’s literally done a stone cold stunner, rock bottom and tombstone power driver on Sultan and Sultan has been pinned for 3 and layed on the floor … and you cannot admit it as you were so certain in your own myopic world it could never happen. Because of this ego you’ve got to stretch the debate into implausible realms.

Basically Aamir has shattered your dreams. Movie starved crowd my arse! No one would shell out ridiculous sums of money for a poor movie. Seems like you need another sixer to get you back onto planet Earth!

And tomorrow enjoy all the articles about Dangal’s entry into the 350+CR club. Salman is welcome one day when he stars in a deserving enough film.

Its true that some great films are universal, but some great films are also not universal. Every society relates with some issues more than others. And Dangal’s strength lies in its texture, colourful language and capturing local flavours. It is not the story that is necessarily its appeal. lagaan by comparison was a period film about a time the West is well-versed with. The fascination for the Raj period continues. Also half of the film’s cast was British. Obviously, no surprise that everyone from the Oscar jury to Tony Blair loved it.

I bet Kajol was hesitant to come for the ceremony considering she can no more guffaw and clap the way she used to when she was on good terms with all the insiders who mattered (Yash Raj, Karan Johar). Fighting with Johar esp is a huge blunder on her part. He is everywhere, and on excellent terms now with all the Khans and top stars. He wisely decided not to alienate himself and be solely devoted to SRK. He no longer comes across as snooty and campy. He has made an effort to reach out to others and the results are showing in the kind of films he is now producing, directing and supporting.

Ajay and Kajol esp is going to find the going very tough. Her career is nothing without Yash Raj and Johar. Not that she did any great work with Johar, but at least it gave her the hits and enabled her to keep u her image as a premium star. Left with her hubby’s films, she is going to have nothing but one disaster after another.

        • You’re harsh on Kajol…She will always side with her husband, that’s reality. That’s not something to frown upon. At least she doesn’t leave her partner under the bus like Aamir did to Kiran with his intolerance comments.

Too kind too Johar, sure he’s progressed above YRF and surrounding himself with finer company, still a superficial director looking for his huge critical masterpiece. I credit him with making middling films like KANK, MNIK & ADHM as he gets people talking usually about nothing much. Nice musical ears though.

          Like

        • The problem between Johar and Kajol is that the former has moved on from his KKHH days, and is making an effort to break away from his comfort zone. He is no longer in an elitist, snoot club, which is what Kajol wishes to be a part of. She refuses to take any risks with roles, production houses or people, and it was a matter of time before it would all end.

        • Sandy, very unfair remark from you. Kajol did right thing standing her hubby side, for issue which Ajay feel is important to raise, and she rightly chose to support him even if it was not that imp issue. To say that Karan or Yrf did any favor to kajol is far too stretched imagination, Kajol was somewhat talented and if not Karan/Yrf she would get her due somewhere else. So to say that she should surrender herself on toe of Karan/yrf on expense of her hubby’s goodwill , is way too optimism. Either you are keeping these cartoons (karan/yrf) in too much of high esteem .. or you think of Ajay/Kajol like any D grade actors.

“Left with her hubby’s films, she is going to have nothing but one disaster after another.” … Atleast Ajay tried his best to deliver something credible in Shivaay, a movie which opened to 8 Crore on day one and ended on 90 Crore certifies that there was some audience for the movie ..

        • I don’t agree with this philosophy of standing by one’s spouse no matter what, even it is means shoving aside old friendships, and in other words disrespecting other relationships. If that is your choice, be prepared to not have friends, because no one is going to keep playing second fiddle in anyone’s life.

If both are at fault, and if I care for both, I would keep quiet and let the thing pass, unless I am insecure about my relationship and fear that my husband is a hot head who would leave me.

In my humble opinion, Ajay Devgan has nothing credible. He has just been jealous of the likes of YRF and Johar, and it is not a coincidence that those people happened to be Kajol’s support system, which he has destroyed. All he has produced in the name of making classics are duds like U Main Aur Hum and Raju Chacha.

I would never compare Aamir’s situation with this one. I am quite sure Aamir did what he did unknowingly. If he knew the repercussions, he would not speak at all, forget taking Kiran’s name. And he said a lot under his name too – namely that he is feeling a sense of disquiet in the country etc. I kind of appreciate him for saying things like he would not support his children in films unless they are worthy and talented. I take that kind of mentality over others who feel their kids have a birthright in the industry. It’s a “us versus them” mentality in relationships that I oppose.

  43. I am somehow bored of this sudden Boxoffice following that we have taken up without actually talking about any merits of the movies at all. I guess its psychological effect that now i am rooting for the other actors and movies that they are doing. The Industry is suddenly becoming very Khancentric. I remember back in 1997, Raja Hindustani was still on screen and was doing ATBB business, i used to follow some show on the TV that used to rate actors on their movie boxoffice performance and they had Aamir khan for like weeks and weeks, i was bored and stopped watching. I started rooting for SRK’s Koyla and i liked his return.

I guess what i am saying is, we should look out for movies that excite you on its merits without the Boxoffice prospects. Since in the absence of any big franchises barring Dhoom or Golmaal, the 3 Khans have become the centerpoint of event movies. Anything that they work on becomes an event film and doesnt give them any flexibility to try out of the box stuff or even Indie/Small Movies.

The other star/actors are not doing anything to push the envelope perse. Possibly Akshay Kumar with his varying subjects , but varying subjects doesnt necessarily produce great movies. I saw his Rustom and felt it was underwhelming and just better than the disaster MJ. Airlift was alrite but still wasn’t something ala Baby level for him.

This is the same tasteless game that Salman and Aamir played against SRK till a couple of years ago, where each actor would praise the other and call him number one. It was a clear attempt to sideline SRK. This was a time when SRK was still a formidable force at the BO.

Now, SRK seeing that he is clearly losing the BO battle, prefers to anoint one actor (Salman) and bring down Aamir to his own level -perhaps in an attempt to feel better about his failing BO.

    Reviewers commentry on Akshay –

Akshay Kumar has delivered his career’s best performance in AIRLIFT. He is outstanding! He is clearly the soul of the film. It is clear, this is not merely a film. He’s willing to give it his all. The transformation from a man who lived for himself to a man possessed with the well being of his fellow countrymen in a foreign land is nothing short of genius. The scene where he communicates helpless guilt through vacuous eyes to the wife of an employee who has been murdered in the mayhem is simply brilliant. There are many scenes where Akshay towers as an actor. It is a National award winning worthy act. – See more at: http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movie/airlift/critic-review/#sthash.OafoGBct.dpuf

    • Filmfare Awards nominations for Pakistani actors?

The Filmfare awards nominations are just out. A lot of eyebrows have shot up with at least three Pakistani names in the list. Fawad Khan for his performance in Shakun Batra’s Kapoor & Sons, and two singers Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Atif Aslam have been short-listed. All richly deserved. But isn’t the honour shamefully ill-timed?

A prominent filmmaker whose films have a staggering number of awards in the past, says he will neither attend nor accept any awards at a function where Pakistani artistes are welcome. “It’s a matter of self-respect. We are not welcome in Pakistan. They brutally kill and maim our soldiers. And we behave as if our cinema can’t do without their artistes? Kuch toh sharm karo,” says the filmmaker.

One wonders how the Pakistani nominees intend to attend the awards as there is an unofficial ban on their entry in India. Says the BJP spokesperson Shaina NC, “Relations with Pakistan have deteriorated to such an extent that there is a move now to declare Pakistan a terror state on an international level. Given the current crisis I don’t think we can have Pakistani artistes coming here.”

Footfalls – Dangal V Bajrangi Bhaijaan v PK

Dangal is looking to beat the footfalls record of Bajrangi Bhaijaan which has been the most watched film in theatres in the last fifteen years. It will be pretty close as Dangal had a higher ratio of business coming from high end multiplexes in the third week but it is lucky that Delhi city has gone tax free from last Friday and that will compensate somewhat. Bajrangi Bhaijaan had 3.54 crore footfalls and PK was on 3.50 crore and looks like Dangal can maybe go to 3.60 crore plus though depend on the ATP (Average Ticket Price) in week three. If it can go above Bajrangi Bhaijaan it would be a good sign for the industry as although generally footfalls are down but the bigger films seem to be getting bigger (possibly as surrounded by poor content week in week out) and maybe the 4 crore footfall mark is not far for the big event film. The footfall comparison for two weeks of Dangal with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK is as follows.

    Week One
    Dangal – 1,92,65,000
    Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 2,01,54,000
    PK – 1,81,35,000

    Week Two
    Dangal – 1,15,72,000
    Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 99,72,000
    PK – 1,00,74,000

    TOTAL (Two weeks)
    Dangal – 3,08,37,000
    Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 3,01,26,000
    PK – 2,82,09,000

  56. Found a very intresting comment on indicine site.Writer is Sky.credit to him.i am just quoting him.

Ever since Bajrangi Bhaijaan released in 2015, though because of competition it failed to become HGOAT we are used to read lines like Highest footfalls post Gadar. Which was an achievement for the movie. Before BB no one care about the footfalls of movies, focus was more on collections that’s why when CE crossed 3I, D3 crossed 3I, ETT came close to 3idiots, whole focus was on the collections. No one was talking about footfalls of those films compare to 3idiots, which has the highest footfalls since multiplex culture came into existence. Sites like Indicine used the trick of highest footfalls of BB for there benefit to pull down PK and other Aamir releases. There estimate of Dangal footfalls is also around 3.5cr, estimating it will not cross BB footfalls.

Now BOI posted the footfalls estimates of Dangal which shows it will cross BB footfalls, mind that those footfalls for Hindi version only so if we include dubbed version, it easily beaten BB with 13-15 lacs margin, pk with 20lac margin. So Since 3Idiots Aamir has given 4 films which has crossed 3 crore mark which it self is big achievement. Isn’t it?

    3I – 3.17cr FF
D3 – 3.10cr (2.98cr of hindi version & close to 12-13lac from dubbed as it collected 12.5cr in dubbed version)
    PK – 3.5cr
    D3- 3.7cr expected.

Always we hear about the high ticket rates for Aamir films, no one talking about these higher footfalls his films getting these days. Till PK not a single actor given 3cr footfalls movie in multiplex era, Salman joined him with BB and Sultan which having 3cr+ FF. Only Dabangg & CE crossed 2.5cr ff till 2014. Blockbusters like KICK,ETT & Bodyguard FF were not much more than Ghajini FF. So how come media putting down Aamir films with excuses & excuses.

Even before Ghajini films which were HGOTY struggling to cross 2cr ff, Aamir is credited to bring the higher footfalls with Ghajini & 3I, followed by Salman since Dabangg.
Generating 3cr+ FF in current time where we have many entertainment source, pirated copies uploaded on website on first day itself. Its not a cake walk to get these high footfalls considering all the pros and cons.

The Social Media engines churn this information before hand to play to the core SRK Fans to come and support Tubelight. Already they are playing the friendship card and helping out each other.

I really want to see how Salman promotes Tubelight. If its the same style going on Kapil Comedy show and all other shows and carpet bombing with the promotions, then basically its not apple to apple comparison with the way Dangal is promoted.

Anyways this year Salman has 2 main festive weekends available to him. So i see him giving 300 crore plus grossers with both and setting himself ahead of the pack i.e. Aamir and others. I hope the movies are great content wise.

    1. Salman: I have a feeling he has a big ego and personality issues and he might have a lot going on in his mind personally and movies and doing blockbuster movies is his way out of those issues. Its like i work and work to not let my mind think anything else.

    2. SRK: I feel he looks content but plays out a lot like a socialite actor. He has acheived everything and may be he is at a backfoot since past decade hasnt been that kind to him. I feel he is playing along Salman for keeping in prospects of his projects and keep the PR to maintain the badshah status.

    3. Aamir: I am not so sure about his personality, may be too reserved. Kind of focused on his own thing. May be he doesn’t like all this Superstar attention he has been getting and with his success continues to put more pressure on him. But one thing is certain, he knows now that his brand of cinema, scripts is what the audience wants.

More to come others. This is my personal opinion and honestly i can be completely wrong once i get to meet them 🙂

    • Don’t entirely agree with your assessment of Salman Khan.
Ego he has as is evident from the way he treats those who he doesn’t like.
However he comes across as genuine and direct like his father. His appreciation for Dangal was genuine and did not come across as forced.
He had a troubled past and his guilt comes across when he punishes himself in not going for a family and sharing his wealth. Is that enough? No…but he is tackling it.
Overall, i find him to have the most pleasing personality among stars.

and acquiring skills readily with less hard work or practice than the average person……now it’s all the more credible that he gets it right the first time itself.

Doing more to the scene than required is what resulting in awful cinema by most of these actors and that is why they are failing to connect time and again.

If a survey is done today what scares you the most about watching Raees. I am sure more than 60% per cent will say over acting and hammy scenes of srk.

In its own right DCH does not deserve this kind of negative press.

I think they are hurt by the success of Dangal resulting in obsession with DCH.

The Fiasco Of Dil Chahta Hai
    Thursday 12 January 2016 11.30 IST

Dil Chahta Hai was a film released in 2001 and was a mediocre success at the box office (losing in all circuits barring Mumbai and South. Delhi / UP just about covered). The fiasco with this film was not the box office but how a section of the industry followed the story telling style and narrative of this film despite rejection so instead of the tradition rooted desi Hindi film, this western style urban (so called cool) film which was not relatable to most was being attempted by many. Most of these films fell flat on their faces barring a few exceptions but even here the appreciation and recovery was not so high that so many had to be made week in week out. The corporates were just coming to India when the film released and they backed this cinema allowing it to be made as independent distributors were never going to touch unless at very low prices which held no attraction to producers as then the losses will be in their books. Even Dil Chahta Hai had MG’s cut on release by many distributors and this was despite it having stars like Aamir Khan and Preity Zinta.

Around 4-5 years back this Dil Chahta Hai cinema was still in control as far as budgets were concerned and the losses were not back breaking but in the last few years these so called urban cool niche films are budgeted so high that they have to be liked by the majority to cover and that is where 20 or 30 crore and even 40 and 50 crore losses led to the corporates pulling the plug on Hindi cinema. What is hard to understand is why a section of the industry went this was, was it because of the corporate world backing who were mainly Hollywood studios and maybe this more western cinema appealed to them and they thought it was the way forward (though obviously wrongly) at the expense of the real Hindi cinema or was it that the media ranted and raved about Dil Chahta Hai and some believed there was something in this and don’t want to miss the bus.

The same ranting and raving had happened many times before but generally for small films. But in 1989, a film named Parinda released and the media just went bonkers over it although it was like a leftover NFDC film and a sleep fest which the audiences rightly rejected. The difference Parinda had a from an NFDC film was a cast and a budget so the media basically got to see an art film with better production values and a cast but you can’t fool the audience. If its a sleep fest then you will get results of a sleep fest. The other filmmakers ignored the fuss and went on with business as usual and rightly so. The team of Parinda obviously though different and probably thought they were unlucky in some way and the media was correct and made a bigger budgeted 1942 – A Love Story (1994) and here at least the songs were not forced like a Parinda and Tax Exemption in Maharashtra meant some numbers but still an inevitable flop.

If a Parinda can be ignored and seen for what it is then surely a Dil Chahta Hai can also for a better industry. There can be two reasons for this, one is that in 2001 there were younger film makers and they were inexperienced like their counterparts in 1989 or it was the coming of multiplexes which they thought were more likely to accept western type cinema rather than the more desi Hindi cinema. The first reason you cant do anything about but second one is just common sense, cinemas are changing but its still the same people going to those cinemas or has this multiplex audience just come out of thin air. The misjudgment was probably because all multiplexes were in metros and up market areas and that was probably seen as multiplex cinema when actually it was South Mumbai or South Delhi cinema. A point to note is that a Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham which released a few months after Dil Chahta Hai did more than double the numbers in these same multiplexes. But what happens then filmmakers who believe in Dil Chahta Hai cinema put it down to huge cast but in those days the numbers were not about 3 days or 7 days where a cast can do the job but about 10-12 weeks and films did not run that long just on cast.

The film industry is probably the only one across the world which has held out from the challenge from Hollywood but now in India its only regional cinema for which Hollywood holds no fear while for Hindi films many filmmakers have to look at the calendar for Hollywood releases as someone of them can actually take out the Dil Chahta Hai type Hindi films at the box office. This was unthinkable earlier as Hindi films ruled but now many films are just Hindi in language whereas treatment is foreign. Regional cinema has no such issues and so there is no outside threat.

The funniest thing is that you get to read reports in newspapers that how great a Dil Chahta Hai remake or sequel will be which is just crazy. The film had Aamir Khan as main lead and lesser actors like Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khan, these two can today be replaced by superstars Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan and the results would not be better. Dil Chahta Hai got 1 crore footfalls at the time and even with the three Khans you are not getting much more than 1.5 crore because its still not going to work outside the few cities that it did in 2001 even though expectations will be for the highest ever (at least highest in multiplex era)

Just for the record putting aside the box office failure in most parts, the bigger failure as a film for Dil Chahta Hai was post release which makes it clear for all. In the decade of its release, repeat runs were still happening though business was not like earlier. In 2006, Dil Chahta Hai had a repeat run at just 12 theatres across India through the year and Gadar also released in 2001 had repeat run in 205 theatres and this is not counting very small centres where repeats are tough to track. This shows the insane gap five years after release and if we go to 2011 then the trp rating of a screening of Dil Chahta Hai was 0.18 and Gadar was 75% higher in one screening and 65% higher in another while Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham was 55% higher in one 60% higher in another and 70% in another. Not only where the blockbusters of 2001 screened more times but each time rated far higher and this was ten years after release. So after ten years the actual results were no different but the a section of the industry was going totally into Dil Chahta Hai type cinema. Something had to give and it did

Last week there was report how Disney India came unstuck with this Dil Chahta Hai cinema (Link). But even bigger advocates of Dil Chahta Hai cinema are Excel Entertainment the makers of Dil Chahta Hai where practically all there films belong to this cinema even when its an action film like Don. Obviously there is a change now as results with Dil Chahta Hai cinema were bad and now there is Raees which looks a mass film and no doubt the trailer is pretty good.

But it is a film from Excel Entertainment and they are pulling away from their normal cinema obviously for better box office and thats why doubts come. In 1974 there was a film released named Geeta Mera Naam (Sunil Dutt, Sadhana, Feroz Khan) and the film had a caption “Its a R.K. Nayyars conception of a super hit film” whatever that was supposed to mean. But credit to the maker the film may not have been a super hit but it was hit in many circuits. So when the promo of Raees which is actually good but that caption came to mind as is this an Excel Entertainment conception of a Hindi mass film or is it a real Hindi mass film. If its the latter then there will be no stopping it but if its the former then ??

Actually this is a different subject so more on Excel Entertainment and Raees next Thursday.

I need to watch PARINDA again and if I feel well, could dwell in detail about that.

  65. I think BOI know the inside story of Raees or the cinema being attempted there so they are coaching their reader to abandon the hope of a massy movie. Looking at the results of Dangal, I would be happy if the movie is not massy and deals with the core story with honest settings. No audience wishes to be taken for granted as they say in north in anurag kashyap lingo – ‘chutiyaa kaat diya’ or what is this Bakchodi (AIB) ?

Personally I am an ardent fan of BOI and take their figures and commentary as gospel truth. They just cut all the Yankee bullshit we read all over the place including this blog and come to the central point and essence of box-office.

But I must admit their reading of DCH is completely off the mark here because that’s an instant classic and much more powerful than what is being said about AAA off and on. Even RDB qualifies to the classic category for its new way of filmmaking / storytelling.

What is true is that not many in Hindi cinema are adequately talented or qualified to make cinema like that and understand the essence of those type of movies. If Aamir was not involved with both these projects results would have been a mishmash and vastly different than what we watched on screen.

Aamir is not god and has erred many times in 90s like in AAA. But that may be due to presence of Salman and his low self esteem may have made him over act and perform excessively in all scenes. Another thing working against AAA was the soundtrack and suddenly in 90s Santoshi wanted to create 50s Mohd Rafi music with ‘ilu ji sanam aa gaye’ and ‘Dil Karta Hai’ (personally I liked both these numbers).

    • Agree, never enjoyed AAA music. It would have benefited with a contemporary music score. And also agree that Aamir seemed to overact in the film -in some scenes. He was likeable though. Aamir can be good at comedy – like he was excellent in Rangeela, where RGV got a great, restrained performance from him.

  66. Salman does not miss the mark but is never trying enough plus over exposure on TV and shows is costing him these extreme figures. There are avenues to watch him free. Still the bigger picture and overall average is vastly superior.

Then I have just yesterday written about Bajrangi being bigger than anything we have seen in terms of footfalls until Dangal with inflated ticket prices happened. Sultan a good chunk (15-30%) multiplex crowd stayed out due to misunderstanding / inappropriate remarks on ‘rape’ simile.

Rest it’s better for long run not to be part of box-office rat race and try movies like Tubelight and develop / nurture audiences like Sandyi, AnJo….. Please remember aamir has taken a lifetime to get to this level / numbers. It needs work and Salman, SRK and Akki are at it…

    • I dont agree that 15-20% stayed away in Multiplexes. No matter what Salman’s pull in Single Screens is, it is comparable or probably lesser than Aamir in Multiplexes if you take premium cities. 15% would be have given Sultan an even lesser total. I think the Audience is smart enough to ignore the comment which was made by stupid Salman and it was an embarrassing moment for him.

  68. For livewire.also to add BB footfalls r 3.54 cr and PK footfalls r 3.50 cr.diff is hardly 1%.

Hats off Aamir Khan, you contribution is unparalleled to Indian cinema. We hope you will achieve these milestones in upcoming movies.

    • It would be nice if BOI compared RH footfalls with those of KKHH..!

To be honest a lot of these factors are legitimate to consider when judging box office performances. The reason I reject all this stuff completely coming from BOI is because of their utter dishonesty in these matters. Using these criteria selectively and so on. Much as they’re ranting against DCH but already the Yashraj/Dharma/SRK model was basically a major metro one with B,C centers contributing practically nothing. Don’t hear them complain so much about this! The logic is the same. Again we can have a debate on the economics of DCH (though why now and why just this one film?!) but there has to be some honesty about it. And again stretching that logic you’d have to bring up questions about a lot of ‘hits’ as well.

  72. “I never want to have anything to do with Kajol and Ajay Devgn”- Karan Johar –

The problem was actually never between her and me. It was between her husband and me, something which only she knows about, he knows about and I know about. I want to keep it at that. I don’t really want to say what transpired. But I did feel that she needed to apologize for something she didn’t do. I felt that if she’s not going to acknowledge twenty-five years of friendship, if she wants to support her husband, then that’s her prerogative. At some outer level I understood it. But I just couldn’t see myself in her life any more. It’s been months we haven’t spoken to each other.”

Going into the details of the entire episode in the run up to the release of ADHM and Shivaay, Karan goes on to vent out, “Prior to the release of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, there’s a lot that happened. Things were said, crazy accusations were made against me, that I had bribed someone to sabotage her husband’s film. I can’t even say that I was hurt or pained by it. I just wanted to blank it out. When she reacted to the whole situation and put out a tweet saying, ‘Shocked!’ that’s when I knew it was completely over for me. That tweet validated the insanity, that she could believe I would bribe someone. I felt that’s it. It’s over. And she can never come back to my life. I don’t think she wants to either. I never want to have anything to do with them as a unit. She was the one who mattered to me but now it’s over. I told my mother that she could have a one-on-one relationship with Kajol if she wanted. That’s my mother’s preference and if Kajol chooses to, but she’s out of my life.”

“I wouldn’t like to give a piece of myself to her at all because she’s killed every bit of emotion I had for her for twenty-five years. I don’t think she deserves me. I feel nothing for her any more. I’ve been told by my friends that it’s still my hurt talking but I’m so indifferent to the situation now, what with everything that’s transpired. There was still a bit of me that wished we would get back to what we had, but that one-word tweet that she put out – that was the most humiliating thing she could have done for a person who loved her deeply. That broke me. Once it broke me, it angered me and then I went into indifference. Now no matter what happens, I’m never going to be there for her. Maybe it doesn’t matter to her at all. I don’t even want to speak about her husband because that’s inconsequential to my life now. He doesn’t matter to me, he never did. I still don’t want to say anything about her husband because I want to respect the history she and I shared,” adds Karan Johar while talking about how hurt he felt after news of the entire bribing episode broke.

Being careful to word his feelings right, Karan explained his sentiments, especially since both he and Kajol share a common group of friends, “But yes, it hurts me that she’s still close to people I’m really close to, like Manish and Niranjan. Somehow I wish she wasn’t. When they talk about her, it angers me. I know it’s not fair for me to impose my feeling on them but it bothers me. I can’t be dishonest and say it doesn’t. I can’t help it. I’m human. But I don’t want to be that person who asks his friends to take sides. I’m not territorial normally, but about this, I feel very strongly.”

Evidently hurt and definitely feeling let down, Karan Johar has certainly taken the topic of his autobiography seriously. While we certainly hope that the two, Karan and Kajol manage to mend their frayed relationship in the future, looking at Karan Johar’s words we can’t help but wonder at what else the filmmaker will reveal in his book.

He assumed that whatever was happening wth both movies clash; her perspective will be sympathetic for Karan Johar. It is a valid expectation from friend but sometimes to maintain friendship you need to go extra mile.

First rule of friendship is talk when in doubt. TALK.

      • The relationship had already gone downhill, but neither Kajol nor Karan made anything public. But Ajay was not satisfied with that status quo and obviously felt insecure about another big film releasing with his. He had invested 2 years into Shivaay and couldn’t afford to lose money. Look at the difference. Aamir puts two years into a film and comes up with a Dangal, and Ajay comes with Shivaay and along with that ruins relationships that could make it very awkward for the two going forward.

In my opinion there is no explanation that needs to be sought when the betrayal from a friend is so confrontational. Johar was maintaining a dignified silence, but to accuse him of bribing KKR and Kajol supporting it is too much for anyone to take. There is no question of going and talking to people who have fallen so low already.

Much like Karan, I feel strongly about this. It was alright as long as they kept their bitterness to themselves, but to actually publicaly come out like that and talk nonsense about someone you called a friend is unforgivable in my books. Karan is right in every which way.

Going by actions of past 10 years I would say Ajay Devgn is a solid guy. Quiet, stable and rock solid. By HDDCS analogy, Kajol is right in siding with her pati parmeshwar. ( sorry sandyi but this is how I feel once committed)

Its Kjo who has been jumping beds since the end of srk era….and trying to find peace. He truly thought the era of Kashyaps and Motwane is here and hopped on to the indie bandwagon only to spring back to conventional cinema when the tide changed.

During ADHM release I had commented extensively on this and I say it once again, if this movie was with any star but Ranbir, kjo would be least bothered on the outcome and accept it as matter of fact but here the promise of a blockbuster was made to Ranbir in return for god knows what?? He was terribly insecure and may have hired / talked to KRK ( one fine day krk starts tweeting very negatively ) to start bad mouthing Shivaay and I am happy Ajay called out that bluff.

I remember when WE Are Family released, he uncharacteristically came forward and expressed displeasure about Kareena and Kajol getting equal billing. He said being senior Kajol should have been presented on a different level, and then he went on to say he can’t pretend that he likes his wife (Kajol) and Kareena equally.

How utterly charmless. And this from a guy who – I have from very good source – is quite a sleep around.

        • I agree Kajol doesn’t have much to lose professionally, though she likes to believe she still matters and repeatedly refuses to name another current actress she admires. Her standard response is – “I am the best.”

But I still believe she enjoys her celebrity-hood immensely; loves guffawing at award functions and parties, and likes that odd big film that comes her way. She is all over the place, and enjoys every bit of the attention even though she pretends not to care. Now all that is going to take a beating. She has made things very awkward for herself. Everyone who matters is going to be on Johar’s good side – Johar has in fact made a veiled threat to his common friends with Kajol – with me or against me.

Whatever little attention Kajol got was courtesy her association with Johar and co. The way I see it Kajol is going get eclipsed and ignored from the celebrity firmament, and I think sooner or later, this clash is going to be redundant.

      • Agree, and KJo dignified silence is one whole letter of complaints. If he said it’s over then fine but he’s gone into overdrive now. It’s begging for a response.

        • The Devgns have gone public with their statements against Johar, while the latter didn’t say anything so far. I think this is Johar’s payback to Kajol by making clear what he thinks of her. There is no confusion for anyone now, and that makes things difficult for her.

If I still cared for a friend, I would continue to keep quiet. But when I am beyond caring, and I want to make a clean break, i would certainly say it in the public domain.

In my opinion all 3 are to blame. Devgnn and KJo could have resolved at first, no need for Kajol to get involved. Now this interview is so delayed it feels pointless. Devgnn or Kajol will respond etc. Off the back of a decent performance, KJo is unnecessarily getting involved in idle gossip.

Also supporting a partner is not a crime. She can choose not to if she wants to.

Having said that there was no need for Kajol to show support publicly without any ask.

          Who announce their movie first?

If that is the case and Johar as producer of movie, he could have chosen some other date. But I guess you can gauge from comment that he and Devgn don’t gel together. And he assumed that his relation will be in status quo with Kajol.

        • It is not an interview! it is an excerpt from Karan’s latest book, The Unsuitable Boy. It would have been strange if he had not spoken about the episode, because they were friends for long. If he can talk about his homosexuality, why not his fall out with Kajol.

It would make the book suitably spicy, plus Johar gets to set matter straight.

        • I don’t say – don’t support your spouse, but be ready not to have any real friends. Marriage is not about disrespecting other people in your life and supporting every insane accusation that your husband makes. Kajol could have continued promoting her husband’s film and using her star power without making any comment on Karan. No one would have minded that.

I have seen wives who support their husband over their brother, sister and everyone else because they think that is what they should do. No, it is not the right thing to do. Be fair to all, and don’t behave like one relationship is always going to be above the other.

        • Movies clash all the time. By the same token, Hrithik should be waging a war against Farhan and SRK and accusing them of this and that. Is he doing that? Even Sr Roshan’s reaction was strong but not below the belt. I mean, even after this clash, these people can coexist and maintain a semblance of cordiality. Hrithik might end up working with Farhan or Zoya.

And we are talking about the Diwali week (Shivaay v/s ADHM) where historically movies have clashed. Also, Karan mentions that his relationship with Kajol had deteriorated much earlier, and that he expected an apology from her over something Ajay did that never came. Why would he then opt out of the Diwali date, even if Shivaay was coming on that day? Whom did he owe a consideration here? It was Ajay who took this personally and got nervous.

What irritates me is that this duo is aggressive in taking a fight to people, but cannot handle it when they get it as good.

  73. Box Office Milestones: From Hum Aapke Hain Koun To Dangal

This week, Dangal becomes the first-ever Hindi film to cross the 350-crore mark at the domestic box office. The much-spoken about ‘100-crore club’ started with Ghajini (December 2008). But to know when the 50-crore club started, we have to go back, all the way to 1994.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun (HAHK) was the first film to cross the 50-crore mark. It took 14 long years before the 50 became 100. Thereafter, it has been an Aamir Khan show all the way, as suggested by the chart below.

      • Always liked his personality overall, and he is also blessed with a wonderful, deep voice.

But his intensity is overrated. In most of his pre Golmaal films, including Omkaara, he kept his mouth closed and cut short dialogues to avoid showing his decayed teeth. This was misread as intensity 😉
Then he went in for a complete teeth implant and voila, he is showing off his bateesi in all its glory.

Overwhelmed by the success of Dangal, which has crossed the Rs 350-crore mark at the Indian box office, Aamir said: “I am amazed by the reaction that ‘Dangal‘ has received. People have loved the film so much. It is very rare to get such kind of a reaction.”

Dangal tells the story of real life wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trains his daughters to become champions in the sport.

About his favourite scenes in the film, he said: “The father-daughter wrestling challenge”. He also praised the work of actresses Sanya M

As a matter of fact by the time the fourth weekend is through for the film, and at least 7-8 crore more are added to its total, Dangal would have gone past the sum total of the first Friday collections of *all Hindi films* that released in 2016. That pretty much shows a huge gap between how much this Nitesh Tiwari directed film has managed so far vis-à-vis how dull most of the Fridays right through 2016 have been.

Dangal is now marching towards the 375 crore mark by the end of its fourth week and further to that it would have five more days to make moolah before Raees and Kaabil strike on Wednesday, 25th January.
